    « Lies »

My room was booked with a confirmation number months ahead of time. When I got to the hotel, my room had been sold out from under me, to a "sick old lady." I was told they would get a taxi to take me to the hotel where they had rebooked me without telling me ahead of time. Well, they ordered a taxi for me, that much was true; I had to pay for it. They also said dinner was on them....not true. I came back to the hotel for dinner and had to pay for it myself. My entire experience at this hotel was a pack of lies.

« Good service under pressure »

The barman Perry took our order for food and drink. He was immediately inundated with a coachwork of ladies wanting drinks quick as the buses engine was running! He ensured our order was dealt with without delay. Well done Perry The food was excellent and the coffee hot and strong. Will

« Comfort, Service and Value »

On our second visit after a couple of years it was reassuring to find that the Argyll Hotel continues to set high standards in every aspect and that management have continued to invest in both staff and amenities to ensure a most enjoyable stay for visitors. This time round we were especially impressed by the friendliness of staff, the quality of the food and....not least... the large, fluffy towels in the bedrooms ! All of these combined to make this weekend break really relaxing and enjoyable.

    « Excellent - Great Stay »

After reading a recent review with regards to being transferred to the sister hotel I decided to phone the morning of our arrival to confirm our booking. Which I'm pleased i did, as I was advised that their was a problem with the shower in the room that would be allocated to us. We book this as a DBB for a 2 night stay which was a great deal, I advised the member of staff Paulina that I needed a guarantee that on arrival we would be checking into the Argyll and not the sister hotel. Paulina advised me she would need to speak to her manager and get back to me which she did promptly. I was advised that if we arrived on the Saturday for x 1 night we could have DBB complimentary which I found to be very satisfactory. The hotel is lovely , food was great and all staff attentive. We had a lovely room with fantastic views and on arrival we were greeted my Paulina who was very helpful and arranged for complimentary drinks on arrival. We also had a bottle of wine put into the room lovely touch. I must say I was very impressed by the service received complimentary stay including Dinner & Breakfast and drinks. Well done The Argyll Hotel will definitely return. ????

« Love love loved it »

What a beautiful place to stay. We stayed here as my Mum worked here about 60 years ago so sentimental to me. The rooms are lovely and clean and a huge amount of room for your stuff as we are a group of 3 adults. Staff are so friendly and will always give you a smile. I highly recommend staying here we loved it.

    « Very good »

Rooms are nice and big. Bathrooms are tidy. Prices are good and it really is a lovely stay. Would come here again. Food is lovely. And a lot of storing places in your room. Close to a lot of pubs and other shops

    « Excellent location »

Stayed here for a family break with my husband, 2 kids, father in law & sister & brother in law & cannot fault it the staff are lovely especially Lorraine who was an absolute STAR she attended to our every need & the kids loved her!! Yes the place is a bit dated but that adds to the character but the main thing it is clean!! The food is gorgeous from the breakfast to the tradition restaurant & the Italian restaurant we loved every dish we ordered & big sized portions we will definitely b back ??

« Check ahead before arrival »

We booked this hotel through a Hotel Booking website and our booking was confirmed. However when we arrived at the hotel we were told we were being transferred to a sister hotel. It was very annoying that the hotel hadn't contacted us beforehand about this. Thus failing to give us an opportunity to research the suitability of that hotel and accept or decline it.

    « Lovely surprise »

We booked this hotel on the morning of arrival as had very sudden two days free . With such a great price for DBB we weren't expecting too much to be honest. However from the moment of check in to check out were blown away. The staff could not have been more pleasant or accommodating. The room a lovely sea view, the most comfortable poster bed, a large, clean bathroom with good shower well as bath and two chairs looking out the water to relax have a pre dinner drink. We are in the Rio restaurant. The food delicious with a good variety both nights , again, service was spot on. The central location meant that we were minutes from shops etc and we took advantage of the weather to get some long walls along front in. We cannot wait return.

« Overnight stay with friends »

Excellent location 2 mins drive from ferry terminal. Hotel is spotlessly clean, staff really helpful and friendly. Big comfy beds and breakfast was excellent., travelled with another couple and had a great time can't wait to return again.

    « Good value »

Stayed at the Argyll for one night at the start of October. No parking at the hotel but there is a free car park just across the road. Very friendly welcome and good selection of bar meals although there is also an Italian restaurant in the hotel. A little bit noisy in the late evening but it all quietened down before midnight and I got a good nights sleep. Breakfast was a good selection of buffet and cooked food and again the staff were very friendly and helpful. Slightly dated feel to the place but still good value for money and would definitely stay there again.

    « second time here »

first time at Argyll was through work with a few work mates and could not fault anything. back up with wife on the 7/10/16 and yet again perfect. location perfect staff could"nt have been more helpful and friendly, food in both restaurants were to a very high standard.

    2
    « Where to start! »

Great location. Needs more staff. Lift needs looking at (does not fill one with confidence). Needs new mattresses, we had three beds in our room so able to change the creaky unpadded old spring one, but then it was like sleeping on a bed of concrete!.(like Goldilocks but at least she found a decent one) Went for a pre paid breakfast but got fed up with waiting to be ask what we would like so left. All in all not a very good experience. Have stayed in better Best Westerns.

« Comfortable stay; very friendly staff »

Stayed at the Argyll for one night at the end of June while I was in town for a job interview. The hotel is in an ideal, lovely location, just a few minutes' walk from the Gourock-Dunoon ferry, and adjacent to the busy 'main street' of Dunoon. I was welcomed by the friendly check-in staff who were most accommodating when I requested a late checkout. The hotel restaurant menu was extensive and very tasty; I enjoyed a great dinner there when I arrived in the evening. The hotel is obviously an old one, but the rooms are comfortable and very clean. I had a very enjoyable stay!

    « Value for Money »

After touring and staying in different hotels for the last eight days this one came as a surprise. The cheapest one by far with a bar and restaurant with very low prices compared to the others. Big selection of everything with fair sized portions. Bedroom overlooked the sea and with a four poster bed. Very Good.

    « holiday »

nice hotel very clean slightly dated but no complaints most of the staff were very nice the food was wonderful and plenty choices too near everything we wanted ie ferry buses etc will go back there again we were there from mon to fri with a coach party felt there could have been more evening entertainment but what we did have was very enjoyable didnt find it all noisy at nights would recommend it only problem i had was the cards for opening the door for some reason ours never worked most days i had to take it to reception to get swiped again apart from that which wasnt a big issue we thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the hotel and dunnoon

« Great location, good food and nice rooms »

Stayed for one night only as part of our honeymoon, booked a room with four poster bed with stunning views over the pier and out to sea. We ate at the main bar for dinner and food was very good (brekkie included was also very good), with reasonable prices. Would definitely stay here again, beautiful aprt of the world. Note whilst the hotel doesnt have its own car park, free parking is available by the pier front all day for free and is within a hundred yards of hotel entrance.

    « Room 33 »

This is an ok hotel - clean enough but room very dated - thought I was back in the 70s. It really wouldn't take much to make this hotel stunning, the bones are there but it feels unloved. Stayed 2 nights. The breakfast seemed unorganised, not enough staff to cope, lots of the continental breakfast choices empty and not replaced in a timely manner. Cooked breakfast ok as included in room price but would not have been impressed if had to pay their asking price. Our view from room was into a side street as the room is downstairs in what I can imagine might have been the basement. The staff were friendly enough, but for the money I think there could have been a nicer choice at another property.

    3
    « Could do better »

We were staying 5 days and had a room with a beautiful view fortunately as the rest of it let us down. We had a lot of trouble with our room key card and eventually had to have the hotel's own master key. Breakfast was very average, surprised to see they didn't serve square sausage! One evening having a meal with a few guests of ours one meal was approx 15-20 mins after everyone else had theirs, not ideal. One quite obvious piece of dirt wasn't cleaned for our whole stay. Not impressed at all although apart from the cleaner our complaints were dealt with in a friendly and helpful manner.

    « Good hotel »

A very Comfortable tidy and well kept hotel in a beautiful part of the world. Staff are very pleasant and there is a good selection of food for breakfast from fruit, cereal and a full cooked breakfast.

