    « Perfect Location »

Absolutely fabulous - price, staff, amenities, location, room. Out the door is Old Town, great views from private balconies. We can't say enough about this hotel and our experience. Love the fact the the entire property is non smoking.

    « Really good »

Excellent location, nice hotel, breakfast not too good lack quality. Pillows were not too comfortable. Bed was comfortable. Easy access, good value overall. Will stay again at this hotel. The front staff needs to be friendliest, and don't wait until you have four people in line to help.

« Best Western Hacienda Hotel San Diego »

Grate hotel to stay. The layout of the hotel was confusing at first, I guess it is because of its location on the hill side, but I got use to it in no time. I really like the restaurant and their service, the food was excellent. I don't like when the bed sheet is tightly tucked under the matrass so I pulled out the sheet. The room service got the message and leave my sheet un-tucked. I was very happy.

« Beautiful exterior, poor interior »

We booked two rooms for a family getaway. We called to ensure a late check in. No problem when we got there. They placed us in rooms far up the hill and away from the rest of the property. There was no parking available so we had to park downhill and carry our luggage up the long, steep hill. The rooms were small and dark. One had a sink that would not drain. The other had a light that was out, a tub that wouldn't drain, and a TV with a bad connection. The beds were hard as a rock and the rooms were not very clean. We asked to be moved the next day and we're placed in more updated rooms that were closer to parking. The beds were more comfortable and the rooms were cleaner. On the down side, the sound of the freeway and the airport were very loud. The exterior of this hotel is beautiful and it's in a great location right next to Old Town San Diego, but we will not likely return. There are better hotels for the same price in downtown. We will take the trolley from there.

« Our visit was wonderful »

My wife and I recently stayed here for a what was going to be one night we got to the hotel at about 10am on a Saturday and the lady at the front desk(itati I think was her name) checked us in she was wonderful was very happy very customer service oriented made us feel welcome. She had a room for us which was odd for a Saturday but thank God we got one so fast the room was spacious very clean the beds were very comfortable the bathroom was very very clean. The next day we were packing up to leave and because( itati front desk lady) was so nice and made us feel so at home we decided to stay another night.

« Quaint, Lovely Hotel - right at the edge of OldTown. »

Great old Mexican feel to grounds and rooms. Multiple levels can be daunting for walking around and uneven pavement in areas. We had no problems ourselves, and could use the exercise. The Restaurant, Tequila Factory is not part of the Hotel and is detached with a couple of homes between the hotel and the restaurant, which was very nice and reasonable. Hotel has views if you ask for them. You can watch the planes in the distance and the freeway behind the old town itself. We were in town for a Charger game, but will come back for just hanging out in Old Town next time. We were here in November and it was sold out. So make reservations sooner than later. Older hotel.

« Hacienda in Old Town »

Beautiful hotel, in a really convenient location- just park your car and walk in Old Town. The hotel is large, with lots of courtyards and in our opinion larger than average rooms. In building 3 our room opened to a lovely common area with tables, umbrellas and waterfalls. Water is provided, and extras available at reception. You will also be given complimentary drinks coupons for the bar in the restaurant- try the great chips and salsa. But the highlight of our two day stay was Ming on the front desk - she looked after us in an incredible way - ask for her when you check in - she will assist you in every way she can. Tip - if you have AAA or AARP you will get a discount on parking and breakfast.

« BW Hacienda going downhill »

The room that we were given had very uneven heating and cooling. Some of the lamps had burnt out bulbs and the bathtub had a huge gouge taken out of it. The only other bad thing to report were the horrid breakfasts. A huge crowd of people had gathered and there was no food. No coffee either. They had us sitting outside to host a conference in the main dining room. When we did get eggs and other 'hot' items, it was all cold. After two days of that mess, I ate at Denny's instead. In May it was fine--now it's terrible!

« I Love Old Town San Diego »

The Hacienda is a large, sprawling hotel, with a great Mexican Restaurant called The Tequila Factory, with buffet breakfast and lunch as well as regular menu. And a full menu for dinner. I've stayed here every time I go to San Diego and I'm never disappointed. Need a shuttle to the airport? A trolley to all the San Diego area, including Coronado Island, downtown, and Balboa Park with its many museums? Comfortable rooms, patios, pool, everything you need for a great vacation.

    « Wonderful staff! »

We traveled from Oahu with a tour group to see the UH play the San Diego Aztecs an the Tennessee Titans play the SD Chargers. The tour company made a good choice in selecting this hotel. It is located in a touristy section of the city (Old Town) so there were lots of shops, historical attractions, and restaurants within walking distance. A Catholic church is about 150 yards away. The hotel staff was very, very accommodating and cheerful. The cooks at their restaurant, the Tequila Factory, prepare delicious meals. The only drawback is that the layout of the hotel is somewhat inconvenient for people in wheelchairs. The hotel is built into the hillside and there are multiple buildings (nine, I think.) There are lots of elevators but due to the layout of the hotel and our room assignment, we had to use three different elevators to push my Dad to the breakfast room. I highly recommend this hotel for the able bodied.

    « Nice, unique place »

Such unique grounds spread out over several levels and well kept. Rooms have a nice old town touch to them. We always stay here when in town. There may be nicer/newer hotels in downtown SD, but you can get better deals here at the Hacienda. Even at check in, staff was helpful in moving us to a better room location we preferred

    « Halloween fun »

The Hacienda Old Town hotel was a great place to stay on Halloween night. We were right in the middle of the festivities and enjoyed being there immensely. I was in San Diego to attend a seminar and we stayed two nights at this hotel. The whole experience was a positive one.

    4
    « Great location »

This was an excellent hotel to stay in when visiting the Old Town. In the heart of the town with good access throughout so that there is not a long walk to the lobby. Only downside, the bathroom could do with a bit of a facelift but it was very clean.

    « super quaint »

an awesome view of old town, walking distance to everything i wanted to see very confusing to find the room on the first try its like the hotel was a bunch of different buildings combined, pay the rate that is quoted, but soo many other things add up the taxes, the parking at the hotel, etc. so the rate is not what you think it is a buffet breakfast is also included , that was very nice, sitting in the restaaurant overlooking the bay while having breakfast we got a room with a balcony over the pool, awesome to sit out on the balcony some rooms dont have the balcony that is private, i would recommend requesting a room with a private balcony. beds super comfy :)

« Best hotel in Old Town San Diego »

I checked online and was given a quote, then I called the hotel directly and was offered a better rate. I have stayed here numerous times and this was the best stay I've experienced. Check-in was a breeze, the room was better(larger) than I remembered and we were given complimentary tickets for drinks, and breakfast. We didn't use the tickets for drinks(too tired after shopping all day) but we did have their breakfast. Full-on menu. I would recommend this hotel for the best value for your money.

« Located in the historic center of San Dieg and California »

Old historic hacienda style hotel with gorgeous court yards decorated with large pots, flowering plants and water features. Very romantic for events, get a ways or family vacations. Nice pool and Jacuzzi. Rooms are larger because it's an older hotel. Very comfortable. Very nice hotel staff greet you with a smile. It is on a hill, yet 1/2 block from the main street in Old Town San Diego, where California history was made. You'll walk past sites that housed the first printing press and newspaper, one of the oldest active Catholic Churches, lots of wonderful Mexican restaurants, shops containing pottery, gifts, t shirts, . Visit the Bazaar Del Mundo with unique gourmet shops, toy stores and restaurants. All are with in 2 blocks for this wonderful hotel. Take the Old Town Trolley to see more local sights.

« Super nice and convenient »

We booked this hotel mostly because it is situated in Old Town and we were here for the Day of the Dead festival. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Our rooms were clean, comfortable and had a fantastic view of the city. Marvelous sunsets and dazzling night lights from our balcony. The on site restaurant has good mexican food. The morning brunch buffet had a great variety of yummy foods to choose from, including an omellete station and fresh handmade tortillas. Champagne and mexican hot chocolate too. Easy access to the freeway and all the sights San Diego has to offer. I saved two hundred dollars booking through Trip advisor compared to my sister using a different site. Don't forget to enjoy the outdoor pool and soak in the Jacuzzi after a day of sight seeing.

« One night stay in Old town »

I've stayed at the Hacienda Best Western twice now. The location in Old Town is fantastic. The hotel itself is fine. It's a quaint experience. It seems clean, but it's rather old and could use some room updates. The restaurant attached is good, and the rooms come with a drink coupon, so that's a plus! You have to walk and climb a lot of stairs to get to your room here, so make sure you are up for that.

    5
    « Awesome hotel! »

Best Western Old Town was amazing! It's a really beautiful building, and our room was spacious and clean. The welcome drink was an added bonus! It's in a great location, walking distance to so much. I will definitely stay here again next time we're in San Diego.

« Great Location in Old Town San Diego »

If you are planning to visit San Diego and would like a great hotel right in the middle of OLD TOWN this is the one. This is a very clean, friendly and is well kept up with plenty of parking [included with room]. It has a pool and spa in case you want to relax in the afternoon after a full day of shopping and visiting the many attractions San Diego has to offer. Our one-bed room was spacious with cable TV, phone, couch and small table. Free internet in all the rooms. Plus they have a laundry room with washer/dryer for the larger families staying a few days. There are plenty of restaurants close by but no need to walk, they have a wonderful Mexican Restaurant on site [5th floor] and we ate there both nights. I admit it did help that we were given two free drink coupons upon arrival. When choosing a hotel, consider this kid-friendly location to spend some wonderful sunny days is San Diego.

« In the Heart of Old Town San Diego »

Nice location if you want to be in Old Town SD. Rooms were clean but a lot of noise from off site activities, freeway and airport. The Tequila Factory has above average food and the bar serves good drinks. Overall it was a good experience.

    3
« Nice hotel in the heart of Old Town »

The hotel staff were very friendly and attentive. The rooms were clean. We got upgraded to a King size suite. But it was a dark room and very loud. But for what we paid, we cannot complain. Free drink tickets (we did not use) and the parking was a bit hard to get into and out of. The spaces were very narrow. With the cost of the hotel it was $10.00 to park

« We just love this place!!!! »

We have been coming to the Best Western Hacienda Hotel in San Diego for more than 20 years. It's like our second home and everyone there treats us as if we are family! We especially love Room 300 for its size and accessibility to the parking garage and elevator.

    3
    « Old town visit »

The location and appearance of this Hotel decided us on our booking. The rooms were clean, comfortable and quiet. Old town was a treat to browse around and it was an easy walk to catch the Trolley to all the main tourist stops around San Diego. As we were travelling with other family members having them stay in a separate building that required climbing stairs and finding your way around different sections was a nuisance but it was not possible to have us accommodated close together.

    « Anniversary getaway »

The fact that this hotel is located in Old Town is appropriate. The hotel, in general is old and run down. Time to spend some money and update. The architecture of the building fits in with the neighborhood, but once you start looking around, you can see where things just have not been kept up as needed. I dont have enough space to go into details, but read the reviews and you will get a good idea of the problems this property has. I will mention a couple of items that stood out. There are lots of stairs. Beware. You will lug your bags up stairs, and walk a long distance to get to your room. My room had lumpy, worn out carpeting that is well past its prime. Furnishings are just old. Front desk checked us in and when we walked in the room, the beds were not made, nor were there any bath linens in the room. Housekeeping was a issue. One the other hand the wifi worked well and hotel security quickly took care of a noisy neighbor at 2am. I cannot recommend this hotel until they do a major renovation to the property. Many other options in the same area for same or less money. PS. Dont nickle and dime me on parking and resort fees. I am paying for a room, that should entitle me to free parking, and a resort fee should apply to a resort property, not a wore out 2/3 star property. Just charge me for the room and I will decide if I want to stay or not.

« Awesome hotel and staff! »

My wife and I went there for our 33rd anniversary. We were treated like royalty! Best hospitality I've encountered in a hotel. The area was amazing, with shops and restaurants less than a block away. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. The onsite restaurant and bar were top-notch.

    « Had a great stay »

Booked this hotel for a football weekend. Unfortunately my team lost. Had a great experience. The front desk staff at check in were friendly and answered all our questions. It is walking distance from Old Town and all that it has to offer. Parking is extra but it is a garage and seemed to have plenty of spaces. I believe it has a lot used for oversized vehicles as the garage may not fit bug trucks. The rooms were spacious and well maintained. The bed was comfortable and our A/C worked well. There are a lot of stairs and elevators are available. We were on the 3rd level and it had tables and chairs throughout the courtyard on our floor, very nice. We will definitely bring friends here. It runs about $120-200 but I think it's worth it. It is walking distance to the train station if you choose to take it to the stadium definite plus.

    5
    « Excellent hotel »

The service and amenities at this hotel are excellent! The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The food and drinks in the restaurant are a plus. The hotel is located in a very desirable location, close to my business and to Old Town San Diego.

    « Early October »

We are always torn between beaches or Old Town. Love the Hacienda for the ambiance and location in spite of the walking and climbing. Parking has been an issue in the past hwr, was not an issue this visit, Perhaps because we chose week days and later in the season. We have stayed many times over the years and the stay has been consistently good.

    2
    « Poor housekeeping service »

Our room was clean at check-in, but housekeeping didn't even show up the 2nd day, even after I called the front desk. They didn't replace the water bottles, the in-room coffee & sugar, and the dresser drawers even had the previous guests underwear left in the drawer. Lastly, there were garbage items from previous guests under the bed duvet, which should have been easily seen if housekeeping lifted up the duvet when vacuuming. Clearly the room cleanliness issue is a problem

  • 3
    « Nice Area - Average Hotel »

My wife and I spent 4 nights at this hotel. The check in process was very slow plus our room was not available until nearly 4 PM. We found the room to be clean though a bit dated. This main issue is that this hotel is laid out over a really large area and it is not all hard to get lost in the disjointed way things are located. We had to take 3 separate elevators just to get to the floor that our room was on. We were able to get a complimentary ride to the airport from the hotel. All in all it was ok but we would probably try a different hotel next time (in the same area).

    4
« Bad manager on duty »

Hotel is awsome ammenties great close to everything Manager should be fired Hotel was over booked and they tried to get me to take a room that was not what i reserved finally I stood my ground and get a room with 2 beds I feel sorry for the guys that had to be bumped due to their "overbooking"

« Very pretty and perfectly situated »

One of the best I've been too. Lovely decor and gardens . Great staff and although they coudn't find our reservation at first , made us feel very secure and gave us nice gifts to compensate, free parking etc, Would go back for sure... Great view and not too noisy, lovely pool although would be small,if all the rooms we're occupied... Great visit to old town , quaint , touristy....cute

    « Great Location »

Great hotel for vacation and family fun. The quality and service of the hotel staff was outstanding. The location is right in Old Town making it easy access to shops and restaurants. Highly recommend.

« Great hotel in Old Town San Diego »

Picturesque hotel, good location, easy to walk to many shops and restaurants. WIFI good, awesome breakfast. Friendly staff. Complimentary drink upon check in at the Tequila Factory (rooftop restaurant). Meal at Tequila Factory was very good. Free shuttle to airport and other points of interest. No need for a car. No complaints. Would definitely stay here again!

« One of my favorite hotels in San Diego »

A treasure in Old Town San Diego, a charming hotel with a wonderful staff, a great restaurant, excellent margaritas, and walking distance to the trolly and some of the best Mexican restaurants in the U.S. All this and costs much less than the fancy downtown hotels.

    5
« Best in Old Town San Diego »

The greatest place to stay. All San Diego comes here for the food in Old Town. Many attractions are just minutes away. The zoo, Balboa Park and all its attractions, the Mormon Battalion building, the Mission San Diego. The air port is near by, a very short trip. You can take a trolley ride from Old Down all around the city

    4
    « Anniversary weekend »

Nice rooms, excellent restaurant and Tequila bar. We wanted to go Ruth's Chris steak house for our 24th anniversary and were waiting for a cab for the 3 mile ride when the hotel offered to take us there. NICE! They offer shuttle service within 5 miles, When we were ready to back to the hotel they were there in a flash to pick us up

    « Hotel Stay Review »

As usual we enjoyed our stay in Old Town San Diego. We love the Best Western Hacienda and always stay there when we visit Old Town. The stay was fine however I am a little concerned that the plumbing may be being neglected a bit. The bath/shower plumbing mostly. The bath faucet is not attached properly (not up against the tile). I had to hold the bath faucet with one hand while I pulled on the lever to switch it to the shower. This is in room 103. Also the pocket door to the restroom is a bit tough to open for us older folks. We will continue to visit Best Western Hacienda and we are hoping this issue is not due to neglect.

    4
    « Loved the Hacienda »

I stayed here after a Charger's home game. The price was a bit expensive for a one night stay, but this hotel is beautiful. I forgot I was in San Diego as the expansive grounds reminded me of a resort in Mexico. The rooms have been updated a bit and the beds are very comfortable. Pillows are a bit hard. The staff was warm, welcoming and very helpful. The parking seems to be a bit limited as does access to the main parking garage. I will definitely be back!

    « Girl's Weekend »

Very well-located hotel in Old Town San Diego. A short Uber or Lyft ride to downtown, gaslamp, seaport village. Easy to walk to the restaurants and bars in Old Town. Conveniently located by the Trolley. Great place.

« Great area and hotel »

This great Mexican style hotel is perfect for business and pleasure. Great staff, extremely courtesy, excellent amenities along with a fantastic restaurant and bar . The entire staff goes way out of their way to accommodate and pamper you.

    « Wedding »

The wedding reception was great service with food and bar and cleaning staff at the reception, would go again, fantastic that they let us check in early I was traveling with my two kids and my 82 year old mother that uses a rolling walker they put us on the same floor as the reception and we only have to travel maybe 400 yards to our room. Thanks

« Relaxing San Diego Getaway »

We were in town for a Marine Corps Reunion and the group stayed at this hotel. The location was perfect! It was minutes from the airport and the Marine Corp Recruit Depot. Lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance. The hotel is spread out with many areas to sit, relax and just enjoy the beautiful southern California weather. The front desk staff was very friendly and accommodating. Initially, we were placed in a room with a beautiful view and balcony. Unfortunately, our room did not have elevator access and I had recently broken my ankle. My husband asked the front desk if we could move to a room close to an elevator and they quickly accommodated. Our only issues: The room was a little outdated and the beds were not the softest but we didn't spend a lot of time in the room anyway. We would definitely stay again.

    4
« Great location for Old Town »

This is our go to place in Old Town. After a few Margaritas at any of the restaurants it is a short walk back to your room. It is also located near the Red Car Trolley station that can get you to downtown or the East County. The hotel is on a hill with several different building connected by plazas. The rooms are nice and clean. Building 600 is the furthest up the hill. While it does have it's own parking area it is still a hike to get to it even with elevators if you are walking to the Old Town restaurants. WiFi at the three hot spots is okay but can be slow in some of the rooms. The pool and hot tub were clean and nice.

    3
    « Lower level Loud »

Try to get and upper level room. lower level rooms backing restaurants (Fred's) was noisy with deliveries, garbage trucks, employees, etc. unless you care not to sleep. hotel staff, pool, sitting areas and access to old town are awesome.

« Trip to San Diego »

I've taken a lot of business trips, and this was the most relaxing. There were lots of outdoor spaces where I could sit and do work. The staff was excellent. The restaurant on site had great Mexican food (including chilaquiles with breakfast!). It's conveniently located.

« Looking for character and comfort? This is the place. »

A simply magnificent hotel. It is a labyrinth over 5 acres but it works in a charming, relaxed way. G & I loved it and have already booked return stays. It is in the heart of Old Town, San DIego - a wonderful, magical area filled with...well go there and see for yourself. There is a welcome and surprising depth to this hotel and area - take the time to walk and investigate. Everyone has a story they are more than willing to share.

« Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town, San Diego »

Nice place to stay in San Diego. Old Town has gotten quite "touristy" (bad food, lots of junk shops), but is still a fun place to visit. We had a nice room. Clean, comfortable and well furnished. Parking in the garage is tight, but plentiful (which is more than can be said for the rest of old town). BW has an on property restaurant which is as good as any of the others in Old Town. I love sitting out on the patio and soaking up the San Diego weather. There is a feeling of luxury associated with the property.

    4
« Great Location in Old Town »

Cool hotel/resort in Old Town, close to everything. The hotel has many buildings, and extends up a hilly street. We were at top level, with a great view of Old Town and ocean. Tequila Factory restaurant on site--great food, drinks, and view of the city! Highly recommended!

    « Great location »

Came to watch a Chargers game. Picked this best western since it was located near the trolley and I liked that it was in old town. Staff was friendly,Check in went smoothly. The room was in the 300 area. It was pretty clean except for the air vent in the bathroom and the bottom shutter of the door was a little broken but not very noticeable. I would stay here again next time I come in for a visit.

    3
    « Strange hotel »

Multiple buildings on a hill all connected by various walkways. Rooms are slightly older and the first one we got was not good at all. The carpet was not damp but actually soaking wet. So much so that when we stepped off it onto the ceramic tiles, my colleague actually slipped. They must have just steam cleaned it, but it should not have been open to guests yet. Anyway, they made good buy giving a free breakfast for two and waiving the parking fee. Yes...note! You are in the city and close to the airport so parking is $16 per day and breakfast is not included. Location is good if you want to walk to the old town and eat a good variety of Mexican restaurants and see novelty type shops.

« Wonderful Location and Amenities »

My wife and try and make the best of our trips a little business and a whole lot of pleasure. That is what we had during our recent stay. We parked on Saturday evening and did not see our vehicle until checkout on Monday. Sunday brunch was excellent and for the first time we felt like we got our moneys worth while watching football. Monday morning the complimentary continental breakfast was not the normal continental breakfast it was full coarse. So we definitely enjoyed our stay.

« Friendly service, but dated hotel »

I stayed at this hotel on a business trip based on recommendations of other co-workers. I am not a fan of Best Western hotels, and my stay at the Hacienda confirmed why. Check-in was chaotic, as there were several guests at the front desk waiting to check in and only one clerk to assist. Another clerk was milling around not doing anything. I stayed in Building 6 and the room was dark and musty-smelling and I had to open the windows to air it out. There was hair in one of the bathroom sinks, and the other sink had a wobbly faucet that was coming out of the sink itself. I did not have any hot water for a shower the first night I stayed, but then I had hot water the second day. Cold showers after a cross-country trip are not fun. Internet access is problematic, and I couldn't connect, despite multiple attempts. I called the front desk to let them know about the water and internet issues, and they said they would send a maintenance person up, but no one ever showed up. The buffet breakfast was sub-standard, as it was only eggs, sausage, toast, cereal, waffles, juice, with limited healthy options and no fruit at all. On a different note, the room was quiet and the free dinner coupons were a nice touch. The dinner options in the restaurant are very good, a far cry better than the breakfast options. Hotel does have a free shuttle to/from the airport, and it's a quick 15-minute ride. Staff also made a taxi reservation for my co-workers and I due to an early morning flight when the shuttle does not run, and the taxi was waiting for us when we were checking out. Staff, with the exception of the check-in staff, were all very friendly and tried to be as helpful as possible, but given the condition of the hotel and the problems I encountered with the room itself and internet, I would not recommend the Hacienda. There are better options in the Old Town neighborhood.

Like the fact that we did arrived at 9:30 am and they did check-in us at that time. That was awesome. We were very tired after a very long trip to get there. Very helpful and friendly staff . I was surprised that the breakfast wasn't included and the room need to be updated.

« Colonial Style in the Middle of Old Town. »

Charming colonial hotel within walking distance of many restaurants, shopping and other points of interest. The front desk person was nice and took her time explaining parking and other amenities. We booked a room for four and were happy to get queen beds and a sofa/twin bed. The view from our building was lovely.

    « Fabulous »

We always stay here when we are in San Diego. It's the best for staff, location and comfort. The hotel is unique and beautiful. We love the fact that it is so close to everything we want to do in San Diego. Old Town is one of our favorite spots.

    « Amazing Views »

This is a really unique large hotel complex with many tiers and levels and great views. We could walk right off the complex into Old Town so were only minutes away from the atmosphere and restaurants.

