« Ideal for motorpoint arena »

Two couples visiting Cardiff to see a show at the Motorpoint Arena. The Clayton was just minutes walk away although Cardiff is a nightmare to park in. A stylishly furnished hotel the rooms were very nicely decorated. We had a late night snack in the 24 hour cafe after the show and the staff were very obliging. Perfect stay! Will definitely use again when visiting Cardiff which incidentally is fabulous for shopping !!

    « Unfortunately not impressed »

We visited Cardiff to attend the Wales v Argentina Rugby match. The hotel was centrally located and ideal for our stay. We booked an Executive Deluxe Room at a staggering £221.00 for the night... without breakfast. The room was well appointed but felt pokey. The window looked over an internal atrium which was not attractive and the view from the bed was of a wall and a drain pipe. The bed was 4'6". This cannot be described as Executive or Deluxe. The bathroom was very small, one of those where you have to siddle round the door to get to the toilet. The basin only the size of my (petite) hand. We had a couple of drinks and a pizza in the bar which was fine. I did complain to Best Western (this is one of their Premier Hotels) who passed on the complaint to the hotel direct. I received a polite corporate reply offering an upgrade when I visited again. This is unlikely due to the one off nature of the trip. Sadly also, because I booked through Booking.com (and paid in advance) I didn't even get my Best Western loyalty points. Very disappointing.

    « Good breakfastn »

Stayed for one night to see Paul Simon at Motorpoint. The room looked newly decorated, was very clean and was on a corner overlooking rail tracks which was good. The bathroom was adequate but felt a bit cramped. Very close to everything. Motorpoint is 5 minutes walk, shops less than that. Railway station on doorstep. There is a limited bar but the breakfast was very good for veggies - loads of choice. Very comfortable stay and we'll be booking again for Robbie next year!

    « Great experience »

This is the fourth visit in the last two years and was as good as the other three. The standard throughout was excellent and the food and staff were exemplary. We breakfasted with a disabled couple who had tried one of the other major hotel chains nearby but found the staff here the best in every way and were staying for the whole week .Hope to see you in 2017 and happy Christmas to you all

Lovely hotel. Arrived in the morning and the room was available (at no extra early check-in cost). Great location for shopping, restaurant and rugby! Staff very helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

« So much better than last time! »

We stayed at this hotel previously and were not overly impressed but i'm delighted to say that our visit this time was so much better. The staff as previously were excellent and thoroughly professional. The rooms this time were warm and the food was of far better quality. Special mention must be made of one lady who stood out during our stay - Gina Kiniane (Front office manager). There was a group of Irish school children staying in the hotel and in fairness they were well behaved. Gina handled them in a very warm and caring manner and ensured that they finished their meals in a reasonable time in order to create more space for other diners. A pity that the hotel does not give more prominence to the Welsh language and culture and this in the Welsh capital.

    « Lovely hotel »

Nicely updated hotel, fab location and great Brazilian restaurant downstairs. Breakfast wasn't very warm though! Parking quite far away but near to train station. Overlooked the train station so was some train noise.

    « Disappointing »

Had reasonably high expectations based on star rating. Check in was fairly smooth although when I asked to join their reward scheme there were no forms left. The room was not clean. A random bottle lid from previous guest was still on the floor, very visible cobwebs and a very noisy bathroom fan that someone had jammed toilet paper in to try and muffle the noise! As I'd arrived in Cardiff via plane I had no umbrella so asked reception, they had none to lend. Fine. But the response "put your hood up" was just annoying! Breakfast was good.

« Mrs P wants to go back »

Firstly can I say that Gina who is on reception was fantastic, she could not help enough, she was happy from the moment we arrived to the moment we left ( management she deserves a rise) The hotel is very central, the breakfast was great with black pudding on offer.we booked a package that included afternoon tea and a free cocktail, which was wonderful. we enjoyed it that much, we have booked again for December Mrs P was delighted .

Excellent hotel. First class restaurant. Fantastic breakfast. All staff from cleaners to managers really do their utmost to ensure guests are looked after at all times. Will be going back again early next year. A truly 5 star experience.

    « Amazing location »

We booked here as we were going to a concert in the Motorpoint arena. Location couldn't have been better. The airport bus picks up and drops off just across the road, it's near the main shopping areas and very close to the Motorpoint and Millennium stadium. We had an early start to catch our flight to Cardiff (up at 4.30am) so I had phoned the hotel a few days beforehand to see if there was any chance at all of a room being ready for us on arrival. Naturally they couldn't make any promises but we were delighted to be told when we arrived shortly after 10am that a room was ready!! We were so appreciative of this. Room was good, on 11th floor. Nearby trains didn't bother us at all. Breakfast was very good - best scrambled eggs ever in a hotel! A bit pricey given that it was rugby weekend and a concert on too but the location and staff were great.

« Cannot rate this hotel and it's staff highly enough »

We booked a night at the Clayton Hotel via Secret Escapes, which included afternoon tea and a cocktail. I truly cannot fault a single thing about the entire stay. The room was on the 10th floor and had an outstanding view across the bay. It was just about the right size and had tea and coffee, iron etc. The bed was super comfy and the shower powerful and hot. There was the tiniest bit of noise from the railway, but hey that's not really a surprise! The afternoon tea was great, a number of different sandwiches, cakes and scones and then the house cocktail to top it all off. Breakfast was a buffet and there was lots of choice including the usual cooked choices plus yoghurt and fruit for the healthy ones. The hotel is perfectly situated for rugby, or a concert or just a visit to take in the castle and to do some shopping. The staff really made it for us, everyone from the reception, the restaurant and the bar could not have been any nicer, and nothing was too much trouble. Parking was available just across the road in the NCP at £9. There is cheaper available but not as convenient. I'll be staying here every time I come to Cardiff.

    « . »

Stayed here for 3 nights and couldnt fault the hotel or staff at all, room was lovely and had a lovely view. Arrived at 10am and Catriona on front desk who was very helpful and nice took our bags into storage so we could go for some breakfast.

    « Overnight Stay »

Super hotel in a ultra convenient location. Stayed here for Rugby International weekend. Really convenient for Principality Stadium and hustle and bustle of Brewery Quarter. Really helpful and accommodating staff who allowed us to check into room a little early as 2.30 kick off and we had travelled from London on the day. Had booked breakfast which is a buffet with huge amount of options. Room was clean and comfortable. We were on the 9th floor. That I suspect is a better option. Cardiff and in particular on International weekend the town is buzzing and the bars and clubs stay open late if you get my drift.

    5
    « Great location »

We had a king room on the top floor, great views over the city. Room had everything you may need, iron, hairdryer, kettle and a coffee machine. We booked breakfast whilst there, £18 for 2 was a bargin for a fabulous breakfast.

    3
    « Smoked out »

We had been to see a Concert at the St David's Centre but unfortunately missed our last bus home so as we were in St Marys Street we decided to stay overnight. The Clayton Hotel was just at the bottom of the street so we thought we would see if they had a room available. The guy on Reception was brilliant. He was helpful and polite and found us a room with 3 beds. We decided to go to the bar for a drink before going to bed so by this time it must have been 12.30 ish. The room itself was adequate but the carpet seemed very worn but the worst part about the room was the smell of smoke. We really should have asked for a different room but by this time we were tired so we thought we would put up with it. However, we couldn't open any windows and the smoke smell was so bad it had impregnated the bedding so whilst you were lying in bed all you could smell and taste was stale cigarette smoke. As we had to leave early to get home for work etc. we didn't experience the breakfast but I did send an e mail complaining about the smell but sadly it was ignored so I thought I would just advise future guests about how bad our room was. I also filled in the questionnaire in the room so there is no excuse for poor guest relations. We paid £105 for the room without breakfast so it wasn't cheap.

« Lovely stay during a rugby weekend! »

Stayed here 4th - 6th November with friends on a weekend away for the rugby! Lovely hotel, clean & modern. Very comfortable. Reasonable price too (£400 for 3 people for 2 nights in a family room).. It is in a really good location, two minute walk away from all the busy nightlife & pubs

« Easily accessable good hotel in central Cardiff. »

My wife and I have just come back from Cardiff where we stayed at the Clayton. The cooked breakfast choices were excellent although the plates could have been warm. Dinner was good and the room large enough and very quiet although overlooking the railway. Being right by the station the town was so accessible. Rooms are air-conditioned with control in the room!

    « Short Graduation Break »

Very close to train station and few minutes away from centre. Staff can be friendlier and better communication was expected. Front desk forgot to confirm my payment for breakfast for 2 rooms, so every morning I was told that my room had no breakfast booked when it was actually already paid for. For the money paid I've expected better.

    5
« Well worth the visit »

The room was the perfect size and it was also very clean. We got room service and it came quickly after ordering and was very good quality (but quite pricey as expected). The staff were lovely and very helpful. We have already booked another visit to this hotel!

« Convenient, friendly and comfortable »

We had a lovely 3 night stay in this hotel in October. As said previously you're handy for the station, castle, art gallery, restaurants etc. The staff are very friendly, room is good - not huge but we were only using it as a base to explore Cardiff and surrounding areas. We found the bed comfortable and the cleaners were excellent. I also appreciated the ice-making machines which are situated on each floor. I wish more hotels would adopt this idea. We did not eat in the hotel but did have a drink in the bar which had a nice ambience, plus you could look over the rail tracks which my husband enjoyed being a retired rail employee. It's approximately a 25 minute walk to Cardiff Bay or you can take the train. There is a coastal road from Cardiff Bay where you can walk to Penarth, approximately 30 minutes. We also used the train to have day trips to Swansea and Barry Island. The weather was beautiful for October - blue skies and sunshine, what more could you ask for. This was our first visit to Cardiff and we loved it. Hopefully, we will be back and would have no hesitation in returning to the Clayton.

    « Very Convenient »

It's within 'spitting' distance of Cardiff central railway station and Mill lane, but really quiet. The booking in process faultless and the room great. Breakfast was an added bonus. definitely my fav place to stay in Cardiff.

    « Really comfortable stay »

The Clayton is a lovely hotel in the city centre of Cardiff. It's situated right next to the railway station, so is very convenient for rail travellers. We arrived before our check in time but we were able to leave our luggage safely at reception before going out to explore the city. On the day of departure we were able to leave our luggage until we caught our late afternoon train...that's a brilliant service. The staff were pleasant and friendly. The room we had was comfortable and clean. Perhaps the only drawback was the size of the bathroom...the space could have been maximised if there was a shower cubicle rather than shower over bath, which we'd prefer anyway, to be honest! Tea and coffee facilities in the room were good. The bed was comfortable...a bonus at the end of the day having walked miles around the city. The bar is ok but when we asked for lemon in out G&T fingers rather than tongs were used...mmm. Breakfast was a fabulous set up, serve yourself to juices, cereal, porridge (it was lovely), cooked breakfast, pastries and toast. Couldn't fault it. We had a fabulous 3 days in Cardiff and the hotel contributed towards it. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

    « Gorgeous hotel! »

Midway through our 3 day visit, it's fabulous so far! Feels really luxurious, refreshing everything daily (and I mean everything, even down to the coffee machine pod things!) It's really central which is helpful for shopping and sightseeing! From the bar there's a large range of food and drinks, you can also watch the trains go by from there frequently which my partner and I like. Depending on what side of the hotel youre on you can see your car in the carpark which is reassuring. It has everything you could possibly need, hairdryers, safe, iron and board etc. Everything is so comfy and beautiful! No complaints so far, don't want to leave!

« Very comfortable and convenient »

This is an excellent hotel, very comfortable and clean and conveniently situated close to rail station, the Principality Stadium, the Motorpoint Arena, bus services and all amenities - shops, restaurants, etc. We received a genuine welcome and found all the staff we encountered to be friendly, extremely helpful. We didn't take dinner in the restaurant, but we did enjoy a delightful afternoon tea and an excellent buffet breakfast on each morning of our stay.

    « Great hotel »

My partner and I stayed here for three nights in early November. We had one of the king rooms which was extremely comfortable and had a great view of the city. Breakfast was really lovely too. One point though, each time you arrive for breakfast you are asked if you have "eaten breakfast here before". This was fine the first morning as we said "No" and breakfast services were explained. My partner is celiac and asked for gluten free toast with poached eggs. This was duly served, perfectly cooked, within five minutes. However, on the second and third mornings we were asked the same thing, to which we replied "yes". Unfortunately, this meant that we were then left trying to catch a member of staff's attention to place his order for the gluten free option. Would it not be better for staff to ask "Do you need anything other than the buffet breakfast?". That way guests could engage on the other options available each time they visit. It's true one of the lifts was out of order for much of our stay, however we were on the ninth floor and we were actually surprised how little time we had to wait for the lift. The other lift as operating fine on the day we left. Overall we would definitely stay in The Clayton again, and the reduced parking is a great bonus for those guests travelling by car.

    « Drunks paradise »

This hotel is surrounded by bars, pubs and similar facilities. We counted 29 in the street where the hotel is located The staff at this hotel was very helpful, the hotel itself unremarkable The included breakfast was better than average

« Good for sleeping, the rest is half-half »

I was there for 3 nights, the place is not bad, walking distance from a lot of restaurants, the Cardiff castle and the bay area. The rooms are equiped with a TV, cattle for coffee/tea in the room, and iron and ironing board which was handy for me. Pro/Con: The breakfast is centered about the English Breakfast, which is great, expect for vegetarians, the rest of the breakfast doesn't offer a lot more. Con: Bathroom is ok, not big but good enough to have a shower, but my problem is that the sinks are so small, I washed hands and face in the bathtub. Con: There is no free parking, the only park is 50 meters from the hotel, and costs 9 pounds/day. Con: the hotel is nearly on the railway, some rooms that face the railway gets a bit noisy. Big Con: And the worst of the things is their maintenance, I had a trouble in the room and they assistance guy was off for the weekend, had to change the room, also one of the two lifts broke the first morning we were there, and the only working lift was too crowded, we had to wait for 5-10 minutes each time we wanted to get down or up from the top most floors, really bad management, I left the hotel and the lift was still broken.

