    « Average »

We stayed at the hotel for one night, and it was pretty average. The room was alright, but air quality was really bad and the room had a funny smell. The bathroom had seen better days. However, we really enjoyed the breakfast.

« Biggest hotel in the region, the 4-stars rating is mostly well deserved, but still room for improvement »

Stayed in the "HOTEL DES NORDENS" from September 28 to October 4 in one of the so called fireplace-suites ("Kamin-Suite") and overall I enjoyed my stay a lot and will come back again! It's a hotel build in the 1950's, but has grown and been renovated continuously over the years. HOTEL DES NORDENS is a 4-star BEST WESTERN hotel, but not (yet) one of the BEST WESTERN PLUS ones. It had been a while (i.e. almost 9 years) since last I stayed in this hotel and I must admit that the new owners (the Danish FLEGGAARD corporation) have achieved a lot of overall improvement since then and (according to hotel director Thomas Baarsøe) will continue to invest and improve in the years to come - bravo! The hotel has 121 rooms / suites and even a large Presidential Suite. Furthermore there's a cosy bar and several conference rooms (in all sizes) and a very large banquet hall. Not all rooms, however, are in the main building, but located in two separate buildings where one is connected to the main building through a loooong beautifully windowed hallway while, in order to reach the other separate building ("Haus am Wald"), you have to leave the lobby of the main building, go outside and walk across the parking lot. As to the "Haus am Wald" building I noticed a mouldy smell in the internal staircase which the hotel might consider taking care of. The hotel itself is situated on a little hill (some 20 meters above sea level) overlooking the Danish/German border region as well as the actual border and is close to beautiful nature on both sides of the border as well as the picturesque German city of Flensburg (approximately 90,000 inhabitants). But the hotel is also close to a large road (leading to/from the border) and thus trafic noise can be heard from some rooms, mainly the ones located on the east side of the hotel. In the hotel an impressive amount of white/grey marble tiles are to be found on floors and walls creating an exclusive atmosphere together with the black leather furniture and dark brown wooden doors and antiquities. In 2016 it's rare to find large hotels using regular keys for room doors and not using electronic key cards ... this might be something the hotel should change in a future renovation and then also use key cards to turn on/off all electricity in ones room ... in this connection a master switch for lights placed directly at the bed would make great sense and add considerably to the in-room comfort! The hotel unfortunately only has uncovered parking lots, but on the other hand there usually is enough of them and (what's best) they are free (i.e. no parking fee is charged)! Arriving with a lot of luggage is no problem as the lobby has 2 luggage carts ready to handle this and the reception is manned 24/7. As I said not all rooms have yet been renovated and my fireplace-suite (308) was one of the rooms only partly renovated (i.e. a fine new bath / toilet area). The rest of my room really needs a make over (which it will soon have), but apart from that it was nice, quiet and spacey with separate room for luggage and clothes plus extra room for guest/kids with own flat screen tv and a large flatscreen tv in the main room, etc. Furthermore there was a nice working desk, water boiler, comfy large bed, chairs and table. Plus the room had a fine balcony with a great view over the outdoor heated pool area and small park / large trees! It would have been icing on the cake with heated floor in the bath room and if you could hear/control the TV's sound over a speaker there! Also the noise insulation of the door to the hallway could be better. I personally also missed a safe and a mini bar / fridge in my room and I don't think any of the other rooms of the hotel has any mini-bar fridge!? Talking about mini-bar it would be a nice feature/service (if the hotel does not want mini-bars / fridges in room) that they consider copying the Danish SCANDIC Hotels where the mini-bar area is moved to the reception/lobby (with a wider choice of foods, snacks, fruits, drinks) from where you take whatever you need up to your room - paying cash/card or putting it on your room. My room (suite) had ground-to-floor sunlight-blocking curtains, BUT they were not really effective blocking out the sun light ... a better/darker fabric is needed to male them work as supposed. Personally (if I was hotel management at HOTEL DES NORDENS) I would change the CFL light bulbs (in room and elsewhere in hotel) to LED soon also because CFLs radiate EMF quite a lot and are not very environmentally friendly (some still containing mercury)! The choice of TV-channels in the room was quite overwhelming (however only one in Danish) and it was somewhat difficult to find TV-channels that could actually be watched and were not coded / scrambled. It would be a great service if NETFLIX or SKY would be added for free guest use. There is no air conditioning in the rooms, but windows can be opened to create good air flow! The hotel offers room service, but I did not try that ... it closes, however, together with the restaurant which is at 22:00h (10 PM). I did eat several times at the hotel's beautiful and cosy restaurant "Rotisserie" and the meals were really of high standard and the service of waiters very service-minded and quick. Sometimes, however, it is hard getting a table without reservation as the restaurant may be a little small compared to the hotel holding 121 rooms. Nonetheless the staff in the reception and restaurant and bar was always smiling, friendly, attentive and helpful. I would like to point out that the hotel has a nice indoor and outdoor pool area called "AQUA POINT" that is heated all year round combined with a nice spacey outdoor sauna plus a "under construction" indoor sauna area (should be finished this year still). Here you also find a decent fitness area and you can book massages and other wellness therapies. I can recommend the HOTEL DES NORDENS already now and I'm sure it will continue to become even better within the near future!

