    « Charity dinner »

we visited staying over for a charity dinner at the Hotel. Room was clean and tidy staff friendly. The dinner was very good it is unusual to have such good quality food at a mass catering event, the food was well cooked and tasty. my only one small thing is there are lots of steps and you have to go outside to get to the function room.

    « Wedding party weekend »

Having just got back from a wonderful weekend at the castle green I would like to thank management and staff for a fantastic 3 night's. We arrived on the Friday night having traveled from Malvern our room was on the top floor looking over the garden it was clean and had everything we needed. We then had a meal in the restaurant we choose the taster menu with the wine joices each coarse was perfectly cooked and pressented except the sweet which we found bland .Saturday was our friend's wedding and everything was perfect. Sunday we took a stroll into Kendal as we used to live ' there not much had changed we had a taxi back then had a meal in the bar I had the sausage and mash Sheila had fish and chips after a hetic wkend we had an early night in our large comfortable bed all in all a fantastic weekend and would certainly recommend the castle green to our friend's.

    « Don't miss Breakfast »

We stayed here for one night recently en route to Aberdeen. After a good experience with the Best Western Premier brand recently, I was happy to book a stay here. On the whole not disappointed. Breakfast was included in our rate and it is definitely worth it. Shop around the comparison sites and one can get a good deal. All the usual suspects are served on the buffet but the extra touches were good. Bread from a local bakery instead of the usual cut loaves etc. The cumberland sausages appear to be the genuine thing, I would assume from a local butcher. Well for the rest. Friendly staff. Nice bathrooms. Ample parking -if you have a heavy bag it is probably worth driving to the top to check in as the main car park involves slopes and steps, Bed and pillows could be more comfortable. We had dinner in the pub on the premises but the food appear of the microwave variety. If I go again I would try the main dining room.

« Good value, friendly, service and facilities »

This family owned hotel is well run, has a good range of facilities and mixes tourists and business visitors well. Good choice of formal dining or more relaxed 'pub atmosphere' dining. Standard rooms are well fitted but on the slightly small side. Good pool and spa. Also have large well maintained gardens and a woodland to walk through.

    « Ok stay »

Stayed here for a wedding reception. The room was clean and dare I say quite basic. The rooms did have toiletries and lovely large fluffy towels, only enough milk for a coffee each in the morning. The rooms are pleasantly decorated, but it was quite chilly until the heating kicked in. The corridors leading to the rooms were also chilly. The bar was pretty expensive £25 for a bottle of prosecco, £5.10 for a double rum and coke. The breakfast was ok, self service very hot, all the normal items available bacon, sausage fried and scrambled eggs, beans, grilled tomatoes, hash browns and black pudding. There was also a selection of pastries available. We paid £153 for b & b, which was supposed to be discounted due to being guests at the wedding. I have to say for the price I have stayed in better places.

« Defiantly will be Back »

Just had a lovely stay at Castle Green Hotel, and would defiantly recommend and return. All the staff are professional, polite, and well organised, Our room was a Standard room facing part of the car park and the Garden. It was a little way from the reception but no problem for us. We enjoyed watching the squirrels in the Garden from our window. The Room was lovely and quiet, with Good Black out Curtains, Lovely Comfortable Bed, Modern Furnishing and immaculately clean. Also Good toiletry, plus a Safe, Iron, and Iron Board, Hairdryer, and a Clock that you can actually see from the bed. A small walk in Wardrobe, lots of hanging space and Draw Space, A Table and Chairs. The radiators are Electric so no clicking pipes waking you up when the heating comes on, (which you will always get in old building and we have always encountered in most hotel we have stayed in) we had no problem adjusting the settings. Breakfast we could not fault. We have stayed in other hotels in the Lake District and this was one of the most enjoyable breakfast we have had. It is a buffet, you can just help yourself to as much as you want from the buffet and all was hot. Bacon, Sausages, Hash browns, Beans, Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Scrambled eggs, Fried eggs, plus Cereal, Fruit, Yoghurt, Smoothies, and a lot more. If you prefer poached egg, just ask the waiters, and the chef will cook it for you fresh, and then you can just help yourself to anything else from the buffet. Coffee, Tea and Toast will be brought to your table. Lovely view from the window while having Breakfast. You can get room service for breakfast for a £5 service charge. There is also room service for evening meal for the same service Charge. We did have an enjoyable meal in the Alexander. Recommend that you book a Table it can get busy especially at weekends. I do have a Small comment we found it uncomfortably hot, especially if you sit on the tables beside the radiator. (Management maybe turn down your heating a little) When you turn into the drive way, the hotel looks impressive with lovely well kept Gardens. When we arrived the bottom carparks where full, what we didn't realise is it is a conference hotel, and that was why the car parks where full. If you drive up the hill to the receptionist there is a car park right beside the reception, so you don't need to park in the bottom car parks. When you turn in the hotel gates just carry on up the hill to reception. Have to say that the conferences and functions do not Impact on the Hotel in any way. Free wifi a little slow at times especially when there is a lot of people using it, but not a problem, There is no lift, so recommend that you book a room on ground floor If you find it difficult climbing stairs. The staff will happily help you with your cases on arrival. We did walked into the town Centre it will take you about 30 minutes and is a pleasant Walk, To sum up, Would we return Definitely. Would we recommend Definitely. Did we have a good time, Definitely. Need I say more. Thank you Castle Green for a lovely stay, we will return hopefully soon.

« Nice hotel, little out of centre, average overall »

Nice looking hotel. Under some renovation whilst we stayed with workmen and paint pots here and there. Check in / out was quick. Great breakfast choice and good quality. Rooms not very big, very clean and tidy, but expected more luxury/size for £130 a night if I'm honest. Staff friendly enough, but some seemed inexperienced eg slow service at bar with 2 of them looking at each other 'you serve not me'...Booked taxi, hadn't arrived, then chased but receptionist couldn't remember which taxi firm she'd ordered with...no tea/coffee arrived until we'd practically finished breakfast and had to chase 3 times! Bit disappointed....

    « Very nice »

Very nice hotel, 10 minute stroll from the town. Large carpark which is hidden from view when in the hotel. Good decor in room with excellent view across to wooded hills and sunset. Very quiet. Tasty breakfast but too expensive for me what it is. Nice staff.

« Short but very sweet »

We only stayed overnight but after a long drive the welcome of the reception team and the comfort of this hotel, was very much appreciated. We had dinner with friends in the restaurant and the service was very good. The food was most enjoyable and a good evening was had by all. Unfortunately we didn't have time to use the spa facilities but we will be back and will make sure it is for a longer break. The hotel is very well positioned on the outskirts of Kendal and the views are stunning.

    « Excellent Stay »

Can't fault this hotel. From the moment we arrived we were met by a very pleasant receptionist. All the staff we encountered during our stay were friendly, professional and polite. We stayed on a B&B basis for 2 nights in a Garden View / Shower room. The room itself did have an excellent view and did have a balcony with seating complete with cushions and blankets. Although not the biggest room we have stayed in it had everything we needed including two chairs to use. The breakfasts served in the Green Room restaurant were excellent and had a selection of cold and hot buffet options. We ate our evening meals in Alexanders pub next door (part of the hotel) and they were very good although not the biggest menu. In the evening there is a very nice lounge bar in the hotel for a drink and has a glass fronted log fire. You can either pay cash or charge it to your room. A pint of real ale was £3.60 which I thought was reasonable for this type of hotel. Lots of available parking in the hotel grounds. Kendal itself is about 1 mile away (downhill). We walked in one day and it took us about half an hour as I was pushing a wheelchair otherwise it's about a 20 min walk if you are fully mobile. We got a taxi when returning to the hotel as it would have been impossible to push a chair uphill all the way back. Taxi cost was £6/£7 pound. There is a bus stop 100 yards from the hotel (42A) which reception can show you a timetable for. Overall we really enjoyed this hotel and wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

    « Excellent Food »

Just home from a two night break, we had dinner both evenings in the greenhouse resturant. The quality and care taken over the food is exceptional. The bedrooms are spotless ,beds are very comfortable. All staff are very nice. Looking forward to our next break at the Castle Green.

    « Lovely break »

A lovely clean modern hotel. All staff were so nice. Would like to give a special thanks to Lydia at reception. Nothing was too much bother and she took time out to answer all our questions on booking a return visit. Hang on to her a valuable member of staff.. Food was delicious and service was excellent. Just one little complaint the quilt on the double bed was actually two single quilts taped up the middle and was quite annoying at times as the tape was quite irritating. Forgot to mention this to Lydia. Overall had a wonderful time. Mr and Mrs Dheer

« Lovely hotel - can't wait to go back already »

This was our second time staying at this hotel. We stayed here a year ago and loved it and the surrounding area so much we decided to go back this year, and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. The room (and actually hotel in general) was very nice, really cosy and incredibly clean. The bed is hands down the most comfortable I've ever stayed in. Such a great night sleep! The curtains are very heavy so block out any light which is great for a lie in. The pool was nice and warm but a little busy when we were there early in the morning. Steam room was great too. Lovely gardens and a lovely quick wee walk up at the back of the hotel. The staff were excellent, super friendly especially Jill who was very helpful. Best points for last - the views/gardens and the breakfast. Breakfast is SO GOOD!! Hot cooked breakfast (with additional items to order if you want, e.g. we got additional veggie sausages), fruits, muesli, cereal and yogurts and pastries. It was amazing! The grounds are beautiful and very colourful this time of year. Really recommend this hotel. Can't wait to go back!

    « Wonderful hotel »

We stayed in the hotel with our two year old daughter. Enjoyed our stay there, nice staff. Good breakfast, had a nice meal in Alexander's. There is a wonderful garden, must be a brilliant spot during summer. The walk to the city was perhaps 20 minutes.

« Great weekend stay over »

We booked a late weekend break through the hotel website as found this cheaper than other booking comparison sites. Great location for visiting Windermere and Ambleside. The hotel itself couldn't be faulted in any way, clean and modern set in a peaceful location. We ate in the Alexander bar and was very impressed, beautiful meal and great service. The rooms have a lovely relaxed feel to them. We used the pool and steam room which I would recommend. A great choice for breakfast, you could taste the quality and freshness. Overall a lovely weekend break would recommend this hotel

« Great breakfast, good pool »

The hotel is set about 20 minutes' walk from the town centre. The most pleasant way into town is to leave the hotel, turn left, and then right ? and then head downhill until you hit (the obvious) road into town. You could then meander about in town, and catch a bus back from the bus station, or complete a circular walk ? leave town on the A684 along Sedbergh Road to Castle Green Road (the map given by the hotel wasn't quite right on that last bit, so use your instinct and common sense!). We stayed at the hotel mid-week in October, just before half-term, and it wasn't too busy. Breakfast was excellent ? the range of choice was about the best we've experienced in the UK, and can be highly recommended. We didn't use the restaurant in the evening ? it seemed very expensive, and the bar menu served our needs just fine. Strangely, the menu in our room listed cold and hot sandwiches as being available in the bar, but the near-identical menu in the bar itself only listed hot ones. The bar staff couldn't explain why, but happily gave us the cold ones we wanted anyway. We choose a premium room with a shower and balcony. The room and bathroom were slightly on the small side, given the furniture in the room. It might have felt a bit cramped and claustrophobic but for the windows and pleasant balcony, which overlooked the fields towards town. But, on the whole, it was fine for our 3-night stay. The pool in the hotel is very good ? but beware the strictly observed times when children are allowed in. The steam room is good too ? I liked the soothing music and ever-changing ceiling lights. I didn't use the gym, but it seemed pretty busy each night while we were there. We would be happy to stay in the hotel again.

« Hotel exceeded our expectations. »

Our reception was friendly and helpful (very welcome after a 7 hour drive), and our accommodation was roomy and clean with an excellent view out over the gardens. The bathroom was clean and plenty of hot water and all the toiletries you would need. In the bedroom there was a plentiful supply of tea and coffee making ingredients. We would stay here again and thoroughly recommend the restaurant for both choice, quality and service.

« Comfortable stay out of town »

Visited Castle Green en route to a family wedding. I read some info which said that the hotel was voted Best Best Western hotel in the uk and had recently had a refit. The check in was smooth and welcoming and our room was just off the Reception area but wasn't noisy. Rooms comfortable with garden views and lovely bed added to a relaxing overnight. The gym is crowded but adequate and the pool a nice addition to have a dip in after a workout. The food choice in the restaurants were either v fancy or basic fare and I struggled to find something tempting. I had the prawn and salmon salad which was average lots of lettuce pre dressed and masses of red onion. My husband had a salt beef sandwich in the bar. Again passable but not amazing. The hotel is out of town in pretty surroundings although the Reception area by the door could be tidier, there is a smoking area there and some sad looking topiary which doesn't greet your eyes terribly well. You may need to think about dinner reservations if you aren't venturing out. Alexanders was full at 7.30 pm with a 45 min wait on a Thursday night. Breakfast is a buffet affair you can order eggs, kippers etc so i found out afterwards. Breakfast staff didn't tell is about what was being offered aside from the buffet which was a shame as i love poachers! In summary, comfortable and cosy bedrooms with pleasant staff on hand, but do your home work on dining options at night.

    « Stop over »

Stopped over in the hotel on the way to Scotland and had a fabulous time. Excellent rooms, comfortable lounge, roaring Fire, David on reception was fab and what can we say about Brandon Finch- he was amazing making us feel so special and went over and above to make our stay memorable. Will stay again

    « An amazing hotel »

A very nice place, the room was small but nice, clean, and had everything you could want, including a safe, the swimming pool was great we used it every day, the staff were all friendly and willing to help with anything. We ate in the bar and the restaurant and all the food was amazing, the breakfast had a huge choice and was all very nice, not cheap but worth every penny, the surrounding area is very nice with plenty to do. We are looking forward to going back.

« Maids are quite noisy! »

My partner and I stayed here for two nights. Reception we're welcoming when we arrived, and the food was lovely in the pub restaurant. We had room service which again, was excellent. The only small complaint would be that the maids were very noisy early in the morning, there seemed to be a lot of crashing around which woke us up both mornings. Apart from that we would stay here again!

    « A very disappointing evening meal »

We have stayed at this hotel in the past and found it satisfactory, but just stopping by for dinner was very disappointing. For a four star hotel, it would have been better if the dining room had been a bit warmer, the food a bit more interesting [I never like small portions on huge plates], and the delays shorter. We waited for 45 minutes after our starters before the main course arrived, and none of the staff seemed to notice or apologise

    5
    « Amazing »

Fantastic staff. Clean and inviting. Breakfast is of a very high standard. Also Nice views when having breakfast. Good choices and lovely local produce. You won't be disappointed if you choose this hotel.

    « Ahll be back ! »

Stayed for 2 night break and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The whole place was spotless, food was great and the staff couldn't have been anymore helful. Liesure Pool area needs a little bit more lightening up as it looks a wee bit dull, but thats just my own observance. Stayed at this hotel a few years back but since then its had a real good facelift. No complaints and as Arnie says..Ahll be Back !

    « Good overnight stay »

We stayed overnight on our way to Scotland. We booked a garden view room which was lovely though small. It was also quite hot in the room. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. Breakfast was buffet and very nice, lots of choice of local produce and was well cooked. The grounds and location are lovely and we would stay again.

    5
    « Two away days »

Very nice room 169 but quite a walk from reception. Plenty of choice though. Lovely situation in parkland.Plenty of parking. Good breakfasts and very pleasant staff.Pool and gymnasium looked immaculate.

    5
« Excellent in every way »

We have stayed at Castle Green many times and it never fails to amaze me,there is nothing I can fault with this hotel, the food is excellent, the staff are wonderful, all bedrooms are furnished to a high degree and the views from the hotel are superb, and to top all that there is a pub in the grounds (Alexander's) where you can purchase bar snacks or an evening meal.

    5
« Great rooms, service, food »

I was going to take off a point because the family room situation is not ideal and is much better at other hotels. However, I have always had such good experiences at the Castle Green, it makes up for the slightly annoying family room situation. I highly recommend this place, but if you are travelling with more than one child, there aren't any connecting rooms, and although big, the family room doesn't really have a good separate area for kids.

    4
    « A family break »

After a long journey we were greeted and made to feel welcome at reception. The rooms were warm and clean. We had a fabulous view across the valley and the sunset that evening We dined in Alexanders, I would recommend the lamb shoulder it was beautiful, my wife enjoyed the fish pie and I would try that next time up there if it is still available Breakfast was excellent, service friendly even if the chef was a bit grumpy as he had to make scrambled egg for two of us. We ate in the main restaurant that night and it was good again, chateabriand was great but the sirloin not the best I have eaten but certainly not the worst. On the last evening we opted for the restaurant again and we had four empty plates again at the end, pork chop being ??. Will be back?? Only downside was that the leisure facilities were closed for two days of our stay.

« Wonderful hotel in beautiful location »

Before booking our trip to the Lake District, we considered staying in a cheaper hotel much nearer the town, but are so glad we didn't. This hotel is a mile or more from Kendal, so not a short stroll to the shops, but it is great if you want to be at peace and surrounded by lovely countryside. The hotel itself is an attractive building in beautiful grounds with lots of car parking below. We parked at reception to unload and then parked in the bottom car park - no problem at all. The reception staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was at the back of the hotel, which meant it was quiet and peaceful. It wasn't a big room, but had a good sized bed with table and chairs, a desk, TV and plenty of hanging and drawer space. The only let down was the bathroom. It was immaculately clean and the toiletries were nice, but the shower was one of the smallest I have seen. This is not a problem in the sense that we are not big people, but I am short and the shower head was up so high and could not be adjusted! There was no bath. We ate in the adjacent Alexander's bar on two nights and in the hotel on the other, and the food was excellent and good value. The staff were polite, friendly and knowledgeable about what was on the menu. Breakfast was an excellent experience: nice tables and chairs with tea and toast brought to the table and a wide variety of fruit, yogurt, cereals, breads, croissants and pastries. I noticed that the yogurts were from Little Town Dairy (very Beatrix Potter!) so it is good to see that the hotel is using local produce. Butter was on little dishes, not wrapped in foil and we had individual jam, marmalade and honey pots. My husband had the cooked fare and said this was good. The breakfast staff were again polite, well organised and efficient. On one morning we had a table by the window and could look out at the grounds, which are well kept, with mature trees and shrubs. This is a lovely hotel and I wished we could have stayed longer. I would certainly stay here again, but would investigate booking a room with a bath or at least a larger shower cubicle with an adjustable shower head!

    « Nice place »

Stayed here recently on a business trip. Rooms were nicely update and clean, although a bit on the small side. The bed and pillows were quite comfortable. Bathroom was small too but nicely appointed. Staff was excellent and enjoyed a nice dinner at the adjoining pub. They also offered a very nice breakfast in the morning. Highly recommend.

    « Pleasant comfortable stay »

Stayed here for 3 nights on business. Check in relatively quick. Bit of a trek to bedroom...not served by lift in this part of the hotel. Ok for me with a fairly light case but difficult to negotiate heavy fire doors at the same time. Might cause a problem for less agile guests. Room clean and comfortable. Good quality bedding. Surprised to find that window wasn't double glazed. Quite old frames and not fitting very well which caused draughts and could hear the rooks cawing at night which did nothing to enhance sleep quality. Room was cold even with heater which was not that effective. Good quality toiletries in bathroom. Powerful overhead shower. Only had a bath towel in room so had to ring reception for a hand towel but this was quickly delivered to room. Hairdryer needs replacing...only one heat and far too hot. Free wifi, but a bit slow in bedroom. Excellent food in dining room at both breakfast and dinner. Good choice from menu and food quickly served and was of high quality. All in all a comfortable stay and would visit again if in the area.

    « Good Hotel Parking a challenge »

This hotel has a large car park on 3 levels and I recommend that you unload at the reception before parking. If you require a disabled space then talk to the hotel when booking. Not many disabled spaces for a hotel of this size.If you have to park on the lower level then just hope its not raining. The hotel is good, restaurant excellent, dinner good and breakfast very good.Staff are lovely and well trained. My only reason fro 4 stars is the parking issue and I believe the hotel can provide more disabled parking spaces.

    « Excellent »

Stayed for a long weekend at the end of September and the hotel fitted the bill for us perfectly. The reception bar and restaurant area were spacious and friendly. All of the staff are incredibly friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Breakfast was amazing with all you could ask for and always served with a smile. Our room was small but perfectly adequate, the bathroom was great with an amazing shower, however the toilet was a bit close to the opposite wall. Overall this hotel is lovely and an ideal few days away in the Lake District.

« Excellent stay in Kendal. »

We have stayed here many times over the last 14 years and never yet been disappointed. The food is to die for and the staff cannot do enough to make the stay memorable. I have always said that we would never stay anywhere else in the area.

    « Our wedding day »

We got married here in July, from start to finish through the booking process to checking out the day after our wedding every single member of staff was amazing. The breakfast was beautiful both mornings and the day after our wedding we went for breakfast and a just married balloon was brought to our table which made it extra special! The food for our wedding breakfast was beautiful and everyone commented on how perfect everything was!

