They say a picture speaks a thousand words. Which is fortunate, because we only have around 150 to squeeze in a description that justifies this grand, characterful, utterly comfortable Grade A listed mansion! Built around 1751, BEST WESTERN Moffat House Hotel is perfectly situated in Moffat town centre itself, though its own 1. 5 acre grounds make for a peaceful ambience inside and out. Glasgow and Edinburgh can be explored just 50 miles to the north, while our excellent accommodation and lounges might just persuade you to find places of interest without leaving the building! Where food is concerned, International cuisine (using local produce) is winning us awards each year, as well as the hearts of our guests! We're well known for customer care and homely hospitality, and our standards are as high as you'll find anywhere in England. Which brings us onto the 150th word we talked about earlier: Wow! Enjoy your stay.

    « A good hotel for summer ? »

Not so much the winter as the heating in the rooms left a lot to be desired. If I was stayng there again I would not take one of the single rooms as they are rather small, that said they are all ensuite and would have been @good enough@ if the heating and hot water issues were solved. The staff were all bright, helpful and the food pretty good as well.

    « Lovely Hotel »

Nice hotel with a very comfortable bar and restaurant and in a great location close to all shops etc. Originally I tried to book the executive rooms but they were fully booked, we felt the standard rooms were a bit too small for us but certainly didn't spoil our stay. The staff are all excellent, very polite and helpful. We had diner at the hotel which was excellent as was the breakfast ( one of the best we had in Scotland ). Thank you to all concerned. See you soon.

« Pleasant Hotel In Pleasant Town »

Pleasant hotel, just off the main street with room for parking. Staff friendly and helpful, breakfast was tasty but evening meals seemed rather limited and tad on the expensive side. My room was clean and functional and facilities in good working order. Would have no hesitation in staying again

    « Old fashioned hotel »

We booked the four poster room which was a fantastic price. There was a bit of confusion at checkout as we had advanced paid the booking but she could not find her receipt despite us having ours. This put a bit of a bad tastes in our mouth. The bar is lovely the rooms old fashioned and if you are looking for modern chic this is not the place. If you don't mind aged rooms and carpets this is the place. The rooms were spotless.

« Satisfactory, but could do with a makeover »

We were passing through, stayed only night and did not eat there. All OK but generally faded appearance. Apart from the (new?) dining room which looked a very nice place to eat. (We were too mean to pay 12.50 each for breakfast and went to cafe over the road for a coffee and croissant, but do not recommend this.)

    2
    « Poor service »

We arrived early evening and the bar area was messy empty cups on tables, chairs all over and tables not clean. The meal it's self on the whole was quite good except for finding a foreign object in my fish. When after a while the server/ bar person came to clear the table I mentioned it to them and showed them. Nothing was done not even a sorry just a shrug of the shoulders. The same member of staff was more concerned with warming them self by the fire and chatting to his colleague. All in all not the family dinner planed. It's a shame as the hotel it's self is a lovely old building with lots of character. I have been here before and then it was absolutely fine. May be a bad night . However more like staffing issues and lots more training required.

    « Good stay »

Stayed here for one night recently. Nice and clean - room 20 large and nice touches like plenty of milk which you don't normally get. Dinner really nice in the bar - steak and ale pie with veg nice. Staff friendly and next day, breakfast was good. Only gripe was that the shower didn't work but bath fine.

« A three star hotel that punches above its weight »

Have stayed here 3-4 times. The hotel is well situated in the middle of Moffat. The rooms are comfortable and the amenities are good. We have only eaten breakfast which is excellent. The bar requires updating. Good range of beers and spirits. Would stay there again.

    « Character Hotel »

Stayed here in September 2016 on a stopover to Oban in Scotland. The hotel benefits from ample free parking at the front of the hotel and is ideally situated to explore the town. Being an old building the rooms are huge and non corporate, our room had a bath and overhead shower and both the room and bathroom were adequately centrally heated. TV and tea facilities were supplied as well as free WIFI although you will need a code from the reception to access the internet. We ate in the bar rather than the restaurant (photo attached) which had a large seating area and a cosy feel about it. The staff were very pleasant and obliging and the food was to a good standard and reasonably priced. Bed comfortable and nothing to fault would certainly recommend this hotel for as being competitively priced and and an ideal overnighter or indeed for a longer stay. Ask about the steak meal deal with free bottle of wine.

    « Reflections »

Lovely hotel and staff and dinner/room service. Strange however that the shower is plumbed into bath taps and has poorest pressure and temperature ever seen since 1970. Fire doors labelled keep shut wedged open. Outer security door to annexed rooms not working as door swollen with weather I expect. Pretty much not acknowledged by staff at breakfast and only offered tea or coffee when someone came in for breakfast. Home kitchen toaster - slow to brown/toast bread. Checking out noticed a £30 hike in the rate compared to booking rate - all sorted but all of the above does leave you wondering - how did this hotel get a Best Western rating... that's my reflection anyway.

    « Could be Better »

Very pleasant looking hotel. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Rooms being updated, room very spacious, but bathroom cold with cold air coming in air vent. Somehow housekeeping missed our room. Did not book breakfast, but evening meals in hotel very good. Overall although few problems enjoyed our stay.

    « Sunday Carvery »

We often meet our family at Moffat for Sunday Lunch and have been to the Best Western / Moffat House on a number of occasions. They have recently re-introduced a Sunday Carvery Lunch. Tell all your family and friends !!!, Our Sunday Lunch on the 2nd of October was absolutely superb !!!!, one of the best Carvery / Sunday Lunches we have ever had. The whole familly, five of us, never left anything on our plates. Tip for the Restaurant - Display your Sunday Lunch banner more prominently and let a lot more people know that you are serving Lunches, mind you, if you do, we may have a problem getting in next time !!!. Trevor and Christine Aston - Windermere.

    « Poor »

The sign outside was enticing but inside was dull and very 70's decor. We ordered lunch in the bar and it arrived almost immediately which indicated that it was pre-cooked! Both starter and main arrived together so the main was cold when we came to eat it. Overall very poor.

    « Beautiful wedding »

We were invited to close friends wedding here, but didn't manage to stay as it was fully booked so stayed next door. The hotel is lovely to the eye, has a charming feel inside, the gardens are perfect for photos or just enjoying afternoon tea or a quiet drink. The wedding went very well, with the hotel providing lovely rooms gor the service & reception. We sat in one of the conservatories while photos were taken outside. Then sat out in the gardens which as I said give a relaxing feel to your afternoon. I would like to go back to sample an overnight & enjoy the accomodation as friends told us the rooms were lovely & comfortable.

« Great place to stay, fantastic team of staff »

Impromptu stay after husband hospitalised while on hols in Scotland. What a great team they have here, everyone is very friendly, and made my extended stay as comfortable as possible. You must try the breakfast, amazing! Rooms are a little tired, but this all adds to the atmosphere, they are very comfortable with everything you could need, and they are very generous with the complimentary tea and coffee.

    5
    « Beautiful Cottage »

We stayed in the cottage which was modern, beautifully decorated. Sky Tv For the Kids and free wifi. It's perfect for family to stay self catering with plenty places to eat on your door stop. The parking was fantastic just outside the door. Loved our stay and would recommend for family's or small groups. 10/10 can't fault the service or staff very attentive and friendly.

    2
    « Pretty awful lunch »

Stopped in at this hotel for a soup/sandwich lunch. There is another hotel across the road, and that is where we should have gone. The soup was, allegedly, scotch broth, but really was just a gloopy bowl of liquid with a lot of barley in it. The 'artisan' sandwich containing chicken, a dollop of haggis and practically raw bacon with huge bits of fat attached was dire. The staff are very pleasant as is the location, but if you are trying to attract people to have lunch, then you really need to provide appetising food, properly prepared. I can show the chef how to make scotch broth from scratch.

« Very comfortable hotel with great staff »

We stayed as an extended family (5 adults and 2 small children) for one night on our way to the west coast of Scotland and I have to say I was delighted with the hotel. Yes, it's a bit tired but the rooms are very clean and comfortable. The location in the centre of Moffat offers the opportunity for an enjoyable walk through the town before dinner or after breakfast and the car park has ample space. Wd decided to have dinner in the restaurant which was well cooked and very good value (we had the steak and wine offer) and there were reasonable options for the children. The staff were very accommodating and the breakfast the following day was excellent. The hidden gem is the summer lounge and the garden (which includes songs and slide) at the rear of the building where we enjoyed a quiet cup of coffee before setting off.

    « Good location »

First time stayed here was pleasantly surprised with cleanliness and standard! Have stayed at other Best Western hotels in UK but have always been disappointed, however, not this time!! Staff really nice, lovely clean room, large comfy bed, nice decor. Well done Moffat House will stay again!!

