The BEST WESTERN Royal Beach Hotel. . . the clue's in the name! Regal style and comfort by the sea is on offer here, with Portsmouth's attractive coastal character adding to the appeal! On Southsea's promenade, we promise true 'home from home' customer care, and we'll go out of our way to make sure you don't have to! For example, reception is open 24 hours, with a lift to all floors and free porterage and parking is available. Our bedrooms are modern yet comfortable, with complimentary tea/coffee facilities, satellite television, a direct dial telephone and Internet connection. But long before you're enjoying the modern conveniences of our accommodation, you can enjoy the finest fare in the restaurant (which, by the way, serves an excellent full English breakfast too). A bottle of fine wine will make the perfect nightcap, and we have two bars and a residents lounge to enjoy it in! For outings, Portsmouth's historic dockyard, Clarence Pier and funfair and a canoe lake with model village are all nearby for family fun.

    « Line Dance Weekend »

A weekend Line dance Break, with I O W tours. A very nice hotel well placed for exploring the attractions of Portsmouth, we were fortunate the Victorian Market was on at the Dock yard, the entrance fee was well worth the money.

    « Past it's best »

With a small group of friends we regularly go away for a weekend. In this case, to Portsmouth - shopping at Gunwharf Quays for the ladies, Mary Rose and the Spinnaker Tower for the men. The accommodation this time was at the Best Western Royal Beach Hotel, which is directly on the seafront opposite the pier. Not strictly necessary in November but still. The hotel advertises that it has parking, but not that it is a)not accessible from the front of the hotel and b)limited in the extreme. It turned out that we'd booked a weekend with the worst weather in years (howling gales, torrential rain) and where the the hotel had not one, not two, but three large groups staying. This resulted in scouring the surrounding streets for available on street parking then sprinting to the hotel in the aforementioned rain and wind. Not a great start. The entire place is decorated in a sort of dark beige and frankly could do with an update. The rooms are a good size with a patterned beige wallpaper. The bathroom, also a good size looked to have been renovated fairly recently - polished (beige) limestone tiles, all very clean and smart. We ate elsewhere so I can't comment on the restaurant but at breakfast time the whole restaurant was taken up with the three big groups, none of whom showed any inclination to get up and go despite having finished. We were a party of seven and wanted to sit together. We were directed to the bar where there were a number of small round tables for two but given no assistance to rearrange anything so we could sit together. The same applied to another couple of family groups - just left to sort themselves out as best they could. The food covered all the required options for both continental and cooked breakfasts, although pastries were in short supply. I've seen a review from a member of one of the groups there the same weekend. They apparently had a great time, so I'd suggest if you must stay here, go in a big group, the staff will look after you. On your own, or a small group, probably not. I'd also arrive early if you want to park here, they only have a few (small) spaces that I'm told are awkward to get into because of restricted space and pillars. On street parking in the area is mostly residents bays or metered along the seafront, so far from ideal. Oh, and they forgot to order our Sunday paper.......

    « Old and tired. »

Pleasant elderly staff who know theirjob, but the dining and the parking, and the general tawdriness! Evening meal- eat in the bar, packet sauces, no cruets with reheated food, industrial daily menu,(Ham, egg, and chips type: chicken with sauce roast pork and pots) The strange thing was the high table and very low seats! Cushions were available, I had the last two, as even the staff admit to continual requests. Great location, but, apart from the location, I would not stay there, and came home.

    « Dirty Dancing »

Had an overnight stay, while visiting the theatre and all of the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely stay there again and recommend this hotel to friends and family. Could do with a bigger carpark as there is only a handful so you need to get there early.

    « I O W TOURS LINE DANCE WEEKEND »

Just left after a fantastic weekend away. Stayed here last year and returned this year for a great line dance weekend organised through I O W tours. Booked this weekend with our line dancing group. Hotel very nice. Helpful friendly staff, excellent food and plenty of choice. They can cater for special diets. Dinning was buffet style great so you can choose what you want. They are open to the public and have menus for waitress service reasonable prices. Room was very comfortable and although single had a double room. Room radiator wasn't working, maintenance man looked at it but said he wasn't a plumber. I had a convector heater brought up to my room this kept my room cosy. Lovely towel radiator in bathroom, nice warm towels when you step out of shower or bath. Room is well equipped hair dryer in bathroom, hostess tray to make tea and coffee and biscuits left. In the wardrobe iron and ironing board. Hotel do offer a laundry service if needed. A lot of the hotel has been refurbished still a few areas to be done but of course this does all take time. Hotel is situated on the seafront on st Helens promenade. Right opposite the pier which looks like it is currently being refurbished. Nice walks along the prom and not too far from the shops in the town. All round lovely hotel and great weekend ??

    « Old but good! »

The hotel is old fashioned and rooms not modernly decorated. Our room did have some wall paper peeling off the wall. However it was large and very clean, including the bathroom. The bed was massive and comfortable! The staff were very helpful and attentive. The food we had for dinner and breakfast was very good and served promptly. The hotel was just a short walk to a small shopping area or £2 on a 10 minute bus journey to the other side with many more shops, the old town of Portsmouth and HMS Naval bases. Would definitely recommend if visiting Portsmouth and Southsea.

    « Now has wi-fi »

On my last visit there was no wi-fi in the room this time around no problem. The breakfast menu was very good and the staff attentive. My room looked over the car park but was very quiet and well furnished.

« A pleasant stay in this old hotel »

We had a lovely room with sea view. The room was spacious and clean. It is not our first visit there but each time we had a relaxing stay. The staff very welcoming. We had meals in the restaurant which served good food. Will be staying there again in the future.

    « beautiful »

right on the gorgeous sea front. i have been here many times for many things including weddings, xmas meals and new years parties all of which were superb. The food is always of a brilliant standard, rooms kept clean and tidy and staff there on hand ready to help.

    « Victorian Splendour »

Whilst this hotel is old, it has been renovated and modernised several times, but it still retains a feeling of Victorian space and quality. The bar, reception and public areas are very pleasant and comfortable. Our room was at the back of the hotel, it was very clean and up to date with an excellent and well equipped bathroom. It had a shower, hair dryer etc., and plenty of towels; you may have to take your own shampoo, but otherwise everything was catered for. Tea and coffee making facilities were available, plenty of storage space; and surprise! surprise! an iron and ironing board. The food in the bar was so good that we never made it to the restaurant. The first night we had pie and mash with gravy, delicious, and the second night fish and chips with an excellent tartar sauce. In each case it was less than £10 per head. Each morning we had the full English breakfast which included just about everything we could think of. We were there on a very busy week-end, weddings and various events were going on, so the hotel was full, this was not a problem the staff coped very well. The only difficulty was parking, even the street parking was scarce. Eventually the receptionist shoe-horned us into the car park.. Previous comments about the high quality of staff here are certainly true. This hotel tries very hard to please and in our opinion it succeeds.

    « Weekend Break »

We stayed here at the Royal Beach Hotel recently and found that this is an ideal place to stay if you have a car as there is a lot of free parking unlike hotels nearer to Portsmouth. The rooms are nice and breakfast was good with nice relaxed bar area for the evening. The walk from here to the Hoverport is within easy walking distance if you decide to go to the Isle of Wight also buses every 10mins to Portsmouth city centre taking the Star 7 just outside to the left of the hotel looking out to sea. Overall a very nice hotel.

    « Feels like home »

A hotel should feel a little like home, it should be clean and welcoming. That is the Royal Beach. We had a great large double room overlooking the sea. The staff were great, some hotels put efficiency above all else, this hotel has found the perfect balance between that and the wellbeing of their guests. The bar as in all good hotels stayed open late for any guests that wanted to stay up, without the barman yawning or getting into his pyjamas The breakfast is great a real set up for the day.

    « Royal Beach Hotel »

We had a family room, which was just that. Plenty of space and a beautiful sea view. Very accommodating to pets. Although it was obvious that there were several groups staying at the hotel, the staff were very attentive and approachable. Lovely location with easy access to all parts of the city, by either public transport or walking.

    « Wonderful! »

We went here for my Mother's 70th birthday. It was a lovely hotel to stay in. Very comfortable bed. It was nicer than my bed at home.I would come again. It was very quiet at night. Lovely! Thank you for making our stay memorable.

    « A graduation/Celebratory/Family Reunion »

The hotel was absolutely lovely, everything you expect from a hotel rich in history in such a noted coastal town. Good sized rooms, nice finishes, food was excellent and as was the drink selection. Breakfast was particularly good value as well as good quality. The only let down on this was the receptionist lady (Lisa, young blonde lady) who checked us in along with a number of our extended family, some of whom had travelled from America to be there. Her attitude and manner of way she spoke to nearly all of us was beyond rude, almost like we were interrupting her! Speaking very quickly, quite abruptly in explaining where the lifts were, various directions spoke so quickly that we had to ask her to repeat herself, which she did so but very apparently, angered her. As the first person you speak to and as the face of the hotel, where you are paying to stay at, the person on reception should be a welcoming face with a helpful attitude. I wouldn't let this put me off staying again, I think I would just have to question why she is in this industry if she spoke like this to me again (as well as other members of the family) overall, the hotel was lovely, well positioned, good quality and good value.

    « Traditional seaside hotel . »

Stayed with a group here. It was very busy but there is a positive attention to guest comfort. Would have upgraded to a sea view but the hotel was full. Sea front rooms look more spacious and have more light. However our room was well proportioned with a comfortable bed and pristine bedding and towels. I would have preferred a walk in shower rather than one over the bath but there was lots of hot water with good pressure. Housekeeping was excellent with daily attention to rooms leaving them thoroughly cleaned. attention to bathroom cleaning could not be faulted. Staff are most pleasant and helpful and seem to have a very positive attitude to working there.

    1
« Terrible, utilities in the hotel were atrocious »

The ironing board in the room was broken and was separated because of rust and when I took it out of the wardrobe it came apart and it sliced my arm. The iron was also leaking as they was damaged too.

    « Pleasant stay & dog friendly »

Really nice hotel albeit a little "tired" in places. Great that they allow well behaved dogs. Alarm went off a couple of times triggered by the steam from a shower!!!! Suggest they get that fixed. Good value. Great location.

    5
    « Superb! »

Wow! Having stayed at an establishment up the road the night before this place was so refreshing! Staff that bend over backwards to help spotless rooms even had a shoe shine machine in the hall! Food was fantastic bed really comfortable will definitely stay again!

    « Autumn Seaside Break »

Pleasantly surprised with the hotel facilities, and dog friendly. Given a room at the back of hotel on the fourth floor. Surprised room wasn't overlooking car park or fire escape, but over to the south downs and roof tops toward Fratton Park. Good breakfast selection and bar meals. Clean room and comfortable bed. Water fountain on each floor. Staff polite and customer service focused ,and all wore uniforms, therefore easy to recognise. Good location on sea front and near local attraction.

    4
    « Good seaside hotel »

This is a good standard hotel. Sea front rooms large with good bathroom. Parking tight and limited. Quiet with Portsmouth attractions accessible by bus or short taxi. Disabled access poor as through bowels of hotel from rear car park. Surely a ramp could be built for access and exit at front if wheelchair needed

« HMS Morcambe Bay Reunion »

What is now becoming an Annual pilgrimage for our Association. Most of the members are now knocking 80 if not 90 so a caring & considerate Staff are essential to cater for this cliental, it was pleasing to note that the Staff were at no time "found wanting" in this service. All comments about the Hotel, Staff & Management were "WELL" positive. A word of advice to the Best Western Hotel Group management. As the RBH team have worked extremly hard to cement this hotel as the lead venue locally in the reunion sector, I would suggest that they employ an Archietect/Designer to create a new entrance that would be far more user friendly to their ageing guests then the current provision.

    « Lovely Victorian Hotel »

This is a lovely hotel. The staff were friendly, and keen to be of service. In a lovely situation right by the beach, this fairly clean hotel is the perfect stay for a break, or a weekend away. The restaurant was very clean, and breakfast waiting staff were friendly and attentive. The food at breakfast was hot and delicious! The car park is small, and it is advisable that you get there early and don't plan to move it while you stay - they cannot guarantee the space will be there when you return! Having said that, we did manage to find a space on the road very close by (free roadside parking by the beach!) with no restrictions. The only downside was the bathroom in the room didn't have an extractor, and the window didn't open.

    4
    « Lovely Hotel »

With lots to do and see in the area it was a great place to stay. The area is pretty with lovely gardens around , there was lots of walks nearby for a nice stroll. Food was lovely and there was plenty of choice. Room was very big and comfortable, the bathroom was roomy with lots of fluffy white towels. The room was warm and the windows could be opened easily for fresh air

« Great Food Friendly Staff »

Arrived a little early so we checked we could leave the car in the car park and went off for a walk into town. Arrived back at the hotel around 1.45pm so was still there a little before check in time of 2pm, room wasn't ready so we waited in the bar area. Eventually got our room just before 2.30pm which wasn't great but we checked in and went to our room. Room wasn't clean so we asked some one to look at it after a quick hoover etc all was ok. We had a Carvery for our evening meal which was very nice. Breakfast is very nice lots of choice. Food is very good and was always served hot. Staff are quite friendly. So after a bad start it was a very nice stay. We was compensated for the delay and the room. Would use hotel again.

    « Excellent »

From the welcome to the farewell it was excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful even though they are very busy. The room was comfortable and fresh and the corridors and stairs immaculate. The food was fresh hot and plentiful. The quality of the good was excellent. Huge thank you to chef and kitchen staff.

« Very disappointing charity dinner »

I haven't eaten before at the Royal Beach hotel and after my recent experience I won't be again. I attended a charity ball which started with a 3 course dinner. The food served was like the poor school lunches I remember from childhood. I don't know when or where it was cooked but it was grim - hard roast potatoes, over cooked veg and puddings that had clearly bought from the cheapest supplier. I appreciate that the hotel and the charity need to make some money but the hotel will risk and lose its reputation if it serves food of such poor quality to the local community. Come on Best Western - I'm sure you can do better than this and you should!

    « Two night visit »

Two night business trip... What can I say, apart from breakfast I did not eat in the hotel ( see review on local restaurant 'Istanbul')... Hotel excellent, well presented and very tidy for an older hotel. A lot of effort and money has been/ is being spent on the rooms ...staff are great as is location and the charges are very reasonable (cheap ?)....... Only downside is the parking within hotel grounds could be problematic....... Would definitely return if required to visit either for business or socially

    « pre operation break »

We were glad to sit on the decking area outside and have a cup of tea due to the business of the reception bar area with a reunion of some society on arriavel. Pleasant triple room with sea view. Powerful shower and hot water but v old fashioned decor. The receptionist was helpful regarding buses to/from Gunwharf etc. Amazingly easy and cheap. We ate at The Chambers which was amazing. The beds were comfortable and we did not have to queue to get a seat for breakfast. It was a reasonable spread / buffet style breakfast. We'd go for a room with a balcony another time...

« Traditional, older style seaside Hotel - lovely »

4 nights, single room, B&B basis. Check in, & out, was simple & efficient. Car parking available at front (very limited so can get boxed in- Reception take index numbers so I think contact drivers). Main carpark @ rear has more spaces: from what I saw most spaces are good size. Room (215) :large room with great seaview, refurbished bathroom, and full in-room facilities. Being at end of corridor had no noise from passing guests. Room was very warm, so slept with windows wide open (just move the catch out of the way). The road outside is very busy until appx 1030/1100pm, and again by 0700am, but quiet during the night. Staff: plenty of personnel on duty in public areas, all well turned out (in uniforms), all friendly, polite & attentive. Breakfast was fine:I had granola & toast or pastries, and coffee. Large selection of cooked items and fruits available. Ate in 1 night; was a little disappointed with the batter on the fish, and the cheesecake dessert, however my colleague enjoyed her meal choices, so I am not reducing my overall rating. I like the decor of this older, traditional style Hotel;yes it's a little tired in a very few places, but the signs are that it is being improved/updated, and I like the fact that it's features haven't been ripped out! It's location is fantastic: on the sea front (which takes its toll on any building), with good level walking along the promenade to numerous places of interest (including Gun Wharf Quays), & regular public buses stopping a few yards away. I think this is a good quality value for money Hotel.

    « Traditional hotel »

Good old fashioned typically British seaside hotel. Pretty full of OAPs but nonetheless served a decent breakfast with a nice bar and the wifi worked ok. Nice walk to the town centre with a good choice of restaurants and bars serving the full range of food.

« Short break with .Johnson bros. tours at Best Western hotel Southsea. »

Good situation with views over the Solent. Very pleasant and friendly staff. Hotel is attractive , in good state of repair. Double room was larger that i expected with well kept and clean bathroom with unusual amount of storage space for toilet items. Dining room is pleasant and the Buffet well organized. and a wider choice of food than i expected. Fruit at breakfast was good. Helpful and charming young staff. We felt that we would be very happy to return another day.

« Reasonable for the price »

My first stay at this hotel. Considering the price paid (£69 B+B) the overall experience was fine. The room (427) was at the rear of the property and very much a single. The bathroom was tiny but functional. The general decor of the hotel is conservative but in good order and clean. Wi-fi is free and worked fine.

    « Fantastic break »

Booked a room for the night as we were attending a charity event. Check in went smoothly. Hotel is a bit dated but remember this is an old building. Small bar but well stocked and good service. The room was ok good level of comfort and a nice tea tray. Best thing about hotel is location car park is tight and small and first come first serve. I can't find a lot to get excited about this Hotel sorry a bit over priced at £95 a night.

    « what a difference a day make »

we had stayed in another Best Western hotel at Limpley Stoke the day before traveling down to Portsmouth and what a difference a day makes, we had a totally different experience here, same rating same group but this was a "Royal" experience by comparison, staff helpful, obliging, bar facilities good and properly staffed, restaurant in completely different class to previous experience of day before, breakfast presentation and approach to service, top choice and a great set up for a busy day. in fact we enjoyed our stay so much we had another day, car parking a bit hit and miss but little a Victorian hotel can do about that, (not every Victorian visitor would have a car so car parking not an issue when built) we found a parking place on side street and left the car there and walked everywhere for two days good exercise and appetite building to boot.our second room for the extended night had a toilet in front of a floor to ceiling window and with frosted glass and net curtain however one felt exposed and if ones in a lit room looking out into darkness one cant see anything, but it doesn't work in opposite direction from dark into light you can possibly see outlines not good for ones constitution (for either party) all above said we need to remember this is all subjective "one mans meat is another mans poison" and things can change from one day to another as demonstrated in this five day trip.

