BEST WESTERN Abbots Barton Hotel has offered unique Kentish character to guests since 1927. Its Gothic style building dates back to the 1830s, and ensures all who visit return home with a few Canterbury tales of their own! Today, the hotel is ideal for those seeking the 'picturesque' and the 'personality' that Britain is famed for, with tasteful-yet-traditional refurbishment in recent years only adding to its appeal. Tranquil gardens mean there's as much peace and quiet to be found outside as there is within our 19th Century walls, and you'll find all the comforts and amenities of a first class modern hotel at every turn. The hotel has free onsite parking and is just five minutes' walk from the County Cricket Ground should you want to be bowled over by the tradition and intrigue of the 'Gentleman's Game'. Enjoy your stay.

    « Best wedding venue »

The staff at this hotel are amazing. Emma the wedding planner is the kindest most professional lady who goes out of her way to achieve perfection for the wedding couple. Chantal and Laura Paliulionyte (forgive the spelling ) and also the lady with the dark hair... Please forgive me for not getting your name.. I promise you in an international hotel you would never find such attentive and helpful ladies. Best Western please acknowledge your wonderful staff. You should be proud of them. A very very happy group of guests.

    « Stay for mother's funeral »

The room was a good size and very clean with comfortable beds. We did miss the availability of a mini-bar as we just wanted to chill in our room rather than go down to the bar. Finding a parking space was a bit difficult when we arrived and we couldn't see any disabled spaces. I am a Blue Badge holder.

    « A lucky stop on the pilgrim's road. »

We stopped at this hotel as it was a Best Western marque and we felt it would offer value and quality. We were not disappointed. Staff were gracious and the rate, 80 pounds, was reasonable in the off season. We left the car in the car park while we headed to the cathedral, the city centre was in easy walking distance. We had an excellent dinner in the hotel that evening and were impressed with the creamy pumpkin soup. We did not have the hot breakfast the next day, but the cold breakfast offered many delicious choices. I wish I could say I'll return soon as it was an excellent first night on our trip.

« Great location for a short stay »

A really lovely hotel just a short 10-15 min walk from Canterbury centre. Friendly and helpful staff, both on the desk and at breakfast. Rooms nicely furnished and well maintained, and a nice view out over the garden seating area. Overall a great stay.

    « Night away »

A charming hotel. The room was clean if not a bit dated. The receptionist on our arrival was not the most efficient. Ideally located with Canterbury centre only a fifteen minute casual walk away. Overall a pleasant stay and would consider again if in Canterbury.

    « Pleasant good location »

Well situated, clean, nicely decorated, friendly staff, comfortable, quietish and close to the city centre. Downsides? For breakfast my smoked salmon was like a soggy lettuce and the scrambled egg was like runny porridge. Didn't try the evening meals but the dining room is a little dark and boring; when there are so many cheaper, varied and lively eateries in the city centre, why would you eat in? Recommend cote brasserie, had two really tasty meals there, v extensive menu and fun atmosphere.

    « Lovely hotel »

This is the second time I have stopped here nice hotel, rooms are clean. Breakfast is fab best scrambled eggs I've had in a long time. Large free car park and about a 15 minute walk into town. Can't wait to see what the spa will be like when it's built

    « One Night Mid-weeker! »

A one night stay; we'd have loved to stay longer! We got a really good price for the room with breakfast competitively priced in the morning. Arrived late so just checked in and went to the bar. All of the staff were friendly and very helpful. Room was excellent as were all of the fittings/furnishings throughout the hotel which itself is very attractive (in the old parts) and set well back from the road to Dover so no traffic noise!

    « Midweek stay »

A night's stay was a present from the family. We arrived way too soon, but it was no problem to leave the car there. The hotels location is fantastic; it is set in some lovely grounds. A gentle 10 stroll and we reached the shopping area. The check in staff were friendly and helpful and made us very welcome. Our room was well presented and nice and clean. The room overlooked a building site - but caused no problem. The meal included in the present was the fixed price menu. A somewhat limited choice, but we could have had the price towards the a la carte. The choice was sufficient us. In the event the beef was more textured than we liked (= it was a bit tough!) but the gammon was excellent. Overall the meal experience was very good, with attentive waiting staff. In the evening we found the creaking from the occupants above to be quite intrusive. There was no other noise. This was mentioned to the staff who advised that it will probably be resolved in the next refurbishment. Breakfast provided an excellent meal - a good choice of food with pleasant serving staff. We enjoyed our stay and will probably stay again.

    « Great value hotel »

Very good hotel with very friendly staff. Old building dating back to 1830 full of charm and character, it felt we were staying in a National Trust property We stayed for two nights and found it very relaxing and quality of food good. Within walking distance of Cathedral etc but quiet location. Only complaint was the lighting was a bit subdued.

    « Weekday treat »

Lovely hotel just 10 minute walk from city centre. Great food and good service. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was well furnished and clean. Parking space was a definite bonus as parking in the city centre was expensive and difficult to find. Would definitely stay here again.

    « Groupon Stay »

Lovely staff, great food and well furnished. About the only thing I could complain about was that the bed was a touch firm for me. But then, some people prefer that. The staff were informative and very friendly.

« excellent value for money »

amazing venue full of character and charm, decorated perfectly to match, each member of staff was so welcoming that i would not hesitate in the least to recommend staying here, and almost forgot the food was first class, hats of to the chef

« Dates in need of revamp »

Very old fashioned / dated hotel. Decor out of the 80s in bedroom, lounge and dining room. The room was spacious but looked like my grandmas from 1980! Very noisy at night time too. I could hear neighbours movements , bathroom extractor fan, footsteps and also more annoying from those above !! So a very poor nights sleep. Food was very average. I would have rather have stayed at the premier inn down the road !

    « Lovely Canterbury break »

« TOP OF THE LINE, by keeping the OLD STYLE ENGLISH HOUSE ALIVE »

we spent 4 days in Canterbury, and found this lovely old Hotel only 15 Walking minutes away from the City Centre. It is set back from the road, and was very quiet. The rooms are old fashioned, but very comfortable, and it was clean throughout. Personnel was friendly, helpful, and the breakfast was top of the line for ENGLISH Restaurants - cold and partially warm buffet, where you also could ask for Specials if you wanted something different in the morning. Coffee was perfect, and the Teas were high Quality. In the evening they offered very good tasting Food of all kinds, wine and beer selection was up to international Standards. So we will come again.

« It's the wonderful staff and charm of the hotel that has us returning »

Positives: Lovely staff! Friendly and efficient and couldn't do enough for us. Room was spacious and comfortable. Black out blinds so not woken by bright light but it was quite noisy people in and out of rooms, poor sound proofing. Very handy location for our twins university so we have booked to return and advised other parents of how good it is. 15 min walking distance to town. Free parking although very limited so not guaranteed a space. Negatives: Shower temperamental ...went quickly from very hot to freezing and difficult to regulate. Ordered from the bar menu but quite small menu and by 7pm already a few items not available. Then stopped serving food quite suddenly as restaurant was busy ....didn't make sense as I understood from waiter that it was a pre-booked large crowd so could have been planned for. Then all staff went home leaving an untrained bar person serving a very busy bar. He was delightful and pleasant but only so much he could do so long wait on drinks and no time to do hot drinks. Again poor management planning. Breakfast too expensive so walked into town and ate at a lovely pub for quarter the price. All said we loved it and the good far out weighed the bad and we are returning in a couple of weeks to visit our twins again. This time instead of booking the £55 standard room we have upgraded so will be interested to see what the additional £35 gets us.

« Nice hotel nothing special though »

Stayed for a couple of nights this week. The hotel has good parking, bar area plus restaurant (separate write up on the restaurant awful). Very nice breakfast with friendly staff. The room we had was very tired and needed redecorating. The hotel really does need a face lift. nice grounds if the weather is ok to sit outside. The bar area is very dated and the member of staff serving us didn't even know how to prepare very simple drinks.

    3
« Nice food in the restaurant »

Comfortable, clean rooms. Restaurant had lovely food for dinner and breakfasts. Only small issue was an intermittent buzzing noise coming from next room overnight which kept me awake overnight. Didn't raise with the hotel as quite a subtle noise. Also, substantial building work happening at hotel - did not affect stay as not working overnight.

    « Christmas weekend break »

Me my boyfriend and our daughter came here for the weekend.. We really did enjoy our stay here.. the room was lovely and clean.. The staff were nice and friendly.. And the hotel wasn't far from Canterbury Christmas market.. which we went to and took home so beautiful Christmas decorations and souvenirs. Would definitely recommend to stay here.

    « Wonderful Hotel Experience... »

Stayed for 2 nights for our 30th wedding anniversary. The room, food and service were first class. Staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts were just amazing - as much as you wanted a beautifully presented. Thank you Abbots Barton for a memorable stay...

« What an Awesome Place to Stay! »

This hotel looks like a castle or at least an estate! Gorgeous on the outside and very well appointed inside. My husband, son, and I stayed here for just one night while our daughter (sister) was performing with a choir at Canterbury Cathedral. We would most definitely return should the opportunity arise. One really nice thing about this particular hotel is they offer a family room with FOUR twin beds! What a nice change of pace not to have to reserve TWO hotel rooms. Extremely nice outdoor garden area with tables to enjoy tea or a glass of wine. Well stocked bar with entertainment as well. Totally recommend for families!

« One of the better Best Western hotels »

I stay in Best Western hotels on many occasions and this is definitely one of their better hotels. Nice setting and convenient for Canterbury. Spacious, comfortable , clean, well decorated rooms. Decor throughout the hotel is very good and the public areas are clean and comfortable. I had no trouble with the wifi connection. What makes this hotel is the quality of food in the restaurant. The breakfast buffet is exceptional, large selection of hot and cold food. Try the apple juice. Evening meal in the Fountain restaurant was excellent on the 2 nights. Very good value fixed menu, steak on the main menu was locally sourced from a renowned local butcher. Perfectly cooked and lovely flavour. My only minor criticism was the bed, a little firm!

    « Autumn Weekend »

We are a party of six ladies that stayed here recently. Majority of rooms light, airy and comfortable and staff extremely helpful. However we experienced a few problems in the Fountain restaurant for dinner. After our stay, I forwarded an email was listing our concerns. I have to say that our remarks were dealt with in a most proficient and professional manner and to our great satisfaction. Well done.

    4
    « Noisy »

Staying here this week, I'm not as impressed with it as previous best westerns. The single bed is uncomfortable and the noise of people closing their doors is ridiculous! The bar menu is very limited if you want to eat before 7pm. In my opinion the wifi is hopeless, after giving over far too much information I keep getting limited access and it's an unsecured connection. I have ended up coming off, "forgetting " the network and going back to mobile connection. I have used this "the cloud" wifi before and had the same issues!

    4
    « Nice hotel »

We stayed only for one night, the room was clean, comfy. The building is very nice and it's not too far. Good value for the money what we payed. Nothing special but we didn't need more. The only thing what I didn't understand is when we got back to the hotel around 11.30 in the evening the night porter let us in. I asked if the bar is still open. He said it isn't and he was just about to dissappear as well. Does it mean if we got back a few minutes later he wouldn't let us in? Otherwise we had a good time.

« Great Hotel, 10 minutes walk from Canterbury »

I love Best Western Hotels! We have never been disappointed and Abbots Barton is no exception. Set around an old house in small but lovely grounds this much extended hotel offers a warm welcome, comfortable rooms and fine food in it,s restaurant. No need to go anywhere! but you must! Canterbury city centre and the magnificent cathedral are only a brisk 10 minute walk away and well worth the effort. In the morning we were welcomed to our breakfast table by PIETRE. This man has obviously been customer facing all his life. His welcome was warm and sincere and so professional. What an asset to this hotel. A great base to visit this wonderful city.

« Great hotel to stay in when visiting Canterbury »

Stayed for one night only in this lovely hotel in Canterbury. It looked impressive. Check in was swift, friendly and efficient and the bedroom was quiet, very comfortable and well equipped. Only slight negativity was the room was very warm and had to sleep with the windows open as there was no way of adjusting the temperature. If they can do something about making it possible for guests to adjust the temperature, it would make our stay even better. If I ever find myself in Canterbury again I would definitely see about booking in here again.

    « Short Stay »

One of a few places that take dogs. Convenient to Canterbury City Centre. Hotel is beautiful from the outside, warm, plush and welcoming on the inside. Staff lovely, couldn't do more for us. Dog was welcomed. Food excellent. Definitely will come back again

« The Perfect Stay for historic Canterbury »

We have just enjoyed an all too short stay in this beautiful historic building so fitting for an ecclesiastical centre like Canterbury. Friendly, helpful staff, tasteful comfortable rooms and good food make this a perfect choice for any stay. I will definitely come again....for longer.

« Evening meal 1st night, Dining needs reviewing! »

The property itself is fine. The bedrooms & and bathrooms are more than adequate. However little things do need attending to. Dirty windows on the outside, brighter lighting, make sure all draws open & close properly & that cracks in the wall are at least papered over. The shower is excellent, as are the staff. The dining experience leaves a lot to be desired. 1st evening @ 6.30 pork ribs were off - on a friday - no wrong! Left us with a choice of breaded fish & chips or steak with hand cut chips. Mmm, fish arrived battered & the steak (which was good) arrived with skinny fries! Sharp knives would have helped as well. This issue continued at breakfast where cutting the bacon & very nice sausage was difficult. English breakfast tastes much better served hot!

« Great experience in Canterbury started and finished at the hotel »

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and tidy.Set back from the road with a large front garden, it is very quiet from the traffic. We were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a large suite at no extra cost. Parking is available at no cost which is a great advantage in Canterbury. Would recommend this hotel to others and would certainly stay there next time if/when I am in Canterbury again.

« Morning sunshine streaming in »

Abbotts Barton is always a welcoming hotel with the charm of a manor house and a quiet location near Canterbury city centre, with private parking. Our room was newly refurbished with a very comfortable bed and new bathroom/shower and good wifi. The advantage of this room was the dual aspect windows that streamed in bright sunshine in the early morning-gloroius. This trip was a single night on the way to Dover but would be happy to stay much longer next time.

    « Wonderful »

This Hotel is in a beautyful property with gorgeous surroundings at just 15 minutes walk from the City center. Excellent quality/Price. Super nice, friendly and profesional staff. Breakfast was rich and full of choices. I will book again.

    « Extended family reunion »

This hotel was once a manor house built around 1870, then a hospital in the Great War finally becoming a hotel. It was extended in the 1930s and is currently being added to with conference and sport facilities. The hotel is situated in a lovely 'Green' part of Canterbury, set well back from the main road and it has plenty of parking. The staff were all most friendly and helpful on arrival and throughout our stay. The decor is first class, having retained many original features and originality without becoming dowdy. The carpeting throughout was in first class order and all was kept well spruced. The room we had was a good size with plenty of storage and a well appointed bathroom. The only area where it fell down slightly was on the catering side. Breakfast could be a bit crowded and the food did not quite have the high quality one expects from Best Western. We had one family dinner in the hotel and although the service was very good, the food was not quite up to the mark. This was agreed by most of us attending. But for that, I would have had no hesitation in giving a full five rating. Despite these comments, I thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to have a comfortable stay in Canterbury.

« Good Location Old world building - has potential to be super but not at the moment! »

I liked the location of this hotel - 10 mins from the centre of the city. The hotel itself is very old world and is well set back from the road ensuring reduced noise. I had an excellent room - very comfortable bed and a good modern bathroom in the old part of the hotel. The public rooms are very worn and need a good revamp - soft furnishings. We I arrived, I was asked for the full stay in advance by the receptionist - all nights, although, this was not a term or condition of booking. I expressed surprise but was given no choice! Breakfast although there was plenty of food, it was totally tasteless - I don't know why? - but this was the case? Very basic bread/cereal and yogurt. Yogurt and fruit in a glass - totally soggy? The usual grill was available too. The sausages were very strong and not edible in my opinion. Breakfast staff were pleasant. Overall, not a bad option - good room, good bathroom, good bed, disappointing breakfast and check in experience! This is not a cheep option hotel - I paid well for the stay.

    « great hotel. »

Lovely hotel, peaceful (no slamming doors), good sized bedrooms, attractively furnished (and lots of shelf and cupboard space). Very handy for the city. Only a 10 minute walk from the centre. Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely fluffy towels. Lots of parking.

    « Wonderful Wedding »

We chose Abbots Barton as venue for our wedding reception for the bank holiday weekend August 2016. The staff were helpful and friendly and customer service was on point, absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious which many of our guests complimented on, (particularly the Carrot Curry soup) The venue was clean and tidy and the attention to detail on the extra wedding decorations was fantastic. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to book a wedding close to the city of Canterbury.

    « Birthday »

I just wanted to to take the time to give you feedback on our experience in your hotel today. The room: mattress was very poor and fixtures were broken. The bathroom door handles were even a different metal. The bath had hairs in it where it had not been cleaned properly prior. Also I was unsure why the shower didn't have a curtain or fixture so you could have a shower. This is very odd, not sure why a £40 suppliment is for this poor room. The meal this evening I Had the sole which was very nice and my partner (whos birthday it is today) had the ravoli which seemed like it was out the packet and poor. It was very hot in the room, so much so we had two bottles of water. The desert was another odd thing. The brownie was awful , dry and bad and it came with a "lemon" sorbet which I have never ever seen in all my brownie years. Even the waitress said it was odd. The so called "eton mess", was not a eton mess and not served correctly which we did say. I actually found it offensive why the desserts were even on the bill I signed when I sent them back. The table next to me sent their desserts back also. I think for a total of £140 for room and dinner is an absolutely rip off, I do wish I booked the abode, and to say I was embarrassed was a understatement. I felt this was very poor in general, very poor attention to detail.

« Lovely staff dated rooms »

We took my boyfriends parents away for the weekend to Canterbury as a treat. We received a warm welcome by the reception staff and were given rooms adjacent to each other on the second floor. We ate at the hotel on our first evening in the main restaurant and chose from the a la carte menu. The food was merely mediocre and only a la carte by name unfortunately and even more frustratingly by price. To finish it off we had to wait at least 30-40 minutes for two desserts even though both were cold and required no cooking and one was simply ice cream! The restaurant it appeared just couldn't cope with being not even three quarters full. The waiting staff were the only saving grace of the experience as they were very polite and helpful. The man that worked behind the hotel bar was excellent he was professional, helpful and nothing was too much trouble for him. We decided to have breakfast the next morning giving them the benefit of the doubt but this was unfortunately also a bad experience given that all of the hot items were merely luke warm. Again it was expensive and given the cost of the breakfast we expected a much better experience than we received. The final straw and the reason for me taking the time to write this review was the level of noise experienced in the room. Both nights we were woken from sleep and then kept awake for what felt hours by people walking about above us. There is absolutely no sound proofing in the hotel at all and the floors are so noisy that the tiniest amount of movement from above sounds like a herd of elephants moving around - incredibly difficult to sleep through. To top it off there were pigeons nesting above our window so you would finally manage to drift off to sleep only to be woken by pigeons scratching around and cooing. The noise from above rooms 202 and 203 was so bad that both couples have left the hotel today feeling tired and unrested which is not what you hope for when you have a weekend break. In summary lovely staff but terrible rooms from a noise perspective and less than average food charged at top notch prices. Sure there are better places to stay in Canterbury.

