« Nice Place & Away From Downtown »

We stayed here for a wedding & guests had pretty much a whole floor. The rooms were large clean & quiet. The meal at the wedding was excellent, turkey with all the trimmings, plus dessert that was to die for. The waiters at the meal were fine, but front desk ladies were the crankiest we've seen in a while. People were trying to check in to get dressed for the wedding, wouldn't let them til 3, some had to sit in the lobby because they came from outside the city, even some of the bridesmaids! Breakfast buffet was included, which was pretty good, but still the staff wouldn't give you a smile or good morning. Maybe they're friendlier with tourists in the summer, lets hope.

« Great Birthday Stay at Chocolate Hotel »

We had a great time at chocolate hotel for my birthday and our anniversary. The King room in the tower facing the lake was excellent. Thank you to Michelle W for the great weekend and special touches!! I would definitely recommend this hotel for their tower rooms facing the lake. As for the other rooms, you should read the reviews and make your decision. From what I hear, you should book Tower Rooms facing the lake.

    « Comfortable family stay »

This hotel is the only one in Halifax that allows large dogs. Although it is a bit of a challenge to find, the hotel is very comfortable and offers free breakfast. If one is not used to the Armdale Rotary, it can be a challenge to find this hotel. Once navigated, the hotel is easy to find and convenient for shopping.

« My Go To Place »

My husband and myself and family have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and keep going back because its central for us to travel around for shopping, movies, walking and admiring the beautiful scenery and , of course, the hotel. Staff are friendly and try to accommodate your every wish. Rooms are clean and beds are very comfortable. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

« Ideal Location for Shopping »

We recently stayed at the Best Western Chocolate late as a last minute shopping trip. The location is ideal, minutes away from the Halifax Shopping Center and Bayers Lake. Our room included breakfast which was excellent. Even though it was a continental breakfast, the chef was very accommodating to my husbands milk allergy and made him his own scrambled eggs. It's the little things that go along way!

« The View is AMAZING. »

We went for my birthday, the hotel is located in an amazing picturesque part of Halifax, The view of chocolate lake from our room was amazing (see pictures). Only 2 minor negative comments - 1) Check the Refrigerator before You put any food in there, Ours was not working and my food got spoilt and #2) MOST IMPORTANT - Upgrade your GPS when heading TO the property, we couldn't find it so we had to MacGyver it and substitute the address to fool the satellites.....Oh also Parking is a challenge to get to on a busy night...Otherwise the property and staff are amazing, the complimentary breakfast is nothing to brag about, but then it's a hotel...Would definitely stay again.

    « won't stay again »

stayed here for four days in November. Check-in was fine but after that my stay was really sub-standard. The suite was old and musty and I tripped over the lumpy carpeting more than once. The hotel has very thin walls and was very very noisy. I could not order breakfast even though the buffet food was gone. I could not charge my meals to my room. I could not get food during my break at 3:00 pm. The front desk staff left me standing with an issue with my room key for more than 10 minutes before they called a staff from out back to help. Room service showed up at 8:45 am and didn't return when I told them it was too early. I stay in hotels more than 50 nights a year and I always look for a Best Western. Unfortunately neither my experience, nor the management response to my experience would encourage me to return to this one.

    « Quiet, convenient location »

Nothing bad to say about this hotel. Close to downtown Halifax. There is a Needs store right next door, which came in very handy a couple of times. We were in the city for medical appointments and the hotel provided us with a special rate for that reason. Would recommend to anyone.

    « Nice hotel »

Staff very helpful and courteous. Restaurant is very good and staff very helpful. Not recognized as diamond members. Our suite is spacious and nice. Out of town a bit so have to drive to see sights and shop. Older hotel but clean and refreshed. I would stay again.

    « Wonderful stay »

Stayed there for two nights and requested a certain area of the hotel, our request was met with no problems . We checked in early with no problems as we were going to be busy for the day and didnt want to wait till evening to check in. Accommodations were great.

« Fantastic staff and a great property »

Now this place understands customer service! upgraded room upon arrival smiling staff. Now you have to consider that this is an older property but has had an extensive renovation. But what was nice to see was maintenance staff working away to fix the minor issues even on the weekend. Great pool fantastic buffet breakfast great staff!

« Good luck getting to sleep! »

I've always liked the layout, pool and hot tub and breakfast in this hotel, although it is very noisy with paper thin walls. Overall experience is definitely affected if they have an event in progress or if you have a loud neighbour. Last time I stayed I had a King bed and it was incredibly comfortable, however the Queen beds we slept in this time were horrendous. Some soundproofing and new mattresses needed to get through the night relaxed.

« Good Value, Good Location »

Best Western Hotels are a known quality. Pretty much standardized across their chain, you get consistency in service, cleanliness and value. Best Western Plus at Chocolate Lake is outside the downtown core of Halifax, but only a short 10 minute drive to reach the hub of the city and the amazing waterfront. Rooms in the back have a great view of the lake itself, and you can either watch the early risers out for their morning swim from docks and homes surrounding the lake, or join them by walking out the back door of the hotel. We choice this location for two reasons; it was much more reasonably priced than hotels in the downtown core, and it was a short, easy drive to get downtown. We stayed here at the start of our maritime tour for three days as we explored the Halifax region, and again for one night after wrapping up our two week trek through Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and parts of New Brunswick and Quebec. They offer the usual amenities, free breakfast, free Wi-Fi and they also have a self service laundry, which is great when you're on a two week road trip.

« Chocolate Lake, A wonderful place to stay. »

Our many trips to Chocolate Lake Best Western have always been something to look forward to. We enjoy the pleasant, helpful staff throughout the hotel. The on site restaurant with its view of Chocolate Lake is a pleasant spot to enjoy a quick or leisurely meal. Staff throughout the hotel are very courteous, helpful and respectful. When in Halifax it has become our favorite place to stay.

« Looking for another place for remainder of Halifax visit »

I just checked in tonight & I'm online looking for another hotel. There is a smell (cleaner? Mold?) in the room that is kicking in my asthma & allergies. The bathroom was not clean - toothpaste or something all over sink, dirt in tub. I had to clean the bathroom. (Thank goodness I had Clorox wipes in car. ) Room is worn. Called front desk & they did nothing. Can't wait to leave.

« Very lovely hotel that makes you wish you could stay longer »

The hotel was very lovely and was situated on a quaint little lake. The rooms were very nice and the staff helpful and kind. The breakfast was hot and delicious and overlooked the lake. The hotel was also nicely situated on the way to Peggy's cove on the outskirts of Halifax and was still only 10 min to downtown and maybe 30 min from the airport. We would have loved to stay longer

    5
    « Wow »

Although this hotel is tall and large, it has an intimate feel never seeming crowded. The lobby, elevator and room were beautiful. The breakfast was a huge buffet with views of the lake. The pool, although cold, and the hot tub are wonderful amenities. The pool warns of a slippery deck. I don't understand why they didn't put down a mat. Although away from downtown Halifax, it was a convenient location for visiting the area.

    « Very comfortable stay! »

Lovely large room with view of lake. Well equipped, spotlessly clean. Very friendly reception staff. The hotel offered very good value for money, not compromising on facilities. Hot breakfast choice excellent.

    « Best hot breakfast »

Beds were ok - rooms were spacious - hotel itself was very nice - games room was a huge hit with the kids! The shining part of our stay was the fantastic hot free breakfast the next morning - it was so delicious! Service was awesome too - lots of friendly workers here. My son Finley left his ipad in the room and we've not heard back from them yet (room 305 - we stayed Oct 27th and checked out Oct 28th) but I confident they will get back to us soon. Great spot!

    « great stay »

Great pace to stay , no complaints at all....nice view of the lake ,great breakfast , clean and comfortable a little bit out of the way for shopping .But the quietness and scenery of the lake view makes up for that Very friendly staff......we would definitely stay here again.....

    « Great stay »

Service was great, clean, parking was good, totally satisfied for a business trip. I will go back there anytime.Too bad I could not take advantage of the terrace and grounds.Looks like a nice place to get away so close to the city

    4
    « Ok but parking a issue. »

Stayed there on a Saturday night with a wedding going on. Staff friendly and helpful once I found a place to park. In all fairness there was a wedding so that would account for the parking lot being crowded. Room was adequate and clean with WiFi easily accessible. Bathroom a little cramped but considering the age of the place satisfactory. Reasonably quiet and free of road noise again considering the wedding downstairs, never heard a sound. Would we stay again, probably although there are many choices.

« Rooms are dated and a very weird practice when ordering food for the room »

We stayed here for an early August wedding, and the location was great as it was close to the wedding venue. The rooms need some upgrading, they are dated; I agree with another reviewer that a more thorough cleaning is needed, there is dust in the corners, under the bed, and around the legs of furniture. We were rushed to get to the wedding, and figured out from the guest information that you could order food from the hotel menu, pick it up, and bring it to the room to save time. This was a great fit for our needs, so I went down to get the food at the time I was told (without a credit card) and was informed that even though we ordered from the room and even though we were staying in the hotel (and I had the room key), the food couldn't be charged to the room - if I had eaten in the dining room, I could have charged it to the room mind you. No one was able to explain the rationale to me (which didn't make me happy either), although I am confident there is a reason for this practice. Likely something happened with a previous payment that now means other guests are disadvantaged (like keeping all the class in for recess when one child misbehaves ...). There are lots of other places to stay in the city, so I am unlikely to revisit this Best Western.

    « could be cleaner »

price was fine. service was amazing. beds were comfortable. I just thought the floor did not look like it had been vacuumed thoroughly. There was dust build up on the carpeting along the walls. It also looked like dead mosquito remains were on the ceiling. There was a receipt for something on the floor behind the tv that belonged to a previous guest. I realy wish the tv worked properly....or should I say the system used for that model tv. No tv menu was available. You had to scroll up or down the channels one by one. They took the time to laminate a notice that this was an issue? I say either get a new provider for the tv service, or get compatible tv's.

« Great Venue for Conferences »

My company hosted a brand training conference last evening. We were blown away by the amazing service provided by the staff. They were very polite and attentive to all of our needs. The room was spacious, clean and set up accordingly. The catering was served promptly and was very delicious. I highly recommend this hotel as a venue for conferences & business meetings. Also, the restaurant is fabulous. We ate breakfast, lunch & supper and the food was phenomenal ??

    « Stayed here Twice »

We stayed here for a couple of nights when we fist arrived in Halifax. The room was a nice size. Lots of room for suitcases etc. There was only a single bar of soap in the room when we arrived. We called the desk to let them know. When we got back from dinner there was extra soap in the bathroom as well as a little pile on a table in the bedroom. People at the desk here were polite and efficient. The breakfast was a bit of a disappointment. Not as much variety as I had expected and when we arrived it must have been after a rush as 3 out of 4 hot items were almost empty and it took awhile before anyone seemed to notice and fill them back up. The second time we stayed was after our tour of Nova Scotia before were flew out. This time we ended up in a "tower" room. These rooms are very small, not much room for a couple with luggage. My suggestion here would be NOT to stay in the tower if possible. Free wifi, but that is pretty much standard now isn't it? Parking here is a bit of a challenge as well. Not a lot of spaces out front.

    « Lovely Luxury Hotel »

This hotel is situated on the edge of Halifax city.Has plenty of parking and beautiful amenities,Nice to have a swimming pool if one is travelling for several weeks.Unfortunately they had only room for us for one night. You can see the lake from your room.Small breakfast but OK.

    « Not Impressed »

Hotel is somewhat off the beaten path, the rooms need upgrading they are starting to look worn out. After initial swapping of credit card/keys staff kept their eyes down - I wondered in fear of us asking them to do something for us. The bedroom of our suite was small but the beds were comfy, the living room/kitchenette area was beyond tiny. We had a lovely view of the house next door and the parking lot after we were bumped from our original room overlooking the lake as a bride told the hotel she wanted some of her family to be in that room. Not wanting to freak out bridezilla we agreed (should have looked at the other room first - my mistake) the second room was not what we had booked and we were cramped in it. Breakfast was good, staff there wonderful, maybe they should teach the staff at the front desk its ok to look in peoples eyes. Love the area will go again but will not stay at Best Western unless they up their game.

    « fanfastic »

The meal in the restaurant was fantastic, Love the hot tub but the pool was too cold The room was very comfortable but bed was harder than we are use to .Best breakfast of all the hotels. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location was convenient for all that we wanted to do .

    « Halifax vacation »

Most excellent hotel. Would highly recommend. Excellent full breakfast and all the staff were friendly and efficient. Parking lot was usually almost full which means we were not the only ones enjoying it.

    « Halifax Visit »

Excellent place to stay. Would not hesitate to stay on the premise again. Very close to the downtown Halifax. We had a great view of the lake from our lake view room. Strongly recommend lake view rooms.

« Best place to stay in Halifax »

Great hotel, service and great location. Not downtown, but 10 minutes by car to city centre. Location great because its in quiet area by a nice lake, which is still in Halifax but feels country. We stayed for 4 nights, rooms was wonderful, we upgraded to 2 queen size bedroom (just 2 of us) for much more roomy feel. Very clean our room as the whole hotel very accommodating, friendly staff. Great pool area and hot tub, game room for kids and excersie room if you want to use those. The breakfast was one of the best. What you normally get a most hotels the standard things like juices, fresh fruit, breads and muffins, yogurts PLUS four different hot entries like scrambled eggs, sausages, french toast, etc. This is part of their restaurant, has a lot of seating area including an outside deck towards the lake. We sat outside watching sunrise - so relaxing. Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner which you pay for, we ate downtown, so can't say. Nice bar there also for evening drinks. From this hotel it's 30 minutes drive by car to Peggy's Cove. (We rented a car). Hotel was recommended by our travel agent, so glad we took her advice! Will stay again in a heartbeat.

« If we would have only known »

Unfortunately our stay was not one of the better ones at a Best Western Plus. The room was only "ok" . The cleanliness could have been better. We found a condom in the room which was not appealing at all. The staff seemed unconcerned and made no effort to apologize. Then the second night asked for extra coffee and was told no. They had none? Really? Unfortunately I would have expected better from Best Western. We've always had great rooms before.