    4
    « Clean and spacious »

The hotel was lovely, clean and very spacious. Staff were extremely polite and helpful. Beds were very comfortable. We had a double bed and a single. I did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on food. The only negative comment I can give is that the hotel was fully booked and there was only 1 lift working. This caused problems as we were on the seventh floor and we did not reach the ground floor straight away we rode the lift up to the 10th floor. On more than one occasion we were in the lift for at least 5 minutes as we rode from the 10th down to the 2nd floor and then back to the 9th floor! Please repair the second lift asap.

    4
    « perfect location »

Right next to the central rail station and ideal for visiting this great City. Modern , very clean rooms but avoid the ones next to the lift shafts - constantly bangs the bed, one lift was out of order all the time i was there so long delays for the only other one, used the stairs every time for 4th floor. Had evening meal which was ok but loads of better choices very nearby, enjoyed the breakfast buffet

    « Lovely hotel »

This hotel was lovely, with comfortable room and friendly, helpful staff. Location was great to be able to walk to Cardiff Bay, restaurants, shopping, castle & museums as well as Cardiff Central Train station. Only one minor uncomfortable thing for us was that we couldn't get the room cool enough. We prefer the room really chilly so that's just a personal issue. The bed had a fairly heavy comforter but no top sheet which is what most hotels seem to be using these days. Complimentary Bottled water, coffee, tea & cookies were in the room. Breakfast is offered at the hotel but for a charge.

« Just an overnight stop but great value and a warm welcome »

Excellent hotel for a visit to Cardiff centrally located within easy walking distance of Cardiff Central station and all shops restaurants and pubs that Cardiff has to offer located only a couple of hundred yards from Cardiff central Rail station, opposite the Great Western pub, The hotel has a great restaurant and great food rooms are comfortable and staff very helpful and welcoming great hotel for a short stay and centrally located for all that Cardiff has to offer

    « Great location »

Booked a king room at the Clayton over the busy Halloween weekend.First warning advertisement states "some" rooms have a separate shower and bath. This isn't very obvious in the PR.Of course our room didn't and when I contacted the receptionist she stated no rooms did have a separate shower and bath.So which is it?We stayed on the 9th floor ; do not have a room on a lower floor if street noise is an issue for you.The on going rail works and expected party noise was just bearable.Room itself was fine but not what I would of I expected for a 4 star king room. However it was clean and the bed was extremely comfy.Staff were great and very helpful. We didn't eat at the restaurent due to previous reviews but did have room service, which was fine.Only 1 lift working at the weekend ,not good enough.Positives ; great staff, fantastic location.

    3
« Reasonable if noisy rooms , limited menu »

First time here. Usual hotel was full. Rooms are good size but a bit noisy due to proximity to rail track. Restaurant menu was a bit limited. Also children in the restaurant entertained by noisy tablets and distinct lack of concern for other diners, 8:00 pm should be able to eat in some peace.

    4
    « First visit »

Just returned from a 3 night stay. Excellent location and very pleased with our stay except for 1 of the lifts out of order for the whole of our 3 night stay. This was totally unacceptable for a 200+ room hotel managing on 1 lift. We were on a high floor and waited absolutely ages for the lift.

    « Very Comfortable Hotel »

The Clayton Hotel in Cardiff is simply a great place to stay when visiting the city. It is situated in the city centre close to Cardiff Castle. I have stayed here 4 times this year my recent visit was for 2 nights in October. They have wonderful staff who will make your stay very enjoyable from the moment you arrive to check in. The check in is quick and always greeted by a smile and warm welcome. The rooms are beautifully designed with great facilities. Each morning a first class breakfast awaits the guests ranging from a light to a full breakfast. The breakfast room is bright and spacious. Not to forget the bar where one can relax to enjoy a drink and have a nightcap before retiring for the night to sleep in their very comfortable beds. I will be back very soon. Congratulations to all the team for making my visits so very enjoyable.

« Great Location, Average Rooms »

This was my first trip to Cardiff so wanted a hotel where I could leave my car and explore the city on foot. Location wise this hotel is perfect, everything is a short walk; we visited the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff Castle, The National Museum and Cardiff Bay. Also the hotel right next to the huge shopping centre (St. David's), this is brilliant with loads of good shops and restaurants. Now on to the hotel, first off I got a good price via Booking.com, only £55 per night for a family room. I read some reviews and noticed some people complaining that the hotel backs on to a mainline railway and Cardiff Station, the advice they were giving was to request a room on a high floor with a city view (away from the station). I did this and received a quick reply saying the hotel would do their best to assist. Check in was quick and easy, my room was on the 7th floor (quite high so I was happy), however when I looked out my window all I could see was 4 wide railway tracks and the start of the station! I am a light sleeper so was worried, I could hear the trains throughout the night but for £55 couldn't really complain. The hotel does not have onsite parking, however they do offer reduced fees if you park at the NCP across the road - this was £6 per day.

    « Halloween 2016 »

We've been frequent visitors to the Clayton Hotel ( previously the Maldron) since 2011, sadly on this occasion I'm afraid to say how disappointed we were with our stay, the hotel was at full occupancy on sat 29th Oct, we were allocated a disabled room on the 9th floor during our 2 night stay, the bathroom area was very spacious but sadly one of the lifts was out of service which resulted in long delays to And from our floor, we were also surprised that for a 4star hotel there were no shaver points in this room, nor were there any vanity surfaces in the bathroom, no drawers in the bedroom tables of which there were 3 tables and only one chair! There was also no laundry facility available and lastly not being able to use our best western members card as we had booked through booking.com and not Best Western direct to claim our points! These issues were raised with Jennifer the receptionist at check out this morning who couldn't apologise enough, sadly we were unable to change rooms as the hotel was full on Saturday night, all the above side, I would not rule out staying here again as the location is excellent and having stayed here many times previously this was the only one with reason for complaint, I would however suggest if the disabled rooms are going to be let out during maximum occupancy periods then they should be serviceable for both disabled and able bodied guests?? Finally a massive thanks to the lovely Irish receptionist who rescued us from being stuck in Wood Street Car Park when we couldn't get out of the ticketed barrier on departure.

    « A comfy bed but a noisy location »

I stayed here last week as part of a business trip to Cardiff. At check in the staff were friendly and helpful, although they did forget to mention what time breakfast was served and what floor it was on. The room itself was big, I had a room which had a double and a single bed. It was clean and nicely furnished. The bathroom was small but again it was clean and the water for my shower was hot. My only negative comment would be that it was quite a noisy location. It's quite close to the railway so every time a train passed at night I'd wake up, even ended up dreaming of trains! There's also quite a bit of street noise, you can hear cars and lorries passing and shouting/talking from the pedestrians (even heard someone outside sneeze at one point). The breakfast in the morning is lovely, everything you could think of! Cooked breakfast, fruit, cereal, pastries, you name it and it's probably there! It's a buffet style so you can keep going back for more. Overall it's a nice hotel, it's just a shame about the noise.

« Not the best experience... »

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Clayton, generally had a lovely short break away from home, the hotel is in a perfect position, ideal for shopping and exploring Cardiff. Unfortunately though we didn't have the best experience and wish to write this review as a warning to future guests. The Clayton still allows smoking in some of the rooms, and we were unlucky enough to be allocated into one of these (something I really think should have been run passed us as we checked in). When I spoke to reception about this we were moved for our second night which we really appreciated, but this really let us down especially as no apology was given and we were told we should have specifically requested a non-smoking room - something that is apparently clear on the booking system (it really isn't - I've gone back and checked). As a manager in a hotel myself I understand that sometimes these things cannot be helped but it was a very disappointing experience especially as no gesture of good will was offered to us. I did leave the hotel with the opinion that despite these issues I would potentially stay again but I have twice contacted the hotel via email since checking out regarding an issue with the bill and have not received any response, therefore because of this complete lack of customer service i would not stay again and wouldn't recommend it to any family or friends.

    « Good location »

Hotel located in the city center, it is closed to many restaurants, shops, department stores and bus station. If you have a car, they have deal with parking lots which opposite the building and fare will be at 9 pounds/day. Hotel lobby is small, staff services are ok not over expectation. Room is decent, room size is ok not too big or too small(we stay for 3 adults with 3 beds). Bathroom is quite small and had bad smell of shower curtain and dont have ventilation fan. There are no refrigerator in room, window cannot open for security, free wifi and our room has city view. P.S. Hotel room rate is reasonable and should ask for high floor and away form noise of train.

« Great staff, pity about the rest. »

Really friendly and helpful staff. Nice clean, modern hotel. Our room was on the 9th floor was at the end of the corridor, so we thought it would be fairly quiet, until we went in and looked out of the window. It overlooked the railway line and why the trains have to hoot hoot in the early hours I don't know! Very uncomfortable bed, the wife and I both waking with back ache. The worse thing was the food, we thought we would have dinner in the hotel restaurant, the starters were ok, although my pate could of come with a better piece of bread than a slice from a baguette. The mains were disappointing, my burger was tasteless and come complete with a dry bun, the onion rings were literally dripping with oil. My wife had steak which was full of gristle. To be fair we did complain and get one free pudding as compensation. Breakfast was not much better, good choice of cereal and a small selection of meats and cheeses. The cooked food was awful, the bacon was very fatty and dripping in grease, the sausages tasted as though there was very little meat and lots of grain. My wife ordered 2 poached eggs, she waited about 15 minutes and there was no sign so she chased up the waiter and a few minutes later they arrived, complete with a 4 inch black hair. They went back. Also slightly annoying that there is no car park, but there is a multi story nearby where you can get discounted parking at £9 per 24 hours. Overall the staff are great, the hotel is OK but the restaurant/breakfast room is very poor.

« The place to stay »

Just got back after a 3 night stay at "The Clayton" what a perfect trip...ideal location for shopping which we did in abundance. 2 minutes from the centre, short walk to the bay...we had what they say is the best room in the hotel 1101 giving us 270° view of cardiff ...stunning ..clean and will definitely be returning. The hotels restaurant is well worth a visit ..very nice View from the hotel room in pic

« Ok but room for improvement »

Check in was good once we found the actual entrance. Frontage lacks a bit of identity and it's round the side and not that obvious. Booked through secret escapes so had afternoon tea, a cocktail and breakfast included. Hotel was busy so only one slot available that day else would have been shifted to the Sunday which we couldn't have made. Book in advance is the answer. Room was OK. Great views. And lifts worked thankfully as were on the 8th floor. The afternoon tea was OK. Cute sandwiches with a scone macaroons and fruit cake. Unlimited tea/coffee. Filled a gap. The free cocktail was limited to one type but you could pay extra to upgrade to a better one. Slept ok. No noise impact from the station. Breakfast was a let down. No mushrooms which are my favourite. The scrambled egg tasted fake although you could order fried/boiled or an omelette. The selection of juices was good. The toaster was more of a warmer so toast was soggy. Had much better breakfasts elsewhere. Parked in wood Street Mscp where they offer reduced rates but you do feel like you are in quite a run down part of town which you actually aren't. Staff worked hard and were polite and helpful. Good staff. Good hotel. Average food.

« Still just as fabulous »

I revisited The Clayton again recently, whilst working for a week at the theatre, and the staff were so lovely - just like going home. They went out of their way to be helpful. Thank you guys, for everything.

    « AVERAGE »

We booked a while ago for an overnight stay and wanted to take advantage of the subsidised parking offered. I rang before we set off to get the postcode and address of the car park as I don't know the area. We drove round aimlessly for a while as we had been given the wrong postcode and had to ring the hotel again parked up on the kerb. The car park is not one I'd be comfortable using if travelling alone . It is very run down and a number of vagrants frequent it. It is accessible only from a dirty side street. Our room was fine - very clean and comfortable and well appointed. The air conditioning system had clearly been updated since the manual was published and we couldn't work it very well but that was ok. It was breakfast that let this hotel down monumentally. We had pre- booked for £10 each . The choice was poor - only eggs were scrambled and any others sought had to be ordered from one of the staff as they hurtled past. Then came the interminable wait and renewed request until such time as they either arrived cold or as in our case we gave up. Bacon overcooked cardboard, black pudding raw , coffee jugs empty and no milk on the tables despite assurances it was. Chaotic scrum round the one toast machine. Constantly having to ask for basic items wasn't what I'd expect for that price. A complaint to reception eventually brought the restaurant manager whose explanation was they were very very busy as there had been lots of walk- ins !! ....So don't accept them when your own residents are booked in and you won't be able to cope .

« View over Cardiff Bay a real bonus. »

We recently returned from a very enjoyable two night stay at this very handily located hotel. It is just a few minutes walk from the train station (and yes as stated elsewhere trains do run right alongside it) and the varied night-life of the city. We were lucky enough to have a room on the 10th floor and although there was the rumble of trains early in the morning noise was not really an issue for us. The room was spotlessly clean and adequately furnished for our purposes with a comfortable bed. The bathroom too was spotlessly clean with a shower with great water pressure. All in all we had two very good nights sleep. We cannot comment on the food or the bar here as we did not indulge due to the proliferation of other available establishments that catered for those needs nearby. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay but the real bonus was the view towards Cardiff Bay. Would definitely stay here again.

« Yet another great stay »

Stayed back the beginning of October, friendly staff, great location, lovely rooms. I highly recommend this hotel when visiting cardiff, good location just opposite the train station and right in the centre of Cardiff city. Thanks for a lovely stay!

« If you like trains... »

This is an average 3 star location, not 4 as advertised. The room was smallish, but fairly clean. The bedding was poor. The biggest issue was the trains which run right next to the building on multiple tracks. I would not stay here again. Disappointed.

« Great hotel in a fantastic location »

I stayed here for a week in a twin room which was actually a double bed and a single bed. The room was surprisingly spacious, spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Food in the restaurant was good, quite big portions though! Breakfast had lots of different options, healthy, full English etc. For a big hotel it never seemed crowded. Only downside was that there is a £5 tray charge for room service even though the prices on the room service menu are higher than in the restaurant. I would definitely stay here again, the location was excellent, situated two minutes from the station and just a short walk from shops, cinema, the theatre and restaurants.