    « Not bad »

Went to a Masonic Ladies Night here at the weekend. The function room was one of three at the hotel. From what I saw of the place, it seems decent enough. The food provided by the hotel however, was not brilliant. The prawns in the cocktail starter were tasteless, and just defrosted, whilst the Panna cotta had curdled. Probably wouldn't choose to stay there, but then I only live10 miles away!

« Was here for a school reunion meeting »

Was at this hotel for two nights, when we arrived on the Friday there was a wedding reception in the ark royal dinning room, so our party(of approximately forty) were located in another function/dinning room for our buffet dinner, the food was excellent, the service attentive. Next night was a Saturday and the party I was with had expanded to approximately 75, dinner service was excellent, the food was very good and the hot course's were really hot, again the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble, requests were met with a genuine smile and quick response.Breakfasts were the usual buffet style and of excellent quality with a wide choice that should keep most people happy. Our room overlooked the sea on the third floor, it was clean, comfy and very spacious,as was the bed, the bathroom was also nicely fitted out with good pressure hot water for the shower, cleaning staff were courteous and did their job well. I would not hesitate to stay here again if I was in the area

« Not the "best" Western hotel... »

I went down to Portsmouth for a few days over Bank Holiday in August, for Victorious festival and visiting friends dotted around the south coast. However this meant that staying in one hotel for 2 consecutive nights was limited, hence staying in a different one every night. I booked my first two hotels months before, however having one more friend lined lined up to visit meant staying an extra night. I booked the Best Western Royal Beach Hotel in July via booking.com, for the cost of £60 for a single en suite, which was a reasonable saving going by current prices. However breakfast was not included. During the day, I had been to see a friend up near Portsmouth & Southsea station town, so the walk down to the South Parade sea front was a bit long winded and... long, on foot on a very hot day. When I arrived, I was waiting at reception for nearly 10 minutes as receptionist was on the phone. There was another receptionist on the other side of the desk but she didn't look very "available", nor did she beckon us over to her counter. However, another guest arrived 5mins after me and went straight to her counter to check in, to which she was suddenly readily available. Not a great first impression for a Best Western. Room and en suite bathroom was clean and tidy upon arrival. I nearly had a room with a sea view, albeit only at an angle. The room had nice big windows, plus my must-have blackout curtains(!) in a bright airy room. However my room was on the third floor and facing a building site; sure enough there were builders working from the early hours to late in the evening with noisy equipment, which I couldn't help but ignore on a hot afternoon requiring open windows for ventilation. Also to protect my dignity had to shut the curtains while getting dressing! The room also had an LED TV, standard tea/coffee facilities and shower gel, shampoo and hand soap in the bathroom. There was free wifi but fairly poor signal from my room. I slept fairly well as the bed was comfortable. Bathroom was fairly narrow, but well lit and everything worked well. It was nice to have a hand-held hair dryer in the bathroom which actually worked and was quite powerful! Unfortunately the shower head was too weak so took a long time to take a shower. On the whole this hotel was fairly average, décor was quite old fashioned inside, could do with a refurb. Also the location was a bit far from Southsea and Portsmouth town centres. Probably would not stay again.

« What is it with Best Westerns? »

Stayed here for business and wouldn't again. I don't know what it is with Best Western hotels but I stayed in one in Wolverhampton and it stank of smoke. With a smoking ban in place I thought this would make a difference but they have decided to place the smoking area in the rear car park and then leave the back door propped open so that the smoke wafts in whenever there is a slight breeze!! Car park, as has already been stated, is ridiculous and good luck in firstly trying to find a parking place and secondly getting your car in said space. There seems to have been some attempt at updating everywhere but it still looks outdated although the rooms were adequate. This didn't really help as I couldn't sleep as the room temp was close to being the same as the surface of the sun with no way of lowering it. Needless to say I didn't sleep. Bar prices are too expensive and considering that you need to walk about a mile to find anywhere else I assume that they have a monopoly. Breakfast was ok with plenty of it and the staff were polite, although forgetful as when I queried the bill (too expensive) they corrected it and then promptly charged me the same again five minutes later! Overall if you can put up with all of the above then go for it otherwise stay somewhere else. Not a happy bunny.

    3
    « Dissapointing »

This was not an over-night stay I would want to repeat. Parking is very limited, the spaces are on the small side and it's (apparently) not uncommon to find yourself blocked in by fellow residents who then have to be found if you need to move your vehicle. Our room was old and tired although some of the others in our party seemed to have newly decorated rooms so it's possible they have not got to the 1st floor yet? We had an issue with the sink in the bathroom which was blocked. It took two requests to get it looked at/fixed and when it was, the contents of the plug hole were thrown in the toilet and left there-when I showed the photo to the management they were not impressed. It was quire disgusting really; so was the black and moldy bottom of the shower curtain-no excuse there at all and to cap it off, the toilet seat came adrift from its fixings so sitting on it was interesting. Drinks in the bar were pricey (we were charged for water). There were several functions on that evening and the staff at the one we were attending were inexperienced-not their fault but management could perhaps look at this for future events? All in all it was not what we expected however our bill was reduced when we complained; I just don't like having to do that.

    « Needs updates »

We spent two nights at the Best Western Royal Beach in Portsmouth in September. The hotel is an older hotel and is in need of renovation. There was a musty smell in our room and in the hallways. Daily housekeeping was fine, but the hallways need more work. Although there may be a desire to retain the old charm of the hotel, our bathroom's design was awkward and the painted plywood surround on the vanity area was not well done. The hotel does not have air conditioning but an oscillating fan was in the room and did help during the hot nights. The bed was comfortable enough, but the television location was also awkward and located on the desk on the side of the room rather than wall mounted in front of the bed. The small table and chairs were the other side of the bed and with the small television it would also make viewing difficult if you don?t have excellent vision. On the upside, we had a corner room overlooking the sea. At check-in, reception's the instructions to the complimentary car park behind the hotel was made more difficult than necessary. The car park is compact and could be tight for larger vehicles and if someone blocked the exit. The location was good and about a 15-minute walk to the shopping district, Southsea Castle, D-Day Museum and Aquarium. This hotel is rated well by other guests and has lots of potential to be great with some updates.

« pleasant, clean place to stay »

we spent 2 nights in a 1st floor room overlooking the Solent. It was a pleasant view and as we had walked a long way for 2 days, sat and watched out over water. It was a warm room in evening, there was a fan, there was iced water in corridor if we needed it. the food was good. We ate in "bar" portions were too large for us but the taste was excellent. The room was exceptionally clean. For the charges, I cannot see why there are any complaints. Our main problem was the "car park". I have addressed that with hotel manager. He also was polite and understanding. we will certainly stay again.

« As good as always! »

A return visit to this hotel. I found that the reception was very busy on arrival catering to the needs of a wedding party, eventually an additional staff member was summoned to deal with the queue waiting to get booked in. Found that the room, 417 (a single room), had been well prepared and benefited from a sea view. I had dinner in the restaurant where the menu offered a good choice of dishes, the food was well presented and very tasty. The staff were very attentive. Had a table by a bay window which offers views across the sea. The buffet breakfast offered a wide selection of well presented food and again the staff were very attentive. Once again I was well looked after and will use The Royal Beach again!

« Lovely hotel for visiting the beach »

I booked this hotel because it was the cheapest and I was visiting uni. A bit far for uni, 30 min walk each way but fine for me. Book direct with the hotel as it's cheaper than through a booking company. Hotel was clean, staff were friendly and helpful and my room was massive with a sea view. Bathroom was huge. Biscuits and plenty of coffee making items left out. Very comfortable and very handy for the south promenade. No issues at all. I would not hesitate at going back. Thanks

    « Poor start redeemed »

The visit didn't start well We were part of a very large party booked in for a family party. A large number of the parties rooms were not ready at the advertised time of 2pm and the attitude of one of the receptionists was appaling. To be fair all the members of the group that were delayed checking in were given vouchers for a complementary drink. One. Of the staff then came over and told us the room was ready but on approaching the reception desk the receptionist with attitude said very rudely NO it's not. A few words were then had and I asked to see the manager at which said receptionist dissolved in to tears. When the manager arrived he was very apologetic and sorted the issue out and offered another drinks voucher. From then on things got better. We had booked a dog a friendly room and this was clean ,comfortable and had obviously been recently refurbished. The bathroom was well stocked with toiletries and towels the shower was hot and the flow was good. The public areas in the hotel were well appointed and the bar had a good range of beers (although daughter did say the house white wine was not particularly to her taste). We were at the hotel for a 60th birthday party and the DJ who was booked failed to deliver (he actually had a "celebrity tantrum and stormed off in a huff") but the hotel found a replacement who was pretty good (no mean feat at about 6:30) on a Saturday night in "wedding season". The party buffet was plentiful and enjoyed by all. The buffet breakfast was fantastic and all the staff with the exception of said receptionist were polite and engaging. There is a car park all be it not a big one and things are a bit tight but a car park in this location is a real bonus. Prices were reasonable so all in all enjoyed our stay Thanks very much

« Good Position on Seafront »

This was our second visit to this hotel this year and not surprisingly little had changed. We booked a superior room which was large and with good views. Unfortunately the rooms do not have airconditioning and on hot days, which we had, the desktop fan is not sufficient. The room was like an oven and made for a very uncomfortable night. The female receptionist was extremely rude and left us standing for ten minutes, whilst she made several phone calls, and didn't even acknowledge our presence. When she did eventually book us in she was extremely abrupt and unhelpful. Fortunately the male receptionist we dealt with during our stay was the exact opposite, extremely helpful and polite. The hotel has a pleasant and comfortable bar with good sea views. The hotel is extremely well placed with a bus stop nearby with buses to Gunwharf Quays, The Dockyards and other tourist attractions.

Very nice hotel with large comfortable room. Breakfasts plentiful and well presented. Staff pleasant and helpful. If visiting Portsmouth again would stay there. Car parking on site not brilliant, very tight.

    « Car parking inadequate »

Stayed for 3 nights in a queen size sea view room, very clean with a nice comfy bed but could do with a bit updating.good variety of food for breakfast and evening meal. Patio area at front of hotel if you want to sit outside but seating not very comfortable. Car parking inadequate few spaces at front, spaces at back but tight of you have a large car, only 2 disabled spaces at back but most of the time these where taken up by non disabled cars. When asking at reception about no spaces I was informed you cannot be guaranteed a space so it's a case of first come first served even if you are a disabled badge holder. Staff otherwise very friendly and helpful

    « Wonderful stay »

A really spacious, comfortable room overlooking the beach. Tea/coffee making facilities in the room and cold water dispenser in the corridor. Plumbing needs some attention. Quite a big step up to access bath (shower over bath), but a decent safety rail and non-slip mat. Huge bath sheets and ample towels. All the staff were really helpful and friendly. A good selection of food available at breakfast with good service. We also ate here on 3 evenings, the first was so good they kept our custom. Snack lunch in the bar one day was also very good and reasonably priced. Parking is very tight! Having parked we then used the buses from just outside the hotel. Would certainly be happy to stay here in future. They also accept dogs to stay.

    « Previous ratings over-rated »

First of all the staff was very very good and we thoroughly enjoyed our interaction with them. This hotel is famous in the the fact the in 1941 the Queen visited there and it seems like it has not been updated since. Not to be cruel but they simply need to update their facilities and do a much better job of cleaning. Our toilet flushed only half of the time only after you cranked the flushing lever 5-6 times. The pluming is very old and needs to redone. The sink still has the two faucets - one hot and one cold. Two night in a row the bar poured drinks in glasses with lipstick on it. This is a old hotel that is (was) quaint in it's day but is dire need of updating. Again the staff was very good despite the facilities.

« Great historic hotel on the sea side »

I stayed at the Best Western with my parents and my partner. Classic hotel with outstanding historic background. Great service and excellent customer service, attentive and familiar. We stayed at the old wing: huge room with high ceiling and very decent en-suite bathroom. Very comfortable beds. It has been refurbished but it still has as very nice classic feel which we loved. My parents loved their room at the newer wing. They had slightly smaller room with great views. Very good breakfast buffet. Good stay. we really enjoyed.

    « Perfectly fine hotel »

If you are in Southsea this is certainly somewhere to consider. Recently refurbished rooms (the one I had) has some with sea view. Comfortable and clean, but two miles from Portsmouth if you want to go to the old pubs. Car park at the back, and lifts to all floors. Will stay again if in the area.

« Saturday night NOT alright »

The room was fine, we were only staying on the Saturday night to get the ferry early in on Sunday morning. We asked about eating in the restaurant, we could if we wanted to wait until 20.45 for a table, but were told we could eat in the bar. We thought that would be fine but when we went to the bar we struggled to find somewhere to sit and the noise was horrendous. It appears that there were weddings taking place and the wedding parties have to wait in the bar until the room is set up for the reception. If we had been informed of this we would have gone out and found somewhere else to eat. We also had a room at the back of the hotel and had the smell of cigarette smoke coming in through the bathroom window and heard the disco until midnight,

Many thanks for a very enjoyable week as part of a coach party. Staff very professional nothing to much trouble, food excellent, plenty to do within walking distance of hotel with plenty of local buses if needed, our first time in this hotel so would definitely look at staying again in the future

    « Great Staff »

Stayed here for the third time in 10 years. Refurbished rooms excellent but because I'm older now difficult to get in and out of bath to use shower. The bath sides seemed very high. Reception found me same sized room with a walk in shower which although tiny was much safer to use. Car parking was a nightmare because the car park was full and one guest had blocked the exit. Really enjoyed (not) reversing all the way out. Breakfast was very comprehensive and nicely cooked. Some confusion as to whether skimmed milk was available which I was still not sure about after 4 days. Dinner was again very good, but choice did not change. This meant that the dinner on the day of my ruby wedding anniversary was a big let down. The following two days a car very meal was offered which was really very very good. It seems that when the hotel has wedding receptions normal residents are offered only the standard a la cartel menu which is limited. When they have specific groups for dinner, residents are offered the meal prepared for them. Is roast turkey, pork steak pie. So although I had a comfortable stay I rather felt my anniversary had been less good than my previous experience of the hotel had promised. I also felt that standard guests were regarded less highly for dinner than larger parties eg Texas Dance Troupes or large social groups from Isle of Whight. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but it's the perception I was left with compared to my previous stays. On a more positive note, the reception, restaurant, bar and domestic staff were first class. I doubt I shall return

« Friendly proffesional run Hotel, very British, very good. »

I had to rebook my room due to changes from my side, this was no problem as the man on the reception Toms Nimanis was friendly, very helpfull and a true proffesional who is perfect for the Hotel business, he made our stay at this very oh so British gem of a Hotel with history and style a real pleasure. The rooms are spacious and the Hotel is basicully as good as on the beach, and you are 10 minutes drive away from the main attractions in Portsmouth City. Would stay here again.

    « I enjoy it here.... »

We have been here a few times before, and it does'nt disappoint. It was slightly different this time, in that our evening meals were served in our function room as opposed to the restaurant, but the food was still very good( always hot, which is not always easy when dealing with large numbers of people). Breakfasts were still served in the restaurant and were as good as ever - buffet style with TONS of choice. There is certainly no need to go hungry in the morning! Room was excellent (no.202). Overlooked a building site, but with a view of the sea to the left. Large room, and a good-sized bathroom. Very comfortable bed, etc. All staff were very helpful and polite, always with a smile. I don't normally drink/buy wine in hotels, but the price here seemed a little high although I could be wrong. Price of beer was as per the norm in Southern England. Overall, looking forward to returning here next year. Wonder if the pier will be open then???? Parking is the problem here when multiple/large functions are taking place, but this is outside of the hotel's control.

    « Wonderful stay. »

A beautiful hotel, really charming overlooking the Southsea beach. Rooms were clean and had everything you needed. On the second day of our stay a lovely lady called Gail on reception upgraded us to a sea view room. The view was amazing and the room and bed enormous. All the staff we came across were really nice and polite and helpful. The food in the restaurant was really good. Would recommend this hotel to family and friends without hesitation.

    « Not For The Disabled !!!! »

The hotel really looks elegant from the front BUT the wheelchair access is the tradesmans entrance at the rear. You have to negotiate a very steep ramp and then travel a series of very bleak corridors a very small lift, the wheelchair just managed to get in the lift and I was so glad that my wife is only a small woman as she would not have been able to get in. For what you receive at the hotel for a room is the basics. The hotel advertises trouser press and iron and ironing board as standard so was surprised to find neither, when asked we were given the board and iron but was informed that they have no trouser press. I was really surprised for an average of £93.33 per night and NO breakfast the rooms would at least had a mini-fridge. The drinks were very expensive and added to that the mens washroom had 5 steps and two doors to negotiate again not good for the disabled. On a positive not I do applaud the reception staff who were extremely polite and helpful and I thank them

« Birthday Party and Overnight Stay »

We chose this hotel for my birthday dinner party as we were very impressed with the position of the hotel, the decor of the function rooms, the overall appearance of the hotel and the very positive attitude of the functions team. The whole team ensured my party went well, the waiting and reception staff are all friendly, polite and nothing appeared to be a problem for them. Our overnight room (4th floor, dual aspect, overlooking the sea front and promenade) was clean and tidy and tastefully decorated. The food for the evening party was well presented, cooked properly and of generous portions. Breakfast was most enjoyable with a wide variety of hot or cold choices. Once again the restaurant staff were cheerful, professional and most helpful. We would gladly stay at this hotel again and have no hesitation in highly recommending it as an ideal place to stay in Portsmouth.

« Victorian elegance that allows dogs »

The Royal is a magnificent hotel with a spectacular frontage to Southsea promenade. A beautiful corner building which has been well maintained and recently redecorated to a high standard. The restaurant was surprisingly good and the a la Carte comprehensive, we arrived late and had an excellent meal and as I am Gluten Free it made an excellent impression on me when I was told that just about all of the items could be amended to be Gluten Free. I was even offered a heated GF roll with my dinner. The staff were all very polite and could not do enough for us and our little dog. Indeed not the normal scruffy annex or dowdy small room at the back of the hotel, which is the norm in our experience, but a fine spacious double room on the fourth floor facing the sea. In the reception area there was a dog water bowl and we had access with our pet to most areas of the hotel. A very enjoyable stay, central location and we will be staying again.

    « Beside the Sea »

The Royal Beach Hotel is in a brilliant position across the road from the promenade which has plenty of benches for those who like a rest en route! Very close to a park with lots of amenities - mini golf, tennis, children's play area, boating lake, rose garden, cafes. The local bus service is great only a few minutes walk away very frequent and if you are a senior free! We left the car in hotel car park and use the bus into Portsmouth about ten minutes away. Ferry to Isle of White good trip and ferry to Gosport also good. Food in hotel very good plenty of choice and nicely served.