    5
    « Excellent Hotel! »

Clean, friendly staff, great hot breakfast buffet. Lovely poo areal, and the kids love the games room. We stayed last New Years Eve, and there was a different selection of games this time. Many pinball machines, which they love. Bring quarters and loonies, some of the new machines take loonies, but it gives you a couple of credits, not just one turn. Great internet connection, great location overall. We are repeat guests. See you New Years Eve!

    3
« Clean room, fresh breakfast, but the Front Desk could use a little smile »

We were accommodated in a lovely pet room & was even given a courtesy late check-out. The Housekeeper who helped us get into the room was really nice and even the Breakfast Staff were very accommodating & efficient. Comfy beds with fluffy pillows make up for a good night's sleep. :-) Their Front Desk Staff could use a little smile & foster a warm ambience, though. At first, I thought I was just being stereotyped (because I'm not a local Canadian), but even my partner (who's from NB) experienced the same ordeal. Maybe we caught them on a bad day. (I would have let this pass easily if my partner didn't hear the Front Desk comment about him, but he did, and we're both wondering if we did something wrong to the staff. Anyway, that's just it.)

    4
    « A bit expensive »

I found price is expensive vs the room type offered. I stayed in a suite junior in Laval for this price. I absolutely loved the restaurant when I had my breakfast. It is a cozy, natural looking place.

    4
    « One Night »

Because of a late arrival to Halifax we decided to spend the first night of our maritime vacation at the BW Chocolate Lake. This is a nice hotel nothing spectacular except it's location on Chocolate Lake. Clean room with all the amenities, we had a quiet restful night. The included buffet breakfast was very good and included everything you could want for breakfast. We would stay here again.

    4
« Not easy to get to rooms. »

The hotel is nice, but appears to have been built at different times. To get to our room, we had to take a luggage cart through a long, narrow, uphill hall to get to an elevator. When we exited the elevator, we had to get the luggage cart through more narrow, angled halls only to find that the hall outside of our room had four stairs going down to the hall. That meant that we had to unload the cart and carry everything down the hall to our room. Not an easy job. The room was nice, clean and overlooked the water.

    « Super friendly & clean! »

We travelled in this week for meetings. I ended up booking last minute, so of course could not find anything available in Dartmouth where the meetings were held so ended up booking a Queen room here instead. I was definitely impressed for the most part. Sure the hotel was out of our way but it is located pretty close to loads of venues that can be found on Quinpool. When checking in their staff was insanely helpful and friendly, even giving us directions to the place the meeting would be held. Lobby is beautiful! We entered our room and were pretty impressed, even though I had booked late and ended up with a basic queen room we had a small kitchenette in room. The room we were in was laid out like pretty much every other hotel room we've ever stayed in, which was fine. Pool, hot tub, gym & arcade area are awesome, and CLEAN, just like the rest of the place! I cannot stress enough that this place was pretty much spotless! We were also pretty impressed by the breakfast that is served in the restaurant each morning, they had an awesome selection to choose from! They also have a sign in the lobby that tells you which times are busiest for breakfast. If you're in for business, or don't have lots of time to spare I recommend hitting up the breakfast bar early in the morning between 6:30-7:30! We sadly didn't have view of the lake from our room, however we did spend some time outside in the evenings sitting by the lake, which is beautiful! We even managed to feed a bunch of ducks that were out there one night. I also loved the fact that housekeeping was friendly and helpful as well! We stayed 2 nights and I was easily able to opt for just having clean towels instead of a full clean of our room! My only issue was the bed, oh lord we are used to a plush, king sized bed and I felt as though I was sleeping on a brick haha! I'm not sure if all of their beds are like this, as I said I booked late and took what I could get. For people who like a firm mattress I am sure they would be in heaven, but for myself it was a little too hard for a good nights sleep!

    « Freshly cooked breakfasts »

We try to stay at the best Western Hotels as they are consistent in service and amenities. Chocolate Lake Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia was therefore no surprise in its welcome, décore and amenities. What I do suggest is that they amend their directions to the hotel and add that at the bottom of the 0 Exit they say stay to the right at the T-junction which becomes Joseph Howe Road, no street signs could be seen. Continue to the Armdale Rotary and take the first on right. Eventually after much driving around we found the hotel and were welcomed warmly. Unfortunately there is little space to unload luggage and to check-in. Parking available on the lower level. We were welcomed nicely. The room was a quite a bit smaller than we are used to at Best Westerns but for 1 night it was okay. Mostly twin rooms for $10+ per night are on the view side of the hotel. We had a lovely meal in the dining room (cannot charge lunch or dinner on your hotel account); very good seafood chowder and beer battered fish and chips, very popular. The fish was good but the French fries were just warm and a little soft, have been overcooked too. The wine we had was Nova Scotian. Service was quite good. Breakfast the next morning, included, was a surprise as the eggs had been freshly scrambled, the sausage patties gluten free, and a surprise, baked beans were on the menu. Other usual items. All in all a good stay.

    « Nice location »

The hotel isn't too close to the riverwalk but is on a lovely lake. It earns the Plus designation. The restaurant breakfast, included, was very good and the dinner menu also good. Sauteed haddock was excellent.

    4
« Great place BUT "Plus" what? »

Checking into this hotel is kind of odd to be honest. There are no temporary spots for people to be able to pull into so when the front lot is full you have to park somewhere else and walk to the lobby. If you were to park at the actual entrance you would be blocking the lane for everyone. I'm surprised the fire department hasn't done anything about it. We had a great view of the lake but it felt like we were staying in a drive-up motor lodge instead of a Best Western Plus. Maybe if you get a room in the tower it wouldn't feel like that. The staff were very friendly, the continental breakfast was quite extensive and the hotel itself was in a great location to get to pretty much everything in Halifax. It was a nice stay and hotel but it did not feel like a Best Western Plus to me.

    5
« You could'nt ask for more with such a little money »

We are a retired couple vacationing in Nova Scotia. This hotel was great. Large, clean room with all the amenities - micro, fridge, TV, Wi-Fi. There was a small kitchenette (with) sink and faucet. A small amount of cooking supplies, but not any plates, glasses, or silverware. We had a Queen bed. There was a table and 2 chairs. Loved the down comforter. Dinner in the hotels dining room was delicious as was the breakfast buffet. Hotel has views of the lake, but not for swimming. There was also an inside pool and exercise room.

    « Reservation mix up/NoShower »

Second time I book this hotel and they mix up the dates. This time was the Kicker as had just arrived from a 12hr drive fro Ottawa. They offered me a room as everything else in the city was book but then realized that I had no shower and was addressed to shower in the pool area. Last time I stay here and I don't recommend that you do either.

« The Staff are AMAZING**Do yourself a favor and BOOK HERE!!!!! »

My wife and children stayed at this hotel while I was in hospital having surgery. I did stay with them for a few nights before I went into the hospital and one night after being discharged from the hospital late in the afternoon. Let me just say this, THE STAFF ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have stayed here several times before while I have been comig back and forth to Halifax for my surgery consults and multiple surgeries. The hotel itself is very clean and spacious. They have a lot to offer here as well like a pool, hot tub, Arcade/Games Room, Restaurant, wifi and so on. They also have a convenience store and Subway right next door which is really handy. The best thing too, is that they have a wonderful Hot and Cold Breakfast which is INCLUDED with your stay. It has all kinds of items on it as well from scrambled eggs, hash browns, meat to toast, bakery goods, bagels, yogurt and so on, really awesome. So, the big thing here is, the STAFF. They are truly amazing and very thoughtful. They treat you like a friend and always interested in what is going on with you. When the staff found out that I was being discharged from the hospital and we had decided to stay the night instead of travel home, they all came together to start making arrangements for my arrival back to my families room. They wanted to make sure I was as comfortable as could be. They didn't have any cots available and wanted to make sure I was in my bed alone without one of our children (I had back surgery and my kids always move and kick in their sleep) so they asked if it would be acceptable for them to bring in multiple duvets and comforters to make my son a bed on the floor so he could be comfortable and I could have the bed to myself. They also had staff come back to our room to change the bedding on my bed and thoroughly clean the room again (this was at the end of the day for cleaning staff and they had already cleaned our room once that day). They also brought extra pillows for myself. They offered to make arrangements for our dog if we wnated. They had even offered to put us in a bigger room but we decided with everything we had and being one night that we were ok where we were. From the moment they found out I was coming back, we became their first and main priority between the front desk staff, supervisor and cleaning staff. My wife said that they dropped what they were doing and made her, myself and our children their first and only priorty, very touching to be honest. To top it off, the front desk staff called when I returned and welcomed me back and then called later to check in on us. It truly was moving and appreciated to have them do so much and offer so much. They even offered to send someone to pick me up at the hospital and have someone look after my bags and assist me getting into the room. This truly is the amazing service that you get from the staff at the Best Western Chocolate Lake. If you are looking for a place to stay in Halifax for any reason, choose The Best Western Chocolate Lake as you will not be disappointed. Thank you so much to all the staff.

Hands down. Highly rated hotel with excellent staff that provides an outstanding breakfast, comfortable beds home away from home. The view from my window was pleasing. Will be checking in again next year. Thank you

« good hotel for price »

Good hotel. Nice view of lake we were in 8th floor. Rooms clean, free Wi-Fi and comfortable beds. Breakfast good with choice of hot or cold menu. Somewhat hard to find due to curves and hills on road.

    « Nice Clean Rooms »

We stayed one night at this hotel and were very pleased with how clean it was. So many hotels have grime around the bathroom baseboards......not the case here. The bed was comfortable and as an added bonus, the window opened allowing us to have fresh air overnight. We needed to open the window as the room had been sprayed with some sort of scent that we found unpleasant. There was coffee making equipment and a mini fridge. The hotel is located in a residential area next to a well used lake. We saw folks canoeing and swimming that evening...quite an attractive scene. We had their included breakfast and it was very good. They offered hot and cold items on their buffet and they kept it well stocked. You could eat out on the patio overlooking the lake or inside. There was only one problem that we encountered and that was with patio access. You have to step out on a big concrete step and then step down from that. I have very sore knees and found that difficult to manage. Installation of a rail would help alleviate the difficulty with access. We noted that young families with strollers had problems with the steps too.

« Close to city, feels like a cottage »

I like Best Westerns, and this one did not change that one bit. Right on the lake, yes you can swim, and clean rooms with loads of amenities. Pool/hot tub/arcade/breakfast we did it all. The really great part was the proximity to downtown, so easy to get to with a very short drive. Price was right as well. Loved the old fashioned pinball machines and photo booth! Only downside, very busy with wedding - parking all gone by time we got to hotel a few nights, and breakfast lines HUGE. We ended up going really early which isn't what you want on vacation however the patio seating made up for it.

« Nice location and great restaurant! »

We enjoyed our stay here. It was clean and comfortable. The price included a hot breakfast with lots of choices. We also had lunch and dinner at the restaurant and found the food to be very good. The lake view is beautiful. We found the pool a little on the cold side and the hot tub a little too hot but it might just have been us. We would definitely stay here again.

« Lovely hotel but did not honour reservation »

I travel about 3 weeks a month for work and stay in many, many hotels. This Best Western is very nice and the original room they gave me was top third of all Best Westerns. What happened the 1st morning of my 3 day stay is why I have given them such a poor rating. I was working in my room and the maid knocked to service it - although I had a do not disturb sign. I said "no need" today I am fine. She said that they have me checking out today. I went to the front desk and showed them my email confirmed reservation for three nights and the manager stated "sorry but our system only has you for one night". Even with my confirmation email she said I could not stay in my room and had to move to an older room outside of the main building with 2 small beds verses my king size. I could not believe it but she would not agree to simply let me stay in my room. To the Motel portion for me it seems. So I packed up all my belongings, shut down my 2 laptops, ended my conference call I was on and moved rooms. Not an easy move either as it required me to move my rental car also. What started as a positive experience and a 4 or 5 out of 5 went down hill immediately by a very poor management decision and a corporate traveller being moved due to their mistake, not mine. Well when winter hits Halifax and the tourists traffic dwindles, I will be spending my companies money elsewhere. And we even had a board room booked for regional meeting. Next meeting we won't be here. Interesting enough when I first checked in there was a another business traveler having issues with his room rate from the email confirmation he had.

    « Vacation in Halifax »

Loved it. Our second visit. Nice restaurant, nice patio. The breakfast was nothing special. Powdered eggs 4 day in a row was way too much for us. Bathroom supplies were scare. I had to phone the front desk for a shower cap, then they told me I have to down and get it from them.

    « Fourth stay here! »

I returned to this hotel for a 4th visit, despite my hesitations from my last visit (I had written about an extreme foul odour in room 718. Didn't stay in that room, so no problem.). I had read about Cocoa's retirement in another review, and it is true. She retired after 10 years of service with the hotel, and now lives with one of the hotel managers. It was weird not seeing her there. Lakeside view is really nice, and hotel in a quiet area outside of downtown Halifax, which isn't very far away at all. You can easily get to Peggy's Cove on the same road the hotel is on. Room was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated as was the whole hotel. Hotel staff was friendly and welcoming. Bathroom a little on the small side. Beds/pillows were comfortable. Great view of Chocolate Lake. Big TV. Restaurant on site ? a little pricey but food was good. Breakfast (included) was served buffet style in the on-site Lakeside Grill restaurant and consisted of sausages, eggs, french toast, hash browns, toast etc. hot and cold cereal, juice, coffee, tea, pasties, muffins and fruit. It gets quite busy just before 9am.

« Great hotel for a short stay »

This hotel is located a short cab ride from downtown in a nice little neighbourhood with a view of the nearby lake. This hotel was great on every account. Even though there were two weddings going on there, it wasn't too loud, and we were able to find convenient parking. The front desk staff were extremely helpful and friendly, and the chocolate lab that hands out by reception was adorable. The rooms are well appointed and clean. This isn't a luxury hotel, but it's the next best thing and you get excellent value for your money. I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Halifax.

« We love this Hotel »

We stay here each time we go to Halifax to visit my son and his family ..I's clean staff are friendly ,breakfast is served from 630 to 10 and it has a lot to chose from ..Helpful staff in the dinning room .It has a fitness room and pool I did not use it but did go down to have a look .