    « Surprise 21st Birthday Afternoon Tea »

Huge thanks to Sue Carde and her team. Eight of us for a surprise afternoon tea for my daughters 21st Birthday. The hotel staff couldn't have done more for us. I dropped off her cake, presents and balloons in advance, when we arrived later that day, the table was set, her cake and presents arranged on a side table. The afternoon tea with pimms was gorgeous, plenty of food, the restaurant staff couldn't have been more attentive. They happily let us take photos, and light the cake and sing happy birthday. The other guests were a joy, and joined in! It was a fabulous few hours. Thank you for making her special day a very memorable one.

« Stylish and comfortable, a great stop for the business traveller »

I stayed over for one night on business, wanting a quieter hotel near the station. I went for an executive room and was really pleased with the level of comfort and the quality of service on offer at the hotel. Decent wine selection in the hotel bar, and a great range of breakfast eats in the morning. I would happily come back to stay here again, and had a great nights' sleep.

Brilliant hotel with all the features we were looking for at that point in time close to train station and city centre. Lovely staff and fast and delicious room service. quiet and central. Up to date decor

Third time at this hotel but first under the Clayton banner, not disappointed either, wonderful hotel, excellent staff and brilliant location, you really need to look no further if you are planning a stay in Cardiff.

    « NO BREAKFAST »

Disappointed that when using my Best Western points for the 2 night stay our breakfast was not included. Being a "valid" Best Western customer and at the Elite rewards level this is not good practice.

« Great location, friendly staff »

I stayed there a business trip, I was really impressed with the hotel. The rooms are really cleaned, quiet and well designed. The reception staff were really friendly especially Jennifer, so was the restaurant staff. I had dinner one night and the food was really good, definitely better than anything I experimented on the high street (chain restaurants everywhere). Really good buffet breakfast too, worth the 10pounds. Good value for money.

« Grand View On The Top Floor »

The view on the 11th Floor was amazing. The whole city was lit up. The beds were very comfortable and a decent size t.v. in the room. The water pressure was not so good when you took a shower. Breakfast was not included in the price but this could be purchased in advance for £10 a saving of £2.95 if you had it on the day. The choice was adequate and you could have as much or as little as you want. My husband finished before me and the waitress took his plate away without asking if he had finished. I thought that was rude of her and she should have waited for both of us to finish. The rooms were serviced daily and fresh towels were given. The room can get very hot during the night and the air condition did not work. You are not allowed to open the windows or they will charge you £100. Watch out for the extra charges. £5 tray charge per person if you order room service.

« Great staff needing better support from the management. »

My office booked me in here for a night recently- all the info I could find said it was a 4 star hotel, so was looking forward to my stay. Made my way along the dirty uneven right of way from the nearby NCP, (hotel provide a discount on the usual NCP ransom) and got a very nice welcome on checkin. Room was on the top floor, railway side, with reasonable views across the city and out into the Bristol Channel. Decided to have a drink and dinner in the first floor restaurant, and the staff went out of their way to come up with a meal that wasn't either a special or on the menu. Top marks for that. However, wanted to start with a Kir Royale- they were out of Creme de Cassis. Decided to request a Margarita- they'd run out of Cointreau. Why don't the management empower staff to run to the nearest off-license in such situations? Cointreau in particular was such a significant component of many cocktails on their list, I was amazed they were out, and could not just pop out and get some. Bed was low-end, with terrible cheap pillows; otherwise the room was well equipped and very clean. No problem with train noise and very happy with staff and service.

« Great value city centre hotel »

We stayed overnight for the Cardiff Half Marathon, originally booking a double room for me and my husband we deiced to add on our two children aged 5 & 6. This was easily accommodated at no additional charge thanks to the friendly reception staff. We found our room to be clean, tidy and well equipped with a double bed and single for the children. The did also offer a roll away however I didn't feel this was necessary due to their ages. We added breakfast at a total charge of £20 which was a full buffet style with hot and continental items. The food was very good and the restaurant staff were very efficient. The hotel is located perfectly next to Cardiff Central station and all the restaurants, bars and shopping areas. We parked our car in the nearby NCP where the hotel give you a discount. Our overnight stay was only £9. The Brazilian rodizio restaurant next door is a must as it is great value and the food is outstanding! Overall a perfect hotel for a short stay in Cardiff.

« Nice hotel, let down by restaurant. »

We stayed here for 2 nights over the weekend of the Cardiff half marathon. Hotel was nice and clean although the room we had was a little small for 3 people. We chose to decline room service as our stuff was everywhere in the room due to lack of space (only 6 coat hangers for 3 people!). However it was clean and tidy and had everything we needed. We paid for a late check out on the day of the room which worked fine despite initially being told this was subject to availability (we'd had a confirmation email from booking.com but apparently this didn't mean anything!). Staff were also helpful, appearing with in minutes to sort out the television that wasn't working. My only really gripe is the restaurant. Breakfast was nothing to write home about, although plenty of choice there was little taste. We ate in the restaurant again before we checked out (too exhausted to go elsewhere!) And despite being one of only 3 tables in there the service was very slow. We were asked what we want to order without being given menus, then it was a further 15 mins before anyone came back. In total it was almost an hour before our food came out (soup, a salad and a burger). The soup was luke warm at best and the chicken in the salad very tough. We didn't have the time to wait to send anything back thou so didn't complain. All in all, nice hotel, helpful staff but restaurant needs great improvement.

    « Staff excellent »

The staff here go out of their way to make you feel at home, and make a stay from home as bearable as it can be. I recently had to stay there for 5 days for work purpose, my room had no fridge..but they found me one immediately and brought it..my air con was making a loud noise..they fixed it within 20 mins of me asking..and after a taxi did not arrive they booked another and put it on their own hotel account..they go the extra mile to pull out all the stops!! very profesional, very polite. Also great central location to the shops and restaurants..Tip, ask for a room higher up if you a light sleeper..may here the trains during the night.

« Excellent Hotel in a great location »

Stayed at this hotel on a 1 night stay with afternoon tea & cocktail package for the 3 of us. Received a warm welcome at reception and the staff were very friendly and attentive. They issued us with the room key along with an afternoon tea vouchers and cocktail vouchers and booked a table at the restaurant for our afternoon tea. Our rooms were clean and comfortable with great views up on the 10th floor where our rooms were. The afternoon tea was very good quality and fresh. The warm quiche was a nice touch as was the vanilla custard to go with our cakes. After our evening stroll down to Cardiff Bay and back we went to the bar for our cocktail. It was a house cocktail but was very nice and I would have had another one if I had not been so tired. Breakfast was very good and plentiful. Overall I recommend this hotel to anyone and would definitely stay again in the future.

« Nice staff but £100 fine for opening your window »

£240 per night was the most expensive hotel I'd stayed in. The upside was the friendly helpful staff and the excellent cleanliness. Our room had a niosy leak into the toilet bowl when we arrived, fixed expertly and quickly by a staff member. Very comfy bed and quiet. Breakfast OK but no vegetarian options were listed. Was eventually given some vege sausages. Surprised the cereal was in big Tupperware containers rather than in individual branded packets as they were at the last - much cheaper hotel. After breakfast I looked at the hotel welcome brouchure and was really shocked to find valued guests being addressed as suspects with a list of how much you will bee charged if you steal things from the room; this varied from £5 for the ( understandably grubby brochure. After all no one would want to pay £5, so it had probably been there for a very long time) to several hundred for the TV! In small print on page 3 there was an item saying guests would be fined £100 if they opened the window in their room. For legal reasons I am unable to say whether or not I opened the window by a few inches the night before. Obviously, a hotel can make it'd own rules but I do think we should have been informed about the possible fine for opening the window before we paid for the room. In that case we would have been able to make an informed choice about whether we wished to stay at that particular hotel.

« Great location, excellent accommodation »

Centrally located adjacent to the train station (although train noise would only disturb a very light sleeper), this hotel is great value for money. Nicely appointed rooms with aircon and TV. Bed was firm but comfortable. Has its own bar and restaurant which are well priced, if you don't want to explore the central town area. Plenty of bars nearby to choose from. A few hundred metres from the Cardiff Cake gates and a similar distance to the Stadium. Also a short(-ish) walk (2km?) to the Millennium Centre and the Doctor Who Experience...

« Lovely hotel, brilliant location! »

Stayed here for 2 nights, my boyfriend asked for the Sparking birthday package when booking the room as a surprise for my birthday, arrived the room and everything was already there, a botel of prosecco followed by a chocolate cake and plate of chocolates with a card from the hotel staff (as seen in my photos) The room was lovely, really clean (floor 10 highly recommended with great views) Staff were very welcoming!! I highly recommend everyone to try the restaurant on the 1st floor, amazing food and cocktails!! Very happy staff who make you feel very welcome and always happy to help! Overall the 2 nights turned out to be great, location really good and only about 2 min walk to the shopping centre with enough restaurants and bars around you! Parking turned out to be only £18 for over 48 hours for us, this was because of the great discount you get from this hotel!!Brilliant hotel, will definitely be back :)

« Great staff, awful pillows! »

Like many others, we thought that the hotel is in a great central location with good parking nearby. The staff were helpful and friendly without exception. Having said that, we wouldn't return to a Clayton Hotel because of the dreadful pillows (the fibre in them had condensed down to the consistency of cold chewing gum) and a poor mattress. We travel a lot on business and the worst thing is a bad nights sleep because of poor bedding. And of course, it's too late to do anything about it the next day. On the plus side, the air con in the room was quiet and efficient.

« Great accommodation for short trips »

We stayed here for 1 night for a night out. We booked a triple room with one single and one double bed. The hotel itself is very central, very close to the train station and a short walk from the shopping centres and nightlife. They offer a left luggage facility where you can leave your bags before you check in or after you've checked out so that you don't have to carry everything around (this was free of charge too!) The staff are very friendly and attentive on arrival. Our room was ready before check in time (check in is usually 2pm but we were in our room by 12.30) so it's worth going to check with the reception team when you're leaving your luggage/when you arrive if you're able to go to your room! Our room had plenty of space. The bathroom had a bath and shower, although the shower took a few attempts to get it to work! I had a lovely bath in the morning before leaving, the hot water was not in short supply. The air conditioning was also a little tricky to figure out until I read the room manual which told you how to use it. Our room was very very warm when we arrived so we had to close the curtains as the sun was coming straight through and heating the place up! The beds themselves were decent to sleep on, the pillows though were very firm, I suppose you could request softer pillows at reception but I didn't have the time to bother, they did the job. We had 2 check in cards which came in handy as I came home earlier than my friend did so they could let themselves in. The trains don't make that much noise unless they toot their horns, otherwise it's just a little rumble. I think it depends on how much of a light sleeper you are. We were on the 8th floor and it wasn't a problem for us, we were also facing the tracks. The only problem I had was that I'd forgotten to put the 'do not disturb' sign on the door so housekeeping did knock our door and come in at about 10am. That was my own fault though! Silly me. Check out isn't until 12 which is handy, you have plenty of time to sort your things and get out for the day. Overall it was a pleasant stay, would definitely stay again for the night!

Hotel located right by Cardiff Central Station. Two minute walk. Arrived before official check so room was not ready, however desk agent noticed right away that I had come a long way and had my room ready within 15 minutes. That's service Room was clean and modern with everything working. Bar service was acceptable given the number of guests that were being served. Used restaurant for breakfast both mornings. Buffet was excellent with a wide variety of meats and eggs Very impressed with the hotel and highly recommend it

« Great location, luxury room »

I stayed for 2 nights in room 706, which is a "king" room with floor to ceiling windows on two sides. Although I was quite high up, there was some noise from Walkabout, which was hosting some event for freshers week. By 11pm it seemed to quieten down and I had a really good night's sleep. Breakfast was delicious, the wifi worked really well and the room was spacious with a sofa and coffee table. I'd definitely return in future.

    « Wonderful Small Hotel »

We stayed in the Clayton Hotel mainly because of reviews that said it was close to train station. Having never been to Cardiff this was what we were looking for. We were not disappointed. Yes, it is close to hotel, but also close for a visitor to sight see. Ramona, at the front desk, was so helpful and friendly. Our room was fine. We had a higher floor and the train noise did not bother us at all. We ate in the restaurant 3 times and enjoyed it each time. George, one of the servers, was so much fun. He was the reason that we came back to the restaurant. He greeted us like old friends each time.

« Decent hotel with a few issues »

Overall the hotel is really good. It's centrally located and seems to have been recently refurbished. There were a Few issues though. The walls are thin, now this could be due to the fact that I was Ina room with a connecting door, but my first night a group of drunken men returned to the room and made quite the racket. I finally called down to the front desk and they took care of the situation promptly. Housekeeping cleared my bathroom of all toiletries on the first day, but never replaced them, so I had to go hunting for a bar of soap. The next 2 nights sleep weren't great either as the air/fan in the room was incredibly loud and unfortunately I am someone who has a very hard time sleeping with that type of noise. I will say that for being in the city center and near the train station, the outdoor noises were never an issue. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Overall I had a good stay and would probably try them again in the future, but this time if make sure that I didn't have a connecting room.

    « stayed for a week!! »

We were booked here for the Golden Oldies Rugby Festival and could not have asked for a better place to stay. Catherine was amazing at the Front Desk even when confronted with hordes of tired old guys! The restaurant was awesome as the breakfast was included in our package. Victor and George were amazing servers as even when the restaurant was full of hung over hungry people they stayed positive. Thanks ! Check out was super simple and the trains were not an issue, we were on the 10th floor overlooking the tracks. We enjoyed the bar, and the gym as well and the local knowledge of the area was obvious with schedules and places to see, or avoid! Having to view my first Hen party was an excellent sidebar to. Right in the middle of everything, and super clean and safe with great housekeepers' just stay here and be happy!! And only 5 pounds for the bus ride in from the airport and you are just across the street from the Hotel. Oh and don't forget to look right first before crossing the street, we had some close calls!