« Wouldn't have wanted to stay more than one night »

I booked a suite expecting a slightly higher level of accommodation and got a mattress so springy it almost ejected my wife from the bed when I sat on it and a bathroom without a shower. What hotels have rooms without showers these days? For one night it did the job but I would have questioned it if the stay had been longer.

« A disastrous "Big Night" at the Abbots Barton restaurant/Best Western »

Six of us took off in high spirits for the Best Western Abbots Barton across the street from our hotel in Canterbury. We had just walked the nine-mile Crab and Winkle Way, a path connecting the two towns of Canterbury and Whitstable and were showered an more than presentable for our celebratory last night dinner. Despite its Best Western affiliation, the hotel is located in a beautiful nineteenth century brick building; the restaurant was tastefully appointed with siena red walls and crisp white linens. When we sat down, there was a hush over the dining room, not because our mostly American group had committed a communal faux-pas, but because none of the seated diners had food of any description on their tables. We were but six more lambs to the slaughter of waiting more than two hours to be served. The menu was strange: a few obscure dishes like the roast pigeon appetizer, accompanied by exactly three raspberries to the cheese soufflé with apple and celery salad, a main course nod to the vegetarians. We thought we were in for an adventure. I attempted to order a "garden of England" salad, a few greens accompanied by a local cheese and for some reason, unavailable that night. Although the restaurant is located just eight miles from the coast, only sea bass and cod were on the menu (prawns, crayfish, oysters and winkles are listed on other local menus). After ninety minutes, only four meager soups and two wooden boards with exactly six half-slices of bread had appeared. We speculated that the chef had died and was being installed in the freezer while the wait staff fretted; that the pigeon was being chased around the courtyard by a sous-chef. Either of these preposterous scenarios was possible. My husband was the last served his simple steak frites at 10:00, two hours and fifteen minutes after we'd been seated. The four soufflés were served in four inch round ramekins and were as flat as the Kent landscape. Cold, unappetizing and flavorless, these were all we had to sustain us; the apple and celery salad had morphed into mushy cauliflower and carrots. Our sixth friend's cod was oversalted and almost inedible. The waitstaff, who had managed to keep their composure despite inquiries from all over the dining room, then served up a bill that was twenty pounds over the actual price of this abysmal meal. We complained to management at the front desk who adjusted the bill, but said they had not received a single other complaint from their guests. This was plainly a lie because during the wait we had bonded with another table of six and heard what lay in store for us. Not only would we never return, the morning after we are still wondering whether the chef survived the night or is being carried out to the waiting hearse in the handsome graveled driveway of Abbots Barton.

    « Beautiful setting for a wedding »

My brother and his wife got married here earlier in the year, and the hotel proved to be an ideal location for them to get married. The hotel itself is very grand looking and very appealing on the eye with plenty of free parking to the side. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival and once we got to our rooms we were pleasantly surprised. They were well appointed (if perhaps a little dated, but we felt it added to the charm) and generously sized. The main thing however was that the bed was comfortable and I had a good nights sleep after a busy day. The hotel was clean throughout and the staff seemed keen to help whenever they could. The bar area was a bit of a walk from the function room (there is no bar in the function room we hired) but the bar itself was well stocked, and the man on the bar was entertaining and accommodating. The wedding went smoothly, and the hotel was a great venue and a great help with setting everything up prior to the day. They even kept certain things for us to pick up the day after even after the room was cleared to be used for another function which was a helpful touch. The only negative was that the wedding planners left at around 5pm and there was no one to co ordinate the wedding. This was only an issue for us as none of us really knew what to do next (cake cutting etc), but that aside i'd recommend the hotel as a wedding venue, and for somewhere to stay if visiting Canterbury/East Kent.

« Five star treatment at a three star establishment. »

We got a last minute deal with woucher and we weren't sure what to expect. It looks very impressive and is so near the town. But you feel as if you're in a country hotel. The staff are lovely and very helpful. We had a beautiful large room with everything you might need. We had dinner in the lovely restaurant. The food was excellent served with a smile. Breakfast was great. The fruit fresh not tinned! The best hotel breakfast I've had in a while.

    « A revelation! »

Having had mixed experiences at Best Western hotels in the past, we were hoping for better things at this hotel - and we were not disappointed. The reception staff were delightful and couldn't have been kinder or more helpful. Our room was just what we had asked for and we found the food at both dinner and breakfast to be both tasty and plentiful. But what really made our 5 night stay so enjoyable was the exceptional performance of every staff member that served or looked after us. Under the expert and good humoured guidance of the team leaders, they worked well and happily to make sure that their guests had all that they required. Well done and thank you to everyone of you, we will be back!

« Charming hotel with excellent service »

Charming, classic hotel near the center of Canterbury. Parking area, delicious breakfast, very friendly staff who were very eager to help us with any problem. Location was perfect: with a 5-10min walk, you find yourself in the center of Canterbury.

« Ticked the boxes well »

Stayed for one night after a Kent uni drop off. The reception team were spot on , on arrival. Room on 3rd floor was splendid, Velux windows with blinds, nice bed, coffee etc making and a good bathroom and shower. Hotel decor is in deep reds and old fashioned settees and cushions, the lift is like a small carpeted room, something from DIsney. Lounge bar and service good, plenty of places to sit in far flung rooms of sunken settees if need be or even outside , it was pleasant enough Good position to explore Canterbury which is a ten minute walk to the top of the pedestrian zone. Shops nearby to hotel eg Tesco Express. The hotel ticked all the boxes helping us to be close to Kent UNi, explore Canterbury, break up a long drive and offer a good night's sleep,

    « Excellent stay »

An excellent two night say in lovely Canterbury. A proper hotel, wonderful staff and really close to the city centre. Very good buffet breakfast, nothing too much trouble. Highly recommended and worth the extra you pay compared to Premier Inn or Travel Lodge.

« Pleasant surroundings in built up area »

Abbots Barton hotel Canterbury is set off a major road. It has good parking facilities and an attentive desk staff who made our booking in procedure very easy. The room was clean and tidy and a good size for two people. A small useable bathroom. The location was excellent for the Kent County Cricket Ground which was no more than a few minutes walk. We only had the breakfast in the dining area which we both thought was very good. Tea and coffee facility's in room. We would use this accommodation again.

    « Grenadier weekend »

How fantastic our stay was at this beautiful hotel the people who run this hotel should give themselves a pat on the back. Breakfast was good and plentiful nothing was to much trouble even having coffee on the terrace. We had the honeymoon suit again a great room a couple of points I think you should lose the dated net curtains they make the room look dark and are old fashioned and perhaps more coffee and milk could be left out .And the other point could you convert a room to disabled friendly as one if our party is disabled and it would have made his career's life a little easier Again thank you from all of us

    « good good good »

First impressions, a bit old fashioned. The staff are attentive and cheerful The standard bedroon much bigger than expected. Plus points, are lack of traffic noise, allowing the window to be wide open at night. There is A/C, but it was not needed. Breakfast was very good, lovely bacon and sausages. Would I stay again, yes if I can get the same offer.

« Nice Hotel, Nice Room »

My wife and I stayed for a night before heading to Sandwich. I had stayed before and this is a really nice old hotel. Nice big rooms and plenty of parking. Its about a 10 minute walk to Canterbury city center so it is close to everything. We were hoping for a more comfortable bed and pillows but they were average for the UK.

    « 1 night break »

The hotel is in quiet grounds and walking distance from the city. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The room was spacious and comfortable. We did not eat in as there is so much choice in the city. The parking and wifi are free.

« unpleasant stay at this hotel would not use this chain of hotels again »

Unfortunately stay at this hotel was unpleasant arrived after a long journey kep waiting a t reception then given a late dinner at 9.45 then kept waiting again for a hour before unplesant food was given sent back then given other food more unpleasant made to feel embarrased at sending back. In our room air conditoning not working plumbing extremely noisy have stayed at this hotel before would not come back

    « Comfortable homely hotel »

Stayed here for 3 nights as a walking group. Staff were most helpful, welcoming and polite. Hotel had homely feel. Rooms were comfortable with air conditioning and adequate furnishing. Showers were very efficient and the water hot. Although rooms had adequate room lighting appliances, the wattage in my room could have been brighter, although this is a problem in most hotels to be fair. The breakfast was good and varied and the hot food temperature was well maintained. The provisions were also topped up regularly and as needed. Dinner choices for our group were rightly limited (jointly agreed) and for the most part we found it to be tasty. There were a couple of exceptions when dishes were not strictly as described, or rather as expected - perhaps our fault. A couple of soups were luke warm when served but this was quickly rectified when drawn to the kitchen staff attention. It was a thoroughly enjoyable stay - my third visit as a party group. Would thoroughly recommend the hotel if you are visiting the City, with the shops and cathedral within easy walking distance. There are also many lovely walks available from the hotel base with lots of super country pubs within easy drive.

    « Made very welcome »

Beautiful hotel, with the staff to back it up. Made to feel very welcome and special. Air conditioning in the room was a big help on hot days. The only down side was the menu was quite limited, however they did have gluten free bread for sandwiches and gluten free biscuits for the room which was a nice touch.

« No room at the breakfast table »

We stayed the weekend here and had a great time. Staff were polite and friendly. Room was spacious clean and had everything a traveller could want. But having to queue for a table at breakfast time in a hotel of this caliber and price seems a little absurd. There is a much bigger room used for functions why not use this? The management obviously know how many guests they have and therefore should make provision for them. Not a small notice on the breakfast room door saying at busy times you may have to wait please be patient.

« Quick walk to the Cathedral »

This is a nice hotel, looks like it was converted from a manor as Best Western has done that a lot in England. We arrived and the parking lot was very full, it was a Friday evening so probably why. Its about a 20 minute walk to the Cathedral and the downtown area with restaurants. Our room did not have a stand up shower, just the attachment for sitting and holding over yourself. Hilarious hi-jinx ensued because its just something we're not used to and wasn't sure how to best not make a lake inside the room. The decor is old fashioned but perfectly clean and adequate for our one night's sleep.

    « Lovely hotel »

I have spent 4 nights at the hotel. The personnel was extremely nice and effective. They even organized an early breakfast for me on my departure day. Nice atmosphere. Clean rooms. I will definitely come back.

« Great staff, great hotel »

We initially booked one night prior to going on a cruise from Dover, but were so impressed that we booked a further three nights after the cruise. The staff were extremely helpful especially Aura and Esther (who I promised to put a good word in regarding a pay rise). We had an excellent room and would definitely recommend this hotel which is ideally placed for many attractions in the area. I look forward to staying here again.

    « Comfy hotel »

We had two comfortable nights at the Abbots. Rooms are cosy, bathroom a little small but a decent shower with complementary toiletries. Buffet English breakfast and a nice evening meal. Check in efficient and staff friendly. Parking on site

    « Excellent, friendly hotel »

We enjoyed 2 nights at this hotel. It is conveniently located within a 15-minute walk to Canterbury High Street. The hotel is in an old fashioned building, however everything is relatively modern, whilst retaining the charm element. There are a number of places to sit and read, downstairs, as well as a bar area and restaurant. Staff are friendly and welcoming. We were upgraded due to animal allergies, many thanks to staff for understanding. The room was a good size, with a modern flat screen tv. The hotel is well run, and nothing was too much trouble. I do have a suggestion on the food menus, as these are relatively expensive. For example breakfast was £13 a head, and as a result, we walked into town each day for Breakfast. We would have stayed at the hotel, had there been some flexibility, eg for a continental option, etc. This also applied to the evening meals, where the options were all too costly for our budget. We did find a number of splended restaurants within Canterbury, but would have had at least one evening meal at the hotel, if the option was there. It looks like the hotels main client base is with business visitors, however there are a lot of people who wish to visit Canterbury, and this hotel is well placed, bearing in mind there are few cheap options to park within Canterbury. We were, very impressed with the hotel, and hope to visit again in the future.

« Great value stay with great staff »

My wife and I planned a last minute trip to the coast and picked to stay at the Abbots Barton hotel. We were not disappointed. The room was clean and tidy and recently updated I would guess. The staff were really pleasant and helpful, especially on the front desk. We had a broken TV that was fixed whilst we were out for dinner. Breakfast was good, lots of fresh fruit and the menu was pretty extensive (only slight gaff was the "frozen" fresh bread that was served up for my wife!). For a 3 star hotel it was worth the B&B rate we managed to get at the last minute, close to the centre of Canterbury (15 minute walk) and great staff.

    4
    « Excelled our expectations! »

We booked this hotel mainly for the location as it's around a 10 minute walk from the city centre and not to expensive. We were dubious about the decor of the hotel as a lot of photos on the reviews look very old fashioned and we are a young couple. We were relieved when we walked into our room to find it was quite nice and modern enough! The view from our window was s building site but we were out exploring most of the time so it didn't bother us at all! The staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful, great room service and food.

« Canterbury and White Cliffs of Dover »

Good location if you are staying near Canterbury and Dover. We stopped here from London. Checked in and continued to Dover. Staff let us check in to some of the rooms and stowed are luggage. Hotel had there own parking area. Walking distance to Canterbury Cathedral and the small town. Easy drive to Dover and back. Nice restaurant and bar. Plenty of pubs and restaurant within walking distance.

The hotel was pleasant in all respects. The staff was very helpful, the room was clean, included air conditioning, ample self parking was available, and located so as to allow walks to all the attractions.

    « 5 Excellent Days »

The hotel was easy to find and our reception was exceptional as were all the staff. Our room on the third floor was splendid and the air conditioning well worth the upgrade to this room. The cleaning staff were very efficient. The dining room was professionally run and the food was enjoyable and the staff very efficient. Canterbury and the surrounding environs were quite pleasant. Overall a perfect break.

    « Wonderful Hotel »

Locates at nice, silent environment but easily access to town centre. We stayed in family room and good enough for 2 adult and 2 kids. We drove to town centre by 5 mins and Dover within 30mins. But lock should be improved as you have to pull harder in order to secure, I bet that it will be very annoying if we go out at late night/early morning.

    4
« Too small family room »

The family room we stayed in was really too small. The four beds fitted in, but there was hardly any room left for the luggage. The staff recognized it but could not further help us. The hotel itself has a nice manor look from the outside. Inside things are, similar to our family room, all a little small and narrow: the corridors to the rooms, the lobby, the restaurant without windows to the outside. The breakfast is good and also the bar is joke.

    5
    « Very good hotel »

Very nice hotel, staff helpful and friendly, room beautifully decorated and clean and everything in working order. Good location, Canterbury city centre is within walking distance for able-bodied. Parking on-site is limited. Fairly expensive hotel but you get what you pay for.

    « Lovely stay »

I had a very nice stay at this hotel. I stayed at a 4 star hotel in london immediately after this one and found Abbots Barton a much better hotel. I had a single room which had a single bed, desk and chair and table and chair. I was worried the room would be quite small but it was lovely and big. The bathroom was also spacious with a shower and bath. Everything was lovely and clean. Biscuits, tea and coffee, individual toiletries and a vanity kit were provided. There was air conditioning in the room which worked well but was a bit noisy for leaving on at night. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. Breakfast was buffet style and was very nice. The hotel is situated about 10mins walk from the town centre. The nearest station is Canterbury East which is probably about 15 to 20 mins walk away. It is set in its own grounds so you can sit in the garden if liked. The hotel is undergoing development but I was not aware of any noise or disruption from this. The only reason I did not score it 5 out of 5 is that the walls are quite thin so you can hear guests next door and toilets flushing and air conditioning in adjoining rooms are quite loud. I slept ok but it could disturb you if you are a light sleeper.

    « Fine »

It was fine. The breakfast, decor and air condition is all very mid-90s. A bit of a time-warp. Fairly convenient for town, staff doing their best. It was clean and comfortable. The breakfast is in fact buffet only (the website suggests there' an al la carte menu)

    « Lovely Hotel. »

My husband, Son and Granddaughter stayed here for a nearby family wedding. We had a family room for my son and his daughter, whilst my husband and had a de Lux double. We arrived early for pick up for the wedding and as soon as my son's room one of the reception came and told him were we were having a coffee in the bar with other family members. The reception staff were excellent friendly and helpful. My son said his room was good, although his daughter insisted on the double, while son had a single. Our room was lovely and we particularly like the spa bath, having said we had a problem getting it to go on then a bigger problem as it would not go off. The breakfast had plenty of choice with very obliging staff. On checkout again the reception staff were pleasant and helpful. Would we stay again? Unlikely as we were very disappointed in Canterbury, which had changed a great deal since our last visit there, with quite a number of foreign rough sleepers and we did see one problem with the police midmorning on a Saturday. But the hotel. was very good.

    5
    « Stunning »

Enjoyed the most intimate & delicious meal in this restaurant. A special stay for an anniversary. Parts of the hotel were looking tired & unfortunately our room was right by a large & noisy air conditioning unit suspended on the wall. The noise all night made sleep difficult but would be sure to request a different room on a return visit.

« Stylish, great customer service, but.. »

Very beautiful hotel, traditional English style, could be the place for film, documentary, history. Impressive furniture, decorations, nice garden. Breakfast was good but kept standard, not surprised; price high and goes with time and customers request, better booking on line and not asking late evening at the desk. Noisy stairs, narrow corridors, old bathroom, even if clean and refurbished. Very surprised there is still a telephone room and a very nice library. Inside also a small, cosy pub or bar.

« Lovely hotel, friendly staff »

Stayed for 2 nights with a friend. Great location, quick 10 minute walk into town. Great room, very clean and spacious, though rather warm at night even with the air con! Staff very friendly throughout the hotel. Very good choice at breakfast, all freshly replenished throughout. Free wifi worked well and was quick enough for my needs. In all a great trip, would recommend.

    « Nice Hotel »

My husband, my dog an I stayed for two night at this nice hotel. We found tranquil days, good weather for being at the beach and resting. We absolutely got it! Staff is friendly and helpful. The best thing is that the hotel allows dogs, and they lend a bowl and a bed for it inside room. Negative points: personally the mattress is quite soft and breakfast poor quality.

    « Great hotel...lovely staff. »

Friendly efficient staff...lovely room..excellent choice and quality of food at breakfast. Negative points were....WiFi reception poor.....Restaurant menu with half the listed choices unavailable... No draught beer in the bar!.......Nevertheless a great place to stay and would recommend........

« Excellent hotel, easy walking distance to the city centre »

We stayed for a weekend with my girlfriend and her parents - the hotel was really nice and accommodating to us. The staff were friendly and helpful. We did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on that. The rooms were well equipped and decent sized, the decor was old-fashioned but we found it charming and different. They lose a point because they follow the increasingly common habit of hotels to provide wifi by requiring users to sign up with their contact details to access the internet which I don't like for both practical and ideological reasons.

« Great hotel and very helpful staff. »

Spent the day at the hotel today for work purposes. I found all the staff to be extremely helpful and going out of their way to help guests. I had lunch and plenty of drinks throughout the day and everytime I placed an order the team were brilliant. Particularly Jennifer and Aura also the other young lady that took over the reception area in the afternoon. When I paid my bill she went out of her way to make sure everything had been ok and we had a little chat. Great food and fantastic service. Well done.