« Good but could have been better! »

Good, clean room with a lovely view of Chocolate Lake. Great breakfast choices included. Staff friendly and helpful. Pet friendly, only one complaint was due to our pet we were relegated to a certain area of the hotel for our room choice. This resulted in us having to do some stairs to access our room. We had a fair amount of luggage so we used the trolley to take our luggage from the front door and were stunned to find that we had to unload everything and haul that down stairs and then back up them when checking out so that was not good! Add the fact that I am handicapped and stairs prove difficult at the best of times made the stay challenging.

    « Welcoming »

Stayed here for 5 days in July and found everything about the place welcoming. The staff were very friendly and seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. They have a tradition of a chocolate Lab who is getting a little old but very friendly and usually hangs out around the lobby area. The buffat breakfast was the best selection I have ever seen in this setting and once again the staff were great. We had view of the lake but you can walk around the grounds or jump in the lake for a swim. They also had a nice little indoor pool.

    « Best Western, Chocolate Lake, N.S. »

Pet friendly so be prepared to share area outside with dogs. Beautiful retreat like setting on the edge of Halifax. Good value breakfast, simple but decent, would have preferred bacon one day instead of sausage patties both days. Friendly staff. Some inconsiderate noisy wedding guests were the only issue but not hotel's fault.

    « A place to stay »

Nice views if your room is lakeside- hotel does not pay attention to specific requests through booking.com. Breakfast is average at best- eating area is far too small and if you don't get to dining area by 8:30 be prepared to stand in line. Bathroom counter space is too small to keep toiletries etc. Carpets need to be replaced. Parking can be problematic at times

    4
« A little out of the way but quite a nice setting with easy bus access »

The front office staff were very helpfull, answered all our questions Ann pointed out areas of interest for us. The continental breakfast was diverse with a good selection of hot and cold item. Only issue is the menus was the same every day and if you there more than one day it becomes quite repititious? The layout of the hotel is a little convoluted over three floors and took som time getting used to

    5
« Excellent place to stay! »

This hotel is close to the highway and malls. It is 30 minutes from Peggy's cove. The staffs are courteous and very helpful. There is also a restaurant that is open until 10 pm, which I found very convenient and meals are delicious and reasonable in price. The buffet breakfast offers a wide variety of choices, excellent place to stay! Marlene

    « Wonderful family vacation »

We stayed five nights while we vacationed in Halifax. The rooms were clean and spacious. The beds were comfortable. The hot breakfast buffet was delicious and satisfied our four sons. The pool was cool and refreshing. The location was excellent. Just next to the traffic circle and easy to get to Sunday Mass, Dalhousie university, and the waterfront. Staff were friendly, recommended a family restaurant only 5 mintues away so we walked.

« Nice hotel, but nobody told us the pool was dug up ! »

My husband and I were pleased with the hotel overall. The room was nice and clean. I didn't expect the lakeside view to mean looking out at a flat roof, with an air compressor or air conditioner on it, but if we looked beyond that, we did see some water. We were extremely disappointed to learn at check in that the pool was not available for use. It was actually all dug up and probably had been for some time. I have MS and after traveling all day I was looking to relax my tight muscles in the pool. We found no place to access the lake behind the property. We enjoyed the breakfast both days and the staff was very pleasant. I Usually love Best Westerns and 3 nights or 5 in Canada were at Best Westerns. A heads up on the pool would have made all the difference in the world and been appreciated. On the other hand, for the first time in my life (at 63), I forgot to leave the maid a tip when we left ! I thought of it hours later after we left the area, and called to see if we could add a charge on the card we used to express our appreciation of her work. It could not be done.

    « Friends Meet n Greet »

Hotel was very nice and good location for a friends get together. Did not want to be downtown but gave us the opportunity to do so as located not a long distance from shopping and sight seeing. Beautiful view of the lake and a nice balcony to sit on and relax. Very nice breakfast included and the restaurant food was great

    « Ok hotel »

The outside of this hotel looks dingy, but the lobby was very nice. The rooms look good, but ours had a strong moldy smell, especially in the bathroom. It was very clean. We had lots of towels and wash clothes which was really appreciated. The staff was very nice and helpful. The breakfast area was very big and open... you also had the option to eat on the patio over looking the beautiful lake. There were good breakfast options and the food was good.

    « A bit disappointed... »

It is under my expectation. The room is quite old and a bit smelly. Not much breakfast food variety. Luckily the bed and pillows are comfortable... And staff at front desk are friendly and efficient. Compare to the Comfort Hotel at Bayer Lake, I am a bit disappointed to this so call Best Western "Plus" Hotel....

    « Convenient location. »

Was part of a wedding party from Toronto and stayed at this hotel for four nights. Check in was quick and front desk staff were friendly and helpful. First room assigned was in the 200's and had a urine smell and was next to the exit door, which I requested not to be near. If I am not mistaken this hotel is dog friendly and requests cannot always be met. Upon notifying the front desk we were assigned a room on the seventh floor. Room was perfect. Clean, air conditioning and water pressure worked well. It was quite, could not hear our neighbours. Breakfast was very good and plentiful. Hot and cold items. Dinner at the hotel was tasty and big portions were given. It was in a good location to travel to all the tourist sites. I would recommend and stay at this hotel again.

« Yet another disappointing Best Western Hotel »

We stayed here for our Son's wedding having booked it on air miles points. The hotel was clean, the surroundings were pretty and our queen suite was nice and spacious but we were not impressed with most of the staff. There were a number of staff at the front desk that were surly at best and downright rude at times. They were not very patient when you asked a question and we were not made to feel welcome at all. The breakfast was edible but the variety was poor for the hot breakfast, with the same four things everyday except Sunday, when they added some french toast. There were some great wait staff but not enough of them during the day, which doesn't make any sense when it is their high season and the kitchen staff were also borderline rude. It just seemed that most of the staff were unhappy and that didn't make for an enjoyable stay. We probably will stay elsewhere the next time we visit.

Free stay for points. Given a very large suite, with separate bedroom and living area, plus small kitchen. Comfortably appointed. Quiet, comfortable bed (Queen size). Good Wi Fi. Did not eat breakfast (not available before our check out). Only complaint: very little parking in front of hotel for check in.

« Could have been great, but very disappointed with management... »

My fiancé and I stayed at this hotel in the King suite with a view of the lake from August 19th to 22. We flew in from Montreal for a wedding that was very important to us and were excited to stay in the suite we had splurged on for the occasion. It was a nice room, with a great view, the hotel restaurant was good, and the customer facing employees were very friendly and helpful. Our luck ended when the guests in the room above ours flooded their soaker tub badly enough that water leaked (leaked is probably an understatement... we originally thought the sprinklers had gone off) through the vent and the sprinkler system and soaked a side of our bed and left two large puddles on either side of it, which were completely unavoidable when trying to get into the bed... We spoke to the front desk who assured us they would resolve this, and we asked for another room but the hotel was fully booked. We also spoke to the front desk about some kind of compensation, but management would only approve a $20 refund. We originally accepted this thinking that we were receiving compensation for having to leave our room for a few hours for them to dry things up or replace our wet mattress, when we should have been getting ready for the wedding. Unfortunately, we got back to our room only to find that the bed was still wet and the puddles in the carpet were just as bad as they were when we left. This all happened on the morning of the 20th, and the room and mattress were still wet when we left on the 22nd So, after paying for 3 nights in a suite for the extra space and comfort, we ended up having to play hopscotch to get to bed dry, sleep while avoiding 1/3 of the large bed we paid to use, and be limited to spending time in one of the two rooms we had paid for. While we understand that this wasn't caused by the hotel, they take security deposits for a reason and we should not have had to be so inconvenienced for damage caused by someone else. It was a bit insulting to know that every single room in the hotel was being paid for, and they thought that 10% off of one night was acceptable in return for all of this... We knew that the front desk clerk hadn't been in charge of this decision and that it was not her fault that we had to deal with all of this, and felt too guilty to get her involved in these problems again. All that to say that the hotel could have been fantastic - but we left without more than the $20 in return for all the trouble (which they refunded to the wrong card), and very disappointed with management at the hotel.

« Good choice, not far from downtown, pleasant setting »

Overall, a good value in Halifax. Clean friendly, great beds, good breakfast. The parking lot can be quite busy, but, there still seem to be enough spaces. You will need a car as downtown is not walking distance really. Easy access to Dalhousie university. Restaurant has a pleasant feel at night, fine for dinner.

    « A wonderful oasis »

My wife and I recently spent 5 nights at the Best Western Chocolate Lake (3 nights in mid-July and 2 more in early August). What a wonderful oasis only 12 minutes drive from the heart of Halifax. The covered deck overlooking the tree-lined lake was a delightful place to enjoy our complimentary hot breakfast and the other meals we ate there. The rooms were very clean and spacious. The staff couldn't have been nicer. On our 4th night there the front desk clerk said, "We've popped a little something in your fridge for you." When we got to our room and looked in our fridge there was a lovely platter of fresh fruit, cheese and crackers. How nice is that?! If I am ever lucky enough to visit Halifax again, there is nowhere else that i will want to stay..

    « Pleasantly surprised »

Not located in the downtown district, but very convenient if you have a car and are doing day trips. It is just a short, easy drive from downtown. Don't be fooled by the exterior. It is clean and has a great restaurant. Staff was wonderful.

« Good, but problems that need resolving, quick »

Pros: 1.Beautiful view of Chocolate Lake. Terrace right over lake. Swimming on other side.2. Good quality breakfast. 3. Good sized rooms-comfortable beds Cons: 1. The pool and hot were temporarily closed for emergency repairs. It is a large pool, which was one of our reasons for staying there. We were informed that people who booked directly through Best Western were eligible for a discount because of that, but people who booked through Hotels.com were not. 2. Parking is tight 3. Most egregious is a large sign warning guests to eat breakfast early because after 9 AM it becomes a gridlock. The gridlock is of their own making. The room was obviously once a bar, and the food layout forces the guests into a gauntlet in the narrow former bartenders area. There are obvious solutions, so just do it, and stop whining about the gridlock. 4. The TV was accompanied by a card warning of another temporary problem: that the channels listed on the card on the ones on the TV did not correspond.

« Chocolate Lake Best Western - pretty sweet »

Upon getting there we were a bit overwhelmed by the small parking lot but soon discovered that there was more than adequate parking. The hotel was fine - except our room was on the 3rd floor and after getting off the elevator, we found it impossible to continue using the luggage cart because of the 3 or 4 steps required to get to our room. Other than that, the stay was fine. Breakfast and the restaurant were also satisfactory.

    4
« Great place to stay! »

The hotel is beautiful, the staff is great and the complimentary breakfast was delicious! I ate more croissants than I will admit! Last was there in December but will be heading back to Halifax in September and will definitely be staying here.

« Halifax Best Western Chocolate Lake »

Outstanding renovated rooms, outstanding views from the rooms and the restaurant -- difficult to park if you return at night This hotel is in Halifax and near major highways. It books up in season and it becomes difficult to extend your stay.

    4
« Good hotel, great breakfast views »

We stayed at Chocolate Lake Best Western for two nights during our visit to Halifax. We chose it for it's free parking (which most Halifax hotels don't have), and great lake view. Our room was clean but quite small. We really enjoyed the included breakfast overlooking Chocolate Lake. Overall, would recommend for people wanting a good hotel but also not wanting to pay downtown Halifax prices.

    3
    « Great location »

The location was perfect for us; our room was large and clean - a basic hotel room but great size (417 top floor of smaller wing). Staff were very friendly and helpful; breakfast was exactly the same every day so we only did that twice since we were there for a week. It is free and there are options so you can make it work; but not ideal. Decor is a bit dated; common areas so-so; but for the money it was good value and the location is great.

    « nice hotel / nice setting »

Spent four nights at this hotel during a 22 day road trip A little farther from city centre than initially expected but as it turned out it was located fine for access to tourist attractions and outbound routes for day trips out of the city Very clean , nicely decorated located on a small lake Friendly , helpfull staff Patio off restaurant overlooks lake

    4
    « Always excellent »

Very clean, up-to-date hotel with a beautiful view of the lake. The included breakfast is delicious. Free parking also makes it a good choice for Halifax. In the past I've stayed there with a pet and the staff were very welcoming.

    « Use caution.... »

My husband & i stayed here for vacation in july; the hotel is nice but somewhat complicated to get to, parking is limited, and we had issues with noisy neighbors. Want a good nights sleep? Good luck. Want ice from ice machine? Good luck. I will say, the breakfast is pretty good though. Avaliable at an early time and lots of variety. Also, bonus, there is a subway right next door for a quick lunch or dinner. But still, if u try to call the front desk to tell them about the noise out in the hall, they wont do anything. If you don't have a problem with thin walls and loud doors (anytime anyone on your floor opens/closes the door, u will hear it) then this is the place for u

    4
    « Nice and quiet »

Good service, quiet, near the lake, very beautiful view. Good food and good service at the restaurant during lunch. The staff is very nice and helpful, weither it's questions about the stay or about the town. Needs more choice of food for the breakfast, and a bit tasteless.

    4
    « Great, but... »

We chose this hotel for 3 reasons, location, Cocoa the dog and the pool. When we got there, we were informed that Cocoa retired the day before. I wish the best retirement for Cocoa! We were also told that the pool was closed for renovations - I was a bit disappointed. Other that those 2 issues, this is a great hotel. The staff are kind and professional. Breakfast was ok, the food wasn't replenished often, but there was always a lot of variety. Would I stay there again? Absolutely!

« Hospital Decor, Brutal Breakfast, Sad Fitness Room, No Pool »

I am not a picky traveller. I will eat almost anything, I don't care about the fluffy towels or smell of soap, or whether someone was not particularly friendly at the front desk. But I have to say the Best Western Chocolate Lake sets the bar pretty low. Pros: Nice firm bed, soft pillows, great duvet, nice kitchen facility in room Cons: Queen room is like you are staying in hospital - sparse, could, very small. The only place to relax is the bed. Fitness room is sad with one decent machine working and TV the size of a laptop screen. Breakfast was nasty - stale pastries, rock hard potatoes, soggy fruit, only thing I could eat was cereal and I eat almost anything. Pool was closed and had been for 1-2 weeks. No notice, no one said anything at the front desk, nothing on the website - even though I booked a 3 weeks ahead of time. This hotel is pretty run down, not at all like the pictures. And very few get to see the actual lake. At $200 per night, I would say just about anywhere would be a better place to stay.