« Good venue, good food »

Our daughters had bought us this weekend away at Castle Green for our 40th wedding anniversary. we had a very enjoyable time here, staff where friendly and helpful. The food was excellent, and drinks reasonable priced. A very clean well kept hotel with excellent gardens. Within a 25 minutes walk to Kendal with nice views.Steep in places if you have difficulty walking but not a bad walk at all. This is a busy venue for meals so would always book in advance. We had bed breakfast and evening meals, never disappointed, always well prepared dishes. With good service, well attended to with nice staff always on hand to help if required. We would definitely go back.

Very beautiful settings and spacious bedroom good food good entertainment and very professional staff..would recommend this hotel. As w arrived it was flawless check in and our room was on the ground floor as we had chosen. Reception staff was pleasant too. We felt as if we were at home away from home.

« Friends wedding at Castle Green »

What gives this place the edge is the lovely views you get on the balcony leading from the venues function room. The surrounding area is very beautiful a lovely place to take a few wedding photos for sure. The food we received on the wedding day was really nice. My main, Beef with seasonal veg and a mushroom sauce was cooked to perfection. The sticky toffee pudding that followed was also very moreish. The staff were attentive and helpful, very organised service throughout the day! A very nice venue for the wedding service and also the night do afterwards. If go back to one of their events or even just for a meal in the restaurant. 5/5!

    « Wedding weekend »

We got married at the castle green hotel in September...from beginning to end the staff were superb. So helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They made all our guests feel welcome. All the little extra touches were lovely especially the toast! Lol. Would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a lovely break or a venue for a special occasion.....

« Short Stop One Night Only »

From making the telephone booking, through to arrival, dining and check-out the staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. The food in the restaurant was well prepared and very nicely presented, there was a good wine list at sensible prices. There were facilities at the hotel which we did not have time to use, but would have been great for a longer stay. For me there is no such thing as a bad location in the Lake District but this hotel is particularly week placed with easy access from the motorway and subsequently into Kendal itself. Will definitely return.

    « Service with a smile! »

We have made this our regular stop-over when we make a trip down south. It is a wonderful hotel with excellent service and accommodation. We are so glad we found this gem. The staff have the knack of making ordinary people feel special in the thoughtful ways they offer help and service. It is evident that the staff training is of a very high standard and staff all seem really happy and proud of their hotel. Rightly so. The rooms are comfortable. We have been in several different rooms and all have been very satisfactory regarding space and bed comfort. The Greenhouse restaurant offers a wide selection and the meals are above usual hotel standard. Breakfasts are plentiful and tasty with locally sourced produce.

Beautiful location and lively hotel. Some of the decor is a bit dated but fine. Really clean. Staff couldn't do enough for you. Leisure facilities were good but not brilliant. Great place for a function or wedding.

Our stay at the Castle Green hotel was outstanding. We was staying at the Castle Green Hotel for a wedding which happened in the hotel. The staff who was with us all night were amazing. Staff were very polite and helpful all through out visit. Rooms were spotless (Credit to the cleaners) Comfortable beds. Breakfast was delicious (lots of choice.) Overall a pleasant stay, we will be returning.

Lovely hotel. Staff are very friendly professional and helpful. Rooms clean and spacious. Housekeeping of the room superb. Food in the hotel is top class. Nice pool, no jacuzzi which is s shame, however gym staff brilliant and friendly. Would stay at this hotel again. Book direct with the hotel for best rates.

    « disappointing service »

Common areas such as restaurant and bar nice but the room itself was very dated (but clean). On arrival I was told it was only booked as a single occupancy so it would be more than I expected, plus I needed to add another breakfast. Not the hotels fault apparently, but a common problem using well known booking site. No apologies just that's how it is! The next morning we didn't receive the paper requested and only one of us had breakfast. Not possible to refund breakfast which is probably fair but no apology for not getting the paper, just stated it hadn't been charged. Final straw the taxi we ordered via reception didn't arrive! Wouldn't recommend..

    « Great hotel »

Stayed at this hotel to visit the lake district and didn't want to stay in the touristy areas. Very nice clean comfortable hotel on the outskirts of kendal but in easy reach of the lakes. Fantastic breakfast but the real suprise was the pub in the grounds serving local ales and good food. Recommend this hotel.

Stayed here for an overnight. Room had been recently modified and though a little on the small side was very beautiful. Excellent shower in the bathroom. Breakfast was very very good indeed and the hotel was quiet during the night. Slept very well on comfortable bed. Would definitely return.

They made my weekend for me and my family so very special. Food in the Alexander pub was excellent even for the fussy eaters. Rooms were ready early and check out 11-12 which is ample to have breakfast and pack.

    « Overpriced, average hotel »

We chose this hotel as it was walking distance to Kendal (a good 25 minute walk but perfectly doable). That is the only real positive I can think of to say about the hotel. If the hotel was budget price then I may have been more forgiving but unfortunately the £130 a night we paid was too high for what you actually get (no breakfast included either). We were given a very tiny room that was situated 2 rooms away from reception. I knew I should have asked to be moved but I thought that I would buy earplugs just in case and give it a chance. Let's just say that the earplugs only managed to drown out a small amount of the noise from the corridor and reception area. The doors have nothing sound proof about them. I had asked for an upper story room in my booking.com booking but this was clearly ignored. When we arrived in the room I found dirty cups on our tea/coffee tray. We just washed them ourselves as the housekeeping had restocked the tea and coffee but I wasn't very pleased. I wanted to mention it to reception but me and my husband agreed that it wasn't really worth the hassle. I wanted to use the spa but unfortunately it had been fully booked 48 hours in advance which was disappointing. Not the hotel's fault but guests should keep this in mind. Maybe I had too high hopes for this hotel. It would be fine for one night (away from the main reception!) but as a nice lakes getaway it doesn't cut the mustard.

    « Lovely stay again! »

Second stay here this year and not dissapointed. My favourite thing is Alexanders restaurant on site. The food and service are second to none. The rooms are nice and bed comfortable. The breakfast lovely in the restaurant with great views across the green at the front of the hotel

    « Wedding »

Stayed here for one night after we attended a wedding reception at the hotel. Everything was very good, the wedding do was excellent, the staff attentive and the package that the couple chose for their guests was one of the best we have seen at a wedding. Canapes and drinks were flowing, the wedding breakfast plentiful. The room we had was small but very clean, modern and with everything you could want. Free water in the room plus tea and coffee facilities. Breakfast was very nice, full english buffet that was cooked fresh in front of you. Check in and check out was pleasant, would recommend.

I would recommend the breakfast to anyone , full English or cereal's were all there .

    « Don't expect dinner »

Lovely hotel, we stayed 5 days, but could only manage a meal in the restaurant once. The hotel is geared up for functions of which there were two whilst we stayed. We tried to book the restaurant 24 hours ahead but it was fully booked.

    « Weekend break »

We had previously stayed at this hotel some years ago for a family wedding, it was good then and is now even better. The rooms are tastefully furnished, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, always smiling and always greeting guests with a friendly word and smile. The location is beautiful, our room overlooked the gorgeous gardens and we even had a small furnished balcony. The restaurant was also lovely and the food was excellent. This also overlooks the gardens if you're lucky enough to get a window table. (We were).

    « Leisure Club Bonus »

We stayed here as part of a stopover during a week of touring. We selected the location as it was walking distance into Kendal. Part of the Best Western group we were looking for hotel of a decent standard and reasonably priced. We achieved this and more with this hotel. The rooms were spotlessly clean and comfortable, with coffee making facilities etc, and we had the added benefit of access to a leisure club with a very pleasant swimming pool and steam room to enjoy. Such amenities are rare within this price range. We did not eat here but chose to walk into Kendal and find a restaurant there but the hotel restaurant looked inviting and there is a separate eaterie and bar adjoining but still part of the hotel. This looked as though it was well attended by locals ( always a good sign I think!) For a mid price ranged hotel this is a bargain with the added benefit of a leisure club and friendly helpful staff.

« warm and generous welcome at the Castle Green »

We have not stayed here for some years but what a pleasant surprise from the welcome, the room, the gym, swimming pool and finally the most excellent Alexander's restaurant where we initially were served local 'Swan Blonde' beer by the most knowledgeable barman Chris Winfield ( encyclopaedic re local Cumbrian ales) and then had an excellent meal overseen by the assistant manager Chris Mealor...when a bit unsure re what to eat Mr Mealor even brought us a tiny sample of a course on the menu to aid mind making-up...these are staff to be proud of...well done the Castle Green Hotel!

    « well worth a visit »

the green house restaurant is well worth a visit. we had afternoon tea on one day and and evening meal on the next. the service was attentive and friendly. The food wonderful. As wheelchair user i could not stay at the hotel because their disabled rooms do not have a wet room shower. Access to the whole site is difficult because it is set on a hill. However every effort has been made to accommodate disabled visitors. Disabled parking is strictly monitored so be sure to display your badge

    « Delicious Afternoon Tea »

Tasty sandwiches, mini wrap, warm savoury muffin, hot scone and interesting selection of delicious cakes. Good list of teas to choose from. Great views from the restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for the waiter, who was very attentive without being intrusive. I defy anyone to eat it all!

« Best Western Castle Green Hotel, »

Stayed for 2 nights to celebrate 31st wedding anniversary and a wedding. Pleasant hotel, great staff, good food. Marred by a small swimming pool and lack of a sauna. WRT VFM maybe a little pricey based on the facilities, but the surroundings and locality of Kendal town made it worth it.

« Nice for an overnight »

Stayed with work overnight. Car park a little confusing as there are 3, ended up in the middle one which was a slight pain as had to carry case up a few steps. Welcome was friendly and staff were helpful. First impressions were good, large room, neutral colours, large bed. Swimming pool nice (slightly marred by the ladies who used it to sit at the end nattering for over an hour whilst the rest of us did lengths - it wasn't big enough for both) and the steam room very comfortable. Reason for 3 stars - very creaky could hear everyone walking around and had a rubbish nights sleep. The breakfast toast was burnt and the shower wasn't great and the water was only just hot. Need to watch the windows as not sure how much privacy there is.

    « lazy getaway »

We had a really relaxing stay at this hotel: the grounds were fabulous and the staff were all very welcoming, from the reception to the dining staff. Nothing was too much trouble. My partner was more than happy with the delicacies on the taster menu. The food was lovely. I would've preferred a room with a view because the gardens were beautifully maintained, however; seeing as though we booked this at the last minute, it was understandable that this would be a big 'ask'. On the basis of our experience, we have booked to stay here for New Year. Looking forward to another relaxing stay. Would be great if we had a room with a view!

    4
« Great views at the gateway to the Lakes »

The Castle Green is set in lovely grounds, and although a large hotel the public rooms are comfortable and are not 'institutional'. The bedrooms are good-sized with with a firm mattress on the bed (a real plus for me) and the bathrooms are modern with excellent bath/showers. There are options for eating in either the restaurant or in Alexanders pub in the grounds. We choose the pub which has a good range of draft beers and generous sized main courses. Breakfast choices in the main restaurant are excellent. Finally we were really well looked after by the very friendly and helpful staff. One of the pluses for booking the Castle Green is that because it's not in the National Park you do not have to book two nights which is often the case in the Lakes. Would definitely stay again!

« Not the place if you want peace and quiet »

We booked for a relaxing country break, and we're looking for a country hotel with leisure facilities, akin to Slaley Hall. This isn't that. The setting is impressive, overlooking Kendal, and is well signposted. Just as well, as the website hides the postcode so well I needed to retrieve my booking confirmation email to find it. We were in room 123, over looking the gardens. Also on the noisiest corridor in Christendom. The room is tiny and so poorly soundproofed that every conversation passing by can be heard, not to mention the hairdryer running in the next door room. We booked directly, and there were mentions of perks of doing this on the email and door key, but I'm yet to be advised of these on check-in. Breakfast was included in our rate, service was excellent and quality was good. We paid £168 for one night's bed and breakfast and I feel this was too high for the quality and size of the room and the service we received. We are yet to use the leisure facilities, as there were no robes in the room and (just like the 'direct booking perks') the receptionist staff made no mention of how we could access these facilities on check-in. Disappointingly expensive stay.

    « Fantastic wedding celebration »

I knew from the moment I walked into the Castle Green over a year ago without an appointment and just hoping for a quick show around the hotel that this was the place I had to get married. Nicola was amazing, considering I had no appointment she spent over an hour going through all the wedding packages and showing me round the hotel - the kind of customer service you want on your special day. Over the next year the wedding team were amazing, answering my constant emails, queries and changes I wanted to make with no hassle. The day itself (2nd September) ran perfectly with Christine hosting. The weather stayed lovely for us and we managed to get married outside in the gazebo which was just perfect. We made full use of the beautiful gardens for our wedding photos. The food was amazing, everyone commented on how beautiful it was and how full they were! Bar staff were wonderful, everyone rallied round to make sure I could just relax and enjoy my day and the guests had a wonderful time. Lovely surprise of an upgrade to the executive suite and a bottle of Prosecco on ice and a box of chocolates on our return to the room - little touches that make such a huge difference. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a wedding or just a night's stay, you cannot fault any of the staff here, everyone always has a smile on their face and are genuinely happy to help. Thank you for our special day :)

« Great service- small portions »

Overall the service was excellent! The waiters made sure our food was ordered quickly and efficiently. The food came relatively quick the only issue I would say is the portions of the food were relatively low to the amount paid but overall great job !

    « Another great stay. »

This place is excellent. We have been countless times and always enjoy our stay. We take advantage of a fabulous offer of dinner, bed and breakfast for £110 per couple. I hesitate to say that as I do not want it to become so popular that we can't make a reservation!! We enjoyed fabulous weather sitting in the garden and a lovely meal in the evening. Service was a little slower than usual on this occasion. There seemed to be new staff working amongst the "regulars." A little more experience and training and I'm sure they will become as adept as their mentors. (Brushing crumbs off the breakfast table with his hands is an example of the tweaks the young waiter needs to improve his service.) However, the friendliness of everyone, the good value for money, beautiful surroundings and ease of access for us means that this remains one of our favourite hotels. Thank you Castle Green. See you next time!

    « Our fantastic wedding »

We married here on August 16th 2016. I stayed in 139, prior to our wedding. The ceremony was conducted in the Gazebo. We had an outstanding day. The sun shone down on us as we said our vows. Then we had bucks fizz. The wedding breakfast was delicious. We opted for hand-tossed prawn salad, main of chicken, mash and roast potatoes, parsnips and buttered veg. Dessert was sticky toffee and ice cream. We had coffee/ tea and chocolates. Then the wedding cake. We regularly visit Castle Green and the food was brilliant as always. The new patio furniture was fun to sit on and soak up the rays. We held the wedding breakfast in the Kendal suite that allows a more private wedding area outdoors. The flowers were beautiful and were included in the package. Also included was: - Music Seat covers and sashes Food Reception drinks Room and gazebo hire Executive suite room. Chair covers in gazebo Christine hosted our wedding. Our guests had a lovely day. Thank you, Mr and Mrs R Dean

« A First class hotel... Very competitively priced »

A lovely hotel set above Kendal in beautiful grounds...Staff were friendly, helpful and quick to respond to requests. Breakfast choice was great and whilst I didn't have the opportunity to use the Pool or Gym facilities this time around, they were excellent according to other guests. I would certainly return for a family weekend.

Stayed for 2 nights for a family wedding. Very friendly and efficient staff, clean rooms, perhaps a little small but OK. Pleasant grounds and very well situated for Kendal and the Lakes. Breakfast good but only had one bar meal and this was reasonably priced. Didn't use the leisure facilities. Overall impression is that this hotel is welcoming and deserves its 4 stars.

We organised my 70th Birthday party at the hotel. My family of 13 ranged from myself 70 to our granddaughter 9 months. The staff organised our dinner party in full view of the kitchen in the main restaurant which was excellent this enabled the children to have an interest whilst the dinner were served. The staff were excellent from the manager to the ladies doing the cleaning of the rooms leaving me a little gift for my birthday. Wonderful food wonderful service and very good amenities.Thank you all.

« Little gem in Kendall »

We arrived by car and the hotel was easy to spot. There was plenty of parking, though there are are steps to get to the reception from the main parking area(for disabled/senior access, drive them all the way up to main entrance). The view from the bar is outstanding, over looking a lovely green meadow. The rooms were quite comfortable. It was very hot when we arrived but had table fans provided in our rooms. The best part was breakfast, which I would rate as outstanding! We did have some issues with the service as my custom order took 45 mins to arrive and they were very busy. But the staff was helpful and apologetic. It is accessible to all the touristy areas around. there is a small walk uphill from the hotel which we enjoyed doing after our breakfast. Overall a very nice experience and worth the money spent.

« A good place to stay and good staff »

Just back from an overnight stop to attend a wedding reception. Complicated arrival as with we had a little family emergency so we had to at first cancel, then a day later realised we could attend so contacted the hotel to rebook. Very helpful and sorted us out and kept the same rate, much appreciated. A good night was had by all, bar staff excellent and a good hearty breakfast to set us on our way today. Well done to all staff, would recommend the place and I know our friends who were married there had a great day too

We stayed for one night only(wish it could've been more). Very impressed with the standard of the room. Called Reception for an ironing board and this was brought in less than 5 minutes.Went and had a drink at Alexander's next door on a beautiful sunny day with amazing views. The breakfast next day was exceptional. Very kind waiter insisted we wait 2 minutes so he could prepare a table with a view of the beautiful gardens. Good quality breakfast with a good variety of choice. Would certainly recommend this hotel to family & friends.

« Parting is such sweet sorrow. »

Another family gathering,20 in all, for a 50th. First night Alexander's for dinner, second night The Greenhouse.Having stayed in many hotels this hotel is up there with the very best in terms of service, comfort, food and sheer friendliness. The standard of food in both restaurants was first class.Perhaps a special mention for the breakfast chef and staff making sure everything worked well at a very busy time with food of a high quality ( no skimping). We were looked after by the same head- waiter/manager at both dinners whose attention to detail could not be faulted.Wine list spot on and not over the top (they even had Guinness on tap at the pub ( see previous review). The absolute gem however was Ben our overall manager. Nothing was too much trouble with a lovely sense of humour ( which he needed with us). All 20 aged from 2 to 70 something were effusive in their praise of the reception staff and their warm efficiency right through to the Spa team

    « Great wedding venue »

I recently stayed at the Castle Green Hotel while attending a wedding and it proved to be a perfect venue for such an event - even the sun came out as photos were being taken! It was a Humanist ceremony which took place in a suitably decorated suite, while the meal and evening reception/disco etc took place in two other separate suites within the hotel. Anyone thinking of holding a wedding here should also be aware that the hotel is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens which make a superb backdrop for wedding photos. My wife and I stayed for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. There is a very nice dining room where we ate on the first evening and were impressed by the range of choices available on the menu. We dined with 2 other couples and we were all impressed by the quality of the food albeit that the service was a bit on the slow side! The hotel has a well-equipped gym and a good sized swimming pool; we used the latter but found the water to be overly chlorinated - use goggles if you have them! Overall we were very impressed by the hotel and consider it offers good value for money; it is also an ideal base for exploring the Lake District.

    « A great spot »

This is a wonderful hotel, spotlessly clean, friendly staff in a great location 20 minute walk from the centre of Kendal. The number of staff, both waiting staff and cleaning staff, ensure the smooth running of the hotel. Tables at breakfast are cleared immediately by an extremely efficient group - at no time did we have to wait for a table, even when the hotel was fully booked. I would highly recommend this hotel - we'll be back!

    « Lovely experience »

On our arrival we were dismayed to be faced with a long flight of steps up to reception, this was a big problem for my husband. A very helpful guest carried my case up the steps and directed us to drive further round in order to avoid the steps...a life saver. This was a very good hotel with friendly and very helpful staff, excellent restaurant and very comfortable and accessible rooms.

« Excellent stay in a lovely hotel »

This was our second visit to the Castle Green Hotel. The first was several years ago and we enjoyed it then. It has been refurbished since and is really lovely, stylish decor and well appointed rooms. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We had lunch in Alexanders, only a sandwich but is was very tasty and had a lovely view from our table in the window. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and had a gorgeous meal. The lamb was the nicest I have had, pink, tender and really delicious and service was excellent. A lovely hot breakfast set us up for the day, although we were sorry to leave. Couldn't fault it, we will return.

    « Nice hotel »

I stayed here with my husband and a large group of fellow bike riders, the room was lovely very comfortable bed and plump pillows, the staff were very nice and helpful, the breakfast was lovely but I have to be honest..I ordered a vegetable lasagna for my evening meal and I have definitely had better I think It was overly microwaved the starter was greasy my husband also says he wasn't impressed with the food. But other than that a pleasant stay.

