    « Cheap & Cheerful Stopover »

Located just a stones throw off the M5 at Jct 14, this is ideal for breaking a journey. The rooms are on the small side, but do the job and staff are pleasant & helpful. Breakfast is very good with loads of choices but be careful what you pick for evening meal. Probably best to stick with something the chef/cook can't ruin!! Also beware morning traffic noise at the front if you are a light sleeper.

    « Great Staff »

We have stayed before but booked one of the larger rooms this time. Super friendly receptionist, quick check in and very clean room. What stood out was that the staff seemed happy to work here and were naturally pleasant, none of the 'have a nice day' crap that passes for service now. We stayed for two separate nights on the way to Leek and Nottingham and back. Hotel is close to the M5 on the A38. First class buffet breakfast in on the rate. We have stayed in about 180 Best Westerns, mainly in USA and Canada and think the staff here are the best we have met. Looking forward to next stay.

    « Terrible Sunday dinner »

We booked dinner for 1.45 this Sunday for 4 people, on arrival staff were friendly and accommodating, we were escorted to our table, but it wasn't ready, so we went back to the bar area and waited. Only one had starters and to be honest it was nice, but when we went up to get dinner, there was very little meat left, and only cauliflower cheese, no parsnips, not much broccoli and no carrots, Luke warm gravy and the roast potatoes must have been there hours along with very soggy Yorkshire puddings. We all had dessert are we were still hungry, the Eton mess had no meringues if so very little. The chocolate brownie was very nice tho very small. Very disappointed for over £75.00

« Great Room, great food and very well priced »

Had a short stay here, but the staff were fantastic, very welcoming and extremely helpful. The room was great, very comfy bed and nice powerful shower. And the cooked breakfast! Delicious! I would truly recommended this hotel to anyone, particularly those looking for an easy pitstop that is close to the motorway. Very impressed.

« First class service for our Wedding Day »

From the moment we first booked our wedding reception we experienced first class service and knew we had the best venue. Our wedding coordinator (Emma) went above and beyond the call of duty at every turning point. We both have extremely high standards and the hotel and staff really did deliver. The function room: our wedding reception room was decorated to perfection. We visited other hotels in the Bristol region where the decor was tired and in dire need of a refurb. Not at The Gables. The room is a great size, extremely clean and the tables and chairs all looked stunning on the day. We opted for chair covers, had our budget not stretched to that it really wouldn't have mattered. The addition of fairy lights in the room really did add that little sparkle - which during the evening was perfect. In addition the reception room has the added bonus of its own private bar. Accommodation: many of our party stayed for more than one night and all had the highest praise for their rooms. Rooms are well equipped, very clean and spacious. We had the the honeymoon suite (obviously) which boasts coffee making facilities, a four-poster bed and a jacuzzi bath. When you've been on your feet all day the jacuzzi bath really is a welcome addition. The bed and pillows (I'm very fussy about my pillows) were very comfortable. Food: we have eaten at The Gables on many occasions now. From Sunday lunches, to specific events (Father's Day lunch) to our wedding and of course breakfast. On every single occasion they have delivered delicious, high quality, good value food. The service on our wedding day was top notch and all food was served piping hot with good portion sizes and in a timely manner. We really couldn't have asked for more. Staff: the staff really are what makes this hotel one we will go back to time and time again, particularly if we need to hold an event. Every single member of staff we dealt with was friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble and it's clear that a high standard is placed on them. They deliver at every turn. Communication: many of our suppliers had to deal direct with the hotel in order to arrange delivery and collection of items. Emma coordinated this to perfection. Location: the hotel is located off of the A38. This was perfect for us and our guests, many of whom had travelled from all over the UK; we didn't notice any road noise whilst staying at the hotel. In fact during the day of our wedding many of our guests gathered outside for drinks whilst photos were done. In summary this is a wonderful hotel with extremely helpful staff, great food, clean accommodation and all at an extremely competitive rate. Thank you!

    « Autumn Break »

Stayed on an Autumn Break deal with Dinner included on the first night. The location is very convenient for driving to, as it's on the A38 and close to the M5. We found some quieter country lanes for a pleasant bike ride in the local area. The hotel staff were all very friendly and welcoming and our room was comfortable with a very big king-size bed (actually two singles together). I was pleasantly surprised to find three well-kept real ales in the bar. The evening meal was really good and we enjoyed the buffet breakfast with free-range eggs and plenty of variety to choose from. Although fronting on to the A38 the hotel is set back so you could barely hear the road in our room. We would happily stay there again.

    « Reasonable food - Good sevice - Enjoyed »

Visited for lunch on a Groupon deal and must say that I enjoyed the food and the dining experience. Pleasant restaurant dining room which could be described as functional rather than luxurious. The service was certainly praiseworthy and the staff helpful and friendly . Fairly limited menu but that is no bad thing as an over extended menu in a hotel venue usually means most of the food is going to be microwaved readymeals. The food itself at the Gables is competent rather than original or inspired but nevertheless it's nicely presented and I enjoyed a tasty satisfying meal. All in all an enjoyable midweek lunch.

    « Club Annual Dinner »

Booked by the Bowls club for the annual Dinner Dance and Awards. Very prompt and efficient front desk on arrival. Bar was well staffed to handle the pre event drinks service. Dinner was fine, although occasionally a little slow with the front tables often a course ahead in service compared to the back tables. But serving a large groups of people is always a challenge and the staff were swift, polite and ensured we did eventually all get a nice meal. Disco booked by club was excellent with all the right dancing music for the age range. Bedroom was clean and tidy, with sufficient towels and spotless bathroom. We had a room at the back so very peaceful sleep, when we eventually got to bed. Breakfast in the morning had a good selection and was kept stocked up with all the usual full English breakfast items you expect, plus fresh fruit selection and cereals. Would happily attend another event here and would recommend for any visitors or people travelling on the M5 motorway, with J14 just a few minutes away.

    « overnight stay »

Only stayed one night but it was excellent. Bed very comfortable and what a joy to have a bath, so many hotels just have showers and a leisurely soak, such a bonus!! There was a murder mystery night on so rather concerned we as non participants would be sidelined but the opposite. Our meal in the restaurant very good and our waitress so helpful and pleasant. Breakfast busy but again no problems. Only comment would be the lighting in the bedroom rather dim, not easy to read but apart from that minor detail a lovely stay.

« Excellent stay, fab staff. »

We stayed for one night on Thursday 27th October. Excellent room, spacious and comfortable, loved the 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath. The room was clean and modern. Evening meal in the bar was excellent, my two young children loved their meals too. The staff were fantastic especially Kate. Her customer service is fab and is so friendly and smiley she is lovely. Breakfast was fab too, such a great choice there was something for everyone. Again Kate and the staff were helpful and friendly, having recently stayed in a Cornish hotel where at breakfast you arent even acknowledged, having smiley, friendly staff is a bonus you have certainly some fab staff which makes the hotel, thanks for a great stay.

« Great place to stop off while in Gloustershire »

On a visit to Westernbirt Arboretum we spent a night here to break up the journey. The service was excellent ( especially from Kate in the restraunt) all the staff were polite and helpful, the rooms were comfortable and clean and the food was good.

