« Perfect location but damp smell in the room »

Best Western Karl Johan is located on Oslo's most famous street in the very heart of the city within walking distance to most attractions in Oslo. There is a metro station, Stortinget, 200 meters from the hotel and the main railway station is less than 10 minutes by foot. This is an old historic hotel with a lovely facade and magnificent staircase. Staff was friendly and helpful. Free and fast Wi-Fi. Free coffee and tea in the lobby. Breakfast was good but nothing special. Negatives My room had a damp smell from something like old wet carpet. I had to open the window to get some fresh air, which also let in the sounds from the street. Bathroom was old and dull with a depressing yellow fluorescent lightning.

« Location is great - if you want to enjoy the city center »

Best Western Karl Johan is a quite old hotel, with a great location in the middel of the city center. Had a nice room (considering the age) and also surprisingly quiet considering the location at Karl Johan. Breakfast can be improved with bigger selection, but quality was okay. Would recommend to check in at this hotel if you get a nice price, and would like to enjoy the city center of Oslo.

« Nice hotel for a budget night »

Location is perfect and the room was nice and clean. Breakfast was a positiv experience. The reseption area is what mainly pulls down my rating. It looks dirty and old, and gives you a wrong impression of the hotel.

    « Excellent location. 3.5 stars »

We took the train from the airport into national theatret station and the hotel is a short walk from there. No taxi required. Warm and welcoming greeting staff. Breakfast was fantastic! Lovely freshly made breads (still warm) and a good assortment of fresh fruits, as well as freshly made waffles, fresh sunny side up eggs and nice crispy bacon. We did not get the street side rooms, so were not affected by noise. I liked the extra provided - helping yourself to free coffee/tea whenever you want. As previously commented on - hotel is right in the centre of action, and has lots of cafes, restaurants and shops at its doorstep. Negative: The hotel is aged, and needs a little updating.

    « Fantastic location, terrible sound-proofing! »

The location was fantastic- great for exploring the City, galleries and museums. It is close to buses, trains and ferries. The breakfast was decent and convenient. The staff were helpful and friendly (though on check out the guy at the desk spoke only to husband regarding our booking- despite the fact that it was under my name LOL). The building is in good condition, clean, and the rooms are relatively spacious. Our rooms had a massive window overlooking the street, which was pretty cool. The wifi is also excellent. Unfortunately there is one reason why we will not stay there again- the noise from the pubs downstairs is terrible! We stayed Friday and Saturday nights (after 24hrs of travelling) and could not sleep. There were people partying and yelling out in the streets until about 4am (Norwegians party hard!). Traffic started up again around 3am (presumably people picking up their drunk friends), so there was a lot of honking and cars as well. It's a shame, because the hotel itself was pretty good. I would have given it 4 out of 5, had it not been for the noise.

« Good and Bad.... depends on where you room is located »

First off, I can not say enough great things about this hotel. We took the metro into the city and you come up the ramp, make a left on the main street and walk a short distance to the hotel. You kind of can't believe it's location. It is right on the pedestrian only street that runs from the parliament down to the palace. Filled with shops, restaurants, and a park. It is probably the best location one could hope for. You can walk to everything and the view from my room was on the street side so you had a picturesque window looking out on the park. Yummy food and all the sights right there. The staff was great, friendly and helpful at checkin/out. Smiling and greeting when entering everyday...I was just blown away with this hotel overall. My one complaint was how loud it was at night. Being that we were right over the street we could hear people talking and the music was so loud we couldn't sleep until they stopped at 4am. The hotel rectified this situation for us, which I was thrilled about. It's a catch 22, I wanted that beautiful view but you have to be able to sleep. It was warm and with no ac you need the windows open. Even with the windows closed the music was too loud. Thank you BW for helping us out with this problem and to the guests wanting to stay here, please do...just don't stay on the side of the hotel facing the street. You will love the location and the staff!!!! I would stay here again.

    « 3.5 stars »

The GOOD: decent breakfast, which is free. Free coffee and tea in the business lounge and first floor any time of the day. Comfortable rooms, free wifi, friendly staff, phenomenal location on Karl Johan street (which is literally down the street from the royal palace). The NOT so great: it's a hotel with a lot of "charm", which is to say that it's very old and frankly in need of some maintenance. The bathroom heated floor in our room didn't work and the carpeting is dirty. The wiring is run outside the wall, which really speaks to the age of the place. Overall, it's average. Good value and location, but iffy hotel quality as most best westerns are.

« A little too close to everything »

For a younger demographic, this might be an OK hotel. For seniors like my wife and me, it wasn't a great choice. First, we got a room on the second floor and almost directly over the entrance. Karl Johans gate is very lively, next door to a couple of sidewalk cafes and with lots of motor traffic. On a warm September night, the windows had to be open and the noise was unpleasant. (It was also noisy the next morning.) Second, the bathroom had one of those quaint high-walled bathtubs. When you're young and limber, maybe that's OK; in your 70s, taking a shower shouldn't be a life-threatening experience. The breakfast room was small and crowded, offering a standard Scandinavian selection with the addition of sunny-side-up eggs cooked hard. The front-desk staff were fine, but perhaps the desk could have been staffed with more than one person. Sometimes several guests needed attention at one time. The staff did find us a quieter room for our second night--no view, and a steady hum from the ventilation system outside, but far more peaceful. If we were to revisit Oslo, we'd certainly look for a quieter, more modern hotel a bit farther from the city center. The city's public transit system is good, and got us where we wanted to go without much fuss. But younger, more affluent visitors might find the Best Western Karl Johan very acceptable.

    « Sorry I picked this hotel »

As I sit here at 2:40 AM in the hotel, on my second night, I've resigned to the fact that I made a mistake. With two more nights to go in Oslo, I am looking to see if I can simply check out, eat the 2 more nights at this hotel and get some sleep and rest somewhere else. I'm a Diamond Member in Best Western and have stayed at numerous Best Westerns around the world. Here are my grievances regarding this hotel: - Small rooms with barely any storage for clothes, to hang or put in a drawer. - After flying 16 hours all I wanted to do was eat and sleep. I attempted to order room service at 7:00 PM and was told that the restaurant was too busy for room service and to come down. - The bathroom is small and outdated. No amenities, i.e. Lotion, shampoo, etc. The bathroom contains the all-in-one bath, gel, shampoo bottle in the shower. - The TV has just a handful of channels. And the worst of all is the music that plays at night. As mentioned earlier it's 2:47 AM at this time and am wide awake because of the loud music now playing for a second night in a row. I don't recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Oslo.

