    « Fabulous »

Fabulous place. Lovely rooms and very friendly service and staff, who cant do enough for you. Bedrooms very well furnished and the huge bed was very comfortable, a positive experience. The whole place was very clean and no complaints to that effect. This location is also used for weddings. The grounds open up and lots of deer roam in the field opposite the reception. Very nice place to stay. The only downside was the size of portions for meals . Feel they could be larger portions for the amount one pays, other than that will definitely visit again.

This is a first for me reviewing a hotle on the internet but i felt I need to have my say. The hotle is placed on a beautiful piece of landscape with fantastic gardens and wildlife. The traditional county hotle was very well kept with traditional rooms and reception areas. My wife and I stayed only for one night sadly we would love to have stayed more. The rooms are very comfortable with great, clean, plentiful facilities, very comfortable beds and our room was surprisingly spacious. The staff at this hotle are second to non very warm and welcoming everyone is so friendly and always looking to help. We had dinner in one of the main restaurants, again in keeping with the fantastic country look. The two girls who served us are a credit to that business. "Benny" a charming young lady that I believe is European was very knowledgeable in regards to the menu helping us with both food and wine the hole experience was fantastic. The only thing I would pick up on is portion sizes there isn't a great deal of food for the money you pay. I was told the portion sizes where bigger in a different restaurant with in the hotle We finished our night with a night cap in the lounge bar this area was very comfortable warm and cosy. Having just finished breakfast I can tell you it was delicious the restaurant was the same as last night but new staff again very warm and very welcoming Thank you whitworth hall We will definitely see you again soon

« Superb setting and decor »

This Hotel, a couple of miles out of Spennymoor, is a great rural country house type hotel. I have been here before, this time I had a chance to take some photo's, which I have shared. My room on the first floor was a good size with good quality furnishings, including two chairs and a side table. The Bathroom had a full sized suit, and a shower over the bath, with good water pressure. Only downside for me as a business user the internet signal was very poor, an issue I have experienced here before, so I had to use my phone as a hot spot, also tricky as there was very little phone reception for EE. There are two restaurants, with separate menus, so check the menus out first, however the food and service is excellent in both. Overall an excellent stay and I will be back.

    « Wedding »

We had our wedding here at the weekend, and could not have enjoyed it more. I would strongly recommend for anyone looking for a wedding venue. All of the staff were amazing, and made the day run smoothly. From the lovely smiley receptionist, to all the waiters and waitresses, everyone made a massive effort to make sure we had the best day ever. Extra thanks to our wedding coordinator Jackie, who just worked so hard, and listened carefully to everything I said. She was absolutely brilliant when one of my suppliers didn't do everything they were meant to, and her and the staff turned it around so that nothing was affected. The food was delicious. I enjoyed every mouthful and cleared every plate of every course, and other guests mentioned how good it was too. Such an effort was made to produce delicious dishes for my friend who is vegan and gluten intolerant, and she also enjoyed it all. The venue is beautiful, and the bridal suite was really special. We will undoubtedly be back whether it's for a meal, or for a stay to celebrate our anniversary. We were also delighted to receive a gift from the hotel of Champagne glasses with deer on, that we will truly treasure forever. From the very first contact with David, another wedding coordinator, the support we had with our special day was seamless, and we would both like to thank each and every member of staff involved for giving us one of the best days of our lives. « Lovely place »

Stayed here with my husband on 10th November. A lovely comfortable hotel with beautiful grounds. Dinner was served in the conservatory which on a November night was a wee bit chilly. Would have preferred to eat where we had breakfast the following morning. Evening meal ok but the breakfast was excellent. Friendly and professional staff. Will need to visit in the summer to take full advantage of the grounds.

« Short Break Silver Wedding Celebration »

We stayed here for two nights to celebrate our Silver Wedding. We were given a warm welcome and our suitcase was taken upstairs to our room. The room was lovely overlooking the park with a herd of fallow deer. The room was large with a comfortable sofa, plenty of tea and coffee,a coffee maker and a mini fridge containing a jug of fresh milk and bottled water. The en-suite had a jacuzzi bath and a good shower with plenty of hot water. The bed was comfortable with a feather mattress topper. Our first evening meal was in the Brasserie and was a limited choice set menu as one night we booked was an offer. The second night we ate in the Library dining room which had both the Brasserie and A la Carte menues. Both meals were delicious and very well presented. The breakfast on both days was lovely with an excellent choice of both hot and cold food, Food was cooked to order and was nice and hot. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay again if we were in the area. The only slight criticism is that it was a bit chilly in certain areas, although there was a roaring fire in the entrance lounge.

    « What a lucky find »

This ticked all the boxes. We were looking for a great value break - countryside location but close to things to do, in this case the ancient city of Durham, and with good food - Whitworth Hall fitted the bill perfectly. To arrive to pretty deer looking over the fence was quite charming and the big smile by an efficient receptionist was a great welcome. The autumn colour was a bonus. We loved it and will be back soon. Thank you to all the staff.

    « Best Western - Worst Western »

Attended a family wedding here and although they had a removable ramp at the main entrance the doors were heavy and no one on standby to assist. When inside the reception desk was too high to communicate with the staff behind it especially if you're wheelchair bound and the disabled toilet was poor - the area shared it's self with a baby changing station and the smell was disgusting and made much worse by having mess all over the floor. The toilet seat wasn't safe and after reporting the facts the door was locked and an "Out of Order" sign put up. The pathway to the church was small stones which was extremely dangerous to get through if you're in a wheelchair and the church doesn't have a place for you no matter where you are in the wedding party so it's the back for those of us in wheelchairs. Coming out of the church and seeing a proper path was great only to find it took you down a small path near a busy country road out of the grounds of the hotel on a 5mile hike. Definitely not good if you are or any one in your party is in a wheelchair - think again for god sake!

This place has always been a favourite of mine and the wifes after last two visits will not be returning. Service staff was very rude and drinking alcohol on shift. Not to mention food has recently gone from one of the best around to serving luke warm average food i would prefer maccyds to what we have experienced last two visits.

« Whitworth is Worth It! »

Much has been said of the deer (hugely endearing) and the suitability of this hotel for weddings, all of which is obvious to even the casual guest looking for a few days' peace and quiet - which is exactly what we were after. For a 3-star hotel the accommodation and food were excellent, and although full board prices are at the top end of the price range we felt it was worth the money. Our "executive" room was spacious and comfortable, with good facilities apart from limited bathroom shelving, and we overlooked the deer park at the front. The hotel has a rather public bar beside the grand staircase, complete with lots of bookshelves to browse, and there is a comfortable residents' lounge nearby. Breakfasts were most enjoyable despite a limited buffet, with most items being freshly cooked to order, and having opted to dine in each evening our choice was slightly restricted by the cosy Library restaurant being closed Sundays and Mondays. However, the more austere conservatory Brasserie with its tiled floor was fine although it had a more predictable menu. The Library has fine dining as its main attraction, but in both locations the food was high quality and well presented; drinks were reasonably priced. In all areas the staff were low-key, pleasant and polite, and there was definitely a calm and relaxed feel to the whole establishment. Parking provision at the hotel is excellent, and despite its rural location it is only a short drive into Durham City. We also took the opportunity to visit the Durham Dales and coast, and the several of the north Yorkshire coastal resorts - all of which are within easy reach. We were highly satisfied with our stay, which would have been nearly flawless if the Library restaurant had been open throughout.

    « Service staff rude! »

I was dining in the brasserie which was lovely and the lovely Gina was my waitress couldn't fault her at all or the gentlemen Lal! BUT!!!!! There was a couple of service girls very rude slamming the doors and nattering between one another in the corridor. Went down to the bar for a final drink and one of them was running through the bar all giggling not interacting with guests just following one another like lost puppies! Other then this hotel is lovely and Receptionist Deborah was very pleasent

    « Amazing Hotel »

I can't find fault with this hotel. The room was perfect, the staff amazing, the food was out of this world. They couldn't do more and its in the most perfect setting. The public areas are clean, smart and well serviced.

    « Amazing »

Well what can I say! This hotel is amazing. My husband and I got this as a treat for my husbands 40th birthday. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds, the drive up to the hotel is beautiful the views are gorgeous. We stayed in a standard room which was lovely, clean and fresh. We ate in the conservatory on the evening, the food was amazing, presented very well and very tasty. The staff at the hotel are all very lovely and helpful, I would like the mention Lynn would was absolutely lovely to my husband and my self. Overall this hotel is a lovely place to spend to quality time with your loved ones. And of course the little added bonus is the deer that live within the hotel grounds, which your aloud to feed, you can buy bags of feed from reception for £1 per bag. My husband and I will definitely be back to spend another night here.

    « Lovely stay »

My mum and I stayed in a twin room. The room was nice and the bathroom lovely. Not much of a view, we had a downstairs room which faced a courtyard. The breakfast was excellent and staff very attentive. The only downfall was dinner on the Monday. The normal restaurant was closed so we had to eat in the conservatory which was very cold.it would have been ok if you had jumpers on but I was dress to eat in a hotel restaurant which are usually warm. Made for a very unpleasant dining experience. The Drive to the hotel with the herd of deer made it look very impressive. Durham unniversity and the Beamish museum is a must. Fantastic!!!!

    « Business Trips »

I needed a good hotel in a hurry and found this lovely country house in the middle of a deer park. What a find. I have now stayed here several times and why wouldn't you when its about the same price as a premier inn on the A1. Foods great service is good and the price of a pint is about the same as Surrey. interestingly the bar staff always apologise about the price of the beer. Its still cheap to me in such great surroundings. Keep it up guys.

    « Craig & bex wedding »

Really nice venue set on its own private estate. Our day was great from start until finish. The food we received was top quality and we really enjoyed being able to go and hand feed the deer on the estate. Only bad thing about the day was the weather but that couldn't be helped. Would definitely recommend/return to whitworth hall again

    « Great stay »

This is a really good hotel. We stayed in the deluxe four poster bedroom, the room was very grand with a very comfortable bed ! The shower was not so good but everything else was nice in the room. We had dinner in the library restaurant the food was excellent & competitively priced too. The service very friendly as well The hotel is set in a dear park with loads of dear that you can feed with food bought from reception for a small fee I would recommend this hotel & we would definitely stay here again !

    « Beautiful Setting for a Hotel »

Although my Granddaughter and I only stayed the one night this time, I love this hotel and will definitely return in the near future, It is in a beautiful setting and we had a lovely room although at the back of the hotel. The beds were extremely comfortable and breakfast was good.