« Done us a massive favour, we found much better. »

Travelled nearly 500 miles, to be told on arrival-- Oh, we have let someone else have your booked room. Room was booked for over a week BUT the manager said 'don't worry Sir you can stay in our (inferior--our assessment) sister hotel done the road for the same price'. To be fair the main management of the group did offer a free nights stay in their sister hotel in Dunoon. But we declined. It was a shame the previous hotel manager wasn't there any more, he had left just a few months earlier.

« Bar closed at early »

Came back about 9:45 to find the bar closed. The barman was leaving asked for a drink he did not look happy. He said did we wanted the bar opened we said yes. He gave us one drink each then closed the bar again. About twelve people in the bar no drink. Irish women went looking for staff could not find anyone. She phoned duty manager nothing could be done went to bed. Not a good end to a nice day.Would stay again but take a carryout just in case.

    « Great hotel »

We spent two nights in the Best Western Argyle Hotel. We had room 106. Lovely warm welcome on our arrival in the hotel. Room was clean and warm. Great view of the ferry terminal and the water. Fantastic meal in the restaurant. Steak pie was the best ever. Jam packed with meat. Rio restaurant was a bit disappointing for our second night. Staff are very helpful .

    4
« Blast from the Past »

Obviously very grand and stately in the past, and although the rooms have been updated tastefully, the general atmosphere has an aura of bygone days. There is very small and therefore disputed outdoor terrace where it is very pleasant to sit and enjoy a drink or snack while overlooking the bay in good weather. Breakfast was a little bit basic, but probably catered more than adequately to local tastes. Excellent for access to the pier for ferry and boat trips while still being in the centre of town. There is also free municipal parking directly opposite hotel.

    4
    « Great Location »

In walking distance of the passenger only ferry, shops, and other local sites. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had the top tower room which if you are a tall person (6' or taller), you may not want because of the slanted room in the bathroom. The bathroom is down about 5 stairs from the bedroom. Great views from this room but it can get warm - there is only 1 window that opens. However, it was also very roomy and comfortable.

    « Pleasant surprise! »

Had an overnight stay here recently as we were moving house. The staff were delightful and very helpful. It has obviously been a very grand building at one time but some of the decor is a little tired. Our bedroom however was a good size and very comfortable. We ate in the hotel and it was traditional, pub type menu which was fine. Breakfast was also good and once again all the staff were extremely pleasant.

    « murder mystery weekend...best for groups. »

Good weekend. Entertainment enjoyable. Band on first night were v. good. Well worth the price. We paid extra for tower room. One comment I would make on the murder mystery part is that on our weekend there were 4 large groups (mainly all women), plus myself/partner, one other couple and 2 elderly sisters. The 4 groups were seated together on tables and we were put with the other 2 couples. It made for a rather odd weekend. The other couple and sisters were lovely. But we could not compete with the noise from the other groups. So may be best to go as a group than a couple.

    « Great weekend! »

We have just returned from a Murder Mystery weekend at the Argyll Hotel and we all had a fantastic time. Right from the start the staff were attentive and helpful, the rooms were nice and for a building of its age they were exceptionally clean and comfortable. The walking theatre company actors were absolutely fantastic and they made every effort to involve as many of the guests as they could. The food at the hotel was above average and the portions were good, we were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed all of our meals. For value for money these weekends would be hard to beat, two nights bed and breakfast, evening meals, murder mystery on each evening, then followed by a band on the first night and a j.dobbie1@virginmedia.com on the second night and a murder mystery trail around Dunoon on the Saturday. All for £99 each!!! Amazingly good value. We will definitely be back for another one of these weekends. Congratulations to all staff and actors, best weekend we have had in ages..

    « Allo Allo weekend »

A great mystery weekend based on allo allo , excellent entertainment all through the weekend not only that but the food was great and the staff and service were superb could not fault any part of the weekend. Looking forward to the next one.

« Ask for the Tower Room »

We were lucky enough to get the Tower Room. The hotel is starting to get tired but this room has windows on 3 sides at the top of the hotel and you get great views. We had a very comfortable night. The breakfast is nothing to write home about though but the staff were very friendly and helpful. They do not have a car park so you need to be careful about parking there.

    « Cowal games »

My daughter and I stayed here for the cowal games the room was comfy clean as was the bathroom. Lovely views from window. A little noisy if ur looking for an early.night with shows running. Breakfast lovely food in Rio restraunt fantastic friendly staff. A bit of an early alarm call at 4.15 am when fire alarms went off due to a guest smoking in room but was dealt with quickly and alarm switched off. See u all for the cowal games next year.

« Beautiful setting with Super service »

I rang the hotel to book a short break and the lady I spoke to upgraded our room. It was on the 2nd floor and was a dual aspect room with a king sized bed and seating area with two comfy tub chairs plus a desk and chair. The shower room was lovely and clean with plenty of fluffy towels and toiletries. We were pleasantly surprised that included in the upgrade was half board with a limited menu for both the Argyll restaurant and the Rio. Our first meal was taken at the Rio and the service and food were excellent. Despite the limited menu we had some lovely choices. The second night we tried the Argyll restaurant and I was slightly disappointed in that although the steak pie I had was lovely with tender lean meat, a lot of "Bisto" type gravy had been poured all over the pie which made the pastry soggy and spoiled the taste of the natural meat gravy in the pie. I have no idea why that was done. Also the peas were marrowfat from a tin when I would have expected, at least, frozen garden peas. The dessert was lovely. The lady who served us (blonde hair) produced lovely ice cream sundeas with the sauce of our choice and some cream. There was a waiter there who kept asking if everyone was "Happy, happy" Which got on ones nerves after a while although he was quite personable. The blonde lady and the lady with long dark hair, (who also served breakfast), were lovely and attentive. The long haired lady was particularly helpful to my partner, who is disabled. She was very kind. The breakfasts were excellent and served quickly and effeciently. We went back to the Rio for our last two meals. The waiting staff were excellent and the food was delicious. I had the stuffed mushroom starter on both nights and the sea bass as main course which was amazing. The fish was cooked to perfection, the roast vegetables were delicious and the skin on potatoes very tasty. A lot of locals seemed to go to Rio which is a good sign. It is a very nicely designed venue. We highly recommend Rio. What seems strange (If correct) is that all the food comes from the one kitchen? I found it unusual that the Rio menu was so sophisticated but the Argyll menu not so. Different chefs perhaps? One problem is the lack of parking immediately next to the hotel which, if one is disabled can be a problem. There is free parking on the road beneath the hotel and there is a lot of "free for 2 hours" disabled parking on the shopping street in Dunoon. We managed to get our luggage in and out and received a lot of assistance from both complete and very kind strangers both inside and outside the hotel as well as members of staff (who would not accept a tip). Some of these people were local and Scottish and some of them were not. Lovely people; all of them. Overall we had a lovely stay and recommend the Argyll to anyone looking for a base in the lovely town of Dunoon.

« Beautiful setting with average service »

We stayed for two nights. The hotel was chosen because it had lift access for my elderly mother who cannot climb the stairs. The rooms were clean and very comfortable and the views are spectacular. We ate dinner the first night in the Argyll restaurant. The waiter was very attentive and the food was excellent and very good value for money. The food at breakfast time was also very good however the waitress was less welcoming and I ordered smoked haddock and eggs for breakfast which came with a supplement charge whilst this is acceptable I thought that being asked for payment as she put the plate on the table very strange. Having had 2 good meals for our second evening we decided to try the hotels Rio restaurant. This proved to be a disappointment. The waiter was slightly short of rude his eyes rolling to the back of his head obviously impatient that my elderly mother was taking so long to choose what to eat then took an hour to serve our main course. Would I stay there again. maybe but I would avoid the Rio.

« Well worth the visit - Excellent in everything »

The room was perfect - front of the hotel, view out over the bay. Not much for younger folk but the hotel restaurant (Rio) was spot on, the food was full of flavour, the wine was fresh and the price was right. 5 star food, 5 star service throughout. VISIT!

    « great hotel »

great location. stayed one night for Dunoon revival day. Great staff, spacious clean room, good food in lounge bar at good prices. Overall 10/10.Would recommend this to anyone visiting Argyll area. So well situated you can relax to the last minute with refreshments as you can see your ferry docking.

