    « Okay »

Room was clean and whilst tight we were able to fit 5 of us ok with the sofa bed and two queen beds. The Bathroom was very small though and quite dated. View from room was uninspiring over a back lane and demolished building. Bus transport was good with the stop directly outside hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful.

    « Great location »

I travelled with my 75 year old dad and we enjoyed the hotel and the location and the view. Bathroom was a little tight but bed was awesome. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Great restaurants around and close by.

    « Mixed Thoughts »

Great location, near many good restaurants on Davies and other directions. Staff are great. In 2012 the hotel was undergoing reno's and we were very happy with our stay. In 2014 the hotel was what we expected and never wrote a review. Now in 2016 we stayed on the 4th floor and the rooms that were renovated 3 and 4 years ago look weary - grout coming out of the bathtub surround, paint in the bathtub. Felt like the maintenance people had no pride in their work. The room was clean but a grit on the bathroom floor. What surprised me the most was the very noisy reception area when checking in. Felt like we were at a pub instead of a Plus hotel. The staff were also distracted by the noise. They now have a lounge just off of reception. Never went to check it out but it was not inviting way to be greeted into the hotel. The excellent front staff helped overcome the desire to turn around and walk out.

« great location, average hotel »

This hotel is steps away from beautiful English Bay. This is an acceptable hotel. It's clean. The staff are helpful. We could hear a baby crying several times through the night as well as someone coughing a lot. So our sleep was interrupted.....while mid week prices are good, the weekend rate jumped considerably. Restaurant is in the hot and Starbucks is steps away.

    « Love this place! »

We travel up to Vancouver every New Year's Eve and stay 3 or 4 days. We can't imagine staying anywhere but the Sands. Great staff, super location, excellent lounge and restaurant, very comfortable and clean rooms.......all of these things add up to a trip we look forward to every year.

    « Hubby's birthday »

I wanted to take my husband on an over-nighter to Vancouver for his birthday this year. We stayed at the best western plus sands and it was awesome! I booked it online and under the "special requests" box I asked if they could have one of those happy birthday foil helium balloons in the room ready for us. I totally forgot I had asked and when we got there, it was floating above the bed and my husband was so happy! The bed was so comfortable and the pillows were amazing! Not the normal neck cranking, can't sleep type, but actually very comfortable! I almost want to see where they get them from. Front desk staff was very polite and helpful as well. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

« Clean and Friendly Hotel »

We are enjoying every time we stayed with Best Western. The staffs always friendly and helpful. Very clean inside the room and got a good coffee and TV. Most of Best Western are pet friendly when we need to travel with my dog a lot.

« Nice place and great location »

Very nice hotel and area was great. Super friendly staff, and super clean room, I highly recommend this hotel if you want clean, nice and close to beach. The staff offered a coupon for our dinner plans, so let them know where you plan to eat you may get lucky too.

    « Mouse in Room »

I stayed two nights at this hotel in Downtown Vancouver for work. My stay was good and comfortable. My co-worker reported a mouse in her room when checking out and the staff said that she should have reported it earlier and they would have moved her. They also offered free parking to make up for the mouse. My co worker asked to speak with a manager and there wasn't one working in the morning. I wasn't impressed with the service. I would avoid this hotel if you can. For 200 a night rooms and the location it should be better.

    2
« Location but nothing else »

If you want to stay in the heart of Vancouver's Westend, I suggest the Coast on Denman. If you want a BW downtown, try the BW Chateau on Granville. The fifth floor suite is not big enough for entertaining and even if you do most of your guests won't appreciate the view of derelict homes or grubby rooftops. The standard rooms are just for sleeping but don't try to change anything more than your mind in the tiny bathrooms.

« Will stay here again! »

Great location. Can't beat this price for downtown Vancouver. Close to the water. The bus stop is right across the street. You can also rent bikes from a place right across the street. We stayed on the 2nd floor and it was quiet. Lots of great restaurants very close by. It's an older hotel but clean and we didn't spend a great deal of time in the hotel as there's so much to see and do in the area.

« Great location, great stay! »

As other reviewers have said, the location of this hotel is fantastic for exploring Stanley Park, the seawall, downtown shopping and even Granville Island market and vicinity. If you want to take the bus, there are several that stop right in front of the hotel. Everything you could possibly want to eat or drink is right in the neighbourhood - there are lots of coffee shops and restaurants of every description nearby. And of course, English Bay is minutes away! Our room on the 5th floor had a balcony and a view of the water - it was so pleasant to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. The hotel is clean and comfortable, and the service we received was always friendly and helpful. We only had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, but it was really good. Another plus - the room had a fridge and small microwave, and decent in-room coffee! We will certainly stay here again when we have opportunity.

    « Our Favorite »

Great location to Stanley Park, shopping and restaurants, recently upgraded. We have been staying at the Sands for years, Convenient to English Bay. You can walk to Robson Street, the main shopping street in Vancouver or take the city bus right outside the hotel.

« Central hotel, good neighborhood to visit Vancouver »

If you're looking for a central hotel near Stanley Park, this would be your best choice for your visit to Vancouver. The hotel is across the street from the start of the sea walk, so you can walk to Stanley Park without all the parking expenses. There are many good restaurants on Davies and Denman Street, you will have all the food choices with reasonable price. Tim Horton is across the street, Starbuck is on your right hand side at the corner. The bed is comfortable and the room is clean and functional. There is NO breakfast and the parking will be extra charges, but it is really worth the daily parking fee. Say hello to Brice and Miguel at the front desk, they are the best employees with all the knowledge of local area as what to do/see. I did not eat the restaurant downstairs, but the menu looks very tempting. Overall, this is an excellent hotel to stay, has been at this hotel 3 times and happy each time I stayed here. Highly recommended.

    « Great »

It was a pleasant surprise! I will start off with the worst things about the hotel: Lobby and the lift. It looked very dated and I was expecting the room to be the same. That's about all. Room: New, clean, large and modern. We booked the cheapest one on Expedia. Comes with free food coffee. Toilet: looks dated but clean and functional. Location: Again I was very surprised how accessible the hotel is. There is no subway station nearby and it's located on a far corner of Vancouver based on what I see on the map. Don't be deceived. There are 3 bus services #5, #6, #23 right in front of the hotel. #5,6 goes to downtown and Vancouver City Centre station in 10mins, #23 goes to yaletown roundhouse station, Granville Island is accessible by #6 and changing to #50 at Granville street. The bus service is reliable and regular. The hotel is located a short walk away from English Bay beach. Vancouver is a very walkable city. Overall, I will staying in this hotel again if I were to return to Vancouver.

    « 4 Stars??? Unfortunately not. »

I had high hopes for this place considering the reviews and ratings on this website. Unfortunately I would not stay here again. Pros: - Very Friendly and accommodating staff. -Great location in terms of shops and restaurants and close to the bay. -Great restaurant/bar downstairs -Comfy beds. Cons: -We booked a adjoining room with my elderly inlaws. The door between the rooms was locked and the staff did not have a key. This made life difficult -The AC unit itself did not consistently work. -Room was not the cleanest at all. -Bathtubs in both rooms and pieces of the fiberglass missing which was abrasive to your feet and could probably cut you if the angle was right. -Pillows are horrible and need to be replaced. -PARKING is not guaranteed even though you pay the nightly fee. They have 1 main lot with 2 floors and then a overflow down the street. We had to park in the overflow down the street 2 out of the 3 nights. Our last night we weren't even able to secure a spot so we had to park on the street a block away. I get it. Its a best western and not a HILTON. That being said the basics unfortunately were not covered well.

    « Great location »

The location is the most important thing about this hotel; denman and davie, across from english bay. The suites on the top floor provide a small deck where you can view the ocean. Lots of interesting eating places within walking distance. The rooms are clean and modern but not really luxurious; would go back. I increased the rating to 4 based on the location.

    3
    « Good location »

This hotel was comfortable and the location was very good. Within walking distance of many good restaurants. End of a tour run by Road's Scholars. Most of our trips were done by tour bus, i.e. parks and museums. This hotel's breakfast wasn't great though, but there was a Starbucks down on the corner.

    3
« Good location and staff »

Had no problem with the staff or the location just the fact the deposit was 250 and it took days to reflect on my credit card. This is a huge pain when you are travelling and I wasn't impressed that it took from checkout on the 13th till the 18th to clear. An example of another hotel which was 4 stars cleared the next day and was 125 security deposit. The elevator has this jumpy feel when you stop which gave me a heartache the first few times. Would stay there again but definitely prepare for the delay with the deposit refund.

    4
« A WELL LOCATED AND REASONABLY PRICED HOTEL »

Excellent location near to Stanley Park and False Creek ferry link to Granville Island with a wide range of restaurants within easy walking distance. Also good public transport links to other parts of the city right out side the hotel. The rooms in the hotel are well appointed and have recently been updated and redecorated although our bathroom was looking tired and needed refurbishing. Helpful and pleasant staff add to the overall experience of staying here.

    « Perfect pre-cruise hotel »

We booked this hotel because it is convenient to the cruise terminal, a short ride away. The check in was fast and efficient, our room was comfortable, and the bedding was very good. The bathroom tended to be a bit small, though. There is a Tim Horton across the street and a Starbucks at the end of the block. I remember the muffins at Horton's from previous trips to Canada and they are always super. We ate a quick meal at the Safeway Market Sandwich Deli a short distance down the street; very good and inexpensive. A taxi appeared almost instantaneously after calling for one and it was just a short trip to the terminal. Would definitely use this property again if the need arose.

    3
« Great location in the west end »

The room was adequate. The food was adequate. Problems with electrical systems and phones did occur and were not promptly attended to for repairs. However, I would probably chance staying there again because of the location but adding a hotel shuttle would be a great plus.

    5
    « Excellent location »

perfect location right near the beach. we even had a view of the water from our room. the hotel wasn't as modern as others but this was a early good price considering the location. rooms were big too. didn't eat in restaurant but other guests told us the food was really good. I'd definitely stay here again amd will be returning to vancouver real soon

    4
    « Good combo »

Price vs location vs amenities this place is a good combo. Although an older style of hotel, the features are still in good condition, and the experience overall is very good. Yes there is a bit of road noise, but thats the price you pay for transport to anywhere in Vancouver being literally at the door.

    4
« Lovely stay in Vancouver »

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Best Western Plus Sands in vancouver and could not fault the stay. Our room was well equipped, microwave, fridge, great Wifi and coffee maker and I was provided with a travel cot for my daughter. Our room was 427 overlooking English Bay and we were not disrupted by noise but to be fair we were only there to sleep (too much to see and do!). The beach and park are on your doorstep and a walk up Denman street or Davie Street had you where you wanted to be in no time at all. Plenty of choice for food all around and a friendly Starbucks just a few yards away. For the price and location alone I will definitely stay again!

    3
    « centrally located »

walking distance to everywhere, restaurants, beach, parks, bridge, bars, many ethnic places to eat etc. lively downtown area, yet quieter than one would expect at night. and now this part of the survey is getting too long lol.

    3
    « Plus ....the noise »

A great location adjacent Stanley Park and English Bay with restaurants and entertainment within walking distance. The room on the fifth floor had a balcony overlooking the street but sadly the windows allowed the street noise to permeate the room environment. When I enquired on check-in if upgrades were available I was told all rooms were recently renovated and were the same. Not true! Regardless the bed was comfortable and the location made up for any hotel deficiencies.

    5
    « A comfortable and affordable hotel »

A good hotel at a price that won't make your eyes burn out is not easy to find in Vancouver. However this place is just perfect when you don't want to break the bank. Off season rates are very reasonable for a pleasant hotel close to everything and on the bus line to all the sights. A recent update has provided nice work desks and a microwave. Pleasant staff. This is our home away from home when we visit Vancouver. A big plus is a good supply of dog friendly rooms.

    5
« great location, efficient and attentive staff »

Enjoyed our summer stay, nice welcome, room overlooking the main road, plentiful parking. Did not eat at the restaurant but Tim Horton's directly across the street, handy for a cheap breakfast. Also many eateries a short walk away. Nice clean room and en suite, would stay again.

    3
    « Basic dated hotel »

Awful customer service from the front desk in need of updating very over priced for the condition plus points look out to English bay and excellent bus route I love Vancouver and would return again but to a hotel I've used before

    « the perfect stay »

the hotel was perfect in every way, very nice rooms, quiet and clean.the staff is helpful and professional.the restaurant and lounge in the hotel served high quality food at good prices, the bacon is to die for.The happy hour is a nice touch.overall it was a very satisfying experience.Next time we go to Vancouver,we will check in at the Sands again. We'd be crazy not to.

    5
« A nice hotel to spend time in Vancouver »

My boyfriend and I really had a good time staying at the Best Western Sands. The rooms could be a little more up to date, but in general, everything was neat. We were on the fourth floor and we did not hear any noise from the outside, we slept really well. The hotel is well situated, just across the street from English Bay beach and the beginning of Stanley Park, in a great neighborhood. The staff was polite, at front desk, the restaurant and the room service. We really had a good time in Vancouver! :)

    3
« They will call pest control »

Rooms, bathrooms, bath amenities, coffee and tea facilities, microwave, frige and mainly the location would be perfect if we didn´t find a mouse in our room the last day we were there. It run quickly under the sofá (we took a picture before it disappears under the sofá). Checking out we told to the staff. The only words we heard was: We will call the pest control. Nor even we are sorry. We didn't have enough time cause we had a fligth back to Brazil and taxi to the airport was waiting but it is a good reason to ask for indemnity. As a physician I say that this is a public health problem.

    3
« Book Top Floors and Bring Your Earplugs! »

First off, we will return here even with the noise issues from the street. Do not stay in room 118. It must have been the last room when we booked. The street noise was louder on the 1st flower than the 3rd floor, but 118 is also next to soda machine, elevators and the loud closing door to the stairs. The bathroom faucet was not working properly and although they gave us earplugs and a fan to create white noise, it was simply disappointing. Their fee for the night did not come close to the value offered and they knew it and cut the rate and moved us upstairs two floors. Rm 326 was an upgrade. The rooms are smaller than US rooms and the bathroom is very small, no fan, and fluctuating shower water temps, but with the wall of windows overlooking the water (english bay beach) and windows that opened, it created a nice effect of added space. The view from here is great with sunsets on boats in the bay. The back side of the hotel is on an alley but I cannot imagine it is much quieter. The windows are an issue. So, the hotel is updated (windows are NOT) but it has a bit of an older feel to it which the location will help you forget about. You are right next to Stanley park, the beach and shops of all variety. Location is the biggest offering here and why we will stay again. You can get up, rent a bike or walk/jog through the park and grab breakfast up the street at the Red Umbrella Cafe. You will pay about $18 for daily parking in a tight lot. We had a fridge, coffee maker and microwave in each room. The front desk staff were great. I would suggest they let folks know that noise is an issue though. We did not sleep through any of the nights due to street noise-bars letting out, deliveries in the am... ...try for higher floors!

« Dining in the Park Way restuarant in the Best Western Hotel »

Went into the Park Way restuarant in the Best Western Hotel on Davie Street a good few times for meals they were always very good. On our last vist two weeks ago we were very disapointed by our server, she did not seem interested in serving us she was too busy talking with her friends. The bar person came over to get our drink order and asked her to come over to us to take our meal order. We eventually received our meal which was not great it was disapointing to say the least. When we had finished we waited for what seemed ages to pay our bill, we had to call over another server to get our bill but as she had not served us she went to get our server. Needless to say she did not get the usual 15% tip.