« Beautiful but would have been perfect if we didn't look onto bin store »

Beautiful hotel. Relaxed and the most fantastic food in the library restaurant. The chef is innovative and served us the most fantastic food. Cannot wait to return. Unfortunately a few things in room needed fixing and disappointed by view of bin store. However I suppose the hotel cannot do anything about this. Beautiful grounds.

« A very pleasant, restful hotel with real character »

My wife and I stayed 3 nights in Oct. 2016. The hotel is in a country estate near Spennymnoor, a small town in County Durham. It;s reasonably close to Durham city but also interesting places such as Barnard Castle and scenic upper Teesdale. The public rooms are in the former grand house, with well-designed extensions. In the park around the hotel is a charming herd of fallow deer and a small lake. At one side is a sunken shrub garden with a water-wheel formerly fed from the lake; this area is lit at night by fairy-lights. The hotel's owner formerly lived in the house and clearly cares a great deal about its nearly-1000-year history and heritage; the outline provided in the Guest Info. folder was more than usually interesting.and very well-written. There are two restaurants, one informal and one slightly more formal. Dinners in both were to a high standard with intetesting menus using local produce. Wines were reasonably priced; by-the-glass malbec was very enjoyable. Our "standard" bedroom was well sized, comfortable and well-appointed and maintained. The furniture showed the odd little sign of wear but is of good quality and perfectly acceptable. The hotel staff, from reception to restaurant to housekeeping, were exceptionally friendly and seemed to take a lot of pride in the hotel. This made us feel very much at home and welcome even within the space of the 3 days.

« Beautiful place with fantastic staff »

When entering the hotel grounds and driving along the road into the hotel you are immediately met with the stunning view of the grounds and the beautiful deer. This is a lovely place for a quiet getaway, but very near to the centre of Durham. I went with my sister and we stayed in one of the twin rooms. The bedroom and bathroom were spotless. Nice spacious room, good toiletries in the bathroom (conditioner too which is great!). Extensive grounds and you can go for nice long walks and also get to feed the deer if you want to. Each and every staff member were all extremely friendly and helpful which just makes your stay even better. We stayed on a dinner bed and breakfast deal which was amazing value. The food was lovely, very big portions though - maybe a bit too big. Nice cooked breakfast only tiny wee thing was poached eggs not quite like you usually get in hotels they looked more like fried eggs (as I am dire at making them myself I love getting them in hotel!!). Also wine list for dinner had a great selection and prices to suit everyone. I would go back here.

« Comfortable hotel let down by its kitcen »

The location is great; set in a deer park. Our room was comfortable and well-appointed. The hotel was, in general, clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and the beer (Black Sheep) was good, but the whole was let down by the kitchen. Our food was disappointing, both at dinner and at breakfast. They could do with sending someone to see how they do it at Crooklands!

« Beautiful Place Beautiful surroundings »

I stayed here for a one night break in August on DBB was great. The staff were friendly the room was clean and tidy and comfortable. The hotel itself is cosy and comfortable nice snug bar and also some lovely grounds. The deer park was amazing and you could buy deer food from the reception in the hotel for £1 a bag. The restaurant Library was lovely the food was nice we ate off the seat menu as we were on DBB. The breakfast was hearty and nice they brought it to your table. Same as dinner service was great to. Would defintely go back for another trip soon.

« Another excellent stay. Staff brilliant but poor fillet steak on one night »

We stopped 12 months previously and the stay was fantastic. Food in the library restaurant on that stay was one of the best meals I had ever had. The hotel is in beautiful grounds and is a must visit. We then booked in June 2016 for a return visit in August 2016 on a 2 night DBB staying in the shaftoe suite. On arrival at the hotel set within its own magnificent grounds you can see the deer grazing its gardens, stream, fishing lake and church. Checked into the hotel and was then told library restaurant menu was not available on a Sunday or Monday evening. I wish I'd been told that on booking. The manageress Deborah then gave us the library restaurant menu as well as the Brasserie menu and gave us the option to choose and if the chef could do the food we wanted we could have it. She said we could still eat in the library as well. We selected food of the brasserie menu and ate in the library which is a lovely setting. I ordered fillet steak medium and my partner ordered rib eye medium rare Shame there was no venison on the menu on this occasion. The steaks came My partners was done to perfection. Mine was well done overcooked and grey in middle so it was returned to the kitchen. The next fillet steak came out undercooked and was rare with blood coming out when cut this was also sent back. Waitress and manageress so apologetic and embarrassed that it was wrong again. Finally the 3rd attempt came out by this time my partner had finished her meal. The chef had sliced the fillet steak in half not what you expect or want i wanted as I didn't ask for medallions. . One medallion was medium and the other was rare needless to say was sent back and another attempt was declined. Breakfast the following morning was excellent with all food freshly cooked and really enjoyable. Before we left for a day visit to Beamish we decided to still eat in the library restaurant that evening as it was a different chef working. We selected deserts from the library restaurant menu and I decided to have another fillet steak. That evening we ate in the library restaurant and the fillet steak was perfect and so was the rest of the food. The service was excellent to. The following morning breakfast was brilliant again. After feeding the deer we checked out. The reception manageress said she would refund the meal allowance from the first night and get the General manager to contact me on his return to the hotel from his holiday. The hotel is lovely. The staff are so professional and helpful. I left the hotel happy even though one nights food had let me down. Subsequently I spoke with the General manager on his return and discussed the issues. All I can say what a nice gentleman brilliant customer service . I will be returning for another visit on our yearly tour. Thank you again. I would highly recommend this hotel and will continue to return to it.

    « Wow! What a change! »

At my age, (80+), I have known this area from being a child and enjoying walks with my maternal grandfather. You might say that this colours my judgement of the Hotel. You may be right, but if you like space, in- and outdoors, great service, helpful staff, comfort, and restful nights, this is for you. The location is perfect with easy routes to all that County Durham has to offer, from Weardale inland, to sandy beaches to the East, Durham City, Beamish, Hartlepool, etc.

« Wonderful place to have a wedding reception »

This place is ideal, it's small enough to be friendly and personal, but is big enough to be able to find a quiet corner (Not much chance at our wedding, but otherwise easily done). Its a Pretty place, I mean picture postcard pretty, with Deer in the grounds, fairy lights in the trees, a dingly dell, with a little stream, water wheel, trees, shrubs, roses, flowers all well looked after and getting better each time we visited - someone is paying very close attention to the grounds, and spending a lot of time and money making improvements. The decor is a little quirky, with the enormous ceiling murals in the stairwell. I thought the place was clean, well decorated throughout, didn't notice scuff marks, peeling paper or yellowing paint anywhere. The room our reception was in was very pretty, the larger of the two function suites, and suited our purposes very well. Bedrooms - we stayed in Room 4 a Bridal room - my (new) wife found the bed a little hard, it is perfect for me, it was also a little warm, but we had windows open, but still too warm - not exactly the hotels fault - you can't blame them for weather and a fan was included in the room, AC is an unusual feature in most Victorian (?) country houses. Service. the staff were attentive, well presented, polite and professional - you didn't really notice them being there, but they seemed to cater very well for all of our guests and we wanted for nothing all day, Simon, one of the staff, deserves a mention he was excellent and should be commended for his superb customer care. I don't often tip particularly big but left a decent tip (for me anyway) which is an indication of how I felt about the service we received. The food. the food was, exactly what we had asked for, it was all tasty and well presented and was served quickly and efficiently from what I could see - obviously we were on the top table and got served first, but I looked around and no one waited very long as far as I could tell. Breakfast Was a buffet style affair, with additional things you could ask for from a menu that were included in the breakfast cost - superb! excellent! I think there was something for everyone and nobody left wishing that they'd been able to have something else or that there wasn't enough of something. Drinks It's a hotel, expect to pay hotel prices, and not cheap hotel prices, but they had catered particularly for me and my friends getting bottles of my favourite real and craft ales in - so I certainly can't complain about that, plus behind the bar the spirits were mostly top end labels - no cheap chatty spirits there, they had Tanqueray Gin - mmmmmmmm gin..... Overall the atmosphere was fantastic, the staff were great, the venue was photogenic and complimented well with our whole wedding theme. Everything went off without a hitch except ourselves being hitched and we had a fantastic time. NB Almost no phone signal at all in the hotel but there is free wifi so if you have EE you can make WiFi calls, outside is better reception. No reception was blessing and helped us make the choice - along with Deer - which you can feed and pet. Thanks to all at Whitworth!

« Country house turned hotel »

This hotel, located within a deer park, was a country house before its conversion. The décor is somewhat dated but clean, tidy and in keeping with the once country house. The fine dining aspect of the hotel is located in the library and the food is very good. The staff are pleasant and attentive; this comment particularly applies to the restaurant staff who made our two night stay very enjoyable. Our first morning breakfast was located in the library. Good quality, plentiful and individually cooked. Because of a wedding, and wedding guests stopping overnight, the following morning we had breakfast in the conservatory because of the large numbers, nice but not as good as the library and on this occasion the breakfast was self service. Good but not as good as the previous morning. If you want a quieter stay with a more individual service best avoid nights/mornings when a wedding is scheduled. A warning regarding the deer. It seems part of the hotel experience that you feed the deer. They are always hungry and herd around the feeder. If you are a child this can become a frightening experience so they are best fed behind the fence.

    « Fantastic wedding venue »

So a wedding is always glorious , and the setting for this one was fabulous . Unfortunately , I was too late to stay , but the day I had was wonderful and I would have liked to stay . The drive in , past the lake and lovely grounds , was the appetiser . Then the lovely buildings and the deer park , the inside of the hall was lovely ,beautiful and eccentric insides , and so comfortable . The building was comfortable and interesting and welcoming X The food at the wedding breakfast was very nice and the venue looked beautiful ( thanks to a very clever and creative bride !) The evening event was also comfortable and suited is very well . The inside and the outside public areas were all comfortable and interesting . Bar prices were also very reasonable . The star of the evening for me were the staff Stephen and Sarah and Matt and all the bar and waiting staff , were cheerful , helpful and efficient . The bride said that throughout their stay and planning the staff had all been fab . I had a lovely time X

Lovely hotel in nice grounds, the staff made us feel very welcome. The service and food were of a high quality. Good location for visiting Durham and surrounding attractions. Would recommend this hotel to family and friends.