« Excellent service superb location »

Good value for money. A bit noisy on lower floors. Staff is one of the bast I have encountered, very helpful for the business traveler. Good breakfast. Building just marvelous, rooms not much so. Avoid near by bars and restaurants, too touristic.

    « Good enough »

good enough hotel, great location, good breakfast buffet, comfortable beds, slight down side is noise from revellers on a Saturday night, so if this puts you off, choose a hotel a few streets back, it didn't bother me, the young chap at reception has a great easy going character and makes booking in and enquiries no problem for him at all

« BW Karl Johan Oslo in September - a little expensive »

The Karl Johan BW is an OK hotel in a very good location in central Oslo. The rooms were OK but, to be honest, dated when compared to the competition. I was stunned to be presented with a stand up fan in the room rather than have air conditioning - particular when this hotel averaged 1600 NOK per night. However, the staff are professional, the hotel is clean and the breakfast is very good. The bottom line is that there are just better 'value for money' places to be had in the local area.

    3
    « horrible customer service »

When I request upper floor with view I DON'T expect to be offered corner room with interior views or second floor room. Did not appear to be a/c at all and must be uncomfortably hot in evening. Location was excellent but other hotels within blocks.

    4
    « Great location »

Just a short walk from the main train station towards the city. Easy to find with the blue flags fluttering outside. Receptionist was very helpful and the hotel itself is very quaint and well kept. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and the wifi worked fine.

    « Location, Location, Location »

During our tour of Scandinavia, I would consider this both one of the best experiences and values of the trip. You couldn't possibly find a more ideal location - facing the central plaza which is bookended by the Parliament and the National Theater. Our gigantic double windows opened over this beautiful scene. Virtually all of the major museums and attractions are within walking distance. Our room was luxurious (especially the linens), the service excellent, and the extensive (included) breakfast was both delicious and a lifesaver in a city where a hamburger, beverage, and fries for two can easily cost $100. For an extra $10 you could pack a box lunch from the buffet! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

    4
    « Super well situated »

The Best Western Hotell is super well situated right on Karl Johan street. Although it is a bit scruffy with endless corridors (reminding me of Faulty Towers) the service is very good and so is the breakfast. There was a big water damage outside the bathroom door, there was no wifi, but I enjoyed my stay nevertheless.

    4
    « Smashing location »

A very nice and old stylish hotel in the middle of the main street in Oslo. The location is as central as one could get it. Rooms are nice and clean, and the price is not as bad location taken into consideration. A bit odd that breakfast is served as late as 0700, but no nig deal. Will definately come back.

    5
« Great location Excellent staff »

This hotel ticks all the right boxes , the hotel is in a great location right in the heart of Oslo, lots of restaurants, bars , sights with 5-10 minutes walking distance. Its very easy to reach from the Airport Direct train to Nationaltheatre and then just 5 minutes walk to the hotel. The rooms are very good for a 3 star hotel , very clean decent size bathroom, room and bed. The hotel has a business lounge on 3rd floor with free Tea/Coffee which is good to wind down its also free, the lounge is big enough and almost always empty. The best is staff Ms. Dora is a gem she took enough time to explain me all before coming to the hotel like transport options etc. Room types other options. Ms. Diane you should contact for any tips on what to do in Oslo her ideas are brilliant she is patient and very helpful. A big plus if traveling first time in Oslo. Both of them them are wonderful and make travel smooth. Will surely stay here again when traveling in Oslo again.

« The best location in Oslo »

Five minutes from the palace of the King and close to the central rail station. It's better not to come with a car. There are restrictions on using cars in the near streets.Under the hotel there is a restaurant - EGON - with reasonable prices (taking in consideration that you are in Norway). The breakfast in the hotel was lovely. Moreover, the team of the hotel was very helpful. Good value per money.

« Fantastic location but avoid room 418 »

This hotel had good sized rooms and is situated right in the Main Street for the palace and restaurants. It was easy to catch the train to national theatrett, don't get off at central station. A short walk through the park and you are there. Make sure you have a look in the deli next door. Quick food and drinks that you can take away to your room or to the park. Lots of food places as well but don't believe the reviews that say Norway doesn't expect tips, these places asked straight out how much you were adding. The Karl Johan has tea and coffe on both the ground and third floor that you can access yourself. Now room 418 is a perfectly good room except it has the spotlights for the hotel each side of your window. And the blackout curtains don't quite stop the glare coming in.

« In the heart of OsLo »

Good value for money, location wise, for sure. Breakfast is ok, rooms clean. When you want a top location an a top of the bill hotel, just choose the most expensive. This is good value for money. And yes when you are in the cetre of a Town, there will be more noise the on a farm. You will hear people party.

    5
    « Fantastic central location »

This hotel is located about ten minutes walk from Oslo central station. Our room was on the 5th floor overlooking Karl Johan, it was spacious and comfortable with a massive flat screen TVs. Breakfast is included which I was pleased with, however the quality and choice was exceptional offering smoked salmon, cold meats, cheese, olives, various types Oslo eggs, massive choice of bread, fresh fruit, freshly cooked waffles etc Wow. What I liked about this hotel is the fantastic central position a stone throw fro Aker Brygge and all the main sights, the friendly service and is also reasonably priced. Had a great weekend.

    3
« The hotel is in a great location on the park in downtown Oslo. »

Great location, easy to get to all of the downtown locations and tourist attractions. One disappointment is "guest laundry". When any hotel, and especially a Best Western, mentions guest laundry one would expect a "guest laundry". One does not expect the ability to send laundry out to get back in a few days. Please take this off your website or be prepared to offer what anyone would expect with a "guest laundry" service. The ability for the guests to do their laundry on site. Is it complicated? I think not. Get it off of your website or expect more guests to be disappointed by your services.

« Great Location, nice hotel! »

I stayed for one night at the hotel, the location is perfect, right in the center of Oslo. I have felt the room was so hot when we went back at night though it was cold outside! There was a fan in the room but the trick is if you open the window and the door for a minute, done! :) rooms are spacious.. Breakfast was basic, nothing special except for the fresh waffles! Last but not least, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful especially Irene at the front desk, she was so cheerful and energetic..

