    « Great stay »

We stopped for two nights on our way back to UK. Good location, great room and friendly and professional staff. The complimentary coffee and cakes in the lobby worth a visit, but only once a day! Hotel in great spot to explore Pau and close to bars, restaurants and shops. Hotel car park as reported on other reviews is challenging to find, and in large vehicle could be tight to drive in and out! Great stay would return and recommend.

« Pleasant surprise! All you need! »

I was a little sceptical before arriving due to the age of the hotel. All until I opened the door to my room with the heavy old fashion heavy key. But my room, 479, was big, renovated, and had everything I needed. Good bathroom, strong wifi signal, dark and quiet when I wanted to sleep,a mini bar, coffee machin etc... The staff was nice, the breakfast was also nice, not too big but big enough and enough choices. The location is central and easy to get by car/taxi and not too far from the train station. All in all I would recommend this hotel for business.

« Overnight stay in Pau »

We stayed for one night in this grand old hotel whilst on a touring holiday of the Pyrenees. Our room was in the tower part of the building and was roughly circular - we loved it. The bathroom was extremely luxurious and very `French' in design. There were lots of antique pieces of French furniture throughout the hotel - gave it a slightly aristocratic feel. A quirky room, slightly jaded, but we would have happily stayed there for longer. Very good reception staff who spoke fluent English. The hotel is well located, in the centre of town. Lots of places to eat in the neighbouring streets and handy for visits to the chateau and old town. Parking is available but you will need to be guided to it by the hotel staff. Breakfast was mediocre - served in an internal room with no windows, modern design - out of keeping with the rest of the hotel.

    « Perfect! »

We loved our stay in this beautiful and historic hotel. The one way system around Pau needs a little negotiating but if you park in a public car park and ask for directions then the staff are so happy to help. The hotel parking is great but be prepared to drive very cautiously to get inside. The hotel lobby is super and the lounge has excellent coffee and an array of sweet treats. I have to say that every member of the staff team were friendly, helpful and had a great sense of humour. Our room was very comfortable with supportive mattresses that allowed us several relaxing nights of sleep. The hotel is very quiet and I suspect that this old building cushions noise with it's solid structure. Our room was spotlessly clean and also contained a super coffee machine. Plenty of storage spaces. The shower room was a little quirky and small with the opaque windows on to the room but after all... this is France! We really enjoyed the decor and it is wonderful to find somewhere that has carpeted stairs with stair rods. A little piece of splendour and a great deal of history contained in this special building. We loved our stay and would recommend. A very special thank you to all the staff because their input made our stay extra special.

    « Quirky old place! »

Yes, it is a funny old slightly ramshackle hotel which could be magnificent but isn't. Best Western would have to spend a fortune to bring it properly up to date and I doubt they'd get a return on it for centuries! However, after being in a mousehole in Biarritz for 3 days, we loved it. Huge room, sofa, chairs at one end, high ceilings, decent bed (far better than BW Biarritz) big, strangely open to the room, bathroom with a weird shower arrangement but no worries, Nespresso machine (all good!) with the only real downside being the inefficient floor standing air con unit in the corner which roared like a dinosaur. You couldn't possibly sleep with it on overnight, hence we woke at 3am in an overheated mess! We cranked the windows open and coped with just the cool night air. We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on the food. Trying to locate the place is tricky as it's buried in the middle of no-entry streets and the parking is underneath another building 50 yards away. The entrance is tight but doable even in our big X3 and it's free! You can see the former grandeur of the place in the public areas and it's quirky and interesting but tired. Nevertheless, location is fab, parking close and the price is ok. We would stay here again and we aren't easy to please! .....oh...and Pau is beautiful!

    « A historic gem in a good location »

If you like your hotels in the style of pre-first world war Grands, Spendides and Continentals - and if you don't Pau may not be your sort of town - I would recommend the Continental. Service of a by-gone age is provided in a beautiful building on a good central location for shops, restaurants etc. Secure parking is a great bonus too - you just have to ignore the traffic signs to get to it though (go through the no entry sign, along the buses only lane etc...).