    « Idyllic Surroundings »

An impressive venue starting with the approach to the hotel, the lake and then the herd of deer just by the hotel entrance. The receptionist was trying to deal with a telephone reservation, the sale of deer food and booking in new guests, to be fair she did manage her situation well without any outward signs of stress. The room was a good size, well equipped and well prepared. Room 20 was to the rear of the hotel overlooking the garden so was very quiet. The library restaurant and the brassiere served very good, freshly prepared and well presented food. The quality of the food was well worth the wait during "leisurely meals". The breakfast, served in the library restaurant, was equally well prepared and served by attentive staff. The only negative was being ignored by the barman who was intent on showing another member of staff how to slice lemons and limes! The acid test test - would I return, most definitely yes!

    « Excellent customer service »

We stayed for one night in this lovely hotel. In the grounds were a herd of deer grazing. The hotel had lovely original features and tasteful décor and was a great place to relax after a long drive. The breakfast was very tasty and severed in the old library. We had a minor issue with the shower, which had we not gone up to our room so late we would have mentioned earlier but on hearing our problem the General Manger immediately apologised and insisted on compensating us for the problem. Great place to stay with excellent friendly service.

« Summer Treat in Beautiful Surroundings »

We booked into the Brasserie for lunch for my parents 61st Wedding Anniversary celebration. We were able to get the car near to the entrance door of the restaurant to drop off my elderly parents and then park the car nearby. The food and service by the attentive staff was excellent, in a pretty air conditioned room. We had great views of the deer in the fields opposite and beside the bandstand, where we could get up close to feed them afterwards! We will definitely return for another future family celebration with all of the family!

    « Relaxing break »

Food was lovely staff are very polite and helpful Grounds are very well kept and lovely to walk in or sit in the shade and watch the world go by Building is old and full of character Bed was huge and comfortable Bad point the room was dusty, bedside table and trouser press were thick of dust, could blow it as so thick. Toilet floor dirty only the middle was washed and behind the taps in the bath grim.

« Visit to feed the deer and walk in the grounds »

Beautiful setting, very well kept grounds, beautiful building, ample parking at the back of the hotel. Very busy when we visited as there was a wedding in progress. Extremely clean, well kept. We paid for cobnuts to feed the beautiful resident deer who were very friendly and not at all shy! Visited Bobby Shaftos monument in the grounds. Well worth a visit, we would have had a meal but it was very busy as there was a wedding in progress so we chose not to.

Just had a fantastic afternoon tea at Whitworth Hall can highly recommend the children's one...my boys loved it especially the cream soda!! Staff fantastic too! Will definitely be back..gardens lovely for the kids to play in and the deer park is lovely to walk round.

    « A wonderful experience and hospitality »

Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel has it all! Long meandering driveway to the imposing hotel, large grounds to explore and the icing on the cake is the deer park. To feed the deers is an experience not to be missed. All this on top of excellent hospitality, sumptuous interior and welcoming staff who cannot do enough for your enjoyment. You must, just must visit.

« Nice location, need to improve customer focus »

Spent 2 nights, one on a voucher deal. Booking process chaotic, spoke to almost all the reception staff because they managed to loose our booking not once but twice (something about computer ) very pleasant and they did apologise for their mistakes. First impressions good, it is a lovely setting in the deer park with small lake and the Main house is pleasant ,several extensions. Nice public area as you enter. Our voucher included a meal allowance and as the restaurant was closed n the first night we asked if we could use the deal on the second - not possible - surprising as the hotel would have made a lot more money if we had...... Brasserie meal not impressive, stodgy pasta dish, lot of reliance on fried goods. Again the service was pleasant but not efficient. For example I saw someone on the next table ask for salt as thier cellar was empty - the waiter took the cellar from another table, replacing it with the empty cellar ! This was not the only time we experienced such unprofessional service. The hotel was not full, there were lots of staff around, and to be honest I felt they were more interested in chatting to each other than serving - I'm not the only person here to comment on this. Not impressed by breakfast, it was fine but have had much better from less 'upmarket' establishments. The room itself was spacious, slightly dated decor, on first impressions clean but several lapses such as broken tiles in the bathroom - where the shower barely functioned, and dust on items such as the tissue holder. I note that a lot of reviews here relate to good service for events such as weddings, and I can see it would be a delightful setting. When we left they were beginning to prepare for a large weeding in a couple of days. I kind of got the impression that this was where the attention was, not on everday customers.

Super staff, characterful hotel, relaxing stay. Hotel grounds provide something a little different, not often you can walk amongst deer after breakfast! Convenient location for visiting Durham and also the fabulous Kyren open air show.

    « Baptism »

Joint baptism with my best friend who had their daughter baptised too at the church next door. The hotel catered for 90 and it was fantastic. We chose the Sunday lunch option but we're only expecting standard chicken etc and a poor vegetarian option. In fact, all guests could choose what they wanted from a full menu- sea bass, pasta, lamb, beef, pork. The food was beautiful, nice room, Staff attentive and on hand but never in your face. They were very patient. Lovely venue and lovely day.

    « Overall a good stay »

Overall very good. Only niggle was the free wifi - virtually no reception in my room (my colleague was OK) and no reception in the breakfast room (I didn't check the dining area). Other than that the hotel is very pleasant and a good stay.

    « Amazing wedding venue »

What a fantastic setting for a wedding venue. Beautiful grounds with the added bonus of the roaming deer. We were here for a family wedding in July and had the most amazing day. Marquee in the grounds as well as use of the hotel for a family wedding. Children (and adults!) loved the deer who were very tame and roaming in the beautifully looked after grounds. We couldn't have had a better day Breakfast the following morning was lovely with fresh mushrooms. My favourite!!! Can't fault it

    « Peaceful with deers! »

Set in a deer park with an easy walk through the grazing deer. There was a wedding on during our stay but this caused no problems for other guests. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good with a decent choice of hot and cold food.

« Whitworth Hall Wedding Venue »

I had a great time as a bridesmaid for my friends wedding, from start to finish the staff here were fantastic. They were extremely helpful and professional looking after us all. The estate is a great venue for such an event and would recommend anyone to stay. The rooms are a great size and well furnished with all the amenities you need. The food served here throughout the day was great too. Thank you for a lovely weekend :)

    « Afternoon Tea »

Visited and had Afternoon Tea with my wife on her Birthday, Surroundings of the Hotel were really beautiful, but I'm sorry the Afternoon Tea was not up to the same Standard as Beamish Hall, no choice of sandwiches overall food not in the same class same with the service, and with being in the same Chain, Best Western, Really think they need to compare review and bring it up to the same standard , we have been to the Beamish Hall on numerous occasions and will continue to go, If and when Whitworth Hall becomes up to the same standard ,we shall try again ,

« Excellent accommodation, interesting service »

We spent 1 night here which was very comfortable and enjoyed a rather damp walk in the park amongst the deer. The food quality was excellent although the service left a lot to be desired. We sat down in the bar and 3 staff were chatting and didn't ask if we were dining or wanted a drink. The restaurant staff were very "Faulty Towers" and although friendly didn't have a clue about table service.

    « Impressive »

Visited here midweek on business and was very surprised by this hidden gem. If the competion want to see how it done pay a visit here. It is fair to say it has a couple of unfair advantages such as exellent countryside, the adjacent field with deer grazing and playing. But there is much more to this place. The high standard decor and furnishing is very much in keeping with this fine old hotel. The good service in the bar and restaraunt. The exellent value for money food and drink. Even the free wifi works well throughout the hotel and the welcome letter from reception is a nice touch. This place is worth a vist. I'm generally not easily impressed by hotels but this place does it for me and I'm happy to recomend by what I've seen and experienced

« Fantastic Hotel well placed for exploring Durham and surrounding area »

Stayed here over the weekend with my wife and 4 year old daughter. We booked using Tesco club card vouchers and were given a fantastic double room with an extra bed for my little one. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. What made it even better was being able to feed the Deer who are roaming about outside the hotel (deer food available at reception) Would definitely recommend staying here if you in the area ? ideally placed for visiting Durham, Digger land and Beamish. We had room 30 which was excellent.

    « Wedding day perfection!! »

Celebrated my daughters wedding in this stunning location on Friday 22nd July and our day was simply perfect! This beautiful hotel is situated in the most amazing, perfectly groomed surroundings that boast a deer park, lake & immaculate walkway through "the dene" with its very own water wheel and seasonal flowers. The rooms are lovely & spacious, pristine, relaxing and extremely comfy with gorgeous views. The staff are wonderful, the food was amazing, the day was perfect!!! I can't thank Whitworth enough for a day we'll always remember & David, as a wedding co-ordination your job is really difficult but you do it so well. I can't recommend this venue enough, it's just perfect!!

    « wedding »

this location is perfect for a wedding, and the staff cant do enough for you, they are the best hotel staff that I have seen. the whole day was perfect, they organised things, which went like clockwork, a fantastic team of men and women. My best friends daughter got married and had her wedding breakfast and evening reception there, , the deer were the icing on the cake, very gentle animals, and feeding them was an experience that I wont forget. My wife and I stayed for the night, a beautiful twin , ground floor. The room was awsome, spacious, clean, and had WI-FI in the bedroom, as well as the public areas of the building. the manager ( who has a close resemblane to captain birdseye) runs his team very well, and he is very user friendly, as I had occasion to speak to him on the morning of our departure. all in all the day was PERFECT and have no issue recomending this venue .

« Fantastic location and excellent service »

We booked my daughters 21st birthday party at Whitworth Hall in the Garden Room. We arranged the Sparkling Afternoon Tea for our guests and we were delighted. The staff were so friendly, helpful and attentive and the whole afternoon ran so smoothly. The room was beautifully decorated and the younger guests enjoyed exploring the grounds and of course going to see the baby deer. The food was excellent and of a very high quality. We couldn't have hoped for a better day. Many thanks!

« Lovely place to stay but wish they accepted dogs »

We staying here for a family wedding. Perfect setting. Lovely room which was well appointed with chairs to put 'stuff' on and sockets by the bed to plug in phone/iPad. Bed incredibly comfortable - I slept till 9.30. I never sleep that late ! My only niggle was service at breakfast. The staff seemed half asleep and were slow at replenishing the buffet and it was so long before they took our order for tea and toast that we'd finished our breakfast. Having said that, the food was good and the staff friendly. They don't accept dogs (maybe because they would chase the deer roaming the grounds) so probably won't return but definitely would if they changed this policy.