    « BW Karl Johan »

Ok, so the first thing, if you're driving the KJH doesn't ha e a car park - there is one about 10 min walk away and will cost NOK320 for the night. Secondly, don't get a room facing the square - 1am & 3am the roads are cleaned by not the quietest of equipment. You also have a bunch of busy bars/restaurants below you. As you'd expect from a BW, the KJH is suitable for your basic needs and doesn't really support too many pleasantries. The rooms are small but functional, with shower, desk, TV, wardrobe and a bed. The bed is actually quite comfy, I just hate the way you get two duvets but you do get to use the other pillow if travelling alone. Being a single serving traveller, my budgets/expenses are limited so spending consecutive nights on the tiles are out of the question. This leaves me with the room and a TV. So as I said, the room is clean but not very spacious - I could live with it. What I struggled with is the TV was limited to a choice of channels from BW - disappointing but not the end of the world. I've seen some travellers rave about the breakfasts, this I can't understand why - it's ok if you like that sort of thing I guess. In terms of location, it's great. You walk out to the centre of Oslo with all public requirements immediately available. At the end of the day, it's clean and the bed is good. Which was good enough for me.

    « Well situated »

Pleasant hotel, centrally placed with easy access to train station, the Nation Theatre and station are 2-3 minutes walk and the main station 10-15 minutes walk, giving easy access to other places and airport. They do a very good breakfast, hot and cold food. The rooms a rather small but acceptable. There is free tea and coffee in the foyer. Pleasant helpful staff. The hotel is situated on an avenue come plaza with gardens and fountains in the middle. A short walk takes you down to the sea.

    1
    « Don't stay here in summer »

There are no airconditioners and unless you have a room in the inner courtyard you will be forced to sleep with the windows closed to keep the noise from the streets out. We did have a freestanding fan in the room, but it just swirled the heat around. Breakfast was just as uncomfortable despite the fact that the staff had placed several freestanding fans around. Interestingly, the reception area is airconditioned! It was far cooler to go outside and sit under the trees than try to stay in the hotel. Come on Best Western - install airconditioners. We won't be back Suggest you stay at a hotel off the main road if it doesn't have aircon.

    3
    « Good location »

The location of the hotel is great, right in the middle of the tourist action. The hallways and common area are worn and could use repair. The room was clean but very plain. The picture is just one example of many of the repair and updating the hotel needs. Staff was helpful at front desk and breakfast was good.

    3
« Hot room at the top »

The hotel is well located within easy reach of the central station and near the Parliament and Royal Palace. There are a lot of restaurants nearby and the waterfront is a short walk away. There is no air conditioning in the rooms; this is probably OK most of the time, but it was very hot in Oslo towards the end of July and the room was very hot. A fan is provided, but it doesn't cool the room. The rooms do not have coffee or tea facilities, but near reception there is coffee and tea. Ice is available from the same area that breakfast is served. Breakfast was good with a wide variety to choose from. It can get very busy later in the morning.

    5
« Great location, lovely staff and great breakfast »

The hotel is centrally located 5 minutes walk away from the Cultural HistorynMuseum and also ferry to Museum Island. The staff are very friendly, knowledgable and helpful, the rooms clean and comfortable and the breakfast is excellent especially the freshly made waffles

« Very good location, nice building »

We booked two rooms for a stay of 3 nights. The property is a classic building very well located close to the train station where the train from the airport operates (then we found out that there is a closer station). The neighborhood is really nice, parks and very many restaurants are at your front door. A commercial area is meters away, same thing with the Royal Palace, the docks, etc. Transportation to main attractions is to be found very close to the hotel as well. Our double room was very spacious, mainly compared to the standard in Scandinavia, it was clean, and in very good working order. We even had a minibar, complimentary coffee, tea and the basics. "Almost a wardrobe" was available (scandinavian hotel room design got rid of classic wardrobes and drawers many years ago,,,,)The single one was also spacious and in the same very good conditions. We liked the building very much, it is very nicely decorated, framed portraits, classic furniture, soft carpets are all over the place. All in very good condition. The main staircase was my favourite feature. Reception staff always available and very friendly. Breakfast is good, but the facility can get a little crowded. All in all a very pleasant experience in a very nice city.

    4
« Good location and excellent breakfast »

This hotel is well located to walk to all the sights and to the train station. The street is pedestrian in summer so it was quiet from the traffic. The main noise came from the fact that our room was over the sports bar so every evening football was on it got noisy late at night. Breakfast was lovely and the hotel is a fine old building. The receptionist could have been more polite when we arrived but otherwise the staff were helpful.

    4
    « Central location »

Loved Oslo especially the Opera House, and surrounding area. Very good for a long weekend trip. Start saving Norway is expensive but worth it. Hotel room small but well designed, in central location. Hope to go again soon.

    « Great location - average room. »

This is a charming hotel in an excellent location. Situated very near the university and on a sidewalk lined with cafes, it's a nice place to spend one or two evenings. The room was a little dated and the front desk staff were rather cold. Breakfast was very good. I would stay here again. It's comfortable.

    4
« Very nice start to our Scandinavian vacation »

The location was terrific, and very easily accessible for transport to and from airport and getting to major sights. We had a Junior Suite, and it was very spacious and clean. The front desk staff was very helpful. Breakfast buffet was plentiful and tasty.

    3
« Not bad but expect a little more for the price »

Great location (downtown but only a mile from the waterfront and close to public transport), with traditional façade, but limited wifi, limited eating options, small rooms, no gym. It is what it is though, good to use for a base for sleeping and heading-out each day to explore or do business.

    4
    « Fantastic Location/Comfortable »

Location is right on the pedestrian mall that runs from the train station to the palace. Lots of places to walk to for sightseeing and food (albeit, tourist food). Stayed in a single room - larger than most European single rooms (twin bed, desk, couch). Could not get the air conditioning to work, but opening the window was fine (noise might bother light sleepers). Room was clean. Shower was a walk-in, not a tub (which was great). As is usual in Europe, there no vanity to put your items in the bathroom. The breakfast buffet was extensive and varied. It did not change day to day, but there were so many different options, you can vary your meal over the course of days. Never see anything like this in the states for a like priced hotel. Front desk folks were very polite and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

« Karl Johan Best Western Hotell »

The location is absolutely terrific. Within walking distance of most of the main sites and attractions (the National Gallery, the Akershus Fortress, the Royal Palace, and the ferry docks, to name a few), and directly on the main pedestrian thoroughfare in the city. The hotel is basically average when compared to most European hotels, and you can see where the rooms have been renovated to include private bathrooms. VERY comfortable beds. There is no parking at the hotel. The closest parking is at the Grand Hotel across the street. EXPENSIVE!!! It cost me more to park each day (400 NOK) than I was paying for the rental of the car.

    4
« Great value and location »

A perfect location in the heart of town. The clean room with enough space for two was nicely decorated and all the public areas were well maintained. Complimentary tea and coffee was a nice touch. Fresh breakfast buffet was well presented and very good. Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful.

