    « FAMILY GET AWAY »

We decided on a last minute trip to Venice Beach to celebrate our daughters birthday. We had no plans, no reservations, nothing. Got here and spent the day doing what you do at the beach when I finally decided to call around for a room. Spoke to a couple of places and the BW was by far the best deal for the closest location to us. When we arrived, I saw it looked very small but was a very quiet location. I noiticed the IHOP right away. Parking was safe and underground. Checked in and the girl was very helpful, was joking with us and ever told us about some site we could see while we were there. Got to our room (the worst part of this was finding our room) and the room was very nice! We got the 2 queen beds that were very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the room was beautiful. I was very happy with our experience with them and I will be staying at another BW soon!

    « Great Value! »

Super cute room with a beach theme. Love the solid surface flooring-no gross carpet!! Great value! $179/night with free parking. Cannot beat that price! Not within walking distance to beach-but only a quick drive.

« Beautiful Hotel and Reasonable Prices for the Area »

Only about a mile or so from the Santa Monica Pier, this is a fantastic place to spend the night. What I loved was the room had laminate wood flooring and plantation shutters NO CARPETS OR CURTAINS. Very environmentally friendly. Best price I could find for this area. Friendly staff and free underground parking. It is within a mile or so of the Santa Monica pier so the price is well worth the short drive. Would definitely stay here again. One thing I would avoid is the IHOP next door for breakfast, it was pretty bad as the food, in my opinion, was mediocre.

« This hotel is great »

Clean an nice rooms without carpets. Nice and quiet at night. Free parking underground. Easy bus ride to the beach. Nice and service minded staff. We stayed here for three nights, and it served as home base for us exploring Santa Monica beach, Venice beach and Hollywood (by car). Highly recommended.

« good hotel, friendly staff, very convenient location and parking »

Best Western Santa Monica was our last stopping point following our route 1 pacific coast highway adventure, and we were not disappointed. The room was big, spacious clean and had inviting decor. The bathroom was spacious and all facilities well maintained. Hotel staff were very friendly, warm, inviting and helped us on a number of occasions during our stay. The hotel is conveniently located and LA's attractions are all within driving distance (particularly close is the world famous Santa Monica pier!). One piece of advice, restaurants which are close by are within driving distance rather than walking distance. This was OK for us as we hired a car, but just something to be mindful of. Parking is free for hotel guests, which was very helpful for us as we didn't have to worry about finding parking. One small thing... the air conditioning unit was quite loud and noisy but we got used to it after a few hours! This would not be enough to put us off staying here again in the future!

« Modern interior and convenient underground parking »

Great place and convenient location. The interior was modern and they provided a coupon for IHOP next door. One small issue with A/C was fixed quickly and to our satisfaction. It was close to many attractions.

    « Superb value in a sought-after location »

This hotel is very well located in Santa Monica, close to shops and restaurants, including the popular mall. The rooms are a good size, very comfortable, and cheerfully decorated. The price beats any lodging in the area, and it's easy to get to from other destinations in Santa Monica, if you want to focus your trip there, or elsewhere, if you are hitting a variety of sights in the greater LA area. Staff is friendly, welcoming and helpful, and rooms are spotless. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but it is just steps from an IHOP, and they offer discount coupons for lodgers, so you can grab a hearty breakfast or a quick meal quite easily, though there are also many excellent restaurants within a few minutes' walk.

« A superb hotel, great location with good facilities »

We stayed at the Santa Monica Best Western Plus Gateway Hotel for the last night of our Route 66 adventure. The hotel was only a stone's throw from the finishing point, and very easily found just off Santa Monica Boulevard. It had a huge underground parking area, on two levels. The hotel was modern and clean, with good facilities. Our room, 209, was very tidy with a nice feel. The view wasn't spectacular but this is a bustling city hotel. We didn't eat in the IHOP, but walked a few blocks over to Starbuck's. This was a great place to end our journey, and only a short ten-minute trip to LAX.

    « Very family friendly »

Very impressed with our stay here. The rooms were very nice and clean. We had a suite and it was very accommodating for our needs. What I liked best was it was very family friendly. When we called for a pack and play it was delivered immediately unlike other hotels we have stayed in. We never got dirty looks from employees because we had two young children with us or annoyance when we asked for something (i.e. the pack n' play). Everyone was always very polite and accommodating. The valet always had our car ready to go and were always very friendly. Although the buffet was very expensive we chose to eat there due to convenience and they were always nice and accommodating. We used the pool quite a bit and it was always well maintained and had plenty of towels. Also just the convenience of location was great as you could walk to the beach or the pier. Overall enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone with young children.

« Friendly, Clean and Good Value »

We stayed here for 6 nights, as a combination of business and vacation. The staff are excellent - polite, friendly and very welcoming. The room we had was spacious and bright, with possibly the most comfortable bed. Ihop is great for breakfast but for any other meal, you need to walk a fair distance or travel the 20 blocks or so into Santa Monica proper.

« A good valued for money hotel in Santa Monica »

Firstly, I don't quite understand the fair share of negative reviews here - I mean, are these trolls? We arrived to Santa Monica after staying in DTLA for two days, and since it is considered a nicer/safer neighbourhood, we booked four nights here. Yes, it is quite a distance away but Uber only cost us avg $6 and it only takes us 10 mins max. My clever mom found a bus ride that cost $1.20 and takes her on a leisure ride into the pier. Pros: - Spacious, clean bright rooms. Well-maintained with nice housekeeping staffs. - Amazing toilet - I'm a stickler for good washroom and it is well-stocked up compared to even Double Tree or Crown Plaza hotels. - Comfortable, quiet area. While exterior of hotel is just meh, the inside is more than sufficient. - Nice hotel staffs, especially a kind Hispanic man with a slight mustache who goes the distance to bring us a trolley to the carpaark although he is part of maintenance/janitor? Very friendly folks which makes us feel at home there. - Great coffeemaking facilities within the room - Interior of room reminds us that we are near to the famed Santa Monica beach! Why do you need plush carpets or chandeliers..?! - Plush, comfortable beds with sufficient pillows - Fast, free wifi - Free rollaway mattress for my brother - Free parking - huge plus for an area in SM. - My brother and I left USA after the third day, but mom continue to stay for 2 more days. The staff has kindly changed her room to a king-sized room in a quieter area as she likes to recuperate better. - Small gym but good enough for a quick pick-me-up Cons: - Free breakfast will be nice - IHOP is great, but 10% should apply to breakfast too esp when the hotel does not provide free breakfast - Brighter carpark lights - its quite dim especially at night - I can have ask for a nearer location to the beach, but you pay what you get. So if you prefer to live nearer, prepare to fork out another $100 more. And you need to pay for expensive public parking too. Overall, if I am on a slight budget and will still like to stay near to Santa Monica, this BW is my go-to choice once again.

« Fair Price For The Area »

As we traveled up the coast, we stayed here one night. Front desk was friendly and helpful. They unexpectedly upgraded us to a room on the 4th floor. Room was clean, bright and spacious. Bathroom was large with 2 sinks. Breakfast is not included but IHOP is right next door. Parking is under the building.

    5
    « Great value »

When we first pulled up outside I wasn't impressed but inside was clean and the staff were lovely and helpful. Our room was big enough for the three of us to stay in comfortably for four days but the big plus points were 1. It's a 20 minute brisk walk to Santa Monica's sea front, all the shops and the pier 2. Tasty donuts is a short walk away, they were great 3. There is a handy 7-11 a short walk away 4. The IHOP next door does a great breakfast 5. There is a bus route between the hotel and the beach / shops 6. It's a half hour drive from universal studios 7. It's a 45 minute drive to Disneyland.

    4
    « Good Bargain »

Great staff, decent room, good location, good price. Santa Monica is an expensive location and this hotel provided an excellent value. Would stay there again without reservation. Also close to LAX so convenient in all respects.

« Low Rate for Area But Badly In Need of Renovation »

Booked this location since it was among lowest rate in the very expensive SM area. Checked in and quickly determined that our planned 3 night stay would change to only 1 night. Room was small including the bathroom, not carpeted, just bland and basic. The hotel is badly in need of renovation. Felt we had checked into a drive up motel. Parking is free - thats a good thing. But they don't offer breakfast or even coffee in the morning. No coffee? -couldn't believe it, how cheap. There is an IHOP next door and hotel offers 10% discount but only on lunch and dinner and not breakfast. Since breakfast in the only meal most customers would eat there, this discount is of no benefit. Location is in mid town SM, still about 1.5 miles to the beach, the pier, or 3rd street promenade for the shops and restaurants. So you'll either have to drive thru traffic or take public bus to get there unless you don't mind hoofing that far. My suggestion is to pay up the additional $100 to stay right near/at the beach for the night and enjoy being close to some many things to do.

    3
    « Honeymoon »

Convenient location but very expensive for what you get. Extortionate parking fees and this was the first hotel on our three week break that didn't provide breakfasts and it was $6 for an orange juice. Very security conscious as well. Would not stay here again if we return, unimpressed.

    4
    « Good Basic Accomodation »

Santa Monica is a lovely, safe place to stay in LA. The hotel was clean and tidy with just the Basics. The Room was quite small. But had the necessities. Reasonable price for Santa Monica. Ihop next door for convenient meals with a 10% discount. Bus stops outside your door. $1.25 per trip and runs every ten minutes. the public transport was exceptional.