    « The night before Dad's wedding »

The Gables was the cheapest hotel on Booking.com when I searched. It is a well presented 3 star. Reception was manned and service was great. Some of the decor beyond reception is a bit tired but overall still looks and feels good. Room was smallish but well equipped. Noise from the A38 and the bar was a bit of an issue (and the reason for the dropped Mark). Meal in the restaurant was lovely. Scallops as a starter were divine. Good selection of drinks. Service was great. Definitely recommended

    « Excellent value »

On the spur of the moment decided to stay over nite following a lovely day out at Berkeley Castle, and the Best Western has been a good choice of ours in York in the past so The Gables was a consideration. Yolander took our reservation over the phone and happy for us to book in after we had finished our day at the Castle. For £55 B&B was excellent value. The room was more than adequately sized, clean and fresh and with this in mind we had no doubts about dining there in the evening. The young man who waited on our table was very polite and pleasant. I noticed from his badge that he was a trainee, and I have to say as a mother, his parents should be very proud of him and his mentor, for he was knowledgable, considerate and offered very good suggestions. We were also very impressed that there was a separate outdoor smoking area well away from the alfresco seating area outside, I only wish more places offered this, and I for one do not relish smokers puffing their smoke over us while we eat ??, however we sat out under the moon light enjoying a nite cap. Breakfast was amazing, what a selection of fresh food, from cooked to continental, cereals and fruit, juices, teas and coffee wow, Have got our eye on a Murder Mystery weekend stay ??.

    « Lovely »

Stayed for one night lovely Hotel warm welcome, great spacious room very clean and comfortable, tea and coffee facilities in room, staff were friendly, breakfast was included and was very nice but the only negative i have is that the breakfast could have been a lot warmer. Overall a great stay.

    « Nice hotel »

We stayed for one night. Staff were very helpful and efficient. Our room was very nice. Tray containing tea/ coffee in room. Beds were comfortable. There was a slight noise from traffic but it wouldn't stop us using the hotel again. Breakfast was very nice. Plenty of parking.

    « A disappointing, two night break. »

The hotel was clean, comfortable with a reasonably well appointed room and very well positioned for access to the motorway, The majority of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable but dining proved to be a very disappointing experience. Dinner on the first evening (included in the package) was acceptable but nothing more. After a long, tiring second day we decided to dine in the restaurant again..... what a disaster. My quail's egg starter was completely uncooked and I complained and could not eat it, my main was a vegetable curry with almost raw broccoli and other similar, hardly cooked vegetables; again I had to send it back and sustain myself with cheese and biscuits, The newly appointed hotel manager was sympathetic and understanding and withdrew the bill in it's entirety, apologising profusely, but the damage was done, although I appreciated and excepted his gesture. Perhaps the chef has now been replaced and the new hotel manager is 'on top' of the culinary shortcomings, we wish him well, but let this be a warning. I have considered carefully, and delayed, in posting this rather damning review.

« Gables know how to recruit the best staff. »

My husband and I stayed at The Gables overnight while visiting the area. The check in staff were lovely. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The hospitality tray contained some yummy biscuits, the usual tea and coffee, and some hot chocolate - nice touch. We had a drink in the bar which was comfortable and modern. Breakfast was great. There was a full buffet including all that you'd want on a traditional fry up including black pudding and mushrooms. There was stacks of preserves, continental breakfast items, cereals, juices etc. What made the stay so good was the staff. Reception, breakfast front of house, bar service - everyone was so warm and welcoming. The Gables certainly know how to recruit the best staff! Would I go again? Definitely yes, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in that area.

    « Reasonable »

Stayed here for two nights while on business and it's what you expect from a Best Western. Overall the hotel and facilities delivered exactly what I needed for the short amount of time I was there. Staff were friendly. Rooms were clean and bed was comfy. Bathroom was looking a little dated however. Plenty of available parking even when arriving at 11pm. Personally I was a little disappointed in the quality of the cooked breakfast on the first day, but saying that, it was all edible and there was plenty of other choice for the second morning of my stay.

« Second time here and just as good »

We stopped here before on our way to Devon. With its proximity to the motorway and being next to Slimbridge, its makes an ideal place to take a nights break away from it all.The dinner was just what we needed after a drive down from Yorkshire. The room was nice and clean and the staff couldn't be more helpful. The breakfast choice was good as you could have fish besides the normal full English. Yes we will be back when travelling down again especially as we are members of the wetlands trust.

« Quiet rural location near Bristol »

Booked at the last minute this is a pleasant rural hotel catering for the local population and visitors alike. The staff are excellent, reception was very helpful allowing me early access to my room, I was especially grateful having travelled a while. The location is just off the M5 easy to find, and there are some lovely local inns to visit for real ale. I booked Dinner , B & B and enjoyed a surprisingly good meal, the chef would appear to know his business as the food had an edge with very enjoyable flavors. My room was well equipped, good and fast Internet. A little cramped with a double bed, but most acceptable. The Guest book was excellent, clear and informative. Although only September the hotel has already a formidable number of christmas meals and events booked, a clear indication that the hotel meets the local needs in the regard. A well stocked bar and pleasant restaurant with a diverse menu In summary a lovely hotel , situated in a rural location, with easy access from the M5. Excellent staff and a creative chef..a good find!

    « Very nice hotel »

We stayed for a couple of nights, seduced by a couple of tickets for Slimbridge nearby. Excellent room; pleasant but unobtrusive service, and a very nice breakfast. Did suggest that a new toaster was required. Or at least an overhaul of the present one. But all hotels seem to suffer from inefficient toasters!

    « Comfortable night »

Stayed on business for the umpteenth time. This hotel was okay 10 years ago but is crying out for some modernising. The staff are great but the rooms are tired. Shame as it could be very nice. I hope there are plans to modernise soon

« Will definitely visit again »

I purchased a voucher through Groupon for overnight stay at nearby hotel with breakfast and zoo tickets for 2 adults & up to 2 children. Excellent value. £89 for us. So I didn't really know what to expect. Natalie on reception was very friendly and welcoming. And nothing was too much trouble. The zoo tickets were actually valid for a year which I didn't know. We had a family room, which was a big size and comfortable. There was a proper bed for my son (not just a sofa bed). The bathroom spacious and both rooms clean. There was tea and coffee facilities in the room. The breakfast in the morning was delicious, self service buffet. Very good choice. My only grumble would be the toaster, it's one of those ones where the bread moves along the elements and doesn't hardly toast the first time around but burns if you do it twice! Would be nice to have nicer bread than just basic sliced. We've already booked to go back for an event they are hosting at Christmas. ????

    « Comfortable & Good Value »

The hotel is situated off the A38 but our room 119 on the ground floor was at the back so couldn't hear any traffic noise, all the staff we met were friendly and welcoming, the room itself was an average size, the bed was comfy and linen clean and fresh, a few scuff marks on the walls and skirting but nothing too bad, the shower was good, powerful with plenty of hot water. We sat in the bar and ate in the evening, thought the food was really good, tasty and well cooked we also enjoyed breakfast the next morning liked that there were plenty of staff taking care of coffee, tea etc and again all very polite and friendly. Would definitely recommend this hotel for a relaxed no frills stay,

    « Lovely stay »

Stayed for two nights with the hotels "summer" deal. Very good value.the evening meal included on the first night was very good. We both had steak which was cooked perfectly. The only downside of the meal was the strawberry pavlova which was actually a merangue on top of another with cream and strawberries in the middle...not what I expected but still tasty. The service from all staff was excellent . The room was large with large comfortable bed. The room was clean very comfortable, yes there was a little road noise but we were aware of that when we booked! All in all a very enjoyable stay.thank you.

