« Friday evening stay. Classy very clean excellent room. No complaints. First class all round. No complaints. »

Fantastic stay at a very comfy classy hotel. Bed was very comfy. Breakfast excellent. Swimming pool sauna steam room nothing more you could want for. Very friendly staff. Will definitely recommend. Hotel sorted taxi out and luckily there was a shortage but we were looked after.

The hotel was lovely, lots of character and is set in beautiful grounds. The staff were fab. Our room was lovely and the bed was huge and extremely comfortable. We shall definitely be going back for a long weekend.

« Not value for money »

We booked this hotel as a birthday weekend treat, minus the kids, to relax and enjoy, but left feeling disappointed. Easy to find, lovely setting and building. Arrived in the room, first appearance was good, but look more closely and furniture is dated and decoration tired. It was a cold day, the room was freezing as the radiators had been turned off. Due to high ceiling rooms, it took a while to warm up so we sat in coats before heading to the spa. On route we booked a table in the Henley Restaurant for 8pm. We enjoyed a swim and the Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. We had to ask for a list of the treatments available as none were on display and there wasn't a leaflet in the room either. This was provided from a draw on asking. Didn't follow up on treatments in the end. Headed back, Room finally warm, we got ready and went to the Inn, which was nice. When we got to the restaurant for 8pm, oh no, we were not on the list for dining??..the only table they could put us at was one set for 10. Hungry and nowhere else to go we accepted. We were offered a free drink, which I asked if the price of a free drink could be offset against a bottle of wine which we would order with food. No not possible, so ended up with more drink than actually wanted. We did get seated at table for 2 in the end and were amused to see other tables for 2 empty for the time we were there, so not sure what the issue was really. Looking forward to something nice to eat, as price would indicate that were going to get something good. If you want vegetables with your main, yes, you have to pay an extra £1.50. Starters arrived and had to ask for bread, which was cold. Then mains, I ordered the lamb and chorizo with vegetable side of carrot and snap peas. It came with mash and cabbage. Looked good, but way too much salt on all the veg and chorizo overpowered main dish, so disappointed. Husband had the fillet, but was not overly impressed. Desert raspberry tart, was ok, nothing special. Best bit was the orange and white chocolate ice cream that came with it. Disappointed £90s later?.So breakfast in bed ordered for 9am. Get to 9:15, no breakfast, so call reception who call the kitchen. Kitchen calls apologising saying be with us shortly. Tray with tea/coffee, cereal and toast arrives 9:30. Hot food arrives another 10 minutes later. I ask the guy who brought it up were we forgotten about. He said they were really busy downstairs and were waiting for food. I presume to be cooked. So cook enough to meet number of guest's springs to mind and a courtesy call to say it was delayed would have been nice. So we spent £240 overall for this one night stay, and I don't feel that what we got reflected the price.

« Lovely Historic Building in parts »

Stayed here for one night on business trip. Good points:- bed for very comfortable and the shower was excellent. restaurant food was lovely as were the staff. Bad points:- the hotel is very near a large school and when we arrived, there was nowhere to park, as the spaces seemed to be taken up by parents sat in their cars waiting for their children to come out of school !! some of the furniture in the bedroom had seen better days. Great building very historic in parts. Spa looked great but didnt get the chance to use it :(

    « So much potential »

I stayed at this hotel last year, when I wasn't overly impressed with Reception. So I am pleased to say that this time we were warmly welcomed by Lisa - who was friendly, efficient and helpful. We had a problem getting in the restaurant, which she resolved for us after some pleading. I agree with previous reviewer, restaurant staff could do with relaxing a bit. The room was very small, but the bathroom had been modernised and was much better than the bathroom in the room I had last year. We arrived in the dark, and were surprised next morning to see that our view was a brick wall. The tv was large and good quality. We asked for late checkout on Sunday, at 12 instead of 11, however the cleaners started hoovering the adjacent rooms from about 10am, which meant the lazy Sunday morning we were hoping for wasn't possible. We left at 10.30. Overall I would say this hotel is a bit average for a 4 star. There was nothing awful, but nothing that made us say wow either. The next evening we stayed at a comparable hotel in Kettering - it was head and shoulders above this hotel - the room was bigger, more tastefully appointed and had nice touches like fresh milk for tea. If I were Best Western I would give some attention to Thwaites hotels and learn from their model.

    « Definitely a plus »

I enjoyed my stay at the Orton Hall Hotel & Spa, the staff were helpful and knowledgeable. I did make use of the spa and can say that all areas including the changing room were clean and well maintained. I would stay here again if I am in the area.

    « Lovely Room »

My husband (wheelchair bound) and I have just had an overnight stay here. When I phoned to book our room, I spoke to a lovely helpful lady who asked if I would like to have dinner and breakfast included with the room rate, which I accepted. We stayed in a regular room rather than a disabled as the disabled only has twin beds - not sure why, as disabled people can be married and can want to share a bed with their spouse. The room we had was number 4, lovely and spacious, bed extremely comfortable, bathroom a little cramped but the bath was heavenly. The placement of the toilet roll holder was a little odd, so you had to twist behind you to reach the toilet paper. I had forgotten to pack my toiletries, so the reception desk provided complimentary toothbrushes and toothpaste, which was a nice touch. At 7pm we went down to the restaurant and was shown to our table, the menu we were given was different to the menu's shown to the guests that weren't on an inclusive package. We only had 3 or 4 choices of starters/mains/desserts which to be honest didn't really leave my husband and I much of a choice, as usually we wouldn't choose any of the options that we had. The meal was nice and the staff were attentive (I personally feel that the staff should try and relax a bit more as they seemed very stiff). If when reserving my room I had been told that the inclusive package meant a limited choice of food, then I would not have taken the inclusive - so I do feel that people should be warned about that on booking. My husband and I also went into the swimming pool - nice size pool - extremely small disabled shower/toilet area, we also didn't find a disabled changing room, so we ended up going back to our room in our towels to get changed. The pool itself was quite cold too, which meant we couldn't stay in for very long. We went into breakfast at around 9.30ish, the last orders taken for breakfast is at 10am and the restaurant closes at 11am. It is a buffet style with a hot station, toaster and bread, then juices, yoghurts, space for croissants/danish/muffins, cereals. You will notice that I said space for croissants etc as they had completely run out of them and when I asked a waiter if they could be refilled, I was told that they were frozen so no they couldn't. So if you want a choice for breakfast I suggest that you get there as soon as they open, otherwise you can only eat what is left. Having said that, they were refilling the hot station constantly.

    « weekend break »

We stayed for 2 nights the hotel is amazing. We ere initially put into a room that could interconnect with another. The sound proofing between the 2 rooms was bad however the reception staff had no problem moving us when we asked it wouldn't of been a problem only as a quiet couple put next to a pair of women that were no noisier than you would expect we could hear every word. The restaurant was superb we had a great meal. The quality of breakfast was also good. The spa facilities were exceptionally clean. A shame there were a lack of books in the Library bar

« yet another fantastic stay »

Great hotel with great staff pool and spa facilities. Lovely setting. We enjoyed a lovely evening meal, breakfast was delicious, the pool sauna and jacuzzi all were taken advanatage of - to have all this under one roof fantastic. I regularly stay here and always the same tip top service

« Great meal in the hunters restaurant »

We were a table of ten for a 65th wedding anniversary celebration. From the friendly greetings in the restaurant bar to the final farewells we received great service. The menu is extensive and the food was superb and well presented. The waiter willingly took group photos and presented the cake with due ceremony. The restaurant was comfortably warm on a very chilly evening, for which we were grateful. The veggie amongst us was very happy. The gluten free version of the menu was the best I have ever encountered and my choice far wider than usual. Thank you to all the staff who contributed to making sure this very special occasion was a great success.

    « Excellent »

Beautiful stately home set within lovely grounds. The rooms were spacious and the spa facilities (included in the price except treatments) were also good. The biggest surprise was the restaurant. The food and service was excellent. Every dish that we had was generous and faultless. We were even more surprised on departure to see that the evening meal as well as the breakfast was included in the price (with a surcharge for the alcohol and for the fillet steak dish). We will definitely be going back.

    « Amazing building »

I stayed 10 nights for work; the building and surroundings are amazing, and even if, especially in the reception area, needs some updating, the rooms where very beautiful, well kept and very clean. People at breakfast area were helpful and nice. In the reception, Lisa went out of her way to make me feel comfortable during my stay. I highly recommend it.

    « Fantastic place »

Me and my mates very often staying at Orton. Swimming pool, some rooms dog friendly, beautiful old building and park for walks. Food pricey and a bit rich for me, but my other mates like it)))) But, it's a nice pub next door. About £10 to city center, if you want to drink and not to drive. Recommended.

    « Phew it's hot! »

This hotel is pleasant enough. It's typical of hotels that use old Properties which must take a huge amount of upkeep and maintenance. Rather tired . We had a four poster room which was spacious and comfortable apart from being boiling hot ! We opened the windows as far as they would go but had to ask for a fan to keep the temperature bearable. The bathroom needed updating and was not in keeping with the room. The curtains worked well to keep out the light . The posts of the bed obstructed the view of the tv ! In the rest of the hotel the pool area was lovely with good changing rooms (also very warm but that's acceptable here!!) although possibly due to the ambient temperature the jacuzzi and pool didn't feel very warm. The gym by the way is rubbish- 3 treadmills/ cross trainers that I thought had been stacked to one side for storage -that was it!! I used the spa which was excellent - but be ware - you cannot charge treatments to your room as it is a separate company ! The layout of the hotel Is quite higgledy piggledy with a really poor bar area (which doesn't open until 7pm!) with no seating which served Guinness that was off and warm white wine . The dining room was very depressing in decor - very dated and tired- the staff however were very friendly and helpful , and the food was fine- nothing amazing . I would probably go again if in the area.

    « Faultless »

Excellent all round hotel and the Ramblewood pub next door, organised a reunion there with many of us staying overnight. Great location, excellent room staff very helpful and friendly. Feed back was excellent.

    3
« Overnight stay with dinner »

Large hotel, specialising in corporate and wedding functions - even has separate parking for those events. Room furnishings adequate, bathroom similar - but out dated. Hallway carpeting, especially staircases, need cleaning/renewing. Dining room very high ceiling (very old building) and atmosphere totally lacking. Staff willing but inexperienced and forgetful. Breakfast served to all guests (including large wedding party) in "cafeteria" like surroundings, with limited choices and small tables - and totally a "number" attitude to guests. Acceptable as a transit stop, but would not consider as a leisure destination.

    « An enjoyable stay »

Beautiful, picturesque building in tranquil grounds, with excellent service from very pleasant staff, and delicious food. What more could you ask? Only downside is that if you do not want to take advantage of the Spa or leisure facilities, you still have to pay more than for an average hotel.

« Great place to relax »

Beautiful old manor house with lovely rooms. All the staff were very helpful especially with our members of the group who were visually impaired. It is a dog friendly hotel with spacious grounds in which to exercise the dogs. The spa facilities were very good and relaxing. My vegetarian menu was extremely good as was the menu chosen by our group.

    « Good Hotel »

Nice hotel with good friendly staff and facilities, Met at the hotel for a reunion, we were all checked in to our rooms friendly and efficiently, my room was clean and well presented. We met in the bar as a large group and were well looked after with drinks and bar meal. All in all a nice hotel with good staff and facilities.

    « Pleasant Enough »

Visited this hotel in order to use the spa facilities. The room was very spacious and clean, The spa, pool and gym facilities were all ok. Didn't eat at the hotel as it was a set three course meal and we didn't want that much plus we walked round the hotel looking for the restaurant for a while and it was like a ghost town. We opted to go to the pub which is alongside the hotel instead. My only quibble would be that when your in the reception area its very uninspiring no background music or anything to give it a welcoming ambience, Plus there are no lifts and no one to help you with luggage should you be on the first floor.