    « Beautiful View »

My daughter and I along with my friend and her daughter stayed at Chocolate Lake Hotel in Halifax, Aug 4th & 5th. The location was easy to get to by car, close to groceries and the University. It was very clean and the lake view was awesome! The continental breakfast had many choices and was also kept fully stocked and clean. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. I would definitely stay again.

    4
    « Dissappointed »

Very disappointed with our room. My husband booked a lake view 4 months in advance. We were put in a room facing the parking lot???? This was my bucket list trip and I doubt we will ever get back to the Maritimes. The bathroom was really small, no room to put anything. The carpet was stained and had ripples in it. The breakfast was good and so was dinner. The waiter in the dining room at night is great...very friendly....and finally a view of the lake from the dining room.

    « Parking nightmare »

I am quite a bit late in posting this, however better late than never, right? I have been to this hotel a few times to visit guests staying here, most recently was several months ago for a wedding. My in laws spent the night here, so we were in to visit. Their room was adequate, spacious bathroom (accessible room). They said the breakfast the following morning was great. We were there to attend a wedding. The venue was nice enough, however the food was great! Our one and only issue was parking. There is a bit of parking right out front, however not many spots and is difficult to get in and out of. Being we were there for a wedding there were many extra vehicles trying to park on top of people actually staying at the hotel. Trying to maneuver through their tight lot was terrible. If you drive anything larger than a small car it gets to be very tight. We managed to find a spot off to the side of the building. It certainly was not ideal as it was not well lit and we were left to walk in the dark around to the front of the building. The rooms were fine, service was good but the parking situation leaves something to be desired.

« Decent hotel with irritating traits. »

We stayed for five nights and the room was a good size with a powerful A/C unit (found it hard to keep a stable temperature). The playpen we requested was already set up for us which we appreciated. It was great having a fridge but a microwave would have helped immensely as well. We weren't told that the hotel is separated into wings, so when we checked in with our huge load of bags, we put it all on the trolley and went to our room. Only, the rooms 315 and I think 317 are near the elevator. The other rooms are down a set of stairs so we had to unload and reload the luggage which was supremely irritating and time consuming with a toddler. I wish they'd told us or given us the option to switch rooms, knowing we have a little one. The outside door by our room didn't lock which was a concern. The bathroom needs storage. There are no cupboards or drawers and hardly a strip of counterspace for amenities. It was very frustrating. Housekeeping time was always varied, another serious frustration. One day it was at 8, another at 1:30, another at 11. We needed in and out of our room and this made it impossible. We had to kick her out one day when we returned mid-afternooon to put our kid down. She'd just started on the bed and we only realized later we had no towels so had to request some from another housekeeper. The pillows were too soft and the bed extremely hard -- I woke with a pressure point bruise in my hip a few nights. Breakfast was always really good, though I found they ran out often and were slow to replenish. There wasn't enough fruit offered. Serving until 10 didn't seem late enough for guests, and one day, people were eating at 9:50 and the staff took away full platters of French toast and sausage. What a waste. The restaurant was overpriced ($2.75 for a can of pop? The vending machine bottles are the same price) and they don't deliver. Pool was unexpectedly closed when we arrived which was disappointing, laundry is a bit expensive, but overall, a good hotel and decent access to downtown if you have a car.

    3
« Great food in the restaurant »

The rooms were average - could have been cleaner. The lobby is not well marked when driving in, so it's a bit confusing. The pool and spa was broken the 3 days we were there. Service at the restaurant was very slow, but the food was delicious. Free hot breakfast each morning was good.

    5
    « 3 night stay »

Very friendly and helpful staff at the hotel. Met Cocoa the chocolate Labrador too! Rooms very clean and a good size. Nice selection served at breakfast. Chocolate lake backing into hotel a bonus. Short drive yo town centre.

    3
    « Okay »

We stayed twice at this hotel. On the first night of our vacation and the last night. My husband is a platinum member of Best Western and on both nights they put us street side. No perks there! The last evening we had an early morning flight and were woken up by someone's radio a 4 a.m. and again at 4:30 a.m. by the garbage truck. However the rooms were clean and large. The breakfast was good but the area is narrow and people enter from every which way so lots of bumping around.

    3
    « Tiny bathroom »

My overall rating is due to a very small bathroom in what otherwise is a good sized king br. Virtually no counter space and no shelves under the counter so many bathroom necessities and clothing you bring with you have to be placed on the toilet or the floor. The room was clean other than a large stain on the carpet. The TV remote won't allow you to enter a channel #, you have to scroll through the entire list to get the one you want. The a/c had a rattle in it. Location was ok, short ride to downtown but not walkable. Very large and nice lobby. Breakfast was ordinary, only meat offered was a sausage patty, but there is a nice outside deck with tables if you get there early. Pool was closed, if you wanted to swim you had to use the lake. This is a convention/event hotel that hosts weddings so that might be a factor in the other ratings but from the standpoint of a traveler that just wants a room and breakfast I can't rate it any higher.

    4
    « Wonderful view »

My husband and I stayed here in July 2016 and we were given a room on the top floor with a view over Chocolate Lake. It was a beautiful view and a nice room. The bathroom I found a bit small, and I found the bed a bit hard (but I'm a bit picky when it comes to that...and the pillows made up for it!). We had a king size bed. They have a hotel dog, Cocoa, who was cute but I found it a bit odd to have a dog in the hotel just roaming around the lobby. The free breakfast was actually quite good! There was a great selection, so my husband and I were very happy about that.

    « Indifferent Desk Clerks »

I have to be realistic about my mood when checking in to our long time pre booked reservation. At the time of arrival we were tired and in need of showers after camping with our grandchildren for two nights. There were two couples ahead of me who were served quickly and received their rooms with detailed information on Internet and pool right away. Upon my turn, I was informed that the room wasn't ready and to come back in 15 minutes. After waiting and returning with my husband and baggage in tow, we were again told the room was not ready and to sit in the lounge area to wait. I asked if another room was available and the response was no and that we had been upgraded to a suite. Again after waiting another 10 minutes we were registered into the suite, I asked if it had the lake view that we booked, and was informed that no, since they upgraded to a suite we didn't have a lake view but they could change us to a lake view if we wanted to wait a bit. By this time I was getting irritated and really wanted my shower so we accepted the suite. In hindsight I would not take the suite, no real upgrade. The clerk did not mention the wifi code nor the breakfast or pool closure to us as was done for previous clients. The breakfast area was chaos the next morning with very tight spaces to manoeuvre while trying to get coffee and food. Overall it was much less impressive a stay then the last time we stayed three years previously.

« A credit to the best western hotel chain »

By 'Best', I mean 'the best' as the brand name suggest for this BW hotel tucked away in Halifax. Friendly staff, great rooms and a great restaurant to boot with the best ever scrumptious chocolate fudge cheesecake that takes the name from the hotel's location of 'chocolate lake' it was well worth the stay or a weekend break. Travel to down town is a 45 minute walk or a short drive with plenty of parking and lots to see in the city of Halifax

If anyone is going to the Moncton area I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel. The rooms were clean. The breakfast was excellent. The staff were amazing and the chocolate Lake was a bonus.

This hotel was very clean. My partner and I had a lake view with a very beautiful view, especially in the early morning. The breakfast which is included in the price of the room was okay. The eggs were my favourite.Staff was very nice but I did miss the dog as Cocoa was not there at the time of our arrival. We checked out the bar and it was very nice with a very attentive(female) bartender there who was very good at her job.The bar was spotless.I ordered a Shiraz and liked it so much I asked the bartender(sorry I did not get her name) what it was and she showed me the bottle so that I could see what it looked like. The only negative thing was the lack of parking but to be fair there was a wedding there and I did get a room the day of.All in all a very nice place to stay for those who do not wish to be downtown center.

« Will remember for all the wrong reasons... »

Extremely awful and unprofessional check-in experience by Matt made for a awful experience and what was supposed to be a nice get away an awful memory. No apology given for his unprofessionalism or any amends offered for the wasted time, confusion and error on the hotels part. Very bad experience. Anything positive about the hotel was completely undermined and forgotten due to the awful experience.

    « It was ok »

Prior to our stay I didn't read reviews as we had gift cards to use for Best Western so we were staying here regardless. We stayed for one night on our travels around N.S. The room was lakeside and as others have mentioned what a beautiful view of the lake. The room was clean and the beds very comfortable. The bathroom was ok The continental breakfast although ok the area to get your food just stumped me.....the restaurant sitting area is so large but the area to grab your food is all squished where everyone is bumping into each other - no good flow at all. Maybe it's this way so people only grab one plateful and don't go back anything else? !! It was beautiful day so we could take our breakfast out on the deck area attached to the restaurant so that was good. Someone was smoking out there and a worker came and told them right away it wasn't allowed - that was appreciated. Having never been to Halifax before we didn't realize how far the hotel was from downtown where we wanted to walk around the boardwalk, ok that was our fault for not researching prior to our trip but just so you are aware this hotel is not close to downtown you need to Drive or take a cab to get there. If we ever returned to Halifax again we probably wouldn't stay here because of the proximity to downtown not because of the hotel itself as it was ok enough.

    « Great Value »

We recently stayed at this hotel being that it was close to a wedding we were attending. Upon arriving the parking lot was very deceiving ( not many spaces ) but we soon found out that there was loads of parking behind the hotel facing the lake. A HUGE plus is that this hotel does not charge for parking like many of the downtown hotels. This hotel also offers a hot complimentary breakfast which was amazing. A breakfast with a beautiful view of the lake at that. You were able to eat inside or outside on a terrace overlooking the lake. The rooms were nice except that the bathroom was extremely small. There was also no closet in the room, but they did have an armoir to hang things in. The hotel is very clean and the staff are very pleasant. I dont think there was a morning that we were not greeted with a "good morning" upon leaving our room. Another plus about this hotel was that they had a gaming room. Loads of Pinball machines. My only pet peeve ( no pun intended ) was that they allow pets in this hotel. Upon checking in, someone was checking in with FIVE yes FIVE cats. I was told pets were only allowed on the second floor but we were on a higher floor and upon returning one night heard a cat crying behind a door down the hall. The other problem about pets was that clients are not picking up after their pets outside. My son stepped in dog poop while viewing the grounds. Other than the pet issue I would recommend this hotel highly to anyone coming to the Halifax area. Great value and so conviently located. If we ever go back to Halifax we would not hesitate to stay here again.

« Stay at BW Chocolate Lake, Halifax »

Good stay; great self-serve breakfast; good location. We were not impressed with the check-in--the room wasn't ready at the stated check-in time and no compensation of any type was offered for the delay.

    « Pet rooms »

We had a reservation with this hotel. We had looked at this site for a review and everything looked positive. They gave us a lake view room. Which means a pet room! The first room still had wet dog stains on the rug and the room stenched of wet dog. We asked for another room and they politely gave us another lakefront (pet) room. This one didn't stink as much but there was still an odour. And the room was very dated. So I went and complained again and she went talk to the manager. They were going to give us someone else's room and give them our room when they arrived. And then I noticed a sign saying the pool and hot tub were closed. I asked the associate and she told me they were collapsing onto each other..... ....Anyways we had a bad experience and will not stay or recommend to anyone.

    « Very pleasant stay »

Everything and everybody were excellent. The only negative point is the small area where is the food for breakfast and maybe lack of choice of bacon and or ham. Staff very pleasant, helfull and courteous. We surely recommend this hotel.

« Okay, little problems added up after 6 night stay »

We stayed for 6 nights and wish we hadn't. First thing we noticed, staff at the front desk was efficient but never friendly. We never heard "How was your day out?" after someone gave us directions for a day or ever addressed us by name. The bathroom was tiny and we immediately noticed a second hairdryer taking up much needed counter space. The one on the wall of course didn't work. We told housekeeping twice and were told that they had nothing to do with maintenance. The whirlpool was out of order the whole time we were there and the pool was cold and shoved off in the basement. We had been looking forward to using it after a day out but it never happened. We went down to play pinball in the arcade one night only to have the machine eat our quarters. Front desk returned them but never bothered to ask me which one it was so no doubt, it will be eating quarters for a good while yet. We came back from a day out only to find our room not cleaned at 3:20pm in the afternoon. Three girls were running up and down the hall arguing over cleaning/supplies. Carts were regularly left unattended (a problem if someone with a walker/wheelchair needed to get by) and we had to ask them to vacuum after the fifth day because it was clear it hadn't been done. The breakfast was decent and had lots of fresh fruit available but I personally was disappointed with no bacon. Personal choice though so overall, they get good marks for the offerings. The view from our 5th floor lake view was very nice,, so it's worth it to be at the back. You need a car here to get anywhere, something to take in to account. Overall, the staff issues were a real turn off and not having a decent pool to relax in would keep me away. We had better experiences at other hotels along the way for a lot less money.

    « Excellent Choice »

This has been the nicest hotel and the most reasonably priced hotel that we have stayed in so far. I would give this hotel more than five stars if I could. Service has been great, rooms are bright and comfortable and the view of the lake is stunning. We were placed on a top floor with a view of the lake (as requested) and we find ourselves looking out the window often. The complimentary breakfast was in a real restaurant and was a real restaurant buffet. You can dine in or out on the patio while enjoying the view. Highly recommended!!!

This hotel is in a great location, right on a lake, making you forget that you're minutes away from the downtown area. The room was large and comfortable. The grounds are large and perfect for kids to run around and you can swim in the lake. The hotel has a restaurant on site with a very nice bar, the food was very good. Very convenient to have the restaurant on site. The hotel is perfectly situated to area attractions like Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, wine country. If you want to leave your car at the hotel, a bus stops right in front of the hotel and takes you downtown in 20 min. The hot breakfast was varied and plentiful, including fruits and cereal as well. The staff was very helpful. Would definitely recommend and return.