    « Nice but a let down a little »

We stayed here for one night, the hotel itself was really nicely presented, clean and tidy and all the staff were very nice. We had booked it with plans to have an active day, then relax in the room in the evening. However when we returned to the room we descovered that the TV was not working. We told reception, but were told by the nice chap behind bar that the tv's in the whole hotel were not working. We were a little annoyed that we were not told this beforehand, is when booking or checking in, as a tv is listed on the room facilities and this fault had clearly been there before we arrived. So we felt this ruined our evening experience. Then When we decided to go to sleep and put out the lights, the lights in the room kept flickering on and off and making an annoying loud clicking noise. this stopped after about an hour, but as this was at midnight we didn't want to go down and start complaining. Plus reception closes at 11pm. This lights problem returned in the morning and wouldn't stop. We informed the girl on reception, who believed we were using the key card incorrectly, as key card used to switch in electricity in the room. But she didn't seem to believe when we said we had used it properly. We felt when we complained it was kind of brushed to the side as if it wasn't important . So all in all it was plesent during the day but the evening was ruined for us, we would honestly stay here again if these faults were fixed as it was a nice hotel.

    « Very nice stay »

The hotel is an excellent location, right on the front. Staff were lovely, very helpful and friendly. The whole hotel was very clean. we had dinner in the restaurant which was good and reasonably priced which is unusual for a hotel. Breakfast was ok although the continental consisted of just cereal and fruit. We didn't go until 30 mins before breakfast ended so not sure if there had been a bigger selection earlier. There was also no juice available, jugs were empty and weren't refilled. The only complaints I have is the the beds are very soft and the floorboards in our room squeaked like crazy, so if one of you was up and the other was trying to sleep it was extremely annoying. Also the lift must be the slowest in the world.

    5
« Great hotel and Staff »

Lovely hotel, very clean excellent food and very obliging staff. We were a coach party went last week and without exception all enjoyed it. Would certainly go again entertainment could have been improved upon but it didn't spoil anything I think when there are no coaches they don't have entertainment.

    « Disappointed »

Hotel was beautiful and room was clean tidy comfortable and very spacious. Unfortunately the staff let it down very badly. Due to being condescending rude and unhelpful on numerous occasions during our stay. One member of staff in particular who appeared to be bar/restaurant manager although funnily enough he was only one without name badge ?? completely spoiled our stay although he wasn't only one if a manager acts like he does then staff bound to follow. Anything we requested specially ie when asked for half portions due to my wife's ill health we were told after long periods of discussion between staff members and kitchen/managers etc that only certain meals could be served as half portions but not given list of what these were?? This made both myself and wife feel uncomfortable and alienated which resulted in us looking elsewhere in future to eat and stay when were back in area. perfect example and i quote "what meal you want that you can only eat half"wrote this down went away came back with said meals and said it be five pounds for half portion and then rushed off without asking if we had wanted starters, desserts or drinks !! We were then left in restaurant after getting our half portion with no staff and so i had to go to bar staff and order drinks for us to have with meal. Then we never saw anyone in restaurant again till we eventually got up and left and went to bar area and as soon as we did said manager appeared and locked up restaurant for night extremely quickly. At least an hour later said manager came over and said you "Happy Happy Happy when it was obvious from service we had recieved we were not he was very condescending and in your face. As I say this is just one example of many .

    « 25th Anniversary »

We went here for a two night stay and from the moment we stepped into the hotel we were made to feel very welcome. Greeted by Paulina at reception who is very friendly and helpful as were all the staff members. Manoj the manager was always checking and asking us if we needed anything and that we were happy with the service. The meals were great with a choice of two restaurants Italian or traditional. The staff were all great with special mention for Paul, Anna and Tomas who we saw most of the time.On the Wednesday we returned to our room after breakfast to see flowers and wine on the table from the hotel as it was our 25th anniversary a really nice touch. If we go back to Dunoon we would certainly stay at the Argyll.

    « Comfortable,clean,friendly,excellent food, lovely views »

The hotel is near all the amenities and gives excellent service. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was very good and the shower was very powerful - really important to us. I also have to give my compliments to the chef - all the food was excellent and we looked forward to every meal. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

    « Coach Trip »

Just back from a "Gibbons Coaches" trip and all I can say is "wow!" Right from the pick-up our holiday has been a blast. Our luxury coach got us off to a good start with Gordon our driver being a superb entertainer as well as driver :) When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by Paul who welcomed us with a smile and made us feel right at home. Our room was compact but really comfy. Fabulous shower/bathroom and towels! Clean crispy bed linen and plenty of refreshments on offer. The first evening meal with venison went down a treat as did the menu rest of week with meat, fish, pasta and vegetarian options. The staff were always obliging and smiling and happy whenever approached especially Sonia, Anna, Yanis and of course Paul they never failed to smile. The beer was lovely and prices good too. Breakfast at 8-9:30 served promptly and delicious. Haggis served as a treat Thursday evening was unexpected and rather tasty. While the entertainment wasn't for all pleasant evenings were had too. Dunoon was so picturesque and the hotel looks the part from outside and fits the bill inside. Having fallen in love with Dunoon and Scotland our return trip will be planned soon.

    « Best room again! »

The Argyll hotel is a nicely old fashioned hotel in Dunoon. The bar is good, the evening meals was great, and the room, well, they gave us the Tower room, 9 windows with a panoramic view of the Bay! Not quite what i expected, and the spectacular thunderstorm on our first night was just amazing providing you like thunderstorms, that is). Friendly staff, parking nearby, so we will be back, perhaps with better weather

    « View was amazing!!! »

Just returned from Argyll hotel for a short break...lovely location, decent room with an amazing view of the harbour. Staff ok...breakfast ok...it just looks a little tired in places...this place has so much history and looks so beautiful externally...just needs some love and cash to boost it back up to its former glory!!! Didnt eat here apart from breakfast which was not bad..porridge was excellent tho!!!! Wanted to stay another night but this hotel was full...so had to move on and we missed our view room...so we would return.

« Just because you have booked doesn't mean you will stay! »

We were a party of five with two relatives from Southern Europe. We wanted to accommodate our guests in a top hotel. After booking several months in advance I was rang by the hotel and told we had been accommodated elsewhere. No explanation or even an apology. This was less than two weeks before we were due to stay. Very disappointed. I presume they are operating the old trick of over booking and then relying on cancellations, keeping themselves fully booked. You have been warned!

    « Exceptional .. again ... »

My third stay at this hotel, each stay has been excellent , great food & service, & it was nice that a member of staff recognised me from a previous stay. Wont hesitate to go back , & such a lovely room .. 129 .. just ideal for me. Think I may ask for this room the next time I stay ..

« THE BEST MURDER MYSTERY YET »

ALLO ALLO everyone. Went with six friends to the Argyle Hotel for our third murder mystery and it just gets better and better. The receptionist Pauline was fantastic and made us feel very welcome as she sorted out a small problem with our booking. When we got to our room we found a bottle of wine on the table with two glasses FANTASTIC. I cannot thank the Manager Ian enough for looking after us during our stay. At night the staff work hard to ensure your stay is enjoyable. Janis (Ian),Michael and a young lady whom I did not catch her name were fantastic very professional but you could have a good laugh with them. Will definitely be back. Finally a big thanks to the actors as usual SUPERB. The Walking Theatre Company are the best group of actors I have seen at any murder mystery.. Will see you all again soon.

    « Allo Allo »

Another great weekend at the Argyll Hotel. This is the third murder mystery weekend we have been to and the best in my opinion. The hotel is up for sale , hope the new owners continue to have the Murder Mystery Weekends. We had a room front facing and we were kept awake after pub closing time by the crowds at the kebab shop across the road. We did not complain as this was not the hotels fault but when discussing with the manager he said he would have moved us to a different room if we had said after the first night. Didn't ruin the weekend but will ask for a different room next time

« Great overnight with friends »

We had a great time from start to finish at The Argyll Hotel. The staff were amazing, hard working and very friendly. Rooms clean, comfy beds and fluffy towels. One room a had a wee problem with the toilet but was fixed immediately. Food was good too with a hearty breakfast. We will definitely be back!