« A beautiful hotel where we had a problematic stay, but the staff made up for it. »

We complained about our room cited below but the receptionist was understanding and kind and gave us a reduction so she made it al better. The biggest problem for me was our room (106) which I realise might not be the case for other rooms. It was a suite as my 14 year old stepson was with us. The door opened up into the lounge area which held a sofa bed for my stepson. This room had Air Con, but our ajoining bedroom did not. Hence the most uncomfortable night's sleep for the three nights we stayed there. Also the bathroom didn't have a standing shower. It was a bath with a shower attachment on the taps. The roof was sloping so we couldn't even stand in the bath and having a kind of shower was near impossible (and very messy as there wasn't a shower curtain). I would say most of the staff were amazing and extremely polite, kind and professional, but the ones who were not, were the waitresses in the restaurant. Actually the evening food menu was a disappointment. Almost half of the menu was not available. as they had new chef so our choices were very limited. My husband had the beef which was lovely but the spoonful of mashed potato left him unsatisfied and hungry. My grilled chicken was dry and again not very satifying. All this for a fairly expensive meal. However it was our unsmiling waitress who made the evening too serious and more unpleasant than it needed to be. She barely spoke and didn't check up on us at all. The morning staff at breakfast were no better and were so different from the cheerful and nice reception and bar staff. It was definitely a nice hotel, but was just let down by a few but important aspects. I would try it again if I was in Canterbury again and it was in an ideal position, both in a quite location but very close to the city centre.

« Nice hotel convenient for city centre »

Stayed one night whilst attending gig at Cricket Ground which is only a 10 minute walk from hotel (and 10 mins other way into city centre). Had deluxe double room - spacious and traditionally furnished, only problem was with bath/shower water temperature (too hot) which we reported to reception. Wedding was going on so hotel quite busy but we arrived at 12.00 and could park OK and get into our room straight away. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast good although I prefer a served rather than a buffet breakfast. Not cheap but Canterbury is a popular city so cost to be expected to get a decent hotel. Nice grounds to front of hotel - it is on the main road but A/C in room meant you didn't have to open the window if you didn't want to.

    2
    « Watch out »

Funny place this..... £140 per night without breakfast is not cheap. When there is a wedding going on it seems that service for paying residents is second best. Parking is a nightmare. ...getting food is too much trouble almost....If you want a decent coffee after 10 pm good luck....on the subject of food not sure they know what medium steak is....think they have never met a brioche bun as advertised on a burger and then they decide to keep it under the hot plate for ages so it is rock hard. Staff seem completely disinterested ....certainly the waiting and bar staff....probably an important wedding to attend to. When I did complain about the burger bun there was no offer to change ..just a blank tough luck look....be warned

I was recently at the Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel for a wedding and found the whole hotel experience wonderful. This is an extremely well run hotel with friendly helpful staff throughout and beautiful grounds. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to all and intend to stay again, next time exploring more of Canterbury.

« Very good hotel, close to Canterbury »

We arrived on Friday for a nights stay, the reception staff are friendly and helpful. Our room 216 (a twin) was a very good size with plenty of storage and overlooked the car park. Unless you have the windows open it isn't noisy so that was good. The hotel itself is a 10 minute walk down one road into Canterbury which is ideal. Breakfast was ok but found replenishing stock rather slow, we had put some items on our plate but then found out a few hot items were missing, we waited a while but nothing was coming from the kitchen, so rather than let ours go cold, went and ate what we had. The scrambled egg and hash brown never did seem to come out. Otherwise breakfast would have been top notch

    « Excellent stay »

Stayed last weekend as we had friends who got married at the hotel. The check-in was friendly and extremely efficient. They advised us that unfortunately the air conditioning unit in our room was not working and would take a week to fix so they offered us a £25.00 per night discount which we accepted, they also put a fan in the room. The public areas are really nice and there are plenty of sofas and chairs to relax and read a book. The room was fine if a little snug and the bed was extremely comfortable although the pillows were quite flat, however we slept like babies! Our friends wedding was great and the rooms used were excellent. The food was also very good. although I wasn't too keen on the desert. The bar is not cheap however as I live in the north I'm not used to paying £6.40 for a pint of shandy and a diet coke, so was a little shocked when a round of drinks cost in excess of £20.00! The breakfasts are excellent. The buffet has a good choice and it was great to have hot food..... the bacon and sausages in particular were excellent. Overall I would certainly stay here again and thanks again to all the staff for making our stay comfortable. The only reason for not getting 5 stars is due to the air-conditioning not working.

    « AMAZING ABBOTS BARTON! »

I got back from a four night coach trip last night, and wished I could have stayed for another four! The single room I had, 127, was huge compared with other ones I have stayed in, and had everything you could want. I found the staff exceptional in their attitudes. Kind, friendly, always smiling, and so patient with people who needed something sorting. They have certainly been well trained. So much choice at breakfast to pick from, it was lovely, and our menu for the evening had a very good choice of tasty meals to choose from. Wine was a good price, and after enjoying all that you really need to walk into Canterbury to work some off it off. I would like to say thank you so much to all the staff for a wonderful time.

    « Lovely Hotel »

Spent a comfortable night here. Hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Canterbury centre but as I was with elderly parents, there was a convenient bus stop a short walk away, so we hopped on the bus and I didn't have the hassle or expense of city centre parking. The hotel is set in lovely grounds and was very peaceful. Our rooms were clean and comfortable and had all we needed. Our only slight issue was that we wanted to eat early in the restaurant as we were tired. The restaurant opened at 6:30, but we were told by reception staff that as there was a large party of people expected at 7pm, we couldn't book a table there until 7:30pm. In my room was a leaflet advertising their bar meals - which was perfect for us so we went downstairs to order a bar meal instead. The menu on the leaflet in the room was different from the menu at the bar! In addition, many of the dishes were "off"! I was getting a bit annoyed by this point, however we were overheard by the restaurant manager, who saved the day!. She was a very efficient woman, who made the impossible happen! Within minutes she had brought us a copy of the set menu from the restaurant, which we were quickly able to select from, gave us the choice of eating in the bar area or in the restaurant - we were fine in the bar, waitresses appeared with tablecloth, cutlery etc and delicious food followed quickly after. Job done. We were in and out in half an hour and able to retire happily to our rooms for an early night. I'm so sorry that I didn't catch her name - I had hoped to see her at breakfast but unfortunately didn't, but I hope that Best Western appreciate this lady, who is a great asset to their company.

« The good work and welcome of many ruined by a few »

My wife and I stayed at the Abbots Barton hotel on the nights of 11 and 12 July together with our two adult children, our second visit to the hotel. The reception staff were delightful and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. If we had not made two mistakes, it would have been a perfect visit. Our mistakes were to order drinks in the bar and eat in the hotel restaurant. In both places we were served by the same individual, a surly man in his late twenties or early thirties who, unlike every other member of the hotel staff, did not wear a name badge. Whilst I was at the bar waiting to be served by him, another guest ordered and was asked "Anything else?" To which she replied "A smile would be nice". He was equally unsmiling when he served me. On the evening of 11 July, we had the misfortune to be served by him in the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine and, when he brought it, he didn't offer it for tasting but asked "Should I tip it out, then?" which seemed to be his way of asking "Should I pour it?". It seemed very clear that either he did not enjoy his job or was totally unsuited to it. The meal itself was disappointing. The starters were fine, but the main courses were cold, which we pointed out at the time. After dinner, I went to reception and cancelled our restaurant booking for the following evening and told them why. The receptionist was appalled and must have reported the complaint to her supervisor because the supervisor called us in our room to ask for more information, which we gave her. She reduced the bill for the meal, which we greatly appreciated. In summary, this could be a lovely hotel but, in our opinion, it was let down on this occasion by a poorly-managed kitchen and an utterly miserable waiter/barman.

the staff at the hotel were excellent, food was very disappointing, nice big bedrooms. pillows left a lot to be desired, they could do with investing in some good ones. room we had was at the front of the hotel, where the car park was, could be a bit noisy.

« Very friendly relaxing hotel »

We arrived early before check in time but were still greeted with a very friendly reception. They took our details and we decided to walk in to Canterbury which only took around fifteen minutes so giving the hotel a great location. We had a lovely time in the city especially in the wonderful Cathedral. We returned to the hotel, checked in and then enjoyed some drinks in the peaceful garden in the sunshine! Our room very clean, comfortable and spacious and was at the front of the hotel. We had booked this hotel through Secret Escapes and the deal included breakfast and a two course evening meal. Dinner was very good and we were waited on by friendly helpful staff. Breakfast was a buffet with a great selection of fruit, cereals, full English and Continental and an easy to use proper toaster - that was a bonus! Again the staff at breakfast were very friendly. I would recommend this hotel and would stay again if we return to Canterbury.

    « Great wedding venue »

Great place to have a wedding. Friendly welcome, nothing was too much bother for the staff. Rooms, clean, comfortable and spacious, had everything you needed for a restful nights sleep after such a busy day. Food was fantastic and accommodated for gluten free dining. Lovely gardens. Free car park and very central for Canterbury to see the sights.

« It feels like a hotel that could be lived in. »

Our stay was over a Monday night. Parking at the hotel was not a problem. The room was a good size. The view was over building works, though that didn't bother us. No work was going on - so no noise from the works. The ventilation system did make a constant hum - just tell yourself you're on a cruise liner. Not loud enough to be a problem. This is not a new build hotel, so it has some of the character of an old country house. Dinner seems to sit early, so don't go late and expect it to be busy with a full range of deserts (in our case). there was an excellent buffet breakfast - continental and full English. There are also plenty of staff about to keep things running smoothly, bring drinks, keep things smooth and tidy. Very slick and professional, without being overbearing. Overall, a very enjoyable stay.

Huge compliments to the staff of Abbots Barton Hotel who welcomed us back after our last visit in 2012. Everything was as we remembered it, the 5 star service, the ambience, the excellent meals, our comfortable room and the overall setting of the hotel. We can't wait to come back to Canterbury to stay again at this gem of an establishment.

Stayed I the Abbots Barton Hotel this week. Pretty standard as a BW, but functional clean and nice cheery and helpful staff. But could do with an update, bitter was unavailable as was about half the bar menu, which was a bit annoying, In saying that I tweeked my food order and it was perfect Breakfast was buffet style, large restaurant, good drinkable coffee and a fairly good choice of food. Good size car park and free wifi. Tony's Tips. About a 20 minute walk into the city centre. Hotel is dog friendly Room 203 is directly opposite the lift. Come and watch AFC Wimbledon if you have a free Saturday.

    « Graduation 2016 »

We booked in here for one night, during graduation it was a struggle to find a hotel. Location was spot on for the family & the room was comfortable. Breakfast was disappointing as for the price of our stay over £ 200 for the night, I would of expected waiter/waitress service, it was nothing special, a self service buffet. After the graduation ceremonies we returned to the hotel about 9.30pm. The staff were polite and helpful, I did have to find a member of staff to serve us some drinks.

Very good hotel with kind staff and excellent buffet breakie! Will definitely be back!! We sat in the bar and had a drink which was very relaxing. There was a function in the evening but this did not spoil our stay.

    « Excellent »

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate his bday. The hotel is located about 10 mins walk away from the centre of Canterbury so very convenient as we could leave the car in the carpark. The room was fabulous. The breakfast is plentiful and staff very attentive. Highly recommend.

Beautiful location!! The hotel was very easy to find, and when we arrived, we got a free upgrade! Going through the reception and hallways, we were in awe for the decor! The room was also very lovely, clean and was decorated in style. It took us a while to find out, how to work the airco, but once we did, it was "a breeze" ;-) Everyone who worked there, was very friendly and helpful! Dinner and breakfast was very well put together. We definately want to come back to visit!

« If your thinking of going here think again »

My sister in law booked this hotel as a present for our 25th wedding anniversary .as it was hers also a couple of days later we thought we would book them the same place so we could all go together .what a mistake . I thought it would be good to upgrade our room to the executive suite .what a mistake We were put in a small loft room where you couldn't swing a cat .you couldn't open the toilet door properly as the sink was behind the door .the decoration was tired and of poor quality .I decided to make a cup of tea as you do , there was only two tea bags two milks and one hot chocolate. then I found a little note saying please don't open the windows s the pigeons like to fly into the rooms. on the day it was quite warm so I decided to put the air conditioning on guess what it didn't work. the room was getting hotter and hotter .so decided to go down to the bar and cool down and have a word with reception .reception gave me some more t bags and some milk great I thought so I took them back to the room and guess what swipe key didn't work so another trip to reception this time I explained the air conditioning did not work and also about the key I don't think they believed me so the lady followed me back up to the room she tried the key didn't work she tried air conditioning didn't work .she said she was sorry about all this but she couldn't get air conditioning fixed so basically I had to put up with it .don't forget this is an executive suite as big a a shed Not forgetting my sister in laws room .its must have been the smallest hotel room I've ever seen So please find another hotel this hotel is a take on Sorry about the rant but I thought you all should know

    « A lovely birthday treat »

Booked the hotel through Secret Escapes to celebrate my husbands 70th birthday and weren't disappointed. The hotel was easy to find on the out skirts of the main city. We were greeted by friendly reception staff who had upgraded us to the bridal suite and we were made to feel very welcome. The room was on the first floor and was large and spacious with lovely decor. The bathroom was also spacious with a large spa bath which was simple to get in and out of and easy to use. The bed was very comfortable. The room contained air conditioning but we preferred to open windows. The decor of the hotel would probably be considered by younger people to be dated but every where was clean and well laid out. The restaurant was pleasant and the cooked breakfast was well cooked, not greasy. Would liked to have seen a better selection of cheeses and ham for the continental breakfast, but that may have been to cut down on waste. We were informed to request anything we couldn't see. Our main meals in the evening were of a good choice and were well cooked. There was a problem with a fridge/ freezer while we were there which meant a restrictive menu but the kitchen & waiting staff went out of their way to make sure my husband's birthday meal was enjoyable. Everyone l dealt with was very pleasant and helpful and l would return.

Attended a work function here recently. Parking ample. Location and access good. Well kept and decorated. Clean and tidy venue. Staff attentive and friendly. Food of. A good choice and catered for vegetarians and gluten free diets. No problems will visit again.

« Generally very good with occasional lapses. »

Very friendly & comfortable with generally excellent dining. Some things not working properly (e.g. shower and toilet seat, the former reported but no improvement or feedback) and some surprising items running out (bread in evening, cheese at breakfast). Wifi free but annoyingly had to provide registration details and then log in again each time my iPad was switched on.

What a most fantastic hotel and the most amazing staff, we had our wedding at this venue a day and must admitted it exceeded our expectations, the whole setup was totally professional and nothing was too much for the staff. Thanks Abbotts Barton for helping our dreams come to life.... and a very special thanks to Magdalena and Aura.

    « Wonderful »

The hotel itself and the staff are exceptional. Very friendly and helpful. Food in the restaurant was wonderful. The reception staff are multi-lingual and go out of their way to make your stay something to remember. The restaurant and bar are both lovely and make one feel at home.

    « Birthday present »

I bought a night in this hotel for my mum as she had been talking about visiting Canterbury for quite some time. From what she told me "I nearly teared up driving up the driveway" it's a very grand looking hotel with cute rooms, floral decor and close to Canterbury. I was also able to pay over the phone before their arrival. All in al they enjoyed their stay and found it clean, presentable and very friendly

« Three days is enough »

Canterbury in high season was very busy with tourists, but this hotel is at least a nice comfortable walk out of the city. However our king suite was tiny with a small bed and two armchairs making it difficult to walk round. The front desk staff don't have a good attitude, and the service in the bar,was almost non-existent.

    « Great location »

Lovely hotel which is within easy walking distance to the centre of Canterbury. We spent a few days here and had a room in the old part of the building. Nice and quiet and very relaxing. Lovely breakfast and the main restaurant has a nice atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again.

    « Dmarbeck »

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a 5 week trip around the Sth east and nth east of England . This is a quaint hotel in lovely grounds(although it looks like building work is going to change grounds). Reception was very good and friendly. We had an upgrade to a lovely spacious room with big bathroom. Nicely set out. Only downside was lack of soundproofing between rooms, and noisy pipes whenever neighbours or ourselves used water or toilet. Can walk to city from here, didn't eat on site, as lots to choose from in town. Reasonable price, and car parking on site

    « needs work »

Needs work in your service, your front desk, your menu, your service, your linen, cleansiness and menu. Great premise but very amateur run and too much noise at night. I could hear people talking next door and when i mentioned it next day there was no comment or acknowledgement or compensation. Wouldn't be visiting again, thank God it as only for one night.

    « Family Wedding »

My sister got married here on 18th June, and it was a lovely venue. We had booked several rooms for family use including one for me, my partner and our 3 children. We were allocated a 4 bed family room with the option of a cot ( but our 2 toddlers shared a bed instead so wasnt needed) The room was lovely and plenty big enough for us all, really quiet location, we werent disturbed at all by the late night music ( in fact we had a great time listenig to the Simply Red concert over at the St Lawrence Ground nearby!) All staff were attentive and friendly, nothing seemed too much bother for them. The hotel itself was immaculately clean, the food was great too. The grounds were lovely to walk round and for family photos. Unfortunately my 3 year old son wasnt feeling well with a cold so my partner had to miss the Wedding Breakfast and stayed in our room with him. I asked the hotel staff if the meal could be taking to him in our room and they were only too happy to oblige - he didnt miss a thing - including the champagne and coffee - they took everything up to him which was really great and didnt charge any extra for this. It really did help! The car park isnt huge for events such as weddings but other guests found nearby parking in other residential roads. Looking forward to seeing the extension and Spa built here - and will be back!

« Expensive one night stay »

Stayed 18/June for one night. Only just managed to get a car parking space on arrival as a wedding party was there. Checking in non eventful, room 316 was OK after eventually finding the room but the noise was terrible. We could not only hear every squeaky floor boards all around but snoring from the next room whilst laying in bed. Extremely hot and uncomfortable night, the heating was on and lots of noise late evening with the wedding finishing. We booked room only, no breakfast which as a special non cancellation room booked 6 months in advance was £114.00 basic double room. My advice book elsewhere, extremely expensive for what was a bad nights sleep. There are so many bed & breakfasts in the area we should have booked.

    « two day break »

We arrived a day before my Niece's wedding, in a central location about 5 mins walk from town centre, in spacious grounds, a very popular wedding centre. Having had a long drive to get there we decided to eat in the Hotel restaurant, we selected a two course meal and to be honest it was not the chefs night, The staff could see we were not happy and they on their own initiative contacted the Food and Beverages Manager, who appeared at our table. We had a long and cordial chat and he took the criticisms on board. The accomadation was fine, the staff were extremely attentive and friendly. Upon my Nieces day superb, the wedding breakfast was second to none. and one of the starters we had had the previous night was spot on, as it should have been on the first night. One cannot ask for more.

« Busy with beautiful grounds »

We arrived when there was a large and noisy wedding reception that seemed to have taken the place over. It was very difficult to park the car. No-one took us to our rooms which were hard to find because the place is like a rabbit warren. The room was tight, no fridge but clean and comfortable looking out onto spreading lawns. The breakfast was excellent; huge variety and nicely run.

    3
    « Left us wanting.... »

Our room (108) was facing the backside of the property and there was a huge exhaust duct outside our window which kept making noise and letting out the kitchen's exhaust. Lots of stagnant water collected outside the room which you can see from the window. Service was a bit slow and unresponsive owing to a huge wedding party happening during our stay. Breakfast is not included and quite expensive at 13 pounds. The hotel is quite far from the city centre so don't stay here if you're going to be walking. Overall staff were polite and hotel is clean.