    « Bad! »

Difficult to get to by car, we were then told that all parking spaces were taken, having been pre-booked. The receptionist then couldn't advise us where to leave our car overnight, as if this had never arisen before! Our room was dated in the extreme, the carpet was dirty and there was a terrible smell, although the bathroom was very clean. We couldn't believe they didn't have a better room for us in what seemed like an enormous and quite empty hotel. The curtains were of hideous fabric and design, and were falling from their tracks. The windows had extra aluminium shutters which looked as if they had seemed like a good idea in about 1972. They totally ruined the look of the original windows. I would not have stayed in this room if I had not already paid. It was depressing and I couldn't wait to leave. Unless they have some better rooms which we didn't see, in my opinion the owners of this hotel should urgently renovate it or sell it. The public rooms were better and breakfast was ok.

    « A superb room in Pau »

For the stuff that actually matters; super-comfortable bed, secure parking, location, cost, etc. the Continental takes some beating. Recommended for travellers like us just passing through or anyone looking to explore the area for a couple of days and although not "luxury" as such, and with a certain faded charm, this Hotel is terrific. Didn't have breakfast but loads of walkable options.

    « Comfort »

This hotel is ideally situated in the centre of a beautiful city. There are plenty of brasseries within walking distance and plentiful shopping. Our room was extremely spacious as was the en suite bathroom and very well appointed. It was high ceiling end and light and airy. A lovely stay and I would highly recommend it.

    « Conference »

Old hotel but good location. Friendly and helpful staff. Room quite big and bathrum with shower good. Near to cafe and restaurants. Lunch in hotel restaurant OK. Breakfast maybe not as what I am used to but enough.

    « Very Central »

Perfect place to stay in central Pau within the old area and pedestrianised. The hotel seems a little dated but rooms were very comfortable with a modern bathroom. We had a meal in the restaurant which was superb. Parking n the old area of Pau was an added bonus. We would definitely stay there again if visiting the area. .

    « Very large room! »

The hotel is an old building, but comfortable. Our room was enormous. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. Pau is an interesting town, part 'Riviera style' but also somewhat run down in some areas. The view of the Pyrenees is lovely, we enjoyed this particularly as we were intending to drive through the mountains the next day. The little funicular is very quaint

« Great location, comfortable hotel! »

Hotel Continental is located in the downtown historic district within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and attractions. The rooms were large - especially compared to other hotels we've been to in Europe. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

    « Sleepless Nights »

This is one of the worst stay during my any hotel stay - I could not sleep because of noise bathroom next room right on top of my head. I did complain to hotel staff who just ignored my complaint. I am extremely disappointed and would not recommend this hotel. I should have cancelled my stay after one night but was extremely busy due to business activities

    « Great location »

You can walk everywhere from this hotel -- except the airport, which is a cab ride away. It's a classic old hotel in the midst of being redone. At least, that's what I assume because my room did not look like anything the hotel promotes, but it was very clean, comfortable and quiet. I especially enjoyed the hotel's restaurant -- locals were lined up outside before it opened every night I dined there -- they always made space for us hotel guests.

    « Superb Service - Absolutley Wonderful »

We were staying in Pau for a rugby match, and as the time of our train arrival gave us just an hour to check in and then get to the match before kick-off I contacted the hotel in advance to see if taxis would be at the station. The wonderful Donna suggested a local driver who would pick us up from the station, take us to the hotel to check in then on to the stadium for the game. Well, Adrien was brilliant and after a laughter-filled drive to the stadium he agreed to collect us afterwards. The hotel is facing the main pedestrianised area in the middle of Pau and is close to plenty of shops. Our room was huge, and overlooked the side street. There were two sets of windows - internal and French onto a Juliet balcony - and these had net curtains, regular curtains and external shutters that kept the light out incredibly well. The room as well decorated and very clean, and had a coffee machine. The bathroom was big with a large corner bath and tap shower, sink and loo. The lift was a bit clanky when you were in it, but we didn't hear much noise from the other rooms. Breakfast was very good but once the scrambled eggs and sausages ran out after 9:45 the lady in charge didn't seem that bothered about replenishing them. The coffee was delicious and there was lots of choice of cereal, fruit, cheese, hams and yogurts. I'd happily stay here again, Nadia and Donna were superb and extremely helpful.