    « Allo allo murder/mystery weekend »

Lovely hotel with friendly helpful staff. We went for my sisters 50th birthday to our first murder/mystery experience. It was fabulous from start to finish.Well organised car ferry crossing to Dunoon then a short drive to the Argyll hotel.Great welcome, rooms clean and comfortable, food lovely and the theatre group who put on the "Allo allo" themed event were excellent, involving us all to take part and encourage each other. What a laugh, the occasional mistake in dialogue and subsequent ad lib made it funnier!Nearly everyone dressed up,some (like our group of 10)just basic, but some more elaborate - anything goes.Would definitely recommend these weekends, Dunoon lovely and cant wait to go back next year."The Tommies"

« Great location, good food, limited bar selection »

This hotel is old-style but well kept. It is in a great location in a town where the local council take pride in its appearance. Unfortunately the town itself is run-down with several restaurants closed in July. Fortunately the hotel restaurant is very good though the bar was disappointing with no English beer at all, one Irish and two draught scottish beers served with mixed gas to which I am allergic, a contrast to my next night's stay in Uig where three local real ales were on offer. My room was small but comfortable but the bathroom so small I could not sit straight on the WC (I am not tall) but for the price I paid it was good value. There was a problem with the booking as I had booked through Tripadvisor and my confirmation indicated that payment was taken at the time of booking. The hotel had not received any payment so I had to pay again, or so i thought until I got home to check my bank statements. The hotel were not able to resolve the issue at the time. If checking out early you will not find anyone at reception till 8am.

    « Stunning views »

Asked for a room on the bay side but was told the view wasn't good in our room but all the others were taken, got to the room and..wow, the views were stunning across the bay, you can lay in bed and watch the activity on the bay. The room was spotless and very comfortable, the hotel was fully booked so we ate in the attached Rio restaurant and had tapas, there is also Italian served. The breakfast was also very good and included. The Manager was very much front of house and very helpful, I didn't want to leave the room or the hotel. Excellent.

Another excellent stay at the Argyll lovely room with a sea view staff friendly and helpful. Ate in the Italian restaurant service unusually slow, either needed more waiting staff , more kitchen staff or both, but food as always excellent. weather poor on last day so we left early as we were at the end of our holiday.

    « Best hen/murder mystery weekend ever. »

A bunch of us went to a murder mystery weekend as a hen party and we had an absolute hoot. The staff in the hotel were very friendly and personable. The manager (Ian, I think) was visible the whole time and made a point of checking everything was running smoothly, and the very nice receptionist really knows her stuff. The rooms were clean and welcoming. I shared the tower suite which has a four poster bed with the hen and it had amazing views of the water. The food included as part of the murder mystery and the cooked breakfasts were not posh but well tasty, and I love that they kept bringing us an endless supply of toast. The murder mystery company were extremely entertaining and created a great atmosphere among all the guests in the hotel. We had beautiful weather to do the murder mystery trail around the town - it took a few hours but we could do it at our own pace and stopped for lunch in a nice beer garden. It turns out Dunoon is really pretty and has loads of history so this was the perfect way to see it. People (tourists/guests/staff) kept going out of their way to wish our hen well. The whole weekend was amazing value for money. The Argyll Hotel is not the Ritz but I cannot fault it in any way, their hospitality was exceptional. Thank you so much everyone!

« Amazing weekend for the murder mystery »

We stayed at the Argyll for a murder mystery weekend. There was no double rooms left so we splashed out for the 4 poster room and ended up in the "Tower Room". An amazing room with views from three walls (4th wall being the entrance). The only downside was none of the rooms in the bedroom opened and Dunoon was experiencing a rare heatwave.Bathroom window and the fan helped though. As it was murder mystery weekend we had a 3 course meal on Friday and 5 course meal on Saturday. You get to choose from a menu so everything was cooked to order and was soooooooooooooo good and filling (none of this fancy small portion rubbish). We also got breakfast included and it too had a varied menu and was very filling. The only thing you need to pay for in the weekend is lunch on the Saturday and your drinks. The murder mystery itself was very entertaining and the actors who did got a barrel of laughs and kept us entertained. I wont spoil with details! After the Friday night we had a singer and guitarist after dinner for entertainment who were very good and on the Saturday we had a disco - also very good. The hotel is ideally situated that you can take a train to Gourock and get a ferry from the train station to Dunoon Peir which is only a couple of 100 meters from the hotel. This allows you to enjoy a drink without worrying about driving the next day. Its also next to the main street, the castle and the gardens. The staff were friendly and helpful. The WIFI was strong in every part of the hotel. Would def come back - though I would avoid the 4 poster room and settle for a normal double.

    « Wedding weekend »

We were over for a friends wedding stayed for 2 nights. Staff were great. Had dinner on the first night it was lovely. Breakfast was ok not much selection for vegetarians no veg sausage or mushrooms potato scone etc. Returned home after wedding to find ourselves looked out our room the key wasn't working but was sorted in minutes with the night shift staff. Would stay again rooms were clean and spacious. Also asked for late checkouts for our party and the hotel had no problem with this which helped after our late night.

« The best hotel in the area but that doesn't say much ... »

The best hotel in the area but that doesn't say much. Dunoon has to offer basic B+Bs and the occasional hotel making this hotel the best in the area. We came to Dunoon as my partner had a training course in the area and i came to enjoy the beauty, peace + quiet that Dunoon had to offer. However as for having a nice lie in in the mornings was not possible. We stayed in room 104 - which was one of the nicer rooms as we decided to upgrade, and this room was right next to the cleaning cupboard which house keeping decided to use from 7am up until 12 noon (i know thats their job) but having a lot of banging for all that time wasnt pleasant and put a cloud over the lovely room due to its poor location in the hotel. The bar area is very nice and clean with an average selection of drinks to choose from. The bar menu had a wide selection to choose from. The Rio (the Italian restaurant) situated in the hotel was lovely. Great food and drink however service is very slow and it wasn't even busy when we ate there. This is probably one of the best restaurants in Dunoon so you kinda have to accept the slow service. It was sometime difficult to communicate to the restaurant staff. i don't know if it was my English accent or that English wasn't their first language. Another positive to the hotel is the free on street parking. I will be staying there again because like i said, its the best place in the area.

« good last minute deal »

Good first impression from concierge on phone and in person. Quiet and spacious room suited us and our infant son down to the ground. Good warm bath with ample toiletries and great selection of tea and milk much appreciated. Would have killed for some Nescafe sachets and a few biscuits. As well as the excellent overall value, its central location and free parking were added bonuses. Per my other review, dinner needs to improve to the service and food standards offered at breakfast. If I return on DBB, I would prefer an inclusive set pizza/pasta option over the existing set bar menu offered.

    « Fantastic stay »

Had a great weekend! There was a mix up with bookings but the staff and temporary manager dealt with it in a professional manner, could not have asked for better service. Dinner was included in the deal and we ate in the Rio restaurant both nights, the food was amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be back soon.

    3
    « Looks the best »

We did not stay here but did go in for an evening meal, we can only compare this hotel to ours and in general it seemed better in many ways, it is very central to Dunoon and just off the sea front. There appeared to be some new staff training in process although it was live interaction with us. The hotel seemed popular and will be a strong contender if we visit Dunoon again in the future.

    4
« Even better this time »

We last visited the Argyll a few years ago and were not disappointed this time round, the hotel has maintained its great standards and staff welcoming and friendly. We booked a sea facing room but were not happy with the room allocated as it looked on to a roof and the tiniest view of the sea. Went to reception and the receptionist, without question allocated us another room which had spectacular views, very comfortable indeed. Really good breakfast and again staff very friendly. Excellent wi-fi throughout the hotel. Was initially a bit wary of the spotlights outside but needn't have been, curtains provided total blackout. will definitely stay at the Argyll on our next trip to Dunoon

    « Murder Mystery Weekend »

Arrived on Friday 13 May for Murder Mystery weekend. There was a large group of us. Bit of a mix up with rooms but when we did get access it was small but fine. Tea making facilities which is a bonus and internet worked great. Had lunch there on day two service was patchy and slow but we were in no rush anyway. Thought the two night deal was good value with good choice of menu on both nights. Weather was great which was a bonus as we were running round for couple of hours on day two solving clues. Certainly would return but would request a quieter room on other side of hotel. Breakfast was good also.