« Great place to experience Old Town San Diego! »

If you want a romantic get away with your significant other, this is by far the place! The hotel is very comforting and welcoming with the theme of Mexico and the staff is very friendly and nice. Make sure to check out the many shops in Old Town San Diego before you leave this incredible hotel. The only thing I would suggest for this hotel is better beds. They have really hard beds. Would recommend getting a room with thicker mattress.

« Great Hotel near Historic Old Town »

I've stayed at the Hacienda half a dozen times. Each time the room has been clean, staff friendly and helpful, and I love the food at the restaurant. I've always been able to use the El Presidente special which includes breakfast buffet, dinner and 2 drink tickets. It's located right in the heart of Old Town so it's perfect for visiting the area. It is a very large campus, so getting around can be a chore, but it's also very beautiful and worth exploring.

Haven't been here in a long time. Glad we came back. Rooms good size, beds fine. We stayed in the 800 building which was fine. A/C fairly quiet. Room did face the side street, not noisy, but the street was blocked off for repairs so came say it is always quiet. Last time we were here there was a problem with parking. Not this time (it was just past the major summer season). We were give a coupon for welcome drink and some for buffet breakfast at the attached restaurant, both were good. Will be coming back.

« Old Town San Diego »

This is a very nice hotel we stay at for an annual trip. Walking distance to all of Old Town. Easy trolly access. Only thing is there are lots of stairs at this hotel other than that it is a great place to stay.

    « Enjoyed my stay »

This hotel was surprisingly nice! I enjoyed the maze like set up because of the views and the setting. I also loved that they gave me two free drink tickets and a free breakfast buffet upon my arrival. The only negative was that the bed was not very comfortable, however, I would stay here again.

    « Love the location »

We love staying in Old Town. Convenient walking distance to the many restaurants and bars. The trolley is also close by for traveling downtown or to games. The hotel itself is very comfortable and offers great views from most rooms.

    « A big plus a big minus »

You cannot beat the location because it's it's in the heart of Old Town. You're several blocks from the trolleys which San Diegans use for transportation. We were in building 600 which is in the very far corner. A very long walk from the lobby. My company paid for this room and it was obvious they tried to save money. Room was worn, beds were so so, light fixtures were very old and Internet was spotty. If I were to come on my own I would gotten a nicer room (I believe they had some but this booking was out of my hands). Gym was a joke and they were better off not even having one. Again not all bad but it wasn't all good either.

« Great location that is starting to show its age at the edges »

Just came back from staying there for two nights. My room was great, but you could tell it is a little worn. The furniture is showing its age and the flat screen TVs look old. The advantage of staying here is really the location. You are right in the heart of Old Town. Tons of restaurants plus the hotel gives you a comp breakfast and supper plus a lot of free drink coupons. The staff at this hotel is super friendly. Everyone I encountered was so nice. They really make it so that you want to come back. I am not a big Best Western fan. I prefer Hilton or Marriott, but when it comes to San Diego, this place will get my business because their staff is first rate.

« Not so happy stay »

Check in very delayed because room not cleaned. Room cleaning service always very late, one day not able to be cleaned. Wi-fi spotty at best. Had stayed there before and went back because we were happy with stay. This time- not so much.

    « Best Western Hacienda »

It's fair. This hotel used to be excellent but seems to have gone downhill with new owners in the last couple years. Was once one of my favorites (have spent 200+ days there for work, but the food and bar attributes have declined significantly.

« ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE HOTELS »

I've stayed at Best Western Hacienda in Old Town San Diego dozens of times over the past 20+ years. It remains one of my favorites. Such a beautiful location, and the hotel is consistently clean and comfortable. The rooms are nicely decorated in a South-Western theme, the views are amazing, and the staff members are all friendly and professional. The location is perfect, situated in its "own little world", yet close to everything in San Diego.

« Good value and location »

Easy access to Old Town, Heritage Park and trolley for going downtown Rooms are very large. Some open to courtyard with possibly sounds from other patrons. Some have big views. Restaurant onsite, old tequila factory, is very good with large portions.

Clean but outdated. Was in a good location for visiting Old Town. Internet did not work. Staff was excellent and very helpful. The shuttle was clean and always on time. The bathrooms very old but clean. This hotel was okay overall but could use some major renovations.

    « Lovely hotel »

We loved this hotel and it was our favorite hotel of our USA trip. The rooms are massive and have 2 queen beds which was perfect for our family of 4. The old city in San Diego is just beautiful and had a lovely feel about it. The restaurant on site was big and you could sit outside with lovely views. Our stay included breakfast which was great and we also got a welcome drink there. There is a pool and hot tub on site which was nice to use after a busy day of sightseeing. We would definitely stay her again.

    « Fantastic »

Beautiful hotel. Staff was always helpful. Great restaurant right on the property. Rooms are spacious and clean. Highly recommend to anyone in the area. One block from the main street of Old Town that is loaded with restaurants, bars, and shops. They also have a free airport shuttle.

« Loud, dirty and crowded! »

We stayed here for my cousin's wedding which was in Old Town. We wanted to stay within walking distance of the wedding and needed a pool for our kids. This was the highest ranking hotel that met those requirements. In all fairness, I've not stayed at a Best Western before, so I didn't know what to expect - but the mixed traveler reviews had me concerned. I should have listened to my gut and stayed elsewhere! We checked in around 2:30pm and were told our room was not yet ready but the cleaning lady was in there and would be done in a few minutes. After waiting about 30 minutes we were told the room was ready and given our key with directions on where to park. Parking in the lot is confusing and difficult to find a spot, we were told to park on a particular level but there were no spots available on that level, so we parked a few floors up. After unloading all of our kids and bags (no bell staff available to help) we proceeded on a 15 minute tour of the hotel before finally finding our room - it was a maze of confusion! When we arrived at our room the maid was still inside cleaning - not a problem for us as we were just dropping our bags and heading straight to the pool. BUT, a big problem for her! She absolutely refused to let us in the room to drop our bags until she was finished cleaning despite the fact we clearly had been checked into the room and had room keys. I insisted she call the front desk because after 15 minutes dragging our bags and kids all around the property trying to find our room I was not about to drag it all back to our car just to wait for her to finish cleaning. She huffily agreed to let us drop our bags. When we finally returned to the room it was still dirty - hairs in the sink, crumbs on the floor, a foul smell in the room. We booked the "Presidential Suite" which had a separate bedroom and living room with a large patio. What they failed to mention is that this room is located immediately next to the common gathering area in the hotel where the bbq is located. The entire area was occupied by a minimum of 50-75 people from the moment we arrived until the moment we went to sleep (and again the next morning!). They essentially turned the area into a tailgate party, with pop up tents, tables, chairs, music, food. Great fun for them, not so much for us sleeping in the room with two children and a party going on 24/7. We had to squeeze through them (waiting for them to finish conversations, move their bags as we politely asked to get through to access our room) every time we wanted to get into or out of our room. The pool was a huge disappointment. No more than 12 lounge chairs and two tables with chairs - all occupied at 3:15. No clean towels, no ice or water, no pool restroom (wonder where all those kids decided to pee?) and no pool service for food or drinks. I never saw a single employee at or around the pool in the 2 hours we were there. Maybe this is standard protocol for a BW Plus, but at about $450 a night I expected more, and clean towels at a minimum. Bottom line, at the price we paid there were many better options nearby. Yes, we would have had to drive (or take an uber) but it would have been worth it to at least enjoy our vacation.

« Good stay expect for food »

This is a great hotel in the heart of Old Town that we have stayed at for the last five years. I had a major issue with how the dealt with their complimentary breakfast buffet this year. In the past you could sit anywhere in the restaurant and the buffet was located in the main room. Now, the regular buffet is off tot the side next to the bar on folding tables, the choices are limited and the presentation is sloppy at best. It also ends at 9am on weekends. They do this because they now have a "pay" buffet, which is loctaed in the main room, and those customers can sit anywhere in the restaurant.

    4
    « Beautiful setting & Outdoor Patios »

Good value. Patio and outdoor/pool areas were delightful. Was also great to be able to walk down the block and be right in the heart of Old Town. Nice staff. Rooms are basic, but served our family of five quite well. Would definitely stay again.

« You can't beat the location, but »

What you probably care about most: the room and the bed. The rooms were awkward. There were two random doors in the middle of the hallway and found out that this was not a closet and was our neighbors room when they tried opening the doors multiple times. The walls were paper thin and could hear our neighbor's conversations and television. The room itself was tiny with just enough walking room on either side of the bed. The bedroom door would not close because of the bedside table being crammed in. The bedside table had too much stuff on it for us to charge our phones. The bed was nice, but the pillows were terrible. Very lumpy and uncomfortable. The sheets were your typical hotel sheets. A little stiff and scratchy but not horrible that you can't sleep. We were steps away from the Whaley House (as in 300 feet maximum). This also means steps away from Old Town with a unique culture and amazing restaurants. It was busy on the weekend, but died down Sunday night and was tolerable on Monday and Tuesday. The hotel was very beautiful, but reminded me of a maze trying to find the restaurant on site (Tequila Factory). Parking was not ideal, especially when checking in to the hotel. The front desk was kind and gave us a map to our room as well as complimentary drinks. With all of that being said, I would stay here again if they had a discount or if I had points to redeem. I would not stay here again for the price I paid.

    3
    « A Different Stay »

The room is bigger compared to other Best Western Plus I have stayed. There was only one soap available for bath and hand-wash. Wifi did not work for any Apple devices. There were also train noisy during night time. There are meals available with the associated restaurant, Old Town Tequila Factory, which we did not have good experience. The dinner was good and the night staff, Jose was nice. The next day we went for breakfast buffet (not free), the waitress assigned to the area never shown up and the front desk staff had to trace her down so we could pay. It was the only time she showed up and she had to wait until you sign the payment, What a surprise!

    « It Was Delightful »

Great one night stay. We were right in the middle of Old Town and I appreciated that. Not too close to the highway, and right off the main street so getting to restaurants was easy. They have a restaurant on premises (Tequila), but from our room, it was far! The restaurant is nice, though, and the breakfast is good. Hot breakdast buffet, no small continental. This hotel is bigger than you'd think. If you stay near the front, you really have no idea. Since we were there for one night only, we had no use for the pool, but if we did, we'd have to walk a bit. Parking is pretty easy, but on a weekend evening it is a bit harder to get a spot. Still, we got one. The staff was super nice. Because we were there for a really unique and special occasion, they validated our parking as a nice gift. Hey, that meant a lot to me! The room was clean, a bit of old-Spanish style. And I loved the lobby. Yes, I'd stay here again.

« Nice Hotel If You Don't Mind Smokers »

Beautiful hotel situated in tiers on a hill overlooking San Diego. Clean rooms, pool, workout facilities and the Tequila Factory Restaurant. Even though there are nonsmoking rooms, this property is very smoking liberal. If you don't like the smell of cigarettes or cigars wafting its way through the common areas, this hotel probably won't be for you.

« Great Location but depends on which room »

We really loved this hotel, but had to change rooms. Originally I had booked a "King Suite" for myself and my daughter and son-in-law. I was thinking I would sleep on the sofabed in the living room and my kids would have the bedroom---WRONG. That sofa bed is NOT comfortable for an adult. In addition, the bathroom is very small. The next day I changed rooms to a double-queen room. MUCH BETTER. Even though we were all in the same room, there was plenty of room for all of us. The bathroom is large AND it has two sinks: one inside the bathroom and shower area and one outside the bathroom in case someone wants to put on makeup while someone else is in the bathroom. Pillows were not very comfortable, but that is just my taste. We liked the location. I grew up in San Diego and I think Old Town is kind of cheesy, but my daughter and son-in-law loved it. They enjoyed looking at all the knick-knack shops. I enjoyed plenty of great Mexican restaurants in walking distance, being close to Mission Valley, the airport, Gas Lamp, etc. I would stay here again.

« Great Place to stay while at Old Town »

Hotel is in the budget hotel range - not luxury accommodations. The room was adequate and location to old town is great. We very much enjoyed staying there. The hotel is done in a Mexican American style and is very nice.

« Always an enjoyable stay »

This is the 3rd stay at the BW Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town and I plan to return when going back to SD. The employees are friendly and helpful. The beds at this place are just DELICIOUS to sleep in - it is so hard to get out of bed! Location is great if doing the Trolley Tours or public transportation. Great places to eat nearby.

« Great Hotel, Best Western Quality »

This is a very charming hotel. Older, but charming. It hasn't seen an update for about 50 years, but it works. It is well maintained and clean and what a venue. It sits on the side of a very steep hill, so if you have a fear of heights, ask for a lower floor. There are elevators, but LOTS of steps, so again, if you have trouble with stairs, ask for a lower building. The staff was wonderful and the beds comfortable. As I said, it is older; the toilets and bathtubs are brown, which in itself is refreshing and a change from all the newer, sterile fixtures in other hotels. It was quiet and we were in a building that was at the top of the hill and could see all of San Diego to the South and West. There are chairs outside the rooms (all doors face the outside). This is also a pet-friendly hotel. We were leary about the cleanliness and possible dog odor. None here. The carpets were clean and the amenities were sufficient. As far as "potting" your little one, there is an amazing park on the back of the hotel that looks like a picture out of a Victorian magazine. You will be pleasantly surprised even if you don't have a dog. Breakfast is not included with the hotel room charge, but for $11.00 more, you can eat all you want at a wonderful breakfast buffet in the restaurant attached to the hotel. I would recommend doing so as the view from the glassed-in patio is spectacular. A few steps outside the lobby door and you are in Old Town San Diego where all the action is.

« Best place to stay near Old Town »

We stayed in suite 309. The room was big with plenty of space, but the sink area outside of the bathroom is TINY. The room was clean and well kept. It can get noisy from time to time if people decide to sit at the tables outside the rooms (see pic). Also, it gets noisy with people rolling their luggage, pulling the luggage cart, or housekeeping pushing their carts, as it is done on concrete. The hotel itself is large and beautiful. It almost has a Mexico resort type feel to it. Especially, with the aroma of Mexican food from all the nearby restaurants. Speaking of restaurants. All of them in Old Town are within walking distance. We were given complimentary parking in the hotel garage and tickets for complimentary breakfast buffet served upstairs at the Old Town Tequila Factory for both days of our stay. The buffet was decent. They served pancakes, French toast, sausage links, hash browns, and scrambled eggs. I think they also had some cereal. You can sit outside on the rooftop or inside. Overall, it was great hotel. You can't beat the location. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it for anyone staying in the area.

    « Picture Perfect »

I only got to stay at the Hacienda for a few hours. I was on a business trip and set to return home when a traveling companion had an emergency necessitating the stay. Staff helped in locating needed services and made a terrible situation so much better. The property is absolutely lovely. In the few spare minutes I had while waiting for a cab to pick me up, I ran around quickly snapping photos so that I could remember the beauty of it! The rooms were immaculate and had every comfort. I hope I will get the chance to stay there under good circumstances so I can enjoy it more and explore the surrounding area which was so darling!

« Good hotel with a couple of issues »

This hotel has a somewhat distinct appearance. It is low rise and right in the heart of old town San Diego. Generally, the staff are quite good and helpful. I was also given a ride to the Bus terminal. Two issues during my stay were: the bathroom had no door. This is the first time, I experienced such a situation. The internet was simply the worst of any hotel that I have used for the last couple of years.

« Great stay in Old Town San Diego »

Five former high school friends and I (from Oregon) celebrated our 61st birthdays by staying here two nights. We enjoyed seeing Sea World's fireworks from outside one of the rooms we had. Rooms were clean, staff was friendly, and location was great!

« Good location but definitely better for families »

We stayed here as a couple for three nights as it was near a conference I was attending. Our room was about as far from reception as was possible but up the hill so we had great views. Our room was spacious and the bed comfortable albeit pretty basic. It was quite hot while we were there and the air conditioning was reliable. The staff were friendly and helpful including the shuttle drivers who were more than happy to take us where we needed to go. What was a real problem was the wifi or lack of it. We had the very helpful maintenance man change the modem and wifi router on more than one occasion but it still was at best unreliable. Breakfast was included in our rate. Very narrow selection. Overall it's a very convenient place for Old Town. Easy to get to San Diego Downtown and the train. This is a hotel for families and perhaps not so ideal for couples.

    3
« Location is awesome, hotel needs work. »

At the edge of Old Town, it is perfect walking distance to everything in Old Town. The train/rail station is a ten minute leisurely walk to/from the hotel and the restaurants in Old Town are really good. The hotel has a restaurant on site with a good breakfast buffet open from 6AM and sitting outside gives you a nice view. Parking is well hidden but there is ample parking. It is $16 a night. There is a pool with a jacuzzi, a fitness room with four cardio machines (treadmill, elliptical, sitting pedaling, and a step machine) along with a four station all in one weight machine. Just note that there are a lot of stairs to get to most rooms. One could take the elevator to a point then take stairs to get to the level of your room. In fact there were situations where I went up roughly ten steps and go back down the same amount just to get to where I wanted to go. In other words, there were times I had to go up then down a set of stairs just to get back to the same level. Being that the hotel is on the side of a hill just accentuates the fact that there are a lot of stairs. There is wifi but it is inconsistent to say the least. The moment I was connected, I was disconnected just as fast and found my computer and phone searching for another connection. The Ethernet connection in the room (in my room at least) was absolutely useless. When following the cable, it was not even connected to anything. When I tried to connect everything to the router, nothing happens. The rooms are simple, clean, and comfortable. Each room is given two complementary 0.5-liter water bottles a day so drink them. The room has a coffee maker to make one cup of coffee at a time, a microwave, small refrigerator, iron and ironing board, and safe. There is a small couch that one may use as a pull out bed as well. If you are a light sleeper like I am, just note that one can hear planes taking off from the airport beginning around 6AM. The staff is tremendously nice and professional. The grounds are clean and beautiful. It is a great family hotel but to get work done in the room was a challenge.

    « Great hotel, can't go wrong! »

Customer service wonderful! Responsive to guest needs first and foremost! Perks include free dinner (& not just a bite), free drinks, great location to sight see old town! Building 7 while closest to lobby was LOUD! asked to be moved and was shown a room in 400 building that was awesome. If you get a less than desirable room, just talk to the front desk staff. They really with hard to please. Shuttle driver was great also, you can't go wrong here!

    « WOW what a great find »

This is by far one of the best hotels I have stayed at. The customer service is hands down the BEST, everyone is super friendly and extremely helpful. It all started with Zachary the most amazing shuttle driver EVER which the shuttle is free for hotel guests He is super friendly and really knows a lot about the area and is willing to go above and beyond to make sure your time there is perfect Thanks Zach. Now the property its self is massive but beautiful take the map they give you look at then find a nice employee to help you find your room. We had to take 4 elevators to are room which was fine because the view along the way was fantastic, if you have a car you can drive to your room a little quicker. Once at the room i was very happy is was big and super comfortable and most importantly quite. The hotel is in a great location right in the heart of old town and just a short walk to the trolley but if you don't want to walk Zach will drop you there. I can't say enough great things about this place other then you need to go and see for yourself how wonderful it is .

« Best Western Hotel - Old Town »

My wife booked a room for several nights so we could explore Old Town and go to Del Mar horse races for opening day. Hotel has a nice ambiance. Much different than the standard Best Western. It is spread out on a hillside and there are several buildings. Parking in their garage can be a challange! For the most part the staff was caring and helpful. Check in can be arduous, but try and be patient. We plan on returning to Old Town with some friends and another couple enjoyable days exploring the area.

    « What a Terrible Expierence! »

My entire family went to San Diego for a wedding reception in Old Town. My husband and I booked far in advance the best suite they had and my daughter and two grandchildren booked the next best suite. My son booked two other rooms since there were no more suits available. From the moment we arrived there were problems. Registration was a nightmare with each person taking 10-15 minutes to go through the process. After waiting in a long line we were told our rooms were not ready. We then came back an hour later had to wait in the line again and found out only one room was ready. Parking was truly beyond disgusting. I have a large sedan and our daughter has a large SUV. None of the spaces were large enough and there are at least 6 floors. The worst part is you can't reach the hotel from the parking structure until you take two elevators!!! Our room was like a giant shell of a room. One room had to murphy beds, the other huge room (it was originally a conference room) had only 6 pieces of furniture on dirty floors and the air conditioning (free standing with large black hoses running from it) did not work. The worst part of this cavern was there were NO WINDOWS!!! Also what they called pillows were hundreds of pieces of rough foam stuffed into a pillow case which made sleep almost impossible. When I called to see if we could have other pillows I was told they were all out! The bathroom was barely large enough for one person! My daughter's suite was in an alcove and very dark. This was the room that was supposedly ready. The housekeeper accosted them when they tried to put their luggage in the room so they could sit by the pool until she was finished. Even though they were told the room was ready she would not allow them access just to deposit their things! Also it was almost impossible to enter the room since a huge private barbeque well over 75 people, was going on right outside of their entrance. They were very loud and boisterous and having fun but it went on for hours and hours. The entire experience was so disappointing to everyone from our party who stayed there. The final insult was when my daughter was emailed her receipt there was a $250.00 surcharge for "the smell of marijuana" in her room! OMG but what a mistake. When she called she was told they were sorry they must have gotten the wrong room number!!!! I would give it zero stars if I were allowed. We wanted to be in Old Town and that was our first and biggest mistake! Absolutely go anywhere else but this hotel. It is called a Best Western Plus. Can you imagine just a plain old Best Western???

« First Stay Here And It Wont Be The Last »

Finding a hotel to stay at when you aren't all too familiar with the city is a difficult task all on its own. Add having to plan out a trip to Comic-Con in a place that you've never stayed at adds a lot more uneasiness when booking. Thankfully this place was great overall, and I had no problems with the staff, location, or cleanliness of the hotel. The only con to this place was that it can be tricky to find your room the first time you're looking for it.

    3
    « Ummmmm.... »

Nice location, attractive grounds and a great top floor restaurant. However the Front desk staff were very slow, Internet spotty, HARD bed, although room very spacious and quiet with good AC. Only Mexican restaurants nearby and no breakfast except hotel buffet $$$. If I had been here for pleasure instead of business I might not have been so annoyed by the slow elevator and less than helpful staff... Last straw was hotel maid knocking and trying to enter with PRIVACY sign clearly posted.

« Great Place in San Diego Old Town »

We stayed here recently for 3 nights for our son's graduation from boot camp at MCRD. We instantly liked the layout of the hotel with a beautiful view of the city. It's not for everyone especially if you don't like long walks or stairs, but it appears you can get to every room by elevator. It is spread out over several buildings which again added to the ambiance of the hotel. There are several great places to eat in Old Town within walking distance. The room itself was average and older but fit the rest of the theme. It would have seemed out of place if the room was furnished in the latest, greatest decor. One of the best things for us was the free shuttle. Our driver's Zach and Freddie took us to and from the hotel and MCRD each day. We tipped them well for their service and they were very accommodating. If you're going to San Diego for a graduation at MCRD we would highly recommend this facility. We thought we would walk each day however there really isn't a great route to take but the shuttle took care of everything for us.

« loud old building in a decent location, stairs, buffet breakfast with coupons »

It's about a 7 minute walk from the green line trolley stop. One staff member said there was going to be 2 complimentary bottles of water delivered to the room daily, that never happened. When we asked Michelle at the front desk she said 'no you don't get those' then she asked someone in the back and recanted. The waters never showed up even though she said she was going to have them sent to the room. If you want to sleep get a casita and away from the pool. Since it's a OLD building you can hear EVERYTHING that happens next door and especially above you. It sounded like elephants doing jumping jacks at all hours of the night. The little fridge in the room never got cold enough to keep the food at a safe temperature. Be sure to ask for an accessible room if you have a lot of luggage or don't want to deal with stairs, otherwise there are A LOT of stairs. First they said there was no breakfast, then they gave us coupons for the breakfast buffet. I'd suggest bringing an extension cord and ear plugs. The complimentary soap, lotion and shampoo are harsh- bring your own. Uber eats serves this area. We used code eats-jeannaj2 Don't count on yelp for accurate restaurant hours in the Oldtown area, we were disappointed MANY times.

