Old, yes. Well kept, yes. Flaws, yea. Great value? 100% Staff was great, room was clean but clear signs of layers upon layers of paint. Undergoing refurbishment, but corners cut. Room was small, but that didn't bother me. Bed comfortable. Wi-Fi so so. Location was the best! Right off Powell for easy access to cable car and BART station. Would I stay again? Yes.

We really enjoyed our stay. Traditional building so not hide rooms nor does it have loads of facilities HOWEVER it is very friendly, the rooms are clean with crisp white cotton bedding and clean white towels. Free tea and coffee in reception 7-10am. 7/11 across the road did cheap hot dogs for breakfast. We found a Mexican called a matador 200 yards away on the opposite side of the road which had a great atmosphere and was good value. The historical tram cars departed from a stop 75 yards away, turn left out of reception and first left after 25 yards the stop was 50 yards up the hill on the opposite side of the road. You can pay on the tram $8 a trip to the piers. Is you want First class then don't book but value and friendly then all day long.

A great location, area around hotel devoid of homeless, we felt very safe even walking at night. A great gas fireplace to sit by and read with comfortable arm chairs and good lighting. Lobby was neat and inviting. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful.

I arrived very late (after midnight) and the lady on the desk was extremely pleasant and helpful when I checked in. Room was clean and very comfortable with a great shower after a very long journey - nearly 18 hours with stop overs. Centrally located, 7-11 over the road, wine/beer store next door. All reception staff were lovely to me, very friendly and helpful and let me keep my room for an extra hour longer than normal so that I could freshen up before my flight to Los Angeles. I'd probably stay here again if I visit in the future.

Very cozy, clean hotel in a very central location. Staff was very accommodating. the room was clean and comfortable, the airline lost our luggage, and the staff was available to receive it at midnight.

Previously when visiting San Francisco I stayed closer to Fisherman's Wharf but was amazed by this location and hotel. Visiting San Francisco with my 13 year old daughter this is a great place to stay. Amazing shopping within a block, the stop for the Big Bus hop on hop off Tour bus a few minutes away. A Theatre show we booked a 5 minute walk!

Visited here for two nights Room found dirty, loads of hairs and dust around the sink and on the tap from previous guests The worst thing having my room opened by someone at 7am without warning , no idea if this was a guest or member of staff because there was no knock before Completely unacceptable

Mr. Edward at the front desk was so friendly! It's a charming hotel. Has the old school vibe with a modern look and within walking distance of Union Square. I just wished it had a gym and a restaurant or bar. Otherwise, I had a pleasant stay.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. Close to many attractions. The place is old and worn. Room was tiny. Only enough room for one person in bathroom. Air conditioning was super loud. Sears was a good breakfast place. Cesarios was a small Italian restaurant with great food!

I stayed two nights at the Cartwright in August 2023. It was very nice and in a great location. It is an historic hotel so the rooms are not large and my bathroom was quite small. But the bed was comfortable, the room clean and everything in the bathroom worked perfectly. There was great water pressure in the shower and plenty of hot water. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is only 1/2 block from the Powell Street Cable Car line and a block and a half from Union Square. I plan to stay there again on future trips to SF.

We stayed here 2 nights, you seriously can't go wrong staying here. We got into SF early and they offered us luggage storage while we explored the city. We asked the man at the front desk if we could get a room with a view of something other than a brick or roof top which is normal for San Francisco hotels. Our room was on a top floor with views of the street, it was more than we expected. The hotel rooms are very CLEAN, hallways are pretty dark, bathrooms and rooms are small but what more can you expect for these old buildings. The location can't be beat, it is close to all transportation and within walking distance to union square. There is also a Walgreens and 7-11 across the street. During our stay everyone at the front desk were great, I would like to recognize Edward, Herold and Josh I did not get the gentleman's name who was there when we dropped off our bags they all went above and beyond. Not sure why the negative reviews from others, if your expecting a newly built modern 5 star hotel with suites I suggest you book another hotel. If your looking for a clean hotel with old time charm, in the heart of San Francisco and amazing staff look no further.

Worst so called hotel. I ever stayed in around the globe. Absolutely filthy and dark halls. Beds tiny and rooms like closets. What a hole. Beware. It's a run down hostel and that's being ,kind.

This is not your typical Best Western. The Hotel is classic and fits in with San Francisco architecture. The building is old but the rooms are up to date. The staff (Specifically Thai and Edward) were the best most helpful and kind people we have ever met at a hotel. When selecting a hotel online in San Francisco it can be hard with so many hotel names I've never heard of. We selected The Cartright by Best Western because of the BW name recognition but received so much more. The Hotel is located in the heart of San Francisco, close by all the tourist things to do and there is public transportation close by.. Stay here and you will not be dissapointed.

Terrific place with a great location, just off the Powell Street cable line and a block from a parking garage (usually expensive parking fees covered in the price of the stay). Clean, quiet room with friendly staff.

I had a one-night stay on the fifth floor of the Cartwright. I had a very late arrival and early departure, so I did not have an opportunity to see much of the hotel or its services. I had a corner room with a bay window facing Sutter Street. The room was good size, clean, and the bed was comfortable. Unfortunately, the bathroom was problematic. It was small and the mirror was set quite high so it wouldn't be useful for anyone under 5'6". There was very little shelf space to store toiletries. The room rate seemed a little high for a renovated building.

Room was great, staff was awesome. Manager really treats his guest like family, he truly cares about helping and making you feel welcome. Room had the old time feel, very historic, very clean room. Definitely stay here again if given the opportunity.

Very impressed with this hotel. Nice, clean rooms. The staff were friendly and helpful. A great location in San Francisco. Very close to Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown. Getting around was easy either by foot or public transit.

Excellent location, old but well maintained property, great people at the desk, only two things, just that a safety locker in the room and an electric kettle was missing, although they had a safety box at the reception. Complementary coffee in the morning and hot water dispenser at the lobby was a good touch. Great stay

This was a wonderful place to stay and a really cool building. It was in a great location with lots of stuff around Union Square within walking distance. The room was a bit small, but worked well for me and my friend.

I stayed here for two nights and loved this hotel. The location is super convenient to Union Square and also close to Chinatown and the Financial District. Space is at a premium in this hotel, an older building converted into a boutique hotel - the lobby is small, the elevator is tiny, and my room was quite small. But I knew this when I booked it, and was super impressed with how well the limited space is used. There's a very cozy lounge behind the lobby, complete with lit fireplace and a chess/checkers table, which would be the perfect spot to relax with a book if you're feeling cramped in your room. There is no in-house restaurant or room service, but there is a plentiful supply of coffee and tea set up every morning in an adjacent space off the lobby, and there are numerous restaurants including breakfast options a very short walk from the hotel. My room was cozy and nicely decorated. It had a tiny bathroom, just large enough for one person, with the bathroom cabinet & mirror on a side wall - but the mirror was on a mount and could be turned to face you. In addition, there was a space that looked like it had been converted from a small walk-in closet to an open closet area with a counter for storage, and a large lighted mirror. I thought they made a great use of the limited space in the room to make it completely functional, as well as cozy. One thing I found neither positive nor negative, but just a little odd, was that the toilet in my bathroom was not a "residential" toilet but rather a public-bathroom style toilet - the kind without a tank, but instead metal piping at the back and the kind of metal handle you usually flush with your foot when in public. It was weird to encounter that in a hotel guest room. The bed was very comfortable and I appreciated the reading lights built into the wall in addition to the side lamps. My only critiques were that the basic cable TV service was lacking (no channel guide, had to navigate through every channel and most channels were grainy), and that there isn't a lot of soundproofing - toilets flush loudly, and room doors close very loudly, and it was startling at times to hear that. However, I noticed several guests took care to close their doors more quietly in the later hours. Other than those two small negatives, I loved this hotel and its cute quirks, and would happily stay here again.

I really enjoyed this hotel. I found a lot of mixed reviews before I booked, but I had a positive experience. My room was clean and comfortable. The location was amazing, located just off of Union Square and a five minute walk to Chinatown. And the price was really good for what I got in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. I look forward to staying again.

The staff are top notch, friendly and welcoming. Honestly, the best staff I've had ever at a hotel. Every single time we left and came back they greeted us. They realized we were here for my dad's birthday and upgraded him to a suite and left a bottle of wine in his room. It made his day. The rooms were funky, and although not perfect were comfortable and well thought out. I love the historical touches. It's in a great area, close to Chinatown with lots of restaurants close by. We loved our stay!

After reading some of the reviews, we were a little concerned. But the hotel didn't disappoint. The staff are all so friendly and helpful especially Tai on reception. The room was a little on the small size, but that didn't bother us as it was only a place to sleep and the bed was so big and comfortable. The bathroom was quite small but again we didn't have a problem with it as the hotel was in such a good location and very reasonably priced. Everywhere was very clean. They do not provide breakfast but have complimentary tea and coffee every morning. There are plenty of places to eat near by.

I asked from an upper floor room during check in. One staff member was searching and a different staff looked at the screen and said none were available. The room was ok for one night. The bathroom is small and the toilet paper dispenser is awkwardly placed. The heater did not work nor did the USB ports except those on the telephone.

Great location and wonderful staff. It is an older boutique hotel, so rooms are tiny but cozy. We stayed in room 206 for the first 3 nights but were moved to a king suite for the final 2. The first room did not have a heater but Josh gave us a space heater and problem solved! The bathroom was quite small and had no vent but it was suffice. No noise from outside could be heard. Room 616-large! Bedroom with separate sitting area and much larger bathroom. Still no vent but window you could open. TV in both rooms. This room had a fridge. A lot of noise could be heard from outside but this was minimized by leaving the fan on the A/C unit running. Both rooms-VERY clean and beds are comfortable. WIFI works great. Each has a coffee maker. No ice machines in hotel but staff are happy to give you an ice bucket full of. But the staff here are really nice people and want to make sure you are satisfied. Hotel very clean. Staff courteous and helpful with information on things to do in walking distance, would have enjoyed a microwave in our room No problems during our stay. I would choose the hotel again if I were in the area in the future the price was very affordable

Small, but updated rooms in an older building, but with reasonable room rates in an otherwise very expensive city, accommodating staff, great location to explore San Francisco, lots of options nearby for dining and entertainment, (including a great little comedy theatre directly across the street)

Great location! It's in union square where almost all shops are located. Lots of cafe restaurant in the area. Staff are really really nice and friendly. Sir Ed was the one who assisted me and gave me some tips on where to go to. Thank you so much.

The room was extremely small, no refrigerator or microwave. The couch had threads sticking out of it. There was no thermostat for the ac or heat. It was an in window home unit ac. The plugs were extremely loose. It was dark, the carpet in the hallways were old. I'm not sure if they were going for an old fashioned look or not, but it just looked old.

for the price the hotel exceeds expectations, room was small but nothing too too small I could say average but it was well organized and furniture well distributed, I like it and would come back again.

Great location, close to amenities (bus, BART, Walgreens across the street, Trader Joes 5 blocks away), easy to get to touring sites. Nice ambiance in hotel lobby. Helpful staff. Rooms were clean. Very comfortable beds. Bathrooms are very small, but clean. Nice showering facilities. Would have liked a bathroom ceiling vent as bathroom became steamy after showers.

We stayed 2 nights at the Cartwright. While the management and customer service was awesome, the room was not. Especially for the price. There was barely any room except for the bed. The pictures of a king room are NOT what you get. I kept hitting my leg on the back corner of the bed frame, as the room to get in to the bed from that side was so small. Additionally, management had to be asked for ice. No vending machines. Coffee only in the morning. Also, there were numerous homeless people sleeping on the sidewalk across from the hotel. Parking is a block away, directions handed out are incorrect. While I appreciate the history of the hotel, I do not recommend a king room at this hotel unless it's for one person. I would not stay here again. There are multiple other hotels in Union Square.

I landed very early but was able to request an early check in - otherwise I'd of have to have waited 8hrs! Free coffee in the room was nice, as was the coffee down behind reception. Easy to get to Market Street / shops from the venue. Room was small and a little dusty. No full length mirror. No fridge. No bath. The lift was out for a few hours and I had to walk steep stairs to floor 5. No housekeeping - due to COVID (?) There's a lot of homeless in close proximity to the hotel.

An older building that saw a lot of hard use in decades past. Make it good looking, easy to keep clean, even preserving some of its vintage architecture. Equip it with many of the amenities that hotel guests like to have. And meet the budget of leisure travelers who don't have a company or employer covering the cost of the trip.

With a convenient location close to transportation and Union Square, The Cartwright Hotel worked out very well for my family and me. It's a small, comfortable, historic hotel with quick check-in and out and a very amenable staff. There was some street noise the first night of our 4-night stay, but not afterwards and new windows that will be installed should take care of any future noise. Excellent reading lights. Carpeting in the hall on our floor was a bit shabby but, otherwise, all went very well.

The location of the Cartwright hotel is perfect. From SFO, Bart and then 5mn walk to the hotel. Easy access to Cable Car and all buses to any destination. We spent 5 nights and loved it. All the staff is wonderful and they go the extra mile to help. Very friendly employees and clean rooms. Would recommend to anyone.

We stayed 4 days in the hotel and the room is small and a little bit old for the price paid. However, the location is incredible. It's near to restaurants, cable car, coffee shops, groceries, parkings, and others stores.

We stayed for three nights and the staff was immediately able to assist us with our requests. Edward in particular was a joy to speak to, and we looked forward to greeting him on our way in and out of the hotel. It was walking distance to many attractions, and conveniently located near many food spots. We sincerely enjoyed our stay, and appreciated the help from the staff, especially Edward who made it a memorable trip!

I stayed at the Cartwright for 3 nights. I was in San Francisco for a technology summit. The average per night price for the hotel was similar to other hotels in the vicinity. However, the amenities were below average. No breakfast or bottled water available. The rooms were not cleaned daily due to being under staffed

I cannot stand dishonesty & disrespect yet this is what I received from Mr. Kevin Vossen, manager at this hotel. I had a Travel Zoo voucher/credit for $109 toward this hotel (these credits never expire). Mr. Vossen & I talked on the phone & emailed as he was helping me redeem this since his team did not know how to (at this point he was kind). We traded several emails, I passed along the voucher, he quoted me a rate of $99/night + tax for the night we were choosing to stay (I have this in writing) & I said fine & gave my credit card to secure the booking. We did, indeed, stay but then I received a bill for $115. I thought this was an error & that perhaps his team didn't realize I had the credit/voucher which covered the room in full, but no, Mr. Vossen said a group had booked & rates had gone up & now he was charging me $215! I said you cannot do that, you shared/we agreed to a rate that I have in writing. He said he called & told me of the rate change which is completely untrue, he did no such thing. He insists I'm wrong & that he's right. Perhaps he's trying to recoup the $109 voucher/credit that I had by charging me double. Even in looking at rates for this hotel on several booking websites they range from $115 - $139 but somehow I magically received a rate of $215. I am now disputing this with my credit card company which is quite a pain. As for the hotel, it's fine. Basic rooms, odd/see through glass on the bathroom door so you can see whoever you're staying with using the toilet & although I requested a quiet room over 2 months prior to our stay & called a few days before to confirm our room/confirm a quiet room they put us in a loud room right on Sutter Street. The good-- it's a fabulous location in the heart of Union Square.

Quiet and clean room in this hotel the employees were very helpful and was located in a good part of the city. The bed was comfortable and was real quiet could not hear street noice or the other rooms

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Edward in particular is one of the nicest people. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a great location. Location is very close to numerous areas. The parking for 24 hours was extremely helpful.

Location was absolutely everything for this hotel but unfortunately it is a bit tired on the inside. The carpets, walls and general decoration is calming out for an upgrade. Stayed in room 604, you can hear everything through the walls (even the toilet flushing). Room was clean, bathroom was small in comparison to the rest but it was an ok stay. Staff were great on check in and there is free tea and coffee in the reception in the morning. The location really is amazing

This hotel is located in heart of San Francisco at union square. Place is neat and cannot beat the location. Management need to add some basic amenities such as washer/dryer and ice maker. Hotel staff are nice and courteous.

I needed a place to stay for a week in San Francisco and this place fit the bill. The hotel is historic and remodeled and everything was nice from the room to the bathroom. It is centrally located next to Union Square making it easy to get to shopping, restaurants, and public transportation. Some parts of Union Square have been sketchy during the pandemic, but the street the hotel is on seems to be mostly away from that and a nice bar is located right next door called Pacific Cocktail Haven as well, not to even mention all the excellent restaurants up the street and convenience store/pharmacy across the street. The staff was really friendly and made me feel very comfortable during my stay. The bed was pretty comfortable, not the best I've slept in, but nice. The only downside was there was no fridge in the hotel room, but I assume that is by design. The closet space was big and perfect for my luggage. I was planning to spend most of my days out in the city, so I didn't need much from my hotel other than a place to sleep and shower and this fit the bill. I chose BW because I enjoyed my stay at BW in Venice last year. I would return and recommend!

I was traveling last minute - 3 days notice and prices were crazy across SF. I saw the Cartwright and booked a room. It was recently remodeled inside the hotel room and the shower was great. Wifi was fast and free. The person at the front desk was very kind and helpful. It was quiet in the room and hallway. The location around is safe but be a little careful at night, just like anywhere in SF.

it's a quaint but cozy hotel. Building is obviously one of the old San Francisco buildings which has its charms and character. The room was neat, bathroom/shower is a little tight though, they could have used a little of the closet space to expand that bathroom a litlte bit. Overall a good stay. Edward at the front desk was very helpful!

If you're looking for a true San Fransisco experience this is the hotel for you. The Cartwright hotel is absolutely charming. Rooms have been updated with more of a modern touch but all public areas of hotel have a clean vintage appearance. Hotel is also in a great location with coffee shops, convenient stores and liquor stores just a few steps away. Area was also very safe and hotel was secured. When booking I suggest purchasing the upgraded king suite. This rooms is very spacious and comfortable. Perfect for small families offering lots of space and privacy. Staff is a also very friendly. Especially Edward who provided my family and I world class service! Thank you to all of the staff and management for a truly enjoyable experience.