« Nice hotel in a great location »

I stayed here with my five year old daughter for three nights last weekend for the Roald Dahl 100 events. We arrived on Friday to a very busy lobby as a large group were checking in, but the friendly receptionist had us checked in within five minutes which was great :) We were in Room 425, on the fourth floor. The room itself had a view over the restaurant smoking area which was a little disappointing as I had requested a room with a decent view for my little girl who was very excited about being able to see the trains leaving the railway station - granted this was in the 'Special Requests' section on Booking.com so was not guaranteed, just luck I guess! The room itself was very clean and spacious, nicely furnished with a nice comfy bed and good mirrors/lighting for getting make up on etc. The only thing I could complain about is that the room is right next door to what I assume is a store - from early morning the cleaners were in and out every 5 or 10 minutes, and every time they let the door close with a very loud BANG after them. This sounds like quite a petty nuance but when it's happening every 10 minutes and you're trying to have a tiny lie-in, it's rather annoying! Perhaps staff could be a bit more considerate of that. Other than that though, the room was very nice. We had afternoon tea on the first day which was lovely - gorgeous cakes and buns, and the pleasant waiter was very helpful. The hotel is in a great location and a perfect base for exploring Cardiff. Would definitely stay again, although not in the same room and perhaps with a better view next time :)

« Why it is average for me? »

Although this is a 5 star hotel it was an average experience for me, why? Well lets start with the room, it is clean but missing some things that you can easily find at any five star hotel around the world such as a minibar, such as sleepers ( i phoned the front desk when I saw there are no sleepers the lady told me that it comes with a package (?) for 20£, of course I did not get it), or complimentary a bottle of water however there are complimentary coffee and tea, kettle, mugs and glasses, housekeeping works very well, bathroom supplies are basic only shampoo and body wash ( this one smells very well, spicy!!) no moisturizer, no conditioner or others. There is a safe which works very well, furniture is simple, TV, there is also a hair drier. I did not dine here but breakfast is 10£ if you pay advance when you check-in but 12.95£ for walk-ins. Best thing about this hotel is that it is the closest hotel to the Cardiff Central train station, only 150 meters, so if you have luggages then this hotel is the best option. As it is close to the train station you may hear trains passing by all the time so if you are picky about the noise then you must ask rooms on upper levels ( i stayed on 11th and could hear trains easily) or the ones facing the St.Mary street. The hotel is also in the middle of everything, close to main shopping centers, beautiful arcades of Cardiff, bus stops, walking distance to Cardiff bay area. The front desk is ok, sorry to say but I have seen more friendly ones here it seems like duty rather than hospitality but I loved Cardiff, amazing warm genuine people, hope to come back soon.

    « Cannot fault it! Don't hesitate. »

Stayed for 1 night at the beginning of September. I can tell you I was sad to leave and have already booked again for 3 nights in November. It was not the first time I've stayed here as we like to come to Cardiff for a city break. We had a corner room (406) which had beautiful views down st Mary's street. The room was spotless and fresh, providing complimentary water, amazing comfy bed, relatively spacious room, lovely big TV, air conditioning and even a sofa! Dressing gowns and slippers are also provided, so soft! (miles too big for me as I'm only small but thoroughly enjoyed lounging around in one in the evening!) We didn't book breakfast at the hotel, as it was £10 per person per morning and we thought that was maybe quite steep. Then we found out it's a buffet and vitality breakfast and was kicking ourselves! So definitely booked it for November! If you decide to not book breakfast then it's £12.95 per person if you decide you want it when you arrive at the hotel. Location is fab. The train station is a minutes walk away, maybe even less. Taxis lined up outside the train station so even though you don't need one to get to the hotel, if you fancy a day down Cardiff bay, just walk around the corner from the hotel and hop in one. They'll take you there for £6/£7. The room was surprising quiet considering the railway was so close, and trains go at all times of the night. The main shopping centre of st Davids and high street is also 2/3 minute walk, also extremely close, so shop until your hearts content. If you're looking for a place to stay as you're seeing a show/concert, the motorpoint arena is a 5 minute walk down a straight road from the hotel - amazing! I also know the principality is also very close, so is Cardiff castle and the Wales millennium centre is located in the bay. Staff at reception can't do enough for you, they're all so lovely. Nothing is ever too much. Housekeeping are also really attentive. Food was really nice at the hotel, especially the chocolate pudding we had will vanilla ice cream. The restaurant and bar area is really warm and friendly and a lovely place to relax in the evening. Thank you to all at the hotel, we can't wait to come back!

    « Excellent friendly hotel »

I have just returned from a two night stay at this hotel. This is my second stay at this hotel and have found it to be excellent both times. An excellent room; comfortable bed, powerful shower and all perfectly clean. The breakfast is excellent; the chef willing to prepare specific requests. However, a great attribute to this hotel is the friendly staff. Each members of staff I met was efficient, had a warmth of approach and genuinely seemed to want you to have a good stay. Well done Clayton Hotel. I would highly recommend this for an enjoyable stay in heart of Cardiff centre.

« Extremely comfortable and very helpful staff »

Very comfy bed. Room not noisy despite hotel being ideally situated a couple of minutes walk from Central rail station, taxi ranks and city centre. Staff couldn't be more helpful. I'd forgotten my dressing gown and they sorted me out. They gave advice on menu and offered to sort out additional vegetarian option- didn't need to do that as menu fine. Colleague recommended meat based courses and raved about restaurant at base of hotel. Food good, breakfast lovely. I will book my family in hear for a shopping trip. Ideal situation, immaculately clean and friendly

Breakfast was very good. By this time on my trip I switched to breakfast tea in the morning because coffee just isn't the same as in the US.. My main problem with hotel had to do with the shower. I need a walkin shower because I have a bad knee. Room was ok nothing special. Staff seemed friendly

    « Head for heights »

I visited the Clayton on 29th July with my son for one night. We stayed on the 11th floor looking out over Cardiff central station and across Cardiff Bay. I had previous stayed here before so I new that my fussy son would be ok with it. This review is joint between us. When first entering the hotel it is very clean with a modern look, the reception staff were extremely pleasant and helpful as we had turned up early and our room wasn't ready, they put our case in a dedicated (locked) luggage storage room. We were then given the keys (keycard) for room 1114. The facilities provided were: Safe Hangers Iron TV Tea/coffee Telephone Hairdryer Pencil and paper AIR CON Bathroom facilities: 2 x shampoo 2 x body wash Shower cap Soap 3 x bath sheet 3 x hand towel The room was very tidy with one double bed and one single bed both of which were very comfortable with two decent pillows per person space, so four for me on the double bed. It was very clean apart from being quite dusty on the window sill (little details which would have given 5 stars if done) and bird mess on the window. The overall room was in a good state of repair with slight peeling beginning on the bathroom ceiling. There was plenty of space to move around and two chairs for comfort. There are plugs powering the TV, kettle etc but only one by the double bed and none by the single bed, which caused annoyance to my son (being 12 he is glued to his phone and had to decide between battery life or lying down). We only stayed one hight hit no would definitely look at staying here again for a night in Cardiff, no noise (high up anyway) and right in the centre of town within easy reach of shops and food outlets. I would recommend this hotel but ask for a low floor unless you have a head for heights.

« Helpful professional staff make the difference, plus breakfast! »

Arrived by train, after 10pm, but only a well-lit safe 500 metre walk (for mum and teenage daughter) from platform to hotel entrance. From 11th floor (top) you look down on the railway track and station but even the 6am freight train is just a rumble as soundproofing is good. Our spacious "twin" room had both a standard double bed plus a 3' single. Everything was very clean and you can adjust aircon for yourself. Bathroom had a cloakroom-sized basin which would probably have been difficult for a wet-shave for my husband, and the shower was the fixed-head over-the-bath type which can be tricky if you are short - but water pressure good enough to reach you even if you had to shuffle down the bath so the water would go on your body not your head. Instant coffee, teabags, UHT milk, iced water from a machine in the corridor. The room wasvery quiet despite city centre location. Beware the allegedly "non-smoking" room - our first allocated room smelled strongly of stale smoke and Febreze - reception told me that a "smoking" room is reclassified as "non-smoking" once it has been out of commission for a week, and said the airconditioning would get rid of the smell. I had asked for a non-smoking room when booking, so was disappointed to find the room had any signs of being smoked in, but reluctantly accepted. We were lucky that due to a cancellation we could move to a genuinely "never a smoking room" at 11pm that night. The receptionist took the initiative on this and asked if we wanted the cancelled room - going beyond what she needed to do - and the staff generally took this approach - nothing was too much trouble and they offered help on their own initiative which was very refreshing. Breakfast was the best I have had in a large hotel - juices plus "detox water" (chilled water with cucumber floating in it), 3 types of pastry, full cooked including fried baby potatoes, cereal, fruit etc (some of it defrosted frozen berries I think but very nice), yogurt, all buffet style.Breakfast starts early enough for business - 6.30 am. Hotel looked after our bags after we checked out - no charge. Overall a very good experience. If you are visiting the university there are chain hotels nearer to the campus but I think this one is nearest to the railway station so ideal if you are coming by train no matter how late you arrive.

    « Another fantastic stay »

I've written a review in the past but feel it deserves another one if I'm honest. The same as my last review it was clean, comfortable, modern and well run. Staff were all lovely same as last time and food was amazing! And again every time I go to Cardiff I will use this hotel, business or pleasure. Thanks once again Clayton for another brilliant stay and please pass my compliments on to your lovely staff.

    « Nicely located »

I needed a convenient, comfortable, clean city hotel after arriving late in Cardiff by train and I got it along with excellent service and a 5 minute stroll into town. The staff were very friendly which matters a lot when you are in a hurry or are very tired.

Room good, location excellent, room service menu poor and expensive. Found the parking misleading on website it's an ncp multi storey across the road not convenient with a small child wouldn't have booked if I had known

    « A very pleasant stay »

This hotel is in a fabulous location and the service we received was outstanding. The room was very comfortable and clean and the two meals we had in the restaurant were lovely. It was perfect for a very short stay in Cardiff as we were able to get around from there easily. The close proximity to the train station did mean a little bit of noise but nothing too annoying.

« Best place to stay »

My friends and I had a lovely time while we're staying here. It's close to train station and in city centre. For myself, I would love to give 5 stars for the Clayton Hotel. Thank you for Jenifer at reception who look after us and welome smile. Food was good and added with healthy idea as detox water, rooms were clean and smell clean. I love to come back again.

    « Fantastic Hotel »

Myself and 11 friends stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is in an excellent position, a very short walk from the train station, shops and bars. We had triple rooms which were fantastic. They were cleaned every day. The staff were all really welcoming. Will definitely be staying here again.

« Nothing wrong, nothing to write home about »

Stayed here the night before the cricket. Booked late (my fault) so paid an exorbitant £269 for B&B for one night. This hotel is worth half that at most outside of peak booking times. On arrival some confusion about our room - I booked a family, was given a double. Initially looked like a big problem, but to be fair to the Irish chap on reception, he fixed it in 10 minutes. Rooms are clean and TV is good. Free wifi. Bathroom fine, if tiny. Breakfast is OK, pretty standard buffet fayre. Got the impression that this place is popular with lads weekends/stag and hen dos. A few groups in fancy dress in reception and, when going down for breakfast at 8.30 am, the sight of one guy swaying in his doorway whilst clinging on to a pint of bitter. It's OK, nothing that would make me stay again. I could have stayed at Celtic Manor for the same - should have.

    « Lovely stay »

Just arrived home after a along weekend in Cardiff with my husband and 4 year old son ? The hotel was lovely and modern and the food was very nice, hotel very clean and the staff are so friendly and helpful. The position of the hotel is perfect, 2 minute walk from the train station and only a short work to the shops and stadium , I could easily have stayed longer and will definitely be planning another trip soon. Thank you for a lovely stay x x

    « Midweek break »

We arrived late on a Monday pm to find the only room available for us was a 'smoking room'. I was shocked to say the least that there were still such rooms. We reluctantly went to the room but it was apparent as soon as reaching the corridor that it was indeed a smoking aera as there was a strong smell of smoke which was even worse in the room. We went to Reception who called the duty manager when we complained but after a length of time and phone calls to city centre hotels we had to stay in the room overnight as there was no other accomodation available. The staff did try to be as helpful as they could but having such rooms creates a difficult problem. Our stay improved when the following am we were moved to a room which didn't smell of smoke. We were given complimentary breakfast and parking and unfortunately charged for the room!! On our booking there was no option for non smoking rooms.

« Good Town Centre Location - Child friendly »

Good functional hotel for exploring Cardiff, close to everything. Rooms clean and comfortable, pleasant basic bar, good breakfast. Staff friendly overall but local knowledge a little lacking (when I asked for directions to The Odeon IMAX Cinema we were sent to The Vue Cinema instead resulting in missing the film we pre booked tickets for) Discounted Parking nearby a bonus

« Centrally located, close to sites, and high quality hotel »

We stayed here for a night recently to attend an evening Welsh banquet at Cardiff Castle. The hotel is conveniently located near the train station and a short walk (less than 10 minutes) from Cardiff Castle, by walking down a center city walking mall. The area was well lit and I felt very comfortable strolling between the castle and hotel. The Clayton Hotel, considered to be the city's largest city center hotel, is quite modern and has well-appointed rooms. The rooms are sound-proofed to allow for a great night's sleep. There is a workout suite, a room safe and complimentary WiFi. The complimentary breakfast offers both healthier options as well as a large array of typical Welsh breakfast fare. The reception staff and dining room staff were very cordial and willing to help with any request. I would strongly recommend this hotel.

    « Brilliant birthday visit »

We stayed one night to enable us to visit the Doctor Who Experience for my daughter's 17th birthday. The hotel was brilliant, the staff had organised balloons and banners as requested. The reception staff were so welcoming and friendly. They were running a lucky dip in aid on Great Ormond street and we were lucky enough to win an afternoon tea, which was amazing. I cannot find fault with our stay and will never stay anywhere else when we visit Cardiff. The staff are an absolute credit to the hotel.