« Beautiful hotel. Need more staff on reception? »

Attended function here yesterday Lovely setting, beautiful buildings and grounds. Inside it rambles a little but it's all nicely decorated and furnished.we were in the conservatory. Lovely old glass orangery type area. With lots of seating, more inside. Gets quite warm in the glazed area ,even on a chilly October afternoon. The function we attended was catered. Great variety of sandwiches, sausage rolls but even better bite sized cakes- chocolate cream pastries, raspberry cream pastries and mini scones.lots of tea and coffee. Staff in orangery lovely.Staff at reception all on phone and 10 or so of us had to wait before we were shown where to go for our function. Small complaint. Nb car park all on earth where we were, under trees.

« Lovely relaxing stay - Great Spa. »

A lovely experience, fantastic spa facilities, much better than Champneys having stayed there many times. Would certainly choose this hotel again. Cooked breakfast was brilliant. There was a wedding on when we stayed but the rooms are well sound proofed and we enjoyed our stay. Huge grounds to walk the dog. Pet friendly. Def recommend to all.

« Saturday night saved by the barmen! »

We had a lovely spa break here. The food in the restaurant was beautiful - a real treat. Service in the restaurant was great too. Two particular members of staff, Luke and Ryan, really stood out as being friendly, helpful and offering excellent levels of customer service. We really felt for them as their hard work seemed to go unnoticed by their manager. The way he spoke to them (in front of customers) on several occasions was, in our opinion, completely unacceptable. Breakfast was a mixed bag - the food was nice but service dire. Food constantly running out on the buffet and when it did arrive there was a 5 minute wait for plates! All in all a good stay, made into an excellent stay by Luke and Ryan. ??

    « Wedding fantasia »

Came to stay for one night as my Goddaughter was married at a church in the village then we came here for the reception and the evening bash. The hotel was wonderful, the staff were friendly especially Laura, Katie and Rob, plus the cleaner on Sunday 4th September (can't remember her name) was sweeping the never ending leaves swimming into the reception area every time the door opened. She was so cheerful about it, I would have said Oh no stuff it. My friend had taken me there in her car as I was really too unwell to go on my own, our room was a twin room en suite and was more like a hotel reception as it was so large and comfortable, the beds were also comfy. The reception dining room was beautifully laid out and the food yummy. In the evening there was a stand with loads of kids sweets laid out in bowls with small bags so that you could pop a few in. I had to go up to it several times as one of our oldest in the family decided she would like a bag full, then everyone else expected me to go and get them some, tho I didn't forget my self. On the Sunday morning the staff were as fresh as daisies, serving us coffee and tea, the food was laid out very well, many of the things I couldn't eat but my GP had given me the weekend off from my low potassium diet so I made my way to the mushrooms abso delish. Wonderful stay will come here again even without the wedding. Thanks Orton Hall Hotel and Spa for making the experience exceptional.

    « Conference visit »

Stayed a week for a conference, facilities for this were just fine. The staff were very helpful for this too. The food was great, though I personally did not like the spa area. The swimming pool only has enough space for two persons to swim lengths and as they have outside members, it was always quite busy.

    « Stay for Wedding »

Excellent choice. We used our Tesco vouchers to stay here for a family wedding and were not disappointed. Fabulous hotel and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We have stayed at the Hotel before but this time we decided to include Breakfast and use the facilities available. The location is superb and we were able to find our way around very well. Very close to all amenities. Ideal if you are visiting the showground for an event.

    « No dinner! »

This was our first night away since having a baby so we really wanted to make the most of our stay and enjoy a nice meal and bottle of wine. However upon arrival the meet and greet was very poor at reception. Then we wanted to book dinner and we were told that there was no tables available in the restaurant but they did in the diner. However upon visiting the diner they had a sandwiches for vegetarians and the "proper" vegetarian meals are in the restaurant. This meant us driving out to find somewhere else to eat which was a real disappointment. The spa was nice as we were the only ones in there but you need £1 for the locker. Not mentioned anywhere so we had to walk back to our room to get some money. Breakfast was a buffet affair and ok but nothing special. The room was nice which was a saving grace although the water did run hot and cold which meant you had to do a bit of a dance in the shower. We did complain to a nice receptionist (this time) and were told that the manager reads the complaints list every day. Obviously a lot of complaints. However upon checkout the other receptionist asked us if everything was ok and we had to repeat the fact it wasn't. We never did hear from the manager either. Overall perhaps we are being a bit picky that we couldn't dine in the restaurant but I've not actually stayed somewhere that has not had space available for guests. For us this was a romantic weekend away and it was sadly spoiled so we can only rate it on that basis. I'm sure had we been given a nice greeting and been able to have food in the hotel it would have been completely different. For us the score is only poor but I would suggest if you are staying here then you book your table with your reservation.

    « Great Overnight Stay »

Very nice hotel. Good value for the money. Plenty of free parking. Staff was courteous, friendly, and professional. Room was clean, well decorated, and the bed extremely comfortable. The on premise restaurant served delicious food. Although we didn't use the spa/pool, it did appear to be well maintained and clean.

    « Fantastic stay »

Stayed here for our wedding anniversary and was not dissapointed. Check in was very easy and the staff were very helpful. We booked a superior room and it was huge. it was very clean and had everything we required. We made full use of the spa which has fantastic facilities. It wasn't very busy seeing as it was a Saturday afternoon. There was a wedding on whilst we were there but you dont really notice as the weddings have their own area. We ate at the Huntley restaurant that night. Quite surprised when we walked in as there were only two other couples in there. We were a bit apprehensive a first but when the food came it was fantastic. We were quite surprised that not more people were eating in there. We had a drink in the onsite pub that night as well. As many other people have said it doesn't have any character but is OK for a quick drink as long as you have good company. We had breakfast in bed the next day which was very standard but nice. We walked around the grounds on Sunday morning which there is a lot of. There is an nice little church on the site as well. We would definitely recommend this hotel and would definitely stay again.

« Great venue poor service »

I stayed here overnight, the room was great although a superior rating. Check in was smooth and swift - I inquired about room service - no problem I was told. On return from a wedding nearby I was informed of the late night options for food. Then rebuffed due to no card pre-authorisation being taken at check in (I wasn't asked). No problem - I could pay on delivery - but no - that wasn't an option apparently. They could make the food but not sell it to me. Totally ruined an otherwise pleasant stay. Seems like they have operational issues and misguided customer service. Breakfast was good leaving a better impression on check out.

    « Dissapointed »

I booked this Hotel after staying in a few Best Western before , thought it quite expensive for £245.00 2 nights bed and breakfast , room nothing special although bed comfortable i could nit pick about little things but my gripe was breakfast very dissapointed from coffee to dirty milk jugs and cups and choice on offer. On looking around it felt like it needed a good deep clean. We ended up without a decent cup of coffee and decided to leave straight away to find somewhere nice and clean to have a nice drink before starting off the on our journey. Will not return or recommend.

    « Reunion with friends »

We stayed here midweek to meet friends and family, the reception was good and the room on the ground floor was fine. The corridor outside the room had a real musty smell which was a bit off putting but the room was fine. Bed was comfy and the breakfast was really nice although the service was a bit slow. We ate an evening meal in the pub in the grounds of hotel and the food was ok for pub food, I think they are linked? Lovely grounds and a great park just opposite. All in all a positive couple of days.

« Not up to usual standard »

As a Diamond member I stay here often. I was told the hotel was full and that I could not be upgraded. I was not entirely happy with my room which was an accessible room and I do not have this particular need. I was not informed about the room category on check in and as I am tall, using the sink, which is targeted at wheelchair users, was a chore. My colleague stayed in room 1 and this room had an unpleasant foisty smell which was so bad, she had to be rehoused in a different room. This means that the hotel was not in fact full as reported and that I did not have to be given an accessible room at all. I was woken up at 4.20am by noise in the corridor. The breakfast is of good quality. The best part of the stay was the attentive service of the restaurant staff during dinner. This is always reliable and the food is of excellent quality.

    « Nice time »

We have just got back from this Hotel. We found the reception staff to be extremely helpful. The housekeeper was very kind and even lent us an umbrella for our mother as it was in the car and the weather was awful. Our room was very clean and a nice size. ( room 14) We asked for the free dressing gowns which were delivered straight away. I found the bed to be very comfortable. My husband used the Spa and said it was good. I thought the breakfast had enough variety and easily found something to eat. I would have liked to eat in the restaurant but my mum can be fussy and would not have eaten the food. We ate at The Beefeater up the rd and the food was nice.

    « Lovely »

We stayed with friends for an anniversary. We had a lovely large 4 poster room. It was rather noisy due to a wedding which was a shame. The spa and pool were a real treat. The on site pub was a great idea we enjoyed sitting in the sun having a drink. The staff were attentive and as requested when we booked remembered to sit us at a window table in the restaurant. Breakfast was lovely though they did run out of a few things which took a while to top up. Overall a lovely stay and we would go back .

Stayed on business and was pleasantly supplied by the hotel, it had character and was inviting. The staff were helpful & couldn't do enough. The grounds were well kept & rooms were clean, tidy & quite big. I'd stay again if in the area.

« Disapointed with poor standards, Best Westerns Standards have really dropped »

A disappointing 2 nights stay at this hotel. The food was diabolical, the breakfast, a slight improvement on the first day however 2nd day the food was cold, they had run out and buffet cheese's etc were warm. I had an upset stomach later in the morning. Majority of the staff were ok but a minority were very rude and hostile especial in one practical department, this has been report to the hotel but no formal action has been taken so it makes me wonder how good their customer care really is. The security in the evening was a concern, I had issues with my room key and when I return to the reception they had gone a sleep in the reception was in darkness, anyone could have got in to the hotel especial in these times. The rooms were ok however very hot at night with a small fan provided no air conditioning, I feel these will be more pleasurable in a cooler time of year. The rooms had working space with internet what was useful when business is a reason of stay. Bathroom was adequate however, the showers in the spa were a lot more better in being more powerful holding a consistent temperature.. The hotel has a gem and that was the leisure club and spa the place was a lot cleaner than the hotel and the staff were very good, the swimming and spa facilities were a pleasure to use. I have stayed at other Best Westerns and I feel this is nowhere near the standards of other I have stayed at.

We stayed here for a friend's wedding. When booking about 6 months ago we were told that we could book in at 12 so we could get ready as the wedding was at 2pm. 5 days before the event the groom was asked to ring everyone as due to another wedding the previous day the rooms would not be available. We had to break off from the wedding photos to book in. The room was ok but the matress sagged in the middle with roll together. On exiting the washroom the next day I was confronted with a guy painting the windows: we were on the second floor. The room smelled of paint so on the way out we left the windows ajar to vent the room. On our arrival back a few hours later the net curtains were stuck to the window frame. Papers ordered on arrival did not materialise and on enquiring at reception no ordering of daily papers could be found. Breakfast found under cooked bacon and sausages, lack of eggs and beans etc was not rectified for ages. Tables were not cleared and our table rapidly ran out of room for more tableware. I will not be recommending this venue to anyone who asks. Also, grounds maintenance seems to be sadly lacking with many over growing hedges and lack of weeding.

Stayed here, in the 4 poster room which was quaint and ok WIFI ok, nice meal in the restaurant and good value, staff friendly, breakfast was ok but can be expensive if not part of a package. Came out to find car covered in ..the white stuff and I mean covered, so stop and enjoy the hotel but just seriously consider where you leave your car, otherwise on leaving you will be looking for the nearest car wash. Pub next door which is part of the hotel has no atmosphere.