I did not have a lot of time there, so went right to bed. Room was smaller than I was expecting, bathroom was clean, and nice, Bed was comfortable, but had to scoot all the way in to stay warm could not find a heater.

Rooms were small. Very old building. You can hear others walking and talking. Water pressure in the shower is too strong. Bathtub is broken. Smelly dark building. There was an older gentleman by the front desk cursing in tagalog on the phone when we were checking in. I thought that is very unproffesional. The younger gebtleman though was very helpful to us

I was given a parking permit by the hotel staff that was not accepted by the garage that they said I could park at. This forced me to find an alternative, more expensive garage to park. So I feel I was lied to and given a false permit. The hotel was also relatively noisy on the floor I was and the staff disturbed me with phone calls and door knocks more than I liked. My room was at least nice and clean and comfortable. There was no breakfast available though and I was under the impression it was part of the deal.

Love The old architectural design the location the cleanliness and the staff had a great customer service. They helped us check in fast guided us to the parking lot and allowed us to leave our bicycles in a safe spot. We will definitely stay there again in the near future.

I am a BW diamond member and when I opt to stay at a BW, I do so because I normally can count on certain basic amenities- specifically some kind of breakfast, and a microwave and refrigerator in the room. This had none of those items. That meant ALL meals had to be eaten in restaurants and there was no place to store or reheat leftovers. The room was so tiny that, when brushing my teeth, I had to lower my head under the bathroom mirror to spit into the sink! Right next door is a new modern Marriott with comparably priced rooms. The location is good but this is not what I count on when I opt for a BW.

Basically an overpriced Motel 6. Minimal amenities. The only upside is that it's reasonably central to most things you'd want to see visiting San Francisco. Rooms are small and dark, overcrowded, and no attempt has been made to make them feel upscale or vintage.

We chose this BW location based on price and access to public transit. Our room was small, but very functional. The small bath was ample for all daily functions. Bed was comfortable and our corner room provided nice views. Staff was helpful. We will stay here again.

Stayed three nights on a recent visit to the city. Room was clean and the GM Steve was patient, kind, helpful, and had a sense of humor. Will definitely pick this hotel the next time we travel to San Francisco!

We had a wonderful time staying at this hotel. The hotel staff were accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We loved the location and being close to everything we wanted to see. Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, the cable cars, food, shopping and city sites were right outside, it was fantastic! We highly recommend staying at this hotel if you plan to visit the city. The room and lobby were clean, the team there is friendly and you are close to everything!

As others have mentioned, services here are limited due to Covid. We knew that the hotel rooms were small, but the bathrooms really are unpleasant. The shower floor could have been cleaner, and the one time we tried to use the AC, we couldn't because it was full of mildew and immediately stunk up the room. We stayed 3 nights, so requested extra towels during our stay, and had to pile the used ones under the sink, since there was no other place for them. I liked the large closet for extra space since it was 2 of us with luggage. Bed was comfortable, and the only real noise was toilets flushing and occasionally dogs barking. Great location with many cafes and restaurants and a Trader Joe's within a 10-minute walk. Convenient to the BART, and trolley if it had been running. I would not recommend this place for more than 2 nights during covid. It may be better when times are normal.

Hubby & I stayed 6 nights during our trip to SF. Rooms are small, but very clean & front desk staff is attentive. Per COVID rules house-keeping doesn't enter room, during your stay, but you can request fresh towels/toiletries at the desk daily. There are no breakfast options onsite because of COVID, and no fridge/microwave in room, but plenty of great dining options nearby.(A credit towards breakfast should be offered) This may be a deal-breaker for some, but hotel is clean, centrally located in (Union Square) area of San Francisco and close to all transportation. Would recommend.

We stayed here recently to attend a ballgame and visit the city. It was so perfect! We ended up taking a cable car to the famed Buena Vista Cafe for breakfast. The Cartwright was clean, quiet and convenient and was right near Union Square making for a great stay!

The location at The Cartwright Hotel was perfect. Close to the Street Cars, China Town, Museums, and many restaurants. The bed was very comfortable and cozy. The view from our room was specular, especially at night. As we lay in bed we listened to real sounds of the city we never hear in SoCal were we live. Buses, horns beeping, street cars, people talking…it was an experience we will always remember.

Remodeled in 2017 it is more like a European Best Western hotel than a modern road side hotel. We loved this place. Price is very good for one of the most expensive city's in the world. A nice location for walking about or if you have business in this area of central SF. By US standards the room is smaller by European standards the room is large. The sitting area/bar with fireplace will be a great place post-covid for an after dinner beverage. Now, the bar is closed but we all look forward to better times. Highly recommended for people who prefer charm over replica hotel rooms.

The big plus for this hotel is the staff. It was built a long time ago (in my mind) and space in San Francisco is at a premium (I understand that). If you are tall (I am 6'0") my knees were very close to the sink when I sat on the toilet, the medicine cabinet (there was very little space to put your items) hung out over the sink too far and when I brushed my teeth, I could not lean over the sink. The tub is a very high "step over" tub, so if you are like the guy in the "walk in" bathtub commercial, you will have a problem getting in the tub. The room I was in was on the street side, and the sirens were busier than "Station 51 on Emergency" all night long (those poor firefighters). One other plus to this hotel was the location, close to many of the tourist sites I wanted to see. Also, because space is at such a premium, I would call to find out if the hotel has a parking lot for you to use (since I don't drive, it was not a concern to me).

There is so much charm and charisma at The Cartwright Hotel. It is an old building with old building quirks, so that has to be expected. Everything was clean and I felt very comfortable staying here. The staff was very friendly. The architecture of the building was fascinating to study.

As with most lower priced rooms in the city, the room was small. But that is what we expected and we didn't want to pay for a large room. I was impressed with how well they laid out and decorated a small space. The closet was turned into a closet and a vanity with a large light up wall mirror and a vanity counter. So now it was a dressing room! Great idea! There was a corner sitting seat, a large desk, small night table and a foot stool. All this in a small space so you had plenty of room to move around! It was very comfortable. Now, in all honesty, if you happen to be a very large person, the bathroom might cause you a problem. Although the shower itself was large enough, getting out and trying to dry off between a toilet and sink was difficult for us. We are both about 5'10" and 170lbs. But, you know, there is the rest of the room you could use :) Everything was clean and tidy. Bed was comfortable! We did not love the pillows, but we both are picky about that. All in all, we enjoyed our stay it feel it was a great value for the price. We will be back and high recommend it.

We have stayed in a number of Best Western Properties over the years and the Cartwright is definitely very unique from any other. After reading the reviews we were prepared for a small room and it indeed is. The bathroom is one of the smallest we have had in any hotel stay. The shower was adequate size to move around in and had plenty of hot water and pressure. We were on the third floor and the room was very quiet but a very uninspiring view of a white brick wall a few feet away. Fortunately the windows open so could get some fresh air into what might have been a very stuffy room although it does have a ceiling fan. There is a very nice fireplace and sitting area in the lobby area. Due to COVID restrictions the breakfast area is closed as well as the bar. The location is very convenient and the streets in the immediate area were clean and felt relatively safe. The staff is very friendly and helpful and help make up for any deficiencies of a 100+year old property. I feel if we were going to be in San Francisco for more than one night I might be looking for a hotel with a larger room that would be more comfortable but this worked out fine for a one night stay.

Horrible vacation. Extremely small and uncomfortable room. Nothing worked properly. The fan, the blinds, the Internet, the heater and very smelly. The room was extremely dusty which made it difficult to breathe. The last inspection the elevator house was 2013

this motel should have a zero-rating. the rooms are extremely small, smelly, old, and dusty. the fan, heater, frig, blinds, and internet do NOT work. the elevator inspection expired in 2013. I would spend $50 more a night and get a better place. I wasted my money and did not enjoy my trip at all.

This is our 2nd stay at the Cartwright. This one was a little different due to the Covid restrictions. Every employee we talked to was friendly. Always greeted us with a smile. We got a heck of a deal on the price. It was a smaller room than the last time. We spend mosy of our time out of the room so it was not a big deal. Room was very clean. Bed was very comfortable. Shower had great water pressure. Due to covid no daily room cleaning could be offered. We just had to go to the front desk and get clean towels whenever we needed them. We actually liked this new system. No Hotel employees can enter your room during your entire stay. We Love the location of the Cartwright. In the past we would hop on the cable car at the corner and head on down to the Warf ot stop off near North Beach. As it turned out, we really enjoyed walking everywhere. Just a nice 20 minute walk to the Ferry Building then a 30 minute walk to the Warf. We did this to avoid any steep hills. Chinatown is just a few minutes away. North Beach is also an easy walk. We love the Cartwright. It is just a great place to stay. WE travel to SF to be a tourist...so we never spend a lot of time in our room. We will return to the Cartwright again.

The manager, Kevin, has gone beyond and above his duties to help us out. This hotel is in a perfect location with best deals. I made this reservation for my son who has been a front line worker since Covid hit. He has not been able to take any time off till now. Kevin has been very accommodating in making sure my son has an enjoyable stay.

I loved my stay at the Cartwright. Loved that it has been here since 1913 and was once quite an elite place. Also that although it's been upgraded, it's not all modern and chi chi. I mean, a lot of the original architecture and charm is still there. My room was very comfortable, with a lot of nice touches (original dimming light, ceiling fans, bathroom door with frosted glass, little corner sofa, good reading lights for bed and plenty of outlets and USB ports, 2 sets of window blinds...one for reducing glare and one for full on blackout, nice shower with good water pressure, a little dressing area/closet is really sweet!, a perfect desk set up for working on the computer, which I had to do., strong wifi, etc) Best of all, my window could actually open...so rare these days...so I could get a bit of fresh air. Super convenient to all the stuff in downtown SF, at least everything that's not closed b/c of COVID. The staff was super friendly and accomodating. I think a lot of little touches are cancelled in these times of COVID (like I think they normally have coffee in the lobby), but even so, I really enjoyed my stay. The only 2 things I could complain about are the windows are really in need of a wash...extremely grimy... and I wish the TV were a "smart TV" so I could have watched Netflix or something. But never mind that....I'm a big fan of the Cartwright. I hope it and the other historic hotels in SF can survive the COVID times. I loved it!

Really enjoyed staying here! The staff were wonderful and so were the rooms! Perfect location, close to everything! Liquor store next door, 7-11 and Walgreens across the street. Great prices too. Free parking on the streets starting at 6pm Saturdays until Monday morning! Would totally stay here again!

Edward and Kevin were amazingly helpful even though we (my partner and I) made a mistake on one of our room arrival dates (we had 2 rooms reserved). They worked hard and were very accommodating and friendly.

My wife and I took a 4 day trip this month to San Francisco and I found the Cartwright Hotel online. It is older in appearance and the rooms are small but the staff was extremely helpful and polite. We were given tips on what is open and what is closed since we have not been in the area in several years. I would recommend this hotel for the guest services and the staff.

The employee who's working by the time I arrived there from the airport from my midnight flight from Alaska helped me to the extent that he guided me on where to go and explain a lot of things and handed me a city map to make my stay more easier since It was my first time to go to San Francisco. Looking forward to be back and stay again to that hotel.

The hotel is super clean. Staff is excellent and the location is sensational!! The hotel is in the financial district with easy access to shopping and eating. The tour bus stop is only one block away. My family and I will be back!

I have stayed at the Cartwright regularly for nearly 50 years; it has always been my hotel of choice in San Francisco. It is a funky, nice, old hotel. But as of September, they are raising their rates to $800 a day. It is impossible for the hotel to be worth this much, and I will stay there no more. Even the most luxurious hotels in downtown San Francisco do not charge this much.

This hotel turned out to be a great place to stay. It's an older hotel but the rooms have been updated with modern conveniences and decor. The lobby and accompanying rooms are beautiful and accessible. The best part was the staff. Every staff member was welcoming and friendly. Front desk manager Kevin is the best. He provided recommendations on local businesses and also made room recommendations for my next visit. I have decided to make this my go to hotel every time I visit family here. It's just a safe and welcoming haven in a big busy city.

It's all about location. This hotel is in the middle of Union Square, very well located, with a lot of things to do nearby. This hotel itself is not a modern, well-decorated hotel, but it's really good for the price. The room is small, but well decorated with lots of lights, the bed and the shower are good, however the water leaks through the shower when bathing. Despite this, it was a great stay, the staff are really friendly and communicative. We spent two nights at the hotel and everything was perfect. So, if you are going to San Francisco and don't want to spend a lot of money on a hotel, I recommend stay at the The Cartwright Hotel. You will get what you paid for.

The people who work at the Cartwright hotel were absolutely wonderful! I am traveling as an essential worker and very anxious about covid. It was very clear from the start that they were following all protocols for our safety. They were able to accommodate my request for an early check-in and a late check out when figuring out my traveling arrangements. They truly made my stay here enjoyable and I would most definitely stay again in the future.

The Cartwright Hotel is a wonderful place to stay in SF. You honestly cannot beat the location, a few blocks from the BART station and muni bus locations. You are also close to Chinatown, Union Square, and literally everywhere else in San Francisco! The rooms are small but cozy. (It is an older hotel, but don't let that scare you away. Your room will be a lovely mix of old world charm and modern amenities.) The bed had a pillow top on it and it was very comfortable. Obviously COVID-19 has changed everything, therefore we didn't get the room refreshed everyday by housekeeping, but that is not a huge deal for me. They made sure we knew to come down to the front desk and ask for anything we needed, more towels, toiletries, or anything else. Kevin at the front desk was an amazing host! He was genuinely kind and caring towards us as guests during our stay. He made us feel safe and welcome while visiting San Francisco. He is a fantastic employee and was even kind enough to make small talk with us and gave us some interesting information on the city itself. This is also a hotel that welcomes your dog if you happen to have one with you while traveling!

Excellent location and very clean place to stay. Helpful staff. Maybe the a/c unit could be less noisy, it would be perfect. This hotel keeps an old fashion style, with high ceilings, and doors. Rooms are not so big , but enough to walk around.

No parking, hallways were dirty, room floors were dirty and there was pubic hair all over the place in the shower. TV remote didn't work and all night long you can hear everyone around your room. Find someplace else!

Wife and I spent four relaxing nights at the hotel. Old historic hotel with a lot of charm. We had a room in the back of the hotel on the seventh floor which was very quiet. Not much of the view but away from the street noice. Location is perfect and walking distrance to China Town, Ferry Building and Union Square. Front desk guys were excetional and any thing we needed for the room they were quick to get. Felt very safe in the hotel due to Covid-19.

Promised a refund in writing by general manager Steve Viscio, but then he refused to honor his written promise. We travel to San Francisco most months but definitely will not be using this hotel ever again.

Location, Location! Just a block from Union Square, The Cartwright Hotel puts you right in the center of San Francisco's downtown area. Great restaurants & shopping within easy walking distance The hotel was built back in the early 1920's and that old charm is still an asset. Since we were only going to be there for one night we opted for a room on the sixth floor with two twin beds. Have to say these were the most comfy small beds I've ever slept in. Room size was small but perfect for two people for just an overnighter. For us, the Best Thing about this hotel was the front desk staff. The two lovely ladies that checked us in were marvelous! Made you feel like you were visiting with family....just the sweetest, and a real asset to this hotel! Lots of hotel choices in SF, but really happy we picked this one. We will be back in the near future.

This is an old, historic hotel that has been renovated. We had a quick two-night trip to San Fransisco and I had BW points to use, so I really wasn't too picky with the hotel. With that being said, the rooms are tiny, and the bathroom even smaller. They are nice and renovated and clean, but very small. We were out and about so it wasn't a big deal because we weren't spending much time in the room. If you plan to relax a lot and be in the room, I'd pick a different hotel. The hotel itself is very charming and has a lot of history. The staff were very friendly, and it's in a great location. I read the other reviews of complaints of being noisy. That did ring true for us. We just turned on white noise and that helped.

I have stayed in many best western hotels and i know this hotel is on prime location but nothing like the pictures online. Noisy, middle of the night you can hear people were screaming on the road , very thin walls. Room was very tiny which is no problem but very very dirty and furniture's looks cheap, hard floor was very dirty that you can not walk barefoot. Hair was on the bathroom floor, Could not use the shower due to some funky smell. Room door was chipped off from inside. Elevator is small that fits 4 people, makes loud noise going up and down, and permit has been expired in 2013. i was on 8th floor, hall ways are very narrow that fits luggage cart only. If you are best western ELITE member do not expect any elite recolonization. Did not offer bonus points or snacks bag when i ask for water, desk clerk said there is refrigerator help your self. Very poor customer service.

Excellent location, close to so much. The room was small as already mentioned in many reviews, but it was cozy and comfortable. The staff is outstanding and helpful. I just wish they served breakfast.

noisy and impossible to spend a night sleeping. As weel as the noise from street and the internal noise from other room. the noise insulation is clsoe to zero which is unacceptable when you pay over 300USD per night. Really unacceptable

I stayed in a queen room which was small but spacious enough for just me. However, the bathroom was entirely too small. The shower did not suit my 6'4" frame and I literally could not sit on the toilet, this is not an exaggeration. There was some dog food found on the floor of my room, likely from a previous guest. I'm glad they are pet friendly, I love pets; however, I would think they could clean a bit better. The staff was not really that friendly, they were accommodating to my needs for staying at the hotel but they didn't smile much and seem put out or tired most of the time. The mattress did not allow for a very good night sleep but that could have been me in fairness.

We were unsure what to expect when we booked online and read some of the TA reviews. But we loved it. Quaint hotel with old style charm. Rooms are small but all you need. Lovely and modern too. And all in a great central location. Would highly recommend

During the entirety of my three day stay, the elevator was broken. Coupled with the not quite clean room, and toilet that would flush for 3-5 minutes before stopping, and beds that slant down putting creating a less than stellar sleeping experience, I would probably suggest a different hotel if looking to stay in SF.