    « Simply Superb!! »

An really lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds, the hotel is only 7 miles from the City of Durham however it sits in acres of countyside with its own fishing pond and deer roaming around (which you can feed). Its ideal for a peaceful retreat. Our twin room was superb, very spacious, very well decorated with all the additions of tea/coffee, trouser press, toiletries in the bathroom and plenty of really soft towels!! One of my pet hates are shower curtains but Whitworth have glass shower screens. Rest of the hotel is well decorated and very clean. There's a wonderful garden room to sit in and have afternoon tea or just coffee, the brasserie food was good, average prices. Breakfast was served in the library, very tasty with good quality products. The staff here really do make your stay great, they are very friendly, happy to have a chat or help with you with suggestions of places to visit. Having spoken to a few of them, you can tell they enjoy working there which is testament to the management team. If I had to criticise something, the cleaners started outside our room both mornings so the vacumn cleaner was being used at 8am!! Would visit here again with the kids next time as they will love the deer and grounds. Its rated as a 3*, I would say its well worth a 4*, there's no spa facilities, personally I feel this would spoil the quaintness of the hotel.

« Faded around the edges in need of a makeover »

A very nice property with a lot of potential, public area pretty decent, and restaurant very lovely (old square paneled room, makes for very mellow dining). Let down by very dated rooms and bathrooms (Lino flooring, old shower in a bath). Car really needed here, location about £18 in a taxi from Durham.

    « Simply wonderful »

After reading some of the other reviews I didn't expect much, however my stay was delightful. The room was fine but the food and the service were superb, the maitre d was charming and all the staff were very patient and accommodating about my guests eating late and taking a long time over their meal. The staff graciously helped us to move our drinks from the bar when their meal was ready and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. I would gladly stay again, and indeed am looking for an occasion to do so!

Went to Whitworth for a family birthday and had a wonderful day! Looking forward to our Christmas Day here!

« An Ideal place to relax and enjoy the scenery »

This was a special surprise for my wife and I as our daughter had booked this for a family weekend to celebrate our Golden Wedding. We were really impressed with the location, hotel, staff, the four poster bedroom and food. There are walks around the grounds and lake and you can feed the deer. Historically the Hall was the home of "Bobby Shaftoe" in all a very interesting hotel. Will definitely come back again

    4
    « Wonderful stay »

Loved this hotel, Iimpressive staircase and the food and service was excellent, and to wake up to all the deers on the land was so different. Can't wait now for an offer to spend more time in this hotel, will be there in asap!!

    « Well worth a visit »

We took advantage of a deal to catch up with friends from Yorkshire. As a result of recent illness one of our friends was wheelchair bound and as such he required to be " made a fuss of " Well the staff here did just that so well done to all involved. The whole experience was very nice and we would certainly do it again.

    4
« Faded round the edges but the deers make up for it »

The building and grounds are beautiful. Inside is frankly looking a bit worn around the edges. This isn't a "luxury" hotel by any means. I'd describe it as a holiday inn/travel lodge but in a historic building. Good cooked breakfast selection but limited options if you don't want a fry up a cereal. BUT there's a deer park! With deer! Which you can feed! And really that's why you go there. We visited as students a decade ago and went again last weekend. So overlook the slightly tatty surroundings and enjoy petting the bambis.

    3
« good but leaving room for some niggles »

it's everything you will read about: pleasant building with an interesting history set within a splendid deer park and boasting nouvelle cuisine dining ...but our room (27) was rather pokey and stuffy (not helped by a broken bathroom fan); OK so we were on a 'voucher deal' so getting one of the less desirable rooms is not so surprising (although not done by every hotel), but then it turned out that although the voucher stated that "dinner is included" this meant only one course(!), and the "glass of wine each included" was in fact ignored because the cost of these was included in the bill and only removed on querying the unexpectedly large final amount, presented without any breakdown so it was not easy to see the error being made

    « Overnight Stay »

Beautiful setting and lovely grounds. Hotel is lovely and most staff were really friendly and helpful. Room was nice, really comfy bed and good size. Room was a little dated and carpet was dirty. Bathroom was nice but shower was barely a trickle. Didn't think the standard justified the price to be honest. Breakfast was poor. Sausage was burnt, beans came in a ramekin and were dry. Still had a lovely time.

    « My Daughters Wedding »

Must write to say thank you to David & all the staff at Whitworth Hall, Spennymoor for making my daughters wedding day very special. From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome & looked after until we left the following day. The Hotel is beautiful as are the rooms, attention to detail is excellent. The food is delicious from the Wedding canapés, breakfast right through to full English the following morning, thank you chef! I would highly recommend this Hotel for a family Wedding.

« Wonderful stay at Whitworth Hall »

My husband and I stayed at Whitworth Hall for three nights. The hotel is a former historic home and has lots of character and lovely grounds. I particularly enjoyed feeding the deer (where else can you have so much fun for £1!), exploring the wildlife garden and old church, huge breakfasts, comfortable bed and considerate and affable staff. I gave an average score below for Cleanliness as there was a couple of things in our guest room which wasn't up to the very high standard of everywhere else.

    « An unexpected gem ! »

My wife and I broke our journey here by stopping just the one night. It was intended as no more than a stopover but we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the accommodation, the beautiful rural surroundings and the substantial cooked and served breakfast. The hotel is about 2 miles from the centre of the fairly drab town of Spennymoor, yet the hotel set in tranquil surroundings of a deer park and a magical yet large garden walk may well have been a hundred miles away - what a contrast. We only had a standard room but it was very well furnished - apart from a dated TV - comfortable and deadly quiet. The bar and lounge were also very pleasant. The breakfast was marvellous. You help yourself to cereals , fruit juice ,etc and then wait to be served a substantial breakfast, which consisted of virtually 2 of everything. I couldn't eat again until tea time ! We continued our journey a bit reluctantly it has to be said - but we will be returning. You too will not be disappointed.

« A morning out feeding the deer »

My young girls and I love a visit here, feeding the deer and walking the gorgeous grounds of the hotel. Never actually stayed in the hotel. The hotel seems to be popular for christening and wedding receptions. Seen couple parties. Staff in reception always approachable

    « Mid Week Break »

We booked a 4 night mid week break at short notice and so glad we did! The hotel is lovely, staff friendly and food fantastic - plus each morning we woke to look out over the deer park. Perfect and restful! What more could we have asked for.

    « Fantastic country hotel »

This is a lovely country hotel set in a deer park with beautiful gardens. The rooms are a good size with comfy beds and a nice hot shower. Wifi is reasonable and free. Staff are very friendly and helpful. There are now two restauarants and the Library is a wonderful setting. The food is delicious and local, the venison pie is highly recommended. Breakfast is cooked to order and there are some nice selections including smoked salmon and scrambled egg,

« Better than the three star AA rating it has. »

This is a lovely hotel in the countryside with great grounds. The hotel is very quaint with lots of history to it. I loved reading about its past and previous owners (so I bought the book on its history). The room we were allocated was more than adequate for us, it's is a bit dated but that just give it lots of character. You get a double bed which was comfortable and plenty of tea coffee ect. The bathroom is smal but the bath is quite large, the shower was hot and powerful and there are a few toiletries to use. Obviously due to its age there is no air conditioning but there was a large fan to use and if you kept the window slighty open it didn't get to hot with the lovely sunny weather we had whilst there. Again there are no lifts to the rooms so like me who had mobility issues it is difficult walking up and Finn the stairs but this didn't spoil my stay. The Restuarant is really nice and airy with a nice ambiance. The food was top notch and served hot and remained so throught the meal, there is a good choice of wine which was very nice. The breakfast was also very good, it is served to you and it was excellent (actually there was so much food on the plate both mornings I couldn't eat it all). All the staff from the reception to the dining room where really excellent, they are really freindly and attentive. The receptionist had a great knowledge of not only the hotels history but also of the local area. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and well maintained, it was fantastic to be able the feed the deer that are there. It also has a great lake were you can fish and a little church you can visit. For a three star hotel it is amazingly better than expected and a great stay for people of all age groups, throughly enjoyable two nights and this is one hotel I would certainly visit again.

« Afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings. »

Visited her here for afternoon tea on a lovely warm and sunny day. We took our tea in the conservatory tastefully decorated in floral splendour with traditional English crockery. The menu included a sparkling wine and unusually a taster butternut squash soup aperitif. Finger sandwiches in different breads and home scones with cream were also on offer along with delicate pastries. This was a very acceptable afternoon tea with the added finesse of the charming maître de serving it and wearing gloves making you feel you were dining at the Ritz in London. The country park surroundings with the deer and wooded areas are a must to visit with young and old and this hotel is a jewel not to be missed.

    « Relaxing weekend »

This was our second visit and still as good as ever ,We ate both nights in the library restaurant and we were well satisfied with the food and service ,the beds were comfortable and the hotel well decorated . « Lovely stay »

My boyfriend treated me to a night away here for my birthday and we had a lovely stay. The surroundings of the hotel are beautiful and the deer are just a fantastic addition. Really unique. The only thing we could fault the stay on was decor of the room. The room was clean, and we had a lovely view of the lake and deer, but was very dated, and could really do with being renovated. We had a slight issue with the TV not working which was quickly rectified whilst we were eating Dinner in the restaurant, which also couldn't be faulted. Overall a wonderful night at a very reasonable price.

We have just had 5 days 4 nights here, lovely staff, comfortable rooms, good food, homely feeling we were on a coach trip The Hotel is set in a beautiful deer park, sunny patio with chairs and tables. a lovely walk though a fairy lit garden. The wifi was erratic in the rooms

    « Best hotel ever »

We stayed here for 3 nights as a birthday treat. Everything about this hotel was perfect the wonderful friendly deer in the park, the beautiful lit up garden walk this was just the outside. Inside the hotel is beautifully decorated throughout, the lounge areas library and dining rooms are all very spacious. All staff were very polite and helpful. Only 30 rooms so nowhere was crowded. We didn't eat in the restaurant although the menu looked very nice apart from breakfast, this was a cooked to order plus a buffet of cereals and fruit. Rooms were spacious and clean with plenty of wardrobe space and drawers. All rooms seem to have wonderful views of either the gardens or the deer in the park. Would definitely stay here again and look forward to doing so

    « Delightful Place »

This was my first visit but certainly won't be my last. We came for afternoon tea on a voucher and it as excellent. You were served a small cup of soup which was exquisite and a small quiche. There followed the usual three tier plate with sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and then three dainty little cakes each. As much tea as you could drink was all served by a very pleasant waitress. I even finished with a lovely cup of coffee. We finished by walking in the grounds where deer wandered.