    « just OK »

The hotel was on the main street of Moffat. It is a bit dated but so was everything in Moffat. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room felt a bit damp, don't know if it was because of the rainy weather. It was a good thing that we were on the ground floor because there are no elevators. The walls seem to be very thin. There was very little water pressure in the shower head. The wifi was ok but you had to get a new password everyday and for each device, a pain. It cuts in and out at times.

    « Somewhat disappointed »

Originally booked this hotel as a superior room through Booking.com and had confirmation of this. Two days later the hotel rang to say there were no superior rooms available!!!! So would we accept a standard room. We had by this time arranged our itinerary so agreed to it. A big mistake! The room was dark, wallpaper peeling off, the bathroom needing updating. The shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold, you needed a degree to get the right temperature, the difference was so finite. The staff were brilliant but very overworked just three of them to manage reception, the bar and wait on tables. We ordered a lasagne each in the bar which was fine along with a portion of chips.... which we are still waiting for. At breakfast they also forgot to take our order so we had to go looking for that. Our sleep was disturbed by the fire alarm going off 3 times during the night and because of the gaps round the door the family from hell in the next room , who obviously thought they were the only ones staying there, we could hear everything. Such a shame as the hotel has a lot of potential but unfortunately the worst Best Western we have ever stayed in. In all fairness I think the superior rooms were a lot better but having stayed in a superior room in Liverpool the previous night for only £20 less value for money was VERY disappointing. The hotel have apologized but they really need to improve their rooms.

    « Excellent hospitality »

Comfortable "country house" type hotel ideally situated for the half way point between London and the north of Scotland. A welcoming and friendly staff clearly concerned to provide good service to guests.

« Treat for Mum and Dad »

Booked a two night midweek break for my mum and dad on the 7th and 8th September. They stayed in the self catering cottage and loved everyminute of it. Beautiful location and building with lovely gardens, Food was marvellous, breakfasts were scrumptious and plentiful as my dad said and the service and care by the team and manager Paul was impeccable. As my mum said 'so good we stayed and extra night'

« Really nice bar staff and so very helpful »

Anytime we visit Moffat we always have lunch in the bar of this hotel. The food is excellent especially the steak and ale pie . The steak is in a very rich sauce, and the meat so tender and not a bit of fat. The only pastry is a large puff pastry lid which so very light We were in on a Sunday this time and normally it is not available as it is carvery day. The staff remembered us and arranged with the chef to make it available. The bar area is very well furnished and comfortable and the service first class. Anytime we are in Scotland via the M74 it is essential to stop over for this meal.

    « Great Staff »

Stayed here 2 nights to attend a wedding, and have to say it was a great experience. I have seen prev views re old fashioned, but hey its a country house. Great comfy beds, and its the staff that make this place that bit special. All the staff, check in cleaners, bar staff, waiterfolk, were all chatty and always had a smile Will def be back ( Full scottish breakfast recommended to set you up for the day)

« Nice hotel, good location, worth a visit! »

We decided to break up a journey from north wales to St Andrews, Moffat was about half way. The town is lovely with some nice restaurants and shops set in lovely scenery. The hotel has some character, a bit tired in places but that just adds to the character! The staff are very good and friendly, the breakfast was very nice. It made a great starting point of our summer holiday tour of Scotland!

    « A little dissappointed »

We have stayed in this hotel quite a few times. Only once did I have cause for complaint, until now. We stayed for 3 nights. When I called to make my reservation I stated I wanted a 4 poster room. I was offered room 3 which I declined and was the offered room 7, never having seen room 7 I accepted and booked this over the phone. When we arrived check in was swift and we were told where room 7 was. When I entered the room it was huge but the bed looked like it had been a 4 poster but looked as if someone had removed the canopy. Anyway we didn't make a fuss unpacked and started to relax. Later when I went to have a bath I noticed that someone else's hair was all over the tiles in the bathroom. Again I didn't make a fuss and presumed the cleaner would do a better job next day. But no, cleaning is the biggest let down at this hotel. The black mould around the shower was awful as well as seeing other peoples left over hair was disgusting. The only reasonable clean part of the room appeared to be the bed but that creaked every time you moved so didn't get a good sleep in the 3 nights we stayed. On check out I reported all of this and the young man said he would pass on my comments, we paid in full and left. Then I started thinking about how much I had paid and realised I had been charged for a 4 poster room but was given a double. When I contacted the Moffat they confirmed this and said they would refund me the £60.00 difference which they did but it took 2 weeks for the cheque to arrive. This is a lovely hotel but needs serious updating of rooms. The only part of the hotel I have stayed in which was nice is the cottage which was lovely, the rooms in the main hotel are horrible. I can put up with hotel rooms that are dated and in need of refurbishment BUT not dirty rooms and bathrooms. What I will say though is the STAFF are FANTASTIC so pleasant, even the managers serve behind the bar. The food is nice but the menu has changed and has a lot less choice. Also the breakfast is beautifully cooked BUT they are trialling self serve tea and coffee which does not work as the water is not hot enough so staff have to get you hot tea or coffee anyway, so please bring back proper tea and coffee service at breakfast. The gardens are beautiful, so relaxing and quiet. We would stay here again but I would have to insist on a clean room

« Delicious Lunch stopover on way south »

We've stopped for lunch a few times before on our way south and have always enjoyed our lunch. Today we opted for soup and sandwich and were not disappointed. The mushroom soup was really great and had much more than mushrooms in the mix. I also had the grilled Lockerbie cheese on tomato sourdough bread which was also excellent. This is definitely our go to place when heading south. Excellent!

    « Enjoyable lunch »

On a nice sunny day my wife and I tour around Scotland and invariably have a lunch somewhere. On this occasion we chose to travel to Moffat and had a our lunch at the Moffat House Hotel, sitting in the rear gardens by the 300 year old oak tree. We shared a Balmoral Chicken Brioche which was very filling and tasty including the whisky infused haggis. The wine and beer was also very welcome.

    4
    « Wedding »

Staff were friendly, room was clean and well attended to. We were there for a wedding and the only negative was that were not told that the bar was going to close and there were a number of us still up from the days wedding. Overall a good and comfortable stay.

    1
« Most disappointing course ever. »

Travelling a spectacularly scenic route from Berwick-on-Tweed to Paisley we called in passed Moffat for lunch. The Best Western Moffat House Hotel looked promising and my favourite "Cullen Skink" was on the menu! What a disappointment and rip off! A 2.5" square portion of Smoked Haddock, a slice of potato and three small thin portions of leek placed in a plateful of watery salty cream. Perhaps it was the chef's day off or his interpretation (or "guess") of this well known Scottish culinary delight. The very pleasant serving waitress was rushed off her feet and my complaint rests solely in the kitchen.

    3
« Good, but could do better »

This is a good hotel with a very well appointed restaurant.A basically good meal was spoilt by a stale "biscuit" served with an excellent paté. I would like to see more attention to detail and staff who ask for feedback must learn how to deal with this even when it is negative.

    « Fantastic Stay. »

Just returned from an overnight stay at this wonderful hotel. There area few places to eat out close to the hotel but believe me you would mad not to dine at the Moffat House Hotels "Oaktree" Restaurant. The setting is beautiful the service top notch and the food is absolutely delicious. In fact during our meal my wife and I heard "complements to the chef" coming from our fellow diners on more than one occasion. The breakfast was to die for, full Scottish made with top quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. We stayed in the "cottage" a self contained apartment annexed to the main hotel. The cottage has two huge bedrooms (with huge beds) lounge, kitchen (fully equipped) bathroom (with whirlpool bath, shower over) and a patio area adjacent to the beautiful hotel gardens. We found the bed super comfy and had a great sleep. The cottage was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. We definitely be returning to this gem of a hotel. Highly recommended.

« No hot water in the morning! »

We stayed here on the way to a wedding. We were in a ground floor room and I commented to my husband that I couldn't believe how quiet it was considering it was just off the road. That was until 1am! Then the people in the room above us sounded as if they were having a party. Very noisy till 2.30 am. My daughters were in a room in the main house and didn't have any hot water in their bathroom the next morning. Needs a bit of modernising but our room was comfortable enough.

    « trip to festival »

Moffet house was a great stopping point . Not the most sophisticated but warm and fabulous gardens . Lovely old house ,in need of investment into the site as it has huge potential. and character . The town is unspoilt and has good local shops and eating places .