« Fur coat and no.... »

ok I'll start with the good bits, won't take long. The view. Lovely. Similar to the view you can get by walking out of many a Lakeland hotel round Kendal, but yes, it is nice. So,well done you for finding a nice hill to put your hotel on. Right, now that's out of the way. Why did I drop multiple hundreds of pounds (half way to a grand) on two 'Prxxxer xxn' quality rooms, out of town, rendering me at your disposal to empty the rest of my wallet on your mediocre fayre? 7 POUNDS for a glass of Rioja out of a bottle of 4 quid wine from Tesco? Food.. yes, its available. Yes, its right out of the fryers, you know, the ones they have in places like Brxxxrs Fxxre. Righto.. Breakfast. Did ANYONE actually check to see how many people were staying at the hotel, you know, to give you a rough idea of how many people might show up for over cooked bacon and some brown drink, still not sure what it was, but it wasn't anything resembling coffee. Unless of course.. you have aspirations of the longest breakfast delay in history two mornings in a row. So, in summary, sure. Stay here... its umm, got a nice view. Or save a fortune, stay somewhere else for less and spend less when there on better quality meals and drinks. The Lakes is a wonderful place... I love it, millions love it. Don't ruin it by staying in this clip joint.

    « Dirty weekend »

Myself and my partner stayed for a weekend and found the hotel to be extremely clean and tidy and the staff to be pleasant and helpful. « General guide »

Stayed here earlier this week Nice hotel although it can be a bit busy so the amenities do get maxed That said nice restaurant and bar and nice staff. Average rooms, but ours had a design fault with the ensuite where the loo was too close to the shower and you couldn't sit down without hitting the side of the shower . Also it was disappointing that the receptionist had no thought about putting a young family with a babe next to an older couple where the room also had an adjoining door making the noise a problem especially when the baby started crying before 6 in the morning!!! Surely it must be possible with the CRM systems available today to better manage such things?

    « A pleasant place »

A hotel set in a lovely setting where you sit back and relax. The room is not a bad size but the ensuite is a bit cramped. The dining room was a pleasant setting although the food left a lot to be desired. The fish was not what we expected and the fruit salad was different for everybody. Breakfast was the usual choice.

« Outstanding restaurant, remarkable food »

On arrival the welcome was very warm and the restaurant was highlighted. Despite reading the menu and feeling confident we would enjoy a great meal experience the food and service far surpassed our expectations. We ate on two nights and both meals, beverages and service were stunning. On speaking to Chef Justin it was even more pleasing to hear how his team are sourced from local colleges are front of house team are young local employees. A tune gem and the hotel chain are very fortunate to have such talent and expertise at this establishment. Well done to the full F&B team.

« Pit Stop on way to Kendal Calling »

This hotel is situated in a beautiful area in Kendal with glorious grounds. Checking in and out was very smooth and the reception staff helpful, friendly and informative. Check out was by 11.00am. We dined in the restaurant sampling the taster menu and the accompanying wine- which was possibly one of the nicest meals iv had in a chain hotel. The waiting staff were excellent and very informative regarding the food and wine. We later chilled with cocktails in the bar area. The room was comfy and equipped with all you need. Room was also clean with very comfy bed. The breakfast was also plentiful and although very busy, staff remained courteous and accommodating throughout. I would highly recommend staying here to anyone and to make use of the fitness suite and Spa facilities. My only gripe was lack of wi-fi, it was very hit and miss -but I had a lack of phone signal in general. Also quite a trek from car park- wedding on so parking was sparse.

Recently had our wedding here! Stayed the night before and the men had a meal in Alexander's pub and woman in the restaurant, both was enjoyed by all the guest and value for Kent could not fault it at all! The wedding day, the staff were all amazing, especially Jenny and Tom who were both excellent wedding host! The food which was eaten was received great by all guest, mainly the beef which was the best most people have eaten! The waiting on and bar staff was also very friendly and made everyone feel welcome! I will say that all the guest which attended our wedding enjoyed the day and the lovely surroundings. Me and my new wife will most defiantly be returning to the castle green, I would like to say this is our favourite hotel in the area! Well done castle green team!

    « Excellent Customer service »

Just returned from a short stay at the Castle Green Hotel, which hosted my sons wedding We really enjoyed our stay here - Castle green is situated just outside Kendal on a hillside. The positives just went on & on - spotlessly clean, excellent food, & excellent customer service to mention a few. A taxi journey into Kendal is only £6.00, but to be quite honest, a meal in the on site restaurant (Alexanders) was the best bet - weren't too impressed with the eateries in town must admit. We both look forward to returning soon!! ps, Try the Stornaway Black Pudding at the breakfast buffet, absolutely amazing - thanks Chef!!

    « Return visit »

Stayed at Castle Green for 2 nights last week after last staying there 11 years ago. It was during the very hot weather and we had booked a balcony room overlooking the gardens which enabled us to sit out and enjoy the weather. The room, whilst small was clean and comfortable, the shower room was clean but a bit on the cosy side. Food in Alexander's was very good but we were a little disappointed with the cooked breakfast which is now a hot buffet, whilst the food was tasty, on both mornings it was lukewarm however there was a big choice of other foods available and this would not put us off staying again. The staff are very helpful and friendly and a great asset to the hotel. All in all an enjoyable stay

    « A pleasant stay »

This is exactly what you would expect from a country side hotel. The furnishing was not modern, but comfortable and clean. The staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The bed was comfortable (although a bit too soft for my liking) and the wifi was not good. The breakfast however was fantastic. A great variety of both hot and cold food and tasted very fresh. There is a pub next door which serves affordable and good pub food (steak/fish and chips) with a little bar inside. Location is not too convenient without a car. About 30 minute walk to the town centre.

    « Family Celebration »

Spent two nights in Castle Green Hotel. Beautiful settings and good views of the spectacular scenery. Ideal location for touring the southern lakes. Staff friendly and helpful on all occasions. In relation to the rooms it sadly did not live up to its' 4 star rating. We had paid for 2 rooms, neither had air con, which left the rooms unbearably hot. A fan was provided on request. No ironing facilities in one room. Neither room had any view and one looked onto a flat roof full of large ventilation/heating pipes. Complementary bottled water was provided in rooms on arrival but was not replenished on second day. Site is on hillside with facilities on different levels. Although there is a lift within the main complex, access to the on site pub (Alexanders) is difficult for the disabled.

Clean comfy rooms, friendly helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent meal in the Greenhouse restaurant. Baby toiletries in the room with our 5 month old granddaughter - excellent thought. Felt the staff couldn't do enough for us. Highly recommend and will stay again.

« Cricket watching in Kendal »

Spent a warm (very hot) few days watching cricket at Netherfield CC and staying at Castle Green. Good breakfasts and lounge bar meal. Bedroom quite cosy and could have been a little cleaner, small piece of broken plastic found on floor. Overall a good hotel and a pleasant stay.

    « Relaxing but expensive »

Having spent 2 (quite noisy) nights in a newly refurbished room overlooking the gardens, albeit lovely views, I think the hotel is quite expensive for the experience it offers. I didn't use the pool & gym area, pool times for kids very limited. We ate both nights at Alexander's, fish & chips were excellent, sea bass & steak not so. Staff are certainly very friendly, more so than other hotels I've visited. Strangely, the hairdryer in my room didn't work either. Lots of noise from corridor in late evening, doors slamming and the light from the corridor was quite bright under the door. Early morning, doors being knocked on, doors slamming again. Beds very comfortable though. No fridge, so complimentary water was warm, unappealing in the current heat! Very busy hotel with lots of repeat guests, so they must enjoy it overall, but I wouldn't stay again for the price.

    « family holiday »

meal in the bar was good. check in was okay. room was at the back, no view . I had phone and ask for rooms to have view.strange there was only 2 down lights in the bedroom, We had 2 rooms booked 1 of the rooms had no iron or ironing board, hairdryer did not work, in one the rooms the maid had left the window open when we where out. no bath mats in bath, book says you can ask for one if you want , people do not want to spent time asking for items that are not in the rooms. breakfast was okay, table to close together, there was 4 teabags in teapot for four people tea was like tar, next day we ask for 2 teabags to be in the teapot, we felt this was enough. staff at breakfast where more friendly to people who had stayed there before, everyone should be treated the same.

A one-night stay on luxury is just what I needed and my fabulous BF took me here. Busy hotel with 2 big events going on added to the buzz of the place, food excellent and the best bed in the quietest part of the hotel. Views to die for. Definitely recommended-hope to return

    « business trip »

very nice hotel in a very nice location. Well presented rooms, staff were very friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was very good, although on the second morning of our stay there must have been a meeting or conference because a bus load of 'business' people swarmed in and made the room very noisy. Didn't get a chance to try gym or sports facilities. Never ate in the restaurant although I did notice it seemed fairly pricey in comparison with similar hotels.

    « Arrived miffed - Left miffed. »

Here is an account of my experience - take from it what you wish! We were travelling down from north Scotland to Devon to visit friends and decided to break the journey overnight at Kendal. We booked a family room bed -and- breakfast for £140 which I thought was steep (because we would normally pay that for dinner-bed-and-breakfast) However, we dug our hands in our pockets because the hotel was in the ideal location for our overnight journey stop and had an indoor spa/swimming pool complex to relax after our journey and entertain the kids both on the evening of our arrival and the morning before we headed onwards.. The day we drove down to Kendal, we had planned to stop off for a spot of lunch to break the five hour drive - but underway my wife checked the Hotel website for directions. To our immense vexation she read in the small print that kids were only allowed in the swimming pool during the afternoons between 2 and 4pm. We therefore decided to forego lunch and put our foot down to get to the hotel for 3pm - thus spoiling our leisurely drive south. We hungrily turned off the M6 at 3pm only to find the road to Kendal was a bottle neck due to resurfacing work. (not the hotel's fault, I know) When I finally trailed into the hotel, both children and daddy most miffed.I expressed my disappointment with the pool opening hours - for children - only to be told that it was clear on the hotel's website/ it has always been thus/ it is just the way of things. This totally misses the point. For anyone arriving in the afternoons (check in time is after 3pm) this deprives any family of enjoying the facilities. For any family holidaying at the hotel, going out for the day and wishing a swim before dinner, this is also not an option. To further rub salt into our wounds, the pool was only accessible to families in the morning between 10 and 12 am. Thus, once again, we were deprived of the opportunity to use the facilities for which we had paid. Ironically, when I was there, I went to have a look at the pool which my family wasn't able to use. To my disbelief, part of the pool was roped for a local child to get private swimming lessons and an elderly gentleman at the health centre reception was cancelling his membership and after sixteen years because family swimming time was about to be adjusted to 2.30-4.30pm ; and moaning to anyone who would listen. The reason - he didn't believe children should be allowed in the pool at all! Oh yes, the hotel dining room prices were unrealistic for your average man in the street (£24 for a main) and the receptionist gave us the impression that children would be more welcome in the bar for a meal. But the bar meals were not cheap either! Another gripe; we were two floors up with no lift. On a positive note; the staff were all very friendly, the hotel very well decorated, and the sleep quality good.

This hotel is an excellent base to explore the lakes a short distance from Coniston and Windermere hotel staff friendly and can`t do enough, had a room which had recently been refurbished to a vey high standard the amenities at the hotel are excellent, would highly recommend this hotel I`ll I defiantly be revisiting.

    « Fab Stay »

We booked this hotel but after booking when I looked on trip advisor I noticed some of the reviews were mixed. Well after staying here for four nights, I don't know how anyone can give this hotel a bad review. I had asked for a refurbished room and garden view if possible when booking. The hotel accommodated this for us. The room was lovely and clean. The breakfast in the hotel was gorgeous. Literally they had thought of anything you could possible want to eat. We ate twice at the pub on site called Alexander's and that was the same, lovely fresh homemade food. We used the leisure facilities everyday which are free to hotel guests. This was great as well. Every staff member was friendly, helpful. Overall great stay and would definitely be back. Please don't listen to the bad reviews because they must have been stopping at a different hotel to me as I couldn't fault it at all.

    « Lovely, fab grounds »

Visited on a business trip and was really impressed. Taxi from centre of Kendal to the hotel was £5 (5 minute journey). Hotel is situated in lovely grounds, and has a relaxing vibe - hotel is spotless, decor was lovely and modern inside the public areas, bedrooms were spotless but more traditional decor. Lively bar and breakfast excellent.......alacarte option at no extra cost (we chose finney haddock with poached eggs). Breakfast buffet was excellent, lots of choice. Will definitely return on a leisure visit.

First time in Kendal and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Castle Green Hotel, the room was lovely and had everything we needed. Breakfast was fab and had my favourite Stornaway blackpudding - compliments to the chef who was friendly and accommodating. Ordered poached eggs on toast which was Delicious! Check in was smooth and friendly and all staff were friendly and couldn't pass you without saying hello ?? Couldn't fault the hotel and hope to stay for longer next time.

    « Fantastic! »

We came to the Castle Green Hotel for a one night stay in July, and I couldn't fault anything! Every member of staff you walked past gave you such a warm welcome which was such a lovely thing to see! We were upgraded to a garden view with a balcony and the room was perfect! Even the smallest details such as the 'balcony essentials' which included blankets were lovely touches! The food from Alexanders (an onsite restaurant) and the breakfast was delicious! I would certainly return without hesitation!

    « Brilliant Hotel »

My husband and I stayed there last night for our 7 year Anniversary as we had stayed there 4 years ago and were very impressed then. We were not disappointed. All staff were friendly yet professional, clean and tidy room, lovely spa....but to top it all off was the restaurant. Oh my goodness, the quality of the food was amazing! I loved the fact that you could see the kitchen and the service was excellent. The evening meal was so delicious and they dealt brilliantly with my food intolerance. Breakfast was lovely too. I would come back here in a heart beat. Thank you Castle Green Hotel! :)

Perfect location. Very clean. The staff are SO friendly, always have a smile on their face and are extremely helpful. Ideal for all occasions. It is situated in a beautiful location which is also very handy to get to the lakes or just sightseeing. To be honest I could go on but all I can say is a BIG thank you for a wonderful experience.

    « A perfect stay »

Cannot fault this hotel. The gardens are beautiful and the views are spectacular. The hotel rooms are plush and well equipped and the be was like a marshmallow. Free bottle of water in addition to tea and coffee making facilities is a nice touch. Towels were thick and luxurious. There are great onsite facilities including a fitness centre and swimming pool, excellent restaurant and relaxed pub/bar called Alexander's. Breakfast had everything anyone could possibly want! I attended for a conference and as a venue it is second to none. There are a range of different sized conference rooms and we switched between several of them based around our activities. Delegates were welcomed with tea/coffee including a range of speciality teas, delicious pastries and fresh fruit (a nice healthy option!). The lunch was the most well organised buffet I have ever experienced and staff were on hand to offer any assistance. Gluten free was also provided for. I would wholeheartedly recommend the hotel for a conference, a weekend break or a romantic getaway. You won't be disappointed. I would just say to avoid room 224 as the room overlooks the ventilation system and is adjacent to the lift so was a little noisy. I asked to switch rooms and my request was accommodated without any fuss at all so my thanks must go to the staff for making my stay a really pleasant one.

    « terrible stay »

Spent one night and firstly arrived at mid day and there was no parking in the four available car parks due to a conference being on. Our room was 154 and had a brick wall for a view and the room smelt of mildew and damp. The main bar area is small and we couldnt sit down or use it as another retire do was in process. We went to the pub on site and found it to be really a overspill for eating when you cant use the main hotel due to conferences or weddings taking place.

« Would Be Excellent For Wedding Or Conference »

This hotel would be excellent for a conference or wedding. It was beautiful; the grounds were spectacular. I'm not rating it excellent because we didn't get a good night's sleep and we didn't like the food. The bed was a hard platform bed (no box springs) and the pillows were thin foam. We wanted a good night's sleep after driving from northern Scotland. Such a beautiful place was ruined for us. We ate in the bar and the food was expensive and not very good.

« Excellent wedding venue and services »

My friends just got married here and I was lucky enough to be invited to the night wedding party. The staff were really helpful and friendly the wedding Co ordinator worked her blooming socks off, she was always on her feet non stop. The hot buffet of sausage and bacon baps were really good especially with the choice of soft baps and chiabata rolls. The chips and all the different dips. The drinks were all reasonable priced with a pint of Fosters at £3:50 and Old mount Cider at £4:85 a bottle. The night Porter ordered me a Taxi to another hotel in Kendal without any problems at all, this been just gone Midnight. The wedding Co ordinator deserves the biggest praise as she just carried on working her socks off all night long, I know that the Castle Green Hotel had a wedding the day after But all the Staff are a pride to carry The CGH on their uniform. TOP MARKS FOR THE SERVICES

    « Friendly,helpful staff. Great room. »

We were greeted by such welcoming, friendly staff in reception and when entering the breakfast room. Our room was in the old part ( the black and white building.) it was roomy, comfortable with an amazing powerful shower. We ate in the Alexander bar. The food was very nice ( especially the sticky toffee pudding !) Staff could learn a thing from the hotel staff on being more welcoming! All in all a great visit! If in the area again, we would definitely stay again!

« Great view and facilities »

Overnight stay 27/28 june. Lovely position with nice grounds. We upgraded to a room with a balcony. The room was smaller than in other hotels of similar standard but this is to be expected in an older building and was more than compensated by the balcony and the view. There was only a shower room but it was sufficient for a double room. The service throughout the hotel was excellent . The bar meal was tasty and good value. The gym facilities were of good standard and the swimming pool was of good size and maintained at a comfortable temperature. We are expecting to be holidaying in the district next year and will be hoping to spend a longer time based in castle green.

Love this hotel, Very friendly, helpful staff which makes a huge difference to your stay. The room is nicely furnished with modern decor and always very clean and well maintained. Perfect location to the gateway of the Lake District. Compliments to the chef who cooked our delicious and beautifully presented 3 course meal on our first night. A wide variety for breakfast from full English to pastries and cereals and juices. Our number 1 choice for our stay in the lakes.

    « Wedding »

My daughter had her wedding here last year, the grounds of the hotel are immaculate and we where hoping to have the service outside in the gazebo but the day was dull and they where worried it may rain so we ended up having the service inside ( you do have to pay extra for the service to be conducted outside and you don't get a refund If it isn't). The hotel was very kind and let us use the bridal room for my daughter & her bridesmaids to get ready and which I did as well. The only think I didn't like which upset me was as we went down for the service my daughter her dad and the bridesmaids went into a room and I was told I wasn't needed then and told to go and sit down in the room where the service was to be held by the co ordination. My son is getting married next year at another venue and on speaking to my future daughter inlaws mother she was telling me that her co ordination said that the mother waits till all the guests have arrived and seated, the mother then waits Just before the bride goes into the room and then is led to her seat by one of the ushers which I thought was better than told to go and sit down. I felt really put out and upset.wedding Co ordinates take note. Anyway apart from that incident the service was lovely the wedding breakfast was lovely and the guest really enjoyed themselves. The rooms where immaculate clean and tidy. I know this sound like it was all about me but she is my only daughter and I wanted to treasure every moment of her wedding day which we took a lot of planning and she and her husband had a wonderful time, It was just that one thing about the wedding which saddened me.

    « Fab again »

My partner took me again as a surprise for a five night stay to this lovely hotel. This was our third visit and he had arranged for us to stay in the same room. A first floor room with balcony. As always we were well looked after by David the head receptionist and his team, Leona the breakfast supervisor and her team, and Penny, Arran and the restaurant staff for our wonderful evening meals and the great service which they all provide. It was my partners birthday on one of the days we were there and I had mentioned it to Leona at breakfast.. Before we had finished eating she had come out with a huge slice of cake with a candle and a card for him from the restaurant staff.. In the evening word had obviously spread as he was greeted by Arran who, wished him a happy birthday, and as our desserts were served by Penny she had put a huge indoor firework on my partners dessert and we all sang happy birthday. I can only thank the staff once again for a most enjoyable stay, it feels like a home from home as we always feel welcome from the moment we arrive. All the staff from the front desk, the cleaning team, to the restaurant staff and the wonderful chefs we thank you for such great service . Until the next time Castle Green, we look forward to it. « Superb afternoon tea »

I wanted to treat my parents to afternoon tea in the Kendal area, but as both my parents are now in their 90's, they can be quite vociferous in stating their likes and dislikes. When I pointed this out to the lady I spoke to on the telephone, she assured me that this would not be a problem and asked specifically what type of sandwich fillings would suit them. When we arrived we were shown straight to a beautiful table in the window and we were asked for our choices of teas or coffee. One of the chefs then appeared with the tiered plate displaying the various sandwiches and cakes and advised mum & dad that they had prepared them all to their preferences. They were absolutely over the moon as it made them feel very special. The sandwiches, scones and cakes were all fantastic and the service was superb. I have taken my parents to various places over the years for afternoon tea, but they were absolutely certain that the Castle Green was the best so far. Thanks again for being so helpful.

We stayed here for 3 nights the rooms were very expensive but were very well presented. Breakfast was amazing with a very wide selection, the quality of the evening meal was fantastic just very small portions but you get that with michelin star food. The service was great all round although some other hotel guests were quite grumpy where children were children were concerned, maybe an adult only lounge would solve that problem.