« JUST USED THE RESTAURANT »

Very pleasant hotel and restaurant, easy to find, large car park. Made you feel very welcome. Menu is interesting and trying to be different, we liked it.Very good service, food was excellent and well presented, extensive wine list. A good evening out, restaurant lacks any views and not many windows but that does not affect the food.

« Quiet on the inside, a bit noisy on the outside »

The Gables Hotel is situated on the A38, a few minutes drive from the M5, J14. The Rooms are quite compact, although they're a similar size to other hotels in this price range. It was pretty quiet when we stayed, which meant that breakfast time was not one big mad rush. Breakfast is a good buffet spread, with a decent choice of cereals, fruit, hot food, and drink. We didn't have an evening meal with the hotel, so am unable to comment on the food quality for this meal, but don't see any reason why it should be bad considering the quality at breakfast time. As is becoming usual in hotels, wi-fi is pretty fast in your room. Great views from our room which was rear facing, although not every rear facing room will have this. When we stayed, it was 2 full complete days of warm sunshine (yeah, I know and it was Summer as well), so we had a sit down outside on the patio furniture. Whilst it's lovely to sit outside, the hotel is right next to the A38, so expect regular speeding traffic noise. Bottom line: a decent place to stay with no grumbles from us, just happy memories.

    « An ok visit.... »

As we were guided to our rooms there was a strong smell of manure in the corridors. I stayed in room 304 which I have to admit wasn't the most practical - to get the room you have to walk passed 2 conference rooms - both with see-through doors, so whilst you're in your Jim jams there will be people in the opposite room in shirt and ties - not the best situation to be in. We was also greeted by many spiders so beware if you're scared of them, the bathroom was quite mouldy - see my photos. Even though I've probably been a bit harsh but truthful with the above, the breakfast was amazing! There was everything that you could imagine from black pudding to salami and fruit - really enjoyed the breakfast.

    « A good experience! »

Highly recommended! Just an overnight stay, prior to visiting a nearby garden, at this well located and comfortable hotel . Really pleasant, helpful and smiling staff, nothing too much bother - providing excellent service. Well presented food with a wide choice of breakfast items. (We were even able to have soya milk!) Our room was modern, well furnished and spotlessly clean. We hope to visit again later in the year but would say that, being quite close to the M5, it is ideal for both individual visitors and also those requiring business/conference facilities.

« not too far down the road »

had a very good deal for this hotel, short journey to get here, visited slimbridge and Berkeley castle. not to well sign posted and had to brake severely to avoid shooting past, although some of the furniture was of a seventies kind i.e. storage cupboards the room was fine enough. breakfast was plentiful but could have been hotter. placed centrally between Bristol and Gloucester, plenty to see and do .

    « Lovely stay »

My wife and I stayed 4 pleasant nights at The Gables. The hotel is easy to find, not far from the M5 and an ideal location if you are like us exploring the area eg Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, South Wales etc. Large car park. We were in room 122 on the ground floor at the back of the hotel (we may have heard traffic from the A38 if we were at the front of the hotel as we sleep with our windows open) which is a standard double room which we found very comfortable and spacious. We were however woken up by someone throwing tools into something about 0630. We didn't have evening meal in hotel as we were away in the evening so I cannot comment on that, however breakfast was well stocked and plentiful I had poached eggs everyday which were cooked to perfection. Overall the hotel was clean and tidy, with a warm atmosphere. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and a credit to the owners. Would we stay again? Most definitely. Would we recommend to others? Yes.

« overnight trip and zoo visit »

We only stayed one night in room 120. The room was basic but fine although a little tired but the bathroom needed some improvement however it was ok for us for one night. The experience was greatly enhanced by the friendliness of the staff, wonderful evening meal and superb breakfast. I have not stayed in a hotel where there was such a great choice for breakfast, all very fresh and beautifully cooked.

    « Weekend stay »

Generally a good hotel with helpful staff. Rooms were of good size although power of water flow in the shower was a little lacking.Easy access from the M5 and large car park. Breakfast was of a high standard with a good range of options.

    « 2 night stay »

The exterior is nice however that is about all that is good about the hotel. The rooms are very dated and in need of an upgrade. The bar area is expensive and uncomfortable. The first morning we had breakfast it was good but we think only because we got there so early. The next morning we where about half an hour later and there was nothing left. That isn't an exaggeration either no cooked breakfast left or fresh juices of any kind just empty bottles and when we went to sit down none of the tables where set up even though over half of them where empty. We just gave up and left after a piece of toast each. Overall, for the price massively underwhelming and disappointing and expected a lot more.

« Very enjoyable venue for family get together & party »

We visited The Gables Hotel, Falfield for a family birthday celebration and stayed for 2 nights. Gables is part of the Best Western symbol group and is a fairly typical 3 star hotel trying to attract a mixture of business & leisure trade. Generally I would say the hotel and its rooms looked on the tired and dated side. Our room was average in size, contained the usual facilities for a 3 star hotel, although the double bed was on the softer side. The bathroom was also tired but the shower over the bath was thankfully very powerful - something which older hotels can sometimes suffer from. What allows this hotel to stand apart from other similar hotels of this standard and age was both the quality of food and the friendly/efficient staff. We had a group 'afternoon tea' of sandwiches, scones and cakes for lunch on Saturday all of which were excellent quality and flavour. Our evening sit down dinner was a three course meal for c.35, with three choices for each course pre-ordered. The food was served quickly for each course and the quality and presentation of each was excellent, which can so often not be the case when large numbers are catered for. The function room in which the group were entertained for both lunch and dinner was fairly standard for a hotel but was extremely thoughtfully decorated, for both events, which helped to create the right atmosphere. The staff at the hotel were really efficient and helpful, at all times during our stay, which helped to make our stay so enjoyable - from efficient food delivery, finding leftover cakes for late guests, accommodating many breakfast table re-configurations to allow family groups to sit together. Our rooms for the weekend were good value, including breakfast (which many want to charge extra for!). I would certainly recommend the Gables as a suitable place to gather with family & friends.

    « Lovely hotel!! »

The hotel is very well looked after with friendly staff. The room we had was a very generous size with a lovely big bed. Can't fault the hotel apart from not having air con in the bar area. But we will happily go back to this hotel in future.

« Over priced and dated rooms. »

We stayed for 2 nights in June as we were attending a wedding nearby. The room was a decent size and fairly comfortable but very dated. On the first night I had a bath, the shower and bath leaked considerably leaving us with a flooded bath room and no clean towels. My husband went to reception for more towels and reported the leak. Next morning the same thing happened, we again spoke to reception who said someone would visit our room later and look. We had the "do not disturb" sign on our door until lunchtime as we were getting ready to attend the wedding. This was taken off when we left. We again had a load of wet towels which we left on the bathroom floor expecting the bathroom to be checked, clean towels to be replaced and the room cleaned but on arriving back late in the evening our room had not been visited at all. We again had to go to reception the next morning for more clean towels. On checking out the reception simply said thank you and goodbye, no mention of how was our stay... Also on the first morning there were a group of men talking loudly directly outside our door. There are meeting rooms opposite our rooms. This was a long time before 9am. I appreciate the hotel has to hold meetings/conferences but could other rooms be provided for them to talk in? The happiness and comfort of all paying guests should be considered. There was a good choice for breakfast but average quality of food. The lady in the restaurant however was friendly and helpful. For the price it was a very disappointing stay and I would not return.