I Visited orton hall for a short business trip. Nice hotel, good room and bed and facilities, good breakfast, unfortunately the dinner at the hotel restaurant was not so good, staff made me think of fawlty towers. Nice surroundings. Swimming pool

Nice lay out to this hotel with well maintained grounds check in was quick and room was a good size, Nice comfortable bed with a seating area and good size TV. Bathroom was also of a good size.Wedding breakfast was very good with good food and service, Bar was a bit pricey but drinks selection was good with nice seating areas.Morning breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold food but service could be a lot better we had to ask for orange juice to be replenished then had to wait for sausages and bacon then back at the table had to ask for coffee three times. This is one of the reason for only giving a 4 the other being our room had a damp musty smell that we only noticed at midnight when we returned after the wedding to tired to complain just needed our bed.

« Good, but the spa rules/staff let it down »

Me, my 11 year old daughter and her nana stayed mon- Friday , nice hotel. staff friendly in the pub and bar staff in Hotel. A couple of the breakfast services were quite unorganised - food items not replenished, some staff not doing much just talking to children in the dinning room rather than keeping supplies and tables in order. Rooms good although on first floor we had the smell of the kitchen fryers. We tried to have morning swim at 8.15am but were told that children not allowed in until 9am, I explained that my daughter just wanted to do lengths not mess about, as she is trained life saver but the spa staff member insisted that it was not possible ( even though only 2 people in the pool!) She suggested we had breakfast then returned after 9 ! Really not good advice ? This meant we had to return each day early from day trips to get use if the pool before the 6pm ban. How strange that children if any age are allowed in the hot tub, sauna and steam room ?? On last morning we went in at 9am and the spa staff started scrubbing the floors around the hot tub, steam room etc ? Why would the cleaning be done at this time and not when closed ? Good location for days out. Hotel Clean and housekeeping good. We were not asked upon check out for feedback on our stay.

    « Would recommend »

Had a one night spa break with my two daughters and it was a very positive experience. The hotel is in a lovely setting and the staff were very friendly accommodating us in a room the easily fitted three single beds. The food we had for the evening meal was exceptionally good and I was also really pleased with the quality of the breakfast. The spa experience was good although the changing and relaxation rooms could do with more regular checks by staff as they were littered with discarded towels and cups which was rather off putting. This was a shame and the fault of the customers and not the staff. Would certainly recommend

Stayed at this hotel for our niece's wedding on 12th & 13th August. Beautiful hotel and friendly staff. Breakfast was lovely with cold and hot buffet. Staff were good, in peticular Daisy. She was so lovely nothing was too much trouble genuinlely friendly and helpful. The bedroom was spacious clean and comfortable. Spa facilities were perfect large spotless pool, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Fitness centre also but didn't use. The building is breathtaking with lovely grounds. We sat in the pub attached to the Hotel the first evening which was nice. The only negative comment would be we couldn't use our mobile phones anywhere in the Hotel due to no signal. This was a problem as family were on different floors so we couldn't contact each other to check arrangements etc. However the wedding was amazing and the food excellent.

« Beautiful old Manor House with exceptional staff »

We stayed here overnight with friends while visiting the Nene Valley Railway. The hotel grounds are beautiful. It would have been good to have had a walk around the grounds but there was a lot of other things on offer. We had room 12. This was facing the back of the hotel with pleasant views. The room was very nicely decorated and had a large bathroom. The room was extremely quiet and relaxing. We slept extremely well and would recommend it. The pool and other facilities in the spa were good. My only minor gripe were the sun loungers. Some of the cushions looked quite grubby. Breakfast was good. Buffet breakfast I am not a huge fan of, but they made fresh poached eggs for me and veggie sausages for our friends. Once again the staff couldn't do enough for us. We ate in the Huntly restaurant in the evening. Our expectations were quite high as it has 2 rosettes. Unfortunately it didn't quite make the mark. The food was ok, but I'm not sure it was worth the £30 price for 3 courses. I would definitely stay again as despite the evening meal, we really enjoyed our stay.

« Lovely place to stay »

The hotel is so well situated, next to the Nene Valley Country Park, that it would be difficult to find a better setting. Comfort and cleanliness are key. The staff are all welcoming and efficient and the food, in both restaurant and pub is excellent. Altogether, a delightful place to stay. If you happen to be a steam train fan then make for the Nene Valley Railway.

    « Wonderful relaxing time »

This is our second stay at this hotel this year, the hotel is in a peaceful setting amongst trees, the bed was very comfortable and we slept very well both nights with no noise to disturb us. It was a special weekend and enjoyed all the facilities particularly the leisure club and the restaurant was very efficient and well run, thankyou for a memorable weekend

    « Average »

Stayed here for 1 night with my partner . For £80 per night I thought the price was very reasonable. The room 106 was large with a huge king size bed. Bathroom and decor a little dated but everything else was ok . I have given it 3 stars as unfortunately the reception staff let it down . I found them to be very rude and unhelpful . Not a good first impression of the hotel . This needs to be addressed . On a more positive note we had an excellent Al la carte meal in the restaurant of the hotel . Beautiful dining room and excellent waiting staff . A young gentleman and a Middle Aged lady . Both exceptional , very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was cooked very well and we really enjoyed our meal. Perhaps the reception staff should watch and learn from the restaurant staff ?? All in all for the money it was ok but reception team really need to learn about good customer service

    « Romantic Getaway »

We booked a four poster bedroom. The hotel and grounds are beautiful. Reception staff were uninterested and unhelpful. There was a lovely set of tea and biscuits waiting for us when we finally got in. (After following wrong directions given by reception staff) The shower curtain and tiles were dirty, it doesn't take much to spray a bit of mould spray and put a curtain through the wash so seemed a bit lazy. We requested a newspaper that wasn't delivered. Called them and they said it hadn't been delivered so promised a different paper. None arrived, called them again, promised again paper would come... By check out nothing had arrived so we checked out. The spa facilities are wonderful, and staff within the spa so accommodating and friendly- complete opposite of reception staff. Hotel is so nice, could be an amazing place with the right people. I would go again as it was very cheap, bedroom and spa were lovely -just don't expect any service from reception.

« Staff need to go the extra mile »

Great building, nice big rooms, lovely grounds, clean and well maintained. However the staff need to go on a hospitality course. I asked if it was possible to get into the fitness room before 7:00 am as I had a full day on and was informed that we would have to wait for the maintenance person to open up. Having waited around for 15 minutes the maintenance man showed up and started to open the doors at 6:35 am the reception lady pointed out that I would like to use the treadmill. The maintenance man didn't even give me the courtesy of eye contact it was a gruff "no!" "opens at 7" and disappeared into the Spa. What brilliant customer service...Not. The fun continues, the day after, on arriving in London I checked to find my business pants where not in my case. Thinking back I recalled hanging them in the closet at Orton Hall so I rang to check. The reception advised they would ask housekeeping to check and ring me back. Obviously it was not an urgent matter to them. They did however ring me back to advise they had checked and they were not there. During the morning I racked my brains and was certain I had left them in the closet in Orton Hall. This was now a crusade for me. I rang back and stated adamantly that they were left in the room. I would hang on while they re-checked. This time they came back and said oh yes they were there. I was certain that asking them to post them on would be such a overwhelming task for this team I decided to drive back up to Peterborough and retrieve them. The staff at this hotel need to learn more about hospitality and how to go the extra mile. Some of them at least have a problem going the extra millimetre. Nice surroundings alone do not make a good hotel. Staff need the right attitude. Won't be returning.

I stayed here with my husband for my birthday treat. We had excellent service in the Hotel. Our room was amazing with a fantastic four poster bed. A good meal in the pub and a lovely time in the SPA with a massage each. a great stay all round. Thank you.

Was a very nice hotel the room was nice and good level of cleanliness. We didn't use the restaurant so don't know about the food standards. Only bad thing was there said they had travel cots but on arrival all available ones were out and the other were broken.

    « Brief Stay »

I chose this hotel based on its location for an overnight stay. Arriving late (after midnight) I was greeted by a cheerful night porter who got me to the right room. Room was very comfortable with large TV and all the amenities you would expect. Wifi works well in the room. Overall, it was brief but pleasant. Also, very well placed for golf and driving range

« Lovely hotel, lovely location »

We booked this hotel through Tesco Clubcard and were not disappointed. The location is lovely tucked away from the main road and only a short bus ride from Peterborough, where there are also plenty of carparks. The staff were friendly, the room very good and the breakfast excellent. We have never been disappointed with Best Western Hotels.

« Spacious room and good leisure facilities »

The hotel is about a 10 minute drive from Peterboroughs town centre. There is a pub in the grounds of the hotel which offers more informal dining. As the hotel is an old house the room had a high ceiling giving a feeling of space. It was decorated traditionally and was very clean with a lovely bathroom. Yes if you look carefully you will find a few cracks - as to be expected with an old building but I thought it a lovely alternative to corporate modern hotels. The miny gym has 4 pieces of equipment and I liked the pool too. Reception staff were professional and helpful. Only breakfast prevented a higher rating which while absolutely fine the cold buffet would benefit from a few more items eg better range of breads, Greek yoghurt. I'd certainly use the hotel again when in Peterborough.

    « Tired & Dated, poor staff »

This hotel is massively overpriced for the tired & dated rooms. Our room had a stain on the carpet, the shower head threatened to fall down on touch & the furniture was broken. That said, it was a spacious room & very clean. The stay could have been better if the staff were more professional. Reception weren't welcoming on arrival. At breakfast (which was good) we were surrounded by staff clearing away 30 mins before breakfast ended talking and moaning loudly about their work. I was left just wanting to get the hell out of there. Nothing worse than unprofessional staff. Spa facilities were good other than the threadbare towels they provide you with - take your own. I'm not actually one to complain normally but this hotel has had really good reviews and either I stayed in a different hotel or I was just unlucky !!

« spa treatments and spa centre - poor unfriendly service »

My friend and I were so looking forward to this treat, and to find somewhere local and convenient for a regular 1/2 day visit with treatments. Imagine our disappointment when we were greeted by an unfriendly and abrupt spa receptionist. Initially we put this down to a one off. However, when greeted for our treatments by Natasha and colleague the reception couldn't have been ruder. There was no friendly engagement, no welcoming, in fact it was very much like they didn't want us there and we felt extremely uncomfortable. It is such a shame as the facilities (bar a required improvement of cleaning in the changing facilities) the steam room, pool. sauna and rest room would be ideal for a regular visit. Never have I known such an unfriendly team. It did appear they may have had a team 'falling out' and unfortunately that translated into : no smiles, a curt tone, no engagement. I wasn't even spoken to when my treatment had finished. Just realised when the massage stopped that she was washing up the other side of the room, like being sent to coventry. Absoultely shocking. Would never return even if free

Lovely room, quite small, but with a view over the church & churchyard. Fixtures and fittings good as expected from a Best Western (but not standard in all Best Westerns!). Reception staff lovely, cheerful and helpful. Shower pathetic, stood for ages trying to rinse the conditioner out of my hair. Fixed wire internet connection for no extra charge - excellent.

« A central Place to meet in England »

We have used this hotel on many occasions as a central meeting place in England for friends and family to get together from various parts of the UK. The hotel has managed to meet all our requirements in a friendly way such that we plan a bigger get together in 2017

    « disappointed »

the best thing was the spa center, which is what we went for. Hotel was nice old building but facilities very old needs renovation. Breakfast very poor for the price and the staff not very nice. We had a mistake in the reservation hence the lady at reception insisted we pay 12.5 pounds for 1 extra breakfast as reservation was single person in room but we were 2. However the breakfast just would merit 5 pounds! Poor quality of products.. In addition internet in rooms extremely poor. The hotel needs renovation, rooms and reception area very old.

« Slightly tired property with inappropriate modern extensions redeemed by offering good value for money »

The rooms are clean and even the budget priced accommodation was a decent size with good toiletries. Sadly the architect should have looked more carefully at how people actually use hotels - the reception area is actually the rear of the hotel and the most elegant parts are miles away from this. While asking for an early check in was met with a willingness to help not a lot happened and looking for a drink and some lunch we were directed to the neighbouring pub which was not what was wanted at all - slot machines and an uninspiring menu which owed little to the chef but much to the freezer.