    « A treat by the sea »

Great location for the ferry to France. We were lucky to find a space in the car park. Staff were friendly and helpful but our keycard didn't work twice which was a pain. Room was lovely and quiet, had a great night's sleep. Doggie was welcome phew. A bit expensive for my usual budget but as a treat it was worth it.

    « Great hotel »

We spent a lovely three night break at the best western Royal beach. The room was very comfortable with all the thing you would expect in a hotel room, plus a wonderful panoramic sea view. The breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of quality produce to choose from. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Didn't use the car park as we traveled by train, which worked very well as all amenities are within walking distance, or a short bus ride. Would stay again.

« Lovely Place to Stay »

We stayed here for one night. Arrived late afternoon and were told that we had been upgraded to a sea view room at no extra cost. We were directed to the car park at the rear of the hotel and parked ok, albeit a little tight in places. Ideally situated for a lovely walk along the seafront and into Southsea. Our room was large an spacious, and the bed very comfortable. We ate in the restaurant in the evening. We were told we could mix and match from the carvery, bar menu and a la carte menu, which we did. Food very good, service very friendly and attentive. After a good nights sleep we had breakfast. Again, service was friendly and efficient. The food was good and there was plenty of choice. Would stay again if in the area, and would look at outher Great Western hotels in other places.

« Historical hotel but with very small car park that is full very quickly. »

I went to this victorian built hotel with my parents to celebrate their wedding anniversary. This hotel is situated next to the south parade pier that was closed for repairs during our stay, which we did not mind so much as it was very peaceful and relaxing for all of us. At first, there is a misunderstanding as we hoped to get a sea-view, but because it was a late booking and it was done via an agency, we were unaware that there is a £15 advance payments fee for a sea-view. We could not get this as all were taken so tom, the person who helped us at checkin offered a room close to the lift and provided a room with a partial sea-view. He also helped provide a room for him to be near my parents. Their room by the lift was very useful as they have mobility issues. The double bed were partly soft and comfortable and provided a good sleep for us after our long drive from Sandhurst. The bathrooms were great and I liked the sea kelp shampoos and gels provided that gave a mild orangey smell. The only drawback is the small car park at the back of the hotel and there is only 1 disabled bay placed right by the entrance and exit. Steering and manoeuvring in this car park is very stressful, especially if you have a larger car and it is all on a first come, first serve basis that makes finding a parking space very tricky to find. There are so other car parks available, but charges apply. If coming to Portsmouth and Southsea, it is best to use the bus via park and ride because their prices are much better compared to car parking alone. Breakfast can be included in the booking that comes in a buffet located in their restaurant, the ark royal. Breakfast food in here is great but you have to pay an extra £2.50 for kippers and smoked haddock as well as breakfast delivered using room service. We also had dinner here too, I had scampi and chips and a chocolate tart for dessert. This food comes from the Illustrious bar but you can also have it at the Ark Royal restaurant as well. Ark Royal lunch and dinner is a la carte and it is very pricey. Sometimes it is best to have dinner at the bar or restaurants outside, although you may have to drive to get there. Overall our stay in this 3 star hotel has been very pleasant, the staff despite their accents were very friendly, helpful and understanding. If you are not on a tight budget and just want to have a relaxing time eating ice-cream and viewing the sea, then this is the hotel for you. Children are also welcome here and the rocky beach is very close to the hotel. Sorry but you will not find any sandy beaches here. This hotel has much historical background and there is much to see and do in the surrounding area. If you need anything specific, it is best that you contact the hotel directly in advance, even before you even make a booking here. My elderly parents enjoyed their stay very much and I am honoured to have shared it with them.

    « Very Tired Decor »

The hotel staff give help when asked, though they don't (& didn't) put themselves out! The room we had (216) was a good size, though seriously in need of modernisation. The corridor outside the room has a stale smell, as if it was in need of a deep clean. The coffee in the room was extremely cheap so after one cup, I avoided it. The bed was also very hard and made it difficult to get a good night's sleep. When paying for the 2 nights, the receptionist took our money, gave us the receipt, then walked away! She didn't ask us if we enjoyed our stay, or wished us a safe journey home. We got the feeling that we weren't valued guests - just give us your money, then get out!

    « ROYAL BEST »

I had a lovely visit to this hotel due to a Navy reunion I was attending. I arrived early and it wasn't a problem to put my bag in the managers office, while I waited I ordered the club sandwich from the bar menu which was awesome. On the Saturday i ordered the ribeye steak again i wasn't disappointed it was lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful on the whole my only negative was with the main reception staff not giving you their full attention whilst checking out but I'm maybe to critical as there was a wedding on. But I have to say if I'm ever in Portsmouth again I will have no hesitation in using this grand place.

    « Leisure »

Parking was the biggest problem with this hotel. In addition there was a wedding party on during our stay and this compounded the issue. For someone who was accompanying a person with mobility problems it was just a headache. The food was really good as was the service. Most of the staff were friendly some seemed stressed.

    « A Pretty Hotel, with a pretty view. »

This is an old hotel, like some Best Westerns are; but it's really Home from Home. I found we had to watch the pricing of the meals, because all wasn't explained to us, and room service was expensive too. The beds were rather hard, but the sheets and towels, crisp and white-clean. The staff were all helpful, even though some of them didn't have much English. A very happy stay all in all. Worth it - I'll be back.

Stayed here 4 years ago & promised ourselves that we would return. We were not disappointed! Arrived at 13:00 & our room which that was more than sufficient was ready for us. Receptionist knew what she was doing & offered us help with our bags if we wanted. Breakfast was excellent (the bacon was the best I've ever had in an hotel!) We eat in the restaurant on one evening. Table booked for 8:30 but we got delayed in town (shouldn't have had that extra drink in the pub). Got there 20 odd minutes late but the waitress & chef told us not to worry & we had a couple of very good meals. Plenty to choice from a large menu. Hopefully it won't be another 4 years till we return

    « Superb Hotel »

I haven't stayed at a Great Western Hotel before so I wasn't sure what to expect. First of all the location/view to the beach/sea was most perfect. Although my room was a single and at the back of the hotel the dining room provides plenty of window space to view the beach and prom. There is free parking on the side streets around the hotel. The check-in was very good and the receptionist providing an excellent welcome. I was on the third floor in room 330. The room itself was single occupancy only but was spacious enough in my opinion for the one person. Just be careful of the door as it opens into the fixed wardrobe. The room was clean and tidy and all things listed in the hotels guide were available in the room, Wi-Fi, drinks facility, TV, hairdryer is fixed in the bathroom (usually in hotels I would have to ask for a hairdryer so was most surprised) Not a power shower but worked adequately and was just as powerful/hot. I didn't eat in the dining room in the evening but the breakfast service was good. Quiet time when I went down so got a window seat (as mentioned above) great views. Hot pots of tea/coffee brought over to the table. Breakfast was a mixture of fruit/yoghurt/cooked breakfast/cereals/pastries/toast with preserves etc. Food was being rotated adequately even though it was quiet so I was most pleased about that. Overall a great first time at Great Western Hotels and I would definitely be staying again in this particular hotel when visiting Portsmouth again.

We had a great stay at the hotel before catching our ferry to France. As my husband was in hospital we had to change the date of our stay and the staff were extremely accommodating. When we arrived we had been given a lovely sea view room for no extra charge. We thought that the hotel was excellent value compared to others in the area. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clear and very comfortable. We had a large bed and great extra bed for our little boy. We had a lovely view towards the sea which was a bonus. We didn't eat in the hotel but there is that option. We would highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Portsmouth.

We have just returned from a 4 day break in the South East, staying at a different hotel each night and we have to say that this hotel surpassed all the other hotels that we stayed in over this period. The hotel was clean, ideally situated and the staff were all pleasant and very helpful....especially at breakfast where the staff were outstanding and the breakfast was the best ever! The staff are a credit to the hotel and a special thanks to Alicia on reception for her assistance. We will certainly stay here again in the not too distant future. Thank you.

« Regular visitor to this lovely friendly hotel »

I have been staying at the Royal Beach for several years now and although I'm always there on business I always feel like I'm having a little holiday break. The main reason bring the staff! Several staff members have been there for years and remember us at every visit which creates the personal touch. They are very helpful & friendly. The rooms are lovely and spacious especially the ones at the front over looking the sea..... The bar is a friendly area to meet, drink, watch TV and/or eat. The restaurant is lovely with massive chandeliers and lovely views out the windows to the sea. The evening menus has a wide range of foods and I'v never been disappointed with either the food or the attentive waiter service. BUT my favourite part is the breakfast... Plentiful !! Help yourself to s wide range of foods but the full cooked breakfast is my favourite ????. Suitable for those travelling alone , families and a favourite with coach parties. I would strongly recommend this hotel

« Good stay at Beach Hotel »

We stayed 2 nights in a spacious room with a real bathroom on the 2nd. floor at the back of the hotel. No sea view, then we didn't ask for one, so no road noise either. (The main road runs between the front of the hotel & the beach.) There is plenty of ventilation through the windows but no air conditioning. The hotel is very clean & the staff friendly & helpful. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a large choice including extra cooked items to order. The entrance to the carpark at the rear of the hotel was slightly difficult to find, & I don't think it is large enough to accommodate everyone. Buses to Gunwharf Quays, Dockyard & Spinnaker pass by the hotel. We would be happy to stay here again.

« Great Hotel and rooms combined with fantastic staff »

I recently visited the Royal Beach Hotel in the tranquil sea front at Southsea. What a fabulous friendly and clean hotel. The rooms were clean and tidy and decorated to a high standard, great work on the new bathrooms. The restaurant was excellent and the staff catered for my every needs, along with the friendly, enthusiastic staff this made the meals a pleasure. The reception staff were a pleasure to meet and it was clear this was going to be a good stay, just by the way they conducted themselves. The icing on the cake was a safe place to keep my bike, many thanks. I must say thanks to all the staff and the hotel for a brilliant stay and I'm sure I will be returning again in the very near future, 10 out of 10 to all.

    « Worst Western! »

Stayed here for one night on business - have to say the only really good point is the location which is right across the road from the pier and beach other than that, there are many sour points: 1: I'm not convinced the bed linen was clean at all and thought the bed had simply been made from the previous room occupant! - the sheets did smell a bit funky to say the least 2: The room lacks air conditioning and was so hot I couldn't sleep - with the windows open too which made the room noisy particularly the activity outside which started early 3: The fire doors in the corridor were not spring loaded and therefore every time a person staying on the same floor went through them, they made a loud bang as they slammed shut - you try sleeping through that! 4: The bathroom had long black hairs stuck to the tiles in the shower - clearly not mine! 5: Speaking of the shower, it was a dribble at best 6: The Hotel / room is very tired and in desperate need of an overhaul / upgrade 7: The car park is small and awkward to navigate - I was blocked in and it took me over 1/2 hour to find the culprit so I could leave! The only plus point was the new fluffy white towel in the room which was negated by the dribble shower mentioned above. On balance and despite the relatively cheap price (For a Sunday night) and the location, I don't think I will be staying at the Royal Beach again.

Well, what a cracking little find! ....I was a bit dubious when I booked this hotel as it only has 3 stars but it was near where I wanted to be and thought for one night I could put up with it. Well just goes to show doesn't it that you shouldn't believe all you read. I was really pleasantly surprised! This hotel has a lovely welcoming feel and our room was delightful. We had a sea view room, which was very large and in the bay window was a little table with 2 chairs. It was so nice to sit there and people watch walking or running up and down the promanade and watch the boats sail by. The bathroom was spacious with toiletries and soft fluffy towels. Breakfast is in a lovely grand room with crystal chandeliers and there was so much choice, I had the full English and sat at a table by the window looking out to sea. Outside the front of the hotel is a small seating area where you can sit with a drink if you wish. The hotel is opposite the pier which is in the process of being renovated. Canoe lake is just 1 minute down the road where you can sit with an ice cream or there are a couple of cafes. Also, there is a beach cafe that serves fresh fish caught that day and your as near to sea as you can be without getting your feet wet. I will definitely come back to this hotel again with no hesitation , it offers good value for money and the staff are helpful and friendly . See you soon!

« Great stay at The Best Western »

My wife, myself and our son stayed here for 5 nights and all I can say is what a great and welcoming stay we had. We had triple room on the top floor which was overlooking the sea so that was a plus. Ok so there isn't much parking space, which I knew beforehand as I phoned the hotel prior to my stay to which they informed me that it was a first come first serve. The room was very spacious and spotlessly clean. The breakfast was amazing and the staff were very accommodating. There are fresh water machines outside the lift on every floor and I would definitely stay here again if I visited Portsmouth in the future. The Griffiths family

« Tired hotel in need of aircon »

My husband and I stayed with our three children at this hotel. It was a very mixed experience so I will list below what worked and what didn't for us. Good - the family room was very big / everything was spotlessly clean / the beds were comfortable / the bathroom shower had good pressure / there was a safe in the room / the breakfast was very nice and the staff in the restaurant were very welcoming. Not good - the car park was so tight it was a nightmare for a family car to navigate / the receptionist was not very friendly or welcoming on arrival / the room lacked things like bedside lamps / the bedrooms were hot and airless / the windows were very poor - difficult to open and providing little sound insulation / the room overlooked a busy road and so it was incredibly noisy throughout most of the night. The upshot of our stay was that we all had a very disturbed night because of the heat and the noise and had to cut our stay in Portsmouth short because we were all so exhausted and overwhelmed by lack of sleep.

« Great location - but shame about the bedding »

This hotel has plenty of free parking. It's across the road from a pebble beach and has amazing views if you're lucky enough to get a room at the front of the hotel. The staff were pleasant and efficient. Room was clean and spacious but they really need to improve the bed linen! It was cheap, rough and worn in places. The pillows were like putting your head on a paving slab to be honest. Such a shame. Breakfast was good (which was welcome after such a bad night's sleep) with plenty of choice. Good quality fare and kippers on demand! I would recommend this hotel again, but would perhaps take my own pillow next time!

    « Great location »

Stayed 1 night to visit the Portsmouth historic dockyard. I had a quiet spacious double room overlooking the back. It was very clean with plenty of tea/coffee supplied. The bathroom was refurbished to a high standard and was spotless, with generous white fluffy towels. All the staff were professional and courteous and free parking was available at the rear. Located opposite the pier with a bus stop nearby with easy access to the Spinnaker Tower and dockyard. I didn't have breakfast so I can't comment on the food.

« Good, apart from parking and a wedding party »

As hotels go this was good for the money through booking.com, room was fine, very good selection for breakfast, nice location with an easy 10 minute walk into Southsea central area along Clarendon Rd. for a choice of places to eat out in the evening. Over 100 rooms and parking for less than half means you could have quite a bit of a walk or need to be very lucky with finding somewhere to park. The guest arriving after us was unhelpfully told "on street parking is available" when they explained they couldn't find anywhere. As a wedding/party venue I would recommend asking for a quiet room. We suffered the bass thump of a wedding disco until late, despite being on the 3rd floor.

« Great location, spacious clean rooms with fab views, lovely staff »

A large imposing hotel right on the seafront in Southsea near the canoe lake. Wonderful sea views from most rooms and all are very spacious and very clean. Breakfast is very reasonable for the price charges and includes lovely sausages and bacon! Staff were all very friendly and Toms at reception gave us a wonderful welcome. Free parking if a little tight though understandable is a real bonus. Wifi worked well on all floors. All in all a very good stay

« Lovely hotel, lovely location and fabulous staff »

This is my third year of staying here and my family and dog love it. In the morning, I can take the dog for a walk before too many people are up, as it is across the road from the prom and beach. The rooms are large, clean with everything we need. It has a green rating on using bio waste for the boiler to power the hotel, which is a very conscientious decision, when leading by example as a company in trying to reduce the carbon footprint. I love the restaurant and the stunning chandeliers modelled on the titanic chandeliers. The staff are very helpful , friendly and accommodating. Thank you to all the staff for helping to make our weekend stay a lovely one.

    4
« Great location, great staff »

The location of the hotel by the beach in Southsea is great. The seafront walk to the castle, and on to Portsmouth begins across the road. The staff were friendly and helpful. The refurbished sea view rooms are clean and spacious.

« A nights stay after watching the America's Cup »

A very reasonable and pleasant hotel with friendly staff. The decor is a little old fashioned and there were lots of meeting rooms with equipment and chairs left out side . Our room was very large with a good sized bathroom and a glimpse of the sea. Breakfast in the morning was buffet style and very good

    2
    « Not Happy »

Booked through Booking .com and it said on the confirmation " on site parking available no requirement to book ". Not true told to go park on the street near the hotel if I could find somewhere. I couldn't. Went back to the hotel 30 minutes later and they found a stupidly narrow space in the car park several cars were already blocked in an the chaos next day would be awful. Breakfast was free the next day as a result of this debacle that was pretty dire to of I say " breakfast buffet " the words cold and rubbery bring shudders to any guest.

    5
    « Brilliant Weekend »

We would thoroughly recommend this hotel. This was a birthday present for my husband to go the America's Cup weekend. When I rang and asked if their was any chance of an upgrade to a sea view room, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us. Luckily for us - we were and to upgraded to a sea view room. The room was very big and nicely decorated. The full English breakfast was excellent in the morning. Plus we felt the cost for the quality of the hotel on such a busy weekend, was reasonable. We would stay again.

    5
« Lovely hotel, great room, excellent staff! »

Considering it was Americas Cup weekend and the fact that the hotel was hosting 3 weddings the hotel was great in all respects. The staff welcomed us, sorted out our rooms and even offered us a complimentary drink as the room wasnt ready - what mre can you ask? The room was big and bright with superb sea views, we loved it and will return whenever in Portsmouth.

« Great Hotel in a Great location »

Despite having to cut my stay short from a week to just 3 days, my stay was extremely pleasant with all staff being very polite and helpful. The only criticism I had was that on a couple of occasions I could not park in the hotel car park despite having a blue badge. I didn't make a complaint as I was still able to park close by on the street.

    3
    « Good location »

We chose this hotel for its proximity to the Americas Cup venue. The staff were excellent and the front desk in particular. The hotel is very much as expected older Best Western decor wise, always an interesting colour scheme!!!! Bedroom plenty big enough and a good view of the Southsea Pier and out to sea. Traffic a little noisy and with the windows closed the room got quite warm as there was no aircon but a small electric fan supplied sufficed. Breakfast buffet was good and again the staff were also good. The hotel car park is a bonus particularly at busy times.