« Great spa hotel with bizarre service »

We stayed here overnight on our European road trip. It was perfect for the purpose; the family room was spacious with 2 separate rooms and the pool area was great after a long day in the car. Breakfast was excellent, and even with the kids we didn't have to stop for hours for lunch. The only negative was the bizarre and even rude service at the reception and the restaurant. The evening dinner took a long while to arrive once we had already waited quite a while to be served.... But the food was good quality.

« Great place to throw a party »

We chose to celebrate my 50th birthday at the hotel with the possibility for the guests to book a room for the night. From the time we started booking the location to the actual party, everything was perfect. The ballroom was great, as well as the table set-up. The food was excellent. The staff was outstanding. The indoor/outdoor heated pool was great. Special thanks to head waiter Klaus and to our Convention Manager, Edel von Appen for making my birthday memorable.

    « Never again ! »

A run down large hotel probably built in the 1970s. We were given a room on the ground floor with entrance to the room directly from the pavement. The room was located right on a large car park. No fridge/minibar, no AC. A fan was blowing the air from the carpark straight into the room. Except for the bartender the service in the reseption and the restaurant was slow, - uninterested staff.

    « A nice place with a good location »

My family and I had been travelling frol Croatia towards Norway for 2 days. After 14 hours in a car this hotel was a nice welcome! We stayed in the suites on the top level and they were fantastic. Big, great balcony and so fresh. It felt very welcoming and had everything and then some. The rooms had the x-factor to put it in easy terms. Now, the parking option was perfect, it was easy to find and liked the fact that it had a cheap and big supermaked close. We also ate dinner from the ala carte menu, and was a bit let down when items where missing, and out of stock, but the meal it self was great. The staff was friendly enough, but could do with some more smiling. Over all the dining experience was good. The breakfast was very good and offered a wide varity of foods. It was also nice to see that the options for allergic people was front and center. Wifi was good, and over all everything was good, so why no top mark? Well, the whole location with seperate buildings is not to my liking and I wished there was a connection between them, but hey...you cant have everything.

« I would not recommend this hotel »

Quite noisy due to traffic even if we asked for a quite room. Building must be very old. Mold in the bathroom and smell of fungus in the whole building. Payed 200 Euro for a dobbelroom. Way too expensive for what you get. I cannot understand that this hotel has 4 stars.

« Very good value for money »

Hotel des Nordens is a typical German middle class hotel, it is also not new, but it is very good value for money. The rooms are surprisingly large and well equipped, there is a large and attractive swimming pool and in general very good facilities. They serve good food and the staff seems to be genuinely friendly and service minded. If you combine this with the attractive offers that the hotel has for various packages you get the ideal place for a long weekend with or without kids.