    2
    « Awful Customer Service »

Five star prices and one star service. Terrible customer service, rooms close to the car park and front of the hotel are noisy due to A38 main road. The reception staff look tired and uninterested and the price category for this hotel resembles that of London and is therefore not accurate for this area. Poor value, poor service and overall a poor experience.

    « Summer party evening »

We attended a summer party evening which was excellent value for money with a 1 night stop over with breakfast. Food was of a very high standard , staff all polite and helpful Clean and nicely presented hotel all though our room was a little tired decor wise but it was comfy and very clean

    « Disabled Access »

On checking in the gentleman on reception summoned a female as the room I had been allocated was on the 1st Floor (problem was no lift) and at the furthest point in the hotel. She refused to change my rooms saying the hotel rooms had been allocated. The gentleman did offer to take my bags upstairs but in fairness was busy checking people in so friends took our bags up Also there is a step up to enter the bar which didn't affect me me but would present problems for wheelchair/scooter users Shame this happened as the bar and restaurant and other reception staff could not have been more helpful or friendly.

Absolutely fantastic hotel. Reception staff were really friendly when checking us in. Rooms aren't big but great for a 1 night stay. Bathroom clean with the usually in it. Beds comfy with plenty of pillows. Good could be better for breakfast but dinner was fantastic and not really over charged seeing as there is nothing close by. Would stay again.

    « Stained sheets! »

We booked a two night stay at The Gables in a superior room, we were shocked when we entered our room, dated, tired and grubby! When pulling the covers back on the bed I noticed a big yellow stain but as it was so late I decided to leave it to the morning to mention it, I put a clean towel across the stain so that I could sleep on it. The next day I wrote a note for housekeeping kindly asking them to change the sheet, I even put a smiley face, I put the note across the stain so that they would have to remove it to strip the bed. We arrived back in our room late the second night and it didn't even occur to me that the stained sheet would still be there......but it was, but what made it worse was that the note was no where to be seen so they had obviously removed the evidence which I found really dis-respectful, I marched down to reception and told the male receptionist that I was note happy, he said he would make a note of my complaint, I then said that as it was so late and that we were leaving in the morning I would put up with it but that I was really annoyed, at no point did he offer to have the sheet changed then and there. We decided to skip breakfast the next morning as to be honest we just wanted to leave, on checking out the same receptionist was still there and the duty manager and I told him that I really wasn't happy, he then mentioned that the receptionist had offered to change the sheet, and when I looked back at him his face said it all! The manager then asked him if I had paid my bill giving the impression that he would have sorted something out for me if I hadn't, because I had he just said he would mention my complaint. I walked away once again feeling let down. If I can give any advice, please think again before staying here, I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to somebody else!!

« Very good stopover and handy for WWT Slimbridge »

We stopped at The Gables Hotel on a Sunday night prior to visiting WWT Slimbridge the following day. The hotel was easy to find a couple of miles off the M5 and there was plentiful free parking. Check-in was friendly and efficient, as was check-out the following morning. Our room was of a good size with all of the expected facilities. There was a large & comfortable bed and the bathroom was also large with a good & hot shower. The free wi-fi signal was strong & reliable, which is important to me, and we weren't troubled by road noise from the adjacent A38. We had a drink in the bar which offered a couple of real ales which was appreciated. Breakfast was of a good quality and set us up well for the day ahead. There was even fried bread for me which was an increasingly rare treat! The hotel is particularly convenient if you are visiting WWT Slimbridge which was just a 10-minute drive away. It was also extremely good value on a Sunday night and we certainly would stay here again when we revisit Slimbridge.

    « Enjoyable Sunday Lunch »

Called in today and was surprised that there was a carvery as well as the bar menu. After enquiring as to whether there was a table for two..we were taken to the restaurant and seated. A waitress took our drinks order and swiftly brought them to us. I fully expected someone to take our order .but after waiting for sometime, no one appeared.. .eventually we caught the eye of a waiter ..who explained the procedure for the carvery. The choice was Beef, Turkey and Gammon..with all the trimmings. I must say all the food was kept hot and everything was cooked to perfection. We tucked in....alas we couldn't find any room for a pudding..but maybe next time.

    « Perfect for business »

Ample parking, nIce breakfast (as I arrived early for my meeting) friendly staff. Nothing too much trouble. Attended a course for the day and would consider this hotel if I needed a training venue. Didn't stay overnight so can't comment. Nice surroundings. Very accessible to the M5 (and therefore the M4)

« Ok food - overpriced for what you get! »

I have been to the Gables twice for food now, neither times I have been particularly impressed. Found staff unfriendly both times...the first time I requested a normal glass for my water instead of a large wine glass and I was told no because "that's not how they do things" which I thought was odd for a simple request. Today I had a sandwich which was supposed to be served with "homemade root vegetable crisps", instead we all got served plain Doritos....not what I would expect for £5.95 per person! The bread was also extremely dry on one side - clearly had been left out too long or not kept properly. Food is ok but for the quality, overpriced!

« Wonderful nights sleep on a fab bed »

Stayed for one night and had a fabulous nights sleep . Breakfast was abit disappointing - 6 minute wait for fried eggs! so didn't bother as the rest of my breakfast was already on my plate. Staff very efficient - cleared my table whilst I was getting my toast

    « Murder Mystery »

I attended a murder mystery night at the Gables on 10th June and was impressed. The staff were friendly and very well organised. The food was efficiently served during the event and was very nice. We stayed the night after the murder mystery. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. The buffet breakfast in the morning was excellent. Well cooked and great choice. Well done to the Gables. Oh, and although I wasn't really looking forward to the murder mystery I actually enjoyed it and the actors did a great job.

    « No vegetarian options »

went for dinner with friends and there was no vegetarian option on the menu. Had to have the mushroom risotto which came with duck breast which I did not have. Was originally charged the full price but this was reduced by £5 as I did not have the duck. I paid more for my risotto than friends who had salmon and haddock!

    3
    « Convenient hotel »

Quite a basic but well located hotel just off the M5 and reasonably close to Bristol. It is clean and we got a free upgrade to a King size bed room. Food was ok but nothing special, staff seemed to be friendly but inexperienced. I would stay again.

    4
    « Murder night »

This was the second murder mystery night at The Gables we've been to. We love the atmosphere of these games & the production group are quite good. The food is adequate- in fact last night was better than the previous time. Obviously the menu choices are limited for an event of this type and you have to pre order when you book. I requested some dairy free alternatives and was very pleased with my dishes. There was a bit of a cock up when we arrived as our group of 6 weren't sat on one table but the manager sorted us out with a table of our own which turned out better.