« Very Good Value For Money »

The hotel's location is wonderful - on the South Sea promenade. It is 150 years old but very well maintained. The breakfast is very good and reasonably priced and is served in the main restaurant that overlooks the sea - beautiful. The staff are very friendly and bar food is reasonable. Hotel is very close to the bus terminus with buses going to the town centre every 10 minutes. Very efficient service. Only disappointment was the bed which was very small. We travel extensively and are are used to having either 2 x 3 ft twin beds or one large bed in the room. Room was also very warm since the temperatures were in the 30's. However a small fan was provided which helped somewhat. We asked for an extra single bed to be put in the room (which was quite large), but were informed that that was not possible. The room was also quite noisy at night due to some machinery (generator ???) in the central shaft. We would like to go back again, but next time we will ensure that the bed is a big one and that we book a sea view room!

« Good Value For Money »

The Royal Beach Hotel dates back to the Victorian era and is currently a Best Western hotel located on the seafront opposite South Parade Pier which is currently being refurbished. We had a large room on the side of the hotel, with 10 foot ceilings and a large bay window with a fabulous sea view. I should note that the sea view may not be there much longer as a block of retirement flats is under construction next door. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small and the shower never worked properly, either too hot or cold, so it was easier to take a bath. The bath was long and deep and great for soaking in. There is for wifi in the room and a free carpark for residents. We never made it down for breakfast, but did have nice sandwiches in the bar for lunch one day. The staff were always friendly and helpful, and were able to provide me with a hairdryer when mine stopped working. We slept well but the construction site next door woke us at 8am even on a Saturday, so I would give this hotel 4 stars instead of 5 because of that. Not the hotel's fault, but I would have preferred to sleep in. All in all we had a good stay here.

« Lovely hotel on the Sea front. »

Stayed here with my husband and 7 year old, we met my elderly mother and father here for a weekend break to explore the historic dockyard. Hotel was perfect for us, the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. We stayed in a sea view room which was huge and very comfortable, the beds were perfect. The location was a distance from the historic dockyard (15 min drive) but that was fine for us, as the location on the promenade, right opposite a nice beach, was great to go for a walk in the evening and there was a super park and playground just over the road with a lovely boating lake. I would recommend this hotel to couples and families and hope everyone enjoys it as much as we did.

    « Wonderful seafront hotel »

Wonderful hotel with the best views and an amazing breakfast room where you can relax looking out over the sea. Lovely features and friendly staff. Just a great experience. Its nice to walk out straight on to the sea front and a short walk to Southsea sea front and the Hover to the Isle of Wight. I will stay here again! In fact I cant wait!

« Seafront location, rich history but dated »

Great seafront location and out room (209-biggest in the hotel) had a very nice sea view. Check in time was 14 but we first got our room after a 1.5 hour wait.. Parking is an issue if you are bringing your car as they also let day visitors use the parking. The Hotel got a rich history and you get a feeling that much has not happened since, feels dated. The typical customer seemed to match this description as well..?? Breakfast was not satisfying and service mediocre. The room size and view was impressive but that does not make up for the rest.

    « Excellent »

Great hotel, clean, tidy and being a victorian hotel the walls are thick so you don't get disturbed. Forget the comments about it being dated, it just adds to the character. The hotels real jem is with the employees, we arrived ,in the middle of a wedding reception where everyone was very busy, but were met with smiling faces, help with our luggage and real feeling of we are here to help. I hope Great Western take note, you have a terrific team at this hotel.

« Wonderful wedding at Traditional venue »

My son and his new wife celebrated their wedding yesterday at the Royal Beach Hotel in Southsea. The staff were extremely accommodating and this classic old school hotel lived up to its reputation in providing us with a memorable day, looking after all of the guests and evening visitors who had travelled from all over the UK and beyond to join us. Prices were reasonable and the service excellent. I would recommend this venue to anyone looking for a wedding destination or even a classy visit to the seaside.

« Short fab stay at hotel »

We checked in 11 July for 4 nights. Quite old hotel refurbished a little modern. Very clean excellent food very good. Evening meal 4 out of 5 same go for breakfast. The staff very helpfull polite excellent service 10 out of 10. The bar lady in the eveing a bit miserable and got over charged for two large wine glasses by £2.50 . Also first time booked on the phone the gentlmen was really helpfull and he quoted me £90 per night we booked 2 nights few weeks later my partner asked if he could book for 5 nights. A week before due to check in something came up and changed it to 4 nights. When checking out i notice it said £95 and when I pointed this out The reception conveniently said they had only 2 bookings and there was no information to confirm this my partner had detailed the first oringal email. It might sound like i am complaining again but its the principal. Other wise had very good view from the room and all in all it was great stay but then again you can't go wrong with Great Western Hotel chain

« Very agreeable hotel in the grand old style »

This typical Victorian seaside hotel is well located virtually on the seafront, nicely appointed , clean and quite comfortable. We stayed for one night for student graduation, with in-laws in a separate room. They had a large twin room with a sea view from the side of the building - we had a double room (very small bed, but nicely appointed bathroom) with a view of a wall three feet away! Car park is handy but very tight to park in. Did not eat in the hotel but the menu looked nice, bar was light and airy. Breakfast is an extra (a mistake I think as it tempts you to go over the road to the Southsea Beach Cafe, which we did and which was really excellent). Staff however are very helpful and friendly. Decent value, but you might want to pay extra for the sea view if you are staying more than one night e

    « Classy and stylish »

What a lovely Hotel, it's in a great location overlooking the pier, which unfortunately is being renovated. They upgraded me and I had fantastic views on the fourth floor, and as a boat and ship nut this was very appreciated. All the staff where professional and friendly, I work with the public and believe me I know the difficulties, so well done ! The food was good and plentiful, I loved the balti one of the best I have ever had, I'm a curry buff and this was delicious. I loved the style and ambience of this hotel and kept imagining what it must have looked like in the past, Laurel and Hardy stayed here too, now that is class. Hopefully I will stay here again otherwise I will eat my hat !

« Amazing venue for our 40th Birthday »

My husband and I recently celebrated our 40th birthday's at The Coast Bar, Royal Beach Hotel. Brilliant venue, the staff and DJ were fantastic. would definitely recommend this as a party venue. Some family/friends stayed in the hotel overnight - nice rooms, comfortable, clean and tidy with nice views. Friendly hotel staff. Limited space for car parking.

    « Grand old Hotel »

Had a two night stay here, the hotel is right on the sea front so great views. The single room was very spacious, clean and the bathroom was recently renovated so all good. All the staff were polite and helpful. I had a lovely stay and hopefully will be back later on this year. Bus stop next to hotel which will take you right in to Gun Wharf Quays, Old dock yard & Spinnaker for only £2.75 return, bargain.

« Lovely but shame about the view »

Inside the hotel is beautiful, clean and crisp. Staff very friendly and food delicious, the only think disappointing is the view of the run down pier opposite, it's an eye sore. Recommend a stroll to the little lake a few minutes down the road, and the seafront is nice for a little walk

    « A boys weekend »

Very nice view from my single room. The room was very clean and just right for one. Although my room was great the corridor to it looked a little tired and could do with a refresh. I did like the staircase with the lights hanging through the centre. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Although their car park is a little tight to park and with limited spaces, it was nice not to have to worry about trying to find a space on the street. Breakfast was an optional extra. I would stay there again and rocomend it to friends.

« The staff were very friendly and the room was comfortable and clean but.... »

The staff were very friendly and the room was comfortable and clean. We had hoped for a room with a sea view but overlooked the kitchens instead. The room was spacious but a little dark and the décor was a bit tired. It is an old building. We didn't stay for breakfast (usually when we have stayed with Best Western they have been good) but could not comment on this hotel. We did dine in one evening and the food was ok without being exceptional; I found my meal was just lukewarm. There is a good menu selection. Beware they have a special hot buffet menu, which means you help yourself but this can backfire if anyone in your party has the main menu - both are the same price! It means you get your meal at different times and I would have looked to staff for some guidance for co-ordination, but none came! There is one small lift and so you can find yourself waiting around at busy periods. The bar is ok but is open plan with reception, although paradoxically the smell of curry bar meals can hang around when several people are eating them in the bar area. A comfortable stay which was not bad but wasn't excellent either.

    « Pleasant overnight stay »

This is an ideal venue for families to stay particularly if they have relatives in the Royal Navy and their ship is due in the following day. We had a lovely double room with sea view on forth floor. Had a light evening meal in the Hotel restaurant and in the morning a hearty breakfast. Very friendly and cheerful staff. There is car parking at the Hotel which is quite tight if you have a large car. I recommend staying at this Hotel.

« Fantastic view from the double aspect sea view room. »

An obviously old hotel that still has the charm with fairly up to date facilities. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. We took breakfast in our room which was lovely. Good value for money in a great position. We walked to Gun Warf Keys which was two miles but if you want to use the bus it's stops right outside the hotel. We would certainly stay there again.

The hotel is a big old victorian hotel facing the pier. It is furnished in a traditional style and very welcoming. The rooms are well furnished with some furniture from 70s/80s but made up to look up to date. The bathrooms are large and spacious. The Breakfast was a very good buffet service.

    « Enjoyable stay »

Loved our 3 night stay here. Lovely room on third floor with great sea view, we never tired of watching the ships coming in and out of Portsmouth and Southampton. Comfortable bed. Good Food and helpful staff. Plumbing a bit noisy but old building so perhaps expected. Its an old fashioned hotel but clean and everything you need. Will certainly stay again. Car park small so not always a space available at busy times. Will certainly be staying again for another short break.

My friend & I stayed at hotel 24-27 June. Our room was spacious, clean , well decorated with comfortable beds & great seaview. Breakfast was varied and tasty. All of the staff were efficient, polite & helpful. 10 out 10. Reasonably priced. Good location.

« Nice hotel but need some redecoration »

Room was rather fine but after we came I found a pillow with a huuugee stain on it. I don't know how someone could put something like that on a bed. But after that linen was fine. Breakfast - very good, with a huge diversity of food: fruites, eggs, sausages, cakes etc. Parking for guests! Fast Internet.

« View of South Sea »

We had a one night stay at The Royal Beach hotel this month. We have visited the restaurant several times over the years for a Sunday lunch, which is always lovely, so when we were looking for somewhere to stay for the night in Portsmouth, it was the obvious choice. I booked via Booking.com so it was straightforward. I didn't specify any particular room, but in retrospect it might have been nice to request a Seaview. Being an old building, possibly listed, the windows are single glazed and sached so give a lovely grand old feel. The room itself seemed a little dated in decor but the bathroom had been refitted and the over bath shower was lovely and hot with good flow. The hotel has a bar with food as well as a restaurant. There is also room service available. We didn't eat at the restaurant as we strolled along the sea front, but we did have the cooked breakfast which was nice and plentiful. As vegetarians we would have enjoyed the offer of a vegetarian sausage. Staff were very attentive though. The only down point as mentioned by someone else was the very odd smell in the corridor near the lift. Quite unpleasant but luckily it didn't seep into the rooms. All in all we enjoyed our stay and will stay again in the future.

    « GOODWOOD STAY »

Nice and friendly hotel facing the beach and opposite the pear. The rooms are big and clean. Fantastic views of the sea from the window. great two day stay. the food was a bit basic for the price that we paid. overall a good two day stay.

    « Great.. it's just the smell »

Panoramic views of the Solent, great location, fantastic staff and comfortable rooms. The only noticeable criticism was the stale musty smell in the corridors...made the whole place feel a little tired. That said, I arrived very late asking for food and the staff couldn't have been better...they are the highlight here so thank you. Short break by the sea with the kids...it's fine.

« Wonderful old hotel, could not fault it! »

This is a fabulous old grand hotel on Southsea seafront. Our room was enormous with far-reaching views over the Solent - I could have spent all evening looking at the shipping passing by. Excellent comfortable bed, good bathroom and shower, spotlessly clean. The staff were pleasant and helpful. We had an evening meal taken from the bar menu but eaten in the huge dining room at the table by the sea.... very reasonable price and good food. Breakfast was excellent, wi-fi was free and fast, parking free.... I could not fault this hotel, and it is lovely to find a grand old survivor from an earlier age so well managed. We will return!

Stayed here over last weekend, good location just across the road from pebble beach and pier.we have stayed here before because of location and friendly helpful staff/good breakfast etc, rooms clean and comfortable. The car park is small and a bit of a squeeze to get in sometimes, but there is some free parking just down the road next to boating lake. Location good for Royal marines museum, and DDay museum, Some convenience shops, chip shop etc short walk. Good food available in hotel. Overall Vgood because location.

    « Amazing location »

Lovely hotel overlooking the sea, beautiful room, very good food, excellent breakfast, lovely and clean. Our only objection to the hotel was the parking a bit dodgy getting in and out of the car park, spaces were difficult to get in and out of, however the location of hotel, was convenient for our travel arrangements.

Exceptionally clean hotel! Breakfast was very tasty and plentiful. Excellent service and staff. Our room was very clean, large bed and very comfy. Room was in need of an update as it look like the 1970's era! Clean and soft towels each day, exceptionally cleaned. Would recommend this hotel.

    « Nice beachfront hotel »

The history of this hotel is fascinating and the location is so nice, right on the beach. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I found the rooms to be quite outdated, though functional, spacious, and comfortable. It's a bus ride or taxi ride to historic Portsmouth, shops, or the pier with rides. South Parade Pier was shut during my visit. I got a rate with breakfast included. The buffet was generous but not the best food. I wasnt really impressed.

« Comfortable rooms pleasant staff »

Stayed for a weekend for a military reunion. We had a very pleasant seaview suite with a large bedroom with kingsized bed plus a sitting room with large sofa and desk area. There were 2 TVs nd tea and coffee facilities all very good. The bathroom was large with bath and shower combination. On the first evening we ate in the main restaurant and the food was delicious, a good choice well presented and very tasty. Breakfast each day was a buffet affair again plenty of choice of hot and cold items. The bar area was not large but still comfortable. The only slight disappointment was during our reunion dinner on the Saturday night in a private suite. The bar area was good and there were 2 barmen on duty. The roblem came when we went in to eat. All those attending had selected their meals in advance from the Hotel banquet menu. The starters came out as all had requested and were tasty. The problem came when the main courses came out, the vegetables were very dry and somewhat shrivelled - as though they had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite a while before the protein was added. Not only that - but some people had to wait a long time for their main as the chef had not cooked enough of that particular choice. Also one of our group has a severe garlic allergy and had requested that the chef give her either the fish pie or beef bourginon as long as there was no garlic. Again this lady had to wait quite a while and then ws given a dry breast of chicken and dry vegetables - surely a hollandaise sauce could have been made or somethig similar. Apart from this we did have a good weekend and were looked after well by the staff.

    « Old England »

Wonderful historical hotel with old English flavour! Located in front of a pier in front of the sea, there is a beautiful promenade leading to city center ( approx. 45 minutes walking). Take bus #1 from city center bus station to hotel is also an option. Hotel is super clean, room spacious for European standard. Breakfast is plentiful, complete hot English breakfast. Personnel is helpful and friendly. I would certainly go back!

« Glad it was just one night! »

Well where to start...well the carpark isn't particularly easy to find and spaces are in short supply. The receptionist was helpful and prompt. At the rear of the hotel room 124 is best described as tired and dated. The water pressure is terrible that means that you need to run the cold water when you flush the loo..if you don't I imagine everybody on that floor will know about it! There are cracked tiles and black mould stains, which make the bathroom just look shoddy. The bedroom is also in need of an update, but it was clean. Not being able to open the windows ensured a rather sweaty night... As an early, speedy and prompt get away was needed I ordered a simple breakfast of coffee, orange juice and toast to be delivered to my room...it was late and so was I for my meeting. Probably some lovely parts to this hotel, and for the price I guess I should perhaps expected what I got, but I am glad it was just one night!

    « Nice but dated »

Decent Best Western if a bit dated. Many parts of the hotel felt a bit old but the rooms are clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Room service was good as was the hotel restaurant. Location is across the road from the beach which is nice however it is a little far a walk from any stores if you need to buy anything or get to any good restaurants.

« Go for the sea view »

Paid extra to have a sea view, well worth paying extra as the room was excellent, a nice big bath, and you could watch the world go by. Hotel is opposite the pier though it was closed for renovation. Lovely flat walk into Portsmouth Historic dockyards along sea front though it is about 2.5 miles. Breakfast was very good with a good choice. We ate both evenings IN the restaurant. The a la carte menu was good and you could eat the bar menu in the restaurant as well. The lounge area was quite small for the size of the hotel. Not always possible to have a seat, as this was the bar area. Unfortunately there was no real ale on offer in the bar. Great shame!!! Overall enjoyed my stay and if I return to area would be happy to stay there again. Though I do hope more choice in bar next time.

« I was part of a huge AGM held over a weekend. The staff were very patient and kindly answered many questions. »

Very friendly staff served a great many of us in the breakfast room, the bar and for the formal dinner in the evening. The food was good quality and the dinner was hot and plentiful. I got upgraded from a single to a double room. The room and bathroom were very clean and nicely presented. I was at the back of the hotel which had a droning machine going all the time but I pulled the window closed and drifted off in a comfy bed and pillows. Check out was easy and quick. It was beautiful weather and many of us would have loved a roof terrace to sit, chat and sip a drink on instead of by the road. One gentle comment from a business perspective is the difficult lighting and terrible chandeliers in the big function room. With missing droplets, broken connectors giving an unstable appearance they really don't make the room feel special. Overall a great place and so close to the sea.

« Badly in need of a makeover. »

We stayed for just one night as part of an annual reunion of retired former service comrades. There was a private dinner held in the Victory Suite which was self contained with its own bar and dining facilities. We arrived early, around noon, as we were aware from reading other reviews that car parking was difficult. We managed to find a space in the car park, although it was almost full and the spaces were very tight and required a lot of manoeuvring. Although check-in is officially 2pm we were told that our room was available so checked in and deposited our luggage. The room was on the first floor at the west side of the hotel and overlooked a building site where McCarthy and Stone are building some retirement apartments. Although we could see the sea from our window this view will almost certainly be blocked when the apartment bloc next door has been built. The room was adequate, quite spacious and with all the usual fixtures and fittings but rather old and tired and clearly in need of some refurbishment. The windows were very old fashioned sash windows with secondary double glazing and it was quite difficult to open them to allow sufficient ventilation in the warm weather we were experiencing at the time. Nevertheless the bed was comfortable and the noise levels at night were not too bad. The most disappointing aspect of our stay was the food that was served for our dinner. We had made our choices from a somewhat limited list well in advance of our stay but in spite of this a number of people in our party of just over 40 in number were not given their main courses because there were insufficient dishes available. They had to wait for a further 20 minutes or so whilst a replacement was prepared. Moreover the overall standard of the food, particularly the overcooked vegetables, was not good. There was a large wedding party going on in another part of the hotel so perhaps there was some overstretch for the catering staff. Whatever the reason we did not get good value as far as the food was concerned. Although the staff in this establishment were polite and helpful the facilities are somewhat below par for a hotel of this standard and we would not recommend it until a significant amount of refurbishment has been carried out.