« A friendly welcome for people and pets. »

My grandson, dog and I were breaking our journey north and for the first time in Moffat were lucky enough to book the Moffat House Hotel. The room was spacious and spotless, the staff were brilliant - they set breakfast for us in the lounge bar and even brought a bowl of water for the dog. We tried to book for the return journey but unfortunately they were fully booked - but we will definitely be back

    3
« A great location, lovely grounds and fab staff. »

We stayed here recently and had a good sized double room with en suite facilities. The staff were great and this is key for this establishment. I think its far to say that the hotel is a little tired, faded around the edges, you will see similar comments from other previous guests. It did not distract from our experience but in truth this was down to the staff who were charming and helpful. We had a room only deal, breakfast would have added another 12.50 per head. We felt that the additional 25 pound this would have added to our hotel room bill would have been expensive.

    4
    « Homely, quiet. »

Stayed here quite a few times before. Needs quite a lot of renovation etc, which they are addressing it seems. Comfortable and quiet, good parking, friendly; perhaps a bit light on staff. Good town location with many shops nearby and a good golf course. Conveniently located just off the A 74M, so good to break a journey further north like Sutherland, which is where I m headed. A good experience if fairly basic, but clean andcomfortable

    « Wedding venue »

Our son and his fiancé chose this hotel as the venue for their wedding recently. The hotel offered them the complete package. Guests were able to stay in the hotel the night before and the night after the wedding. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Their friendliness made the whole event so very special. The facilities were clean and tidy, easily accessible and well appointed. Reception, booking in and room allocation was smooth and quick. Food was excellent, good sized portions, hot and tasty. Watering staff were smart, knowledgeable and quietly efficient. The organisation of guests to keep the event to time was down quietly and effectively. The bar staff worked tirelessly to try and keep up with orders - nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were nicely appointed, clean and tidy. However, one or two guests thought their room decor was getting a little bit tired. Ours was fine. Breakfast was well run with a wide range of choices well presented with ever helpful staff on hand to assist as required and to take orders. A very pleasant experience in a beautiful location helping the wedding experience to be something very special.

« Great location but hotel needs updating »

The hotel is in a lovely location in the centre of Moffat. We booked a standard double for two nights. The room could really do with being re decorated. There was wallpaper peeling off the walls, the wardrobe door was broke, there was mould on the wall in the bathrooms and the bath mat was covered in mould and needed to be replaced. The carpets on the main stairs was also well worn and old. This hotel could be so beautiful but at the moment looks quite gloomy inside and really needs some maintenance and updating. We really hope this can get resolved because apart from this we had a really lovely stay. Food is nice, and staff are friendly.

« Moffat is a good stop over point on a trip either going north or south for Scotland »

Booked this last minute before starting my journey, arrived 61/2 hours later in the evening. On arrival I was informed that I had achieved a room up grade, what really happened (in my opinion) hotel fully booked so stuff him in what ever is left! I got what called the cottage, do not get me wrong this was a great facility for the night when realistically only a bed was required. If you are a family needing a place for the night or a few days to explore then this cottage is just ideal, two good size rooms, large bathroom with bath that has water jets (wow), kitchenette with all facilities including a good size table four could fit round, top this off with a conservatory fitted with 2 x sofas and large TV. Only disappointment was I couldn't make good use of it. Breakfast was included in my price but if you had to pay its a whopping £25.00 per person, ruddy rip off. Moffats a great town with lots of cafes and eating places, I guess you could a good breakfast for a hell of a lot less.

    3
« Poor attention to customers and detail »

We came in tonight for a meal. We ordered at 6.30pm at 7.10pm I noticed everyone who had come on after us had been served so enquired. The waitress then came over to explain our order hadn't gone through could she take it again? Very poor that it took over 40 minutes of us sitting quite obviously to staff we had not had our food yet others had. The food was lovely and came out prompt after second order. The toilets had no toilet roll so yes poor and shame as I have stayed here and eaten here before but attention to detail missing. We ordered extra drinks has waited so long and think they could have at the very least compensated us.

    4
    « Excellent and Friendly »

A good hotel in the centre of Moffat. The friendly staff and good accommodation really made our stay. The food did not disappoint either and If you include dinner in your stay and it's on the menu you must try the "Surf & Turf" (Scallops & Venison) cooked to perfection mmmm!

« Faultless Staff... room horrid »

I want to begin by thanking the Staff at the Best Western House Hotel for being outstanding. Myself and my husband were attending a family wedding arriving on the Friday and staying till the Sunday. We had an evening meal on the Friday night which was fantastic really enjoyed our meal. Breakfast both mornings were delicious freshly made and what appeared to be good quality fresh ingredients. All staff were pleasant and can not be faulted. However..... As previously mentioned we were staying for two nights paying £110 per night for bed and breakfast ( breakfast £12.50ph) so room being £85 a night. Room was tired and very poor standard. Dampness could be seen on the walls and dealing, moguls in the bathroom and cracked tiles. Lighting was very poor which did not help when trying to get ready on the morning of the wedding. A number of other family members also stayed over and their rooms were of a much higher standard than ours and paying the same. Room was small luckily we weren't in it for too long. Did not wish to make a big deal out it and complain given it was a family wedding however I think this is something that requires a great deal of attention. Have stayed and far better standard of room for a lot less money. Only thing that lets you down.

    5
    « Moffat Must »

Stayed here for 2 nights at a wedding and although a little bit dated the beds were so comfortable and the staff could not do enough for us. The food was excellent with a good variety and great breakfast menu. Thanks to all who made this a great weekend.

    « Lovely break »

Phoned directly to hotel offered better last minute deal than on line. Set in beautiful grounds which was great to sit outside with plenty of room for our little dog to run around. Food good too both breakfast and evening meal. Staff very friendly. Rooms smart and clean.

    « Needs Refurbishment »

We have passed this hotel on many occasions on trips from SW England to Scotland, and always liked the look of it. It is set in a beautiful location in this very pleasant town. On this occasion, we had a trip to Aberdeen, and decided this would make an ideal stopover. The room was very disappointing - and we had an upgraded room! The furniture looked old and tired and the paintwork looked as if it been undertaken by a not very competent DIY person. The en-suite bathroom was no better with cracks in the tiles, dreadful paintwork and the electric shower was really poor. Also be aware that there is no lift; my wife and I are ?getting on a bit' and found carting our bags up the stairs a bit of a struggle. On the positive side, we found staff members to be very helpful. I did point out my observations about the room on check out, and was assured a refurbishment programme was underway. It would be worth checking this before committing to staying. We had breakfast at the hotel. It was excellent and again wait staff were really good. It is this which encouraged me to lift the marking to three stars. Having stayed recently at the Best Western at Kendal (which was great in every way) I found this offering disappointing. I would not stay here again unless the place had been given a thorough refurbishment. The potential exists to make this a really great hotel.

    « Comfortable stay »

Stayed here a few years ago, just returning due to more work in the area. The hotel is a little tired inside now since I last stayed here. Room was clean and comfortable but dated. No lift so heavy work bag was a struggle upstairs. Food was nice.. good choice of traditional Scottish fair in the restaurant and home comforts in the bar. Parking was a little restricted. WiFi is available throughout the hotel which was good.

    « Lovely place »

We stayed here for 2 nights as my sister was getting married here.. On arrival we were dealt with quickly and diverted to our room.. On entering our room in was clean, tidy and really spacious.. We had one of the family rooms and there was more than enough to space for all four of us.. We also took our little chihuahua along as its a pet friendly hotel.. The hotel gardens are beautifully kept.. On the day of the wedding we were made to feel really special by all the hotel staff, they took care of anything we needed.. Our sit down meal was beautiful, and served red hot.. The little village in which the hotel is set is lovely too, everything u need right on your doorstep.. We would deffo recommend this hotel and we would surely return.

This is a wonderful place for your wedding. We came over 200 miles to our friends wedding and the journey was well worth it. The hotel is beautiful the rooms huge and very clean, the staff and management are amazing can't do enough for you. I have just one complaint and that the bar prices need to match the rest of the town at nearly £1 a pint more it's ridiculous. Would I stay here again. Without a doubt yes but drink elsewhere.

« Lovely building and lovely staff - but given the non veggie burger! »

After walking around Moffat to find somewhere to eat we settled on Moffat House Hotel for an evening meal. Ordered the veggie burger -- and was given a real meat one! Initially I assumed it was simply a particularly authentic type of meat substitute but by the end of the meal it was clear that I had actually eaten real meat. I'm sure it was a one off genuine mistake by the otherwise lovely waitress but as a vegetarian you can understand my distress!

Last minute overnight stay as needed a break from driving. Room was fairly priced and comfy. Big, comfortable 4 poster bed and well stocked hospitality tray. Clean and airy room. Good sized bathroom. Staff friendly and helpful. Had a drink in the bar. Pricing average for a hotel. Comfy sofas to sit on.