« Well organised evening of fun! »

We recently stayed at the Gables for the George Michael tribute as a girls night with close family. The evening was fun and well organised. The food was lovely and the staff were kind and attentive. The breakfast the following day was just what you'd expect! A big English breakfast, perfect for a big night the evening before! The offer for the tribute, dinner, with bed and breakfast was great value for money and we really enjoyed ourselves! There were a couple of strange tasting beers served, but as soon as we mentioned it management immediately sorted it out. This kind of service and attentiveness is excellent and we were all really happy with our stay! Thanks to the team!

    « Best Western -NOT »

Reception service good , bistro service shoddy, food TERRIBLE. Spoke to the manager before departure and all he kept saying was 'Thanks for the feedback' It doesn't help that the stay although short, was so poor. Due to location and my preferred resting place being full, I stopped here. Not again.

« Overall good - would stay again »

Great service from reception team, really pleasant and efficient - even organised the return of an item of left property by post for me at no cost, which was much appreciated. The room that I stayed in was very nice as well, clean, modern and comfortable - great nights sleep and no disturbances. The restaurant was a bit of a mixed bag for me - service was extremely friendly and willing, but there was a surprising amount of confusion about what dinner bed and breakfast allowances include and several of my party were charged incorrectly because of this and had to contact the hotel post stay to clear up the issues. Menu in the restaurant was ok - bit simplistic and no free range options that I could see, but the food that i ordered was cooked to a decent standard. Didn't blow my socks off but didn't make me want to complain either. Overall, a good experience and I would stay again if I was in the area again.

I have used the Best western Gables for about 20 months. Service is always excellent and hotel great value for money. Hotel is clean staff are very friendly and helpful will continue to use this hotel.

    « Slimbridge trip »

Stayed here for two nights as we were going to Slimbridge. Rooms ok but nothing special, furniture and bit dated in room. Everything worked ok and staff were friendly. Breakfast was again ok but nothing special. Good prices and served it's purpose well.

    « Overnight Stop »

Just one night stop on way home to Cornwall. Hotel is just a short, convenient distance from the M5. Very friendly welcome at reception and again in the bar when we went for our evening meal. Comfortable room. Good breakfast. All very satisfactory. Thank you.

    « Visit to Slimbridge »

We had wanted to visit Slimbridge again so took up the offer the Gables had sent us for their Spring break of a two nights stay with dinner the first night. It was our third visit to the Gables and overall we were very pleased with our stay and had a large ground floor room with a large ( comfortable) bed. We were restricted to Thursday and Friday nights with this offer. The breakfasts were very good with a wide choice although to our taste the bread was of poor quality. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our dinner the first night was good though my husband was disappointed with his dessert. We had dinner early and we dined alone!! - other folk did come in as we were finishing. The second night we ate at a table in the bar and enjoyed a simpler one course meal. We felt it was very good value for money and was cheaper than most B&B's and with a dinner thrown in.

« Good hotel - restaurant put a downer on it »

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights, overall the hotel was really nice. The check in was friendly and the room was nice and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely, particularly the hot buffet. However, what let it down was the restaurant. We decided to eat here on the first night so when we checked in we decided to book. Originally we booked for half six however decided this was a bit early so wanted to book for around seven however were told we couldn't get a table till eight, so we decided to just have a late tea. When we got to the restaurant at eight though, there were only two other tables of people in there, despite being told it was fully booked! When ordering drinks I was told that they didn't do glasses of rose wine, only full bottles, then was confused as it turned out they did. The waiter then told my boyfriend (when he asked what beer they had) that they had Fosters and a beer which 'comes in a little bottle', but didn't know the name or anything else. The starter we ordered - antipasto - had hardly any meat on it at all, certainly not worth the money. The upside was that the mains were nice, my duck was cooked perfectly as was my boyfriends steak, however I still believe they were over priced for the amount you get. I would highly recommend the hotel, but not the restaurant - sorry!

« Trip to Slimbridge wetland centre »

Booked this trip to the wetland centre a month or so back to include The Gables hotel in the visit. Hotel staff were very welcoming and pleasent and the hotel public areas were clean and fresh. Breakfast for both mornings was served by very pleasent staff but, the food was a bit on the low quality side. We had 1 evening meal in the hotel and this was pretty good all round. The room was a free upgrade from standard and was a good size with the usual tea/coffee and ensuite. The bedroom was fine but, the ensuite could do with a bit of an update as black mould had taken root between some tiles and the toilet appeared to have a small leak around the back as there was always a small puddle of water evident. This hotel is a 3 star, what more is there to say

« Brilliant hotel right location »

We had a lovely one night stop over at this hotel. It's a great location just off the motorway as we where travelling to Plymouth the next day. We had a lovely meal in the resurant and a lovely cooked breakfast. The staff are really helpful.

    « unexpectedly superb »

1 overnight stay with my wife to attend a friends birthday event locally. I travel the world and stay in hotels all the time. On this occasion I upgraded to a superior room which normally in other hotels just gives more space. In the Gables we got a jaccuzzi bath, 4 poster bed and other additions that made all the difference. breakfast was really nice. The room was spotlessly clean, staff really friendly. I will definitely look at staying here again.

« Convenient Location with friendly staff »

The hotel is convenient for access to the M4 and M5 motorways. Staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is good and reasonably priced. Without a lift it is preferable to select a ground-floor room in the rear of the hotel.

    « Pleasant stay »

Lovely hotel, super comfy bed, nice room. On the main road so a little noisy but that can't be helped. The staff are friendly and helpful but the food is a little average. Nice selection of food for breakfast. I had a vegetarian breakfast which was lovely. My friends who are the full English weren't impressed with the sausages though. All in all a perfectly pleasant stay.

    « Family wedding »

The staff were very friendly, however when asking a question the staff I spoke to didn't answer the questions correctly. The cleanliness off the rooms was ok but there was a lot of dust on higher level surfaces.

    « Weekend break »

Warm welcome from staff on our arrival. We had an evening meal which was superb, well presented as well as very tasty. Our room was lovely with a four poster bed for an extra touch of luxury for our short stay. Breakfast was again well presented and set us up for the day ahead. All in all we would visit again and found our stay very enjoyable. We would recommend a stay here.

« Warm welcome and lovely breakfast. »

My daughter and I stayed on a Groupon offer. We were given a warm and friendly welcome. The room was clean and everything was great for us. Breakfast was delicious. Lots of choice and all freshly cooked and piping hot. Check out was smooth and easy and again very friendly. We will definitely stay again and next time try the restaurant.

    5
« Improved since previous visit »

The hotel has upped its level of service delivery since the last stay. The bar and restaurant menus have changed and in my personal opinion have improved, as well as new and speedy Wi-Fi being available throughout the hotel.

    5
« Ideal for a stop over to Wales »

Used this Hotel as a stop over to our mini break to wales (Pembrokeshire), allowing us to travel quickly via M4 or take a pleasurable scenic trip mid wales to Pembrokeshire. Basic facilities but excellent restaurant and Breakfast. Room excellent with plenty of Parking. Room get good internet reception.

    « Overnight stay »

Stayed with an overnight package to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Very nice accommodation with excellent food and service. We have had meals here before and have never been disapointed with the quality of the food & presentation. Very good range of breakfast choice with piping hot food.