« Comfortable but old fashioned »

Clean, comfortable and spacious sea view room. Friendly and helpful young reception and bar staff - especially James on reception. Parking is a nightmare in Portsmouth so any, especially free parking is always welcome. However there's hardly any and cramped. I had to reverse round 3 tight corners to get out when I discovered it was full. Resident guests should get priority over visitors. There were a lot of huge vans blocking it out also. On street parking difficult to find which is why I chose this hotel in the first place! However had to leave my car 5 mins away on a random street. Be more honest with your advertising or at least reserve places.

    « Old-fashioned seaside hotel »

We had a lovely sea view room - very large, with a big comfortable bed. The bathroom was fine, with everything you needed, including a rubber bath mat. Free WiFi worked well. We were on the second floor, but the noise from the wedding reception downstairs was loud and went on till midnight. Our room and indeed much of the hotel seemed a bit jaded and there was a quite unpleasant smell, which we particularly could have done without in our room. In the public rooms there was carpet that wasn't properly fixed down that you could easily trip over. The breakfasts were fine, with everything buffet-style with plenty of fresh fruit and nicely cooked things as well. Our group dinner on one night was extremely good, although the curry night food another night was disappointing. We were with a large group and we and others had problems with our reservations, being told on arrival that we were a day late and had booked for four nights rather than the two nights we had. No confirmations were sent out to us when we booked, a long time ago, although the hotel insisted that they did send our confirmations. When we checked out our bill was right, but it didn't leave a nice impression on arrival to be told we were a day late! This hotel is in a great location on the sea front and could be really lovely if it smartened up a bit. Our group had a good rate and for what we paid it was very good. The staff were mostly helpful and friendly but were struggling to cope with so much going on at the hotel at the same time. As others have said, parking is a nightmare.

    « Friendly and comfortable »

As with all the other Best Western hotels I've stayed in this one has really well trained attentive and friendly staff. Room was spacious , clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good, hot and plenty of it. Position on the sea front brilliant. Only one niggle, the car parking is very poor. If you have limited mobility it's quite difficult.

    5
« We loved this Hotel! »

All the best of a traditional old style hotel, with great service. We paid extra for a posh room with a seaview, which was lovely and worth the money. Excellent location on the seafront, five minutes walk to the centre of Southsea.

    « Urgently needs renovation »

Two positive things about the hotel: reception was indeed very welcoming, and our room was large. Negative things prevailed, though: parking is a nightmare. First night we arrived late and were positively surprised to find an empty parking space. But the next morning we understood - my husband is an excellent driver, however, it took him 15 minutes to get out of the parking space with most careful manoeuvering only. Second night we were smarter (and of course our parking space from the first night was still empty then ...). Maximum height is 1.80m, this is obviously not only true for cars, but also for persons. So beware when you are taller, you may get seriously hurt. Some reviews call the decor "tired", I believe the whole hotel urgently needs renovation. In their brochure they talk about "this historic hotel evokes an authentic feeling of bygone days " - well, it did, but of the 1970s .... The carpets are old, the furniture is old. Even the blowdryer in the bathroom reminded me of cheap, old motels in the USA. At the door of our room we had a sign encouraging us to use the room's safe deposit box. When I couldn't find it, I called reception - and they just told me that there was none in my room .... Breakfast was also rather disappointing, juices were not fresh, choices of fruits very limited, croissants looked much better than they tasted. The sea view that we paid for was nice, but then we looked directly at the pier that is currently closed down for renovation. Apparently, this is not the hotel's fault, still we somehow felt betrayed. All in all, we paid by far too much, and we will definitely not return. There are much nicer hotels very close by.

    « Lovely hotel »

I stay here every three months for work and just returned. I love the hotel and always come home feeling relaxed. Lovely rooms, spotlessly clean, good wifi. Staff are absolutely fantastic, can't do enough and are so friendly and lovely. Breakfast is brilliant wonderful choice in a beautiful room. Can't wait to be back in a few months !

    « Lovely Victorian Hotel »

Bedroom overlooking the sea was excellent. Breakfast and dinner both a la carte and snack menu extremely good. Hotel is very good and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Car parking not so good as it's on a first come first served basis. Also the surrounding streets were completely full or double yellow lines so in the height of summer it would be a nightmare. Not good if you have a classic car or a very valuable car. Not good if you want to bring your classic car.

« Cheerful and Helpful Staff »

The decor is a little tired but that is my only complaint. The staff are wonderful and work as a team. Seemed to be cheerful whatever time of night or day it was. They were very helpful when we had a problem and needed to go into town. Also provided gluten free sandwiches for lunch, albeit at hotel prices! There are parking places but we came by train into Portsmouth and it is only a short bus or taxi ride out to the hotel. It overlooks the sea and is almost opposite the pier which, we understand, is under restoration.

« HMS Dido Association Reunion »

Second time we've held our reunion here. 3 night stay on b&b. Hotel was great, lovely queen sea view room, slept like a log. Staff were great, nothing was to much trouble. Breakfast was very good lots of choice. Buffet on the Friday and the Gala Dinner on the Saturday was managed very well and the food was excellent. Car park at the rear took a bit to find and was a little tight in places. Will stay here again.

« Great effort but behind on many things »

This hotel is in a fantastic location. There are food and drink facilities on site which is a great advantage. Parking is also a great benefit. However as many other reviews point out, the hotel needs refurbishment. It is very clean, but outdated in many aspects. You would expect most hotels to have a fresh and modern feel, but this one doesn't. This may appeal to some guests and the hotel does advertise itself as a traditional and we'll preserved building, but it would be nice to see a combination of modern and traditional which would be more appealing. The beds were comfortable, we had three pillows on each bed for our twin room. Dont expect Egyptian cotton bedding or feather duvets, but you won't get a bad back from the matresses, which to my surprise were very comfortable. The gentleman who checked us in at reception, as well as the bar staff were nice, but a lot of the catering and other staff came across as cold and didn't show much passion for hospitality. In all, the hotel needs some investment to bring it's atmosphere up to a standard that offers better value for money. I wouldn't stay here again but if you get a good deal and are on a budget it's perfect. If you are on a romantic trip or like the finer things in life, or if you have a moderate budget and want to shop around you could find a better option.

    « Just stopped by »

We stayed here last year and enjoyed it so much we thought that we would call in, as we were here for the day, and book rooms for another holiday. We brought our friends with us as they had never been here before and they were impressed with everything. All the staff are very friendly and will go the 'extra yard' to help. The receptionists on duty were most obliging and quickly dealt with our booking, and answered all the questions that our friends asked with a cheerful smile. We gravitated to the bar for a drink, and again we were greeted by very friendly bar staff . The menu was good and reasonably priced. I know this is not quite the review of other Trip Advisor reviews but I felt that the staff here are excellent, the place is spotlessly clean, and I would suggest that you try to stay here. We naturally gravitated to the bar

« HMS DIDO ASSOCIATION reunion »

arrived & checked in. The Reception staff were friendly & efficient. The room was spacious well appointed overlooking the sea front. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of variety & choice. The restaurant staff were very efficient & also friendly. The food in the Bar was good quality reasonably priced which was good value. Our evening event was well managed by the staff & good quality food. The hotel is situated on the sea front in Saint Helens parade opposite the Pier. Although there was limited parking the spaces were well spaced out. Parking was free for staying guests. The local bus services to the town & train station were frequent & stopped close to the Hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel.

    « A great Sunday lunch »

Although Southsea has so many restaurants, it can be difficult when you have guests to find a good place to visit for Sunday lunch. The Royal Beach had been recommended, and we were not disappointed. It was our first visit, though we live nearby, and it was a delight to enter the hotel, friendly staff, a comfortable welcoming atmosphere, and good quality food at fair prices. Sparkling white clothed tables, smiling helpful staff, and a feeling of bonhomie surrounded us as we entered the restaurant, and were shown to our table. Drinks ordered, we began our three course luncheon. All the foods are on a self service basis, and the choices for the first course we're such that we could have managed without any more courses. The emphasis was on fish, in a natural not over decorated form. There was a choice of 3 meats and salmon offered for the main course, and the only disappointing point here, was that at 13.00 half way through the lunch time offerings, the meats were cool and whilst good quality on the over cooked side. The same went for the excellent selection of vegetables, one realized they had been there for a while. All totally edible and enjoyed, could just have been hotter. I accept that this is a difficult situation at Sunday lunch time, when over a 2 hour period you will be coping with about a 100 customers. There was a good selection of desserts and cheese, I did point out to the mâitre after the meal, that there could perhaps have been notes to explain the varied gateaux and pies on offer. A tray of coffee is included in the generous price. My husband and I agreed that this was certainly a venue to bring guests on a Sunday. One suggestion for visitors when reserving a table, is to ask for a window side table, then whilst enjoying the meal you can see the world go by.

    « Nice friendly hotel »

The hotel was situated over looking the sea. Their car park which was behind the hotel was a little tricky to find and parking was tight and not many spaces but we did manage to find a space. Check in was quick and the staff very friendly, the hotel it's self was nice n very clean n was being redecorated, which we didn't see so it didn't bother us, our room was lovely n very clean n everything we needed, our room was over looking the city which was lovely. We didn't pay for a sea view as we wasn't gonna be spending much time in our room, The bedroom was spotless and also had pump soap but the sink n by the shower n shampoo, Our key thob wouldn't work, it ended up being the battery and very quickly it was fixed. Breakfast was plenty to choose from but the buffet cooked breakfast was cold and wasn't nothing to write home about so on the second day I had fruit, toast n cereal all with lots to choose from, staff very friendly and the room was lovely n grand, we had a lovely view over looking the sea, Bar staff was friendly n check out was quick and easy, We were also allowed to keep our car in their car park while we visited some more museums. It's a grand hotel n I would differently stay there again.

We stayed here for one night and we were very happy with the hotel; our room was large, comfortable and very clean. Although the hotel was extremely busy, check-in was swift and booking a table for dinner was very straightforward; the dinner was very good, and the service excellent, as was breakfast the next morning.

Excellent venue with good meal served piping hot. Very attentive staff and no rip off priced at the bar. Certainly good value for money. As an added bonus the hotel offered a special room rate for the guests with B and B. Only down side is the poor parking.

« Pay for breakfast and then be refused »

Paid for B and B. Got it first morning, refused the next as room only despite showing the confirmation e-mail to receptionist. On checking out had another receptionist check my reservation and confirmed B and B.

    « Just OK »

I spend a lot of my working life in Portsmouth and thought I'd give this hotel a try, just to mix it up a bit! Reception staff were very pleasant, welcoming and helpful on checking in, out and any queries in between - nice one guys! The hotel itself is dated.....very dated. Obviously a grand old building, but overall, in desperate need of a major overhaul. Would be a great candidate for that Alex Polenzi lady to spend a few weeks at. Rooms themselves are fine and fairly comfortable. Very spacious and I had a fine sea view! But the Queen bed was two singles tagged together. I saw on another review the suggestion that this is a standard approach in the industry. Not sure I buy that line. The attraction of a Queen bed (as a single guest) is the thought of spreading yourself over it and feeling the splendour of space and a zillion different angles to sleep in. The illusion of lroom to stretch out is quashed when you've the hard ridge of a dividing line part way across it. Food in the restaurant was pretty good. Nice pork belly steak in a rich gravy. Again - great space, but felt stuck in the 80's from a decor stand point. The next night I thought I'd give the bar food a bash.....not so good. I was served by a young lad who kept calling me 'pal' (he wasn't even from Glasgow). Now I'm no snob, but calling your guests 'pal' isn't really the way to go. I like to think I must look young and cool and the lad thought of me more as a peer than a 40 something year old business traveller or maybe he genuinely wanted to be my friend. Sadly the staff didn't seem to know the menu e.g. what the 'pie of the day' was and when it (steak and onion) was served ('there you go pal'), it was edible but the meat very chewy and really not the best quality. Regardless, I ate it all and after it was taken away ('you finished have you pal?'), I was entertained by the bar maid wandering around the bar asking at volume if anyone had ordered a prawn cocktail. So - ultimately an average stay at an average hotel. Average isn't bad, nor is it that good and this hotel could be sooooo much better, it just needs a million or two thrown at it to bring it into the 21st century.

    « Excellent stay »

We like our hotels to have a bit of history and the Royal Beach certainly has an interesting history, the location close to sea is very good. We booked a standard double room and were given a room with sea view without asking so we felt very appreciated as guests. Breakfast buffet was excellent and staff very friendly and polite. We had a perfect short break.

Beautifully situated on the sea front, with parking. Our fourth visit to The Royal Beach Hotel.Reception staff recognised us and welcomed us back.A spotlessly clean hotel.Excellent bar meals with polite staff. The buffet style breakfast was outstanding. The dining room was spacious with beautiful sea views.Only downside, is if you book online with companies other than the hotel itself, the rooms aren't as spacious. But they are a bit cheaper!Highly recommended.

« Perfect location, great views, huge rooms »

We had a wonderful stay. We had 2 huge interconnecting rooms for our family of 5( and our small dog!) with large bay windows with seats to relax and admire the sea view. The room was very clean, food was good and staff very helpful and accommodating. Our 1 daughter is in a wheelchair and our only slight criticism was the length of time we had to wait for the lift, as so many able bodied people used it! (not the hotels fault of course ) The situation of the hotel is perfect for wheelchairs as across the road is the long level promenade which runs both right into Southsea and out to a lovely small park with lake. We will definitely come back again.

    « superb Southsea! »

walking the Solent Way we decided to spend the night at the Royal Beach, Southsea. it's a smashing hotel, like hotels used to be/should be. lovely Victorian exterior, inside soft carpets, a warm welcome, ace room and superb yummy bar food, supper sitting looking out over the sea. we loved the whole thing. Southsea sea front is smashing, really well refurbed, freshly painted. seems like the local council really care? pity the pier renovation is not finished yet but it is truly the most beautiful pier I have ever seen - hurry up, guys!

We stayed at the Royal beach for a conference, the service was exemplary, the staff could not do enough they were always attentive and polite, the rooms were spacious & well decorated, the beds very comfortable and the food throughout was excellent. With a luncheon for nearly 150, the service was without fault & food delivered hot & tasty. I would happily recommend a stay here to anyone

    « A great place to stay »

My wife was attending a conference being held at this hotel and I tagged along as a visitor. After a coach trip from Maidstone to Southsea, what a pleasant surprise. The hotel is right on the sea front just across the road from the pier, unfortunately the pier was shut for maintenance and has been for 20 months with no sign of it reopening. The hotel is a very grand place, well furnished and looked after. The staff are well presented and helpful. The room we had was very big with a balcony although you to climb out through the window to get on to it. Food in the restaurant is very good with a lot of choice. I'd love to go back to this hotel once the pier is open again and maybe with a nice show on.

« Clean and Tidy Seaside Hotel »

Booked at the last minute. Room was clean, very large and the bed was very comfy. Lovely view. No problem parking. Buffet style breakfast which was good. Bathroom adequate although I would have preferred a shower rather than a shower over a bath (but that just personnel preference)

    « Old and tired »

Room 203 for three nights. Paid extra for a sea view and although yes I could see half the prom, I actually overlooked the building site next door. I (incorrectly) assumed that the additional charge would have got me a sea view, front facing room where I could see the horizon...wrong. Room was adequate but tired. Lots of cracked floor and wall tiles in the bathroom. A toilet that took two flushes to remove the waste, then howled and groaned and vibrated through the cold water fill up. This was so bad I dared not flush the loo at night! Bed was ok but was actually two singles bolted together with the resulting ridge running down the middle forcing you to sleep on either side. Despite numerous notices around the room to lock your valuables in the safe, both mine and my colleagues safes did not work. In fact the out of order sticker on it had been there so long it had curled at the edges! Staff were functional but not really engaging or particularly friendly. We didn't find the evening menu particularly inviting so ate out each night. Breakfast was a self serve buffet and luke warm. Car parking is very limited and not easy to get in to or out of. In my opinion this beautiful 1866 Victorian building needs bringing up to present day standards and requirements.

    « A Wonderful Birthday Treat »

I cannot think of a better place to have celebrated my 'special' Birthday. We have been here before and it has always been an absolute delight - this time was no exception. From the very first moment on our arrival to our departure we were treated as if we were indeed, someone special. The staff were amazing, each and every one - nothing was too much trouble and we were always greeted with a smile and treated like long lost friends. It's hard to leave this wonderful place - I wanted to take them all with me! The room was beautiful, spotlessly clean and really comfortable. As for the food - simply superb! From brilliant breakfasts, luscious lunches to dazzling dinners - every one a winner - amazing stuff!! All set in a stunning dining room with magnificent chandeliers. What a delight! The hotel is situated right on the seafront and it is such a pleasure to walk for miles along the chain walk Millennium Promenade (in either direction) right into Portsmouth if you like, and it's all along the seafront! I just love this place and I cannot recommend it highly enough - you will not be disappointed.

« Lovely friendly hotel with a fabulous breakfast. »

I booked 3 rooms for family here to stay as we were visiting other family members in Fareham. The hotel is very good value for such prime position on the seafront and the rooms comfortable and clean. The breakfast was great with everything you could ever desire, be it full English, Cereals,Continental or just fresh fruit which included figs and pink grapefruit, delicious. The beds were comfortable and towels nice big bath sheets. Just a bit of noise on a Saturday night from a downstairs function , but not unbearable and finished in reasonable time. The hotel is comfortable , not luxurious but has a lovely atmosphere and wonderful views and efficient staff which make up for the lack of luxury. Would definitely go back !

« Great March Break with our Dog »

We stay at Best Western,s because of the dog friendly bias, we were very happy to be upgraded to a sea view room overlooking the pier and the Sunday morning runners !, The room was quite large and bed was very comfortable. Our breakfasts were taken in the bar area and were help yourself buffet style, as others have mentioned the car park is rather small and could be an issue at busy times, we did not find this to be a problem in March.Plenty of walking opportunity,s along the prom in both directions.