    4
    « Nice hotel-1st time stay »

We stayed here for the first night of our honeymoon. It was very nice, and clean. The front desk staff were friendly. I liked that the hotel had a restaurant connected to it, parking was nice to have since it is located on a busy street. We really enjoyed our stay.

    3
« Cost effective for area »

Stayed for 2 nights to help get over jet lag but its too far for everyday use if you are after visiting the main areas unless you drive/uber. Hotel staff were friendly enough but our room stank of smoke so we rang and were changed to room overlooking another room. You would think they might have made the effort to apologise by putting you in a better room. All the facilities were dated/tired but worked. The aircon was a large box on floor next to the bed. Off street free parking available. Linen seemed clean and room itself could do with lick of paint and new carpet as could the lobby areas. Decent hotel for the money in an expensive area

    3
    « Basic budget hotel »

Good basic hotel for the price. Walls are thin...beds are creaky...floors could use carpet to keep down the noise. The blinds on the windows are ok but the room is stark and has no color. The flooring would be good but i found hair (really long and I have short hair) all over the bathroom floor. Not the worst when it comes to cleanliness, but could use a little brushing up on the details. Staff were very very friendly and this is a plus. They switched our room when our neighbors decided to be very noisy all night. Elevators and parking serve both the hotel and the IHop which is annoying but not too bad. The area is okay... I walked conveniently to a Walgreens and some breakfast spots other than IHop. If you want a basic hotel with no frills for a good price this is your place.

    « Location, Location, Location »

The location of this hotel, in Santa Monica, near shopping restaurants and the beach make it the perfect place to stay if you are visiting or doing business in the area. Newly updated rooms are clean and nice. Refrigerators are a nice extra. Free parking and WiFi make this place extra special. Most hotels in SM charge for parking and WiFi. There is also an IHop right next door. You can catch the bus going down to the beach and 3rd Avenue Promenade, a bustling shopping and eating area with no traffic on the streets.

    3
    « Good budget hotel »

This hotel definitely has the most comfortable beds, amazing way to cope with jet lag. Approx 2 mile walk or just short bus ride to beach/ pier. The beach, sea and pier were lovely but marred by dropouts\\tramps occupying the grass verges, bus stops and street corners. I did not feel safe walking around. The town has a lovely selection of shops, bars and restaurants. The pacific coast highway is a scenic route taking you to Zuma beach and Malibu, well worth the drive. Glad I went to Santa Monica it was lovely but I wouldn't go again because of the high level of tramps\\ dropouts and the feeling of not being safe.

    4
« Good hotel conveniently placed and reasonnably priced for Santa Monica. »

Conveniently :located on Santa Monica Boulevard within a few minutes drive from the beach. Comfortable, modern and pleasant room decor, the private free underground car park is a plus. I would have appreciated a buffet breakfast included in the room price and not having to go to Ihop. The cost of the room is comparatively reasonnable for Santa Monica.

    5
« Good Hotel for Wedding in Area »

We stayed here for a wedding in Pacific Palisades followed by a reception in Malibu. It was a good location to get to all venues. The hotel is not on the beach or close to the beach, but close enough. We were able to drive down and park near the pier to walk out and enjoy everything. The staff was very friendly and helpful- my husband needed to buy a new shirt to wear with his suit, and got recommendations. The room was large and comfortable. There isn't a free breakfast but we had coupons to use in the iHOP located in a corner of the hotel, on the first floor.

    5
    « Holiday »

This was our first stop on arrival into the USA. The hotel was clean and comfortable, relatively quiet and friendly helpful staff. The IHOP restaurant was next door so breakfast was easy for us to start our day. There are regular services very nearby for access to Santa Monica pier where we caught our red bus tours. The beds were very comfortable and showers and bathrooms clean and tidy.

    4
    « Good Budget Hotel »

Very nice hotel located some way from the pier but just a$6 Uber ride away. The front desk staff of Gloria,Rose and Anna are so helpful you can't go wrong.Rooms are very nice with air con,big beds and great bathrooms an IHOP restaurant next door is great for a cheap breakfast.

    4
    « Good hotel »

Hotel is good, friendly and helpful staff, free parking. Was a little far out from Santa Monica, but this can be good if you want to see different areas of LA. Very clean and nice big room. IHOP next door good for convenient food

    3
« 2 night stay in Santa Monica »

We had a 2 night stay in Santa Monica, as a base for visiting Universal Studios. The hotel was clean but after using the bathroom you have to come back into the main room to use the sink for washing your hands. It's about a 30 minute walk to downtown Santa Monica and where the hotel is based, there isn't a great deal of choice for places to eat although we did get a good recommendation to eat at an Italian called Earth Wind & Flour (about a 10 minute walk away). Otherwise, it's next door to I-Hops. Metro station is about a 10 mminute walk away and with a change of trains in downtown LA, you can reach Hollywood in around an hour - quicker than using the car and less stressful!

    3
    « long walks »

We booked this hotel, because of the price, and it didn't disappoint. It is about a 30 minute walk to the Santa Monica Pier, but a nice walk. The room was overlooking the street, and was a bit noisy at night, even though the windows were triple paned. The rooms have no carpeting, so noise is a bit of an issue, but nothing too bad. The only restaurant nearby, is the IHOP connected to the hotel. We were given a 10% voucher for either lunch or dinner, but we never used it as we were always at the Pier. It is a good hotel for the price.

    5
    « Last minute stay »

We were searching for a hotel to stay at because we decided to make a trip to Santa Monica and Best Western was one of the only hotels with availability. We enjoyed our stay and the rooms were very nice and the beds very comfortable.

  • 4
« Friendly staff, clean comfortable rooms »

This hotel is reasonably priced, the rooms are large and clean and the staff were friendly. Santa Monica sea front isn't a massive distance away and can be reached after a 20 minute walk. I'm not sure I'd walk back after dark but cabs from the sea front to the hotel are less than $10. The hotel also has free secure parking which is a bonus.

    5
« Pleasant & Off the Beaten Path »

While the hotel was 20 blocks from the ocean, it offered a more relaxing atmosphere away from the crowds. The walk to the beach and 3rd avenue promenade was doable and a good way to get exercise for the day. The hotel is on a bus line for those that do not want to walk and of course there were taxis available. The hotel rooms were airy and clean. I particularly liked the imitation wood floor and the shutters on the windows. This gave the room a more coastal feeling.

    4
« Good hotel at a reasonable price in a very expensive town »

Good standard hotel in a quieter part of town. Room was very clean. Staff was very helpful. We were traveling with a rental car so free parking was a plus in Santa Monica. (It is a long walk to the beach.) We have stayed in more expensive hotels closer to the beach in Santa Monica; we found this one to be a good compromise of price and location.

    4
    « Second time here »

This hotel is clean and comfortable. The rooms are of a good size- 2 double beds and the desk and chair fitted fine. It is located alongside health facilities/hospitals and a low key/smart residential area on Santa Monica Boulevard. There is an I Hop diner next door. There are affordable restaurants and a Whole Food Market on nearby Wilshire Avenue. A short drive (long walk) takes you into the heart of Santa Monica and the beach and pier. This is our second time here. We have found it to be a good base to explore beautiful and fascinating LA.

    5
    « Very Pleased »

This was a clean, safe and updated Best Western in the Santa Monica area. Too far to walk comfortably to the pier but easy to catch the city bus or grab an Uber. No cost to park and free internet. We were very happy.

    4
    « Holiday »

We booked the Best Western for location and we were aware that it is a three star hotel. When we arrived we did not expect too much, just that it would be clean and tidy. We have stayed in three star hotels before but I must say this was one of the better. The staff were nice, courteous and very helpful. They accommodated us as best they could even though we were early. When we got to our room I was a little surprised. It was well equipped with all of the amenities required and more than adequate decor. With free under ground parking for and 10% off lunch and dinner at the connected ihop restaurant for guests, it's well worth the money. One thing I would say, if you don't like road noise you maybe affected as it is on the Santa Monica Boulevard and we could hear traffic despite the glazing.

    4
« Best Western the Best for Business »

Best Western is an affordable option for the location in Santa Monica. It is perfect for weekend or week long conference schedules at USM University of Santa Monica. The front staff is so welcoming and accommodating they make the stay so enjoyable!

    4
« Clean, functional and really helpful staff »

A good location for Santa Monica, but need to drive 5 mins to be in the heart of SM. Clean and well appointed rooms, we had a twin kingsize bedroom. Had a slight problem with our booking (booking.com had wrongly cancelled our booking!), but the front of house staff, Henny(?) in particular was excellent and sorted us out with minimum of fuss. Free parking! Great bonus, as was free wifi.

    4
    « Great Basic Hotel »

The Best Western Plus Gateway is a great, basic hotel. If you want all the "stuff" this is not where you want to stay. However, it is clean, conveniently located, rooms are attractive, staff was friendly and the service was great. The TV was huge, there is a refrigerator, free wi-fi and 2 complimentary bottles of water on the first night. The bed was awesomely comfortable, which was a VERY nice surprise. I always judge the housekeeping service in a hotel by whether or not the coffee packets in the room are re-stocked on a daily basis. My experience is that it's usually hit or miss. Not here - dead on every day. My only complaint would be the heating/cooling radiator. It was functional but loud when the fan was running. If not for that, I would have given it a 5.