    5
« Excellent location and room »

Just at English Bay on Davie St make the location really spectacular. Walking distance to a lot of restaurants (West End, Davie St; Granville; Yaletown). Room is comfortable, clean and functional. Handy Pub attached to the lobby hotel

    4
    « Convenient location »

Very convenient location; close to Stanley Park, beach and restaurants; steps to Tim Horton. The room is spacious and clean although it is a little dated. We could leave the car at the hotel and walk to the beach and the Park.

    5
« Great location for Stanley Park and English Bay »

Location wise if you are wanting to be near Stanley Park and English Bay, 2 min walk to the beach for sunset. Perfect. I was on the back of the hotel not with the nicest view and no sunset views unless you count the reflection in the windows. Comfortable and clean room, though not feeling the most modern. Ear plugs needed if you are a light sleeper as there is a bit of noise from outside. It is single glazed which I think doesn't help. Staff pleasant and friendly. TIP: If you're staying 2 or more nights and do not get your room serviced, you get rewarded for being green and get a $10 voucher off either restaurant, which are both good value anyway.

    5
    « Glacier Trip »

The location for this hotel is excellent! It's right by the waterfront and near coffee shops, restaurants and other places to shop. The parking costs extra but our vehicle was safe and secure during our stay

    2
    « Mildly disappointed »

We had checked the reviews of this hotel and weren't expecting to find the few things that dissapointed us within in the first 1/2 hour of check in. Initially the one thing I noticed was an odour in the room like mildew which turned out to be the AC unit which was running overtime . This wasn't a problem after shutting it off and opening the window. The next thing we found was the filthy toilet , it was apperent it was not cleaned from the previous guest as there was fresh urine literally dripping off the seat and sides . A quick call to the desk and cleaning staff was in the room tending to the bathroom.

« Nice finish to our Alaska cruise! »

After 7 days at sea, we were happy to have our feet back on stable ground with a nice clean room, fresh towels, and no unpleasant surprises. As always, Best Western came through with everything we could ask for and more. Eddy, the hotel manager, was professional, courteous and eager to help with all of our questions and needs. This was our first visit to Vancouver and it won't be our last. We look forward to staying at the BW Plus Sands on our next trip to BC! ~BP

« Sweet hotel on Davie Street »

We were booked into room 322, which faces Davie Street. There was street noise during the day; but it wasn't too bad at night. We could see the ocean through the buildings across the street. The beds were comfy enough. The staff brought our luggage up to our room prior to our actual check-in. Very sweet.

    4
« Great location, great hotel »

Great room, very close to English Bay and short walk to Stanley park. Room 404 was spacious, king bed, lounge, desk, large closet with two suitcase racks. Bathroom is old but decent size and functional except the shower which is terrible. The worst shower I have ever had anywhere in the world (and I've had some bad ones) The heat and water pressure for the bath taps are fantastic, then when you flick it to overhead shower, you lose all heat and all the water pressure. Nice quality linen used in bathroom and on the bed. Staff at front desk friendly and helpful, they allowed us to leave our bags there after checking out and return later to change clothes, freshen up before calling for a taxi for us to go to airport. I reported the shower issue via I think a Booking.com review that was sent directly to me afterwards and the response was that they would rectify the issue for future guests. I hope they have done that. Apart from that issue, it was a great stay and I would stay again (but I would check the shower straight away and ask for another room).

    4
    « Good Service »

We found a problem with the room Expedia had booked us into. You could here the music coming from the bar downstairs. The staff were most helpful finding us an alternative room on the other side of the hotel.

    4
    « Location, location... »

Our room was a little tired but spotlessly clean, to be fair we noticed that a program of refurbishment was underway. Unless you want to be right in the noisy heart of the city you should give this hotel serious consideration, it is close by Stanley Park and the sea but only a short bus ride from downtown (the trolley bus stops immediately outside the hotel). There is a modestly priced restaurant in the hotel but also plenty of variety in the immediate area. Note - as a city hotel there is a daily charge for parking plus a daily tax for "recycling" in addition to the room rate.

    5
    « Pleasantly surprised »

Very cosmopolitan hotel with restaurant in downtown Vancouver BC. Nice room, great front desk staff, and the extra convenience of a lively bar and restaurant on the property. Parking was a little tight but managable.

    2
« Well below Best Western Plus standards »

Hotel walls allowed significant sound transfer; so did the windows re traffic noise. There was insufficient parking. Lobby was not attractive - tired. Staff were casually dressed, not in BW clothing. Bed was OK; room was clean. No breakfast or restaurant

    4
    « Location, Location »

The Best Western Sands Plus is an older hotel which met our needs perfectly. It is located right across from English Bay beach and there are hundreds of eateries close by. The staff was very pleasant and polite. The beds were extremely comfortable. We enjoyed breakfast at their restaurant, $10 for a complete bacon and egg breakfast. I could barely finish it. This is a reasonably priced hotel with a great location.

    4
« Great location, very thin walls! »

Pretty standard hotel with a superb location, right in the heart of the most interesting and scenic part of the city, on bus routes, bike rentals, near Stanley Park etc. The walls however are paper thin. We could hear conversations, phone calls, coughing and more from the adjoining room. Not a big deal as we were tired from walking and slept soundly in the huge and comfortable bed. Leave the air conditioner running for white noise. We were happy with our stay here.

    4
« Nice location - older building kept well »

Nice location with beach and food/drinks within easy walking distance. It is an older hotel that is kept up with nicely. Nice room with an older style window air conditioner that worked well. Not much of a view from here towards the mountains and Stanley Park due to the height of the other buildings in the area. Restaurant attached was relaxing and had pretty good food. Excellent staff at front desk area.

« Great Hotel, Paulette - the Best Manager in the World »

BW Plus hotel is special because it has a soul. Paulette is a great manager that listens to guests and does all she can to accommodate them. My friend and I asked for two separate beds in a room, while originally the room we reserved was King room with one bed. When we came into the hotel and requested a change, even though nothing was much available, Paulette went out of her way to find something for us. Experienced and attentive, she makes this place even more beautiful with her positive, cheerful and caring approach. Room we stayed in was impeccable. Thank you! Will definitely stay at BW Plus again and highly recommend it to any traveller to Vancouver, BC.

    2
« All sorts of noise »

Stayed here for two nights. The location is great - lots of restaurants in the area, and close to the English Bay. The hotel looks very shabby and needs a makeover. There was a lot of noise in the room, the elevator made noise all time, the refrigerator was humming all the time and if you turned on the A/C you couldn't have a normal conversation in the room. I wouldn't stay here again.

    5
« Good value, Good Location »

Stayed 3 nights in August and enjoyed our stay. Our king room was a good size with everything we needed. The location is great being near the beach, bars, restaurant and Stanley Park. They had great deals for breakfast and dinners in the attached restaurant. Would stay again.

    5
« Great Location and Staff »

Our room was large, great beds, quite and clean. The location is wonderful to go to the beach, walk to Stanley Park, and other sites. We got in late evening and the staff was wonderful with quickly getting us checked in and provided information about breakfast and things to do in the area. They provided maps and suggestions on what to see and do in the area. Before the trip I talked to staff several times on the phone and each time they were helpful and provided the requested information quickly and as it turned out, correctly. I would have no hesitations on returning and highly recommend this to families and those looking for an affordable and convenient place to stay that is clean, comfortable and convenient.

    3
    « Noisy and small »

We only stayed for two night. Our room was just next to the elevator so we had a lot of noise also during the night from the elevator going up and down. There was no real air con just a fan cooperated into the window which was so loud and noisy we had to turn it off in order to be able to sleep. Also the plumbing was making a lot of noise. It seems like whenever somebody flushed all the water ran through the walls in our room. The water pressure in the shower was really bad and the water changed from warm to low all the time. The room was really small but ok. The staff was super friendly and helpful - nothing to complain about there. Parking fee was OK approx 14 CAD per day. The location was fine but I would definitely try another hotel next time being in Vancouver.

« Great Location, Great Value »

We stayed at this hotel for five nights in December last year, and we had a fantastic stay. The rooms are quite large and had plenty of space for all of us, plus our bags -this was five nights at the beginning of a five week journey, so we had a lot of luggage with us (we had two rooms between five of us). Plenty of power-points for charging our laptops, phones, camera's etc. Location-wise it was perfect for access to Stanley Park, and the English Bay area in general. Very easy access to Downtown areas, and if you don't feel like walking, the trolley's stop right outside. The decor is a little old, and the rooms were quite dark, however that would be the only area for improvement. Staff were great, and the Bar/Restaurant downstairs had some brilliant deals while the NHL games were on, and breakfast was great value. Would definitely come back here again.

    « location, location, location »

This is an older hotel in need of renovation and sound proofing. The staff does what it can to make up for these deficiencies, but they can only do so much. The location is super and is in a happening neighbor. I might stay here again, but would spend time looking for quieter accomdations in the area.

« Ideally located, great hotel. »

We stayed for 4 nights. Perfect location for walking to all areas. Right by the beach and close to Stanley Park but still walkable to downtown, Canada place, Gastown etc and ferry to Granville island just round the corner. Bus stops right outside. Great choice of breakfast and bar, restaurant good for dinner. Very comfortable room. Only criticism was room was very hot but aircon worked ok. Would definitely return.

« Ideal place to stay for getting around Vancouver »

The most unfortunate thing about staying here was that unbeknown to us we had picked the busiest weekend of the year. We had booked the hotel about 10 or 11 months in advance but we're disappointed that the costs had risen. We didn't pay for what was going on as we wanted to be the tourist and see what Vancouver had to offer. With roads closed we found it a bit difficult to get about. We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights and in prime position for English Beach and Stanley Park. You don't necessary need a car as there is trolley buses/buses outside the hotel, no good when the roads are closed. Parking is ok. They have an open air one and one underneath easily accessible to get into the hotel.Disabled parking is underneath. Our room overlooked the car park so was quite cool. It was clean and had ample storage/hanging space. The room was clean if not a bit dated. We had clean towels each day.Bed was comfortable. There is also tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast isn't included in the rate so you can use the restaurant which is attached to the hotel. It has a pretty standard menu with prices fairly reasonable and well cooked. Some days you have to wait a bit. Otherwise not a bad stay, hotel just needs a bit of a makeover.

« Always a Great Place to Stay »

Great location, great staff, great rooms, great lounge/restaurant ! Perfect place to use as a base for exploring English Bay and Stanley Park, or for exploring the city. Food in the Bayside Lounge is really good and not expensive. Great views of the bay area too.

« Great Location and Great Staff »

Stayed here twice recently during a 2 week road trip and both times we had a fantastic time. Party of 2 adults and 2 children, we reserved a 2 queen bedded room. Our first stay was on the 2nd floor facing the rear of the property. Good sized room, comfortable beds, small-ish bathroom but adequate nonetheless. Air con was very loud but strangely soothing! Not the best view but that's not the Hotels fault. One issue I had was no room safe, which found odd but reception does hire them out (small enough for passports and some money etc). I would have liked to have signed something declaring what I was leaving with them for insurance purposes. Second stay we had a similar room on the 3rd floor but this time facing Davie Street with sea views. Much smaller rooms in comparison but you do get the view so its a catch 22. All rooms had microwave and fridge with coffee machine which was replenished with house keeping. Check in staff all very helpful throughout the stay, on hand with any questions from places to see to what number buses to catch. Great location, a stone throw from English Bay and 15 minutes to Stanley Park. Bus number 6 stops out front and takes you to City Centre Mall where you can catch the Sky Train out to the Airport, costs $4 per person. Good restaurant/pub attached to the hotel with lots of happy hour deals on food and drink. It is a little dated but for me it was quite nostalgic, its a good 3 star hotel and if you book in advance you will be able to book some very decently priced rooms. Would highly recommend to those wanting a beach location but still within walking distance to other part of the City.

    « Loved the location »

This is a nice hotel to stay. The location is really great, with Stanley Park and the beach nearby. We had breakfast at the hotel once. Breakfast was quite good. Good value for your money too. The rooms were comfortable and clean and had a good wifi. All personnel were really friendly. We stayed here in July (2 nights) and in August (3 nights). It was quite hot when we were there, so naturally we switched on the airconditioning. Although the rooms have recently been renovated, the airconditioners are old and make a terrible racket! They really, really need to be replaced.

    3
« Location great hotel a bit dated »

Great location and the rooms were clean and adequate. Nothing to rave about but it is near English Bay & Stanley Park which is fab. For Vancouver it is reasonable. Rooms had air con and are quiet (except for ones by lift!). Go to Cactus Club around the corner for a wonderful meal and view.

    « Great place!!!! »

We stayed two nights. The staff could not have been better. Nice little restaurant right in the hotel. Food is good and the prices are reasonable. During my trip, I injured my leg. They leant me a wheelchair at no charge for my entire stay. Very clean with nice rooms. Also it is a great location. Many restaurants, stores, and the beautiful ocean and Stanley park within a short walk. Thanks Best Western Sands for a great stay!!!!!

The hotel is very pleasant. The staff at the front desk is fantastic. They are courteous, knowable and wry efficient. The rooms Re spacious. We could control our own Airconditioning so the room was very comfortable. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

« Great Hotel for Touring English Bay Area »

We visited Vancouver with a tour group three years ago and stayed here. Quick to make reservations there before our recent return to Vancouver because of its prime location in a very popular part of town. It is a block from English Bay with its beach and especially access to Stanley Park where we spent more time than on our first trip. There are several restaurants right around the beach for good food and sunsets and more shops and restaurants on Denman Street around the corner. Our room was of generous size with all the amenities including sinks in the bathroom and by the coffee maker. The room would benefit from updating, but considering the reasonable rates and location we would stay there if in Vancouver again.

    4
    « Good resort hotel »

From our arrival, early at 11 am, when our room was ready to our departure a week later we were very happy with this hotel. It is in perfect position for English Bay but still close to all downtown attractions. Arriving from a cruise it was only a short taxi drive from the terminal. There are numerous eating places nearby providing many varieties of food. Our room was reasonable size with good bed and smallish bathroom. The reception staff were all particularly friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone who wants to combine sightseeing with a little R and R on the beach.

    « Road trip 2016 »

We stayed in this hotel last summer and were very impressed so we booked it again this summer. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. We arrived early and were able to check in at noon and park the car. Great location in English Bay. Room was very clean, comfortable king size bed. Will return in the future.

    « A reasonable hotel »

My first time in West Vancouver (from CA) so I wasn't sure what to expect but the hotel was comfortable and reasonable for being located right by the beach. The bar downstairs was pretty cool and seemed to be ?the Spot? to be at for the Super bowl?GO BRONCOS! We didn't stay much at the hotel because we were out and about being tourists but overall I/we had a good experience and would stay here again. The location was great!

    « Appalling »

This hotel is a waste of time to stay at. We stopped there one night, got put in possible one of the oldest rooms there with a very outdated a/c unit that didn't work. We had to ask 4 times for them to check on it. When they had realized that it didn't work they told us that all the fans were being used so they would need to move us to a different room. Great, or so we thought. The new room was better but still a old outdated window unit a/c unit and the decor was VERY outdated and felt very dirty. For the prices that they are charging I think the place needs a makeover and fast. I would not stay there again.