    « Excellent Friendly Hotel »

4 of us stayed here while in the area for a triathlon. We stayed in the self catering cottage which was brilliant. Lounge area, kitchen, access to a patio and the hotel gardens. Lots of towels, Sky TV, tea and coffee making facilities etc. The hotel is right on the Main Street and has it's own car park. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. What made this hotel special was the staff. Best customer service I've ever had. They were so friendly and helpful and always cheery. A real pleasure to stay here and will definitely stay again when back in Moffat. Thank you.

    « Comfortable & friendly »

Stayed here one night on the way to visit family. Arrived about 2.20 in the afternoon and we were greeted pleasantly by a gentleman and given our room keys. When we entered it was obvious the room hadn't been made up. Went back to reception and explained about the room, the gentleman was surprised and apologised profusely. He offered us drinks in the bar as an apology while the room was sorted but we were quite happy to go for a walk in the town. Came back 1/2 an hour later and again he apologised and offered to carry our bags to the room. We really appreciated his sincerity and how he handled the error, to us we don't expect everything to go right when staying in hotels but great customer service on dealing with a problem is a must. The room itself was spacious and comfortable, breakfast in the morning was excellent quality and plentiful, hubby had full Scottish and enjoyed all of it, I had eggs benedict which was great and came on crumpet instead of muffin which is how I'm going to have it in future as I thought it was tastier, the 2 eggs were poached to perfection. Lovely stay, lovely staff. Thank you.

    « Hotel or motel? »

Stayed for one night aftet a great days golf on the coast, and arrived at half 7. We checked in and were told that we were in the annexe ; a wave of the hand and "On your right as you leave through the door" pointed us back out to the car park. We trundled around to find that our room was located at the extreme perimeter facing the road with entry directly from the car park and not in sight of the main building. Once inside, the room was spacoius with the bathroom outside the bedroom. We never quite figured out the 2 adjoining doors to the bathroom corridor as they were not marked on the fire escape floor plan. Then we opted to go to the restaurant for dinner. We stayed in the bar as it was busy (always a good sign) and the restaurant was empty. The menu didnt list any allergens and being coeliac I did as requested and checked with the waitress my menu choices. Having sorted that out, I was disappointed to have my meal served with battered onion rings that, on asking, were confirmed to contain wheat flour. The steak was cooked as requested. However, we didnt order dessert or stay for breakfast because of a different issue. During our meal a lovely adorable puppy came in and the man behind the bar did what anyone would do, knelt down to fuss and pet the dog. Then pro.ptly returned to the bar and continued to serve customers. This hygiene oversight really put a dampener on an otherwise enjoyable stay.

A great country house hotel in an interesting little town with an excellent menu range available -especially the steak night deal on a Friday but stay for the amazing breakfasts as well. The quality of the food is outstanding. If the weather is good there is a large garden area to sit in for a drink or a meal

« "Oh I am sorry, I had no idea. Let me help". »

We had booked an overnight stop on our way up to Kilchrenan by Taynuilt from London. We found the staff very helpful - they let me into their office to catch up on important work emails and I could hear them putting themselves out for other guests who came to ask advice or made enquiries. Breakfast was ample and good qulaity and the price charged for the throom was commensurate with other hotels if not less expensive. Room was fine an clean. The only reason for omitting the 5th star was that I had the sense of there being less than good communication at times between staff which caused minor problems and some puzzled faces from clients as the could see the staff were very happy to help and concerned that customers had a pleasant time yet silly little things were gong wrong which you would not expect with a positive attitude from the staff on duty and the good quality food produced. Absolutely fine for us for one night. Thank you Staff for all the help you provided for me..

    « Leaving party for a colleague »

We decided to book a suite in the same hotel as my colleague had his retirement party. We had a great night, with a great atmosphere. The staff were all helpful and friendly and with excellent service. The food was good value for money, well presented and of good quality, both for breakfast and evening meal.

    « Attentive staff team »

Our room was very spacious and pleasantly decorated. All details had been addressed hair dryer which wasn't tethered to a wall but could be used where needed. Tea and coffee making facilities. The room was warm and welcoming and the bed was extremely comfortable. We ate both dinner and breakfast both meals were beautifully presented and well cooked, the portions were quite large. The only downside was a grubby looking shower curtain. The staff were extremely polite, attentive and helpful.

« Sadly this wasn't our best stay »

Stayed at the hotel in 2005 and loved it so much we returned this year and was really looking forward to it. Booked a room in the main building with views over the garden ( well in advance as was for a special birthday treat) and got an annex room overlooking the car park. Had to complain about the noise from other guests at 2am . Told staff of our concerns but didn't offer another room or discount so we only stayed 1 night . One plus - the breakfast was excellent.

« A big welcome for the dogs! »

We did not know that our dogs could join us and when we found out we brought them in and they were well treated! Humans are well looked after too the service was very efficient and the staff were so friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was superb and so tasty. I had Salmon cooked 3 ways with strawberry salad so good and my partner had steak cooked medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. We look forward to going back again in September when we are back on our holidays again. We only ate here but from what we could see the Hotel part was just as friendly.

« Country town night stop »

Arrival and check in was smooth friendly and very polite. After leaving our luggage in room, which incidentally was very nice. Big and airy to the rear on first floor. Everything we needed was there. Bar was warm and welcoming and we had a large Sauvignon blanch and a pint of IPA.. Very nice after drive from Formby. Dinner in bar was fine and good value for money. Sleep time, bed a bit hard with hard pillows. Breakfast very nice although finally disorganised. Had to search out a waitress to order, then eventually when tea and coffee arrived, no cups and saucers, toast arrived with the milk we asked for with breakfast some 10 minutes later, No side plates.. A bit disorganised. On arrival at next destination, we noticed that the bar bill was £19.95 for the two lunchtime drinks. I find that to be a bit steep, after all a full bottle of the Sauvignon blanch from memory was £14.95.... Need to check my bar bills more carefully... All in a a good hotel.. Good standards. Would we stay there again? YES we probably will...

Great hotel, lovely rooms, great for kids. Staff fantastic and food just brilliant. Highly recommend. Grounds are beautiful. Nothing bad to say. They even let us have an earlier check in all the staff were lovely. Bride and groom appeared to enjoy their stay also. The cottages attached looked beautiful.

We visited Moffat house back in January as a potential wedding location.we loved everything about the hotel and decided that day to book our wedding. We stayed in the cottage for two days,it's beautiful! Very spacious and you even have your own little back garden with patio and a little games room for the kids. The food and service was outstanding.I visited 4 different rooms within the hotel (mums, sisters, inlaws and friends) and everyone of them were lovely. All our wedding guests have commented on the staffs outstanding service and the quality of the food.I am gutted its all over but owe a lot to the staff Moffat house for helping to make it the best day of my life! We stayed here for 2 nights while a friend got married at Auchen castle, nice clean room, friendly staff and good value for £80 night could probably do with a lick of paint/modernisation here and there but overall good, breakfast was ok,(better value over the road at the little tea room) Overall good ????

    « Better than expected »

We were a little unsure when we booked this hotel for four nights as we stayed there several years ago and were not over impressed. However, we need not have been concerned. Our reception was friendly and efficient, and indeed the staff were excellent and very hard working throughout. Our room was within the original building and large, clean and comfortable. The food was good if somewhat restricted in choice, and the conservatory restaurant was fine. There was adequate parking available, and the sizeable garden is well maintained and peaceful.

Over night stay Hotel needs a lick of paint friendly staff nice dining / breakfast room , breakfast was very good . When we arrived 4pm ish the room was cold we turned the rads on no heat the heating was off ,we pointed this out to reception nothing happened later we tried to have a shower just warm water didn't bother . next morning room was hot , water was hot maybe they had a problem, but it should be up to the guest to decide what temp a room should be . Nice old building lovely gardens to the rear .

    « Tired but friendly »

I guess for an £80 overnight stop you shouldn't expect too much. The room allocated was on 2nd floor with no lift which was changed at the suggestion of the receptionist to first floor as I had a dodgy back. The room itself is large with a 4poster bed but tired old furniture slightly frayed carpets and no desk to work at with rather dingy lighting. It was clean and as I say the staff were friendly but they need a program to modernise the rooms, upgrade the bathrooms etc. I was the sole person in the bar.