« Lovely hotel in its own grounds »

The Orton Hall Hotel is a lovely hotel built around a core of the old Orton Hall building. I use this hotel for business meetings and it is a beautiful old building at its heart with modern, tasteful extensions and decorating added to the property. We have eaten in the "pub" bar and the main hotel restaurant and both are very good. Pleasant and helpful staff as well as good range of choices on menus. Rooms are well appointed and beds comfy. New showers provide excellent bathroom facilities. There is a pool and a spa. Parking is plentiful and the only issue can be finding your way around a maze of corridors but this is part of the character of the place. Good value for money and a great nights sleep at a really quiet and peaceful hotel.

    « Orton Hall - Warts 'n All »

Over all a good hotel with quiet rooms and comfy beds. The photos can be a bit deceiving and the hotel is certainly not as picturesque upon arrival (reception area move crossroads motel than stately home), but a wander around the grounds and inside is a pleasant surprise The Spa was busy with many parties having treatments, but certainly enough space to splash around in the pool. The only fault was that service in the hotel was a little sporadic, requests for tea and coffee took some arranging (generally the younger staff were more cortious and attentive) and the bar wasnt staffed until later in the evening Although scored as average (3 points), I would say it's good, but not worthy of 4 point category

    « 50/50 »

I really really want to like this hotel - and I'm trying. Thoughts based on my experience so far: Good bits - Nice quiet setting. Sat in my room now and haven't heard a sound for hours. A quiet hotel is worth a lot of money in my opinion - Massive room, though a little dated. Imacculate with an iron and trouser press, no shortage of space at all. Nice bathroom too. - Receptionist is lovely and greeted us with a warm smile and nice welcome on arrival. She was keen to help. - The staff in general are very professional, pleasant and polite - I can't emphasise that enough. - Free WiFi - Restaurant and bar on site Bad bits - The main bar/restaurant was an absolute nightmare. There were clearly not enough staff, and we had to go and ask someone to take our order after 15min of sitting with menus. The girl was very apologetic but had been putting glasses away only a minute before. Starters took about a month to come out and it wasn't even that busy. The waitress then asked if we were done while one of our party was still holding and munching a chicken wing. Mains then appeared instantly and were tasty but over priced. Empty plates were there for another month before someone took them, then desserts took another 3 weeks to come out (but were very good). Food was generally well presented. Overall the impression was that they need a floor manager and another chef. - I went to the library bar after dinner only to be informed that there was no gas so all beers were off. I had to go all the way back next door to get one only to bring it a back through. The barman was very apologetic and embarrassed about this, and I heard him raising it with reception on my way back through. It's nice that the staff are so polite but surely the gas is checked at the start of a shift? Apparently not. - WiFi constantly dropping out from my room - A room down the hall had left their eaten meal plate/tray outside their room around 7pm. I just got back to my room at 11pm and it's still there. In short, it's a nice quiet hotel and it's clean. But it seems to be lacking management and/or resource which is letting it down. Restaurant staff are lovely but need to pay a bit more attention to what's going on around them as people's empty plates are being left for way too long (not just ours). But for a nice clean quiet stay you won't be disappointed. Perhaps just go down the road to the pub for dinner instead.

    « Just ok »

Check in - not great - although we were given basic directions to room, no details re breakfast or restaurant were provided - not particularly friendly or helpful reception. Room - ok - nice courtesy tray, all mod cons - We ate in the Ramblewood Inn - it was very nice - friendly helpful staff & good food. We ate breakfast in the Huntly Restaurant - not good - fried eggs like bullets - been there for hours - no fresh fruit - toast served at the table over cooked & dried out - they really need to drag themselves into the 21st century

« School run mum's ruined the atmosphere »

Booked a spa half day for me and my partner for his birthday, we were looking forward to a quiet morning having treatments and then relaxing in the spa. The salon staff were fantastic, the treatments were outstanding. However when we returned to the spa about 10am a large gang of school run mums (literally about 20 of them) had descended, they spent the whole morning hogging the jacuzzi and the steam room so our peaceful, restful morning was ruined by having to listen to their very loud gossiping and cackling and not being able to use half the facilities. We ended up leaving early as we couldn't take it anymore.

    « Comfortable intriguing hotel »

At first glance this hotel looks a little shabby. The reception area, which has been tacked on at some point, is not really in keeping with the rest of the historical hotel. A tack-on is understandable but it could have been done more elegantly. The lounge area could have done with more finesse. There are lots of comfy sofas, but the cushions had not been plumped and so it gave it its air of shabbiness. The Ramblewood Inn is definitely lacking in atmosphere. The lighting is canteen like and again decor is shabby. The bedroom was old-fashioned. However, once you settle in the hotel's charms appear. The spa pool area is tidy, clean and attractive. Some of the public rooms are charming and the general quirkiness of the buildings grows on you. The Inn staff were friendly and attentive and the food was plentiful and well presented. The bedroom had everything that was required and the bed was comfortable. The grounds are well-kept and good for a stroll. I struggled to think it was four star, probably more three star, but if you want a comfortable stay it's a good place.

« Comfortable hotel in historic building and set in lovely ground »

We only stayed for one night but will definitely return - next time to try out the spa facilities. The restaurant is very good and so was fully booked during our stay. Breakfast was very good and the staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. Sadly, certain items (kippers/omelettes etc) required additional ££s in what is quite an expensively priced hotel. Lots of places to lounge and have coffee inside if the weather is inclement, with lots of space outside for sunnier days. The adjacent pub was pleasant - if pricey but spoilt by noisy, sweaty blokes with little regard for youngsters in the dining area. Staff might have had a word.....

    « A very good weekend »

We had 2 very good nights in this well presented hotel. The room was spacious, clean, airy with 3 windows with a pleasant view and well decorated. the only flaw in the bathroom was a crack in the hand basin, now I am being picky as it was very clean and roomy. We arrived late on the first night and the main restaurant was fully booked so we ate in the attached Ramblers restaurant. Although I expected a pub meal with pub service I was surprised by the quality of the food and service. A special mention is required for the staff, from cleaner to DM. They were all friendly, chatty if you wanted them to be and very helpful. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Just on the outer edge of the grounds is The Holy Trinity church with a 13th century carving of the Baron De Longueville . Please visit and make a donation to keep this jewel shining. Altogether a very satisfactory weekend in a historical hotel.

« Over priced pretentious lay cafe menu. »

Hotel room okay'ish, beautiful settings, ambassadorial staff a credit to the hotel. My biggest observation was with such a large hotel being fully booked, why were the two restaurants practically empty at a peak dining time. I had a table booked for 5 adults in the "pub" restaurant The Tumbledown, no justification for charging £13 for a burger, bar prices were also outrageous, a pretentious menu of cheap ready meals, but charging high end prices, we left the restaurant and walked 100 yards up the road to a Brewers Fayre pub, that was heaving with diners, the reason, hotel guests from the Orton hall were prepared to wait an hour for their 2 meals for a £10. Five us spent £57 for drinks and meals, the equivalent in the Orton Hall would have been £136. Walk 100 yards save £80. There is your completion Orton Hall.

    « Quaint country hotel »

Stayed for one night on a business trip. Decor dated, however the rooms and bathrooms are very clean and spacious. No elevators, so beware if you're on the second floor and have heavy luggage! Felt really sorry for our porter. Very quiet with beautiful grounds. Had dinner at the adjacent pub - food fair. Breakfast selection was standard but quality good. Looks to be a good venue for conferences and weddings.

My Husband and I have just recently left this hotel with friends, we stayed for 1 night over the weekend and although there was a wedding on the day we stayed, the staff were very helpful, our rooms where ready as soon as we got there, and we were in rooms away from the wedding so the noise was not distrubing.

    « Magnificent »

Wow where do I start? My son and now daughter in law got married here on 1/4/16 the venue was absolutely perfect from pulling up to leaving two days later there was nothing to find fault with, the hotel was immaculate, the grounds were pristine the food was amazing and the beds were so comfortable it would have been easy to stay in bed all day. The wedding party consisted of 90 ish people and at least 60 guests spent one or two nights at Orton hall and a great time was had by all. The staff are extremely helpful and curtious ( with the exception of the chef!!!) I would most certainly go there again and try out the spa facilities and walk round the grounds. The pub joined onto the hall is fantastic and the food there is delicious and plentiful .

    « In transit »

We stopped one night on our way south. The room was clean, bright, but a long way from reception bar etc. There was no lift. The Restaurant was fine dining, good varied menu, and friendly service. I enjoyed it, but thought the wine list a bit pricey. There was the alternative of bar food in the onsite pub. The grounds were lovely, little church, many old trees , rabbits squirrels and birds. I would return.

    4
    « Great location »

As usual I was given a very nice and tidy room , very happy with my stay would go there again and recommend it for a short break as it set in beautiful grounds. Even the bar / pub next door are very pleasant and the food is great, I had a beef sandwich and was surprised with the quality.

    4
    « Mostly Great »

The difference between a good Hotel and a great one is the 'Little things'. There is nothing really wrong with this Hotel, but it lets itself down on a few issues that could easily be rectified: Don't serve warm White Wine in the restaurant Do have separate water glass Don't hand guests 'empty' menus Do clean the water egress around the pool (lots of mould) Don't ignore the clients as they pass the reception (Greetings: Good Morning, etc) Do something about the sudden massive changes in water temp (Partner was scalded in shower) Don't leave the SPA reception unattended (Guests standing around in bathrobe) Do, please, please do something about the grounds. They should be something other than a mass of weeds

« Great location, dog-friendly hotel, big rooms »

We always stay here when we visit family in central Peterborough. The location is fantastic for the dog - there are nice short walks in the grounds and great runs along the riverbank, which is just a few minutes away. The dog-friendly rooms are often at the side of the hotel, quite a distance from reception, which is good because you can park the car much closer to your room in the courtyard parking, not under the trees in the main carpark. Food is fine of a fairly pub-grub kind. We always have room service breakfast because of the dog - delivery is not 100% reliable but they always rectify mistakes quickly. Good wifi. Comfortable beds and friendly staff.

    « A pleasant one night stay »

Stayed here as my son was in a local Triathlion . Check in was excellent by Donna. There was a wedding and we had requested a quiet room but had been allocated a room near the celebration . However Donna was most helpful and pleasant and changed both our rooms. The rooms were a little dated but of a good size, clean with coffee/ tea and toiletries. We were going to eat in the pub but after going there due to noise and children we decided to eat in the main restaurant. The food was good and well presented but the staff were unusual! The breakfasts were good and afternoon tea.

« Orton Hall Hotel & Ramblewood Inn, »

The hotel in some areas needs redecoration. The rooms are OK, but cleaning and mold issues need dealing with. The hotel staff could do with retraining to ensure they greet people and explain fully the arrangements of the hotel for a first time visitor. The breakfast staff although numerous have a mixed approach on service quality, that needs addressing. The Ramblewood Inn dining area is in need of change, but the food is good and staff are better at service.

« Short Break Orton Hall »

Convenient for Peterborough and close to road and rail networks. Visited with a group of 20 friends for a long weekend. This is an hotel with plenty of character but also able to deliver modern services. Quality of food was particularly good, the bedroom was comfortable and general hotel facilities good with plenty of areas to sit and relax. There is a pub in the hotel grounds which offers a wide range of beers etc..

    « Hen party »

Stayed at Orton Hall for friends hen party, it is a nice hotel with large ground and a spa. On arrival service was good on check in, room was fine but things from this point were disappointing. We were informed we could not go outside in dressing gowns due to wedding happening!! This is a spa hotel and there should not be this kind of restriction without being advised of this when being booked! Lunch was not good, drinks were flat, service was poor and staff were rude, insinuating I was leaving without paying my bill, when I was asking to pay my bill. During the afternoon we were informed we would not be able to use the only hotel bar due to wedding reception, excuse me hen night with no bar!!! Various members of our party received verbally aggressive behaviour from other hotel guests. I feel that we paid for use of a facility but were unable to access the parts that we really booked this weekend to enjoy, very disappointing won't recommend.