    « This was a weird hotel »

We stayed just one night in our typical travel through France at the start of the year. First, It is not trivial to arrive by car. The hotel is in a closed street and the parking (though free) is in a completely different building. Therefore we had to call and go all the way around until we managed to follow the concierge until the parking. The location is anyway really good, at a short walking distance from the center. The building itself is very old, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and pretty, but not well decorated. The corridors, maybe due to the carpet, are someway in the middle between the shining and Titanic. Our room was the weirdest room we had had in a while. It was round and really big, with some Chinese furniture scattered (mixed with some summer style furniture, and some random pieces) and a bed with a metal frame in one side. It did not look like any of the pictures at all. It had two small dirty sofas (they were comfy, that I will admit), a strange coffee table, a big old closet and a table/vanity. The room had some entryway, where there was no place at all to hang a coat or leave the shoes, but instead was, from all the possible empty spaces of that enormous room, the chosen place to put a fridge. On the other side of the room there was a door that connected to another room. The old beautiful windows of the building had been reinforced with new metallic ones, so you have two completely anachronistic sets of windows completed with some tacky Costa del Sol curtains. The room was also fully carpeted with a weird style. Finally there was an enormous bathroom on the other side. The toilet was separated by some super cute old doors with colorful glass. But the rest was nothing to remember. A Big bathtub, a wash basin and that is all. Very few towels, virtually no toiletries (there was some soap), and a vintage hairdryer fir for a museum. Internet barely ever worked. The breakfast was forgettable. Few options, not healthy, low quality. The breakfast room was also a bit weirdly decorated. The staff was nice overall. All in all, the building has amazing bones but the rest is not so nice. However, it is cheap and very well located, so the decision is yours.

    « Great value 3 star hotel »

We stayed here on our way down to Spain and found the hotel to be very comfortable and well located on the edge of the old city. The hotel has an olde world charm, rooms are large and the front desk very helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

    « Classic 3-stars hotel »

As the title goes, this place is not more and not less than a standard 3 stars hotel. Very good central location (even though I could't find the hotel's main entrance from the street), affordable prices and lovely front desk lady who literally guided me via mobile when lost in the old city centre. However, the rooms do not offer many comforts which are now standard in other hotels belonging to the same category and thereofore should be modernized. The bed was hard and the bathroom small. The breakfast salon is cheerless and the food nothing fancy. Free (small) private garage.

« Excellent Town Centre Hotel »

Stayed here for one night as a stop over driving back to the UK from Spain. The hotel is really well placed with plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance. Our room was spotless, quiet and in the distance we could see the Pyrenees. Breakfast was plentiful witter a wide choice of food. I would certainly stay here again.

« Best Western Continental (Pau) Excellent value! »

This hotel represents excellent value. It was within the downtown area for easy walking access to the sights. Rooms were comfy and the staff were excellent. The breakfast buffet was sufficient - but not in the huge American style.

    « A delightful hotel »

This charming hotel offers large, elegant rooms, a lovely breakfast, a perfect location, and friendly staff. They accommodated our group by preparing a special meal for a party, and assured everyone was comfortable throughout the stay of three days.