« Good base for touring stunning countryside. »

Good welcome and friendly, helpful staff. A little disappointed with the room as it was in the basement with only a backyard view. But it was spacious with good bathroom facilities so we were fine and others in our party were complimentary about their rooms. It was obviously a family room which was fortunate as one of the mattresses was like a hammock, and as there were only two of us we could choose which mattress to sleep on. It was reported so hopefully has been sorted. The food was excellent for breakfasts, starters and mains BUT I am dairy free and the chef had no imagination as far as desserts were concerned. There was not even fresh fruit which is not on for a hotel. One half of a tinned pear when others are eating gorgeous cheesecakes, profiteroles etc. Not on!!!! Even with these niggles we had a really good stay and enjoyed the entertainment. Would go back as long as I could have a chat with the chef ??

    « Great Weekend »

We spent the weekend with family for my husbands birthday. We arrived by ferry from Gourock and it is only a 3 minute stroll to the hotel, an excellent location. We were met by friendly staff and were pleasantly surprised to see our rooms as they were very comfortable with lovely sea views. The rooms were spotless with tea and coffee facilities and the bathrooms very well equipped, more than adequate for our stay. The meals on both nights were lovely with a good choice and the staff serving us were very friendly and helpful. We are already planning our next trip for another family celebration. We thoroughly recommend it, great value for money.

« GREAT SERVICE AND VALUE »

Just returned from another terrific weekend at the Argyll hotel Dunoon this place gets better on every visit, service food and accommodation of the highest order at a very reasonable price. It has a really good bar area with a small veranda with a great sea view that is perfect for a nightcap. Would recommend Dev his team and hotel for anyone thinking of the Argyle area for a holiday or short break.

    « Excellent! »

Stayed here with family in April, rooms are very clean and comfortable, food in the Rio Restaurant was excellent and the staff are very friendly. A lot of hotels could learn from the Argyll on how to give great customer service. We have already booked again to stay here when we attempt the Dunoon half marathon!

    « Great Hotel & Location »

My wife and I recently visited the Argyle Hotel in Dunoon. Once again we were met with very friendly staff and because we were far too early to check in, there wasn't a problem storing our bags until later. We were booked for 2 nights DBB and we were given the same room we have had on previous occasions, which was great, and the manager (Dave) remembered that we really liked this room. We ate in the hotel dining room on our first night, and I must say the food was excellent and plentiful, in fact my wife couldn't have the sweet she was looking forward too, full up. The breakfast had a good range of cold and hot choices and again well cooked and plentiful, with as much tea, coffee and toast as you required, we had the full Scottish. On the second night we chose to eat in the other hotel restaurant, Rio, which is an Italian restaurant and the food again was excellent and plentiful. The staff here were also friendly and helpful especially if you were unsure about the menu. My wife even had the sweet she wanted the previous night even although it wasn't on the menu, Dave sorted this for her, like I said, nothing was a problem in this hotel. I would definitely recommend this hotel, and we will be back again.

« If you go to Dunoon a stay here is a must! »

Just back from a fantastic stay at the Argyll Hotel. A group of us attended one of their "themed weekends" (this is our third one now) and they really are the best value best kept secret in Scotland! Brilliant staff that can't do enough for you with nothing being too much trouble for them. Highly recommended both the hotel and the weekends for something different to do!! We'll be back again soon!! ????

« A very nice stay at a very nice hotel »

The hotel is in an excellent location with wonderful views. Upon arrival the excellent receptionist provided us with a room upgrade, as the hotel was quiet. The room was beautiful, being decorated & furnished to a high standard. There was a slight hiccup on our first evening with the bar and dinner service. However the Hotel Manager responded to our comments in a very professional and considerate manner and ensured that the rest of our 4 night stay was wonderful, especially the evening of our Wedding Anniversary. I can honestly say that the gentleman in question was on of the best Hotel Managers I have come across and is a credit to the hotel. We mainly ate in the hotels Rio Italian & Tapas Restaurant. The atmosphere, food and service was excellent. The bar/lounge was very comfortable with lovely sea views. The food at breakfast was also very good. The only comment being that the tables & chairs looked a bit outdated in comparison to the other public areas. There was a significant contingent of European employees amongst the staff, which on the odd occasion resulted in some minor misunderstandings. It was also complicated by the fact that a couple of staff had only started in the week we visited. However ALL of the staff proved to be very friendly, helpful and dedicated to their roles. Overall we were generally impressed with the standards across all aspects of the hotel and we would certainly stay here again. Consequently we would have no hesitation in recommending this establishment.

    « bit drab »

we stayed here for 1 night , very boring , could do with a makeover, empty toilet roll lying under sink, i noticed it as soon as we got there , but the cleaner must have missed it, girl on reception desk was in too much of a hurry to finish her shift, she rushed through our check in, food reasonably priced , but cannot comment as we did not try it due to other bad reviews , and was not going to spoil my wife's birthday

« Excellent first class service from staff and management »

I booked a 3 night stay for my friend and I through a 3rd party. The deal was £79 per person for 3 nights bed and breakfast with dinner on 2 nights. Was amazing value. The room, as with all these deals, wasn't one with a sea view but I had the opportunity to upgrade if I wanted to. I chose to stay where we were because it was a quiet room and we weren't planning on staying in it apart from to sleep in. It was exceptionally clean on arrival and cleaned each day. Very spacious and very comfortable and warm. Shower was easy to operate. Staff were very friendly and exceptionally attentive - nothing was a bother to them. Breakfast was more or less as much as you could eat??. Dinner was lovely and again great value for money. This hotel is right in the centre of Dunoon, near the pier and bus terminal, and right on the doorstep of all the shops. Thoroughly recommend a value for money stay.

« Comfortable well situated hotel »

Really comfortable hotel, given an upgraded room after a booking glitch at a sister hotel in the town. Large well appointed room with a super king size bed, 2 armchairs for relaxing, plenty of hanging and storage space and a wall mounted TV. Large bathroom with big bath and modern powerful shower. Plenty of toiletries provided. Good breakfast included in the price with plenty of choice. Staff all very pleasant and especially helpful on check in and check out with good tips on booking in future. Only downside was couldn't get a table for an evening meal in the Rio restaurant as it was fully booked, so book your table in plenty of time. Will certainly visit again

« Murder Mystery weekend Get Together »

Murder Mystery weekend Get Together Having been here before and having had a great weekend for a murder mystery, our ladies group, Dumfries Get Together, decided to have another weekend at the Argyll. Some of our ladies had never experienced the fantastic walking theatre company who put on an amazing show yet again! The Walking theatre group were great and had everyone participating which resulted in us meeting a lovely bunch of people and danced the night away with the after dinner entertainment. Everything was 1st class from start to finish. very friendly and helpful staff. The food was enjoyable on both nights we couldn't fault any of it. This must be one of the most reasonably priced functions that you could go to, highly entertaining with both nights rounded off with entertainment. The first night had the dance floor packed but I am sorry to say the disco was a total flop as was the case the last time we visited. No one wanted to sit in the main room let alone dance with the laser lights everywhere. This didn't spoil our night as we sat in the bar area and some guests headed uptown away from the annoying lights from the disco. Murder Mystery weekend at the Argyll Hotel was absolutely brilliant! Dumfries Get Together, Will definitely be returning for another weekend here. We all had a total laugh from the outset. See you next year!

« Full of false promises »

After our first disappointing weekend at this hotel the manager went out of his way to promise that our stay was totally out of character for this hotel, basically we were the last guest to check-in that evening for two nights for a tribute weekend. Our room was in the basement and the manager was aware that the beds were uncomfortable he did state that he would upgrade us the following day, the next day did come but unfortunately we were inform that the upgrade was not possible. The manager assured us we would be provided with a free upgrade to one of their premier rooms and to call in advance our next visit, giving the hotel the benefit of doubt and believing the managers offer we booked another weekend for a member of family but to our horror found they were treated exactly the same as my first visit this was after calling the hotel and assured they did have an upgrade and they were the first guests to arrive that day? One minor point at breakfast you might notice all the seats with a view are reserved from personal experience I have only seen one table used and after asking the occupants how their reservation process works they had not booked the table ? We will never use this hotel again

We stayed as a group for one of their Murder Mystery weekends and I have to say it was excellent. A number of our party had the same issue.