« Would Not Stay Here Again »

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and we were not happy with our choice. The entrance to the hotel parking area is not user friendly (too crowded) and there are not many parking spots out front but there are several around the sides of the hotel. Check in was quick and we were given instructions to find our hotel room. I parked the car around the side of the hotel and tried to find my way to the lobby area to meet up with my husband. It took me a few minutes to figure out that I was on a lower level and needed to go up a floor (took the elevator when I found it). Next was to find our room. I believe our room was in another section of the hotel that was added on later. We had to deal with a fire door and then zig and zag to find our room. On a few occasions we heard people looking for their room because the hotel is a bit confusing upon arrival. We booked a king suite. The bedroom is large with a gas fireplace (we never used this) and tv. The bed itself was very comfortable and the pillows were not too bad. The sitting area was a good size but the furniture is the most uncomfortable I have ever sat on. Neither my husband or I wanted to sit on them. Both our backs hurt from sitting on them when we did for a couple of hours to watch a Blue Jays game. One day it was quite cool outside and my husband tried to get the heat going in this area - it came on but then started to blow cold air. We could not get it working again The bathroom is quite small. I would have preferred a couple of more towels. The water in the shower got hot quickly so there was no waiting around but you had to be careful so you did not get scalded. There was a breakfast served - it was not the best. The area where the food was set up was behind the bar area so it could get quite congested. You have to have breakfast fairly early otherwise it just gets too busy. Keep in mind that buses stop here so that makes the hotel even busier. I read the TripAdvisor reviews and was expecting much better than we received. Our stay was a disappointment.

    « Lakeside Paradise »

I really think that the Chocolate Lake Hotel is a gem ? not perfect, but a gem nonetheless. The resident Chocolate Lab dog, Cocoa, now 10 years old, is a big part of my affection for this hotel, but then I am a dog lover. For those who like to keep dogs at a distance, I can say only that this dog will not bother you in any way. She delights in greeting people, but seems to know when her presence is not appreciated. Decor is, of course, on a theme of chocolate, so brown and earth tones predominate. My most recent room had one green wall, a nice touch. Rooms are clean, plumbing is modern and functional, internet is fast and flawless, windows may be opened, air conditioning and heating work well and without undue noise. If you are staying longer than one night, there is a card provided on which you can check off the level of service you want. Choices range from no service to full service, with various in-between options. Service options are for convenience only and do not affect pricing. In the 8 nights I stayed I found service to be first rate. If you are booking the Chocolate Lake Hotel, be aware that the building is placed right on the shore of Halifax's Chocolate Lake. This means that one side of the building has an amazing view of the lake, and possibly, if your room is high enough, also of the North West Arm. This is truly a wonderful outlook. Rooms on the other side, however, overlook St. Margaret's Bay Road, a not unpleasant but very ordinary view. Hotel staff are reluctant to guarantee you a room with a view. It is my personal belief that there should be some policy governing who gets the view, and who does not. The location of this hotel, just off the Armdale Rotary, may be problematic for some travellers. You really need a car at this hotel. The #6 bus, however, does stop right outside the door. It will take you all the way down to the Waterfront, via Quinpool, so almost all of the main Halifax attractions can be accessed using this bus. Sadly, it does not run all that frequently. If you intend to use it, get a Halifax Metro Transit ?Ride Guide,? and you will be able to predict its arrival and departure times quite accurately. If you do bring a car, and will be using the Rotary for the first time, take great care. It is connected to 5 different roads and can be quite daunting. But it is the only feasible way to get downtown from the Hotel. Parking at the hotel is generally fine. I had one problem when returning after a wedding reception was underway. There was not a single space available, and I just had to wait for someone to leave. A remedy for this needs to be found. I had two really excellent evening meals in the hotel dining room (Lakeside Grill), but as I did not eat breakfast there I cannot evaluate it. There's a bonus if you are a swimmer! Chocolate Lake is open for swimming. I noticed many people swimming the width of the lake for exercise. I would certainly return, no question. It's a great place to stay.

« Make a better choice to see Halifax »

My husband and I stayed two nights while touring Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. While the suite was spacious the rugs were worn and dirty. The furniture was somewhat uncomfortable. The location was disappointing and gave no sense of Halifax. The breakfast buffet was plentiful but the food was below average.

« Very happy we discovered this place »

Great stay! From the setting on the lake, the location to downtown Halifax and parking, to the helpfulness of the staff, it was nice to come back here after a day of sight-seeing knowing the room was clean, quite comfortable, and quiet. Staff were excellent and friendly. My only suggestion for improvements is the breakfast. Offerings were adequate, but not great compared to other places we've stayed. Food was ok, but quite bland, and not much variety. Coffee was terrible, I suggest they switch to a better brand, and make stronger. The self-serve kitchenette was just way to small for guests to navigate, too awkward. However, these complaints were minor, and didn't effect our overall very positive experience there. Would definitely stay there next time! Thanks so much!

« COCO THE IN-HOUSE DOG MAKES IT FEEL JUST LIKE HOME! »

We were fortunate enough to be able to combine business with pleasure during our recent trip to Halifax. As we were wrapping our stay up at this property attending a wedding that was taking place there, the property honoured their group rates fro us which was a very pleasant surprise. The only small glitch that occurred was that the ventilation fan was being replaced over the stove in the kitchen on the Tuesday evening that we arrived. This meant that there was not food available that evening as well as until super the next day. Lunch was included as part of our meetings package and the property brought in some of the best pizza that I have had in a long time. The salads and desserts that went with it were delicious. Lunch in the restaurant on the second day was just as good. Everyone pre-ordered what they wanted and it was served to us within minutes of arriving. A great variety of snack during breaks were also provided. The venue for our friend's wedding was also great! Even though the day was cloudy causing the wedding to be moved in doors, the staff had everything ready. The only small glitch was the bridal party being stuck in the elevator for 45 minutes between the wedding and the reception. Dinner at the reception was delicious and could have been a home-cooked meal. My favourite was the key-lime pie that was served for dessert. Would I stay there again - yes I would and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay just outside the downtown core of Halifax.

    « A great end to a long trip! »

We stayed at this hotel at end of a cross-country trip, and I can honestly that the hotel exceeded our expectations. Even though there was a slight problem with our booking (we had booked a pet-friendly room, through a third-party site, they couldn't find any record of it. However, they managed to put us into a better room, and saved the day! The hotel is very clean and comfortable, and the hot breakfast is awesome. On-site parking is a big tight if the hotel is full.

Lovely setting, well kept hotel with most amenities. Attentive staff. Bus into the city at the curb. Normally we would select a place in the city core. This hotel's price point and setting made it worth driving into Halifax and paying the, not too bad, parking rates. Upon our return to the hotel we enjoyed the resort like quality or BW Chocolate Lake. Will for sure stay here next time we get to lovely Halifax.

Did not have a successful visit to this hotel. Two of the reasons we stayed there was because there is a restaurant on site and they serve a HOT breakfast. When we checked in we were told the restaurant was closed for renovations and there would NOT be a hot breakfast the next morning. We had all intentions of having a nice meal on site so that we didn't have to go downtown for dinner. We checked into our suite. The bedroom area was fine but the living area was very tiny. No coffee table and only two chairs for the dining table. There were four of us and they knew that when the reservation was made. The kitchen was all right however our fridge malfunctioned. We told the person in housekeeping and were told that he would report it. The next morning we woke up to water all over the kitchen floor. We had quite a bit of food stored in the fridge as we taking it a to a function in the morning. We called the front desk and the person was not very helpful and nobody came to clean it up (we did it ourselves). The outdoor area facing the lake is very nice but there were no chairs or anything set up on the lawn area to enjoy the lake. All in all it was not the stay we had hoped and paid full price for. Will not stay there again.

Other than the fact that this property does not have an automatic opening/closing main entry door, it come very close to perfection and is a great place to stay and is pet friendly. Even though the property was very well occupied during our stay, noise level was not an issue.

    « Housekeeper/no housekeeper?? »

Stayed 2 nights with husband on business. Left first morning for meetings for him and shopping for me. Returned at 3 pm an our room wasn't made up!!!!! I've never had that before at any hotel I've ever stayed at before!! I saw a housekeeper was down the hall so I told her my room wasn't made up. And she asked what room I was in. I told her. She just said "huh". So I asked her for more towels and shampoo and went back and made the bed. I went away and left my kids home so I wouldn't have to do this work. As I never get away this was very disappointing!!! Then the next morning. We got up and left at 7 again. But I went back the hotel and had breakfast. Then went to my room went on my laptop and around 9:30 fell to sleep on the bed. Then all of a sudden something wakes me up!!!! It's the house keeper!!!!!! Saying. "Oh my god, I'm sorry" then left! I couldn't believe it! They can't come clean my room between my 2 night stays. But cone and try and do it with the quiet please on the door know and on check out day!!!!!! They never clean your room on check out day!!!! Let's just say that I was very disappointed!! And next time I will book where housekeeping has the hours for cleaning right! The view of the lake is very nice. The hotel is nice and newer. Was down in 303. It is a maze to get to our room!! And a very long walk. Only can use the front door or one back side entrance. Both miles away from our room. I'm assuming this wing of the hotel is for 3rd party guests to book. When I booked with Priceline got the same wing. And now with Expedia. And airmiles as well. The towel section must be for direct hotel bookings?!?! How is this right!?

« Good hotel away from the downtown »

This hotel is located in a quiet area on a beautiful lake. Aside from some renovations and some degree of confusion on check-in, this hotel has a lot to offer for those without luxury expectations. There is a restaurant onsite as well as a fitness centre and pool. Most unusual is the games room which is filled with vintage video games and pinball machines. The rooms are tidy but basic. The furniture, carpets and walls show signs of wear and tear. The staff are friendly.

    « Good room, however.. »

We arrived at this hotel at 11 am local time. Naturally, the room wasn't ready. We did confirm with the front desk that our rez was still valid. We went on for doctor appointments and we got back at 6ish. The new lady at the front desk said we didn't have a rez. We got to our room and it was sparkling clean. The room rocked. Parking on the other hand, sucked. We have a drive up room to make it convenient. However, we went out to get some dinner and came back to 1.. That's right, ONE parking spot that was available on the other side of the hotel. We are not impressed about the parking issue and we will be communicating this to the staff in the morning. Overall, I wouldn't give this hotel anything over 3 stars.

    « Comfortable, Great Location »

Stayed for three days at this hotel. It was clean and comfortable with a great location. The breakfast buffet was a great value with a good variety of food choices. Our room 412 had a lovely view of the lake but was hampered by the three large air conditioning units for the building outside our window. They were noisy and hampered our enjoyment. Parking was also a problem as the front parking lot filled up quickly. Parking is available on a lower level however. When we arrived in our room we discovered the shower was not operational and required maintenance to be called. The response was very quick and the issue was fixed while we were out.

« A real gem! You get way more than you pay for. »

We stayed here in 2015 while making arrangements for our 2016 CATD/RTC convention. After touring a series of hotels on Hollis and Barrington streets in the downtown core, it quickly became clear this hotel had much more to offer at a price that our not-for-profit Association could afford. Decent room rates, FREE parking, wifi, a great hot breakfast with a romantic setting on the lake and clean, spacious rooms. They were most accommodating in arranging meeting space, table arrangements and in-house catering. Feedback from our convention guests was all positive. Finding parking along the Boardwalk is scarce when it is busy so our guests who toured the Boardwalk went either by taxi or the bus that runs by the front door. If you arrive by air, I would suggest you rent a car at the airport, which is about 45 minutes out of town and can cost you $65 one way to Halifax by taxi. You can use the hotel as a home base to visit Peggy's Cove (40 mins West on HWY 333) and Lunenburg (1 hour west on HWY 103). Just turn left out of the parking lot and you are on your way. Enjoy Halifax. I did.

Stayed here for one night during the busy Victoria Day weekend in May and found it very pleasant. The room had a nice view over the lake and was very clean and although it initially seemed a bit small, it was enough space for 2 people with small luggage. The bathroom was vey clean, too and had the usual little amenities and a wonderful shower head with best pressure ever! Beds were comfortable, the only issue for me was that the pillows were way too soft but that is a matter of personal preference I guess. Check-in service was efficient and friendly, the resident dog sleeping behind the counter and totally adorable looking ?? Breakfast is included and has a good amount of choices ((hot and cold). The self-service breakfast area was very crowded and felt a bit too small to handle such a throng of people. We took our trays outside and enjoyed the patio with nice view over the lake. Parking is free but can be sparse at times, especially when coming back to the hotel late at night. We would definitely come back here again, good value for your money and a pleasant place.

« Very good Hotel in Great location »

Now if you have pets the Hotel is Pet Friendly and it is easy to get to after the rotary. The place is quite busy and Parking may be an issue on Occasion but the Hotel makes up for it and then some. We came with the UCT and stay over night after the Banquet. The Pool is quite good and the amenities are excellent. Good Location to get to shops, restaurants etc in the Area. Best Rooms would be at the back of the Hotel and overlooking the Lake. You can see right up the Northwest Arm and worth the little extra. We Stayed in #910 and had a commanding view of the area so rooms 900 - 920 even numbers on all floors from about 5 upwards would give you great views of Chocolate Lake. The all inclusive Breakfast is vast and so much choice from cooked breakfast and fresh fruit to cereal and continental style if you wish. They also have a program for if you have to leave prior to Restaurant open in the am. You can get a bag and go; just let the front desk know and you will get something to munch on the go. Good Hotel

    « Loved it »

My niece and I stayed overnite on June 1st at Best Western Chocolate Lake. My niece and I were attending my daughters graduation the next day. Upon first entering the lobby I felt very welcomed and the front desk were very friendly. It was after 3 and the very nice young man made sure our room was ready. He even called housekeeping to check. After I checked in I asked if it was ok to leave my car in their parking lot and grab a cab to places we wanted to go including graduation and she said that I could leave my car as long as I like. When we were ready to go out for the evening she gladly called me a cab. And after I checked out the next day a cab was called for us and I was able to leave my car. I would strongly recommend this hotel. Rooms are very clean, pool was awesome and amazing staff. Oh and the young man working the lounge was a hoot.