    4
« Great place to stay »

Good location bus stop directly outside the hotel. Free parking also a bonus. Go to Big Joes for breakfast, freshly cooked delicious breakfast sandwiches for 4.95 all the locals use it and say it's been in business for generations, it's to the right of the hotel on the corner of 20th street and Broadway, 2 minutes walk. We also went to a baseball game at LA dodgers it was a fun experience. After asking directions to get there using public transport,we were advised to use the metro, train and a bus to get there which took just over an hour. On our return just 5 mins walk from the stadium we then saw a bus going to Santa Monica, it was much easier, both the 704 and number 4 bus stop outside the hotel on Santa Monica Boulevard takes about 1 hour 30 min but worth it for easier journey. Wish we had known about the bus for the journey there.

    « Good place »

Free parking, helpfull staff, friendly reception, rooms are clean, beds are fine, shower hot, prince is also fine, it' s in 20th street, About 20 min walk to the pier, bus no 1 stops outsider the hotel goes too pier en ven ice beach

    4
« Good location and reasonable value »

Quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of S Monica. The room was fine and the location good, being v close to a bus stop to take the short ride to the beach/pier. we did walk back from the sea front on evening - took about 30 minutes or so. There was no complimentary breakfast so had to use the ihop next door. This was OK, but the standard ihop menu is a bit limited. The free parking was very welcome. Overall, I would stay here again if I visited S Monica.

    4
« Good place to stay for a night »

We stay here for one night with the family during our trip trough California. Clean hotel, nice rooms, perfect location to visit all the atractions in Santa Monica, and free parking under the hotel. The frontdesk has nice staff. Will visit this hotel again

    4
    « Location wasn't that good »

The hotel was very far away from Hollywood and Santa Monica Beach and Pier, it is a good 45 minute walk away. There aren't many choices for breakfast, if you don't want to go to i-hop its a good 10 minute walk to find something good. The rooms were a decent size. The parking was very tight and not a lot of space.

    4
« Fine - but location not ideal »

Stayed one night in a 2 queensize room. Large hotel. Efficient and fast checkin /checkout. Fine room. All noise from street gone when shutting windows, which is a plus. Fine interior - but never seen the coffee maker placed in the bathroom next to the toilet before? (does not really seem hygienic). Located on 20th street we walked to the pier, and the distance was doable with two kids. However from 20th to 10th street the area/neighbourhood does not seem that safe. High rate of homeless people, and we did not feel too comfortable walking the last mile home after dark - but nothing happened, but would recommend either taking the blue bus or a cab to the hotel at night time. Good things: clean and spacious room, friendly staff, large garage Things to improve; breakfast not included and only available in nearby restaurants. Neighbourhood seems unsafe at night (but might not be).

    2
    « Disappointed »

unfriendly staff starting with the check in, they acted as if they were doing us a favor, then they put us next to the elevator. when asked to change the room, the attitude was of indifferent at best ., Slow elevators and very small. Tight parking and very dangerous, Extremely noisy. From both traffic and hospital ambulances. Cheapest coffee maker at a discount store would be alot better than what it is in the hotel room.

    4
« Close to UCLA hospital »

I needed a room that was handicap friendly for the night before Mom's surgery at UCLA. The room was very spacious & easy to navigate, bathroom with it's large shower with a seat worker perfectly & the friendly staff at the front desk made this stressful time a bit easier. They also offer a discount for those headed to the medical center. My only complaint is that the mattress squeaked when you rolled over, but the bed was very comfortable. I would stay here again & hopefully get to enjoy the close proximity to the beach & pier!

    4
« Clean property with very nice staff »

Stayed here for one night for a business travel; perfect for a one or two-night stay. It is located near the pier; just a short ride away. The staff were very nice and the property is clean and safe. Check-in and check-out were efficient. The IHOP next door made getting breakfast super-convenient. The hotel provided a coupon to use there; either 10 or 15 percent off. The mini fridge in the room was a bit noisy, but not a big deal.

    5
« Friendly, Clean, and Comfortable »

The room was very clean, the staff was always very helpful and nice. The IHOP next door made breakfast so easy. Location was great, could hop on a bus and be at the pier easily. There is also a wonderful Italian bistro located a few block away. Absolutely would recommend to anyone looking for a comfortable, safe, and clean place to stay in Santa Monica.

    4
    « UCLA Santa Monica »

We booked this stay for a medical appointment at UCLA. The staff was wonderful during the reservation process and let us know that if we were up to it, we could walk to our destination. We arrived early, and the front desk did not hesitate to arrange to get us into our room immediately. The beds were very comfortable and the room was clean and welcoming. The hotel was quiet. They gave us a coupon for the IHOP located downstairs. The medical building was indeed only about 3/4 mile away and easily within walking distance. Will definitely be staying at this Best Western again!

« Good Staff, Pricey and Noisey »

Spent 2 nights here in June, was allocated a room on the 4 th Floor. The room itself was as a diamond member of Best western of a good standard and had all the amenities we would expect. The room at night was unfortunately very noisy, it must be the air conditioner from outside on the roof. you could hear it all the way down the corridor. This hotel is a Best western Plus. I cannot understand how its a Plus. There are no facilities, breakfast , bar coffee machine or indeed pool. whats the plus for? (i have asked b w direct) The staff are very good friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean and the IHOP next door is reasonably priced. The hotel is very very expensive for what it offered, but it seems to be fairly in line with other hotels in the same area. I think next visit i would try somewhere else that has a pool and some decent facilities.

Typical overnight stop hotel, only a office chair to sit on in the room. very thin walls, I think we had a marching band practicing above us from about 5am! Staff were helpful and offered different suggestions as to how to get to the pier.

The best western plus gateway hotel was the first hotel during a car round-trip in the US. Our Plane that should have brought us to LA got canceled so we ended up being in LA a day later as planned. Our booking agency called the best western hotel to notify that we would be 1 day late and reported back to us that it was all fixed. When we finally got there the reception could not find any confirmation that the date was moved one day. Eventually the reception offered us an hotel room free of charge for the night. breakfast is not included. the shuttle service is also not available anymore. free parking underneath the hotel is nice.

    « Comfortable short stay »

I am a kind of 'dust, bug and germaphobe'. Therefore, I am very uncomfortable with carpets. There is always a concern about how effectively the carpet was cleaned. I am also very squeamish about looking under the bed. I have seen troubling things on carpets, under beds, that really 'freak me out'. I don't like fuzzy blankets, and I have heard stories about comforters laundered only once monthly. Clearly, I bring long pajamas with me on each hotel trip. I also bring my own pillow case. Based on my moderate 'obsessions' I was so pleased that the room had no carpet, but a wood type laminate floor. The platform bed was very comfortable. The bed was dressed with a thin, open weave cover. The room and bathroom seemed very clean. I was relieved by that!! So, now that I have identified myself as a 'crazy woman ' (lol!), I will say that I was very pleased with my overall stay at this Best Western. The location is pretty close to many attractions. The Santa Monica pier is about 1 mile away , which is a 40 min walk or a very quick cab ride. Ihop is right on the corner. The hotel offers discount certificates for lunch and dinner. The WiFi was free and did not seem to be a problem. Two free bottles of water are available in the room for the first night stay Front desk staff were quite pleasant. I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT I am to due to air transportation problem caused by several weather We were staying in a very comfortable, convenient hotel.

    « 3 night stay was ok »

The hotel is crammed between other buildings, which made my room very dark. The hotel seemed to be clean, bed was comfortable. The is an IHOP next door. All in all, I would say the hotel is average, although that says a lot for the area. The price was acceptable for Santa Monica.

    « Very Comfortable stay »

Went to Santa Monica on business and stayed at this hotel for two nights. I did arrive early and tried to get into my room early but was advised that the system was rebooting and it would be a while. Ended up waiting til after regular check in. Room was clean and tidy. Staff was nice when any direct contact was made. Food at the IHOP next door was not the best. Ended up with hair in my food twice but that is for another review. Just mentioning because they are connected and if you order room service that is where the food comes from.

« Great stay; close to beach; reasonably priced »

I had a great week-long stay at the Best Western Plus Gateway. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff was excellent and responded to all requests that I made. A mile from Santa Monica Beach and Pier. The only downfall was that this property is right next to a hospital; it is difficult to sleep with the windows open with the sounds from the street below.

Great hotel, comfortable beds, amazing breakfast next door at the IHOP I unfortunately left my iPad in the room and was on my way to Vegas before I realised, fortunately I contacted the hotel and spoke to the extremely helpful Sheila who organised getting the iPad back to me via FedEx to our hotel in Vegas within 2 days. Thank you Super Sheila ??

    « Pleasantly Suprised »

Good value considering the area. Nothing flashy but was comfortable and would definitely stay again. Stayed for 10 nights as a couple on holiday. Great shower head with good pressure and distribution. Lighting lacked a little. Room very clean.Could hear people moving about upstairs, this didn't bother me in the slightest but some people seem to be overly sensitive about this. It has fitness facilities that I didn't use but seemed adequate. Bed and pillows very comfortable. Car parking was simple, no gates or cards. Didn't like the disposable cups, not very environmentally friendly. The wifi was quite slow at times but that could have been peak usage times. Over all very happy, went expecting very little and pleasantly surprised.

« Great Place to Stay »

This hotel has an upscale feel. It is located in a convenient area of Santa Monica with nice underground parking. It is clean and the staff is very friendly. The IHOP on site is excellent as well. We had a great stay!