    « Family Holiday - Triple room »

We needed a triple room in Cardiff for a family holiday and were quite happy to find one at the Clayton Hotel. It is located right next to the railway station, but is also walking distance to the Cardiff Castle and Museum & a few other sights of interest. Its also quite convenient to catch buses towards Mermaid quay. We only had breakfast at the hotel on one of the days (as we like to try variety) and it was a very good spread at a good rate. If you are here on a weekend, I would recommend taking the hotel breakfast option at least on Sunday as it is very difficult to find a place in Cardiff that opens for breakfast on Sunday before 10am. The staff was very sweet. They kept our luggage for us from checkout until we needed to catch our train in the evening, so convenience wise, this is a brilliant hotel option. The inhouse bar runs all day. They have lunch and dinner in their restaurant too, but we never had the opportunity as they close service quite quickly (around 9pm) There is room service of pizza and burgers until later, but it wasn't what we wanted to eat. There's a Brazilian restaurant next door which offers the Brazilian buffet option of salads or salads & meat if you want a more filling meal. Wifi was great in the lobby, but not too good on the higher floors (we were on 11th) and even phone signal wasn't too good inside either. Bathroom was a comfortable size and I wasn't banging my elbows in the bath. There was a tea kettle in the room, but we didn't have a mini fridge.

    « Good hotel »

Stayed at the Clayton Hotel for Bank Holiday.  The staff at reception were all friendly and helpful.  I arrived at about 1:00 and I optimistically asked whether the room was read.  They told me that if I wait 10  minutes or so it should be ready.,  Just as i was going up to the bar they told me it was ready.  The bar is on the first floor and you get great views from there.  Callum in the bar was great.   The hotel is basically a business hotel so I was surprised that there was no trouser press in the room.

    5
« Modern and confortable hotel »

Centrally located, right outside the Cardiff Central train station, it is the ideal place to explore Cardiff. The airport bus and almost all city buses stop at nearby bus stops. The hotel is modern, the rooms are big and very comfortable. They are soundproof so you do not hear the trains passing by. A full Welsh breakfast or a healthier alternative is served in the restaurant located on the first floor. The waiters are very friendly and attentive. I really recommend this hotel.

    « Birthday stay »

Myself and my partner stayed here for one night in July. On arrival the reception staff were very welcoming and friendly, the room clean and well presented. Every member of staff we came into contact with - housekeeping, reception, bar staff all very polite and had good knowledge of everything we asked. Overall a really good stay :)

« Perfect from check in to check out. »

Excellent friendly staff; very efficient and helpful. Gorgeous room; everything you could ask for. Lovely dinner in the restaurant and fab breakfast. And right next to the train station and city centre too.

    « Great stay »

We loved our stay at Clayton hotel. The food in the restaurant is really good. The bar is really well set up. The staff were amazing and put up with our large group socialising in the bar area. We got to know a number of the staff during our stay. Very hospitable and we really felt welcome. Wish there was a bar fridge in the rooms.

« good value, great space, superb location »

right by Cardiff Central Station, spacious rooms, good modern minimalist decor, clean, good service. I spent one night and had a fab sleep. I am definitely coming back. would recommend for both short and long-er stays.

« Good location; good hotel »

I stayed with my mum for two nights. The hotel is walking distance from Cardiff Central station and is close to shops, bars, cafes and you could walk to Cardiff Castle. It has accessible rooms with walk in shower (required for mum), which was good and they were accommodating in placing us next to each other, which was appreciated. The staff were friendly and attentive. The breakfast had a good selection, was fresh and plentiful. We ate in house for dinner one night and the food was delicious and fresh. The rooms are modern, simple and clean. The bed is comfortable, but the pillows have seen better days and were inconsistent and not great. The bathrooms were clean with some basic toiletries (including shower cap) provided - but no conditioner, sanitary bags or body lotion. There's a safe in the room, but no complimentary water. We had laundry done as we're in the middle of a long journey and this was returned same day and to a high standard. Overall, it is a good spot for a short stay, with few surprises and represents good value for money. It's location is a bonus, as it provides lots of options.

    « Lovely Stay »

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is always very fresh with plenty of choice. The hotel itself is in the perfect location, beside the Train Station and St David's Shopping Centre. Plenty of places to eat and drink around it. We stay there every time we visit Cardiff. Highly recommended

« Excellent hotel for 2 night stay »

Excellent hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had breakfast and afternoon tea and both were of a good standard. The room was very nice and clean and it was the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on. Even though it is close to the train station and our room overlooked the track we were not disturbed at all by the negligible sound of trains. It was nice to have an ice machine in the corridor,my only suggestion for room improvement would be an ice bucket to hold the ice and maybe biscuits on the hospitality tray. We will definitely stay here again.

« Next to the railway station »

Situated right next door to Cardiff Central railway station, this hotel is well placed to serve travelers having business in Cardiff City or elsewhere in the Valleys. It's none too distant from Cardiff Bay and to the City's sporting venues and so is convenient for visitors with entertainment in mind. Book early if your visit is to - or coincides with - an event at the Millennium Stadium - you will be sure to find a very full City with hotel beds at a premium!

« Great Place to Stay »

Spent the weekend with some friends and found it an excellent venue for visiting Cardiff. The staff were excellent the rooms clean and very comfortable. Only had Breakfast here but that was again excellent and the Restaurant Staff were very good and helpful. The location is a plus so close to everything and no need for Taxis or Buses. Will be back.

    « A Great Location »

I haven't returned to this hotel since the change in ownership. The hotel is ideally located near the train station, right in the city centre. There is no hotel car parking although there is a NCP nearby which the hotel has a discount arrangement. Details on hotel website. Check in was very friendly and efficient. The hotel has been refurbished to a very good standard. My room was very clean, had all the amenities required and great to have an iron and ironing board. The bar and restaurant area on the first floor was really good too with some window seats having an excellent view of The Hayes. We had afternoon tea here which was very good value for money. The trainee Spanish Manager was lovely. Breakfast is served here too which was very good. Overall excellent stay here.

« Ok hotel, good location »

Hotel was ok, only 2 lifts so had to wait long times during peak periods. Restaurant was a little small for amount of people. Very good location for millennium stadium and main shopping areas. Rooms were a little cramped and not at a standard you would expect from similar chains

    « Great Stay »

Fantastic location for our stay. The hotel is a stones throw from the rail station and close to everything. Staff are brilliant, hotel is modern, rooms are clean and tidy. And the room price was fantastic.

« great hotel, friendly staff, awesome location »

My wife and I stayed here last night 18/08/2016. we have stayed here previously but this was by far the best room we have had. The views were amazing and the room itself was great, the room came with a mini fridge with two free bottles of water, a hairdryer, even an iron for the wife lol. they even threw in two shortbread biscuits. The pillows were not great but we managed. overall the staff are very friendly which is the most important. the breakfast was great the only thing i will say is that the beans were cold and we had to wait ten minutes for two fried eggs. free wifi also, and less than five minute walk from cardiff central train station.

    « Excellent third visit »

It is difficult to elaborate on the service we have always received at the Clayton Hotel. We always enjoy the experience and have no critiismsm to offer. We will return again when we need a further couple of days break. I recommend this hotel as first class in every way

« Great for business stays »

Located in the city center, walking distance to parking garage, train station, restaurants, shopping etc. so you are at the right spot. The room is fairly big and with all facilities you need. Also well maintained. A good gym with what you need. Super nice staff. Highly recommended.

« Weekend with old friends. »

The hotel is close to the railway station, excellent location in wonderful Cardiff. The room was adequate for three of us for two days. It would have been a bit small for a longer stay but was spotlessly clean, with plenty of tea, coffee and toiletries. The beds were wonderfully comfortable and the breakfast was plentiful and very tasty. All the staff members were extremely pleasant and helpful. I would recommend the Clayton.

    3
« Bad organization, not really clean, no parking »

I spent only 2 nights with my family in this Hotel, we needed a nice place to stay to have some rests. Our roadtrip starts in London few weeks ago and it will finish the august 31st in Scotland. At Clayton's we don't feel really comfortable: the coverbed of my daughters bed was really dirty and there was no parking in the Hotel. We need to park our car in a garage parking close to and pay extra £££. Bad organization at the restaurant for breakfast and at the moment of check out: they didn't give us any receipt, we need to ask for it. It was not a nice stay...I'm sorry for that!

    3
« Pretty standard fare - no muss, no fuss »

Stayed for one night on an organized tour with my family. This hotel was clean and comfortable. Nothing snazzy about this place. The location was nice, however, right in the center of town and practically adjacent to the train station.

    5
    « Excellent location »

You could not get a better location than the clayton! directly opposite the main strip and shops. A 2 min walk from the train station and the St David's centre. Staff are lovely, check in is always easy! and check out isn't until 12pm. I've lost count of the amount of times I've stayed here, wouldn't stay anywhere else now. Lovely bar and restaurant upstairs, safe, iron and ironing board in room, bedding and towels changed regularly. Lovely clean rooms, big comfy beds, room service used to be available although I'm not sure if it still is.

    5
« Excellent location and good price »

This was the first time that we had stayed at the Clayton, but it won't be the last. As the hotel is relatively newly built it was very modern and clean, but also very functional. We were attending an event at the Motorpoint arena for the weekend, so the location of the hotel in the centre of Cardiff is excellent. It's also very close to the train station if you are using that method of transport. The room we stayed in (704) was a good size with nice views over the city. The air con worked well as it was a quite a warm weekend, so nice to be cooled down when back at our room. The breakfast was excellent, with all the food being very warm and tasty. Definitely worth trying this out if your staying in Cardiff.

    « Secret Escapes Break »

We booked up and stayed one night using the secret escapes website. The hotel is within easy walking distance from the city centre, the Castle and Cardiff Bay. our room overlooked the railway tracks but we didn't get any real disturbing noise from the trains. We had afternoon tea and a cocktail upon arrival. when going into our room we were given a family room with a double and single bed, this made the room very cramped so were located to another room with a double bed and more space. The staff were very friendly and helpful. nothing was too much trouble & the girls on reception were real characters. enjoying their work and welcoming travellers. This hotel is well worth staying at and the location is perfect for sopping or sightseeing. Breakfast was good and we would defiantly stay here again.

    5
« Great hotel and location. »

I've stayed in most of Cardiff's hotels. The Clayton is by far the best mix of quality and location. Modern decor, modern rooms, great views and less than 7 minutes walk from the train platform to reception. The only down side is a lack of gym and the lifts that seem to take an age to deal with the morning check out rush. I'd recommend the Clayton for the business traveller or the city breaker.

    4
« Excellent choice in Cardiff »

I selected this hotel because of its proximity to Cardiff Central station. I stayed one night en route to northern Wales. I very nearly missed finding the hotel because it is so close to the station! Cardiff is a compact city and from my bedroom window I could identify Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Arms Park ( Millennium Stadium) , St David Cathedral........all little more than a 5 minute walk. I also walked to Cardiff Bay .....about 2 Kms. The hotel rooms are very comfortable, the staff are charming and the service is good. I'd definitely recommend this hotel and happily stay here again. The attached pic was taken from my room looking up towards St Mary Street and the castle.

    4
« Great location for Cardiff! The noise is not bad even though it's by the station. »

The room was very nice and we were pleased with how modern it was! The staff were very helpful and kind. You could hear the trains but not nearly as loud as we thought it would be. You could also hear people banging around the rooms next to you, but very softly. The hotel is located at St. Mary's Street. The street by it went straight to the Cardiff Castle and had lots of fun little places to eat. I would recommend this hotel to everyone visiting Cardiff for a few days!

« Easy access to city centre and bay area. »

Very convenient City centre location, close to both a railway station and secure parking. The hotel staff were very helpful. The bedrooms were clean but no more than functional, and we found the double bed a little on the small side a pleased only to be staying for just the one night. The hotel's bar and restaurant Facilities are very good, and inexpensive, as is the treat of afternoon tea.

    4
« Comfortable stay in a central location »

Very conveniently located in downtown Cardiff so close to the Central Station and the shopping complexes, the hotel room was highly comfortable and clean. General ambience of the hotel was very good and the staff were always helpful. Breakfast was fresh with wide-ranging choices and the view of the city centre from the restaurant windows was an added attraction. Complementary newspapers were available for the breakfast table. The restaurant / bar area also had a small collection of books that one can borrow to read and relax. On the whole I had a relaxing experience at the hotel. The fact was it was so conveniently located at the city centre close to the restaurants and other facilities was very helpful to me.

« Great hotel with fantastic staff »

This hotel is modern clean and comfortable. It has great views of Cardiff from the bedrooms and the restaurants. The staff are very friendly professional and attentive. Nutica is always smiling helpful and provides an excellent customer experience! The food is delicious and all appears freshly made. A very good hotel in a fantastic location.

Great Hotel in a wonderful position right next door to the Shops and Train Station. Room clean and comfortable. Slight negative was the heating control which was complicated....instructions were buried in the small print of the rules and regs.

« Red smears on the walls in and around the bathroom in 806 »

Check in staff lovely and breakfast was good. Paid £20.00 extra to stay in room 806 which has fantastic views down St Mary's street, took my stuff to the room, started to unpack, then noticed the red smears on the wall in the bathroom and by bathroom door (blood??). Went to reception and they changed my room to 1101. Checked that room thoroughly for any bodily fluid residue (couldn't find any, luckily). Was meant to be meeting my husband (as the hotel stay, meal and cinema were a birthday treat for him) for a meal, but still felt queasy from seeing all the blood (I get ill at the sight of blood). Didn't enjoy my night at all. Can understand a cleaner missing a tiny spot, but not big smears. Would not recommend the hotel unfortunately.

    5
    « Great Experience »

Returning to Cardiff after some months gap I was greeted by name as soon as I entered the reception. A Christmas card hand signed by members of staff and a gift were put in my room. Nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff here and I always enjoy staying here.

    « A VERY NICE HOTEL »

great staff, all made us very welcome on a rainy day in cardiff. would recommend this hotel for its position in the city and the quality and high standard shown during our stay. easy access from the train station, car parking was £9.00 for 24hrs. paid for at reception, bargain. room 922 had a nice view of st mary street all lit up with xmas lights.

« Loved it, loved it, loved it. »

As you may have guessed we enjoyed our stay here, hotel staff were ace, room was very clean and tidy, and the hotel was in a great location, next toothed train station and very close to all the shops and bars. We had a great weekend and will be doing the same again next year!!