    « Very good value »

Very nice, inexpensive hotel! Close enough to downtown Halifax to easily drive within 5 - 7 minutes. Had a rental car, so distance was not a problem. If you don't rent a car, a taxi ride doesn't cost very much. Very friendly staff, breakfast was good and plentiful. Room very clean with a comfortable bed and very pleasant décor. Overall, good value for your money. Would stay there again if I were ever in Halifax again.

    « A nice stay. »

I stay here quite a lot, mostly because I'm usually staying with my boys, and it's nice to have breakfast included. Breakfast is very good here, enough options for everybody. The pool is good, the hottub is always in good working order (not always the case with a lot of hotels), there is a self-use laundry in the building also, which is also nice for families with kids. The workout room is smaller than I would like (I do hiit workouts and require a little bit more room), but it's adequate. My boys also really like the arcade. This is our usual place when we're in Halifax. I don't really mind that it's not easy walking distance from city center, but for the price I don't mind finding day parking downtown. The rooms and bathrooms are a decent size, and the suites are even bigger and more useful if you have small kids.

The rooms are small. The parking could be improved. The pool and hot tub weren't bad. we were traveling with my in-laws and they put us on the same floor as a high school choir. It was very noisy. We ended up moving to another floor. I don't think I would go back.

We had a beautiful room facing the lake on the 6th floor. It was clean and quiet. The bed was so comfortable we were sad to come home to our own! Reasonable price including a hot buffet breakfast every morning. Would definitely return.

« Staff were great beds not so great. »

The hotel staff were great and friendly to deal with. Breakfast was fine, but the beds are quite hard and make it hard for sleeping. Upgrade to the mattress might solve some problems. Staff did not advise either when booking whether it was a pet friendly room or not so that might help in the future for someone with allergies.

    « Excellent Stay! »

Excellent choice in a convenient location! The room was clean and quiet. Only took minutes to get to anywhere in the city! Though there was a wedding reception happening in the hotel, it was still very quiet and peaceful. Limited parking available so may need to walk a bit to your room, but that was okay for us. Beautiful view of the little lake as well! The free breakfast was also delicious! Will be back for sure!

    « Great Service-Great Location »

I am totally impressed with the quality and standards of service at the Chocolate Lake Hotel, Halifax NS. The location is close to all amenities and the lake view is captivating. Feels like a resort location rather than a downtown hotel. Great experience !!!!

    « Great stay »

Hotel was great. Location is close to many shopping and entertainment sectors. Rooms are very nice. Breakfast had a great variety and very good. We had a great view of the lake from our room. Hotel was packed because of a wedding but we were still able to find a parking spot. Very nice because we don't need to pay for parking. Only issue we had was pool was a little cold.

Enjoyed stay we were there for a hospital call so close to hospital. Room was fantastic so was the food. Went to check out and girl said you are already checked out put on your Visa. Would of like the opposition to pay the way we wanted. Got home checked account and another 100.00 added to bill . Not happy with that. Called and they said 50.00 per night added for incidentals. Not pleased with that but was fixed next day. Should let people know that before hand. Would we stay again. Maybe great place for dogs

« Some good, some bad. »

Good location, wonderful to be beside the lake, inadequate parking, building needing attention. The bathroom ventilation system doesn't work, and the hair dryer in our room didn't work. We politely asked for it to be fixed, but nothing happened. They were kind enough to give us a 10% discount because of that, which helped somewhat. Love the location and the breakfast was very good. Not sure I'd stay here again next time I'm visiting family.

    « Here by chance »

Were to stay at the Choice privileges Comfort Inn , Bedford, but they insisted we stay Saturday and Sunday . We only wanted one night but they only "had a few rooms left" . We were on this program as you can get a room free after just a few stays. Guess I wont as from now on Chocolate lake will be our first call. Too bad as the Comfort Inn is a great place to stay, but we had a good time , great meals , and a nice bunch of people there.

« Everything that you could want for a reasonable price »

This hotel has been updated, is clean, and easily accessible. The location is beautiful and overlooks the lake. The nightly rate was also attractive, and the hotel has all of the basics that you would expect. The complimentary breakfast is good, the pool area is alright (although in the basement), there is a cool arcade for the kids, and Coco(a), the main attraction chocolate lab mascot was a HIT with my son. I would actually have given this hotel 3.5 stars, simply because it is a fine example of a standard hotel, but nothing overly special.

    « suprised »

we had stayed at this hotel years ago and knew it was quite old. But we were surprised and pleased at the remodeling job inside and out. The full buffet breakfast was more than any "Breakfast Included" we have ever seen and amenities of pool, hot tub and exercise room were a plus.

    « Over all good »

My husband and family and I stayed over the weekend for Mother's day was it was a good breakfast we had the brunch which was excellent.my only complaint is about the pool. when in the pool area the smell of chlorine is so strong it burns your eyes. And later on we went down to go swimming the pool is closed but however it was open when we went back later on. Our stay was overall good probably would come back.

    « Comfortable stay »

We stayed at this hotel while visiting the IWK Children's Hospital. The location is very easy to access - easy to get to from the highway, easy to get to/from the hospital/downtown area. Overall it was a good stay. The Pros: - Hotel was very clean - They have a beautiful chocolate lab on site as a mascot which my daughter loved - Nice games room - Great location - The restaurant was EXCELLENT - we couldn't have asked for better service or better quality food, nice atmosphere as well. - The service was definitely top notch - The hot tub was lovely - Free parking and free hot continental breakfast The "Cons", were overall minor, but worth mentioning: - We normally stay at Bayers Lake Comfort Inn, so the rooms were quite small by comparison, and a bit darker - The pool, while very clean, was on the cool side. It's also a brine pool, so a mix of salt and chlorine. The chemicals were EXTREMELY strong, bad enough that it hurt to put your face under water, and it made my eyes sting just sitting on the pool deck watching my daughter swim. - Parking is very limited and congested. - The scrambled eggs at breakfast buffet were not cooked enough, and were a bit slimy/runny.

We had a great stay at Best Western Plus Chocolate Lake Hotel, Halifax. We especially like the location of the hotel; it is back on to the lake side and has a great view of the lake. We also like the breakfast and the clean room.

« Best Hotel in Halifax! »

I have stayed here twice with work. It is such a beautiful hotel with very friendly staff. The rooms are so clean and comfortable. The breakfast has a great selection of food, both hot and cold and items, and is perfect for those needing Gluten-free! This hotel is situated with a beautiful, peaceful view of the lake, with a beach on the opposite side of the lake. It is very easy to access and only minutes from the Bayers Lake outlet stores, the beautiful downtown area and the Halifax Harbour location. My favourite part of this hotel is their sweet chocolate lab, Cocoa! I have stayed at other hotels in the Halifax, but this is definitely my favourite!

I explored around the hotel both inside and out and found it to be very well kept. The pool area was spotless. Lobby very inviting and clean. Enjoyed the VERY GOOD coffee that was always available to me. Both in my room and in the lobby. That is a biggie with me :).

We found this Hotel to have excellent service ~ excellent well informed staff ~Restaurant (in the Evening) was excellent, food well prepared and prices very good as well ~ Breakfast buffet was a good one, my only complaint was the temperature of the restaurant for breakfast, it was Overly Cold, even the food cooled off before it could be eaten ~ Room and Lobby areas were all very clean and appealing . Would return again.

    « Great for a Business Traveller »

Stayed 3 nights at this hotel. Enjoyed the included breakfast, ate dinner in the restaurant, and met other business travelers in the bar. Overall a great experience. The service was first rate and the food was first class. I would highly recommend the short rib! Staff were extremely friendly and courteous. I will definitely stay here again.

« Good Hotel, No Parking »

I booked a room for my mother & me to use while she was visiting (Thursday-Sunday). This was the second time that we had stayed there because it's not far (10min) from my apartment, is a nice hotel with a good view, good staff and a chocolate lab loose in the hotel. While the staff was great, we encountered multiple issues. First room had loud noises from the A/C & a drill-like noise sporadically in the walls that kept her up until 3am. Staff moved us after she brought it to their attention. The next room had a tv that didn't work. While two staff tried to figure it out, it was not solved in the 2 nights/3 days that were spent in that room. For the final night, we picked up a chicken dinner to take back to the hotel room to share. To our complete surprise, there was no parking anywhere and vehicles were lined up trying to get out of the cramped lot. This meant that instead of a nice final evening together, my partner and I were forced to drop my mother and her food by the road and just go home. She complained to the front desk that evening and I mentioned it again at check out, as well as the other issues that we had. Concerning parking, we were told that it happens when the hotel is almost full and that staff would go out and find us an "unmarked parking spot" (essentially anywhere they think a car will fit) and that if your car gets damaged, that the hotel will pay. It sounds like if you aren't comfortable with that option that you are S.O.L. I asked for the manager's contact information and will be contacting her. I also suggested that they should make sure that people are away of the parking problem possibility. This is a nice hotel with good food, amenities and people, but I am really disappointed that we were not offered a discount on the $400 we paid for three nights and the parking issue is a deal breaker. I don't believe that we'll be willing to book there again for those reasons. If those issues had not existed, I would have given it an Excellent rating.

« Very nice property. Always stay there on business. »

Chocolate is a great place to stay. I always stay there when in halifax on business. Not downtown, but the neither is the cost. Late night parking can be difficult at times. Rooms are very nice, internet works fine, staff is great. Will stay there again.

    5
« As great as always! »

Have stayed here about half a dozen times now - never disappointed. Staff are welcoming and friendly, view of the lake is awesome. pool and hot tub are a bit dated, but always clean and enjoyable. Great parking, wifi and breakfast included are huge perks for the price of the stay too. They recently switched locations for the bar and breakfast buffet area, and i would have to say the breakfast are is really cramped because of the previous bar......really need to move that out a few feet to facilitate access for several people at once. Minor complaint tho. I always look forward to my next visit to Chocolate Lake :o)

« Clean hotel but small beds »

hotel is clean, but the beds are quite small. Originally asked for a queen but was put in a room with what seemed to be a double. Staff did book us in a room with two doubles - but were charged extra each night for a room upgrade.

    « Still a great choice. »

I had to change plans on a business trip suddenly, but was able to book a last minute room at Chocolate Lake. I had stayed here before and it hadn't changed. My room was in the tower this time. It was clean and very comfortable. It was extremely stormy outside that night, but the room was very quiet, despite the high winds. I had to leave very early the next morning so I was extremely surprised, and happy, to find I was able to get breakfast from the buffet at 6:30 in the am. I can't say enough about the service and quality of this hotel.

« Beautiful hotel on the outskirts of Halifax »

Beautiful hotel on the outskirts of Halifax. Nice if you want to avoid downtown halifax a bit. Beautiful view of chocolate lake. There is a sweet chocolate lab named cocoa who lives in house. We stayed in a king suite on the 3rd floor, we had a lake view 2 room suite. The staff here really goes over the top for thier customers. We requested as a bit of a joke for a bowl of red m&ms... when we arrived on good friday everything was closed but we still got our m&ms. Not all red but seeing as that nothing was open the fact that they were layered in a rainbow sequence was a nice touch. Bed was very comfortable. There was a pool with 6 to 8 person hot tub on site as well as a fitness center. The pool was always nice... especially the 9:30 till close adults only time in the pool. The restaurant was fairly priced and great food. The free breakfast buffet was okay... there was 4 hot items most morning was eggs, hash browns, sausages and beans or French toast. Cold options included fruit, yogurt and 4 cereal options. Parking is ample and free! All in all great experience! Bayers lake shopping center was also very close by. If we ever return to Halifax we will return to this hotel and will recommend it to friends. My only issues with this property was the lack of signage at the pool regarding the safety rings... multiple times while I was there parents would use the safety rings as floats for thier kids to swim. They are intended to be used in emergency situations not for leisure. The other issue was the all ages hot tub... the Red Cross recommends no children under 5 should be in a hot tub... simply put young children are more susceptible to heat and hyperthermia as well as should an "accident" occur as there were many children in diapers in the hot tub, just barely able to walk, the constant flow of water and jets as well as the hot water would make for a bad situation very quickly. Bacteria love hot wet places. Hot tubs are not safe places for children and there should be some sort of sign or hotel policy regarding this. I was also a little bit shocked to find out that locals can pay to use the pool... even though all the signs say for hotel guests only it would seem as though there is a bit of a public pool situation going on. Other than that great stay!

    « Work Trip »

I was visiting Halifax for work and this was a great place to stay! Just a short drive downtown, and to SMU/Dalhousie! The staff were friendly and helpful (especially the Thursday morning breakfast lady - what a gem!), and although I was travelling alone, I felt safe and comfortable! I would definitely stay here again!

the hike to pool was some what distant,or getting outside. Elevators were slow. Overall our stay was pleasant. THe breakfast offered was good, but 3 mornings in a row the food became the same. (kids loved it though) They are very quick to resolve any concerns or issue's.

    « Above average »

This hotel was above average. The staff was very nice and the hotel was clean. A few things that the hotel needs to work on are; managing the hot tub chlorine/chemical levels (chemicals caused coughing and redness of skin). The included breakfast was the same each morning which wasn't great, changing up an item or two each day would be nice. My wife also found the beds to be uncomfortable and we all agreed that the pillows weren't very comfortable.

    2
« Overall nice hotel but a few problems... The vending machine »

Very clean, nice rooms and friendly staff. The free breakfast was great for a free breakfast but they really need more space around the buffet bar. Hard to get by the 1 or more person. I can deal with this so not a deal breaker to stay here again. Hotel is in a prime location with free parking! I gave them a Poor rating based on their vending machine. Sounds crazy eh? Well here goes the story... I used my tap card in the vending machine and it didn't work after two attempts so I proceeded to the front desk to find out that oh yeah its broken you need to use cash. That's good to know, maybe post a sign on the vending machine saying that? Common sense would prevail right? Anyways I got charged when I tapped my card twice so now I'm disputing it with the credit card company. All you had to do was post a sign saying it was out of order. Now I'm wasting my time dealing with getting my $4 bucks back. I don't even care about the money. It's the hassle that frustrates me the most. Outside of that it's a great hotel. Just don't use the vending machine.