Great location, clean with a great lobby and fireplace lounge that makes up for the small rooms with no views. Great place to stay for Curran Theater. Lots of restaurants nearby. Easy walk to Chinatown. Right on the Powell St Cable car line.

Although the rooms are small, this hotel is located in the middle of the city. Walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and more. Conveniently located in front of a Walgreens and Starbucks. I will definitely be back!

The Cartwright's friendly, accommodating staff, its fresh, clean, well-appointed rooms and great location for touring helped make this mini family reunion a pleasure we'll not soon forget. Our stay was affordable (thanks to not having to pay that pesky "resort fee" we found listed at other hotels we considered) but we didn't feel deprived in any way!

Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Rooms are very small but cozy. Bathroom could be bigger. Very clean. Alot of extra room behind the lobby. They could have breakfast available there's plenty of room, there's a place to have a bar and possibly a restaurant for that matter. We close to everything. We enjoyed our time.

The website and photos make the hotel seem "quaint"- the REALITY is old, broken down, dirty with tons of broken handles/doors, etc. First day there- received a notice of "emergency plumbing issues" and the water would have to be shut off.

The Cartwright is in a great location. Only a couple of blocks walk from Union Square and Powell St station. The staff were very friendly and happy to help with anything. The rooms are smaller than your average hotel room but very well set out and modern. The bed was very comfortable. If you want a delicious but cheap meal head to King of Thai Noodles!

Let's be honest...it's an old building. There's too much BROWN. Don't expect to be greeted at the curb, either. But the staff is competent and friendly. The neighborhood is safe enough, and the location is fantastically convenient to all of the Union Square area delights: shopping, restaurants and bars, and entertainment venues. But to be a true Best Western PREMIER COLLECTION hotel, it really needs work. Lobby area is nice, but under-utilized...there's a beautiful bar behind the front desk area that sits in the dark, unmanned. They could serve guests breakfast there, but they don't. They could have a 5:00 happy hour mingle, but don't. There is way too much dingy-ness and darkness in the corridors. Could be brightened up with better lighting and paint! But they seem undecided whether to be a boutique hotel or just inexpensive rooms for travelers on a budget. C'mon, BW, you can do better! This place has potential!

This smallish hotel is even smaller than it appears in photos but it did not bother me. I had managed my expectations. Best Western has done well to keep the hotel's old charm. I had reserved a boutique queen; it was small but ok. It was spotless. The first and second things I check upon entering any room are the bath towels and the bed linens and the room did not disappoint. The towels were fluffy and new and the linens crisp and clean. One evening, I soiled the linen a bit with food. I've experienced housekeepers in 5-star hotels who would simply ignore this. I was pleased that Cartwright's housekeepers knew well to change my linens even when not told to do. All bathroom fixtures were new and shiny but they chose designs that were in keeping with the hotel's overall character. Shower was strong, toiletries ample. A bonus was a walk-in where I was able to spread my luggage open. It would have been a tight squeeze if I'd have had to spread my luggage open in the room itself. Staff and friendly, especially the guy in concierge. Unfortunately, I did not catch his name. The hotel does not serve breakfast or room service. But there is a 24-hour diner (Lorie's) and Walgreens a few steps away and a 7-11 across the hotel. This is the best location for shopping! It is just one corner away from Union Square. And if you wish to venture farther, there are a lot of options nearby from the tram just a corner a way to the BART which is around a 7-10 minute walk. It is also a bus route.

Staff are super friendly and helpful, which counts for a lot. The location is just off Union Square, so if that's important and you're traveling with your pup, this could be your place. The building still retains the charm of the Edwardian era (moldings, fireplace mantle in the lobby), updated with contemporary furnishings that are a bit tired around the edges, but cozy and comfortable nonetheless. We had a king room (no carpet) on the second floor in the back of the building with an outside wall facing an east vacant lot that was overgrown with greenery, which was very quiet, cool (no extra blankets in the room), and very small, as was the bathroom. Rooms in the front are larger, but face Sutter St., so they will be noisy, but this is the city and an old building. If you just need a place to sleep, which we did, our room was fine, but it wasn't a cozy one I'd like to hang out in. There is parking nearby, but we chose valet, which was just $10 more, and definitely a reasonable convenience fee.

The hotel staff was excellent, smiles on there faces, efficient, knowledgeable all around a great place to stay. The rooms were smaller than most hotels but very cozy. The location was perfect for walking to just about anywhere you wanted to go. There are several good restaurants within a block of the hotel. There is also CVS or a Walgreens with a block if you've forgot something. If your not into walking up or down hills this hotel is perfect. When leaving the hotel if you go left Macy's, Cheesecake Factory and Union Square are three blocks away.

The Cartwright is one of the best hotels in Union Square. A century old property completely updated for the 21st century: maximum comfort at a minimal price. Rooms are small but well appointed. Every thing you need is here and in working order. Although located on a busy street my room was quiet, no white noise required. Overall a great experience--I look forward to a future stay.

Very old charming building, clean rooms, wonderful helpful staff. Bed was very comfy. Bathroom was updated but very small. Very noisy outside and in the halls as other guest stagger in at all hours. Being a light sleeper it was difficult to sleep. Unfortunately it wasn't the hotels fault that other guests are very rude with yelling from one end of the halls to the other at 2:00 am.

The hotel was nice but the neighborhood was very noisy at night and you could hear it clear as day from the hotel rooms. I woke up every night to people screaming and loud truck noises multiple times.

The facility itself is aging but in good repair. All rooms equipped with tremendously small and unsafe bathrooms. You must step around toilet and sink to enter shower. No grab bars or safety precautions. Otherwise, a good, clean hotel room with great staff and quality internet access included. The linens were quality, bed very comfortable and plenty of lighting and outlets available. Dogs are welcome here, and I did hear several dogs barking throughout my stay which is rather unpleasant to wake up to.

Overall accommodations were very nice. This is a small, older hotel in the heart of SF so getting around by Uber or Cable Car works best. The room was a bit small ( we knew that in advance and expected that from an older hotel), the room was clean and served the purpose for a one night stay. Location is great, recommed cable car or uber for getting around. Staff was very nice and helpful.

Just what I was looking for in a hotel! I did not need any bells or whistles, just a cute quite room to relax after a long day at work. Convenience to a 24-hour diner, 7-Eleven & Walgreens, PLUS restaurants literately 300ft down the street, in the heart of Union Square.

I stayed at this hotel for 29 nights. Not only is the hotel in a prime location, but Mr. Quintin Fortune and the entire staff were warm, friendly and professional. They took care of ALL of my requests and were very gracious. I look forward to returning.

The hotel was not the most modern. The building was old, but renovated. The beds where comfortable and the bathroom nice. The room was clean, the staff was very nice and friendly and the location was perfect.

If you are having a work trip to San Francisco and need to be in a convenient location to the downtown area, this hotel is a good choice. It is important to note that it is not convenient to many of the more touristy-areas so families may not want to consider. The rooms are small, but neat, and good for one to two travelers at a time.

Small but very efficient room. Excellent bed with night tables on both sides, including accessible electrical outlets and USB plugs. Good desk and desk chair. Easy chair in corner. Walk-in closet with big, lighted mirror, a nice surprise.

DH and I stayed at Hotel Cartrwright for nine days during family event. Staff at Cartwright were beyond wonderful. They were friendly, accommodating, and helpful. Lobby was perfect for all of our family meeting up and getting together. Location ideal for Financial District. We could walk to so many places, including the Ferry Station, Union Square, shopping, restaurants, and attractions easily. Rooms were on small size, but our room had a large walk in closet that served as a dressing room. I cannot say enough about the customer service we received throughout our visit. Highly recommend this hotel.

The charming sweet made us feel like we were back in time during this visit. The staff were great! Friendly Rene greeted us every time we walked thru the door. Just steps from more shopping than one can handle, we really enjoyed our stay at the Cartwright.

Frequent traveler 96 room nights so far year. First time at Cartwright hotel best western. Extremely disappointing. No breakfast as claimed in website than after check was wrongly accused of smoking unprofessional and not valid. They must give house keeping bonus to make claims of guest. Never stating here again. It's not the issues of false claim but the way it was handled unprofessional and no guest concern.

In a great section of SF, walkable to tons, easy access to Union Sq and the Curran. Lots of restaurants, uber / taxi accessible. Fantastic customer service. NOTE: No AC in front rooms, updated old building, small bathrooms, comfortable rooms.

If you are looking for a hotel that is centrally located in SF and close to transit options, look no further than The Cartwright Hotel, Union Square, BW Premier Collection. The front desk staff were friendly and made me feel welcome! The lobby was super nice and so was my room.

This hotel was in a great central location. Walking distance to BART station, cable car and several bus stops and shops within Union Square. Due to the location however, street noise is guaranteed at all hours (traffic, late night garbage removal and delivery trucks, people shouting). Hotel is only 6 or 7 floors high so I don't think being higher up will help much with noise. No air conditioning - if you open the window, the noise from the street will be worse. The room got pretty stuffy in October; it would be hotter or unbearable in the middle of summer. Bathroom sink is tiny (half-sized) so it was hard not to get water everywhere; also not enough hooks/racks to hang towels in the bathroom. I would still stay here though due to the location. Maybe I would consider staying elsewhere in the summer since there is no air conditioning. PROS - Location, walking distance to public transportation, Union Square shops and convenience stores, friendly staff, reasonably priced for the area, clean room, nice coffee/tea area on the main floor for guests. CONS - Location is in a busy, noisy area near a street intersection. No air conditioning. No breakfast or food service aside from coffee/tea bar on the main floor.

My wife & I stayed for 4 nights at the Cartwright and loved every minute of our stay. The room was clean and modern. Bathroom was large enough and all fixtures worked perfectly. The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. We will definitely stay in this hotel again.

Rene the concierge went above and beyond to help us with unloading our luggage and finding us parking in a very busy area in San Francisco - he started our visit off on the best foot! The rest of the staff we interacted with were just as exceptional. The room was comfortable, modern, quiet, and clean, and steps away from everything we needed to get to for this trip. Would stay here again!

From the second I arrived to when Ieft, the service and friendliness of the staff was appreciated. They answered any questions and gave recommendations. I love historic buildings and this one has nice character. Plenty of cozy areas to sit in the lobby area - a great spot to plan out the day. The rooms have been updated and look like the photos on the website. Modern decor and smartly furnished to make the most out of rooms that are small. The room was spotless! There was a window ac unit which I didn't need but liked that the other windows opened to get some cool fresh air. The location was great and a quick walk to cable cars, buses, & the BART.

I was in room 212 and the room had a view over a brick wall 2 feet away. The frame of the bed was of inacceptable quality : a plank of wood on a cheap iron frame. Very disapointed by this Best Western charging $176 for a night. Lobby looks nice but the bucks stops here. Carpet in hallway should really get replaced. On the other hand, the location is good. I have attached pictures of the view and of the bedframe.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! it was within walking distance of many attractions. The staff was very friendly and acommodating. We were even offered a bottle of champaigne to celebrate our anniversary. The management went above and beyond to assure we had everything we needed, including local recommendations. We would definitely recommend this establishement to our friends and family.

We stayed here on our first night in San Fran, and the US. We were a bit apprehensive after a gruelling 20 hours on and off planes , missing flights, lost baggage, too small hire car. But we found this little oasis and we were so glad that we had good beds to sleep in. We had one small hiccup, which wasn't their fault but our travel agents, we hadn't confirmed rooms so our son and daughters room had a queen bed. Without blinking an eye Eli mived thwm to a room with 2 beds. The rooms were very clean, very comortable and spacious. We would have liked a bar fridge to keep our water and beer cool. The staff were awesome and we were right in the heart of the city with good transport and shops, also close to Fisherman's Wharf. The view wasn't great from the 7th floor but the windows did open for fresh air.

We stopped in room 218 and it looks nothing like the pictures shown. This hotel isn't old it is dilapidated poorly maintained and poorly presented particularly the bathroom. There is no way a bathroom that looks like this can be cleaned properly. The rooms are very small by any standard. Spend your money on somewhere else. The only reasonably good thing about this hotel is the location and as such could and should be so much better.

This hotel has character and personality. There's a lot of history behind it. It was quaint. The decor was amazing. It was an experience we have never had -- such charm. The lobby, the sitting room downstairs by the fireplace -- we felt like we were in a different era. The doorman is quite a character. The girls were cheerful, friendly, and informative.

This is exactly the hotel to use as a base for exploring San Fransisco, it is handy to Union Square and a 20 minute stroll to the Ferry Building. We spent 4 nights here and ate at a different place for every meal, there are that many choices around the area. A very comfy bed and a great shower were what we needed and had. The staff were very friendly and helpful. After we checked out our bags were stored for us, we also used the lounge when we got tired of sightseeing until our 7pm transfer pick up. Thanks guys for that. I would recomend this lovely old hotel as a place to stay in the heart of San Fransisco.

Location is prime especially for the price we paid. We were traveling with a pet so we booked this place knowing our pup can stay free of charge. It's hard to be picky when you are limited and others charge almost the cost of another hotel stay for having a dog. Friendly staff, clean room, and a comfy bed. Would definitely stay here again.

This hotel is very dated, but I believe it's over 100 years old. We definitely didn't expect some 5 star hotel but in my opinion it's really cute, like a little boutique store! Everyone has different experiences and I respect others reviews but I'm thankful we had an amazing stay here. We stayed for two nights and the staff were very nice and welcoming. The room/bathroom was VERY small...I mean REALLY SMALL, so if that's going to bother you, I say stay elsewhere. We had zero noise issues, the elevators worked, our room was cleaned and we were allowed to leave our rental parked for 15 mins while we unloaded. So I'm SUPER thankful they allowed us to do that considering we had to drop off our rental directly after checking in! Union Square is like a block away so that was nice! We walked everywhere and didn't have to catch a Lyft, so that was really nice. If you're staying a week or so in San Francisco, I wouldn't stay here for comfort reasons and if you wanted a gym. It's a hotel I would stay at for 2 to 3 nights. Happy Traveling!!!

We were visiting our son who is attending USF for grad school. We chose The Cartwright because of double rewards with Southwest credit card (because we want to visit him often!!) : ) It turned out to be a win/win decision. The hotel is in a great location. The lobby is nice, although the furniture needs to be cleaned or replaced. Each and every employee is friendly and helpful. The only exception was a lady at the desk the day we checked out - and we never dealt with her, only witnessed how she treated a few other guests. Housekeeping was awesome. The window AC did a wonderful job. The bed was super comfortable; our bed was not good enough our first night back home.

Best location for experiencing San Francisco! This hotel is over 100 years old, so it's not another one of those ultra modern cookie-cutter hotel chains. Nothing wrong with ultra modern, but we like to experience the history of the places we visit as much as possible. Don't get me wrong, some old hotels are dives and should be avoided. Not the Cartwright, though. It's old, it's aged, yes, but it's lovingly preserved. Our room was tiny, the bathroom even more so, but we enjoyed coming back from a day of adventures and lying on a soft, comfy and clean bed. Most newer hotels have dark bed covers, yuck! All white bed linens at the Cartwright. You can't hide icky things with white. If you are claustrophobic or a large person, you will be uncomfortable. If you like old buildings and the quirks that come with them, you will enjoy the Cartwright. We sure did!

Friendly staff. Very nice period hotel. Free coffee and tea in the morning. No continental breakfast like the other BW Hotels. Room & bathroom are a bit small but comfortable. Room has no safe. The closet has a vanity table, chair & large lighted mirror. There are plenty of socket and usb outlets. We stayed on the 8th floor. View is the brick wall of the next building. Parking $42.00 self & 52.00 valet per day. We like the sound of the cable car passing and the sound of the bell ringing. Overall - good stay.

This hotel is in a great position for everything in San Francisco. Tram stop at corner of the block, hop on hop off bus stop 2 min walk away, shops in Union Square, restaurants etc. When you walk into The Cartwright you are taken back in time. Loved the lights in the hotel corridors. The staff are lovely, especially Renie (the doorman). Nothing is too much bother for him. Room was bigger than we expected for San Francisco and had everything we needed. Very clean. Would def go back.

I am starting my review by stating the fact that this is a boutique style hotel in an old building. That is its charm. I've read some of these reviews and it seems they must be used to the brand new big hotels. This boutique style is similar to the many many ones you will find all over Europe. Smaller rooms but with a lot of history and different uses. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Noise did transfer into the room easily, but that is common in these style of hotels. However, there are things BW can do to make that better and I would be willing to provide a consult if they ask. I slept well regardless, and the staff was great to me. The price was high, but that is San Francisco. SF is way too high and it really doesn't warrant the prices across the city, but obviously people are paying it or they couldn't demand it. It is the same when you go to Paris and an event is happening you will pay through the nose for a shoe box. Bottom line if you enjoy a little historical ambience that comes with an older building then the Cartwright is good to go. I had a nice ceiling fan which I really enjoyed sleeping under and the room amenities were good. The room was tight, but I'm not staying in the room to hang out anyway. There was no room safe so take appropriate action. I had 2 wash clothes, hand towels, and bath towels which is all I need. Some hotels don't give you wash clothes or more than one of each. The location is right in the middle of the action in union square so you don't have far to go to find something to eat or Chinatown.

Staff were ok, but the rooms were very small although the room was clean the noise of peoples closing doors was very loud and there were people fighting in the hallway and banging doors till the early hours of the morning

We arrived in San Francisco and were delighted with this hotel. The staff were helpful and the rooms were clean. Not the biggest rooms but they had an olde worlde charm. You can lie in bed and hear the cable cars as they rattle past and then you know you're really in San Francisco! A great location for all the major sights- I really liked the free tea and coffee in the morning too!

Price of the hotel was to high. Very poor front desk helpers. Rooms were real small clean but small. you had to pay %45.00 to park your vehical in THEIR garage. When asked were my room was I recieved second floor and that is all that was said.