    3
    « Average hotel - nothin notable »

Very average hotel. Gives a basic night's sleep, food and peace. Nice tea corner in the foyer, but very limited public space found to meet with colleagues, so we ended up working in the front window of the hotel reception. Watch out for parking - as they close the roads to keep the streets car free - so parking is a 10-15 minute walk away.

  • 5
« Great hotel, centrally located »

The hotel is in the best possible downtown location. There is a lot of sightseeing and shopping within easy walking distance. They have a breakfast buffet with all sorts of Norwegian food. It was fantastic! The central location comes with a price - noise. When we were there, there was a lot of activity below on the street. There is no air-conditioning, so if it's summer, you'll want the windows open. There are three solutions. 1. Get a room facing the inside of the building. 2. Use earplugs. 3. Close the windows and use the fan. We wanted a room facing the street, so I chose earplugs a couple of nights. I slept great. We chose option 3 (close the windows and use the fan). That worked well also.

    5
« Access and parking nightmare »

Do not use this hotel if you are driving your own car Parking is a major walk from the hotel in a central parking area No facilities to drop luggage I have canceled my return visit to this hotel Beyond that the hotel itself is good and up to standard

    4
« Great Location In Central Oslo »

Great location in the main street of central Oslo. Busy area with shops and restaurants around. Central station about 7-10 mins walk. Very nice choice of savoury or sweet at the breakfast buffet. Very friendly staff. While checking, they've asked us if we wanted a quiet room and we accepted, especially because Friday nights are really noisy and busy. We were grateful because we enjoyed the quietness of the room. Although the view was facing the back buildings, it didn't matter since we were pleased with the bed, bathroom and general condition of the room. Unfortunately, there was no air co and it was a very hot day but we were able to leave the window open.

    5
« In the middle of everything in Oslo »

The hotel sits between 2 stations - the central and the national theater-making it truly accessible. It was also located where almost everything -dining, shopping, site seeing and jsut chilling our - was happening. For both leisure and business the hotel is in a great location. Let me also note that breakfast was generous not only in portions but as well as in daily selections. Finally, internet access was relatively easy to make and was quite fast. Truly enjoyed my stay at this property

« Great hotel in city center - transportation option »

We stayed at this hotel in May 2016 for two days. The hotel is in a central location and pretty grand. Everything is satisfactory. We arrived in the midst of a hotel strike. The hotel coped with it when we were there but apparently had to close soon after we left. The hotel is actually located significantly nearer to the National Theater train station than to the Oslo central train station. So if you are coming to (or leaving from) this hotel from the airport, you should buy your ticket to the theater station and thereby save you the hassle to drag your luggage from the Oslo S station.

« Good location, peaceful nights, friendly service and English Breakfast tea! »

The BW Karl Johan Hotel is situated in the centre of Oslo within easy walking distances of cafes, restaurants and public buildings which normally attract tourists. If you wish to travel around a little, the Hop-on Hop-off bus has a stop close to the hotel. The Hotel offers a good breakfast, spacious rooms and service. We asked for a quiet position and ended up on the fourth floor facing inwards towards an inner quadrangle. The room was perfectly clean and well maintained but somewhat sparse with high ceilings. Our room (411) provided an excellent base for our three night stay and we were rarely bothered by any noise ? none at all from the street ? with windows open we could hear air conditioning from the ground floor. It is provided with a good sized working desk, refrigerator and a sitting area with settee and two arm chairs. The room does have a step across the middle separating the seating from the sleeping area and a further step into the shower room; this may be an issue for some. The shower room has no shelving and only soap/shampoo is provided by units on the wall. The shower itself is first rate, though there is not a grab rail for those of us with suspect balance. The breakfast offers hot and cold options and although essentially small, covers a fair choice. We enjoyed all of the ones we tried. Service in this area is a little sporadic and the provisions are not always topped-up immediately. Having no Norwegian, the milk varieties confused me more than once! There is free wifi in the rooms, a luggage room and a business centre where one can make a cup of tea (choice of Twinings teas) or coffee at any time. As English Breakfast drinkers, we found this priceless. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the BW Karl Johan Hotel and strongly recommend it.

    « Good location »

Well located hotel in central square near metro station and coast. Rooms basic and in particular bathrooms cramped and faded. Free, fast wifi. Friendly, efficient service. Reasonable breakfast buffet with good selection of sandwiches.

« Out of adversity comes opportunity..Ben Franklin »

Christian and the young lady who was his associate at the front desk were outstanding and performed well under adverse conditions. At the end of our 3rd day in Oslo we returned to the hotel to discover that we had to leave because management was closing the hotel as a result of the labor strike currently affecting many Norwegian hotels. Christian and his associate found another hotel for us about a block away. We paid for the four nights we had contracted for and we were provided a significantly superior room at the replacement hotel. All in all, what could have been a significant customer relations problem turned into a positive memorable event.

    « Suprisingly good. »

Stayed here for three days. It is situated in the Main street in Oslo, close to the royal castle and the norwegian parliament. I was thinking it would be a noisy stay, but we were not bothered at all. Could of course be because we stayed there during normal week days in the low season, but it was a positive experience for me. Buffet breakfast in the morning was very good, other meals we had to get elsewhere. Coffemachine in the lobby where you could grab and go out into the city. Will definetely stay here again.

    « Basic, Clean, Old Feel..Super Location »

Stayed in standard double. I found rooms small though clean, linens clean and hygienic. Rooms dont have ventilation thus at times suffocating. Excellent location but rooms on road can be noisy coz of bars below so you may have to keep windows closed during summer season. Hotel is does not have modern feel but still decorated in old ways. Rooms lack decor. Over all just fine.

« Great location, friendly & efficient staff, comfortable room »

This hotel is centrally located and we found our room very comfortable. The staff were excellent, especially as we didn't find them at their best. The current strike of hospitality staff in Norway meant that we had to move hotels after one night of a three night stay, as the hotel was unable to stay open. The staff were unflappable, reassuring and made arrangements for us to stay in suitable accommodation elsewhere. They say, if you want the real measure of your people put them under pressure. The front desk staff here coped well in what could have turned into a crisis. Two minor issues: The wifi was inconsistent & the fabric of the hotel is starting to show its age a bit.

    3
    « Central location »

The hotel is old and a bit tired looking with really small rooms, especially the single rooms which are tiny. However the location is very central and difficult to get better which is probably the reason for the high room charge, the rooms certainly do not warrant the price. Rooms at the front can be a little noisy late into the night although this is mitigated by good double or more glazing on the windows, not much help though is you like fresh air.

    2
    « Small room »

Our room was incredibly small with a view on the equipment of the hotel and included the noise of the same equipment. There was just enough room for the bathroom door to close. All this at a rate of more then € 200,00 per day.