    « Leisurely and pleasant »

Had a lovely overnight stay with my mum. Nice room and fantastic bathroom with brilliant shower. Had complimentary slippers, bath robe and chocolates. Had an evening meal In the pub that's part of the hotel. It was expensive. We were served 3 different people. The 2 men never cracked a smile but the young girl was nice and friendly. We arrived at breakfast at around 9.30. There was lots of choice but the cooked breakfast buffet looked like it had been sat there for some time. Beautiful gardens and a woodland walk out the back which we didn't have time to investigate. We used the spa and had the most amazing facial and body massage followed by a swim and sauna. It was expensive but highly recommended as we both felt very relaxed afterwards.

    « Fabulous Wedding »

Booked Castle Green Hotel for my daughters wedding weekend of 24th June 2016, I have to say that from our first meeting with Amanda the wedding co-ordinator to the last drink (at 1am in the hotel bar) I cannot fault anything. Amanda and her team were absolutely professional from start to finish in the planning and execution of their duties on the day, even the weather changed from cloudy and showers to brilliant sunshine as we left the beautiful church on the Sizergh estate (don't think Amanda and her team fixed that) we arrived back at the hotel to drinks and canapes on the lawn in the very well maintained gardens afterwards into the function suite for the main event where everything went to plan and followed exactly the arrangements made a very long time ago. I cannot thank the hotel enough for making Rachel and Ian's wedding a day to treasure and certainly remember, well done to everyone who contributed to the day. My wife and I were allocated a bedroom on the first floor, this was immaculatey presented and very well furnished, the room was obviously a room suitable for the less abled, but had a bath with a very powerful shower over, which I did question as to how a less abled person would be able to use either the bath or shower. The room was spacious which was a bonus as my daughter and her bridesmaids used for their preparations. Prices at the hotel and adjoining Alexanders public house were reasonable and what you would expect from a quality hotel, twelve of us ate at Alexander's on the eve of the wedding and this again was a pleasurable experience and credit again to all the staff who helped with that evening. I would like to conclude by saying if you are thinking of booking or enquiring about a wedding or other function at this hotel, I can honestly say you will be looked after from start to finish. Well done to the hotel and all the staff, I hope the manager passes on this review to you all, you deserve it. Well done

« Stop off on a long trip »

We stayed at this hotel on our recent trip up to Scotland. The hotel is lovely and the staff really welcoming, the room was very small for the price, the bathroom was very small and the positioning of the facilities was really cramped and the room was tiny for the price paid. We chose a room with a balcony as it was advertised as having a garden and castle view, it did have a garden view but the castle was not visible at all. The balcony was not really big enough for two people to sit outside, standing was a struggle!. The breakfast was ok but nothing special there was the usual cooked offerings but the eggs had bits of shell in them, the continental selection was yoghurt and toast so not great. The winner was the dinner, it was amazing, the quality was really high and the meal was cooked perfectly. All in all I wouldn't go out of my way to stay here again but if I was passing I would, if just for the evening meal!

mandy booked this as a surprise treat for my 50th, its a beautiful hotel in spacious grounds, so its peaceful and quiet. Only a 5 minute drive into Kendal if you want to walk around the shops. we stayed in a classic double which was spotlessly clean with a large comfy double bed and a good sized bathroom. We used the pool on both afternoons as it was raining. we sat at the full height windows overlooking the grounds to enjoy an amazing breakfast, the staff were very attentive and would cook your breakfast to order. we ate in the adjoining bar for dinner which was reasonably priced with a great atmosphere. we would definitely be visiting again.

« Was probably great in the 90s »

We stayed here for 2 nights to relax before going on a longer holiday. The rooms are good and clean but there is no in-room entertainment, no air conditioning and windows that your grandma can break into. Breakfast is good and the pub food is good too. The bathroom had an annoying little speaker which echoed the TV even when the TV was muted. You can see the TV from the bathroom mirror but of course the image is mirrored. Also, bring a DVD player with you if you want some movies otherwise you're stuck with Film4 and 10 of Britain's finest Freeview channels including Channel 5 and BBC Radio 1. Room service tidied up well but it looks like they washed our cups in the bathroom sink and took one mugs for reasons unknown. The best feature is the treated bathroom mirror which leaves a healthy portion of the mirror free of fog when you shower. Parking is good... but if you're disabled without a wheelchair and someone to push you up I feel sorry for you.

    « A Caring Friendly Luxury Hotel »

My wife and I (both fairly ancient and I pretty disabled) spent a halcyon fortnight being spoiled by the caring, friendly staff who always found time to chat to us as well as look after our every need. Our room was an "access" room, and was spacious and comfortable, with every amenity we needed. I used a small buggy to get about the large hotel. The hotel is on the ourskirts of Kendal with plenty of parking for all visitors and sufficient blue badge parking at the entrance. There was easy road access to the Lake District. Food was excellent - well balanced and imaginative and restaurant service was efficient and thoughtful. Top levels of managemnt were always on hand to check with us that we were happy and had all we wanted. It is impossible to find anything detrimental to say about Castle Green!

    « a pastoral retreat »

This hotel offers every convenience to a visitor to the lake district: it is quiet and peaceful, yet it has a great fitness area and good access to the town of Kendal and more touristy towns nearby. Service is impeccable and the rooms are lovely. Our room faced the road, but it also overlooked the front gardens, which are very pretty. Overall, a beautiful place to stay!

    « Castle Green Hotel - June 2016 »

After having an amazing day at a family function last week, we just had to leave a five star review for the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal. It has been a few years since we were last at the hotel so didn't really know what to expect, we wanted to a function room for a christening to cater for up to 70 people, right from the start the staff at the Castle Green Hotel made us feel welcome and we knew we had made the right decision. We booked the downstairs function room which was both modern and spacious and easily fit 8 large tables plus a separate large table for the buffet as well as cake table, it was a beautiful day so our guests were also able to make use of the outside gardens which have a fantastic view of Kendal Castle and the surrounding area. Out of everything we really have to give credit to Janine, Christine and the staff all of which were so friendly and helpful and really made our day, Thank You all!!!

    « 1st class stay - highly recommend »

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at The Castle Green Hotel in Kendal and I can honestly say it was perfect from start to finish. We picked this hotel as it was so highly rated on trip advisor and we were not disappointed. The reception team were very efficient, professional and very friendly and made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived. The front of house manager introduced herself to us also and couldn't have been nicer. Our room was beautiful, the view was to die for and the cleanliness was superb. Our bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The hotel is located about 1 mile from the town centre so we took a walk into town and back which was very manageable and saves having to look for a car park in Kendal. Breakfast was superb to, so much choice and very fresh. My daughter is a fussy eater and even she was impressed. We ate out two nights as we were out late but had a snack in the lounge bar on the Friday evening which was beautiful, fresh and plentiful. Needless to say we will be returning and I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a 1st class stay in the Lakes, it truly was outstanding. Thank you for looking after us so well.

« Not quite as expected »

This is a bright modern hotel in a pretty location staffed by cheerful people. However: rooms at the back (we were in room 212) have a limited view, of outbuildings and trees above the skyline; our room was small, probably 20-25% smaller than average, with limited storage -- so pack light if you can; check the shower! -- ours had a broken temperature control, discovered only when one of us was under it; and check your deal -- we thought we had booked bed and breakfast but learned are reception that guests using booking dot com often make this mistake, so cost was 20% higher than anticipated. Not quite as expected, hence only 3 stars.

    « Lovely place »

We stayed on Tuesday 31st,in room 160,check in was very friendly & efficient, our room was very comfortable,I slept like a log in a very large bed, bathroom was pristine, and with modern fittings,we had b/fast which was in a beautiful restaurant with loads of natural daylight flooding in from huge windows, with a view to die for, staff were very friendly & well turned out in their uniforms & very efficient at table,we had a bar meal in lounge in evening which was very tasty, again service was sharp & efficient by well drilled staff,we used spa facilities which were also of a very high standard and left us feeling fresh and ready to take on the day,we have stayed in the Lake District many times over the years as we have family there,in all different kinds of accommodation,we have never stayed in Kendal before so we thought we would give it a go,more than pleased with this hotel,it just had a nice feel about the place, and all the staff working their that we met were super friendly, and that's what makes a stay anywhere one to remember, and the hotel itself was stunning,oh yes plenty of parking spaces that's a first for us staying in the lakes, money well spent, would gladly return to this property

    « Excellent »

We moved our regional meeting from Carlisle to Kendal last month to the Castle Green hotel and we were not disappointed. From the moment I arrived staff are very helpful polite and informed about the hotel, its facilities and the fact I was there to host a regional conference the following day. I checked into my bedroom (which is a little on the small side) but beautifully clean with reasonable facilities as expected in bedroom now a days. I went to the bar to have dinner and a glass of wine, The bar manager was suitably polite and very helpful the menu extensive and the food served very efficiently and presented nicely. Breakfast the following morning was a buffet style breakfast which again had plenty of choice for all tastes. Within route onto the conference area and run that was laid out for us of ample size and Dave the conference of facilities manager was extremely helpful and polite and got the equipment I needed for the day. Everything about the room was light and airy with plenty of space so I delegates felt comfortable. Tea, coffee and lunch were served at the appropriate time and I'll choice of food for lunch service was superb. In short we will definitely return to the Castle Green hotel for our future regional meetings. Well done to everybody for making us feel very welcome.

« Amazing hotel in a beautiful location »

Visited this hotel for the Easter bank holiday weekend. It was a lovely relaxing weekend. The room was spacious and very clean. They have great gym facilities, pool and sauna. The restaurant the green room was outstanding the quality of the food and the service. The views from the restaurant made it feel very special. Even the breakfast was to a high standard.

« Lovely hotel and good service, but don't forget about the small stuff. »

The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and and was our first stay with them. The staff are very friendly and helpful (although some tiny added touches were missed) and Chris in the restaurant was exceptional. The restaurant food was lovely and good value for money. The only downside for us was the cost of the room did not meet with our expectations of the room itself which looked out over the top of the swimming pool and at times was noisy especially travelling with an older person who slept in the afternoon.

    « Good for a short break »

Stayed for a much needed short break for two nights. Package was bed and breakfast. Hotel was fine. Standard stuff for a Best Western. Staff were lovely, nice views and nice garden. It's walking distance into Kendal. Our room was a walk from reception up and down a couple of flights of stairs, if you struggle with stairs then best to ask for a room close to reception. We didn't manage to use the gym and swimming pool facilities but they looked good. We ate in the restaurant one night which was excellent quality and extremely well presented. Breakfast was ok but I felt everything was out too long and I would have preferred sausages, bacon, black pudding, fried eggs etc to be fresher

« Excellent Hotel and Service »

I stayed at The Castle Green Hotel from Sunday 22nd May to Wednesday 25th May 2016. I traveled alone to meet up with a friend who is working locally. I enjoyed my stay enormously. I stayed in an Executive Room, which was spacious, clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. The customer care from the various staff was second to none. They were courteous, competent and helpful. My guest and I ate in the Green House restaurant where within reason you could order off menu. However, this proved not to be necessary as they catered well for my vegetarian needs both our meals were delicious and the service was very good. One evening, I ordered Room Service my meal arrived promptly and again was delicious. I used the Spa and had a relaxing hour-long Hot Lava Shell massage, which was excellent. I enjoyed swimming in the heated pool, which unlike some hotel pools was lovely and warm. The steam room was a unique meditative relaxing experience due to the wonderful music that added to my relaxation experience. The staff in the Gym and Spa were professional and extremely helpful. I had a mini one to one tutorial in the Gym with an excellent personal trainer, who patiently demonstrated and explained the purpose and workings of the various equipment. All this and I still managed to fit in leisurely walks, visit the tourist sites in Kendal and admire the beautiful landscape. I enjoyed shopping in the local town; many shops were recovering from the floods and were glad tourists had returned. The local people were extremely helpful and friendly Andrew and Roberts Antique store is definitely worth a look. This was my first visit to Kendal and I will certainly be back, one of the best hotel experiences I have had. Castle Green is unique in the fact that although it is a large hotel the whole staff team are dedicated to ensuring you have wonderful experience. This is truly a five star hotel.

« Good place to stay »

This hotel is ok. Despite the very good reviews i think it is ok, but not great. It was ok priced. Room was complete but small, i was in 221. Mine had a balcony, which is nice. It came at a surcharge. There is coffee / tea in the room. Bed was great. Breakfast as well, except for the coffee. Surroundings are beautiful.

    « Beautiful, Comfortable, Convenient »

This gem is so easy to find as you drive into town. The warm decor is so welcoming. It sits above the town with a scenic aspect. The rooms are beautiful and good sized with immaculate bathrooms. There is a pool....Yay!...Several nice looking restaurants, although we did not eat at any of them. There is easy access to town where we found great food and a direct route on to the Lake District. The staff was very helpful. There is no lift but just a few stairs to the upper floor. Parking was provided free of charge but there wasn't much close to the entry. Free WiFi was pretty good.

    « A very warm welcome »

The one thing that stands out with this hotel is how warm and friendly the staff are, they show a real passion for thier work and couldn't do more to make your stay a pleasant one. This time we stayed in newly refurbished rooms that overlooked the glorious gardens. The restaurant prides themselves on cooking with local produce. We and had a lovely meal although we asked if we'd need sides with our mains and were advised not, we were a little disappointed by the token amount of vegetables on our dishes. However the food was all perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. We look forward to staying here again.

« Best of the Best »

Staying at this hotel both for business and leisure is something that I and my wife look forward to with great anticipation. The hotel is set in great surroundings. The rooms are very comfortable and the staff are second to none. The food in the restaurant is to die for and the service is impeccable. I am always baffled when people check in and then go into Kendal for dinner. There is nowhere better to eat than in the Greenhouse restaurant.

« Meal only with family »

I am originally from Kendal and visited my family with my wife. We decided to eat at the Castle Green as this restaurant has good reviews. I was somewhat dissapointed overall due to it not meeting my expectation. Water leaked over our table from the air conditioning unit, we were served sorbet but no one bothered to bring spoons, and there does not seem to be enough attention to detail i.e. if you order steak you need a steak knife. Considering you pay for what you get, I think we overpaid. I and my family were looking forward to eating at Castle Green but left with a bitter taste in my mouth. Unfortunatly i will not be returning to Castle Green to eat.

    « Experience the passion! »

The one thing which distinguishes this hotel is the evident passion felt by its staff which translates into the warmest and most genuine welcome and a feeling that your enjoyment and comfort really do matter to them. This is in my experience of frequent international travel quite a rare quality and one which transcends lists of amenities, star ratings and all that jazz. The restaurant food is excellent and the breakfast is diverse and generous and both showcase local food and producers. The rooms are cosy, many refurbished and contemporary but in keeping with the building and its environs. The gardens are evidently the Hotel's pride and joy and the views are spectacular.

    « Lovely hotel »

I stayed here for training over the weekend. The rooms were spacious and some (not mine!) had great views as well as a balcony. My room (232) had a bath as well as a shower. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. The gardens and surrounding area are beautiful and very relaxing. Lots on offer for breakfast, loved the additional pancakes and waffles on offer. I would definitely stay here again.

« Comfortable hotel good views. »

I stayed here for just one night and had a meal in the bar area. The hotel is big surrounded by lovely gardens and grounds. The room was comfortable, with the usual amenities you would expect to find in a hotel of this size. This hotel has a spa and pool along with a gym for those who wish to work out whilst away. The bar restaurant was nicely decorated and had a pleasant feel to it, the food was good and not expensive. I did have trouble finding this hotel as it was listed as a best western and my sat Nav took me to a different location. There are no signs on the main road except for Alexanders which turned to be part of the hotel but wasn't clearly marked. Overall a pleasant stay.

    « Excellent Wedding Venue »

Couldn't have had a nicer venue for our sons wedding. Everything was perfect from start to finish. Beautiful rooms with stunning views. The staff were amazing. Would highly recommend a weekend stay as they have a pool and gym. Just heaven

« Nice location , good gym and spa facilities »

Stayed there for a overnight during business trip . Nice welcome and quick check in. Comfortable room but a little on the small side with view over the fire escape . Just a shower , no bath . A little expensive rate for quality of room. Aside of that I can not fault the rest . Would probably return but I would check the room choice ahead .

« Lovely hotel in a great setting »

I stayed for one night in this hotel previously months before en route to Scotland and had such a pleasant stay I re-booked on my trip to London. Great gardens, breakfasts abd staff service. The beds are great; not to hard ir to soft, you just melt into them. Hreat facilities and parking. A great stay in a beautiful part of the world.

« Nice hotel to explore the Lake District »

My wife and I made our way up from our overnight stay in Malham arriving a little early, however we only had a short wait in the bar before our room was ready. Our check in was easy and the reception staff could not have been more helpful. Our room we were told had been recently refurbished and was on the ground floor overlooking the gardens with Kendal and hills in the background. The room was clean and well presented with a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was self service with staff taking orders for tea or toast. I was offered gluten free sausages and bread which was a lovely surprise. Although we ate out each of our three nights there was a restaurant in the hotel or an associated pub (Alexanders) in the grounds. It is best to book if you are planning to eat in either as we were turned away from the pub on the Wednesday night. We were a bit disappointed as there appeared to be seating outside which we would happily have accepted but this was not offered. It worked out well in the end as found a great place about 10 minutes drive away called Romneys, and even though they were clearly very busy they made us feel welcome and we had a great meal there. However more about that in another review. Apart from the lady in Alexanders the staff were very attentive and would stop and chat in the bar to ask how our day had been and where we had been that day. All in all we had a pleasant stay at Castle Green and we both agreed we would be happy to come back

« Great location, Great Hotel »

We enjoyed a 3 day midweek break at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal. Fabulous view from this hillside location overlooking Kendal and the lake district fells, in well maintained attractive gardens. The service in all areas was excellent and staff very friendly and efficient. Choice of good food in the conservatory restaurant or the adjoining Alexander's Pub.

    « 10/10... Fantastic find!!! »

Hallelujah for our company travel provider finding this hotel... Fantastic all round. Very warm welcome from the front of house team upon arrival and ended up with a room at the back of the hotel... Although it looked onto an embankment it was perfect for the little time I was spending in the room. Bedroom was spotless and the bathroom had recently been updated to a high standard with a powerful shower and deep bath. Dinner and breakfast at the house were once again faultless and very well priced making it good value for money all round. Top feature for me was the gym and pool all once again recently upgraded and to a high standard with good gym equipment and plenty of space to do individual workouts. Definitely will be staying here again in a few weeks time whilst in the area for business.

    « Nice but pricy »

I stayed at this hotel mid week for a night. Check in was great no problems and got them to book a table for dinner for 3 of us. Room was fine apart from it being in the bottom floor near reception and across from a lift. Very noisy. Inconsiderate people who did not care how much noise they made or who it disturbed. Dinner was good. The price of their wine was extortionate. A small glass cost me £7.00 not amused. Breakfast was alright but I thought a little tasteless.

« lovely hotel, but the food ! »

stopped here, by way of a treat, on our journey south for a family wedding the hotel is fresh and the rooms of a high standard. The leisure suite is modern and clean, the hotel gardens are exceptional and in many ways the jewel in the crown of the whole complex. We decided to eat in the bar for a more relaxed atmosphere, big mistake, the meal must rate as the worst I have ever been presented with an any hotel. The starter, a mixed fish sharing platter, which arrived after a 40 minute wait, consisted of a variety of fish all coated in the same crumb making it hard to recognise what we were eating, the smoked salmon was more grey than pink. While we were waiting for the main my wife overheard the next table complaining to the waitress regarding their meal although the details of their problem could not be heard. My main came in wraps, described as pulled pork in lettuce wrap, not suitable for a coeliac but the menu description had not rung any alarm bells, inside was a disgusting glop of pulled pork mixed with a hickory sticky barbeque sauce, the chips had been made with bruise blackened potatoes; my wife had the same chips and an overly salty gammon steak. We decided not to continue to dessert or coffee. The waitress who was very good was obviously too embarrassed to ask if we had enjoyed our meal. The bill for food only £34.50 The web site states that for booking direct we would receive a dinner voucher, this never materialised.

    « Very nearly excellent »

From check in to check out the service was good. The staff are lovely. The grounds are wonderful and beautifully kept. The views from the room are also lovely. We had a really lovely dinner (we had the sea bass) and then a really good breakfast. It was all very well cooked and presented with very good portions. You could tell the chefs had talent and actually cared about the food they were serving. They also took food allergies seriously and still managed to serve great food. This would have been 5 stars except for the small dingy rooms. They are well equipped but dull and very little room to pass the end of the bed. The bathroom was also very small with only a tiny cramped shower.