    « What a gem »

The hotel is a small but beautify formed hotel. A choice of two restaurants and a bar lounge menu gives lots of options. I ate in the Library room restaurant and being told they have a new menu from a new chef I though um but I had the scallops with a wonderful Indian influence the small dots of lime pickle were so intense see and the little onion bagee superb. Then on to main pork three says loin very nice belly very nice pulled pork bass deep fried astonding. One note I ordered the chest board and ofter such a great experience I hope for more. On a positive criticism I would say I reckon there are so many local cheeses that would be shown here and that is what they need. Really if all I have to complain about is the cheeseboard, no a great experience the Maitre de was superb some many believe they are so superior not this one and forgive me for not remembering your name but if you want to see how a real Maitre De shold work a room come and watch him. All the other restaurant staff very know, egeable and at tentative. Would I come back here well yes for the food but the hotel with it's deer park and surrounding the wow. I have gone kna bit but they deserve the praise. At least an AA rosette next time

« Jaguar Enthusiasts' Car Club Weekend Away »

All 26 of our members had a great weekend at a hotel set in beautiful surroundings with walks in the grounds and the chance to see and feed the deer if you wished. There are many different places of interest to visit while in the area,. Meals were of a very high standard and served by friendly and efficient staff in a separate dining room - would recommend the hotel to any-one - the rooms were all beautifully furnished and comfortable -

    « Beautiful grounds »

We booked a one night stay here in January, as a wee treat to allay the January blues. It is not too far from where we live and we have visited the deer park a few times for a wander and to use the conservatory lounge for a cappuccino and cake. The building is lovely and steeped in history (which you can read about in the info. folders in the rooms) and the grounds beautiful. We enjoyed a roam around with bags of deer feed (available at reception for £1) and had no shortage of deer nuzzling our hands for a snack. Our room was a deluxe double, replete with a four poster bed.. The room was a great size and quite grand. The toilet and sink were on one side of the room, in an en suite, and the bath on the other side in it's own room. It's clear that there has been some time and money spent on decorating the room in a fitting style. However, there was a panel near one of the en suite rooms that had clearly been placed upside down; lack of attention to detail. And the choice of artwork was mismatched. There were too many framed pictures of differing styles, and set in unfathomable places (or is it just me that insists on symmetry?). It felt like had been dressed with quantity in mind, not quality, and it left that place feeling a little cluttered. The TV was pretty unviewable due to it's position in relation to the four-poster. The room was also incredibly hot through the night, with it being hard to strike a happy balance with the heating. We took sparkling afternoon tea for two in the conservatory lounge which should have been simple enough but there was a huge mix up in the order. Dinner in there was a more straightforward affair but it was cold when sat eating, despite being seated by a radiator. Breakfast in the library restaurant was very good, with a buffet and a fresh cooked breakfast on offer. Whitworth Hall is a lovely place but for all it's historic and perceived grandeur, as a hotel it really doesn't rank any higher than any other hotel that is comparable in price.

« Grounds are great to take the kids and see the deer »

We didn't stay at the hotel as we live locally but we did have lunch there after feeding the deer and walking in the grounds with my grandson. The food was good, although we only wanted a light lunch but the service seemed exceptionally slow - especially as there was no one else eating.

« Beautiful pot, fantastic service »

The staff at this hotel could not be more helpful and polite. We asked for two room nearby to one another and this was accommodated. We were able to check into one of the rooms early as it was ready (11am). Breakfast was first class with waiting staff far more experienced than most of the hotels we have staying in recently. The deer in the park are a delight to watch and the grounds are extensive and very pleasant to wander around. We will defiantly return.

    5
« Would recommend to anyone »

Excellent hotel-by far the nicest Best Western I have stayed in so far . Four poster bedroom was fabulous, jacuzzi spa bath-the bed was so comfortable-could not fault anything. Location in the country park was lovely-seeing the deer and feeding them made it even more special. Can see why people choose this place as their wedding venue. Excellent service-staff could not do enough to help you-just cannot understand why it is only classed as 3*.

« Lovely hotel, lovely staff »

34 of us from a Hertfordshire U3A stayed for 3 nights to visit Durham & Beamish. What a lovely hotel. Everyone said how spacious the rooms were - had everything you needed - bath/shower, tea & coffee making, trouser press, hair drier, TV. I believe there are only two floors to the hotel and no lift but there are plenty of ground floor rooms for those with mobility problems. As an independent party we were placed in a separate room for dining which was also lovely. We had a good choice for dinner (we were asked to make our selections at breakfast time which I think is a good idea). Dinner was served quickly and no one seemed to be kept waiting. Nor did I hear any complaints about the food and everyone said how friendly and helpful the hotel staff were. Also the grounds around the hotel were well worth a tour and had been immaculately kept. This is obviously a good choice for weddings and other large functions. Would certainly like the opportunity of staying here again if the occasion arises.

    5
    « Another great stay »

The hotel is exceedingly clean throughout. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and I stay whenever in this area. It is really commendable. Missed the deer as their area was being spruced up! The grounds are lovely.

« Great hotel in beautiful surroundings »

Had a 2 night stay, our room was clean and spacious, with a jacuzzi bath also had a mini fridge which contained bottles of water and a jug of milk, much better than the mini cartons you usually find in hotels. The room overlooked the deer park. The staff were very friendly and helpful, Breakfast was plentiful, lots of fresh fruit, cereals, good choice of cooked breakfasts, toast, kept us going most of the day. Ate in the brasserie on night again food was very good. Would definitely recommend and hope to return later in year.

    « A Beautiful Hotel »

I have mixed feeling about this hotel this time. it is our second visit to this hotel. the first time was amazing first class room, and a first class experience in every way. the grounds are amazing and one of the best hotels we have stayed in. unfortunately not this time. When I booked the room I explained I was in a wheel chair, so I would need a room that was accessible. when we arrived we had stairs to get to our room, we contacted reception who was very good, and exchanged our room, it was twin beds which was so far apart it was like being in another room, we asked if there was a double room was told we had to wait until the next day. we were moved to another which looked tired, and not very clean the bathroom tiles were broken which my husband caught his trowser on, all this was reported to the reception, who apologised . has the trip was for my birthday I felt it put a little damper on it.it was not what we expected from a hotel such as whit worth Hall.

« Great Hotel In Lovely Surroundings »

Just stayed at the Whitworth Hall hotel, cleanliness, standard of decor and furnishing put it way above the 3 stars advertised. The Hall itself is enhanced by its location in the countryside and the nearby deer make the whole package a wonderful experience and well worth the money paid. The staff were all polite and professional which added to a very positive stay. My only negatives are I couldn't get onto the wifi never mind logging in, wifi is a must for all travellers, this was disappointing. The first rate breakfast was spoilt for me as an inferior tomato sauce was given, only a small point but standards are so high it was a surprise!

The grounds to this hotel are very impressive with deer grazing in the fields which is lovely it also has a large pond that had men fishing at we were greeted by the friendly staff at reception and found our room easily which was very nice unfortunatly the shower temperature would not go cool which we reported to reception it wasnt fixed when we returned after our day out round durham so we moved to another similar room which was fine The breakfast was made fresh & was very nice There was a party on the saturday night which we thought may disturb our sleep but we heard nothing would return again

    « Anniversary celebration »

We got married here 10 years ago. We stayed overnight and had a meal for our anniversary. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to make our anniversary special. We got a free glass of champagne with our meal and the manager came to congratulate us. The chef even decorated our dessert plates and wrote in chocolate 'happy anniversary.' We will be coming back more often and bringing our daughter next time to feed the deer.

Well worth checking out Whitworth Hall if you are visting Durham City or any of the attractions in the wider area such as Beamish Museum. Not far from the A1, but tucked way in lovely countryside....and with its own herd of deer who are very friendly. Would be a lovely place for a wedding reception.

« We gave it a second chance. We wished we hadn't »

This is a review of the food service - not the hotel which is set in lovely grounds and which may well be a great place to stay. We decided to return after a year and a simply awful meal the first time. This time we found the "Brasserie" which is next door to the Library restaurant. I remain bemused by the generally positive comments of the ambience, food and service. The Brasserie is actually a conservatory with little atmosphere and plenty of drafts from the poorly fitted windows. There were two other couples in there when we arrived and the restaurant next door seemed to have only about half a dozen diners. To say there was no atmosphere would be kind. Considering that there were only about 12 customers the service was slow and inattentive. The staff comprised a head waiter and three young waiting staff who were poorly managed and all did each others jobs. We ordered drinks promptly but caused confusion when we said we wanted some time before ordering our meal. "Well what time do you want to order it then?". I ordered burger and chips. I am unsure what the burger was made from but in texture it resembled minced rubber and had little flavour. The venison pie had a better flavour but the portion was tiny with a large puff pastry top taking up most of the pot. Such a shame as this looks like a nice hotel and is in a good location. With a new chef and head waiter the restaurant, brasserie and bar could be busy and full of atmosphere. I do hope the management read these reviews - and not just the 5 star ones. I also wish that Tripadvisor hotel reviews could separate the hotel and restaurants.

Fantastic grounds with excellent view from bedroom window. Exceptional nights sleep, very comfortable bed & very peaceful. Price of room definitely reasonably priced, with excellent facilities, as was dinner. Would definitely stay again.

    « Whitworth Hall (revisited) »

This is our second visit to to this fantastic location and it was every bit as good as our visit a year ago in March 2015, this time we except the garden "The Dene" is open and a nice walk around there after dinner was good, well done ground staff, we stayed 3 nights and used the hotels restaurant each night the food was well prepared and tasted good. Well done all the team. The rooms were as usual clean comfortable and warm and well serviced, it was a good base to tour Durham

    « Feed the Deer! »

A lovely individual hotel, great food, very clean and comfortable rooms and friendly, helpful staff. An added bonus is the deer park where you can feed the deer. They come up to you, great photo opportunities.