    « WOULD STAY AGAIN »

Stayed here mid-week for 3 nights. We were given a room which had a big air conditioning tube outside. First time ever we have asked to change rooms. The staff were very good and we were very lucky and they found us another room. The hotel itself was beautiful, the pictures along the corridors were wonderful, so much better than modern décor. We dined in the restaurant on 2 occasions. The food was very good. The service was very good. The only criticism I would have is it would have been nice to have a bit of background music playing. Breakfast goes on until 9.30am. We arrived at 9.30am, but the staff seem to have a cut off point of 9.45 and then they clear the breakfast out. They did come and ask if we wanted anything, but we felt very hurried. It would be nice if they could have perhaps 10am as the cut of point and then clear away (would make all the difference). On our last visit to restaurant we asked if we could have a certain table as there was no one sat there and the waitress said no we couldn't, so we were sat next to the doors to the kitchen, which were a bit draughty. Felt a little miffed as the table we asked to sit at nobody sat there at all (I think it was because the clip board with names and reservations on was placed at that table). The staff were very friendly, especially the restaurant manager (well I think she was). When she found out it was our wedding anniversary, she came out with some chocolates and a card (great chocolates). Such a lovely touch. The only other criticism was the pillows (they are too flat and not comfortable - but that is my own personal criticism). All in all the hotel was great and we did have a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend for staying in Canterbury. It was about a 10 min walk into town which was great.

    « Disappointing »

We booked our 3 night stay through secret escapes and apparently we should have paid £143 per night but got a huge discount, which was very attractive. However, if I'd paid the full price, I would been even more disappointed than I was paying the discounted rate. Our bed was so soft, we changed rooms. The manager was so very helpful and understanding but it was inconvenient as we'd unpacked before trying the bed. We decided to eat in at the hotel on the Tuesday evening. When we arrived we were told 70% of the menu was unavailable, but it was far too late for us to go else where. The food was appalling. My baked cod was unseasoned and came with a huge serving of warm potatoe salad and two raspberries! It was inedible....once again the manager was very quick to apologise and explain staff shortage and bank holiday reasons for the lack of menu and quality of food. We filled up on bread and we're just as disappointed at breakfast. I ordered a cheese and veg omelette and have never had an omelette quite like it. We didn't use the restaurant or breakfast again, checked out a day early. Alas, I will think again about discounted offers and certainly not return to a great western hotel.

    4
    « Excellent Hotel »

Am not usually a fan of Best Westerns in the UK as many are quite dated but this hotel was excellent. The grounds are well kept and there is plenty of parking. The building is well maintained and looks fantastic. The staff are very friendly. As I was staying for business they upgraded my room to a quitter one which happened to be bigger and nicer. The rooms are bright and colourfully decorated. The restaurant was fantastic as was the room service. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Canterbury.

« Friendly staff, large, clean family room. »

We just had an overnight stay, but staff were welcoming and friendly and check-in was quick and easy. Our family room was spacious and clean and so was the en-suite. Great location - 10 minutes' walk from the centre. A very pleasant relaxing stay.

« A Relaxing Stay in The Heart of Kent »

From the moment we arrived the Staff were friendly and welcoming and the breakfast was all you could want to set you up for the day. The room was comfortable and all the facilities in good working order and the air conditioning was a welcome bonus. The hotel has loads of character and has a great relaxing feel to it.

    4
    « Very pleasant stay »

Overall a very pleasant stay. Only small issues were car park -very limited spaces, and keeness of staff to clear plates from table at breakfast -often before we had finished eating. Otherwise spacious clean room with attentive staff and located close to city centre. Would recommend.

    « Dated but comfortable »

This hotel has lots of potential but needs some work to get there. It's very well located with parking and an easy walk into town. Our bed was comfortable and clean with a decent sized bathroom. But the decor is very eighties and "busy" - it would seem much bigger and modern with some fresh new decor and furniture. The shower is erratic and hard to control the temperature - a decent power shower would make a big difference. The buffet breakfast is poor with tired offerings that had been kept warm for too long. A cooked to order service with fresh fruit salad and decent tea & Coffee isn't too much to ask. We also found service very slow. We needed a bed for a couple of nights for a family wedding and this did the job but it isn't the place for a romantic getaway or relaxing break.

    « Abbots Barton Wedding reception 21st May 2016 »

We would like to convey our appreciation and thoughts on the wedding reception of my son and his wife at the Abbots Barton Hotel on Saturday 21st May 2016. We must thank you and your staff for all the hard work they put into making my son and his wife's day very special. The rooms we stayed in were lovely, clean and beautiful. A special mention must go to the Toast Master who did an outstanding and very professional job on the day. I must also recommend the registrar staff who conducted the ceremony professionally and helping to make my son and daughter-in-law feel at ease throughout the ceremony. I must just say a very well done to the Maitre d' and her staff for making our dining experience at the wedding breakfast outstanding and very enjoyable, conducting themselves in a very professional and polite friendly manor, An accompanying mention for The wedding singer Peter who was superb and my compliments to the chef, well done. Only the disco a bit of a let down though I'm afraid but did not distract us from having a wonderful day. Magdalena, thanks so much for all your support and help on the run up to my sons wedding. You have shown nothing was too much trouble to ask for and have helped to make this journey as less stressful as possible along the way. Thank you. Del B.

« Good Hotel, Good location »

A very pleasant hotel in an excellent location for the city centre. Quiet location. Very attentive staff and excellent service. Ate in the main restaurant one evening - food good and priced accordingly to the grade of hotel. Pleasant room, and large bathroom. Masses of cupboard & drawer space. Couple of maintenance problems which were sorted after prompting.

    4
    « Clean & helpful »

Late booking, staff very accomodating. We did have a walk through a maze of corridors, but the room was exceptionally comfortable all round. Although this is rated 3* it's closer to a 4* . Would recommend this as a hotel near to the city

    5
    « Excellent Service »

Booked a last minute deal via secret escapes for 1 night bed, breakfast and a two course meal for my birthday. We arrived later than planned due to car problems but phoned ahead to let them know and they were very accommodating. When we did arrive we had a lovely greeting from the reception desk and there was even a birthday card and chocolates on our table when we went down for dinner. The food in the Fountain restaurant was excellent and the service equally so. We have a room on the third floor which was both spacious and comfortable. Had a good nights sleep followed by a tasty breakfast - plenty of choice from fruit, cereals, pastries as well as hot options of egg, bacon etc. Location is perfect for visiting Canterbury on foot being only 10 minute walk into town. All staff were very friendly and helpful and made our short stay really nice - thank you. We look forward to returning and trying out the new spa when it is open.

    « Much More Than a 3 Star Hotel »

We had an opportunity to visit the Abbots Barton Hotel and found a hotel room that was huge by UK standards. The bathroom was also quite large with a rain shower and a jetted tub. The room was relatively quite and the bed, although was a little hard, provided a good sleep. The 12.95 breakfast should be avoided.

    5
« Staff who really care. »

If you like the older style hotel then a great place to stay when visiting Canterbury. Close to the city centre even the one with dodgy knees found the walk manageable. Duty Manager Maria really goes out of her way to make guests welcome and this is reflected by her team. One of the few places we've stayed that gives the feeling the everyone wants to make you welcome and not just front of house staff. To provide a balanced review I have to mention that as with most older places night noises are amplified. Our first night was peace itself but the arrival of a wedding party and their kids meant doors slamming and running up and down corridors till early morning was a nuisance. So if you are a light sleeper mention when booking and they will do their best to look after you. Our room was on the top floor so no noise from above. It was very nicely decorated and comfortable. Bathroom layout was not ideal but let's put that down as part of the charm of an older building. Shower is not thermostatic so beware of those rushes of hot and cold water when other guests turn theirs on and off. But then we had a jacuzzi bath we were not expecting so a good trade off. There is construction work for a new extension at the rear which we overlooked but nothing was happening so no disturbance. But again check when booking if this would be a problem to you. Tried the Fountain restaurant on the first night and enjoyed the food and service. Duck confit well worth trying. Buffet breakfast also good and a fair choice on offer. Bar in the oldest part is a very pleasant place for a drink with a nicely laid out garden area. But can get busy if there is an event on. This is certainly a hotel we want to visit again.

    3
    « Potential »

This hotel looks impressive from a distance. If you are in, you can see it needs some renovation. You can hear the occupants of the room above very well. A bit too much I would say. The quality of the food is quite good but service sometimes a bit slow and strange. E.G we had a table booked at 6.30 PM, arrived at 6.40 and immediately got the message that we would not get our dinner soon because we were too late. For one waitress it took half an hour to get the ordered water at the table, fortunately there was another waitress form Rumania who was very good and understood what hospitality means. This hotel could easily be 4/5 stars if better managed!

« A beautiful old English country hotel in the heart of town. »

We booked this for an Saturday night stay in May. We were upgraded to a suite on arrival which was a great start. The hotel is only 10 minutes walk from the centre of Canterbury. It has a very nice bar area with plenty of tables and outside seating. There was a buffet breakfast with plenty of options. The staff were very friendly. There was only one minor negative point. The car park is small and on Sunday morning just before 9 I got a call from reception asking me to move my car as as there wasn't enough room for a coach to leave. Luckily I was already up and dressed. I would recommend this hotel.

Great place and location. Would recommend any time, if the staff would be better trained. Pity there was a false fire alarm during the early night . The staff did not even apologize and was rather unfriendly. Only where is the perfect place on earth?

    « Very Friendly & Helpful Staff »

We arrived on Sunday 1st May and there Wedding Fayre going on so it was very busy. Our rooms were not quite ready so we left our luggage with the lady at reception who put it in a safe place. We went into town to meet up with our son who had come down from London. When we returned a few hours later we picked our luggage up and went to our room. It was a pleasant room, but rather on the hot side so turned down air conditioning and partially opened windows. Bed was comfortable. My only criticism was the bathroom: whoever designed it must have had very long arms - the loo paper was on the opposite wall! The hotel was about 10-15 minutes straight walk into the main town going under the pedestrian subway. Bus station just on the left hand side as you approach the town. We were on a Living Social which included two nights with evening two course meal included for one of the nights. Very nice meal, we had tomato and basil soup, followed by black bream which was nicely cooked and very tasty. Both mornings was a buffet breakfast which had full English if you wanted. The staff very very friendly and helpful and would highly recommend this hotel to stay if visiting this city.

« Great place to stay »

I have lots of nice things to say about this hotel. The staff were very friendly and the hotel was beautifully clean. It is in a great location for getting into Canterbury ( about a 15 minute walk ) with good parking. Breakfast service was good and the gentleman in charge of breakfast was a delight. It is older in style but do not let that put you off. We paid a premium for a deluxe room and it was spacious and comfortable.

    « A great get-way for short stay »

We had a great trip, about a ten minute walk into town. Hotel was very nice, staff were helpful, food good, good comfortable room with big bed. Would definitely visit there again. We booked through a website network it was great value for the money we paid . The only thing that we were disappointed in, was we wanted to visit the cathedral, but they wanted £10.50 per person, and being pensioners we couldn't justify the cost. But hey ho.

« Brilliant hotel for staying with a dog »

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel last weekend and we can't rate it highly enough especially if you are staying with a fur baby! When we got to our room there was a duvet and two bowels waiting for him, I have never encountered this at a hotel before. Plus dogs were welcome in the bar area and the hotel staff made a fuss of him. The room was a lovely big size with a walk in wardrobe/cupboard so perfect for keeping our cases out of the way. The room was clean and tidy and well decorated. The wifi worked well in the room. Breakfast and dinner was a good selection, we ordered room service on the Saturday night, which was a busy evening at the hotel and the kitchen did forget items off our order, but the manager took my meal off the bill to compensate me for the mistake and I understood the kitchen was under pressure so overall I can't complain about the service offered. The location is perfect as it is only a 10min walk into town and there are lots of lovely independent restaurants and shops in Canterbury to visit. Also Whitstable is worth the trip.

    5
    « Old-fashioned Comfort »

Although a little dated in places, the Abbots Barton is relaxing and the staff are very helpful. Having a jacuzzi bath was a novelty, and the breakfast was excellent value (although I'd appreciate it if some non-fat yogurt could be provided!).

    « Good location »

I was in the hotel from a Sunday night to a Saturday morning on a business trip. The car parking at the hotel was good in that there was always space to park and the spaces were of adequate size. The hotel sits in lovely grounds that are well maintained. The hotel reception was well manned at all times and the staff were friendly. The room was a good size, it was clean but the furnishings were a little old fashioned (which some people might prefer). The room had two windows which opened wide to let in plenty of fresh air (unlike those in most hotels these days). The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was large and it had a Jacuzzi bath which and the shower was nice and powerful with well controlled water temperature. The tv had all the normal freeview channels but sat a bit low for easy watching from the bed. The towel quality was probably the best that I have had in a hotel, they were nice and soft and absorbed plenty of water. The staff at breakfast were nice and very attentive. Breakfast was well laid out and looked and tasted very nice. I did not eat in the hotel at night as it was only a short walk into Canterbury (slight downward gradient into the city) and very walkable which saves on trying to park in the city. Just a short walk down the road was a Tesco express and a Waitrose where food can be bought for lunches. Canterbury was beautiful with lots of restaurants which are very good for night time eating hence I did not use the hotel restaurant. I have struggled to rebook into the hotel as it does get fully booked at times. The only issue I had was that the walls are not very sound proof and I was easily able to hear people talking in the room next to me and the snoring from that room did keep me awake at night! Wifi was available in the room and was easy to connect first time and then it was automatic - you do need to ask reception for the wifi details though.

    « Very relaxing »

We had a short one night stay at this hotel but were very impressed by it. Check-in and out was really easy and friendly and the car parks and facilities were great. We were disappointed that breakfast was an extra. At £90 for a night I would have expected breakfast as well but it was offered as an extra. We didn't order it preferring to go out for a coffee instead. The WiFi offered FOC in the room was really weak and difficult to log into. It was sufferable for one night but I couldn't have put up with it if this was a business trip. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We did not eat at the hotel. The staff were friendly and pleasant. When we left they allowed us to use their car park so we could go shopping until the late afternoon which was much appreciated.

    « Surpassed every expectation! »

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left the hotel we were made to feel like honoured VIPs. The room was generous and comfortable complete with a duvet and bowls for our dog. The food, dinner and breakfast, were tasty and generous. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and everywhere was clean and tidy. Nothing was too much trouble for the charming and considerate staff. They happily set a table complete with starched white linen table cloth in the bar in the bar so our dog could stay with us at meal times. I would highly recommend this hotel and look forward to trying their new leisure facilities next time we go.

« Nice hotel close to city center »

The hotel grounds are well done and the hotel itself is super nice! Our room was fantastic, the bathroom, too! The staff at the bar area were helpful; staff at the front desk were kind of aloof, and didn't really say much to us. Had to ask about the breakfast time - they didn't volunteer any basic information you'd usually get when checking-in. Wi-Fi worked great, showers were hot, bed was comfortable (almost too soft), and the hotel was quite clean. The food at the bar was good, as was breakfast. Plenty of parking and a short walk into town. I'd stay here again.

    5
    « characterful, comfortable hotel »

The hotel is an easy walk to the cathedral and city centre but just far enough out (and set back from the Dover road) that it feels semi-rural. I stayed one night and had bed and breakfast only (as I was slightly deterred from dining in the hotel as it has no window on to the outside and felt a little claustrophobic). The accommodation was comfortable, the staff pleasant, the bar and lounge area atmospheric, and the breakfast very good indeed.

My daughter booked this Hotel for us for one night and it was wonderful, the hotel upgraded our room which was absolutely stunning and the all staff were lovely, We had Dinner and Breakfast in the restaurant, the food was excellent and the staff very helpful and friendly. We would certainly go back to this hotel it is a beautiful building in a nice area a short walk into Canterbury which is a lovely place to visit.

    « Excellent stay »

We stayed on Good Friday and went to a lovely service in the Cathedral, followed by a very pleasant meal at the Fountain Restaurant with our friends. A full breakfast the following morning was provided at 7.30 even though the restaurant wasn't officially open until 8.00, which enabled us to get to our Channel Tunnel crossing at 9.00. Altogether a very accommodating Hotel.

« Ideal location for visiting Canterbury »

Just got back from a 2 night stay at this hotel and enjoyed it very much. When you arrive, the photograph of the hotel with the lawns is the first thing that you see as that is the area between the hotel and the main road, not extensive lawns at the back which is possibly the impression that you would get. There is nothing at the back of the hotel (I don't think) apart from building work where an extension is being built. No problem at the weekend as no work was taking place. We were lucky to find a parking space as I think there are more rooms than parking spaces. Not sure where alternative parking would be but noticed a road opposite without yellow lines otherwise I don't know what you would do. We were greeted warmly at reception and check-in was fuss free. Our room on the top floor in the old part of the hotel, was spacious, clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The bathroom was large with a whirlpool bath with shower over and soft, thick white towels. The shower wasn't great and I did tell them at reception. Water poured out where the hose connected into the head and it couldn't be tightened so this reduced the pressure and it cycled constantly between hot and luke warm. We had paid extra to include breakfast and the small extra cost was well worth it as it was delicious. Plenty to choose from - fruit, cereal, yoghurts, cooked breakfast, toast........My only criticism would be that the restaurant didn't have any windows so it was slightly gloomy and I found it quite hot but it didn't detract from the nice food. The hotel is an easy walk to Canterbury which took about 10 minutes without rushing.

    « Mixed feelings »

Stayed here for Saturday night, as we were attending a function. The welcome, the staff and service are good. We had a pleasant room on the third floor which overlooked the building works. Obviously this was no issue at the weekend but during the week it could be a drawback. Two issues with the room, only one bath towel and one hand towel between us and I have never stayed in a hotel with no bottled water. The food, I gather from friends, was good in the restaurant, as they stayed a second night and had dinner. The meal for the function was poor in my opinion. The breakfast looked quite a good selection, cooked and continental but the tea was awful! Not badly situated for the traveller to enjoy the places of interest but the car parking is limited, I am guessing this may have been reduced by the building works. Not a bad stay but not the best!

    « Lovely hotel »

Stayed Wenesday night for just the one night. Lovely Hotel with very attentive staff. We stayed on a B&B basis so can't comment on the evening food however the breakfast was very nice with continental and English options. The room (317) was very clean and overlooked the building work for the swimming pool, the work was being carried out but did not disturb us at all. My only fault with the room was the shower head kept sliding down the wall but other than that We really enjoyed our stay here and will return. Despite warnings the car park was fine and a few spaces were empty, but this was mid week so can't comment on how busy it would be at the weekends. It took us about 8 mins to walk into the town.

Nice hotel but trouser press didn't work properly and only had 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel didn't ring reception for another because we only noticed when we got out of the bath and needed it. Nice spa bath

« beautiful place to stay in Canterbury »

We stayed one night with two friends, had lovely rooms with comfortable beds, friendly and attentive staff, luxurious breakfast including fresh fruit and juice, granola muesli, full English breakfast, croissants, etc leaving nothing to be desired (breakfast not included in the price, but worth every pound!). You can walk into the centre in less than 15 minutes, it's a lovely walk, too with St. Augustine Abbey on the way which is well worth a visit. The room on third floor we had was nicely furnished but it was kind of noisy. The neighbouring room's TV could be well heard (maybe thin walls?) and as well as footsteps from above. Hence, only three stars on sleeping comfort...our friends sleeping next door, however, didn't have any noise problems and said that they had slept really well. WiFi wasn't always working in our room. Would definitely stay here again, although it's not cheap, and can recommend this hotel especially to couples who want to spend a particularly romantic weekend.