    « Old Town Hotel »

This is a lovely hotel situated in old town San Diego. When we arrived we were given a room in the 600 block, it felt a bit out of the way and views of roadworks and being on our honeymoon we felt bit disappointed. My husband spoke to the staff and they were very accommodating - allowing us to have a look at a few other vacant rooms in order to swap- we settled on one on same level as the reception which was great after coming home from walking all day- as there are a lot of stairs in order to access other parts of the hotel. The hotel can be a bit of a maze at first but you quickly get used to it, nice clean pool and self service laundry which was good. Also free tea/coffee available in the lobby plus our room was replenished with 2 bottles of water each day. Overall a very pleasant stay and I would definitely stay here again.

    « Gorgeous! »

This is a beautiful hotel! Take my advice- when you book your room ask for a room near the hotel lobby. This place is huge! I needed to go to my room and get some ibuprofen and it took me 15 min to get there and 15 min to get back. Least to say- I was in the farthest building away from the lobby. Other than that- the place was beautiful, clean and customer friendly- loved it!

    « Summer Vacation »

Very nice hotel. Has that old building feeling. Amazing views and the perfect spot to walk back and forth to old town. The hotel offers guests 21+ a free welcome drink. And we received breakfast buffet passes for the restaurant in the hotel. It was a good well rounded buffet with really nice views at the top of the hill. Some people say the hotel is noisy. But that's because of the rude guests that will let their kids run amuck. Very nice clean hotel. The room I stayed in had vaulted ceilings and double door entry. And it was very close to the pool!

    « great location »

Reasonably priced and in the centre of Old Town. Stayed for 3 nights with 5 other couples. The staff were great and were able to place our group in the same wing of the hotel. Great bar and restaurant on the roof overlooking San Diego. A short walk to the trolley, local restaurants and Perry's Diner. Heated pool and nice grounds. The wifi worked well for us and was free.

Hotel is in an ideal location. Nice views of Old Town. Staff was very helpful. Asked to change room location and they took care of it immediately. Grounds were nicely manicured. Only issue are the stairs. Some are very steep. We figured out how to use the elevator system as not every building has one. We used our AAA card and got 3 dollars off on site parking and discounts for buffet breakfast at Tequila's. Buffet was basic breakfast foods and the price was right. It is an older property but it was just fine with us. Bed could have been a bit more comfortable but we still enjoyed out visit.

    « Comfortable stay... »

Stayed at this location many times, always a good visit, just unhappy with the constant rate increases,,,,,,. The location is perfect, just walking distance to down town "Old Town". Enjoy adult beverages all you want, no driving. Many shops and restaurants to enjoy........

« The expensive hotel with no Wifi »

A lovely and unique hotel, good staff, good facilities. The only problem is with the wifi, or lack of it. The wifi is totally inadequate anywhere in the hotel, and it rarely works. This is not good for such an otherwise excellent hotel.

« management lies and hidden charges »

It is unfortunate that the kind and helpful staff have to be the front for management that is weak and problematic. Lies about service and hidden charges on the bill soured this otherwise fine experience

« Great hotel in the heart of Old Town San Diego! »

Chose this place because of its proximity to Old Town. Checked in to find our room very clean. Had our complimentary margaritas at the attached restaurant and set off to enjoy the city. The staff was all very friendly and we had no complaints. The water pressure was a little off and on in the shower and our shower head was stuck on the massage setting but apart from those small things we were quite happy with our stay. We received complimentary breakfast buffets as our trip was to celebrate our birthdays and again the food was good. Would definitely stay here again!

In the heart off old town San Diego - the Hacienda was a great place to stay - my family and I were very satisfied. It was a great suprize to get free tickets to the breakfast bufet. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

    « Feels like a Mexico getaway! »

My fiance and I have been coming back to this hotel for years now. The grounds are so beautiful, with Spanish style architecture and beautiful bougainvillea and bird of paradise everywhere. The rooms are spacious, clean, and the decor is very nice. Located in the heart of Old Town San Diego, there are tons of great restaurants and shopping within walking distance. I really can't say enough positives about this hotel!

    « Crowded 4th of July 2016 »

Great location, but gets crowded, so prepare yourself for crowds and finding parking, unless you park on the property. Probably less crowded on a non holiday weekend! The layout is tricky, but once you figure out the grounds, its not bad. Lots of steps and elevators. Perfect place to stay and walk to all the attractions and restaurants in Old Town.

    « Celebrated a birthday »

We loved everything about this property. The hotel has the charm of a hacienda, comfortable room and superb location. The breakfast buffet was the best, with so many selections and good service. Can't wait to come back again.

    « hotel with a view »

We love this hotel with it's Spanish style grounds and decor. There is a great view of the city below and it's within walking distance to the restaurants and Old Town. We always request the plaza level where there are tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the cool evenings.

« Not so cheap but great location. »

Rooms are dark and dated. Staying during full capacity meant no room change and unfortunately had a room overlooking road construction on Juan St (garbage truck at 6am, workers arrive at 6:30am and work starts at 7am). Didn't have access to the closer parking garage so it was a climb and felt unsafe at night. Wifi virtually not working in rooms but great in the restaurant. Grounds are beautiful and nice location but room location would make a big difference in ratings.

    5
« Cheap, nice and very good! »

A cheap, nice and very good place to stay. We had a room with a small balcony. The hotel is a few hundred yards from the old town. A beautifull hacienda with large rooms. When we arrived we directly got vouchers for a nice breakfast.

    « Awesome Location »

Rooms are great. Beds are ok. Parking sucks, especially if you own a big truck. Mini fridge and microwave are a huge plus. With that being said, the location is great. You literally have everything you need within walking distance. Dining, bars, convenience stores, museum, not to mention the people. While it does get crowded everyone was pretty decent, maybe cause everyone's a tourist for the most part. Mission beach and Coronado are literally minutes away, so even that's a great thing. Visit the beach in the morning/noon, then head back to town to enjoy the scenery and night life. Would definitely stay here again.

    « Front Desk Issues »

This hotel is big and the room s are nice. It maybe a little confusing to get to your room so have the front desk really explain how to get there. There are 7 different buildings in this hotel. Restaurant/bar has great food!!!! They do need to train the front desk how to smile and be friendly. I did encounter three of the clerks and only 1 was awful the other two were great.

    « Beautiful surroundings »

Lovely hotel and surroundings. In general a wonderful experience, however, we had trouble with the wake-up call and there were no towels at the pool on one occasion. The lobby is very nice. The pool is quite small for the number of people using it.

« Overall good but with a few niggles »

We stayed here for 9 nights in June on our first trip to San Diego. Having read mixed reviews beforehand I wasn't to sure what to expect but overall we enjoyed our stay here. As others have said the hotel is on a hillside and the rooms are split in separate buildings going up the hill. We quite liked the quirky style of the hotel and after a little bit of getting used it was easy enough to find your room/block. During our stay we did see a number of people wondering around lost though! We were up in the top block (3 elevator rides) from the garage and it had great views. The room itself was spacious and comfortable enough but I don't think it quite fitted the "deluxe" category referred to on the various booking websites. The hotel as a whole looks beautiful and is kept clean and tidy. The pool was the warmest outdoor pool I have ever been in and was perfect for a relax after a long day doing tourist things. They even provide pool towels. The staff we spoke to were also helpful and friendly. We ended up having breakfast each day at the Tequila Factory. This is linked directly to the hotel and the food is served buffet style. This is plentiful and good, the only minor gripe being the variety with it being seemingly being the same dishes every morning. Okay if you're there for a couple of days but after 9 days it came a bit repetitive. There were a few of niggles. When we booked (6 months before) we requested a lower floor room as my partner has mobility issues. On arrival they apologised for not having a lower room available however they did give us free parking and complimentary breakfast vouchers as compensation. Parking anywhere in Old Town, and especially at the weekends in June appears to be a nightmare. The garage at the hotel is also used as public pay car park so it could be a lottery getting a space in the early evening. It's also quite a tight car park so if you have anything bigger than a midsize be prepared to test your parking skills. The wifi was a bit hit and miss and when it did work it wasn't the quickest. Overall I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again. However I can see why some people would be put off by the layout and parking. So long as you are aware of this before you go, forewarned is forearmed.

    « A gem in Old Town »

This is my third time staying at this property, and again I was impressed with the value for the money. The property is very nicely laid out (hacienda style of course) with nicely appointed rooms and a friendly staff. The Tequila Factory on-site restaurant has really good food and a wonderful staff. Location-wise, one block from Old Town historic park and a 10 minute walk to the trolley system, making much of San Diego accessible without having to drive. Loved it! >>>one note, wi-fi during this last trip was spotty - may have been working on the system?)

    « clean and cozy »

We have stayed at this hotel several times, other than always getting lost trying to find our room, it has always been a very nice place to be with a nice view and great food! Try it out I think you will like it, Old Town San Diego is right outside the door and a great place to explore!

« read the 1 and 2 star reviews first »

Unless you get to this hotel early in the afternoon, you may end in the rooms from hell. They are very far from the lobby and difficult to get to even when the elevators are working which they were not for a good portion of my stay. On the plus side they did move me, but because I demanded it, they did not offer. The restaurant was also hard to get to. They do not honor the requests made when you reserve. If you have dog allergies, or area light sleeper you may have a problem too. The wifi did not work in the rooms far away from the front desk and the are no computers available for guests to use. Finally make sure you are aware of all the taxes. For a five night stay my bill was $100 more than I expected because of resort taxes, facility taxes, property taxes, local taxes and state sales tax.(that is probably true of all old town resorts, though). The thermostats are preset and will not go lower, the refrigerator was not very cold. I just did not feel very welcomed here.

« Well kept hotel in old town San Diego with lots of character.. »

Driving into this hotel is a major challenge right now as the streets outside are all torn up and it isn't clear how to get in? Requested a top floor and was accommodated. I really appreciate that. Room was small but very cute and comfortable. Lots of landscape and flowers outside. They DO charge for parking so be aware... Would stay here again..

« Great location, beautiful grounds, average hotel room, significant resort fee »

Exterior of hotel is lovely and picturesque, with several buildings going up a hillside adjacent to Old Town Park. My room was a typical hotel room, with 2 double beds, similar to other mid range and economy hotels. The picture on the website showed a larger and nicer room than what we got, but our room was fine for our needs. There was a large daily resort fee added to the cost of the room per day. We got room service once. The service fee and automatically added tip almost doubled the price of the order. In general the maid service was good except for cleaning the coffee mugs. One day there was substantial visible residue in the bottom of them, and the next day they smelled like chlorine bleach had been used to clean them. We did let the mgr know upon check out. The hotel is a very short walk to Old Town and restaurants, and just a couple of blocks from the transit station. For access to Old Town and the Old Town transit station, this hotel is the best option. We preferred to eat at the nearby restaurants than at the hotel restaurant, which was not so great at breakfast to have to walk. I noticed most people had a breakfast voucher (we did not) to use in the hotel restaurant. I recommend trying to book this hotel so you have a voucher to make mornings easier.

« Decent Hotel in Great Part of San Diego »

LOCATION: This hotel is on a hill overlooking the heart of Old Town San Diego, which offers numerous attractions, and places to both shop and eat. GETTING THERE: The hotel web site offers directions on how to get there by car. If flying into town, the hotel offers a shuttle to/from the airport, which is a 15-minute drive away. That said, the shuttle can be an issue. I had been informed that upon my arrival, I was to call the hotel for the shuttle after I retrieved my bags from baggage claim. I did that, only to be informed by the front desk staff that the shuttle driver was busy doing other things; she informed me to take a taxi, and the hotel was kind enough to cover the fee. On the return trip, the shuttle was 15 minutes late. STAFF: The hotel front desk staff is middle-of-the road. They were helpful if asked but did not go out of their way to check on how my wife and I were enjoying our stay when I approached them more than once to ask questions. The housekeeping staff did a good job of maintaining a clean room. ROOMS: The Best Western offers nice-sized rooms. The one in which my wife and I stayed had a queen-sized bed, full-sized sofa bed, table with two chairs, dresser, refrigerator, and coffee maker. For those expecting to find a full array of toiletries, the hotel offers only shampoo and conditioner. Additionally, the hotel might offer more towels: three bath towels for two people may not be enough, particularly for those who want one towel for their body and another for their hair. FACILITIES: This is a multi-building hotel, each modeled in adobe style, with beautiful well-tended grounds that include palm trees, flowering bushes, and numerous places to sit and relax. The lobby is relatively small but does offer several places to sit down and computers with internet. (If you have something to print off, contact the front desk staff.) There is a heated outdoor pool and hot tub with numerous places to sit. The fitness center is small but offers a recumbent bike, a StairMaster, an elliptical machine, a treadmill, and a multi-use stacked-weight system that allows a person to work every part of the body. Both the pool and fitness center offer towels, though my wife and I both found that there were few, if any, towels in the late evening or early morning in both locales. Finally, during the last two days of our stay, one of the elevators was broken. The on-site restaurant, called the Tequila Factory, offers a variety of meals, though, as the name suggests, much of the fare is Mexican. For breakfast, one can order from the menu or pay about $12 for the buffet, which includes juices, eggs, potatoes, bacon, buñelos, pastries, and cereals. INTERNET ACCESS: The free internet was rather problematic. In the lobby, only one of the three computers was working on the day I arrived, and by the time I left, two of the three were down. In the room, it could be sporadic, sometimes opening pages with no problem and other times not. TIP 1: To save some money, go to the Chamber of Commerce office in Old Town, where one can get numerous coupons for restaurants and attractions. TIP 2: If you do not have a car and want to go to the San Diego Zoo, take the bus. Go to the main transportation center on the edge of Old Town and get on the #10 bus. On the bus, purchase a $7 all-day bus pass (which will save you money versus paying for each individual ride) and take the #10 to the stop at Park Blvd. There, catch the #215 bus. Go one stop to the zoo. TIP 3: If you are at the hotel on a Saturday or Sunday, go to the Farmers Market in Old Town, where vendors sell glassware, T-shirts, artwork, jewelry, and food.

« Our Old Town Weekend »

A very nice weekend overall and the hotel certainly fits the ambiance of Old Town, but check in was delayed because they misread my online booking for 2 rooms and only had us down for one. The error was resolved eventually and they waived the parking fee for the inconvenience. We stayed in building #6 which required us to take a maze of elevators. Had I been out for an evening of drinking I never would have found my way back. However I had my 85 year old mother with me and just getting to our room wore her out.

Good centrally located hotel. Excellent breakfast. Nice room. Only downside poor internet. Currently having problems with parking due to roadworks taking out one car park. Pool a little on warm side, could do with cooling down a couple of degrees.

    « Relaxation central! »

I picked this hotel because it was close to an event I was attending, but I really think it is a hidden gem. It is close to the airport, if that is important, and there is a free shuttle service. What I really liked about it, though, is you wouldn't know you were in a big city. I don't know if it is because I am from NY, but the way that this hotel is set up, you would feel that you were far away from a busy city. It is situated in Old Town, an historic district that also feels warm and cozy with a Mexican feel. The hotel is very spread out and beautifully landscaped. There are courtyards with seating and tables that made me think that this is an ideal place for families because children could run around safely whle adults could catch up with one another. There is a beautiful pool and hot tub. the views from the upper floors are wonderful. The lobby has an inviting fire. There is a delicious restaurant on the premises. Parking is provided but an extra fee. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The only downsides is that because the hotel is spread out, it can be confusing to find your room. The front desk staff seems to be overworked, so we actually showed a guest to his room. The parking garage seems a little mystifying to me as well-we parked a long way from our car, but we didn't have a lot of luggage. If you are not able to handle stairs, I stronly suggest that you get a room close to the main lobby so that you won't have to walk far. I like to walk so I am happy, but that might not be everyone's preference. I would definitely stay here again.

    « A VERY DISAPPOINTING TRIP »

I looked forward to staying at this hotel for so long and I was so disappointed. My room never got cleaned, the young lady at the front desk on Friday was just plain rude when answering questions about the hotel. There were numerous areas of the hotel that needed attention badly. From a distance it looks beautiful, but up close the hotel was just plain dirty and run-down. I fully realize this Best Western because of it's location does a huge volumn of business, which is all the more reason that things should be kept in much better condition. I would love to visit again because the views are wonderful and the beds are comfortable. However, the water running all night as well as the unkept grounds and bad service may cause me to change my mind. I am a front office manager at another BW location and I simply can't believe the things I saw and heard during my visit to this property.

    « Find the cheese »

The room was just average but take away for burnt out heat lamp and a toilet that seems to be about an inch low. But the worst aspect of this place is that it is a veritable maze. In order to get from the lobby to the restaurant you have to go through the garage. you can either take an elevator to the third floor walk around a corner across a plaza and into the garage to another elevator and then up to the restaurant or you can walk into the garage, up stairs to the next level and into the elevator to the restaurant. no maps, no arrows nothing until you get into that garage elevator where it tells you the hotel is on the top floor. wifi was really sketchy. The ice maker nearest my room was out of order with a sign apologizing but not directing you to the next nearest ice machine. Also, there are placards throughout the facility declaring that "this facility has been determined by the state of California to contain substances that cause birth defect or are carcinogenic. Finally, the walls are thin and my room was adjacent to a loading dock for the next business over. if you decide to stay here stay away from building 7

    « Loved Old Town »

Very convenient to all the attractions that San Diego Old Town has to offer. We were able to walk every where we went: restaurant, mass, and Old Town attractions and shops. There were two drawbacks. One was the road construction going on seemingly everywhere and the closure of one of the main interstate systems for a running race.

    4
« Cute hotel, very far off the beaten path »

The hotel is cute and clean, and the staff were nice and accommodating of our need for an early check-in. It's very far from everything but old town, but if that's what your trip is for its a good pick.

    « Great stay »

My husband and I loved everything about the hotel and the location. The people at the desk were helpful courteous and friendly. They went out of their way to help us by answering any questions, giving us directions, and helping with printing and laundry. We had no problem navigating the property as some reviewer's have stated. We wanted a room with elevator access and it was no issue. The pool area and hot tub were great with plenty of warm water and towels. We highly recommend this facility if staying in Old Town. It is great walking convenient to the trolley stop downtown and many restaurants nearby.

« A Fun Place to stay and visit »

This is a special hotel due to it's location in old town San Diego. We love to come to Old Town. This trip we got tired from all the activity. We found this place just out of chance and what a great place it is. Next time this will be a normal part of our visit as well.

« Good Alternative to La Jolla »

When I am unable to get a room in La Jolla, the Hacienda is a good alternative. This hotel is in Bazaar Del Mundo and I really enjoy the ability to walk around after a long drive. The pool has a great view of Downtown and the bay areas on a clrear day. Restaraunts and sjopping literally throught the back gated fence of hte property. PArking is easy, but tight for larger cars. Hotel has buffet breakfast includde in some stays and 25% off if not included. El COyote is a great place to eat nad the thotel has discounts. The work out center is small but okay. Very close ot FAshion Valley for movies and shpping ansd eating. And, if thre are 3-5 of you, one room wth two queens nd the pull out sofa wil work very comfortably. Don't know many SD hotels where it could be less than $60 if you alll share in the hotel room charge.

    « Back Again... »

Love the location of this hotel - you are a 1/2 block off the main street where all of the restaurants are located - we have been here many times and have learned to request a room in the 700 building (bottom floor) that way we don't have to climb any stairs and we are that much closer to the action - will definitely return again and again...

« Nice one night stay at excellent facility »

The hotel was much nicer than we expected (two couples on sightseeing vacation). The rooms were large and clean, the staff friendly and helpful. The hotel consists of several buildings arranged on the hilltop overlooking the Old Town area. We could see across the bay to Point Loma. WE walked to a restaurant and down to the Old Town Historical Park. We cited AARP and AAA membership -- this lowered the rates for room and parking; we received coupons for margaritas and had a wonderful breakfast buffet. The only downside was the almost non-existent WiFi, which was very frustrating.

    « All the amenities of a $55 dollar hotel for $270 »

It was prom night in the San Diego area and the hotels were booked. I bit on a high price at a late hour out of desperation happy to be having a place to crash and looking forward to living the plush life for an evening that I could explain to the boss as the necessity that it was. I was greeted at the desk by a clerk who delivered in a bored tone bitter news that parking was going to cost extra and then droned the instructions to get to my room which was two elevator rides and several flights of stairs away in the opposite corner of this compound like hotel. After a walk that resembled the MC Escher drawing of the endless stairs with three bags of gear I got a a room that was tidy enough but lacked the cushy quality I imagined when I booked a $270 hotel room, more like a Super 8. The restaurant attached to the compound - The Tequila factory - was decent and the bar staff were friendly and accommodating but I wouldn't return to this place again if there was almost any other option.

I've stayed at this hotel over 20 times. It's located in a safe, interesting area with easy access to the highways and local train. It really is a pretty as the pictures on the website!

    « lovely views »

We spent 6 nights in adjoining rooms in building 8, that were spacious and clean. They had all the amenities that you expect. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. It is right in old town, so you can walk to all the eateries and places of interest. The hotel has a lot of stairs (elevators are old and slow) and we had to go from building to building to different levels to get to pool and spa. We used the onsite restaurant on our first night and found it to be good. But the next morning we had ordered room service breakfast and part of our order was wrong, so when I finally got through to the restaurant and explained (which I did nicely as mistakes can easily be made and rectified)the lady that took my call said she would check and call back. She never did. Our correct order was delivered 15 minutes later, no problem, except there was no salt and pepper. So I rang and the same lady I spoke to previously, informed me that if I wished to have some salt and pepper that she would have to charge me. When I queried this she told me that they already use them when cooking, so I would have to pay, then she hung up on me. I was flabbergasted to say the least. I rang front desk and explained what had just happened and the young lad went into overdrive to get me some salt and pepper. Strange indeed. I have stayed in many hotels and used a lot of inhouse restaurants and have never been spoken to so abruptly by a staff member. I loathed having to pay the 15%tip automatically added to the room service bill. Would I stay at the hotel again...yes. would I use the restaurant. ...no...!

    « May 26-28th, 2016 »

I booked this hotel through air miles and the amount of air miles was not cheap. I booked it based on all the good reviews it had. I was expecting a fairly nice room, at the least, clean. The grounds were beautiful but the beauty stopped when we opened the door to our room. I tried to enjoy the old feel but the place needs a reno. The carpet was old berber and did not feel clean (as my feet felt sticky walking on it after showering). The carpet was frayed at the edges as it was no longer nicely attached to the floor. The bathroom had a sign that it was "ultra cleaned". But the tub was peeling in many spots and you could see it was painted about 3 times from all the different colors that were showing. The shower was so loud that I couldn't even hear my daughter talking when she was standing next to me. It was like a high pitch scream sound. Terrible. I'm not sure if all the rooms looked like this but I was highly disappointed. Plus we had to pay $16 US/night for parking. This is a great part of San Diego and I highly recommend the area but find somewhere else to stay or ask for an updated room maybe.

ok, where to begin, we have wanted to stay here numerous times, because it looked really nice, which it is, got to check in desk. pretty normal check in, but we booked this hotel last minute, so i guess last minute hotel bookings they put you in the crappiest part of the hotel. so the front desk girl proceeds to tell me that she put us in building 6 , and there is construction on the street that will take us to the parking for that building, so she said here is directions for a detour, or you can park in the main parking and walk, i looked at the property map and said are you crazy? ok so we proceeded to try and follow this map , after fighting with my husband for about 10mins because we had no clue where this was taking us, we parked in parking for building 4. and then the hike began, we must of walked up about 40 stairs, with luggage, and these stairs are steep and made of terra cotta stone. then we found building 6. then had to take elevators , up to building 6, then elevator to the 1st floor of building 6. finally found our room, and guess where it was? the back of the building facing the road where they are bulldozing up the street that we couldnt find. room 617 i believe, ok the room was nice, they have a fridge, microwave, stuff like that, there is a restaurant on site, the tequila factory, when u check in you get 2 free drink coupons for them. we had the margaritas, stick to a beer or wine on that coupon, margarita not so good, so we left the property to do our thing, so on our way back we decided to give the parking another go, we finally found the detour, it took you up a big hill through residential neighborhoods, and then into a parking garage, room was quite after the construction stopped. but in the morning about 7am it started up again,

« Great views, great location - but be prepared for stairs! »

Stayed here for a friend's wedding last November and loved it. My preference in hotels is simple, but not too simple. The location is great for exploring this very small and historic area of San Diego. Walking distance to a few historic sites, trolley tours, a few shops (although touristy), and a selection of small and delicious restaurants. The culture of Old Town San Diego is very true to its Mexican influence with plenty of good Mexican food, Mexican-influenced architecture, handmade crafts and wares and plenty of music. Good atmosphere! The rooms are well-kept and very spacious. Not sure what type of room I had because I was part of a group block, but I had a King bed, microwave, couch/seating area, mini fridge. The hotel property is sprawling with many separate buildings; whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on your preference. I got lost the first few times navigating to my room. When I finally got it right, I felt accomplished lol. It is also located on a hillside so there are a lot of stairs involved. Elevators are provided but they are really bad; they take forever to arrive and they are a little rickety. The elevators are probably my only complaint. I personally don't mind walking, but others might. The elevators demand quite a lot of patience. Something to consider if you are not very mobile! However, being on the hill the view is beautiful. The sunsets from the property are gorgeous. You can KIND OF see the ocean from the pool - you can definitely hear the ship horns from the pool at least. Not in an obnoxious way, just in the kind of way that reminds you that you are in a coastal port town :) The breakfast here doesn't work like most other Best Westerns. If you purchase a room with breakfast, you get a voucher which is redeemable at the restaurant on-site (Old Town Tequila Factory). There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Well worth it! But if you decide not to, there are other options down the street. (Side note: On one of the mornings, a balloon man came around to tables with children and made balloon animals for tips - cute touch!) I recommend this hotel and would definitely stay again.