    « Extremely bad experience »

My niece flew from Australia to have a wedding blessing. Ten weeks ago we booked a table for sixteen for dinner in the garden room. Eight weeks ago we attended the hotel for lunch and was informed that the booking was confirmed. 20th may my wife and friend had coffee in the hotel and was informed all was good for the next night. Party of sixteen attended after blessing in evening to be informed no idea what you are talking about(what booking) Duty manager not got a clue, the icing on the cake his statement"we might be able to fit you in",with my niece in tears we left. An unprofessional attitude shown,we will never return again,

    « Friendly Hotel »

Just back from a 2 night stay to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Stayed in room 2 which was nice but a bit tired looking but very comfortable and quiet. The bathroom could also benefit from an upgrade. The breakfast room was lovely with an outlook to the garden, it helped that the weather was glorious. All the staff we came in contact with were polite and professional. Evening meal taken in the hotel on the Sunday night was very well cooked and presented. Breakfasts excellent. Would recommend as a good base to discover a lovely part of the country.

    « Overnight stay »

Greeted by polite professional staff we were given an excellent clean room with views across the fields and gardens at the rear of the hotel, the evening meal was good and taken in a pleasant restaurant adjoining the garden. After a good night's sleep we ate a well-cooked hearty breakfast, all in all what you would expect from a Best Western, certainly the best hotel I have stayed at in Moffat.

    « Would definitely recommend »

We enjoyed our stay in one of the family rooms I believe it was room 21. We had two children aged 3 and 4 with us. We checked in just after two and our room wasn't quite ready but that was ok as we didn't want to go straight to the room anyway. The room was clean and cosy we had two single beds and a large king size bed (2 singles pushed together) . Our bed was big enough that when our daughter woke and came in beside us we still had plenty room for ourselves. Our children were a little excited when they first came in and they ran about a little which must have been a little loud for our guests below as I believe they banged on the ceiling. This couldn't really be helped but I guess guests in the room below should be advised that they might hear children above with it being a family room. Breakfast was lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. They made a slight mix up on breakfast but I didn't mind so didn't say anything. I think if I had it would have been quickly sorted though. We had made an appointment to discuss our wedding in advance and this has to be delayed by an hour as they had a wedding on that day. Again it didn't matter as we got to enjoy a walk in the local town. The staff were really busy setting up for the wedding that day and they seemed to really pay attention to detail and it looked great. We booked our wedding there for next year and look forward to going back !! ??

    « Light break stop »

Stopped off this morning at 0955 on our way down from Edinburgh. Just wanted a cold drink and catch our breath! A welcome as we entered the hotel, and a good fire set in the lounge and an enjoyable break. Hotel looked extremely clean and well presented. We have been calling here regularly over the past 30 years and have rarely, if ever, been disappointed. It would seem that there is a new management team on site perhaps?? Anyway keep up these standards, and you will not get any dissatisfied customers. Well done.

« Comfortable hotel in Moffat »

This is a lovely building and the hotel has a very pleasant ambiance. We stayed just one night as we were travelling from the north of Scotland to southern England. It was a very comfortable stay in a pleasant bedroom. We didn't have much interaction with the staff but they seemed efficient. Breakfast seemed pricey at £25 for 2 so went to one of the many cafes in the town.

    « Great garden room »

Welcome is warm but room was cold on arrival. Room 10 was a bit dated, but clean apart from toilet bowl, which we cleaned ourselves! Swags and tails look out of place now. Lovely old building, but best Western needs to spend money north of the border! The staff deserve it if not the customer. The food was lovely, and service top notch. Nothing too much trouble.

    « Disappointed. »

A short-notice stay, a good deal, breaking a journey. If we'd paid full price this review would be much, much more strident but no matter the price a room should be clean (the bathroom wasn't), the mattress should be fit for purpose and not collapsed or corrugated, the WiFi should work well (it didn't) a mug should not be so cracked it leaks, housekeeping staff should not wake you by chatting outside the room and it should be understood that "Y' alright there, sir?" is not an appropriate greeting, especially from the back of reception to avoid a twenty foot walk....

    3
    « Four poster room.... »

After spending the weekend at Auchen castle we decided to stay in Moffat for two nights, we called in around 11am to ask about check in as we were shattered, told by reception check in was 2pm....arrived at 2.05pm to check in and was told our room wasn't ready. The room was eventually ready at 2.40pm so not the best start. Got into the room and it was cold, turned on the heater that was fine, the room was a little dated but still lovely with a nice for poster bed. so after settling down and putting the TV on it started..... the room above I believe was a family room, it sounded like a very loud thudding caused by running from end to end of the room for a solid 3 hours (I know this is not the hotels fault) After not been able to sleep we decided to see about another room, we changed to a different room that was smaller, lovely warm and quiet, this was a lesser room and we were politely told their was no charge for technically a downgrade, very kind of them. although as said we had a decent nights sleep. unfortunately we moved back down to the four poster room the following morning. Nice big bath, hard to get in and out of if your my 5ft 2 wife haha, quite a loud room you could hear people at all hours, the pebbles crunching when cars parking, very loud in general. The next morning we got woken up at 7am clearly by all the workmen/business men using the hotel. £12.50 for breakfast each morning I thought was a little bit steep the café over the road does a lovely omelette for £5 Average stay, helpful staff and clean rooms just a little busy and loud for my liking, I know the hotel cant hep this. upon checkout we were not asked about our stay nor given the opportunity to voice our concerns I normally like to give great reviews but on this occasion find this to be an average stay. Wi-Fi No good had to sit in a certain part of the room.

    « Disappointed »

The staff were friendly BUT....we ordered the Friday steak night deal . First we got the wrong wine having asked for Shiraz we got Merlot ( we did tell the guy in charge but said it was ok and we would drink it)then our meal was delivered to someone else's table and as they didn't notice straightaway we had to wait for it to be cooked again. We asked for stilton sauce as an accompaniment and have to say it didn't really taste of stilton( again we mentioned this to the guy in charge). Then to top it all we would have been overcharged, not by a lot but that's not the point, if I hadn't noticed. I would have expected to have been given discount after all the mishaps rather than have to point out the error. So overall really disappointed.

    « Anniversary break »

We have visited Moffat many times and chose the Moffat House Hotel as an anniversary treat for my parents. On arrival we were greeted by the very friendly manager who gave us all the information about the hotel and directions to our rooms. I was pleased to find that they had reserved a ground floor room for my parents. As I had requested, Our rooms were in an annexe next to the hotel, were very spacious, clean and well appointed. Our bed was huge and comfortable, the bathroom was clean, the only down side was the low pressure in the shower, but hot water was plentiful. Plenty of clean towels and the room was warm. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed sitting in the lounge and relaxing. The bar is well stocked, reasonably priced (for a hotel) we ate in the restaurant on the first night, the food was excellent, locally sourced and well presented. The restaurant has lovely views over the grounds, with an inviting outdoor seating area for warmer weather. Breakfast was delicious and very generous, my husband had the full scottish breakfast and it beat him, I can highly recommend the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, delicious. The staff were all very friendly and made a fuss of my parents when they found out it was their anniversary. They helped to make our stay very comfortable, the manager even reimbursed the 10% discount which should have been applied as a special offer for booking to eat in the restaurant, the manager was very apologetic and was sorted with no fuss. Moffat is a lovely place and we.would definately return to this hotel.

« Some good points but mainly not so good »

On arrival and after checking in we were directed to room 22 in an annex to the main part of the hotel. First impressions count for a lot and I'm afraid to say that they weren't good as just yards from the door into our room an old Christmas tree had been dumped across the ground in front of a wall.On entering the room which was a little tired and drab I checked the mattresses as I always do.One of them was fine but the second was in terminal decline with with a visible hollow in its middle.I complained to reception,a replacement mattress for that size of bed was not available so I had to accept one from a pull out bed which was OK but no better than that. After having had a walk around Moffat We returned to the hotel for a drink. I had a bottle of bitter and my wife a cappuccino. On checking out the next morning I found that this had cost me £8.70, that's correct £8.70 - a complete rip off. Later I went for a shower but the water pressure was so low that calling it a "shower" could be offending the trades description act. The good points -The excellent breakfast which was both plentiful and made up of good quality produce. Also the young waiter who served us at breakfast,I think he was called Kyle, was excellent. Nothing was to much trouble for him and it was definitely service with a smile. He almost salvaged a three star review but even though I was using a Groupon voucher the package was quoted as being worth a tad over £115 (B & B and a bottle of Prosecco) and based on that vluation I'm afraid I cannot score my experience as being any better than two stars.

    « Nice hotel »

Stopped overnight on way to Loch Lomond. Moffat is a lovely little town in south Scotland, worth a visit in its own right with lots is little walks about and about 25 minutes from Grey Mares Tail... Another nice walk. The hotel was clean, on the high street, and has its own little restaurant situated in a conservatory overlooking a nice garden (breakfast served in this room as well). Nice, clean, room. Good breakfast. Would stay again.