    « Very good experience, only ... »

Price was good, location also, the building, lobby, breakfast areas with character, service excellent in the breakfast. I would only review the policy to charge for the newspaper that's offered in the check-in form. I have never seen that. At a minimum to indicate that it will be charged.

« Charming, Comfortable, Delightful Staff »

Charming and comfortable Water in the shower was hot and cold Couldn't drink water from the taps Dated but cute decor Staff on reception and bar lovely Walls thin - could hear everything of the neighbours Grounds not as big as they look in the pictures but nice little rural ish part close to the town In the pictures and the old castle looking part is very small most of it is newer Bed very comfortable but two doubles put together rather than king mattress No tissues or mini bar in the room No veggie options on the bar menu No limes for drinks, no pigeon as advertised on the menu restaurant hot but nice setting relaxed Staff nice set up another table for us to give us more space Jamie the waiter was the only staff member who was consistantly rude, and disappointing. Instead of "would you like to see the dessert menu" we got "you want a dessert" and at the end "sign here and you are free to leave" me - "is this a prison" laughs (obviously being playful), him "well I need to get paid" me "well there goes your tip". Just unnecessary. All the other staff bent over backwards for us, we avoided Jamie. Breakfast ok but no veggie sausages Italian older gentlemen really sweet and welcoming and chatty Lady on the bar Maria really lovely and the restaurant manager Aura, and reception staff Kitchen busy so bar menu suffered toasted goats cheese and pesto bloomer on brown bread no pesto and not toasted with salad instead of tomatoes and pesto (who makes a toastie with salad in it?) Aura was great, and offered us a drink to apologise and ran off to tell off the chefs! Nice hotel but some staff issues and quality control issues,

« Comfortable, calming and peaceful. »

Looking around the breakfast room it is no surprise that the majority of guests are of a certain age. This place offers plenty of peace and quite. The staff are attentive but not so much that they become intimidating, which is a real skill. The room prices are also good considering it is only 10-15 minutes walk from the cathedral. All in all, this hotel is not a bad choice. Some fairly major building work was under way. In fact, it was happening right outside my window. It sounds like the end product will be quite impressive and include a business centre, swimming pool, new rooms, etc. if it is all in keeping with the existing style of the hotel it should be a winner.

    « Weekend away »

Stayed for two nights. Staff were very attentive. Food was stunning, plenty of choice. Surprised how diverse the menu was. Lots of selection at breakfast . Loved the sausages. The mini Easter eggs were a nice touch. Easy to find from A2. So close to the city, very good value will definitely come back. Bed so comfortable. If I had to be picky - car park too small.

    « A perfect choice of hotel! »

We spent two nights at this hotel to celebrate a very special anniversary; on arrival we were greeted with a genuinely warm welcome at reception whilst a card and box of chocolates awaited us in our room. The breakfasts were excellent, both in range of choice and quality, the perfect start to the day. We ate in the restaurant on the second evening and could not fault our meal nor the service. It was good to be able to just leave the car in the hotel car park as the City Centre was only about a 15 minute easy walk away. Apart from everything else, the hotel's biggest asset is its staff, everyone was absolutely wonderful and treated us with a natural friendliness and courtesy without being in any way patronising. They are the very epitome of customer service! This was our first visit to Canterbury, we will certainly be returning and staying at this hotel! A major extension programme is about to start - while this will result in enhanced facilities we just hope that it doesn't result in reduction of 'the personal touch' which the hotel currently enjoys. Thank you all for making our weekend so special!

    « Bit dated »

Room was a little dated, however it was spotless. The food was very nice, although not enough vegtables for me. Breakfast was not very nice at all! The sausage was like sawdust, and no beans. My husband loves beans.

« Lovely stay and really friendly staff. »

Easy to find hotel very close to all amenities in Canterbury. Lady at reception was very welcoming. She had up-graded our room as it was our anniversary. Efficient check in despite the really noisy group that arrived behind us who obviously had never heard of using their 'in-side voice'. Reception asked us if we wanted to book for dinner but we didn't like the limited choice so declined. Lovely room, spotlessly clean. The staff had left us an anniversary card and small box of chocs, lovely touch. The hotel was noisy in the evening, some sort of function going on downstairs but upstairs in the room we couldn't hear it. Nice breakfast and staff were attentive despite it being very busy. Would definitely return.

« LOVELY HOTEL WITH GREAT STAFF »

We booked two nights at this hotel and were very impressed. Hotel rooms are very nice with a comfortable bed, nice bathroom and large television. The staff at this hotel are extremely helpful and very well trained. We had a set menu dinner on the first night which was good and the second night we had something to eat in the Bar. The set menu is good but not enough thought given to people who do not like too much meat. There was only one vegetarian option. It would have been nice if the set menu had been changed for the second night. The bar food was very good and plenty of it! Overall this hotel is lovely and I would not hesitate to stay there again. Thank you to all staff who made our stay enjoyable.

    « Better than expected! »

Stayed at the hotel overnight with my partner. The hotel was easy to find and very close to local amenities, with a Tesco Express and some other shops about five minutes walk down the road. Another five minutes and you're crossing over into the city centre and the shopping area. The cathedral and other attractions are signposted throughout the area. Arrived around 2pm on a Saturday and parked up in one of the few spaces left in the free car park. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist. Check in was quick and easy and we were directed to our room which was on the ground floor. The room was adequately equipped and the decor was traditional but the bedhead and feature wall more contemporary. Both the room and bathroom were clean and well maintained. Be aware that one set of towels is stored in one of the drawers in the desk. Our room was located next to the building site where the hotel is currently building an extension. Whilst not a pretty sight but I suppose unavoidable, it was quiet since was the weekend. Not sure if you would want this room on a weekday if you were going to stay inside and rest. Something to ask the hotel about. We had dinner in the restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised, as it was much better than I expected. I ate from the set menu which was reasonably priced and had a nice selection. My partner had a mixture from the fixed and a la carte menu (mains around £20.00). Food was attractively presented and was very tasty. My venison was perfectly cooked and my partner enjoyed his lamb, although I did have to give him my potato. Some people may want to order an additional side of vegetables. We were both full and didn't have dessert. I think the meal came to around £64 with wine and water. Service was efficient and friendly. Breakfast was the usual buffet affair but I would have like a wider choice of fruit such as berries but that was no biggie, as I was full by the end of it. All in all, a nice stay and we would probably return if staying in Canterbury.

    « Great stay »

Hotel just as it should be, welcoming, warm, comfy bed, good food, attentive staff, handy for town, if I was being very picky the shower, although quite acceptable, was not up to the high standard of everything else.

    « Fabulous Food »

Have just returned from an overnight stay deal which I got through Wowcher. Arrived at the hotel around midday to be checked in smoothly and earlier than what was expected. Room very clean & pleasant, good selection of toiletries, comfy bed and tea & coffee facilities. Service in the restaurant was outstanding, very attentive & polite & friendly. The food was excellent, hats off to the chef. Presentation, quality of the food and cooked to perfection. Would definitely stay here again & would recommend it!!

« Country House Hotel in the Town »

Spent Saturday and Sunday in this fine old hotel just 100yds from the city walls of Canterbury. An excellent location for visiting the cathedral. We had a very nice room up on the top floor overlooking the town. Well fitted out with a Jacuzzi bath and the best fitting, light blocking blinds I have ever experienced in a hotel. So good we slept on in the dark till 0930 on the Sunday morning. The staff were excellent. Always courteous and helpful. Also they didn't have the infuriating modern habit of swooping over whilst you are still eating and asking if everything is all right. Why not wait until we have finished eating and then we can tell? The public areas are comfortable and warm. Great big soft sofas and chairs in the bar where you can spend a happy Sunday afternoon reading the papers, drinking Gin and Tonic and eating steak sandwiches. Gets my vote. The restaurant has a fuss free menu of modern British food, excellently cooked and served by helpful, friendly staff (as above). The breakfast selection is impressive. Full English to full continental with a range large enough to satisfy the most picky of eaters. Even down to fresh baked home made bread and not a baked bean in sight. That's a good thing. Believe me.

« Beautiful hotel, pity about the bed »

Beautiful hotel with gorgeous decor. Walk into the centre not too far. Staff are really nice. If you like showers rather than baths you may need to check when booking as not all rooms have showers. I was first put in a suite without one then they moved me to suite 102. This room was lovely and the shower was wonderful. Unfortunately the mattress was far too soft. I can sleep in soft beds but this one was just too soft and I didn't have a very good night. When I mentioned it to reception during check out they said it can be rectified. Breakfast was nice. Parking was no problem on a Thursday night in off season. I would imagine that on weekends it might be busy though with wedding guests. Free WIFI was available but you had to sign into a server with all your personal information which would be used for marketing purposes. Not something I would like to do so I didn't use their WIFI. TV remote batteries were flat and by the time I noticed I didn't want to go down to reception to get new ones.. Overall though a nice hotel. If it wasn't for the uncomfortable mattress I would have given this hotel an excellent rating. Would I stay at this hotel again? I would love to as the minor things didn't bother me, but the mattress would need to be a lot better...

« Brilliant value, great staff »

Great location just outside centre of Canterbury. Hotel has an old fashioned charm throughout. Our room on the third floor was very cosy. You could hear some noise from the next door rooms (TV mainly) so perhaps pack some earplugs if that bothers you. There's a pleasant bar and lounge areas - would be even nicer if one of the fireplaces worked. Breakfast was OK: plentiful and varied although the team did seem super keen to clear it away! Despite this they and all the staff were very friendly and pleasant. Would recommend, particularly if you can get one of the voucher deals like we did.

    « Very friendly »

We had an over night stay as part of a Travelzoo deal. The hotel is well located to explore Canterbury (within walking distance) and the wider area. Canterbury is such a lovely place to stay. The rooms was nicely finished, very clean and had a nice big tv. The extractor fan (from the kitchen) was a bit noisy, but did go off about 21:30. The gothic part of the hotel is attractive and there is a huge lawn to the front. Both the evening meal and the breakfast were very nice. The menu for the evening meal had a good selection. A great value deal. The best thing about the whole stay was the staff, who were friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Would recommend and stay again.

« Mother's Day trip, visit to the ballet. »

I travelled to Canterbury with my mother who is 87 years. We went to the ballet together in the afternoon. Arrived Early before rooms ready but staff very considerate and had room completed so we could go in and rest and get ready. All staff , front reception, bar staff, restaurant in the evening and breakfast were exceptionally respectful and friendly. Our evening meal was lovely and breakfast was perfect for us. Ranging from fresh fruit, natural , fruit yoghurt, nuts and hot breakfast. Definitely not slow service for us.

« Very friendly personal service »

We stayed for one night for my daughters graduation. The hotel is 10 mins walk from the city centre and it has parking. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had our evening meal at the hotel and it was excellent, one of our party is vegan and they could not have been more attentive to her needs. The staff had written a congratulations card and chocolates on the table a lovely touch. All in all a comfortable hotel with nice staff.

« Lovely mid week break! »

We stayed here for two nights on a Living Social deal. This included breakfasts and dinner on the first night. The breakfasts were excellent - there was a great choice and everything was cooked and served to a high standard. One of the good things about a Best Western hotel is that you can have a breakfast cooked to order - one morning I had the smoked haddock and poached eggs - delicious! Staff were very attentive - empty plates were cleared away immediately and unobtrusively.Dinner was excellent also - very high standard of cooking which was imaginatively presented. The barman made excellent Irish coffees which he brought to our table. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. All the staff were extremely polite and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. Also the location is great - only a 10 minute walk into the centre of Canterbury .

« Comfortable, pleasant staff, but very slow service »

This was my base for a business trip to Canterbury. This is a comfortable hotel with a traditional, some might say dated, feel. Hotel staff were courteous and helpful. Service in the hotel restaurant was very slow, too slow, all three nights of my stay. The sense I had was that this was a kitchen issue. It might not be a problem to wait about an hour for food on a holiday break, but on a business trip with work to do, it is. The meal still arrived late after the team phoned through a simple order earlier in the day so that we could eat promptly. With plans to open a conference centre and building work going on currently, this may be something management wants to address. Front of house staff asked for my feedback and I made the same points to her. Overall, a comfortable hotel, with pleasant staff.

    « Very pleasant stay!! »

My boyfriend booked this hotel as a two night weekend getaway and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly and extremely accommodating. On our second night, we'd been out for dinner in the town centre which is only a short walk from the hotel and it was fairly late; we'd asked if they could make us a coffee- they had turned their coffee machine off but the guy behind the gentleman behind the desk was more than happy to go and get us a small jug of fresh milk so that we could make coffee in our room. If I was to criticise anything there it would be that their wine selection at the bar is fairly minimal and the bottles of white are left out on the bar so aren't particularly cold but this is a minor point! Would definitely recommend this hotel to other weekend revellers!!

    « Weekend »

We stayed her for a weekend. We were placed on the 2nd floor. Almost immediately as we came through the door we heard a steady hum and the people in the floor above us walking up and down. We phoned reception and asked if we could be moved. Within 10 ,mins the duty manager was at our door. Very polite but there were no rooms available... Wedding! He did say the extractor fan would be of by 11pm and that we would delay it starting again but couldnt help with the ceiling noise. If you do go to this hotel ask for the 3rd floor. The Restaurant was really lovely. The staff could not do enough. I would go to this hotel again. It's about a 7 min walk from the city centre.

Very easy to find pleasant help full staff , the lady on reception l reccomend for a best western award for her kindness. « Fantastic stay »

Like many others, our stay at the Abbots Barton was purchased through wowcher for a very reasonable price and included dinner on one of the nights. You're always a bit anxious that you'll be treated differently due to this, but we received some of the best service we've ever experienced on this trip! The staff are wonderful, always smiling and genuinely more than happy to help make your stay a more pleasant one. I mentioned when booking that we were staying for our anniversary and on arrival found that we had been upgraded to a deluxe room! Not only that, but as we sat down to dinner that evening the team had left us a card and some chocolates before one of the managers personally came over to give her best wishes. Little things like this are what elevates this hotel above others and I hope these traits are not lost when they complete their expansion. The food we had in the restaurant was lovely, a good choice available and cooked to perfection. This is a proper restaurant, not an add-on to the hotel. Breakfast was equally impressive, if a little over-crowded. I Imagine the expansion will resolve this issue, but the great selection of hot food, cold food, pastries and fresh fruits/nuts more than made up for it. Our room was very spacious and the bed was perfect, so comfy. Extremely clean throughout and no problem with noise. The hotel's location is also great for exploring Canterbury, park the car and then forget about it, everything is in walking distance. Many thanks for a pleasant and memorable stay.

    « A Great Weekend »

We were a party of four friends who stayed on a two night weekend deal. The hotel had charm and character and was spotlessly clean. The staff very friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for you. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening and the food was delicious as were the buffet breakfasts. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the town centre and there is a park and ride just up the road for those that would prefer to be dropped off ! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Canterbury Thank you to all concerned for making our stay so enjoyable.

    « A delightful stay »

We had a three night stay with breakfast included - good value for money. The twin bedroom was clean and well proportioned withe very comfortable beds. We had dinner in The Fountain restaurant on the first night which was very good if somwhat short on vegetables. The breakfast each morning was excellent with a wide choice of both hot and cold food. The cooked items were regularly replenished so that you never had food that had been sitting for long. The waiter service was excellent being both friendly and efficient . Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit Canterbury and the surrounding area. It is an easy 10 minute walk into the centre of town where there is plenty to both do and see.

« Why go anywhere else? »

We have just returned from a weekend in Canterbury where we stayed at the Best Western. The decor is period and that is a nice touch, rather than have the bland, corporate beige and grey that you get elsewhere. We upgraded to an executive room which I would recommend. They are bright and airy with plenty of room, skylight Windows. Just be careful of the bath. They could be lethally slippery, but do have handrails. We had 2 breakfasts and a dinner and I have to say the food was excellent. We had some dietary requirements which were covered completely to our satisfaction. Thanks chef. Finally, the best part of our stay without a doubt were the staff. To a man, (and woman) they were polite, courteous and could not do enough for us. From reception to the waiters and waitresses in the bar and restaurant. Your helpfulness and kindness is what will make us return, as well as recommend the hotel every time. Thanks. (Just an example, we went out one evening and Phil in the bar saved us the only space all 8 of us could sit together. Great forward thinking and customer service). If I had a gripe of any description, the car park is not well designed and could have limited spaces if there is a function as there is nowhere else to park nearby!!

« lovely so that we weekend »

rang the day before arrival and asked for a room on the ground floor, no problem arrived on Friday with 2 other friends and they juggled rooms around so that we were next door to each other. The staff couldn't do enough to help extremely friendly and cheerful. Room was very clean lovely stay would definitely go again.

    « Pretend you don't have a credit card »

We booked a night away on a Woucher deal. £90 for the room, Dinner (inc' a glass of wine) and breakfast plus an extra £10 for Saturday night. We arrived early as we had heard on Tripadvisor of building work and short availability of car parking spaces. Even at about 11.30 am the car park was almost full, but we parked up and checked with reception that it was OK to leave the car there. We were checked in and our credit card details taken (for extras). We didn't mind this as we had no intention of charging anything to our room. We'd rather pay cash at the bar if necessary. All was good as we trotted off on the 10 minute walk into town. On our return a few hours later the car park was full but that didn't matter to us as we checked in and went to our room. The room was very well decorated with good fixtures and fitting. Good water pressure in the bathroom and a good supply of hot water. I have to say that, as an obsessive bathroom cleaner at home, this was the cleanest bathroom I've ever seen in a hotel. WiFi is provided by "the cloud" so if you already have an account you get straight on. If not just sign up for a free one. Just be aware that there are certain restrictions on what sites you can access via the cloud. Not the hotel's fault. Reasonable signal in our room. Good sized Samsung TV in the room with all the usual freeview channels. We found the bed to be rather hard. On to dinner. The waiter knew exactly the deal we were on and suggested the sensible choice would be the set 2 course meal for £18.50. Not many choices but it was absolutely lovely. This was probably the best food I have ever eaten in a hotel. Not much of it but we are not big eaters anyway. Quality over quantity. Congratulations to the Chef !!! We were really living the high life ! We had a "free" glass of wine in with the deal and we always intended to "play the game" and buy a bottle with dinner so we ordered a bottle of the £16 (Cheapest) white on the menu. It was OK, probably about £3.99 in a supermarket but that's what you expect in a hotel. We could have asked for the £20 one and got one worth £4.99 but we didn't want to show off. On arrival back at home we checked the credit card bill , which should have been an extra £10 for Saturday plus £16 for wine. It was £30. They had charged us for a £20 bottle of wine ! We explicitly asked for a bottle of the £16 one. I know it's only a £4 difference but it's the dishonesty I object to. We were not even informed of extra charges at reception on checking out. I was under the impression that companies are not allowed to just take whatever they want without issuing a bill !!! For the sake of an extra £4 profit this hotel has dropped 2 stars on a Tripadvisor. I hope it's worth it Abbots Barton and Best western. As an advisory last note to travellers, If a pretty Eastern European asked for your credit card details in the street or over the phone would you give it to them ? No, so why would you if they were sitting behind a hotel reception desk ?