« Central Location in the middle of Karl Johan »

We spent three nights here and would happily stay again. We were allocated a room on the 4th floor with a view of the park, castle and the Town Hall. It is truly very central. As we were on the upper level, the noise from the revellers outside was not a problem. The beds were very comfortable. We had a settee, table and a comfortable chair. Plenty of luggage space. The hotel strike broke out on our 2nd day, but this hotel did not close and management appeared to cover all tasks needed to keep the hotel running. The breakfast was very good and our compliments to the one person dealing with the food and clearing up. All the staff were very sweet and helpful except the grumpy night-porter on duty when we arrived close to two in the morning. There is free Wifi but it is far from adequate.

« Perfect location for business or pleasure »

I travelled to Oslo at least once a month for business and always stayed in this hotel. Perfect central location close to offices, restaurants, bars and the lively Aker Brygge port area. There are some small, cheap rooms at the back of the hotel, but for a little extra you can get a deluxe room with a window on the street which is well worth it. The receptionist were always very helpful and friendly and welcomed me every time I can back and the breakfast was simple but always hot and fresh. Made the trips away so much better.

    4
    « Basic but pleasant »

I stay for a few days at this hotel while attending a conference. The room, a single, was not large but was quite adequate and clean. I had a room away form the street for quite, and I never heard any street noise. The location is excellent, in the midst of the city center. Short walk to the theater train stop, and easy walk to the main station. The breakfasts were good, with some warm items as well as cold. On weekends the breakfast room did not open until 8:00, though, so getting a very early start for the weekend was not possible if you wanted breakfast first. But, I think that is a practice at other hotels in Oslo, as well. The staff I met were all pleasant. Overall, I had a good stay and would be happy to stay there again.

    « Great location! »

The location was perfect, the hotel was good, the ceilings were high, and very big windows, you can seat and watch outside with joy. the inside design was romantic. Only bad thing :The beds were incredibly terrible!! For one night we dared it but for long stay it will be not okey.

« Outstanding location; very nice staff - beware of really warm weather! »

We booked here at the summer equinox by chance - longest day of the year and also freakishly warm for Oslo. We had a beautiful view of the park, but when it got hot (which they said is very rare and I believe them) there is no air conditioning, they ran out of fans the first night and we had to sleep with (large!) windows open. Challenge: there is a very "hot" cafe outside and amplified guitar music and everyone loudly enjoying the evening and it was brutal to get our jet-lagged self to sleep. Staff did all they could; second night was better. Very clean rooms if a bit run down. Breakfast was excellent. Easy 20 minute walk from train station and close walk to everything else.

« Great locations, rooms need an update »

We spent three nights in Best Western Karl Johan Hotel in February 2016. Location is great on the main street. Easy to walk and just minutes away from subway. Breakfast was good with salmon and waffles as the best part. We had a room facing Karl Johan and we had no nice issues.. On this particular week room prices were really reasonable for Norwegian hotel. Hotel is in old building and gives it certain charm but somehow it looked a little bit fake. Rooms need an update. Not sure how knowledgable staff was - I heard a quest asking why there were read little cabins outside and some other 'building' work. All this was for Biathlon World Championships - happening and the receptionist did not know...

    « Very very Noisy »

Pros Great location smack in the middle of Oslo with close access to National Theater Station. Comfort This hotel is due for renovation and the room I had that "great" old hotel dust smell with worn wall to wall carpet. Trams run outside the hotel from 0600 to 0100 hours every 2-5 minutes and even with the windows close you are hard pressed getting any sleep. I forgot my earplugs, so 4 hours sleep.. Did i mention the garbage and city service vehicles? No temp regulation possibilities, so you have to open the windows to regulate.. The double-bed was two singles pushed loosely together, so "mind the gap" or you will end up on the floor. Room also had some stairs that might not agree with everyone. No iron in the room either. Breakfast Not sure what I paid for. After 4hours sleep I just wanted to get out of there...

Unfriendly girl at the reception, I've got not the room categorie I booked (lower, only after heavy complaints she gave me what I' ve booked. My Best Western status was not recognized so all benefits were not given. Breakfast poor. Never again.

« Great hotel, affordable, excellent location »

This hotel was excellent. The room, despite being a single, was spacious. The staff was always helpful and the breakfast was quite nice. The location was brilliant: close to everything. Reasonable price.

« Karl Yohan Hotel, Oslo, Norway »

I chose this hotel for a three-day leisure stay and was very happy with that choice. I had a AAA discount which made the cost of the hotel very favourable over lower-cost/less-service options. Both the hotel itself and its location were perfect for my purpose, which was to only use the hotel for sleeping and spend the rest of the day visiting the area. The hotel is very close to the Nationaltheatre train/subway station. It is also centralized within an area that contains restaurents appearing in the Oslo Pass bookllet, which offers all kinds of rebates. I used a single-bed room, which is a bit small, but still quite adequate and comfortable if you are not planning on spending much time in the room. I was also very satisfied with the services offered and staff. There were two nit-picky detractors, but nothing that would prevent me from recommending this hotel.

Well appointed, centrally located and typical of Best Western. Comfortable rooms, friendly, helpful staff. Excellent buffet breakfast choice. Complimentary, good quality hot drinks. Reasonable room rates

« Great location, nice rooms and friendly staff, what else? »

Hotel is old but refurbished, my room was not new but it was comfortable with no big signs of worn; Breakfast was good, simple, but it had everything. Reception staff was young and friendly. Great location and good price for a 3 star hotel.

    « Love it!! »

I can't say anything bad about the hotel. Checked in at the hotel by Cecilie who was just to friendly, for staying for five day she gave me a better room and to be honest with you I couldn't ask for more. The breakfast just wonderful I can't find a fault just magnificent. And we Ausie said just bloody good place.

« Old hotel, but friendly at great location »

The hotel is clearly old and somewhat worn. However, the staff was very friendly, the room was clean, and the breakfast was very nice. It were also plenty of sockets for me to charge phone, pc and loudspeaker. This is not always the case, so thumbs up for this. The location of the hotel is great for shopping, dining, and transport.

    4
    « 4th stay at this hotel »

You really can't beat the location of this hotel. It's a gorgeous area within walking distance to everything one needs. The breakfast is one of the best included buffets. The rooms are clean and the service is excellent.

    3
« Old hotel, great location »

The Best Western Karl Johan is one of the older hotels in Oslo and needs refurbishment. The best things that the hotel has going for it is the breakfast and the location. I stayed in a single room on the 5th floor, the elevators was being repaired so there was quite a bit of walking involved, but that was fine. The single room has a small tv, small bed, couch and a bathroom, basically everything you need when you're on a quick business trip. Prices was fair since this was in December and one of the slower months.