    « Very pleasant »

Clean hotel friendly staff and nice rural location conveniently near to the M5. Adjoining family room perfect for us and our seven year old...nice breakfast and reasonable evening meal...bought as a wowcher with zoo tickets great value for money

    « Enjoyable stay. »

An enjoyable stay; friendly staff willing to help. Room and bed were comfy and nicely equipped. Slight quibble would be the road noise but this subsided overnight. Excellent beakfast; very reasonably priced bar menu but this was reflected in the food quality, it was perfectly acceptable but maybe not *** standard. All in all the plusses fully outweigh the minor negatives.

« Large Function Extremely Successful »

This was a dinner/dance function for over 100 people. The facilities for such a function are excellent with attractive decor. The dining tables are round and seated 8 in comfort, very nicely equipped and decorated. There is a good-sized dance floor, which is a sufficent distance from the dining area to permit conversation whilst still enjoying the ambiance from the music - an excellent disco sensitive to the likely tastes of its customers. The dedicated bar was convenient for both the dining area and dance area. The excellent staff provided a very well-managed function and every required service in a cheerful and friendly manner. One small disappointment was that the quality of the food was not quite as good as expected, particularly the roast beef, which was really just "pub grub" standard. However, the whole evening was such a whopping success, we will be back for more! Quite a few people stayed at the hotel and reported it to be excellent accommodation, but we did not since we live locally.

    4
    « Great stay »

We visited the gables on a groupon deal, which included bed and breakfast. Check in was good except as there was a function on we weren't told where to go for breakfast etc or where the bar was. The room was good the only thing I would say is that the bathroom fan is on every time you put the light on and was very noisy. Breakfast was great the food was good quality Not sure if we would stay again as it was a bit far out of Bristol then we hoped for

« Nice place to stop »

We booked this as a stop over going to Devon.Best decision we have made, it was so easy to find from the motorway and it was such good weather we spent a day at the Slimbridge Reserve which was 15 mins drive away.We had a nice relaxing meal in the restaurant and a good nights sleep plus a grand english breakfast to set us on our way. The only bad point was a grubby shower mat, but thats easily removed.

excellent service. the only problem i had was with the bar food, the gammon staek and chips were not exactly up to scratch and the seabass was not as expected. apart from that everything fine..Breakfast was very good, so i dont understand the differenct in food. quallity

« Yet Another Nice Stay »

My wife & I stayed in our favourite room (408), requested via Natalie & provided. The recently decorated rooms are nicely done, the new curtains & headboards are a welcome improvement. The most improved element was the en suite floor & shower. You can now enjoy a well regulated temperature & pressured shower. The bar and bar staff provided a nice end to the evening. Our breakfast was great as usual & set us up nicely for the day. We enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the improved ambiance simply adds to the comfort. The GM Andrew went out of way to ensure we had enjoyed our stay as did Natalie in ensuring our room request was actions.

« Gables Hotel, Falfield, South Glos. »

A very pleasant hotel with friendly and helpful staff. The breakfasts were excellent with quality, local ingredients. We didn't have an evening meal. The rooms were very comfortable (though I prefer a firmer pillow) with all the facilities that one expects. I was especially pleased to find a Gideon Bible in the room, having been greatly helped by reading one when in distress many years ago. The hotel is handily placed for visiting Slimbridge Bird Sanctuary which is well worth seeing, and also for the Cotswolds. We received a free entry voucher for Bristol Zoo which was also good. We would certainly visit again.

    5
« Great hotel good value friendly staff »

We stayed in a family room as we were attending a party there. The room was a triple room and on request the hotel out an additional fold up bed for us so we could accommodate our family. There was still enough room to move around so it was fine and really good value. The room was clean and well decorated. The bathroom was also newly decorated although the shower did go cold every now and again which was a bit annoying. Breakfast was good, buffet style and plenty to choose from although it finished very promptly at 10am and the clocks had gone forward that day so it did seem a bit early. My daughter left a teddy behind in the room and the staff tracked us down and arranged for us to get it back which was very kind of them and often hotels don't bother which was very good of them. Overall a good stay and we would go back there again without hesitation.

« Comfortable accomodation , Good Value, Good Location »

Looking for a good value, comfortable hotel in a convenient location for the Bristol and Bath area, for a short break, we booked a room at the Gables for 4 nights bed and breakfast on their Leisure Package. Blessed with 4 days of blue skies and sunshine, we were able to visit Bristol, Bath, Clevedon , National Trust houses and various other locations in the area with ease. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed, evening meals in the bar or restaurant ( we ate in each night ) were good and the breakfasts excellent. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. All in all a very pleasant stay and good value for money

Overall the Gables Hotel is Very Good. Excellant Food, the staff were polite and helpful. The only critisim I have is that they don't cater for the disabled. There is no lift or ''walk in'' shower, I am disabled so I could not have a shower. Fortunately I was given a down stairs room.

    « Return visit »

Having stayed here a few years ago for a wedding I decided to treat my partner to a night away Dinner B&B.. Room very clean and tidy and reception staff helpful. The food served in restaurant was pretty average .. Prawn cakes for starters looked and tasted more like stuffing balls. I had salmon for main which was sadly burnt... When asked by the waitress if everything was ok I did say no and was offered for it to be replaced ... Hence leaving me partner to eat alone.. I declined and picked at what was edible.. Waited over 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive at the table... Hot sticky toffee pudding served luke warm and a cheesecake which I can only assume came from Iceland. Not once in 2 hours did a restaurant or duty manager attend the restaurant but the young waitresses, in fairness, did their best. Huge hen party going on in the function room which did not effect us although at 8am I the morning the outside reception area was covered in empty glasses, bread rolls & cigarette butts with no attempt with any staff cleaning up. On the plus side the buffet breakfast was really good and plenty to choose from. On check out the reception and duty manager kindly took the price of the salmon off of the bill! This is a 3 star hotel so please do not expect anything other than 3 star !

« An Excellent Overnight Stay »

This Hotel is indeed one which we wished we had found earlier.. All aspects of this Hotel, from the Bedrooms and Bathrooms to the Restaurant and Public Areas are spotless and well maintained.. The Staff are efficient yet friendly and helpful.. The Restaurant Menu and Wine list offer a good choice at very reasonable costs... The Breakfast is Wonderful and plentiful.. We will definately return now we have found this little gem, which for us is so convenient to the M5 being just off Junction 14, yet peaceful and quiet.