    « Murder Mystery Weekend »

I travelled to Dunoon with a group of females especially for a Murder Mystery Weekend. I was extremely pleased with the hotel, lovely room, good food, it couldn't be faulted and especially for the price I paid. I enjoyed the Treasure Trail on the Saturday morning but did feel the actors were long winded. I have to say that this view was not shared by my friends. It wasn't my scene. On the Friday evening I loved dancing to the small band but felt let down on the Saturday as there was only a DJ and this didn't have the same appeal. Overall a very good weekend and I would be happy to go back.

Enjoyed the stay here, excellent value, food really good, staff really good and it was nice and warm. This trip was a Christmas present for this date, I must say Dunoon did not have much going on at all, would do the Best Western deal again though, maybe try Dunoon in the high season but would not rush back, we prefer somewhere with more to do, but can't fault the hotel.

This hotel stay was better all found from the last place I visited, room was perfect shower was nice and spacious and very powerful, food was amazing too (indian side, never had time for Italian side) only 1 mark off for wifi, ok for emails but don't even try to stream anything, I tried with both Netflix and BT sports, shame really because everything else was perfect

Booked into the hotel and were given an upgrade as part of our deal. The room was lovely 4 poster bed huge tv and double aspect so we could see most of the coast. The staff in the hotel were extremely helpful. there are two restaurants in hotel so we decided to visit both while there. The main one serves traditional food and also curries (the chef is Indian) are wonderful. The Italian Spanish restaurant serves pizza, pasta and tapas. We couldn't fault the food or accommodation. The area is spectacular plenty to see and the scenery is brilliant. Would recommend to everyone.

« Nice hotel in a great location »

I stayed here for one night last night on a deal booked through My Hotel Break. As I booked extremely late I could not get the room (sea view) requested but the hotel did call me up to offer me alternative dates if this was going to be an issue for me. Great service before I even arrived. The hotel is excellently placed for all the nearby pubs and restaurants and has car parking right across the road. I was able to check into my room early and the lady at reception explained everything about the hotel and asked if we required help with our bags. Our room on the top floor was pleasantly furnished and extremely comfortable. The Bathroom was also very modern with an excellent shower. We had booked on a DB&B basis and had a choice of the traditional restaurant or the italian/tapas restaurant. We opted for the traditional on the basis that there was an Indian chef on duty and his curries came highly recommended. We were not disappointed with our Chicken Bhoona main course which was truly outstanding. After a night out in a few local pubs we enjoyed an extremely good sleep in a very comfortable bed. Breakfast in the morning consisted of a choice of cereals with hot food made to offer from the buffet. Tea/coffee and toast were also served to your table. The cooked breakfast was excellent and just what is required to set you for the day. Previous reviews mention the hotel being under new ownership and see this as a negative. I seen the opposite side of this. The Manager Dev seemed to be on duty 24/7 and was busy ensuring that all guests were being well looked after. All staff I encountered during my stay were extremely pleasant and always smiling. This was my first trip to Dunoon and when I return I will be looking to stay at the Argyll hotel again. Overall fantastic value for money.

    « Lovely »

Stayed here for 1 night on a dinner bed and breakfast deal. Room was good, clean and comfortable bed. Heating worked well in the room. We were directly above the tapas restaurant which was a Wee bit noisy at about midnight, but to be expected on a Saturday night. The dinner was lovely adequate choices, no faults. Again breakfast was nice as well. We had a lovely stay and would definitely come back, staff made everyone feel welcome.

Nice hotel and lovely view we had a sea view and this was great waking up each morning to looking out, food was nice and breakfast was also good as they made what I asked for as I don't like full breakfast and only certain things very accommadating! Staff were ok felt the reception staff where a bit dull with us but bar staff where great! Only downfall was the lift takes ages and also we never had a bath in our room and our friends did in the room next door which we felt we should have had the option but overall was a good stay!

« Scottish Hotel with Aunt »

We stayed here at this lovely Scottish Hotel with our Aunt, Auntie Marjorie has always loved Scotland, so we all went across to Dunoon for a short break. Had a lovely half board break, had a glitch at the booking stage as Aunties room was not ready? and I had thought I had sorted all of this out before we departed for Scotland, as I always like to contact a hotel to confirm my booking. However the Hotel manager helped to sort everything out and we all enjoyed our stay, especially Aunty. Breakfast very good and waiter service, evening meal was pleasant, my venison was poor though. Sadly Auntie died in November 2015, but at least she had visited her lovely Scotland one last time.

« Lovely wee night away »

Staff incredibly friendly and welcoming, asked about our journey and the local area we are from which was a nice touch. Lamont Room with 4 poster was comfy and a great size. Shower hot and powerful. Lovely sea views out the windows and looking over the promenade but no noise from outside at all. We had dinner in the Rio restaurant. Staff were lovely again and a MASSIVE selection of food on offer. Had breakfast the next morning in the hotel. Plenty of cooked choices, the continental breakfast looked fine, no pastries etc but we were having full cooked breakfast so it made no difference to us. The cooked breakfast was great. Staff really attentive. Lovely night away, would definitely recommend for a stay in Dunoon

« Don't go here, change of management from local to foreign. »

Horrible, old, tired, poor hotel. We choose this due to a special offer with classic Britain (£40 b&b) & the high rating TA , what a mistake. This is not a 3 star hotel more like a 1, 2 at a push. I found out later that this hotel has changed hands & is now managed by a Indian/Pakistani family. First impression, no car park, (use Public at sea front), poor looking front doors, reception, old dirty/ broken floor tiles, aprox 5ft high reception counter. The polish receptionist allocated us room 133, which turned out to be in the bowels of the hotel, behind the public bar gents toilets, and not 133 but 33. The room can only be described as poor, old fashion, 3 beds & a black dirty looking PVC fold down couch, stained carpets & a strange smell, the outlook was from ground level non secure old sash wIndows, onto a dull slabbed back court of a house next door. I requested a room change, but the manager was a waste of space, not customer focused, poor English, unfriendly & just totally uninterested. His mumbled response, turned out to be "there were no rooms available" January hmmm! It was basically take it or leave it, no apologise, no eye contact. Due to our late arrival, we decided to stay as at least the bed sheets seemed clean & the bathroom was ok. It gets worse, our room was below a function room, which had a event on with a band, the whole room vibrated with the noise, I really struggled to sleep (scratching all the time), the fire alarm goes off 6.10 am for some time, my husband opened the door only to have what seemed like a homeless person go by, I decided to take as much as I could with me on the way out ( which is also a story) the alarm had been going for at least 20 mins and the only people trying to get out were from the 2 rooms on our floor (homeless couple & us) strange as the hotel was suppose to be full. Eventually some young Scottish guy (the only English 1st language staff) advised us it was a false alarm to go back to bed, only for the alarm to go on & off again for 20 mins an hour later. The breakfast was ok, but was not the saviour for the TA marking. To be honest I only wanted out of the place, all I had was toast & tea, my husband ate the breakfast. I hadn't even unpacked. We woke at 9.30, had breakfast & were waiting on the ferry at 10.20. Never again, don't waste your money or time going here.

    « Disappointed by Room 34!!! »

Booked a room in this hotel as my child was attending a sporting event close by. We booked a family room through Best Western's website. When we checked in we were allocated Room 34. The gentleman at reception was welcoming and told us about where we could eat, and that there was a Michael Buble tribute band playing in the hotel that evening, what he didn't tell us was that they were playing in the room directly above our bedroom. Room 34 is on street level and is down stairs from the hotel reception. It is accessed by a very cold corridor. Room 34 is tired!!! The carpet is stained, the curtains and blinds are dated and some of the furniture should have been thrown out some time ago. There is a panel heater in the room which only has one leg, but the hotel had kindly left a block of plastic as a replacement for the missing leg. There are some positives though, the beds and the bathroom were clean. We had a drink in the bar, we were served by the gentleman who had welcomed us at reception he was very pleasant. We had a lovely meal in the hotel's Rio restaurant, however returning to our room at approx 10 o'clock, ready for a good nights sleep, we were met by the sound of "Michael Buble" thumping out from the room above. When we realised that this may continue for some time, we visited reception and voiced our concerns. The gentleman on reception (the same one that had welcomed us and served our drinks) advised that everyone had booked in and there were no other rooms available. He said he would ask for the music to be turned down, but there was no obvious reduction in the volume being heard in Room 34. There was a short break from the music around 10:45, however it was soon to return. Once we eventually managed to get to sleep we all had a good sleep. The breakfast the next morning was pretty average but we had no specfic complaints.