    « Concert Stay »

Chose this hotel primarily because it is a BW, but because of its proximity to the Motorpoint Arena for a concert we were seeing. Awkward to find, but very pleased once there. Clean, friendly, food was of a good to very good standard. Would happily stay again, especially as I could find it now. Head for Cardiff Central station!!

    5
« Great location and friendly staff »

This was the second time I stayed here, and I must admit one of my favourite hotels in Cardiff. The location to the train station is perfect, only a 5 min walk away and its right next to the shopping centre as well. The staff are friendly and informative (Thank you Jennifer) and as for the room itself, well laid out, clean and tidy.

« Good hotel in the center area »

It is a modern hotel with well sized rooms and useful small gym. The breakfast is pretty good with different options ( typical British and also some other continental options ). Wifi included. It's next to the center and shopping area of Cardiff with plenty of bar and restaurants.

    « CLAYTON HOTEL- BRILLIANT »

We had a one night stay B&B at the Clayton booked via a Living Social offer. A professional and very warm check in experience. Thanks Jose. We received an upgrade to the top floor. A very well appointed room. Wonderful robes and slippers. Stunning views of the city. Our room was spotlessly clean with a really comfortable bed and good fittings. The bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water. The location of the hotel is great. Ideal for city centre exploration. Breakfast was very pleasing, hot and cold buffet. Both well stocked. Self service throughout. The restaurant gave good views out into the city. A really enjoyable stay and excellent value. A big thanks to all the staff from all the departments. Happy Holiday

« Well appointed, centrally located hotel »

The Clayton Hotel is immediately across the street from the train station, and thus could not possibly be more convenient if you are arriving into town by train. And that was the reason for our choice to stay there. We were pleasantly surprised by the good service and hospitality we were greeted with, and with the clean and well equipped room.

« Clayton Hotel Cardiff - great location »

Short trip to Cardiff and needed an hotel close to Cardiff Central Railway station - Clayton less than 5mins walk.On arrival at reception was greeted by a very friendly and welcoming receptionist.During check in she asked if I needed any local info and wished me a pleasant stay. Booked a King room and having read other Trip Advisor reviews had asked for a room on higher floor. Very pleased, given top floor room on corner of building, amazing views over the city. Very spacious room, and bathroom, excellent furnishings and extremely comfy bed and super-soft bathrobes. Wasn't disturbed by any traffic or railway noise. Checkout was smooth and hotel happy to store luggage till I needed to collect it. Would definitely stay there again - close to railway and city centre. One tiny minus....the table was a bit overloaded with large tv, alarm clock, coffee machine, teatray and kettle !!!!!

    « Central location »

The hotel is very centrally located, a short stroll from the train station and very close to all amenities. That does mean that there is some noise from the trains at times. We had booked two rooms, one was quiet as requested, the other overlooked the railway line, so had the rattle of trains some of the time. Rooms were comfortable and functional. Food was generally good. It was only on the final day that I realised freshly cooked eggs and mushrooms were available to order. The breakfast buffet had a good range of cold selections. The hot food was not as hot as I would have liked, particularly the scrambled eggs, which were luke warm. Plates at both breakfast and evening meal were cold, which doesn't help. The evening set menu 2 or 3 courses (£15 and £18) were of a good standard. Not a massive amount of food, but very well presented and tasty. There was free wifi in all rooms and a small gym. Staff were very helpful, which made the stay very pleasant.

« two night stay in great central location »

Stayed two nights at this modern hotel next to the station it is conveniently located for all Cardiff centre Friendly helpful staff Clean modern rooms A great stay worth a visit if visiting cardiff The breakfast had a good choice and the best fried eggs i have had in a hotel for a long time there are plenty of restaurants and pubs near the hotel and the railway station is right next to the hotel

« Changed the name but not the quality - is still high »

It was great to be back at the Clayton Hotel Cardiff, but sadly only for one night this time. A warm welcome, comfortable and clean as always. Great food too. The corridors from the lift are all quiet areas, which is good.

    « Mostly good »

This hotel is conveniently located, being almost next to the train station and very close to the main shopping and restaurant area. In general my room was comfortable with good lighting levels, but the lighting level in the bathroom was very poor. The bed linen was of a good standard, there was adequate clothes hanging space, but insufficient drawer space. A minor quibble is the size of the water glasses - far too small if you like a glass of water beside your bed at night. My major criticism of this hotel would be with regard to the breakfast. There was a good range of items available on the breakfast buffet (and eggs cooked to order were available), but on the first two mornings I was there the ?hot' buffet food was cold. On the third (and I went to breakfast later that morning) there was not the same problem. Finally on each morning I stayed, only one of the two lifts was working as I tried to leave the hotel, which led to congestion and significant delays for guests on the higher floors.

    « Well worth a visit »

Stayed for 1 night 30th nov to see a show in st davids center Hotel just by the railway station lovely pleasant staff and very helpfull lovely clean room with a fantastic view over the city. Breakfast was well worth the money plenty of selection and hot My only gripe was that we could not get a drink at the bar after 11o'clock i was under the impresion that being a resident you could get a drink after that i have stayed in many hotels in cardiff and have never been refused a drink after 11oclock they just charged it to your room

« No longer called the Maldron but no signs about change »

First impressions were not good - it took me 30 minutes in the pouring rain to find the hotel because they have changed the name but not put up any signs. I eventually got there but the receptionist intially did not apologise and claimed there was a sign until I asked her to show me it - then she acknowledged there wasn't one. She said that she had told her manager but they never got back to me. Apparently the name change is a 'rebranding' because it is now a 4-star hotel. It really isn't. No robe for the bathroom or nice bathroom products. No herbal teas, hot chocolate or proper coffee. Standard decor, standard breakfast. Can't open the windows. In the morning I was woken by people in the room next door, soundproofing obviously not great either. I won't go back next time I am in Cardiff. To be fair, the good points: close to the station (but so are lot of other hotels), decent hairdryer provided, iron in room, comfortable bed, newspaper with breakfast.

« Stay at the Clayton Hotel »

Just had a three night stay at the Clayton Hotel and would recommend it to anyone wishing to see the sights and facilities of Cardiff. Perfect location for shops, restaurants and bars. also close to the Millenium Stadium for rugby supporters and close to cinemas and theaters. Just a short bus ride to Cardiff Bay with all its restarants and the Millenium Center.

    « Great position »

Have recently returned from staying here for a week on business. The hotel is in a very good position right in the middle of the town & next to the railway station, easy reach if by road or rail. If travelling by road be warned the hotel does not have its own carparking facilities but does have a deal with a local Ncp multistorey that you can park there for the reduced rate of £9.00 for 24 hrs, the hotel validates the ticket for you at reception. I had a room on the 6th floor (11 altogether) although i was nxt the lift's i never heard them thats always a plus. I was put in a disabled room which was fine, my only gripe was that it had an automatic door which took forever to close. Also the hair dryer is placed in the only draw in the room & the lead is fed through the back of the draw which you cant take out, if the lead had been longer it wouldnt have been too bad, but it is quite short which resulted in me sitting on the floor to dry my hair & not being able to see in the mirror. Moan over. As for the rest of the hotel it was lovely, staff couldnt do enough for you & would go out of there way to help you. Although I was b & b I ordered room service one evening which was lovely but be warned there is a £5.00 tray charge. My overall stay was great & yes I defiantley would stay here again.

    « Good value »

Stayed for one night to enjoy a concert at the Motorpoint. The hotel is superbly placed for the train station and not far to walk to the Motorpoint arena. There is plenty of eating establishments around the hotel, you are so close to the town it makes this location ideal for shopping, nightlife and exploring Cardiff. I found the rooms adequate for sleeping in, the staff were really helpful and friendly and being able to leave bags in the luggage room when you checked out meant you can explore the city for the day before heading home - bonus.

    « Good for Whovians »

We had travelled to Cardiff to visit the Doctor Who Experience. We had booked two nights in this hotel, and on our arrival we got seen at reception very quickly. I requested a top floor room, but they only had rooms on floor 5 available. I had not requested this in advance, so it was not a problem. The room was really clean, and ultra modern. We had a TV which worked, two separate beds, and a bathroom with bath and shower. The views from the room were good, with Millennium stadium and the city centre visible. Breakfast was not included in the cost of our stay, I asked how much it would cost, and I was quoted £10 for a breakfast or £7 for a continental breakfast. I thought that was very expensive, so we went to the bar over the road for breakfast instead. We never tried the bar of restaurant. The location is great. Right in the centre of Cardiff, next to the central railway station, and the main shopping areas. There is also a frequent but that goes to the bay area. The airport bus also departs from nearby. I would recommend this hotel.

    « Clean and relaxing »

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with my girlfriend and overall our room was clean and spacious. Only problem we had was that our hearing didn't work, the manager offered us another room or a heater, so we took the heater. That let it down a little but overall it was nice.

    « Clayton Hotel, Cardiff »

Excellent hotel, very pleasant and helpful staff. Excellent variety for breakfast: full english/continental/dairy free etc. all needs catered for. Lovely food and reasonable prices in restaurant. Only drawback was a badly installed lead on hair dryer making it too short to use properly. Having pointed this out I am sure it will be dealt with. Adjoining doors allow for noise from next room(snoring) to carry through. Although I didn't hear it, my husband did! The most helpful service provided was the provision of safekeeping of our luggage "after" booking out, until whatever time we needed, as our train was not until after 9.00 at night. Very pleased with our stay.

« nice hotel, great location »

stayed at this hotel overnight and the staff were nice the room was clean and tidy with a great view over the city ( 6th floor) bed was comfy and unlike other hotels i have stayed in this one was the quietest through the night. The bar area and restaurant were nice and relaxing and the breakfast was great, only complaint i had was the food menu wasn't that varied really but the food i did have was very nice, i will definitely go again.

Just a quick review to say that the name may have changed but the service and friendliness is still there. Clean spotless rooms excellent food and of course Penderyn Whisky. The perfect "chill out " break. Thank you.

    « Excellent location »

This hotel is great for a weekend in Cardiff as its five minutes walk from the train station and slap bang in the centre The rooms are comfortable but a bit small, but very clean and the breakfast was good It was good to know you had to be ticked off a list at night, by a security guard , so no riff raff can get in Would have got a "very good " if a bit cheaper

    « So relaxed »

Have stayed here 3 times now and I have to say it's a gem of a hotel. If you travel by train u only have a 2 min walk to hotel. Easy sign in. Out in main Cardiff streets in another 5 mins inclusive of unpacking, and your away. The hotel is so relaxed, the staff are superb. Mark the head barman was really good at his job and very friendly. Needed a spare towel, phoned reception. Towels arrived within 3 mins. Superb service. My one quibble would be I didn't like the soap dispensers on the wall, because I love a soak in the bath and basically you have to get up from the bath to use them as they are out of reach. A minor moan but something that maybe could be looked at in future. I will definitely return again and I'm very much looking forward to doing so.

« Not as good as previously. »

We had stayed at the Maldron Hotel several times and were told at reception that the Clayton brand was a 4 star hotel. We did not see any obvious changes and certainly the standard was poorer than previously. The rooms were cold and the breakfast was luke warm at best. In fairness the staff were excellent. I doubt if we will return with so many other hotels so close by.

    « Birthday Weekend Cardiff »

Hotel is on the junction of St Mary Street and Mill Parade which is a few minutes walk from the train station. Not so sure if it's location is ideal for those arriving by car as no drop off point outside the hotel, though there are plenty of car parks nearby. It's location makes it ideal for those looking to party the night away with the City's main pubs and clubs on the door step. Rooms are well appointed with a comfortable bed although the bathroom was a bit small. Breakfast was excellent with a good selection of hot and cold selection, very good fried breakfast.

« Lovely modern hotel where nothing is too much trouble »

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in November. We were exhibiting at a fair and needed somewhere really central with all the mod cons. It's not always easy to find exactly what one is searching for by the Internet, but this hotel certainly filled the bill. The only drawback was finding the hotel by car which was not easy but it was not enough of a drawback to make me want to remove a star. No hotel parking either but there's an ncp just across the road. The restaurant is good. The breakfast is quite outstanding! The room was on the 10th floor overlooking the railways but everything this double glazed so noise was no problem. There is a good selection of teas and infusions in the room. There is a personal safe in the room. Free WiFi works very well, as do the phone networks. The air con is easy to switch off if you want to. The windows in the room go right down to the floor which is fun. 3 mins walk to Central station 5 mins walk to the Millennium stadium The main shopping street is just across the road and leads to the Castle which is just 10 mins walk. Unbeatable for the prices which are quite moderate. Will return next year.

« Very good with our Secret Escapes Deal »

We came here because we got an amazing secret escapes deal - Afternoon tea for two, two cocktails, Full English Breakfast and a double room for the night, all for £80!! This deal was phenomenal. The bed was very comfortable, so close to the station which was perfect for us, and it was nice and quiet. However, it is rather basic. The food was not good at all, we ordered room service and had two pannis for £25, they were cold, salad was soggy and not properly cooked. I barely ate half my panni because I couldn't stand having cold cheese and bread!! Having specially asked for ketchup it was forgotten, and we asked from Reception for a toothbrush as I had forgotten mine - the person we spoke to must have forgotten as 20 minutes later we phoned back, and eventually got the toothbrush 30 minutes later which is a long time just for a tooth brush!! In terms of service, the barman who served us afternoon tea and our drinks both day and night were superb, both so friendly and seemed to genuinely care. Very nice!! Unfortunately I was very ill in the morning after and was very sick, we were going to wonder around Cardiff but I was too ill to move so I was going to get the train home 40 minutes after check out. My boyfriend politely phoned reception and explained the situation to see if we could stay in the room for an extra 30/40 minutes so I didn't have to wait around for my train as I was so ill, but there was no sympathy or sense of hospitality - we either had to pay £10/20 (can't remember which) to stay that extra bit longer or we weren't allowed to stay. For that amount of money it was ridiculous for an extra 30 minutes so we left. Bit of a cold way to leave but hey ho.. So overall great bar staff, great beds, nice and quiet, and fantastic deal - but really not good food (eat out!!!), and not much communication or hospitality feel to some of the receptionists.