« Last minute booking only standard rooms available....never again!!! »

This is my second visit to The Gables, on this occasion I booked at last minute as in booked on the same day that I wished to check in literally within hours of check in time opening. On this visit there were no executive rooms available so I had no choice but to book a standard room although I am used to higher class stays. Also having a Best Western card I was hoping for an upgrade but on this occasion it didn't happen as the hotel was full. On check in I was greeted by one of the duty managers and the welcome was pleasant. I stayed two nights, I did not eat dinner in the restaurant on this visit however I did eat breakfast and it is the standard set up of buffet style whether you prefer hot or cold food. I ordered room service the first night which carries a £3 charge however I didn't mind this as I was too tired to sit and dine downstairs. I ordered a cheese jacket potato which according to the menu comes with homemade root vegetable crisps and a side salad, with a side of bread and butter and a pot of tea for one. The menu is not accurate as the crisps I received were tortilla chips certainly not homemade. Also the bread and butter was also wrong as it is Flora not butter. The tea was nice and with real milk not packets. I know that all sounds picky about the menu but if you are going to make claims of homemade and butter this should be at least delivered on. Thankfully a gratuity charge is not automatically added so I was able to write down an amount I thought was suitable since I didn't have any change for an actual tip. The food arrived promptly and I cannot fault the quality but the attention to detail should be key especially for a B. Western. The standard room is similar to other budget hotels, basic and cheap. I would stay at this hotel again and plan to later this year however not in a standard room as the room is freezing. I had to keep the curtains closed and the radiator up high to maintain a comfortable warmth in the room otherwise it is freezing as the windows let in so much cold air. (Room 402) The bed was a little lumpy but mostly ok, the pillows firm as normal. The room was well kept and clean the housekeeping staff are friendly and efficient, in refreshing the room as mine was done whilst I went down for breakfast and when I came back up the lady was just finishing. A word of warning to people with sensitive skin do not use the liquid hand soap provided as I came out in a rash on my hands after using it which has still not disappeared. Unfortunately at this end of the corridor with the other double standard rooms people are not as quiet when entering or leaving their rooms. Also the lighting is totally different in the corridor, where the executive four poster and king size bed rooms are the corridor has dimly lit mood lighting I assume to encourage a peaceful atmosphere and reduce noise, then when you get to the standard room section it is normal bright lights so obviously people that book the standard rooms don't get quite the same treatment as the executives. The shower is low powered but its hot so you cant complain, although the set up of the large shower screen is a little odd, as to get in you have to open the shower screen to gain access otherwise the toilet is in the way for you to get into the shower / bath easily. Of course when opening the shower screen with the shower on warming up, water tends to drip all over the floor. In summary a lovely hotel which I will return to but definitely not in a standard room even if I do travel alone.

    « Decent hotel »

We stayed here for four very enjoyable nights in a comfortable room. Breakfast was of a high standard as was evening dinner apart from one slight hiccup that was soon put right by a most genial and attentive manager. The staff were, without exception, helpful, polite and friendly.

    « No shower! »

Comfortable hotel and handy if you're on the M5. Rooms was fine. Staff friendly (cleaners more so than the suits!). Breakfast OK but suffered from being buffet style so expect overdone (ie dried out food) if you don't arrive as the servery is being refreshed, The big downer for us was the shower which did not work at all apart from a momentary blast of hot water when first turned on. We mentioned it at check out... "sorry, we'll report it to maintenance!". No suggestion of compensation. Shame really......

    « Winter Break »

We checked in here with friends. We found the hotel very pleasant. Our room was as expected from a Best Western Hotel. Although, we experienced some noise from the radiator, it was fixed without delay. If we decided to visit this area again, we would definitely stay here.

    5
    « Very Enjoyable »

Lovely stay with our friends for 3 nights Our room was at the front and very comfortable The only difficulty we found was with the lighting as there was no central light which made the room quite dark and having difficulty with our eyesight it caused a slight problem But sorry to say we did not bring it to the attention of the management at the time Nevertheless it did not really detract from the overall quality of the room We dined in the restaurant on the 3 evenings and found the meals to be very good and all staff to be very friendly and helpful We will not hesitate to stay again or recommend to friends

    5
    « Two Night Stay »

Excellent stay. Service was first rate. Room was clean, very well presented and ideal for our needs. Location was ideal for visiting the Wildfowl & Wetland Centre at Slimbridge, Gloucester & Bristol. We liked everything about the hotel and strongly recommend it to others.

    3
    « Average Hotel »

The hotel was clean and tidy, although the room was in need of a little cheering up. Also, the food choice was limited, and clearly pre-prepared, judging by the non-availability of one of the menu items. My wife's food was served less hot than it should have been. Having said that, the hotel management did account for this when dealing with the bill, which was appreciated. One more thing, a rip really, it might be best to give directions from the M5. My Satnav took me away from the hotel.

    « A good stopover point »

Stayed here for one night on returning from a business trip - on my way back to Cornwall. Handy for the motorway and well away from the usual traffic closer to Bristol. Had dinner in the bar watching football on the box. Food was OK and service was very good. Reasonable choice of beers and wines as you would normally expect from a Best Western. Room was very pleasant and of course spotlessly clean with a big bed which I appreciate. Had a late breakfast which although was a buffet was well cooked and not all dried up. Again staff at breakfast were very pleasant and helpful. First stay here but it definitely won't be my last, an ideal spot to break a long journey.

« shocking the only word i can use »

Firstly, I have travelled all around Britain on business for approximately 20yrs, and stayed in a great variety of standard of hotels and this is the very first time I have written any sort of response (bearing in mind I have had some poor experiences). Secondly, my company provides credit card details to provide pre arranged rate for DB and breakfast with a £** allowance for an evening meal and soft drinks. Today I was requested to leave the hotel due to not providing a swipe of a personal credit card. Yesterday when I arrived after travelling from Glasgow, I was requested to provide a credit card swipe in the event that I over spend on my companies allowance as per the hotels policy. I did explain to the receptionist that I do not have a credit card and I will happily pay for any additional expenditure that may occur whilst booking out. As I went for my evening meal the waitress then asked for my room number (provided) then proceeded to inform me that I had to make a credit card swipe prior to my meal. I explained I do not have a credit card and requested I be seated as per my arranged booking arrangements (and she can then take this up with the hotel manager). I was fed. NOTE: On arrival at the table I was presented with a menu that I would class as a bar menu (no separate bar/restaurant menu), I have to agree with other previous reviews that the food was of a pre-packaged maybe even microwaved (prawn fishcakes VERY dry and more brown than golden brown, pan fried duck breast ?? one colour all the way through and extremely tough, cylinder of potatoes solid and carrots looked so withered they had the same texture as an 80yr old Moroccan. Tell me you get this from freshly cooked? - and cheap though). As would anybody, I was feeling a little aggrieved by now, so later in the evening I went to the bar to order a small coke as I was still short £5 of my allowance, and yet again I was informed that this could not be actioned as I hadn't gave a card swipe. At this point I went to reception and did ask to speak to a manager to get this resolved, however the receptionist said it was sorted and I could now collect my coke. This morning when I was passing by the reception for my breakfast I noticed this lady say to the receptionist is that him. She then called me over to the desk and confronted me yet again about the hotels policy in providing a credit card swipe even presented me with the policy card. I will say that I was totally unimpressed with the way in which I was being dealt with and shown it, however at no point was I ever rude or use any inappropriate vocabulary. After telling the lady once again that I do not have a credit card therefor cannot supply one, I was then asked 'do you want me to call your company?' which I was quite happy for her to do so (which never happened). As we were at a stalemate situation I asked what is it you want me to do stay or leave, and the response was to leave. Many other hotels have the same policy however they do not discriminate or fail to understand that not everyone owns a credit card (especially as they already have credit card details from the booking company) and quite freely accept that I can pay anything over and above my allowance with cash either at the time or generally when booking out. Never have I experienced this in my life, absolutely deplorably handled.

    « Perfect stay »

We stayed here during a coach trip. Our room was very clean, warm and had a well stocked hospitality tray. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was plentiful and there was a good selection at breakfast with good quality produce. We could not find fault with anything and would definitely stay here again.