« Great location in the heart of Pau »

The Hotel Continental is conveniently located in the heart of the old city, in walking distance of the Chateau Henry IV. Lots of great shopping and restaurants, also in easy walking distance. It is an older property in the "grand old hotel" style, that has been updated to include ensuite bathrooms and elevators. You get one old-fashioned key that you can leave at the front desk when you go out. There is a nice lounge off the main lobby where our group of about 20 people who had arrived separately was able to gather and plan who was going where with whom. The decor is a bit dated, and the stairway carpets are kind of worn, but the place is kept quite clean and decent. It is also nice and quiet, despite being right downtown. The restaurant was closed the Sunday evening when we all arrived, but they had agreed (in advance, of course, we didn't just show up) to open up for us and serve us dinner, which was excellent. A full, hot breakfast is included, and, in good old Best Western style, we could get scrambled eggs and sausage - the only place during our three-week trip through France that this was an option. Complimentary tea is available 24/7 in the lounge off the main lobby. The free in-room wifi was a bit spotty, but it worked enough of the time for our purposes. Free parking in a secure garage about a half-block away. The front desk gives you a code to enter. The entry is quite narrow and the number of spaces is limited, but we managed to get our rented Fiat in and out without damage to our own or other vehicles. It helps to have a second person with you to get out and guide. If there is no more space you are allowed to block others as long as you leave the key at the front desk so that it can be moved to let others out. We didn't need to do that and didn't observe anyone else doing it during our stay. Because old city Pau is a maze of one-way and closed-to-vehicles streets, it was quite tricky to get to the hotel the first time. The GPS directed us to enter such a closed street. With great difficulty and much swearing, we managed to find another way around to the hotel. The front desk staff told us to ignore the "do not enter" signs and when we followed a friendly resident of Pau back to the hotel one time, she went right in against the "do not enter" sign, too, so I guess that's allowed in order to access the hotel.

    « Great hotel »

Fabulous hotel well positioned in Pau. We had a lovely greeting at reception and a scenic walk was suggested to us. The rooms were large and quiet. The breakfast was also good value. Pau is a delightful town to visit. The hotel also had parking near by.

    « Marvellous »

The position is perfect, just touching the town centre. Quiet and peaceful at night. Welcome excellent from mulitlingual staff. Rooms spacious and clean. No air con, but silent fans do the trick nicely. Mini-bar with NORMAL prices if you wish. Nice bath/shower room. Breaffast excellent, restaurant attached first class (shut Sunday evening).

« Great hotel to stay in Pau! »

Beautiful old building, old world charm, rooms were spacious and stunning. The Staff were amazing, very friendly, and helpful. Breakfast every morning was delicious, great location, within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Good value for money. Nice part of town. Would definitely come back again!

« Lovely hotel in a beautiful city »

The hotel is perfectly situated for walking around Pau, we wish we'd stayed longer. There is parking nearby, go to reception and they will show you where it is and give you a code, it's easy to find once you know how! We had a nice big room on the fifth floor and the view was lovely, we could even see the Pyrenees! Excellent value for money and e staff were superb too.

« Beautiful olde worlde charm »

Loved this place, in a beautiful building which is full of period features (especially in the common areas). The bedroom was enormous with a sofa & 2 chairs. Looked out on to the back of the hotel which is a bit shabby, but compensation in the form of the Pyrenees rising magically in the distance. Bathroom very nice, although having a shower over a corner bath is not the safest arrangement in the world, would have much preferred a walk-in shower. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Lovely breakfast with a huge range of different foods. Parking in a basement garage a few doors away from the hotel, might be difficult to get a place at busy times.

Located very central to downtown. Walk everywhere. Rooms very large by Europe standards. Clean. Good wifi. Solid breakfast. Excellent hotel. Parking is a bit of a pain but not a significant issue. Highly recommend.

    « Not a lot of effort »

Stayed for three nights with friends. Room ok, windows have a low sill and while a bar is across the bottom still dangerous for children, windows and shutters need replacement and overall hotel needs investment. Carpets on stairs are threadbare on steps. Breakfast poor and no effort from staff in restaurant to understand English as it would result in extra work in having to fry or poach an egg or to so better play dumb. Reception staff very helpful though and great location which perhaps has resulted in complacency from management.

Hotel was above expectations. Excellent experience. Very fancy Historic hotel with the most friendly service. Rooms were very comfortable, spacious and beautiful. Location was within a quick walk to the castle and old town.