Had a good stay here - it was easy to find and only about a 10-minute walk up a moderate slope from the BART station. Tourists will like the proximity of the cable cars, shoppers will enjoy being near the heart of Union Square, and everyone will appreciate that the hotel isn't in the Tenderloin (although I did see a few "interesting" characters around later at night, so keep your wits about you). Staff was nice. Room was a decent size, very quiet, and more modern than you would expect from the exterior of the building (although the corridors have old-timey fixtures that maintain the character of the place). Would stay here again next time I'm in town!

We stayed at the hotel for three nights Room was very small but the position is good if you want to visit the city without a car. Receptionist not very nice. Overall a good review considering that we are in San Francisco

The staff where the only bright part of our stay. They were very nice and understood the issues with their own hotel. The rooms were smaller than in NYC the bathrooms were so tiny you had to step over the toilet to get in the shower. And the most confusing of all was the glass door that was slightly frosted from the bed to the bathroom. Sharing this room with a partner or anyone is not really an option unless you like to be “very close” to each other's business.... the walls and doors are also so thin you can chat with your neighbors. The room had paint falling off the door and walls. Our first rooms smelled so bad that we had to be moved. We were booked for 3 nights but requested a refund after the first night. If you are looking for comfort, privacy and a good nights sleep it's my opinion that this isn't the right place.

This is in the Best Western Premier collection and describes itself as a Luxury Boutique hotel. We would rate it as 3-star, neither luxury nor boutique. The staff are pleasant but the whole place looks dingy, with dated decor and dim lighting. The bathroom was the smallest we have ever come across: to get to the shower you had to step across the loo.

If you're ok to stay naked with construction workers staying in front of your windows only from 9am to 3pm....that's perfect. At the reception, they can change your room, but not today. "They are good guys, they work here for about 6 months...so you won't have any problem with them". Have fun, elsewhere Location is fine, Tiny room, clean...but no natural light and no elevator.

Had a great stay at this Best Western Premier Collection. I am happy with the product and service I received and I have no complaints about the hotel. Every staff member is kind and caring and the building, lobby and rooms are very authentic & classy. Great WiFi, free delicious coffee in the morning and the beds are so comfortable.

The Hotel Cartwright was a great hotel close to Union Square. The staff were always courteous and professional and assisted where ever they could. We would not hesitate to stay there again if we went back to San Fransisco

I have stayed here at this hotel a number of times over the last year for business, and I have always found it to be an excellent choice. The staff is always very helpful and accommodating, especially the manager Edward. While the rooms might be a bit small, I think they are cozy and comfortable because they are always clean and well kept. It is a favorite of mine when coming to SF.

Our family had a great experience at the Cartwright, upgraded at check in resulting in a suite. Nice outlook onto the street. Clean rooms, friendly staff, great housekeeping! At night a little bit noisy but this is to be expected based on the central location.

Very close to all the hot spots in San Fran. Great service. We stayed two nights. We used the valet parking service. We ate at Sears Fine Eatery and a pizza place the next block over. We purchased coffee at the 7-11 across the street. We had a pleasant visit and will be back.

The staff at the hotel were very welcoming and Rene in particular was very helpful in recommending a good place for breakfast (Roxanne's). The room, although quite small, was very cosy and spotless. I had requested a quiet room and they did not disappoint. The bathroom was pristine and, while also very small, it was still very functional. I don't mind small spaces when I'm staying overseas because I try to spend most of my time out and about seeing the sights. The location of this hotel is also great: very close to one of the cable cars, a short walk to the shopping area and hop on hop off bus, and right across the road from a 7-11 convenience store.

The hotel is right in the middle of everything that a visitor might want. You can walk to most local eateries or hope a trolly. Staff are really friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a historic building, which means there is no air conditioning in the building. High speed wi-fi is provided but because it is unsecured it is very congested and slow.

I loved the location and historic feel to the Cartwright Hotel. It has old photos and advertisements framed in the lobby for the building when it was originally built which were fun to look at. Staff were very nice and gave good recommendations. My girlfriend and I thought the room was on the small side and bathroom very small but were fair trade-off's for the decor, staff, and location of the hotel.

I like this hotel. Yes, the room was small, but I've stayed in other hotels in Union Square, so I wasn't surprised. It was clean, comfortable, and renovated. The lobby is quaint, charming and serves free morning coffee and tea. Location is great. Wifi worked well.

The hotel is in an excellent location a block from Union Square. Hotel is a little dated, but conveniently situated which makes it ideal for visitors to San Francisco. Friendly and helpful staff including service staff.

Room 608 is small. It is clean and the bed is comfortable, small corner sofa, good size TV, USB sockets galore, coffee machine. Small shower cubicle and the sink area is cramped as is the bathroom area in total. No bar but a lounge area and free use of a PC in this area. No views from this room. There was planned decorating of the outside of the building so scaffolding was going up, don't know how long this was going to last? To the right there is Emblem that do breakfast in a very modern setting and to the left is themed diner. You can share a breakfast and cut some of the cost. I got the feeling that you needed to pay a bit more attention to safety when walking around at night.

It's comfortable. WIFI is free. There's coffee downstairs. There was a nice dressing area and the bed was crazy comfortable. It's an old building though. The hallways are small, the elevator groans and the floor is on a slant. But the location is great. There's no gym no cafe no room service and not a lot of room in the rooms themselves. I would still stay here again if traveling for work.

Having lived and stayed many places in The City I was pleasantly surprised to find this Best Western downtown. It is within walking distance of everything and just a half block from the Powell St cable car and union square. Yes it's a small, older hotel, with small rooms, but it is very clean and the staff is excellent. Sure you can stay at one of the larger tradition hotels.. but for the price and location it cant be beat. On the down side window mou Ted AC units are noisy and well its SF so sirens all night but I can see this being the hotel I'll recommend to friends

If you want to be in the heart of San Francisco then this could be the hotel for you. Right on the door step of Union Square and with good transport links to all other sight seeing area this is a good location to stay in San Francisco. Unfortunately I have had to rate this hotel only as average as one of the main reasons for staying at a hotel is to sleep and we did not really get much in the 4 nights we stayed here. The building is very old, quite charming actually, but so is the plumbing (not so charming). When flushing the toilet is sounded like an airplane taking off, and so did the toilets in all the surrounding rooms (above, below and to the sides). We must have been woken up at least twice EVERY night we stayed by someone flushing the toilet in the middle of the night which was extremely annoying. The rooms also have laminate flooring so we could hear every footstep, chair scrape, and door opening / closing the people in the room above us made. Just our luck that the people above were early risers and we were awoken around 7am (we prefer a bit more of a lie in when we are on holiday) 3 out of the 4 days we stayed here - we think they checked out before us because we eventually got our first lie in on the morning we were due to check out!! I would love to have given this hotel a better rating as it is lovely but when your sleep is effected to the extent ours was we think people need to know.

For the record, I am a Best Western Rewards Diamond member and I have stayed in probably 4 dozen Best Western hotels. I was traveling with my daughter and 2 granddaughters and we rented 2 rooms. The staff in this hotel is OUTSTANDING! They went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. A giant THANK YOU to Tia, Josh, Rebecca, Edward, Claudia, and Kevin for treating us as family rather than transients. NITPICKS: There is no breakfast - There was no safe or refrigerator in the room - The rooms were small - Only 1 small shelf over the sink. GOOD STUFF: Centrally located to shopping and transportation - Good restaurants within walking distance - The bed, linen, and pillows, were comfortable - Excellent Housekeeping - Wonderful sitting areas in and off of the lobby. OUTSTANDING STUF: Hospitality - The best lit room I've ever had - The best room I've ever had for electric outlets and USB Ports. BAD STUFF: I had an issue with the toilet plumbing – water level too high. REALLY BAD STUFF: Neither room received a wake-up call on our first morning and we missed an appointment. Later that day, Tia and I checked the system and it worked. For the rest of the week we used our alarm phone app. However, we left wake-up calls for our last morning as we had early flights out. I watched Edward put it in the book. We did NOT receive wake-up calls. That is a big no-no. What if we hadn't set our phones?! Ultimately, I give this hotel my highest recommendation.

There is no doubt that this hotel is tired looking and frankly dingy with very small rooms! However the place is clean with exceptional reception and housekeeping employees. All are very friendly helpful and fun. Union Square is literally a minute's walk from the hotel. One shocking thing we noticed was the large amount of homeless people in the area. Be prepared for them to come up to you asking for money, however we never felt threatened by this.

The hotel has a great location, the service was kind and friendly all the time, the rooms are small but the decoration is nice and comfortable. They always have the best attitude for help you and if you are traveling alone the shuttle service is incredible, the prices is low and safe.

The staff is exceptional. Edward, Rene, Josh, Rebeca, Maria and Tia greet each guest like a friend. The rooms are top-notch and immaculate. The hotel location is excellent with easy walking to Chinatown, shopping and entertainment. Also easy walking to Cesario's which is the best Italian restaurant.

Great Staff, great property and great location close to all of the best parts that a tourist should visit in San Francisco. Rene Edward and Rebecca all made our stay special as this trip was for my wife's birthday, they went above and beyond for us and we would stay there again without question next time we are in the area.

The Cartwright feels like step back in time the hotel is 104 years old has great character and the rooms are Modern, with comfy beds, the room I was in had a big closet with a great lighted mirror for getting dressed my room was cleaned daily so by the time I got back from my meetings it was all clean

The Cartwright Hotel is an old, stately hotel that meets the high Best Western standards. All staff are courteous and helpful. Our room was small, but adequate. The traditional Best Western continental breakfast is not offered because the hotel has no restaurant facilities, but coffee is available in the morning. The hotel is very conveniently located close to Union Square. It is a block and a bit from the Gray Line Visitor Center office and pick up point for the many SAN Francisco they offer. It is a ten minute taxi ride to Fishermans Wharf and the Princess Cruise Line terminal. There are many restaurants close by, including a diner two stores down from the hotel which serves an excellent breakfast. There is a drug store right across the street.

This hotel was perfect for us. We were right at Union Square and close to everything. Sears restaurant was right around the corner and had fantastic ratings. This hotel was great. We were able to check in early and the staff was the friendliest. They have a charming fireside with sofas and its so charming. We loved this hotel and will stay again.

Pictures are much better than reality. This is a redone building, lots of things are cosmetically spruced but the old bones show through. The closet in the room I stayed in smelled like mold, so I closed the door and did not use it. The size of the room is only enough to move around the bed. The bathroom is enough for one person to be in it at a time. Actual shower is well done but is actually a carve out that was not there before. Really not worth the money at 250 a night.

Stayed 4 nights at the Cartwright Hotel and it was very central to all the places we wanted to visit, and close to transport connections. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The availability of free coffee in the morning was an added bonus. Our room was ample size for us and was spotlessly clean. Would stay at this hotel again if visiting San Francisco.

We stayed three nights at the Cartwright as we used reward points. Location is a but away from the wharf and tourist activities however we used a taxi to go back and forth (approx $11-12). Room was clean however very tiny. Staff was very nice. Breakfast not on site however a couple restaurants nearby.

I usually choose Best Western due to their friendly service and great breakfast yet this hotel had neither. Highly disappointed. The bed was comfortable and the room quiet, but it was postage-stamp-size tiny, the bathroom the size of an airplane bathroom and window faced a brick wall. I noticed on the floor map that there were other rooms that were much bigger with better views, which were empty! Poor service! I am usually thanked and greeted and at least given a free bottle of water for being a rewards member, but not this time. During checkin the receptionist kept answering phone calls and ignoring me. Still angry about this. Not once was I greeted by reception staff, even though I walked by many times during 5 different shifts. There is NO breakfast nor bar, even though they have the bar and seating area available. For expensive San Francisco prices, do not choose this hotel. I'm sorry I spent so much if my hard-earned vacation money here. There are plenty of better options.

This was the perfect hotel for my 6 night stay. It was walking distance to many of the places I wanted to go with options for food nearby. Rene, the Concierge, and Rebecca at the front desk were particularly helpful and friendly. The room was comfortable and clean with a great view (8th floor) and the housekeeping staff were very accomodating when we needed extra coffee in the room. :) The lobby fireplace was most welcoming after a chilly walk back in the evening. The price was excellent and I look forward to staying there again.

From the moment I checked in I immediately felt at home at this hotel. Rebecca at the front desk upgraded me to a King size bedroom once she checked how long I was staying at the hotel. She was very kind, friendly and extremely helpful. She said that she wanted my stay at the hotel to be comfortable hence the upgrade and she wanted me to enjoy the city. The other lady who worked the front desk ( hair up in a bun and glasses) was also very helpful, kind and friendly. She answered all questions I had and if she didn't know something she said she would find out. She was fantastic. The gentleman clerk at the front desk and the gentleman who held my luggage for me as I had a later flight, were also very pleasant and helpful. I am sorry I don't know their names but they were also great. Yes the hotel is an older building, but that beinig said, it has kept the character while adding modern updates and style. Yes you can see where it's an older building but it just adds to the history of the building. My room was VERY quiet, clean and the bed was very comforable. LIghting was good and the sheets were clean and comfy. The bathroom was clean, tidy and even if it the toilet was really close to the shower, and the sink and vanity smaller than most in most people's homes, it really doesn't matter. Everything you need is in the bathroom, and really who goes to a hotel to spend all their time in the bathroom. The shower had good pressure and was clean as well. The bathroom amenities were plentiful and always refreshed. The location was about 5 blocks away from Powell St, where you can catch the BART ( subway) to the airport. Yes it's a bit uphill, but you get used to walking up and down very quickly in San Francisco. Union Square is close, food and restaurants are plentiful in the area. The hotel has coffee and tea available in the morning, and newspapers to read while you get ready for your day. I would not hesitate at all in staying at this hotel again when I go to San Francisco. Stayed 2 nights. Great place to stay if you want a taste of what the Tenderloin district was like 50 years ago. Small, shabby rooms with typical low rent SF housing features like looking out onto air shafts. Great location though! And affordable (for downtown San Francisco). Nice people at the front desk. Parking is provided off site (a block away).

Excellent location, good price. This is like a stark European hotel - cool historic features, clean and tidy and cozy inside. Bed was comfortable, toiletries acceptable, modern style. Free coffee in rooms and in lobby in the am; a 7-11 and CVS directly across the street for snacks and drinks. You can't believe the location!

Stayed here for 1 night. The rooms are tiny. Bed was super soft and sank in the middle. Pillows super hard. Ceiling had paint chips peeling off - implying damp. Staff were unhelpful at best - felt like we were an inconvenience. For the price there are way better places to stay in San Francisco.

Great place to stay great character of old and new. Friendly and helpful staff. Would highly recommend to anyone. Great location in the heart of San Francisco. Close to restaurants and public transit , street cars. Great coffee bar and lobby to relax and wait in or catch up on emails. Excellent value.

The Cartwright Hotel in San Francisco is everything you never wished you had. It's old, the rooms are awful. Doesn't have a minimum of amenities (like a cafeteria). The price is exorbitant in relation to its poor value. Service is nonexistent.

Stayed for 3 nights at n this hotel. Small rooms, but clean and very comfortable bed. Staff are very friendly. 1 block from Union Square & a stones throw away from the cable car stop. Would definitely stay again.

My husband and I had a fantastic stay at the Cartwright. The room was clean, the bed was soft and we had all we needed for our 2 night stay. This hotel is located close to so many restaurants, shops and night clubs. We definitely enjoyed Lori's Diner right next door which is open 24 hours. We will definitely return to this hotel.

Great central location to Union Square- that's the only plus. First room I was put in didn't have a working tv and the coffee cups were used and dirty. The second room I was put in had a tv remote that wouldn't work and hair all over the bathroom. The second room also had bedding that was stained yellow. Both rooms had paint peeling. Beds were very old and super soft. Window in room looked out on a landing that was filled with trash from hotel- old paint buckets, etc. Hotel needs major repairs and cleaning. At almost $200 a night this was a ridiculous rip off. I would never stay here again, ever.

Terrible hotel rooms are so small very old property, service is terrible zero hospitality the front desk and porter not friendly at all they not wear uniforms which very strange on my last day I was waiting for my pick up for the airport and the front desk and porter eating pizza in the lobby and in front of the other guest not a good look also others day the staff just watching tv and on the private phone calls which is terrible look, on my first day I ask the porter what tour are available he recommended the city tour bus but I need to put $15 dollars deposit and I will get it back which I never did he saw me on the second day but never mention anything I think is very doggy, my first time and last time in this hotel the only thing is in good location but better hotel around , I think the manager of the hotel needs to pay more attention to their staff.

Very classic historic looking hotel at the right location in union square. everything was at walking distance. Cable cars, skating rink, stores, and etc. We booked a suite and i thought it was amazing for the value. Friendly staff. Will definitely book again. if you are a light sleeper the noise from the street will bother you because the walls are thin but quality is good.

There are really no amenities at this hotel. I didn't even know whether there was an ice machine. The rooms are very small. However, as the room was just for sleeping, we didn't mind. We spent all day out exploring the area anyway. The location more than made up for the room size. I wouldn't recommend using a rental vehicle as parking costs per day are very high. We used public transportation to easily get us around to many areas. The location was great for that and there are plenty of food options in the area. The wifi was open and really should have password protection at the least.

The Cartwright Hotel is our favorite hotel to stay at while in San Francisco. The hotel is close to Union Square and all of the activity of downtown. The prices are amazing and the hotel has so much character. We can't wait to go back!

Location was great, easy to walk down to Fisherman's Wharf, little harder getting back. Be prepared for tiny rooms & bathrooms. We had nowhere to lay out the luggage. Had to hid it in cupboard as there really was no floor space. Nowhere to really put things in the bathrooms either. Parking. No where to stop and offload luggage between 4-6pm weekdays. Car park around the corner $35/night. Wasn't really told on check in what was or wasn't available. I did accidentally leave my iPad and they did securely hold it for me until i made it back.