Have been to this hotel many times. Moffat is a lovely little town and we visit at least once a year in all seasons. One thing you can be guaranteed here is good food, excellent service in a brilliant setting. The gardens at the back are really pretty. Weren't staying at the hotel but came every day for our afternoon coffee and delicious shortbread and for drinks in the evenings. Have had a meal here on several occasions and have never been disappointed. People we spoke to were surprised it was also dog friendly. Can sit in absolute comfort with your pooch in front of the fire in large comfortable sofas. Can highly recommend it.

We went to Moffat House Hotel for 2 nights on a Groupon deal so when we arrived at hotel and was met with very friendly staff, when we got to our room on the top floor 2 flights of stairs 16 steps 1st flight 26 steps 2nd flight but we were a little disappointed with the room only because it was very dark by only having 1 small window but apart from that the room was very clean and warm with everything you need, when we went to restaurant we were not disappointed the meals were fantastic the service was perfect, I can recommend this Hotel very highly, The area and the town of Moffat is very good and plenty shops and other local attractions well worth a visit,

« Excellent Breakfast, lovely staff, great value »

My partner and I went here twice within the space of four weeks from a one night overnight, both on a Groupon £56 deal. On the first visit they had double booked our room, so we were given a free update to the four poster room which costs an extra £20. On arrival on the first day we were given a free bottle of Prosecco, which was lovely and defiantly not the cheap type. On the second visit we were given a bottle of lovely house red as they had run out of Prosecco. We only used this as a base to explore Moffat, and ate out on both occasions, which in hindsight was a mistake as the food in the Italian we went to was not very nice to say the least. So going by the breakfast we should have stayed at the Hotel. The breakfast was excellent, it was cooked fresh to order, served on warm plates and breakfast was nice and hot and fresh, none of that lukewarm buffet stuff you get all over the place. Our rooms were good, nothing too fancy but spacious and ticked the box for what we wanted. A nice quiet with really friendly staff who were genuinely interested in helping you. Would definitely recommend this to anyone.

    « Return visit »

Pleased to return at last after a break of 17 months to what used to be a favourite hotel. Yes, the friendly welcome and helpful still are still part of the establishment. The Chef has moved to the Buccleuch Arms, which is well worth visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Highly recommended. Dinner at the Moffat House Hotel was not only excellent, especially the steak, but Linsey was extremely helpful. The breakfast food itself was good ,the staff helpful and friendly, but the breakfast description on the menu did not resemble what appeared on the plate and had to be returned for the salmon to be put on and even then it did not match the description . Crumpet did not appear nor was it dressed with chives. A bit dissapointing. Tea and coffee orders were assumed , rather than being asked what we would like. Continental breakfast again, not as described on menu. Prices were fair, room was warm but bathroom rather dated. Excellent domestic staff . What a shame the computer was not in use in the library during our visit. Still, atmosphere and garden views are balm for the weary soul and restorative. Front has greatly improved and the lounge is very relaxing. Staff mean well and are very accommodating and pleasant. Will return.

    « Slightly disappointed »

A lovely friendly welcome on our arrival and directed to our room which was in an annexe. The room was huge, the bed big enough for a family of six and space enough for a party but definitely in need of some updating. Our disappointment started at 10pm when, what we could only assume was a boiler, kicked in and was louder than a Boeing 747 landing next to our room. The noise lasted just over 25 minutes and ended just before I was going to complain. The next challenge in the morning was the shower and my advice to any future occupant of room 20 would be to have a bath, far less stressful and you're guaranteed to get wet! I am sure that had our room been in the main hotel our experience would have been different it was just unfortunate that, for us, the hotel did not live up to our expectations.

The staff make this hotel worth a visit along with the excellent food. Huge portions! The steak pie was the best I have ever tasted. Beautifully cooked breakfast also. We had a very spacious room with a four poster bed. Unfortunately our friends had a very pokey room which really needed redecorating but it didn't spoil their enjoyment of the hotel. Located right in the heart of the town. Hope to revisit.

Definitely the place to go if you want a break away from everything. The hotel was clean and comfortable, the food was superb and the service second to none, it's in a beautiful setting and even though it's in the town centre it's extremely quiet.

« Felt like we were visiting our friends....... »

A return visit for us with our last stay one year ago. Upon checking in I found Zoe behind the front desk. She remembered me and the reason for our visit last year. She was so welcoming and helped arrange for a Valentine's Day special dessert delivery to our room. We love the cottage room. Plenty of space for our family of 4 and the flexibility of having the kitchen is wonderful. We had breakfast in the dining room every morning and it was wonderful. Ian was very helpful with his local knowledge and guidance on activities. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and it was delicious with great service. When it was time to check out we felt like we were leaving our friends behind. We love the quaint town of Moffat and highly recommend the Best Western Moffat House Hotel!

« Good hotel in a great location »

This was our third stay at this hotel. We booked via a groupon deal, but had to pay a little extra for our children to stay. We booked in the large family room, which has plenty of space for a family of 4. The hotel and rooms are very clean and tidy, with some furnishings becoming a little tired, but still acceptable. The staff are very helpful and friendly, the WiFi in the hotel is great, and the breakfast is very good! The location is ideal, Moffat is a nice village with plenty of places to eat & drink. will hopefully return later in the year.

« Not up to scratch »

Cold, condensation running down the inside of the windows, mould on Windows in room. Staff great, food not good. 'Chefs' not up to the menu as listed and the vegetables were a nightmare. Booked 3 nights and lasted one. Given the Groupon price it was reasonable value but not an enjoyable experience.

    « FAULTLESS »

Ignore the negative reviews about this hotel they are unfounded and unnecessary. We booked a two night deal with free bottle of prossecco. We were warmly welcomed into a very warm hotel [The weather outside was freezing] and found all the staff helpful and friendly. Our room was clean , bright and cosy with tea & coffee making facilities and complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. We found the menu for dinner to be reasonably priced and far less than you would expect for food of this quality. The first night we had sirloin steak and loin of venison both were excellent and cooked perfectly. On the second evening we had the home made Burger and the steak and ale pie, this pie is to die for! The chef here is obviously proud of what he produces and rightly so, a big pat on the back for him. Finally the breakfast which was included in the deal had a varied choice but the Full Scottish Breakfast was the best I have ever tasted. All in all this was a relaxing couple of days in pleasant and friendly surroundings. Do yourself a favour and try it.

    « Clean and comfortable »

I booked the Moffat House hotel for a work trip, mainly because it is a Best Western and we are diamond members. It was pretty much as expected. Staff were very friendly, the main building is lovely and grand. My room was in a stable-block type area and the entrance wasn't too promising, but the room was lively with four-poster bed & chaise longue. The bathroom was a little basic & there was no mini-bar. Breakfast seemed really expensive at £24 per person, so I chose not to eat it in the hotel.

    « Pleasantly Surprised! »

My wife and I were given a Groupon voucher as a gift by my son. We looked up the hotel and saw that it had received some mixed reviews so we arrived without any expectations. It was Valentine's weekend and we decided to book the Valentine's dinner £25 per head for 3 courses and a glass of bubbly. Our room was cozy and comfortable. There was a problem with our bathrooms heater which was rectified quickly. Service at dinner was great. All 3 courses were delicious and well presented, made using what were obviously high quality produce. This experience was replicated at breakfast, with my full Scottish breakfast being cooked to perfection, the haggis and black pudding were of good quality. I will happily return to this hotel on further occasions.

    « Family Get Together »

My husband and I stayed here for a famiky wedding. The room was very outdated and in need of a refurbishment as is the hotel overall. The staff service was very good. The wedding was very efficiently run. The food at the wedding was a carvery. This was delicious as was the breakfast we had before departing. It served its purpose and was nice to be staying in the same hotel as the rest of our family.

« Nice hotel in a nice location »

We visited Moffat for a few days over Christmas and stayed at this hotel. It was very pleasant and with friendly staff. The continental breakfast was a bit lacking in that no cold meats, cheese and the other things you get on the continent were missing. The bedroom was a bit off putting in that it was across the car park and it rained every day. It was comfortable though. The main bedrooms are in the main building, but we had not known about the others when we booked.

« Great location - very friendly Hotel »

We stayed in this Hotel for 2 nights and cannot fault it. Great location, lovely large room and excellent friendly helpful staff. This Hotel is very dog friendly. We have stopped off at Moffat on a few occasions on our way home from down South but this is the first time we have stayed in this lovely town. The Moffat House was spotlessly clean - huge well appointed room and the food and service were excellent. We hope to return very soon.

    « Overpriced »

Over priced.decor in bedroom a bit dated. Bar prices expensive. Had to ask for toast at breakfast which then came after we had finished eating. Moffat was nice & people friendly but should have chosen another hotel.