« Great Setting and Great Service »

I have stayed here many times over the years. The service and atmosphere are always great here. Prices are about as reasonable as you can get in the San Diego area. The staff go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. My only complaint, which is really with almost all Best Western chains, is the quality of the bed. The quality of their mattress really needs to be looked into. Traveling for business, I get back to the room after a long day and really just want to lay back and relax. A better bed would make it a much more pleasant stay.

    « I Highly Recommend This Hotel »

Great location for spending time in Old Town San Diego, manager/staff are helpful and friendly. The price was great for a nice, spacious room and the courtyards with tables and seating spread throughout the property.

« another greaat experience at the Hacienda »

Best Western Plus hacienda San Diego has again provided a remarkable hotel experience. Staff, accommodations location and cleanliness were all of a superior standard. We have stayed at the Hacienda off and on for the last 15 years and it is always a pleasure.

    « PLUMING »

I have stayed here before and i really enjoy my stays, view is awesome. The only complaint I have is the water in the tub would back up and not drain fast enough while showering , but beside that I would stay again for sure . Room is very nice and beds are very comfie . View is awesome to old town and the bay area. supper location. You can just park your car and take the trolly where ever you want. Staff was very nice they even gave us a ride to our section because we were lost lol. but great service staff was very helpful for every thing we needed. Also the one thing i missed was a breakfast they do not offer a complementary like most best westerns that I have stayed at . This would be nice if they did . They do have a restaurant but it is $12 pp. for breakfast. We went to eat breakfast across the street at El Coyte best food ever and best Margaritas . BUT THEY NEED TO OFFER SOME KIND OF BREAKFAST FOR SURE.

« The Best in Old Town »

The Hacienda is the most delightful hotel in Old Town. It has a wonderful sense of decor and the location is the best. I have stayed there a lot for both business and pleasure. The staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. I cant say enough about them. My only complaint is that their mattersses arent the best, however, I asked for an extra comforture which fixed the problem as I used it as a matteress cover. I will for sure stay again as it is always a wonderful experiece.

« Beautiful setting in Old Town »

We checked in and it took a while to get to speak to a desk clerk. The staff was very polite and appologetic for the long wait. We requested a room with a view near the pool. We got the room by the pool but the view was obscured by a wall. Make sure if you request a room with a view you specify unobscured. I don't think all the rooms were filled. This was not a issue. The room was dated, needed some serious upgrating. We stayed here in the early 90's and apparently has not been upgraded since then. Seems like a Hotel chain would upgrade more often than 20 years. The carpet was stained and you'd think that would have been replace long ago. The beds were comfortable and that was important for a good night sleep. They did a good job on service. The outside and courtyard was very well kept, much better than the rooms themselves. I do like this hotel as it is convenient to the places we like to visit. I also know they are starting to upgrade some room. We stayed in bulding 500 by the pool area and I assume they have not started on this section. We were happy with the accomodations and the breakfast buffet in the Tequila Factory Restaurant in the morning was outstanding, great way to start out the morning. You may want to be aware they the do charge $16/night for parking in a covered garage. The only other issue was weak wifi where our room was, they definitely need a wifi booster in this area as it is the furthest from the lobby.

« Historical feel, nice grounds »

Hotel is right in Old Town, great location. Expansive grounds, multi layered but with stairs and elevators. Stayed twice in 3 weeks on layovers. Nice bar upstairs but many other options nearby. First stay we were upgraded to the Presidential Suite. Huge room with living room, 2 full bathrooms, an balcony. Second stay in a std queen and pretty small. Room on corner and very narrow. Very clean and with comfy beds. Very quiet. Only complaint was the airport shuttle did not start until 7AM which seemed late. Had to take cab to airport for $22. Pays to verify when booking what time airport shuttles run. Nice tip from shuttle to try Old Mexican Cafe, great food.

« Wonderful Place to Stay, in a Wonderful area »

Wow! We have known of this hotel for many years, but never stayed until recently. What a great location, in the heart of San Diego's Old Town. It is within walking distance to everything within Old Town. The room was spotless and plenty of space. The hotel staff was great to work with. The associated restaurant, the Old Tequila Factory & Restaurant has a great view of the area, high on the hill, the food was excellent and the Tequila choices were excellent. The breakfast buffet had many choices

« Relaxing,, Accommodating, Clean, Fresh Design »

We've stayed in many 'themed' hotels and they all look the same. When we reached our room, all access from outside, there are double light doors and wood shutters throughout. Ceiling fan, which we used and not the a/c and a designated area to work or eat casually. The bed was very comfortable and so are the pillows. In the bath, clean and accommodating. Shampoo, conditioner and 2 soaps, no lotion. The 'rain' shower head is adjustable and has great water pressure. The room is somewhat smaller than average, but was perfect for us. TV was fine, tho' they could have had more stations and not so many news (we ARE on vacation after all).

« Beautiful room and great location! »

This property is very nice and a perfect location in Old Town San Diego. The room was beautifully decorated and had a nice-size refrigerator, single cup coffee maker, safe and very comfortable beds! Just steps to Historic Old Town, great restaurants, shopping and the main Trolley Stop. Rather than driving one day we walked a block to catch the Trolley and visited the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Coronado, Balboa Park, Little Italy, Horton Plaza & the Gaslamp District downtown San Diego. Another plus is having a Shuttle from the hotel to the airport.

    « Outdated »

The room was ok but very outdated. Would not stay here again with my family. The room was clean but had a musty smell. The mattresses were very lumpy could use new ones. The rooms could be less expensive given the fact the rooms are not what you see in the photos that are advertised.

    « Lots of construction »

The Hotel had a lot of construction going on. The room where we stayed was on an upper wing which made us drive our car about 2 miles to get around the construction. Not fun, Hotel tequila factory restaurant bar was great but breakfast wasn't. Buffet ran out of food and we are told to get what was left because they were "picking it up". Our room did have a tremendous view of old town.

    « Hotel Stay »

It was a really nice hotel with great views. The only thing that was troublesome was getting to and from our room because of its location. We had to walk up so many flights of stairs and the road to the parking garage was under construction.

    « Old Town Experience »

The hotel is in the heart of Old Town San Diego. You can walk and not have to worry about parking. The Tequila factory was nice. We were there for the Cinco De Mayo celebration and they have a really nice street fair..

« Excellent start point to visit San Diego »

Booked in to the Hacienda 3 days before a cruise out of San Diego. Could not have picked a more convenient locations for the airport, site seeing, and the dock from where the cruise ship departed. Zak made things even more convenient with his hotel shuttle which was free from the airport and to the dock. Zak was also a wealth of knowledge re the sights etc. We checked in with a very competent staff. Our rooms were upstairs (with elevator) with a balcony and a view of Old Town to which we could easily walk. The Old Town Trolley and Restaurants were all within easy walking distance. The hotel is well appointed and clean.

« Classi hotel in Old Town »

Service and restaurant are just OK. The location cannot be beat, right in the midst of all the action of Old Town. They had the most comfortable bed I have ever found. Sixteen dollars per night for parking seems excessive for most days, but since I was there for Cinco de Mayo, it was a bargain ($20 in all the lots around area). The Cinco de Mayo celebration is fantastic and this hotel is the most convenient, so I highly recommend it for that weekend each year.

    4
« Chill out in Old Town »

My bed was the most comfortable one I have ever slept in. The location of the hotel cannot be beat; you just walk down a flight of steps and you are in the midst of Old Town. I was there for Cinco de Mayo and the free music and other entertainment and the food and shopping booths were fantastic. It is an exciting celebration, yet family friendly. I suggest you make your reservations now for next year. Wonderful.

« Old Town Hacienda is the Place to Stay »

Always friendly staff willing to accommodate me. I always stay in the same room because of the view and ease of use to the back entry gate to Old Own streets. This area is the perfect location if you want to hop over to the Harbor area south or up to Oceanside north.

    « Mini Vacation »

The facility is located in a great location which is close to both food and historic sites. as you can walk to many things. Overall has everything you need for either business or pleasure as a place to stay. The king suite made you feel like you were in a small apartment. It had a fridge, microwave and stove for those with an extended stay could benefit from. The TV's were all updated and the room reflected the "old style" of the hotel. The hotel did have a restaurant on site which was nice as well as a fitness center. The best part was all the cardio and strength machines were working. The only downside was it didn't seem like things were cleaned which was a bit of a disappointment. One staff member stood out with a can do positive attitude which was Daniel. He was great! The rest of the staff seemed a bit "disoriented" on services and offerings the hotel had to offer guests which was a bit of a disappointment. A bonus is the hotel offers shuttle service to the airport but make sure you sign up for it.

« The Hacienda Hotel in Old Town San Diego is a great place for business or pleasure »

It may not be the newest or nicest but it is the most fun and the greatest location with clean rooms and comfortable beds. The El'Presidentay Club is a great added bonus. There are many places to eat and things to see in The Old Town area. It's only a few minutes drive to the airport and to downtown San Diego. Maybe twenty minutes to the navy base on North Island.

« Location to Old Town is great! »

When I arrived, I was somewhat confused with the arrangement of the rooms. I needed to travel uphill to the building according to the street number. The rooms were good but nothing out of the ordinary. The view of the city was great from the outside walkway to all the rooms. Going to and from the main community stairs and courtyard was better than the street. You do need to climb many stairs to get to the higher room levels. Once at street level, you are in the middle of restaurants and eateries all along the streets towards the Old Town Historic section. Most of the restaurants serve breakfast as well which have the local themes and items on the menu. The Old Towne Trolley stop is at the opening of Old Town entrance and makes it convenient for travelling through the city and tourist stops. There is a local street train nearby as well. No need for a taxi to get back to the hotel. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and going up and down the stairs wasn't too bad (I need to exercise as much as possible). I enjoyed the location not only for the tourist sites but the trip to the airport was just as close and provided free. I went in late Sept. of 2014 and the temps were under 90 degrees.

    « Close to everything »

This hotel, smack in the middle of the Old Town district, was centrally located to the Zoo, to Sea World, to Belmont Park, and a short drive to the downtown and Coronado. We had a nice room with view over Old Town; we were in the 600 building, which is at the top of the property and found it was easier to walk up Juan Street to get to our room rather than negotiate all the different levels and stairs.

    « Great location...great value »

We stayed at the Hacienda for only one night and regretted not staying an additional night or two. We traveled to San Diego to board a cruise ship. We were met at the airport by the hotel courtesy van. This same van brought us to the port the next day. It could not have been more convenient. The Hacienda's Old Town location provided wonderful Mexican restaurants just a block away. The Hop On Hop Off bus stop was a block away and the ride provided a great overview of the area. Thus my desire to stay longer as there was so much one could do. The hotel is clean, accommodating and a good value.

« Close to Old Town San Diego, but confusing hotel layout with lots of stairs »

I was originally booked for the Courtyard Marriott Old Town but upon arrival they told me they were having "maintenance" issues and arranged for me to stay at the Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel instead. Since it was almost midnight by this point, I just wanted to get to bed. The front-desk lady who checked me in at the BWPHH was friendly and gave me a voucher for breakfast at the restaurant next door. She then proceeded to spend a good amount of time explaining the hotel layout to me. Good thing she did, because this hotel has to have one of the most confusing layouts I've ever seen. Since I was staying in building six, I basically had to walk through the entire hotel and take 3 separate elevators to get to my room. This is due to the fact that the hotel is basically on the hillside overlooking Old Town San Diego. Once I got into my room, it was a good size but dated decor. There was only one bathroom switch and it turned on both the light and the bathroom fan, which was way way way too loud. Bed was comfy enough. Breakfast the next day was at the Tortilla Factory next door. Nice view from the outdoor seating area and the breakfast buffet was tasty enough, but the plates were dirty. Pros: right next to Old Town San Diego Cons: confusing hotel layout, dated rooms and decor.

« Great Location in Old Town »

This hotel was quite average at best. The location in Old Town is great if you want to spend time in this area. It is a close walk to most everything in Old Town. The rooms were OK, but the sound proofing is non-existent. With a dog barking and wining next door, there was no "sleeping in" that morning. Outside our room there was a small table with chairs on a patio. When people were sitting there talking, (and you were in your room) you thought you were part of the conversation. Very spread out rooms and sometimes confusing on how to get somewhere.

« Excellent location, Average Hotel »

Great Location. we always stay in Suite 112, very quiet and roomy. gorgeous hotel property with stunning views. Attention to detail was lacking on our last stay. broken frig, missing TV remote. no internet service. i had to call down to the front desk a couple of times for 'corrections' but they generally responded right away. but we'll give them one more shot. however, BED IS WAAAAY TOO HARD !!

    « Return Visit »

We came back after a bad experience last year as the manager offered us a discount to try it out again. Overall the staff were friendly except for when we checked in. We went to the lounge after check in and waited over 15 minutes before being acknowledged (while sitting at the bar), and then another 10 minutes before we received a drink. I really wanted to eat there as the food looked amazing last year, but we chose to dine somewhere else. Our hotel room was beside a meeting room that was booked both mornings of our stay so we were woken up at 6:45am both days. Their food & beverages were set up outside our window so it was loud and we were not able to sleep in. The hotel itself is beautiful and the hot tub & pool area is a lot of fun. The rooms are a bit difficult to locate as there are multiple buildings and levels.

We love Old Town, and the charming ambience. The Hacienda has ton of that charming feeling. And the rooms are set with that private romance feel. Loved the outside seating areas for each room. Thank you for the great time!

    « Fine if you're fully mobile »

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago. It's a charming hotel in the midst of old town. But it's set up with a series of buildings up the hill and one of the primary elevators was broken (and had been for quite some time, according to a staff member). My husband is having serious difficulty walking, came in limping across the lobby with a cane. They put us in the furthest room possible from the lobby, which involved either walking up three flights of stairs or up a steep hill. (In fact, there was parking in that building, but they failed to mention that. And even with the parking, it didn't help getting back and forth to the lobby--hard to explain unless you've been there.) Now I will say that once we finally got to the room, I called to see if there was a cart (I'd seen a golf cart). They said, yeah, when the shuttle driver gets back, maybe he can help. And they did offer to change our room. But at that point, my spouse was exhausted and in significant pain; we would have had to walk down three flights of steps and he simply needed to lie down. So we stayed where we were. It seems to me that if your elevator is out, it behooves you to make sure there are accommodations made--such as having a golf cart handy at all times. It would also be good to ask guests if they can handle lots of stairs. So beware if you have mobility issues.

    4
    « View & Location A+ »

The rooms are all suites, yes there a lot of stairs (which is common architectural feature) because it is multi-tiered hillside hotel -but there are elevators as well. The view from the restaurant bar at the Tequila Factory covers the Pacific Ocean and several notable San Diego landmarks. It is ideally located in the heart of Old Town San Diego next to all the tourist (and locals) attractions. The Bar is actually perhaps the nicest in Old Town-and they have there own exclusive crafted Tequila. The restaurant food is very good considering the stiff competition, the staff very professional and accommodating. I would return for sure.

Staff and amenities were great. WiFi in some buildings was spotty at best, but was fast when I used my store bought Cat 5 cable to plug into room provided router. Great location and quiet. Will definitely stay again for business or personal!

    « Visit USD »

Great location for visiting USD and next to Miguel's which has amazing food. Charming looks and the pool has a nice view towards Mission Bay. The room we had was right on the parking lot so request a courtyard room and it will be quieter. Also they used a "motel spray" which was very strong, so anybody with scent issues would not be able to stay there. We needed to have the window open or else could have not stayed.

« Why Should I Have to Ask??? »

The hotel is beautiful and in a great locale but the service stinks. The first day I had to call for bathmat and washcloths. There were no bathmats available so I received extra towels to put on the floor, and then the washcloths had been forgotten so back she went. The second morning I discovered there were no teabags, and I'm not a coffee drinker. I called down, and was advised that I would have to come down to get them. HELLOOOOOO. . . I like to drink my tea while I'm waking up and getting ready, NOT after I get dressed. The breakfast buffet is okay but not worth writing home about. When we arrived for breakfast, one of the servers seemed put out that we were in her way, and then later came to our table to see if we had change for $20's. . . so in the midst of breakfast we were all going through out wallets. Strange!!! It was a nice walk to Old Town; however, the street down could use more lighting at night. We did enjoy sitting outside in the evening at the tables interspersed around the property, and the floral ambience was lovely.

« Perhaps the best location in Old Town, very convenient to the sites of Old Town and Trolley, »

This is a beautifully landscaped hotel in the Old Town section of San Diego, about 6 miles from the airport. The hotel consists of 6 buildings spread over a large area and three (or four) different levels, so getting to your room may be a bit challenging. There are elevators, but they are a bit tricky to locate. The buildings are created in the mission style and landscaped with lovely flowers. Most rooms have a nice view. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but they are busy. Our room was nothing special. The furniture is a bit old and the room was a bit on the dark side because of the shutter window treatments. Still, it was clean, the bathroom was spacious, and the hotel common areas were perfectly lovely. We were given a coupon for a drink at the Tequila Factory which is on an upper level, and the food was fine. I did not use the pool, but I did use the exercise room which was small but the equipment was in good shape. The hotel has a shuttle that was convenient for getting to the hotel from the airport and downtown. It is probably better for getting to a city venue rather than the return because guests needing a ride from the airport are naturally prioritized. This hotel could not have a better location for nightlife and restaurants in the Old Town section, and the trolley is available nearby. I would stay there again.

« Lovely location, lovely looking hotel, many flaws »

We stayed as a family of 4 at the beginning of April. I did my research before we arrived at the hotel so were aware that it was built into a hillside and were prepared for some stair climbing. We were checked in proficiently and given directions with a decent map to where our room was and where we could park. Or so we thought! In short we were allocated a room in Building 600 and because the main road up to this building was closed due to road works, we were instructed up through the multi storey car park and told we would need to 'walk' from this car park to our room. That walk consisted of leaving the hotel complex, climbing a large hill past some residential houses (with four suitcases!), into another car park (that we couldn't park in!), into a lift and then walk to the far end of the building to our room. Good job we are relatively fit, I dread to think how others would cope if they were in their older years or even disabled and had the misfortune to be allocated a room this building! I don't think we could have got any further away from Reception if we tried! Our room was ok, a bit on the dark side but it was adequate for our needs. The bathroom could do with a bit of an upgrade but it was clean. You could walk down tons and tons of steps to get to the other areas of the hotel rather than walk down the uneven road if you so desired. We had a good first nights sleep and fortunately for us we were still operating on UK time so were all awake early and good job too....the workmen started up with diggers, lorries and all manner of equipment at 6.45am!!! I felt sorry for anyone who wanted a nice relaxing morning in their room! I alerted the ladies on reception to how noisy it was and that they may receive some complaints...they didn't seem overly bothered! We were told at check in 'on the quiet' (so the guests next to us couldn't hear) that we had been allocated complimentary breakfast which I thought an odd gesture. I didn't have the heart to tell them that it was already included in my room rate that I had prepaid so I went along with her generous secret! Breakfast was plentiful, had a reasonable range on offer and was self service. There did seem to be numerous guests with different arrangements where breakfast was concerned, some having discount vouchers, others having it complimentary and others paying full price for it. Wouldn't it be simple to just include breakfast in the room rate?! A plus point, we did have a great view whilst eating out on the patio on our last morning. Unfortunately, we discovered after we had returned home that we had been charged over $400 for our stay even though we had prepaid through a UK agent prior to our departure. Reading other Tripadvisor reports, it seems to be the norm for this hotel...something is going wrong somewhere! We contacted the hotel and we were refunded but we are still £25 out of pocket due to conversion rates and admin fees charged by the banks. Thanks Best Western! So all in all, whilst we absolutely loved San Diego, would we stay in this hotel again?.. Despite it's wonderful location...no, probably not.

    « Not for Familys »

Here is a rough breakdown of my experience. I arrived after 9pm. The room was originally booked for a single person/king bed, however, I changed the booking, by calling the 1-800 number the day I booked, and switched it to two queen beds. When I arrived they had no record of the change. When explaining the modification to the staff, the older gentleman at the check-in desk was rather rude/condescending. He snidely told me the room was booked for one person and a king bed, but I showed up with two adults and an infant (insert rude look here). I showed him my revised voucher and he said "well it would have been nice if they told us". I understand his frustration, but it wasn't my fault the information wasn't recorded/transferred properly. Also, it's not abnormal for people to change their reservations. I brought my mom and daughter for a quick girl's trip. They were going to explore the area while I had a meeting at the local University. To make things more interesting, they put us in a room at the far end of the property. There was construction on the adjacent road, making it difficult to park close to building 6. I asked for assistance, or a cart, to transport our luggage to the room. Neither were available to us at that time. Disappointing, but we managed. I also asked for a crib, which was available, but it never showed up to the room. I ended up falling asleep with the infant in the bed. Luckily, I'm an easy going person so I managed the fiasco like a champ. The property was beautiful, and I really enjoyed waking up early and sitting on the balcony overlooking the tropical landscaping and harbor view. I won't come back here with family, but I may consider it for a solo trip.

    « Good But... »

The Hotel was pretty spot on with the "Old Town" Theme of Old town San Diego. However, the area where we were booked was in the back and the road to the area was closed. It was disappointing knowing that instead of a quick drive up to the back, we had to go around. Then from our part of the Hotel to the Lobby was a bit confusing.