    « Pre-Cruise stay »

The hotel is in a funky, eclectic part of town. Nice rooms, good pub attached to the hotel, 20 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the cruise port. We walked around the hotel neighborhood - lots of small, local restaurants to choose from, great park to walk around, beach area super close, Stanley Park just down the street - in other words plenty of things to explore if you are so inclined. The hotel itself feels a bit tired, but everything was in fine working order, clean rooms and baths, it was a good choice for our pre-cruise needs.

    5
« Comfortable and great location. »

We had a lovely 2 night stay at Best Western. We loved the location, so close to the beach and lovely walkways and away from the hustle and bustle of the main business district, but still an easy quick bus trip into the main shopping area of the city. We enjoyed the sunsets and a lovely meal at restaurants overlooking the beach. Our room was spacious enough and the bed very comfortable.

    3
« A reasonable hotel in the tourist district »

This hotel is on a busy road in a main tourist area. It can get loud at times - traffic, restaurants with a/c, excited voices. The building is a bit older but still adequate. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Parking is accessed via a tiny side street at the back of the hotel. It is off Denman, parallel to Davie, and does not appear to have a name. WLAN is free and unprotected. We did not visit the restaurant.

    « Just OK »

Stayed 5 nites. Arrived after visiting Whistler at the tail end of Pride Parade (who knew - nobody said a word about parade at time of booking last April!) with some difficulty due to road closures and one-way streets. To clarify, no issue with parade, but would have appreciated a heads up from the hotel that access would be difficult / restricted on our arrival). Due to delays getting to hotel we needed quick check-in and help with directions to get to car rental return location in short remaining time available. Young front desk clerk well-intentioned but useless. Our room on "premium floor" very dated with extremely limited view of English Bay, despite requesting room with good view of Bay months earlier. Mini fridge there, but previously requested microwave absent. Delivered on request within the hour. Changed rooms after first night for better view. Room still just ok, bathroom badly needed attention. Water temp fluctuates during shower, tub started to fill requiring adjustment with each shower, cracks in floor, towel shelf in need of repair. Learned of breakfast special by coincidence on day 2, be sure to ask as it could save you about $4 per person per day if u breakfast at hotel. Hello Best Western, we expect better of you! This is a prime location for which you ask a good price, time to step up!

« Staff was great + rooms need tlc »

We stayed here for a week. The location is great. Super close to almost everything you could need. Hotel room was ok. Air conditioner kind of works. Does not cool the room down very well . Shower kind of works.biggest complaint is Everytime the elevator stops at a floor it shakes so loud it actually woke me up in my room a few times!it's really loud and doesn't seem normal. Wifi was good. Beds were compy. Room was nice a big. It's an old hotel. Definitely could use a face lift or Reno. The staff have all been amazing and the food in the restaurant was very good. Breakfast , lunch and supper were all perfect. Just needs some upgrades. Ide give it at 7/10 and it's purely cosmetic.

« Great Location. Wonderful Staff. Older Structure. Decent Value. »

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. The first night was hot and uncomfortable as the air conditioner did not work. It was an older window air conditioner in need of replacement. When I discussed this with the front desk, Paulette, quickly offered to change our room to a different room with a newer window air conditioner. The new room was much more comfortable. This hotel is located within a block of English Bay with water, bike paths, and a park. Denman Street, with its many wonderful ethnic restaurants, is 1/2 block away. You couldn't ask for a better location. While the building is older, it is well maintained. Our room was always clean and the beds were comfortable. The two restaurants on site offered a good value for their meals and have daily drink specials . One of them has great views of English Bay. Stay here. You won't regret it. Everyone we met on the staff is friendly and helpful. On-site parking is available for an additional cost.

« Really really nice hotel »

The reviews were all pretty good. I took a gamble booking for my husband and me and two other couples prior to our Alaskan cruise. What a delight! Rooms were comfortable and clean with views of the bay. The restaurant/bar was fun and food delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay and would recommend to anyone. The location is walking distance to Stanley park and many great restaurants and a short taxi ride to the cruise terminal. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and courteous.

« A little tired looking but well located. »

The hotel could do with a little sprucing up but we found it clean and the staff were very friendly. It is well positioned for the price being close to Stanley Park, English Bay beach and a short bus ride into the centre (you must have the correct fare $2.75 single). We also ate in their sports bar as we couldn't be bothered to wander on the first night (jet lag) and the meal was good (so long as you don't mind various sports blaring out from a dozen tvs). There are restaurants nearby and the famous restaurant road (Denman St) is a short walk away. Also, Red Umbrella Café is a short walk for a great breakfast/lunch. Recommended for its location and friendly staff.

    « Location, Location, Location »

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights in August. The hotel staff was very nice and bed was very comfortable and the room was clean, however the rooms are VERY small, dated and in need of some TLC. Our door was rubbing up against the door jam which made it difficult to open and close, the wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling off, damage to door/walls that had been painted over instead of repaired and overall dated decor. The rooms came with a fridge and A/C, which was a bit noisy so we just opened the window. We were facing the parking lot and hardly heard any noise at all. Parking is $17.00 a day, but if you have a truck you might have a hard time pulling in as many of the stalls are very narrow. The real selling feature to this hotel (and the only reason I would stay here again) is the location! You can walk to English bay beach, Stanley park, Granville street, Gas town, and take a water taxi to Granville island. There are many restaurants and pubs within a 5 min walk, including cactus club which is located right on English Bay beach and has spectacular ocean views. We would always have a night cap at 3 Brits pub-great place to have a drink and people watch. Walk up Davie street and you will find lots more restaurants, pubs and shops. If you can look past the dated decor, this is a comfortable, clean hotel with a great location.

« Solid Best Western with a few cautions. »

Conveniently located 2 blocks from English Bay, this is a great starting point to many Vancouver sights. It is, however, also located next to a noisy bar/disco that pounded away until the early hours Saturday night. There is also a lot of street noise. That is probably true with all downtown hotels. The room looked clean, the beds were comfortable, the staff was friendly. The only problem we had was a sticky bathroom door and door to our room that took some heft to open and therefore were quite noisy. Breakfast was not included, but there is a Starbucks a block down that opens early. There are many restaurants close by. There is frozen yogurt within a few blocks walk. Transportation: Bus 5 stops right in front, but takes cash only. We did not have Canadian cash. We got tickets from a vending machine at the waterfront station bought with credit card. We took a taxi from Canada Place to hotel, it was about $10. We stayed at an older nearby hotel 2 years ago. This BW is a huge improvement over that choice. I would stay here again if I would visit Vancouver again.

    « Great location »

I found this little gem and it was centrally located to Stanley park and transportation that could get you all over the city. The hotel was nice and clean and the beds were not tired out. Cleanliness, helpful staff, good bar and restaurant...I'd highly recommend you give this place a try

« Excellent Hotel in English Bay »

The hotel is located on Davie St. in the thick of the action in English Bay. The hotel room was well appointed and very comfortable. We had a balcony from which we could see English Bay. I would stay there again.

« Great Value and great location »

I have returned here after a great stay a couple of years ago and it again it hasn't disappointed. Staff are very helpful, the rooms are very clean and come with a fridge and coffee and tea making facilities as well as an ironing board and iron, hairdryer etc. The location could not be better, especially on a pride/firework weekend.

    5
« Nice hotel close to the water »

The hotel was nice and has had some renovation done on it, staff were very friendly throughout the stay, the beds were very comfortable. Need better elevator system as they do not work with the keys 90% of the time.

« Spacious room, location great »

While it might be a little bit dated, the location of this hotel can't be beaten. We'll be back to stay here again purely for that reason - just a short stroll from Stanley Park and English Bay. Tim Horton's directly across the street and plenty of restaurants around the area. Bike hire directly across the street aswell. Buses out the front but we didn't use them. Had a room not facing Davie Street and was quiet. Parking seemed pretty tight, one spot left when we arrived and is charged extra. We had a room with 2 queen beds which when you're a couple, is good because it provides extra spaced to put your bags on etc. Had a slight mishap with our room on the 2nd night, so we were moved and upgraded as well as offered free breakfast vouchers for use in the downstairs restaurant. But both rooms were roomy, with a hanging space and a good bathroom. We'll be back here again for its convenient location for exploring Stanley Park (saves any parking/transportation costs).

    « Great location! »

This hotel is perfectly located, just steps away from English Bay in downtown Vancouver. It is walking distance to Stanley Park, Granville Island market, plus there are many good restaurants and shops close by. Rooms are clean and comfortable, except for the air conditioning which did not cool the room properly.

    4
    « A good, friendly hotel. »

When we first got to the hotel the reception staff were very friendly and helpful, we chose this hotel because it's near the beach on English Bay. The hotel itself is a little dated and somewhat tired, the rooms are a good size, the bed was comfortable, but there was not a safe in our room. Allowing for all of this we had a great stay because the hotel has a very friendly atmosphere with helpful staff. The hotel also has a popular bar and restaurant, we had 2 good meals in there and the prices were reasonable. The hotels location is great for Stanley Park, it's also easy to get to the other side of English Bay and we would definitely stay there again.

« Great location-walk to Stanley Park, along English Bay and the West End. »

We spent six nights at the Sands Hotel and enjoyed the time. Easy walk to Stanley Park, along English Bay and other places in the West End. Bus stop for #5 and 6 buses right outside the door. Many restaurant choices along and near Denman and Davie streets. Hotel restaurant was good for breakfast and dinner, especially the 6 oz sirloin. We had a premium room on the 5th floor which was spacious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. It is an older hotel with window air conditioning units.

    2
    « Average »

Location great but after that with the exception of the staff it was just a bog standard city centre hotel. Staff we met were excellent. We had a room on the first floor. Most of the rest were in some status of renovation. Why are hotels not honest about what is going on in them. It did not cause a problem but I like honesty rather than a surprise on arrival. Restaurant food OK but nothing special. Pub food in the UK.

    4
« Quiet west end of Vancouver »

Location is at west end which is quieter but it still close to Robson street. Close to Stanley Park where you can relax watching sunset, biking, or just walk around enjoying the bay area. The room is comfortable and can sleep for a family of 4. There are lots of eating places around too. Bus stop is just at the doorstep.

« Great Place to Stay in Vancouver »

Location, Location, Location.....it is a mere 1/2 block to the ocean and some nice walks and sunsets. We love how central this hotel is downtown, Stanley Park, Granville Island and a longer walk (or bus ride) to Rogers Arena or BC Place. Really like this hotel!

« Good hotel in a great location at a reasonable price »

I had booked this hotel quite ahead of time and hence the price then was reasonable for an expensive city as Vancouver. The location is great : close to Stanley Park and downtown which is nice and allows you to walk either way. Many shops and restaurants in the vicinity. I had asked for a quiet room and we got a room to the back which was indeed quiet, since instead of having the aircon on, we could sleep with an open window. The view is maybe not so nice, but we didn't go to Vancouver for the view out of our hotel room ! The atmosphere is a bit shabby, unfortunately. Maybe the last refurbishment is a while ago. Reception area is rather dark and uninviting with a small reception desk. Check in was quick and smooth. As was the check out. Also the corridors were dark. Our room was large and had 2 queen beds, writing desk and 2 chairs. There was plenty of space to hang clothes. The bathroom was rather small, but OK. There was also a small fridge which didn't cool very well. Wifi signal was good. We stayed 6 nights and didn't have any problem whatsoever.

« Reasonable, Comfortable, Perfect Location »

I love Vancouver and treasure the trips when we can just walk from Chinatown to Stanley Park. And the Sands is incredibly close to Stanley Park and the sea wall path. The hotel isn't new, but it's clean, comfortable and for my tastes, well located. It's in the West End on Davie and that means that lots of mod con are nearby, but its not nearly as loud at night as a hotel on Burrard, or heaven forbid, Granville. The hotel's not large, but the bars open late and the service friendly. We did pass on the karaoke, though. Our room was extra clean and had a wonderful bow window facing the street. Made it feel much bigger, because the room wasn't small, but not spacious, either. The bathroom was small (the two of us couldn't fit without quite a dance) but spotlessly clean. Some nice soaps that didn't tear my skin up. Eco-friendly, too. I don't know if we had neighbors, we didn't hear anything from either guests in the hall, or other rooms. Sands has reasonable parking on site (but be warned, the spaces are VERY cozy. I have a MINI Cooper and it was a tight fit). I've always thought Vancouver to be one of the best walking cities (Boston, Auckland and Seattle, too) and we walk everywhere when we visit. In all honesty, though, although it's close enough to walk (or grab a quick cab if the weather's trying your patience) to most of the great shopping and brilliant food, it may be a little off the beaten path for a first time visit to Van. My advice is to give the map a good look before you book and make sure you don't want to be closer to the action. Lastly, price--during the winter, there's often a Groupon special, but in high season, they're often full up and market priced. I do think for a great, basic hotel in a quiet, yet convenient location, this one's well worth a look.

« Great location, Great Value! »

English Bay Beach is just 2 blocks away, we rented 3 rooms and they were able to put them all in a row. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and the front desk staff were accommodating and arranged to store our bags on our arrival and on the day of our departure at no cost. Check out time is noon. We were on the street side and the noise did not bother us. This hotel is located in the gay pride area of town, but we would not have known except there are more rainbow flags than you see in most neighborhoods. Across the street is a bike rental shop, we rented bikes there and rode around Stanley Park and had a fabulous time. Also walked from the hotel to the aquarium which was not hard, even with children. Plenty of nice restaurants nearby. The walking paths along the bay are great for a morning run!

« Great location near English Bay! »

Great location - short block to English Bay. Restaurants abound but because we had a dog, used room service more than usual. Food was good - pretty typical for a mid priced hotel, although we are not foodies. Staff was very helpful. Parking spaces were tight for an SUV but never had a problem getting a space since there are 3 different small lots. If you have a choice, do not take a car. Vancouver is a nightmare to drive in.

« Easy walk to beach, Stanley Park »

Nice hotel, comfy beds, parking not unreasonably priced..no pool or free breakfast tho. Was minutes walk to beach.. Easy walk to Stanley park and restaurants. Tim Horton's across st. Lots of fast food and convenience/grocery/liquor stores. Nice neighborhood.

    « Great location »

Very good best Western at a prime location. Parking space to be paid but little alternative around. The rooms are clean, space is good, airco is very good. Lots of restaurants nearby, and the beach is just around the corner. I would recommend when in this Area!

« Beautiful Location Close to Stanley Park »

This hotel is showing signs of it age but it is still a good and comfortable place to stay. Just a few metres to the English Bay beach front and Stanley Park is ideal and just to short walk to the city centre. The Bar/ resturant on the ground floor has live music most nights and serves good food and drinks breakfast, lunch and dinner.

    « Fabulous location »

So convenient for Festival of Lights fireworks. 3 minutes walk to bat for evenings entertainment. Great location for English Bay. Fast & helpful checkin, clean, spacious room on 5th floor, if a little dated. Convenient parking which is rare in Downtown hotels. Huge breakfast in Park Bar off reception which was reasonably priced. Would stay again.