« Literally the Worst Hotel Experience I've Ever Had »

I don't write bad reviews. Ever. I generally find them petty and shrill. I'm writing this so that you don't have the nightmare I had. It was the eve of my birthday. I'd already had a bad airbnb experience my first two nights in Oslo with a bad bed, so I went to check into a hotel. After all, what are you really paying for at the most basic level: a bed. Whether you're playing in it or sleeping in it, you want it to be comfortable. At the front desk, I ask if the beds are comfortable. "Oh yes sir, very comfortable!" gushed Diana. She already heard about the bad experience I was having and how it was my birthday so she said she was giving me a room with a really nice view. I get to the room. It is very small. I look out the window: it is an airshaft, as out of a noir movie to depict the epitome of shabbiness. I go back to the desk. There must be some mistake....? "Oh no, sir, that is one of our better rooms. You don't want a single." [In case you don't know, the people of Norway have low self esteem with regard to the size of their beds. A 'single' is less than three feet wide - basically cot sized (an American twin is 39"-40" wide). And what the call a queen is smaller than an American full/double. Oh, and if you are two people sleeping together, they still insist that you have two separate blankets. As in, they make the bed with a blanket on the left and a blanket on the right. "Why not just share one blanket between two people?" you ask. Because the blankets are the size of hand towels. Again, low bedding self-esteem issues. None of which speaks to the hotel, except insofar as they choose to impose these provincial customs on their guests.] So I go back to the airshaft room. Well, I think, I'm just sleeping, that's fine. I lie down...and discover the torture machine in the room. The bed consists of a piece of foam, not four centimeters thick - less than two inches - and I don't mean nice memory foam, no - if you were packing to move, you would be concerned about packing your dishes in this foam. And the foam is laid over something tantamount to a spiders nest of coils. I don't mean a mattress. And I don't even mean a box spring either, because at least that would just be stiff. No, this is a cauldron of springs that manage both to be soft in the worst ways and hard in the worst ways. No matter what your preference is in a mattress, there is something for everyone here to suffer. So I go back and tell Diana I really can't sleep on this bed. She won't give me a better bed. Okay, I can't stay here. She refuses to refund my money. I try calling other hotels. They are ALL booked. I calmly explain to her that this bed will genuinely hurt my back. She genuinely doesn't care. I ask her if I can take a foam pad from a bed in another empty room to put on my bed as extra padding. No. Can I have extra pillows? No. Can I just have extra blankets? No, no, no. Why not? Because they are locked up. She offers sheets as padding. Literally just sheets - four or even five if I want them. This is a perfect metaphor for her meager thin sense of hospitality. Can I speak to a manager? No. Who is the manager tomorrow (a Saturday)? There is no manager on the weekends. No manager? No. He is just in Mondays through Fridays, and you can e-mail him. I'm in the room now. Drunken kids are running up and down the hallway, knocking on the walls. This hotel is a marvelous approximation of Hell. Avoid it at all costs, even if it means buying a plane ticket out of Oslo: your middle coach seat will be more comfortable than the beds at this hotel.

« Isn't the continental but it's central and affordable »

I styled for business at the hotel. Primarily chosen because of it's central location. Rooms are clean but close to outdated. TV isn't offering much but the wifi is stable well functioning and good enough for streaming which saved the stay. Breakfast is good and of a continental style but without bacon which is to criticise. Egg but no bacon come on you can do better. All in all a nice hotel with some acceptable flaws.

    « Perfect! »

Stayed her with friends while visiting Oslo. We stayed in standard rooms, single and double, and the rooms were spacious and the interior flawless. Breakfast is plentiful and has a wide variety of options. The reception staff, maids and breakfast staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The hotel is placed in the very center of town which is perfect. I greatly enjoyed my stay and I would recommend this hotel.

    « Quite good »

We stayed at the hotel for 5 days. Really good breakfast and good room cleaning. But beds were really, I mean really soft. I have still back problems, because the middle was like a hole. Proce was good too!

« Nice and very quiet »

My husband and I only stayed one night but we were surprised by the calm and the silence of this hotel. The entrance was very elegant and it was possible to quietly chat on armchairs. Breakfast was also extremely good, in a nice environment with very kind staff.

« Affordable hotel in the centre of town »

I stayed here during a business trip and it did the trick. Small, but clean room with a nice bed. Don't expect much else. Breakfast was very nice and worth the trip to the basement. Hoteel is located close to the train stations and direct access to the airport.

    « Great location! »

We stayed at the Best Western Karl Johan on Dec. 27-30. As everyone says, the location is excellent. It is right on Karl Johans Gate convenient to great shopping, the palace, the opera house, etc. Upon check-in, the front desk person informed us that having a car in Oslo is not ideal. We quickly discovered how right she was. She told us how to get to two different parking garages and we managed to find one of them about 5-6 blocks away (although had difficulty finding it again to get our car!) It was 320 NOK which is approximately $36 USD per night to park. We decided to return our car early. Everything we intended to do was within walking distance and there is a train station 1 1/2 blocks away in the park by the National Theater. There are also trams and buses everywhere. We had two rooms and one room was made up for three people. It had two twin size beds and a pull-out that my teenager said was surprisingly comfortable. The rooms are a little worn-out but were spacious by European standards and kept very clean. The bathroom was good sized but weirdly had soap dispensers for the sink and shower. The shower had a combined body wash/shampoo dispenser which did not go well with my teenage girls. I highly recommend packing your own shampoo and conditioner, which I luckily had done. The same front desk person (I'm very sorry I did not find out her name) was also extremely helpful in finding very good restaurants for us the night we arrived and the night before we left. Being in Norway during the days between Christmas and New Year's is not ideal and many places are closed. She was very patient in finding somewhere that was open and still good! They have a very, very good breakfast with a huge selection of foods. It was quite delicious! I recommend the Norwegian waffles, they cook much faster than Belgian and are tastier, and the brown cheese with Wasa crackers or toast. Lovely spacious lobby and also as other have said, free coffee and tea provided with take-away cups!

    « Great location »

Great location close to shops, restaurants and points of interest. Room was clean and comfortable but you had to wait a while for hot water. Breakfast buffet was very good, lots to choose from to suit all tastes. Lovely old building, decor old fashioned but suits the hotel, nice and cosy.

    3
« Clean up the wooden floor, »

The service standard is average. Buffet breakfast in Europe standard is above average. But the most demaging thing is they seldlom perform deep cleaning of their wooden floor, rendering dust and dirt piled up on the wood surface. I stayed in room 316. For two nights days ago.