    « Great value - great location »

This very clean and well decorated hotel is right in the middle of Santa Monica's shopping area and a short walk to the pier and ocean. The rooms looked to be newly decorated and everything was in good working order.

    « Could've been better »

Our family decider to stay here for 4 nights two teens, my husband and I because of the location it's close to the beach yet about 30 minutes from Hollywood. We gir there a little early so the checked us in early free of charge. First night we had zero issues the next morning however we were getting ready to leave for the day and saw a coco roach by the key when we went to grab the key. I immediately called front desk and they had someone come get it and said they couldn't do anything until manager got there. I was upset they said that has never happened before which I find hard to believe but we had plans and had to leave for the day and manager called me and offered to move us rooms and half off for that 1 night but that all they did. I was disappointed. If it weren't for that happening I would've had a higher rating because this place is a coupleminutes from the beach which was perfect.

    « Family Medical Stay »

Hotel was very clean and accommodating. We were there while I was having a medical treatment at John Wayne Cancer Institute. My family was able to enjoy Santa Monica and the beach while I was able to walk over to Hospital. Staff is wonderful and understand your needs if your are having medical treatment at the hospital.

    4
    « Very Nice Location »

We were very pleased with the location near medical offices and Dr.'s. The hotel was great, although pricey, and we enjoyed the stay. The facilities were clean, the staff very courteous and helpful, and all the services were excellent.

    5
    « Free parking (Yahoo!) »

Good quality hotel but a good 30 min walk to the waterfront. There are shuttle buses and a metro available. All staff very helpful. Ihop restaurant next door. One advantage is free parking at the hotel which can be very expensive in Santa Monica. Although not ideally located for the waterfront it is still a very good quality hotel. If you intend doing any of the LA tours they will pick up at the hotel.

    5
    « Quant Stay »

The hotel is very clean and the rooms were decorated like a beach type bungalow. Hardwood floors and beach house style window blinds made it feel bigger than it was. The only drawback was they don't serve breakfast but there is an IHOP connected to the hotel and the parking in the garage was free. The hotel is a lengthy walk to the beach but a very easy drive and the plentiful parking in the garages by the promenade was cheap. Great hotel

    « Nice experience »

I had a nice vacation stay at Best Western. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and all supplies were provided when needed. The beds and pillows and comforters were nice and clean. I had a great time in Santa Monica. Beach was about 5 mins drive from the hotel. Overall very nice hotel. I would recommend it for family vacation stay.

    3
    « A pricey average hotel »

Let's start with the fact that Santa Monica is a very expensive town but frankly it's not worths the wallet! We had a room on the first floor located on the very noisy intersection of two of the noisest streets in L.A. and our sleep was very disturbed by that. The parking lot contains not enough spots for every guests' cars and so you have to be lucky to catch one. They don't serve breakfast and over the years the aerea has increasingly lost its charm. Not coming back.

    2
« Not for disabled persons »

Rooms were to small for w/c. Can not get to Ice machines and handicap rooms to far from elevator. Only 3 disabled parking spaces for entire hotel. The restraint door is as far away from the hotel as possible making it difficult to walk to it if you had ambulation issues. When making my reservations, I felt that the employees understood our needs yet that was not the case. The bell man was not interested in doing anything for us other than dumping our belonging and getting his money.

    4
« Good location to sleep in Santa Monica »

The hotel is not one of those who will leave you impressed by the appearance but is located in a very good position. You can go on for 5 minutes in the center of Santa Monica Rooms are good, a little small, overlooking not very good, the bathroom is pretty good, service is quite good, parking is free, as well as wifi, take into account for business and family travelers

Clean fresh room - value for money - good location - good friendly staff - asked and received early check in which was appreciated as I arrived after long flight. Would stay again when travelling through LA

    5
    « Comfortable stay »

This was the last of 17 hotels we stayed at during our Route 66 drive holidays. We stayed there for the last 3 nights. Like 2 previous Best Western Hotels we stayed at, they were very clean, comfortable (especially the big beds), very comfortable stay in a convenient location in Santa Monica on its main street. 20 minutes walk to the pier.

    5
    « Nicest people ever »

We stayed here to visit our new granddaughter across the street at St. John's. The people were the nicest! We needed to send a fax and then email something important. I have stayed at great hotels, from Ritz Carlton to Four Seasons, and never found a nicer or more helpful staff. We will be back again.

    4
    « A pleasant surprise! »

Not a fun trip, but a trip to St. John's hospital, right across the street. So, it was very handy. Very friendly staff, free parking (in Santa Monica???), and a nice clean room, nothing fancy, mind you, but clean and neat.

    5
« excellent resolution to parking pickle »

great hotel in perfect location. I've been staying here for 20 years and it still looks fresh and current. It's the only place I stay in Santa Monica. Santa Monica is always expensive but this is the best deal in town.

    3
« Small rooms, no complimentary breakfast »

Overall the room looked ok, but it was tiny. The coffee making facillities were in the bathroom. Aside from that it felt as though we were placed in a dumping room, the door was practically blocked by a cleaning cart and the flyer rack was right next to it, meaning people were chatting there. Also our view consisted of stairs where people were walking by. Probably a decent hotel, just make sure you're not jn the ground floor rooms.

    4
    « Good »

It's very clean.. Just costs too much for too little IMHO. Too far to walk to beach. Parking garage is small for an SUV or truck. A breakfast would be nice. IHOP is expensive near the hotel. Easy enough to get to from interstate and airport if you want a beach stay

    4
« Nothing fancy but great place to sleep »

clean, if you need a place with a decent room, this will serve nicely. Good shower and bed. Covenient location. Has an I Hop right next door, and walking 2 blocks up to wislhire Blvd there are many resataurant optiions

    4
    « Pleasant Chain Hotel »

Stay at the hotel was quite pleasant: well kept, nicely decorated, and spacious rooms; pleasant encounters with staff--desk clerk, garage attendant, maintenance man who helped with our luggage; and free parking in underground garage. It is a distance from the ocean front, but the blue bus can take you there in minutes (bus stop right across the street) and the distance allows for a little more quiet. One drawback is no breakfast of any kind.

    4
    « Great hotel »

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was fantastic! Easily the best hotel we stayed at in the USA whilst on a budget. Great value for money, room very clean and comfortable, the bed especially was comfortable. I was sick whilst staying here and i felt lucky to stay in a nice hotel while not feeling well. It also has an IHOP attached which is handy and they gave us a 20% off voucher which we used for lunch on our first day. It was in a good area just a short uber ride to the Santa Monica Pier and yummy restaurants and great local shopping. We also needed to do laundry while we were there and whilst the hotel did not have its own self service laundry a short walk up the street there was a laundromat. Staff at this hotel were not particularly friendly but they were sort of helpful if you needed it but they could work on their customer service skills. We used the complimentary shuttle a couple of times, once they didnt wait for us we were on our way but they left without us, advised staff when we got back by taxi that they left us behind but they didnt seem to care and told us that they dont wait for guests even though we had called and asked them to come and get us. No real issues though, very happy with this hotel we would absolutely stay again

    « Great Location! »

We were in town for the birth of our granddaughters at St John's. Hotel was just a block away from the hospital. The room was very clean, comfortable, quiet and reasonable! Just a short Uber ride to 3rd street shopping. Would definitely stay here again :)

« Long weekend in Santa Monica »

Together with my teenage daughter we spent a long weekend in Santa Monica. The hotel was reasonable priced and the staff was welcoming and service minded. We walked to the beach from the hotel, but it is like 20 minutes+ walk. Hotel has shuttle, and they also have parking if you bring your own car. Rooms are clean, and it met our expectations.

    4
    « Great Stay »

Not an awesome location, actually in a hospital/medical district, but at the same time, VERY centrally located in Santa Monica, with everything minutes away. Had sworn off of Best Westerns years ago, but this property has changed my mind! The room was updated and very clean and the staff were very friendly.

    5
« Good location and spotless hotel. »

This was very conveniently located, very comfortable, and very clean. The staff was helpful and friendly. Free parking in an underground garage. Felt very safe in good neighborhood and key activated elevator. Room was large and as quiet as you could expect in the city. Windows opened too. Only drawback was no pool. Stayed 4 nights while visiting family. Ihop next door was convenient. Will book here again.

    4
    « Convenient location »

The hotel was clean with plus sized room and very comfortable bed. It was pretty quiet. We weren't disturbed by traffic or other guests. The elevators were slow, but parking was free. Had trouble getting on their wi-fi and the tech person tried to be helpful but didn't know how to fix the problem and told me to call my internet company I didn't and ultimately got online. We were 2.2 miles from the Pier and Beach which was great. Very close to 3rd Street Promenade which offered a neat experience with street vendors performing and stores to saunter in and out of. We would have liked it if the hotel had a bar/lounge and a pool. There weren't any bars or lounges within "our" walking distance as it was quite cool at night, and the shuttle only ran until 8 pm which brought you to and from the Santa Monica Pier. Cabs were around $18-20 round trip. We were about 25 minutes from the Grauman's Chinese Theatre in LA and other area attractions, so the location was very good and convenient, and overall a good choice.