    « Last Time »

We stayed here Friday, April 15th - Sunday April 17th, as this is usually our First Choice of hotels. I Am a Platinum Elite Member, which means I stay in Best Western Hotels 12+ times a year.... It also means (according to Best Western Corp) that I am entitled to the "Best Available Room". Actually, I Never Knew that, until last week when my new card arrived and I read the brochure! I've been staying at this particular hotel, twice a year for about 5-6 years.... I ALWAYS Book at least 2-3 months in advance, and I either request Room 105 (it has windows that can be left opened 24/7) or a Plaza Room..... Especially in April for our anniversary. This is the 2nd time (last April was the first) my request was ignored and we were put in building 5 (which does not have an elevator). I have told them numerous times I am not able to walk up two flights of stairs w/ luggage (there is no one help carry bags up the stairs) to get to a room. Upon checking in I was informed that we were once again put in Building 5, I asked if they received my request for room preference (Yes, they had, 3 months ago & it was noted on my account). When I asked when room 105 was filled, I was told: "About 2 hours ago, before you arrived". So then I was offered another room, either next to the parking garage entrance & ice machine or on a busy walk way...... I stated my disappointment & unhappiness, and Amber (she is a Sweetie) apologized & went to get the manager: Dean (who is usually very nice), but this time was Rude, Unapologetic, and LIED: "That room was given out 2-3 days ago... I have Room 407 available and I'll move the person who has (already) booked that room into another" I balked at that (I was denied my choice of room & didn't want to do the same to someone else) but was told by Dean: "Well into every life a bit of rain must fall" In other words, being a Platinum Elite Member and booking 3 months ahead means absolutely NOTHING to the Staff! There were other problems: * A light was burned out ** There was a bottle of some sort wedged under the sofa in the room (which was NEVER Removed) *** There was no Hot Water Saturday or Sunday morning when I wanted to shower (and tat night we had to run the water in the shower over 10 minutes before it warmed up) **** There was no bath mat the first day ***** The 2nd morning there was no bottled water or tea bags (For this we pay $7.00 per day "Resort Fee") ****** If you have a "Green Card", you may NOT make use of your "medicinal" smoke in the rooms, if you do, they charge you an additional $250 per night cleaning charge All I'm going to say is: Not again will I stay there........ The rooms are not inexpensive, nor are they all equal for equal pricing, the place is like a maze (had I not stayed in 407 before, I'd have gotten lost). Parking is $16 a night (if you have AAA you get a discount) they own their 3 parking lots and there are NEVER enough spaces...

« Service the Old Fashion Way »

The hotel rates high in quality and location but the outstanding feature is the food and over-all service received at every turn. Location, location, location in a historic setting is important to a scientist who needs a break from the "structured system" business people encounter on each trip. Take a walk on the wild side in safety and comfort at this hotel. John Wayne Kennedy

« not what was promised »

went for husbands 50th birthday weekend, staff asked for his name. Said he would be greeted with a happy birthday by staff upon checking in and our room would have extra accommodations at no extra cost which also did not happen. I tried to mention this to the clerk however she had no interest in hearing me and said I would need to speak to a manager the following day. (checkout). The upper parking garage was a nightmare under construction with no visible signs taking us over an hour to finally find it. Once ending up back at the lobby to complain to the manager on site asking for better directions.

    « Second time »

Nice place with great access to Old Town Historic Park. Room was clean and comfortable. Nice pool with hot tub. Comfortable beds. Nice on site Mexican restaurant with bar. They give you a coupon for a free drink when you check in. Parking on site at 16 per night. In and out privileges. Many may stairs. NOT handicapped accessible so if you have mobility issues, not a good choice. Otherwise, nice kid range hotel at a good price.

« I did not want to leave... »

Great location for the exploration of old town. We arrived early and our assigned room was not ready, so they upgraded us. The room was spacious and clean, very comfortable. Our room was in the 300 wing and right near the parking garage (very convenient for the 3 am departure we needed to make). I really wish we could have stayed more than one night.

« Lovely and slightly quirky hotel in Old Town »

First the quirky: the buildings are scattered around a hillside, so finding your room, or the restaurant, is something of a maze. (The desk clerk gave directions.) My room was a mini-suite: a small sitting room, bathroom, and bedroom, plus a small deck looking out over old town. The room was comfortable, and the breeze coming up the hill was delightful. My room came with a bunch of freebies - coupons for free drinks & free breakfast, some of which I used. But this doesn't seem to be uniform - my colleague didn't get as many freebies as I did. Staff was friendly and helpful. Location is fabulous, just a block from the shopping/dining areas. I would definitely stay there again.

    « What a disappointment !!!!!!! »

Booked two rooms at this hotel for a family trip with my daughter and grandchildren,....one a king and one a mini-suite King. From the outside this hotel is very attractive and inviting. Even the pictures on line look great but seeing is believing and the mini suite was particularly dingy and worn. The cheaper room was actually better. At time of booking I requested that the rooms be near each other because of the children but they were in separate buildings and two flights of outside stairs away. I checked with the front desk and they said there was nothing they could do. I even offered to pay more. So we just accepted it because with the kids we needed to get them settled in for dinner time and bedtime . The kids stayed with me in the suite which felt unsafe because of a second rear door from the bedroom leading to a small small patio overlooking a dumpster and parking lot. The air conditioner was a wall unit that was so open you good see the dumpster. Did not feel safe at all . The bathroom had a chipped and rusted tub and the hair dryer blew before I could even start to dry my hair. Overall this whole experience was a very big disappointment especially for the money spent on two rooms. Please reconsider staying here. It is just terrible!

« Pretty but with some niggling flaws »

The Hacienda Hotel is in a great location close to Old Town, shops and restaurants. It is very pretty and nicely decorated with flowers and fountains. The room was comfortable, clean and spacious, and the lobby is comfortable and inviting. However, there are several areas where it could do much better. We stayed in building 600, at the very top of the property, and the instructions on how to reach it, using three elevators, were very confusing - the signs on how to get from one part of the property to another could be much clearer. (If you have any issues with mobility, make sure to book a room lower down!). We were charged $16 per night for parking, and then told that the parking area near our room was very small so we might not get a space. This is an outrageous charge, especially as it is the same rate for people not even staying at the hotel! With all the additional resort fees, room fees, etc., the initial nightly rate is almost doubled. The third issue was internet access, which was very sporadic - it was not clear which wifi site to access and it was down several times during our stay. The Tequila Factory restaurant, attached to the hotel, seems rather chaotic. We asked if it was possible to have an a la carte breakfast rather than the buffet, and three different waiters and waitresses told us they didn't know!

    « Good location »

Very good location - if you want to spend the evening in Old Town - this is the best place for the night. Everything is "around the corner". Also when you check in - you will receive few coupons for welcome drinks or salsa in restaurants near by. Not everywhere you will have access to internet connection, but breakfast are very tasty.

    « Hacienda San Diego »

The hotel is in the heart of Old Town San Diego CA. The hotel give you the feel of the Mexican influences in the area. It is a huge hotel that is extremely busy. Arrive early in order to get the best rooms. Stay away from the 600 area as it is the further rooms from everything thing and requires you to walk a lot of stairs. The 200 - 300 sections are the best

    3
    « Resort Fee??? »

I have stayed at this property many times in the past and just recently they have a new $7.00 resort Fee?? Nothing has changed at this property except the addition of this fee. Just increase the cost of the room by $7.00 instead of pretending to be a Las Vegas style property and gouging us for another $7.00 for nothing.

« Looks great, then you climb a lot of stairs »

Vertically built hotel, a critical elevator was out of service the entire week I was there. Front desk is understaffed, with little options for surge - if more than 2 customers are there, it's a bad line. No express checkout. In and area surrounded by great food places (Old Town), the restaurant is average for the neighborhood in both quality and price.

    2
« Only if you cannot find another place! »

Service was terrible. Never showed up with the corkscrew they said they would bring. Construction outside the room. Great if you want a 7:00am wake up call using a jackhammer! Otherwise nice hotel in a good location if you are coming or going from San Diego International.

« Great View of Old Town »

Check in was extremely slow, but friendly, people were lined up, the rooms are located in a couple separate units up the hill from the main office, and due to some road construction on the side road, we had to park in the underground parking and pack all our luggage about 1 block "all up hill" to get to the unit. I felt they should have recommended us and supplied us with a rolling luggage cart or a bell boy. Once we got everything into the room, it was clean, and great views.

« Avoid at all costs »

The Best Western Old Town Hacienda is a nightmare. The source of the nightmare is a broken elevator. On checking in, the desk clerk, who talked like a robot, show me a map and told me to drive my car to the top level of the parking garage, exit the garage, turn right, walk past three houses (?Three houses?? ?Yes, ma'am?) and then I would see the building where my room was. There was road construction going on so we could not park in the garage connected to our building. I understand that road work is beyond the control of the hotel, but it was extremely inconvenient. We had to walk about a hundred yards up a steep hill with our luggage. Robo-clerk did not offer help with our luggage. I returned to the front desk to ask for a room in the main building but was told there weren't any available (it was only 4:00 in the afternoon). My husband asked if there was a way to get to the parking lot around the road construction. Robo-clerk shoved a map at us and said ?Go around? with no explanation. My husband has a lot more patience than I. We tried to find the detour but could not so we ignored the road construction and drove up to the garage of the building where our room was. The next day we discovered that there was an elevator that would have made everything a lot easier, but it was broken. We found it annoying that the broken elevator was not mentioned. That night, as I was about to walk the hundred yards up the hill IN THE DARK (no street lights) I saw a young girl with luggage looking very puzzled. I helped her find her room. This was a young girl, alone, in the dark, who had not been offered help with her luggage or in finding her room. At this point I called the front desk to chastise them for allowing a young girl to walk the hundred yards uphill in the dark. The desk clerk made a lot of excuses and I asked to speak to the manager. The manager listened and responded calmly and was apologetic and said he would speak to his staff. Oh, I forgot to mention that a rat ran past me in the parking lot.

    « Beautiful landscapes »

I stayed in the 700 building for over 2 1/2 months. The staff is very friendly and pleasant. If you have a question or need something they can help you out and/or point you in the right direction. The Tequila Factory staff are awesome and very friendly and treat you like family. I will always stay at the Hacienda when I go to San Diego. If night life is your thing then it is within walking distance and always pleases everyone. If you are more relaxed and just want a quiet evening then stay in and enjoy the balcony or Promenade level and the cozy atmosphere.

    3
« Good location, lacking in other areas »

We stayed only one night at the Best Western Hacienda. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable and it was clean. It is in a good location if you want to be in Old Town. The property is sprawling and it was difficult to find our room. We had several pieces of luggage and their only two luggage carts were sitting there filled with luggage. It didn't appear anyone was using them. I asked the desk clerk if there was a cart we could use and was told "maybe you could find one around the corner". When I couldn't, it was met with a shrug of her shoulders. The room numbering is confusing. We are hauling our luggage around trying to find our room. Went back to the front desk and said we couldn't find it and the desk clerk replied "it's really not that hard". Our friends were in a room at the top of the property. There was no working elevator and they had to walk up a big hill pulling luggage. Later that evening, we came across a young woman trying to get her luggage up the hill. She was struggling. It was dark and she had a long walk uphill with no offer of assistance from the hotel staff. So - if you are looking for a hotel with friendly staff with a goal of providing customer service, this is not the hotel for you. If you want a room near Old Town, go for it.

    2
« Worst time in a long time »

We have stayed here many times and this was by far the worst. Cleanliness of room was in much needed attention. We were put in the most remote room on the property. We were very disatified. I was disgusted by the dirty microwave and coffee pot. Bathroom was not up to standards. Very poor outlets for charging phones, etc. Internet was slow and hit and miss. TV channels were few. Requested extra pillows and towels in advance and room on plaza floor but were given no choice but the 600 building. Construction made us walk half a block up hill to room. Elevator was broken and no shuttle service for 70+ guests

    2
    « Wouldn't be my first choice »

I stayed in the 600 level, which is about 8 vertical blocks straight up. The critical elevator to make life easier was OUT OF ORDER the entire week. One day, I wouldn't complain - but I bet it's still not working. Security - there is none. The hotel map lists "keyed gates" , but that is not true. There is no security whatsoever. Anyone can enter the hotel property from any street, or just thru the garage entrances. On the up side, BW Hacienda is centrally located, convenient to Old Town. Staff are superstars, true professionals. They do make you feel like you're coming home, and I loved that. I will never stay there again, b/c I don't want to climb Mt Everest every night, and an "Out Of Order" sign for a week just says LAZY to me.

« Best place to stay in Old town San Diego »

The location of the hotel was excellent for our purposes. We were there to visit University of San Diego as a prospective college for my daughter. The hotel was walking distance to the transit station and from there we rode buses not only to the college, but also the grocery store, beaches and a mall. In addition we walked all over Old Town to shop and eat.

« Beautiful Hotel with great views »

Great hotel with great amenities. We always stay at this hotel which has a great location to old town San Diego. I only wish the swimming pool would be larger, but overall it is great place to stay. I stayed in the highest building and was given a great balcony room with a great view of San Diego

« Watch Out for Double Charges! »

My family and I stayed in this hotel for two nights. The hotel itself is beautiful and generally the staff is great! This time- the tub didn't hold water- and the big issue was that we were charged twice! When I called to have it resolved-They didn't help!

    4
« Cool place close to SPAWAR »

I like staying here because it's a different place to stay. It's clean and friendly. The rooms are open and nice. The views are great and it's a short trip to old town for food or work. El presidente club is great for food and drinks. Here is a pic of how it is right now from my balcony.

« Great location and nice clean property »

We have stayed at this hotel a few times and definitely will stay again. The airport shuttle service is very convenient and the breakfast is very good. The location is great, right in the Old Town and so close by the bus and trolley stations. The rooms were clean and comfortable and also come with free bottled water each day. Can't wait to go back!

    2
    « ROAD CONSTRUCTION »

Better check the status of the road construction which required a detour to access ramp and also a wait when leaving the ramp because construction blocked the driveway. Wifi is terrible, we ended up having to purchase additional data from our carrier. There was a huge gap between the hotel door and the frame meaning we could hear EVERYTHING that went on in the hall and probably was a security issue, in retrospect.

    5
    « Perfect Location »

We stayed at this lovely hotel for 12 nights and didn't want to leave, a lovely property spread out over several buildings set on a hillside. We were lucky to have a room not too far from the reception area, but I would imagine some rooms to be quite a hike away. There are elevators dotted about, which make it easier to get around. Our room was large with a little living room area complete with fridge, microwave, coffee maker etc. Everything you could possibly want really. The room was clean, well stocked and had a very efficient air cooler. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the hotel is in a perfect location, opposite the Morman Battalion site and the Heritage park, The Whaley house is on the next corner and there are many restaurants, bars and attractions with a very short walk. The trolley station is less than a 10 minute walk and that can get you to all the main tourist sites. The MTS service in San Diego is very efficient. We had a complimentary breakfast which was very good, there was plenty of choice. Not everyone seemed to have a complimentary breakfast, so may be worth checking with your tour operator or when you book. It really set us up for the day, and everything tasted good. Only down side was the noise on our first couple of nights, large family groups would congregate outside around the tables to chat/drink etc and thought it was acceptable to carry on till well after 11pm. Its not, security will deal with it quickly if you call them. You can also hear the trains going by, but that isn't a problem. The Wi-Fi is terrible, and very hit and miss. Sometimes we could get a connection in our room, but mostly we couldn't. We gave up trying in the end. I would definitely stay here again.

« Nice rooms, poor layout, questionable service »

The rooms are fine: clean, in good repair. There was a long line at check-in, with cars filling the small drive up area forcing some to block the sidewalk and wait in the street. The layout of the property is a labyrinth of stairs and walkways among 6 buildings. They put us in Building 6 at the top of the hill, but the road was being worked on, so we had to drive a mile or so from the lobby on a circuitous route through the hillside neighborhoods to get to our building parking. Then trying to find the restaurant or the lobby on foot involved numerous stairways up and down from building to building, following sketchy directions from staff that we encountered along the way. And of course one of the elevators en route was out of service. Then to add insult to injury, we got called out of bed at 7:00 this morning to tell us that we had to get our car out of the parking lot immediately because they were digging up the road. When I asked the front desk why they even put us in that building knowing that we were to be there for two nights, she answered, "_I_ didn't put you there." Not the kind of response to calm my great annoyance. We had hoped the hotel woud be convenient to walk around Old Town at will, but the location up the hill made it too difficult to do more than once, as we're both around 60 and one of us is handicapped. I think I'm swearing off Best Western after this and the horrible experience in Washington, D.C. a few years ago.

« You will not want to leave »

Hotel was clean and quaint. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We arrived early and our room was upgraded because our original room was not ready at check in. I will definitely stay here again when in San Diego. The bar/lounge was nice. View from the restaurant was incredible.

    « beautiful garden spaces »

Very beautiful with lots different levels on the hill where every level is a relaxing place to lounge. The staff is very friendly from the front desk to the restaurant and bar. The driver to and from the airport was helpful with the luggage and offered to drive you around the different tourist areas during the stay.

« Beautiful hotel in the heart of Old Townsend »

This is a beautiful property in the heart of Old Town San Diego, within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and historic landmarks. Parking and breakfast are not included in the price of the room, like the majority of Best Western hotels. This is an older hotel and if you have problems with stairs, be sure to ask for a ground floor room, as the elevator was out-of-order at the time of our stay. Staff was helpful, we were given two drink tickets for the restaurant on the property, that we never used.

    5
    « Great Location »

We Loved our room and the location. With in walking distance of Old Town. The people working there were very helpful and the view from the patio was very nice. We didn't get to use the pool on this stay but, hope to the next time we stay. The bar area was very nice.

    « Pretty Hotel »

We stayed for 2 nights. Only issue, the TV was over 20 feet away from place to sit and watch. As two women traveling alone we felt very safe here. The hotel is one block from Old Town and looks out over most of the area. Nicely decorated and landscaped. Pool and hot tub were nice but I would make sure your room was not over that area. Will stay again.

« Best Westen Plus Hacienda »

I love this hotel, it is always my first choice when staying in San Diego. The proximity to Old Town State Park adds to the atmosphere. It is minutes from downtown. Always clean and comfortable. The hotel has a very cheerful and friendly staff. The Tequila factory Restaurant is excellent and the terrace provides on of the best views of Mission Bay area. All in All if you are looking for more than just a hotel room , whether for business or pleasure the Best Western Plus Hacienda is hard to beat.

« More pros than cons »

If you are lucky enough to get a room with a balcony the views are great. The rooms are very clean but the decor is dated. If you always use an elevator this is not the place for you. There are stairs, stairs and more stairs.

« Old Town in San Diego in California »

We stayed for 3 nights at Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town in San Diego in California and were grateful for and very happy with how clean and large the room was. Coffee, sugar, tea and cleaning materials (detergent etc) were all provided which was something we weren't expecting, the toiletries were replenished during our stay.Safe in the room. Shuttle from and to airport. The people at the front desk were very friendly and accommodating. Great restaurant and bar on property. Heated pool and whirlpool overlooking the city. Parking on the site. We are giving 5 stars. If you're looking for somewhere close to all the sites at San Diego at reasonable price then I can definitely recommend Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town . Thank you! I am telling my friends to go here and when I go back to S.D I will be staying with Hacienda Hotel again for sure.

« Great location and great sleeping! »

Steps away from Old Town, this moderately priced hotel offers excellent rooms and service. The only thing lacking was the formerly-free breakfast was now included only if you paid an additional price for the room, and the breakfast offered was not worth that extra.

    « Wonderful stay! »

We loved the ambience of the hotel. It was very relaxed and gave us the feeling of being in another country - the flowers, the fountains and greenery were beautiful. The staff was wonderful and gave us a great room. We had a little problem with the internet, and a technician came up and helped us. The room was clean although a bit dated. But we didn't come to stay in the room the whole time either. We wanted to be walking distance to Old Town and not have to drive anywhere as it was just a short get-a-way for us. We were able to have the complimentary buffet breakfast one day and the champagne brunch the next day! Great food, great service at the Tequila Factory. We will come back again for the great location, great value and pretty nice rooms with awesome views!

« Great Place, just OK this time »

We have stayed here before. GREAT Location, in walking distance to everything. This time the bed was hard as a rock. and the "suite" we had was like we were in the garage apartment at someones house.. the air was in the window unit..which didn't extend to the front room, which made it very hot/cold... when we stayed at this hotel before, we had central hear/air.. I have had better experiences at this hotel. It is a clean and friendly hotel. It is pricey, that is why i expect certain things.. and they have delivered in the past. This time not so much.

« Decent location- no frills hotel »

So... people LOVE the location of this hotel because it is walking distance to Old Town. We really were not that impressed with what Old Town had to offer. As far as the amenities of the hotel are concerned, I would rate it 2.5 to 3 stars- pretty basic. If you are really particular, you may even think of it as a Motel, since the rooms are accessed through the outside...

The hotel staff was awesome. They were there to assist with anything that came up during my 10 week stay. The bar staff treated us like we were from the local residence. Nice atmosphere throughout the hotel property.

    « Watch the billing... »

The staff was more than helpful, having arrived early. We got a king mini-suite early, with extra windows since it was on the end. I was aware of the ambient noise and maze like layout, so this was not an issue for us. We did not drive because of the location, so the parking charges were not an issue. The shuttle van was available to us if the driver was not out on an airport run. I would pay the resort fee for that. The rooms are dates, and that's okay too. The breakfast buffet was normal fare. The w-fi was definitely a hot-spot only freebie in the lobby, unless you were REALLY close. My wifi worked in the mini living room, but not the bedroom 10 feet away. What upset me was the "hold" they put on my credit card for the full amount of the room PLUS $75 for incidentals, then billed me again when I checked out. Both the "hold" and full bill are showing up as pending charges, so now my credit card is locked down and is incurring an over the limit fee. I assumed that once we checked out and actually paid the bill that the "hold" would go away, but it is still pending, and when I called, the clerk said it would all be returned to me in a couple of days. I only requested a $1000 limit on this card for a reason, and now with both charges, I am on lockdown. I am NOT happy about this.

    « Disappointed »

We have stayed here before and it was nice. But this time we were very disappointed. When we got ready to go to bed it was late and as we opened the bed we found hair on the sheets. My husband called in the morning and asked to have them changed but sadly the next night the sheets were still the same dirty ones we had the night before. The shower did not drain and the bathroom floor was dirty with hair and crud on the floor. We didn't have any washcloths and had to call twice before we could get any to take a shower. We probably won't stay here again

    « Beautiful hillside property »

I just held my annual sales team meeting for 16 at the Hacienda. The property is spread out over several buildings with staircases (and elevators) throughout. The Spanish style with plants, courtyards, and fountains was really lovely and my team thoroughly enjoyed staying there. The hotel rooms are a bit dated but they were busy making upgrades. Bed was comfortable. All staff members we encountered were very friendly and helpful. I specifically worked with Sidona, Susan, Jonathan, Maria, and all were great! All rooms seemed to be different from each other and great views across to the ocean from the higher level rooms. The Old Town area was steps outside the lobby, close to many restaurants, shops, and parks. One night we walked 4 or 5 blocks to the trolley and took that downtown to the Gas Light district which was really fun. Highly recommend!

« Love the Hotel, Hated Room Location »

I felt that we were given a room way by the far end corner by the laundry room, because I received it off my points. I was not pleased with other guest washing at 7 am or so on a Sunday morning and then wait outside the window for the clothes and talk outside our door and window. Felt my morning relax day was wasted. I really love this hotel and the staff, didn't like where my room was located.

    4
    « Hit or Miss.... »

Don't stay in building 7. You will be woken up at all hours of the night by garbage and delivery trucks. The iron didn't work properly, it dumps water out all over your clothes. The ac wouldn't turn on for awhile, at one point I was sweating. We moved to building 5 after the first night. Additional problems occurred. I had to unplug the fridge because it made a loud noise. There are only around 20 channels on the tv and many of them aren't a clear signal. The tv in my room, the HD hookup was blocked so I ended up watching Netflix on my laptop. The hotel doesn't offer complimentary breakfast so be ready to walk down the street or order room service. On the plus side, the room in building 5 was nice, awesome views, the bed was comfortable, the staff was nice, it's walking distance to everything, and the grounds are kept up very well. Another thing to be prepared for though, a few of the elevators were out and you have to climb at least 50-100 steps depending on which building you are in. Hope you are in shape! It's a unique hotel for the location but be prepared for a few things to not be quite right.

    « Bad recommendation »

We were sent here by a tourist information person at Balboa Park. She highly recommended this hotel and the adjoining restaurant. Both were terrible. The rooms were not clean, needed repairs and new furniture. You couldn't sit on the sofa without sliding off. The train went by every half hour at night blowing it's whistle. One of our rooms was under the stairs and so dark that you couldn't tell if it was night or day. The maid started vacuuming outside our door at 6:30 a.m.! Parking was $16 extra. We each got a "free" margarita at the restaurant but it tasted terrible. The waitress did not return to see if we wished to purchase another or stay for dinner. We didn't!