« HMS Collingwood Assc. Reunion Southsea »

We had a very warm and comfortable room on the third floor, the lift was just about opposite our bedroom(not the main lift) which was handy because my wife can't climb stairs. The room had a very spacious shower cubicle as we both have difficulty getting in and out of baths. On the Friday night our meal was passable, our rep.brought this to the managements attention, and our Gala Dinner on Saturday was excellent likewise our Sunday dinner. It's a DIY breakfast with an excellent variety of choices and as much as you like to eat. We found the staff smart, polite and very helpful, there was even a porter to assist with your luggage. Limited parking in front of the hotel but a large car park at the rear, Bus stops opposite the hotel with buses that will take you to he historic dockyard and Gunwharf Quays a very modern shopping centre on the waterfront. an altogether wonderful weekend

we have been several times to this hotel over the years and find it to be very consistent with its good service. The staff try to accomodate things such as different alternatives to the normal menu if at all possible, usually it is! Extra milk can be asked for when required also.

    « Great location. »

This hotel is located right on the sea front. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I needed to use a computer and printer. No problem there was one in the Reception that the Guests could use free of charge. The room was nice and quiet. There was a rich breakfast and coffee to go for the trip if wanted. The restaurant was overlooking the sea and the food was deliciously cooked.

    « Seaside hotel »

This is simply a lovely seaside hotel, where high standards in every respect are consistently maintained, and where you will always get that 'feel good' factor. The staff are without exception always pleasant and helpful, yet entirely professional in their approach. All things considered, just a welcome, refreshing, and very satisfying experience.

« Very good feedback from Group of 27 »

We were a Group of older friends staying 3 nights B,B and D, using a room to play cards after Dinner.. Taking feedback afterwards, all comments were positive. The hotel staff were well organized and helpful. Food was good at breakfast and at the evening buffet provided for our large group. The rooms that I saw were large, well decorated and clean. The hotel is across a not very busy road from the promenade and beach with a reasonable room supplement for the seaview with interesting passing water activity. Frequent buses go to Portsmouth Centre and the plentiful attractions, while the Southsea shops are walkable. On site parking is insufficient for late arrivals but is available on streets/car parks nearby.

Excellent well placed hotel right on the sea front, ideal for holiday makers. Very pleasant staff and very well presented and maintained hotel. Would heartily recommend to anybody. One of the best of the Best Western hotel chain that I have stayed in.

    « Traditional Hotel »

Only spent one night here after a sailing course in Port Solent. Although the hotel is quite "old-fashioned",, it is very clean and in a great location opposite one of the piers. I had a single room on the top floor which overlooked the beach and the pier. But the best thing about the room was that it had a bath in the ensuite which I was very grateful for after my week on a small yacht. The other thing to recommend it was the staff who were very friendly and helpful. The cooked breakfast was average and I wish I had only had the continental one which looked better.

    « Good stay »

Overall I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The room service menu in particular was very good and fairly priced. However, the shower's water pressure would often change and the temperature would fluctuate. Also both beds were very squeaky.

« Very stale Hotel that needs updating »

Stayed with family for one night. Booked well in advance and requested a cot in one room. On arrival told rooms were not quite ready and asked about the cot and was told it was already in the room. A few hours later collected our keys and was surprised to discover No cot in the room. Rang reception and spoke to housekeeper who told me she was going to kill someone. I was quite shocked at her response. Rooms need refurbishment along with public areas. The bar had an ouder of sewage about it especially from the bar itself. Staff were fine and breakfast was good. The pillows on our bed had seen better days and loaded with Dander. Not a very good night's rest. All in all, good location but will not return until it is refurbished.

    « Spring holiday »

Great hotel. Very friendly staff all of which were very welcoming and helpful. Had a Seaview room, large room very clean and tidy, one of the best UK hotels we have stayed in. Easy walk to historic dockyard in Portsmouth and hovercraft to the isle of white.

    « Awful »

Booked this hotel as a night away for my partners birthday. The room we had was a standard double but looked more as a basic room. The hotel and our room was dated and seemed very hot as the heating was on full blast. We had no toilet paper in our room when we first arrived either. I originally booked a Seaview room and we ended up with a building site view with a tiny bit of Seaview. The meals seem very expensive. We ordered our breakfast for room service the next morning and it was the worst breakfast ever! Everything was dry and cold and they obviously didn't read what we had ordered. I won't be visiting this hotel again and certainly won't be recommending it to other people.

    « Fabulous! »

Loved this hotel, it was fabulous. Opulent. Great staff all very helpful. Beautiful room with sea views. Great to know that the Queen Mother and the Beatles had all stayed here in the past. Food was good - lots of choice for breakfast. Food at dinner was fantastic. Can't recommend this hotel enough. Would definitely stay here again.

    « Lovely hotel »

We recently stayed here as part of a larger group for a reunion weekend. The weekend was that good that we have decided to hold our next 2 reunions at the same venue. We found all the staff to be extremely helpful, and I would rate the food as some of the best we have ever had, it was consistently of a very high quality and standard with a very varied choice to suit all needs. The hotel was very clean and our room was very comfortable and we could fault nothing. The hotel itself is currently undergoing some modernisation, and we found that some of the sash windows in our room were stuck in the open position, but the secondary double glazing was more than adequate to ensure this wasn't an issue. The hotel was also dog friendly, which we always like to see. Thankyou for a lovely weekend.

    « A Real Delight Every Time »

We have stayed at this hotel on several occasions and every time it has not let us down. The location is excellent for a relaxed night away, calm and just out of town enough so you can wander in if you like or just enjoy the more peaceful end of Southsea. The staff every time we visit can not do enough and are always friendly and calm. I've never seen any of them flustered and by definition of what they do this must happen sometimes! They also will go out there way to help if they can or meet any special requests. Well done the whole team, from reception to bar staff. I don't want to say too much as I don't want to encourage others to visit, this is our secret haha If you want a peaceful getaway then this is ideal!

« Good hotel in convenient location »

Our sea view room was large with lots of natural light. In-room safe, large radiator, fan (windows can't be opened), well stocked tea and coffee mini tray with fresh cookies daily and good, easily controlled shower. The only downside was the lack of fresh air or air conditioning did make the room feel rather stuffy at night, although the fan helped. Very convenient and frequent number 23 bus service starts and ends its route just across the road to Southsea shops and the Hard Interchange (for Portsmouth Harbour station and ferry service, Portsmouth Dockyard and Gunwharf quays). As vegetarians we were very impressed by the variety of menu options available in the lounge bar and did not have to search outside for the 4 nights we spent there - a very pleasant and rare experience! The quorn curry, for example, could be ordered as korma, balti or jalfrezi and was generously served with nan bread, poppadoms and mango chutney at a reasonable price. So nice to have options that don't always involve cheese - well done Royal Beach! Buffet breakfast, served in the elegant main restaurant with views of the Solent, was excellent. Staff were friendly and attentive. Will stay here again if we return to Portsmouth in the future.

« Royal Beach Hotel, Southsea, Portsmouth »

Very good hotel on the seafront facing the pier and Isle of Wight. Well located for the city, Gun Wharf Quay and the Historic Dockyard, a bus goes to all three from a stop near the hotel. Although the buffet menu vegetables were overcooked and tasteless, the a la carte menufood was excellent.

    « Surprise Hotel Trip »

My Wife paid for us to stay at the Best Western Hotel Southsea as a surprise Birthday present. The Best Western is in a good location almost opposite South Parade Pier(which is currently closed for restoration) and Southsea Beach. The overall appearance of the Interior of the Hotel is very dated but this did not detract from our visit. It is still very clean. After check-in we were accompanied to a very large, well appointed room with a safe, television, Iron and Ironing Board, Hairdryer etc. The room and adjacent bathroom were clean and both were warm. After a few minutes of getting to our room, there was a knock at the door and one of the members of staff presented us with two small bottles of sparkling wine with a note from all of the staff to help celebrate my Birthday. This was an un-expected but very welcome surprise. Our room was on one corner of the building overlooking the Sea Front. There was two layers of glazing on the Windows which was a good thing as the Hotel has a road running beside it. There was no undue noise from the Road. Unfortunately, the weather at the time was terrible, so we decided not to go out for a walk but to stay and eat at the Hotel and have some drinks in the Bar. We ordered two meals. One was sausage and mash with onion gravy and the other was a Cheese and tomato pizza with four toppings. The portion size wasn't very big and the quality of the food was inferior. We ordered a side of Onion Rings which was very greasy. We did not feel the food ordered in the Bar was good value. However, the Bar Staff were very friendly and professional and the drinks were fairly priced. After a good night's sleep, the wall fitted shower was powerful and hot. We went down for Breakfast to find a very good and plentiful selection of food. There was cereals, a cooked buffet breakfast, toast and plentiful tea and coffee. I would add that although the quality of the breakfast was fantastic, the Waiters were slow. In fact, we went and got our own coffees before we realised there was even a Waiter service. Overall, I was very impressed by the quantity and quality of the food available for breakfast and I thanked the Manager as I left. All told, I would stay again at the Best Western Hotel and If you're planning to stay in Southsea it's a good Hotel to stay at.

« Very dated in parts and service wasnt good on check out »

The room itself is a relic of hotel rooms from about 20 years ago, but saying that everything was very clean and comfortable. The same can be said as the hotel as a whole but it wouldnt put me off staying again, the food both in the evening and at breakfast was excellent but the experience was let down by the least helpful staff at check out that I have dealt with for a long time

    « 3rd visit. »

Plus points: Excellent staff, especially the night manager and the bar manageress. Breakfast was as expected , excellent. Our room was clean and comfortable. Minus points: We were told that the refurbished bathrooms in the queen (Seaview rooms) had been refurbished and now had power showers...cobblers! Naff showers! The whole place could do with a makeover, wallpaper falling off and the carpets are worn. Enthusiasm is dwindling for this establishment, which is a shame as it makes a great base for our trips to Portsmouth.

« Comfortable hotel with a good restaurant »

Visited for a dancing weekend having previously been here last year. Many rooms have been updated to a good standard and our one was very nice indeed even though it did look out the back onto the car park. Restaurant food was buffet style but good quality and variety. Pleasant staff in all departments who were friendly. Parking can be a problem.

« Lovely staff, tasty breakfast, good beds »

Second time we've stayed at this hotel. Stayed in 207 this time, which is a large room with sea view. Rooms we've stayed in have been clean, warm and the beds are very comfortable. The hotel has a grand past and it's a shame that the decor is tired and shows the legacy of poor renovation. The staff are great, very friendly, helpful and smile. We've only eaten breakfast there which is plentiful, good quality and includes the full range go cooked and continental. The restaurant also benefits from two beautiful chandeliers which are copies of the ones that were on the Titanic. The hotel is right on the seafront, just walk across the road and enjoy the walk along the sea front. Parking is a bit tight, but the staff will help where possible to fit you in!

« A weeks dancing holiday at the Royal Beach Portsmouth. »

I organised a weeks ballroom, Latin and sequence dance break at the Royal Beach for around 80 people from Feb 29th-March 4th. Everyone arrived at different times during the afternoon. The greeting at reception was very good and attentive. The rooms were all very clean and well presented. The hotel provides free Wi Fi for all it's guests. We had opted for the buffet style evening meal each night. The variety and quality of food was just fantastic and the service provided by the hotel staff was amazing. nothing was too much trouble and they were attentive and friendly. In the mornings we again had the buffet style breakfast and such a large choice of food, full cooked breakfast and fruit, cereals and juices etc all nicely presented with many staff on hand to help serving tea and coffee etc. We had the main ballroom for the week and everyone had a great time dancing there each night. The general manager Chris Gilmore should be commended for the way he runs this hotel and all his brilliant staff from the duty managers down to the bar staff, waiting staff etc. He actually came into the restaurant on one of the evenings and served the gravy to his guests!!! Brilliant stay and can't wait till out next trip in November

    « A great dance week! »

Just back from a great break at The Royal Beach. Lovely and clean, good food and comfortable bedrooms. We were in a party that travelled from all over the UK for a dance week with David Read (entertainer/keyboard player). Ballroom excellent for dancing and it was good to have a bar in there too. There was also a lady there selling dance wear including shoes. We were booked in for breakfast and evening meals but we did eat lunch there in the bar. Quite reasonably priced too! Staff very friendly and efficient. Parking available on first come first served basis but our group didn't have any problems!

    « Very Enjoyable »

My husband and I stayed 2 nights and we were very impressed. Staff very happy and helpful. Room was brilliant with sea view and double aspect. We booked via Booking.com and did not have full room detail just booked a double, but I did email hotel to ask for a few special details owing to health and the fact we needed cheery room as we were there to attend a funeral and could do with nice surroundings and they certainly fulfilled. Food lovely generally comfortable and pleasing stay and would not hesitate to stay again. Parking a bit tight, but had no problems.

« Friendly and helpful, Clean and spacious. »

From when you arrive the staff are friendly and greet you. Reception clean and helpful. Rooms to lifts. Room spacious and airy. We had a double basic room and brought a dog. Was overlooking car park. the only let down is the car park. too small. we were allowed to have dog in bar area all night, she was greeted and made to feel welcome as much as us by staff and guests. Bar staff very friendly. Was able to order food in bar area and sit there to enjoy it. Nothing too much trouble. Restaurant available if needed. But no dogs in there obviously, Understandable. .Best place we have stayed at so far when we have visited Portsmouth. Feels like a hotel. but warm and welcoming. Bedrooms clean and spacious. Bathroom clean, shower okay towels fresh an clean, could have put some small complimentarily toiletries but large bottles on bathroom wall supplied. check out was 11am. £10 charge for dog, room price not bad.

    « A Nice One »

It was a weekend with a large family group; the hotel was busy with two other large groups. Parking was a bit tight but the staff helped jiggle things around to help. All the staff were attentive and quick to help, service was excellent and the bar prices average for a hotel. Everyone enjoyed the food - the all day bar menu was good and the breakfast was plentiful and a good standard. in spite of the numbers the staff ensured everyone was catered for quickly. The Hotel building itself is right on the seafront and our room had a sea view. The inside was clean and and tidy the bedroom was large clean and well fitted. The shower head had lights which was a novelty, and the bathroom was clean. No noise from outside but some noise (TVs) did travel inside. Summary a Nice Hotel for a break.

    « Great Hotel »

We found everything about his hotel good. The staff were all very pleasant. The breakfast had a good selection and cooked breakfast was piping hot. The room was perfect with a great seaview. It was very quiet in the evenings but perhaps a little bit too far from town if you want to walk. Over all a good hotel and reasonably priced

    « Very good »

I thought this might be an out of season seafront hotel limping through a long winter and we'd struggle to make the stay enjoyable. However, the place was very lively. There were 3 separate functions on the Saturday night which saw us moved to a different restaurant area, but without impinging on our experience. It was all managed by, what seemed to be, a full compliment of staff. This was really the theme of our stay in that we were impressed by the staff. The hotel is large, clean and well maintained. The restaurant food threw up (not literally) a few issues which were handled very well and the offending items were removed from the bill. So to summarise, our party of 5 felt we had a very good stay in a very good hotel based on tariff and service. There really isn't much to Southsea itself so a return visit is not on the cards, but of course its neighbour Portsmouth has plenty of visitor appeal if boats are your thing.

« Good hotel for a short stay »

I stayed here for a week on business with a colleague. We had 2 single rooms on the west side of the building. On arrival we both attempted to put valuables in our room safes but neither worked. I spoke to reception who eventually sent someone to fix the problem. They said they were unable to do so and both remained unserviceable for the week. They offered to put valuables in the reception safe but we declined...I'm not about to hand over my valuables to a complete stranger! We were forced to carry all out items of value with us all week, not ideal. When it was sunny the large windows in the room made it like a sauna and on cloudy days it was very cold as there was only a small radiator in the room. The car park is very small and fills up quickly. When full you have to try and find a parking space in the busy streets around the hotel Those were my main problems, having said that overall the hotel is good. Food in the bar is varied and tasty. Breakfast is buffet and has plenty of choice. Wifi was fast enough for what I needed. Rooms were clean but a bit tired, only to be expected in a hotel of that age. Overall, a perfectly acceptable hotel for a short stay.

All good, food, room, service, easy location, good bus service, nice walks, lots to do and see, easy access to the Isle of Wight and lots of shopping at Gun Wharf Keys! The Hotel has a great Dining Room, large menu choice and the food is piping hot! Not always the case in many Restaurants these days!

« Lovely Hotel, Poor Parking »

After flying to Southampton from Aberdeen, then driving through to Portsmouth, I didn't expect to then be faced with a 30 minute drive around the hotel to try and get a parking space. There are hardly any available and when I phoned they just said I should try and park in the surrounding streets. Eventually did get one. Plus side room was lovely and really big, and bathroom was big too. Shower wasn't great - piping hot or freezing cold - no middle ground. Bar was lovely and ate evening meal on my first night which was lovely too. Breakfasts were great. Would go back again if they got parking sorted.

« Lovely hotel shame about the car park »

I really liked this hotel, it's old but not tired rooms were clean and the staff were very friendly. I had a sea view room and loved watching the sun set and the sun rise. However... The car park is ridiculous! They have squeezed every centimetre they could into a space and there is no regulation of who is parking the result of which is that cars get blocked in or have to make million-point turns to get out, I had to get reception to call a resident to move his car back 1 foot so that I could get my car out, resulting in a stressful departure from what would have otherwise been a pleasant stay. Shame.

    4
    « Nice stay »

On arrival no parking available, was expecting a bigger car park very small and very tight spaces, however did manage to get a space as was lucky enough to check when someone was driving out. Room was nice, comfortable bed room was very warm even with Windows open. Shower excellent. We ate in the bar very nice burger at reasonable prices compared to restaurant. Breakfast was very nice and overall we enjoyed the stay. Generally expect a higher level of customer service from checking in/ checking out lady was attentive but didn't exactly make us feel welcome or ask if we enjoyed our stay. It's only small things but really think that makes a difference.

    « Nice place »

Stayed here for initially two nights. Firstly the receptionist was cheerful and polite. My room was on the 4th floor, it was a typical hotel room with a comfy clean bed and what looked like a recent refurb of the bathroom. I don't really have anything negative to say about the place. The project I was working on overran so I had to book another night, I looked on the net and the prices were coming back £25 per night more than I had payed, fair play they still only charged me the initial rate ?? All in all a nice play with nice staff thanks.