We found the hotel easy to find and a great location. Near Union Square and the BART station at Powell Street Was a ten minute walk. The lobby was comfortable and the back area had a fireplace. The staff was helpful and greeted us each time we came in and out. The rooms felt like a small flat. We would recommend this Best Western to any one looking for a San Francisco experience with the Best Western service.

I stayed at the Cartwright for three nights and everything was fine. The lobby is charming and the location is excellent. My room was cleaned really well every day and the building was quiet. My room was small, recently renovated and equipped with necessities. Couple downsides: My remote didn't work (not a problem as I didn't watch much TV) and the mirror in the bathroom was a few inches too high for me (I'm average height for an American woman, so that was odd). Finally I wish the hallway lights were lighter and the alarm clock light was darker. All said, I'd stay there again for the quiet rooms and proximity to Union Square.

The Cartwright Hotel isawonderfully nostalgic Hotel on Sutter Street by Union Square. It has a gas fireplace near the lobby and comfortable chairs to rest and relax after exploring San Fransisco. The hotel is 1 block away from Powell Street where you can hop on and off the famous San Fransisco cable cars. It is also on the same block as Lori's Diner.

This hotel only has 20 rooms on each of the 8 floors. This makes it really quiet and perfect for business travel. I consider it my “go to” when going to San Francisco. The staff is super friendly and always have good recommendations for the restaurants within walking distance.

Had looked around for a place to stay in and around Union Square. I selected The Cartwright as it is close ( 2 blocks) and has plenty around for all your food and entertainment and also heaps of shopping. Also the price was reasonable. It's an old boutique hotel and certainly has plenty of character. It is clean and tidy however the rooms are on the smaller side, but probably what you have to expect around town for this price. The bathrooms are quite small and you do need to work hard to get in and out of the shower without going to the toilet. As in they are close together. There are no in room safes, and fridges which has been mentioned before. Certainly no deal breakers though. Overall, It's a good place to stay, close to pretty well all the usual tourist things you may want to do and see. All your transport options are close including the Cable Car stop just down the road a few blocks.

We got a complimentary upgrade on check in the rooms are massive! Comfortable beds, clean bathrooms. Television in the living and bedroom.The staff were fantastic. Walking distance to most places, we loved Washington.

1. Rooms are very small, particularly the bathroom - our cupboard in bathroom was right over a tiny sink. I couldn't use mouthwash and spit out without having to duck my head underneath cupboard or missing the sink. 2. Room was in rough shape -- scratches, dents, dirty walls, falling off hooks (that held hair dryer). Windows disgusting -- granted SF had pollution while we were there I was told by front that windows get washed once/year due to "ordinances." 3. Wifi quality was up and down. It was on but speeds varied drastically. 4. No A/C on the entire street facing side of the hotel. Did not realize that a hotel in SF at this price point would not have A/C. Ordinances are the reason but this should be made very clear as the expectation is that there will be A/C. 5. Policies not very accommodating. Needed to check out at 2 pm since my conference ran until then. They only would give me 1 pm and 50% daily rate for the extra hour. Clearly had rooms, just wouldn't accommodate. Also, when we discussed the A/C situation they offered to move us but would only do it if our bags entirely packed. We asked if they can move a few hangers since we ironed our clothes for a conference, they said "no". This is an old hotel with a very cool history and an excellent location. But the room quality and level of accommodations by staff for price/value is not there. This is not a 3.5 star hotel. 2.5 at best.

Stayed here for 2 nights, older style hotel, no safe in the rooms, rooms are very small, but we were only in there to sleep, a bit of noise outside as staff of various hotels are demonstrating against low wages!

We stayed for a total of 4 nights. This hotel is older, but it is well-maintained. Night staff wasnt particularly friendly when we checked in late at night, but he did the job. The day staff are friendlier and more helpful. The downsides of the hotel were the proximity to the Marriott Hotel protests - we heard them from our room if the windows were open. They did stop at night though which meant we were able to have a quiet night's sleep.The other thing I would love to see the hotel offer would be baggage storage for overnight. We stayed here for 3 nights, then needed somewhere to store our luggage for the next 2 nights while we explored Yosemite. We then came back to the Cartwright for 1 night. However they were unable to provide services to store our luggage for the 2 nights in between even though we were coming back, which would have been way more convenient for us. They instead suggested we use the Chancellor Hotel for this service (about a 2 min walk away) which we used. The best thing about the hotel is the location. It is in the perfect location - minutes to Union Square. Would recommend staying if youre not after all the bells and whistles of a luxury hotel, but want to stay somewhere convenient, clean and comfortable.

The Cartwright is almost ideal in its location with barely a 5 minute walk to Union Square which is one of the worlds best shopping precincts and plenty of bars & eating options available in close proximity.The hotel itself is a little bit older than most but it has an absolute charm, our room appeared to have undergone a recent renovation. We loved the separate walk in robe and storage area for for suitcases. Bathroom was extremely small but still efficient. The wifi worked all the time and we did not have any dropouts. The staff were very helpful particularly with storing our luggage whilst we waited for our late flight out of San Fran. Our Concierge Kevin was extremely helpful in tour options and also for great restaurants in the area.

I love this hotel. My room was a little bit on a small side, but clean and cozy. The bathroom was modern and convenient (also small -- but that's expected of down town San-Francisco). The bed was comfortable. There was a large walk-in closet.

Love the staff, nothing is too much trouble! Clean and comfortable rooms. Useful washroom product. Toilet paper is good quality. Breakfast options surround the hotel down Powell St and Mason St. Concierge Rene is very helpful too!

Great location at Union Square. Room is small but comfortable. Room ventilation wasn't good, felt stuffy unless windows are opened but it's noisy at streets. Sat night was extremely noisy from next door's guests till 3am.

Older hotel but well kept. Right in the center of downtown SF. Close to a few bars & restaurants. About a $10 dollar ride to Fisherman's Wharf. Rooms are small but I heard that's the way hotels in SF are.

Hotel is in great location near Union Square. Rooms are on the smaller side but to be expected for an older building. Room has nice touched and loved the bed. Only complaint would be that bathroom was tiny.

Asked for back room after reading reviews room was tiny but was central to all things and we did not stay in room much there are many food options pricey in tourist areas unless you wander out a little further a lot of homeless in the area but they did not bother us

The hotel looks like the setting for an episode of The Streets of San Francisco and apparently is due for a facelift. Inside though the rooms are clean and modern with comfortable beds, Wifi. Ask for a room away from the Street, not much of a view but quieter. Good Value for money given it's location near Union Square. A short walk from the Square, shops, cable car terminus and the Powell St BART/ Muni Station. I'm already planning another visit.

It's a fairly comfortable hotel in an average location if you have a car. Parking is very difficult to find. Parking at the hotel is $45 a night... you can find it cheaper down the street at another garage for $35 a night... No breakfast, rooms were small, they were decently clean, sheets were not comfortable.

The hotel rooms are clean and decorated modernly. The WiFi is also good in the room. However the reception and the corridors felt like being in American horror story, so definitely need updating! The rooms are also very small and are missing a safe and a fridge. The hotel is in a good location, a 5 minute walk to union square and a 40 minute walk to the piers. Due to the closest to union square you can hear the trams at night. You can also hear everyone in all the other rooms.

Great convenient location to see most of what San Francisco has to offer. Some great eateries around the corner and very close to most bus and trams. Staff are excellent, room was comfortable but bathroom was a squeeze. Front roos can be noisy.

Cute little boutique hotel. European like - small room. Lacking water pressure in the showers. Parking is two blocks up the street at $45usd for 24 hours. Pet friendly at no extra fee. Everything is walkable. Walgreens/7-11 across the hotel. front desk nice. A bit pricey, but being central downtown san fran, seems like it is the norm.

Nice cosy 'olde' world hotel situated 1 minute walk from Union Square and bars, shops,train and cable cars. The room we had was comfortable clean and cosy. Free internet and helpful knowledgeable staff.

Friendly helpful staff Would recommend.Note expensive parking in line with the position in town, didn't care just happy to get rid of the car for a few days, s f driving not good for relaxing lol.Out the front and just off union square, couldn't be better

We found the location of this hotel was great - close to cable cars, close to Muni bus line, close to good restaurants. The hotel however was not as expected. The room size was just okay, with a walk in robe of sorts, but the bathroom was tiny. Comfortable bed. The lift broke down on our second day and to their credit, it was repaired before the end of the day. Some rooms have no view.

This hotel is in a great location, a stones throw from Union Square. The check in staff were very friendly and efficient as was the Concierge, Kevin, his knowledge of San Francisco was very good and booking things/adventures for us. The room although small was adequate, a fridge would have been nice though!

Spent 4 nights with my granddaughter in one of the front rooms of hotel. Room was small but nicely renovated including bath. But they should replace windows. Kept checking if they were open because before midnight it was impossible to sleep. When cable car rang its bell I thought I was in a Rice-A-Roni commercial in my room. Lobby is large and pleasant with a nice fireplace going in morning. Best part is location. Lots of places to eat nearby plus drugstore and Starbucks and 7-11. Diner next door is good and open 24 hours. Rooms in back probably quieter. Don't take ones in front. Staff is nice.

Loved this Hotel, quiet and unassuming, but it a really great spot. The 'local' across the road, The Golden Gate Tap Bar is perfect for a drink or meal and you are walking distance from China Town, the pier district and so many attractions such as Alcatraz, Aquarium by the bay, Madame Tussauds and much more. The rooms are small, but clean and quiet. Minimal interaction with service staff, but sometimes when your on holidays thats exactly what you want.

Maybe I'm just not used to older big city hotels, but this was not what I expected. We were there for 5 nights and it was incredibly small. The hallway is much too small for 2 people to walk side by side. Once in the room, the most remarkable feature is the very small size of it all comes The bathroom is so small that your knees touch both the shower door and the sink cabinet when you sit on the toilet. There are no outlets in or near the bathroom and zero counter space. The room is so small that the headboard of the bed is within a few inches of the wall. So you can't easily walk between the bed and the wall. You have to close the bathroom door to open the room door. The closet is very small and the dresser had only 2 drawers. The TV is also very small. No microwave, no refrigerator, not even an ice machine anywhere. (You can call the front desk and they will bring you ice.) All that said, they are really doing the best with what they have. The king size bed was very comfortable and the room was far from the street and very quiet. The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. The common area is lovely but they only have coffee and tea in the morning. The restaurant nearby is $12-15 for breakfast. It is right in the heart of Union Square and a great location. Perhaps if we hadn't been 2 people and staying so long it would have been fine. But for the same price, I will choose a modern hotel next time.

Clean rooms. Concierge was helpful for local restaurants. You can hear the cable cars 1/3 block away which is not too loud, but perfect to let you know you are in SF. Valet to help with your car or self car parking was terrific and efficient. The building makes you think of all the wonderful travelers over the years who have stayed. The rooms are somewhat smaller, but we did not mind this.

Hotel is in a great area with lots of shops for food, drink or shopping all within a moments walk. The hotel itself could be viewed as old. The room though was lovely. Nice big bed. Great AC. Room was clean and had lots of amenities. Usb ports are a treat and plenty of space to store lugguage.Housekeeping staff are brilliant. Edward on the front desk friendly and helpful as was kevin, the concierge. Overall a pleasant stay and would stay again and recommend to friends.

We recently stayed at the Cartwright from August 12 - 16 and it was fabulous stay!!! The best location! The housekeeping staff did a fabulous job of cleaning our room everyday! All the staff were very friendly. Tai at the front desk and the porters were exceptional! They had great recommendations for restaurants and spent time giving us directions on many occasions during our stay! The coffee, fire place and seating in the lobby was a nice touch! I would definitely recommend this hotel. Thank you to all the staff for an awesome visit!

I stayed in a regular room for 3 nights. Perfect blend of old classic and modern. Hotel retains its historic bones but has completely modern furnishings, baths, etc. it feels very European in the best sense of the word. Very comfortable bed, great location, great staff, very clean. My one and only criticism is the absence of room safes. This is actually an important point for me so I hope they are added before my next stay. Love the Cartwright. It made me happy.

Great location near Union Square and within walking distance of Chinatown. Cable car across the street and Bart Powell Street Station also close. Very friendly and helpful staff. Our room was small, but it was well-furnished and had all the amenities we needed. It seemed a bit pricey, but the price was fair for the neighborhood.

We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights whilst being tourists in SanFrancisco. We received a warm welcome upon check in and found our room to be cosy, clean and well kept. It also has a lovely bar area complete with a logfire which we thought was a nice touch. This hotel is a great location with lots of restaurants and fast food places close by. We particularly enjoyed a lovely meal at the Cheesecake Factory. Only a 5 minute walk from the Cartwright opposite where the open top bus tours leave. You can also catch a cable car outside Starbucks right on the corner outside the hotel. The cable cars take you down towards each of the piers. We found the cable cars to be particularly busy during the month of July with many people standing waiting to go on full cable cars therefore we opted for a taxi a couple of times. The hotel has 2 computers, a printer and WiFi which we found to be excellent. We used the printer to print out a last minute voucher we had booked whilst staying in Sanfrancisco. All in all if you're looking for a hotel focussed on location and customer service. This is the one for you!

We stayed for two nights and were quite impressed. After coming out of chain hotels it was refreshing to get the personalised service. From the moment we got their staff were great, Mario the concierge was very helpful and accommodating. The location is spot on, 1/4 block from union square. The rooms aren't huge but comfortable and bedding was good. Would recommend.

This hotel was all that we needed on our first visit to San Francisco. It is in a great location close to Union Square, perfect for shopping, visiting the museums, catching the local tour buses and the cable cars which pass the end of Sutter Street. The rooms we booked were perfect and we were adjacent to our teenage girls as requested and contrary to other reviews a very good size for both. We were also overlooking the front of the hotel which wasn't noisy, given its central location. Coffee making facilities were provided in the room and downstairs as well. The staff were all extremely helpful with any requests/questions we had. Although the hotel doesn't serve breakfast we can thoroughly recommend Lori's Diner just a few doors down (plates are huge)! A five-star recommendation all round!!!

This is a hotel that differs from many others. First of all, it is very well located, very central. The hotel is old and breathes a lot of charm. Its uniqueness has been preserved well and only careful modernities have been sneaked in during renovations. There is a lot to read in the lobby about the hotel's history. What stuck with me is the relationship with dogs - which is OK to bring along. A very funny text about dogs that never smoked in bed, never played loud music, never broken furniture etc. The room size varies. It's simple, spartan and functional rooms. It is a simple with good standard in the rooms. The staff are friendly, accommodating and service minded. Cleaning is done well. I changed a slightly negative view to much more positive. Stayed 9 nights, business trip. Quiet and nice, did not bother anything. Sutter Street is lively and sound though ... but it is in the heart of San Francisco.

I had concerns about our decision to stay in the Cartwright Hotel in San Francisco. Though after 3 days stay there and getting my bearings in the city, I've realised it was a great decision. Situated right next to the famous Lori's diner, it is also next to one of the tram lines. As the name suggests, it is just around the corner from Union Square too. One morning we walked 20 minutes to Lombard Street. Then the next morning we walked 20 minutes in the other direction down to Pier 1. Both can be accessed quicker via tram or Uber. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is that the Cartwright does not offer breakfast. As mentioned, it is situated right next door to the best breakfast diner in town (probably part of their decision) but sometimes it's nice to have breakfast on offer before you leave the hotel. Maybe a harsh star deduction on my part.

Enjoyable stay at the Cartwright. Rooms were very comfortable although a bit small. Staff was friendly and extremely helpful especially Edward and the concierge. It's a convenient location in the Union Square area. I look forward to staying here again.

As expected, the Cartwright is a lovely old building with a lot of charm in a terrific location for walking Union Square, shopping, dining and so on. Check in process and staff greeting was excellent. We were upgraded to a suite at no charge, another pleasant surprise. Our 4th floor room consisted of a larger living area, bathroom and bedroom. Living area had a single serve coffee pot but it didnt work very well. Starbucks was across the street. Apparently there is coffee on premise near the lobby. I missed it. No breakfast. Bathroom was definitely for ADA use which was not our need. So no counter for toiletries but ample space. Walk in shower with hand held shower head. My husband is tall so it was a little tricky for him. Low pressure but good temperatures. They were steady! The bed was extremely comfortable and for that alone I am so grateful! Additionally it was very clean and amenities provided. Flat walking distance to a great restaurant called Wayfare Tavern! Definitely in the hub bub of San Francisco living.

Okay, so here's the deal. If you are looking for an ultra-modern hotel with all the amenities don't consider the Cartwright. However, if you are looking for a quaint, convenient, clean, and reasonable place this is for you. We just spent three nights here and loved it. The staff is very friendly. The Concierge, Rene, was extremely helpful. The beds are comfortable but the rooms a bit small. The location next to the cable car line is great and a one block walk gets you to Union Square where you can do the Hop On/Hop Off buses. I would go back here in a minute.

This hotel is great for what it is. And for the price, even better. We booked four rooms for a family stay and the location was pete t to get everywhere.- Centrally located, comfortable bed, recently modernised furniture, valet parking and car rental nearby. All you want and need for a city stay! The hotel is dog friendly, so if you aren't, stay away. Pretty sure it's also marijuana friendly, like the rest of San Fran.. there were multiple whiffy gusts down the hall. Also my dad's non-smoking room STANK of cigarette smoke, they were happy to move him though the next morning. Concierge was helpful and front desk friendly. Note there's no bar, but plenty nearby!

I stayed at the Cartwright Hotel for 5 nights in late June 2018. The facilities were simple, clean and convenient and the staff were friendly and accommodating. I was able to have a refrigerator bought to my room at my request to ensure I could keep my snacks cool. The hotel is ideally located close to the main street which includes ample coffee and shopping options and is also a short trip (via public transport or Uber) to the wharf area. Thank you for making my stay an enjoyable one.

Slightly quirky, bit of an old world feel to it. Lifts are slow, service is good. Location ideal, very close to Union Square. You can easily get more luxury in San Francisco but I think The Cartwright offers good value for money.