« Great stay with minor shortcomings »

I was really impressed by this hotel, although there were some minor shortcomings. These however were sufficiently minor not to remove a star, but I'll come to these. We had an upgraded room, and we found it to be clean, comfortable and spacious. However, bearing in mind this is a 4 star hotel coupled with the upgraded room, I was surprised to find that there was no in-room safe, or a fridge. We also had dinner at the hotel. It was excellent in all respects. The food, the service and the general ambience was really great - and this contributed to the overall marking of 5 stars. A similar pattern followed at breakfast - a great choice of both the cooked, and the ?healthy' offerings. Apart from the aforementioned minor room shortcomings, the only other minor issue was the car parking arrangements in relation to the location of Reception. The limited car park immediately outside was full, therefore we had to offload our car in a designated area close to Reception then park our car at a lower level. The reverse was also true when loading back up again. The alternative was to lug our bags up an external stair case. I don't know how practical it would be to install a lift from the lower car park to Reception, but consideration should be given to this as we're not so young and fit as we once were! I could see though that the geography of the site (on a slope) made for difficulties in this regard. Overall, though, a great stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

    « Really Great Visit »

Stayed at this hotel before, mainly new year experience. This visit during spring was just a good, if not better. Our room was newly refurbished, and was without fault. Mirror in bathroom had special section so they the steam did not cover all of the glass, and you could still use it. Tea coffee facilities in room was of good quality and plenty of it. Restaurant service and menu very good. Staff all work as a team and make their guests very welcome. Management, and the castle green stall are one team, and they work well. Hope it won't be too long before we stay again.

    « Engagement »

It was very romantic weekend, full of surprises. The first of all, it was treat for the Valentines day, secondly I said Yes. The most interesting was the restaurant. I don't know how they did it but the dinner was delicious, maybe not the cheapest one but still worth any penny. The atmosphere at the pub was quite good. The room was ok, friendly staff Nice location

« First rate hotel with excellent facilities in a good location »

Everything about our one night stay in this hotel was perfect from the room to the food in both Alexander's (on site pub) and breakfast in the hotel restaurant. We also had the added treat of a live bank in the function room who were brilliant. As the weather was so sunny we did not make use of the pool and steam room however I am sure they would also have been of a high standard. The only issue we had which was in no way the fault of the hotel was an ignorant fellow guest in the next room who thought it was acceptable to have the radio playing at full blast at 6.30 on a Sunday morning. Some people really need to have a bit more respect and manners and it may be an idea for hotels to have some sort of policy to prevent such behaviour.

    3
« great until it came to sleeping »

Arriving at the hotel it felt like a dream, massive beautiful gardens and friendly staff. Huge, modern hotel with two restaurants and beautiful gardens to have a drink in the sun. We only ate at Alexander's and it was fantastic and the service was very quick. Check in was simple and everything got charged to our room to pay for when we left which was very handy. I was only disappointed in our room location at it was in a corner and the staff entrance was literally a cm away from our window and the door actually hit our window one morning. There was also a ladder to the roof I assume by that door which made us feel very unsafe when opening our window as it was be extremely simple for someone to come in as the Windows were very big. Lastly the bed itself was very hard, as were the pillows meaning I had an awful sleep, partly because of the heat of the room too as we could not open the windows. Over all our experience here was lovely, it was just bad place to put a room I feel.

    « Lovely hotel »

Stayed here as working in the area. Very clean and comfortable room. Staff very helpful. I ate in Alexanders the pub which is on the site but more like a restaurant. The food and service was amazing I couldn't fault it.

« One special night stay »

Had lunch in the bar on arrival, sandwiches and coffee, delicious.. The room was spacious, quiet, comfortable and well appointed. We had an evening meal n the pub which was very tasty. Breakfast in the hotel was first class.

« This hotel simply gets better every time »

This is the third time I have stayed at this hotel in five years, and it has moved from being simply good to frankly excellent. The rooms were formerly rather tired, but have now been refreshed; mine had had a brand new bathroom installed, with an excellent shower. The room was comfortable and warm, with plenty of space to spread out. However, the highlight was indubitably the food; the evening meal was certainly the best I have had in a hotel for many a year. I chose from the table d'hôte menu, and could not believe the subtlety and fine texture of all three courses. The taste of the locally-sourced raw materials was excellent, the service was discrete and the room was charming, with delightful views over Kendal. The breakfast was equally good, again featuring a range of local produce. I look forward to returning.

    « 40th birthday Party »

We recently celebrated my wifes 40th birthday at the Castle Green Hotel. We had the party in the function house and had about 75 guests. We had a full Cumbrian BBQ on the terrace which catered for everyone with a fantastic spread of meats, jacket potatoes and salads which were really well created. The event planners Janine and Amanda did an excellent job for us. They helped us with ideas and talked about what people had done in the past which had worked well. They were accessible in the run up to the event and made sure eveything went smoothly. On the day, from the moment we arrived in the hotel we were looked after like royalty. The room was fantastic and we were really surprised at how big it was and how generously it was supplied with everything you might need for you stay. There was also a bottle of Prosecco and a card left in our room which we thought was a really nice touch. It was as if everybody knew that it was our party in the hotel and made a real fuss of us. Everybody had a fantastic night at the party, the band (the Seals) were brilliant and the BBQ food was extremely well prepared. There was a good range of drinks at the bar and the staff were really friendly and helpful, collecting all the presents and storing them behind reception later to make sure they were safe. Breakfast in the morning was one of the nicest breakfasts I have had in a hotel (and I have stayed in hundreds of hotels). Everything was great quality, not mass produced and the service was attentive. All in all I would highly recommend the hotel as a venue for an event, the function rooms are great, the staff are superb and the food was excellent. A well done all round and a big thank you to everyone at the hotel for making our weekend one to remember.

    3
« small room by congregation point!! »

We stayed here for one night as we were attending a birthday party held at the venue. We were in room 127 which is directly opposite the lift! The room itself was clean but very small, you had to walk sideways to get to the other side of the bed also as you get to the end the dressing table sticks out! I now have a massive bruise on my thigh from walking into it! If you are on the large side you really would struggle to fit getting to the other side of the bed/room. The actual lift was not noisy but everyone waiting for the lift or getting out of it were, you could clearly hear every word everybody said. We were unable to get to sleep until gone 2.30 and woken again around 7am, When checking out the receptionist asked was everything ok? I told her the problem and she just said oh! sorry! Well, she needn't have bothered to ask if that was all she could say. I really don't think this justifies the £144 price we paid!!

« A little on the expensive side, but worth every penny »

Arrived at Castle Green Hotel and was immediately impressed with the cleanliness and attention to detail. The whole area was spotlessly clean, no litter, manicured gardens and well-maintained building. Upon checking in, we were greeted by a young lady who was incredibly helpful. Both my partner and I suffer with arthritis and on this occasion, I was using crutches to get around. The girl on reception immediately checked us in, moved us to a room with better access (and less stairs) and took our bags to the room for us, which was a nice touch. Overall, very friendly staff. The room itself was well decorated, looked fresh and clean and the bed was very comfortable. Complimentary bottled water was provided, which was a nice touch and the bathroom was spacious and spotlessly clean. And when I say clean, I mean you could literally see your reflection in the sink and toilet! Very high standard of cleaning. The view from the room was good, although there were a few heating pipes outside the window that took a little magic away from the otherwise perfect view... though thats forgiveable and understandable. We were attending a friends birthday party which was held in the main function room, which was a small wander across the grounds, but no problem. A great evening was had by all, with a huge queues at the bar, staff constantly doing the rounds collecting the empty glasses and overall a very impressive level of attention. Overall, our stay was extremely enjoyable, comfortable and we left knowing that we would most certainly visit again soon. It is situated in beautiful countryside too, which only goes to make the whole experience even more special. Would we recommend it? Absolutely. We paid just over £150 for the night, but you can see that sometimes, you really do get what you pay for and this was way above and beyond Travel-inn standard. The fact it has free wifi available throughout was just the icing on the cake for me.

    2
    « Clean and ordinary »

This hotel wasn't for me.. It had the feel and smell of a care home. Staff were very polite and provided a bottle of fizz and after dinner drinks to compensate for finding a used ear plug on the floor of our tiny room and the ordinary evening meal. Apart from the ear plug the room was very clean .. Just disappointingly small with bland decor. Evening meal was well cooked and tasty .. But just ordinary I got bored of eating the sea bass! Breakfast was well organised and with a lot of choice.. Sausages were over cooked and I ate something I think may have been Haggis.. But then again may not have been as there was not sign to tell me what it was. So over all an ok hotel just not for me

    2
« Things got off to a bad start. »

The first problem with our room was that it was down a very long corridor and up two flights of stairs with no lift. As with are old, and also expect four star hotels to have lifts to all floors, this was an unpleasant surprise. Inside the room we noticed litter on the floor and no towels at all in the bathroom. This was soon resolved, but it should never have happened. Next we noticed that the mixer tap on the washbasin only produced a dribble of water, and this was either scalding hot or cold, nothing in between. I find it difficult to believe that the housekeeping staff had never noticed this problem, so I believe that it should have been reported and fixed long before we got there. The following morning we reported the tap problem to reception, but when we returned to our room late in the evening nothing had been done, neither were we left any message. On our second morning I made it clear to reception that we wanted another room and I wanted to speak to the manager. Fortunately the manager didn't try to fob us off with excuses for the disgraceful treatment we had received, and he did arrange for us to be transferred to a newly refurbished room close to the only small lift in this large and rambling building. Therefore I have decided not to give this hotel a rating of 'terrible' that I feel would be justified, but to be generous and rate it as 'poor' instead; a pity as it's quite a nice building.

    « Great Staff! »

Stayed at this hotel for two nights on our visit to Kendal. The staff are very welcoming, kind and friendly. They are an asset to the owner and made our stay very comfortable. The first room we were given did not have a bath and as requested they moved us without any fuss. The bed and the room was very clean and spacious. The quality of the products in the room was very good and authentic. We ate in both of the hotel restaurants and the food was tasty and well prepared. My only criticism is the noise of fellow guests banging doors....quiet door closures would be great as there a lot of doors in the corridors. Not good in the middle of the night.

« Great staff and service »

Spent the week here for work reasons. I can not fault the staff or room great service from the bar staff can't fault the views ether. Set a few miles from Kendal there are lovely walks to go on or just enjoy the piece and quiet.

« You too can live life to the full in a castle. »

Are you a perfectionist like me.....read on. From check-in to check-out this hotel gives you excellence in the minutest detail. Need a stich-in-time use the sewing kit in the bath room, shoes a little worse for wear reach for the shoe shine kit. The staff are first rate and couldn't be more helpful, yes you could say it's their job but goes a whole lot further than that and nothing is too much trouble....thanks one and all.

« Wonderful Staff and Clean, Comfortable Rooms »

Disclosure: I am an American and this one of 2 European hotels I've stayed in, and since perspective is relative, I wanted to disclose that. This is not fancy, but it is nice, and it was plenty clean and comfortable. I would be happy to stay here again. It's a little outside of town, so the views are nice, but if you want to be withing walking distance of the shops and restaurants, maybe try somewhere else. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The bar/lobby/restaurant areas are all of good size. Never too crowded during the week. Breakfast is pretty good - big selection between hot and cold choices.

    « A pleasure to stay here. »

I haven't stayed here on business for a couple of years, but as my wife and I decided on a weekend in the lakes, well this was a natural choice. We were not disappointed. This is a very nice hotel. Location is great, and not too far from the M6, so after a long drive its a good place to rest before the lake district walks. The car park is a little taxing for those with walking difficulties, I have to say, and it does get very busy. So, perhaps a consideration for those who have problems with slopes and steps. The rooms, well our room at least, was very good. Roomy clean and neutral decor. Big bath and powerful shower that worked, and a decent sized TV. Perhaps the WIFI needs a bit of attention. It did tended to drop off and slow down and would prove an irritation if I was staying on business. We had dinner in the restaurant and the service and food, and the wine was excellent. The staff throughout are all very professional and extremely friendly, and genuinely so. All in all this is an excellent hotel, and I will be staying again when next in the area. Its a no risk hotel, Very nice.

    « Great stay »

Saturday visit. Staff were helpful and friendly. Food was excellent both at lunch time and in the evening. My grandsons 18th birthday was made very special thanks to all the concerned. Thank you. Rooms were quiet and clean. My disabled husband as well catered for and was able to access every part of the hotel.

    « Lovely Stay »

We spent two nights here while visiting the Lake District. Reception was very warm. The room was small compared to US standards but it had a lovely shower. I appreciated the hot chocolate mix and cookies. As a bonus, the spring flowers were in bloom.

Great location. A very clean and welcoming hotel. Large family room was ideal for our 2 boys. The pool was lovely and so warm. Food in Alexanders was good but a little over priced for what was pub food.

    « Lovely place »

Visited Castle Green as a last couples treat before our son was born in November. Fab big spacious room, huge comfy bed, lovely pub meal and gorgeous buffet breakfast. Very helpful friendly staff. Definitely recommend this hotel and we will be back as a family ??

    « Excellent »

Stayed here for one night. The hotel was very clean, and the views to die for. The one thing that stood out for us was that you did not have to venture out for anything. The hotel has a range of options available from excellent food served in the pub, to the hotel restaurant. Would recommend.

    « Great Service »

During our recent stay we observed that the service was excellent, the wine choice very good, the bed extremely comfortable and the pool very clean. Breakfast & breakfast service was also excellent. There is no more one can say however, the hotel made our trip most enjoyable

« Relaxing stay at this smart hotel with excellent facilities »

I returned to the Castle Green for a relaxing 4-night stay over Easter Weekend. I travel with my elderly Mum who has limited mobility, and we were made to feel very welcome by the friendly and professional team who were always on hand to help. This year we were in newly renovated rooms on the 2nd floor, which were quiet and peaceful with a wonderful view of rolling hills. While Mum was resting each day I took full advantage of the excellent gym and swimming pool. The breakfast buffet was outstanding with a beautifully cooked full English plus plenty of fresh fruit, juices and pastries. We will return next year. Highly recommended.

    « Fantastic experience »

I chose this hotel at random as I had some business to attend to around the lake district. I was actually taken aback at the whole experience. It was great. The hotel is in a great position and is kept to a high standard. The staff in every department were really helpful and pleasant. The food in the greenhouse was to die for and breakfast was good. I had recently spent 2 weeks on a Caribbean cruise with fine dining and the chef and his team at this hotel produced equivalent food. Thanks

    « Lovely night away »

Enjoyed a lovely break at the castle green. We stayed in an executive room which was so spacious & had incredible views. The hotel staff were very friendly and attentive. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food was some of the nicest we've had. The only complaint was we couldn't stay longer. Would highly recommend

« Didn't manage to see the castle from our room, but there's definitely lots of green »

Enjoyed a return trip to the lovely Castle Green Hotel & it was simply amazing. We paid extra for a balcony room, as there were no executive rooms in the old part of the hotel available, & enjoyed a fantastic view over Kendal & the snow tipped hills nearby. Friendly receptionist who even asked if we wanted help with our bags - how rare is that? Room was definitely worth paying extra for, although the shower was a bit 'enclosed' & I thought the bed could have been larger. Unfortunately it was wet & misty on the evening of our stay so, as we couldn't sit out on the balcony & take in the view, we went to the swimming pool & steam room instead - which was fantastic. We are definitely going back - executive room next time...

if we could give more than 5, we would......The staff are fantastic, the hotel is modern, but not in a clinical soulless way....Did I say the staff were fantastic...just making sure as they genuinely were attentive (and happy to go along with a joke or two) you made my wife's 50th birthday a really memorable one...thankyou we will be back, Derrol & Tracey Palmer Paul & Tania Keston xx

    « Absolutley amazing!! »

Just got back from a night away with my boyfriend. And only thing I can say is how much we enjoyed ourselves and were more than happy with the hotel, the staff & facilities provided. Upon arrival we were pleasantly greeted by a gentleman at the reception desk who checked us in and directed us to our room. We were in room 119 which is on the main corridor on ground floor. The room itself was really well decorated and the facilities were great with tea, coffee, water, biscuits etc. The room is slightly smaller than your average but still has all the facilities! The bed was really comfortable and I had such a good nights sleep. We had our meal in the pub, and our table was ready as soon as we walked in. The food was delicious and the staff were very pleasant and attentive. Would definitely return!! The pool and steam room was great & well maintained - the staff there were also very helpful :) The highlight for me was the breakfast.... Absolutley amazing! The food was all fresh and there was sooooo much on offer! The staff were all really friendly and service did not slip despite it being fairly busy. All in all we had an excellent stay at the Castle Green hotel and will most definitely be returning and recommending.

    « Wedding reception »

Our son has just had his wedding reception at this hotel, and it exceeded all of our expectations. Every single member of staff deserves every credit for their professionism. Nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in an executive room which was beautiful, comfortable and extremely spacious. The wedding breakfast was exceptional, attention to detail didn't go unnoticed. I doubt how anyone can top last weekend, with guests saying it was the best wedding they had ever been to. Well done to the whole team for making the day so magical, one we will treasure forever.

    « Business as usual »

This was our, I think, 10th visit to the Castle Green. As always, we enjoyed our stay. Alexander's is even better now than it used to be. We had a very enjoyable meal in there on our first night. Only other meals we had were breakfast. Again, top notch. We always make use of the swimming pool now that we have our daughter with us,aiming to arrive in time for the child swim times of 1400-1600. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating. However, one small observation. The chap who works in the bar appears to be running around at 100mph. He gives the impression he's over worked! Maybe he is,but the rest of the staff hide it. Having said that,he was very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to return at some point over the summer. Our daughter wasn't happy we left......

« Lovely hotel with great food »

Food selection was great Hotel was lovely Renovation currently going on while I stayed however this did not cause a problem in the slightest! Very quiet rooms and large and clean Breakfast was also very good Would stay here again Only downside...wifi wasn't very good in room

    « Excellent hotel »

Stayed two nights in an executive room. The room was super clean, the super king size bed was extremely comfortable. We ate in Alexander's on the first night and the food was delicious. We are in the restuarant the second night and was blown away by the food there. The breakfast was one of the best I have had and the staff are a credit to this hotel. Well done and we will be back soon

    « Toptastic »

Super friendly staff, very polite, thoughtful and proud. We spent a couple of nights here for our 10th anniversary and they had a card and some simple but very thoughtful gift waiting for us. The hotel grounds are nice and it's about 1 mile from Kendal station. Every morning at this time of year you can hear and see the sheep in the surrounding farms especially the newborn lambs that look so sweet. The food is great at the pub attached to the hotel. See review for Alexandra's. The pool is small but just right. The steam room is nice as well and the gym facilities are very good. This is a four star hotel. That offers a five star plus welcome and experience.

« Short but enjoyable stay »

This was my second stay at Castle Green over the last two years, I broke a journey from Bristol to Aberdeen here over the Easter weekend. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and the bar and restaurant areas are pleasant - the latter with views over Kendal and the local hills. Notably, the bar has Krusovice Pivo on draught. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent, and the staff deserve a mention too, for their friendly, attentive and efficient service.

    3
    « Overpriced in comparison »

We booked through booking.com and paid £170 for a simple double room with no view and mould on the Windows. Tight squeeze with the travel cot as well in comparison to other hotels we stay in. Nightmare journey to hotel to be greeted with lots of wedding guests but that's nobody's fault and with regret I think I would've chosen somewhere else if I'd known about the wedding. Ate in the pub mad food was nothing too special but the waiter was very attentive to our 2 yr old. I was sad to not have had notice re restricted swimming times for children as this hampered our stay and the main reason for booking this establishment. Sorry but wouldn't go back as those couple of things with the price I don't believe we're value for money.

    « Stylish, contemporary hotel. »

Our room had just been redecorated and it was very well designed, lovely colours and a large floral mural on one wall, which was a nice feature. Duvet so comfy and fluffy, large tv, modern clean bathroom. We ate in the greenhouse restaurant and the food was top quality, beautifully presented and very tasty. Nice to have a different choice for vegetarians, beetroot gnocchi and heritage beetroot very tasty. Husband said his lamb was also delicious. Pannacotta dessert with Yorkshire rhubarb superb, excellent quality. Staff very friendly and helpful. Swimming pool lovely and warm, very relaxing. Breakfast choice great. All in all a lovely hotel in nice surroundings with easy access to Lake District.

    « Chilled out »

Stayed here Friday night. Easy to find, beautiful building. entrance & reception area finished to a very high standard. The grounds are immaculate and visually appealing. The reception staff were very helpful, welcoming and friendly. The room was spacious, relaxing and also finished to a high standard. the bed was very big and comfy. There is a bar and a pub on site, both good. The spa facilities are excellent and conference space is huge. The breakfast is a help yourself buffet of good quality produce and the dining staff are very helpful. Will be going back.

« Pleasantly surprised on the whole. »

Having not the best of booking experiences we were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. In a nice setting overlooking the town with, attentive, professional staff and relatively modern decor and quality food and drink. Could recommend room 143 for space and outlook. Our only negative was the Sunday Breakfast when what appeared to be a team of railway workers dined along side us in dirty workwear shouting into mobile phones about how they had been paid for sleeping in their vans all night and now staying in a posh hotel!

    « Really good hotel »

Just returned from a two night stay at the hotel with colleagues. This is a lovely hotel which has recently undergone some renovations, the dining area and resident's lounge are modern and attractive. The meals were excellent with a varied menu. My room was comfortable, with white linen and towels. My view was good. The staff are very attentive, they even carried my case and bags when I was struggling, great! I have visited this hotel numerous times and have never been disappointed.