« Great hotel as base for exploring Flensburg and Sønderjylland »

We have stayed at Hotel Des Nordens several times (deals) - it has always been a pleasure. Very nice and service minded staff in reception, restaurant and bar that makes you feel welcome. The rooms are very nice, clean and everything works. Lots of space for your luggage and things in the closets and bathroom. A shower instead of the bathtub would however be nice. Splendid food (not gourmet) and reasonable prices and a very nice breakfast buffet with lots of choices. And then there is the fantastic big swimming pool ? SPA etc. Great hotel as base if you want to explore Sønderjylland and the Flensburg area (Schleswig Holstein)!

    « Fine hotel »

I was here for three days. Hotel was almost full so I was in the room for disabled people. Room was clean and cosy. But nothing extra. I know there are much better rooms. Breakfast was ok. Nothing special but ok. It was bit surprise that lot of personal is not speaking English. Just german and danish.

« Smokefree hotel for smokers »

All rooms at Hotel des Nordens (I think) has a balcony with an ashtray. The staff is very professionel and know how to make you feel good. For dinner we had the three course menu of the day, and it was well prepared and very delicious. The breakfasttable is overwhelming. We'll be back!

« Nice hotel to stay overnignt. »

Good family hotel. We have been visiting this hotel a number of times during the past 9 years. Coming from Copenhagen and going to do some shopping in Flensburg, this is a perfect place to stay overnight. Many times we have also enjoyed to have a glass of water, this is for free, from the hotels own housewell. Service and food is good, and we love the swimming pool indoor as the outdoor. It is brilliant that it is possible to swim between the two pools AND it is great that the water is heated year round.

« Good location for shopping »

This was our second visit to the hotel with our kids. Nice pool area. You can swim outside in the heated pool, although it is freezing outside. It is also possible to go skating. Good shopping possibilities in Flensborg and Neumünster (1 hour by car).

    « Hotel des Nordens - A perfect hotel »

We stayed at the hotel for one night last week. We have been there more than 5 times, and we are always satisfied. The rooms are well furnished, and the beds are comfortable. We always get a warm and friendly welcome at the reception. The restaurant provide a splendid dinner and breakfast. We will surely book a stay at Hotel des Nordens again.

    « Definitely worth a visit »

Hotel des Nordens is more than it appears to be! The location along Highway 200 in Northern-most Germany, just South of the little, Danish border-town of Kruså is perhaps less than ideal for this pearl of a hotel. We visited this place a number of years ago, so I can say with certainty that they have both modernized and improved the property. There is a fine Aqua facility with both indoor and large outdoor pool, jazucci, sauna (with and without bathing suit), and message. There is a nearby ice-skating rink that can be used by the hotel guests. The restaurant is excellent, and if they are given advanced notice, they can provide gluten-free buns. The people at the reception desk at friendly and efficient. We stayed only one night, but plan to return sometime soon with family members.

« Ok but not great »

Stayed in one of the rooms in the building opposite reception - good seating area for 4 in each room. Beds are pretty comfy. Shame they haven't given the place a lick of paint and updated because the bathroom and walls brings down the otherwise fresh beds and seating. Very bad soundproofing though so perhaps bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. The restaurant in the hotel was ok in regards to food and ambience, but we had not pre-booked dinner which was clearly a mistake. (You can include a 3 course meal - not sure the salmon was great though - I saw a lot of leftovers on tables). We were seated after having to wait for close to 5 minutes before someone bothered to look our way - we had reserved a table at the suggestion of reception but it was not crazy busy. After being seated and given menues it took 20 minutes before anyone approached us to take orders. We were given some bread which was lucky - it took a further 40 mins for the food to arrive. The peoper sauce which came with the meat was delivered to the table 5 mins after the food arrived - not great. I would stay at the hotel again but not eat in the restaurant. House red wine was good though!