« Great location, great staff and great food - what more do you need? »

Can't begin to thank Christopher and his excellent staff enough for what turned out to be a very memorable break. The food was outstanding. We ate in the Brasserie the first night - informal dining with good pub type food in a beautiful conservatory. The second night we were in the Library restaurant. My husband has eaten at some of the finest restaurants in the land, and said the Library was equal to the best of them - and such amazing value! I stay at many hotels on business, and I loved every minute of our stay. The deer park, lake and grounds and are just so beautiful and tranquil. You can only hear birds singing... The staff are so lovely and warm, We stayed in room 23 with a dual aspect, right at the end of the corridor. Dont forget to look up the stairs when in the bar, as the ceiling will amaze you. A nice, small, intimate hotel (only 29 rooms I believe). The bathroom probably needed an update, but judging from the clear and continuous improvements being made by the management this will be in hand in the near future. One small point, if you are looking for a peaceful break, I would recommend checking with the hotel before you book to ensure there is not a wedding taking place during your stay as this could disrupt the peaceful nature of the hotel. All in all a lovely place - we will return!

    « Wish we'd found the Brasserie »

When we were looking for somewhere to stay overnight near Spennymoor, Whitworth Hall was the clear choice with great reviews here and elsewhere. The location of the hotel is lovely and the friendly welcome from Amber when we arrived set the tone. We had a dinner, bed and breakfast rate, so booked a table for later and followed her clear directions to our room, #3, which was fine - a little dated, but clean and comfortable with a good view of the surrounding parkland on two sides. We went down for a drink in the bar and were surprised by the rather elaborate menu, but made our choices and were shown to our table in the restaurant. There were just a couple of other diners there that evening, which was surprising since there had been several people in the bar earlier - perhaps we had missed an alternative option? Never mind - in no time at all, amuse-bouches were being brought. Sadly, though the ambitious menu and the attentive, white-gloved service suggested fine dining, the food itself was a disappointment. The fish and pork belly were overcooked and dry and we found ourselves wishing there had been a simpler option (how come we didn't know about the Brasserie?) As a result, the memory of Whitworth Hall which we took away was of a mediocre, over-ambitious meal rather than of a perfectly good, three star hotel in a lovely parkland setting.

« Hotel in a peaceful and tranquil location with great food »

Back in February we decided that it would make sense to stay in County Durham, an area that over the years we had visited en route when vacationing in Northumbria. We eventually decided on the Whitworth Hall Hotel which looked to be in the right location, and offering the facilities we were looking for. Our telephone enquiry and reservation for the Easter weekend in March were dealt with efficiently and we accepted and paid in advance £456.20 for two persons for three nights on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast Advanced Purchase basis. We checked in late in the afternoon and decided to dine in the evening in the attractive Library restaurant. Because we had paid in advance we enquired what the menu arrangements were. The answers were slightly confusing because it would seem that the restaurant offers meal deals through Living Social. But when we explained that we had booked directly we were pleased when we were told that we could order any choice of food from both menus. The food was prepared and presented to a very high standard by courteous and friendly staff. But we had an unpleasant surprise when presented by a bill exceeding £92! More confusion. It would seem that we had not been told that our booking included Dinner only to a certain value per person. I always take the view that a judgement of service and standards is best made on how problems are solved. In this case the manager on duty made immediate apologies for the bill (we had refused to sign the bill), realising that their booking confirmation deals did not mention any conditions regarding meals, and that they would amend their future confirmation procedures. During our meals staff were happy to engage in conversation, and we were surprised to learn that many had only recently commenced at the hotel. However we were very impressed by their helpfulness and friendliness. For our second evening there was a change of manager, but he had been fully briefed by his colleague about the previous evening's confusion. He immediately made himself know to us to again apologise. It seemed to us that the hotel, and restaurant, are making a clear and determined effort to make themselves a premier destination. If our experience is anything to go by I suspect that they will succeed. Excellent staff (including the ever efficient and friendly Amber on reception), great chefs, and an idyllic location, makes a devastating combination. Thank you Whitworth Hall. A pity about the billing, oterwise the rating would have been a five

Superb country hotel with a deer park in the heart of County Durham. A great base for sightseeing in the Durham Dales, visting students at Durham University or seeing the new epic outdoor show 'Kynren' (elevenarches.org) in Bishop Auckland in 2016.

Delightful environment and location. Perfect for breaking my journey North & South. Pleasant efficient staff, and lovely food all complemented a relaxing break. Room was bright and airy, with all the accepted standards of a good hotel. Certainly looking for a reason to stay again in the future.

« Great hotel, fantastic location »

I had seen the hotel pictures and chose it for its location while we visited family in Durham, we were not disappointed, deer roaming free in the park that you could feed, very nice. We stayed for 3 nights over the new year, we had a room with a four poster bed which was lovely, the food in the restaurant was excellent too, I would recommend this hotel without hesitation as a destination in the north east.

    5
    « Thoroughly Enjoyable Stay »

A thoroughly enjoyable stay. Great room, impressive historic building, beautiful setting, excellent service, top rate breakfast, plenty of parking, helpful staff. Their deer park was closed for grass reseeding but could still watch the herd of deer grazing and crossing the adjacent pasture. Will definitely be back.

« So friendly, great atmosphere and Really Good food »

Set in the countryside with a deer park opposite the front of the hotel it is the perfect place to relax. The staff are friendly and welcoming and very helpful and the food that we ate from the Celeriac Soup to the Gnocchi was excellent. Our room included an enormous bed which was incredibly comfortable. We stayed on a DBB deal with Living Social and the overall value was excellent

« Stayed here with my wife and daughter on the way up to an open day for my daughter at Newcastle University. »

We didn't know this part of the world so we were concerned as to what the area and the hotel would be like. We shouldn't have been worried at all - it exceeded our expectations. The staff were very attentive and friendly, the food was delicious, the rooms were very clean, and the bed was the most comfortable hotel bed that I've ever slept in - all in the most wonderful, quiet setting. I now hope my daughter gets into Newcastle Uni so that we can come back......

Fantastic hotel, friendly staff and top quality food. This place is a superb hotel great rooms and amazing restaurants. Deer in the grounds. You must put this on your list to stay when in the North East, I stayed here for two nights whilst I was working in the North East and found it the perfect base to get to where I needed to be, close to A1 and other main link roads

We've stayed here twice. Love Whitworth hall. Beautiful location, peaceful and tranquil. Beautiful rooms. Dined in the library restaurant. The food was delicious, but the service was slow. The staff were very nice though. Breakfast was great too. Highly recommended.

    « It's a "Bobby-Dazzler" »

The ancestral home of Bobby Shafto exudes charm a plenty, set in acres of deer park the setting is glorious. We've stayed here several times, this time we had room 4 (the largest) and it certainly met with expectations. The bed, as all the beds we've slept in here was very comfortable indeed, it was clean and tastefully decorated. The downside was just that the bath tape were constantly dripping. However as always it's the warmth and friendliness of the staff that deserves particular mention, without them it would just be a well kept museum. the breakfast was as always excellent.

Took advantage of a relaxing stay here through isiton. This is set in lovely grounds and even got up close to several deer. Perfect short break and will be returning at some point.

« A very pleasant place to stay »

Only stayed for one night but would happily stay again. The location is set in amongst lots of very tame deer which you can fed if you wish. All the staff were very attentive, in particular the duty manager, Prem Lal ( I think that was his name) who had a wonderful nature. Room was generally very nice, good sized bath, although the pillows weren't brilliant. Evening dinner in the conservatory area was very good with excellent fillet steak and salmon. Happily stay again next time we're in the area

    « Valentine Deal »

This was my first visit, we were with family who has stayed previous, always having a good experience. Check in was smooth, the lady on reception was a little robotic, queries were addressed with a very monotone response, however arriving at the room i was surprised at the size and the bed pushed into the corner of the room, against the external wall, room wasn't as clean as you'd see in a modern hotel, but this is an old building and a beautiful one, so these are issues i wasn't too concerned by.. other rooms are much bigger so perhaps a reduced rate for the smaller room, especially when your view is the rubbish bins.. We decided to have afternoon tea, which was nice, service was slow, however staff were attentive when they got to you. We had a nice walk around the area and feed the deer, id recommend walking out and about as its views are stunning. On the evening we ate in the Library Restaurant, service was fantastic here, and food was excellent. The only thing that could add to the atmosphere of the very silent dining room would be music at an audible level, we had to whisper to each other to not be the entertainment as it appeared no other table were having any interaction and almost holding out for some entertainment... Then after the meal, the bar area isn't very welcoming sadly, again silent and a little chilly. The hotel has beautiful surroundings and is a wonderful building, however not really a 'fun' place to be. Room was ok to sleep in, however you are woken as soon as someone uses any of the water in next door rooms as old building old pipes, therefore creaking is heard, then noise of the corridor is heard clearly as mentioned earlier bed is against wall and next to the door. Breakfast was ok, pretty standard, they look after dietary requirements which is great, however its not at the same standard the evening meal was. Staff are friendly and helpful in restaurants, i may return, i would request a different room.

Stopped in September 2015 and had booked the four poster suite on a DBB rate. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds where you can feed the deer. Walk around the grounds and even visit the church. The staff were excellent except for a miserable waitress at breakfast. Food was superb and the room was magnificent. Would I recommend it YES and will I be going back? Definitely

    « 5 Star Valentine's Stay »

My girlfriend and I spent the night on Saturday 13th February 2016. The hotel itself is beautiful, set in picturesque surroundings with a stunning fallow deer park. Parking was ample and check-in was smooth. The receptionist was very helpful, friendly and greeted us with a smile. The room was extremely comfortable and very well furnished. A peaceful night's sleep was had by the both of us. The highlight of the night had to be the evening meal in the Library restaurant which was of a very high standard. We were welcomed with 2 glasses of complimentary champagne and a red rose for my partner which I thought was a very nice touch! The food was outstanding, and we particularly enjoyed the company of the restaurant manager who made us feel very much at ease. Breakfast again was superb, we both opted for the full cooked English which went down a treat. The bacon and eggs were cooked to perfection! After check-out we spent the rest of the morning feeding the deer. As my partner is a big animal lover this gave her a big thrill, a completely unique experience which sets Whitworth Hall apart from other hotels in the region. Food for the deer is available at £1 a bag from reception. I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone looking to get away for a nice break in luxurious surroundings. Some great memories will be taken away from the weekend and we hope to return soon!