    « 70th Birthday Lunch »

Held a surprise 70th birthday lunch for my husband on 4th February, from the first enquiry excellent service. Organised a private dining room, excellent choice of menu and wine. Davina helped me to organise tables, we were able to have access to room from early morning to decorate the room and tables. Everything was wonderful, staff, service and food were excellent, nothing was too much trouble for them, we could use the room for as long as we needed. Four of our guests stayed overnight and said how comfortable they were and that the breakfast was very good. I would highly recommend holding a function here and will certainly use the hotel again.

Good location , the staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms were nice and clean. we stayed bed and breakfast with a good selection, the hotel is just across from the sea front which is a 30 minute walk into gun wharf, if we go that way again we would book this hotel again.

6th February. Had a lovely night at the hotel. Staff were very attentive and professional. Lovely evening meal in the restaurant. Room was spotless and well appointed. Breakfast was first class especially the special order of poached eggs. Particular mention of the waitress at breakfast. JESS looked after us very well. Lovely and polite with lovely smile. Made us feel valued customers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    « Enjoyable Stay »

This is an excellent hotel to stay at: pleasingly situated on the Southsea seafront, close to regular bus services, and convenient for visiting the Historic Dockyards. The hotel is very well run, staff being helpful and courteous. Breakfast and Dinner were of a high standard. Only small negative would be the transmission of sound from corridors to rooms, and vice versa. Very enjoyable stay--thank you.

    « Fabulous Hotel »

I'm writing this review over our breakfast table at The Royal Beach Hotal. We checked in yesterday while visiting our daughter at Uni. Check-in was easy and with the minimum of fuss we were directed to our room. The room was clean and tidy and warm. 2nd floor with high ceilings and a floor to ceiling bay windows with great view over the Solent! it was a stormy night so we turned all the lights out and watched the waves crashing on the beach opposite. The bed was huge, and very comfortable and afforded a great nights sleep. The batchroom was very clean and looked recently refurbished. Breakfast was a cooked buffet so theres no excuse for going hungry and the staff were amazing. I'd have no hesitation in returning. The hotel website has a good history of the hotel which is very worth a read.

    « On the up »

I stayed here with 3 colleagues and enjoyed the stay,it's a grand hotel let down massively by the lack of parking. The hotel is tired in places but it's almost it's charm, the staff vary from very young and enthusiastic to the old and clearly going through the motions. My room was clean and newly decorated and was really nice, we are out but had breakfast and this was fine, nothing to write home about but adequate and mostly fresh. Would stay here again but only for work.

    « Stayed a extra night! »

A clean and well cared for older hotel. We had a lovely seaview room ( hopefully the pier will be up and running soon). The food was excellent in both the restaurant and bar. The choice for breakfast was exceptional and my poached eggs were probably the best I've ever had. All the staff were friendly and helpful, especially Margaret and David but I must also mention Sam, Jose and lsla. We stayed a extra night as we liked it so much and would happily stay again.

    « We stayed a extra night! »

We had a wonderful stay and found the hotel well cared for and spotless. The staff were friendly and very helpful, especially Margaret and David, but I must also mention Sam, Jose and Elsa. The food was excellent in both the restaurant and bar. The breakfast choice was vast and the poached eggs were the best I've ever had. Hence why we stayed another night.

« Budget hotel on the seafront, good for a short overnight stay »

I have stayed here once before about ten years ago when it was a bt disappointing but recently stayed here overnight on business with a colleague and booked two single rooms. Both really cheap at £49 each including breakfast. Parking at rear of hotel included in the price although not that easy to find a way to the back of the hotel, however not really a problem. Check in was efficient if not overly friendly and one of us was upgraded to a twin room at the same price. This was a nice size, on the fourth floor up in the roof and very clean, looked as if it had recently had a makeover. Shower room was immaculate and again looked as if it had recently been refurbished. Furniture again functional and drab, a bit of a throwback to a recent bygone era. TV had freeview and was fine. Decor was not especially modern, more 70s kitsch. The single room was very small, barely room to swing a cat probably because the en suite bathroom had been installed to take one corner of the room. Bed was comfortable if not slightly small and a good nights sleep was only interrupted by the horrendous winds this particular night. As I said ok for one night but for a longer stay pay a little more for a better quality hotel. Location was excellent and I had a sea view. Breakfast was a selection of full English as well as pastries, tea coffee juice etc and was good although like most budget hotels the sausages were poor quality catering sausages. i can never understand why hotels feel the need to maximise profit at the expense of quality. All in all the hotel presented good value for money, but we still have a lot to learn compared to the Europeans when it comes to providing quality accommodation at a reasonable price.

    « Tired »

The room we had was taller than long! It was tired, noisy and not what I expected. The bathroom had tiles falling off and a rotten window frame. The bath SHOOK when the lift went past. The room backed onto the lift shaft and we had this noise all night. The car parking is ridiculous.... very small car park and is first come, first serve. And to top it all we had to push our way past 4 guys sheltering under the entrance of the hotel drinking white cider and special brew! All in all a very disappointing stay.

    4
    « Another great stay »

Great location which is why we have stayed here on a couple of occasions. Nice rooms very clean although bathrooms could do with a bit of updating. Staff all very pleasant but could do with more than one on at a busy time when people are checking out. Breakfast buffet very good. Beds really comfy.

« Pleasant stay at a good value hotel »

This is a pleasant hotel on the sea front, although there is not much in the area within easy walking distance and you will need to drive to have a choice of cafes, restaurants etc. The concierge was extremely helpful with parking when the hotel car park was full - it does seem rather small for a hotel of this size and the barman was also very friendly. The rooms were fine and reasonably quiet- two of us had a superior sea view room and these were larger but breakfast was very ordinary with lots of things wilting on the hot plates - however you can order some items freshy cooked such as scrambled egg. Breaksfast also stops at 9.30 on weekend days, although you don't need to check out until 11 am. To get a good deal you do need to closely check their website as often cheaper deals feature further down the room lists such as breakfast included and a superior room, though many discounts at better prices are offered by other websites. Also don't be lulled into thinking that the Best Western low cost guarantee will actually work. I found five different websites showing much cheaper rates and their customer service people in Milan refused to honour this as they said these deals were sale prices/discounts (!) so were excluded. It was a pleasant enough hotel in a quiet part of Portsmouth but nothing special and I can't see us staying there again.

    « A pleasant stay in a "character" hotel »

Having stayed previously, on attempting to book, all websites indicated this hotel was full for our required dates. On contacting the hotel direct a room was secured for two weekend (Saturday/Sunday) nights. Our room was small. but comfortable and well equipped. We had a problem with the safe, which was quickly remedied by a staff member. The small hotel car park was full when we arrived for our first night and we needed to find very limited street parking nearby. We were able to move to the car park the following day. On the first night, the main dining room was being used in connection with a wedding function, so we decided to eat elsewhere. On the following evening and for breakfasts we were able to sit in a "window" seat looking over the Solent. The breakfasts and the evening meal were good in quality and quantity. All staff were friendly, providing good service at all times. Accepting the limitations (and charm) of this old style seafront hotel, our stay was enjoyable and we would stay again if in the area.

« Nice one night break »

Booked day before we travelled after reading good reviews on TripAdvisor. Reception staff friendly and helpful. Allocated a very nice spacious sea facing room with queen size bed, two seater sofa and small round table and two chairs. Bathroom was rather small but perfectly adequate and complimentary shower gel, shampoo/conditioner & hand wash supplied in fixed 250ml bottles - always a nice touch. Very pleasant dining room overlooking the sea front, well spaced tables. Dinner was very nice and service good. Breakfast offered good and varied selection and again staff were attentive and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will stay again if in the area. Hotel is well placed for visiting Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Historic Dock area. We took the number 23 bus which takes you direct to Gunwharf Quays or to the Cascades Shopping Centre and left our car in hotel carpark.

« Nice Hotel but a bit tired »

We had a pleasant stay at this hotel and paid extra for a superior room. The room was large with good views across the Bay. Although the bathroom had been refurbished it wasn't to a great standard and on the first morning we didn't have any hot water. This was quickly remedied. The breakfast was good if you like the 'the full english'. There was fruit on offer which was under ripe but no continental alternative. Like other old Best Western Hotels we have stayed in it had received a make over but not the major refurbishment it needs. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the bar cosy. We didn't eat other than breakfast so can't comment on the food. One of the good points of the hotel is the there is a bus stop outside taking you to all major attractions. We never waited more than five minutes for a bus. Wi fi in the room was poor.

« James the best receptionist ever »

Great Hotel with top staff and a great breakfast. Special note of thanks to James on reception. Great welcome and nothing was to much of a problem. Best Western if you have a management accelerator program, then James should be on it. This will now be my hotel of choice when visiting the Portsmouth and Soutsea area!

« Very good stay at Royal Beach »

Pre Christmas stay, Staff very helpful, comfortable room with excellent breakfast, we had drinks at the bar and a three course meal at the restaurant both very good, food and staff excellent, very close to sea front and shopping centre

« Excellent hotel and great service »

Stayed 2 nights on 19th January. Booked a queen room with sea view for a very reasonable £162.00 for 2 nights. Room was spotless and very large. Bathroom slightly dated but then this is a Victorian building. Room service breakfast was very good although could have been a little warmer. Food prices were very reasonable and the traditional ploughman and chicken and bacon cesear salad were fresh well presented and plentiful. Staff all friendly and helpful. All in all an excellent experience and we will be back

    « Value! »

Stayed overnight after a works party. Firstly the Hot buffet at the party was 5 star even went up for seconds as did several people at my table did! The party went with a swing with the staff at the bar doing a sterling job. The room we stayed in was a sea-view room on the first floor the only let down was that it was directly by the stairs above the entrance, so if looking for an early night (luckily we were not) if you are given this room beg for another! The room itself was great spacious, clean, and very accommodating The breakfast in the morning was first class with choice of continental or full English with all the trimmings. Would not hesitate to stay there again just not the same room if looking for a relaxing stay. .

We were all made to feel very welcome by the staff. The hotel was warm, comfortable relaxed environment. The room was lovely it boasted beautiful sea views. The food at the bar was beautiful and breakfast was lovely too. Would recommend to all.

    « Xmas Do »

We have visited this hotel for the Xmas Do with a group of friends for several years. You can pretty much guarantee having a great time with good service, good food, music and dancing. Unfortunately this year we did not enjoy it as much. The food was good and served with amazing efficiency as usual but the disco was unusually so loud you couldn't chat and the room situated at the back of the hotel was extremely hot. The DJ played a disjointed range of music with the ability to clear a full dance floor from one record to the next. Just a couple of niggles on an otherwise enjoyable visit. Our room was large and comfortable and breakfast fresh and plentiful. This traditional hotel on the sea front is also a great place to go for their wonderful afternoon tea!

    « Excellent value »

Visited here for overnighter and very impressed.Huge room dinner good and breakfast 5star.Even though older building very tidy and bathrooms refurbished.Close to parade .Bar area good with good choice of beers.Off street parking limited bur plenty of other places

« Excellent lunch, great value »

We were a party of 22, celebrating a number of birthdays and some new jobs. Lunch was excellent, great value for money. Service was brilliant and the waitress, Sarah was extremely friendly. A very minor niggle would be the number of times she called people 'darling'. All in all an excellent afternoon. We'll definitely be putting the Royal Beach at the top of our places to go, for Sunday lunch. Thank you

    « Good Value Hotel »

We stayed with our two dogs at short notice just before New Year. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was huge and spotlessly clean. The hotel was truly dog friendly! Breakfast was great. Highly recommended and we will definitly use it again.

    « Excellent Christmas Party! »

For the third year in a row I attended my work Christmas party at the Royal Beach Hotel and it was fantastic - again! Lovely food, very friendly staff - nothing was too much trouble and a fab DJ so we could dance the night away!

« Fantastic can't wait to go back »

I stayed in this hotel a few years back and remember having a lovely breakfast, so when my friend suggested going for Sunday lunch I was quick to agree. This is is such a lovely hotel with a beautiful dinning area. The carvery was amazing, lots of choice and generous portions, couldn't fault anything and a reasonable price for such great food. Will definitely be going back and would highly recommend.

« Great Christmas Stay - As Usual »

Have stayed at the Royal Beach many, many times and have never had a bad experience. Thought it was about time I posted something here. In December I stayed over the Christmas period - for the eleventh consecutive year I might add! Throughout this time the hotel has solved the annual problem of how to keep the somewhat older members of my family satisfied! The hotel location is perfect, the staff are brilliant and they all go the extra mile. The Christmas break is excellent value for money, too. If you don't have enough to eat when you stay here at Christmas then all I can say is that it's your own fault. Thanks for looking after us over all these years.

    « Getaway for 1 »

Nice hotel, stayed for two nights on my own. 40 min walk to city centres but there are bus stops right outside. Breakfast was OK, i guess you get what you pay for. Would probably be better to stay in the summer to get full experience of a beach front hotel. None the less, it was fine.

    5
    « Fantastic Place! »

Just been to the hotel for Sunday lunch and have to say it was excellent! The food was lovely and the staff were extremely helpful and very friendly! We had the carvery for lunch and the meat was cooked to perfection with very generous portions! The dessert selection was also great with loads of delicious treats to pick from! Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Royal Beach and will definitely be going back!

« Sunday lunch was delightful »

One of the best Roast dinners I have had. Great selection of starters, lovely generous portions of meat, crispy fluffy roast potatoes, fantastic selection of vegetables and the cauliflower cheese was absolutely amazing!! There was also plenty of options for dessert. However the best thing was the customer service. Every member of staff was so helpful and attentive. I will definitely be going again next week!!

    « Christmas Dinner »

We spent an enjoyable evening with friends at the Royal. The meal was fine and included wine for £39 each the wine was not too good and consequently we had to visit the bar for drinks. However the food was good and they took care of the gluten free option very well, The bar staff were chatty and more than present and the dancing was all good (except for my effort)!

« Another stay in Southsea »

Clean and comfortable amenities. Hotel directly on the seafront. All the amenities you coud wish for. Ask for a sea view room the view cannot be beaten. Great selection of breakfast items. Free WiFi connection and Feeview TV.

    « Lovely sea views »

We had a two night midweek stay here booked via an internet deals website We asked for and got a sea view room. Our 4th floor room had recently been refurbished as had the bathroom so both were in very good condition. The room is furnished well and has plenty of space as well as wifi, tea/coffee making, good bathroom toiletries. The sea view was magnificent and we spent quite a bit of time watching all the shipping movements. We didn't have an evening meal at the hotel so can't comment but we did have breakfast which was very good. Buffet style with a large choice of cold and cooked food as well as some fresh fruit. I would not hesitate to stay here again especially as it was cheaper than the chain type hotels (premier etc) and we get a breakfast as well.

« Well worth the effort! »

I wanted a short visit to enable me to see a show locally and had booked other accommodation which had some flaws regarding parking so that was cancelled when I managed to get a reasonable deal for two nights complete with free parking. I (a single traveller) was looking for b & b or half board in a double room with a sea view and that was exactly what I got. I arrived Sunday mid afternoon and the restaurant was shut but the lounge offered a very good, tasty, inexpensive menu. Yes, it was definitely low season but all the staff ensured a warm welcome and the reception staff (James) couldn't have been more helpful even when I had problems with my key card!! Having been disappointed with a Best Western hotel some years previously I wasn't sure about this one but it far exceeded my expectations.

    « A brilliant Christmas party »

Had our company Christmas party at this venue and absolutely cannot fault it. The food was fantastic, the entertainment captivated everyone. The venue itself is beautiful and everyone had a brilliant time! Times in between courses were ideal too. Would definitely recommend it.

« Good Hotel. Real value for money »

I stayed there mid December 2015 and I was really satisfied. The old building is very fascinating and well kept. I was kindly upgraded to a huge sea view room which had everythibg you would expect in such a hotel. Being a business traveller, I would have appreciated a trousers press, but I understand that this hotel is mainly for Holiday makers. Rooms are spotless clean, very silent, with curtains and plumbing working exceptionally well (these last two things are not very common in the UK, according to my experience). Also the restautrant is very good: dishes are prepared to order with fresh ingredients and portions are copious. If the waitresses smiled a little bit more it would be appreciated. Be aaware that there's a free car park so you won't spend a fortune aprking on the Street. I will definitely return if in the area again

    « Fab Christmas party »

Went here December for a work Christmas meal. Excellent facilities food and service. Event staff very helpful courteous and polite, hotel rooms gorgeous and all hotel staff seemed so happy. Toilets clean tidy so I'll Definitely be returning.

    « Nice location »

Booked for an overnight stay as part of the Christmas party night. Room was ok , clean, warm, but a little tired looking . Overlooked the back of the hotel so not an exciting view. The hotel reception area and function room was very nice . The party night itself was really good . Breakfast was abit bewildering we were told that there was not a table for two available in the restaurant and the waitress told us to look in the bar area and a table would be set up. The only available tables were the low coffee style ones so I said I'm not eating from a low table. Back to the restaurant again we were told same thing no tables available for two but groups of three , four or more were seated straight away , we pointed out that our friends who we stayed with were sitting down and could we join them . In the end after about 15 minutes we asked two people to share a table with us so we could be seated to get some breakfast . Once we got it the the breakfast was nice with a good selection of cereals , cooked items etc. The hotel is on the sea front so lovely views over the Solent if you are lucky to have a room at the front .

    « Weekend Break »

Stayed here for the weekend, lovely location right on the sea front, hotel is very tired and in need of complete refurbishment, very surprising for a Best Western, excellent service and great breakfast,no air conditioning in our room which was at the back of the hotel and our windows where painted shut !! would recommend this hotel as a budget hotel but try and get a room with a sea view

    5
    « Very Nice Stay »

It's not very often that I stay in hotels in the UK and when I do I like to read reviews and compare before booking. However we were attending a wedding reception at the Royal Beach so it made sense to stay there. Thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay! We had a third floor sea view room, which was huge and comfortable. The bathroom looked like it had recently been refurbished. The breakfast was lovely, nice selection and well cooked. Staff were friendly and efficient. All in all a good stay and I was pleasantly surprised at the room rate. Will look to stay here again when visiting family in the area.

    « FABULOUS AGAIN »

we have stayed at The RoyalBeach many times this time it was for a 5day break a marvelous winter offer the rooms are lovely breakfasts splendid meals in the bar huge The staff are polite and helpful without being stuffy we love theplace and hope to go back very soon thankyou to all of you

« Great if you like tropical central heating! ! »

Stayed here as we were attending a club Christmas party. The food at the meal and breakfast the next day were both served hot and were really tasty. What let this hotel down is like so many English hotels it's in urgent need of some tlc. The toilet roll holder collapsed every time you tried to use it and the heating was turned up so high that even though we turned it down we had windows open all night as it was so suffocating. No worries about global warming here! Staff friendly and good service.