« New name still a great hotel »

Stayed here for one night between working 12 hour shift n Cardiff. I have stayed at the hotel a number of times when it was the Maldron. The name might have changed but the great staff and standards are just as good. Room was good with plenty of space and a very comfy. The bathroom has a very good shower and plenty of hot water. Looking forward to my next stay.

« Does not qualify as a Hotel »

For me any hotel should provide, food, shelter and access. This building offers good food, comfortable rooms but is desperately difficult to get into by car. Firstly there are problems with the post code, the code supplied was rejected by my sat nav, and as I was checking in, it was rejected by another system, as reported by another frustrated driver. The substitute post code offer by the reception staff took me to a point about 200 yards away but the wrong side of the train tracks. Finally having found the building, there is no drop off point, in fact the nearest legal parking spot is more than 200 yards away. The immediate area is either a bus lane or double yellow lines. And yet there is a suitable little road, but it is sealed off and inaccessible to everyone.

    4
    « Close to station »

The hotel was close to the station (5 minute walk). There was a good restaurant for breakfast and dinner Facilities in the room were good including tea making facilities Ideal venue if you wish to visit the Millennium stadium for rugby and other events

    « Christmas shopping trip »

Just arrived home from a busy weekend of Christmas shopping. Myself and 7 other members of my family stayed at the Clayton hotel for a one nights stay. I have mixed feelings of this hotel. On the plus side it's located in an excellent spot. It's a 2 minute walk from the train station and a 2 minute walk into the centre. The hotel is very clean and modern. Our rooms were comfortable but sadly our air conditioning /heating wasn't working. The room was freezing. In the hotels defence we didn't report it because we were not in the room long enough to worry about it so I can't comment on how the hotel would have dealt with the problem. We had booked ahead a meal for the Saturday night in the hotels restaurant. When we arrived at the restaurant it was obvious that they didn't have our booking because we were taken to a table that was set up ready for breakfast. We had to move the two tables together ourselves and keep asking for cutlery because they didn't lay it up! Wrong drinks were brought to us and the staff just generally seemed inexperienced. The food was good all be it small potions. The staff on the front desk were polite but not particularly friendly. The only reason I would return would only be because of its convience of where it is.

« Change of name from Maldron and continues to impress »

My wife and I's third annual visit in mid November. Very enjoyable two night stay courtesy of 'Secret Escapes'. Very efficient check-in and check-out. Bedroom on 10th floor but still heard the occasional train during the night due to the close proximity of the rail line serving the nearby Cardiff Central Railway Station. We accept this but the bonus is the very central location for the city centre. Very comprehensive buffet breakfast. We travelled from the north-west by train to Cardiff. The hotel has an arrangement with a multi storey car park a short distance away for those who arrive by car.

    « Shopping weekend »

The hotel is very well positioned right next to Cardiff station and walking distance to the city centre. The hotels is clean and modern. We decided to book ahead for the eight of us to have a meal on the Saturday night at the hotel to save us searching around Cardiff. When we arrived at the restaurant they didn't have a table set up for us ready so we were ushered to two tables of four which we pushed together. The table seemed to be laid ready for breakfast the next morning. Our waiter came and cleared away the cutlery and paper napkins and we thought great they are laying the table for diner. This didn't happen and we then had to ask for cutlery and napkins which they brought. No nice linen ones like everyone else just the bog standard paper ones like the ones that were collected earlier!!!! The waiters were not exactly amicable or attentive. Sorry guys the tip we were going to leave to you we spent on charity raffle tickets instead. Would stay here again but will book a meal elsewhere.

« Felt like our home from home again!!!! Fabulous. »

We have stayed here previously and of course returned because we like it so much. I emailed previous to our stay of three nights and asked if we could have our favourite room - which they accommodated with no problem. Our room as usual had everything we wanted - bath with shower over (my husband really enjoyed the bath as we have a shower at home). Spacious room with TV, wardrobe space, drawers, iron & board, safe, large bed etc. Being previous guests we were remembered by Linda (Manager) - which was very nice. This hotel is highly recommended by us.

    « 3 night stay »

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights room only we did not eat at the hotel. We had a disabled double room on the 8th floor. Check in was swift and professional. We found all the staff to be extremely helpful and pleasant. The lady who made up the room was was excellent. The room was spotless and the tea/coffee always replenished. We did have a drink in the bar which was expensive but pleasant. The location is excellent as really close to the train station. I would recommend this hotel.

« Excellent location, clean and tidy »

Hotel did everything that you need it to do, with one small exception... Booked a standard room and requested high floor with nice view. Got a 7th floor room with view to the millennium stadium. Room very clean, we had a cot in the room and had asked for a fridge too. Still plenty of space. The fridge actually didn't work, but on raising with reception, they stored our baby food and milk in a fridge in the kitchen and every time we asked for it, the food or milk was delivered to our room within a couple of minutes. Staff always polite, couldn't do enough for you. Shower was amazing, enthusiasts of hot water at good pressure. Tea and coffee in the room, always a good thing!! Now that one thing I mentioned... There was no shaver power point anywhere in the room. Not a big issue but that's as bad as it gets... The weather was terrible, but can't blame that on the hotel. But when the wind blew hard, at night, there was banging going on somewhere in the hotel where something wasn't secure. Mentioned it on departure and I am sure it will be sorted easily. No parking on site, but NCP car park is about 200 yards away, hotel will authorise your ticket at a rate of £9 per 24 hours. The posted rate at the car park is over £20 for 24 hours. Excellent location for city centre, millennium stadium or train station. Will definitely stay here again.

This hotel is clean, comfortable, in a good positionfor centre of town and access to station and taxi's, friendly and helpful staff. I have stayed here many times and will continue to use it in the future. reasonable rates. Restaurant is clean and breakfast is excellant.

    « Restaurant »

It was the juxtaposition of one of those pretentious wire baskets and the use of mccains finest that raised my hackles. Suitable at Wetherspoons, but not when paying this much. I don't mind a side salad, but can you tell me in advance, so I can request that it is without dressing. Most people like salt on chips, I don't. Presalting them denied me the chance to choose for myself

    « Great stay! »

I've stayed here quite a lot over the past 2 weeks with work. The hotel is in a great location, not even 5 minutes walk from the train station or city centre shopping. I found all staff to be friendly and helpful. Food was delicious, plenty of choice at breakfast. The portions of an evening were huge!! The menu did get a bit boring after a few nights too, but couldn't fault the quality of the food. The room was very comfortable, clean and everything needed was provided. The hotel is very quiet and I had better sleep than I do at home! Overall I couldn't fault a thing and I would definitely stay here again for work or leisure!!

    « Great Stay »

We stayed 6 nights here over our 70th birthdays a few days back. The staff at this hotel proved to be utterly useless--------- at controlling the weather. The rain poured and the wind howled for several days. Inside the hotel we were constantly warmed and cheered by the friendliness and helpfulness of all members of staff from reception to dining room and housekeeping. (Sorry if I've missed anyone, but you were all great). We always had a positive response to all our requests, which were dealt with efficiently and speedily. I've read some very critical reviews about some hotel employees here but we must have stayed in a different place. We found our room and all public rooms including the fitness suite to be very clean and well maintained The things that have stopped me giving 5 stars are not within the control of the hotel management. Our room overlooked the railway and most disturbance came from the night maintenance gangs rather than the trains. There are very busy roads at the front that take forever to cross into town and the night time revellers came be intimidating to some. The lack of a car park is inconvenient, but the public car parking fees of £9 per night are very reasonable. (We paid £22 per night when staying at the Cardiff H***** Hotel -- And had to pay extra for Wi Fi in the room) We will be coming back!!

I came to Cardiff for a conference in September for a week and was billeted here on the top floor with far reaching views of the city and beyond. The food was good with an extensive breakfast selection. Handy for city centre night life. Good clean central venue in walking distance of the rail station.

« Good location by station »

Stayed here for 3 nights midweek on my own, had booked with Secret Escapes and deal was a double room with dinner and cocktail on first night and hotel were fine about my friend who lives locally but wasn't staying, taking advantage of the dinner and cocktail deal. Very nice hotel, decent room overlooking railway but not noisy. Bath with shower, nice to have the choice. All staff friendly and helpful and good selection on buffet for breakfast. The dinner menu was typical of most large hotels, but this hotel is right by Cardiff Central station and also very close to lots of restaurants and also situated next to a Brazilian restaurant, Viva Brazil,( if you haven't tried one already, you really should) I would be happy to stay at the Clayton again on my next visit to this wonderful city.

    « Very nice hotel »

We stayed here while on a bus tour of Great Britain. Nice, modern hotel. The breakfast was complete with everything we could ask for. Bed was very comfy and the room was large. Ours didn't have a view but we were so tired we just wanted to sleep.

« Lovely hotel in a good location »

Excellent central location, 2 minutes walk from Central station and 2 minutes walk from main shopping area. Hotel room was very clean, as was the en-suite. Comfortable bed, plenty of tea & coffee supplies, all contributing to a very pleasant stay. Good buffet breakfast, plenty of choice. Given the hotel's location in the capital of Wales, it would have been nice to have a bottle of Welsh mineral water instead of the Harrogate water provided. I shall definitely return.

    « Great location...if you're on foot »

Stayed here for one night whilst attending a business meeting. The location is great - a stone's throw from Cardiff Central station and the bars/restaurants of St Mary's St and The Hayes. I was, however, travelling by car with colleagues and there is limited stopping space outside the hotel. This made drop-offs with luggage a little frantic. The hotel does offer a discounted rate of £9 for parking at the NCP on Wood St - a good rate, but be warned that the spaces are incredulously tight. Once inside the hotel, the decor is modern and the interiors are kept clean. Check in was straightforward although the staff did not seem interested in interacting with guests, only completing the task at hand. My room was spacious and well laid out. If you are a light sleeper, you might want to ask for a room which doesn't overlook the railway line. Breakfast in the first floor restaurant was plentiful and well prepared.

« Great Hotel, good value in great Location »

Stayed for one night while in Cardiff on Business. Hotel was In a great location in the centre of Cardiff. Checkin took seconds not sure if this because the office had checked me in already. Room was very nice and reasonably spacious for a City Centre Location and the bed was pretty comfortable. Breakfast was varied and very nice. Didn't use the Bar or Gym facilities so cant comment on those. Would definently stay again If i'm in the area.

    « Lovely »

The room was lovely and hotel in a great location. We had no view from our room but we were too busy in the city to care. This area is shopping, food, pedestrian friendly and many of the clubs/bars are open late if that is your scene...and yet the hotel area is quiet. The surrounding area around the hotel is very clean though the ncp garage to park your car looks a bit sketchy we had no problems otherwise. I would definitely recommend this.

    4
    « Location, Location, Location »

Very central to CBD. Room was clean and tidy, and just comfortable in size. Only problem there was no onsite carparking which proved to be quite costly. The NCP close by has undercover parking bays suitable for a scooter rather than for a small car. How our hire car survived without a dint was a miracle.

    5
    « Warm welcome »

Excellent stay at this hotel. Location is excellent. The 1st floor restaurant/breakfast room is a tranquility above and away from the busy street below. Room very clean, tidy and well spaced. Nothing was too much to ask. Will definetly return.

    « Disappointed »

I booked this hotel as a treat to myself and my daughter instead of using the run of the mill Premier Inns. All the city centre hotels were pricey for the weekend including Premier Inn so I thought I would push the boat out a little and stay in a quality hotel. The location is great, right next to the station and a short stroll to everything in the city, but so are many other hotels. It was modern and clean. The bed was comfortable, the shower was good. But all I could see extra in the room that you don't get in a budget hotel was an iron and a safe. There was also a gym within the hotel. We only met three members of staff. One was the receptionist who checked us in. She wasn't particularly friendly or welcoming, pretty robotic to be honest. Another was the chap who checked us into breakfast. He just took our room number and basically said help yourself and sit where you want. I have received much better and more welcoming service in a Premier Inn. The breakfast was below average, with very cheap mushy sausages, bacon like leather and the scrambled egg was very undercooked. Finally when we checked out, the receptionist was again very robotic with no smiles, and didn't bother to ask how our stay was. The hotel itself is lovely but the staff need to learn to be more welcoming. If you are just looking for a comfy bed and clean modern surroundings I would suggest just booking a Premier Inn or Travelodge as both are within easy walking distance of the city. Sorry Clayton Hotel but I feel very ripped off! Other than that had a fabulous weekend in Cardiff.

« Clean, modern hotel in great location »

We loved this hotel. Easy check in. Clean, modern and spacious. We were a little worried about the noise as it was so close to the train station but we didn't hear a thing all night, bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was clean and spacious. Is location is great...close to the train station and within walking distance to the shops and landmarks.. We parked at Wood Street multistorey car park and when you check out you pay £9 at the reception with your ticket. The only trouble we had was finding the car park but the lady on the phone was dry helpful in directing us and even offered to come out and direct us. We would not hesitate in staying here again.

« New name but same good quality »

The Hotel is situated close to Cardiff station at the bottom of St Mary street in the heart of Cardiff. Reception was friendly and efficient, the room spacious, comfortable and clean. The breakfast choice was varied and plentiful. Ideal location (without a car).

« Good value, good location, clean and comfortable »

Right by the Central station and very close to main stadium and arena venues. Very clean. Comfortable bed. Good size standard room. My room had a small window with no real view. Room was too hoy - no in room control. Bathroom good size but shower head hard to angle so have to stand very near the taps! Rooms can be a very good price. Good bar in the hotel. Rates now seem to include breakfast - mine booked when it was the Maldron did not. Loads of eating and drinking places nearby. Despite the risk of it being in a noisy area it was very quiet. It was just right for my early morning train. would stay again.