    4
    « Good value »

Can't complain about the great price foe being right downtown. We had a great view of English Bay from our room. The rooms were clean. Only issue was Davie St can be quite noisy and the buses are noisy when they are lowering the bus right outside your window all night. Other than that I really enjoyed the hotel.

    5
« Service adds the extra star »

We stayed 5 nights at the hotel and the location was one of the best in the city! The service that the staff offered us was beyond anything we have ever imagined. It made our stay very memorable. We will never forget this hotel. Thank you best western.

« Great location, needs updating »

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Stanley Park and Granville Island, the two places we wanted to visit during our short stay before a cruise. The hotel was moderately priced and it is a great location. You can be at the beach in less than 5 minutes. All the staff were extremely helpful. I had read reviews about this hotel before we left and was under the impression it was being updated/renovated. This was not the case in our experience. The room was pretty nice and the beds were comfy. The bathroom desperately needs to be updated, there were cracks in the tile and ceiling and it was overall pretty dingy. There is no sound proofing in the windows at all so we could hear everything on Davie Street. We also could smell marijuana as if it was being smoked inside our room. The balcony had a lovely view of the beach but also a not so lovely view of Davie Street itself. The fitness room leaves a lot to be desired and I do not think there was a pool. There is a Tim Horton's directly across the street and a wide variety of restaurants, shops, etc very close. I am not sure we would stay here again. Maybe if the hotel was updated or renovated, especially the windows and sound proofing. We found the wifi worked great in our room.

    « Best location - Fantastic service »

We have just stayed 5 nights at this very good hotel. The rooms are clean and spacious, only negative is the air conditioning, which were very old and noisy. The staff were extremely helpful and very competent. They helped us set up a tour for whale safari. The location is best in the city, with a 30 second walk to the beach where there is an amazing sunset every evening. Good restaurant options, both at the hotel and nearby. Thank you for a great stay :)

The hotel is in a great location for the beaches and Stanley Park and only 15 minutes to a water taxi to Granville etc. Room décor is dated and in need of work - new floor tiles would be a good start. Over-priced considering this. Staff were very professional, helpful and friendly at all times.

« Comfortable, clean and convienient »

We stayed at the sands in early July and it was great. if you plan to spend a lot of time at Stanley park the location is perfect. It is a very short walk to English bay and an easy walk to Stanley park itself. I felt safe in the neighbor hood but I didn't go out in the evening. We had a beautiful view from our street side room. The room was clean and in good repair but diffently dated. The staff at the front desk were great and answered all our questions about transportation etc. The room had a refrigerator but no microwave. When we asked we were told they would bring one up to our room. It arrived 20 minutes later. If you're looking for a modern up to date 4 star hotel this isn't it. If you're looking for a comfortable, clean and convienient hotel this is it. We would stay here again.

You cannot beat the location and convenience of this hotel. We stayed for 3 days and we could walk to English Bay, Stanley Park and we close to a vast selection of restaurants and shops. The room was excellent and the staff very congenial and accommodating.

« Expensive For Older Hotel »

We were booked here waiting for a cruise. The location is nice. Coffee across the street, nice walking area along the waterfront. The rooms were ok, nothing special. I guess we were paying for location as one night cost $200 cdn. The breakfast was expensive and not very good for the price although the restaurant service on site was good. Staff at the front desk were very helpful when checking out but be aware: the taxi service SUCKS! We waited over an hour for 3 taxi's (we had a group) to go to Canada Place for our cruise. We had to check with the desk multiple times to have them eventually call a different service to get us. If you don't see your taxi in 10 minutes, make sure you go to the desk to have them recall!

    « Awesome location »

My friend and I stayed here in late April for 2 nights. The location was awesome which helped us save money on a rental car. Stanley Park, the ocean, and water taxis to Granville Island were all in very short walking distance. And, there was plenty of bus stops around to get anywhere else we needed to go to around the city. The room itself was very clean and spacious. The staff was very kind. Also, there is a Tim Hortons directly across the street, and a Starbucks right next door.

« Gem in an expensive town »

What a great little find for less than $100 a night. Clean and accommodating with an in-house bar/food that offered painting classes and live music! It was convenient to many places with ethnic cuisine. Grocery down the street, water from a park across the way, and bus stop right in front. The train station was a bit far but accessible by bus. The whole city has open pot everywhere especially in trendy places. It was less of a hassle down near the sands. The staff was awesome and very international. I would be comfortable bringing children there and elderly people but we were traveling alone this time.

    « Needs Renovation »

This hotel deserves a 2+ by my standards. However, the staff were WONDERFUL so they saved a fair rating by me. The rooms are dark and a bit tacky. Remember the Best Western's in the 70's? This is it!! We had a smallish room (twin share) with a tiny bathroom. Plenty of towels though so that's a +. The food? We were on a tour and we had a buffet dinner one night. Mediocre. Breakfasts were minimal. The choices, or lack thereof, were probably due to what our tour operator was willing to pay. However, the quality, or lack thereof, rests on the shoulder of the hotel. Bar staff, wait staff, front desk staff...all were wonderful!!

« VERY GOOD HOTEL THAT NEEDS A RENOVATION »

A group of us occupied 4 rooms during the CIM Show in May. The rooms were clean, the staff very helpful and the hotel is very close to English Bay and Stanley Park. The hotel has on site parking for a fee that is attached to the hotel, and is very quiet for a downtown hotel. Internet was excellent during our stay. It has an onsite bar that serves food and both the breakfast and dinner I had there was very good. The rooms and windows particularly are showing their age, and definitely need replacement and renovation. Were it not for that, I would have given it 5 stars. I definitely would stay here again, especially if refreshed!!

    « What a mix up »

I booked on line and did not know there was a Vancouver in Washington. We discovered the mistake the day before we were due to arrive. We were booked into The Best Western there. Fortunately the hotel chain did not charge for the three nights in Washington and fortunately also, there was a vacant room at The Best Western in English Bay,Vancouver, Canada. It cost considerably more, but worth every penny due to it's great locational and the luxurious room. The reception staff were very helpful and altogether we had a very memorable stay.

« Great place to stay »

I stayed twice, in May 2016, before and after a cruise. Had a room on the 5th floor both times and the room size is great. Decor efficient if a little tired, but I understand they're working on that. Room was at the front so I enjoyed a nice balcony and a partial view of English bay. It can get a little noisy, but all the noise stopped around 11 at night so that didn't bother me. The people at reception are endlessly patient and helpful. The rooms are kept very clean indeed and I loved the pitcher for water in the bathroom. The one minus is in the bathroom, the bathtub which gets slippery after a shower. Although there is a wall grip, that doesn't help you if you want to get out. The hotel location is great, plenty restaurants, bars and shops around. Two busses have stops right in front of the hotel which is very convenient. If you stay longer and like to use public transport, do get a Compass card. It saves you money and you don't have to worry about the correct change. London Drugs, five minutes from the hotel sells them and also has a machine to load them. I would definitely be back, I enjoyed both stays.

    « Great Location »

Stayed 2 nights in late June. Great staff at this hotel. The location is surrounded by good places to eat, sight see/enjoy. Walking distance to most of city in less than 30min. Room was clean and quiet. Very good beds.

« Nice hotel in a great location »

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was a in a great location in Vancouver so that we had easy access to everything around. Vancouver is a lovely city. The hotel and staff were good. I'd stay again if I find myself back in Vancouver.

    3
    « Evening meal only »

This bar and restaurant has very good food. The only drawback was that it was noisy, with the nearby drinkers and sports channels on the TVs (I counted four), and the staff wouldn't turn the volume down. Very good if you like that sort of thing, but for me it's a minus; so only 3 stars.

« Great Location; close to restaurants and Beach »

Nice, big rooms with microwave and small refrigerator. Room is impeccably clean and front desk is accommodating. Location could not be better. Walking distance to restaurants i.e. European, Indian etc. Markets are nearby as well. Beach is 5 minute walk away.

    4
« Very nice location - parking available - no free breakfast »

The hotel was on a very nice location near the beach. We had a quite room at the back of the hotel. For us it was also important that sufficient parking was available as we wanted to use the car to visit some places. The rate of 15 CAD a night was in our opinion reasonable. The only comment we have is that there is no free breakfast available as we are used in other Best Westerns.

    3
    « Great location »

We chose this hotel for its proximity to Stanley Park and the Aquarium for our first 2 nights in Vancouver before moving to Burrard St. The hotel is friendly but very basic. The room is a great size but the curtains are cut out around the air conditioner and so the room is not very dark at all. Ok stay for what we needed but not a relaxing luxurious stay as it was also very noisy with thin walls.

    4
    « Comfortable 3 Day Stay »

Look beyond the ageing decor you will find a very friendly and comfortable establishment. Staff courteous and helpful, resolving a reported issue immediately. Location and access to the beaches and Stanley Park is the main reason we continue to use this hotel during our visits to Vancouver (third visit). In-house catering very good, with many quality eateries close by.

    « Perfect Location »

Enjoyed our stay at this lovely hotel with amazing friendly staff on the desk restaurants and Bay Side Lounge (Tracy was so sweet) The beds were so comfortable it was hard to get up in the morning. So close to everything and very quiet considering the busy location. Will hope to stay there on every visit we take to Vancouver.

« Very pleasant stay and awesome staff »

We spent four days here on vacation from Australia. What stood out for us the most was the staff. They went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. They were knowledgable on the area and happy to give advice, directions, maps, exchange our money to USD etc. the room was nice, as was the restaurant downstairs. Beds comfy and very clean. Was very happy and would definitely return.

« Amazing staff and a great location »

The staff at this hotel were really incredible. When we checked in early, they gave us one of the 3 rooms ahead so that we could dump our luggage from the cruise ship. They told us all about the city and great things to do, We rented bikes across the street using the hotel's coupons for a small discount. The next day they let us store our luggage there while we bus toured the city. And then, even though we had already checked out, the cust service rep (who was just a trainee) spent a long time trying to hail us a cab that could hold all of our luggage, which meant a van. They had called one, but when it failed to show, the guy went outside and eventually flagged down a cab for us. (Andy was very helpful.) The hotel is in a great location, near a tour bus stop, the bike rental, tons of restaurants, and halfway between Granville island and Stanley park. COuldn't have been better.

    « Look no further! »

The Best Western PLUS Sands exceeded our expectations. If you are traveling to Vancouver to embark on a cruise, this is just the place to stay. It is a $10 (Canadian) cab fare to the docks where they literally drop you off at the door. It is located close to Sherman Park, a Hop On/Hop Off stop, the ferry to Granville Island, a walking/biking trail on English Bay, and the bus stop. If you are thinking of taking the bus, go to the Pharmacy down the street and pick up an all day pass. This was recommended to us by the hotel staff and well worth it. Speaking of the hotel staff, each and everyone on the staff of this hotel was more than helpful, friendly, and very patient. Their knowledge of the area was of great help, better than any information center in the area. Their "we are here for you" is evident from the time you walk into the door. The staff alone made our stay outstanding! The rooms were comfortable and quiet too.

« Good location, nice room »

Stayed for one night last week. The hotel is in a very good location, very near to English Bay, Stanley Park and lots of restaurants. The room was very good and the staff extremely polite and helpful. Only negative is that if you have one of the front bedrooms overlooking Davie St., there appears to be only single glazing meaning you hear a lot of street noise. I was there on a Friday night so that might have increased the noise. I did inform the front desk on leaving and the female manager was extremely good. She informed me that they are planning to refurb the windows in the near future. If you do book into this hotel and dont like too much noise, maybe you could enquire whether work has been done OR ask for room at the back of hotel.

« Love the Hotel and Staff »

I lived in the West End for 20 years West of Denman Street at 1855 Nelson. We moved to Vancouver Island 3 years ago this June. But, whenever we need a Westend fix we stay at the Sands on Davie and Deman. The rooms are perfect for us, the staff is great, friendly and helpful. I consider this a home away from home! The hotel is clean, no problems with taking little critters home with you, which to me is most important! The BIG GREEN CHAIR in each room is the ultimate in comfort, I want to know where I can buy two for our family room??

    5
    « Great location »

Room for 3 of us was spacious and housekeeping service excellent. Staff really friendly and helpful, when our taxi was running very late they offered to take us, but it turned up just in time! Great location for English Bay (lovely running route) and easy walk into downtown Vancouver.

    4
    « Good position,clean,nice staff »

We enjoyed our stay for 5 nights. My only issue was the external noise. From the bar on the ground floor and outside from the street (double glazing would solve that ) The meals within the hotel were good and reasonable in price. The local busses depart from just outside and are very good.We were getting day passes and they enabled us to explore Vancouver. There are many good restaurants close by.

    « Two Nights Pre-Cruise »

After researching our options and reading reviews on TripAdvisor I chose the Best Western Sands Plus for a two night pre-cruise stay. We were a family of six so we booked two rooms with two queen beds each. The rooms were on 2nd and 3rd floor on the back side or Mountain View side. The view was not much to speak of but it didn't really bother us as we pulled the curtains together anyway. The rooms were cool, clean, and quiet. The air conditioner cooled the rom nicely. The beds were very comfortable. I can't say enough about the staff, especially Andy at the front desk. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He answered our many questions and gave great directions. This hotel is a very good value for your money. As stated before on TripAdvisor, this hotel is in a great location to Stanley Park, Sunset Beach, and many restaurants and places to shop. There are bus stops just out the front door, across the street, and at the end of the block for an easy and inexpensive way to get around. We very much enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. We would recommend this hotel to anyone.

    « Great location »

This was our first time in Vancouver and picked this hotel because of the location. We stayed 4 nights. Right at English Bay. A walk along the sea wall to the ferry to Granville island. We walked to Robson street and gastown. Because of the location on a fairly busy street we choose rooms on the 5th floor. One at the front and one at the back. Both rooms were great. Clean and comfortable. Unfortunately we were right the ice machine which was rather noisy and did wake me once or twice. Staff were fantastic, really friendly. We used the restaurant for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had dinner twice. Food was great and reasonably priced. Would definitely stay here again. Wished we had another day or two. Fridges in room. Supermarket just up the road. Restaurant and cafes close.

« Superb hotel and location »

We have stayed multiple times at this property. We love the location next to English Bay and Stanley Park. The neighborhood is lovely------many eateries and stores for shoppiong. It is a lovely walk to the False Creek Ferry to Granville Island and a short walk to the Sea Wall that encircles Stanley Park. We will continue to stay here each time we return to Vancouver.

    « Great Location »

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and bed comfy. We had a room where we could see English Bay with was nice. It is an older hotel which could use some upgrades. We were on the 5th floor and our room had a balcony.

    « Location, Location, Location »

Great if you want to be near English Bay Beach. Easy walking to many restaurants and shops. Older hotel that shows need of upgrades, yet very clean. Very good and helpful staff. Would stay again if in Vancouver.

    « Second visit »

The Sands was just as good this time as four years ago. The location is perfect, right by English Bay and close to Stanley Park, with plenty of shops and restaurants in the vicinity. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the facilities are excellent. Why go anywhere else? You may find more modern and flashy hotels in Vancouver, but you won't find a nicer one.