« Little gem near Peterborough »

Lovely hotel with the option of eating in their fine restaurant or the pub in the grounds. Lovely swimming pool and set in nice grounds. Some rooms are a little dated, but the ambiance is lovely. I stay here for business and weekend breaks. Good location for getting around the area (just a short hop off the A1).

    « Great hotel »

We only stayed for one night at this hotel but I wish we had stayed for longer! The hotel feels like it is in the middle of the countryside when in fact it is very central to the city. The car park is roomy and there are spaces to charge your car if it is electric. We read reviews about not parking under the trees due to squirrels and birds but we didn't have any problems. Our room was very spacious and well equipped and had a view over the back of the hotel which looks very historic and old. There was everything you could have asked for: safety deposit box, tea tray, toiletries. Because the hotel is old, there was the usual squeaky floorboards and door banging but it didn't disturb our sleep. Breakfast was very tasty and plentiful. The variety of food was extensive and I doubt that anyone would go hungry afterwards. We didn't use the spa as my husband said he felt uncomfortable walking through to the pool and past the lounge area which was full of women in bath robes. But the pool looked very clean and the pool area had loungers and chairs.

« Very nice relaxing break »

Just returned from a 2 night weekend break at Orton Hall It was lovely! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very tasty particularly the sausages plenty to eat. It was self service but the staff kept filling up the servings and the plates were warm. We were seated straight away and asked if we wanted tea or coffee which was quick to arrive. We spent first night in the Ramblewood arms which served basic pub food we both had steak which was very well cooked (medium as asked for) and the guy behind the bar very kindly told us to place our order for food when we arrived because they had a large party of people arriving, which we did and we were served quickly We had a swim at the spa which was good. Spent second evening in the Huntley Restaurant where the food and service was very good indeed.

    « Excellent all round »

We wanted somewhere special to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary and this hotel didn't disappoint. The room was very comfortable and clean, en-suite bathroom had complimentary toiletries, parking was excellent and the evening meal in the Hunters Restaurant was very well presented and tasted divine, good portion sizes too. Staff were very friendly, polite and welcoming.

    « Grand old hotel »

Whilst we did enjoy our stay at this hotel, my first impression was that we had been slightly duped by the description. The hotel is indeed set within beautiful parkland but it is 'woodland trust' land and I expected to be in a more remote location from the description of set in 20 acres of parkland. The area is residential to all but one border, with schools within sight of the grounds. Drivers beware your car will get covered in bird droppings; the car park is lined with trees! Due to the age of the building it is not surprising that the metal windows no longer fit into the stonework! That said, my first night was disturbed by traffic noise, as I am a light sleeper. The plumbing is also in need of some attention; the cold tap took several turns before any water appeared and then it was warm! The hot tap was scolding hot. Adjusting the shower hose resulted in the shower leaking from the top. I booked a superior room for my husband's birthday celebration and requested a nice view and was given a room overlooking a cemetery! The canopy of the four poster bed was covered in dust. Some of the drapes in the main hotel also had layers of dust on them. Having said all of that, we did enjoy our stay, the food and especially the breakfast was excellent. We had one evening meal in the restaurant and that was very good. I want to mention Paul who served us coffee in the lounge. He was very friendly, courteous and genuinely interested in making our stay enjoyable. Also, the young lady who welcomed us into breakfast each morning was lovely (sorry I didn't catch your name!). The imagine spa is excellent and is the main reason I booked this hotel, though we didn't have any treatments, you have access to the leisure facilities, which consist of a beautiful pool, sauna, steam room and relax room. There is a little pub adjoining the hotel, it is mainly set up for dining so do not expect any comfy chairs to sit and lounge by the fire! All said, this is a grand old hotel and worth a visit. We booked a second night separately and obviously got a better rate than the one I had booked previously, so the combined cost for 2 nights was good but I would say that £190 for DBB is overpriced. Peterborough, a few miles away, is a beautiful cathedral city.

« Great spa but food very mediocre »

I took a friend for a spa break - with a spa breaks agency, but it included a day at Imagine spa, 30 min treatment, overnight stay plus £25 per head for dinner. The spa is great - small but has all you need. We booked the 45 min mud chamber session (at extra £) but really nice and calming, good for couples I would imagine! My massage was fab from therapist Sarah, although the aromatherapy element was not really noticeable in terms of scent. The rooms are fine, ours were on the ground floor - bit dated but nothing to really offend. The only downside was the food at the Ramblewood Inn - it came as part of our spa deal so maybe this is not an issue for regular bookings. But it was like a sticky carpeted harvester style place...the food was a bit dire and starters came cold...we played safe with salmon but nothing to really inspire. It's reasonable though for drinks and the staff were lovely - even topped up an Irish coffee at no extra charge. So go for the spa but maybe avoid the Ramblewood Inn if you're holding out for a culinary treat.

    « Conference venue »

As an organisation, we use a number of local venues in East Anglia for our public training courses. Orton Hall is just one. The staff are always helpful and polite, and that includes the cleaners & ground staff. We are regularly looked after by Matthew, the head porter and nothing is too much trouble. Always polite, smart and helpful - definitely an asset. Jackie, the Duty Manager always looks after us with a smile. As a training venue, the hotel & grounds are great.

    « Business stay »

Have stayed here a few times on business. Generally excellent. Nice clean well appointed rooms, service excellent . Breakfast is as can be expected for the uk . Health club is nicely appointed with excellent staff. Shame gym is so small but there are lots of nice places to take a run if that's your thing.

« Such a brilliant little (quite big) place »

Clean-tick, pretty-tick, good facilities-tick, location-tick, parking-tick. I stayed in the executive ground floor room and it was so spacious. Huge bathroom, huge bedroom. Wonderful views and quite little area. Highly recommended. Was shocked as have stayed in Beat Westerns before so expected it to not be as lovely as it was. Lovely for couples, families and for business. Recommended.

    « Lovely Countryhouse Hotel »

We regularly visit family in Peterborough and stay here for the night. The rooms are spacious and of the quality you would expect of a Countryhouse hotel. The breakfast was very nice and in a lovely restaurant. However, the food in the buffet restaurant was very poor, two of us had the buffet and two from the menu, and we waited ages for our meal and the veg was inedible. Such a shame as the hotel and staff are lovely, but the food was definitely a let down.

« My Stay in Peterborough »

Really nice hotel with excellent decor on the outside. The hotel is close to a park for walking. A bit far from the city, about a 15 minute drive. The cathedral in the city is a must see if you stay here. A lot of history also surrounding the city. The breakfast is really pricey for what you get.

    « Mixed bag »

Beautiful place.lovely room. Even had enough pillows which is rare. Friendly staff. However; mediocre breakfast. Tasteless beans and tomato. And who eats hash browns in Britain? Fried bread or local equivalent please this is not America! Also black pudding on the plate even though we asked for it to be left off. I found that offensive. Chilly atmosphere in dining get room as in don't dare have a conversation! I didn't like the waitress changing tablecoths etc while we were trying to relax over our very expensive breakfast. Handy location when travelling up the country. We checked in at nearly midnight but no problem

    « Last Minute »

Me and my partner booked a last minute getaway and decided to stay here. It was prefect and was everything we wanted to de stress from the week we've had. The staff were all so lovely and the massages we had were one of the best we've had. We would definitely recommend this hotel. Beautiful place.

Attended our sons wedding reception here. Checkin courteous, efficient and helpful. Bedrooms comfortable, spacious and cosy. Catering at reception excellent. All staff very proficient, Luke went out if his way to assist us. Breakfast excellent. Grounds very peaceful. Didn't use Spa facilities, but would do if visiting again. Good parking.

    « Good 2 night stay »

The grounds of the hotel are lovely, and I was impressed when pulling into the property. Check in went smoothly until I got to the room and found 3 single beds when I'd paid for a double. Straight back to reception to explain I haven't slept in a single bed since I was 10 years old and I wasn't about to start now. There was a long pause like the chap behind reception wasn't willing to change my room but I eventually got the double I paid for. The room was nice and big, but not modern looking. Very comfortable though and I slept well. A colleague was in a room near the hotel entrance, he said he had a terrible nights sleep due to the door opening and closing by what he assumed were guests arriving late and the night staff having a smoke. The spa facilities were great, lovely pool and sauna, steam room and jacuzzi etc. Didn't have time for a treatment but it looked busy which normally means good things. The restaurant has way better food than the bar (I've reviewed both separately) so head there for a meal unless you are desperately in need of something cheap and cheerful like a burger. Wifi seemed good throughout the hotel and in the room. Room was made up nicely each day. Breakfast was good, but not great. The buffet is my new nemesis..... The food just doesn't taste seem or taste fresh so I'm never a huge fan so stuck to the fruit and yogurt. All in all I'd say this is a great hotel for business or pleasure, not cheap but in my opinion worth the money paid.

    « Home from Home »

I worked out the other day that we have been visiting this hotel for well over 20 years. On average we stay once a month, over the years I've seen the pool added and the extension. But despite all the changes it manages to maintain its charm. Some members of staff have been there for as long as we've been going as guests. That to me speaks volumes, the staff are friendly helpful and genuinely go out of their way to enhance your stay. The breakfasts are very tasty but I have to admit I like the odd quiet weekday when you don't get the breakfast buffet. It has a very homely feel for a hotel, the rooms are kept immaculately clean. The housekeeping staff work very hard and do a fabulous job. It is not far from the centre and yet has a quiet country feel. It has a pub next door and a more a la Carte experience in the Huntly restaurant. The pool and spa are the icing on the cake. I'm sure that I will still be visiting in 20 years and there aren't many hotels where you can say that! A big thank you to Orton Hall for the wonderful service over the years.

« Lovely Hotel - but be aware! »

We stayed for three nights over a weekend. Lovely old hotel in expansive grounds, but close to Peterborough town centre. Large room, all amenities, and the mattress topper made the bed very comfortable. Very nice food. Friendly and helpful staff. Weddings on Fri/Sat/Sun. Sunday was no problem at all. Friday there was about 30 minutes of noise as the wedding guests dispersed. But on Saturday there were drunken wedding guests shouting/screaming/banging on doors for about 90 minutes in the early hours - and although it was all close to Reception the hotel staff seemed to do nothing! We were also unlucky in that our car got literally covered in squirrel poo whilst parked in the hotel grounds (which seems to be a regular occurrence), but Paul from the hotel came to our rescue and helped us clean the worst off the car.

    « Full of Charecter »

A lovely quiet hotel, with friendly staff. It is a beautiful building that dates back to 1086 or thereabouts. There is an information pack in the room, which was full of interesting information. Bright and airy bathroom, modern and clean design. My room was cleaned daily, beds made, and complementery tea & coffee, toiletries topped up. I , Stayed in room139, which is a quiet room, very atmospheric, if a little spooky, im sure it is haunted by friendly young spirits. I have recommened this hotel to my friends and will return for a mini break. It is a quiet location however it is close enough to Peterborough if you want clubs or noisy bars. I didnt use the spa as i was there on business.

Very pleased with everything as we had a comfortable stay. It has the old world charm about it- mature trees outside, the high ceilings, the space -indoors and outdoors and it is in a nice quiet location. Water runs well with good power in the taps without being too feeble or powerful. And staff are polite and helpful which can make a huge difference. We will certainly come again.

« Overnight Stay at Orton Hall »

I had the opportunity of staying in this hotel due to an invitation to a friend's 60th birthday. I travelled with my son. Our first impression when we arrived was 'Wow, what a beautiful building'. We received a lovely welcome from the reception staff, and very soon after we went to our twin room. Again, 'wow' , massive room, very bright and fresh and on the ground floor. We lacked for nothing, the complimentary tea/coffee/hot chocolate provided a great choice. There were also sufficient toiletries provided for our stay. The room was very comfortable. We took advantage of the extensive breakfast, too much to choose from!! All very tasty. The hotel has a spa and pool and all associated facilities, unfortunately we didn't get chance to use them but plenty of guests seemed to be making use of them! A lovely hotel with excellent facilities and excellent staff.