Stayed here valentines weekend , enjoyed every minute. Pleasant and helpful staff . Delicious food from the Alexander pub and greenhouse restaurant . Only one fault was the room was smaller than we expected we overlooked it though as we were only their 2 nights and it accommodated are needs. Would recommend and return.

    « Good staff »

Really nice hotel if you go try out the nature trail at the back of the property! Staff very nice and afternoon tea was very tasty. Rooms let a lot of noise in from surrounding guests and no plugs by the bed. Other than that great stay.

    « Business trip »

Really good hotel, comfortable rooms in glorious countryside. Friendly, helpful staff, didn't eat in hotel but returned for drinks in bar and was made to feel very welcome in comfortable surroundings. Breakfast was comprehensive with good quality food and extensive choice.

« Lovely hotel and staff...wifi not brill »

It was hard to find anything wrong with this hotel except 2 things....wifi up and down and the corridors allow noise to travel and boy did that hotel have some noisy guests that night! But the staff beyond fabulous, the food divine, afternoon teas delicous and bedrooms very comfy. Great business rooms but leisure breaks spot on!!

    « wonderful break »

We have just returned home after another short break at Castle Green. We were in a lovely refurbished ground floor room overlooking the gardens, Kendal and distant Lake District hills. Everywhere spotless and extremely friendly, helpful staff in all areas. Food was great, adequate breakfast with lots of choice, meals both in the Alexander pub and Lounge bar were delicious. Rob especially helpful in Lounge bar and deserves praise. Will definitely return. Thankyou everyone.

« Overnight stay with dinner »

The room was beautifully appointed, clean and warm. Sadly the view was out into a scruffy central courtyard - a shame because the countryside around is lovely. The breakfasts are excellent in this hotel, very varied and delicious, fresh, and in an attractive dining room. The staff, too, are particularly friendly and helpful. For these reasons I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough although the one problem I did encounter was the WiFi which just didn't work in our room until the Sunday morning when we were going home.

« This is the ideal place for that special Celebration, »

14 months ago I started organising my 80th birthday weekend for all my family with Castle Green Hotel, Kendal. Initially with Ben, the delightful Manager, who assured me his staff would look after me, Dave who also filled me with confidence and subsequently Laura Eastham, Events Organiser who with great charm and positivity steered me through booking 5 suites, 6 double rooms and dinner for 21. I organised adventure rope work with Geoff of Live for today for 6 boys from 16 to 49 years old, in the woods behind the Hotel. They had a ball and to hear the video of it showed all their laughter as they encouraged each other.. 6 grandchildren/daughters in law had spa massages or manicures which they loved. The staff could not have done more to make our event a marvellous memory. Justin the Chef put on the most wonderful food which everyone kept mentioning to me afterwards, restaurant staff were friendly and helpful, and the two Lauras on reception, charmed us all with their efficiency and bright interest. I must mention the suites which are a joy to spend time in. Mark and Carol had the suite overlooking the side of the hotel which had them spellbound. They loved it as did everyone else in their accommodation. Altogether the happiest of experiences, so relaxed and laid back. Thank you all so much for making my birthday celebration something to remember with extreme joy.

Attended a 2 day conference and found the hotel staff to be very friendly and helpful. Check in was speedy and with a smile. Food was good quality. Conference facilities were great. Good gym facilities and a lovely swimming pool. Thoroughly enjoyable stay thank you. Just missing the lift as carrying luggage to second floor wasn't fun.

Went to Castle Green for a Meeting (AGM) buffet was provided the salad on the plats did not seem that fresh don't know how log it had been cut up for but the lettuce soup came in small coffee cups and was cold a member asked for some extra bread rolls young waiter chap said be careful plat is hot and it was barely worm and the roll was cold and slightly frozen in side when items were taken of the table to be taken to be washed there was not excuse me from the waiting on staff just them stretching past you to get things off the table

    « Horrible room. »

Stayed here for a couple of nights. Given a horrible tiny, poky, dark room. The shower cubicle was so small that if you dropped anything in the shower, you had to open the door and step into the bathroom to retrieve it! Lights had to be on all day as the room was so dark. Tiny single wardrobe and small bed. The only positive thing was that it was clean. We had lots of activities planned which meant that we weren't in much, otherwise I would have refused to stay in it. Breakfast was chaotic with hot items running out and we had to ask three times for toast and when it finally arrived it was white and not brown. Coffee was disgusting and bread was cheap, thin stuff out of a bag. Receptionist at checkout never bothered to ask if we had enjoyed our stay and when I told her how disappointed we had been, she was utterly uninterested. We use Best Western a lot and this is easily the worst experience we have had. I can only assume that those who gave it great reviews, don't get out much.

« Looks nice but with a cost »

Just met up with relatives in Alexanders pub at the Castle Green Hotel for a sunday bear and a bite to eat.Nice surroundings with lovely views over Kendal and a pleasant atmosphere, that was until we looked at the menu ,over £5 for soup and £4.75 for a cheese and pickle sandwich which for a pub i thought was expensive mind you the fish and chips looked good at £10 95 more in line with restaurant prices than pub grub. Everyone enjoyed the food ,even the soup was good with two slithers of bread but not enough even with a bucket of chips as a extra filler .Lovely staff and a pleasant experience but over priced .

    3
« Nice enough and decent price »

Just returned from a Saturday night stay over at this hotel. Staff were very friendly. We picked the hotel mainly due to the price compared with others with the same facilities; we wanted a pool to relax in after a day's mountain biking. Pool was rather small but wasn't busy when we there. Overall, I would recommend the hotel.

    « Wonderful! »

My husband and I have just had a three night stay at The Castle Green and it was fantastic. « Very comfortable »

Really good stay. Very clean room and excellent shower pressure. Well placed to see the lakes with plenty of parking. Only down side is that it's out of town for restaurants etc. but that's a choice of location.

« Excellent, will go back anytime in area. »

Visited to have a lunch meeting, and was very impressed. It has a superb location with distant views, easy to find, and park. The food was what I will remember,as top quality,we all had different, well presented, and we were shown sample bedrooms. British hotels can vary, but this is large but intimate,we enjoy visiting quality places,eg day before we were at Sharrow Bay.Both excellent but difference is large but personnal hotel, and bijou place

    « Excellent, excellent, excellent!! »

My husband and I stayed at Castle Green for a 1 night birthday break and loved every minute. Although the weather was wet and miserable we still managed to explore Kendal with its quirky tea rooms and good array of shops. It's a five minute drive from the hotel but I'm sure on a sunny day would be a lovely walk. We opted for a balcony room and had great views overlooking the gardens and in the distance Kendal and Kendal castle. The room was a good size and the bed was so comfy! Great heater in the room and plenty of choices on the tea/coffee tray. We used the swimming pool and steam room which were excellent, love the relaxing music in the steam room. The staff in the fitness centre were really helpful and even loaned us a pound for the locker. We ordered room service, the menu is limited but still a good range, we went for the gammon dish and the burger and both were lovely. Breakfast was delicious and so much choice! We both went for the cooked breakfast which were fresh and hot. This is a really lovely, well run hotel. The staff are all helpful, polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend to my friends and family.

    « Would definitely recommend!! »

« Nice room, lovely breakfast »

We stayed here for one night, arriving late on a wet evening. The car park was busy but the hotel was easy to find. We had one of the recently refreshed room and it was very pleasant - not large but everything we needed was there and the decor was very stylish. I didn't get to use the gym this time but breakfast was very good with a nice selection and pleasant service. The only downside was the internet - almost unusable due to both the speed and the timeout requirements, we were limited to checking the text of emails, any other browsing was impossible.

    « 25 anniversary trip »

Excellent weekend away from the friendly welcome at check in to the breakfast on our final morning there. Made to feel welcome in Alexanders pub in the grounds, the food was very good as were the local ales. Breakfasts were fantastic and filling and food in the hotel restaurant was very very good. The room we had was very spacious and the bathroom and shower were to a very good standard.

    « great valentines celebration! »

went on the valentines special overnight stay at the castle green with my wife and 8 year old daughter. visited this hotel a few times over the years and it rarely disappoints. we arrived early but were told our room was ready and we could go straight up. one stand out part of this hotel is the staff who always smile and greet you every time you pass them. we used the pool and spa facilities, then went for a lovely meal in the greenhouse restaurant. the room was spacious and very clean. breakfast was good with the usual smiles from the staff, checkout was efficient, very hard to find fault with this hotel. one small thing noticed by my wife was the pool tiles were quite grubby and needed cleaning. I meant to point this out on checkout but completely forgot. hopefully it will soon be rectified, but overall another excellent stay. thanks to all staff for their kindness.

    « 2 day winter break »

My wife and I have been regular visitors here over the last few years, but mainly at weekends. This was our first mid week visit now that I am retired. The hotel has an exceptionally large car park although if you let unlucky, you could end up with a bit of an uphill walk to reception. The reception staff are a real friendly bunch and always welcome a bit of a chat to make you feel welcome. The rooms in general are well appointed and many have been recently refurbished. If you are not too good on your feet request a room either with lift access or on the ground floor as some of the more distant rooms are accessed by stair only. The large bed was comfortable and the room was appointed with the usual big HD television with Freeview, quality furniture and a nice modern bathroom with a very powerful shower. Available were the usual tea/coffee and biscuits plus bottles of water. The first night we tried Alexander's (the pub/eatery within the grounds) and had a very comfortably couple of hours in there. They serve a more extensive selection of draft beers. The second night was in the main restaurant and we treated ourselves to Chateaubriand for two, expensive but worth it. Although we didn't use them this time, there is also the swimming pool and gymnasium if you are so inclined. Kendal town is about a twenty minute downhill walk from the hotel and if you don't fancy the return uphill walk a 42A bus drops you off with a 5 minute walk to the hotel.

« Taking the Mayor home »

After our daughter in law's kidney transplant, donated by her husband our son, my wife and I took our son (the Mayor of Kendal) home. We decided to stay for a couple of nights bed and breakfast at the Castle Green Hotel. This hotel we would highly recommend should you wish to stay around Kendal and the south Lakes. We received an excellent and very friendly welcome from the staff throughout our stay, although we were unable to dine in the restaurant due to looking after our son, the menu looked superb. We believe most if not all of the rooms have super king sized beds which are very comfortable. The hotel has a leisure area which includes a swimming pool and various beauty treatments. A hotel not to be missed off your list.

    5
    « A regular visitor's view »

I stay in the Castle Green hotel most weeks for business. The hotel is always clean and well-run, with good food (great breakfasts). The staff are very good; well presented and helpful; I would definitely recommend staying here for business or pleasure.

    « Valentine's weekend away »

Me and the missus travelled up to the Lake District from Cambridgeshire for a weekend away. Decided on The Castle Green Hotel as it had such good reviews and it hasn't disappointed! From the moment of booking, when I rang back several times with various questions and to book us in for dinner, to the day we left, the staff were all extremely helpful and couldn't do enough for us. We had just climbed Wansfell Pike before we arrived and so we were in our (fairly) muddy walking gear. Slightly apprehensive about walking in to the reception of what looks like a very posh hotel both from the outside and in. We needn't have worried as the lady at reception welcomed us with a smile and made it very easy to check in, remind us about dinner and breakfast, and told us we had been put in one of the newly refurbished rooms and were one of the first people to stay in it. Rooms are of a top quality finish, beds extremely comfortable, nice big HD television with Freeview, quality furniture and a nice modern bathroom with a very powerful shower! Just what we needed. The curtains are completely blackout in the new rooms which led to a great nights sleep. Complimentary bottles of water were prepared for us as well as the usual coffee and tea (and hot chocolate.) We had our four course valentines meal on Saturday night and again the waiters and waitresses were top class. Friendly, relaxed and all with a smile. I was particularly impressed with whichever member of staff we asked a drink for, or questioned about our food, they all seemed to know what was going on at our table and were more than happy to oblige. The food was absolutely beautiful. We had a chicken confit stater and a steak for main which was bloody wonderful. Cooked to perfection and a great slab of meat with chunky chips stacked next to it and tomato and mushroom. A champagne sorbet between those courses and a chocolate fondant with ice cream to finish, with a couple pints of the very nice local ale, left me full to the brim and ready for that comfy bed. At £38 per person, we thought this was actually a very reasonable price given the quality of food and service that comes with it. All in all a lovely weekend away made even better by the choice of hotel. Keep it up guys. Cheers

« Consistently good; welcoming stay »

Stayed over the weekend with 11 member family group. We've stayed before and the hotel is consistently good at getting the basics right - attentive service, smiling staff, and listening to what customers want. This time was no different - even 2 family birthdays were well catered for. They have made some interesting changes recently to the bar and lounge area - a very sympathetic and contemporary remodelling - and redecorated the restaurant. Tim and his team continue to invest ( there are bedroom redecorations happening right now ) and I'm sure that this helps the hotel remain popular with both regular visitors (our 6th visit) and new guests as well. Keep it up! See you again in the summer!

    « Wedding anniversary »

Booked in for our first wedding anniversary we were given a upgrade on the room which turn out to be one of there executive rooms which made it extra special and we had a meal in the restaurant in the evening and the staff are all a credit to the hotel

    « Two night stay »

The hotel and staff are lovely. Its setting is picturesque and it's easy to find. I was disappointed with my dated room but the hotel is currently being refurbished so I am positive next time I visit my room would be a bit more modern. Breakfast was brilliant with a good selection of continental and cooked choices. The bar food was also very tasty. The gym and pool facilities were better than average and more importantly clean. I would stay here again and I look forward to doing so.

    « Family wedding »

We went here for a family wedding, to be fair we paid extra and had the premium room which was beautiful, roomy and stylish. It was without doubt one of the nicest rooms l have ever stayed in. Combine this with excellent food and top class staff and it comes up trumps!!l l had read reviews saying the hotel was too far from town but on my opinion if you pay £100+ for a top class hotel what is a £3 taxi ride to complain about?

« Superb in every way! »

I booked a surprise spa weekend (which was incredible) for my sister, niece and myself, we had an executive family room which was fantastic and huge, very clean and a great bathroom. My husband joined for dinner in the evening in The main restaurant and it was the most beautiful meal we've had in a long time. Outstanding food. The staff all through the hotel were excellent and the customer service is the best I've experienced in this country, Many thanks to all at Castle Green for making our weekend a very special one ??. We can't wait to return for a second visit.

« Well below our expectations »

We decided on a romantic 4 night break in the Lakes. We chose this hotel based on the fact that we wanted use of a swimming pool and a good quality hotel. We thought from the reviews that this hotel would be top notch! This hotel is far from top notch and seems to still be relying heavily on it's past scores as it proudly displays it's 5 star trip advisor plaque at reception. The breakfast buffet is not that desirable the cooked breakfast looks better from my work canteen to be honest. You can have freshly prepared poached/scrambled eggs but you will be waiting a long time to get them. The service is shocking for a 4 star, on 3 of our 4 days we got half of our order at breakfast every time, toast would arrive without the eggs and there would be an extra 10 min wait for eggs, then another day eggs would arrive and no toast for ages. The rooms in this hotel are very bland too, it's just like a very expensive premier Inn. At £100 a night we expected a lot better to be fair, and this was out of the holiday period. Maybe we are just not used to the inflated hotel prices in the UK, but you could expect a Top notch hotel in most places in Europe for this price, especially as my parents travelled to a 5 star Eco resort on the outskirts of Barcelona with flight included for less than we paid in the Lakes during the same period.

    « Absolutely devine food! »

My partner and I (both mid-twenties) stayed overnight on a Sunday. Our room was very clean and comfortable, the bed was huge and the room had everything we needed and a lovely view. The pool was a nice feature and the gym facilities were better than expected- not just your average hotel gym! However the best part of our stay was the food. We both had the five course tasting menu and it was BEAUTIFUL. We both enjoy eating out and this was up there with the best meals we have had. The staff were friendly and helpful and we wil definitely be back

« Excellent hotel for wedding! »

We had a great stay for my friend's wedding. The food was lovely and a perfect wedding reception and night do. We also had a lovely stay at the hotel. Would recommend for a wedding or longer stay in the Kendal area!

« Excellent service and food »

We needed a nice space for about 16 family members to gather, relax, eat and chat after a funeral. For this reason I was trying to organise it at pretty short notice and can only commend staff (Penny and others) for their helpfulness, prompt responses and willingness to adapt to our needs. They reserved us a space in the lounge on a reasonably busy early Friday evening, and had also set us a long table in the dining room. We wanted slightly less formal food than the restaurant but more choice than the lounge and so again it seemed no trouble for them to arrange that if we ordered at about 5.30 to eat at 7 we could have food form the Alexanders pub menu. When we arrived we were promptly attended to with menus, a sheet to write our choices on and even a pen! When were invited through to eat service was efficient and very friendly and the food was really good too! (I had the sea bass, as did a few others, and it was delicious) A very relaxed and stress free ending to the day. Many, many thanks.

    « Lacking expectation... »

The first thing noticed by our car full of friends and family, was the lack of signage directing people to the restaurant. 2 of the party had heart conditions and found the amount of steps up from the car park to the hotel reception (after several wrong turns) pretty exhausting. After FINALLY reaching the bar/lounge area outside The Greenhouse Restaurant, we were shown to our table and given our menus. 20 mins later, the young lady came to take our drinks order (they were not especially busy - perhaps 3 couples and a table of 4, at most). We attempted to order at the bar to save time, but were told to sit down again and wait for service. The drinks arrived in due course, but we had to wait over 45 mins for the soups and sandwiches to arrive. The cost of the soup was a rather minty £5, bearing in mind that I was presented with the tiniest (2mm!!!) of slices of bread I'd ever seen. Feeling a bit like Mr Twist, I actually asked (politely) for a larger slice, and the comment back from the staff was a broad smile and 'I don't know why chef bothered with such a small piece. I bet he couldn't do it again'? I had to laugh at her humour. The soup was tasty, but tepid. My husband gave his soup to my father for the same reason. The plates of sandwiches were really dry and the salad pretty limp, to say the least. Unfortunately, the ham sandwich also suffered the wrath of the chef's portion control with an extremely meagre offering of meat. On a more positive note, the crisps were fine!! Sadly, all in all, severely lacking in both quality of food and service. Not what one would expect from the hotel which advertises itself as "standing out from the crowd through our keen eye for detail and quality of service". I also suspect that being "passionate about food" is possibly restricted to the Greenhouse Restaurant and not the Lounge area outside. It was agreed that none of our party would be returning to this eatery and we are not tempted to reserve a table in The Restaurant, despite some positive reviews on TA. Perhaps this was just an 'off' day for them?

    « Brilliant!! »

Stayed here for one night with friends. Can't fault it! Our room was spotless and very comfortable and the evening meal was simply superb Breakfast was good although I prefer cooked breakfast served and cooked fresh(hot buffet) and the choice for the cold buffet was again outstanding both in choice and quality

    « Great customer service »

Despite the fact that there are hotel renovations currently ongoing I have no hesitation in recommending this as a great place to stay with customer service that strikes the right balance- supportive but not intrusive. Really impressed by the calm way in which the reception and duty manager dealt with a bathroom issue- quickly resolved by a no fuss room change and profuse apologies despite the issue being something out of their control. Overall room quality was good- well furnished and comfortable. Great buffet style breakfast. Great Base for exploring the lakes

    « Amazing! Wow!!! »

we went here for Cumbria vag show, the views are so amazing I couldn't believe the views for the money we paid it is such a beautiful place so quite and romantic, the little pub next door is just fab , me and my partner felt like It was home truly amazing. The food in the restaurant is exspensive but don't be put off by the price we were going to eat out the second night but it was so amazing we stayed in, I loved it, truly 5 out of 5!

« Nice hotel in Summer and Winter but can be pricey! »

I Have stayed at the Best Western in Kendal both in September 15 and recently in January. First stay there was a lot of noise from other guests, I'm presuming a party and the fire alarm went off at 3 am which was frustrating. My previous stay in January was pleasant but other times of the year hotel is very pricey. Breakfast is lovely and plentiful, staff are more than helpful. Certain other guests have a 'snobby' nature and felt they were looking down but I just ignored this as they were no better than me.