    « Lovely, comfortable hotel »

We booked a Groupon deal for one night and were presently surprised by this hotel. Our room was huge, comfortable bed, and lovely and warm. Breakfast was in conservatory overlooking the garden. I had fresh fruit salad to start and so good to see it was not out a tin.One of the best omlettes I have ever had and it is clear that they are using quality ingredients. Lovely, warm and welcoming staff.

    « Top class weekend »

We were lucky enough to book the cottage suite for the weekend which more than met our expectations. After moving our car to the private space outside the cottage we were met by a very modern and beautifully decorated kitchen. This led to a hallway with a side door that leads outside. The bathroom was spacious with a very powerful shower. Heading past the mirrored hallway leads you to a twin bedroom on the right and the master bedroom straight ahead. The master room is exceptional and lead onto our very own lounge which has breathtaking views of the mature gardens especially covered in snow. All in all the accommodation was fantastic, we ate in the hotel both days and the good was too notch. The manager Ian and waitress Ella were both very welcoming and helped us with a smile with anything we needed. We would definitely recommend this hotel and will be returning in the near future

    « Weekend away »

Me and my partner stayed for one night as we had a groupon voucher. The price was very reasonable and a bottle of prosecco was included. The room was spotless and nicely decorated and the staff were friendly and well mannered. Enjoyed the local pubs as it was snowing and found people welcoming. Will be returning.

« Quality Hotel nice location. »

This is a very nice hotel in a very picturesque town. The overall quality of the hotel is high. I found every thing to be good, Staff, food, room , bar all good. Book with confidence, I will use this hotel again.

« Comfortable, cosy and clean »

Had a lovely night in this hotel. We arrived in snowy conditions and found our room to be really cosy and comfortable with one of the biggest beds ever. had a great sleep. Had food in the hotel which was not particularly special but tasty and mid range. the bar and lounge was comfortable and reasonably peaceful to spend some time in with a drink and a good book. We were there in winter therefore spent more time in hotel than normally would. All in all a cosy welcoming experience

    4
    « Decent comfortable hotel »

This is Decent comfortable hotel. The restaurant is OK though fairly old fashioned. Rooms are well appointed. The lounge bar is comfy. Breakfasts are good. Well situated. The staff are polite and friendly . The only negative is some of the rooms can be on the small size

    5
« Helpful staff, lovely spacious family room »

We stayed on two occasions, both with two children and a baby. Our first stay was in room 21 which was lovely, so spacious and lovely comfy beds. Our second stay was in room 5, which was still fine but a little more dated and didn't have the same luxurious feeling as room 21. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Evening meals okay but a little pricey but bar lounge very comfy and cozy with an open fire. One of the nights we stayed there were floods and the hotel was short staff- however the manager seemed to go above and beyond to make sure no one noticed. We were impressed! We will keep using this hotel as it accomadates us as a family well.

« Great welcome and a great atmosphere »

We booked on spec, last minute arrangement - excellent customer handling, great welcome. The rooms were comfortable warm and everything worked. The food was good and everyone enjoyed their meals - 5 people all agreed it was a well chosen hotel. I will stay again. Value, excellent food, great bedrooms and parking very easy....

« Lovely Hotel, but the staff are exceptional »

Just spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at this wonderful hotel......Christmas day banquet fab. Best Christmas meal ever......But it's the lovely team of staff that make this place exceptional. Lead by Ian....Defo 11 out of 10.......Will definately be back......

    « Cottage stay »

Had an overnight stay in the hotel cottage. It is all ground floor level. Nice kitchen with everything you need. Lovely new beds, very comfortable. Lounge was cosy with nice furniture. Large screen TV with sky package. The cottage is right next to hotel on the main street. Everything is on your doorstep. Would definitely stay again.

« Beautiful house in charming location »

Felt the Best Western's booking web site wasn't easy to follow (not the Hotel's fault), meant we were locked into terms we hadn't expected, if closer to initial expectations, we would have rated the hotel higher, suggest terms are double checked before confirmation. It's a nice hotel with friendly and attentive staff. Dining menu, value and service good, quality ok. Room was smallish but ok, mainly for prejudice against mixer tapshowers! (seems an expertise in precision engineering is required to achieve optimum water temperature). Although bath ok, plenty of hot water. Surprised to have summer duvet in winter. All in all would ensure concerns addressed at time of booking and would be happy to return to this charming place.

    « Superb »

Lets be clear this is not a 6* Hotel but it is a lovely friendly place where nothing was too much trouble. My wife and I stayed for an anniversary night away and all the requests I had made were delivered, Champagne, chocolates and a beautiful bouquet of flowers plus they had sprinkled rose petals on the bed which was a very thoughtful touch. The decoration is not recent but its clean, well presented and homely so no complaints at all. My only observation would be that the restaurant menu was a bit inconsistent, fantastic starters and desserts, imaginative and beautifully presented Vs quite pedestrian mains with little thought to presentation but still well cooked. Moffat is a lovely country town right outside the front door and worth a wander around yet step back into this charming Hotel and you could be in any country house hotel. We will certainly be back to the Moffat House and a big thanks to the team for a lovely stay.

« Brilliant for the price »

For the price we paid this hotel was brilliant. The staff were very very good and the hotel itself was very good looking. We stayed for one night as a stop over and it was perfect for us. The bathrooms are a bit outdated and could do with updating but function fine and the matrices was squeaky but apart from that it was great.

    4
    « Great value »

Although getting a little tired the hotel is very comfortable. The staff are all excellent, food outstanding and even better when you see the prices. Overall a great nights stopover, I will go back soon.

    « Baldwin's »

We had a great weekend break here. The room was clean and had a view of the front courtyard. The staff were excellent very friendly. The food was excellent and good value for money. We arrived down for an evening meal slightly after 9.00pm but the chef was still happy to cater for us. We will be returning to this hotel in the future.

« good for the price »

I had a very quick stay here while on a business trip - arrived 7.45 pm and away by 8.00 the next morning. Staff were welcoming and advised me that last orders for dinner was 8.30. Dinner it's self was very good - nice menu and served promptly with a nice real ale from the bar. Single room was tidy if a little dated. My acid test is always breakfast - freshly cooked fry hit the spot. Not the high of luxury but pleasant comfortable and value for money

« Not as good as it looks »

Recent review taken off by mistake. Unfortunately our stay proved to be an expensive bittersweet end to a lovely holiday. Shortly after checking into my family room with a 2 year old and 9 year old, the rest of my family had gone to bed and whilst they were asleep I had a shower, on stepping back into the room I trod on a small screw (which was from the carpet grip) it cut my foot quite deeply. Once dressed I reported this and the door hanging off the hinges to the reception, I was met with no apology or concern for my injury instead I was told it would be reported to maintenance who would look into it the following day. On checking out the following day I was unhappy with the outcome and informed another staff member at the reception as well as reporting other issues I had with the room such as the mould on the window frames and expressed my unhappiness with the service I had received the previous day and requested to speak to the manager. He apologised and informed me that the manager would not be in until the next day and that he would get him to contact me. The following day I had to call the hotel myself and was told that the manager was not in again and that they would email to get him to call me. I contacted Best Western themselves after still no phone call and they got in contact with the hotel and it turned out the manager was off sick, which wouldnt have been so much of problem if I was told originally! When the manager finally called 2 days after I had made the complaint, I was then told that I hadnt told the reception on the first day that I had cut my foot or that the door was coming off the hinges and that the manager would investigate futher and get back to me - so far no follow up call! Also although the issue of the food and service in the restaurant was dealt with on the day I feel that it just helped to sour the experience considering the room had cost £85.50. With regards to contact we have received 1 phone call with no follow up. No email as no email address was left. Also dont think that this post is solely put on, on the basis of receiving compensation, it was a last resort after waiting for some resolution of a complaint that was poorly handled.