    « A very average hotel »

We had booked 2 rooms, one for us and one for our older children. The rooms we were allotted were okay but very run down and tired. Our room was very small with an inadequate AC, old and frayed carpet and dust behind all the furniture. The bathroom was small and the shower did not work properly. The children's room was bigger, with a small kitchenette type area which had a microwave. We asked if our room could also be changed to a bigger room like that but we were told that no other rooms were available. And then we spotted a mouse in the children's room! We reported it to the reception and the children's room was changed to a smaller room on the same floor and alas, without the microwave oven! The staff at the reception was nice and immediately offered us breakfast for 4 to compensate for the mouse. That was a good gesture but we kept wondering if we would encounter more rodents during our stay; thankfully we didn't, but if there is one mouse, there are likely to be more. There was some renovation going on and the reception area washrooms were being renovated as well as some of the rooms, I think. Quite noisy during the day in the reception area. Some things were positive about the hotel; the location was great, very close to shops and restaurants and to Stanley Park and English bay. The staff was great; very helpful and they gave us an early check in and late check out. Laundry facilities were good as was the gym. Would I recommend this hotel to others? If you don't mind a run down hotel and give importance to location, then maybe you wouldn't mind staying here.

« Nice Hotel in good location »

This was our first visit to Canada. We arrived jet-lagged from Australia but received a warm welcome. We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It is convenient to the waterfront area and there are plenty of places to eat nearby. The room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was in good condition and very clean. It was easy to check in and out. Happy to recommend this hotel.

    4
    « Good location »

Located in ideal spot for exploring Stanley Park and walking along sea wall. Easy access to other areas of city on frequent buses. Room comfortable and no noise. Staff friendly, both in hotel and bar. Good value food, impressed that frequented mainly by locals. Having arrived jet lagged we were grateful for a stress free experience.

    5
« Still prefered above other choices »

Although there were a couple of issues around the shower that made it impossible for my partner to shower safely we still would not stay anywhere else far too many visits that were good to let one problem influence our choice.

    2
« In dire need of updating! »

Other than the location, there is no reason to pay the rates this property commands. The rooms have not been updated for at least 30-40 years. The A/C is awful, bathrooms are painfully inadequate - with poor ventilation. The direct area, park, eateries are good - the hotel, really really needs to be brought upto that level.

    5
    « Perfect Location »

This was our first time staying downtown Vancouver and the experience was fantastic! We were welcomed by a very professional young woman who was more than accommodating. The location is perfect, as it is close to the water and an assortment of amazing restaurants. We will definitely stay here again when visiting Vancouver!

    4
    « Very good »

Simple hotel, clean, helpful staff and Wifi works very well. The air conditioner could be better. The location is perfect - I could walk to most of great points in Vancouver in 20 min or less. I'd definitely stay there my next time in Vancouver

    4
« Tired but still worth trying »

We chose the hotel because of good reviews and were not disappointed. We were 3rd floor above the street and the buses standing waiting underneath, although electric or hybrid were quite noisy. It didn't help that the Windows were quite old and single glazed. The room was large enough with 2 queen beds and a writing desk with 2 chairs, although the bathroom was pretty compact. It appeared that some of the other rooms on our floor were being modernised and redecorated. Now for the good points. Location is excellent. English bay is lovely and has plenty of good eating and drinking places to choose from. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The bar/restaurant prices were very reasonable and the quality not too bad. It's about a 15 minute walk to most of the main sights but, as mentioned earlier, there are regular buses stopped right outside.

    5
    « Excellent location »

The hotel is ocated close to Stanley Park and the bay. It is surrounded by many different types of restaurants and cafes. The staff was very helpful and informative about local attractions. The day desk clerk (manager?) gave us information that stopped us from attempting to go to an unsuitable attraction and steered us to better alternatives. The hotel clean and mostly quiet. There was some renovation going on, but it did not affect our stay.

    2
« Needs serious updating, cramped parking, hazardous steps »

The property is only a block from the Seawall and English Bay beach. However, everything needs serious updating and upgrading. If the covered parking is full (it will be), or if you need a parking stall larger than a postage stamp, you will have to drive around to the larger parking lot. Then you'll have to walk down a flight of stairs and re-enter the hotel from the lobby. The elevators are old and require a room key to access them. When you get to your room, your bathroom door will likely stick (ours did) and there will be an odd cutout in the exterior wall below the window. The only things going for this place are the excellent location, and the relatively affordable price.

    « Great Stay »

The Best Western PLUS Sands was located in a great spot within walking distance of the bay, the park and good food. Originally booked as a place to rest before an Alaskan cruise, it turned into a wonderful vacation day thanks to the location and staff at the Best Western.

« O.K. for one night, perfect place between downtown and Stanley Park »

Not cheap but worth the money. The location is perfect. Close to downtown, close to Stanley Park. Rent a bike from across the street and you're gonna have fun exploring this wonderful city. Parking spaces are available for 16$ which is decent in a city like this compared to NY, Seattle or Boston. The hotel itself shouldn't be rated as a BestWestern Plus. It´s way less than that. I don't want to call it run-down but it´s also not in good condition. Something in between. Staff was nice, helpful and friendly. The room was mostly clean except for some long black hair on the duvet and in the bathroom. Wear shoes and you'll be fine. Don't think about the carpet which might "walk" out of the room by itself if it wasn't sticked to the floor. Gross. Bar was too loud to enjoy a drink. We didn´t try the breakfast but it looked like any of these overpriced american hotel breakfast. I recommend going downtown. There are lots of nice breakfast places, especially "Small Victory" at 1088 Homer Street.

We had a very nice stay in Vancouver ? We did not use the hotel facilities other than the room. In the room, there is a fridge, microwave and coffee maker - great touch. The room was clean especially the bathroom. The shower system needs some upgrade. The location of this hotel is perfect for visitors that like to walk everywhere or use the bus as a mean of transportation ? close to everything. « front desk staff cost our rating a star »

Likes: awesome location, exceptional cleanliness, comfortable bed, decent shower. Big TV if you have time to watch it. Dislikes: thin walls, street noise, tiny toilet (we hate tiny toilets). Guy who checked us in was super nice but screwed up three times. First, we asked him where the nearest Starbucks was and he directed us to one that was nearly half a mile up Davies Street. Turns out there was a Starbucks RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the hotel, in the opposite direction from where he directed us. Odd that he wouldn't know that. Then he sent us up with the hotel's records, which he was supposed to file but stuck in with our room keys instead. We found that out when we asked, the next day, if the hotel would be willing to let us charge an additional hundred dollars on our Discover card and give us cash. We explained that we had been the victim of a pickpocket and would very much appreciate their help, since we were in Canada and needed Canadian currency. They refused to help us, then sent us up to our room --twice-- to fetch them the papers the check-in guy had accidentally given us the day before. First we brought them one record, then they said, "Oh, he gave you another one too, can you bring us that?" So we did THEM favors, but they wouldn't do us any.

« Great bar and location »

Super close to Stanley Park and walking distance from restaurants and bars in the West End. The hotel bar was actually pretty great. I was here during the FIFA Women's World Cup so there were a lot of Americans visiting. The staff was very friendly and accommodated everyone there for the event. The rooms are a bit older, but they are kept clean and everything functions perfectly. Location is the best part of staying here. English bay is with in blocks and so is stanley park. Its hard to beat that in Vancouver! There is a fridge and microwave in the room and a large flatscreen TV. Good value and hotel for where it is located.

    « Ageing hotel »

This is an old tired hotel in need of renovation. The room was very small with two queen size beds crammed in. TV had lots of channels but not many you could actually watch. The reception staff were helpful with queries

    « Aging In A Gret Location »

This hotel is just steps away from Stanley Park, so I like to stay here during visits to Vancouver. Trouble is, the rooms really show their age and are sorely in need of an upgrade. The staff keeps them clean but it is an expensive place to stay given the level of quality (but all of Vancouver is expensive!) The two restaurants/lounges offer good food as well as a good drink. And you really should spend time in Stanley Park if you ever come visit Vancouver!

    « great location »

i stayed here with my two yong boys for 5 nights and the reception staff were very accomedating they knew i was traveling with young children and they gave me a room at the back which was large enough for us all and our luggage. location is fab right across from English Bay, during our stay the weather was amazing so most nights we sat at the beach as did most people and we were just a few yards away so never travelled far. The rooms were kept clean and tidy. only thing i have to saw about our rooms were the air conditioning unit wasnt great but given that we stayed in vancouver i very much doubt they get fab weather often so we would let that one be. we tried the food aswell but thats a bit to be desired i must say, however there are more than enougj choices to chose from right on your door step. we left for a weeks cruise and returned again for 1 night upon arriving our room was not ready so i asked for another room there was!! we are now placed in front of the hotel with a great view on the beach and again rooms are clean and tidy only down fall is the room is not as big as before however for 1 night its more than fine. would i return to the hotel??yes i would.. .

    « Amazing location »

Being a best western I expected a pretty basic hotel but was pleasantly surprised. The location was perfect right across from Sunset Beach and on the corner of two main west end roads, Davies Street and Denman Streets, perfect for food and drinks. It's also a very safe area, beautiful sunsets, great pubs including cheap fares. Defiantly a great location. Hotel rooms are clean and comfortable, comfortable beds and free wifi. $7 breakfast downstairs for guests.

    « Great Vancouver location »

This hotel is location just minutes from English Bay. The staff of the hotel are attentive to needs, familiar with the area and were very helpful. The room was spacious and although a little dated had everything we needed, including wi-fi, and TV. We would definately consider staying here again for a vacation in downtown Vancouver. Lots to do in town, and so many great restaurants. Watching the sunset on the beach was a real bonus, and just minutes from our room.

« Excellent location and value for money »

The location in English Bay and so close to Stanley Park was excellent. Bike rental across the road which we used on our last day to ride around beautiful Stanley Park. Beaches close by as well and lots of activity on the streets but not noisy in our room. Restaurants and grocery stores on Davie Street were abundant. Fantastic location for walking and C29 bus stop nearby which linked with other transport to Granville Island, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Grouse Mountain, cruise terminal and Gastown. The room was very comfortable as was the bed. Laundry facilites available. We felt 'at home' and can't fault any aspect of our stay - highly recommended.

    5
« Perfect location with friendly service »

The hotel is located near English Bay. We could walk out the door, cross the street to a wonderful beach walkway which you could either walk or get a great run into Stanley Park. There are lots of restaurants nearby and another short walk to a marina with more restaurants. Our room was adequate in size, bathrooms are small. Staff is very welcoming and helpful in giving directions and suggestions.

« great location, great staff »

This hotel is located near English Bay (we could see the ships in the Bay from our window)--great location. The rooms are a little tired, but pristinely clean. We enjoyed our breakfasts and lunches in the downstairs restaurant. But the best thing about this place is the staff. Always ready to help, and not just help, but go out of their way to be friendly while they are doing this!!

The only issue we had was the last night of our stay there was a brown liquid that leaked from the roof in our bathroom onto the towels, toilet floor. I will say that the front desk staff were quite quick in addressing this and we were moved to a "premium room" on the 5th floor. I use the term premium very loosely as it was not much different than the room we were in. We often found ourselves waiting extended periods of time for an elevator as there was frequently one of the two elevators out of service. The parking situation is also very small and if you have to park on the second floor, be prepared to drag your luggage down a set of stairs behind the hotel as there is no ramp. I don't think i would stay here again as the cons outweigh the pros.

« We would stay again. »

The sands was a great place to stay. The bed and room was comfortable. It was clean. The staff were very helpful. The restaurant had good food. My son loved their nachos and calamari. The location was fantastic. We rented bikes from a place across the street and cycled through Stanley park. Granville island is a 20 minute walk away and English Bay Beach is 5 minutes away. The aquarium is also close. We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our room. Our room faced Davie street which can be busy at night. If you're a light sleeper, a room facing away from the street would be better. We would stay at the sands again.

Great beds and pillows - very comfortable suite - restaurant had plenty of choice and lots of specials - good quality food - staff in both restaurant and lobby helpful. Our bed was not made on second night and tea bags not replaced - a supervisor should check the rooms after the maid service is finished. over the 3 nights - the soap dispenser is the ladies washroom was empty - reported it to the staff but never refilled

« Only good things to say »

The hotel is located handy to beach, busses, shops and restaurants in a trendy downtown area of central Vancouver. Conveniently located for access to central downtown, Stanley Park, and beach attractions. The staff were pleasant, helpful, efficient and knowledgeable about transport options, local places to visit, and restaurants. We can't fault this hotel.

Good hotel near English Bay and Stanley Park. Walking distance to many restaurants and Stanley Park. The staff here was very friendly and helpful. Room was ordinary with a street view. Clean and adequate. No free breakfast but restaurant and bar on site. Elevators were small. Price was right.

    « Staff is great »

The hotel doesn't look like much from the outside and indeed the rooms are a little tired, but are pristine, and the staff is outstanding. The Park restaurant serves great food and you can't beat the location. Great value.

« Between a rock and hard place...I mean the fitness center and the elevator... »

The location is amazing, the hotel not so much. I have to say the staff that we did interact with were very friendly and helpful (looking at you front desk people). We were given the room between the elevator and the fitness center. We actually didn't realize that the fitness center was directly next to our room until the next morning when someone was using it. I guess it was our responsibility to complain to the front desk about the people working out, by which I mean dropping weights directly on the floor repetitively at 10:30 pm and then again at 6:15 am. I had already called about the unsupervised groups children running and shouting through the hallways. This ended up being a class trip, which didn't seem to have chaperones. The hotel rooms are functional, but incredibly dated. We didn't mind that much, we didn't travel to Vancouver to sit in a hotel room. Secondly, be warned that there are heat surges when taking a shower. I wasn't a fan of the scalding water, although my partner thought it was hilarious until of course it happened to him! I did like the fact that the hotel gives vouchers for not utilizing the housekeeping service. I'm not entirely sure if we would spend the money and stay there again. Maybe if we got a room with a balcony....maybe.

« In need of TLC »

Location wise you can't beat this hotel. As someone who used to live in Vancouver I was well aware that this would be a noisier location. If you're looking for a quite, relaxing hotel this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a hotel that has great dining options all within a walking distance, access to public transportation directly in front of the hotel, and a direct access to English Bay then this is a great option. In terms of the hotel itself, it's very dated. The room was clean but as others have said there were some updates they could make to the rooms that would make them more guest friendly. Water pressure and temperature was inconsistent, the AC unit was very loud, and the room we were in got very warm in the mornings when the sun came up. Aside from that the staff that we interacted with were professional and courteous. We would stay again, but hopefully by then they will have undergone some renos.

Don't let the outside fool you this Hotel is perfect for anyone looking to stay close to awesome food, great scenery and nightlife. I was here for two nights on business and it is within walking distance of everything you need I ended up having more fun than I have had on actual vacations!

« Exceptionally clean but has problems »

Noise, comfort of bed, and air conditioning that didn't work made for a bad night in this old hotel. Staff are excellent and try to accommodate but the problems outweigh their abilities to correct them.

« Exterior doesn't do the inside justice »

My husband booked our room, and when we drove up to the hotel, I was wondering if it would be nice enough. It was more than nice -- it was wonderful. We had a room plus a kitchenette, and it was perfect. Clean, quiet and very well-located. We could walk to the beach, many restaurants and stores nearby.

« A very warm welcome from the staffs and had an extraordinary experience »

I am a travel agent from Mauritius. I suggested this hotel to my client. She stayed there recently, for approx. 1 week. She was very happy with the service she got there. The staffs were friendly, she had a great experience there. A big thanks to Conrad, who assisted me during this booking. I recommend other people to go there, as it is located in a very lovely city. Thank you once again.