« Great place to visit »

I have visited Orton Hall twice in the last couple of weeks and have had a great time on both visits. The staff went out of their way to help you and were always very friendly. We all had various treatments and have to say they were one of the best I have personally had. I will definitely be visiting again as it is a great venue to catch up with friends.

    « Amazing time »

My partner and I had an amazing time at the hotel and spa. Excellent price for our room, we were on the second floor with lovely views. We enjoyed the facilities at the spa and also had one treatment each, which was very relaxing. Staff were helpful, friendly, and the hotel has free parking. Beautiful building inside and out.

    « One night away »

Me and my boyfriend booked a night away in this hotel. When we arrived, we were greeting by two guys behind reception, which were the least pleasant out of all the staff throughout the stay. Everyone else were so pleasant and helpful, but they were definitely not so interested in their clients. We have booked an exclusive double room, which was on the top floor overlooking the gardens. Really nice and spacious, although the bed was too soft for us. Another down side is that we found stains on the chair and the carpets in the room, which you wouldn't expect for the money paid and the rating the hotel is in. When we got to reception to book a table for dinner, we were advised the restaurant is fully booked and asked to eat at the pub nearby! I found it crazy, when the hotel restaurant can't even serve its own hotel guests that are staying there!! Spa facilities were good, although no supervision, no one cleaning the floors, one of the guests slipped outside sauna and hurt his elbow so it started bleeding. Was there anyone to help or any first aid kits? No. That really disappointed us. Breakfast was nice and staff was pleasant. Would we come back? Possibly not. Was not worth the money we spent.

    « Super hotel, professional staff - - but! »

After a long awaited family reunion weekend at Orton Hall, we can confirm that this is indeed a comfortable, attractive & conveniently situated hotel in lovely grounds. We enjoyed the large, well appointed rooms, the excellent facilities & the spacious, comfortable lounge areas ideal for family 'catch-ups'! We were particularly impressed by the friendly, helpful & thoroughly professional staff. This was especially notable when we had cause to report a rather disturbing incident to Reception staff who listened sympathetically to our concerns & resolved the latter promptly & entirely to our satisfaction. It is sad that this seems to happen so rarely in the hospitality industry these days. Whilst our weekend certainly represented good value for money, the evening meals were perhaps somewhat disappointing. Thus whilst some items on the menu were delicious, others were certainly not. It is worth reporting that this inconsistency was not evidenced in the breakfasts which were excellent! Puzzling! We would certainly use Orton Hall again.

Booked an overnight stay for a hen do. Staff was wonderfully friendly and attentive. Hotel is has been kept in keeping with its era which is nice to see, and has beautiful grounds. Stayed here for one night in this truly great setting. It's a lovely historic old building with some amazing characteristics. The hotel staff were friendly helpful and accommodated all our needs. The facilities were clean spacious and relaxing. The bedroom was comfortable the bed was dreamy only one point to raise was that room was very warm but there were fans to temper that. The bathroom was a very good size and clean. We would definitely return here when in the area. Thank you.

« Wonderful in every way »

The Orton Hall Hotel has its location, its history and its architecture in its favour already. However, the staff are very professional and go out of their way to make your stay "perfect". The place is spotless and the rooms full of those extra touches that make for a comfortable stay away from home.

« Lovely Hotel for a Weekend Away »

Visited with 7 relatives for long overdue weekend together. Lovely staff, excellent service especially in Huntly Restaurant, lovely food, great swimming pool with good quality spa treatments, Will definitely visit again all they need to do is redesign their reception area as it does not "sell" the rest of the hotel and is nothing like the rest of the property.

« Quiet hotel, friendly staff and excellent Spa facilities »

Stayed here for 2 nights - booked 2 rooms. Both very well decorated and pleased we upgraded to 4-poster as room nice and bright and spacious. Very friendly staff, particularly those at breakfast, fast and efficient service, very helpful, and discreet. Reasonable breakfast choice, everything you need, though nothing particularly special about it. Quite a dull, boring dining/breakfast room - needs to be livened up a bit and modernised in line with other parts of the hotel where a lot of natural brick and stone gives a lovely uplifting feel particularly around the reception/seating areas. Got locked out of both rooms after first night which shouldn't have happened. Room phones didn't work and credit card problems too while we were there. The hotel bar area lets this hotel down; a few choices of scotch whisky but lots of empty boxes on display of single malts not available to buy! Bar staff friendly but with limited knowledge. and just one table and two shoddy seats only in bar area so take drinks into 'conservatory' which unfortunately is a very neglected and depressingly cold area to sit in. But there is a pub attached to this hotel which we didn't venture into. The hotel Spa is really great here, with lovely pool, jacuzzi and very hot steam and dry sauna rooms accessed from the pool area and a lovely relaxing alcove with low lights - very well designed poolside which lets the sun shine through the glass roof on to the sunbeds and pool. Magazines scattered around. Changing rooms cramped with very few facilities but massage was good though quite expensive. A bit disappointed with grounds - not as nice or extensive as we had hoped but instead went for a 2 hour walk across the road on the edge of the village into the Orton lakes/reserve area which also took us through and into the City of Peterborough. Nice to see all the rowers practising and the Boathouse pub is there too.

« Looks better in photos »

Front desk need refit and restaffing. Breakfast staff very good. Phones didn't work. Room decor outdated. No mixer tap on sink. Over bath shower in four poster. Heating too high. Hard to adjust. Had to open window but disturbed at 5am by rubbish trucks in the distance. Restaurant dead on Sunday night.

    « Nice »

We only stayed for one night but had a lovely room overlooking the gardens which I am sure would be great in the summer. Vast comfy bed, nice linen and a good shower. What else could you need ? We didn't have dinner at the hotel so can't comment on this but the breakfast was hot and fresh, something that you can't always say for buffet style service.

« Good but not great »

This is a strange hotel that mixes modern will old fashioned and quality with some rough edges. The food is of a high quality, service is good, sauna and pool area of a high quality. The pub area is in urgent need of refurbishment and the restaurant whilst being well pleasant seems quite old fashioned. Pound for pound I think we had a really good deal. With a little more investment this hotel could really have the wow factor

This is the second large occasion that we have booked and attended. The first, our daughters wedding and today her baby shower. We are so impressed with the helpfulness, courtesy and kindness of the staff and their intent to make it all feel very special. The refreshments were beautifully presented and delicious and the staff most helpful and attentive. We returned today as they had made such a positive impression at the wedding. Thank you Orton Hall! Hope to return again in the future!

    « Huntley restaurant »

My husband and I have visited on a few occasions and love it here. The chefs are skilled and the service is fantastic. You can take your time and aren't rushed out of the door as with some restaurants, if you are in a rush then this place is possibly not for you as it's a whole evening kind of place. The surroundings are beautiful and makes the whole experience very special.

    « Lovely hotel with a spa »

We booked at the last minute and as there were no double rooms available were expecting to push the two singles together but we're very happy to find we had a double and a single bed in our room. The room was very comfortable with tea and coffee facilities. We took the opportunity to use the spa which was quite busy but not overcrowded, we had use of the pool, sauna, steam room relax area and gym. The staff were very friendly and breakfast was good, the only thing that would have made it an excellent breakfast would have been a freshly ground espresso. Lovely peaceful grounds. I would come again.

    « Mice in the room! :( »

Booked a room through Trivago for a nice relaxing weekend break with my partner- double executive room which looked lovely on the website. Unfortunately the room we were given did not resemble this at all, it was very plain and basic with dated furniture and curtains. Anyway, we fell asleep that night and all was well- until 5am when we both awoke to the sound of scratching/gnawing coming from the corner. We switched on the light to investigate, which is when we witnessed a mouse scurry across the floor under the chest of drawers! (After it had chewed through my bag to get to the hotel biscuits!) we tried calling reception- answerphone. So we gathered our bags and ran downstairs. The gentleman at reception apologised and we were told the manager would call ASAP. In the mean time, we were told to sit and wait for breakfast! No alternative accommodation arranged. It took a further 4 hours before we eventually managed to speak to management at reception after he failed to call us back and fortunately we were given a refund. He said nothing like this had happened before but after looking at other trip advisor reviews, it seems that was a fib! Not very impressed at all, and certainly wouldn't jump at the chance of re-booking!

    « Great spa hotel »

My wife booked this hotel for my birthday as a surprise and arranged a deep tissue back massage. The massage was great and then we used the pool and other facilities which were all good - the sauna had a broken bench that looked like it had been broken for some time. The room was clean and more traditional than we usually book and had a four poster bed. The evening meal was good and well presented as was the breakfast. The wifi coverage was good and reasonable speed. This a great hotel for those looking for a more traditional out of town hotel.

Short break on way to London. We had 2 elderly guests with us. Fantastic meal and beautiful surroundings. Only to be spoilt by a room full of loud mouths. Would we return defiantly

    « A very English hotel »

I know this hotel well and visit for functions monthly. I have always described it as an undiscovered, high quality hotel in Peterborough. It doesn't have a high profile and seems to cater from weddings. It was certainly busy. It very English. It is in an old country house. It has been renovated but you can still see what it once was. The long conservatory is a good example. All rooms are understated but comfortable. It is quirky though. The bar is small and often shut. You can't seem to be able to buy bar snacks and you could sit all day on a sofa but never get a coffee. The rooms are large. The beds comfortable. Unlike the Hilton there are plenty of coffee, tea and chocolate drinks and a good kettle. The bathrooms clean and modern- and enough soaps and gells. No air conditioning, which is not really needed, but a fan in the corner. Breakfast was hearty and a good choice. It might have been an idea to have one member of staff filling the buffet as each container emptied. Fantastic grounds. Many guests walked around or walked their dogs. This a nice hotel. Not four stars because service is limited. It is great for a week end away and a restful time.

    « A real gem »

Whilst this hotel may not be 5* luxury, for its category it is excellent and truly exceeded our expectations. All staff were exceptionally professional and helpful, from Paul the porter who changed a non functioning lamp and brought us extra tea bags to all the waiting staff in the Huntley restaurant. The swimming pool is a decent size and we enjoyed a swim, steam, sauna and jacuzzi - we would have booked a treatment, but as it was a Saturday all were pre-booked and all loungers taken. That however, did not dampen our enjoyment of the lesiure facility. Our room was a superior twin with an extra bed, there was plenty of space, a three piece suite and tea/coffee making. There were plenty of original quirky features, high ceilings and a fireplace in the bathroom. The bathroom was well appointed, clean and a good size. We had an excellent dinner and breakfast in the Huntley restaurant (please see separate review). Overall a great stay which exceeded our expectations - will hunt out Best Western Plus hotels in the future.

    « What a shame. »

So much potential, lovely old building and grounds. We expected a venue full of atmosphere for our choir celebration dinner but found it to be totally lacking. Our dining room was bland with a small bar serving expensive drinks. The three course meal, the cost of which was subsidised by our choir, was still too expensive. The choices were very limited for all three courses and mediocre throughout, just one small cup of coffee at end of meal and we had to search for a refill. We were not impressed with service staff appearance or skills. We felt that we were being moved out at 22:30 with the only choice being their adjoining pub, they do not appear to have a residents bar or restaurant and just send people to their adjoining pub (we tried the pub once, food and drink was so bad we have not been back). We were so grateful that we were not residents and that the city centre was nearby so we decamped to the Bull and had a very nice time there. Others have told us that on the basis of this meal they would not return.