    4
« Santa Monica Best Western »

We chose the Best Western Plus in Santa Monica based on a friend's recommendation that it was close to everything and nice. They were correct. We were 2.2 miles from the Santa Monica Pier and Beach; close to the 3rd Street Promenade and only minutes away from LA. The hotel was clean and offered free wi-fi and free parking, which was a great bonus. They offered a shuttle to the Pier/Beach but the last run was 8 p.m. so if one wanted to hang out, drink or go dancing, not driving wasn't an option unless you took a cab, which round trip cost about $18-20. The hotel didn't offer a bar or lounge and didn't have a pool, both of which would have been very nice. There weren't any close restaurants to walk to either, even though we were told there were. I supposed if one is a walker, there were choices, but too far for us to want to walk. The attached IHop offered beer and wine, but wasn't a hang out type of place. We enjoyed our stay - the room was nicely sized, clean with a comfortable bed and pillows, but count on driving if you stay here.

« Decent business hotel, staff could be more helpful »

I stayed here for five nights, two longer than expected due to cancelled flights back to the northeast from snow. The hotel is clean and modern, the rooms had a 'California' feel to them with the color schemes and very nice white wooden blinds that made the rooms dark when needed. The location is great - close to everything in Santa Monica. It was very loud inside the rooms, very easy to hear traffic, sirens, and noises from outside the room. The staff at the front desk were not very friendly - with one word answers and it almost seemed like you were bothering them with questions. There is no restaurant at the property, and they charge for everything. They refer you to the iHop next door. Room service also comes from iHop. The 'business center' are two computers in the lobby that don't work very well. The hotel is expensive, and you don't get much in return. There are plenty of other hotels in Santa Monica that offer much more, especially the helpfulness of the staff.

    4
« Great value for money »

If you are staying for one or two nights this ticks the box with large clean bedrooms and good car parking it makes a good base. Bit of a walk into town but a taxi was $7 each way. Also IHOP is next door for a good breakfast and the hotel offers discount vouchers

    4
    « Best Western Gateway »

The clue is in the name - it's not near the beach/pier, but they're easy enough to get to. Nice modern, bright building, very clean. Pleasant and helpful staff, parking in the underground carpark is included. However, we thought it was expensive for what it was.

    3
    « Definitely Three Stars »

We were not familiar with Best Western but thought the Plus would be nice. We should have had lowered expectations, but here are the facts. First Impressions: Small lobby and not the newest of hotels. The staff was nice at check-in. Two computers and a tv in the lobby. Our hope was that the room would be nicer than the lobby. Check-in: You received a parking pass, wi-fi code, map of the area, keys, 20% off coupon for IHOP(lunch and dinner), and instructions for the shuttle that takes you close to the pier and promenade for free. They is a $25 per day incidental fee that is refunded if you don't use any of the pay for use services(they did not mention until I asked at check out). To the room: You key must be used to get to your floor. There are vending machines and an ice machine on each floor by the elevator. The rooms are okay. The sink is separate from the shower and toilet. The tv is flat screen and there is a fridge(ours would not close). They gave us two complimentary bottles of water. No carpet in the rooms which made it seem more like a two star. The mattress was extremely comfortable. The staff: We had to have our linens changed upon arrival and the bathroom "re-cleaned"(blue soap residue from previous guest). The good thing to say is they were quick to fix and apologetic. They try and meet your request and fulfill their obligations(shuttle driver was a no show so they paid for a cab). We say we would stay there again as it was about $500 for two nights and included parking but I would prefer another hotel that had a few more amenities.

« Location, Location, Location (and price) »

The upgraded rooms are lovely, the staff are helpful, and you cannot beat the central location for doing business on the West Side. Free parking and just a 15min walk to Ocean Ave. The co-located IHOP even delivers...

    4
« good place for close to medical facilities »

rooms were clean, parking was easy under the hotel, service was fine. Would have liked a larger lounge, and it's close to only the IHOP, which is not the best restaurant, but the only one within easy walking distance. It is a much better value than the hotels down by the beach.

    3
    « Business stay »

Fair service, fair room, not really anything special. Great location, clean, room only no additional amenities. Staff is pleasant but not real accommodating. Street side is very noisy. Faces Santa Monica Blvd.

    « Good budget hotel »

My daughter and I recently stayed at the Best Western for 4 nights: The good: - Really friendly and helpful staff - Our room had lovely modern decor - Really clean and tidy room The not so great: - I found the hotel a little too far away from 3rd St Promenade and the beach, the walk was about 20 minutes which was fine during the day but I wouldn't do it at night. The hotel does have a shuttle but it doesn't run on weekends and only runs on the hour so not always convenient. A cab ride in to 3rd St was about $10 so not too bad - We were on the 3rd floor and we heard heaps of noise from the 4th floor - constantly - The bathroom door didn't stay open by itself so we ended up keeping a chair against it so we could keep the door open when we wanted to All in all it's a good hotel, but just a little far away from 3rd St Promenade for us.

    5
« Gem of Santa Monica »

Twice a year I travel to Santa Monica to see my oncologist who is in the building across the street from this hotel. The Best Western Gateway, aside from being so convenient, offers a discount for doctor visits, discounts for the restaurant on the premises and has remodeled the facility to offer a very beautiful and comfortable stay. The staff is friendly and always helpful!

    3
    « Perfectly acceptable »

We wanted to stay close to St. John's Hospital where a relative was staying. This is the most convenient hotel to the hospital. The hotel is very well maintained. Room was very clean. Only downside was that the mattresses were in terrible condition. Hotel should invest in new beds.

    4
« Very Nice Best Western! »

We needed a place close for a medical procedure and this was just across the street from the doctors office. We were very lucky that it was such a nice place to stay. It had modern decor that was new and fresh. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The IHOP nearby had very good food. The WiFi was free and worked well. There were computers in the lobby to print boarding passes. It is about a mile to the Pier and the 3rd street promenade. They had a medical stay rate. We were happy that we chose this hotel.

    4
    « Very nice room »

Our room was on the 3rd floor and had beautiful plantation shutters on two walls! Everything was updated. Nice laminate flooring and very clean. After searching for a cost effective hotel to stay at, I'm happy that this turned out to be a great choice. Also convenient to 3rd Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier.

    5
    « Good location »

We need a place to stay prior to a medical appointment at St. John's. This was a perfect location and a very comfortable place to stay. Easy walking distance to nice restaurants for dinner. The IHOP on site was good for breakfast. The room was clean and comfortable.

    4
« Decent hotel in an okay location. »

This was the final stop of our California road trip and overall was happy with our stay at the hotel. You know what you are going to get with a Best Western and it didn't disappoint. The rooms were nice and spacious and the IHOP next door was a nice touch for breakfast. Free parking was a good touch too. The location isn't fantastic being a 30 min walk to the beach, but the hotel does offer a free shuttle service all day upon request.

« Made me rethink Best Western »

This is not the typical BW that I'd been to for many years before, where the rooms are accessible from an outside hallway, from any stairway that leads to the parking lot. Instead, this is a nice hotel, located next to Santa Monica Blvd, that happens to have a decent IHop attached to it. Front desk service was prompt and polite, even when I checked in way earlier than my scheduled time (any fee that might have been assessed was waived). The 2nd floor room was well-appointed (still had that poorly-placed AC unit that blasts air right at the bed and you cannot redirect the air-flow), with a modern flat screen TV, comfortable bed, a desk with two complimentary bottles of water on it, and plenty of electrical outlets to choose from. The desk chair was well intentioned but uncomfortable to sit on, with a hard bar running right through the middle of it that no padding could help. The included internet was reliable (but the directions for the SSID were incorrectly printed). There was vinyl plank flooring that looked great. The king bed was pretty comfortable, with two mounted reading lights on the headboard. The bathroom was very good as well; clean, nice quality amenities, and in good repair. They did provide a 20% off coupon for lunch/dinner at the iHop but I didn't try it except for breakfast (which was very good). All in all, this was a surprise because I'd lumped all BWs into the same old category: "meh, I'd stay there if I was forced to, but not by choice". But this BW changed my mind and I do not hesitate recommending this place for business trips to this area.

    5
« Excellent place to stay, centrally located for my trip »

This was an excellent place to stay. The staff was helpful and friendly. They had a shuttle that ran down to the beach area/restaurants/shopping. We had one issue with a smoker but the staff and management resolved this to our satisfaction. The IHOP restaurant next door was only adequate but there were other places within a short distance that were better.

    3
    « It's just a motel... »

I wouldn't consider this place a "Plus." Basically, it's a newly renovated motel, with rooms that open to the outside. It was pretty spartan--our room didn't have anything on the walls or bedside lamps. They do serve a great breakfast, though (although the breakfast room is small and gets crowded at peak hours). Frankly, I think it wasn't worth what we paid.

    5
« More than meets the eye... »

We were dissatisfied with the prior accommodations at the HIE. The weather was rain causing a colder temperature than expected for LA. This hotel was much warmer that those having open stairways and egress to the rooms. The IHOP is a big plus... one can order breakfast or lunch or dinner from a menu at a discount, and seating is not a problem. Rooms are very clean (they have eliminate the carpets that are always dirt collectors). It is a better stay and at a lower price.

    « Great Hotel »

A very nice hotel with a comfy bed. Nice & clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. It's a short drive to Santa Monica pier. Free parking and Free wifi. IHOP next door and pretty reasonable for food. Whilst here you should visit Hollywood and do some LA tours. It's a great place!