« A mixed bag at Best Western Plus Sands »

The location is great, right near English bay and lots of restaurants along Davie and Denman Streets. The room was a decent size and the bed was comfortable. We were put on a "dog floor" and not told of this at check-in. The one evening the dog in the next room was left alone and barked for a few hours non stop. We had to call reception a few times to ask them to contact the owner and their response was "well, you're on a dog floor!" as it if we had requested that. Shower temperature was quite changeable and nearly got burned a few times when it suddenly went hot for a few seconds on and off. Overall a good room but they should definitely give people the option of not being on a dog floor when they do not have a dog with them.

    « Renovations urgently required »

On our travels we tend to favour the Best Western chain knowing that the properties are well maintained, the rooms are clean and everything is in working order. Not so with The Sands. Our room was very clean and all the amenities were laid out for us. Our room #520 on the top floor, did have a lovely partly obstructed view of English Bay, The wooden balcony is fast becoming rotten but still is okay to stand on or to sit on the chairs. The coffee pods were okay but the packets of Coffee Mate had been sitting for a very long time, so were not so fresh. The fridge did not work. Too many electrical cords for the octopus plug in to work and still did not when we disconnected everything else. No other plug ins for our computers without unplugging other electrical cords form lights or the TV. Then there is the bathroom; Very clean but we had a difficult time with the shower; the taps were on backwards, there was no pressure from the shower and if we turned on both hot and cold water and very cold it was, we would not get a decent temperature, either too hot or too cold. We had breakfast in the pub the last morning. The scrambled eggs were fine but the hash browns were not well cooked, cantaloupe slice was not ripe and no one, not one, around us and there were few, ate thier grapefruit slice. We thought that the place needed upgrading. On checking out, I mentioned some of these items to the staff and they said the hotel was in the process of being renovated and that the pub/restaurant had been done but it surely needs a lot more. We do enjoy the Best Western experience but this is one hotel we definitely will NOT be staying in again. The saving grace for The Sands is its location; English Bay, lots of good restaurants and close to Stanley Park..

My friend and I are currently staying here for six nights ( separate rooms ) and we are loving it. Check in is quick ( you can't pay with cash only on card ). There is a Tim Horton across the road as well as a health food shop. There is a Starbucks on the corner and a safe way one block away. There is also a McDonald's one block away and you are pretty much one street away from the beach. I have a view of the beach, but my friend doesn't :-) if you are staying in this hotel for more than a few days you can opt out of housekeeping and get a $10 voucher for each day to use at the restaurant. I went with this option and used it for room service breakfast each day. There is a Coke vending machine on each floor and a coffee machine in each room. My friend and I hired bikes from across the road and rode around Stanley park, gas town and yaletown. The ferry to Granville island is a 10-15 minute walk away ( along the beach ) which is a must do. We have watched the sunset on the beach each night. We were surprised at how many people are on the beach also watching the sunset. I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

Paid for parking that I could not use. Was denied a refund. Wallpaper peeling off the walls. Condensation dripping down the windows into our suitcases. Mystery smells in the hallway that would permeate into our room periodically.

« Great location, great hotel! »

We stayed 5 nights here using our Air Miles, during an Easter getaway. We chose this hotel because of is proximity to Stanley Park, numerous great restaurants and Granville Island. Our room faced away from the street, and was quite quiet (except for the occasional ambulance siren). Beds were comfy, complete with 4 pillows each and duvets. They provided a crib for our 21 month old son, which he happily slept in. The mini fridge was handy for in room snacks. We loved the black out curtains, they were great for toddler nap time. Free wifi, helpful staff, clean, comfortable and well-located. Couldn't ask for more! (Well, a pool would've been nice, but you can't have everything!)

    3
    « Nice but Lacking »

The rooms are clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel is showing its age and needs a few updates. The air conditioner units need to be upgraded so they are not so noisy, the windows are so thin all street noise comes in the room, and the water pressure and temperatures fluctuate way to much.

« Great Staff ,Hotel needs a few more improvements though.. »

We stayed here Easter Saturday night. You cannot beat the location at the English Bay end of Davie Street. The hotel is surrounded by everything you could need London Drugs, organic supermarket across road,a choice of coffee shops, liquor store,Denman Street around corner and public transit outside. Excellent staff on reception and very friendly and helpful housekeepers too whom we met the following Sunday. Newspaper in Halls near elevators are available in the morning .We woke up early for coffee and went to Starbucks as well as drinking the in room coffee. Can highly recommend a great cafe for brunch just up the street called the Red Umbrella. Check out is 12 so plenty of time to explore the area in the morning and walk to the beach which is just 5 minutes away.! At night I felt a bit cold and wished an extra blanket was in cupboard next time I would ask reception for one and the four pillows were a bit lumpy, not a firm as I prefer but the mattress was comfortable and sheets very clean. The small fridge is very noisy at night so we pulled out plug to silence it. Bathroom light ,as someone else here mentioned not adequate and needed to be a lot brighter for makeup application when getting ready to go out in the evening. A magnifying mirror would be handy too.! Water pressure for shower was excellent. When I lay down on the bed the pillows smelt a bit like mans aftershave and not my husbands as he didn't wear any until later!Im thinking as there were two beds ,only one was slept in before us as the other was just lounged on? Hotel walls are pretty thin too,we could hear the neighbours sometimes with a small dog and their children but it wasn't unbearable by any means. On top of the fridge you have a silver jug with a sign saying BCs water filter system has been upgraded and is some of the cleanest drinking water in the world, well that was good enough for us to know !so no need to buy any bottled ,and it tasted nice and stayed cold too in the jug provided. I really liked the dry sauna as well and the gym was small but fine. The Best Western plus Sands in Davie Street is good just not great ,but with a few more boosts it certainly could be as it has everything going for it.

Elevator noise started at 4 am.across the front door..I was give the different room for next 2 nights. « it gets better every visit »

This is my fourth visit to this hotel. Each time they have refurbished it and are currently doing so room by room. My room had a new bed. Very comfortable. I always try to get a room on the backside but this time there was a mixup and I ended up on the front side. The front side has a balcony but since it is on the street side it can be noisy. I ended up seeing only the neon sign and the opposite apartment towers. Higher floors have less noise from the street but also less water pressure. At night I put the fan on and it drowned out most of the noise. If you want a bit more luxury then try the premium floor (top floor). These rooms have bathrobes/slippers and extra amenities. these rooms actually have clotheslines (a very convenient feature). The hotel's location makes it very convenient if you like to walk in Stanley Park, go downtown or hike along the sea walk/wall. In addition, busses stop in front of the hotel so you can go anywhere without having to take a taxi. The staff is very helpful and friendly (including the housekeepers). the free wifi was a bit spotty. It would stop and switch to another company that required payment. So then you have to select Best Western's wifi again. After awhile this gets to be irritating if you rely on hotel wifi to do your work. I ended up seeing only the neon sign and the opposite apartment towers. Higher floors have less noise from the street but also less water pressure

I came 2 years ago to a different place and I left after 6 days thinking wow Vancouver is great but everything is far, yikes.... Being at this hotel has given another sensation of Vancouver, everything is close, the ocean is a 45 seconds away, nice restaurants to 10 min walking distance, we could be grabbing public transport right in front of the hotel, that is awesome! Rooms are not luxurious but good enough to sleep and hang out for a while, service at this place is great, and I have gotta say price wise VERY GOOD. Go for it.

We had a double queen bed unit here and were pleased with the size of the room and the amenities, including two different charging stations, a desk, two comfy chairs, blackout curtains, and other expected items. We will be back to this hotel.

« Good location, needs updating »

The location of this hotel in Vancouver is very good. Close to many activities and restaurants. However, it is an old hotel with single pane windows which provide little insulation from cold and noise. Street noise (voices) can be clearly heard. Heating vent is found behind the drapes making it difficult to warm the room. The room is very clean and bed comfortable.

This is a great little updated hotel from the 50s. It is clean and updated, but you can still feel that it has been around for years. The staff were what really stood out. I was truly impressed and we will definitely stay again just because they were so fair to deal with.

No major complaints... staff is excellent. Have been going to this hotel 3 times a year for many years, to visit family. My husband grumbles about his favourite dish, quinoa, changing every time he orders it. Bar fridge regulator wasnt working and froze our items, but was corrected immediately. Renos were being done, mattresses were being replaced in a few rooms, rewiring in the hallway. Upgrades happening. With all this, the noise level was at a minimum and the workers were very courteous. We enjoy the staff and feel very comfortable, it is our Vancouver community whilst visiting.

« Good value for money »

At first I was really uncertain about this hotel, because I read many bad reviews in Tripadvisor with complaints about too much street noise and lack of sleep. Still, I'd stay for 12 nights and the price was pretty reasonable when compared to many other places in Vancouver. I then decided to give it a try and I am glad I did it. We had a nice experience overall and I'll list below all the pros and cons of our 12-night stay: The pros - very friendly and courteous staff, cleanliness, spacious bedroom (we got one with two queen beds and still had enough room for our things), and quietness, we had no trouble sleeping. Of course, since I learned from other reviews that many rooms faced Davie street, which is a busy street with a bus stop right in front of the hotel, I asked the staff in advance to book me a room in the backside of the building. We got it (room 309), so it was pretty silent in terms of street noise. Another very important pro is the hotel's location. It's at the end of Davie street, one block from English bay beach. There were many coffee shops, groceries stores and restaurants in the area, everyday we chose a different place to eat. Also, as said before, there's a bus stop right in front of the building that could get us to downtown or Skytrain in 10 minutes. The cons - the shower was not really good. It'd suddenly become very hot or cold and we'd have to adjust the temperature all the time. Also, in our second night, our bathtub got clogged and there was this faint smell of sewage. We called front desk and requested for a room change and they right away gave us another room (also that faced the backside of the building). Another con is that there was one specific night that some neighbors were having some kind of a party in their room and since the walls are thin, we could hear their music and talking. It did not really disturbed our sleep and it happened only once, so I actually did not complain about it to the staff. Overall, we had a great experience at good value, so I gave it 4 stars.

« Weekend Getaway in Vancouver »

We stayed at the Best Western Plus Sands this weekend! This hotel has a great location with being very close to many good restaurants, pubs and also near Stanley Park. However, the rooms are very small and this is an older hotel where they are presently doing renovations. It was very noisy with renovations occurring and we could hear most conversations by other guests. There was a small mini-fridge in the room however, no bottle opener was provided. When my husband asked the reception for a bottle opener he said that we would have to take our bottles to the pub in the hotel to be opened. We felt that a bottle opener should be provided by the hotel. Overall, this was between poor - average hotel as this hotel has lots of room for improvement. If you are going to enjoy nearby restaurants and events then this is the perfect location but definitely not a luxurious hotel.

« Excellent affordable option in the best neighborhood »

This is still a basic urban hotel, but it's in a great location and has all the amenities, either in the hotel or very nearby. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Davie Street is the "Rainbow" village for Vancouver. So, lots of same sex couples holding hands on the street etc. Lots of interesting shops for every need. Dollar stores, coffee shops, many pubs and restaurants ( see my other review of The Capitol ). The wifi worked in both rooms we stayed in and they were in the process of adding many more antennas. We slept with the window slightly open and there was only a bit of street noise - not bad for busy urban location. We had snacks and breakfast in the hotel and was just fine. Good food, decent price, reflective of the hotel in general. the Parking is $13 CAD per night plus the city's notorious 27% tax on parking..oh well, the city is trying to be green but it's tough when you drive in from the country as we do!. The parking lot is pretty tight so a big truck might be a challenge ( forget RVs!).There is street parking which is free from 10 PM to 9 AM, but pretty expensive during the day 7 days a week. So try to leave the vehicle elsewhere and bring your best shoes. in 30 minutes you can walk to the arenas, downtown shopping, the sea wall, etc.

Booked this through Groupon but was not told there would be a $250 deposit at check in. However the front desk gal was very helpful and was able to make our stay great. We were able to walk down to English Bay and there are plenty of restaurants and convenience stores within walking distance. Wifi and breakfast was offered and the breakfast was great! Parking was no hassle at all as they include parking on site. Beds were comfy and rooms were clean. Definitely will consider this place for the future.

Good place to stay, very quiet place. There a lot of things to do nearby the hotel. There is a bike rental place in front of the Hotel where you can rent a bike and ride at Stanley Park or downtown Vancouver..

Nice, friendly, good service, good music good food - overall a pleasant evening out with friends. I had the grilled chicken and my husband had steak. Didn't much care for the soup. Funny but the desert serving was large.

« The only place in the village! »

We always stay here in Vancouver.....it's the most reasonable hotel in the area if your travelling with your dog. Very dog friendly, they give you a gift pkg. for your doggy. The rooms are spotless....the staff here are super friendly and the housekeepers are lovely. It's so central to walk everywhere....great restaurants abound, the restaurant in the hotel has changed....didn't look as friendly as before...rather more like a bar. Didn't try it. Stanley Park at your doorstep.....English Bay beach outside only a 1/4 of a block.....can't say enough about this great little place....our home away from home again.....staying here for decades now! Try it , can be noisy on the busy street side, but we enjoy the activity on the street......back lane much more quiet.....we are in the heart of the city.....expect city noises. It's fun.

What can I say about the Legendary Sand Best WesternVancouver ? I absolutely love the location... Great prices... Top floor rooms have a balcony over looking the ocean... Great room services for very affordable pricing... But for the location... for the few... cannot beat the pricing !!!

I requested a shaving kit and received something on par with what is handed out to the homeless or worse, a literally dangerously cheap disposable razor and shaving soap so old and useless that I could not shave.

Stayed for 2 nights while visiting from Ontario. Very happy with our stay. Our room (222) was spacious and clean. Beds were comfy. Bathroom had all the toiletries we needed. In room fridge and large water pitcher with ice machine on the first floor. In room coffee and tea. Spacious closet with 2 luggage stands. Nice view of ocean through a bay window. Perfect location....English bay Beach was lovely. Walked along the water every morning with numerous stores and restaurants steps away. Housekeeping staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Front desk was knowledgeable and patient. Parking was always available and super reasonable. Other than a strange occurance on our last day where the bathroom and front hallway had intermittent power (the light would go on and off), this is a great option for a no fuss accomodation.