« Excellent Location Excellent Service Excellent all the way around! »

We opted to spend a couple of nights in San Diego to facilitate going to a college basketball game. It was a great decision. We arrived about 3 p.m. Our room was ready. It was a super king. As you entered, there was a small living room office area. Down the hall, a small bathroom and then the bedroom area. Outside of our bedroom was a small balcony overlooking part of Old Town. We could see downtown in the distance. The bed was a little hard for our taste and the lighting in the bathroom could have been better, but the AMBIENCE and LOCATION made up for any complaints. The staff is quite accommodating. We ate the breakfast buffet. The first morning the coffee was not hot, but they quickly remedied that. The next morning the coffee was piping hot. We had eggs and bacon to order. Eggs cooked as ordered. Nice! We also were given free drink coupons for their restaurant. We had margaritas on the rocks - made perfectly. We will definitely stay here again. The location is excellent and the staff get an A++.

Easy walk to Old Town San Diego. Offers Breakfast and Dinner for free! Outstanding property with great views. Bathrooms are little dated. Rooms are clean and neat. GREAT STAFF! Stayed for business, would gladly stay for personal vacation. Close to interstates to easily get where ever you destination is.

« Ratty, Tatty, and Noisy »

The exterior looks just fine, and so does the lobby. But the rooms have really disgusting old satiny-material bed spreads, the beds a lumpy and the showers are ancient. NOTE: This hotel is right nearby a commuter train line. The trains run all day and night. They BLAIR their horns throughout the night, every hour on the hour. It does not matter which you are in, you'll hear them LOUD and clear. The front desk staff is not likely to help, unless it is a manager. Gonna stay here? Good luck to you.

« Ideal location, authentic feel in an older hotel. »

I loved the quaint & authentic feel to this place. An absolutely excellent location for Old Town. Perhaps the room and bathroom could do with a little modernization, but I wasn't disappointed, it was fitting to its surroundings. Parking was an additional cost in a multistorey car park next door. The one thing that let down my experience in this hotel, and not that I think a review of a particular individual experience is constructive, but I see other reviews mentioning reception staff. The checking in/welcoming process was cold & robotic. The young lady came across as rude and impatient. For such warm and charming surroundings this is a negative contrast. With an improvement in customer service I would stay here again.

« Hacienda Hotel Old Town »

Love the location and overall ambiance of this hotel. We like to visit old town San Diego often and this is the place we stay. The grounds are lovely and well manicured and the views are outstanding. The rooms are comfortable and have mini kitchens w/sink, refrigerator, and microwave and a nice sitting area. One would expect the house margaritas to be (at the very least) good being the name of the restaurant is Old Town Tequila Factory Restaurant and Cantina, however the opposite is true. The house margaritas are lousy and service at the cantina wasn't any better. Overall, the hotel is outstanding and there are plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance.

« Love the Hacienda Hotel in Old Town, San Diego »

The Hacienda is beautiful, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I go out of my way to stay and this hotel. The location is great if you want access to Old Town San Diego and plenty of good restaurants. Also an easy walk to the Trolley which takes you downtown and to other sites.

I had a wedding at Tequila Factory Restaurant Old Town San Diego. All of my wedding guests stayed here and EVERYONE loved their rooms. This is my favorite hotel to stay in everytime we go to San Diego. Love the atmosphere. It's very clean. Employees are very nice and love we can walk to shops and restaurants.

Great view. Easy walking distance to all great restaurants. Courtesy desk need to be friendlier. I think she needed a hug. Map from the hotel did not note fitness center. Free bar drinks, joke. If you like Bud, you are in luck. Fitness not bad. Room are very clean and you do not hear very much noise. Do not expect to park on the premises, even if you pay $10 for parking, good luck finding a parking spot on the premises. I ended parking on the side street.

Rooms are NOT clean, stale sheets, human feces on the floor and no working smoke detector, it was actually missing. Way overpriced for a motel 6 room. We won't be back here and we do not recommend this hotel. The location is why we choose it, but seriously not worth it. Keep looking.

    « Insensitive Hotel Manager »

My wife is a fulltime caregiver for her 101 year Godmother. We were unable to celebrate Valentines on Sunday, 2/14/2016, so this was our Valentine's getaway. When I registered I asked if they had a Jacuzzi and bathtubs in the rooms. My wife has bad knees and heat therapy soothes some of the pain. I was told "yes" for both questions. When we arrived we were assigned a room that had not been cleaned. I needed to go back to the front desk to get another room. We moved to another room. We went to the pool for a while. Before leaving the pool we went in the Jacuzzi. It was only warm. I called the front desk and was told they were working on it. Later that evening I called & was told they were unable to make repairs. We missed out on the Jacuzzi. My wife decided to take a hot bath. Unfortunately, the drain stopper didn't work & wouldn't hold water for a hot bath. At check out I complained to the manager, "Bill". I emphasized this was our Valentines getaway. He seemed insensitive to our ruined stay, but wanted us to comeback. The best he could do was offer 50% off our next stay. This is unacceptable. The next day I looked at the charges on my credit card. We were overcharged. I was really bothered by this and called the hotel. I was told the charge was for incidentals & we would be credited the overcharged amount. I believe there was an error or someone forgot to remove the charges at checkout. I talked to the manager Bill again and he apologized but kept repeating the charges were for incidentals. Incidentals we never used & didn't understand why we were charged this on my credit card. I feel if I had not caught this overcharge, it would not have been rectified. Needless to say, this hotel is insensitive to their guests needs. It is a Valentines getaway we want to forget. We will not be returning to this Best Western Hotel.

    « Never Again »

Hotels are often selected-booked enroute if driving duo. It is difficult to catch all the fine print, if it even exist, in hotel listing. This might have been the case here. We would not have chosen to stay one night where requiring a "Parking Fee" ($16/night) & "Resort Fee" ($7/Accom). At check-in we objected but had no choice...our room rate, resort fee and taxes were prepaid non-refundable. It was late evening. It got worse. Included were 2 Tickets for a "Margarita, Wine or Draft Beer" at their Tequila Factory bar. At the top of the tickets:"Welcome Drink"..."With Our Compliments". Nice. Until, I read the small bottom line "Welcome Drink included in Hotel Resort Fee. (Gratuity not included)". Whoa. So I am required pay the Hotel $7 for the Resort Fee and they "give" me two $7 "free" drinks. Maybe OK but the weak margaritas were only worth $0.50 ea. My "sneaky cost issues" stated herein were reported to "Rich", the manager on duty, before going to the TF. A waste of time...I hate being quoted "policy" by a human, much less a manager. What if I had been a teetotaler? Including my $5 tip with the "forced" $7 resort fee, my NET loss here was only $11 plus the $16 parking rip-off for a total of $27 net over the hotel rate expected on the Hotel.com booking arrangement. Never Again, at this Worst Western. Best Western won't see me back anywhere in the world for a long time (and I travel many months each year)!

« Bring your sherpa and lets go mountain climbing. »

Actually, I must admit the climbing part was my fault, due to requesting a "view room", which just happened to be located at the top of the property. I'm a little late in posting this review, as our stay was back in December, right after Christmas, but I wanted to share my impressions of the hotel. It was a spur of the moment decision to get away for a couple of days between Christmas and New Years Day, and I really didn't think we had a chance to get a reservation, but the great front desk staff were able to secure us a view room, exactly as requested. Upon arrival, we were directed to a parking garage at the top of the property. From there, it was several flights of stairs down a hill to our room. Once in our room, we were pleasantly surprised with a great view, looking out across Old Town San Diego and out toward the distant bay. The room was clean and nicely appointed, and had a large French door opening out to our balcony. We were located on the second floor of building six, and had no noise from our third floor neighbors, and only slight noise from the people using the pool below our balcony. The fun really started when we decided to walk through the property to access Old Town. It's like a maze of stairwells, courtyards and elevators, that only access certain floors, but not others, very confusing. I began to laugh as we were walking through the property, map in hand, and several times, would meet another group, map in hand, just as lost as ourselves. Ultimately, we were able to figure the "lay of the land", and found our way to Old Town and back again. At this point, I must urge those of you who are in less than good condition, to request a room closer to the reception area or elevators, to eliminate the need for stair climbing and Sherpa guides. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, the only problem being a double charge on my credit card for room service ordered from their on site restaurant. Upon discovering the charges, I called the manager and he removed them from my bill. All in all, I would recommend this hotel for it's great location and reasonable rates, and will return on our next visit to town.

« Adventure in Old Time California »

The Hacienda is a beatiful hotel, with Spanish architecture, terraces, including a plaza all nestled on a hillside. Rooms are lovely and the food at the resturant is American Spanish cusine. The buffets have a great variety to please everyone. The hotel is within walking distances of many resturants, quaint shops and the historical "Old Town San Diego" with a glance the history of California's beginings. Within a short driving distance is the Sea Port mall, harbor cruises, Balboa Park, the wonderful San Diego zoo, Sea World Park and along with many other fun things to see and do during your visit.

    « Great Location! »

Tucked behind the Whaley House is Is a hidden gem, BW Hacienda Hotel. We stayed here for Valentine's Day. It's right in the middle of some great restaurants. My wife and I enjoyed The Old Town Mexican Cafe (Get some corn & flour tortillas as an appetizer! You won't be sorry!) The Old Town Tequila Factory Restaurant & Cantina is conveniently located on the hotel grounds (4th level - they even have their own stop on the elevator) Be prepared to walk to your room. I recommend you pay the extra $16 and get the parking pass. There is absolutely no place to park around Old Town unless you're extremely lucky. I enjoyed the room and the setting is like an old villa on a hillside.

« Very good Old Town hotel »

Attractive hotel ideally located for the Old Town. Our room (note all rooms accessed externally) was large and clean. UK visitors note that price stated does not include two lots of tax, service charge and car parking. Very good Mexican food restaurant with great views and there is a nice swimming pool. Apart from the Cosmopolitan, other Old Town hotels are located further out. If you are looking for a mid range hotel in Old Town, I would recommend the Hacienda.

« Has that old California feeling. »

I've stayed at the Hacienda a few times and love the style. It seems to fit right into the Old Town landscape. It takes a while to find your way around because of the lay out and all the levels. It is not a hotel for anyone with walking problems. There are elevators but could be a long walk to/from your room to the elevator. The free shuttle to/from the airport is great but not available early in the morning. There is a resort fee and parking fees. Love the coffee available in the lobby each morning with flavored creamers. Sometimes the staff at the front desk can be overly busy. The last time I was there was for a family vacation and had reserved two rooms, they put us in rooms that where not only apart but in different buildings and different levels. Not good. Know there is a bunch of negatives for this property but still love the feel of it. The photo's posted where a few years back but area is still the same.

Wonderful ambiance of Old Town, San Diego. Service was great and the location makes you feel like you're in a mexican village. The affiliated restaurant has great service and a neat view of San Diego. The terracing of the facility makes you forget you're in a hotel.

« Beautiful Hotel but with several architectonic barriers »

Beautiful Hotel but with several architectonic barriers. Not good for elderly or physically challenged people. Lot of stairs and hills. If you decide to stay, make sure to ask for a room close to the main building were the lobby is (avoid building 6, which is too far from the main lobby and isolated from the rest of the hotel!). Parking is very limited in high season. We needed to park in the street. Parking is really NOT GUARANTEED, even if you pay for the parking in the front desk. Very convenient location, close to attractions stores and restaurants. Extremely beautiful appearance.

« Too much hassle and cost for return on value »

A pain to get to and had to pay additional 16 bucks to park!!! A trek to get to the hotel from the parking garage and even though view good, the pool area was noisy. Felt a bit spendy for being so old in style and the tv channel viewing was very very very limited. Beds were hard and with the high price of this place, should be top of the line. Overall, ok but not worth the hassle to get to or the price they charge.

The Best Western Hacienda Hotel Old Town, San Diego, California was a nice experience in general and a very nice get a way from wife and I. Hotel was clean, friendly and a nice location to celebrate your anniversary or any celebration that comes along. The only thing that upset us was that we were charged $15 to park even though we stayed at hotel. Had a bad experience with the Tequila Factory but nothing to do with hotel. Otherwise would recommend to stay.

« Not a bad hotel, if you bring ear plugs »

My daughter and I stayed here during a recent trip to San Diego. The location in Old Town is lovely - easy walking distance but not right on top of the bars and restaurants. The room was basic and out-dated, but perfectly comfortable. Think late-70's Southwestern decor. The biggest complaint we had was the noise. Our room was right by the pool, so we could hear people drinking in the hotel until 10 each night. Worse, though, were the extremely thin walls between rooms. At one point I heard someone snoring, and all in our room were awake. The complementary breakfast is edible, but nothing special. Lukewarm buffet eggs and hash browns, cereal, yogurt, and melon. The staff were very helpful, except one member of the desk staff told us it would take about an hour to get to the zoo, which is only 15 minutes away by cab. Speaking of cabs, if you need one, I'd suggest you call yourself. If you ask the desk staff, they will call the Limaxi service, which sends lovely black cars but costs almost twice as much as a regular taxi. San Diego has a wonderful service that lets you request a cab online or by text that is super simple to use.

« Good Location Staff needs work on customer service »

THE LOCATION OF THIS HOTEL IS EXCELLENT RIGHT IN OLD TOWN SAN DIEGO A+. This hotel was very hard to find in the dark and is located on a hillside and has several levels all accessible by multiple sets of stairs. Best Western lists an elevator but the staff did not mention and I did not see an elevator. Although I did not need an elevator this information is for others. Room was very difficult to find due to layout of property. Had to go back to lobby to ask for directions to room again but it was still no help. I eventually found the room. There are several parking structures around the property and it is hard to determine where to park could not find where the desk clerk told me to park. More signage maybe by the street would be helpful with room numbers. The grounds are very nice though and reflect Old Town San Diego. You can see all of San Diego from this location and the fact the hotel sits on a hillside. There is also a pool, hot tub, exercise facilities and free wifi no breakfast though. There is a restaurant onsite but the restaurant closes too early 9pm I had to go without dinner. The restaurant also has a bar why close at 9pm? Other restaurants in Old Town were still open. There are plenty of restaurants in Old Town within walking distance. The catcher here they gave me a coupon for a free drink but I could not use it because the restaurant was closed. All I did after check-in was locate the room which probably took me 15 minutes and put my bags I the room. At least keep the bar open with appetizers. The restaurant is open for breakfast. The restaurant is a Mexican food restaurant Old Town Tequila Factory. Rooms were clean and nicely appointed to reflect the area. Parking is also a $10 charge I believe. Another problem I experienced was at check-in I reserved the standard rate off the hotels website and requested a AAA rate at check-in due to it not being available on the site. I asked the clerk to honor the AAA 10 discount at check-in as Best Western is a preferred partner of AAA. The clerk said I already got a discount. I said I book the best available rate on the website you are required to honor a AAA 10% discount. He argued with me over $10 the bellman finally came over and told him to just give me the discount. Hospitality 101 make the guest happy don't argue just give the discount MAKE THE GUEST HAPPY. This hotel is also convenient to all San Diego attractions with easy access to I-5.

« Great place to stay »

A true taste of the "Old Southwest" in great comfort. Each room has it's own outside entrance. As you leave your room, you walk out onto a beautiful, open courtyard with a water fountain and palm trees in the center. At the front desk reception area, there is a comfortable seating area in front of a large fireplace that is very inviting. The hotel's location is within walking distance of many local attractions in the "Old Town" San Diego district. Hotel staff were all pleasant and helpful. Our room was always clean and fresh when we returned to it after spending the day at the many nearby attractions in the San Diego City area.

    « Old and Noisy... »

We had a decent night stay here, but not great. Overall the rooms are fairly clean, but everything is old. The bedspreads are dated, fixtures are old and the toilet/tub are in a faded pink color from years gone by. I've attached numerous photos to review. The place needs a remodel. Our room was also extremely noisy. There isn't much insulation because I could hear every noise outside my room in the evening, and then in the morning I could hear the muffled voices of people talking in the adjacent rooms. I would also say that the service is slow. I waited at least 15 minutes in line to check-in to my room and another 15 minutes to get a receipt before leaving. There are a ton of rooms at this place and only 2 people working the front desk. The biggest complaint: Parking! We were in the 600 wing which is around the block and past 3 houses (yes, it is separate from the rest of the hotel). I was told there was parking under the building, but when I pulled up all of the limited spaces were filled and the rest had old mattresses, wood and fixtures loaded up in the parking stalls (see photo). When I called the office I was told there is a 5-story parking structure down the street and under the restaurant. I had to haul my stuff out of the parking garage, walk uphill on a street past 3 houses and up the elevator to my room. Crazy! For that reason alone I won't return to this hotel. They charged me $16/night to park! If anyone in your group is old or has mobility issues, don't let them stick you in a 600 room. I did like that the hotel is right in Old Town and was close to restaurants and shops. With all of the other positive reviews, I was surprised at how much I didn't enjoy the place. It's overpriced for what you get.

« Great location and very comfortable »

This is the second time have stayed here, both times for a few nights. The location cannot be better its very close to all the attractions, bars and restaurants in the Old Town but it is far enough away to be quiet. The tiered and terraced construction makes it a very interesting layout and it provides many putdoor nooks to sit outside and enjoy the views and vegetation. Service is good and the Tequila Factory provides good breakfast, casual meals and drinks. Highly recommended.

« SOLID SERVICE, FINE ROOM »

Near everything in Old Town. Super people and service. Comfortable bed and an extremely clean room. Parking and the long walk to breakfast are not perfect situations, but really, not that big of a deal. The location, people and room make this a solid 5.

« Hacienda Hotel San Diego Old Town »

A beautiful facility, with a well-cared garden all over the place; and a stunning view of the city. The location at Old Town is a plus. Guests can walk to restaurants and shops and even the historic park. A lot of walking though to go from lobby to bedrooms to Tequila Factory Restaurant to meeting rooms. Sometimes very confusing which elevator to take and which floor to click.

    « Old Town visit »

Loved it except for their limited guest breakfast policy. Very questionable. If you book on a certain website you have to pay for your breakfast while other guests receive a breakfast voucher. We have never heard of that before and it was disappointing.

« Quaint Spanish style hotel »

It is in the center of Old Town. I love it's Spanish style with fountains, tiles, and general decor. There are rooms you can only get to by climbing some stairs. But the front desk staff always asks before giving you those rooms. Some rooms offer great views of Point Loma. The inside of the rooms are a little dated, but they are clean and well decorated. It has a parking garage attached.

« not your typical hotel - has a resort feel »

This is a beautiful hotel built on the hill side overlooking Old Town with views of the harbor, airport and MCRD. Walk out the front door or side gate and you are in Old Town. The hotel is built in a Spanish hacienda style and consists of several buildings on different levels giving it a resort feel. The hotel exterior is very well maintained, beautifully landscaped and offers lots of outdoor seating options. The rooms are looking a bit dated, but are very large and comfortable. We liked having a sitting area with a sofa and an outdoor sitting area with views. There is a restaurant and bar on the upper level of the property that offers stunning views and good food. This is our go to hotel when we are in San Diego because of the location, value and the overall feel of property. The staff and the van driver are an added bonus. Our only complaint is they have slow/poor wify service.

Designed to look like an old Hacienda, this place fits in perfectly with Old Town San Diego. The hotel was at a great value and pretty comfortable. Has free wifi, a microwave and TV of course. There is a GYM and because its in old town, you can walk to everything in Old town. I would stay here again if I'm in the area again.

Hacienda Best Western Plus situated on hill very convenient to Old Town restaurants and shops. A little bit dated, but nice "Spanish" decor theme, spacious outside seating plazas, friendly and helpful staff, average breakfast, cozy fireplace lobby. Had weak internet signal in and out. Plus points for cleanliness, good bed and pillows, roomy enough, safe at eye level carbon dioxide & smoke detectors, and ceiling fan. Negative: TV did not swivel on wall to watch from sofa nor from computer table, did not have non-slip surface in tub/shower.

Very nice hotel, reasonably clean, and they give very good customer service. My employer booked me here to conduct a seminar and I really hope I get to come back here often. « Great view, good rates, lots of stairs »

The restaurant at the top of the hill that seats this hotel is the awesome place, great views day and night, good food. Gas fire pits to enjoy. Parking was a problem at times, public garage on premises, $10 per night extra to park. Hotel is on a steep hill, if you cannot do stairs, stay away. Otherwise, it had nice rooms, near the airport and Old Town San Diego, with friendly staff and good amenities. Good value.

« Our ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE hotel »

My wife and I have been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit (all 50 states and a dozen or so foreign countries) I say that so that when you read that this is our favorite you'll know that we are not just comparing it to Grandpa Willie's Sugar Shack! The setting, layout and landscaping makes the Hacienda feel quite small when it actually has a lot of rooms. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant upstairs is great. Make sure you are there for the Sunday brunch. You will be amazed and quite satisfied with the quality and quantity of their food.

    « Lovely hotel »

One of the loveliest hotels I've stayed at, so different from the others as it's divided into separate buildings all joined together with staircases and walkways. I got very lost trying to find my room on the first day! But you get a map of the grounds at reception, which helps a lot! I really loved all the fountains that are dotted around the place - so peaceful! I also loved festive touches - the big Christmas tree and the free cookies and hot cider in reception were particular favourites. Originally I was in building in the '400 room' range (building 1 is '100', and so on). However, continuous problems with the wifi resulted in me being moved to another building where the internet actually worked. Both rooms were fantastic - large, with big beds and a sofa, and a table and chairs, so plenty of seating options. They leave complimentary bottles of water in the rooms as well, which was a lovely touch. I only stayed a couple of nights here - it's very close to SeaWorld and Old Town San Diego, which are all I wanted to see of that part of the city at the time. Definitely don't need a car to get to either. Old Town is in walking distance, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. To get to SeaWorld, it's just a short walk to the train station and then a quick bus ride to the park. I'd definitely stay here again (but not in building 4!)

    « Hacienda Hotel »

Beautiful hotel, the layout is lovely. the bedrooms are very large and comfortable. The hotel is built as if into the side of a hill. Each level has areas where you can sit and enjoy the weather. The evening meals are very good. Very large portions of Mexican food. On arrival we were given a voucher for a free Margarita, which was unexpected and of course very enjoyable. I can also recommend the Margaritas. The staff were very helpful telling us how to get tickets for the trolley bus service.

    « Charming hotel »

What a great, authentic place to stay. Rooms are a bit older but still nice sized with outdoor seating areas. The six separate buildings give privacy but not good for people with bad knees or mobility issues as there are a lot of stairs. Loved the tiled staircases and fountains, easy to find secluded areas to enjoy a cocktail or morning coffee. The hotel is also very close to all of the shops and restaurants. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it.

« The Hacienda Hotel in Old Town San Diego »

This is my favorite hotel in the San Diego area but I usually get turned away because I have to go by the US Government rate limit and I always need five or more rooms for two weeks. Considering how many rooms The Hacienda has I don't think two washers & dryers are enough. Otherwise it's a great place to stay with plenty of nearby things to do and places to eat. I have stayed here many times since 1995.

There are a boatload of stairs (multiple levels, and I mean MULTIPLE levels!!), and the place can be a bit confusing, but the rooms are great (clean, large, unique), and the location couldn't be better to explore Old Town and the rest of San Diego. We (also) probably like it because we can simply leave the car behind and spend an evening (or two) wandering around Old Town, checking out the various restaurants (there are a ton of good Mexican restaurants in the area-duh!), and exploring the plethora of shops and watering holes (there are a ton of those as well)! Then, when we're done for the night, we simply mosey on back to the hotel and our clean, comfortable room! Everything is within easy walking distance!! It's also perfectly situated to be your base from which to explore the rest of San Diego; from Point Loma, to Downtown. It's not a four star resort, and checking-in can be a drag due to the small "front desk" area, but there's something appealing about it that keeps us coming back time after time! Give it a try!