    « Overnight stay »

We came across this hotel when googling to find somewhere to break up a long road trip. The hotel is 300m south of the border with Denmark and staff told us it was quite unusual to have English speaking guests. The hotel was much better than expected apart from a strange layout where we had to walk through an extremely long glassed in corridor to get from our room to the dining area. Our room was fine for our one night stay and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. We had dinner in the very formal dining room and the waiter went out of his way to ensure our vegetarian diet was catered for on the meat only menu. There was a good spread for breakfast also. We did not use the pool area so can not comment on that. Wi-fi was free and worked well.

« Be prepared to pay extra for even a short swim in cold water »

We have visited this hotel many times and so has frieds hand family. We always come for spme shopping and to use the highly marketed swimming pool and saunas. the feature is that it supposedly should be approx 30 degrees hot all year long outside and inside. This is history. The water is now more close to 20 degrees. We were warned about this before arriving this time, but we wanted to give it a shot. Unfortunatedly it is correct - the water is nowhere close to 30 degrees at any time during our 3 day stay. Other guests confirmed this as well. Note that the hotel still advertise with 30 degrees. Completely not true and misleading. Even worse: The hotel changed policy about the use. If you do not buy a holiday package, you will have to pay 5 euro to use the swimming poo per person per day! This is absolutely crazy. We bought the most expensive room with a so-called VIP package (to my knowledge only consisting of a single bottle of water per day!) - and yet still we were asked for 5 euro per day per person! This is not mentioned on the webpage. Yes, it is per day and you can return the same day, but what if (like we) you just want a short swim before dinner? As I complained while checking out the receptionist went to the manager (who not even found the time to confront me directly) and returned with an even more strange explanation: Some had complained to pay for a service they did not use. Funny, since when has any swimming pool on a hotel been charged for? Have in mind that any other services like massage etc. always have been a separate service. No, the fact is that if you buy their packages, you will have to eat their menu and buy their wine (not included). This is a much better business. We wanted to eat outside the hotel - and became degraded guests. We were told that it was alright *this* time. Well, thanks, but there will not be any next time. The hotel is by itself like 30-40% more expensive than others so there is plenty of possibilities to find another and even find the money for entrance in Foerdeland Terme guaranteeing 32 degrees water and more features.

    « DON'T STAY HERE! »

Like many others here I was totally fooled by the nice pictures! Don't be fooled. The hotel room was appalling. I took photos of no less than 7 different REALLY dirty areas in our room. Fixtures falling of walls etc etc. The pool was a total let down. Cold, in some areas and boiling water (yes boiling) coming out of some vents in the kiddies pool. So hot I couldn't put my hand it! The whole place needs a good clean. Totally not worth the €200 per night - which by the way ((( doesn't inc the use of the pool area))) Be warned. If I could go back in time I would avoid this place like the plague.

« Great hotel..... Some years ago. »

Like others have stated, nice restaurant and reception. They did some construction work on the second part of the hotel when we arrived in June, but was not bothered with noise or anything like that. Sadly we didn't try the pool area, so I can't review that part of the hotel. I would assume that it's hard to run a hotel in this area now that the roads has been expanded and put far outside the city. We got a large room with nice beds. Patio outside with a view on the forest. You could tell it has been some years since last makeover, but it was tidy and clean when we arrived and that's what it's all about for me. I would prefer a shower instead of standing in a bath tub with a curtain though. Wifi was included. The breakfast was served in the restaurant and did not lack of anything in my opinion. The food was very good indeed.

    « Only just... »

We had a very short stay here as part of a drive to Spain. The room was quite nice, but for summer season its not great as there is no AC and no fan. The pool is great, a bit strange it has to be paid for by guests though. Staff friendly enough and offered coffee as we left the hotel at 3 am. Nice touch!