    « Short break »

Stayed for one night to visit relatives. Lovely clean room with sea view. Restaurant meal was great value and good breakfast. Staff were helpful. Hotel is close to all amenities. Only thing to let us down was the weather, but the views are great.

« Great weekend break in Dunoon »

Great hotel! From check in to check out all of the staff pull out all the stops to ensure that guests have a pleasant and relaxing stay. We have stayed on two occasions for weekend breaks so far, and will certainly go back as often as we can manage in the future. Breakfast was excellent and the meals we ordered from the restaurant were reasonably priced and enjoyable The adjoining Italian restaurant that is run by the hotel served excellent cuisine. Rooms were cleaned daily and beds were comfortable. Internet was fast and flat screen TV's supplied freeview channels for entertainment.

    3
    « Just average »

Booked this after visiting another Best Western but this was a disappointment. There was a traditional Scottish breakfast, same as English, but no continental apart from fruit juice. no crossiants, no bread, no cheese, no cold meat.

    « Good location »

I stayed here for 1 night whilst working away and the location is good. The restaurant is pleasant and the food is nice enough and reasonably priced. The walls are a little thin so corridor noise can cause a little bit of disturbance. Helpful staff and a good location along with the low price mean this is a worthwhile place to stay when visiting Dunoon and the views over the seafront from the bar are excellent.

« Murder mystery fun in elegant hotel! »

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel over the weekend and the murder mystery weekend was wonderful! Our dinners were lovely and the staff were friendly and accomodating. Was great to see the manager having such a hands on approach with the hotel guests and would reccomend booking the Tower Room at the very top for some fantastic views of the sea!

    « Murder Mystery Weekend »

Murder Mystery weekend at the Argyll Hotel was absolutely brilliant and would thoroughly recommend it. Helpful friendly staff, lovely evening meal each night and I was surprised to see a choice of menu as I had assumed it would be a set menu. Walking theatre group were great and had everyone participating which resulted in us meeting a lovely bunch of people and danced the night away with the after dinner entertainment. Will definitely be returning for another weekend here.

    « Murder mystery »

Having been here before for a murder mystery weekend we decided to have a family get together here, two of them never experiencing the fantastic walking theatre company who put on an amazing show, both will be back for more after this great weekend. Everything was 1st class from start to finish, great manager (Basil) as I was calling him; was on hand at all times running the show with very friendly and helpful staff. The food was exceptional on both nights we couldn't fault any of it. This must be one of the most reasonably priced functions that you could go to, highly entertaining with both nights rounded off with live entertainment. We would highly recommend a visit to this hotel for the murder mystery nights, we will be back.

I can`t praise the management and all the staff for all that they do for you nothing is a chore to them! and as for the Walking theatre company they were a blast!! this Hotel is not the Ritz but value for money it is hard to beat! there is some negatives from other guests in the past but as I say its not the Ritz! I am still holding my sides after all the laughter over the weekend thanks guys we will see you all soon.

Thank you Argyll Hotel we will definitely be back ASAP thank you .

    « Very Poor. »

A group of three stayed for 3 nights. Poor service (reception and in the restaurant),dreadful food and generally run down.Breakfast service was disorganised and slow. No staff available for a checkout at 8 am despite a promise they would be prompt. The delay led to missed ferry.

    « Excellent visit - no complaints »

From the General Manager right down to the reception and waiting staff everyone were very helpful and provided a very high level of customer service always smiling throughout, and I work in a hotel environment. I was there for my girlfriend's birthday and the General Manager went out of his way to make sure the table in the attached restaurant was booked, as well as speaking to the staff about the surprise birthday cake I ordered- ensuring everything went according to plan. The rooms were also lovely, as if they have recently been refurbished. Will be returning here again next time I stay in Dunoon.

    « Weekend trip »

Had a lovely stay at the Argyll hotel. Very welcoming staff and attentive manager Dev. Room lovely and clean and had all requirements ie hairdryer, tea/coffee and toiletries etc. Couldn't work the shower properly so had rather lukewarm showers. Food in both Rio restaurant and main bar was delicious and lovely breakfast too. Overall lovely stay and would recommend it wholeheartedly. Great service by all the friendly staff. Good location and would definitely return

    « Christmas Break »

We stayed here for the Christmas arrangement break 24-27 December which was very reasonably priced (DBB). It has a great location with free parking nearby. It really is a lovely hotel, staff are very friendly and helpful especially Dev the general manager who really went out of his way to please us. Food was absolutely amazing in both the hotel restaurant (traditional cuisine) and the adjoining RIO Restaurant (Italian/Spanish cuisine) and generous portions too in both. Our room (116) was a nice size, clean and comfortable with cable tv, hairdryer and cofee/tea available. Our double bed was really comfortable. En suite bathroom was very clean with a powerful shower which was amazing (no bath). All in all had a very pleasant stay and look forward to returning again in March. Would highly recommend this hotel for business or pleasure.

nice clean hotel lovely food, staff nice helpful, enjoyed the shops in dunoon ferry trip over the water, shame that you cant get a nights sleep for the pub over the road and students coming out of partys and clubs, should be better restricions in place for this,be quieter on week nights though,so in all not a bad stay, beds not to comfy to sleep in either when you can, would not recommend if you are on a working holiday as you wont get any sleep and not a lot of sympathy from the staff, stay in a quieter hotel in dunoon,

A 2 day Dinner, Bed and Breakfast break in the beautiful town of Dunoon. Our stay was made by the wonderful attentive staff and the quality of the meals was outstanding. Situated on the sea front and so close to the Pubs/shops literally outside the front door. Would definately come again.

« Welcoming and good value »

We have just bought property in Dunoon and stayed here whilst we waited to exchanged and collect the keys. The rooms are very large, clean and comfortable and we were lucky enough to get a room with a sea view. It was a bit busy in the restaurant with an event so we went out into the high street for Dinner, there are plenty of restaurants nearby. We did have the traditional Scottish breakfast which was freshly cooked to order. We will definitely book again for visiting family.

« Lovely view, great food and the best sleep ever »

We arrived in a monsoon and our welcome could not have been warmer. Paul the receptionist seemed genuinely happy to see us, check in was easy and quick and he even carried our luggage to our room. We ate in the lounge area and the food and service were very good. It made a nice change to be able to eat good quality Indian food in a hotel and I would recommend the fish pakora and the chicken Karahi and the sticky toffee pudding was quite simply delicious. Our room had a queen size bed and a single with plenty of storage space and extra pillows and blankets should we have needed them which we didn't as the room was warm. The bathroom has been recently refurbished. The cooked breakfast was fab and a great start to the day. We will be back.

    « Murder Mystery Weekend »

We arrived at 1pm on Friday, too early to get in to our rooms but no problem, reception looked after our luggage. We went for a walk and a spot of lunch. On return to the Hotel we checked in to our room then went to the bar and had a few drinks. We attended the Friday evening function, great fun and excellent food. On the Saturday we were disappointed we could not do the treasure hunt as it was very wet. We relaxed reading the papers and chatting with friends. We had a lovely lunch in the Rio Restaurant which is also part of the Hotel. Saturday night, the main event! We had a great night being entertained by the Walk in Theatre group until 10.30 when we cleared out to the bar for 20 minutes to allow the staff to set the room up for dancing, we had a great night and again we were spoiled by the choice and quality of the food.

    « Vampires weekend »

Just back from our annual Dunoonies weekend at the Argyll hotel. What another wonderful stay we had. The staff could not have been any more accomodating. We arrived on Friday afternoon and were allocated our keys. We were in room 105 which was really big and very comfortable and clean. We had a shower room with a really powerful shower and plenty of hot water. The room overlooked the square and if the weather had been better then we would have had a great view of the water. Our entertainment by the walking theatre company was very good and as entertaining as it always is. Our food was of a very high standard on both nights and even snacks at the bar were very good. I would recommend these themed weekends as they are amazing value for money. Already booked for next year. Well done guys.