« Good value and excellent location »

Very nice hotel located on the seafront in Southsea. A short distance from the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth so a good base to visit that attraction. The room was well appointed and comfortable. Excellent restaurant with very helpful and attentive staff. Breakfast was very good with plenty of options and all well cooked and presented. The reception staff were all friendly and helpful.

    « Absolutely FABULOUS »

My friend and I booked a twin room to stay in after our works Christmas Party. We checked in mid afternoon and it was swift and reception staff were courteous and friendly. Our room was 119 on first floor. It was huge for a standard room, nicely decorated, had an ironing board and iron, fan, tea and coffee etc. My only criticism is the heating was on full blast when we got there so our room was stifling but we soon opened the windows and cooled it down but there was no thermostat on radiator to turn it off, but being able to open the windows properly and not just a few millimetres like some hotels really helped. We ordered breakfast to our room and it was fresh, hot and so welcome after the nights drinking! Could absolutely not fault the staff at all, every member of staff from the reception, party staff, chambermaids, room service people - all of them were friendly and polite. I would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat and in the future I will stay again without a doubt. Well done to all staff at the hotel, you should be very proud.

This is the second time I gave stayed in this hotel and both times I have been really impressed. Although the hotel is everything you would expect what really stands out is the quality of the service. The staff are so friendly and helpful and nothing is too much. We will be back!

« Hotel overlooking the Solent in Portsmouth »

The Royal Beach Hotel in Southsea is an excellent hotel for a visit to Portsmouth, as it is a short distance from HMS Victory and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (also the adjacent Royal Navy base) as well as other museums and activities along the Solent.

« Still as good as ever »

We returned to the Royal Beach for a long weekend, while we visited relatives in the city. We found everything as good as ever. The place was bursting at the seams on Saturday, with two wedding, a Reunion Dinner and a 60th birthday party with many guests staying the night. The staff were polite and professional and coped admirably in difficult circumstances. Our room was to the west side, yet we still had a partial sea view. It was large well equipped and comfortable and lacked nothing for our needs. The only minor criticism was that the UHT milk capsules were far too small to enjoy more than one coffee; however we asked for a jug of fresh milk each day and that was willingly provided, without question, thank you. Although there was some refitting work going on in the room next door there was no noise and it started late and finished early and caused no disturbance at all. All credit for the care taken to not upset the guests. The breakfasts were to their usual high standard and thoroughly enjoyable, with nothing missing. We dined in the restaurant on Sunday evening and although it was quieter the magnificent Titanic chandeliers added to the romantic atmosphere and we enjoyed a superb meal. Our fillet steaks were perfectly cooked and everything else was spot on. The restaurant staff deserve a special mention as they were very professional and yet friendly and welcoming. There was good free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, although it was a pain to have to log in on different floors as you moved around. A thoroughly enjoyable stay and we will definitely be back.

« Consistently good-- but be careful how you book your stay !! »

We have stayed here before and always found the hotel ,staff and food to be excellent. However, when booking our mid-week stay online, this time, I was automatically re-directed to Booking.com and believing this to be a new system for the hotel I booked for 2 nights at £174 which was taken immediately. However, upon arrival, we found that if I had ignored Booking.com the hotel charge direct was just £150 as there was a mid-week special rate offer available, but not shown on-line. The hotel said there is nothing they can do and Booking.com do not reply to e-mail queries,so I have therefore lost (thrown away) £24. !!

    « Stunning views and FAB - U - LOUS staff! »

We stayed here last weekend for a Naval dinner and get together. Apart from the stunning view from our sea front room, the complete lack of noise from the road when both sets of windows were shut and the tasty food, we were completely delighted by the helpfulness, the cheeriness, the politeness and courtesy of the staff. They were amazing. This was borne out by the fact that on the Friday night there was another function going on at the same time, then on Saturday - there was a wedding, our ASWI do with 90 guests, another family function and a 4th function. Seamlessly the staff dealt with everyone from the different functions, and the bar was never too crowded as there were spaces available for all. The afternoon tea with scones, ham, cheese or salmon sandwiches and tea/coffee was delightful and really good value for money. The meal in the restaurant was fantastic as was the dinner on the Saturday night. Oh and the bed was huge and so comfy - no shoddy past their best mattresses in this room. Several of us have already said we will return there again for a weekend break - with Gunwharf Quays close by we didn't get the chance to go there this time, but we did visit the Marines Museum and Portsea Castle a few minutes walk along the seafront. A quick tip for American readers, the Beatles stayed here four times and royalty has been here too - read the potted history cards available free of charge in the hotel.

    « Typical Best Western »

Stayed here with work several times. Free WIFI, pleasant seafront location, 10-15 min walk to decent bars and restaurants. Rooms generally spacious but bathrooms tired and dated. Staff friendly and helpful.

    « One night's stay »

I really loved the size of this hotel. It stood out, so we couldn't possibly miss it. We were watching The Waterboys at the Guildhall so just needed a place to lay our heads for the night. Room was ok, bed not terribly comfortable and next time we stay here I will ask for another pillow as they were a bit flat. Car parking?? Really! Are you kidding me? Did not reflect in the size of the hotel. Spend some money hotelier and get some decent space. On the positive side, the breakfast was just the best, staff were very friendly and very helpful.

    3
    « Desperately needs a makeover. »

The hotel is in a great location on the seafront and the staff were very welcoming and efficient. Thats the positives. The negatives ..... The owners need to invest some money into the business and smarten the place up. Top to bottom inside and out. Overall impression is a hotel that is shabby and rundown ,with staff who are trying hard to provide a service.

    3
    « Extra charges »

Room okay but uncomfortable beds. I stay here every month but never get a sea view. Check bill - I had a two course meal and two drinks on the Tuesday night and ended up with 5 charges where there should have been 3

« Driest Air Con ever »

Now, I'm not a hypercondriac or anything, but room 316 had made me sick as a dog. Within an hour of checkin my throat was dry as a bone from what I can only assume was dry recirculated air (although I couldn't find any AC controls). Needless to say, managed less than an hour's sleep and am sick as a dog 24 hrs after check out. No wifi code offered/given No parking!!!

« Association annual dinner dance »

Attended as part of a party for a dinner dance. It was a set 3 course meal. All courses were lovely. Decent portions, hot food was hot, plenty veg, enough sauce and gravy. Service was slick and with a smile. Bar service as also quick despite a few numbers at rush time. Facilities clean, would return again. On downside, parking is very very tight in the hotel carpark. We have a. Large 4x4 which found head room and the tight corners a bit challenging

« Our club annual dinner »

I am the event organiser of the pathfinder powerboat club annual dinner and decided to hold the event at the Royal beach hotel . From the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble for the staff at this lovely hotel . We had 80 guests at the dinner and the food served up was delicious and plentiful and the service was excellent . The Ark royal suite with its golden chandeliers and long drape curtains made for a lovely atmosphere for us to all dance the night away , special thanks go to Will from the events team who made sure everything was perfect for us . We will definitely consider this venue for any future events !

« A great place for a weekend with friends »

We came here for a reunion with old university friends. We do the same every year, and this was one of the best to date The hotel is well situated just a few yards from the beach and Southsea Common. You can walk for miles along the seafront and Portsmouth centre is easily accessed on foot or a short bus or taxi ride. The staff were excellent, courteous and always helpful. The dining and bar staff did not just serve the food and drinks, but went out of their way to meet our requirements. They were happy and intelligent enough to enter into the spirit of our things and share in the friendly banter that tends to take place on these occasions. The sea view rooms are excellent and very spacious. The bathrooms a little poky and dated, but we were told that there is a programme to update these. The food served in our function room was good, likewise in the bar where some of us stayed for Sunday lunch. So no complaints, nothing negative to say!

« Lovely But Needs Some Work »

I stayed one night at this hotel in November 2015. The hotel was pretty good for the price, although next time I will probably stay at a better hotel at higher price. The hotel is lovely! It probably has a long history but everything in UK has a long history. The lobby area is great for a beer in the evening. The breakfast was pretty good. The ladies at the front desk are the most friendly ones you can every find. The bed is comfortable and I had a great sleep. The room was quite. However the hotel is old! I stayed in a single room which definitely needs some renovation. The curtains only half close, and one of them fell off when I tried to close it. The shower & tub also need some major work.

    4
    « Afternoon tea »

We went today for my mother in laws birthday. For £9.95 a head the sandwiches on offer and the cakes were very good quality and well presented. Choice of tea or coffee however only two very small jugs of milk for 5 of us. We managed to get more however found it hard to get the staff members attention and the scowling member of staff I personally found spoilt the atmosphere slightly as made me feel very uncomfortable.

    « Wonderful stay »

We had 4 rooms and stayed 2 nights. We loved the old Victorian feel of the place. The front desk staff were very friendly. 2 of us had ocean views. Simply stunning. Positives: Coffee kettle in the room with biscuits. Comfortable beds. Breakfast buffet was wonderful. Negatives: We had dinner 1 night, it was ok. The first night was very quiet and lovely. Sadly, night 2 a birthday party was going on and the guests took up all of the parking. I believe the tiny car park should be reserved for guests actually staying at the hotel. The party was also very loud. Music thumping until midnight and the crowd outside was feeling very lively. I finally called the front desk at 12:45am and asked them to please do something. I would absolutely stay here again, but I'd try and find out if a party or wedding is planned first.

« Hotel room brought out of mothballs? »

There was no doubting the popularity of this traditional English seaside hotel when we found it was filled to the rafters with a naval reunion, a 'Co-op' conference, a square dancers 'hoe down' and a wedding on the weekend of our stay. But with such a full house, it's probably not suprising that someone was going to draw the short straw in regards to accommodation. Unfortunately it was my wife and I (staying independently of any of the above groups) who were allocated what must have surely been the worst room in the establishment. Room 419 reeked of stale cigarette smoke and, with congealed toiletries in the shower dispensers, gave every impression of having lain vacant since smoking was completely banned in such establishments. Seeking to supplement the warmth of our bed's duvet, we unwrapped a spare blanket with stains that are best left described simply as undescribable. Conscious of the futility of seeking a change of room on a fully booked Saturday night, we deferred our request for a change of room until the next morning. That was arranged, and on Sunday evening we arrived back to a room that could well have been in another hotel, such was the difference in quality. Also on the positive side was the ability of the hard-working staff to service the demands of a full house, including producing hearty bar meals in a timely manner while catering for multiple functions throughout the hotel.

    « Fantastic Sunday lunch »

Just popped in for sunday lunch as we live locally now, and quite often walk by. Well the bar where we had A drink before lunch was lovley, staff excellent and friendly. Went into the restaurant for lunch which was in A magnificent large room with chandeliers. Sunday carvery is excellent value and quality. Cold meats, pastas and salads for starters. Desserts had A great choice and even A cheeseboard. Great value for money and will definetly be back.

    1
    « Awful »

Just had Sunday carvery. Possibly the worst carvery I've ever had. Vegetables were cold, beef was dry, Yorkshire pudding couldn't be cut with a knife. Cabbage had been out so long it was pink from being kept warm. Creme caramel had split. Service was just disgraceful. We had to stack the dinner plates on top of each other because nobody cleared our starter plates or dinner plates so there was nowhere to put the dessert plates. Nobody asked if our meal was ok. Nobody asked if we wanted more drinks. I tripped on a temporary piece of carpet paced over the dance floor which had not been taped down. I've given it one star because I had to give it something, not worthy of any.

« Excellent - Warm Welcome, Great Value, Helpful Staff »

We stayed here for the Great South Run and were quite sad that we only booked in for the one night; we'd have loved to have stayed longer. This is a classic and classy hotel. Yes, it's a bit tired in places, but what would you expect of a beautiful old building like this. The position couldn't be better, the staff could not be friendlier or more helpful. Our room was large, clean and comfortable and everything worked the way it should. The breakfast was excellent and when we had trouble parking and wanted advice on where to eat out the staff went out of their way to help. Loved it ... We will return.

« Just the ticket splendid stay »

    « Nice place »

Great location, a very old hotel in need of a bit of refurbishment but nice all the same. It's little things uneven floor, cramped bathroom you need to take the loo roll of to use as impossible to reach round! We had a Queen Room sea view, really spacious room. Nice touches of proper mugs and biscuits! What was crazy the hotel had no Earl Grey quite ridiculous to say they had run out I would suggest house keeping needs words of advice about this!

« Great Hotel, Staff are a credit to the place ! »

Booked this hotel Last minute and we weren't disappointed, Good location, A proper British seaside Hotel, place was clean, Food was excellent especially the breakfast. The staff are a real credit to the establishment, Always there with a smile and an offer of assistance, nothing was too much trouble. Normally use the more corporate type hotels but we were so glad that we found this one, It's a great place, A real gem, we will definitely be back folks. Advise you try this place foy yourself, Don't be put off by the winger's and the skinflints !

    « A proper, solid, well-run hotel »

This isn't a trendy boutique hotel, but it's not meant to be. Instead it's a reasonably large and therefore spacious hotel with traditional elements to it. I really liked the wide corridors and grand staircase, the very friendly staff, the cosy bar that serves snacks at any time of day or night, and of course my room. Room 424 is at the back (or side perhaps) but I could still see the sea. It's a quiet room because it only has one neighbour. This double room was extremely spacious. The bathroom was big too, with a full-size window. Decor is starting to date a bit but everything was well maintained and clean. Toiletries and biscuits provided were just right. The bed was very firm. Only criticism really is that a couple of the rather rustic tiles in the bathroom were loose. Would stay here again.

    « A bit dated »

Opposite beach, buses outside the door to get to Portsmouth. Pier closed for refurbishment since 2014. Site next door has been demolished to make way for a McCarthy & Stone retirement home so building works may be started in the near future. Car parking is free but limited and tight. Room was a bit dated but very clean, En-suite was huge! Secondary double glazed meant room was quiet. Bed had a few dips but on the whole we had a good nights sleep. Tea and coffee in room and biscuits as well! Had a safe but unfortunately it didn't work. Ate in restaurant both nights as there is nowhere nearby. Very reasonably priced. Breakfast was excellent, all you could want. Must try the 10th hole tea rooms about half a mile from hotel. Turn left out of hotel along South parade into Eastern Parade on right hand side by pitch and putt. Cakes are fabulous!

« HMS Lowestoft & HMS Morecambe Bay Reunions »

Attended 2 different Ships reunions over Six days & luckily they were one after another, so no need to vacate room between reunions. This time we discovered when booking that this Hotel is now DOG friendly, what this means is that selected rooms are kept for dog owners & their pooch, the only restriction is that you only use 2 allociated seats in the Lounge ( the problem was here ,as they were not marked as such) & were taken by other guests although other tables were available. This needs sorting by the management as it was beyond the authority of the receptionist on duty. Other then this blip, the hotel rooms & services were first class, the Staff were very helpful & food for normal meals & the Reunion Dinners were exceptional (after 6 days of spoiling the pre Crimbo diet will have to "kick in". Wife reports in house magazine was best she'd read in a long time.A special mention must be given to the Lady who cleans the Brass work throughout the hotel .

    « Just ok »

This hotel is right on the beach at Southsea. Parking is very limited with height restrictions. It all seemed very expensive (maybe because I'm from up North). We could eat in the bar which wasn't really laid out for eating, ie low table etc. the food was fine but the ambiance wasn't I believe. Beer was expensive £3.85 for a pint unless you were there for happy hour but even then a pint would be more than half price. My room was large and comfortable but the aspect was a brick wall and window. There also seemed to be a drains smell in the bathroom, which is I guess why the maid left the bathroom window open

« Good value for the money »

The hotel is on the seafront and the rooms are clean but there is a bit of "jadedness" about it. The drinks are a bit pricey and although the breakfast was ok, the sausages and bacon were not of the best quality. /staff polite.

    « A Great Stay »

This has to be one of the best hotels I have stayed at. Alert though, it is considered to be in Portsmouth but is in Southsea about a kilometer or two from the centre situated right right across from the pier with a fine view of the Old Defense Martello towers in the Solent, and the Isle of Wight beyond them. After a friendly quick efficient check in and to my room on the second floor with a magnificent view of the waterfront. The large airy room had a very comfortable king sized bed, a real surprise for me as I had booked a single room! A full bathroom with huge tub and shower, all well plumbed. The evening meal in the bar was good, with quick and friendly service. The delicious breakfast was a huge buffet with everything one could wish for, elegantly presented in a large dining room overlooking the sea. All together a great night at a reasonable price.

    « Disappointing »

Had thought that at £150 a night for bed and breakfast, that a more peaceful evening would have been experienced. There were 2 reunions taking place and very noisy party guests on the saturday night yelling outside the hotel. The bar was full with no available seating, the car park had very limited parking for the size of hotel. It would have been helpful if this information had been available at the point of booking,.Will not be returning

« A hotel set on the front of Southsea overlooking the sea »

Here for two nights in mid September and upgraded to a sea view room overlooking the Pier and worth the money. Excellent views over the sea and promenade. Breakfast was excellent and the evening meal was also well presented and good choices at a reasonable cost, had a choice of bar or restaurant food both good.

    « Room without a view »

We stayed at this hotel as part of a Ship's Reunion booked via a reputable travel company. Sadly disappointed with room allocation despite booking months ago. The hotel was fully booked & although we asked for a room change, none were available. Double room we occupied could best be described as a single with a 4' bed, single wardrobe space already occupied with a safe, ironing board & an iron so no room to hang 3 X nights amount of clothing. Sheets & towels were clean & quality loo roll was provided. Food was mediocre but chefs were catering for large numbers. Advised to book a twin room and/or ask for a sea view next time. Won't happen as no intention of returning. I attach a photo of view from Room 123.

    « "nd fantastic Stay »

This is the second time we have had a 5 day stay at this hotel, (it was just as good this time (if not better if that can be!) The hotel is very clean, the staff are so helpful and pleasant and the choice of food is fantastic, I particularly like the buffet style for breakfast and dinner, we hope to return next year

« poor choice for independent travellers if a conference is taking place »

We booked a high floor sea view room via booking.com. We were allocated a first floor box room overlooking the car park as we had not used their own web site to book. There were 2 conferences taking place which ensured hotel was fully booked and restaurants were also full and very noisy. Food was acceptable if not good. The staff were very good The hotel should state size of rooms and charge less for small rooms.. Some way of warning independent travellers when the hotel is overrun with conferences would also be beneficial