The lake around the hotel is charming, I will send the picture with this review. and I love the Breakfast buffet! « March Break »

We stayed the night March 13th. Our family enjoyed our stay. The room and clean and had everything we wanted. Our kids had a great time swimming in the pool and hot tub. The hot tub was closed on the first evening for some maitnence work which was explained to us by the maitnence worker who was polite and gave accurate timing when it would be back working. The morning breakfast was great. It can be a little crowded and possibly short on some food items at times, but this is understandable given number of guests. The front desk staff is polite and helpful for any questions that you may have (ie. Did my son leave his Pokemon cards in the room when we checked out!). Overall a great hotel inside and outside. Thanks for the great night stay.

Very clean, affordable and beautiful place to stay! Had family at the QEII and we had stayed at this hotel before and loved it so we decided to stay here again! Love the atmosphere and the lake is beautiful! Walking distance to the Halifax shopping centre and there's a Subway basically in the parking lot and also the restaurant here is great with a free hot breakfast every morning! Great place to unwind! And who can forget Cocoa the chocolate lab that is always there to greet you? Beautiful, well mannered dog ? Always a delight to see! Will be choosing this hotel every time we are in Halifax!!!

    « Excellent stay »

This hotel was perfect for our needs. The location was very convenient: we were 15 minutes from any part of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, etc. and the airport was less than 30 minutes away. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Our room was clean, comfortable, and large enough for 4 adults (we were rarely in the room other than to sleep.)

« A part of the building we have not stayed in! »

We are "regulars" at the BW Chocolate Lake, but never stayed in the Queen efficiency units. Pros, a kitchenette, quiet hallway and almost suite like space. Cons, tiny bathroom. We are used to the tower with 2 queens or a king, when the kids aren't along. Would chose one of those if given a choice. However, they were full and this unit was available. Everything else is what you would expect, clean rooms, decent breakfast (included), free parking and a 10 minute drive to DAL-SMU area, walking distance to Halifax Shopping Cente. Price is very competitive. Overall a safe bet.

« Staff, View and Mascot Make the Stay »

The Chocolate Lake Hotel is a reliably welcoming and pleasant hotel. The staff in particular are friendly and helpful. The lakeside venue is lovely, and of course the mascot, "Cocoa," who is a chocolate Labrador Retriever, is gentle and sweet with everyone. All in all, a fun place to stay.

This best western is not located near down town Halifax on the old St Margarets road off the Armdale Rotary it is kind of out of place. Attractions are not near by. However Peggys cove is about a 30 min drive. So for a best Western is is OK but not one of the better ones.

« Nice Hotel, very clean »

Hotel seemed very modern, clean, etc. Check in was easy, check out also. The only thing would be that unless the heat was turned extra high, the heater occasionally blew out cold air. Not sure if this was an operator error, or not. Breakfast was good, I liked the whole thing.

« Good place to stay at a good rate »

Was here for work, it was good to travel in the morning but expect huge traffic if you have to drive downtown. Parking is free, pool and fitness centre. There's also a breakfast but I thought it was pretty yucky. I opted for a breakfast restaurant instead. Great service and the staff was great to cancel my extra night since there was bad weather coming.

« A really wonderful place to be! »

Last weekend was the first time I actually stayed at Chocolate Lake Hotel although I have been there before for an event. The staff are absolutely amazing, and very friendly. We stayed the night of a storm and the staff called to tell us they had board games and if we needed anything and I thought that was really kind. They do go out of there way there to make guests happy and they had a full house! Unfortunately while I was there the pool and hot tub were out of order and I did not get to experience those which was upsetting. However me and my boyfriend picked this hotel because it is pet friendly which is so great. I had read a recent rating saying how a guest got yelled at by a Syrian guest because of their dog.Well, for starters I want to say that the staff is extremely accommodating and if anything like that was to arise they would handle it immediately if they had the knowledge but for 2, my experience was a little different. Some people were scared of the dogs, because they don't keep dogs as pets and no wonder they are scared of them! I would be scared of a foreign animal running around me too. So when I was walking I did have a little girl steer away from me. But other little girls wanted to pet them! One of my dogs, my 10 week old pitbull ran and jumped on two of the men (Hes just so fast I couldn't catch him in time) and they were scared however the first man apologized .. to me! He did not yell at me. I would certainly stay at this hotel again, We found it clean, and a warm environment.. just hoping the salt water pool will be back up & running! :)

« Best Western, Chocolate Lake »

This hotel is very nice and clean. The staff is friendly and very competent. Rooms are difficult to keep warm, but one manages to get confortable eventually. Shower mats should be made available to avoid slippage in the bathtub. Otherwise, great service and very friendly people. Very conveniently located coming in the city of Halifax and heading out from the capital.

    « Love it here!!!!!! »

We have stayed here a few times and always have a wonderful stay. This hotel has all the amenities you need and an included hot/cold breakfast buffet. The front desk staff are great. Very helpful and polite. Very great at problem solving. The rooms have always been nice and clean. They are spacious as well. This stay we recieved an upgraded room to a suite, very nice, loved it. All in all, this is a great place to stay. Pool, Hot Tub, Cocoa (the dog), clean, great room amenities, Convenience Store/Subway next door and included awesome buffett breakfast. What more can you ask for??? The only issue we had was one of the Syrian refugees freaked out at my wife about our dog being there and almost hitting our dog. Different cultures I guess and not the hotels fault, just hard to avoid if you have your dog there as the Syrian people are hanging out throughout the lobby and exits (smoking), so it makes it hard to avoid confrontation. That is about it. Great place and will be back again.

The service received was very good. The staff was very friendly and professional. We were very early for check in and they quickly accomodated us. Excellent bar and dining service as well.

    « Book Elsewhere »

We stayed here Jan 16, 2016 for a quick getaway. What we didn't know when we booked the room is that there were multiple Syrian refugee families living at the hotel waiting for their housing to be complete. We were put across the hall from a family whose kids were running up and down the halls screaming at inappropriate times, we did not sleep. Breakfast was terrible and I am not a picky eater, there was no variety, containers empty that were not refilled, when I looked around all the families staying at the hotel had their plates rounded up with yogurt, muffins, bags of bread, fruit whatever was ok to hoard back in their room. There were other couples also staying there the same time as us and I could tell by the look on their faces they were not happy either. We left early and went for breakfast elsewhere. The staff was friendly the rooms were clean, the hot tub burned my eyes from the chlorine content, the flapper in the back on the toilet broke off the chain, I tried to fix it but it wasn't possible, we should have called the front desk for it but didn't, I would stay here again if there weren't multiple families living here, I have stayed here in the past without any problems but this time I was not happy.

    « Nice Hotel - Odd Location »

The hotel is tucked away in a residential/business area with the lake in the back. Access to the front entrance is difficult based on limitations of space and maneuverability in the front parking lot. The lobby itself is comfortable and spacious and everyone loves the resident dog! We stayed in a king suite. It was spacious and had an extra sitting room/den with a fireplace. We booked a lakeview suite but you had to stand in a corner where 2 small windows came together to see the lake across the parking lot. Maybe if our room was on a higher level the parking lot wouldn't have been the focal view. But as it was, paying extra for the room was definitely not worth it. The hotel itself is pretty big and the pool and gameroom was down in the basement area which seemed a little remote. I only gave it a 3 rating based on these things. I think I probably would've gone to at least a 4 if we had better luck with our room/view.

    « Worked for us! »

Stayed here for two nights before flying home. It was recommended and booked for us by the visitor information at Peggy's cove. Although it was a bit more difficult to fine then necessary due to a wrong turn, lol, we finally did find it. As others have mentioned parking is a bit more difficult but check in was smooth and found front desk staff so helpful with directions etc. We had a light supper at the restaurant and it was fine. Breakfast was good both days. Small little lounge off to the side, great bartender. Rooms were a nice size, little kitchen area was a bonus. Staff kept it very clean. Location was good, we did go down to the wharf and travel there and back was good. Yes we would stay here again.

« The worst romantic getaway ever »

my wife and I decided to come to the city to go on a long needed vacation and we were not informed when we made our reservation or when we checked in the place has become a refugee camp. I can't believe the non stop noise of kids running around screaming and yelling , people invading your personal space, I mean standing inches from your face while in the elevator, and staring at my wife made her and I feel very uncomfortable. I'm also getting sick of hearing whenever you complain about the problems your called a racist, or looked down on as if you were a bigot . I guess what I'm saying is I'm just really disappointed that the Best Western ruined my vacation I've gone there a few times in the past and I will never ever ever be returning and I'll also pass this on to all my friends and coworkers. Very disappointed in our stay. It's one thing to be generous but it's another to have no control over guests.

« Not family wheelchair friendly »

Being part of a hockey team and a family of 4 and staying at this hotel was something our family was looking forward too. Being in a wheelchair 100% of the time we always have to book our rooms early so we try to have one that is accessible and with a roll in shower. We booked our room when we found out we were going to this hockey tournament and requested a room with roll in shower and we did receive this room. Problem is only 1 queen bed in this room. So we had to book 2 rooms. Before we travelled to Chocolate Lake we were going to have our oldest daughter stay with another team mate and family and we would get a cot for our youngest daughter to stay in our room. When we contacted the hotel they informed us that they do not have cots. First time hearing that one! Our youngest daughter was invited to stay with a different family when the rest of the parents found out but she is 11 years old and was not comfortable to do so. We then asked if there was anything the hotel could do to help out with the cost of the second they said they would take $10 off the second room. This is what we needed to do to stay at this hotel where all the team were staying which is a big part of going away for the kids to a hockey tournament. When we checked out I asked again and there was nothing they could do at the front desk but gave me a managers name to contact on Monday. When I called I was told they would look into it and call me back. That was 6 weeks ago and have not heard a word from them. I assume nothing will be done at this time so letting others no this is not a hotel to stay at with a disability and a family. Visa came today and paid over $800 for 3 nights with tax Expensive hockey tournament!!!!! If you are looking for a family getaway with a wheelchair, this is NOT your hotel.

    « A New Year's family tradition »

We stay here every year for New Year's Eve and we were not disappointed this year, though Cocoa the dog was not around, which was a bit of a disappointment, but we got over it. We booked 3 rooms - a King, a Queen, and 2 Queens. The 2 Queen room was the one with a lake view, but it was so foggy when we arrived there really was no view anyway! The rooms were very clean and well appointed. The place was very quiet and even the heater/ac unit isn't loud like in some hotels. I really like the washrooms! The lobby is beautifully decorated for Christmas, and the complimentary breakfast in the morning in the restaurant, is very good. It's a little congested in the area that they have alloted for serving, but we missed the rush, so that wasn't an issue. I really liked the availability of teapots to steep my tea in. There were also paper cups, plates and plastic cutlery available to get breakfast on the go, or take back to one's room. The pool and hot tub were enjoyed as well by our family. The only problem here was that we hadn't opened our closet to note that towels for the pool are there, and not at the pool as we were used to before. The front desk accomodated us however, so that we didn't have to collect keys and go back to all 3 rooms to get the towels! My only comment on the room, is that the coffeemaker is difficult to plug in, without toting it across the room. I had to crawl under the table and unplug a lamp in order to plug it in. And the full length mirror is in such a silly place behind a chair, that it's useless to use as a mirror! Very small details, and did not detract from our time. Other than that, great place, great time.

    « Reliable »

We have used this hotel repeatedly for many years since its renovation. Every visit has been pleasant and comfortable at a reasonable cost. An excellent dining room also distinguishes this hotel from any others as well as the amenities and locatipn of the hotel. We often recommend it to friends and colleagues without hesitation.

    « Good stay! »

Quiet, nice view from the room of the lake. There was a dog that lived at the front desk that was exciting for my step-daughter. Good breakfast buffet! Only negatives were that parking was difficult, and that the pool was very cold.

« One of our favorite hotels in Halifax »

The hotel is close to several things such as the Halifax Shopping Centre, the Armdale Rotary which leads to Quinpool Road area, St. Margaret's Bay, Purcell Cove area, etc. The receptionists are friendly and efficient. Our room was easily accessed from the elevator in the lobby and on our floor. Being on the ninth floor was great especially since there were Christmas parties and a wedding dinner and reception taking place on the main levels. The room service was very good. The hotel provided a free hot and cold breakfast. We enjoyed the spotless pool and whirlpool with clean changing area. There is free outdoor parking. On the weekend, parking was tricky but during the weekdays parking was a breeze!

    « Fabulous Stay »

Highly recommend this clean, family friendly hotel. Just had an exceptional 4 night stay. Our room had a wonderful view of the lake. Peaceful and close to everywhere we needed to go. Staff were amazing and loved the resident Chocolate Labrador retriever Cocoa. Would return.

« The print on the keycard says it all. They really do care,,, »

The family of the late Andrew Bednarz would like to take this opportunity on this forum to thank the staff and management of Best Western Plus Chocolate Lake. We would especially like to say thank you to Phyllis, who showed great compassion and caring to us in our time of sorrow. She took time out of her busy days while we were here, to talk with us and share stories of sadness. She is truly a kind, compassionate, caring person and we will never forget her generosity. I was having breakfast one morning and I glanced at the bottom of the keycard. It states, "stay with people who care". Those words could not be more true. So, again, thank you to all of you. We will not forget you.

    « Priced right »

Central hotel at a great price. This hotel offers a very good free hot buffet breakfast with lots of choices. Parking is also included which is rare in this area. Very friendly staff and clean, comfortable rooms. Requested a couple things brought to our room and they were delivered right away. Would definitely return.

    « Lakeside Grill »

Excellent meal last night at the Lakeside Grill ! Great place to go with a group. Very tasty appetizers, and I had the Grilled Haddock. Have been living here for 30 years and have had haddock many, many places. The Lakeside's presentation made my jaw drop, and it was delicious. A pet peeve of mine is bar/restaurant wine prices. The Lakeside's price by the bottle ($26 for a South American Malbec) best around!