    « afternoon tea »

My 2 sisters and I took my mother for afternoon tea as part of her 90th birthday celebrations. We chose Whitworth Hall as it is a quality venue but the afternoon tea we were served was anything but. It was the cheapest, put together spread I have ever seen and wouldn't have served it to anyone. We couldn't even decide what the filling was in one of the finger sandwiches, we decided it was egg paste! and the ham was just grissle. No fancy cakes as you would expect on an afternoon tea just slices of cake cut from a cheap bar of cake, a mediocre scone and a moussey thing served in a shot glass that you couldn't get your spoon into to eat the fruit compote at the bottom! The whole thing was cheap and nasty. I would have complained but it was my mother's special occasion so didn't want to make a fuss. Such a shame because we enjoyed walking around the beautiful grounds and the service was good but we won't be returning for afternoon tea.

    « Valentine weekend »

Spent the night here for Valentine, Can not fault the hotel, rooms clean, hotel grounds were lovely, food was lovely, but I have to say that apart from one member of staff being pleasant, all other members were very misserable, don't think any of them smiled. Which is the reason I would not stay here again The breakfast was lovely but waited 45 mins to get our order taken, and that was only because I asked. A couple before us left without food as they waited that long Such a shame as could be an outstanding hotel if they could train there staff to be pleasant

    « Valentine Treat »

Booked through booking.com however on arrival the young man on reception told us he did not have our reservation . He didn't seem bothered and made no effort to to resolve the issue . We gave him our booking .com reference but he said 'that meant nothing' ! I phoned booking .com and the very helpful gentleman there assured us that we did have a reservation and said he would ring the hotel immediately and asked me to stay on the line . Eventually the matter was resolved but the young man on reception really needs some 'tips' on customer service . Putting that matter aside we enjoyed our stay . The room was clean and comfortable . The 'Valentine' meal in the library was lovely and the staff in the restaurant did a fabulous job . Breakfast was very nice but we had quite a wait to be served . It was extremely busy and more staff were needed. All in all we had a lovely evening .

    « A Little gem in Spennymore »

We stopped off at Whitworth Hall last Sunday Feb 7th., It's cracking hotel in a great setting. The room was spotless, a good size and well furnished. We were made very welcome. The deal I got was excellent £134.00 D,B&B [this included a generous £32.00 allowance each towards dinner] which I suppose must be their "off season" rate !... The food was superb and the wine list comprehensive and not expensive ! [the house red at £14.95]. I'd like to go back there in the summer to enjoy fully the gardens and grounds, It will cost a little more then perhaps but will Im sure be worth it.

« Excellent hotel with character. One of the better Best Western hotels! »

This was our second stay at Whitworth Hall. The grounds of the hotel are surronded by hundreds of deer in beautiful countryside. The hotel is not your typically modern hotel but it has a class and style of its own befitting it's country surroundings. The hotel has bags of character and is very comfortable. It has clearly had some updating since our last visit but even then, it was a really pleasant hotel to stay in. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The meals in the restaurant are of excellent quality, however probably best to ask to see the Brasserie menu as well as the a la carte menu as it gives more choice, and better value if dining on a budget.

    5
    « A hidden gem »

Booked via Travelzoo for five of us, bed, breakfast and dinner and had a very enjoyable stay. The bedrooms and bathrooms in all three rooms were big and spotlessly clean, with pleasant decor and lovely and warm. The food was excellent with a good choice on the menu, and the staff were very welcoming and efficient, and breakfast was cooked to order. The park looked lovely and couldn't believe how many deer there were, understandably with all the rain access was restricted to the paths around the deer park as it was very boggy. There is a small children's play area and attractive lake in the grounds and ample free car parking. At £99 per room the price was very good value and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

All staff at Whitworth Hall did everything possible to ensure we enjoyed our stay, a warm friendly welcome, smiles and greetings from everyone and a bottle of Prosecco in our room. I understand that the hotel is in the process of being updated however our bedroom was spacious and warm with a lovely view and had an enormous comfy bed. We enjoyed an afternoon tea on arrival, had a wander around the deer park then headed back to enjoy our prosecco before drinks in the bar then a delicious dinner in The Library Restaurant. As a coeliac requiring a gluten free diet I must commend the chef, I had mentioned being coeliac when booking and this was remembered through each meal. A lovely relaxing stay. Thank you

    « Very Satisfying »

This was a booking in a private room for family to celebrate a senior members birthday and several rooms were required for overnight stays. We found the staff helpful and polite from the outset and there was a sense of professionalism and genuine interest across the board. There was no sign of the artificial smile which so often manifests itself in staff, all were lively, keen, and genuinely friendly and helpful. 18 people including 5 children gathered for the meal. Meet and greet drinks were dispensed without delay and the bar was well covered, missing the usual 'abandoned periods' which many hotel bars suffer from. The food was pre ordered and easily covered almost every item on the menu but a high standard was maintained and service was efficient and quick. We stuck to the brasserie menu for ease of choice but no-one had anything but praise for the standard of the food. Those staying over were quite pleased with the rooms and found them clean and well appointed. The building is very old and retains much of the original character. This means there might be the odd draught and sticking window catch but this, in my opinion adds to the experience. Our stay in the Shaftoe Room, with its quaint four poster bed was very pleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Again staff were very ably attending to guests needs and there was absolutely nothing to complain about. The full English was very tasty, hot, and freshly cooked. Other variants were equally tasty and all of the group were well satisfied with a hearty start to their day, well fed for their journeys home. The hotel is situated within a country park and a large herd of Fallow Dear are resident there. This is an attraction for guests and locals who come to see these wonderful animals and feed them. Food is available at reception for a small fee but a bag of carrots does not go amiss for the almost tame animals who are always up for a feed. Our whole experience at Whitworth Hall was thoroughly enjoyed and the staff were a big part of this, each end every one of them deserving a thank you for their friendly, efficient demeanour. Rarely have I seen a hotel which scores so many positives. They have a pride in their hotel and their work and the customer benefits greatly from this. We will certainly use this wonderful location again.

« Birthday treat - just had to stay over! »

For a birthday treat, I booked a room for the night as we already had a booking for dinner in The Library. At £81 via booking.com it was marginally more than taxis to/from home - but included breakfast! We stayed in room 26 on the ground floor overlooking the back of the hotel. It was comfortable, clean and tidy. Check-in was easy, drinks in the bar are not badly priced and breakfast the following morning was superb. I hear the hotel have plans for improvements, maybe increase from 3 to 4 stars, no doubt this will result in rooms being refurbished but I was happy with the current standard.

    « Xmas gift »

We got married at this hotel in 2009, so we were excited to receive an overnight stay with dinner bed and breakfast as a Xmas gift. Upgraded to an executive room (only £10) which guarantees a view over the deer park. Lovely big room with a very comfortable bed. Managed to get an early check in, staff were all very pleasant, a credit to the hotel. 3 course evening meal was delicious as was breakfast the following morning. Couldn't fault our stay and hope to visit again soon.

Check in nice and easy.. had to walk past bar to get to and from bed room which I didn't like.. Room was a decent size on ground floor.. A couple of faults with room.. 1st.. Big heavy curtains which when closed cover the radiator. so you lift the onto the window cill which spoils the look of room... 2nd.. Room not as clean as it first looked...Dust on plenty of surfaces..table clean but on pictures ect its been a while since they were dusted down.. Overall I would stay here again..

    « A Blissfull Retreat »

The reason I chose this beautiful country hotel was first of all for the setting. For me the fact that it is set in a picturesque deer park made this a dream come true. I requested an upgrade to a room overlooking the park and the receptionist granted my wish immediately. When we arrived the receptionist informed me that I had a fabulous room and I was not disappointed. It was well worth the upgrade and I would definitely recommend this to future guests. The room itself was absolute luxury and immaculate. It was lovely and warm too. The meals were delicious. The service was faultless. All the hotel staff were so friendly, polite and professional. What more can I say except that I can't wait to return to celebrate this New Years Eve ! Oh and I even fed the Deer on New Years Day and took some wonderful photos.

    « STUNNING »

We were visiting some friends for a long weekend and booked in here for 3 nights. What a beautiful setting this hotel is situated in. The staff are most welcoming and very friendly, nothing is too much trouble. We were shown to our room which was very clean, spacious and cosy. The restaurant food was excellent as was the selection for breakfast. So glad we went just after Christmas as we were lucky enough to see the massive beautifully decorated tree in the bar area by the stairs. Thank you all for making our stay a first class one, will definitely be coming to stay with you when visiting our friends in future.

    « Lovely quiet location »

This was a lovely location and stunning hotel where all the staff were friendly and helpful. I would immediately recommend this as a get away location for romantic couples or those who wish to enjoy a peaceful break. The food is excellent in the ala carte restaurant and reasonably priced with a varied selection. The surrounding area and parkland lends itself to aiding the tranquillity of the hotel. I would certainly consider this location as a venue for any future Wedding plans my Girlfriend and I may have. Thank you everyone at the hotel.

Arrived here and was welcomed most wonderful and felt at ease though you have to walk through the bar lounge to get to your room which I felt a bit unsure about.Room on first impression very nice and clean then the things appear to make you think. Remote for tv not working so went to reception to ask if they had replacement batteries to which I was told they will see and let me know ,That was at 4pm.Awaited all night and nothing so that meant no remote had to keep getting up so in end turned TV off. It would have been a tad polite to let us know if they could have replaced them or not but nothing. The deal included a meal for two and all I can give 100% credit to the staff in the restaurant .Stars they were so that was a good experience ,Returned back to room to find out the radio on the clock was not working even though had been tested only a few months previous so no tv with remote and no radio. Whilst I was checking the cable. it was full of dust and hairs so as you do I checked the headboard and pictures .Full of dust .Pity anyone with breathing problems .Sorry but the room needs to be fully dusted and vacuumed behind the cabinets. Breakfast time and yet again great service from the waiting on staff .It is pleasant place to stay but its the little things that make the big difference. Felt ignored re batteries even though 2 of the staff had been informed but hey ho its not worth informing the guest whose paying that unfortunately nothing can be done (maybe because we were there for 1 night) .That incident has made an impression as well as the dust .All in all it is a nice place to stay and the waiting on staff are excellent and cheery but check ya remote and the dust

    « Excellent stay »

I have just returned from a wonderful two night stay at Whitworth Hall. The hotel is set is beautiful grounds and the deer park has a lot of deer which are absolutely sweet. I was particularly impressed by the standard and fittings of the room and the bathroom. They had thought of absolutely everything from the rubber mat for the bottom of the bath through the radio alarm clock up to the swivel bracket on the TV and the ample room lighting and cosy and high quality furnishings. Also I would like to mention the excellent quality of the bedlinen, matress and pillows, the latter with hygienic padded inner linings. No expense has been spared here, and the housekeeping was excellent. The wifi in the room was instant and free. The public areas are extremely well kept and clean with interesting period features, and the library restaurant, in the oldest part of the house, is a magnificent room. The steak was excellent, highly recommended. The staff were welcoming and helpful in every way (special thanks to manager Steve - the handsome one with the beard!) I was more than happy with my stay and will be returning!