« excellent for cathedral visit »

every member of staff was both professional and polite. the hotel is within easy walking distance of the Cathedral as well as the city centre and various other attractions. we found the food and service exceeded our expectations. we will certainly recommend to friends and family

« Nice hotel, nice staff »

We picked this hotel because it was listed as pet friendly however I rang them before hand just to check as sometimes that just means you can have your pet in your room. However here dogs are welcome throughout the hotel except in the restaurant which I quite agree with. An added bonus is the grounds which are smaller than quoted on the website due to building expansion but a nice lawn for early morning/ late night exercise. It's just a pity that not all dog owners clean up after their dogs. We found the staff to be very pleasant and they couldn't do enough for us. A special mention has to go to Phil in the bar and Awra (probably spelt that wrong!) in the restaurant who were both ever so helpful and friendly. Food in the restaurant was excellent as was the bar food. As a beer drinker I was disappointed that there was no real ale but I made do with bottles for the five days I was there. The rooms were clean as was the whole hotel and we had no trouble parking even though the hotel was busy as it was half term. It's an easy walk into the city which has a lot to offer but not many dog friendly pubs. There is quite a bit of building work going on but we never noticed it and were not disturbed by it at all.

    « A very pleasant stay »

We had a midweek stay and I upgraded to the superior room overlooking the garden. Room 103. This is the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in..very high standards. The staff were all friendly, professional and refreshingly individual. Dinner was good but my steak was not cooked as I had requested,my complaint was dealt with efficiently with an apology and complimentary glass of wine. The breakfast choice and quality were also very good. Parking was easy and as stated it is a 10 min walk to Canterbury.

« No better than expectations »

Stayed here for two nights and we were upgraded to a Superior Room on arrival. The room was okay nothing special, but was very clean. The pillows were not comfortable and were hard, and we found it difficult to get a good nights sleep. Although it must be said a lot of other Hotels pillows are in similar vain. The Hotel was convenient for Canterbury and the Reception staff were friendly.

« A pleasant stroll to the city centre from anything but a city centre hotel. »

A fascinating architectural delight greeted us as we arrived on Friday for a weekend break. Parking was OK because we had arrived mid afternoon and some spaces were available. By the evening every space was taken with cars parked all over the place. Spaces are tight for anything larger than a Fiesta sized car. Those arriving from Chelsea in a tractor would be well advised to come by train! To be fair there is some extensive building taking place and maybe this explains the lack of parking and I do hope the enlarged facilities will include more parking. Talking of the building work, our room overlooked this and thankfully, as it was a weekend, there was no noise. If I was staying during the week I may be asking for a room on the other side of the hotel. The entrance and reception are welcoming though of the two receptionists one was clearly more service oriented than the other. "What's the name?" Mrs SG was asked, politely yet with no eye contact as the lady turned towards the computer screen. The other receptionist was dealing with another guest at the time yet I could see she had noticed both our reactions. As soon as she had finished with the other guest she performed a brilliant service recovery and took over our check-in with an engaging and professional approach. The room was very comfortable and clean with all the usual facilities. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice and on the second morning, we had the opportunity to observe a master class in restaurant waiting staff supervision. I think the gentleman's name is Pietro. The experience was akin to watching a great conductor at the Proms! As far as location is concerned, this hotel is perfectly situated being a 10 minute stroll from the city centre so you get a country hotel experience without the long drive to civilisation!

« If you're visiting Canterbury consider staying here. »

We stayed here for two days, once I parked the car (for free) it stayed in that space until we left on Sunday morning. From the hotel to the centre of Canterbury is an easy 15 minute walk/stroll with the Cathedral in view for most of the journey. The hotel itself was clean and cosy. The staff were very friendly, helpful and cheerful, what more could you ask? Our room was number 225, which was a bit of a trek from the lift, it was quicker to use the staircase. The room was a reasonable size with a walk in wardrobe, if there was a down side to it, it was the view of the extension being built next to our wing of the hotel, but there was no work being done while we were there, so it wasn't a problem. The bathroom was clean and newish, the shower could be more powerful, but to be honest I thought it was all very reasonable for what I wanted. All in all I was very pleased with the hotel and staff and not only would I recommend it to friends and family but I already have. We paid £220 for two nights without breakfast, this was £12.50 per person extra, we were not bothered about it too much as we walked into the city and ate there. We did have an evening meal in the hotel, which was excellent, 3 courses for £22 I think, maybe the main course could have been bigger, but we both enjoyed it.

« enjoyable few days away »

This was a living social offer. Booking was easy and stress free. Was offered other dates as original dates hotel was full. Checking in was welcoming and friendly, room very comfortable, clean and tidy. We had a free upgrade. Food was excellent and so was the service. There was renovation works going on but you would never have known this.

« great place for a trip to canterbury »

We have just returned from a 2 night stay on a travelzoo voucher. The situation of the Abbots Barton Hotel couldnt be better just a short stroll to the centre of Canterbury. Our room was lovely and our dog was welcomed. The staff were friendly and very professional. The food was lovely .Altogether a perfect way to spend a few days away

« Clean, Comfortable and Very Welcoming »

Stayed as part of a Travel Zoo deal, two nights bed and breakfast with dinner on the first night for £130 which was great value. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and professional and really enhanced our stay (with the exception of a tall, large, gentlemen maybe in his thirties who was on duty at breakfast on Thursday morning (18th Feb) he was miserable and lacked any customer service skills - thankfully as all the other staff are so nice you can ignore one bad apple but management may want to have a word). The food in the restaurant was excellent both in the evening and at breakfast. The room was spotless and very comfortable. Really easy walk into Canterbury about 10 mins and it was great to not have to get in the car! Highly recommend. Would definitely stay again.

« Must go and stay at the Abbots Barton Hotel Canertbury »

Went to the Abbots Barton as an anniversary & birthday treat. When we walked into the hotel we were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who told us we had been ungraded, so that was a nice surprise. The room was really lovely and very clean in fact the hotel was immaculate. We were greeted at the restaurant for dinner that night by extremely friendly staff who had put chocolates & card onto our table. All the staff from the bar, housekeeping, receptionists & restaurant staff made us feel so special. I have recommended the Abbots Barton to my friends and will most definitely be returning back. Well done

    « Amazing staff »

The best thing about this hotel are the staff. They are amongst the friendliest, attentive, efficient and hard working of any of the hotels that I have stayed. The food in the restaurant is presented very well although some of the dishes could have done with a side dish of vegetables. Breakfast is buffet style and has everything that is wanted, cooked very well. The rooms are typical hotel rooms but are very clean.

    « Wowcher Offer - Faultless Experience! »

Stayed with my wife 15.02.16 - on my birthday, using a Wowcher offer, which included a complimentary glass of wine each, breakfast and a late check-out. Cannot fault the stay whatsoever, reception staff very welcoming and helpful, staff in restaurant extremely attentive and polite. The hotel is excellently situated, we walked into Canterbury town within 10 minutes. As my wife had phoned ahead to mention that we were staying for a birthday, we were kindly upgraded to the bridal suite which was a stunning room, and a birthday card and chocolates were left in our room for when we arrived, which was a great touch. Excellent facilities in the room, cleaned to a very high standard. Breakfast was also very good - plenty of choice whether you wanted the cooked or continental option (or both). We would certainly stay here again, and would highly recommend the hotel to family and friends.

    5
    « Fantastic hotel »

My partner and I stayed for two nights . We didn't eat in the hotel as Canterbury has so much to offer but we did have a few drinks in the bar and was served for a very pleasant bar man .The reception staff were really helpful and friendly. The hotel is a 15 minute walk for the city centre as ideally located. I would recommend this hotel as its very clean and really great value for money.

    « Highly recommend »

Just back from a two night weekend break at this hotel. It is very nicely located a ten - fifteen minute walk from the Cathedral, shops etc. Lovely hotel, nice comfortable room with tea/coffee making facilities etc. Our package included breakfast each morning which was outstanding. So many choices and all items were good quality. We also ate in the restaurant one evening and we were pleasantly surprised at how inviting and intimate it was, and again the food was extremely good. All the staff we encountered during our stay were efficient, helpful, friendly and chatty particularly the restaurant staff who made us feel very relaxed and welcome. I must make a particular mention of Pietro who was present at breakfast both mornings - he made breakfast even more of a pleasure. The high street is very picturesque with tudor buildings and cobbled alleyways. There are also plenty of eateries but make sure you visit the Cathedral which is stunning and really interesting historically. All in all this hotel and Canterbury is an excellent choice and we hope to return soon.

    « Excellent weekend »

Very friendly staff. Clean, well appointed, excellent food. Would recommend. From the moment we arrived to our checkout at reception we were made to feel so welcome I just can't explain how friendly all the staff were .... even the house keeping staff made a fuss of you which is not always the case in most hotels. The food was fantastic with a good selection they even made me some cheese & biscuits which wasn't on the menu ! Breakfast was awesome with so much to choose from loved it !!! Worth every penny .....take a trip to a proper hotel like this and you won't be disappointed

    « Fortieth Anniversary getaway »

The grounds are lovely and memorable and the staff polite, however...we felt we were treated like the 'poor relations' tucked up in a small room with only view of demolition. Wallpaper pieced like a patchwork quilt in areas and the only access to charge our phone was on the floor next to the front door. Area was so small that there was no room for even a chair with which to place my mobile as it would block bathroom entrance. We decided to celebrate in style in their beautifully stained glass dining area awaiting elegant and romantic ambience to match the elegant lobby. The music was so loud and intrusive..hardly romantic that I could hardly hear my husband's voice without shouting. Dinner was served. Service was good and servers attentive. Plates were brought in while being told to take care as plates were hot...Food was not! Disappointed could not cover it. I sent my order back and by the time it returned my husband (who decided to eat his cold) was finished. We were offered coffee and dessert and an apology. I wish I could say it made things better...We still had to travel far and wide back to our little room for the night. Won't be returning. Staff, you did your job. Owners of this establishment: You shame your staff to do the best they can. You did not do yours. Recommend new chefs.

    « Very Nice »

The location is just fine being 15 minutes walk to the city edge. The room was fine clean etc, and the staff helpful, Now breakfast , possibly one of the best ever at any hotel yes it's buffet style but always hot and quality ingredients. Special thanks to Pietro who's style and attention could grace any restaurant anywhere.

    « Great place »

What a great hotel! Booked as a pre Valentines break for my wife and I using a Living Social deal so wasn't sure what to expect, although all the recent reviews were positive. On arrival we were welcomed warmly and told that we had been upgraded to a suite, which was great, although the only down sides to the whole stay related to the suite. Firstly because we could clearly hear voices from people at Reception, which was directly below the room, and the fact that the only way to use the shower was by kneeling in the bath; however, very minor complaints and definitely wouldn't stop us going back. The staff are all fantastic and genuine in their desire for people to have a great stay and the food is great- we had an evening meal as part of the package and the choices we had were perfectly adequate and the quality (and service) excellent and the breakfast sausages are enough of a reason to return by themselves! Don't delay, book today- although we went during the week so might not be as good when full and especially when a function is on.

« Excellent service and hotel »

Well after normally staying down the road in the Abode, Canterbury, I would strongly recommend this hotel for staff friendliness and personality. Phil (The Barman) was always at hand to ensure the beer was flowing, Maria and all other staff always very helpful. Would recommend meeting Jawad, interesting gentleman with a lot of experience of the world. Food is great value and superb in taste! Approx 5-10 minute walk to the centre of Canterbury, superb location and team! Will probably be back next week.

    5
    « What a great stay »

This hotel is lovely, but the jewel lies in the staff - we were looked after so well. Maria, Aura, the South African chef and indeed all the staff were excellent. Bedroom was very comfortable, the decoration was in good condition. The cuisine is superb - we didn't need to eat mid-day. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the hotel was definitely worth a visit.

    « Relaxing Break »

We've just had a super 3 days at Abbots Barton Hotel. Arriving on Sunday & were greeted with the news we'd been upgraded to the Executive Suite, which was a great surprise. We were made to feel welcome in all areas of the hotel especially the restaurant where Maria couldn't have been any more accomadating. We will definitely be recommending this hotel to our friends, the location is so convenient to Canterbury with just a 10 minute walk to the centre so meant we didn't have to drive anywhere. Many thanks to you all for a lovely stay.

« Perfect location for sightseeing »

We took advantage of a special offer and stayed for 2 nights. The staff were not just polite but seemed genuinely interested in us and wanted to engage in conversation. A great credit to the hotel. The rooms were very comfortable and quiet and lovely hot showers with plenty of water. All four of us chose a different 'included' evening meal and all were very good but breakfast .... wow ... an amazing buffet spread of everything you could want. The fresh fruit was delicious and the cooked options perfect. Thank you all.

« excellent rooms and superb service »

We took advantage of an offer, overnight stay on a Friday evening. Having stayed as a group of friends who regularly meet up and have stayed in several hotels over the years, this one is easily rated as excellent. The room was exceptionally clean, beautiful classic decor and very comfortable. The price included an evening meal, also first class and an all you could eat breakfast, also delicious. We had a delightful stay, will be highly recommending to all our friends and definitely returning.

Amazing price, was expecting the place to be 'okay', but the building was lovely and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Really felt at home and comfortable. The rooms were clean and the beds were amazing, slept beautifully! Would definitely recommend this hotel, and I will be booking again when I return to Canterbury!

    « A wonderful surprise. »

For the price we paid I was expecting average and had a wonderful surprise the moment we walked into this hotel. The reception staff were friendly and efficient. We booked three rooms and all were spacious and spotless. The attention to detail was prominent everywhere. We had an evening meal chosen from the set menu which offered a good variety of dishes. We all agreed this was the best hotel we have stayed in.

    « A little treasure »

Stayed for one night with a group of friends on a Travel Zoo offer. If you are thinking of making a booking, I can't recommend highly enough. The whole place was spotlessly clean and the staff couldn't be more helpful. Great location, really close to the centre of Canterbury with no charge for car parking. Thanks Abbots Barton, we'll be back soon.

« It was all good........!!!!!!!!!! »

We went to this hotel as thought it seemed good value for money and that the reviews seemed good for a chain hotel. On arrivalGothic meets not so old building, the gothic side of things are very nice to the eye, the newer building is quite bland.the car park is fairly large and it's free. The reception was manned by two lovely and helpful staff, they could not do enough for us. Check in was fast and easy. We were given Room 103. A most wonderful room in the old gothic part of the hotel . It was large and I mean large, it had a sitting room in the tower area and a large bathroom. All the areas were well equipped and very very clean. I have never been to such a clean and tidy room in a hotel in the UK like this one, well done to the house keeping lady. We had meals at the hotel, these were also really tasty and very well presented, the staff were helpful and new about the food on the menu service was great and all went like clockwork, the restaurant was tidy, clean and had a lovely atmosphere. We had both breakfast and dinner in it. I will be honest to say we had no problems at all and were very pleased that we chose the hotel as a place not only to stay but also to eat. Well done to everyone for a wonderful two nights. Now would we go there again....... Yes 100% Would we eat there again......... Yes 100% Would we recommend it .... Yes we would.

« Top notch 3 Star plus hotel »

Spent a night here whilst on business in Canterbury and could not fault it. It's ideally positioned within easy walking distance of the town. The staff were all very friendly and showed a genuine interest in customers. The room was a good size, clean but maybe a little dated in its decor. I had the set dinner menu which was very good and far surpassed the 3 Star hotel tag. The good local ales proved a good accompaniment to dinner. Breakfast was also great and the sausages were particularly good! Would definitely return again.

« Best Western Abbots Barton »

Yes it is a five star quality hotel. Pricey but access to town centre is first class and is a little haven of luxury. Good parking and superb food. A little expensive ; yes but good value for money. Cantebury is a nightmare for the tourist with a car so if you want to spend a couple of nights exploring Cantebury and you can afford this hotel then i can recommend it. If you want to explore the countryside a hotel outside the town centre would be better.

« Abbots Barton Hotel, Canterbury »

Very good hotel. We were upgraded to a deluxe room. It was lovely. Warm, spacious and retained it's traditional style. Quiet location as well. We stayed in Room 103. Perhaps could have installed a proper shower but we managed for 1 night. Breakfast was ok. Lovely staff too. Overall, very satisfied!

    « Very good 3* hotel »

Having recently stayed for one night I find it very difficult to find fault with the hotel. It is within a five minute walk of Canterbury city centre. The hotel has a nice frontage and reception is welcoming. The standard bedroom was clean and a decent size with a good sized bathroom. Dinner in the restaurant was very nice served by pleasant staff as was the full English breakfast. I would definitely stay again. However, there is a substantial amount of refurbishment going on outside which wasn't busy at the weekend but may be an issue during the week.

    « Noise! »

Stayed for one night on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal. Hotel very clean and staff lovely. Food and service at dinner and breakfast excellent. However, the walls are paper thin to the point where you can hear every word spoken in the room next door. The floors creak so badly that even someone walking normally across their room or down the corridor makes the whole room vibrate, but the worst thing were the extractor fans in the internal bathrooms. These come on automatically when the light is switched on. We could hear the extractors from every room around us. We have stayed in plenty of hotels with similar set ups, but never have we been disturbed by the fans in other rooms. This is the one reason why we would not stay here again. Sorry to say that we have had more peaceful stays in a Premier Inn!

« Good Value With The Groupon Voucher »

Booked via Groupon voucher for 12-14th January 2016 inclusive. We had B&B and dinner. On arrival we were assigned room 125 in the modern extension(which if I have to be nit picky is poorly designed and laid out, plus why do extensions have to look so ugly and not in keeping with the original building) Room is a typical hotel room, clean well presented and decorated as the usual hotel style. Coffee/tea tray with milk, coffee, tea, sugar, chocolate and packet of biscuits. Bathroom, bath and shower fitting with rail and the usual soap, shower cap, shampoo and conditioner. Plenty of clean towels. Iron. TV. Decent storage areas(so no scrabbling around where to put your clothes). Room was way too hot, but that was easily sorted by turning the thermo down and open all windows. Breakfast was continental and cooked. Husband had a full English and I had the fish. Both breakfast we were happy with the service and food, Evening dinner, we both had the steak and the chef was happy to cook it extremely well with no sniff down(as neither the hubby or I like our meat crawling off the plate) this is important as the customer is and should be accommodate and not the dictates of fashions of food styles of the day we all can come across when staying in hotels. Head waiter was a really nice and pleasant gentleman who originated from Holland. One of the best waiters I have come across in manner and demeanour. Reception staff happy to see to our needs and happily gave more milk/tea etc if requested. Overall for us it was a pleasant break to Canterbury when staying here, plus it is only a 10 minute walk to the centre of Canterbury for all tourist sightseeing trips. If I have one trip advice I would recommend going on the GENUINE CITY TOUR GUIDE who hold a BLUE & GREEN badge this ensures a council approved guide. This costs £7.50 each, lasts 90 minutes and gives you access to the cathedral grounds within this guide. I say this because if you wish to look at the cathedral you pay a fee just to look around the grounds and an additional fee to go in the cathedral. This always angers me as I am used to all my cathedrals and museums being free were we live in and around Liverpool and Chester, this helps tourism and the ordinary person at all levels of society has access to knowledge and education.