This was a mother and daughter experience with good friends. We arrived on 23rd January and came home on 24th. We had never visited before, and it won't be our last visit. The hotel and grounds are awe inspiring, and full of architectural interest. The Internet described it as a 3 star hotel, as does the hotel itself. I don't know what a hotel has to have, to give it a 5 star rating, but we all felt that we had a 5 star experience at Orton Hall. Our bedroom was huge and well appointed...and lovely and warm. The staff were genuinely friendly and cared about making our stay comfortable. We had a deal £114 per person for Spa facilities, 1 treatment , robes and dinner bed and breakfast. Having been a member of the Beckenham Amida, the Spa facilities were smaller, but compared very well. The 30 minute massage was so oooo relaxing and therapeutic. Our meal in the Huntley restaurant was superb and the portions were very generous. Wonderful. The nearby town of Peterborough is full of character and historic interest.

    « Fantastic family hotel »

The booking staff could not have been more helpful. We booked for a family party of age 0 to 80 and they were all catered for. I enjoyed the spa and we a all found the staff friendly and helpful particularly to my disabled parents.

Lovely historic building with tasteful additions has resulted in a hotel providing comfort in interesting surroundings. Although was the middle of winter when we visited, the grounds appeared to be lovely. The breakfast was amazing and the staff were very friendly.

« Comfortable Hotel set in peaceful grounds »

We booked rather late for 2 nights, arrived early morning of the 1st day we had not been here before, so we use Sat Nav to find Hotel, bit confused when on the Main road it say Best Western, but then gives the name of R...Inn not Orton Hall you are close to Orton Mere the building rambles, great place full of corridors and comfort we had 2 breakfasts, ,staff in restraunt knew how to serve well, (old oil taste in some the cooked ("hashs" etc) noted by staff, maybe the chef should eat his own food then this would not happen ,(kitchen letting down on quality the second day we did not have fried eggs or the hashes for breakfast ,very caring throughout the hotel, room was well appointed we had a ground floor room in a place where we could park the car close to the room, Spa worth a every minute ( go early it gets busy) we needed to use taxi's no problems from chambermaid to management these people love the Hotel, the Church is used for weddings but also has regular Sunday services

    « A bit of everything »

Stayed here for the first time on business. The building is a mixture of modern but also the very charming older part which is where the restaurant is. Was originally attracted by the leisure facilities. The pool area is excellent with jacuzzi, sauna and loungers. There are also an area with 2 treadmills and 2 cross trainers which is adequate for a quick workout while away on business. Excellent evening meal in the hotel restaurant. Nice choice, good food and excellent friendly attentive service which is quite rare. Much better than the food in the Ramblewood Inn which is the pub attached. My advice is to go in the restaurant in the hotel. Although more expensive it is well worth it!! Room spacious, adequate decor and very nice modern bathroom. Would recommend as it as a bit of everything!

    « You won't be disappointed »

Have stayed here over five times over the past few years. We no treat it as our favourite hotel. Set in its own grounds with its own church. It has on of the best locations for a hotel with some great facilities to enjoy. Rooms are split into two sections. The new section and the stately house section. The rooms are all well appointed ranging from the basic to full suites. The Huntley restaurant has some amazing staff and serve the best alacart menus around. You won't be dissapointed. The spa is very relaxing with a warm pool, jacuzzi , steam room and sauna. Also boasts a relaxation area to switch off. The Ramblewood Inn connected to the hotel again has a great atmosphere and bar food if the alacart menu isn't to your taste. Great value for money and well worth the stay. Five star.

Poor service from start to finish. Had a mouse in our room. Saw a mouse running down the corridor had a 45 minute wait for a coffee, and the bar was closed. Would not stop here again. 4 stars should be no stars

Excellent bedroom. Excellent service. Excellent food -what more can one say. Clean tidy efficient and friendly. Also close to Peterborough City Centre, just across the road from Orton Mere and Nene Park.

Historic and atmospheric hotel with spacious rooms. Decor rather tired and could do with some innovative decorations.. Good swimming pool and cleanliness of the changing rooms. Lots of rooms and function areas, - some used for weddings.which cater for parties of differing sizes. Historic part includes wonderful dining room with wooden paneling.

« Fantastic overall hotel - Would go back »

We had a lovely time at the hotel, our room was more like a suite - Sofas, tables chairs, enormous bathroom and a glorious 4 poster bed - Dinner in the restaurant was fantastic, the pool lovely - Our only slight and it was slight is we felt the breakfast was expensive for what was offered

« My Wedding At Orton Hall »

It's extremely difficult to review your own wedding objectively as to me, my wedding day was obviously one of the best days of my life, so it has taken me some time to sit down and write this review! (My wedding was in Nov 2014) We chose Orton Hall predominately because there is a church right next door and having a traditional wedding service was very important to us, and the convenience of guests not having to travel between sites (and not having the expensive of a wedding car) was extremely appealing. We also thought that the venue offered good value for money. In order to give prospective wedding couples the most comprehensive overview of my experience, I'll start from the beginning (this may be a long one!) We booked the wedding in Nov 13. I was very disappointed to find that despite the huge cost of having a wedding at this venue, they still charged you to book the taster meal. It cost us £40 per head as my husband is a veggie and we wanted to try two main meals each in order to make a decision about what's best (no other venue that we considered charged for this) We were very careful to check that the meals we had at the taster would be the same as the meals served at the wedding (I.e. quality and portion size). We were assure that they would be. As part of the package you had a wedding co-ordinater. Whilst she was lovely on the phone (whenever you were able to get through to her), she didn't work on the weekends so she wasn't there to actually oversee the set up of the wedding to ensure everything was as according to your wishes so essentially she didn't co-ordinate anything other than confirm numbers and take payment which feasibly anyone at the venue could do. I loved the idea of the onsite spa and had visions of a pamper day the day before the wedding and I loved the idea of the convenience of them doing my wedding make up. Unfortunately the service at the spa didn't match up to my imagination. A number of the staff were quite unapproachable and unfriendly whenever I popped in (the manager was lovely though). My mother and I booked wedding makeup trials which were just awful (thank goodness for booking the trial!!) the same girl did both our makeup and she succeeded in making us both look more like drag queens than the blushing bride and mother of the bride. She didn't particularly match foundation correctly, didn't really take heed on our particular preferred style of make up and overall it was extremely disappointing. Aside from the awful makeup, she and her colleague had conversations over us the whole time (about what they were doing at the weekend, who was seeing who etc) which was just rude. I would not recommend the spa or bridal makeup at all. During the actual weekend of the wedding there was a fair bit of building work going on at the hotel as they were expanding the reception area. We were not told about the expected building work at the time of booking the wedding, and despite the builders not working on the weekend, the hotel still did not look as pristine as you would like for your wedding day so this was a disappointment. All of our guests stayed at the hotel, most of which stayed the Friday night as well as the Saturday so it was extremely convenient that the hotel was able to accommodate this. When booking the wedding you can reserve rooms which was absolutely ideal and if you don't use them all, release them about a month before the wedding. The rooms were also offered at a slightly reduced rate too which was good. My bridesmaids and I stayed in the hotel the night before the wedding (I think this room should have been in gratis, but actually they charged us). There is no lift in the hotel and they put us on the third floor, which has an old tiny staircase leading up to it. This was not well thought out because it was exhausting for beauticians and hairdressers (and indeed anyone else) having to travel up and down the stair case with all their equipment. The room was really nice though and the bathroom a good size. It was a good job we did stay the Friday night because no body had communicated to the staff how the rooms should be laid out for the wedding (surely this should be the wedding co-ordinaters role?) so I had to spend a good proportion of time going through everything with the staff on Friday evening so that it was all set out correctly. It wasn't overly an issue doing this, but as you would expect this to have already been communicated, I'd already had a couple of glasses of wine at this point! Also I only happened upon this by chance (being nosey and wanting to see the room) and noticed the top table was in the wrong place.. If I hadn't been nosey then the room would have been set up completely wrong so it's good thing I did check. I feel this was a massive oversight and error on the hotels part. On the morning of the wedding we had breakfast served in our room. The breakfast was nice (we had full English to line our stomachs!) and the staff brought up glasses and champagne buckets for us to use with our own drinks which was nice. We did have a disaster in that the staff the night before had left off a chair from the top table (we had left them the seating plan so they had obviously miscounted) - we had an outside company provide chair covers and sashes, so they had arrived, covered the chairs and left. Fortunately my mother had the common sense to count the chairs and refer to the seating plan and noticed the issue and reported this to the duty manager. The duty manager then had the audacity to argue with my mother (which quite upsetting her) that it wasn't their fault etc etc..... Ultimately, we didnt care whose fault it was, we needed it rectifying! So I had to spend time sorting this out which was irritating on the morning of my wedding. We were warned that if the weather was poor we wouldn't get the red carpet. The weather was terrible the day before but we were lucky on the day and the red carpet was out. This made it that little bit more special so we were very grateful. Despite the fiasco with the chair covers the staff did wonderfully dressing the main hall and conservatory and everything looked amazing. we had a toast master (courtesy of the hotel) and it was so lovely being introduced into each room.... We felt like royalty! The toast master was extremely attentive and stayed behind us to offer his services during the whole meal. This was great apart from the fact that he is now in every one of our pictures, and it wasn't a subtle place either where we could crop him out! Also (rooky error) he did not put his phone on silent which preceded to ring in the middle of the best mans speech- not great. The food, despite our assurances of the same quality as at the tasting, which extremely disappointing and was effectively a waste of money having the tasting as it was no where near the same quality. The soup was extremely watery, the portion sizes significantly smaller and the veg were at best 'al dente' although most would consider undercooked. The waitress who served the top table, when serving my bridesmaid split the tomato soup all over the table. Fortunately this did not go over her (or my!) dress but it did completely mess up the table. Aside from that the service was very good and the staff attentive and polite. We booked the disco that the hotel recommends (although we did this directly was the hotel charge around £50- £100 extra for the privilege of booking it). Unfortunately the disco cut out numerous times including during the first dance which was frustrating, especially for the money they charge. This obviously wasn't the hotels fault but do consider booking your own disco. The rest of the night went without a hitch. One of the barmen for the evening was particularly cheeky and I think from reports did try it on with a few of my young female guests. I thought this was hilarious, but others might not find this so appropriate. The bridal suite was included in the price and was at best satisfactory. The bathroom was tiny and I struggled to use the toilet in my dress due to how cramped it was. The walls were also paper thin (to the extent you could hear conversations next door) and my brothers were placed in the room next door which certainly impacted the romantic ambience of our wedding night!! Overall though, my wedding was brilliant, despite the few hiccups. I can't impress strongly enough how great the staff were (with the exception of the wedding co-ordinated, the duty manager and the spa)... The hotel was exceptionally clean despite the building work and suited what we wanted perfectly. It's difficult to determine whether I would still hold my wedding here should I had the benefit of hindsight as I only have experiences of other weddings from a guest point of view.... The food really was a massive bone of contention for me and I think the most disappointing aspect of the day. Aside from that, every wedding day will have hiccups which I would chalk the rest of the issues up as. If you do decide to go ahead with Orton hall as your venue, I wish you a wonderful day!

    « Great weekend break »

We had a weekend break at Orton Hall Hotel. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, our room was lovely, clean and good size. The pool and spa area is very relaxing and staff very helpful. We had our evening meal on the on site pub, we were looked after brilliantly by Pat and his team of very friendly staff. The food was good too. We looked forward to going back in February. Another plus for us is the lovely walk along the steam engine railway to Ferry Meadows.

« Visited for a xmas party and over night stay »

This place is gorgeous. Set in beautiful grounds and stunning building. I was there for the Honda Owners club motorbike xmas party and there was about 60 of us all staying in the hotel as well as having the party. The staff were fantastic, the food was amazing and the service was faultless. Would highly recommend anyone to stay here. The rooms were stunning and very clean and well maintained.