« No frills, but friendly, helpful, clean and comfortable »

Myself, my daughter, and my sister stayed here for a week in February 2016, when we travelled here to celebrate my daughters 18th birthday. We booked a triple room several months ago, which had two king size beds in it, and although my daughter and I slept in the same bed, it wasnt ideal. Their information does tell you it can be two king size beds or can include a single bed if you book a triple room, but it was still disappointing. Saying that - The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was clean, and the beds were very comfortable. This hotel is about one and a half miles from Santa Monica Beach, but there is a very good bus service.

    5
« Very convenient to the hospital »

stayed here while my wife was in the hospital for a couple of days. It was clean and the beds were comfortable, though it's a bit noisy due to its location. Right next to an IHOP and it also has a little workout area. Walking distance to the hospital. I would stay again, if I needed to.

    5
« Surprised at how clean and efficient Best Western was »

I was a bit grumpy about having to stay at a Best Western because I always thought they were not very upscale (I had never stayed at one before). The BW in Santa Monica was clean, the staff was excellent, and the accommodations were extremely comfortable. It's run better than many of the more expensive luxury hotels and I was treated very well.

Very nice hotel, walking distance to many eating places. The parking was good, (underground). There is a security guard on duty for you safety. You get a discount on the restaurant and it has a gym that is very nice.

    « Wonderful! »

I had done some extensive research for a hotel in Santa Monica, since my husband was running the LA marathon and we wanted to stay in the finish line area. The Best Western was wonderful!! The room was a nice corner room with room darkening plantation shutters. I liked the vinyl wood like flooring. It felt more clean than carpeting. It was noisy at night with sirens from nearby hospitals. We had a rental car and free parking a plus. Always found a spot near the elevator. But what we really enjoyed was the staff. The front desk could not have helped us more. Being from a small town in Illinois they helped us maneuver the big city lol. With help for a taxi for race day to a great Italian Restaurant 3 blocks away. They answered every silly question we had with a smile and led us in the right direction. The cleaning people were friendly and always had our room done by the time we were back. We would completely recommend this hotel unless you need to be right on the beach and will return if we are ever in the area again. Thank you Best Western for making our vacation a great one!

    4
    « great location »

This is an older facility but recent refurbishing has made the rooms appear big and airy. Removing the old carpets modernized the rooms. The bathrooms are also nicely done. Good location, as within easy driving distance to the downtown parking garages. Free parking is in the basement which is an added plus. iHOP right next store and you get a discount by staying at the hotel. Prices have crept up but over all it is a good place to stay.

Hotel is located near family so we always stay there. nicely upgraded rooms with refrig, internet, safe, nice TV, and very clean. Best price in Santa Monica, just a short bus ride to Promanade and beach. Many great restaurants nearby by car.

    « Great Service! »

My sister and I spent three nights in Santa Monica the end of January. We were visiting family in Pacific Palisades and especially to see the Getty Museum and Villa. This hotel location was perfect. It was clean, reasonable and all the staff was great. A special Thank You to Christina, who helped me retrieve something I left in the room safe. She went out of her way to have it mailed to me, saving me money and a lot of hastle. We would definitely stay in this hotel again if we geet a chance to return. We also had great experiences with Uber service getting around town and the airport.

« Comfortable, but not so clean. »

Great location. Comfortable beds. Very courteous team. I asked for the last floor and got it. There are small bed lights above the beds - nice touch. But, the room can use more attention from the cleaning team: We arrived after midnight. So, finding a receipt ( not ours) in the trash inside the room, and dust bunnies in the bathroom hidden not so well next to the toilet makes me think... Other than that, the room looks clean. We were too tired to complain, and for only one night stay I didn't want to bother.

« Great place to stay when in LA »

The entire staff was OUTSTANDING! Very helpful answering questions, arranging tours, directions, tips on local venues, restaurants, attractions. Complimentary shuttle and shuttle a real plus. Would definitely recommend

« Nice hotel with free parking but Ihop? »

For a business traveller this is surely an option as it's quite nicely situated in regards to getting on an off the 10, the 405 or the Pacific Coast Highway and parking is free for hotel guests. The rooms are clean but the wi-fi is unfortunately not entirely seamless and in fact in some areas of the hotel it just doesn't work. Really annoying but it's free and works in the lobby at least. The breakfast option includes Ihop and that's about it unless you feel like venturing into the street looking for a taco van. After eating Ihop breakfast for a week, you will surely be looking for other alternatives but having said that the said Ihop is rather clean and nice (as Ihops go).

« Best Westernn in Santa Monica »

My wife and I stayed at this hotel because it was close to the UCLA hospital where I was going to have surgery. It was very convenient because it was only 5 blocks away. The hotel was clean, all of the people at the front desk, cleaning people were friendly and always said hello. The big advantage is the free parking. We did eat at the Ihop located next door which is good. It was nice that the hotel gave us a discount voucher. Overall very good place to stay.

« Good quality hotel with helpful staff »

Two nights here with an Ihop attached. This was a typical Ihop breakfast. Just what we needed. Although the location was well away from the centre, it was well served by buses. These are cheap and regular. The helpful reception staff recommended an LA tour which was fabulous. Picked up right outside and everything ran smoothly.

« FIrst time in Santa Monica »

Staff was excellent and rooms were comfortable. It's in the downtown area so a little difficult getting in and out of parking. Room was clean and well maintained. Nice sundeck to catch the evening breeze.

    « Wonderful Hotel »

We were looking for a location that was close to family in West Hollywood and near to LAX! This Best Western was a great find! It had underground parking for guests and allowed visitors to use the garage as well! There are wonderful restaurants within walking distance and a short car ride to the 3rd street promenade and the Santa Monica Pier! The rooms are spacious and very clean and the beds comfortable. We would not hesitate to stay here again in the future! Just beware of rush hour on Santa Monica Blvd. because the backup is unbearable... We did not know this in advance... Take it for what it's worth!!!!

    « Lovely rooms! »

We enjoyed our brief trip at this hotel. Reception was excellent and gave us help with booking taxis' and directions to things. Ana was especially lovely and helpful in getting us a quiet room and giving advice on getting places. The rooms are lovely and clean. Bright and modern. I think they are modelled on a beach house style. The bed was comfy with a good size TV. Bathroom a bit older but was clean. We used the iHop restaurant next to the hotel. We used the 20% off voucher provided by the hotel which was handy. Food was quite good and reasonably priced. The female waiting staff were very nice and good. We did have a grumpy male waiter serving us for breakfast on our last morning who was rude and took our order wrong and when we challenged him. He blamed us for pointing to the wrong item on the menu, even though we verbally told him the correct dish. Think a bit of customer service training required. Apart from that, it was good. Location was a bit out of the way for us with no car and so having to rely on expensive taxi fares. Overall, if location fits for you then this is a good place to stay.

« So Happy I Found This Place »

Happy I found it, as it will become my new go-to in Santa Monica. No, it is not on the waterfront. If you're looking for that, go elsewhere in Santa Monica or, preferably, Malibu. It IS clean, exceptionally well-run and friendly, has easy underground self-parking, is close to all kinds of great restaurants, and was a pleasant stay. The only thing not great for me was the lack of a real view, but I'm sure there are rooms with good views. I tend to use my hotels as crash pads, thought, so this was not an issue at all. I hope to go back. As a bonus, an IHOP shares the building, so that kind of food is easy.

    5
« Convenient to John Wayne Cancer Center »

Booked based on closeness to John Wayne Cancer Center, pleasant experience, IHOP next door. Some city noise but its where you are. Great bed. Security nice surprise, Parking little awkward but conveniently close.

« Nice location, clean hotel, friendly people »

We were in town to attend a concert at Staples Center. This hotel was a good location that wasn't too far away from the concert venue and was very close to the Santa Monica Pier. It was a very clean hotel and the people were very friendly. Definitely would stay here again and recommend it to others.

    « Great »

Just stayed for 4 nights at this hotel and it was great. Room was big enough for 4 adults, bed was comfortable, bathroom was clean. Main things I look for in a hotel. The staff were polite and helpful and our room was always serviced well upon return!

    « Great hotel »

We stayed one night while In Santa Monica. Great service and loved the rooms. The windows were my favorite. the beds were very comfortable! It is not in the middle of everything but close enough that it is good value for the money.

« A little far from the action, but nice room and free parking, which is a big plus in LA. »

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel with our 2 teenage kids. The room had a tiled floor and was quite clean and comfortable. The parking situation was free and there was an I Hop restaurant conveniently located right next door. (The I Hop was surprisingly expensive.) The area is sort of dead except for the hospital nearby...not too many restaurants walking distance. One evening we drove a few blocks away to a Thai restaurant and walked along the promenade in Santa Monica, which was a bustling, fun area.

    4
« Great Hotel - Close to UCLA Breast Center »

Rooms were very clean and decorated in a beach theme. Note**our room did not have any carpet but instead a tile floor.** Not a problem for us but we were surprised when we walked in. Lots of restaurants nearby and neighborhood felt safe. We will return.

    « Great Service »

I found all hotel representatives to be friendly, professional, courteous and efficient. This is always what i hope to find in lodging, especially at the end of a long day. I would recommend this hotel.

    4
    « Pricey but good »

The price of the hotel was a little steep, but the amenities were excellent. The convenience of the hotel's location to where we needed to go was a big factor in choosing this hotel. Nice and clean and friendly staff - excellent night's rest. I am typing more word to try and fill in 200 characters ......