    « Value for money »

« Very good hotel very clean and excellent staff »

We stayed for a few days which was very good and food and service excellent, due to a problem I had to go into Canterbury hospital due to illness the management and stall were excellent and Phil the bar Manager took my wife and myself to hospital and took her back to the hotel when I was keep in. The receptionsts were all very helpful to my wife and when we had to stay another night were very helpful and charge a cheaper rate. I can only say that the hotel is very nicely furnished and very nice rooms and keep in immaculate condition. We eat there one night and the meal was very good and service execelent . The breakfast were excellent with good selection and good quality food.

« Good value (with the voucher) »

Stayed two nights at this hotel with an online offer. The money spent was probably about right.. Nice hotel. Good location ? only a ten minute walk from the centre of Canterbury. The staff were very welcoming. The bar was fine although it would have been nice to have at least one proper ale on offer. I was impressed with the lay out of the dining room and again the staff were very good. The evening meal that my partner and I had from the a la carte menu was average at best. To counter that, the breakfast selection and quality of food was excellent along with the waiting staff. The room itself was fine with a pretty powerful shower. We had to send out for more pillows but they were provided without any problems. Not sure I would be keen to pay the full brochure price but with the offer it was good value and a good base to explore Canterbury

    « Not a good experience »

Our visit started with the leg breaking off the bed. We were given another room which was freezing. We had to sit in there in our coats for over an hour. The air conditioning/heating did not come on for a while. We were asked later at night to turn the heating off as the noise was keeping another guest awake! We had to keep it off and woke up in a freezing room.

    « Hmm Ok »

Visited Abbots Barton this weekend just gone. We was celebrating my birthday! After reading lots of reviews on here I was really looking forward to visiting the hotel, lots of guests were mentioning how they were upgraded to superior rooms etc, how they were treated when the hotel heard they were celebrating a birthday/anniversary etc. I had e mailed the hotel and asked for a nice room and slipped in that we were celebrating a birthday. Everything was great on our arrival and overall the hotel is very nice. Very dated décor but very clean. When I booked our weekend via a deal on Travel Zoo I received a call immediately from the hotel asking if I would like an upgrade to a superior room which I said yes ok. I was hoping they may waver this after all I had read re guests being upgraded free of charge and special treatment on their birthdays/anniversaries etc. Anyway that evening at dinner we went to the dining room for our evening meal. The atmosphere in the restaurant was really stuffy, quiet and just had that awkward feel, no atmosphere to talk of. Our deal was to choose from the set meal. Very cleverly the choice was not great and we ended up choosing some from the al la carte menu, ending up with an extra bill of £62, guess that's was these hotels hope for when booking a deal. Anyway it seemed that a few people had birthdays and were presented with birthday cards not sure if they received a desert or anything. Little old me not a thing. Also the head waiter, who I found quite funny, was ridiculously OTT at trying to be professional. He seemed to only want to stop and chat to certain people again not us. So to be honest I did not enjoy the experience in the restaurant at all apart from my lovely partners company. Oh also our starters were really horrible ive never tasted anything like it, rest of meal was however nice. It was my actual birthday that evening and to be honest I really wish we had gone out for dinner. So no not impressed at all - if you cant treat everyone in the same way then don't do it at all especially straight under guests nose. To some this may seem a little odd but I like a little fuss on my birthday and they were aware it was a special occasion !!

    « A lovely stay »

We booked a weekend here through Travelzoo so we could stay overnight when we took our daughter back to University. For the price it was amazing value. The the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to make sure everything was right for us. The meal in the evening was delicious and so was the breakfast. We even brought the dog! Unfortunately our request for the dog had not come through Travelzoo so there was not any bowl. bed etc for her but it didn't matter as we had brought our own. The rooms were clean and comfortable, decorated in a traditional style. The only down side was when somebody else was in their bathroom it sounded as if they were in ours as the sound proofing wasn't great but it wasn't really an issue.

    « Fantastic hotel »

We stayed at this lovely hotel after seeing a deal on Travel Zoo. We were very impressed, from the moment we checked in until we checked out, the Service was excellent. The evening meal could not be better and the waiting staff were warm and friendly. We were upgraded to a suite as our room we booked had been painted recently. It was a cosy pretty room with nice toiletries and coffee making facilities. There was a buffet breakfast and the waiter was charming and obviously very experienced. The actual breakfast had a wide range of foods, cooked and cold. I can recommend the mushrooms. They were so tasty! We will be back as it is also in an ideal position to explore Canterbury. Walking distance to the town.

Stayed at the Abbots Barton for a wedding. We arrived around 1pm and our room wasn't available and I asked the receptionist for a room I could change and get ready for the wedding. I was offered the hotel toilet. Our bags were left in the car and we attended the wedding then checked in around 11.30pm. Our room was very small however it did have all the necessary items you need for an overnight stay. I had a shower in the morning and set off the hotel fire alarm due to the steam from the bathroom being close to the smoke alarm! The staff came up and asked if it was the shower. Maybe the alarm needs to be moved as it seemed this had happened before. There was a good choice at breakfast and the staff on the desk and serving were friend;ly.

We hadn't been to Canterbury since our daughter was at uni 12 years ago. We chose t his hotel as we wanted to be close to to amenities but in a peaceful location. Everything about this hotel is superb. Rooms, and staff even the toiletries! We were on the third floor overlooking the renovations.this did not disturb us at all. we read the literature about the improvements and it sounds wonderful. Canterbury is a lovely city to explore all year round and this hotel is ideally situated. The breakfast was excellent. The only slight disappointment was the bar food. We chose from the menu but both items were not available. As veggie the only choice was fish and chips. This was a minor blip. The following evening we went out to eat in one of the many restaurants. We will definitely be back. (For those who don't want to drive the hotel is a leisurely 20 mins stroll from Canterbury East Station)

« Traditional Comfort and great value too »

We booked in for an overnight meal, room and breakfast on a special offer 'deal' and didn't expect too much, how wrong can you be... Lovely comfy room, huge bed and powerful shower, followed by a tasty two course dinner served by polite and knowledgeable staff... Along with a Full English to set us on our way around historic Canterbury...

Bought a night away on travelzoo £79 for two people including bed breakfast and evening meal. Fantastic value. Room 323. Family room for two. Ensuite lovely with lots of smellies. The only thing to note is the horrendous paintwork on the cupboards. Must have been a West Ham fan that got to paint them!!! Please see that it is painted over.

    « Fabulous stay »

We visited for our 39th wedding anniversary. we know the city as we only live 15 miles away so knew there would be plenty to do even in January. We had a wonderful stay> Our room was upgraded (nothing to do with our anniversary as they didn't know) which we were thrilled with as it was a really spacious, lovely room. The staff were all great, really friendly and helpful. When the restaurant supervisor found out it was our anniversary, she even went off and did us a lovely card and gave us a box of champagne truffles - what a lovely gesture. The food was amazing, both dinner and breakfast and we couldn't have wished for a better celebration. The hotel is ideally placed for a 10 minute walk into he heart of Canterbury and als to walk to the ruins of St Augustines Abbey (Engligh Heritage) which we really enjoyed. Thank you all at Abbots Barton for a really special stay

« Charming hotel with superb staff »

We spent two nights in this hotel and we really enjoyed our stay. Below are the highlights. Location: Very convenient, 10 minute walking distance from high street, movies, the Cathedral and restaurants. Exterior: Nice garden and charming Gothic style building with adequate parking for all guests. The facility is being extended so there is some groundwork at the back of the building (make sure your room is looking at the front). Interior: Again very nice and charming old style carpets, furniture and curtains in a pristine condition. The bar has a good selection of drinks and food and the restaurant has a nice, elegant decoration. Rooms: The room we stayed was an executive double on the third floor and it was pretty good. Lots of space and storage, large flat TV and free wifi. The floor is cracking a little bit, it is probably the old floorboards under the floor carpet. The bed is very large and cosy but for me too soft - had a good sleep though. The bathroom is okey with the old style taps and shower curtain. The room is air conditioned but however we tried to set the temperature we felt a little bit cold (especially the bathroom). The room has tea and coffee making facilities but no minibar. Food: The breakfast and dinner is served in the hotel's restaurant. The quality is excellent and the staff (especially the senior waiter) is really professional and helpful. Prices for a la carte dining are okey. Staff: All the staff are really friendly and helpful but I have to highlight the reception and the restaurant. We had some extra requests and they always promptly responded. All in all a good hotel that I can recommend when travelling to Canterbury.

    « Short break »

We had booked a 2 night stay and our friends decided to join us. It was my husband's birthday on arrival and our friend the next day.......so the hotel upgraded us. What a lovely surprise. Well decorated room, king size bed, clean, excellent facilities. All the staff were really helpful and exceptionally friendly. The manager, Theo, was interested in all we had to share with him and was keen to improve anything. Deal included evening meal to a certain amount. Good choice of food, well cooked, nicely presented. Lovely, varied breakfast. Library and games room. Would definitely return, especially when they have their extension with a swimming pool.

« Very good for a night or two »

Great hotel overall. Location & parking good. Lovely grounds. Cleanliness 10 points! Good toiletries. Good linens. Spacious clean room. Friendly efficient staff on arrival. Wifi(albeit inconsistent). Overall good for a night. We had booked a room without breakfast, but would have changed our mind on arrival. We were tired from our journey and didnt ask just wanting to get to our room. But then realized we had not been informed about the cost of breakfast on arrival nor was there information in the hotel literature in the room. When we called to find out, they said our room didnt include breakfast. Ok, but what would it be if we wanted to change our minds, or how to get a coffee. A bit of inflexibility. Awkward. The price of the breakfast seemed a big mystery reserved for an inner circle! ;) Bed was a bit lumpy, but ok overall. Shower: water was not manageable, kept changing from ice cold to scorching. Bathroom fan made a loud sound, not possible to turn off. Staff were very kind, but seemed more geared to ticking off boxes on arrival, and then during stay didn't seem as keen. For example, we asked if there was an umbrella, they didnt check but told us to check a box on leaving to go for a walk. Box was empty. Not very forthcoming after checkin. Our room was a bit noisy. We could hear a crying baby for hours. So insulation not the best. Wifi on phone kept cutting out and reverting to 3g. Better on ipad. Despite the hotel having gorgeous grounds, our room Overlooked a kind of building site. There was not a bottle of water in the room, which most hotels of this kind usually have. This was a room for two with one packet of cookies. The tea and coffee in the room could have been better quality. Strong smell of fresh paint in both room and bathroom.

    « Unexpected noise »

This is a lovely hotel which we only stayed for one night .charming, excellent restaurant, helpful staff, all spoilt by a very noisy extractor fan being used in the bathroom of the adjoining room throughout the night and early hours of the morning. By complaining at the desk the morning of our check-out it was established that the fan was old and due to be replaced and also the guests in the adjoining room whom we met in the hall were also concerned about the noisy fan and mentioned to my wife and I that they were going to complain because their partner was also disturbed during the night by being awoken when the bathroom was being used. There is nothing worse than being a paying guest at a hotel and having disturbed sleep due to unexpected noises because of poor maintenance,

« Great location, extremely friendly, polite and efficient staff »

Canterbury is a beautiful city, the location of the hotel is easy walking distance into town which is a huge bonus as parking seems to get a bit gridlocked at busier times. The hotel is comfortable and welcoming. We were very impressed with the friendliness of the staff, nothing was too much trouble. They also made us feel at home with our dog by setting up a dinner table in the bar so we could keep him with us. Great breakfast with efficient ongoing re-fill of buffet. Altogether a charming place to stay.

« Loved this fabulous hotel »

A one-night dinner bed and breakfast for 6 friends taken between Christmas and New Year 2015. A stunning hotel situated quietly in beautiful grounds within 10 minutes walk of Canterbury City Centre, Easy parking at the hotel. The interior of the hotel is spotless, beautifully maintained and decorated throughout in comfortable yet sumptuous Victorian and Gothic style. The Christmas tree and decorations were enchanting. The staff are very professional, friendly and helpful, across all areas. Reception staff are knowledgeable of the area and can direct you to where to go in the city if needed. The dinner was excellent - 5 steaks all with different degrees of rare/well done, and they all came to table as requested, on time and the service was great. Breakfast (self-service) was also well-cooked and varied. On behalf of all of us 'thank you for such a lovely stay'. We look forward to returning. Pete

    « Superb staff,food,service,accommodation »

My wife and I returned home today having stayed for 2 nights at this wonderful hotel. The pleasure starts with the welcome, after driving for 4 hours in horrible weather, the welcoming smile was a good start. It was my wife's birthday and we were given free upgrade for our special occasion. The room was excellent, we couldn't' have asked for better. From the moment you step into this beautiful hotel you get a nice feeling.,we found it exceptionally clean and tastefully decorated as is the bar and restaurant. The food is excellent. I realise this sounds too good to be true but we have stayed in many hotels over the year, this on is one of the very best and well worth a good honest review. Finally I must repeat again how wonderful we found all of the management and staff, they made my wife's birthday and our 30 wedding anniversary most enjoyable Thank you all .We will be back.

« Old and charming. Friendly helpful staff and good location »

Very friendly and helpful staff, made me feel at home straight away. We here impressed with the simperthic conversation and the old world comfort. The food in the evening was first class but not enough veg for us. The buffit style breakfast was excellent except for no choice of eggs, only fried available, but every thing elce you could want. I would definitely use again.

« Heritage hotel that retains its charm while serving up a quality stay and friendly staff »

I wanted a couple of nights so that I could show my wife the historic city that was a great part of my childhood so chose Abbots Barton hotel as it was within sensible walking distance of the car free city centre. The wind and the rain spoilt our sightseeing (not the hotel's fault) but nothing affected our stay at this hotel. Friendly, and efficient, staff made us very welcome. The rambling corridors were fascinating, and the room as comfortable as you could wish for. Even the noisy plumbing was totally efficient - lots of hot water. Breakfast was very pleasant as well. All-in-all a hotel I have great pleasure in recommending.

    « Amazing break away »

Our first impression , as we entered the sweeping driveway , was one of amazement as we didn't expect it to be set in such beautiful grounds so close to the city . We were welcomed by friendly staff members from the very beginning and that didn't stop throughout our visit . Our clean fully equipped rooms were nestled within a maze that just added to the character of the whole hotel. Breakfast was delicious and nothing was too much trouble for the staff . We would like to say an enormous thank you to the mature gentleman that looked after us, he was so polite and couldn't do enough to make our experience at breakfast enjoyable . We would definitely recommend the hotel and hope to return in the future.

A cool hotel the decor is grand, it's a nice hotel I'd come back here. And Canterbury is a cool city. The barman even bought me a beer. Which was a shame as I was only staying for the one as I would of bought him one back. It's only a 10 minute walk into town and it's quite a nice walk.

A very warm welcome on our arrival, followed by a free up-grade which was very nice. Thank you. The hotel staff were very helpful at all times. « Very Nice Hotel »

Stayed at the Abbots Barton yesterday whilst attending a work Christmas Party at the nearby cricket ground. Arrived early (12pm) to leave our car to go out for lunch and was pleasantly surprised to be able to check in early as our room was ready and had been up-graded. Lovely spacious room. Very clean and nicely decorated. Huge bed!! Very pleasant friendly staff. Have stayed at the Abbots on a couple of occasions previously and have never had a bad experience. Great to see the hotel so busy in December ????????

    « Great hotel. »

My wife & I visited to celebrate my wife passing her exams & to visit Canterbury at Christmas time!! The hotel was located within easy walking distance from the city centre. The atmosphere was warm & welcoming. The staff were friendly & engaging. Our room was great. Although not large, had everything you need. The decor was in good condition as well (not tired etc). The main bar area had friendly staff & good selection of drinks. Breakfast was fantastic - attentive waiter staff & good selection of food (have come to expect nothing less). Overall, the hotel is not top-notch but worth staying at! You won't be disappointed for the money you pay.

« immaculately clean, and grand Hotel »

We stayed here for 1 night last night. The room was the largest we had ever stayed in and really beautiful. The staff were so polite and very welcoming. We went with friends who wanted to take their dog which was also made to feel very welcome. I couldn't fault this hotel at all...absolutely brilliant. We had a bath with a jacussi....my only advise would be, you only need a very small amount of the complimentary shower jell to be added to the bath water ! Food was of very high quality.

    « Pleasant enough - BUT...... »

On paper this hotel looks and sounds wonderful, in reality its good, has a traditional feel to it, is in a perfect location and feels welcoming from the moment you walk into the spacious reception area. My wife and I had an overnight stay as we were attending a Christmas Party there. Firstly, car parking is VERY limited so arrive as early as possible in order to get parked. Secondly, the car parking spaces are extremely narrow, so expect your car to be damaged, consider it a bonus if it isn`t! I believe that the only alternative parking is in nearby pay & display car parks. The reception staff were friendly and welcoming and the overall `look` of the interior is lovely, especially with the Xmas decorations everywhere. Our room (Room 3) was to the rear of the hotel (ground floor), and only a short walk from reception. Perfect for our needs. Quiet too. The room was clean and had a traditional feel, and though the décor was fine, it did give the room a slightly tired feel. However, everything worked and it was fitted out with everything needed for a short stay, including a trouser press. The bathroom was fitted with the most powerful shower I have ever encountered - I nearly ended up in Dover!! Our Christmas party was nicely set-out, but unfortunately the food was delivered slowly and portions were inconsistent - and it was a long walk to the bar. None of this spoilt our evening though, but it does make me wonder why a hotel of this nature almost struggled to deliver for a large party in the way we had all hoped. Breakfast is well worth the money, served in a lovely room well set out and managed by attentive staff. The food choice was extensive and perfectly prepared. In summary, a great overnight stay - shame that the view from our window was simply a building site which doesn`t look like completion any time soon. The hotel is set within its own mature grounds and is very local to the city centre; cathedral etc. so I would recommend it - just be aware of the car parking issues which is the hotels biggest downside.

    « Lovely pleasant Hotel »

Staff were lovely, rooms very clean, though rather too hot in room. The breakfast was very nice, and staff on the ball so all dishes were replenished. Unfortunately we found the restaurant in the evening overly expensive for what it was, (just an average meal) .

    « Consistantly Good »

Stayed hear twice now and both times have been a very good experience. Clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. Reception welcoming and helpful. All the staff we encountered were first class. Second time round we had a number of friends and family staying for our wedding and everyone was very pleased with the experience. Good Value too and free parking is always bonus. We had an enjoyable meal in the restaurant in the evening and the breakfasts was also very good. We were very happy campers.

« the staff at this hotel made you feel very welcome. »

Good start to our stay was the very friendly and professional welcome from the reception and bar staff. Overall the staff were excellent which makes all the difference when you stay in a hotel. Breakfast was again very good with a full selection of well prepared cooked and cold food. Coffee and Tea were served promptly as we sat down. Room was good and large...bit hot but opened the window. Easy access into Canterbury. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Canterbury

« Excellent value for money, great position for Canterbury »

Stayed two nights in room 121, it was very clean, a good size, had everything we required, including a heated trouser press (maybe old fashioned now but I love them) and a decent sized bathroom. The staff were particularly lovely, particularly Pietro and the whole hotel had a charm and character about it (we were in the old part). Breakfast was again very good, it is a delight to stay in a hotel where you can have freshly cooked haddock or kippers - the quality of everything was impressive and it was a shame we didn't eat in the restaurant for dinner - next time we will. Don't hesitate to ask for extra teabags and herbal tea if required - they were more than happy to bring them up to our room. Beds were comfortable and we had two lovely armchairs as well. No fridge in room. Free, fast wi-fi. Finally, this hotel is beautifully positioned for walking into Canterbury and visiting this historic town - it took about ten minutes and is a long straight road straight in, so no car parking problems and the hotel has the advantage of being very peaceful.