« CHRISTMAS BREAK SPOILT BY OVERCROWDING! »

Having read recent rave reviews for this hotel regarding Christmas and New Year breaks, I am very obviously going to be in the minority with my opinion. Nevertheless I wish to express some misgivings I and my husband had about our experience between the 23rd and 26th of December 2015. First of all some positives. I think the hotel itself is fabulous, the location good especially for access to the town. Our room, despite not being the one we would have chosen (not the fault of the hotel), was comfortable and clean, the public areas all pleasant. The newly refurbished dining room has been thoughtfully decorated and without a doubt the food is the 'jewel in the hotel's crown'! We arrived on the 23rd December for what was to be a four night stay and were greeted by the very efficient Laura with whom I had liaised with prior to our arrival. Despite what other reviews have said we were offered help with our luggage as we were three flights up and yes we had been informed there was no lift. On the first night we ate in 'Alexander's Pub'. Being from Derbyshire we know what a good pub should be like and this to us was more like a restaurant with a very small bar and seating area and totally inadequate for the amount of people there. The staff, all young (an observation only as we like SOME of the younger generation), seemed more interested in fraternising with their pals who were propping up the already overcrowded bar on this particular evening, but when it came to the food we had no complaints. After leaving Alexander's we returned to the hotel bar, which we immediately observed was very small for a hotel of the size of the Castle Green. Once again we were not impressed with the bar staff especially as having ordered our drinks we were left waiting for an age before my husband enquired where they were and was told by the waiter they had been forgotten! My husband a very mild mannered man had by this time lost his patience and so we left. As we did so a young female member of the restaurant staff asked if everything was alright to which my husband replied 'no' and explained to her what had happened. She apologised but we still left for our room. The following day, Christmas Eve we had an enjoyable breakfast and decided to eat in the restaurant that evening. The food was faultless and most enjoyable. However, when we retired to the bar area after the meal all seats were taken and the bar packed. After one drink standing we again returned to our room. Christmas day was sadly a disaster. Breakfast again was good and we enjoyed a walk before getting dressed for a pre-dinner drink for the 4pm sitting, which fortunately we did manage to have seated before our meal which we thought was wonderful, but after was shambolic. The tiny bar was packed to capacity with the loudest and scruffily dressed people we have ever seen in a respectable hotel. Dress is I accept a matter of opinion and an emotive subject, BUT the hotel does have a dress code, which seemed to have been totally disregarded by many, particularly the men some of whom looked as if they had just come back from a run including filthy training shoes and feet on chairs! We know these people were non-residents as we overheard some of the conversation ? impossible not to. There were no vacant seats and no hope of getting anywhere near the bar and so having gone to the trouble of dressing tidily as a mark of respect to our fellow guests and to the hotel staff who after all had strived to make everything as nice as possible, we returned to our room for the rest of Christmas Day evening. Thank goodness we had brought some drink and the TV was good! Our break was fortuitously cut short due to our having to return home a day early as the thought of another chaotic evening was more than we could face. Despite the positives about the hotel we have cancelled our intended return visit this coming year, due to the sheer volume of people being catered for. There is no blame apportioned to the hotel in respect of the way people dress but they either enforce the code by stating no jeans and training shoes in the dining room during the evening and on special occasions or do away with it altogether. On a finel note I will jump to the defence of the hotel in respect of a review posted by ' DogandGunKnayton' in May 2014. I would have sued him/her for their remarks and use of vocabulary. This person has clearly got a problem with businessmen and anyone over the age of 40 and likened the hotel to a retirement home! This review has been compiled for like minded people of whatever age group as they will probably be the only ones reading it.

    « Fantastic Christmas break! »

Myself, my husband, my 18 year old son and my mum stayed for two nights on Christmas Day and Boxing day! What a fantastic time we had. The rooms were brilliant with plenty of space, clean and everything you could want in them! The food was top quality even on Christmas day when those poor chefs served 3 sittings. We ate at 7.30 and our food was excellent! ALL the staff were friendly, efficiant and couldn't do enough for you. Considering they never stopped all weekend i think this was admerable! The pool was great, we swam 3 times on Boxing Day! We had a lovely relaxing break with no washing up! Thank you to all at the Castle Green! ps hope you have finally got rid of the glitter!

« Warn and dry in the rain! »

We started for a couple of nights to end 2015 and really enjoyed our break. The hotel was friendly, food good, swimming pool quite busy with lovely relaxing music in steam room. The only drawback was a noisy American family at breakfast - with their children watching videos all through their meal (fortunately with sound off!).

« Fantastic New Years Eve »

Stayed for 1 night with family to celebrate New Year. Perfect! Great food - restaurant quality even though serving about 200 people and so well organised. Staff helpful & friendly. Champagne reception and fireworks at midnight. Expensive but worth it.

« Nice hotel - good pub in the grounds »

The staff were very friendly and helpful which was immediately noticeable The hotel is clean and seemed well organised The location is very good, on the edge of the lakes and ideal for exploring the area The accommodation price is reasonable The rooms have what you need but could be improved with a few finishing touches

    « Best Best Western »

Let me preface this by saying I would never choose a Best Western Hotel. We were there with another couple for a New Year's Eve party for 250 or so people. Frankly, it was brilliant. The room was superb, the overall package was wonderful, the food was excellent and the entertainment very good. The service was as good as I have seen anywhere. From the senior manager who greeted us at our car and helped with our bags, to the bar staff, the kitchen staff who engaged us in conversation at breakfast and the waiting staff who seemed to work every hour available they were brilliant. The presence of senior staff at all times was impressive, the balance between humour and service was impeccable, and individuals like Chloe and Kathleen were just two examples of overall excellence. And i don't like Best Western (and I don't give five start either).

    « Outstanding hotel »

Stayed for two nights over New Year. From arrival to departure this hotel impressed. There were always plenty of staff on duty and that included a very significant number of senior managers; the hotel clearly prides itself on service and they certainly deliver. Staff are well trained, efficient and happy to engage in conversation. We were also impressed with the quality of food, delivered to a high standard to a full hotel. A particular mention for the breakfast staff who I think are the best I've ever encountered. The black tie event on New Years eve was excellent and went like clock work. We met a number of people returning for the forth and fifth time and it's clear why.Leisure facilities and gym were also very good. We hope to return soon

    « Absolutely Tremendous!!! »

Returned for the two night new year package after having such a fantastic time last year. We enjoyed it so much last year that we invited our daughter and new son-in-law to join us. The worry was it was difficult to imagine how it could be as good as 2014 as it was of such a high standard. If anything it was even better. Great rooms, beautiful New Year's Eve afternoon buffet with great music, the newly refurbished greenhouse restaurant looked amazing and as always the service was exceptional. The black tie dinner was of the highest quality, all of the five courses were amazing but the salmon was out of this world. Band was great! It was also nice to see some familiar faces from last year. Very good breakfast and evening meal on Jan 1st was also delicious. Can't recommend hotel this highly enough.

« New year's eve party on recommendation from our friends »

We were greeted by friendly and efficient staff on arrival, in our room within minutes. Room was very nice, clean and well presented. Afternoon tea was a delight. The finger buffet was fresh (hot and cold available) with lovely cakes and cheese and fresh artisan bread to choose from. Plentifully available. The staff were on hand at all times to ensure smooth service. The table magician was a very entertaining touch and made us all laugh with his expertise of illusion. The evening gala dinner was superb. The food hot and beautifully cooked and catered for everyone. Christine and her staff worked tirelessly to ensure smooth running and she was still going strong at 3.30 a.m! The hotel manager was also there to oversee events and he and Christine started us all off on the dance floor. The live band was slightly out of kilter with the age range of guests but the disco made up for that and got everyone dancing the night away. Fireworks - wow !!!!! Fantastic show Breakfast hot and plentiful. Overall a memorable event. Thank you to all the staff for all your efforts, efficiency and friendliness, Table 13 just in case staff need to know who our party was.

« Another great stay at our favourite hotel »

Yet again the food was great and rooms comfortable and clean. It is nice to meet the same staff on return visits. We stayed for two nights around Christmas and enjoyed the ambiance. The only slight downside was a meal in the restaurant with friends on the second evening when an element of the main course for two of our party was missing and we had to prompt the waiter and a glass of dessert wine ordered did not arrive? This is why I have downgraded service otherwise it would have been full marks!

« Our 2nd year for Xmas perfect »

Met with friends again here for 5nights over Xmas it was as good as last year, the food is fantastic (and always piping hot) a special mention for rob as he came up at end of evening to say goodbye because he wasn't on shift on our last day, peter because he was so effcient & did everything at a fast pace(a very hard worker) &finally chris busby it was lovely to have a waiter we could have a little banter with, also very attentive as he seated us one evening and on a table nearby there was a man who kept snorting so we asked to be moved (as we wouldn't have been able to dine relaxed with that) and Chris didn't hesitate to move us (that's perfect customer service)!!!! At breakfast a couple of mornings we had dirty crockery but this was promptly replaced when bought to waitresses attention, our only niggle would be that xmas day because of people dining as well as residents it gets far too crowded in the lounge& can be difficult to find a seat!! On saying that this hotel is run very we'll very well managed,we have just done newyear in a privately run hotel in the south for a very hearty price & it was a shambles from start to finish, wish we lived closer &we would do it in kendal as reviews are fantastic because castle green is just that"FANTASTIC".so a big thank you once again.

    « Christmas afternoon tea »

Visited between Christmas and New Year for their Christmas afternoon which we saw advertised after visiting in September. Wow, it was gorgeous. Everything was fresh, tasty and plenty of it. We were supplied with extra tea and coffee, and had a lovely glass of warm mulled wine on arrival. Staff are always so lovely, and the chef came over to check we knew what everything was and if we were enjoying it. Lovely good old fashioned service.

    « A very welcome break »

Although a little costlier compared to other Best Western Hotels this is a very good place for a break and a base to tour the Lake district. Safely and conveniently located up the hillside above Kendal the hotel and grounds have not been affected by the recent floods. Very helpful and courteous staff; breakfast was very good. However, whilst we had no complaints about dinner we both felt it was expensive for the what we had. It is obviously a very popular facilty in a very well visited part of the country.

    « Fantastic New Year's Eve »

Just come home from a fantastic day and night at the castle green. We have been all over the world on breaks in 5 star hotels and this was as good as any of those. Staff attention to customers is 10 out of 10. The management team are on the go all day and cannot do enough for you ben is tireless we went to bed at 3-00 this morning got up at 10-00 for breakfast and he was there again showing people around to there tables. W e will be going again next year as a group of 8 as we all thoroughly enjoyed the whole day and evening, thanks again. Kevin and Karen baker

« New Years Eve party »

Our second visit to the hotel but the first NYE party. Arrival and check in was smooth and our bags were in our room in two minutes. The afternoon consisted of a few beers and 'a finger buffet', this was excellent - a huge choice of foods, snacks, sandwiches, pizza, mini fish and chips, prawns etc..... Entertainment in the afternoon was very good with a talented duo playing great music. The black tie event began with champagne and hors dourves at 7pm and again this was great, followed by a 5 course meal, disco and a group. The meal was excellent as was the service and the front of house team were clearly well organised and attentive. The 'MC' was good and the DJ too. The seating was tables of 8 and we quickly got to know some friendly and interesting people. After the new year struck there was a brilliant firework display and the party went on until 3 am (which we did not get to see..!). The entire staff were friendly, helpful and only too keen to make your stay a pleasant one. Overall a first rate experience and on this occasion I have to say 'faultless' springs to mind....!

« Mid Christmas- New Year break »

My boyfriend and I have stayed on numerous occasions at this fabulously located hotel sitting upon a hill overlooking Kendal town. The reception we received was welcoming and although remembered as returning guests by one member of staff (the ever attentive Robert), other staff were equally friendly. There was an exceptional attention to detail to every portion of our stay. And although the weather has been appalling we made good use of the sauna and swimming pool, before having some snacks and drinks in both the on site pub and newly appointed restaurant bar area. The hotel is definitely somewhere that we will continue to return to for both short and long breaks. It's brilliantly located for the Lake District and the staff make your stay enjoyable, nothing is too much trouble. The quality and value for money is outstanding. The castle green deserves another star!

« Christmas in the hotel »

We stayed at the hotel from 24th Dec until 27th Dec. On our arrival we were greeted by a very helpful member of staff who took our bags to our room. We were given the "sample" room (refurbishment in 2016). This room was lovely, very clean, warm and suitable for our stay. Our Christmas eve meal was taken in the pub, which is on site, this was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. On Christmas morning we had a more than ample breakfast. The selection on the buffet was amazing and the hot food was just that, hot! Keeping in mind this was Christmas day and staff were working and looking after us whilst we enjoyed ourselves - they were amazing- jolly, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We spent most of the day out of the hotel but on our return we were greeted by happy staff. Our Christmas evening meal was as we had expected, excellent. The food was good as was the service from the staff - who were still smiling. Boxing day was very much the same and enjoyable. On our departure everyone said good bye as they passed us in the corridor - the housekeeping staff were really happy and wished a safe journey. We did manage a swim on our last day and felt that the facilities lived up to the advertising. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to friends and family. We would also like to thank everyone working at this hotel for making our Christmas relaxing and memorable.

« Great bank holiday weekend »

Spent summer Bank Holiday weekend at BW Castle Green. 2 adults and 2 children (5 and 7yo) travelling. In short, this was an excellent base for our exploration of Lake District: + Friendly and helpful staff throughout the hotel, especially one of the main restaurant managers + Excellent cuisine from breakfast to dinner + Spacious, clean, comfortable, bright and up-to-date family room + Nice gardens around the hotel + Quality pool and gym facilities + Free wifi - Please get rid of the silly restriction on pool access for children, the designated times just don't work for any family that visits to explore the area and is therefore not in the hotel during the day. Well-behaved children should be able to go anytime, especially after an all-day hiking trip To conclude, would certainly seriously consider staying at BW Castle Green when visiting the area in the future. Great value.

« Christmas Party Night 'Conveyor Belt of profit for Castle Green' »

For £37 a head I expected more than a 'canteen meal'. The general feeling was 'we've got your money, we get you in, we get you out - next!'. The saving grace of the night was the fantastic band - The Mustard Cutters. The pre-paid ticket price did not include any drinks. However, 'Santa' handed us a gift and inside was a bog-standard office supplies diary with a list of Castle Green's functions for next year inside, and...a voucher for ONE free drink. So, one diary and one free drink between two people - Merry Christmas! Then the sprint of a meal was underway - all rush, rush, rush. 'Have you finished with your breadroll?' was asked several times, to which the answer was 'no, I'd like to keep it.' However, a separate member of staff whipped it away when we weren't looking. The staff tried to remove our as yet un-pulled crackers from the table during the main course - thereafter we had to guard them until we were ready to open them. The food itself was average - although the chef was clearly also in a rush as the carrots and sprouts were hard. Several times the staff pulled our wine bottle out of the cooler to check if it needed clearing away. Several times the staff whipped their fingers unnecessarily over our table, collecting tiny, tiny bits of party popper tendrils. The waiter prior to pouring my coffee, put his finger into the bottom of my cup and dragged out a cardboard disc from the top of a party popper before proceeding to pour my coffee - it was almost comical by this stage. (Why not tip the cup upside down instead - so training of staff and hygiene standards are questionable.) The packet-value mince pies put on our table at the end had some of their crusts missing. The lovely Christmas table lanterns were taken off the tables as we were having our coffee. We were half-expecting them to start vacuuming around our feet. We had to guard our drinks for each other when we went to the toilet for fear of them being cleared away. The positives were - some of the staff were brilliant, the lanterns looked great (for the short time we could enjoy them), and the band were amazing. When the band wasn't playing, the DJ belted out deafening music, so we went out for some fresh air and to rest our ears - to be met by clouds of smoke by the smokers hovering at the entrance. Save your money, have a meal in town, buy your own table lantern, and let them have their function room back - because it'll be a constant battle all night if you dare to presume you'll have a relaxing meal for a pre-paid party ticket.

« An excellent hotel with friendly staff who are a credit to the hotel »

Very friendly staff and good food and menu choices. Room was comfortable and hotel and room very clean and well kept. The leisure suite could benefit from the addition of a Jacuzzi though. The sound insulation in room was not the best as noise in corridors could be clearly heard. The buffet breakfast could be improved as cooked food was dry and hard having been on the hotplate too long, however good selection of hot/cold breakfast food on offer. In summary, taking the downside into account I would recommend this hotel and would have pleasure in staying there again.

    « Wonderful hotel! »

I distinctly remember this hotel, because it was the best room we stayed in on our whole 3 week tour! We had a twin room booked, but somehow we ended up with a Large Family Room (1 double and 1 single bed) and it was sunken (2 or 3 steps from the door to the floor) and ENORMOUS! Beautiful decor too! Plush carpet, and the bathroom was squeaky clean and a good size. Heated towel racks; 2 sitting areas, one with work desk; bed comfy. Breakfast was yum, but things kept running out. Dinner was much better: delicious and prompt! Free slow WIFI. Staff are very friendly and sort problems out quickly. The nearest train station is Oxenholme the Lake District. 5mins by cab from here to the hotel. 20min walk to the Castle, 25mins walk to town.

« Excellent hotel and friendly staff »

Stayed at the Castle green hotel for two nights had a lovely time every thing was as we wanted and expected as the weather was not good to say the least we treated ourselves to a message etc really nice and relaxing. Will definitely return soon. Only down side expected drinks to be dearer but I drink Guinness and black and was charged £4.50 a pint plus 75pence for the black current. I am not tight but I think that is a bit steep. It took a little shine off a lovely weekend. Please Mr bar man have a rethink.

« Castle Green Hotel, Kendal »

The Salutation rated higher. The room seemed smaller but the tea and coffee facilities were abundant. Buffet style breakfasts obviously are less labour intensive but the various items on offer should be topped up more regularly and it should be made clear that all aspects except the pot of tea were self service.

    « Excellent stay »

Such a beautiful hotel and very friendly staff. The food was lovely too, I didnt use the gym. A must if you are in Kendal. would definitely recommend to those who are looking for a good, clean and reasonably priced hotel in this area.

    « Christmas party »

Stayed for 1 night for Christmas party and had a great time. Food was excellent and piping hot despite the large number of people there. Rooms well presented, warm and comfortable with very friendly staff and wonderful breakfast the morning after. Entertainment by the Mussel Cutters, who kept the party and dancing going all evening. My wife and I will definitely be booking this hotel for a weekend away next year.

    « Over crowded »

We went to a Xmas party night on Friday 11 December, to say it was over crowded was a understatement they really couldn't fit more people in. It was not cheap so do not feel why whoever plans these events feel the need to be greedy it just ruined the night and we all went last year as a company works Xmas party but sadly after this year we all do not want to go again. The dance floor was tiny which not even half the people could fit on it even if they wanted to dance. Pls do not go to this place for your works Xmas do unless they lower numbers and stop filing it up just to get more money.

    « Repeat visitor »

The restaurant, as usual, delivers super quality food, locally sourced, and very well presented on the plate. The wine list is very good. The adjacent bar hasn't the same range of ales as the hotel's lower bar, which is a shame. Staff are amongst the most friendly and helpful I've come across

    3
    « Nice hotel room! »

Stayed here during the Christmas break nice hotel, comfortable and clean. Staff were very helpful and the grounds were lovely especially in the snow. Short walk to the local town. Hot pot in the pub on site is a must! Only problem we both caught the Noro virus and were very ill so didn't really use the facilities or leave our room!

    « Very helpful staff »

We arrived as a family on a Sunday evening having no reservation and unplanned as we were not able to get home due to the recent floods in Cumbria. The staff could not have been more helpful and despite being fully booked they made some arrangements and were able to offer us a suite for the night. It was spacious and clean with a separate living area and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious the following morning and again the staff were amazing at trying to find out the best way for us to travel in order to get home. Will definitely go back!

« Relaxing and Enjoyable Stay »

Myself and my girlfriend stayed at Castle Green for one evening over a weekend in December 2015. My girlfriend booked this place as a relaxing birthday weekend away. We had planned to sightseeing the country side during our stay, however, we encountered one of the heaviest storms of the year. This meant we were hotel bound for the stay, this gave us an opportunity to find out what the hotel has to offer. The spa / fitness facilities were great. The gym was small, but it pretty much has everything you need. The room / bathroom were clean and tidy, not much to look at out the window. The service we got were great, they kept us informed of which roads were closed due to the floods. The breakfast was really good, but I'm a big fan of breakfast buffet, so I'm easily impressed with that. On the day of our leave, the weather got better and we got to see the view to the front of the hotel, the country side landscape was stunning. We got the opportunity to walk over to Kendal Castle, it's about 20 minutes walk from the hotel, definitely worth a look when the weather is good. I really enjoyed the stay at Castle Green. Summary: Pro: Service, Food, Facilities Con: Weather / Flood, a tad on the pricey side for us but it was a treat

    « Great break! »

To me this hotel is lovely in all aspects. The public areas are all beautifully decorated, very comfortable and spotlessly clean, as is the hotel bedrooms. The staff were all friendly but maintained a professional manner and were on hand throughout the day should you need anything. The food in the restaurant/bar is excellent quality and teamed with a nice ambience make it somewhere very nice to eat. Situated in a beautiful setting on the outskirts of Kendal, however, if you're fit and the weather is good, it's a nice easy walk into the town centre. There was only one downside and that was the shower. The cubicle is very small, thankfully I'm a slim lady, but also the shower head is fixed far too high up to enable a power shower effect and was more like standing under a drip. Great for people with very long legs but useless for shorter people or anyone with long hair like me and who values a good shower in the mornings. This one downside wouldn't stop me returning and which I plan to do next summer.