    « Brilliant »

A very nice hotel. Very clean decor throughout. Extra large comfortable beds :-) control your own heating and air conditioner. Situated on each floor is an ice machine and ice cold water plus a fresh bottle of water in your room every day :-) plenty of hot drinks in each room :-) excellent linen and bath towel (crisp and WHITE). The restaurant is excellent, choice of two menus in the evening, reasonable prices. Steak is cooked to perfection plus a good selection of vegetarian options. Lots to choose from at breakfast, scrambled eggs as standard but you can request them cooked anyway you like:-) the only downfall (if you can call it one) is that mushrooms are not standard VUT again, you can order them :-) overall a very pleasant 3 weeks on business spent here and will definitely be returning :-)

« Our new favourite hotel in Cardiff »

Booked a night at the Clayton Hotel to visit our son who is at uni in Cardiff. I asked for a room on a high floor, hoping for a good view of the city. We were lucky to be able to check in an hour early and were very happy to be given a room on the 10th floor, with views across the train tracks and down towards Cardiff Bay. Train noise was barely noticeable. The room was very clean and well presented - bathroom the same, with a nice powerful shower. Drinks at the bar were reasonably priced for a city centre hotel. Breakfast was fabulous - plenty of choice and well worth the price. Free wifi was excellent. All the members of staff we encountered were cheerful and helpful, special mention for reception and breakfast staff. We will definitely be back soon.

« A touch of luxury in the city centre »

The rooms are generously sized and the wi-fi is free, fast, and Just Works - this is surprisingly hard to find even in supposed business hotels! I was only stopping by for one night and did not take advantage of many of the hotel's facilities, but its city centre location is unbeatable. The staff were polite and helpful, and I got a good night's sleep. The clever courtyard / light well in the middle of the building meant that even my room (525, which would not otherwise be ideally positioned) had a great view over the buildings of the city.

« Great deal in a great hotel with friendly staff »

Arrived late Friday, I had originally booked a double room through a deal as that was all that the deal had available, but as I was traveling with my son the friendly man at reception changed our room to a twin room. Very friendly staff throughout the hotel, lovely clean room, comfy bed and a nice breakfast. Had a great deal through Secret Escapes. The hotel is in a great spot right next to the station. The only negative was that our room was near the double doors by the lift, so we could hear the door being open and closed sometimes during the night by some guests who were not trying to be quiet. Free wi-fi.

    « Not Impressed »

Hotel next to main Cardiff train station handy except it went to bus replacement service for our return journey. We expected the bus leaving time would be the same as the train departure time but no it was 40mins earlier. If anyone finds themselves faced with a bus replacement service please check I wish we had. This was not the hotels fault but it would be nice to have the train station link up with any changes with reception as it is so close to the hotel and as they have no car park most customers will rely on the train service. Checked in for two nights. Reception was quick, efficient and friendly. The hotel looked recently redecorated, everything new and clean. The bedroom was cold but otherwise very nice. The room was booked for two guests but there was only one dressing gown no face cloth. As it was a superior room we expected a little more. We were on the 8th floor in a corner room with a dual aspect view of Cardiff. Breakfast was very basic with 2 staff on duty. Dinned in on the second night, people in the dining room but no staff in sight. We eventually were seated and our order taken. 40minutes later we had not seen anything to eat not even a bread role. We felt ignored.

    « Hash Brown Highlight »

Hotel is central to the shopping and nightlife. The staff were all lovely. rooms were clean and well presented. We even had a view from our tenth floor window. Parking was a five minute walk. Free WiFi was good. Two things that brought the experience down. 1- The bed seemed really small. 2-Breakfast looked the part on the buffet, but when you got into it the only nice hot stuff was the hash browns. I know it's only a tenner, but if you can't produce a decent, tasty breakfast for that, then charge more!

« Going that extra mile. »

I've been working in Cardiff quite a bit lately and the Clayton Hotel staff have been great. I've been staying here on and off since August and will finish towards the end of November and I really look forward to my stay each time. It's beautifully located next to the station, the shops and lots of restaurants.

« Location, location, location, just too hot! »

Stayed here for rugby weekend and you really could not get a better location. It is right in the heart of the action. Check in was seamless even though the hotel was fully booked, breakfast was very good, room is small though especially for the numbers (also finished at 10 on the sunday (but 11 on the saturday)). Room was a good size, well furnished with tea/coffee facilities and a safe, all you need really. The only downfall and it was huge as it made it quite uncomfortable was the heat in the room. We followed the steps to make it as cold as we could, called to reception who checked the master system and said it was set correctly. But it honestly felt so hot it was very uncomfortable. We couldn't change rooms due to being fully booked. I would love to revisit Cardiff on a non rugby weekend to experience it properly and the Clayton would be the perfect location to do that. But and its a big but, I would only do it if I was ensure a cooler room.

« Walking distance to high street, castle & stadium »

Good location. Walking distance to shopping area, Cardiff Castle & Millennium Stadium. Room was clean & comfortable. Downside was the hotel does not have its own parking. NCP parking is available across the street a short walk away. But if you're traveling with small children and have a few luggage, it would be a bit of a hassle.

« Convenient for station and city centre »

Close to station and city centre, room was spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. Had view over railway line but sound insulation was excellent so we weren't disturbed by the trains. The bar and restaurant looked good but we didn't use them as we were attending a family event.

    « business stay »

I stayed here late september for three days and was happy with the room and service. Parking is a problem and adds about 9 pounds a day to the stay. The one negative was that I needed to stay a fourth night to complete business. They immediately charged me the maximum rate- much more than the three previous nights which I felt was extortionate as I did not have the time to search for another hotel. For this reason I would not return.

    « Great location »

This hotel is within easy walking distance to the station, across the road from the Cardiff Airport Express Bus stop and at the end of St. Mary Street. We visited during the Rugby World Cup and it was good to be within walking distance to the shops, bars, restaurants and Millennium Stadium. Our room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The shower water pressure was amazing. The bathroom was small with a shower over the bath and not enough shelving to store toilet bags. The hair dryer was located in a desk drawer with a very short cord. Surprised to see a price list for every item in the room including the pricelist! In spite of the all night party in the streets outside we were not disturbed by any noise. The bar on the first floor had a good view down St. Mary Street and provided excellent service. Our only issue was that on checking out Reception was reluctant to provide an itemised account so that we could check our expenditure.

    3
« Close to the train station »

Modern and clean chain hotel. Staff were friendly. Breakfast buffet was of a good standard. This is 5 minutes walk from the station and 5 minutes from the shopping area. Try for a room that doesn't face the station as early trains can wake you.

    « A much needed break! »

Stayed on the 7th October for 2 nights. We booked this in January as we were attending a concert but after losing my father very suddenly in July, it was a welcome break from life. We asked for an upgrade to the Executive suite. Nice room but I didn't think it was worth the extra £20 a night. The only extra really is a Nespresso machine which was very much welcome in the early morning. Check in was great. We were in our room 2hrs earlier than the actual check-in time. Very impressed! Room was a bit too chilly for me but the receptionist sorted it out no problem. Very quiet hotel. At times we felt like we were the only ones there. Requested a rubber bath mat from reception and it was in our room waiting for us when we returned from the concert. Beautiful views from our room. Beds are lovely & comfy (a bit high for someone as short as me). The cleaning staff were all smiley & friendly which was a welcome sight first thing in the morning. Tea & coffee making facilities and bathroom supplies were topped up daily. Breakfast was included in our stay & was lovely. We made the most of it. I thoroughly enjoyed the lattes! Did have a bit of a wait the second morning when the milk for cereal ran out & I couldn't find anyone to top it up. We came across 2 slightly snarky members of staff but it didn't effect our stay. Had drinks in the bar the second night. Nice atmosphere but we were very disappointed when we saw the menus in the bar area. If we'd known there was food like that available we would've eaten there instead of going out. I think the hotel would benefit from having menus in the rooms. It was the first thing we looked for but didn't find. The hotel should also think about having a nonslip mat in the bathroom for use when getting out the shower. I kept having to put a hand towel down so I didn't slip. Otherwise a great stay!

« Conveniently located in town »

Drove up from work, nowhere to pull up outside or nearby but car park across the road. Hotel quite nice, clean and room was big, booked a double, got a double and a single bed. Comfortable and quiet. Buffet style breakfast which are always flavourless and naff and this wasn't any different. No mushrooms, only scrambled egg, cheap sausages etc anyway ok as included but wouldn't pay extra. Cardiff town centre nice in the middle, but lots of drunks and heroin addicts roaming around so a bit offputting

    « Group Visit »

A group of 30 of us stayed at the 4* Clayton Hotel for 3 nights from September 15th - 18th 2015. The rooms were spotless and comfortable except that a lot of the group complained about not having drawers to put their clothes in. There is a large television on a table in the room where a chest of drawers could go with the T.V on top. The food was excellent, and the staff very helpful. Whilst staying in Cardiff we visited Cardiff Castle, very impressive, we had a boat trip around the Bay, visited lovely Tredegar House and St. Fagans living museum. We also saw 2 shows at St. Davids Hall. For me St. Davids Hall was a real disappointment. A typical 60's looking building needing a lot of updating inside. That was just my personal view as the organiser. All in all a really great trip, we all loved Cardiff and would like to return.

« VERY VERY Disappointed With This Hotel & Entire Experience There »

My wife and I are not folks who need to be pampered but when we book a hotel based on the information they post on their website, pictures and write up, we do expect the place to be at the very least, close to what we expect. The four nights we spent in this hotel were among the worst we have experienced in our travels. Unfortunately they were the last four nights of our trip to Ireland and Scotland. The staff is at the very least somewhat interested and helpful. The photos they post of the bar/lounge make it look nice and appealing as a place to go and end a day. Quite the opposite, while there is a bar, it is attached to a deli counter and the area to sit resembles a college campus setting. There is no AC in this hotel thus if you don't want to roast you must leave the window/door open and this allows you to enjoy the extreme noises of this part of Dublin throughout the night. Their wireless system is inept at best, it works in the lobby but not in the room. The bed was passable but they certainly put no money into comfortable pillows (some of the worst I've ever had). All in all, if I were paying $89 for this hotel I would have no room to complain but when paying what we did I certainly expect much more. Also, you have to walk 2 1/2 blocks to self park your car if you have one at the low low price of $38 Euro per night. Do yourself a favor if you want to go and enjoy a stay, don't spend the money on this place!!!

    « Would not return »

Staff were all very nice but my god it is a "faulty towers" experience. There was hardly ever any staff at the bar, but you'd know to walk into the restaurant and you'd find 4 or 5 staff standing around chatting. We ate in the restaurant and despite it not being busy and having 5 staff on, the service was terrible. The food was presented well and was edible- thats about all I could say about it. It appeared that four of those five went on their break together too, leaving one staff member who looked new and really struggled on his own. Upon check in we asked if there was a food menu in the room- although we were told that there was.. There was not. And when we rang reception to request one, we were advised to ring the bar directly. We got one delivered to the room- it was filthy! Granted it was the RWC but we just had to laugh at how unprofessional everything was. We remained relaxed and did not let it upset us but had it been any other weekend- we would have left. The room was lovely- but it was very hot! The A/C was working but didn't have much affect. Overall there just seemed to be a lot of staff who didn't seem to know much about working in a hotel and were not very attentive.

    « Rugby weekend ! »

Top stay here really friendly staff and a great location. We checked in with ease, the room was a touch hot and the air con didn't seem to work we called reception who done something and it worked for a bit until it went off. Breakfast was very good and the bar area was great fun. All in all a nice hotel with ver good staff.

    « Great Hotel With A/C!!!! »

CIE Tours booked us here for one night during our tour of Britain and Ireland in September 2015. After bad experiences at other hotels during our tour, this hotel was a welcome relief. We had A/C and it was quiet and clean and the bed was wonderful. Cardiff was extremely busy because of the 2015 Rugby Championship. Breakfast the next morning was good. Overall a great experience.

    « Comfortable and Quiet »

Conveniently situated near Cardiff Central Station. The front desk staff are friendly, helpful and accommodating. Rooms are of a reasonable size. The beds are comfortable. Very quiet during the night which makes a pleasant change to some! I'm not a fan of the fixed overhead showers as I like to direct the water where it is needed. Reasonable selection at breakfast. I would definitely stay again.

    « Week in Wales »

As part of a U3A coach party staying in the Clayton we found the hotel staff very friendly and welcoming. All of us were over 60 with a large proportion requiri g single rooms, which they provided. Package was bed, breakfast and evening meal (though if you stay as a single person or couple these are extras). Rooms spacious, cleaned daily, beds comfortable, plenty of towels etc. Big choice of breakfast, buffet style though fried, piached or boiled eggs are coo to order, nice and fresh.

    « Over night stay. »

The hotel is central to city center I would class this hotel as a three star. Room was clean I'm not too fond of the double and twin bed as I love to sleep with my bride. Was told there were no Kng Beds at this time. We over looked the rail yard there is noise from the trains. No windows opened but at one time they would have. Windows have been locked. I asked reception where the key to Windows was in case of fire. She advised me you must exit via the stairs. Not to happy with that response. Towels are kept in the closet hairdryer in the desk drawer you had to dry hair in bedroom. Breakfast was buffet style with the usual fare. Coffee machines for your convience. No pots on table. Enjoyed the Latte thank you.

« Brilliant hotel in a great location »

Fabulous room in a brilliant location, we stayed for the last warm up game before the rugby world cup, we were right in the heart of the city. We had a great time and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. We've booked it again for a six nations game next year, can't wait!

« Superbly located for everything in the city »

We were a little concerned to hear that this hotel has become part of a small chain that we hadn't heard of. From the moment we checked in those concerns were totally removed. Absolutely fantastic place to stay. All of Cardiff's main attractions are within a 10 minute stroll. Great service, great staff, in fact great everything !

    « Clayton Hotel Cardiff »

Strategically located near the train station and close to the main street. Quite a few halal eating places within walking distance. The only snag is there is no parking at the hotel and you have to pay to park across the street. Checking in can be quite a hassle to have to drag your luggage to the hotel lobby. Breakfast is not included in the room rate. Our room faces the old train station. The walls are quite thin and people talking in the corridor can be heard from the room. Towels are big, white and fluffy. Wifi is free throughout the hotel. The place to stay when in Cardiff.