    2
« Good location, but only marginally acceptable »

The location of the hotel is good. But that is the best quality of the hotel. There was loud music constantly playing in the hallway. The cleaning and room service was poor. The hotel gives you a coupon for IHOP, but it is only good after 12 pm and frankly the food there was not good. When complained about poor service, all I got was empty and fake "I am so sorry". It would have been better if they offer some discount for not getting what I was paying for. I would look elsewhere for accommodations because for the price the value you will receive is not worth it.

    4
« Very clean and Comfortable »

Great hotel, underground carpark for guests. Very polite and helpful staff. Clean and comfortable room with coffee making facilities. Located next to shuttle bus stop which cost 1 dollar each way. This made travel around Santa Monica very convenient and cheap. Would return to this hotel .

    5
« Clean, Comfortable and Convenient »

This hotel was all that it needed to be to stay in Santa Monica. It was close to the beach, restaurants and shopping. I brought the whole family (husband and two teenage kids) and the room was comfortable for all of us. I felt safe in the parking garage and liked the additional layer of security knowing that an active room key is needed to use the elevators. Overall, BW was all we needed for a little getaway.

    4
    « Clean hotel »

Stayed here 3 nights over Christmas , clean comfortable quiet rooms within walking distance to down town and pier( 1.8 miles) free parking and 20% of lunch and dinner in ihop, could not fault it for what we wanted, nice polite and helpful staff certainly make it a good choice

    4
« A nice hotel to stay in »

I would like to say that this hotel was pretty good. The furniture in the room is a little dated, but the bed was comfortable. Nice functioning AC. A gripe, I had, was the noise from the people above. It almost made it hard to sleep. Ask for a top floor room.

    5
    « Awesome! »

Each and every one of your employees at this particular hotel (Gateway Santa Monica) were magnificent in the performance of their duties. I think whoever is in charge of hiring should get a "pat on the back" or a raise. I was at your hotel for a number of days with a companion so I could recover following a surgery at St. John's Hospital and was in an ADA room. It was perfect. And when I say your employees are excellent, I am comparing them against top tier properties that cost 5 times more. Your employees are better because they execute their duties perfectly, e.g., fast check in and check out, but they also seem like caring, real people. Your recent re-model is beautiful; beds are very comfortable; and free shuttle was very helpful. Location is great too.

    5
    « Best is right! »

Loved the sleek contemporary look of the hotel. Laminate floors in the room were a plus-as you felt room was clean-with no "remnants" of previous guests. Wish more hotels would do this. Good bang for your buck. Loved the free parking. Would definitely return. A little over a mile walk to the shops and beach but we found lots of closer options around the hotel as well!

    4
    « Overnight stay »

Stayed here for an overnight business trip. Great rate at $168. Nice location. Friendly staff and clean rooms, I had booked in advance but even though i had cut & pasted the reservation details to my calendar they didn't have my booking, but they had a room. IHOP next door for breakfast. Perfectly acceptable.

« Nice Place, Great Location »

If you are looking for a decent place to stay in Santa Monica, you should consider the Best Western. Great location right off of Santa Monica Blvrd, clean (not only rooms, but whole property), attentive staff, inside parking and wifi included. Have stayed here a couple of times (3 to be exact) over the last 4 yrs while in the area for visits to St. John's Health Center. And as ultra convenient as the property is to the hospital (across the street and down a block), it ends up being a great place to stay regardless of your reasons to be in the Santa Monica area. A recent (2014) remodel of the property makes it even nicer (lobby, halls and rooms are brighter and more up to date/modern). As others have said, better than your average Best Western. Always a great experience...recommend.

« Great place to stay in Santa Monica »

Great place to stay in Santa Monica. Centerly located, excellent parking close to freeways with plenty of amenities in the area. Will stay there again soon. Guest rooms are on secure floors where only hotel guests and employees have access

« Perfect hotel to stay (shuttle to downtown) »

We have stayed in 2 other Best Western hotels in the past 2 months, and this hotel is by far the best. Great wifi in rooms - hurray. No free breakfast though but that is fine, there is iHop restaurant connected to this hotel (with 20% discounts coupon from hotel - for lunch and dinner use only). Hotel is very clean and pleasing. Staff are friendly and well-groomed. Lobby has 2 computers for guest to use (handy for airline check-in), but not in the other 2 hotels we stayed. Hotel has elevators. Love shopping at Third Street Promenade (downtown area), and the shuttle is the best way to get there (runs hourly so let the front desk know 20 minutes ahead). We stayed here because we prefer a quiet night sleep; thinking downtown might be a bit noisy in the late hours. There is a Ralph's supermarket - only a 20-minute walk from hotel.

    4
    « Pricey But Nice »

This hotel is nice but very pricey. We stayed there 1 night because I had a Doctor's appointment at the Medical Building across the street (we traveled from Nevada). There are several medical buildings in that area. The room was nice, clean, and modern but small. Parking is free and that's a plus in that area. They have a shuttle on request to take you to other areas. They have no pool.

    3
« Just okay and definitely no frills »

We booked this hotel for the location. The staff was friendly but prior to my visit I had requested a room on the quiet side. Upon check in, I was told I was on Santa Monica Boulevard and to just keep my windows closed. I get that some decorator was trying for fifties moderne (or it hasn't been updated since the fifties) or some beach theme, but they missed that vibe. The room is shown below. Obviously, some guests and reviewers think it's beautiful. I would not stretch to use that descriptor. The linoleum or Pergo floors are cold and uninviting, the lighting in the room Is either fluorescent or LED, but nearly blue and don't light the room well enough to read a document, and the rooms are dark. I has to prop open the bathroom door with the chair to get extra light in the room. The pinpoint spots over the bed are like interrogation lights. My husband picked up the phone to call the front desk and it fell apart. All in all, it reminds me of a hospital or nursing home. As I said, I'm not here for vacation and it is convenient to where we are going. Would I stay here again? I don't know. I'm having trouble getting past the institutional decor (and I still have to sleep here). It's location is great, it is a very, very basic room, but it is clean and the front desk staff were pleasant. They also provided a fresh remote. On the up side, it's better than sleeping in an actual hospital.

    « Beautiful »

BEST Best Western I ever stayed at. Room looked brand new -- no cruddy carpet, nice decor. Parking garage is under hotel and off of the street. Some might find this a problem, I appreciated the extra security and convenience. Staff was also nicely accommodating regarding the full-day seminar our company held there.

    4
    « Business Trip »

Late check in was not an issue with the staff. The staff were professional. Room was roomy, comfortable and clean. Shower head was refreshing. Lack of coffee or tea bar was disappointing in the morning.

« Three night stay at end of 3 week trip »

Arrived after drive from Las Vegas. Courteous check in staff. First room was rather small and when we contacted reception we were offered a larger room. All very clean and air conditioning effective as it was rather hot. Beds comfortable. Disappointed that as it was a BW "plus" it didn't seem to have as many amenities as a plain BW that we had stayed in at Santa Barbara, ie, no pool or breakfast. Complimentary parking and wifi good and a good location to catch the blue bus to the centre of Santa Monica. All in all quite good.

    5
« Great value and next to IHop! »

This is a great little place to stay with a shared balcony on level 4 complimentary unlimited wifi great friendly staff the staff at front office really know their city (thank you ladies for the recommendation of chef ming Chinese takeaway) also the big bus which stops very near the hotel for $1 each adult one day and a complimentary shuttle downtown on the hour Monday to Friday!, they also offer a great taxi to get you Los Angeles International Airport from $29! happy staying everyone!

    3
    « Good value »

Good value hotel. Very comfortable bed and friendly staff. Free underground parking and high speed wifi. Good value if you want no frills basic! Only down side- Main Street & promenade over 1 mile away- bit of a walk but bus service runs straight past hotel.

    « Very comfortable »

My husband and I stayed here for a couple of nights whilst in Santa Monica. The room was big and the bed was very comfortable. The staff at Check In were polite. Location is good although quite a distance from the pier. However, they do offer a free shuttle bus to the pier, however we didn't use this as we had a car but it was nice to have the option. No complaints

    4
    « Good location »

The location is good for the beach area of Santa Monica as well as businesses. Very clean, comfortable rooms with a beachy decor and laminate flooring. The plantation shutters were also adding to the ambience. Great beds and pillows. The only noise came from the traffic. Our room was on the street side but we got used to that after the first night. So many other hotels charge for parking at about $35/day and have resort fees as well. Their lot was convenient and free and the IHOP next to it made it easy to grab breakfast or a meal since there were not many eating establishments close by. We found it very easy to get around from this location. The price was fairly high but compared with others closer to the water, we were not surprised.

« Costly No Frill Hotel »

Normally in US and specially LA you should carry your own car . The Hotel is not a good location like downtown or beach area. Costing approx Usd 220 per night is cheap as compared to Santa Monica and specially if you are travelling during the peak period of American Film Market . Its approx 3 km from Beach area and downtown which is 3rd street No much nearby yes you have wall green after two blocks and couple of restaurants like veggie grill etc Area is quiet peaceful but within the hotel room you can hear sounds of moving and also cars around all time. There are vending machines so for water or drinks in the floor . Around 12 km from LAX airport and super shuttle can make you reach at 15 usd something or you can take a taxi which may cost approx 50 usd there is a ihop resturant which you can use for breakfast which has egg as prime ingredient but nice and cozy Wifi though is free but doesnt work good at some part of your room and keep connecting and disconnecting and when asked by reception guys they say yes sorry its a problem we accept that Rest nice bed and tv with coffee maker etc

    4
    « Great hotel »

The service was great and staff was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is going in the area and want to save a little bit. The only thing I would recommend is maybe a hotel bar but other than that everything was good.