« Great location and good value with some caveats »

If half-stars were possible, I'd rate this hotel 3.5 stars, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt since I slept very well and the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. If you're interested in learning more, you'll find considerable detail below. I booked this hotel based upon its location, which is very convenient to all of the West End plus English Bay and Stanley Park. Davie Street has an abundance of eateries, bars, shops, drug stores and a Safeway. The West End is great for walking and there is plenty of frequent and reliable bus service. Robson Street, noted for its shopping, is not far away. The available rooms included a King-bedded room on a 'premium floor' with 'upgraded amenities,' a balcony and a 'partial ocean view.' The AAA rate was reasonable so I booked it. In my reservation I added a request for a room in a quiet location, away from the elevators, ice machine and housekeeping storage. (In my experience being near those facilities can mean dealing with a lot of noise.) That request was honored and acknowledged by Reception staff when I checked in; my room was nowhere near those facilities. When I checked in on January 30th, I was warmly greeted by the Reception staff who were genuinely friendly and helpful. A few minutes later I was entering room 502, which was spacious and very clean. I noticed right away, though, that my view was entirely of the building across the street and the hotel's large neon sign. (Room 502 is at the east end of the hall on the south side of the building.) I checked out the balcony, which was the only place from which I could view any water and, of course, it was English Bay...not the 'ocean.' :) And to see the water I had to nearly lean over the balcony railing. I'm including some photos to illustrate this. Looking toward the other direction, 'up' Davie Street to the east, the view was dominated by the hotel's neon sign. Again, photos will tell that story. Back inside the room with the balcony door shut (it was quite chilly and rainy last weekend), it was quickly apparent how much street noise could be heard. What's more, the end of the line for bus routes 5 and 6 is just below, on both sides of Davie Street. With every bus's arrival I heard the beep-beep-beep of the kneeling mechanism, the loud whoosh of air brakes and occasionally a bus's very loud horn. I went down to Reception to see if another room might be available but, alas, the hotel was totally full. Again, the staff were very pleasant and they tried their best to accommodate me. Happily, I was staying only one night and I figured I could deal with most anything for a night. The room's furnishings were comfortable and in very good condition. And the bed was wonderful! When I returned to the hotel around 11:30 PM that night, most of the noise outside had died down and I slept very well. The bed and its linens were extremely comfortable. One oddity of the room: As the windows on the fifth floor are only single pane glass, there is precious little insulation from not only sound but the outside temperature. There is baseboard radiant heat underneath the entire width of the sliding door to the balcony and the adjacent windows, but it could do only so much despite the thermostat being set at its maximum temperature. There is a window-mounted air conditioner/heater, but unfortunately it would not produce any warm air because, being placed above the radiator, its own thermostat read into the 90s. Such a poor placement; I wonder who thought that was a good idea. (But it probably works well enough in the summer.) The bathroom was quite cramped but that's not important to me. I spent very little time in there, but I note it as some guests may want a more spacious bathroom. My only real complaint is the condition of the balcony and the eyesore that is the rusted, paint-flaking fixture that attaches the hotel's neon sign to the building. That needs to be addressed. And I take issue with Room 502, specifically, being considered as having anything 'premium' given that factor, the single-glazed windows and the view being nothing special. Oh - almost forgot - the in-room, free Wi-Fi was a joke in Room 502. It was barely existent with a connection being impossible most of the time. It wasn't an issue for me, though, as my T-Mobile plan comes with free global data roaming. But I note this for the benefit of other guests who may need to depend upon Wi-Fi when traveling. Wi-Fi in the lobby, at least, was excellent. In all, because the main reason I book a hotel is to sleep, and I slept quite well, plus the hotel's staff was great, I'm giving it four stars. If I stay here in the future, I know enough to book the opposite side of the hotel for the 'mountain view' (and that's a stretch from what I saw when a housekeeper allowed me to look inside one of those rooms as I was checking out of my room the next day), plus I'd book one of the lower floors that reviewer "Elisabeth V" noted as having double-glazed windows. Thank you for reading my review. Please look at my photos too. (I uploaded the photos in a certain order to coincide with the points made in my review, but TripAdvisor seems to reorder them when they are published.)

    « okay for price »

lovely service, great location, but road noise on 3rd and 4 th level is terrible due to single glazing. (2nd and 1 st floor have double glazing and are a lot better) Clean rooms and bathroom (bit small), beds fairly okay but pull out bed was fighting with the coffee table and the desk. Not much space when pull out bed is being used. Internet dropped out few times. Interior of rooms clean but bit daggy with 1960's wallpaper. Still for the location and price, not too bad. Suggestion ask for a room on 1 st or second level.

Front Desk staff provided excellent service at check-in and check-out. Very helpful when I needed to use the Internet to check in for my flight. Housekeeping staff were friendly and always said hello when passing in the hallway. Location is excellent with a Starbucks downstairs and a Tim Horton's across the street.

    « shocking.................. »

never never again , I took my family for a 3 month north American experience , and apart from a shocking hotel in new York then this was a very close second , to be fair the weekend front desk staff (blonde lady ) was amazing , and a younger gentleman (Asian I think) was again amazing , the problems start with the bar ? , on arrival (with my 9 year old son and my wife ) we checked in no problem ......trvelling across Canada we where hungry and tired and wanted to just eat and stay in the hotel , we spoke to the lady at the welcome counter to the restaurant and bar and she told us there was a waiting time of around 20 minutes , we waited......after 40 minutes I went to speak to her and she told me that they had dropped liquid on the floor so the table earmarked for us was no longer available and they had no staff to clean up ......disguising the fact that I had seen many people walking in from the other entrance on the road and from the waiting area . that was the excuse ..........., so obviously we had to leave the hotel and find somewhere to eat , the next evening ........without notice , and even myself didn't give it a thought , the room started shaking ...........no , not an earthquake ......a karaoke party right beneath our room , kettles , cups and allsorts where shaking and vibrating , a real nightmare , my son could not sleep so I called the front desk to be confronted with a " what do you expect me to do ?" attitude , this carried on until 2 30 am , when I spoke to the front desk the next morning the lady explained that it was a common complaint on the weekend , my question was why the hell did they put a young family in a room directly over a bar with that racket on til the early hours , and it is a problem they are aware of ? very disappointed with the whole thing apart from the forementioned 2 menmbers of staff , as a hotelier myself it just wasn't up to best westerns standards and has put me completely off the brand

« Nice, Affordable Anniversary Getaway »

We just enjoyed our second visit to this well located, classic hotel right near English Bay. This time, we escaped the rest of the family gathered for Christmas to have a quiet night at a reliably nice, well appointed hotel. We weren't disappointed. The king beds are so comfortable and huge it's like sleeping on a cloud. We also really enjoyed breakfast at the Red Umbrella restaurant, just a few doors up the street (go left) on the same side. Delicious food, great coffee, and excellent service (we had already tried the restaurant in the hotel but it was just average). We'll be back!

    « Vancouver Holiday »

Room adequate and bed comfortable. We were on the street side this time (previous stay was on the other side) and so was noisy. Also there was a group partying in the hallway at 3 in the morning on New Years Day (they didn't even stay in their room). They moved back to their room when we asked them but continued to make a lot of noise in their room until 5am at which time someone else knocked on their door and asked them to stop. It is OK to have a party at New Year but this was over the top. At check out the staff didn't seem overly concerned.

« Winter Holiday in Vancouver »

We spent three weeks in Vancouver in total and chose this hotel because it was just down the road from where our son lived. We stayed at this hotel at three different times going on trips in between. This was our last stay and we chose a king room this time (we had stayed in a Queen room the other two times). This room was much better than our previous stay, it was quieter as it was not on the street and it was a larger room. staff good.

« Good amenities, but we had the worst room. »

Free wifi, complementary bath robes, hair dryer, lots of coffee, lots of toiletries and a reasonable price, however, we had the room next to the ice machine, literally our door was immediately up against the ice machine front so when people came to get ice in the wee hours we heard it, and heard the machine struggle and whir making more ice, I would recommend here for an inexpensive stay with everything you need but this room was pretty bad so if we were staying more than one night we'd have asked for a room change.

My husband and I visited Vancouver at the end of August 2015. Best Western, you are in a great location. We could walk for kilometres to reach our destinations. We could see the beautiful English Bay from our hotel room, and walk a block to English Bay to have coffee every morning. Location was fantastic! All staff were pleasant and welcoming. Our room was clean. We will be back to stay. Thank you.

Stayed here for three days and it all went great. Amazing and friendly staff. Nice location at the end of Davie and Denman, close to waterfront, public transit. Thank you for making our stay memorable.

« OK, near some fun attractions. »

This hotel is a bit rundown and rooms are small. The ceiling vent in the small bathroom didn't work, so with 4 people using the bathroom, it got a bit "odorous and humid". Great location to visit Stanley Park, but a long walk to the center of town. Great for exploring the West End, though. Wifi comes free, but VERY slow and almost not worth even trying to use. Also, one elevator out of service, so long waits for the only one working.

Hotel is great location for water and park access. Rooms are small , but well done. You must pay extra for parking. a bit of a walk to shopping. A minimum of 200 characters for this is stuipid and a waste of my valuable time

Our second trip to Vancouver for a quick weekend of shopping. Good location - good value. Will stay again! Right across from English Bay - easy to enjoy a morning walk along the seawall. Good selection of restaurants and shops within walking distance.

« Great hotel with restrictions »

The hotel is strange looking from the outside, but it's so close to the beach, Stanley Park and located near so many restaurant options that it's worth it. A big plus is the size of the room and closet. The only problem I found annoying was that the wifi was slow and almost non-functional and the coin laundry machines avaible were out of order.

    3
« Nice location, great staff but very noisy »

This is a nice property with a friendly and helpful staff. However there is a night club on the low level of the building. We were on the equivalent of the 3rd floor and still couldn't sleep until after the club closed. The loud music, and people on the street made for a long night short on sleep.

« Do not expect good food here »

I have stayed at this hotel recently. Noisy. Comfortable bed.Clean.The food is another story. My partner and I have tried several times for breakfast, lunch and dinner or just appetizers. The Hotel needs someone who cares about quality. The bar staff have one good server so far. The front desk staff are very friendly and proficient. The drink specials are a good draw but the food is below parr. Not fresh and tasteless.

    « Location can't be beat »

This hotel meets all your needs. Comfy, clean and friendly. Plus you are right on the water beside Stanley park. My husband and I stayed there with our 5 month old son and were 100% comfortable! We walked the sea wall every day, and could go shopping or out for meals without the car! I've visited Vancouver several times but from now on, I'm always staying here. If you're looking for luxury or romance, maybe not your place but I definitely got more than I bargained for!

« Hotel in a great location and a green ethic »

Our stay was comfortable in a duoble room with more than the usual space, furniture and amenities. Staff was efficient and friendly. We especially liked the extra conscious effort this Best Western is making in providing a recycling program that includes organic/bio collecting. The additional cost of $1.00 is a token only and an insignificant amount to help reduce the environmetal footprint of the travelling public. We fully support yhese efforts.

    « Great location »

This West End hotel is just steps from Stanley Park and the Seawall, within a block of good restaurants, on a transit line and we had a small view of the water from our bay window. On the downside, we needed to call room service to clean out the refrigerator and provide shampoo and soap, although it was done almost immediately and the cleaning lady brought us a teapot, tea and milk in apology. The only real complaint we had was the room was overly warm and couldn't be cooled down more than 4 degrees which left it overly warm for sleeping. Luckily we could open a window, which helped. Great service throughout the hotel, Paid parking but has in and out services. The location is the best.

    2
« Great location but poor hotel »

This is a great location - very close to Stanley Park, the seawall and steps from English Bay. However, the hotel itself was a real disappointment. Our bed was comfortable but we could hear pretty much everything in the room next door (not adjoining) to the point that it woke us up at night. Additionally, the bathroom was not cleaned well with several long dark hairs visible on the floors and towels. For these reasons we wouldn't book another night in this property and wouldn't recommend it to family or friends.

« Best deal if you want affordable and decent downtown »

Stayed there 6 nights in Oct2015, on a leisure trip on my own Let's go through the goods and bads/room for improvments that justify my rating. Why do you want to go there: *Location: downtown, a short walk to Stanley Park and literally a couple of blocks to the beach. I used public transportation just a couple of times otherwise walked pretty much everywhere, best way to discover the city. Hotel is on the quieter side of downtown. Multiple supermarkets/convenient stores are just around the corner-. *Room: Excellent deal. Room was large with 2 double beds. Clean with iron & its board, kettle and some tea. Wifi in the room and within the hotel premises is free of charge. *Facilities: Gym with decent amenities on the 1rst floor. Great to stay in shape. With north american food all day, one needs it. *Staff: Thumbs up, everyone very helpful and efficient, ready to print out tickets/boarding passes. Room for improvement: * Hotel is not the most modern one. However considering the deal I had. 5 stars are fully in line. *Tipp: go green meaning each time you do not use the housekeeping you get a 10CAN voucher to be used at the connected bar/restaurant. The salmonw rice and the quinoa thai bowl are worth a try !

« Great hotel, just not for sleeping »

The hotel is located in a great part of Vancouver, has easy access to the beach, Stanley Park, Downtown & all the major public transport routes. The Bayside pub serves great food & drink and the staff are friendly. The hotel is well appointed and the desk staff knew the area and were helpful. The reason this hotel gets 2 instead of 5 rating is because sadly the main purpose of a hotel is for sleeping. I didn't get a decent night's sleep throughout. The room was stiflingly hot because the thermostat was faulty. Once reported it was quickly replaced but didn't help, it stayed at 71 degrees. There was air con which was unfortunately linked to the thermostat. There was also a window but with the main bus route right outside it was really way to noisy to have it open. A real shame the lack of sleep has let down an otherwise very good hotel.

    2
    « Tough call »

In a great area in general, but the near nonstop noise of a Friday and Saturday night takes the luster off the location. Yes, you hear the bus stop...it is under the windows. People noise from outside is also very frequent and loud. Room 428 had a leaking bathtub faucet, and the tub will not hold water if you wanted a bath. There is paint peeling on the ceiling in the bathroom beside a makeshift patch. If the hotel is full, parking can be a challenge. Staff was friendly and efficient. View of the bay is quite nice. Would I stay there again? No

The room was very comfortable and clean. I liked the options of waiving the housekeeping for a day and receiving a $10 coupon for the lounge. It was a half hour walk from my Conference, and I enjoyed the walk. The price was more reasonable than hotels closer to the conference. In 2012 I stayed at this hotel when attending a conference, and chose to stay there again.

    « Pleasantly Satisfied »

We had a room on the top floor on the end. It was very quiet and we had a great night's sleep, the comfy bed helped as well. I expected it to be a little more worn than it was ,mostly because the outside has never been that appealing and also with the price being so reasonable for the west end. Have absolutely no complaints..it's clean, comfortable and the furniture was in good shape in our room anyways. Our room did have an adjoining door to the next room and admittedly we could hear them talking and later music. We just turned on our tv on a bit and problem solved. Location and parking fee can not be beat. $15 unheard of in the city. Our stay was very pleasant and the staff were super friendly and helpful. We have stayed in several hotels in Vancouver, taking in consideration the price, location, parking, room condition and cleanliness ..this hotel is a fantastic place to stay and without spending a fortune. Will stay again without hesitation. A couple of notes...no in-room safe....hotel has strict no smoking policy but has a convenient covered area just off to the side of front door.

    « Great location, clean & comfortable »

Room was nicely updated, very comfortable beds, which is needed after walking around Vancouver for the day. Location is excellent, close to Stanley Park, across from the beach at English Bay, beautiful views from our balcony on Davis St. Hotel is just far enough away from the center of downtown, but the bus picks you up just outside and a few minute ride, or a 15 min walk. I would stay here again when I return, great value for the money.. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful, which made the trip much more enjoyable to be able to get ideas and directions on where to go.

« Thin walls and people partying really took away from previous experiences. »

Our stay was a repeat visit and in the past we had very nice experiences here. As ever, one of our favourite locations in the West End. But this time the people partying on our floor (in the hallway, LOUD like they owned the place, and the reek of pot so strong you have trouble breathing in your own room -- and that is not hyperbole) really took away from what was expected to be a nice Vancouver getaway. Of course the hotel personnel can not pick their clients but a recommendation would be to bring earplugs and stay in a room which is not situated facing the Davie Street main drag.