The rooms are really tiny,no getting away from that,even with two people and single beds you are in each other's pocket,the noise from the street is unbearable and we stayed on the 5th floor,the location is good,however you will have to deal with San Frans homeless problem (nothing to do with the hotel I know).Bathroom is good,tv is rubbish,staff were really helpful and that was a massive help considering the travel agent messed up the booking.Look for other lodgings first,and if all things fail stay here,it's ok,but rooms are really really small and that could be a deal breaker,as I'm writing this my partner tripped over her bag and again began cursing the lack of space,

Located in Sutter Street, 2 blocks away from Union Square. Close to Shopping, Restaurants and many stores. San Francisco famous Tram ride is in Powell street, next to the hotel. Hotel is very traditional theme , Rooms are small , however they are clean , neat and tidy. Bathroom is congested and it will be a challenge for some one slightly oversize, to use it . I am at 5'11” , couldn't sit in the commode comfortably as knees were hitting the sink cup board. No in- room fridge, how ever tea/coffee facility is available. Check in & Check out process is quick & efficient. Staff are friendly & helpful. I have seen the most interesting notice to its guest here, see my pictures.

This hotel has all you need to visit San Francisco: great location (one block from Union square), very clean and well-appointed rooms (renovated recently, I believe), and friendly staff. Rooms are small, which is standard for San Francisco. But, do you really care for a big room? No, if you're in town to explore San Francisco. And the room has everything you may need anyway. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast, but you have plenty of restaurants just steps from the door. They offer coffee in the morning and you can make coffee in your room as well. Highly recommended! I'll be back.

I stayed here recently for 3 nights. The hotel is in a good, central location, only 5 minutes walk from Union Square. Staff are friendly and helpful. The room was quite small (particularly by American standards) but it was big enough, and it was quiet. Plenty of dining options in the area.

Went here with my girlfriend to celebrate the 4th of July after an intense two week road trip. We wanted to sleep in on the 4th so we'd be fresh that night. It'd be the first time this vacation we'd be getting more than 6 to 7 hours of sleep. We put the "Do not disturb" sign up. Much to our surprise, we were woken up at 13:00 by loud knocking and a note being shoved under the door. The note said that they were respecting our do not disturb sign, but it being after 2 pm, they won't be cleaning the room today. We were very confused about this. We went to the front desk to ask about it. I got to talk to the concierge. He didn't understand the problem at all. They always put that note under the door when you have the do not disturb sign on... I asked why do it at 1 pm with loud knocking tho? Well that's because checkout is before 1 pm... I informed him I'm not checking out. The concierge then said he didn't know why they knocked and just quietly stared at me. That was it. No apology, no nothing. According to him I could just go back to sleep. I told him sleeping doesn't work for me like that and that I wasn't happy about the situation. Then he told me "What do you want me to do about it? Just be happy. It's the 4th of July". I have never encountered such a terrible way of handling a complaint. What a lousy service attitude. I will never go to a Best Western again. I understand they can't unknock a door, but at the very least pretend to care about your customers experience.

Stayed here a couple of times with all being excellent experiences. The hotel is located just a block from Union Square and in a good part of the city. Its an older smaller hotel and feels more personal than the larger convention hotels. The rooms are small but with all basic amenities and very clean. Staff is all around very pleasant. There's a wall-greens and a 711 right across the street for snacks or beverages. There's also a liquor and wine shop right next door. A nice diner down the block and sushi restaurant for take out.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Cartwright. The front desk staff were professional and accommodating to my noon arrival time. The hotel itself has a lot of charm and my room was updated and spotless. It faced the back which I would recommend if you mind street noise... Sutter Street is not too loud though so you could probably get away with it. Housekeeping came right up with a bucket of ice when I asked and there is coffee/tea in the room, as well as downstairs in the lobby. The area is nice and central but very close to some shady areas so do ask the front desk which direction to head in. Right up the hill is Nob Hill, Chinatown, and Little Italy, but down the hill can get strange. Overall I definitely recommend it and would stay again. Lots of great pubs and restaurants within walking distance

Stayed here for a few nights so we could have a look around San Fran. Found the hotel easily and dropped off bags before returning hire car to the Airport. The Hotel is in easy reach of the Bart on Powell St. On arrival check in was easy with politest of staff. Room although compact was exactly what was needed had everything in it. Bed was extremely comfortable and good storage for bags and clothes. No breakfast available but copious amounts of coffee and tea provided in the foyer. Didn't suffer from any street noise at all from outside despite being centrally located. Staff were excellent throughout the stay, made to feel very welcome. Would definitely visit again if in San Fran.

I've stayed here in the past. The hotel has been remodeled since the last time I was here making the rooms bigger. I like the location. It's an old hotel so there's not a lot of amenities but we don't usually stay in the room when visiting SF. Close to Cable cars and Shopppng. Very centrally located. I like old hotels .

We ended up changing hotels and coming to the Cartwright house The rooms were Great, the staff was OUTSTANDING. I would recommend this hotel very much. Since it was a last minute booking I was afraid we might have some issues But there were none for the entire 6 day stay.

Our stay at The Cartwright hotel in downtown San Fransisco was absolutely amazing. From our arrival to our departure from the room to the staff. The concierge upon our arrival was great! He was very attentive and had a great suggestion for our transit back from the airport later. Also the front desk person was very welcoming and helpful. He was able to get us checked in a bit early, and they were able to hold our bags since the room wasn't ready yet. The room was very clean and updated but still had the nostalgic feel. It was a very classy remodel and the rooms were quiet and cozy(we were on the 8th floor.) And of course it is in a great location at a great price. Also upon departure they were able to offer a late check out and also hold our bags until about 7p (we had a red eye flight that night) I would HIGHLY recommend anyone going to San Fransisco to stay at this hotel, and if we ever go back I will make it a priority to stay here again. Great job to the staff and to the management team for having a greatly run hotel.

Nice friendly greeting on arrival. Quick check in. A deposit is required. Room was spacious with plenty of power and USB points/TV/Coffee maker/alarm clock/radio. Bathroom is compact but has everything you need, lovely fluffy white towels. Very comfortable bed. Good shower pressure and ample hot water.Great location close to shops/bars/restaurants/transport links. You can catch the Cable car at the corner of the block. Just a few blocks from Union Square. Walgreens/7Eleven across road. Josh the concierge was very helpful in finding me a ticket for Alcatraz at short notice. (Thank you).All the staff very friendly. Would highly recommend this hotel.

The hotel staff was terrific. The lobby has old school San Francisco charm. The rooms are small and have what you need. The remodeling brings modern updates to wearing interiors. Bathroom is tiny and the open closet vanity area supplements. While modest size, the shower is very good. Valet parking is expensive! Will consider staying here again. Hotel price is reasonable for SF and the location quite good.

This is a wonderful hotel. It is located close to Union Square and China Town. This is an older 8 story hotel. It has been renovated and is now owned by Best Western. The rooms are small. However, great things come in small packages. We had the queen size room. Plenty of plugs, USB ports, super comfortable bed and pillows, big closet with large mirror that lights up with push of a button in the mirror, glass enclosed shower with no tub, very clean and quiet are some of the great features. The lobby is a great place for people to gather. Many different seating areas are available. My favorite was the area near the gas log fireplace. The concierge, whose name is Rene, was very helpful and friendly. If you are going to sightsee, you need to talk to him. He has deals on tours and advice on which to take. They also arranged for our transportation to SFO airport which was only a 30 minute drive.

Perfect location for shopping, close to Union Square and Chinatown. The Cartwright hotel has nice and clean hotel rooms, the downside of the trip is when the hotel clerk was angry because we polite declined the taxi he proposed. That definitely ruined the stay at the hotel.

I stood there with my 80 year old mother and the staff could not have been any more friendlier, welcoming, and helpful in every way possible. The location is excellent; near all forms of transportation, shopping, food, lounges for night life but just secluded enough where you are not overwhelmed with tourists. The front desk staff and concierge will go out of their way to recommend restaurants, shopping, routes, tours, etc. You will not go wrong staying at this hotel.

I liked my experience with Best Western-Cartwright. The staff were attentive and friendly. The hotel was located a few blocks from Union Square--close enough to have access to all the shopping and sights, but far away enough the street was not overwhelmed with tourists (in contrast to Powell Street). My visit was business related and the hotel is located close enough to the business district that I could walk to my appointments within 10 minutes. My only caveat is: my room faced Sutter, Street and I could hear the street/traffic noise (car horn blaring); however, this did not bother me. But for travelers who are light sleepers you may want to request a room not facing Sutter Street. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for an affordable, clean and friendly place to stay near SF's Union Square.

Perfect location, front desk employees are so friendly and helpful with recommendations. Only a few steps off of Union Square. Because it's between two other buildings room are very quiet. Be forewarned the rooms are very "cozy" - but no carpet (at least in my room). I loved that - no worries about what is in the carpet against your bare feet. The bathroom was so tiny! You literally had to go out of the room to change your mind! Luckily in the closet (which is almost as big as the bathroom) there was a little dressing table with a great mirror to blow dry hair and put on makeup. The only issue I have is no ice machines. Every time you want ice you have to get a bucket from the front desk. Oh - and coffee in the lobby. There were quite a few of us traveling on business and leaving the hotel before 6:30 and coffee was not avaibale until 7 am. I've already booked my next stay here!

Had a three night stay here was ideally located for union square. The room was however a little small so not much room to move around,, as we were out all day exploring the sites it was not too bad. The staff were very friendly and we had quite a laugh with them. Just a couple of doors away was a lovely diner where they did lovely breakfasts and evening meals.

We loved our stay here, the rooms feel quite homely (if a little on the small side), lovely and clean with touches of character. We walked a lot around San Fran and this hotel was perfectly central for all our needs. It's about 30 mins walk to fisherman's wharf (don't forget the hills are steep though!) but it's closer to financial district, 7 eleven is right opposite for convenience, as well as about 5 mins if that from China town.

Stayed here last month for our last night in San Francisco. Property is literally around the corner from Union Square so it's super convenient. Older property which had been renovated. Rooms are super small but with so much to do and see in San Francisco we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. Staff was incredibly efficient as well as friendly.

Luckily I was travelling alone as there was no way 2 people were fitting either in the room OR the bed which was a tiny "double". You couldn't swing a cat in there. The bathroom was minuscule, I stubbed my toe dozens of times as you have to turn around constantly in a very small space to get to the sink, toilet, shower. Not good. The location is really nice as it is not far from Union Square. I walked to Moscone Centre every day as I had a conference there; for me it was a fine walk - not too far. There was a tiny little "couch" in the room which I kinda liked but after a while it was not really comfortable. There is no bar in this hotel but the staff will get you an ice bucket if you ask at reception. Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights are awful! The noise was unbelievable. At one point I thought someone was playing giant mikado with steel poles just outside my room. Then the drunk people came back; falling into my room door, shouting down the corridors........I hardly slept those 3 nights. We had a team meeting here and to be honest the room was not great. It is on the ground floor and there are no windows. I had to take time during breaks to go outside to get some sun and fresh air. The lunch provided was really good though. All-in-all I think you can probably get a better hotel for the same price.

Hotel was nice and is in a great Central location. That being said, front desk service was horrible. We called in advance the day before to see if we could possibly check in early since our flight arrived at 8AM and check in wasn't until 3PM. There was no attempt to try to do anything for us. We were told they would contact house keeping and call when it was ready. We called back twice after that throughout the day only to get hung up on TWICE! The third time we finally didn't get hung up on they said that housekeeping was on lunch and had to wait until 3PM. (This was around noon) This hotel lacks sincerity, empathy and quality customer service. Oh and house keeping came knocking on our door the next morning at 9AM so seems like they were available during that time after all.

DO not stay here if you have more than one person - the rooms are definitely not big enough for two, it fits a bed, small desk and that is about it. I have never stayed in a hotel room so small! The hotel was clean and everything seemed nice, just extremely small. I stayed here for a work conference down at Moscone Center and it is a little far walk for that, but it is right at Union Square which is nice.

Wasn't really looking forward to this hotel after reading some of the reviews. However, I needn't have worried. Staff checked me in quickly and answered any questions I had. Although my room was on the smaller side it had been recently been refurbished and the toilet was on the small side too. The corridors have pipes running along the roof which are painted gray and in my opinion this makes it look dark. The hotel is a really old but well kept. The free coffee and tea each morning was a nice touch. The hotel sits just of Union Square with a supermarket right across the road. The cable car stops at the end of the street. There is restaurants and a Starbucks really close too.

Awsum location right in the heart of san Francisco. You could walk everywhere u needed to go. Hotel was clean staff were amazing and very friendly. The bed was so comfortable I would book this hotel again if i return to San Francisco.

Stayed two nights in the Cartwright and must say this is a very pleasant hotel. Conveniently located to the best shops and not far from the BART which is a direct line from SAN Francisco Airport. Our room was a small twin bedded room, small bathroom shower only. Rooms are very clean, good shower and large wardrobe. Happy to stay here should I return my only criticism is the noise from the rooms next, corridors and outside is a little too excessive but considering the price paid for our two night stay we were more than happy.

The BW Cartwright Hotel in Union Square is reasonably priced compared to other hotels in the area! It is old, the rooms are small and the hotel does not have amenities (like room service, restaurant, pay-for-TV movies, etc.), but the service staff are all excellent and it's location is very close to Union Square. Overall, I would definitely stay here again!

Very nice hotel with friendly staff. Rooms were clean and comfortable but a little small, especially the bathroom. Coffee and tea provided downstairs in the common area in the morning. Staff pretty knowledgeable about restaurants in the area.

We stayed here for a week. Hotel lobby welcoming they had an open fireplace when we arrived at 11pm lots of seating downstairs. Room decor modern and homely. It's about a 30min walk to fisherman's wharf. And a block away from union square. Cable car is only one min walk down street Just a few cons: -there is no safe or mini fridge in the room -house keeping starts coming around at 8 in the morning you can hear them knocking on doors when your trying to sleep. -the bathroom is quite small. we had to step out of the bathroom to dry ourselves as the toilet is right next to the shower.

For the location the hotel is worth it. Recently bought by Best Western and renovated. Staff was great and rooms were clean. Keep in mind this is San Francisco so rooms are small but they are new and have everything you need. Will definitely stay here next time we are in the city.

I have always wanted to go to San Francisco. I took my daughter during spring break. We stayed for 3 of our 7 nights at the Grant Plaza Hotel. The rooms are little small but they're Cozy and have a boutique feel. The staff are Pleasant This hotel is well-kept and has a old-time feel to it that is inviting and comfortable. Anytime I go back to San Francisco I will definitely be staying here again. The hotel sits just inside the gate to Chinatown so it is convenient and close to the cable cars. There are a few restaurants across the street and close by if you get hungry and don't want to travel far. I felt safe being there just with my daughter and myself. Thank You to Staff at The Grant0k Plaza Hotel for making our stay in San Francisco and enjoyable and relaxing.

After a very mediocre experience at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel down the street, we were delighted by the great service at the Cartwright Hotel! The rooms creatively make the most of the limited space with contemporary design, great layout and a boutique feel. A very relaxing place to spend four nights in San Francisco. You can't ask for a better location, near Union Square and the Cable Cars on Powell Street . Highly recommend the Cartwright!

We stayed here for 5 nights and found the hotel to be in such a great position. Easy walks into china town, union square and the nearby Westfield. The staff were great and always there to ask for any help. Wifi was great and worked consistently. The rooms were small but we liked how neat and tidy they were so it was no issue. Overall I would recommend this hotel to everyone I know who is going to visit San Francisco !!!

Moderately priced, comfortable hotel in a good location a few blocks from Union Square. Clean rooms with friendly and helpful staff within walking distance of shops and many good restaurants. Would stay there again.

Expensive as is everywhere at this time of year, however, centrally located and convenient for getting around. Rooms we're fine, and staff were helpful. No in room dining available, but plenty of places to eat within a 5 minute radius.

We loved our stay here. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and we had a lovely warm welcome whenever we entered the building. Thanks especially to Rene and Edward for their help. The location is excellent, near bus/cable car stops to various parts of the city, a BART station, and 24 hour food/pharmacy stores on opposite side of road. Also very close to Union Square and great shops, and we walked from the hotel to the Ferry Building and SFMOMA. As has been mentioned, this is an older hotel, so don't expect modern rooms. I am from the UK, so I am used to smaller rooms and this was not an issue. The ceiling fan/TV/fridge and hair drier all worked fine. The bathroom appeared a good size. Nice walk in shower, no bath. The whole apartment was very clean throughout our stay. No breakfast provided, but we loved going out to breakfast at Sears, which is close by, or Union Square for a coffee and croissant outside. There was a small coffee maker in the room. The only downside was noise at night, but I think this was due to being in the city centre. For us, the closeness to amenities and feeling of being at the heart of a beautiful city more than made up for this. As always, it depends what you want from a hotel, but we really enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights and while the location is amazing, the hotel is incredibly noisy. We had a room away from the elevators and facing away from the street, however the walls are paper thin and you can hear absolutely everything. The room itself was well appointed and cosy and fine for 2 adults. A massive shoutout to Mari on the front desk though! She was incredibly welcoming, friendly and so professional and is such an asset to the hotel. Location is definitely a 10/10 and the staff were great; but probably wouldn't stay here again due to the noise.

Great location, one block west of Union Square. Recently renovated by Great Western Hotels, this moderately price lodging property offers great value, with all of the standard room essentials and friendly staff.

The front desk agents working in the evening were very helpful and happy people. The location is a big plus! Very very close to union square and easy to get around other locations such as Fisherman's Wharf. The room was very small, difficult for two people with luggage to fit. Bathroom is very small too. Overall the room was clean and the size could be perfect for single travellers. The money paid is only for the location, not the rooms and services. Parking is expensive in whole San francisco, and also at this hotel. It is not on site, parked one block away in a lot in cooperation with the hotel. Keep in mind that there is no breakfast included in the price. There are plenty of breakfast places around the hotel. If you are looking for a good location hotel then this is a 4/5 hotel for you. If you are looking for comfort and modern interior inside the hotel, perhaps this isn't the hotel for you.