    « Great hotel »

What a lovely feel about this hotel, beautiful location in old town close to so many Mexican restaurants and the room for a family of five just wonderful. The lay out of the building was great with courtyards and the views brilliant. The service was first class, parking fair and reasonable and the walk in and out of old town safe and pleasurably short. Loved the hotel and its Mexican style theme. Would definitely stay again, 4 nights wasn't enough. Great hotel, great location, well done Hacienda.

« San Diego overnight trip »

We have stayed here on numerous occasions and we have no complaints. The staff is always friendly and helpful. We got complementary drink coupons at the tequila factory because the hotel fire alarm was going off. It went off for about an hour and we got free margaritas. No big deal.

customer service excellent, the grounds are pretty, yes it may seem confusing to some but to us it is quaint!! love it and keep going back!! we have been a few times and love the atmosphere, the tequila free drink is nice too!

Best hotel in San Diego for the value!! Centrally located with lots to do within walking distance. I was born and raised in San Diego and moved away ten years ago, but stay at the Hacienda every time I visit San Diego.

Love old town San Diego, a lot of history and many restaurant choices near by. Location is perfect The hotel is very cozy, clean and only steps away from old town. We enjoyed every moment can't wait to return!!

« Best Western PLUS Hacienda Hotel Old Town, San Diego »

Nice hotel with terrific views of San Diego from many of the rooms in buildings 4, 5 and 6. Not all rooms have a balcony, so you have to ask for one if that's important. Easy check-in and vehicle parking. Walking distance to Old Town where you can catch the Trolley going to Gas Lamp, Petco Park, Qualcomm and downtown S.D..

    « Always a great stay! »

Great hotel...always a pleasant experience. Staff are very nice and the facility is always well maintained. We have been staying at the Hacienda Hotel in Old Town San Diego for over 5 years...we enjoy the nice restaurants in Old Town and the ability to quickly hop in a cab and head downtown.

    « Noisy and a little spooky »

Maybe it was the tall ceiling, but there was something eerie about room 203. The toilet water would startle me in the middle of the night because it'd randomly run and create loud noises. Although I like the effort in trying to make the decor appear relevant to the historical times (antique bronze sconce, dark ceiling fan, dark column post), dark shutters.

    « Just not good »

Very convoluted..had to take multiple elevators to get to the room. Everyone walking around w/ maps. Signage horrible. Rooms need to be update. Old carpet and bathrooms. Staff is nice; Lobby was lovely. Drink coupons to Tequila Factory nice gesture, BUT, beware, they don't have tequila in the margarita's. Waiter affirmed that they just put a splash of tequila into a BIG amount MIX for those "free" margarita's

« Best Western San Diego Old Town »

This hotel is situated in the centre of Old Town with very close proximity to restaurants etc. Also 5 minutes walk to the tram station with frequent service to San Diego. This is a very attractive hotel, modern but built in the old Spanish style. Not recommended if you have difficulty with stairs as this is built on multiple levels. Let down a bit by the breakfast as there is very limited choice of hot food, but there are plenty of local cafes for breakfast.

    4
« Spacious with Local Flair »

Very interesting layout and great location for old town. Had a feel consistent with the locale. Clean and rooms were very spacious. Beds were good, refrigerator and microwave add to the deal. On site parking $15/day. Somewhat close to the airport. Would stay there again.

    2
« No way this the BEST »

The view is great, location perfect, architecture very inviting, but that's it. Unless you are lucky enough to get a top level room, there is no way you can relax in this cardboard wall hotel. The ceiling so squeaky that every movement of your upstairs neighbor makes you feel it's going to fall on your head. If someone who's checking in/out early wheels their luggage in the balcony, that's when your day starts as well. Will not be back even if it is free.

    « Hacienda a Good Value »

We always stay at the Hacienda when visiting San Diego -- about l time per year. The hotel is good value without being "budget". An older property, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Most have a sitting area as well as the usual beds, table/chairs, and dresser. Sofa's fold out into beds. Also available are mini-refrigerator, coffee/tea maker, and microwave. The people at the front desk will do their very best to accommodate a special request. A good place to stay even if it lacks perfection. Housekeeping can be forgetful of items like coffee packets and wash clothes. New mattresses would be a good thing. We will still return next year.

    « Our favourite ! »

This out of the way hotel is a gem beautifully positioned in Old Town. Airy rooms with shuttered windows (which you will need to use as walkways pass by) and tiled terraces. The restaurant is good but limited although we enjoyed the food. Close to a pottery outlet you can end up with a lot more than you arrived with.

« So much went wrong »

We had stayed at this property three years ago and remembered it as a positive experience. So when we decided to take a mini vacation to San Diego, we immediately booked on line for a pretty good price. We checked in and were directed to Building 600, which is at the top of the property (it is terraced) Our room was a bit dark (because the first floor is below street level, a quirk of the way the property is on a hill) but seemed nice. The first night the air conditioner seemed rather noisy but, ok, we could deal with that. But the walls were so thin we could hear everything. At 4:45 am someone left and slammed the door and rolled their suitcase past our room, waking me. I had no sooner dropped back to sleep than the fire alarm went off at 6 am. After much disorientation and ear splitting noise, we left our room (along with everyone else in the building) and congregated outside in the cold until the fire department came and said it was a "false alarm." I had tried to call the front desk when the alarm went off but no one answered (a recurring problem) Since we were now fully awake, my husband went to take a shower only to find the bathroom overrun with ants! He killed as many as he could and we both took quick showers and I went to the front desk to request a move (we didn't want to have our things exposed to bug spray) The desk manager offered us a room a few doors down and we accepted. It seemed ok, even darker than the first and obviously a handicap accessible room, but at least no ants! After spending the day out we came back to take an afternoon nap before dinner but heard banging and thumping from overhead. It was so bad that I finally went upstairs and discovered that the room right above us (and the two on either side) were in process of being remodeled! The construction guys apologized for the noise (not their fault) but I was furious at the desk manager who moved us to this room full well knowing that there was construction overhead. We decided that we needed to leave the hotel a day earlier....we weren't about to stay any longer than we had to in that room. I went to the front desk and spoke to another person who apologized and said she would have the manager call us (it is now more than 24 hours later and no call!) We spent the night in the room with neighbors on either side who thought it was ok to have their t.v.s on until 3:30 in the morning! Because of the way the TV's are mounted on the walls, sound conducts right through and it sounds like the t.v. is in your room! So between construction noise and noisy t.v.'s and the smoke alarm (which I suspect was triggered by something going on with the construction, although the hotel would never admit this!) we had no sleep for two nights! (p.s. it costs $15 per night to park on the property, which you pretty much have to do, but parking for building 600 is not secured....the first morning we found a man asleep in a car parked next to ours!) Wifi is free but spotty. It was fine in the first room and non existent in the second. You can be sure we won't be going to that hotel ever again!

    « Great for Families! »

We stayed with our 3 kids. The room w ith two queens and a little pull out sofa bed was great! The property itself is really pretty! not a requirment for my budget centered mind BUT a very nice plus! we got coupons for the kids so went to breakfast at restraunt right next door. all very clean always saw people cleaning so they are on top of it! Nice friendlt staff especially at the restraunt! I wish they didnt have to charge for parking BUT I guess a lot of properties are going that way. It is walking proximity to some cool Old Town San Diego sites.we had fun there with the kids. Check out the rock and gem store that has a very cool panning option. You pay a few bucks and they seed the pans of water and sand with little polished stones or shark teeth. The KIDS LOVED this!!! Also there is a candle store thats ells also bath supplies with FANTASTIC scents. My sister loved the coffee scented candle and I LOVE my lemon sugar body scrub! Check it out!

« Best Western Hacienda Review »

I loved my stay but was not happy with hidden fees that was added on to my receipt when I was checking out, which changed my mind about returning. I really love Old Town because of the vibe. Although I am from San Diego I often spend my time in Old Town. When I saw The Best Western Hacienda it was perfect. I loved the feel, my room which I stayed in, decorations and cleanliness. Overall everything was pleasant until I checked out and saw the receipt and there were fees I wasn't aware of. Needless to say I was very upset when I left and will not be coming back.

Stayed December 24-27, 2015, over Xmas holiday. Room was amazing, Room 211, parking was easy and very accessible to room. Elevators easy to use. Room was clean and very up to date with a mission style décor. Access to old town on back steps a breeze. Cleaning staff on the job and very efficient. Hotel front desk super helpful and always available. This is a perfect place to stay if you are visiting Old Town and want to see the sites... Great time... will return again.

« Great value, great staff and great locaiton - a great place to stay! »

I have been going to San Diego on business and pleasure for forty years. After trying places in La Jolla and all over San Diego, I have settled on this as the BEST place in town all round. The staff at the lounge, particularly Alicia and Hector, are excellent, as are Amber and Gabriela at the front desk. Try one of Hector's top-shelf margaritas. Breakfast is an excellent value, too.

« Best hotel in Old Town San Diego, CA »

If you want a place to stay in Old Town, you have to try the Best Western Hacienda Hotel. It's right in the heart of Old Town just steps away from great restaurants and shopping. The hop-on, hop-off trolley and the City trolley are just a few blocks from the hotel. The hotel is beautiful, the views of the harbor, airport and fireworks from Sea World are an added benefit and the staff is friendly and helpful. Give them a try!

Nice staff that was very helpful. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. I would stay here gain. This hotel is terraced on a hillside and the grounds were well groomed. Restaurant is pretty good but the breakfast is better ordered off the menu than the buffet.

« Great Get-away in Old Town, San Diego »

It was a cute place that is very convenient to the main attractions in Old Town (in San Diego). It was a rainy/cloudy night, so be aware that it is close to the airport, and we could hear the planes as they took off in the morning. It is a little loud, but overall was a great cute place.

    « Don't lose your phone here »

The location is great. The problem is the staff at the front desk. We tried squeezing San Diego into our trip to Southern California only to be finding ourselves at the mercy of the front desk instead of exploring Old Town San Diego. An iPhone went missing from our group. I asked the front desk if I could get back into the room and look for it as it was most likely there, the restaurant on location or the restroom. The woman at the front desk told me that she will have an employee search. She called the restaurant and I searched the restroom. No luck. I stayed in the lobby for a good while. Then she told me no phone was found in the room or the restaurant. After waiting a while longer in the lobby she said I could go up to the room to look. I did but nobody was there to let me back in. This whole time I can see that the phone was still on the property from tracing it with my phone. The rest of the family drove the vehicle off site to see if maybe the phone was possibly in the vehicle. No luck and the phone still was showing up on the property. After what seemed forever I saw a person walk into the lobby with our phone and give it to the front desk. I expected the front desk to get my attention right away. Nothing from them. I tried calling the phone and no one answered. Waiting for about fifteen minutes I gave up and called my mother to have them come in and claim the phone. As my wife came in and asked about the missing phone the front desk still didn't offer to bring it out. They asked if it was with a shattered screen. Of course not, it didn't even have a scratch on it. This is where the frustration really got heated. Just bring the phone out and stop playing games. If a person is trying to claim an iPhone just have them call it or better yet put the thumb on it to see if it opens up. The problem would have been solved in 10 seconds. I had my phone with me and missed a couple calls from people that were getting calls from the front desk saying the phone is missing. I didn't get those messages until after this was all done. Think about this, your trying to deal with a front desk getting a very important phone and need all attention in front of you, why would you take calls from someone back home. The screen on the phone the front desk had was shattered, but it was not shattered when we last had it. Never found out where it was found but most likely it dropped and shattered right there. Way too much time wasted over the lost phone. My mother says she talked with management and they backed the way they dealt with the issue. Please, managers of management, put some updated process of reuniting people with phones. These days a thumb to the phone or asking the guest waiting in the lobby to call the missing phone as soon as it shows up should be the way to deal with this. Had the person and her manager behind the desk gotten my attention right when the phone came in I would have never felt bad about the whole issue. We traveled a long way to enjoy San Diego only to have an experience that we would rather forget.

« We returned to the Hacienda again this year. »

We returned to the Hacienda again this year. It's central location makes it an easy access to all of San Diego. I want to thank Ann Marie at the front desk for choosing the perfect room for us on the courtyard.. It was larger than the one we had on our last visit. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The room was kept exceptionally clean. Hope to see you all again next year.

« Great place to stay. Highly recommend »

My wife and travel to San Diego about once a year. This is by far our favorite place to stay. First, it is clean and very well set up. It is like staying in a small Spanish village. I will say if you have trouble with walking or stairs tell them before arrival. They will work with you. We love the plazas, fountains and remote stairs that link the complex together. Next, one of the things I look forward to is having a Margarita in old town San Diego. There are several excellent places to get unbelievably good drinks there. The location of this hotel is perfect. No worries about driving or getting taxis. It is a safe place to walk. (Note that I am not suggesting getting falling down drunk, Just safer to not drink and drive ) Last, There is tons of stuff to do. Museums, shops, food, shows, art, the old town trolley and other tours. Old town is central to everything in San Diego and at the intersection of the two major freeways. The hotel will be happy to help you find activities but you can google and find so much. Also the red trolley and Amtrac station are a short 5 min walk. On our last trip we made an easy day trip to Disneyland on the Amtrac train. (I recommend that too! ) Hope you find this helpful and have a great trip!

I went to stay for my Birthday & the manager, Dean, made sure I had a lovely room on the Patio level. The hotel is located across from Heritage Park, Old Town State Park, & above the main street w/ all the shops & restaurants...... so there is no need to drive around Old Town. The trolley is also within walking distance..... There is so much to see in Old Town, that I never get tired of staying there..... From Old Town almost every-other San Diego attraction is less than 10 miles.

« Wish we could have stayed longer »

We stayed here for one night of our 3 night stay in San Diego. Due to other travel arrangements we arrived at the hotel at lunchtime which was well in advance of the normal check in time. We approached the check in desk and said we had a booking but thought it was too early to check in and asked if there was somewhere we could leave our bags and go off and enjoy the day and check in later on. The lady checked their system and our room was in fact ready and checked us in early with no fee. We were amazed! We got to the room and it was huge. There was a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. It was spotlessly clean and well serviced. We were given vouchers for a complimentary drink at the Tequila Factory bar which is attached to the hotel and breakfast vouchers too. The food there was excellent and very reasonably priced. tHe hotel is right in Old Town and only a 7 minute walk from the transportation area where you can catch the buses or the train which will take to to all the other areas of San Diego including Seaworld. The lady on the check in desk also researched this information for us and even looked up what number bus we needed to get. On our check out day we were transferring to another hotel,in a different part of San Diego and asked if it would be OK to store our bags until that evening, and this was done with no fuss at all. We returned to collect them at 6pm and the driver of their courtesy shuttle bus asked us if we needed a lift to the train or airport. We explained we were going to another hotel but he took us anyway with no charge. The whole experience of this hotel was outstanding and only wished we could have stayed there for our whole stay in San Diego and not for just one night. Highly recommended and would definitely stay again.

The hotel is really big! It's a beautiful hotel and is walking distance to restaurants and the shops. Got a complimentary margarita from the restaurant inside of the hotel and it was great! Only downside to it was that I could here the people on the top floor, overall the view from my room was nice and really enjoyed it with my husband. I would come back to the hotel.

    « 2 Adults 3 kids 1 Room »

First off we are a middle of the road traveling family meaning we don't need 5 star high end, but my wife does need clean and neat. This place is unique to say the least. It is smack dab in the middle of Old Town San Diego which is a Mexican experience. Mexican shops and restaurants galore. We stayed on level 3 of the hotel. Same level as the pool. Down is the lobby and up is the Tequila Factory restaurant. We stayed in room 305 with 2 double beds and an alcove with a small pull out. I am 6'3" 250lbs and I slept on the pull out. These little beds are the best kept secret. I made it seem like I was making a sacrifice but these beds were right under a ceiling fan and they were surprisingly comfortable. We had a great week at a great price. This hotel is a short drive to everything and a short walk that all that old town has to offer. Breakfast buffet every day has some nice offerings but it doesn't change so pace yourself each day to get a variety.

« "Amazing View of Old Town"!! and more! »

Had the pleasure of staying here Dec12-13 for a quick getaway and to meet up with family also staying at the hotel. I must say this was my and my husbands first stay here and we were just so happy with the accommodations and the view. We stayed on the 3rd floor overlooking San Diego in room 646. It was a beautiful cozy clean quiet room with fridge, microwave and coffee maker at our disposal. wifi was also excellent as I always carry my iPad for photo work. Sunset looked beautiful and all the lights were amazing. It is close to everything!! We visited Balboa Park, The Whaley House, Old Town and downtown San Diego as well as dining nearby at the Hobnob and visited the USS Midway. The hotel is so conveniently located to everything, my husband really appreciated the short drives and walks to our destinations visited. We most definitely will come again as there is still so much to see in San Diego on our list. Staff at The Tequila factory upstairs were amazing as well and all the men in our group stayed out late with the welcoming staff for some delicious drinks. All in all a winner on our list. Thank you Great Western we loved our stay!!

« Another great stay at The Hacienda »

So, this is our 4th stay at the Best Western Plus Hacienda in Old Town. We have enjoyed it each time. This time, however, started out a bit rough. I booked using a special rate deal, which really didn't seem so special, and when we arrived, we were given a room that did not meet our expectations. It was very small, had no balcony and was not what I was told it would be when I confirmed by phone. I had booked a larger suite but when I called, it was recommended that I go with the deal.... but that is a longer story. I called the office right away, but was told all rooms in that building were the same - I knew this was no correct, but let it go until the next day. The next day, I met Jesus, a supervisor at the Hacienda. He agreed that we were not treated fairly and not to the hotel standard. He gave me several options. Not only are we now staying in a great suite, but the price was lowered to where it should be. Thank you very much Jesus. We love it here and will continue to choose the Hacienda when we are in San Diego.

« Nice Hotel and Close to Everything »

The Best Western Hacienda Hotel has a great location with spacious rooms and some views of over San Diego. Overall look and feel is consistent with Old Town San Diego. Furniture, etc is a bit dated but fine unless you plan to spend a lot of time in the room. One thing could be substantially improved - the quality and availability of WIFI internet connection as coverage is lacking.

I was at a seminar that was located in the Hacienda Hotel. It was very nice, convenient and easy. I got a complimentary drink upon arrival, and had an enjoyable stay. « Nice Hotel but Poor Customer Service »

I have written almost 150 reviews on Trip Advisor ? almost all of which were rated ?Very Good? or ?Excellent?. I am not a chronic complainer, but this is one of my rare negative reviews. I stayed at the Best Western Hacienda Old Town for 2 nights on November 8th and 9th. My stay started out very positive, but ended on a negative note. First, the positives: It's a great location is the heart of Old Town San Diego. The hotel has a great restaurant on site ? Old Town Tequila Factory ? which I rated favorably. Dozens of other restaurants and shops are within a short walk. The Old Town Transit Center is also a few blocks away. There, you can hop on the Trolley to go to Downtown, Qualcomm Stadium and the Mission Valley shopping malls. The negatives: This location charges for parking -- $15 per day ($10 for AAA members). This is also one of the few Best Westerns which doesn't offer a free breakfast (AAA members get a 25% discount off their breakfast buffet). My biggest complaint is that I didn't receive any housekeeping service on Monday. When I complained to the Front Desk on Tuesday, they made matters worse. I was traveling on vacation and wanted to sleep later on Monday morning, so I put out my "Do Not Disturb" sign. I removed the DND sign at 10am Monday when I left for the day. I returned to my room after the football game at 10:30pm to discover that my room was never cleaned. When I mentioned this Tuesday morning, the Front Desk clerk turned the problem around and basically said that it was MY fault that my room wasn't cleaned. I should have called Housekeeping to request service. I have worked in a hotel for 25 years, so I know that's not the way it works. If there is a DND on the door in the morning, Housekeeping returns after lunch to recheck the room. Clearly, this wasn't done. I am not the type of guest who expects a free stay for any minor problem, but I do think it would be appropriate to receive some compensation for my inconvenience of returning to a dirty room. The price I paid for the room includes the cost of providing housekeeping services. If the hotel fails to provide a promised service, they should not charge for it. I have requested that the hotel issue me a refund for the $20 parking fees ? which would be 10% discount off my total bill. I think that this would be fair and appropriate amount for returning to a dirty room. The Front Desk Manager has admitted that they made a mistake, but the hotel is refusing to issue a refund or any form of compensation for my inconvenience. In light of this poor customer service, I have given the hotel a ?Poor? rating.

I would recommend this hotel for its distant to so many activities and sites in Old Town. Also it is across the street from the Trolley Touring system, which is convenient. Beautiful hotel tucked into an even more beautiful setting. Everything within walking distance.

« Beautiful views and outdoor experience »

Brings your hotel experience to the outdoors--for a visitor like myself, I loved the adventurous design where you get to walk around the hacienda and approach the door as if from a private balcony. The views inspire you to get out and walk around old town, or visit the pool by exploring up and down fancy outdoor staircases and around colorful balconies!! It took the ordinary and made it extraordinary! I booked a second night there for my business trip!

« Friendly but needs upgrade »

Stayed for a long weekend conference. Friendly staff-meals were free through a voucher system. Unfortunately the breakfast buffet was a bit sloppy and many items were cold. The dinners are serviceable, plenty of better Mexican options in Old Town. Good location and friendly shuttle service. The room was large-but a little tired. Beds are comfortable. Workout facility is run down--on machine wasn't working and equipment is dated. If you are on a budget and need to be in Old Town, this place will work for you.

« Great hotel, great location, hope to return! »

I initially booked into the new Hilton Garden Inn Old Town though Expedia. Several weeks after I made my booking, Expedia contacted me to say that the opening date of my original hotel was being delayed, and that they had changed by booking to a comparable hotel, the Best Western Plus Hacienda Old Town. I was a little disappointed, as I had been looking forward to staying at a brand new, modern hotel, and the Hacienda looked pretty old. There were also some unfavourable reviews regarding noise and internet issues. However, on checking in, I just fell in love with the place. It may be older, but the grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The grounds are so charming, I enjoyed just walking around them and soaking up the views of they offer. Inside the room, the furnishings were in keeping with the building, and I found it to be well equipped, with two big very comfortable beds, a lounge, a microwave, fridge and everything I needed for my stay. There were a couple of maintenance issues such as a tap not working and something else, and the internet not initially working, and every time I called the front desk, the maintenance man, who was great, was up and had the issue fixed in minutes. As for the rest of the stay, my internet was pretty much perfect, I had no issues at all. With regards to noise, I found the hotel really quiet. The exception to this was on my last night, when the rich, middle-aged, white Americans and Canadians decided to have a party in their room, which was next to mine, and stand on the balcony, right outside the door by my bed and yell and whoop loudly. I called reception, and they said they would send maintenance up. It did take a second call and me (half-jokingly) telling them if they didn't tell them to quieten down, I would go run my South London mouth up on them and shut them up, which wouldn't be pretty (which did seem to amuse the receptionist!), and soon after that, things suddenly went quiet! I am normally very independent, but as the main reason I was in San Diego was actually for surgery, I did need to ask for assistance from hotel staff at times. Every member of staff I encountered was helpful, professional and friendly - they were brilliant. My only non-positive comment would be that the food at the Tequila Factory, the restaurant above the hotel, which will provide room service, was not very nice - definitely eat somewhere else, there are lots to choose from with a few-hundred metre radius. As for the location, I was so glad I chose the Old Town. Due to the surgery, I couldn't drive, so was reliant on public transit/taxi/uber. There is plenty to eat in the Old Town, so that was easy. The trolley was only a few minutes from the hotel, which was cheap and got me to most of the places I needed to go (my surgeon, downtown, the mall), and as nothing was too far, taxi/uber was fairly cheap. There was even more food and a big Target about a 2km walk, so did that a bit to burn off the burritos! Unfortunately, whilst I stayed on an extra four nights in San Diego, the Hacienda was fully booked, so I have now moved to the Hilton Garden Inn, where I was originally meant to stay, for which I'll also write a review. I would love to come back to San Diego for a holiday, as it is such a beautiful city, and I would like to fully experience it with post-operative restrictions! I would definitely stay at the Hacienda again, it by far exceeded my expectations, and I really enjoyed my stay there, it was the perfect place to recover. Expedia changing my booking was a blessing in disguise. Thanks to all the staff who make it such a great hotel :)

    « needs an update »

This hotel has very nice views and good service. The rooms need an update though and the food at the Tequila Factory was not good at all. I tried both a la carte breakfast and the buffet. I arrived with two suitcases and had to carry them several flights of stairs.