« Will definitely be back! »

My husband and I recently stayed 3 nights at this hotel. It was our first time staying here and we both loved it! Rooms were very clean and cozy, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The continental breakfast downstairs was delicious, just what we needed before a long day of shopping. We ate lunch one day at the Lakeside Grill onsite and that was amazing! Very delicious! We both have nothing but great things to say about our stay, from the friendly, helpful staff, the great views from our room and the restaurant downstairs, and the cozy, clean rooms. We will definitely be back again :)

    « Not thrilled »

This hotel is nice and the service is great but the beds are not comfortable and the parking is not the greatest. After traveling all day to get here and then there was no parking because they are hosting a Christmas party, I was very disappointed. The paid guest should get parking over the teenagers who came to the party in my opinion.

« You have to meet Coco! »

I arrived at the hotel late in the day after travel and was beat. The front desk staff were so friendly and accomodating- I needed a document printed, I emailed it to them and they had it before I finished checking in. As well on the counter they had a cute photo of Santa with a dog, upon inquiring about who that was, I was directed to peek around the corner where I saw Coco, the beautiful and well-behaved chocolate lab! It was such a fun welcome and such a homey experience when you're staying away from home. As a dog lover, it was so nice to pat her and chat about her. It shows that the people really care if they're willing to have a communal dog :) If anyone is afraid of dogs, she is lovely and kept away until I called her over. so nice!

    « Comfortable stay »

The accommodations are good except for flat pillows, who needs six flat pillows on one bed? Get rid of four and buy two good ones.....and those darn plastic soap holders that make an aweful screeching sound against the countertop, it's as bad as running fingers on a chalkboard and could probably make a dog howl LOL, I wish they would get rid of those!! Oh and while I'm at it, this is typical for all hotels.....why do they tuck the blankets in so tight at the foot of the bed, when one lies on his back, toes do point in the upward position... leave some slack for those.

« A lovely, central play to stay! »

My husband, mother-in-law and myself stayed for 5 nights at this hotel as we were visiting relatives in the area. The staff were very knowledgeable of the area, friendly and wanted to please. EG: we only had one luggage holder in the room (there were 3 of us). In the first 15 minutes after we arrived, the maintenance staff made sure we had 2 extra-wide chairs added to the room to put our suitcases on. The beds and beautiful duvets are oh-so-comfy and we had a lovely view of the lake. The breakfast was copious with everything from scrambled eggs, sausages, home fries, beans ... to French toast, cereals, fruit, juices, yogurt and delicious coffee .... and more! The grandchildren loved the pool and hot tub. We all had a blast there and our only complaint is that there is soooo much chlorine (especially in the hot tub) that the children were having breathing issues. All of our eyes hurt for hours after we had finished (but we DID have fun!!!). The Wi-Fi in the room could ALWAYS be counted on to work! This hotel is located very near lots of shopping, touristy sites and great restaurants. It's only moments to the highway to take you out to Bedford, the South Shore and beyond. Check in and out was easy and efficient. I found the price to be high as I had booked a Groupon and it was NOT stated the the funds were US until AFTER they debited by Credit Card. Next time, I'll be booking directly with Best Western.

« Unbelievably, stunningly good dinner »

An excellent hotel all around, but the really notable aspect we found was the quality of the dinner! Who would think, at a hotel, and especially at a Best Western? We and our friends enjoyed one of the best meals I've ever eaten, anywhere. Eat a bite, yum, eat a bit, yum. We normally don't eat dinner at hotels, but our friends had come in earlier the night before, and said it was unbelievable. So we all had dinner there the next night - and my wife and I agreed! Amazing. To be clear the breakfast is typical fare, it's the dinner I'm speaking of. In addition, the staff was very friendly and helpful answering our tourist questions. It's a beautiful setting on Chocolate Lake (eat outdoors if you can). This is a hotel that seems to go out of their way. They even have a hotel chocolate lab! One caution: parking is tight. I rarely write reviews, but I just had to here -- my wife & I heartily recommend it.

« nice hotel in a good location »

This hotel is located almost right next to the armdale rotary on chocolate lake. The property is nice and it is in a quiet area but located pretty close to town. The hotel itself is kept well and very clean. The room we had was comfortable and there wasn't a whole lot of noise at night. The hotel is laid out kind of funny, it's almost like a little bit of a maze, but is nice none the less. Staff seemed very friendly and accommodating. Definitely worth the stay if you're in the area.

Great place to stay. Woud recommend it at any time to people who ask. I enjoyed the friendly service and helpfulness of the staff. They explained what each floor contained. Pet floor on first floor is a great attraction for people with pets. I was alone in the room and enjoyed the tranquility. I did not hear any loud noises in the corridors which is something great because you often hear lots of noise depending on where you stay. The location was great, beside the lake. It was very nice to look out and see the water. One thing I did find a bit difficult was the fact that I had a bit of a hard time finding the hotel. I called and the receptionist talked me through from where I was right up to the front door. I was very appreciative because it was dark and rainy and I made wrong turn. Thankfully, I did not panic and everything worked out fine.

« Big Bed and room and free parking »

On Chocolate Lake which is lovely and with free parking it is a good place to stay. We got a better deal on HOTEL BOOKING.COM than the hotel direct or Priceline. We got a King for a Queen price. The bed was big and comfy and the room immaculate - we were facing the car park which was fine and not too noisy. The room is heated and cooled by an ' air blower ' which we hate and it was under the window so close toy the bed - we had to switch it off as it was too much and noisy - we opened the window [ which is good as it can opened more than a millimeter, which is the norm these days. It was on;y open a little and not a hugely cold and windy night , but the covers where still lightweight and no extra blankets in the closet so it was a chilly sleep. If you like the heater then you'll love it - if like us you switch them off get some extra covers for the big comfy bed.

    « A Hotel with a Lake View »

we found the staff very friendly and helpful. Our was very comfortable and had an awesome view of the lake. This lake can be seen from the restaurant & lounge. They have lots of parking. The hotel is close to shopping and downtown near the harbour. Over all it was a great experience.

    « Great stay »

One of the best deals you can get in halifax area with a reasonable price. The room was clean. The lake view from 9th floor was fantastic. The complementary Breakfast was good on my previous stays but this time, it wasn't good, I was in the restaurant at 9am for breakfast but everything was cold in warmer dishes! I enjoyed the game room too. Overall, it was a great stay.

    « Excellent value »

This is our first choice for accommodation when coming to Halifax. Really like the restaurant, have found rooms to be clean and comfortable, staff friendly and helpful, like the location on the lake, particularly in the summer, and price is reasonable.

    « Another great stay »

The staff are courteous and the rooms are clean. I always consider Best Western Chocolate Lake before any other place in Halifax. I am always greeted as family, even though there may be different staff I have not met and always cheerful which helps a lot after a long travel day.

« Great location and good value for money »

I loved the location which was on the beautiful Chocolate Lake. The room was well appointed. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. Breakfast was simple and easy. The beds are very comfy which is important for a good nights sleep.

« Fabulous home base in Halifax »

This hotel is exceptionally priced and located on a gorgeous lake- ask for a room with a view! Watch the sun rise over Halifax and the beautiful treed lake as you wake. Beds were super comfortable and the rooms very clean. Free Breakfast was just what we needed to start our day- good coffee too. For dinner one night we tried the hotel restaurant and were so pleasantly surprised at how fantastic the food was! Good if not better than the highly rated restaurants on TA that we ate at in downtown. Give it a try. After staying at a few not so great hotels during our trip out here, this hotel was lovely.

    « Picturesque Chocolate Late »

The benefit of easy access to just about anywhere in Halifax, and yet that slightly rustic feel with a waterfront (lakeside) view. Breakfast is value, and overlooking the water while you eat an absolute bonus. Rooms are standard but beds are killer comfortable.

« Great Value & Location, Below Average Breakfast »

Location very convenient to downtown Halifax and sights. Free parking. Room small but excellent value for price paid. Breakfast needs improvement - more continental than full breakfast as advertised. Kitchen china needs thorough cleaning. Lakeside Grill restaurant - pulled pork tacos and scallops dinners excellent.

« Not what was expected »

This hotel is good if you're on quick business or a solo/couple one night stay. If you have children, or you're here for awhile, save your money. My husband and I travel here often. He has business in Halifax occasionally, and our baby is seen at IWK monthly. It was well rated, and looked spacious in the photos, so we were looking forward to it. The staff is nice, but the halls and rooms are SO small. We could barely get up to our floor with the carseat. We got into the room, and the bed barely fits in the room, let alone having a playpen to sleep in. We situated everything to fit, but it was snug. Only about 50% of the rooms face the lake, and ours faced the road. It was loud, and we could hear the elevators inside the room. The free hot breakfast was frustrating. It is buffet style in a bar like area that is small, which is fine, but there were 3 staff members in the small area that were blocking everyones way from getting food. There is not enough room for staff and guests.. Get out of the way!! Restock and cleanup when there is no foot traffic! The food was just ok. Eggs were cold. The coffee was the best part of our stay. Won't be returning.

    « Excellent Stay »

Stayed at the Best Western Plus at Chocolate Lake Hotel, Halifax for 5 nights in early October. We stayed in the Motel drive up units which were in the back and right on the Lake. The units were very clean and comfortable, with beautiful comfy beds with fluffy white duvets and up to date bathrooms. The units were a perfect location for our Sheltie, with easy access to the outdoors. Breakfast was fine. The hotel location on the lake is just beautiful. Service was fine, we had no problems but I had the feeling that if we did, they would have been dealt with promptly. My one complaint is not about the hotel, but about other guests who did not clean up after their dogs...this drives me crazy. I did see hotel staff doing this every day, but this should not be necessary. All in all, we had a great stay and we will stay there again!

    « Surprisingly Good »

My last stay at a Best Western was in Montreal and the experience was atrocious. This Best Western in Halifax was superb. Probably the best Best Western I've stayed at. It was clean and had a neat decor to it. Parking was free and staff was friendly. The hotel was a short distance from downtown (about a 5-6 minute drive). Great spot overall.

« Beautiful Hotel - Needs to have more restaurants etc. a little closer-beautiful scenic drive down Margarets Bay Road »

The staff at this hotel are the absolute best! They go out of their way to do what ever they can for you, and on the elevator staff going to other areas will be polite and hold a conversation as well. Had to come up for a Biopsy on my lungs and lymph nodes in my chest, which I hadn't mentioned to anyone, met another lady whose husband was in hospital unexpectedly , she was so sweet, and the staff were wonderful to her, she'd been there a while. They went out of their way to welcome her (home) you could call it after a long day at the hospital. She'd been there two weeks I learned from talking with her. She said everyone there had been absolutely great. I've stayed here a few times now and would go back again, but sometimes with health issues and costs you do have to pick where you can get a sale unfortunately money only goes so far, without going into big debt which I will not do. I look for clean rooms, bedding, shower and somewhere to get a bite to eat. They have it all.

    « Dated But comfortable. »

Breakfast was excellent but of the 4 days we ate there there was no real variety, but still good. Stopped in Aug. for a wedding and stayed 4 nights. Check in was easy and quick. The room was very comfortable. We did not take advantage of the pool or gym as we were extremely tired from our 10 hr. Drive. But they both looked great. Rooms are somewhat dated but clean and comfortable, just a little smaller.Highly recommend this hotel.

    « A PREMIER Best Western »

I would have rated Best Western PLUS Chocolate Lake Hotel, Halifax an equivalent to the best Western PREMIER Class of hotel. The Hotel is within the highway facilities, but behind a beautiful lake. The Staffs are extremely friendly and helpful, always smile. The restaurant served excellent menu, and the FREE breakfast buffet is one of the best I had within the Best Western organization within Canada. Highly recommended to anyone whether you are on a Business or pleasure trip. Would now pick this hotel as my Halifax visit.

    « Lakeside Pleasure »

We stayed in this lovely hotel for two nights while we explored Halifax. With us were our two university bound children and three dogs. This hotel was such a pleasant surprise. It is right on Chocolate Lake and offers wonderful views of the lake and landscaped gardens. The restaurant also offered those stunning views with a covered balcony and had gluten free bread available, great for dietary restrictions. Our room gave us a lakeside view while also giving us easy access to the outside for the dogs. The room was just about adequate in size for us all to fit in but of course we were a large party. More importantly the room, and hotel as a whole was impeccably clean. We would definitely stay at this hotel again. The only downside I would say is that is was a short drive into Halifax city centre, not the worst problem at all, but a walk into the city would have made it ideal. My one real criticism was not of the hotel but of it's guests. With three dogs of my own it really upset me to see that the scenic lakeside pet exercise area was not as clean as it should be. People who do not pick up up after their pets give other pet owners a bad name and we found it so embarrassing that we actually picked up other dog owners mess so that our dogs were not considered a nuisance.

    2
    « not impressed. »

This most certainly does not meet the standards of a Best Western PLUS hotel. Our two night stay started off with empty promises from the front desk supervisor ("I'll get back to you on that") for a simple luggage rack request! Needless to say, we never heard back, even after giving ample time and calling back. This is the same supervisor who rolled her eyes numerous times during a phone conversation she was having at the front desk with a seemingly disgruntled previous guest when we were checking in to the hotel. The room was full of stains (carpet, walls, curtains, bench/upholstered luggage rack torn) and the air conditioner was beyond loud with a musty odor. The walls in this hotel are paper thin (we stayed in the main portion of the hotel with a lakeview/AC view) and could hear slamming doors and our neighbors. The hallways need updating- the carpet was torn and ragged. I would not stay here again- quite a dumpy place! The highlight- one of the front desk staff recommended The Armview- a fantastic dinner- within walking distance. Otherwise I couldn't wait to check out from the time we checked in.

« Great hotel, great location to downtown Halifax »

Stayed here 3 nights. King bed was very comfortable. Pillows somewhat lumpy except for the extra one in the cupboard. Staff very friend. Love the resident mascot, chocolate lab Cocoa. Restaurant has a nice choice of offerings and food is good. Free hot buffet breakfast is good. Biscuits, sausages, French toast and scrambled eggs 2 of the 3 mornings, hard boiled eggs the last morning. No potatoes or bacon. Regular offerings on the cold side. Would definitely stay again.