Vancouver is a special place and Stanley Park area is great for outdoor adventure, walking, biking, skateboarding... I love all the shops and eateries in the area. But i feel the hotel takes advantage of this. Prices moderately but i used a half bottle of Febreze on the room the day before my sweetheart showed up to get the moldy smell out of the room. « A bit unimpressed »

My colleague and I are staying here for business for two nights. Although I usually don't leave reviews, I thought that I should for this so that hotel management can see. My colleague was originally given a room that was in between the elevators and the fitness centre, backing onto the back stairwell. When he got to the room, we went downstairs to ask for him to switch (as he already has sleeping issues and has been placed near elevators before with poor results). He was told that there were no other rooms in the price category that we paid and so he would have to stick with the room he had. Later that evening, he had difficulties sleeping and called downstairs to ask if there were any other rooms available. He was told that there weren't. After a while, he phoned back to express his upset (we were dealing with a time change as well as an early presentation the next day) with the constant noise from the elevators. Eventually, after him saying that if he had to stay in the room, he would have to cancel the next night's reservation - another room was found for him. I wonder why his request wasn't taken seriously enough to find another room until he was planning on cancelling his next night reservation. The following day, we were told that there were a block of rooms that had experienced water damage from the storm. Understandable. Unfortunately, the carpet and walls in front of my room have been soaked to the point that the hallway is smelling. I let the front desk know and asked if a fan could be placed there to dry the floor and dissipate the smell (as I had seen a powerful floor drying fan the previous evening drying out another area). When I returned from dinner, the carpet in the hallway's puddle had spread to the doorframe of my room, with the smell seeping into my room. When I called down to let the front desk know, I was told that they were aware of the situation but couldn't do anything until maintenance came the next day at 7 am. While I understand that there's not much that can be done in these situations, I don't think that a fan would be out of the question. I was letting them know as a courtesy as well as the problem that the smell was beginning to get into my room. I would have expected some sort of apology or problem solving from the staff - even putting towels out to seep up the puddle? Besides all of these issues from water damage, the hotel is fine. Great location, awesome restaurant/bar attached with amazing servers. Unfortunately, I didn't get the sense that the front desk staff were committed to customer service and hospitality. Although I have no experience in the hotel industry, I would have offered my apologies even if there was nothing that I could do/things were out of my control. A little bit goes a long way.

« Our favourite hotel when staying in Vancouver »

Dog Friendly and right by Stanley Park for walkies, this little hotel checks all our boxes. The rooms are small but cozy. A little fridge for snacks, friendly and helpful staff who remember us between visits. Secure parking. Park your car and take a bus to any attractions - this hotel is right on the bus lines. Most front rooms have a view of English Bay. The on site restaurant is very good. The beds are comfortable. We have been here before and will definitely come back. The room prices in off season are very reasonable for a nice hotel in downtown Vancouver. very good value -

    « Great Location - great Bar »

If you want to be in the middle of evrething, this is the place. Great value, great view, nice service. Rooms are small and a little old fashion, but clean. You can have a drink at the bar, sing karaoke, or watch a game every night.

« Best Hotel in the City! »

I was recently in town with a friend to take in the Flyer's vs Canuck's hockey game. The room was modern, clean and the hotel had all the amenities needed. It is just steps from an amazing beach, Stanley Park and many great restaurants. I really want to thank Eddy, Dallas and Scott for taking such good care of us during our visit to Vancouver! This is my go to hotel when I am in the lower mainland!

« Great location, helpful staff »

Clean, spacious room, comfortable beds, mostly quiet (except for Halloween firecrackers and partiers in the streets), Very friendly and helpful staff. Good location to access city activities. We did not eat at the restaurant, so can't comment.

« Great location, friendly staff »

Lovely hotel in a good location. Reception staff were very helpful. It located beside the bay and Stanley park is a short walk away. Windows facing Davie Street are very thin and so you can hear all the street noises from below however, the rooms are extremely clean and beds are very comfortable. I would recommend hiring out Bikes (rental shop across the road from hotel) and cycle around Stanley park and English Bay. Tim Hortons also located beside the Bike shop and Starbucks are only a few doors down also. Don't go home without trying Breakfast at the Red Umbrella Cafe yum!

    « Great Service »

I stayed one night at the Sands. My stay was made enjoyable right at the start with the excellent staff that checked me in. They gladly answered any questions I had and were in a smiley happy mood. I stated I hoped the mattress was ok because of a sore back. The next morning the clerk asked me how was my mattress. I assured her it was great. I met the cleaning ladies in the elevator. They too were very friendly. I am going to be in Vancouver in early December and I will stay at the Sands again.

The hotel is a bit older but is well maintained. It's steps drom the seawall and shops. Easy to walk anywhere and on a bus line. My room was clean and a good size. The bed was really comfortable! Nice friendly staff. Will definitely stay again.

this hotel on davie street has affordable room rates. rooms are a little bit old, bathroom is mini but the location is good. you can walk to the nearby beach or to the city centre. very good bar, parking $ 13, wlan, if you stay for some days and want no housekeeping you get a $ 10 voucher per day continental breakfast is $ 6.49 and that is ok

« Great Location, Funny Smell in Room »

The location was great but the hotel needs a refit/renovation. Furniture too large for the room (219) Shower tiles are circa 1970 and there was an odd odour in the room. It might have been the cleaning fluids but it was quite distracting. Urine on toilet seat at check-in and the coverlet was soiled. The staff were friendly and compensated with free food/drinks vouchers.

« Great stay, as always!! »

My husband & I (& our dog) have stayed here a few times. The hotel is clean & comfortable, the staff are lovely & you cannot beat the location! Right on the edge of English Bay for beautiful morning walks on the sea-wall or the beaches. Close to shopping, both boutique & Pacific Center Mall, Starbucks, grocery stores, London Drugs, pet stores, bicycle rentals, you name, you've got it. All within minutes... oh yes, & more restaurants than you can imagine!! We got an excellent deal with breakfast included, parking included & dog stay included, & we highly recommend this hotel & will definitely be back.

    « Nice and comfortable »

Excellent customer service, easy to find from train stations and buses (stops) are right across the street. Hotel is located in an area that is so convenient to resturants (at least 25 within a block), pubs, shopping and Hop on Hop off routes. It's also a block away from the Sea Wall and 10 min walk to the Ferry to get you over to Granville Island. This hotel is perfect for every tourist attraction, most are located less than 10 to 15 min. walk or a bus stop. I found the hotel to be very clean and comfortable. Noise level was very low and the resturant was reasonable and delicious. I highly recommend this hotel.

    « Good Stay »

Good value at the BCAA price for Vancouver. Would be great if a continental breakfast was included. Room was clean. The only issues was that the bathtub didn't drain as fast as the shower being used and the room temperature wasn't adjustable without using the a/c or opening a window.

« Top downtown west end location and very comfortable hotel »

Literally steps to English Bay beaches and lively Denman street (more restaurants than any other place in the city) this very comfortable property is great for someone who wants the excitement of downtown with spectacular scenery nearby. Excellent staff service who anticipate needs; easy onsite parking and full service restaurant. A great downtown location without the cost.

Have read several of the recent reviews and cannot understand where the negativity comes from.We were booked in by a travel company and upon arrival the reception staff had our details and room allocation sorted out in quick time and with a very very pleasant manner.Rooms were fine and we dined at breakfast and in the evening, both of which were very good meals.Excellent location for beach/sea and Stanley Park and within close proximity to bars/restaurants and shops. « Great tourist digs »

This is a great place in Vancouver's West End for tourists -- one block from English Bay and the Stanley Park Sea Wall walk. You are in fact just a couple walking blocks to the park, or a slightly longer walk or short drive to the main entrance. Just around the corner is Denman Ave with lots of places to eat, and if you walk all the 6 block to Robson St, even more great places to eat.

    « Surprisingly good 3 star hotel »

The location is absolutely perfect - it's about 75 feet from the beach. From my window over Davie street, I can lean out and take a beautiful photograph of the sea, the ships anchored a kilometre or two out and the misty blue background of Vancouver Island in the far distance. Amazing. It's also on the "high" street of a very densely populated residential area. This means that there are lots of grocery stores, pharmacists and inexpensive and tasty restaurants that are favourites of the locals. There's also some great little coffee shops and ice cream places when you turn the corner onto Denman street. Denman still gives you a hint of sleepy old Vancouver (pre-Expo 86 days). Lots of tiny, relatively cheap, stores and restaurants patronized by the thousands of apartment dwellers in the streets behind them. As others will have noted, you are 30 seconds away from the Sea Wall. Turn right and you head along the beach and into Stanley Park. You can enjoy a good run or walk of several kilometres around it with some fabulous ocean and mountain views. Turn left and in about a kilometre you will come to the dock for the little water buses that go to Yaletown, Granville Island and Kits beach area. They are privately owned, so any bus pass you have won't work on them. But they take cash and will sell you tickets for more trips if you want. Now for the hotel: Rooms seem big (because I've been visiting New York a lot), they are very clean, no weird smells and I liked the fridge (which was quite cold), as I bought some yogurt and granola at the health food store right across the street, plus some fruit and I've had breakfasts for a few days at next to nothing. Good little coffee maker with a system that gives you hot water for tea that Doesn't taste like coffee, as some systems do. The toiletries are nicer than expected, too. I booked the hotel because of the combination of location and price for a five day stay. I will definitely book again, in part because of these factors, but also because the staff is very helpful, the Wi-Fi is good (I telecommuted for 7.5 hours every day and worked online in big documents) except in the evening when I think every guest in the hotel was probably online and watching Netflix! I asked for a room on Davie street, but it might be kind of noisy for some (I always sleep with ear plugs, so not an issue). You can ask for a room facing the alley and it's much quieter. Next time the hotel upgrades, I'd suggest they invest in better mattresses. These are a bit too springy, but not so much that they interfered with my sleep. Overall, I'd say this is a great value for the money and that, as long as you don't want a ritzy, glam hotel, you will be very happy you stayed here.

« Nice Hotel, Awful Wifi »

This a cute hotel in a great location. The room, amenities and staff are all very nice. What gets the Sands only a three star review is their wifi. Normally wifi wouldn't be a huge issue, but when you are depending on it to use FaceTime or Skype so Verizon won't charge you a fortune on international roaming, it is kind of important. The wifi at the hotel is so bad that they probably shouldn't advertise that they have it. Wifi drops every few minutes, requiring you to log in again and again and again, very frustrating.

Nice hotel near Stanley Park. Nothing sophisticated. Decent breakfast. Good beds. Rooms not too spacious, Try getting a room at the back, which is much quieter. Bike rental and Tim Hortons are opposite.

« Best Western Sands in Vancouver »

We stay here 3 times a year for a week each stay. The only complaint that we had when we first appeared at this hotel many years ago, was the noise on Davie Street. We now request a room at the back of the hotel. The fitness room has equipment that is a little outdated, but heh... it works :D. I would give this hotel a gold star, the staff is super friendly and we keep coming back....

« Good room in a great location »

I really enjoyed my stay here. Nice, clean, quite, large rooms with decent wifi. My room was facing out over Davie St and had a partial view of the bay. The hotel was quite, staff was very helpful and friendly, and the rooms were updated and comfortable. Location can't be beat! I loved being so close to English Bay and Stanley Park. The hotel is a little far from the action of downtown, but I think you can hop on a bus easily. I walked everywhere, but next time I plan on looking into the bus options to make getting around a little easier, and faster. The only down side I would say is breakfast wasn't included, but there is a restaurant attached and there is also a Tim Hortons across the street. Next time I an in Vancouver I will definitely look at staying here again!

« Disappointing in Davie Street »

In a favourable position, near Stanley Park and English Bay Beach, this hotel is a little tired. The reastaurant/breakfast area is dull and lacks atmosphere, though the food is ok. Staff are quite casual, no uniform. TV's all over the room on different channels. Hotel has bar just down the street over looking the beach but this is abit of a dive. Two very slow lifts, small bathroom and tired fititng. Felt swamped with large tour party who had priority at breakfast. Trams and buses stop right ouside but despite first floor street side room, wasn't disturbed.

Parking, although covered was convenient but didn't expect to have to pay extra on top of the hotel tarrif.

« This hotel is a nightclub, beware if you like to sleep! »

We stayed here last weekend on a Saturday night before we left on a cruise. We stayed in room 224, directly above the doorway to the hotel. We ate a fabulous dinner in their restaurant and retired early so we could get a head-start on our cruise the following day. Myself and my sister, as well as my young daughter and teenage niece, went to sleep at about 9:30pm, but a couple of hours later, my sister and I awoke to a vibrating floor from the heavy bass of the nightclub below us and the constant stream of chatty partying club-goers who were well-lubricated with alcohol. I like to party as much as the next gal, but I also like to sleep when it's time, so hotel rooms should be quiet and nightclubs should be rowdy, but never the two should mix. Obviously, I'm not going to expect the nightclubbers to shut up. But I DO expect a hotel to be fully aware that they are placing guests above a room that is unacceptably loud once their nightclub opens. We did call to the front desk to complain, and they offered to move us to another room, but a) the 2 minor children were still asleep and b) if we moved, we couldn't be sure that room would be any better, and then we would have woken the kids who might not now get back to sleep. The front desk did not have earplugs, but I at least had one pair. They were totally ineffective, though; you can't earplug away vibrating bass. We did not return to sleep until well after 3am, following the close of the club and then the slow drain of the nightclubbers from the front of the building. In the morning, when we went to the front desk to speak with the manager, we were offered a 20% discount on our room. I'm still unsatisfied with their paltry "resolution" of the situation. I frankly regard their offer as evidence that they are completely unconcerned that they had sold a room that is tenuous for sleeping on weekend nights when their own nightclub is rowdiest. Management should understand putting a guest in that room is a disservice to their customer, and I can only surmise that management knows full well that this particular room is trouble, but sells it anyway to take a chance on making money versus the customer's restful well-being. That kind of practice makes me not want to return to this establishment.

« Great Place to Stay Following a Cruise »

This hotel provided me an excellent overnight stay following a cruise with friends. I took an afternoon nap in the room following the cruise, and it was quiet and peaceful! The room seemed large and was very clean. The following day I explored this lively area. It was wonderful only having to walk a couple of blocks to access the paved trail along the English Bay, near Stanley Park. This was a very safe place to walk alone. There was an artist doing a wood carving along the trail and several locals jogging. There was also a clean restroom along the trail, but not for a mile or so from where I started. The nearby restaurant and bar we visted were both very welcoming. There were convenient computers and a printer available for boarding passes in the lobby. This was a very nice stay, in a very lively, interesting part of town! I highly recommend it.

    « Very enjoyable stay »

I chose a room facing away from Davie Street, preferring the quite to the "view" from the street side. The king bed and pillows were perfect for us. The area has improved significantly since I last visited and wanting to be within walking distance to Stanley park, this seemed to be a reasonably priced hotel. I always read the worst reviews to have an idea of what to expect and was very happy not to have experienced anything negative. The hotel staff were very friendly. The hotel has some "charm" and provided parking. The room was clean and fresh. Overall a very good experience.