« Fantastic Spa break with great evening meal! »

We visited Orton Hall on Friday 27th November after booking online. It was an amazing deal we got. Spa, large room, evening three course meal and buffet breakfast. We checked in at 1.30pm and were given our keys to our room on the ground floor. The room was large, clean with a good view. However, I do feel that this room needed a bit of a refurb. Now, the room was clean throughout but just had the feeling or need to be updated. Great facilities all round. We then popped to their on site pub for a drink which was nice and friendly too. After that we went to the pool and spa area where we relaxed for a good few hours. All facilities were top Standard. We then returned to room and got ready for our evening 3 course meal which we were told was the first night of their new menu. The food was OUTSTANDING! Presentation, quality and taste! Perfect! Great service too! So... Would we return? Oh yes, very soon.

    « Christmas Party »

We had our works Christmas Party here and I cannot compliment the staff more it was a great night. We choose the venue due its is location (Peterborough) and also because of the choice of food, we were not disappointed with the food it was served quickly and was hot when we received it vegetables were not soggy and potatoes were real! The only disappointment I had was that I enjoyed my starter and main so much I didn't have room for my pudding which looked lovely and from the tiny bit I tasted was delicious. The rooms were very clean, I used to work in this industry so can be quite fussy when it comes to cleanliness (and straight lamp shades/pictures) but I could not find any fault at all. It is my responsibility every year to organise our works Christmas party and I like to go somewhere different each year but I would be very tempted to return here next year. Thank you to all the staff at the hotel including the staff in the library bar who served us after the party as we were residents. Unfortunately we did not get to use the pool, but I would love to return in warmer weather to explore the hotel.

« Lovely building and grounds »

When you drive in you go wow, reception is quick and every where looks cosy. I had a room where I had to go out of the building twice to get too my room something which I don't like , when I book an hotel I expect to stay in it not an outhouse but to be honest the room was lovely.Did not eat in the restaurant so can't comment, one of the group had stayed the night before and had commented on the breakfast being cold, so I went for pooched eggs and they were served Luke warm and yes the breakfast was cold again! Parking is ample but watch out for puddles and mud.

    « Spa Break »

Very nice stay overall. However there are two things I think you should know. Firstly make sure you take a cover for your vehicle as you will return to find it covered in squirrel dirt. I could not believe how much of a problem this hotel has with this problem. The local car wash must be booming with trade. Secondly I was disappointed that the robes you get with your spa break are not white and fluffy they are white and boiled to an inch of their life. Very stiff and rough with a musty smell. I had two different robes (one size fits all.....not) and both were the same.

« Beautiful building and spa but a little disappointed! »

My family and i visited this hotel to celebrate my parents 30th anniversary over the weekend. The hotel is beautiful from the outside! The rooms are a little old fashioned but were clean and comfortable! We were disappointed that both of our rooms were not next to each other and were in separate buildings. The walls are quite thin and so there is disturbance from other hotel guests. The heating doesnt work until the temperature drops and we were extremely cold. We reported this to reception and was told to leave the room door open to set the heaters on for the entire hotel. This did not work and we were freezing. Once we made a complaint to hotel reception for the 3rd time they said they would look into it and sure enough after dinner the room was warmer. The spa is lovely the jacuzzi a little small but the pool itself relaxation room massage and changing facilities are much better than i expected and were brilliant!! We all thoroughly enjoyed this! I told the hotel we were celebrating my parents 30th anniversary and they were helpful by putting some cakes and a present I posted to the hotel in my parents room. I had arranged this beforehand with the hotel staff through many emails. However on the day when the cakes were delivered i was told by the cake company that the hotel receptionist was unaware of what to do with the cakes when they were delivered. I had to phone the hotel to make sure the cakes and present were definitely going to be put in the room as already arranged the prior day, the lady on the reception was unaware of the arrangement. Luckily i phoned them otherwise the surprise would have been ruined! I feel that the hotel and staff could have made more of a fuss for our special occassion like so many other places do. This was a memorable weekend and a celebration for us. A lot of places I have stayed in before have gone out of their way to make our time memorable as we are celebrating a special occassion. They could have put some balloons in the room or just acknowledged when we checked in that we are celebrating a special event. So i was a little disappointed as I did highlight to the hotel that I wanted to do something special to surprise my parents. Nevertheless we had a wonderful time and the hotel and facilities were great! Nene park nearby is beautiful for walks and lunch!!

    « Nice place »

A nice place to visit. The hotel is kept clean and tidy. The staff are very friendly and our room was nice, just not as big as I had expected. Food in the hotel was very good and reasonably priced. Spa facilities are nice and free for swim sauna or jacuzzi if staying in the hotel. Overall a nice hotel with a pub next door. All round nice place.

« Good venue for functions »

We have stayed at Orton Hall a few times when attending functions. It's a gorgeous old Manor House with a gothic feel about its architecture and as such it's a bit quirky. We've always found the rooms to be spacious and comfortable, decent bathrooms with nice big bath towels, even a flannel when we stayed recently. Service is always very welcoming at reception and at breakfast. The breakfasts are buffet style with plenty of choice - only slight criticism is that I always have the feeling the staff are a tad too quick off the mark to start stripping down the tables after breakfast the instant the doors of the dining room close at 9.45. The swimming pool always looks inviting but I've never had time to try it, nor the spa. The Great Hall is a brilliant venue for functions - full of atmosphere. It is set in parkland which looks attractive for walks - one day I will stay a bit longer and try out all these facilities. Wifi is excellent and free throughout the hotel.

I stayed here with a friend for a relaxing stopover between the north east and Kent. Our room was spacious, well equipped and the beds were very comfortable. The spa facilities were good although the small gym area was rather on public view so not for the shy. We ate in the on site pub in the evening and had tasty good value fare in a relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast was in a lovely room and included a good spread including veggie sausages cooked on request which my friend much appreciated. All in all this is s lovely property that we hope to return to very soon for a girls weekend,'

I've stayed at Orton Hall several times on business and it has everything I need; excellent swimming pool, small (tiny) but adequate gym, good wifi connection, great breakfast, reasonable pub next door serving good food and the rooms are good enough for one or two nights. It's also set in beautiful grounds.

« The Spa was the highlight, but rooms and food were decent »

This was the first time I'd visited this hotel, having found a spa package online. My wife and I stayed here for one night and were really pleasantly surprised by the facilities, especially the pool area, with it's relaxation area and also the mud chamber, which my wife and I enjoyed as part of our spa package. The hotel lobby and bar areas were quite old fashioned and in need of a refurb, but the general hotel ambience was very relaxed. Our room was very spacious indeed, although it too could have done with a bit of modernisation. The food in the restaurant was very pleasant (see pictures) and the wine list had a larger selection than I expected. The staff in the hotel in general were very polite, but not quite trained to the level of many hotels of similar ratings around the local regions. Overall though, the hotel was well worth visiting for the spa and pool area!

I booked a weekend away with my mum and sister , I had stayed here previously with some friends and enjoyed my stay . I was not disappointed, we had a wonderful stay, the staff are so pleasant, friendly and professional , they cant do enough for you to ensure you enjoy your stay. The restaurant food and service was of a high standard, the spa and swimming are extremely clean. The porter Paul was so helpful , carrying cases up to the second floor as there is no lift. ON saying my room was hot the reception were so helpful in sending me up a fan . Breakfast was great , a good selection of hot and cold food and again service with a smile. Thanks for a great weekend we will definitely return .

What a building and location. Superb massive room. Building awesome, so old. Lots to see if you walk around. Breakfast great. Very good service. Everything you could want. Staff brilliant. We stayed here. Overall OK. The leisure facilities were good, Jacuzzi tiny but other than that OK, rooms were large but the décor very dated and tired, inc wallpaper peeling off, stained ceilings etc. No lift. Do not stay here is you can't lug your bag up 3 flights! Restaurant next door was absolute rubbish. Eat elsewhere

« Lovely hotel, average service »

The grounds and hotel itself are beautiful. I also like the fact it has a pub in the grounds too! Good job, as I was told the hotel bar didn't open until 7pm and if we wanted a drink at 5pm, we should go next door! Found a lovely pub down the road (turn right out onto the main road, set back off the main road), worth the 5 minute walk as lovely atmosphere and two pints only £5! Hotel food very nice, swimming facilities pleasant and breakfast good too. Room in main building very nice, lacking toiletries and water though! Room 177 at end of corridor so lovely and peaceful!

    « Disappointed »

Purporting to be superior. However poor standard, very dated, tired and plain. The pictures on the web page are an aspiration it seems and the building is not as grand as is shown in most parts. The decorative order is at best dated and our room had a musty smell on entry. The bathroom was reasonable but lacked work surfaces, no bottled water or fridge, tiny wardrobe 50's furniture off poor quality. The car park surface is muddy when raining and its dark and dismal on arrival. Not a warm welcoming reception, hidden round the corner and in an awkward place. We heard a member of staff sneezing very loudly in the kitchen. Two cups of tea with milk in plastic pots £5 in the adjacent pub. The bar in the hotel is to be avoided with zero character. There is no lift to the third floor.

    « Terrible shame! »

This hotel could be awesome. Unfortunately the rooms in the stable block a significantly lacking, they have no charm or style and have antiquated deco. There is no provision of bottled water in the rooms a basic expectation when paying £100 a night. Unfortunately the staff were the most disappointing element. Unhelpful, unknowledgeable and uninterested. I did not feel welcome when I checked in, the dinner was served by people fit to be working in fawlty towers and at breakfast the three staff members stood in the room gossiping and discussing hotels politics. A real shame as the hotel has so much potential.

« great place for relaxing »

Stayed for a long weekend over the bank holiday in august. Beautiful building both inside and out. Had a great room with a very large four poster bed. Small wardrobe space tucked in the corner with the dressing room drawers over the other side of the room. Did have iron and ironing board. (not that I had any intention of using it, but handy if you need to) Surprised it didn't have a mini bar or fridge, but was a cold weekend, so placed a bucket of water outside on the window ledge and had a "make do" cold storage for our bottled drinks. Spa and swimming pool on site. Made use of a beauty treatment and the pool area. Restaurant for morning breakfast is spacious and had a good range of food choices. Staff attentive to your needs. Good location for walks with the Nene Valley Railway line just a short walk away.

    « Excellent visit »

We recently attended a wedding in Peterborough and the reception was held at the hotel. Every effort was made to ensure we had a comfortable stay, including checking us in early to be able to freshen up before the wedding. The hotel and grounds are stunning and kept in an immaculate state with a very high level of comfort. I believe the biggest asset to the hotel is the staff. Even when passed in the hallways I was greeted, at every turn I was asked if I needed anything and always with a smile. I would like to commend the younger members of staff who worked very long hours during the wedding celebrations and again in the morning, they made the difference between a good stay and an excellent one. Thank you.

The hotel has a very pleasing outlook on arrival. The pool was of an excellent standard with good facilities. The room was comfortable, of a good size with a range of tea/coffee etc. Finally the breakfast was of high standard with a wide range of cereals, croissants, continental breakfast etc as well as a good quality English breakfast selection.

« Lovely hotel and spa »

I've stayed here many times for both business and pleasure. This hotel and the rooms have so much character and settings are gorgeous. Staff are very welcoming and helpful. Rooms I've stayed in have always been very clean, comfortable and functional - everything I need. The spa is lovely, I have had a few treatments and never disapointed. The food at the hotel is very nice. There is also a small gym. There is no lift so will have to use stairs but that didn't bother us. This is always my first choice of hotel when visiting Peterborough

« Nice hotel very close to Peterborough showground »

This is a lovely hotel in good settings but I didn't see a lift so be prepared to carry your bags up the stairs, having said that the receptionist did ask if we needed help. They have facilities for special occasions weddings etc and the rooms are clean, tidy and comfortable. There are tea and coffee facilities in the room and a restaurant or food served in the bar. I wasn't too impressed with the bar food but we did have a 50% off voucher so it was cheap. We have stayed here before and would happily return again. staff are friendly and helpful. View from our room was across a pretty courtyard. This is a hotel that I feel is suitable for all ages and types of people