    3
« Good location, price, breakfast but rude staff »

We stayed at the hotel for 1 night. 15 min walk from the train station. Close to all the attractions..whatever they are in Oslo. We were treated poorly by the Receptionist that checked us in - rude, untrained and impatient Russian lady. The room was very tiny (you can get more space and much better service at Bondenheim hotel around the block). If you plan to take a shower -give yourself at least half an hour to get hot water running. The breakfast was good. If you need to speak to the manager - s/he doesnt exist - no kidding. For the same money and location - I recommend Bondenheim over best Western.

« Wonderful Hotel with a Great Location! »

The front desk staff made us feel at home and treated us like family! Hotel was clean, food was great, beds were comfortable. Best thing about this hotel was the location. Right in the middle of everything! You could walk to restaurants, shops, and the many incredible sights!! Also walking distance to the bus/train/ferry locations. Could not have been more pleased!

« Good location, Historical Building »

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. out room was always cleaned and warm. A good pressured shower, wifi worked well. What we liked most was a great choice of breakfast. This hotel is located walking distance from the train station around 10min. Very convenience for sightseeing, shopping in the city. You can also take the metro brings you to 1 minute away from the hotel. There is a square in front of the hotel which I could see getting ready for a Christmas market. would have been perfect stay for Christmas time.

    « Amazing base camp! »

Having been to Oslo for a weekend city break and finding it hard to get a cheap hotel, this hotel is a great price in a great city! Right in the main Karl Johan gate part of the city, lots within walking distance. Very helpful staff, clean rooms, good breakfast & free coffee to take out and about with you! ( a blessing given an average cup is 4-6gbp!!) Would defiantly return! :)

    « Great Location »

The hotel looks really impressive from the outside and it's a great location right on the main street. Reception area nice as well and all the staff I met were very friendly. I had emailed and asked for a room overlooking the street but was disappointed not to get one. The room had no view and was very small down a really long winding corridor however it was spotlessly clean and had everything in it that I needed. The breakfast was good with a big selection and hot food every day. Free tea and coffee in reception and in the meeting room. I would stay here again but only if the price was right

    « Excellent Hotel »

This Hotel was exceptionally good Value in a very expensive City. The room and rest of hotel very clean. Staff super friendly, and good continental breakfast. Central for trains and buses, 40 miles from airport, transfer time 1 hour. We travelled with ryanair, and flight landed at 23.05 according to reviews we had read we wouldn't be able to get transport to city. As we arrived at airport, there was an express service bus outside. It cost £15.00 pp to Oslo city. It took approx 15 mins to walk to hotel where we received a very warm welcome. There is free tea and coffee in reception, which we took advantage of whenever we went back to our room, you can get a kettle from reception for use in your room at no extra charge. Our room view was of the Air con system, but we weren't in our room too often so that didn't matter. Plenty of hot water great shower. comfortable bed, but beware of steps down into room, put light on as soon as you enter!! Plenty of Resturants and bars, very vibrant city. We spent 4 days here, and it was a very enjoyable trip.

« Small rooms, ridiculous closet and no hot water »

Lets start with something positive! The location of the hotel is very central and very convenient. My problem start when there was no hot water in the room. Ok it happens... the reception told me to change room. Ok so far! There was no second person at the reception so the receptionist ask me to go down to take the new key. Ok I put my pyjams and went ( I thought just one second to grab the key. My first surprise was that she told me to wait to finish the check in.. I said on but I was waiting for the second check in and after there was no client at the reception she prepare the key... telling me if the room is empty!!! How come the room to be empty??? I need both keys to change room... she had already cancelled the first key.... Meanwhile, she told me that they check the room there is hot water... who checked the room? The same person could bring the key in my room... and suddenly a groom came asked me if I need help... yes I need to finish with that. The closet in the first room was tiny, in the second please see the pictures!!! Also, the single bed is small and at the wall !!! To finish with a positive point, there is free wifi, that worked very well.

    « Unbeatable location, friendly receptionists & cheap !! »

We booked this hotel not quite sure how central the location was - we knew it was going to be in the "old town" - but not until we got there did we understand how centrally located it really is. Directly across the road from the national Parliament. In my country, such a location would be very expensive. Pubs and restaurants directly next door. Book in was fast and handled professionally. Lifts worked well. The room contained everything we asked for - slightly small - but I believe by Scandinavian standards would be considered average. There is a step down inside the door and after the bathroom which you would need to watch for - certainly if coming in late from the pub. Bathroom was satisfactory - water temp in the shower tricky to adjust but plenty of hot water. Double-bed means two single beds pulled together [at least in Norway]. We would have preferred a double bed that is physically one bed - but not a major issue. View from Room 213 is interesting and not too noisy. 3rd floor on this side of the hotel [Rosencrantz Gate] might be the optimum room location. Breakfast was great. Very impressed with the always-hot soft-boiled eggs. This is not easy to do - but it was perfect every morning. Disposable eggcups very clever. Scrambled eggs also perfect. Fish choices great - as one might expect from a fishing town. Coffee fantastic. Most people fumbled with the button for the Juice dispenser - but after Day One it's not an issue. Overall a very pleasant experience and if we were coming back to Oslo, would stay nowhere else.

    « Comfortable and friendly »

Looking for a hotel accessible to the central railway station, for incoming from the airport and outgoing to the railway trip to Bergen, we found this hotel very centrally located in Oslo. We walked from central station, which is quite a walk when you are dragging luggage, but if you get the Airport express to the National Theatre station (which is every 2nd airport express) it is a bit closer. The hotel dates from late 19th century, and it must have been a classic in its day. Now it is dated, but the rooms are comfortable and the facilities fine. The reception staff were very accommodating, friendly and efficient. If you want to make coffee or tea in your room, you have to request a kettle and the stuff to go with it. We prefer fresh milk with our coffee, so we bought some at a convenience store next to the hotel. The hotel is close to all major public transport (trains, trams, buses and ferries). Tickets are available from most 7/11 stores and machines in many places. A ticket last you for an hour in 1 zone, which we found handy to jump on a tram and do a mini tour around. Breakfast was included in our room tariff, a lovely buffet breakfast, hot and cold, including the regular food plus a few Norwegian specials such as smoked salmon and various herring dishes. We really enjoyed our stay.