    « Disappointed »

My daughter stayed at the Castle Green hotel last night following a works Christmas party. We were supposed to pick her up from the hotel today however we were unable to drive to Kendal from Ulverston because of the serious flooding and road closures so she has had to stay at the hotel for another night. We were disappointed to learn that the hotel are charging her for another nights accommodation (albeit at a reduced rate) especially as some of the other local hotels are offering their rooms free to those stranded by the floods. It would have been a nice gesture if they had followed suit instead of exploiting her situation. Also disappointed to learn from my daughter that there was only basic TV, no sky or freeview and only intermittent wifi in the room.

« Access to hotel could be clearer »

As you drive into the hotel grounds you have a car park on your right and instinct says park in a space. You then are faced with a hike up a patch towards the hotel building only to discover there is another stairway to get to reception. It's actually quite hard especially carrying luggage. Only when you get up there you discover there is another car park where you could have at least dropped the luggage if not parked. The hotel is very well appointed and comfortable with excellent food on offer to accommodate most tastes. The room too are very nice with one drawback being the room heating is dependent on a single electric radiator which is not very easily set. Although it does come on automatically when it goes off the room gets cold quite quickly and it isn't that easy to see how to get the heater back on. Otherwise a nice hotel worth a visit.

    « Unfriendly, unhelpful staff »

Unfriendly, unhelpful staff at check in counter and especially very rude and unhelpful staff at breakfast restaurant. As a new diamond member, at check in counter, staff replied, the only different between standard and diamond member is a free news paper. At breakfast restaurant, the waitress was rude and unhelpful.

Visited Castle Green for the 4th time, yet again thoroughly enjoyed.Ate at Alexanders Friday night and the food was great, breakfasts great every morning with all the staff being very helpful. The weather unfortunately was really bad but it didnt stop us enjoying ourselves. One niggle and its the same one as last year as we had the same room (131) which though a huge family room you get woke every morning at 7 when the gym opens and they turn their music on,please please turn it down until say 8.30 or improve soundproofing. A great place to visit and eat is Hawkshead brewery.

    « Excellent Quality »

The rooms were spotless, the food was great and the staff were excellent. Customer service here was 10/10 - special mention about the employee Leona who went above and beyond entertaining my little girl. I would happily stay here and recommend this hotel to anyone a lovely place with great facilities.

    « Excellent stay »

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for one night last weekend. This was our first stay since the bar/restaurant renovations - they have made some really nice changes. All the staff we encounter were really friendly which was a big plus in making our stay enjoyable. The food was fabulous both in the Greenhouse restaurant and the buffer breakfast the morning after. Check in/out was quick and efficient. We will be back (soon hopefully)!

« Wonderfully comfortable hotel in great location »

Castle green hotel is located less than 10 minutes from the M6 and about a mile out of Kendal town centre itself. It is ideal for a stopover or a longer stay. The reception area is warm and welcoming, the decor colourful and pleasing. Love the closed log fire in the lounge bar area. Rooms are comfy and we had a lovely view over Kendal, despite the awful weather, ( it was late November!). Food is good, we ate at Alexander's the Pub, and even with a number of big tables ( conferences etc) the staff dealt with everything very efficiently. A great find for visiting the lakes in real comfort.

    « second visit »

This was our second visit to this hotel and once again a very pleasant experience the renovations are fantastic room lovely and staff are really pleasant. If you are looking for a large pool and spa this is not the hotel for you the pool area is only small but very clean and suitable with an excellent sauna. Food is excellent and I would definitely stay here again.

« A lovely hotel, will be back! »

We arranged to stay here for a few days with 6 friends coming up from Sussex, and after looking at lots of hotels, chose this one, and we were certainly glad we did. The hotel was smart and clean, with two bars serving food and a very good restaurant with a choice of menu s, the standard of food and service was excellent. The bedrooms were a good size and clean, with ample hanging facilities etc, and we also had a small table and two chairs. The bed was very comfortable, and extra pillows were brought up for us, nothing was too much trouble and it was definitely service with a smile. The bathroom was nice and had a very good shower over the bath with amazing water pressure, and plenty of hot water for a bath. There is a spa/gym, a swimming pool and steam room, as well as beauty treatments available, I swam in the pool which was a good size and temperature, and had a luxury pedicure in the beauty spa which was amazing! The public area s are very smart and comfortable, and we definitely appreciated the cream tea by the bar area complete with log burner, we spent a fair amount of time here, the kendal mint cake liquer and hot chocolate, not to mention the mint cake ice cream, were amazing. The staff deserve a special mention, nothing was too much trouble, whether it was extra pillows, advice about walks or the local area, from the staff in the reception, the ladies servicing the bedrooms, the bars and restaurant, and in the pool area and beauty spa, all were very pleasant and made the weekend a success, I will definitely return, and our friends who all travel widely were impressed by the hotel. So thank-you for a lovely few days and I hope we see you again in better weather :0))

    « ween 2110 »

a nice hotel set in lovely grounds and situated within 15mins walking distance to the centre of Kendal and all its amenities. general reception and hotel area was very clean and staff were helpful and pleasant. room was really clean with free wifi and complimentary tray. it has an excellent gym in the basement area with two rooms of equipment and an indoor pool ( not much of a seating area to chill out when not in the pool). we visited the pub attached to the hotel and the food was nice with a good menu choice for adults and children. it fills up quick so you may need to book in advance. there was plenty of choice at breakfast with the usual cereal and cooked food available. not sure if it was worth £15 price tag. overall a lovely stay and would be happy to visit again and recommend to family and friends.

« Easy to find, easy to park, friendly staff. »

Booked just for a couple of nights away. Easy to get to, decent sized car park, very friendly staff, everything in the rooms as you'd expect (good shower, decent bed, easy wifi) and a decent pint of real ale in the pub on site. Very walkable distance into Kendle centre and you can cut through via the castle.

« Comfortable, well appointed hotel... »

Recent refurbishment has considerably improved this popular hotel situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. The bedrooms are well appointed and even standard rooms have trouser presses, Gilchrist and Soames cosmetics and complimentary mineral water. The restaurant has been given a makeover too and the food is of a very high standard. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Great for conferences, weddings or as a base to tour this beautiful corner of England.

    « big rooms »

stayed here in a suit for 2 nights £180.00 a night. room was nice and big.staff was nice. nice to have dressing gown and slippers good tea selection in room. room was kind of clean (marks on carpet, very dusty, bed messy) no fridges in room for the price would want a fridge, towels was nice but hard same as dressing gowns. grounds was nice good views. lovely big windows that opened u could control your own heating what was good as don't like heating on throw night. staff was very smartly dressed. kettle was black inside with mould so not only did I have to buy a fridge had to buy a kettle couldn't use the one in room. myself and partner thought we would make a special effort to dress up and go to the hotel for a meal on the second night we asked the older women if she could make an appointment for my hair and make up to be done she replied come down tomorrow and the girls will book u one. we went down for breakfast next day what was not very nice all stud under heat lights sausage was horrible eggs like rubber 1 cup of tea no body asked if we wanted more if u were wearing a suit u we treat like royalty everybody else was stuck in the middle of the room. we then went to book my appointment with the other girl on the desk she couldn't find no place that did make up so I decided do it myself. on the night we went for our meal that seemed to last hours in the cool room (I sat with my coat on) service was very slow. why sitting waiting I was watching the young boy in the kitchen serving up the food as he was serving the food with a spoon he then put the spoon in he's mouth and used again serve some think else I was very put off by this but them 2 meals went to the table behind. our meals did come after watching the young lad didn't do this again the meals was very nice we decided not to have no more and asked to see the manger after waiting 15 more minutes we just went to room. when checking out we were not asked about or stay at all. swimming pool was closed and room was like walking into ikea and no welcome pack in room or menu

« Lovely hotel, beautiful place. »

Stayed here for a weekend. Rooms were very comfortable & clean, the only down side was our room was on the second floor, no lift, ok not a problem for younger probably fitter people, my friend is 78 & asthmatic, it was my fault as the receptionist did explain about there being no lift, I said it was ok not realising that there were some long corridors as well, anyway apart from that small point, shower could do with modernising, hot water was plentiful but water pressure fluctuated all the time. Our room was at the back of the building & quiet, our stay most enjoyable, staff were very helpful & pleasant, help to carry our cases to & from the room was much appreciated. Food was very good, only hiccup was the French beans had only been introduced to the water, very al dente, but once again a small point. So a great hotel in a beautiful part of the country.

    « Excellent Hotel »

I visited this hotel for one Sunday night in November. This is a lovely hotel. The whole place is clean and tidy, the grounds are immaculate. We were efficiently welcomed at the reception a quickly allocated a room. The room appear to be on two floors the first and second floors. We were on the second floor, our room was really nice. The room was light and well decorated. The beds were comfortable. We enjoyed all of our stay. The breakfast is a buffet breakfast but everything is top quality. The waiter will bring you fresh eggs and porridge if you ask. The breakfast room overlooks the grounds and at present the turning leaves are a wonderful sight. We will definitely be visiting this hotel again.

« average hotel with lovely gardens »

we went to the castle green for 1 night as a surprise for my daughters 18th birthday .we booked this hotel because of the swimming pool but got told the day before it was not available I explained that was the reason I had booked it but just got told there was nothing they could do the room itself was clean but no better than a nice premier inn there wasn't a lot of choice when in the bar but we did eat at alexanders pub which is on site and the food and service were great the hotel is a bit overpriced for what it is.

    « Another great stay »

I stay in this hotel often for business; the hotel is well appointed and staff are always very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay overnight or for longer in Kendal.

« Great Location, Great Service »

We had an enjoyable short stay here in October 2015. The hotel is comfortable, serves excellent food beautifully presented, and all the staff are pleasant, polite and efficient. Our "Superior" bedroom was smaller than imagined & we guess "Superior" refers to the existence of a private balcony affording splendid views over the hotel garden and surrounding countryside. The room itself was clean and adequate, and the bed was comfortable. We hate food being served on cold plates so I'm pleased to report this does NOT happen here. Evening meals in the restaurant were first class, and the cooked breakfast buffet was comprehensive and nicely cooked. The Continental Breakfast selection was not as comprehensive as it might have been. Breakfast toast delivered to the table was not much more than warmed up bread, and I hasten to add this appears to be common to many hotels! That's always puzzled me. All in all, a great short break, and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

« Disappointing, not worth the money! »

Visited here after a stay in the Low Wood Hotel in Windermere, so unfortunately the comparisons started immediately- and it just doesn't compare! The hotel is a bit out of the way from Kendal, it's set in beautiful grounds but the indoor decor is not as good. The lounge area for the bar was freezing and the drink choices poor. My mother-in-law had pre-booked meal options, really disappointed with the menus in the bar and restaurant- I'd recommend just heading into Kendal instead! We had a lovely big room, but beds and seating just the same as a travel inn, didn't feel luxurious at all! Generally gutted as we were so excited to stay! Really frustrating having a pool (which was basic) with allocated time slots for children- in half term and supposedly family friendly hotel? Hate to leave such a low mark, but would recommend travelling a bit further into the Lake District for a luxury hotel.

    « A good family hotel »

If you want to stay in the Lake District, look no further than this hotel. Conveniently placed for the Southern Lakes with many places to visit regardless of the weather. Rooms well-equipped with comfortable beds. Large, well-equipped work-out rooms; pool functional but no surrounds where one can relax on loungers;.... ample parking; great gardens - but no deck-chairs... Food excellent and a choice of venues. A really comfortable lounge is the only thing missing at this hotel.

« Just ok. .nothing special. ..breakfast is outstanding! All you need to know »

This hotel has received rave reviews which im struggling to see. ..I've been in many hotels over the years and I'm not very picky but this one for the money isn't worth it. Family of two adults and two kids plus an oap in another room stayed for two nights and had the "special evening meal deal" which I'll describe later on. .Not very special at all... Pro's - Amazing and varied breakfast ...probably one of the best I've ever had. ..lots of different cold and savoury food mixed in with delicious hot food. .brilliant. Large family room on the second floor. Gym. ..excellent and varied equipment which was just like being at home. .. Accompanying pub. ..excellent beer. .ales and local lager etc. .cracking ! All of the above would have pushed the hotel up to a high score however the following things let it down. Cons Room smelt foisty. .massive amount of condensation in the windows and was badly in need of modernisation. TV was at least ten years old and the beds were really uncomfortable and small. Double bed not good enough for a four star hotel. Isolated location. Nothing but a housing estate nearby and kendal too far too walk. Hotel bar was pathetic. ..choice of four beers on draft. .waste of our time going there and there was no atmosphere. The accompanying pub wasn't really a pub. .had seating for about five people near the bar area so it was difficult to have a pint with the family .not fit for families. Food - both in the pub and restaurant was the poorest selection I've ever seen in a restaurant ..awful and not varied in the slightest. The food in the pub was undercooked (kebab starters) and again unless you like chips there was next to nothing to choose from. Very very disappointed!! Renovation work was being carried out near to our room and drilling was continuous during the day during our entire stay. ..plus the workmen were swearing as I heard them whilst waiting for a lift. ..management informed. They shouldn't have put us near this and its unacceptable especially as the two night stay cost us £600! Pool - just a pool and kids are only allowed in at certain times which is terrible. Waste of time having it. All in all the place doesn't deserve its rating ...We should have stayed in a travel lodge or premier Inn and saved £500! Its only got three stars because of the breakfast and gym. .and the fact the lady on reception was a good laugh. .otherwise seriously consider other hotels out of the area as there is very little to do in kendal. ..disappointed!

« Overpriced and just OK »

Stayed for a single night recently for a quick getaway to the lakes. Situated close to the mway (only 6miles or so) and easily accessible to the centre of Kendal. Checkin was smooth, room was well appointed but as bland as a premier inn ... there was a nice view over the valley and gardens this doesn't make up for the comically small room and the balcony was v.small also. I appreciate the 'lake district' premium costs but genuinely don't believe this hotel provides value for money, even on a Diamond rate (no offer of a complimentary upgrade as per Diamond status) it was c.£160 for one night without breakfast. This is greater than a suite in a 4* hotel in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle or a 3* in London for the same night - all of which have their own 'premium' elements. Noise from adjoining rooms was a bit of a surprise as you could even hear the wardrobe doors being opened in the room next to ours ... as well as other 'noises' Shower is almost unusable as it is so small, once the water is on, you have no chance of washing your hair or body as there is no directional nozzle and literally zero space to move away from the water to for this ... options are a frenzy of showergel/shampoo, turn the water off to get washed and then back on to rinse/step out of the shower into the bathroom! CRAZY! I won't stay again and wouldn't recommend anyone else to either - very average indeed (other than cost) and no better than a budget chain anywhere in the world

« Pleasant two night stay »

Stayed here for two nights recently. Sat Nav took us into the Conference Center car park for some reason. Easy to get into, difficult to get out of! Especially in darkness. Check-in was pleasant and the room was spacious and comfortable. The Grounds of the Hotel are stunning but the corridors of the Hotel reminded me of an old seventies Office block but thats just aesthetics. Alexander's Pub Food was very tasty and enjoyable (if a little expensive). In-room Wifi is abysmal, constantly cutting out. It was free, however. I would stay here again if in the area.

    « A truly enjoyable break »

Everything about the hotel was to our satisfaction, pleasant staff, clean and comfortable accommodation, good food and value for money all round. the grounds were a picture and a bonus. A special mention about the staff who were all polite, helpful and above all so cheery.

    « Great Hotel »

The room was very spacious and had an excellent view of the hotel gardens and surrounding area. All areas of the hotel were well maintained and staff were very friendly. The food was very good although it was a little strange that the diffence between the lounge and the restaurant was only the price paid (menus the same/similar). Gym area and pool very good, staff very helpful and polite. Overall would recommend and will visit again.

« Good hotel in pretty grounds set back from the road »

This is a quiet hotel - perhaps a bit of an odd mix of Anonymous Corporate with its own local personality. Pleasant check-in staff and rooms and a reasonable breakfast, though the quality of the ingredients in the Full English could be higher. Kendal has one of the worst one way traffic systems in the country, and is, architecturally, pretty bleak, so if you must visit, this hotel offers a welcome refuge.

« Nice, clean comfortable hotel, with a good restaurant »

I was here for a few days for work and it was great - nice rooms, decent breakfast and a nice pool and gym. The restaurant is also pretty good at night, and the staff all pretty friendly. Will be back.

    « False advertisement »

We booked here so my husband could use the gym and I could take advantage of the pregnancy massage that they advertise. I was told that this could be booked and given my time for my treatment. We went out for the evening and returned to a hand written note saying they couldn't offer me the massage after all. I was offered no other treatment . We wouldn't have booked this hotel if it hadn't advertised a spa with pregnancy treatments. Management made no effort to fix it so left very disappointed.

« Why is my radiator wonky? »

We spent two very nice days here as wedding guests within a larger party. The Castlegate is well appointed with a great restaurant, in particular it serves tremendous breakfasts with Black Pudding to die for. Although a little expensive at the bar and some decor in the corridors could do with an update, (car parking within a short walking distance was a little ellusive during a big Saturday night too)....the only issue I couldn't avoid was.....WHY WAS MY ROOM RADIATOR SO WONKY?

    « Superb service »

I did not stay here but dined with 11 ladies last evening. The quality of the food and the service we received from the young lady in charge of us was second to none. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The staff were very professional the girl in charge knew all our names and addressed as such as we had prebooked in separate names but after taking our orders she knew all our names I was very impressed. The training the staff must receive I can only commend highly. Overall a very lovely evening we will return.

    « needs an update »

I'd say the ground of the hotel were fantastic but the function house, was very drab and bland and the ceiling was slow low my partner was nearly having to duck. The staff were very commendable, particularly shane mason. The drinks are overpriced

« The Green Rooms Spa = pure perfection!!! »

We didn't stay at the hotel, we just booked in our party to use the spa. The Green Rooms Spa although part of the hotel is independent. I would highly recommend that the hotel never let them go!!! Kelly and her team were amazing. From the first time I contacted them, to planing a timetable to fit us all in (there were 16 of us), to the friendly welcome on our arrival. All very professional. The treatment I had was a back, neck and shoulder massage and a facial. It was all amazing. The best treatment I have ever had. This statement was echoed by each member of our party. Nothing was too much trouble, we had to make some last minute changes but Kelly was more than happy to help us out. If you are in the area or staying at the hotel, treat yourself to a treatment of two at The Green Rooms, you will not be disappointed. A big THANK YOU to Kelly and all her team for a fantastic and relaxing time.

    « A family reunion »

About 40 of us stayed for a weekend for a family reunion. The hotel is in a fine position just east and overlooking Kendal away from any traffic noise. Rooms are clean and adequate. Breakfast is very good . Dinner for us all was of a very high standard especially given the numbers. There is an attached pub down some steps for more informal eating with good local real ales. What stood out for me was that the staff were universally welcoming and helpful with all our requests: altering the meal time, finding paracetamol, providing PA system, a big screen for rugby matches and finding extra places at dinner. Very impressive.

« Excellent Wedding Venue and Hotel »

Myself and my new wife booked the Castle Green Hotel for our wedding in late September. The hotel from start to finish were just amazing, nothing was too much trouble and Janine, Christine and the whole team deserve more than 5 stars if I was allowed to!! From our first meeting, Janine our wedding co-ordinator was very patient with our needs and made us feel as if nothing was too much trouble. It was our wedding and we were allowed to do pretty much anything we wanted with the space to make it into our dream wedding. Everything in the build up was so easy and they were a pleasure to deal with, everything was meticulously organised and handed over to Christine, our wedding co-ordinator on the day itself. On the day itself, we couldn't fault a thing. From the reception staff, to the bar staff, to Christine who has the patience of a saint, nothing was too much trouble and everyone was so friendly and helpful. We got married outside and the gazebo and venue were just perfect, exactly how we'd imagined. The food was amazing, we had not one complaint, and everything on the day went off without any problems. We've had so many of our guests tell us that it was the best wedding they've ever been to. The room we had was huge and had beautiful views over the Lake District (although we did have the honeymoon suite so that's expected!!). And the breakfast the next morning topped everything off. Lovely a fresh, hot and a great variety - I love haggis so was happy that was there!!! Overall, we couldn't fault a thing, from start to finish and we are already looking forward to spending our anniversary here next year and hopefully many more times in between.

    « Lovely Location »

To put this review into context I like Best Western hotels and have used them where possible for both business and leisure travel for 15+ years. I honestly feel staff make or break a hotel. The reception staff here were unfriendly and abrupt to the point of rudeness. We were asked on arrival to prepay for extras (The room had been booked and paid for in advance) with the amount to be £50.00. When asked what extras were going to cost us £50 the first item mentioned was our bar bill (we had yet to see the bar) and breakfast. On check out the bill was wrong as reception hadn't checked what we had actually spent and assumed we had eaten there (we hadn't).Reception here do not do greetings/smiling/helpfulness they just ask for money. The one breakfast we had was chaotic so we went elsewhere for the other day The balcony room was very small with one of the tiniest bathrooms I have ever seen. Nice view of the grounds though.