« Really lovely Hotel with great settings »

Stayed here during a recent business trip, what a really lovely place to stay - great surprise with the deer park within the grounds and able to walk round and see them at close quarters. The rooms are really comfortable and there is a good choice of food within the three restaurants ranging ala carte to bar food, good choice of breakfast but can be a bit pricy. All in all though a really nice place to stay if your in the area or if looking for a nice weekend break away

    « Great Stay »

The Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel, Durham is one of the best hotels that I have had the pleasure to stay. Not only are the grounds exceptional with a large herd of resident deer, but the hotel has the old charm that you would expect from a country house setting. The staff also make you very welcome so that it feels more like staying with friends than being away on business.

« Another trip to Whitworth Hall »

Another great short break at this lovely Hotel.Set in a large Deer park this is an excellent place to get away from it all & experience some lovely peace & quiet!. Lovely room & the Christmas decorations & decor of the hotel are fabulous.!The history surrounding the hotel of course is set around Bobby Shafto who actually was real! & indeed lived & owned the place for a while & his tomb is in the lovely church adjacent to the Hall.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane Whitworth Hall is a lovely hotel. Staff friendly and v efficient. Food excellent. Fantastic period building set in beautiful grounds. « Potential but needs work »

Lovely hotel with so much potential and nice staff but just not right. We booked evening meal in library but looked at menu in room and preferred brasserie so asked to swap which was sorted by reception . But brasserie was cold and drafty as conservatory type room and windy, cold night. No atmosphere at all just 2 couples and then a group of 6 as we finished- few more in restaurant but not packed- yet we had been told 'it was busy as Xmas event in deer park on' not sure where all were? Food was ok- I had the fishcake starter for my main- bland and colourless - not on a par with my homemade ones nor Aldi's where you can see fish! Partners steak was nice though. Service pleasant but slow. Room was nice but cold despite radiator on- think needs bleeding? ? After dinner went to bar and waited quite a while for drinks as no staff on bar- another couple were saying goes the same too. A month before Xmas most places like this would have Xmas parties on? Rooms were set up for something - maybe for Sunday but all light on for several hours and no one in- turn them off and save money! !. Has huge potential but lacking in atmosphere. Maybe only open one restaurant and change menu so suits all - a large carte was pricey and brasserie similar to pub menu- take a few from each may be a suggestion? Would stay again but needs more atmosphere

This is a very good hotel, high specification, excellent service and great quality food. Located in a stunning country park surrounded by deer. I will be back, my only negative would be that my bed was too soft, but that personal preference

« Relaxed hotel 8 miles from Durham »

We enjoyed 2 nights at the hotel and enjoyed meals in the restaurant on both nights. The hotel and gardens are both of a high standard and the staff are friendly & helpful. We would be happy to stay again.

    « Lovely relaxing break. »

We have stayed at this hotel a few times now and love going back knowing we will have a relaxing time. We are two adults and one ten year old girl. We stayed in a family room, number 30, which is spacious, clean and comfortable. The reception staff are friendly and welcoming as are all the staff who work in the bar and restaurant. We had some drinks in the lounge bar which was lovely and also an evening meal in the main restaurant which was superb. You can buy deer food from the reception and feed the deer in the park which is great for kids and adults alike. There is also a nice little walk around the grounds and a quaint church nearby to look round. We will be back again soon.

« Very pleasant overnight stay. »

We stayed with friends just for one night visiting Durham Lumiere, which was excellent. A nice clean hotel, with pleasant staff Had a pleaseant lunch, and a good breakfast. We would definitely stay here again if we were to be in the area.

« Lovely but poor breakfast service »

We have stayed here many times and always had good service and a lovely time. This visit however, we had very poor service at breakfast on both days. Two members of staff were looking after both restaurants. We had to ask for someone to take our order, then we received cold toast. The hotel was full due to the Lumiere, but the management should make extra staff available. Apart from this, a gorgeous room, lovely location and delicious food in the restaurant, where we had excellent service at dinner.

    « Always good »

After many visits here I was lucky enough to get room 1. A great room with a four poster bed and nice and quite as its at the end of the hotel upstairs. The staff are always pleasant and helpful. I just love the cooked breakfast, very traditional in the sense of its all cooked for you and not the help yourself that most hotels have moved to. There is a great evening meal selection with various special nights from curry night to Steak night. The wine selection is good and I would think everyone could easily choose a meal they liked. I will be back fairly soon and look forward to the stay.

« Lovely Hotel , great location and setting. »

Stayed for one night on business trip and found the food and facilities excellent. Room very comfortable and spacious. Food in the brasserie was very good with a decent choice . Staff all very helpful and pleasant. Would certainly stay again for business or pleasure.

« Great location and excellent staff »

The hotel is located is a lovely spot, with the herd of deer on the doorstep a bonus. From arrival to departure the staff could't have been more friendly/helpful. Apart from Breakfast I ate in the Brasserie and the choice and quality of food was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and the ingredients appeared to be locally sourced, not out of a bag from Walls, so a big plus for that. Happy to recommend Whitworth Hall

    « Wonderful Setting »

A wonderful setting, a country house hotel within a deer park. (be warned, a little noisy due to the rutting season) The hotel staff are welcoming & attentive, the food is good (a little pricey) and I can recommend the venison (just close the shutters first) I found the deserts rather disappointing - I felt rather let down (it was as if they had run out of what was ordered and tried to fake it) the room (21) was quiet and pleasantly appointed. Overall - 8 out of 10

« Perfect service in a perfect setting »

The hotel is set in a huge park with deer roaming within 10 meters of the front door. The communal rooms , corridors etc are just beautiful and our first floor room was large, pretty and very comfortable. Breakfast was cooked to perfection and the staff was lovely. The place feels very welcoming and luxurious but unpretentious. We did not try the restaurant but the food in the bistro was very good indeed - and inexpensive. Will certainly be back.

    « Deer lightful »

Every aspect of the hotel was superb. The beds and pillows were incredibilly comfortable and the food in the restaurant and bar was tasty and good value. The chef's pie and gammon were simply to die for! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Feeding the deer was a highlight of our Whitworth Hall experience.

« Good stay but can be LOUD »

We stayed here recently for a family wedding, as a Diamond member normally an early checkin isn't a problem, on this case it seemed to be. In fairness the room was then sorted for us to checkin but this took c.45mins, they seemed a little taken aback when questioned over the 'perk' of early checkin. Z bed was placed in the room instead of a cot, asked 3 times for this to be changed and I am still waiting. Luckily a cot was placed in the mother-in-laws room (in addition) so we avoided risking our 1yr old rolling off a bed through the night. Facilites are good, location is very nice and the deer are a nice touch... my only real issue is the sheer volume from functions that go on late into the night, how guests staying through the week for business can abide this I genuinely don't know as I found it a bit much and was a guest at the function. Brekafast was nice but could have been better staffed (only one staff member completely run off her feet)

« Country Hotel with extensive estate »

Lovely old house in extensive estate with its own deer park. Great to pull curtains back in the morning and find a large herd of deer peacefully grazing! This place has history and character. The staff and food were pretty good too.

    « Excellent Meals »

Stayed there for two nights in October 2015. Meals were excellent, room clean and comfortable and staff were very friendly and helpful. We had dinner there on both nights and the venison was as good as I have ever had. Breakfasts were fresh and cooked to order.

« A pleasant stay away from town »

Just what you need at the day's end when having worked long hours. The staff were attentive - perhaps a little too much in the restaurant but that is certainly better than other places where one is invisible. The food was well received by all our party. Beds crisp and rooms clean

    « Lovely Location »

We stayed for 3 nights and would certainly recommend. The hotel is in a very quiet location and stands in grounds with a large deer herd. Our room was very large, our bed comfortable, the coffee etc. were well stocked, towels fluffy and we could control our own heating. Breakfast was good and the cooked items were prepared when ordered. We ate in the Brasserie and had a lovely meal.

    « Wedding »

The wedding was in the church, as short walk from the hotel, it was lovely as was the vicar. The wedding reception was great, not so keen on the shape of the function room, but was still a fantastic day/night.

I found this hotel by accident. I have used this hotel 3 times since. The rooms are large and very comfortable. Food is great and reasonable (around £20 for 2 courses and a pint) WIFI can be sketchy but always a good excuse for leaving the laptop switched off and relaxing.

« Peaceful and Relaxing Country Retreat »

Spent a night here with my Wife whilst on Family business. We loved the peaceful and relaxing escape from the modern world. Staff were welcoming, attentive and courteous from reception thru to the waiting staff in the restaurant and bar. We enjoyed the dinner in the main dining room. The steaks were delicious and good value. The Brie starter was delightful too. Breakfast menu and buffet was varied and the hot dishes to order were freshly cooked and served quickly and politely. The tinned fruit for cereals and watered down orange juice were a let down though! A huge thanks to Amber and Rebecca at reception. Also, thanks to Jonny and Dean in the dining room. All staff were very good and looked after us well during our brief stay. Thank you. Overall, we'd recommend this hotel and we'd stay here again should we be in the area.

    « Fantastic day.... »

Went to see the deer and have Sunday lunch ...Even though the deer park was closed we were still able to feed them with the food we bought at reception. The weather was brilliant so had a lovely walk around the grounds and through the church yard. Lunch was fab and the service was great. Big thankyou to Gina Kelly who really made us all welcome and gave us a giggle. Great to be able to sit outside too as it was so warm. Definitely going back soon

« No hyperbole is too superlative »

Fantastic location excellent friendly cheerful attentive staff great decor great food and the experience of feeding deer. Cram it into one sentence doesn't do justice to this true gem. Absolutely awesome. We went to relax and came away chilled and wishing we'd booked a longer stay. The sea bass and the curry as evening meals were nicely presented and exceptional in taste whilst the scrambled egg and salmon for breakfast was just as good. A real treat we will be back