    4
    « Satisfied »

Hotel and room satisfactory. Got room on the quiet side of the hotel. Parking in kellar and breakfast in the nearby restaurant was OK. Few restaurants in the surroundings to the hotel. Walked down to the beach area.

    5
« High price, great quality »

You can't beat the location...Santa Monica, CA! Okay maybe you can, since it's not on the beach. At $200/night, I hoped for a fancier room. But the hotel was walking distance from the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, so I didn't need to rent a car. The staff is uniformly exceptional. This is a well-run hotel. I especially liked the Labrador Retriever puppy that came with my room.

    3
« Good clean, basic hotel »

This hotel is good for a business stay. I liked the room, it had modern furnishings and the bed was comfortable. It was very clean, and the staff was helpful. There is free underground parking, free wifi. There is no free breakfast.

    4
« Good hotel if basic, on a busy main road »

We stayed for four nights, whilst we explored Santa Monica, Beverley hills and Hollywood. Hotel was good, staff were helpful but facilities were basic and it is sited on a busy main road. There is a complementary shuttle from the hotel to the beach, or you can take a walk of about a mile.

    5
    « Great property »

This place is in a super location--close to 3rd street promenade and the pier. Rooms are small but very clean and the staff is very helpful! It is within walking distance to many things. We enjoyed our stay.

    4
« If you skip "fancy" this is the place »

We went for a hotel that gave us a clean room, good sleep, a basic fitness room and free parking. If those are your requirements you will like this hotel. Good service level and attention came with the price. We never tried the IHOP "inside" the hotel building but loves Cafe Zella for breakfast close by instead.

« Great room, great location! »

I give Best Western Plus in Santa Monica and Oceanside more than a 10 rating. The staff is amazing and very helpful. They make the process very easy to check in and out and the rooms are very clean and location is amazing. We will stay again very soon!

    3
    « 10/29 »

First time in a long time that I stayed at this brand, and was pleased with it. Good location, older, but has been updated. Room was very clean, furnishings were fairly new, modern/beach setting- well done and functional. Hotel has underground free parking, and a I Hop Rest. on site. I do not like the automatic closer on the bathroom door, seems like you are fighting it, too bad it doesn't open into the bathroom like most-a non issue. Staff friendly, and helpful, I would stay again.

    4
« Friendly, clean, no surprises »

This was a great place to stay for the price. The staff was friendly and helpful, the facilities were very clean and in working order. Everything went smoothly, from check-in to daily service, to additional requests, and check-out. Quick and efficient!

    5
    « Exceptional Hotel »

This location and price was outstanding. The room was fresh, clean and well decorated. The sliding glass door to an outside shared deck was a great surprise. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Santa Monica area. We will stay here again without hesitation.

    5
    « Great surprise! »

I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel, as I usually stay in high end hotels. I have allergies and I was really pleased with the cleanliness of the room. There is no carpeting or draperies and very little upholstery to harbor all the dust and grime found in many hotel rooms. The windows actually open and the air conditioner worked well. Just enough to drown out any noise. The hotel was very quiet and the bed was extremely comfortable. House keeping responded quickly and one woman was even nice enough to write some notes in spanish for me, so I could leave them in the room with my request not to take the allergy sheet I brought, off the bed. The bathroom had ample light, plenty of counter space and a good shower head with strong water pressure. There is a small mini fridge that is not stocked with candy bars and junk, so there was room for what I needed to put in there. The only problem I had was when I returned at 11pm one night, I wanted to buy something at the IHOP adjacent to the hotel but they were closed. I believe the IHOP is the hotel restaurant, so there were no other options other than getting back in an Uber and leaving again. I was completely comfortable in this room and look forward to my next visit to Santa Monica because I'll be staying here again!

    4
    « A Breath of Fresh Air »

After a week at the depressing Herald Square Hotel in New York this motel was like a breath of fresh air. The room was large, the decor light, bright & fresh. Buses were convenient to get around. Everything seemed to be a long way from everything else, but from what I can gather that is how it is in LA.

    3
    « Okay »

Spent 4 nights with my husband and 2 teenage boys we shared a twin room with 2 Queen size bed. Room was very clean and the beds comfortable. Room was small and situated on the 2nd floor unfortunately it was extremely noisy, you could hear a lot of traffic and the AC was very loud. Staff were excellent and very helpful, they have a shuttle service to the main shopping area during the week which is free except for a small tip for the driver, this service does not run on the weekends but there is a bus stop out the front. IHOP eatery was next door very handy and food was not bad. Other restaurants were a good 15 minute walk including a Wholefoods which you could buy anything you needed. Overall a nice place to rest your head if you don't mind a bit of traffic noise.

    3
    « Just Okay »

This Best Western is a bit pricey for what you get. The building is semi-updated, but feels a little worn out. The hotel is not in the heart of the shopping district of Santa Monica, but one - two miles away from the heart of town and the beach. The good news is that parking and WiFi are free. There is an IHOP on site and that about says it all.

    5
    « Modern & Economical »

I don't typically stay at Best Western hotels, however the Best Western Plus in Santa Monica changed my viewpoint. Modern rooms with a beach loft feel. Beds were comfy and room was super clean. There is also FREE parking on-site and a IHOP next door. The beach is about a mile away. I'd stay there again for business or pleasure.

    4
« Great Hotel, Fabulous Staff »

Excellent hotel for a quick stay. A no frills kinda place and you are paying for the location more then anything else. I was very pleased with the room highly recommend this place for a few days stay.

    « Good Location »

Our first hotel as part of a three week trip around the Western USA. Recommended to stay in Santa Monica and proved to be a good choice. Situated in mid-town, this hotel is clean and functional with excellent staff, with an iHOP restaurant next door for breakfasts (not free). We had a spacious, street facing room with a big TV, fridge, safe and free wifi. The hotel provides free underground parking and a free shuttle bus to Santa Monica seafront which proved useful. We stayed two nights which was sufficient, the aircon was noisy as was the bathroom extractor but didn't really detract from the overall experience which was positive.

    5
    « GREAT STAY »

clean close to city of Los angeles but far away to be quite and not crazy traffic jams wish we stayed longer good hotel with I Hop next door was convenient parking good underneath the hotel would stay again .

    2
    « Not a great bargain. »

Hotel is clean and comfortable but at 225 dollars a night after taxes you get no breakfast, no microwave, no laundry and a room the size of a regular BW and this is a plus. The location is two miles away from the beach but is right across the street from Santa Monica Car Stereo and Window Tinting, (best prices in town). Maybe that explains charging double what the room is worth.

    5
    « Comfortable, affordable spot »

Wish the room was bigger, but everything else was excellent. Very helpful staff; quiet; superb location, easy parking; clean room; nice lobby; would visit again; Also wish breakfast was included as it is in other best western chains.

    4
    « close by »

Clean and comfortable rooms, close to our destination. This hotel is right on Santa Monica Blvd. so it it close to the Pier and also close to my son who lives in the area. Centrally located to do whatever is on the agenda and within walking to many restaurants and especially the beach.

    4
    « Good clean hotel »

This is a good hotel. Rooms were clean, there was an Ihop next door which is handy & you get 20% off your bill beacuse you are staying in the hotel. The parking is free which is great. The distance from the hotel to 3rd street promenade isn't too bad to walk! But the number 1 bus stops right across the street and for a dollar it will take as far a venice beach with stops along the way including the pier.

« Hotel charged for extra nights stay that never happened. »

I stayed for one week at the Gateway Best Western Santa Monica and paid for the trip one month ahead of time online through the Best Western website. I reviewed my credit card charges and found that they charged me for an additional night's stay after my stay concluded. I contacted them and they said it was for taxes. Taxes were included in my initial bill. My conclusion is that they are dishonest at this Best Western. I do not recommend this hotel. At a previous stay, the Fire Alarm went off at 3:10 AM. We were scared and got dressed to evacuate the building. The alarm stopped. It went off again for 20 seconds before they silenced it. I called the desk, they said someone was smoking near a smoke detector. They never apologized for ruining a night s sleep. They are inconsiderate and dishonest.

    4
    « Decent enough! »

I would say the BW plus gateway is a fairly decent hotel. Rooms were clean, decor was OK. Not too impressed with the customer service at the front desk. Loved the fact there was an Ihop next door. Useful free parking. The distance from the hotel to 3rd street promenade isn't too bad.....we enjoyed the walk! Would stay here again.

    « Awesome hotel »

This hotel is our go to for Santa Monica. Reasonably priced, very clean, and having a refrigerator is awesome. Being on top an IHOP makes room service for breakfast very fast and a great menu to pick from for food. They leave a menu in the room so you always know what's available. It's always 10-15 minutes with the service, we couldn't ask for more. Their wifi is great, it was fast enough to watch Netflix on our computer. The door to the bathroom, at least in our room, can't be left open so we had to prop it open with one of the hand towels as a door stop. The fourth floor has access to a shared balcony with lounge chairs, which was a great touch. The fact that they have a shuttle if you want one for downtown is great, we just usually bring our own car so we haven't used it. I love that they are safety conscious and you have to use your key card to prove you are a hotel guest before choosing a hotel floor. We will come here every time we are in Santa Monica.