« Free Mouse in the room! »

We stayed in this hotel from 23-27 November as part of a bus tour. On our first night we had a visitor to the room, a MOUSE ran across our floor! It squeezed below the door and ran off! When we reported this to reception the next morning the receptionist said "We know about the mice!!!" Apparently there had been 3 other mice spotted by other guests. There was no apology for this and the staff were very rude to us not caring that this had caused us a sleepless night! This is disgraceful and not acceptable that pest control is not under control in this hotel!! We had no confidence that this hotel was hygienic at all! The food was school dinner like with tinned fruit being served during breakfast and at desert during dinner. The room was nice with a nice bathroom, its just a pity they can't control the pests that visit! The staff need training in customer service as we had no offer of even a free drink due to the mouse in the room! I would definitely NOT stay here again and would not recommend any of my friends to visit. I will be writing to the tour company to complain about this and advise them not to use this hotel in the future.

My wife and I spent a 2 night break on 13th. and 14th. December. What a delight, everyone so friendly and nothing too much trouble. Rooms clean and tidy, bed large and comfortable. Will certainly recommend to family and friends. Look forward to visiting again.

    « Busy »

An old building in need of modernisation. Have stayed on a few occasions and some rooms have been modernised but the last two, while being clean, were definitely in need of an update. Shower in one was too high off the floor and would be dangerous for elderly people. Squeaky floor boards would be a nuisance to the people below. Usually lots going on so can be quite noisy. On the plus side reception staff really courteous and helpful. Good breakfast with a large range of cereals, fruit, yoghurt and a varying selection of cooked food also. Waiting staff friendly, courteous and helpful

« Brightness on a dull Dunoon day »

We arrived in dull and dusky Dunoon for two nights at the Argyll hotel, the hotel is lit up like a welcome beacon on the outside and was matched by the welcome we received inside. We were welcomed at reception and had room and mealtimes explained in a clear and pleasant manner. We were delighted with our bedroom (106), a lovely corner room, bright and airy, spotless and with a view of the promenade and shore. My husband and I were on dinner, bed and breakfast, the food was of good quality, well cooked and beautifully presented, great value, efficient staff who worked well together. I would recommend the Argyll to anyone looking for a break by the sea. An added bonus was the bar prices !!!

    « Wedding »

I organised a University class reunion here in May and I was so delighted with the hotel we arranged our daughter's wedding at The Argyll Hotel in September. Again the entire staff were enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much bother for them. The wedding ceremony took place in an impressively set up dining room with red carpet added to the aisle. While photos were taken and drinks served in the bar area, the dining room was dressed beautifully for the reception dinner. Virtually all our guests stayed in the hotel and all reflected our appreciation of the service. Yet again, well done Dev and staff and many thanks for making all the organisation stress free.

Later in the bar area it was fine then the heating was switched off . In all very poor .

    « Beautiful Views »

I have just come back from a 5 day girlie holiday. It was a coach holiday with GB Tours. The room we had was on the 2nd floor with an ensuite bathroom (a disabled bathroom) and we had a great view of the River Clyde. You could even look at the view from the loo. The hotel is clean and bright with high ceilings and is right on the promanade. There is a regular bus service and a roro ferry just a few minutes drive, it does take foot passengers too but a few minutes up the coast is another foot passenger ferry, these ferries take you over to greenock where there is a train service. From the hotel to Glasgow takes about an hour by ferry and train. There is a tourist information office round the corner. The staff can tell you what ferry to get and what time trains to get, they are very helpful. The staff are friendly and polite. There is a small lift to the 3 floors but not to the basement rooms or conference room, but be careful if you like fish as there is a fishtank at the top of these steps. Children are welcome as there are family rooms available but no pets only guidedogs. There is a disabled access (to the side of the hotel) but it's not sign posted, it serves as a fire door therefore you cannot open it from the outside but there is a bell to ring and someone will open it for you. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms and the bedrooms have tea/coffee fascilities, the beds are made and the rooms are cleaned every day and tea/coffee are replenished daily too although if you run during the day you can ask at reception or give them a call. The food is delicious and the portions are just right. There is a seperate resturant/tapas bar. We had set menus but one evening there wasn't anything I liked on our menu but there wasn't a problem they offered me an alternative. We had a folder in our room with a pricelist inside, if these are true prices I hope you have a fat wallet/purse as they are expensive (this may be if you have room service). The alcohol is a bit on the high side (at the bar) £11 for a bottle of red and £10 for a bottle of white, which works out cheap if you are planning serveral drinks rather than buying a glass at a time, you can take your drinks to your room. The are some shops over the road and further into to the small town with a few cafes and bars. I would highly recommend this hotel and would love to go back again.

    « Refreshments »

To say this venue is terrible is an understatement. I have never experienced anything like it before. We were interested in using the connected restaurant but we were there at about eleven and when asked were informed the opening time was twelve ( noon). We decided we would have soft drinks and asked the waitress if this was possible instead of tea/coffee offered, while we waited and sat down asking the waitress if we could move some chairs as their were seven of us. We waited to be served the staff walked past us several times with no communication or acknowledgement we were there, things changed when locals arrived and were served immediately by this time we had waited 30mins to be served, we got her attention and ordered soft drinks, teas and coffees. We finished these and although we would have liked to have refills the empty glasses and cup were still there when we left over an hour later. To the manager of this venue if there is a camera then watch from between 10.30am and 12.00 noon on Saturday 10th October and you will see exactly what I mean. I would recommend that you avoid this venue at all costs. As it has been proved it is for locals only. I have never been had to mark a hotel so low before but after my visit I have no other choice.

Booked this hotel for a weekend break with friends. On arrival was very impressed with the hotel and was made very welcome. I would recommend this hotel to all my family and friends. There was a slight problem with our booking through an outside party. But the manager got it all sorted out for us. Manager and the staff were very friendly and have excellent customer service. Our room had a sea view and was very clean. You had two choices on where to eat for evening dinner in there Rio 's restaurant or the hotel. Food was good in both of them. I will definitely be back. Big thank you for making our weekend even more special.

This hotel is in the very heart of Dunoon so very accessible to everything local. I have only been here as a non resident, having a late night drink after dinner but from what I saw it looks very modern & comfortable

Stayed here over the September weekend. The evening meal was very school meals and the service very slow. We got hurried out of the room to allow the tribute act to perform but unfortunately it was also not a slick act so we only lasted half and hour. Our room was on the 3rd floor with a double bed jammed up against the wall. The room as very tired. The lift could be doing with an overhaul. The second night we decided to go too the Rio for our evening meal thinking it had to be better than the previous night unfortunately it was worst .The main course was tastelessl blane rice with a few mushrooms thrown in needless to say I left it.

« Argyll Hotel Murder Mystery Weekend excellent value for money and highly entertaining »

Very pleasant hotel and the food was excellent. We were there for a hen part and took part in the Pirate Murder Mystery weekend, which I would highly recommend at £99 pp for 2 nights, 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts! Weekend was full of fun and the surrounding area was lovely as well as the locals being very friendly and welcoming. Taking part in a treasure hunt as part of the murder mystery meant we were able to see more of Dunoon and it was beautiful. There was a slight miscommunication regarding the number of guests in our party and the room selections however the manager very quickly resolved the issue and was solely focussed on ensuring we left happy after a fantastic weekend.

just had a lovely two night stay at the Argyll Hotel. was allocated room 118 which was perfect for us ( has a sea view and street view). Very comfortable and lovely modern bathroom with bath and shower. Dev and his staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent with a varied menu. Only negative in dining room was that service was slow and we thought that this was due to the way the orders were taken. The entertainment on Friday night was excellent with everyone joining in and dancing. The Divalicious on the Saturday we felt fell a bit flat due to the artiste taking too long too change between the tribute singers. Not much in the way of dancing this time. All in all it was an enjoyable weekend and we would certainly think about a return visit.

Stayed here for two nights on 18/19 Sept 2015.I must admit I was very very impressed. The room was really first class with great views over the firth of Clyde.Although I prefer a bath the shower was really great and appeared to have been just installed Every thing in the hotel was clean and well decorated and a visit to the public Loos was a real surprise ,I have to say they were just about the best toilets I have seen in many, many hotels. Now the food ,again we had no complaints and the choice was varied, Indian ,Chinese more or less whatever you wanted oh! and there is also an Italian dining room if you choose Credit must be paid to the restaurant staff as nothing seemed to be too much for them. All and all a very very pleasant short stay and we will certainly be returning Oh! I should have added that the gentleman on reception,Dev I believe, couldn't have been more helpful allowing us to look at a choice of rooms before deciding Ian & Lil