« Hotel in the Middle of Old Town San Diego, CA »

Very good location. It's in the middle of Old Town San Diego. Although it's in a very picturesque location, it's not adequate for people with disabilities since the hotel consists of several buildings in different levels and some accommodations cannot be reach with the elevator. One needs to carry his/her own luggage upstairs.

« Amazing location and great hotel »

We were in San Diego for our sons graduation from MCRD. Old Town was awesome. So much to do in the area and the hotel had a beautiful view, friendly staff, room was nice and comfortable and the Old Tequila Factory restaurant at the hotel had awesome food. Room service was great. All in all, it was a great experience.

    « Best Western [Minus] »

View was great, but the bed was uncomfortable and the bath tub was in very poor condition. We expected much better for the price we payed. We stayed here many years ago and were looking forward to staying in Old Town again. The Tequila Factory had very good food drinks.

« SERVICE and ACCOMMODATIONS, ETC »

the check-in/checkout process was very pleasant. food at the restaurant was a let-down-- so was the welcome drink. Parking garage NOT ADEQUATE --too tight between spaces and difficult to USE --motorcycle club occupied 1 space for each motorcycle made it very difficult for CAR parking. NO rolling cart available to take luggage from room to the garage--we are both over 80--my companion walks with a cane and ground flloor room not avail (asked for in advance)ROOM WAS VERY COMFORTABLE and well MAINTAINED. VIEW from the roof of our bldg. was spectacular and for that reason --we would probably stay here again

    « Great to Stay »

The people were all so nice. The room was great. Very clean and big. I would stay there again when I go back to San Diego. We had a great view from our room. A nice chair outside to see the view. Plenty of space for you luggage. The best part was how nice and quiet it was.

    « No return business »

My initial review is dated 1/27/15. As January approaches and I will in 1/16 be spending 2 full weeks in San Diego, I need to put my $$ where my mouth is and I will not give this property my business Last January I asked for good wifi--my initial room not only didn't have wifi but the Ethernet wouldn't work if the tv was on. I left my computer case in the initial room and forgot about it until the night I was packing to leave. I was there for 7 nights and no staff CARED enough to give me my case back/the woman who I approached as I was about to leave made me go back to my room to produce my ID to GET MY CASE despite the fact she CHECKED ME IN! I didn't feel welcomed, housekeeping skipped my room twice, I feel this property is resting on location. I manage a very high volume NON-CHAIN restaurant in a solid and quickly emerging major city (Columbus, OH)....I KNOW what SERVICE IS...........I get away only so often and it breaks my heart to have to tell this property NO. NO. You do NOT get my return business this year. THIS year I am in Old Town for a full 2 weeks and splitting that between 2 other properties. Ryan DID respond to my initial post and told me to contact him, etc. But never gave an email or a number and there is no way to email through the website. If the managemet or owners really CARED it wouldn't be this difficult This property has a dedicated maintenance crew. A nasty front desk staff (SEE VERY CURRENT REVIEWS, SEE AMBER) and is very arrogant. I AM PUTTING MY $$$ WHERE MY MOUTH IS. I WILL NOT STAY HERE AGAIN.

« Dia de los Muertos in Old Town »

I had a great experience on all fronts. I used the shuttle to go to the airport, transit center, and water front. Freddy, one of the shuttle drivers, was especially helpful. The service at the front desk was very good, both on the phone and in person. My room was clean and attractive. I was in building 5 on the second floor, above the pool area. I had a little balcony with some view. Microwave, coffee maker, and refrig. AAA discount. One block from the heart of Old Town and celebration of Day of the Dead. I will go back!

    « Wedding Group Party »

Our niece booked a group of rooms for family and friends from out of town to stay near the site of her wedding. Doing so allowed us all to spend lots of great time together. The hotel is right across the street from Old Town where there are shops and museums and a lot of history. The hotel itself is very nicely laid out in multi-level buildings, and the grounds are beautiful. There are many areas where friends and family can gather, enjoy barbecuing and spending good time together without worrying about taking up seats in the restaurant or bothering anyone. This is a beautiful hotel and lots to offer guests!

« Average room, convenient location, service can improve »

The Hacienda is located 10 minutes walk from the Trolley (tram) station and it's in the middle of town which was convenient. It is within walking distance to most of the attractions in old town and lot so nice restaurants around it. The hotel was big divided into different blocks so we got the highest one on the hill (which gave us amazing view on the corridor), which meant we had to use 3 lifts to get to it (which was a bit annoying at times coz the lifts were not very fast). The room was a bit dated and it had some basic amenities. It also had a microwave which was nice. Do bring lotion and shower gel if you are going as they only provided soap and shampoo. It was well cleaned each day so that was nice. In terms of service, they were generally helpful but we happened to check in when another client was having a melt down at the counter and the staff weren't super helpful to them. We asked about the old town trolley tour info at the concierge and the staff said they would help us but when we got there in the evening another staff said they had nothing to do with the tour so we had to do it ourselves (which weren't difficult but would be nice to have consistency). They offered a shuttle from hotel to airport which was nice and efficient. The complimentary breakfast was at the tequila factory within the hotel, the food was disappointing and service was just ok. On the positive side, the view on the outdoor patio was nice. The hotel gave us some free margarita coupons which we went there to redeem but didn't feel totally welcomed (as we didn't order anything coz we thought it was just a free gesture with not other obligations). Overall, it was an okay stay.

« Nice Rooms, Good Location, HORRIBLE Service »

I came to San Diego for both personal and business reasons. The shuttle service to/from the airport was disastrous. After waiting 75 minutes for the shuttle to arrive to airport (after calling the hotel twice) I was finally told to take a cab, the expense to be reimbursed by the hotel. Upon checking -in, only the fare, not the tax & tip, were reimbursed. I was also "greeted" by a snarky front desk clerk named Amber, who proceeded to then check me in to a room that was already occupied. Of course I discovered the room was occupied only after I lugged my suitcase up three flights of stairs. My keys never seemed to work throughout my stay, so I was left having them rekeyed two addition times. I had the pleasure of interacting with Amber throughout my stay, who's attitude remained full of attitude. Lastly, my bill was charged incorrectly, adding more frustration to the experience. If you're willing to put up with snotty desk clerks and long waits, this is the place for you.

    « A Wonderful Surprise! »

Our Jamboleer group stayed here over the weekend of Oct. 23-25, 2015. I've been to Old Town San Diego many times but somehow I never knew about the Hacienda Old Town Hotel. It is a very large complex of hotel rooms. The hotel rooms are roomy and comfortable. We also enjoyed the buffet breakfast, the restaurant, and the bar. A very nice find. We will be back!

    « Love this hotel! »

The hotel is in walking distance of Old Town and has the very best views!! Bed was very comfortable and room was very clean. Hotel staff was very nice! We have stayed here several times and just love it!

« Great Location, Some Amenities Lacking »

This hotel is really well situated near Old Town and is easy to access from both freeways. Property is really spread out, but interesting. Lots of stairs. Biggest problem was lack of a free breakfast, which I thought was a brand standard with Best Western.

    4
    « Good Location »

Love the location, close to good restaurants and everything else we wanted to do in San Diego. Hotel was clean, room very spacious. Checking in was a little bit of a hassle due to a big group being showing up at the same time, but the desk staff did a good job. Would stay there again.

    « excellent location »

Beautiful property in excellent location for Old Town. We had a very pleasant stay. We arrived very late and were disappointed with our small room as I'd reserved a king bed and sofa room. However, the manager upgraded us to a suite at the same rate so we loved our roomy accommmodations. It was quiet even though there were lots of families. Only disappointment, I could not use my Samsung tablet to connect to internet but my husbands smart phone worked fine. Location of elevators was a little confusing but we figured it out. All in all a great stay

    « Pleasant overnight stay »

We were picked up at the airport within 15 minutes of calling for the hotel shuttle. We were given a room on the Plaza level, close to the fitness room and pool. As AAA members we got a 25% discount on the buffet breakfast - a nice selection of hot and cold items including make your own waffles and Mexican dishes. They gave us coupons for a free welcome drink in the bar. The room was clean with comfortable beds and good AC. An enjoyable stay - would definitely stay there again.

« My Home Away From Home »

I love this place! I have so much peace while staying here. So close to everything I want to do and eat! Not to mention the free breakfast and dinner! If you stay anywhere else you have wasted your funds and missed out on a great stay!

« Good location, poor set up. »

We stayed here because it was close to Old Town and the trolley station. For that reason, the stay worked out. Unfortunately, the rest of the visit left a lot to be desired. To start, they were having some type of convention. The lobby was jam packed with people trying to check in and there were only two people behind the counter. The process took over 30 minutes. My experience with business travel is that there is always a separate check in for large groups. Considering we were there for just one night, waiting that long just to check in was unacceptable. The property itself is nice, but expansive. We were in building six which required us to walk and take three different slow elevators just to get to our room. Again, too much wasted time and hardly accessible for someone less mobile. The room was very nice and spacious, but based on the overall experience, we would look for something else next time.

    « great location »

This property is in a great location not only for access to Old Town and the surrounding area but it is an easy drive to Balboa Park and the Southport area. There is the Tequila Factory restaurant on site and a lot of other places to eat within easy walking distance. While it does cost to park onsite, I thought it was a good deal because parking is a big pain in the area especially on the weekends. There are several buildings that the rooms are in and lots of stairs too. The property was very clean and well kept. We stayed in one of the king suites which was great for when our daughter dropped by from school. I'd love to stay here agin on our next trip to San Diego

« A nice place to visit but... »

The rooms are very nice and comfortable cannot fault them for the overall quality. This is one of the only Best Westerns that we have had to pay for parking and $15.00 a day seems a bit high. We have stayed here twice in the past 10 months. The internet has been poor both times. This time the signal appeared to be strong but the actual connection was very poor. This occurred on multiple devices. We did not report it as I didn't think they could do anything about it. Also seems odd that breakfast is not offered to every customer. When we checked in we were told it was not part of our reservation. The first time we stayed there it was and we didn't think to check on it we just assumed it was. The staff member did give us vouchers anyway but would not have if we did not ask. We will probably try a different Best Western in the San Diego area next time we visit.

    5
    « Great Experience »

We loved this hotel. It is very clean and the staff is very friendly! It is in walking distance to many Old Town stores and restaurants. I would not suggest the hotel restaurant for breakfast. Parking is super, and for Old Town that is rare

    « MCRD graduation/vacation »

This hotel is located near MCRD and allowed our family to visit the San Diego area without having to rent a car. We were shuttled to and from the airport, MCRD, and the USS Midway. We were close to the tourist trolley, amtrak, the trolley lines so traveling around San Diego was easy. We did not notice any airplane noise with being so close to the airport. This hotel made up of several buildings and is built into the side of a hill. The view from our room was beautiful!! Enjoy.

« Beautiful, Authentic looking Hotel. »

The hotel is huge and there are tons of stairs. The exterior is so pretty and the location is perfect if you want that laid back old town experience. The pool is small but nice. The rooms are a little dated. but very clean and comfortable.

    « Great service & comfortable »

The hotel was comfortable and clean. My partner and I were attending a wedding at Heritage Park. I was very thankful for the helpful staff, comfortable bed, and strong air conditioner. On the morning we checked out, a staff person ran out to the parking garage to give me my cell phone. I had apparently dropped it in one of the elevators on the way to the lobby. I was so thankful! We were already late for the airport.

« Destination is Nicer than the Hotel »

Going to Old Town San Diego is so much fun and worth it. The reason that I didn't give this Best Western a better rating is because I've stayed at much nicer ones and there is an expectation on the "Plus"....but I did waffle between Aver. and Very Good. I think you can't go wrong for the location, but with that being said, the hotel is built on a hill and if you're looking for convenience in parking...be advised....yes, there's parking for an extra $15 and if the lot is full, well, be prepared to do street parking on a very steep hill and do some walking. There is valet parking for more $, but after the price of the room, I didn't want to add to my bill. I didn't really mind the street parking b/c I ended up being lucky to be closer to the upper entrance...and, I'm fit and up for a little exercise, but if you're not, be prepared for that! Speaking of hills, being in the very upper part of the hotel there's a lot of outside stairs (that were beautiful in the setting), and there is a elevator, but can be a bit confusing finding your way by walking back down to the lobby. The entire hotel is broken up into different buildings, so I really don't know what the bottom part is like, but the upper blding room seemed nice when first walking in - they did a good job in decor, but to be honest (and why I didn't give it a better rating) it was pretty shabby - bathroom especially and the visual made it feel not so clean (I was one step away from laying down towels to make a pathway) and for $246.21 for a night there, I did expect a little better. I do realize it's in a prime location and that must be the rub! The lobby was very nice and I can't speak to the rooms lower down, but in peanut heaven, I think they need an upgrade! The morning coffee in the lobby wasn't anything special - it's the standard fare - fake creamers & no raw sugar packets! It's such a great location...close to Coronado Island and especially to the airport if you have an early flight! It was perfect after a week at family wedding to end up there the day before flying out, was perfect! So, maybe it was "very good", but I'm still giving it an average rating for the price!

    « Lottsa Stairs »

My room was on the top tier, the furthest away from the entrance. Three different elevators or about 8 flights of stairs. The hotel is on the side of a hill with many tiers that I suspect have been added onto many times. The room was dated, dark and needed upgrading. After two nites the AC went on the fritz. The room was on back of the hotel away from the noise from the freeway. All rooms have an outside entrance. The patio at the end of the corridor overlooking the airport and bay as well as the freeway was a pleasant place to sit and have a glass of wine and watch the sunset. The hot water was not available in the evenings. They had made an attempt to upgrade the bathroom, but forgot to change the toilet. Considering that there is a water shortage in CA and most new toilets use a third of the water of the existing toilet it would seem to me that it would have been prudent to make the change. They advertise free Wifi but I could not get it to work on three of the four nites. I would not recommend this hotel

    « Lovely »

We stayed in the deluxe 2 x queen bed room which was in the block adjacent to the reception area. It was a lovely spacious room, and had easy access from the parking area. Walking up the hill to the restaurant required some effort but was worth it; the breakfast was fantastic and dinner was also great with lovely views and excellent margaritas. The Old Town area is very appealing and has very easy access to the CBD and Balboa Park and zoo. The pool was lovely on a hot night.

    « Clean and comfy »

There is a lot of construction going on in the streets. If you come during the day I am sure it will be a pain in the butt to get in and out. We checked in around 10pm although the conatru tion workers were gone the equipment was parked in the streets and walking around to get to the hotel restaurant was treterous, we had to walk over plywood, and other construction stuff. Other than that the lady that checked us in was very accommodating she gave us a room with a view of old town. She also took the time to answer my questions without making me feel like I was wasting her time. Our room came with 2 complimentary drinks at the hotel restaurant! We were elated! (See review of restuarant) We drove to our room and parking was almost full but we managed to find a spot outside the structure. We took the elevator up to the room it was clean, the beds looked comfy, and we turned on the air conditioner and within a few minutes the room cooled down and we were comfortable. We did not have issues with noise, or Anything we slept through the night. In the morning i had to leave for a meeting but I could see that the hotel was just a few streets from old town!!!!!!! I wish I could have stayed longer but it was a biz trip. I will difinetly be coming back soon! Hopefully after all the construction is completed.

« Old world flavor and central location. »

We really enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Hacienda in San Diego. The Hotel has that old world flavor of the rich Mexican heritage in that area. Located in Old Town it is the first city developed in San Diego. We were walking distance to the famous Old Town, where you took a step back in time as things were during the 1800's. San Diego's Trolley Tour is also a block away and we toured 11 different sights. Plus a great tour of the Midway Battleship. Lots of restaurants and shops. Only negative was that our room was on the first floor near the street side, where EVERY morning a loud garbage truck roared through plus other cars that parked there were noisy. Otherwise we would go back in a minute, love San Diego, but next time will ask for a room away from the noise of the street.

« Great location, lots of stairs »

I stayed at this hotel on two separate occasions in September. It's a fairly large hotel spread over many levels on the side of a hill above Old Town. The first time my room was accessible by elevator. However, the second time I had to lug a 50-pound suitcase up & down about 20 stairs, did not enjoy that. The rooms are older but very roomy, clean & comfortable. The grounds are well maintained & very pretty with all the flowers & little courtyards. The front desk staff was very courteous & helpful, although a little slow. And I enjoyed my meals at Tequila Kitchen at the top of the hotel - great view! The big draw for this hotel is the location, which is ideal. Old Town is a nice part of the city for walking & sightseeing. And it's so easy to get to other areas of San Diego since the trolley stop is only a block away. Overall I enjoyed my stay & would recommend this hotel.

« OK if you like stairs. .. »

This hotel is very attractive on the outside. Nice location right in Old Town, walking distance to everything. Good value. HOWEVER, be prepared for LOTS of stairs. Hotal sits on a hillside with many levels of buildings. Elevators only reach certain levels. I had trouble getting my luggage up and down the stairs. Walking to old town involves 4 flights, so be ready to do some climbing. .. I finally requested a room with elevator access. Then the elevator broke. Inside the rooms are a bit worn, decor is very dark. Not sure if it's out of date or meant to look like old hacienda style. Either way, not very attractive. Just OK hotel, but a good value overall.

« Disappointing compared to prior stays »

The grounds, at this hotel, are quite beautiful. I have stayed here, in the past, because of its location and complimentary airport shuttle. Previously, the shuttle was also offered for other tourist locations, which it is no longer available other than the airport, cruise port and railway station. Also, the complimentary breakfast is no longer available either (but, checked the food quality and it appeared to be as bad as it was the last time I was here, so decided NOT to pay for that quality of food). Shuttle driver was very courteous, however, check-in person was not very friendly. Seemed to be pre-occupied. After arriving in my room and trying to login to wifi, I realized that I was not given the password at registration for this function. I noticed a large stain at the entry to my room. I have supplied a photo of it with an 8 1/2 x 11 book next to it to indicate its size. As soon as I was settled, I went back to the front desk to inquire about the password. A gentleman helped me this time and was very friendly and quickly gave me the information. It was probably the location of the room, but it was extremely noisy most of the night. Although the location is very convenient, it is doubtful that I will choose the Hacienda for my next San Diego visit.

    « A few issues »

We've stayed in this hotel many times before and never had any issues. We love the location and convenience to the many restaurants/bars and shopping. This trip we did have an issue with our air conditioning, which they moved us to another room, though it was the middle of the night and we had to move a baby! There was a slight issue with ants in the bathroom and a cock roach, but I understand that is hard to control with all the vegetation on the property. The second room we were moved to was in the 600 building and was an older room and could stand to be updated.

    5
« Stairs, stairs, and more stairs »

The elevators and slow and stuffy, so we found the stairs much more convenient. However, our room was in the 600 building at the back and top of the hill. Lots of stairs! Awesome location! We didn't use our car for most of this trip. It was so nice to walk around to the local shops and restaurants and find things to look at and do. We also loved that the hotel provides a courtesy shuttle to the cruise terminal and cheap parking! Taxi from cruise terminal back to hotel was only $17, so we went this route on our return instead of waiting for the hotel to dispatch a shuttle for us. Room was much bigger than we expected so that was a nice bonus. However, train sounds at some point in the night disturbed my husband though I never even heard it.

    « Disappointed »

My family and I stayed almost exclusively in Best Westerns on our three week road trip in 2013, and had nothing but wonderful things to say about the chain. However, my resent stay in the Best Western Plus Hacienda in San Diego changed that. I loved the vintage Spanish feel of the grounds, but the room was a throw back to the 70's, and not in a good way. Peeling paint, cracked cocking in bathroom, and the dingy dated sofa all added the the poor impression. And then there was the smell. At first I thought it was just because the room had been closed up for awhile, however it never went away. We ended up going to Target to get a plug in air freshener to mask it. We are home now and the smell attached to us!! My 12 year old daughter lierally emptied everything from her suit case into the dirty laundry hamper to be rewashed, even though many of the items the were never worn!

« Good this time usually great »

Stayed for 20 days this last trip and while the people were as nice as always the Old town area and hotel had challenges this time. The roads in Old Town are being worked on and access was tough at times. Repairs to the buildings and road work made it louder during the day than normal. For the first time I to call in for problems with a drain line leaking into the parking garage and the ice machine in my building was broken for the whole 20 day stay. Staff is always very welcoming and the grounds looked good. When renovations are complete and road work is done I will be back for sure.

Best Western PLUS Hacienda Hotel Old Town is the place I stay when I'm in Old Town San Diego. I really like the rooms, grounds, facilities, and the staff is very friendly. I've stayed here 6 times in the past 8 years and it's consistently a great place to rest your head.

« This is my kind of property »

This is my kind of place. It's a multi-level resort built up the hill-side with a plateau on the third level that leads to the pool and hottub. Audrey who checked me in was brilliant and really set the tone for the stay. She gave me vouchers for breakfast and for a welcome drink at the Tequila Factory...who doesn't love a complementary Margarita. My room 640 was pretty nice. It was all the way up, close to 200 steps for sure. I think you could take elevators if you wanted to but I didn't I liked the stairs. My room was great, and clean, the airconditioner made a few odd sounds during the night but nothing to scary. I had room service for breakfast instead of going to the restaurant, just to check it out. It showed up hot and at the time I requested so that was awesome. Parking was easy and I think only $10 so that's good. There was wifi but I didn't use it so can't tell you anything about it. It's an easy walk into the centre of old town. I would stay here again for sure. I'm only not giving this excellent because of the few sounds from the air conditioner and that's just me being petty. It really was Very Good +

Basic room, clean , close to restaurants ..good location..Not convenient for anyone who is handicapped.too many stairs to get around...Breakfast choices were not very appealing..we did not eat any other meals at the hotel..Nice outside pool but not very big for size of hotel.

« Old Town is a fun place to go! »

We stayed at the Best Western Hacienda on October 3 and we were very happy with our stay. The room was a lot cheaper then something down on the water (by more then $100) and it was a beautiful property. We were on the Plaza level and there were beautiful plants, trees, shrubs and the grounds were extremely well kept. Our room had a lot of windows which we loved and was very clean and nice. There was a small frig and a microwave. It's right in Old Town, so you can just walk to the shops and restaurants. We also spent some time at the pool which was very nice and heated with a great view. We can't wait to go back and stay here again.

    « Awesome location! »

We were in a King Mini-Suite. It was a bit small but had everything we needed. This hotel is right in the middle of Old Town which was perfect for our mini vacation. The restaurant had a beautiful view as did the pool area. I would stay in this hotel again without a doubt.

The Hacienda is not a beautiful hotel over looking San Diego, it is relaxing and friendly. It is centrally located with easy access public transportation. The pool and hot tub are very relaxing in the cool San Diego night air. I highly recommend this property if you ever come to San Diego.

I have always associated Best Western with other properties like Comfort Suites and Motel 6, but recent stays at Best Western Plus properties are changing my view quickly. The Hacienda property is large but the layout makes it feel smaller and quaint. The location is excellent as you can just walk right into the heart of Old Town San Diego. The room is appropriately decorated and has everything you need for a short or long stay. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was quite. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to stay in the San Diego area.

Great location, hillside setting. A village feel, accessibility could be an issue. Nice sized well appointed room, some dampness issues. So, it is a cool scattering of buildings, centered around a long rambling courtyard, with lots of stairs, a hodgepodge. Our room was directly outside the pool gate, which was a plus as it was a hot weekend. We had a great view of the bay, the sunset and the Hecho en Mexico event that we were attending there at the hotel. The only drawback for us was that some things left on the floor came up damp. Never could find the source of the problem as we were rarely in the room. Overall, great place for location, quick and easy access to the freeways, Old Town itself and the airport. Staff was super friendly, very accommodating and attentive.