If you're looking for a convenient place to stay near Union Square, look no more! The common rooms are lovely. One can relax by a warm fireplace, chat with friends, or play a board game. Beds are comfy, rooms very clean, bathrooms equipped with all you could want. Ok, rooms may be a bit small, but did you come to the city to sit in your room? If so, go by the fireplace or sit in a chair in the spacious lobby! The front desk staff (Rebecca) suggested a fine place for lunch, was friendly and helpful. Same with the fellow who parked our car. What more can I say except that I hope to return soon!

Very small room but clean and comfortable. Lots of noise from neighbors and from outside (that's San Francisco). Employee very helpful and friendly. Very very close to Union Square, the cable car and the trolley on Market.

Very helpful staff, safe neighbourhood, loved the warm fire and reception on our return each evening. Plenty of nearby food places from 7-11 across the road to upmarket restaurants. Perfect sized room, clean and nocely presented, hot showers, comfy bed, quiet hotel aside from a little outside noise occasionally but hey, you're in the centre of San Fran and cities are busy!!  Loads or transport options within a 3 min walk including city tours. No hidden costs.  Would definitiely stay here again.

The rooms in this hotel are small and minimalist but are perfect for my type of traveling. Definitely designed for you travelers who want to explore the city all day and come back to a comfortable bed to sleep. This hotel is also a perfect location for shopping and restaurants in union square. Overall it was a comfortable and easy stay in the middle of the city.

This was the loudest room I've ever stayed in. They should tell you before booking or at check in. No air conditioning either and you can't open the windows because of the noise. Also someone can crawl across the fire escape from another into your room if the window is open. I don't think they even locked. The 7 eleven is a hub of activity all night out the window. The front rooms should be used for storage if you can't add air conditioners per the city.

I stayed at this hotel as part of a business trip, my work site was at the Philip Burton Federal Building off of Golden Gate avenue, roughly a mile away. Location wise this hotel is central to shops and restaurants. Everything you could need within a 1 mile walking distance to include a Walgreens and grocery store with fresh produce. The staff here is friendly and no issues there. My only issues were that there wasn't a mini fridge or A.C.. The A.C. wasn't that big of a deal not to have buy maybe an issue for some. Overall ok hotel, wouldn't stay here again.

Located in Union square close to many great places to eat and access to easy transportation. No vehicle needed as everything was available by public transportation. Staff was extremely helpful in helping us with the questions we had about how to get to places and also with recommendations on foods and other activities.

Loved this hotel!! I looked for hours for a hotel in San Francisco that wasn't going to charge me an arm and a leg for a one night stay and parking, and finally landed on this place. I couldn't be happier! They check us in early, which was awesome after a long morning of flying, and recommended a great place to eat lunch. The room was super tiny, which I expected from reading the other reviews, but really cute and clean. You definitely won't feel like you are staying in a chain hotel - it has a very trendy, vintage vibe. We walked almost everywhere from this location too: China Town, Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, Union Square. The only downfall of the hotel is that the rooms are not super quiet. I'm good with city noises, but a couple of drunk guests came stumbling in at 1AM one night yelling at each other, and were loud enough to wake me up. Beyond that, this is a great hotel for an extremely reasonable price. Highly recommend!!

Our room was quiet but quite small. The Ike hotel has a real charm. Loved the fireplace in the alcove but it was on too high to sit near - just too hot! Other than that, the rest is the lobby was neat and clean.

I really liked the Cartwright! Wanted a hotel in Union Square within walking distance to a pop-up museum (The Color Factory across the street) Great check-in process-friendly staff and valet parking was a total breeze. Beautiful lobby with several sitting areas and a lovely fire going in the back lobby. I was on the 7th floor and could see the tip of the Transamerica Building from the window. Top notch toiletries and super plush towels. No bathroom fan but the window opened so that was nice. I understand it's an older hotel so the rooms are pretty small but the vibe is good. REALLY liked all the outlets for phone charging-so important these days. The germ free/sanitized TV remote was something I hadn't seen before! Nice! Only thing I noticed was sloppy spackle and paint in the bathroom and rust on some of the fixtures but I give it a "10" for the very pleasant stay overall. No fridge or microwave but the coffee maker worked. There wasn't an ice machine or a bucket in the room but asked at the front desk and the associate brought me a full bucket. Checking out was cool cause while the valet was getting my car, the concierge gave me directions to the Golden Gate bridge. I'd happily stay here again.

I now have to travel to this location often for work. After not liking a previous hotel I stayed at in the area, I decided to try the Cartwright. I'm glad I did. My room had a decent view but most importantly, it was clean, the beds were comfortable and there is a small window AC unit in which I could run the fan for white noise. That's pretty rare in SF. My bathroom was tiny but it had a nice sliding glass door in the shower and a huge mirror in one of the closets. The room itself, I felt was a decent size for just me. The location is nice too. It's walking distance to Market St and many places to grab food or coffee. There's a Walgreens, Starbucks, and 7-11 across the street. The staff is very friendly and there's a nice fireplace downstairs. There isn't continental breakfast but they have coffee and tea. I'll definitely stay here again.

This hotel is convenient, clean, and charming. Room was small, but that's typical for SF. Nice views from 8th floor room. Staff was very nice, free coffee in lobby was good. Pretty fireplace area off lobby.

Just up from Union Square (5 minutes) lies the Cartwright. We had two rooms and both were very small and the bathrooms tiny. Don't be fooled by pictures, they've been taken with a very wide angle lens. Comfortable beds, coffee maker in the room, free tea and coffee in the morning till 11am. Corridor to room feeling a bit tired. Rooms well equipped, nice organic toiletries, plenty of towels and wifi worked well.

Our room was small. However, it was very clean and comfortable for my partner and I. Very comfortable bed with a good size TV. It was in a great location as well, being within walking distance to restaurants, cafes, shops and attractions. Only a short drive to Pier 39. Would recommend.

We stayed at the hotel for 7 nights over the New Year. We had looked at reviews of several other hotels in the close vicinity but finally decided on the Cartwright as it seemed a fair price and the photos looked good. When were arrived we were delighted, the Hotel is located right on Union Square and so is in the centre of all of the activity, restaurants, shops, cable cars etc. We were greeted by very welcoming reception staff who checked us in quickly and efficiently, making us feel at ease straight away. We had requested a quieter room so were given a room on the 8th floor. In this room you could hardly guess that you were in the centre of a bustling city! We were really pleased when we got to the room to find a clean, up to date and inviting bedroom. The size of the room was on the smaller side but we had no problem with this as all we used the room for was to sleep after long days discovering the city and what it had to offer. The shower room was clean and modern. Our rooms were cleaned and tidied everyday, inc, New Years Day. The only thing that we could have used was possibly a small fridge. There were a couple of nights where a few noisy party goers kept us awake on their return for a short while, but I suppose this is to be expected at this time of year and didn't ruin our stay...(we were all young once!) Tea and coffee was served near Reception in the morning, and we used this a couple of times before early day trips. Whenever we had a question or query the staff were always polite, friendly and informative. We would happily recommend the hotel, which has lots of character and was an ideal base for discovering the city...We hope to return one day!

Great place to stay. Just a block from the trolley stop. Staff were very nice and helpful. Room was very clean and modern. Great location to everything. We stayed for 4 nights. This hotel has so much character. Get a muni pass and see the city. The trolley is a great way to get around. Don't over pay at other hotels. Great hotel for a great price.

Parking is reasonable, great pet policy, no breakfast but plenty of places around to service your needs and centrally located to everything San Francisco. We park our car and walk everywhere from here - close to Chinatown and next door to Union Square

This hotel is in a great location, friendly staff, very quiet. A continental breakfast would have been nice, but many restaurants were close. We would stay here again. Highly recommend. Small, but adequate rooms.

Awesome location on Union square. We could walk to the Union square, restaurants, shops etc. The place had its old world charm. The rooms and bathrooms were a bit small and there was no breakfast in the morning (only tea/coffee). But we used our promotion offer of 10,000 points for the room so we were very happy with the hotel.

Friendly front desk staff, and central location next to Union Square. However, rooms are on the smaller side for other comparable hotels in the area. Note that they do not provide breakfast any longer and tea/coffee is provided only in the mornings.

Beautiful staff ! smaller rooms than some places but very close to union square and the Cheesecake Factory ! The newly spruced up rooms are fresh and pretty with super comfy beds! We met 2 of the most beautiful people that work here, with all the knowledge of where to eat & what to see. Edward and Tony you are two very valuable people to the Cartwright and we both wish you all the very best and hope to maybe see you again one day. The staff will go above and beyond to help you out in what ever you need just remember they appreciate manners too just like we do :) Lots of love Dani & Alan x

The location of the hotel is fantastic - 2 minutes walk from Union Square. With that does come some road noise so request a room away from the road. The hotel is nice, very friendly and helpful staff. Everything was clean and neat. The rooms are on the smaller size but do still have everything you need. Overall we were satisfied.

The staff, location and price were Great. but it needs upgrades and the internet description needs to be updated...No Room Service! I doubt I will stay here again but it was a good value. If you are a large person please mention this when you are making reservations, the bathroom I had was very, very small, and I am an average size male

We chose to stay in this hotel because it was in the heart of the action of central San Francisco. We were able to walk to all the major stores and enjoy the Christmas decorations. It was also center to entertainment and restaurants. It provided a comfortable environment in a big city atmosphere.

We stayed here a few days during the holiday.The hotel is a great location with a very friendly staff and so hopeful .We stayed at best western's a lot and found this one very nice. The rooms are small but clean , but this is San Francisco and the charm of the hotel is priceless. I have stayed at a few other small hotels around union square and this one was one of the top. They are a lot of restaurant in the area . We ate at Lori 's diner next store and I did think it was the good. There is a trader joes food store a few blocks away for snacks and misc. the hotel only has coffee and tea in the morning from 7 to 10 , no breakfast. There is a Starbucks at the corner . You can make coffee in the room . I would stay here again.

I arrived at this hotel on 16 Dec, stayed for 1 night. I was booked on the queen size bed room. When I enter the room, the room was very small, and to my Suprise the AC was only producing fan, not cool air. The bed was good though. And the location is only 1 block away from Union Square. I think that is why lots of people tend to choose this hotel. By the corner of the street, there's a Diner, Walgreens and across the street there's a 711. Do not choose valet if you are bringing your car, there's a cheaper parking space around the corner.

Stayed here for a few days and I must say- great location and great staff and service. The room we got was small but modern and clean and it was a big help having a big wardrobe to put out luggage in. Our bell boy was a great help and gave us lots of information about San Fran and the big bus tour. Loved the fireplace too even though it wasn't cold! We will be back

I recommend this hotel. It is very convenient to restaurants, shopping places & transport. Excursion bus stops is just around the corner. There is also nearby Walgreens. I would go back to this place to my family & friends

This is one of the best hotel experiences I've had. Hotel staff was efficient and cheery, always willing to help. We were relaxing at day's end with a glass of wine in the lobby, and within minutes of asking a staff member if the gas fireplace could be ignited, they had a staff engineer on the problem, fixing it while we talked. Everything in the room was very clean, decorated simply and beautifully to fit the urban vibe. Hospitality staff in the hallway were always cheerful and helpful. Up on the 6th floor, street noise was minimum. A couple blocks from Union Square action makes this location ideal. We had a group stay, and I'd stay over and over in the future.

Loved the location, patience of staff, and the modern look of the rooms. Was out and about all day, but the staff was always there to answer questions and provide suggestions. Newly updated but still retains some charm.

Amazing hotel and staff that make you feel like family. This 105 year old hotel is packed with history starting with a fire escape right outside the window. We stayed in a suite and had two rooms that were cozy and comfy. Perfect for our getaway retreat. Location was excellent and we were able to use cable car, bus or Bart to get everywhere we needed to go.

The best possible location, next to the cable cars, Union Square, and excellent restaurants. Comfort and peace at a reasonable price and with great guides and help for tourists. Even a 7-11 and a Walgreens across the street. and Lori's Diner next door, so quick take-outs and good breakfasts.

We stayed at this hotel because of the history, plus the fact it was older and had character. The staff were so much fun, very helpful and made us feel like family. I loved the fact that there was the traditional fire escape outside our window... it added character to the hotel. You could feel the history as you sat by the fireplace, walked up the original staircase and got a taste of bygone days. Truly a wonderful experience. The only thing I would say, the hotel is 105 years old and the heating is steam. Sometimes it didn't work and got chilly but the staff brought blankets and a space heater. Wouldn't trade the experience!

Overall a nice stay. Hotel itself has a historic feel while the rooms are clean and updated. Not a huge room so fine for solo travel or people used to sharing space. Not a great view but I didn't mind since I spent most of my time out of the room. Great location for Union Square, Chinatown, Financial District, etc. Close to some great breakfast/dinner places. It is very central so allow extra time if you are planning to use a ride service during a busy time of the day.

My room at the Cartwright Hotel was small, but clean and perfect for my needs. Knew I wouldn't be hanging out at the hotel, so room size was fine. I was a little challenged by the bathroom mirror, too short to see myself. Thank goodness there was a full length mirror in the room. Price was right, so I would stay again.

A good location, superb and very welcoming concierge staff and free access to tea/coffee, pastries and also IT/printing for guest convenience. The rooms were small but very clean and the only flaw with this hotel is the lack of their own self belief and marketing!!

Although the bathroom is a touch too small for my taste everything functioned perfectly and the bedroom design was very swanky. Overall an excellent choice and a great value for the money. A very nice old hotel in comfortable walking distance from Powell St. Station, Union Square and cable cars. Service at front desk and concierge was more than excellent. Everyone was very helpful. The room was not big, but it is an old building, which is part of the charm and everything was very nice and clean. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and myself stayed here for 1 night whilst visiting the city. The hotel is in a great location with easy access to the train station and trams. It's easy accessible to Union Square which is vibrant and great for shopping! The hotel itself is Great! Small rooms but clean and cosy. The bathroom is very tiny but again, it's clean. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Concierge helped us out with bus tour tickets and kept hold of our bags when we checked out and wanted to carry on exploring. Your only sleeping in the room so if it's a clean, friendly and central hotel you are looking for then the Cartwright is for you!

We stayed here for 4 nights and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location was great only 5 blocks away from the train station which has easy links to the airport. The room its self was small but very clean and comfortable and had all the amenities needed. The bathroom was a little on the small side but this is due to the age and layout of the building and caused no problems at all. Staff were all very friendly and helpful and was able to answer all our questions easily. The fact there was no breakfast did not bother us as there is a supermarket directly opposite where you can purchase breakfast items at a reasonable cost. Overall I would recommend this hotel as it was a pleasure to stay here.

The hotel has an excellent location and is clean but it's also outdated. Personnel is really friendly. Keep in mind that there is no possibility to have breakfast at the hotel. There are a lot of breakfast opportunities nearby, but just keep in mind that breakfast isn't included in the price.

Perfect place for us. We enjoyed the convenience to Union Square. Our room was superior in cleanliness. We parked our car in the hotel's garage and walked and Ubered everywhere. The staff is above average in friendliness and helpfulness. Beyond the lobby is a wonderful area to relax when you are shopped out. Mattress was great! Not a single complaint.

I hidden jewel in the midst of San Francisco! The rooms are amazing and the décor takes you back to the good ole days! A five star in my book!!! If I come back to San Francisco I will definitely stay at The Cartwright. Southwest Airlines ran a great special and they put this trip altogether. The Cartwright is an awesome hotel; it's clean and the staff and lovely and helpful; Kevin in reception deserves a shout out as he went over and above for us. The room was a tad small but was clean and had everything you needed; a great shower and comfy bed. Free and unlimited morning coffee and tea was a blessing. Centrally situated and quiet, we would 100% recommend this hotel. Stayed beginning of Sep 2017. Thanks guys

The check in process was very easy and quick. The room was very clean and it was a quiet hotel. Only thing that was needed was a bigger mirror. The only one that was in the room was the bathroom mirror. Also, the room was relatively small but that is expected when staying in SF. The location was great! walking distance to everything! My overall experience was great and I would stay again!

Feel of a budget boutique but attention to detail of a 4 star chain. Perfect option for those who aren't in their room a lot but want to feel refreshed when they do come back. The small details of maximizing room space were very clever.

The staff at the Cartwright are some of the best I've encountered anywhere. From check-in, to follow up by staff during my stay, to great interactions with the concierge, each and every member of this hotel staff is polite, professional, friendly and concerned about their guests enjoyment of their stay. The hotel itself is centrally located in San Francisco (a couple blocks off of Union Square), near good restaurants, public transportation and is in a good neighborhood. Parking ($35/night self park) for the hotel is one block away, and is secure. Hotel staff will validate and bill you through your room bill if you wish. The rooms have been completely overhauled, are modern and very well appointed. The beds are comfortable and amenities upscale. I have stayed in multiple hotels in SF for business, but this will become my go-to hotel from now on. The rates for the quality can't be matched anywhere else I've seen in SF. The only thing I'd say, is if you don't like white noise, get a room not on the street. SF is a busy, bustling city, even at night. No matter how good the windows, there will be noise.

I stayed for 4 nights here with my wife for sightseeing purpose. The location is quite good, convenience store and drug store just across the street, Starbucks and cable car/bus station just around the corner. 3 mins walk to union square. My room at top floor and face the main street so got a nice view. My room doesn't have A/C but with ceiling fan so it's ok for me(outside temp around 12C), but not sure about the summer time how they improve the inside temp? Oh they serve free coffee from 7-10am at lobby, that's a plus!