« Perfect location for Oslo Centre »

Although this hotel is a bit dated, it ticks all the boxes. Rooms are spacious and if you are lucky to get one overlooking the main street,Karl Johans Gate, you are in for a treat. I did not see any air-conditioning, so I reckon these rooms facing south and west will feel the strong Summer Sun. Bathrooms are a bit on the small size, and they have also here adopted the combined soap and shampoo dispenser. Rooms are OK, nice stocked mini bar and comfortable beds. Wardrobe was sufficient for one person, 2 would be pressed for space. Free tea and coffee 24/7 in the reception area.Free WiFi all over the property.

Great spot in the Karl Johan area surrounded by restaurants and shopping, located right near the palace & gardens and and an easy walk to the train station and to the Aker Bryg eating/dining area. « Great location »

The location is great close to restaurants shopping malls and many land marks, staff are very helpful and friendly, my room was small and the view was roof tops with engines , sort of gloomy. But the bathroom was of a good size. Free wifi, ironing kit but no kettle . Furniture was worn out and needed replacement . Breakfast was fair , comfortable bed , I think it was overpriced for what it is.. One more thing... Long twisting corridors to reach the room. I want to thank the helpful and cheerful receptionists they were great

« Low-cost hotel in the center of Oslo »

Is more like if you don´t have money to stay at Grand hotel you can stay at this one and still be in the center of the center of Oslo. Is a old and sweet hotel with ok rooms. Bathtub and nice soft beds. The hotel is on the main street Karl Johan and when you step out from the entrance to the right you can see the castle. I would say is a grate hotel and the price is pretty right.

« Above average, great breakfast and service »

I stayed at the BEST WESTERN Karl Johan Hotel in the beginning of September on business. I very nice woman welcomed me at check in and was very talkative and nice. Always refreshing to get a good and personal welcome on arrival. However the lobby was not big so it was not indented for socialising. But no worries all of that was just around the corner as the location of this hotel is in the heart of the city with lots of bars and coffee houses. The room was clean and very nice. I thought the air-conditioning was not doing its best so I had to have the windows open to let fresh air in. Also there where small flies in the bathroom bothering me. The television and WIFI was great and the breakfast was fabulous, a large buffet with great variety. Good hotel but maybe I was a little unlucky with the room.

« Fascinating Suite & Very Friendly Staff »

Location is often all-important for a hotel. In Oslo, you could hadly find a better location than the Best Western Hotel Karl Johan ! Situated iathe prime part of the main street - Karl Johans gate. Next to the Grand Hotel and the Stortinget (Parliament Buildings). Visitors are greeted with a "red carpet" from the main street. A promising welcome for the visitors ! My wife Maria and myself took advantage of a special offer from the regional newspaper Sandefjords Blad. To encourage people from the "pvovince" to visit the capital city, the newspaper would offer their subscribers 400 NOK off the daily rate of 1395 NOK a double room during the weekends (Friday to Monday).. Maria and I booked a double room for the night : Friday 25 September 2015 - Saturday 26 September 2015. We got the special price and asked for upgrade options as well. This hotel has three suites available . The Karl Johan suite, The Eidsvoll suite, and the The Storthings suite. We decided to book the Storthings suite (room 414) situated on the 3rd floor (4. etasje in Norwegian). Probably the most impressive room altogether in this hotel. Very impressive view of the most prominent part of the centre of Oslo. And not the least : The best view of the city of the Stortinget (the Parliament Buildings). When touring hotels all over the world for decades, it is a typical experience that a suite in a more "modest" hotel is far more interesting, and even far cheaper, than an average room in a grand hotel. The room charge with the neighbours in the Grand Hotel of Oslo would typically be much higher than in this Best Western Hotel Karl Johan. My wife and I paid a suite surcharge of 600 NOK in addition to the special price of 995 NOK a night. This is a very good offer for a suite in the centre of Oslo ! The Reception Desk is situated on the ground floor and easily accessible without stairs. There is a lift to all floors of the hotel. My arrival at the hotel was at about 2 PM (1400 hrs). The Stortings suite was not yet available due to late check-out. The most loyal customers would usually get an upgrade to this or other suites of the hotel. Moreover, it is possible to extend the usual check-out time at noon when paying an additional 100 NOK per hour. It was pleasant to sit down in the lobby area and wait for the room. Some 15-20 minutes or so. Very friendly Staff with excellent command of English and very knowledgeable about the Oslo area. Efficient check-in and check-out procedures. There are coffee/tea facilities available free of charge to the guests in the lobby area. A first meeting with a hotel suite should always be a special experience. I myself enjoyed the Stortings suite from the first minute. First and foremost, the excellent view of the city centre and the bustling life outside. Windows easy to open. As a matter of fact, when standing in the corner window, you really have the feeling of being in the very centre of Oslo. Even greetings from street singers in the sidewalk of Karl Johans gate. The Stortings suite (room 414) is very spacious. There is even a huge table available for dinner parties or any other kind of celebrations. The furniture in this suite like in most Norwegian hotels would appear lto be "second hand furniture" or even worse than that. So if you do want luxury furniture at every occasion, this might not be the right place for you. However, the "spirit of the room" is good and welcoming. The double bed, however, is far from impressive and should be "updated" to one of those solid and by this time normal Scandinavian brands. There is no restaurant in the Best Western Hotel Karl Johan. However, there is an impressive room service menue from the nearby restaurant "Ett Glass" (One Glass). Lots of hot food, burgers, desserts, drinks, etc. A room service fee of 15 NOK. Very symbolic charge in hotels these days ! There is also a mini bar available in the Stortings suite and some snacks on the desk for a fee. A huge TV available with the Scandinavian channels + CNN, BBC. No German channels however. A small bathroom with the usual cosmetics free of charge. However, a bath tube not easily available for elderly people. No walk-in shower in this suite ! Improvements necessary ! The Breakfast next morning was an OK experience. The Breakfast room was situated on the same floor as the Stortings suite. Several stairs, however, would make the room inaccessible for wheelchair gurests. As newcomers to the 60+ generation, my wife and I would also consider how elderly people cope with the stairs. When mentioning this problem to the Reception staff and others, we were told that they would usuallly find a special room for wheelchair guest snd bring the food and beverages to them in that room. The normal Breakfast Room is narrow and has no windows to outside. The selection of food and beverages is OK and the staff is doing a good job. Most Breakfast guests seemed to be in the age group 20-30 years of age. So, all in all, a pleasant hotel with a top location and, not the least, an impressive staff. The Stortings suite is recommended to all who would like a special experience of Oslo !

    « Wonderful Greeting »

If the management of this hotel could bottle and market the warmth and enthusiasm of their front desk person, Vita, they could make a million! She is so friendly and did everything to make us feel so welcome. Loved her....she should be the person training personnel. Wonderful! Going back this weekend!