    4
    « Excellent value »

As points members we were upgraded to a room with king sized bed and Jacuzzi bath - an enjoyable bonus. Easy parking on site and easy walk into Canterbury, but we chose to eat in the hotel restaurant, which was excellent.

Only bad thing was we only had 1 night there, will definitely be returning, comfortable, clean, good service and great location with car park. Decor is brilliant a nice change from the standard bland bedrooms and overstated bars .

« EXCELLENT HOTEL AND STAFF »

What can I say, this hotel was amazing. It was my partners 55th Birthday (Kenny Brookes), they could not do enough for him. They firstly all signed a Birthday Card and arranged a special birthday breakfast and then evening meal. All the staff arrived in party hats and sang to Kenny. What a lovely bunch of people, who seriously enjoyed the day as much as we did. The Senior Manager of the restaurant and the hotel Manager went the extra mile for us - what a lovely time we had. The room as excellent, comfortable, clean and welcoming. Thank you to all the staff - we will certainly be coming back for more! 5 Star Service.

    « Excellent service »

This hotel is very well decorated and clean with efficient staff and a friendly atmosphere. There were a couple of minor lapses but I cannot fault the keen and efficient way that staff dealt with these. Overall, a pleasant stay and we would definitely stay again

« Very Nice Hotel - but why does it sound like Chewbacca is hiding in the plumbing? »

This is a very nice hotel and ideally situated for access into the city centre for all of the tourist attractions (10 minute walk max). Staff are friendly and helpful and it is clean. How one views the decor is down to personal taste - personally I liked it but for some it could be seen as outdated and in need of modernisation, but I would say that it is part of the charm and fits well with the exterior of the building. So far so good. However, what does need attention is the plumbing system. Having read the other reviews here, there is almost a uniform opinion that it is well below expectation. Something is clearly wrong when turning a tap on creates a groaning from the walls not unlike a distressed wookie. And, there are definite pressure problems when the shower/bath has to be left full on without a drop flowing while the system creaks into life and delivers an erratic dribble of scorching hot, luke-warm, cold, back to hot again water. In summary, I still give this hotel a very good rating because in all other ways except the plumbing, it is a very amiable place to stay and not the usual soul-less magnolia box rooms that most of the chains offer.

    3
« Away Ti Abbots Barton »

Spent a weekend here and found it to be of average standard for its official rating. The staff were friendly and the hotel was clean and tidy. The room was in the original old part of the hotel and so was a little cramped, and the en suite bathroom could benefit by having a refit with modern furniture. The location was great, standing in sizeable grounds just far enough away from the centre (15 minute walk) to be devoid of heavy traffic and noise. The restaurant was expensive, and there was a wedding party on the Saturday/Sunday night, which quite lively, so we didn't spent much time there. However, it made a good base.

    « Bar lunch »

We live in Canterbury and have passed this hotel often, so dropped in for a bar lunch. No one about during the day, unsurprisingly perhaps but the receptionist sent a bar man to our table in the very pleasant large bar area. Menu was uninspiring, about 5 different types of sandwiches and a couple of ordinary 'with chips' mains. We both chose the prawn and avocado but the chef had run out of prawn so we settled for chicken and tomato. Mine was on a baguette which was tasty, my husband's was supposed to be on bloomer bread but it was normal sliced bread. However the sandwiches were good. The beers on tap are the standard basic types of lager and John Smith's bitter which is a very boring beer. The barman was pleasant, but my half pint came in a full pint glass which was odd. We did like the bar and perhaps a place to return to to enjoy a g&t. But otherwise it deserved an average for the bar food menu.

    « Welcome to the 1980's.... »

This hotel needs a serious refurbishment, everything is very dated, there is even a full carpeted lift. My main issue though was the shower, I woke up in time to make it to breakfast and went to have a shower before going, only to find there was no hot water... I rang reception and was told that because everyone is using the shower before breakfast, some people won't get hot water and have to take a punt later????I'm sorry but for £120 a night I would expect the plumbing system to be updated to handle the amount of guests the hotel can cater for, worst thing being that no one apologised for this at all either. My advice, give this place a miss if you can:)

    « Brilliant weekend »

We were here for mine and my husband's Ladies Festival weekend, and I must say we were 100% pleased with what the hotel did for us. Many people have complained about the heating in the hotel, and yes, it was very hot. But I think people should remember we are having a very mild spell for November, and normally we would have required heating throughout the hotel. We turned the rads down in our room and kept the windows open, no hardship!! We were made aware that there was an issue with the hot water on the Saturday evening, and that the staff had done all they could to rectify it. It doesn't help when you have 80+ guests wanting to shower and bath at the same time!! We have experienced the same in other hotels when there has been a large number of guests wanting to get ready around the same time, but we accepted that. The hotel is well presented, all rooms furbished to a high standard and the food whether it was breakfast or an evening meal was extremely good. It was well cooked and presented well, with the waiting staff doing all they could to make it special, and nothing was too much trouble. I shall be writing to the hotel to tell them how pleased we were with all they did to make our Ladies Festival special. We would be very happy to stay at this hotel again.

    « For us - all good! »

We too were at a Masonic long weekend event and agree that the hotel was extremely warm! We had no heating on in our room, the windows were open and we requested blankets instead of duvets which were easier to throw off - all credit to the staff who brought us these blankets by return. We had no trouble with the hot water though and our room was a good size, beautifully decorated and colour co-ordinated. The food was nicely cooked and presented throughout the weekend and the staff couldn't have tried harder. Parking could be a problem in that there were too few spaces and if you moved your car I'm not sure you would have found another space on your return but with a 6/7 minute walk into Canterbury we made the most of not driving and walked through this lovely City. All in all a lovely weekend with lovely people in a lovely location.

« Came with my wife and 3 other guests for a Masonic ladies festival weekend »

Arrived Friday afternoon room seemed clean however extremely hot all be it no heating was on, we both showered and found the temp of water fluctuated from scolding hot to cold, 2 of our guests complained there room was cold and no means of getting heat was told by reception heating does not come on til 7! Later we all went down to dinner and afterwards to bar at 11:10 to be told bar staff was going home and night porter would serve us, finally asked him for coffee to be told machine had been turned off and coffee would be 30 mins, complained and management and management came and made coffee. We all went back to our rooms and again ours was even hotter, and had to leave windows open and heard machine running outside all night. In morning met with my guests to be told there room remained cold with a bathroom window that was impossible to close, and throughout the night had strange banging noises from heating pipe work, that at one point was so much noise that woke up my other guest in adjacent room. Now down to breakfast mine and one guest ok however other guests ordered hot drinks eat breakfast and asked at least 5 times for the hot drinks to be delivered! Went out for the day and returned mid afternoon to shower and change for festive dinner to find no hot water, complained and was given keys to another room, and again no hot water, again complained only to be given another room, however before we got there, received a call to say don't bother to go to this room as there is no het water! The staff are really good at saying sorry, but they do get a lot of practice!

    « Certainly a warm welcome »

Just enjoyed a short break in Canterbury staying just one night at the Abbots Barton hotel. We had a small double with ensuite which was tidy and clean albeit dated decor. The TV wished us a 'warm welcome' but didn't appreciate just how warm! With the radiator off and both windows fully open the room was so hot we had to sleep on top of the bed clothes. I did try turning on the aircon unit but that wouldn't work. I imagine because it was early November. We did mention our discomfort to reception staff on departure and they confirmed that others had made similar comments about being too hot. We were told that maintenance had looked at the heating system and they as all is OK. I can only suggest that they get another maintenance company to look at the system. We decided to eat in the Fountains restaurant and whilst disappointed that the a la carte menu was not available, the dinner chosen from the fixed price menu was really good. The food was well presented and full of flavour. The waitress staff were very attentive. We both thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Decor in the restaurant is a little strange, sort of gothic funeral parlour /chapel? We did have buffet breakfast at £13 a head which we considered steep. Nothing special but again very attentive staff. One small point, I would have preferred a sugar bowl on the table as sugar cubes don't allow small measures in drinks. We used the hotel as a base to visit the city and it is in good walking distance, approx 10 minutes. I would say the hotel is ok, the staff lovely but they really must sort out the heating!

    « Good location »

Only stayed for one night, but was very pleased with this hotel. The location is great, only 10 minute walk into the centre of Canterbury. Parking was a little restricted, whilst they are building an extension to the hotel, but there appeared to be enough spaces. The room was a good size and very clean. Breakfast was good, although a little expensive. I would certainly stay in this hotel when next in the area.

    « Fantastic Hotel »

The hotel looks amazing from outside and it is very clean, elegant and welcoming on the inside. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and our room was lovely, very comfortable - it had everything we needed for our stay. We dined at the hotel and partook in the amazing buffet breakfast in the morning - the food was sinfully delicious and very well presented. The hotel is in a great location for the city centre, it only took us a pleasant 10 minute walk to reach it. Would definitely stay at Abbots Barton again.

« Lovely building and superb staff »

Stayed here for 3 nights and, as a rewards club member, got upgraded to one of the executive rooms in the main building. This was lovely, clean and spacious, if in need of a bit of an update. Without exception the staff were wonderful...the hotel's main asset and I hope the management treat them well!! We ate in the restaurant one night from the fixed price, mid week menu which was lovely and obviously using the best ingredients. Breakfast was also brilliant...a really wide selection of everything on the continental, self service table...no fresh fruit salad, which is my particular favourite, but plenty of fresh fruit, mueslis, yoghurts, juices, pastries, etc so absolutely no complaints there. The hot food menu was very comprehensive and cooked to order, again using obviously the best of ingredients. The only thing we felt a bit aggrieved about was on the second and third mornings, a self service hot table appeared with a very minimal selection of hot food. We took advantage of it but, as ever, no 'kept warm' food comes up to the standard of freshly cooked. On chatting to the lovely breakfast staff afterwards, we were told that the menu was still available (they were not on the tables, however, but at the side) and that the self service was there because they had a group staying. We knew the score on the third morning so asked for a menu....it just felt as if we were being discouraged from ordering from it and at £100 per night, even in an upgraded room, we felt that was a bit mean. Didn't spoil the overall stay, however, and the location is great - easy walking distance of the city centre and cathedral.

« Ideal short break venue, lovely hotel , excellent breakfast, short walk into Canterbury »

Just back from 3 nights bed and breakfast, hotel and grounds are lovely and only a ten minute stroll into Canterbury centre. Reception staff were welcoming. We were so pleased with the bedroom, 215, one of the largest on the 2nd floor, large comfortable bed , 2 easy chairs and small coffee table, tea making facilities, bedroom decor was in keeping with the style of the hotel and looked recently decorated and everything was spotlessly clean. Large en suite bathroom. The room overlooks the hotel entrance and car park but we did not suffer from excessive noise from guest leaving the hotel. Our only criticism is that the room was far too hot, the bathroom heated towel rail could not be turned down so pumped out lots of heat, we slept with both bedroom windows wide open and that solved the problem, but could have been an issue if it had been raining. The breakfast was very good and staff in breakfast room were friendly and attentive. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant in the evening as the menu was limited and seemed expensive. There are many restaurants/cafes in Canterbury. Canterbury is delightful, lots of little side streets with individual shops to browse round in addition to the usual chain stores. We recommend the walking tour, cost about £7.50 each for seniors for 90 minute tour, our guide was friendly and very informative. The tour took us around the city centre sites and into the grounds of the magnificent Cathedral.

« Comfortable room, pleasant staff, good location »

We had a reunion dinner here on Saturday night. The hotel is comfortable, and we had a good size double executive room on the third floor, room 317, very quiet, good bed, great bath with water jets. The breakfast buffet was good, apart from the weak coffee, and the dining room had a nice atmosphere and attentive staff. Parking is limited. We arrived at the earliest check in time of 2pm and we got the last tight spot in the car park. Building work is going on at the back of the hotel, but there was no work going on Sat-Sun.

« Food good, decor slightly dated. »

We were given the same room (318) as our previous stay, right at the top. Spacious room and bathroom and massive bed. No views but with Velux windows no need to draw curtains either therefore woken by the sunrise. It was a bit warm throughout the hotel, but again opening the window a bit at night worked wonders for a good nights sleep. Dinner excellent as was breakfast of freshly prepared scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Friendly attentive and efficient staff. Pietro deserves a mention - really caring. Did have a bit of issue with the Wifi but switched it off and used 4G so no big deal. Reading some of the other comments about this location really question if they stayed at the same place. Enjoyed our stay and will be back.

    « Family celebration of Dad's 80th birthday celebration »

Family of ten, booking of four rooms. All rooms beautifully clean and decorated. Comfortable lounges for coffee and drinks prior to evening meal. Table delightfully decorated and placed in an alcove. Staff were friendly and efficient. We all chose from the standard restaurant menu, and were impressed with presentation and quality of our choices of food. Also delighted with service as all dishes arrived at the same time, so no waiting. Waiters were always on hand, but never hovering. After a comfortable and quiet night's rest, a varied and well presented breakfast awaited us. A happy and memorable stay for us all

Service very good, staff really helpful. Breakfast was very good. The room was very clean and when asked for more teabags, I was given more tea bags and biscuits, which was very good of the staff. The bed was not very good, needs mattress replacing. Very poor internet reception is the only problem.

    « Tired hotel »

Just stayed the night, room very hot with no heating on, bed the hardest most uncomfortable every tried to sleep in! Pillows as flat as pancakes! The room upstairs floorboards were so creaky I was worried that were going to come through the ceiling! The saving grace was the breakfast and the lovely staff.

« Good location, period decor »

We stayed at this hotel because it was just outside the City Centre but was only a 10 minute stroll to get there. When we arrived, all the parking spaces were full and three cars were circling to find a space. We eventually parked in what wasn't a designated space and were pleased when we entered the hotel. We didn't eat there but the room was fine, decorated in period fashion ( that would appeal to visiting foreign tourists) and it was comfortable. It was reasonable value for money and we would stay again.

« Restaurant does not do hotel justice »

Food is very mediocre and limited, the restaurant is not as portrayed on the web sight, menu extremely expensive, we paid £82 for what was basically chicken and chips, with a bottle of wine with cork floating in it and poor cold desert. Ordering the cheese board for two in the bar it cost £15 for six small biscuits, teaspoon full of chutney, four small pieces of cheese, and four large pats of butter with half an Apple. The bar is badly stocked with no decent brandy and poor service. Oh and 6_30 Monday morning the builders started outside our window. Bill and Jenny.

    « Good location, noisy »

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend to visit Canterbury. first the positives: it's in a very good location, a very easy walk to the city centre. Staff are helpful and friendly. The room was cleaned well. A very good breakfast - I asked if there were any vegetarian options and they immediately offered to cook some veggie sausages. I told them I was staying another night, and the following morning my sausages were waiting for me. On the down side - the walls between the rooms are paper thin. We were woken at night by the guests next door coming in late and they weren't being loud, it was just that we could hear every word of their conversation. The following morning their alarm woke us too! On Sunday morning, having got back to sleep after their alarm woke us a second morning, the fire alarm went off. It was a false alarm. Our room wasn't ready on arrival, an hour after the check in time. We were offered a complimentary coffee in the bar as they assured us the room would not take long. However, we had to go to reception twice as there was no-one serving in the bar. After ordering, the reception staff did bring us our key and the room was ready. A bit hit and miss.

    « Canturbury Stay »

Good quiet location, good breakfast but do not rely on the advertised high sped internet- not working and nothing to appease because of it, not eaven my £8 bar bill. Parking is a bit tight but we were ok, and no extra charge was a bonus.

    « Expensive »

Nice grounds and building but a 3 hour wait for the room and no breaky or decent wifi. 2 hour wait on dinner after ordering. Could not even use the toilet during the wait on our room. And a air conditioning that sounds like a drill does not help with sleeping.

« Great short stay at this hotel »

Well appointed room, shame about the building site outside the window. Room was very clean and comfortable. Food was excellent and the staff. We're extremely competent and very friendly.Quite. Well positioned for access to the. Town centre, about a ten minute walk. Wi fi wasn't working but this was down to BT, no surprise there though. i would not hesitate to use this hotel again if I were in the area a gain.

    « Great location. »

We only stayed here for one night but thought it was a lovely hotel. The room we had in the front of the hotel on the third floor was very good. The room was a good size and separate spacious bathroom. The hotel is located about 10 minute walk from the edge of town -which makes it ideal. The staff are very helpful and the breakfast very good.

    « A Hotel with personality a gem. »

Stayed for six nights, and from the welcome to the goodbye I could not have asked for a more professional service. My room was on the second floor and had everything you would require for a comfortable stay. It did not have a great view but it was very quiet. I did wonder if they would be better putting a shower cubicle in the bathroom due to the location of the loo some elderly might find access difficult. Also I had to hold the shower head as the pressure of the water knocked it sideways. Not a great problem for me. The bar and lounge had very comfortable chairs and sofas great place to relax. I ate in the restaurant and the food was a high standard. I had no problem parking despite a coach in all week, but I was back early when I did use my car but if there was an event the car park was full. Great location within walking distance to the centre and all the action.

    « Lovely Hotel »

We have had a most enjoyable 4 day break at the Abbots Barton hotel. Our standard room was spacious and tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean there was 2 comfortable chairs and table, a large wide screen TV, plenty of storage and the bathroom had a variety of toiletries. There is some building work going on a new extension but is did not affect us as we were in a room overlooking the car park on the front. Although we didn't use the dining room at night as we had made other plans, but we enjoyed the breakfast, it had a wide range of hot and cold food. The staff in reception and the dining room were most obliging and friendly. The hotel is well situated for the city centre, about 10 to 15 minute walk, there is a bus stop outside the hotel if required. A place we shall return to.

    « Second Home »

I have stopped at the Abbots Barton regularly, perhaps every 2 weeks on average. This hotel certainly does have personality, but it is the people that really make a difference. The welcome is warm, friendly, but professional whether it is your first or thirty first time. The location is superb for me as it is near the city centre. Rooms do vary in size but are generally larger than many hotels. There can be a little noise through the walls so please keep the TV down after 11 and try not to snore so loud. There is always a desk-like space in the room and the WiFi is good in most rooms I have stayed in. I have had problems connecting only once. Parking is good but can be tight if there is a coach party in. The food is very good and sometimes excellent. Breakfast is a varied and a good start to the day, they cater for most tastes. I have stayed in a lot of BW hotels and the water pressure is always good so the whether you want a shower or a quick bath there is never a problem. Enjoy

    « Weekend Away »

Location of hotel was perfect, a 10 minute walk from Canterbury Town Centre. Room was clean, but decoration a bit "tired". I appreciate that they are doing building work which was obvious as our view over looked the building site, but they also need to do up the rest of the place. Staff were very friendly, breakfast was very overpriced.