« Not as good as it looks »

We stayed here on the 22nd of november it looked nice when we arrived. We went to our room my wife and two young kids went and had a sleep i went and had a shower when i got out of the shower i did not see that a screw (which I now know was from the carpet grip) had come out and was on floor, I trod on it and it cut my foot. I took the screw down to reception and told the lady what had happend she said "is it stopping the door closing?" I said no she said "ok ill get that looked at tomorrow thank you" she did not say sorry about my foot or ask if i was ok. In the morning I spoke to the young man at reception and told him what had happened and asked him for Best Western email he said sorry for what had happened. When we first got there we had to ask for heating to be put on and was told it was on a timer but they ended up putting it on, there was also mould around windows, the bathroom door was coming away off its hinges. I ended up talking to the manager after 2 days of chasing and having to call Best Western head office, he tild me that we wasnt informed I had cut my foot because I apparently had not informed the lady on the desk, which I had. I was told that the windows needed repainting and that we got the room at a good rate!! Good rate or not i do not expect to pay £85.50 for a room where I cut my feet have mould on the window frames, the door coming of its hinges and the fuse box in the main hall way with a cable hanging out of it. The manager then referred to where I had stayed the previous night and said to me "I'm sure you paid more for there rooms" I explained that it didnt matter where I stayed prior to my stay at this hotel that I would expect high standards when paying a high price for my room. I was told he would contact me once he had looked into it and am still waiting for a phone call!! Also we booked dinner before 3pm for 6.30pm and we were a party of 13 adults and 4 children and we had one person serving us so our meal service was poor and we ended up finishing our meal at 9.30pm. All in all a very poor experience for the high price we paid and very low standards.

    « Great Weekend »

Great hotel in a great location. Food, service and staff were all first class. A cheap weekend with friends turned out to be surprisingly luxurious after we were allocated a room with a four poster. Couldn't find anything to winge about at all.

Absolutely excellent. Great service, lovely and friendly. Excellent food. Highly recommended. Beds very comfy. Very good Scottish breakfast. Immaculate rooms. Deserves to keep busy. Would definitely recommend. We have stayed her now numerous times. We keep going back as its set in a beautiful location in the heart of Moffatt. There is lots of shops to look round and everyone is so friendly. Thank you

« Comfortable and great price »

Stayed here for one night to break up our journey up to oban. Hotel Was nice, easy check in. Stayed in a room just in the courtyard. Was very spacious and the bed was massive. Dog friendly. Only downside was the bathroom/shower. Water pressure extremely poor and was either scalding hot or ice cold. Had we stayed here more than one night this would have been a problem.

    4
« Excellent staff and service - dog friendly too »

A lovely friendly Hotel set in a really nice town. The staff were some of the best I have had the pleasure to meet. Bar is comfortable and friendly and the food is good. The menu is a little limited but is of good quality and good value. Breakfast is first class. The hotel is old fashioned and quirky, which we love. Beware though, there are no lifts, so if you stay on the upper floors and find stairs difficult then you may struggle. That said I would go back again without any hesitation. Dog friendly too. They allow dogs to stay and adopt a sensible policy with regard to access. Dogs allowed in most areas but not the restaurant. That said meals are also served in the bar area, so no problem if you are a dog owner.

« Stop over in Moffat »

Pleasant hotel and friendly staff . Very dog friendly too which we needed.food was very Tasty and well presented . Poor selection of wines which was a disappointment .hotel has a good garden at the rear and plenty of parking at the front and because it's on the high street it's within easy walk of shops, pubs, restaurants etc. Overall a nice town to stop in for a night or two .

    « A friendly welcome »

Moffat House Hotel is a lovely hotel with friendly staff who want to make your stay enjoyable - a lovely welcome to Scotland in a good location just off the M6. We had the 2-bedroom cottage suite which was well appointed and very spacious. WiFi did not connect in the cottage but otherwise this was a very enjoyable stay and we would return without hesitation :)

« Good stay but noisy »

I booked a 3 night room only stay for £116 which was non refundable and I thought that was a great price as some bed & breakfast places in Moffat charge £70 per night (inc breakfast though) The hotel is an imposing traditional Country House Hotel and it is in beautiful grounds. The staff were very helpful and I got a free upgrade on my room as the initial one I was given was quite small and dated. The bar area was comfortable and I really enjoyed my breakfast. The downside for me was that my room was at the front of the hotel near the front door and it being a large solid wood door, every time someone came in or went out it slammed LOUDLY, it woke me up numerous times with a jump. Then the cleaning staff were hoovering at 8am! The last thing you want when expecting a quiet relaxed weekend away. I cannot complain too much as I didn't bring it to the attention of the hotel mainly because I had already been given an upgrade and I felt too cheeky.

« Booked into the cottage attached to the hotel, what a find !! »

What a beautiful cottage! Pristine throughout. Really comfy beds. This well appointed cottage had everything one would ever need in the kitchen! The shower was fabby - never got the chance to try out the whirlpool bath however, next trip. The hotel staff were great and pointed us in the direction of the good walks. Can't wait to go back x

    3
    « Funny little place »

Stayed on a very cheap corporate rate so shouldn't really complain. Single room was comfortable enough but the shower was barely big enough even for a 5 ft 9 inch skinny person. Couldn't get connectivity to the wifi but with such a fleeting visit, was not enormously disappointed. Breakfast was fine, albeit the coffee was stewed (it is help yourself from an urn) and I got the full Scottish despite not wanting the black pud and haggis - still, these were left on the side. Juices were a bit wishy washy and not up to the normal Best-Western standard elsewhere where I have stayed extensively. Staff were fine but you could detect an undercurrent - not sure what had upset one of them!! Frankly, was glad to be on my way early the next day.

    « Lovely staf »

Booked this last minute, lovely place so a bit of luck. Atmospheric old Regency manor house just inside the pretty village of Mofatt. We had a four poster bed in a well appointed very clean room, decorated in true manor house style. The food was good, they cater for food intolerances, the prices reasonable. Staff were very helpful and friendly and I really enjoyed my stay. If you like country manor houses and need a quiet country break, this is the place.

    5
« Super little cottage annex to hotel »

We stayed for 2 nights in the little cottage annex to the Moffat House Hotel. It was clean, warm, cosy, and a total bargain. I was worried about potential noise from the main road or the adjoining hotel but the cottage has thick stone walls and is set back from the road in a quiet corner so no noise problems at all. Highly recommended.

    « Nice Enough »

We called in on spec at about 8 p.m. en route from Edinburgh to Lancashire. Had a reasonable room on the 1st floor, a bit old fashioned but comfortable enough, although very expensive for what you get and MUCH more than the internet price as I found out later, so rather annoying (£109 r.o. compared with £75). Has a bar meal that was O.K., nothing special, rather a drab bar area. Service was O.K. but the staff didn't seem that interested, they didn't seem local, or at least didn't know anything about the area! Nice Scottish breakfast in the pretty dining room in the morning overlooking the hotel's parkland, the best part of our brief stay, but again rather pricey at an extra £12.50 p.p. O.K. but wouldn't go back especially.

    5
« Make sure Best Western Get it Right »

If you book centrally with Best Western make sure they pass on your full request to the Hotel. They did not with me and as a result I did not get the two rooms I specifically asked for meaning my 93 year old mother suffering from osteoporosis and confined to a wheel chair had to climb steps to get to her room, eat her meals in her room and located well away frrom my wife and I rather than being on the level and adjacent. That said I would still strongly recommend Moffat House as the staff and facilities are excellent. It is Best Western that need to pull their socks up!!

    4
    « Above average »

Stayed here last night , found it way above average. This is obviously a one night "in transit" stop over hotel , but we found that the staff treated us like long stay guests. Check in was pleasant and with a smile and this continued in all encounters with staff , both bar and breakfasting staff. Breakfast was very good , served looking out onto the grounds , very pleasant. We would certainly return if ever in the area again.

    3
« Pleasant hotel with unconfortable bed and over-priced »

Stopped overnight en route from the Highlands to the Midlands. Efficient but not particulalrly friendly receptionist. Room was large and had a very grand looking 4-poster bed. However, it also looked a little tired/dated and when closely examined most of the facilities were no better, if as good, as the £50 per night B&B we had stayed in for several days previously. The bed was uncomfortable and my wife in particular slept badly and awoke with severe backache. Breakfast was served in the conservatory and was fine although the service was not very quick. The guy on reception when we checked out was very friendly and helpful and promised to look into the question of the uncomfortable bed. It is unlikely that I would stay here again.

« Cottage comforts, home from home . »

When booking for this hotel we found they also had this great cottage next to the main hotel . The cottage was excellent inside all newly refurbished with a fully equipped kitchen diner , two large bedrooms , huge bathroom with whirlpool bath and a lounge the cottage was serviced by the hotel and all bedding towels etc provided . The staff of the hotel we're helpful and friendly and food in the restaurant was good. The cottage opened at the back onto the lovely hotel garden and had it's own patio area. A great place for adults or families as a stopover when travelling through Scotland or a place from where you can explore Dumfries and Galloway we will certainly use it again so relaxing and in the centre of this pretty market town . My ratings are for the cottage but the hotel a Best Western was good too.

    4
    « Get the 'cottage' »

Four of us stayed here and they put us up in what they call the 'cottage' - a very smart 2 bedroom apartment - and with a kitchen and living room. Much better than two hotel rooms and quite a lot cheaper.