Let's start with the goods stuff: small but very cute room with tv and free wifi. Room and bathroom were very clean. However, my room was facing a wall of another building which was very weird. I have never expected any hotel to have such 'views'. Moving on to the least pleasant elements. First thing I have spotted was quite rude staff. The lady who was serving me seemed like she didn't care if I was there or not. She couldn't even bother to take off the headphone set while talking to me. I had no idea if she was talking to me or someone on the phone, I wasn't sure if she acknowledged my presence every time when I got to the reception. Overall, if you are staying for one night - go ahead and book it but if you are planning to stay a bit longer, I would suggest paying maybe a bit more and staying somewhere else.

The rooms are small, no question about it. But the price is so reasonable for the location. And the staff is amazing!! Everyone was so welcoming. The hotel is clean and very well maintained. The bed and pillows were the best out of a two week road trip. Highly recommend.

I like the location and the décor, unfortunately my room was very small approx. 12' X 14' w/ a bath approx. toilet area approx. 2.5' wide. Ok for a small person but not for an average size person. that being said the service was very good and the staff pleasant.

Rooms were pretty small, but very clean and well put together. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the location was outstanding. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to the San Francisco area.

Great location nice remodel, but staff struggles with dealing with any issue. Everything is close by and accessible without driving. Rooms are clean if not a little tight, but normal for the period of building. Staff is good until something unique comes up, then they struggle to adapt.

Very friendly staff, Kevin (I think that was his name) was very helpful with suggestions and directions and was engaging and pleasant. Hotel lobby and public spaces were warm and inviting and have an old school charm. Our room (shared by my sister and I) had 2 single beds. The room decor was nice, good linens and comfortable beds and offered free wifi and ports for cell phone chargers. The only negative (very minor) is that our room and bathroom was tiny, but I think for San Francisco this is common.

My husband and I stayed three nights at this hotel on an extended weekend. This is definitely a small boutique hotel and it had great charm. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, greeting us each time we came and left. The rooms were smallish but that is not unusual for a 100+ year old hotel. Our room was newly renovated and the decor tasteful. The bed was so comfortable with lots of pillows. This location for us was the best. It was a minute walk to the cable car and a block or so from the Union Square shopping and just a short walk to Chinatown. We will definitely stay here again.

Hotel is an older one and the accommodations aren't luxurious, but it's a great value (for San Francisco) in a great location, the staff is friendly, and everything in the room works fine. A bit noisy, but so is everywhere else in Union Square.

Stayed 3 nights. Friendly staff at the front desk!! We had a 2nd floor room looking out at Sutter street. Extremely comfortable bed...lots of pillows. All wood floor. Bathroom and shower were outstanding. This is a small older boutique style hotel with lots of charm. No AC in our room but it was not needed. The ceiling fan was perfect. This was our first time at the Cartwright and we absolutely loved it. Perfect location. Cable car stop is a 30 second walk away. The entire hotel was clean. At 730 am on Sunday we were woken up by a marching band playing the theme song from “Rocky”. The band was in full uniform in front of another hotel at the corner....it was awesome!!!! If you have not stayed in the Union Square area before....you will hear street noise (cable cars, vehicles, people singing, etc...). We think this is part of the charm of the city. If this bothers you, you may need to stay on the higher floors. Our stay here was awesome. Room was cleaned perfectly when we returned in the afternoon or evening. Short walk to Chinatown. Tons of restaurants/diners and bars within a short walking distance. Walgreens across the street. We cannot say enough about the Cartwright!!!

Bathrooms so small you couldn't move around. No breakfast offered as most do at Best Westerns Premier Hotes. Complete renovation needed. They should close hotel and renovate and start over. They took over for the old Cartwright hotel but haven't made the changes necessary to make it a nice place to stay.

I really enjoyed my stay with my friend. We booked this trip last minute to see a show at the Fillmore and we were nervous about what was available just a couple of days before we arrived. We were only there for one night, but the entire staff was helpful and friendly. I will recommend to anyone else that plans to visit San Francisco.

This hotel is in the heart of Union Square with many amenities close by. It is a short walk to public transportation and many of the museums. It is a good blend of an older hotel with modern considerations, internet etc. The staff are friendly and helpful. Although it is in the main downtown area, the noise level at night is quite low.

This hotel was a gem of a find in the heart of San Francisco. The staff more than made up for the smallish rooms. Our room was comfortable, clean and freshly remodeled. You simply cannot go wrong staying here. Plenty of restaurants, bars and shopping within walking distance. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Displaced from my home due to flooding, I spent four nights at the Cartwright with my seven month-old puppy. The staff loved her, and there was no charge, just sign your life away she wouldn't bark (no problem there!) The room was small, but that's Union Square. Bed was amazingly comfortable, I actually fell asleep for an hour when I thought I was just resting my eyes on arrival. My only wish for them is to put in a mini fridge. Okay my second wish would be for a microwave. But again I was displaced and not on vacation or a business tab. It's a great historic hotel, well renovated, and most important to me, they loved the puppy!

The Best Western Cartwright Hotel at Union Square in San Francisco is very nice, clean, and conveniently located next to the famous San Francisco Trolley line. We were here for our son's wedding and dinner, nearby. The suite we booked was great, with the living room overlooking the street. Being on the 4th floor, noise was not an issue. The staff are polite and well dressed with sharp, clean uniforms The bedding was first class, with the best, most luxurious sheets I have ever slept on. Nice place.

My wife and I stayed for our wedding anniversary, and hotel management surprised us at check-in with an upgrade to a suite. (FWIW, I am a BW Diamond Customer, so that may have helped.) The service was top-notch all the way - they were available for questions and responded to requests immediately with a smile. It is a historic building, so we were expecting smaller rooms, but the suite was fantastic. It had a nice living room area with windows on two sides - it felt like our own apartment in the heart of San Francisco. Location is the other advantage of this hotel. You can step outside and see the cable cars going by, walk two blocks to Union Square or catch a taxi or public transportation to any other part of the city. There are a multitude of restaurants and bars within walking distance, which simplifies evening plans. When you factor in the price - better than many other hotels in the neighborhood - the Cartwright Hotel is an incredible value. We would definitely stay here again in the future.

The Cartwright hotel is a boutique hotel in a really great location. Their rates are great for where they are, although the rooms are small and as long as you expect this and are aware of the small rooms then you shouldn't be disappointed. The rooms are spotless though and have mostly everything you would need for a short stay (no fridge though! Which was fine for us). The hallways could do with a bit of a facelift as they are rather dated, but the rooms are modern and clean! We stayed in a room at the Powell side and it was relatively quiet too. It is right off union square and close to all means of public transport, making it easy to get around. It is right off Powell St where the old cable car runs up and down to fishermans wharf and back (though prepare to queue for these!) there is a 24 he Walgreens across the street and a lovely diner on the corner too which is also 24 hrs. There is no bar or restaurant in the hotel but coffee is served every morning, this suited us as we always go out to eat. We also loved that this hotel is pet friendly! The staff we encountered were all lovely and helpful. We would not hesitate to stay here again for sure.

Starting with a great location just one block from Union Square and even closer to the cable car stop, this hotel does not disappoint when you get inside. The hotel is newly remodeled and very comfortable while retaining all of its charm as a vintage San Francisco building. Stayed that the Cartwright Hotel on the corner of Powell and Sutter street SanFrancisco small but comfortable hotel central to Union Square Trolley Cars fine Cafes and restaurants the service was great rooms were small which made it special in an old Hotel built in 1902 . Loris Dinner on the corner of Powell and Sutter was set in the 50s decore food was good and resonsible prices for large meal serves it was nice to dine each night after a long day sightseeing to relax and have a coiple drinks with a good meal

Looking for a hotel near Union Square? This hotel is a nicely updated quaint building and it is reasonably priced (relative to the other hotels in the area). But be prepared - quaint means compact. The room, bathroom, bed were all very good - just very compact (bathroom especially). We had a queen room - the main part of the room was as wide as the bed with nightstands (desk area & bureau beside the bed). There was a good size closet - and although the bathroom was just slightly bigger than the closet - it was updated. There is not a microwave or fridge and they do not have a breakfast - but there is a diner a few doors down and walking distance to a number of restaurants. I would recommend this hotel for the location, updating, & price.

The newly remodeled Cartwright is a wonderfully comfortable hotel in a perfect location to enjoy all that San Francisco's Union Square has to offer. Staff was very helpful and accommodating. Rooms are very clean and comfortable. Easy walking distance to many essentials. Highly recommend this hotel!

We stayed at this hotel for a couple nights and were expecting something more if to be honest. Our room was on the 8th floor at the far back and was very small, had no fridge and had no bath, just a shower. The room was very clean and tidy though. We would like to say a big thank you to Kevin who gave us a good tip about Alcatraz and recommended a very good steak house! Overall experience was good and we'd probably get back here but will upgrade for a better room, shame it was our last few days of holiday and had no spare money this time.

Stayed 2 nights in the hotel while in America. Great stay, lovely room with enough space for 2 of us and really lovely caring staff. Answered any questions we asked of them and helped make the stay really enjoyable. Great location as well, only a couple of blocks from Union square and with lots of restaurants nearby.

A very shabby hotel with no facilities whatsoever. Tiny bathroom! Their motto was bring your own - food, drink (although no fridge in room to store anything), shower gel!!! I do not recommend this hotel.

The location of this hotel is great (approximately 3 minutes walk from Union Square). The rooms were a good size for the price and well maintained. THe staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Downsides were that the lift is often busy (just one lift and relatively small) and that they didn't have a bar or offer breakfast (they do have free coffee in the mornings though).

Position and at present ongoing upgrades to rooms have this hotel within reasonable position to access most cites of interest. Hotel Staff found to be of help and good knowledge regarding sites. Parking of vehicles an issue. costly (Storey car parks costly) Would stay here again,

The bedroom was no more than 10x10 with view of a brick wall 2 feet away. I've stayed in nicer rooms on the small side at hostels and definitely don't feel the room was worth the $200+ I paid. Wall AC unit, not built in. Easy to hear noise in the corridor without the AC on. Bathroom is in need of updating. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We were a bit shocked when we walked into the room and saw how little space we had. Only one person at a time could walk around the room, the pathway was so small, and we are not overweight! No A/C; however there was a ceiling fan which helped. Locks on windows did not work! No screens, which I gather is standard for San Fran. And I was refused a receipt at stay's end. Yes I booked thru Travelocity but I still should have gotten a receipt from the location I stayed at.

No bar, no breakfast, due to renovations. No partial refund offered. Very disappointed. Had to ask for room change as first one was very small. Location good, staff friendly and helpful. Food might have been good, but there wasn't any !!

Overall a very nice hotel in a great location. Ok some parts of the hotel looked "tired" but not too bad. The room was small but comfortable and very clean. Bathroom again was small but we coped with it. Staff were excellent, very friendly and always happy to help with local information. The first room we were put in had a view of a brick wall, when we asked for a new room we were moved without any problems. For a short stay in San Francisco you could do a lot worse! Location was excellent.

The Cartwright Hotel is a very nice and confortable Hotel. It is located in a very central area, near aprincipal square of San Francisco. The staff is very knowledgeable and very helpful. From the hotel you can take any public transport (subway, autobus, tram).

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights after visiting Las Vegas. To be quite honest, it was a huge disappointment compared to where we stayed in Vegas. The hotel has a fantastic location in Union Square, but the room was very small. The air conditioning was poor, therefore the room was very hot and stuffy, and there wasn't a safe. However, it was clean and staff were very welcoming and polite. I would recommend this hotel for the location but that's all.

good service and great customer service. the location is perfect close to everything. only bad thing is parking the hotel offers valet and say its 45 us dollars but its really 512 something after taxes. I would go back though.

We stayed at the Cartwright on the hottest day ON RECORD in San Francisco. We got lucky! They had a turbo air conditioner in the room! Not sure if we'd have stuck around without that. The room was clean and had a great shower. And of course, the location was primo. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I'd stay there again, for sure!

Rather than paying big bucks for brand name hotels, I chose The Cartwright. It was literally around the corner from The Grand Hyatt and the location was just as good. Close to Union Square, Apple Store, Chinatown, cable car, and lots of shopping.

This was my first trip to San Francisco, CA and I as here to drop my daughter off for college. The hotel staff was friendly and the hotel was very clean. The room was a little small and it did not have a refrigerator.

We stayed here as a group. The rooms are a little small but what the rooms lack in size the staff at the hotel make up for in service. The hotel is conveniently located in Union Square with all facilities within walking distance. The rooms are clean and modern and the staff are brilliant. Thanks to Kevin who works at front desk for going above and beyond on numerous occasions. I will definitely by staying at this hotel again in the future and recommending it to friends. Try Lori's diner, Sears Fine Foods and of course Golden Gate Tap Bar as great eating options located within 100m of hotel. Did I mention the cable car stops at nearly you front door. Hotel was clean, rooms were re furbished, every thing you need (i.e. coffee maker, hair dryer , large flat screen TV.etc.). Beds and pillows very comfortable. the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.. Recommend the valet parking. distance to the garage is a few blocks away and can be inconvenient. Walking distance to Chinatown.Rooms are small but standard for a Hotel in a big city setting.I would come back.

Service, comfort, ambience, location, and value: they were all here at the Cartwright. I have stayed at 40 hotels in The City and this hotel ranks at or near the top. The staff was attentive and personable, not the apathetic monotone robots of some properties. My room was small but intelligently renovated with a modern bathroom, including a glass-enclosed shower, and the air conditioning worked well. There was no significant noise from other guests or the street below. And what a great bed. I don't remember a better one in any hotel. The Cartwright felt old-fashioned in a positive way with attractive public spaces which date back some 100 years. But steps from the entrance I was in the heart of modern San Francisco: Union Square, the financial district, and Chinatown. And public transportation stops were near the front door. I have paid more, much more at some nearby hotels; and rarely, a room has cost me a bit less per night in San Francisco. But I have not found a better hotel value in my favorite city. I look forward to many return stays at The Cartwright.

The hotel is at the heart of union square very accessible to all resto, cable car station and shopping. The hotel is very cozy, neat and clean and has an airconditioner which i did not expect at all in SFO which is commo ly has no Airconditioning. The staff is very accomodating and helpful. It is highly recommended to stay at this hotel. Kudos to Cartwright Hotel!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at this hotel. Though it's always hard finding parking in SF, this hotel is only a short walk from several parking places and the room we had, though small, was spectacular. The interior itself feels like the set of a old movie and I adored being able to walk to a bar nearby and have only a short ride to the Castro. Highly recommend (especially to AAA Club members)

Location wise, The Cartwright couldn't be better as Union Square, Chinatown, AT&T Park, Coit Tower, cable cars and piers are all nearby. In fact, we walked to most of these places during our stay. Our room had been recently renovated to a high standard with stylish decor. The only issue is that it did face Sutter Street and, despite being on the 7th floor, there was a fair bit of noise at street level during the night. An extractor fan in the bathroom would have been useful as it got very steamy following a shower. Staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel lobby and lounge area was very pleasant and featured an open fireplace and chess board. There's a great diner on the corner of Sutter and Powell: Lori's, that serves all the American classics. We ate there a number of times and enjoyed the food and excellent decor. The Cartwright would be the first hotel I would choose should I visit SF again.

This hotel is well situated and comfortable. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly, and accommodated our requests. The room was small, but nicely decorated and clean. The price was reasonable compared to other local hotels. We would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others.

Stayed in San Francisco for 4 nights and was given a room facing the sutter street. On hindsight, i should have requested for a change in room because it is so noisy. The room does not come with air-conditioning (only ceiling fan) and so it is really stuffy at night if you don't open the windows. I must admit i am really surprised by the high ratings provided by other fellow reviewers because it is really a dilapidated hotel. Additionally, the hotel is undergoing renovation thus it is very noisy at all times. Further, no refrigerator in the room and no bottled water provided. The only plus side for this hotel is the location - it's near to the Key shopping areas and You can walk from the hotel to ferry terminal and fisherman wharf. To sum up, i will not stay here anymore.

Nicely located with tons of restaurants, shops, cafes and major areas of interest including the Museum of Modern Art, Jewish Museum, Museum of African Diaspora and the Moscone Center a short walk away. The room was very small, as is the bathroom--not much they can do about that given the age of the hotel. It was well kept up and the lobby areas were available to hang out, read, have some coffee or tea and a free newspaper. Free WiFi in rooms a plus, and the staff were very friendly. For the size of the room it was a bit pricey (averaged $206/night after taxes). I understand SF downtown is expensive, but they could do better for retirees, AARP members, those with advance reservations on pricing.

No heat and/or A/C in room. No safe in room. Could not put my head down to spit in the sink because of cabinet placement. No HD quality content on TV. Picture was stretched out, low quality SD feed. Some channels did not have audio.

Great deal for the price. I booked via a smart phone app. prime location. walking distance to union square and a block away from the cable cars. Plenty of restaurants and more importantly, shopping nearby. clean and current room decor. friendly and knowledgable staff.

Myself and my husband stayed here for 4 nights while travelling across America on our honeymoon. The hotel was great and the staff were lovely. The lady on the front desk (can't remember her name) was very helpful with any questions we had about the area or tickets we were looking to buy for various places we wanted to visit. There was tea and coffee available in the mornings downstairs. Would definitely stay here again.

The location is perfect for all things SF. It is close to Powelstreet and 1 block from Union Square. Despite being so close the hotel itself is very quiet. The hotel has a great character in it's decor. I absolutely loved the fireplace. Although in the summer it was very chilly and thw warmth inviting. The people at the frontdesk are very welcoming and fabulous. Great concierge, thank you Kevin. The hotel has no restaurant and serves only coffee and tea in the morning, but there are plenty of great food options nearby. There is Sears Fine Food right around the corner and for snacks there is a 7-11 right accros the street. My room was dpacious and quiet. I never heard a sound on the third floor. The bathroom is kindda small, bit ther is a walk in wardrobe dressing area. There was also an window ac unit which i did not use. The bed was comfortable. Only bummer though i could not connect to wifi from my room, the connection was poor and i had to go to the lobby each time. No biggie though i enjoyed the fireplace. I will definetly be back.