    « Fantastic stay »

Stayed at the Gables Saturday night its just off the M5 Motorway and easy to find , we were booked into the four poster room which was very spacious and spotless and modern , big TV on the wall at the foot of the bed, windows you can actually open , perfect ! Staff were fantastic and very friendly during our stay asked for two extra pillows , no problem . Breakfast in the morning was every thing you could wish for and we ate at the last half hour of service and everything was well stocked , think i had the best sausages ever ! Would love to come stay again many thanks ! :)

    « Excellent »

It was my partners 60th Birthday.and the hotel organised the champagne and fanatastic flowers for our room on arrival. The room was very good, clean and large.the shower was also a good size. The restaurant food was excellent and the service was on the ball. There was a good choice on the menu. Would recccomend it to any one and would certainly go out of my way to stay there. There was also free unlimited wifi,so we were able to skype our family in Turkey and America. Thank you to all the staff for a most enjoyable stay.

    « 80th Birthday Party »

Celebrated my Mothers' 80th Birthday with family in The Berkeley Suite on Saturday. A well organised event thanks to Emma, nice room, lovely finger buffet and attentive staff. The Duty Manager even took a photo of Mother and Father cutting the cake and presented them with a silver framed memory of the day. Highly recommended.

« Again, a great place to stay »

We stayed for two nights so that we can have a full day at WWT Slimbridge. The Gables is not only a conveniant distance to Slimbridge, but also the M5. The staff are their greatest asset, being friendly and helpful. Good food and nice rooms. We will return.

« Relaxing stay at The Gables »

Having often visited WWT Slimbridge on day trips, we decided to stay somewhere nearby overnight so we could stay later at WWT and return the following morning, and to avoid the drive home in the dark. Best Western hotels have not disappointed in the past and The Gables was the obvious choice. There were plenty of parking spaces at the side and at the back of the hotel. We were greeted on arrival by a friendly and efficient receptionist. We were allocated a four-poster room, which was huge, had plenty of storage space and all the amenities that one would expect. Being able to make a hot cup of tea was very welcome on a cold evening. Our room at the back of the hotel was quiet, very clean and nice and warm. WiFi was quick to connect. The bed was comfortable and we slept very well. The bathroom included a jacuzzi bath with an overbath shower. There was a non-slip bath mat provided. We had already eaten, so couldn't manage a full meal, however we went to the bar for a drink and had a dessert which was delicious. We studied the menu and have decided next time we will have a meal there - there were a number of vegetarian options and there was also a pizza menu at the bar. The breakfast was self-service and there was a good choice of cold and cooked food, cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurts. The staff were very attentive in showing us to our table and quick to clear away used crockery etc. All in all, this was a great place to stay and we definitely intend to return!

« Our third visit to The Gables »

We have now stayed at The Gables at Falfield on three occasions and have enjoyed our stay there each time. We look forward to returning before too long as it is very relaxing with helpful staff who do their best to look after their guests.

    « Amazing!! »

We booked a "Girls Night In" Package deal where we couldn't of had a better time!! Staff very friendly and willing to accommodate to make our stay as memorable as ever and it certainly was, food is amazing and plentiful, timings of food required was spot on , all staff were very friendly!! Highly recommended!!

« a very frendly and helpful people »

it was a nice cosy room heating was very warm and food was exceptional good, there is no lift but it is only two floors. It has a nice bar area, but a bit expensive but very nice. its ok for children aswell the staff in resterant is very helpful. we found it very comfortable but the beds we had were twin and moved away from the wall a bit so that was a bit frustrating.

    « Almost perfect »

Given the wrong type of room initially (having booked a King) right opposite a room with a crying/screaming baby. Reception quickly agreed to a change and to the correct sort of room. Staff at Dinner need to buck their ideas up - we were the first of three tables to be seated in a line; yet the second to have our orders taken; and the last to receive any food! All very apologetic, and the food was good, but they could/should have done much better. All staff very friendly and the hotel is comfortable and well placed. We had originally been booked in the Sunday after Christmas, but had needed to make a late change due to flooding, and Natalie in Reservations was very helpful and accommodating.

    3
    « Comfortable »

Having stayed at the Gables ten times over the last year, I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Some of the rooms are a little dated, however always clean and quiet. Plenty of food available in the breakfast buffet but towards the end of service some of it looks like it has been sat a while without refresh. On my last two visits the scheduled wake up call hasn't happened, so worth setting your own alarm just in case! Overall this hotel is pleasant and convenient for work and my first choice when I travel to this area. Doesn't feel luxurious and for that reason I wouldn't choose to stay for leisure.

    « Excellent Hotel »

We loved the down to earth, happy friendly feel to this hotel, but matched well with the professionalism you would expect from a major hotel. Great price and the biggest most comfortable bed you could imagine

    5
    « Another Great Stay »

We are always made to feel welcome & Natalie goes out of her way to allocate our favourite room. The recent make over has improved the look of the rooms & the general comfort of our stay. We always enjoy the hearty breakfast before checking out. We can not fault the management & staff. Highly recommended for a night or two get away, close to M5, not too far from Bristol & always clean with a nice bar & staff.

« Lovely food and great service in Gables Brasserie »

We visited this hotel restaurant for the first time last Saturday, having driven past it hundreds of times and never stopping! I wish we had found the restaurant sooner! Although we were the only people in there at that time, the service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. Well worth a visit. We'll definitely be back!

    « Friendly hotel »

Stayed New years eve, not involved in the function that was going on and did not disturb us.The hotel was welcoming with such friendly staff, from reception staff, bar staff and the maids. The room was comfortable with a huge bed and a lovely bath with loads of hot water. The evening meal and breakfast was brilliant again helped by such fantastic staff. Please share this review with the staff and you have a bunch of good ones !!!!!!!!

    « Excellent Christmas Break »

We had a very enjoyable Christmas break. The food was excellent and so was the atmosphere. Staff extremely attentive and helpful from reception through to chamber maids. Well done for their cheerfulness for working over the Christmas period. The room was very clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our festive stay. The only downside was the fact that there was a problem with their WIFI which meant we were unable to Skype our family on Christmas morning.

    3
    « Pleasant stay »

Impossible to adjust the thermostat in the room, and the child bed was placed right next to the radiator. The internett in the room was non existant after the first evening.Same problem every time we stay. Generally good service and room

« Perfect in every way. »

This was just excellent from arriving to departing. Even had a great pre arrival email and the requests I asked for when booking were met in full. Spotless room and wonderful staff throughout the whole Hotel. Also great service in bar and first class breakfast. We left late on Boxing day morning but still plenty hot water. (Some 5* hotels should take note!!) Finally the location is just perfect as Hotel is less than 5 mins from Junc 14 on M5. Will use again for sure when in the area.

    5
« Excellent stay and service »

Superb reception, excellent food, very clean and comfortable room, and very good value for money. Good location. Will certainly use this hotel again, and recommend to others. Everything was good about the Gables.

« Wonderful hotel, amazing price »

if anyone needs to stay locally to Tortworth/Almonsdbury or to stop over for a night on a long trip down to Devon & Cornwall, I can't recommend The Gables highly enough. The rooms are clean, the staff friendly, the price amazing. It's just so close to the M5 as well, that it would be madness not to stay here if you were looking for something in the local area.

    5
« Ideal for M5 and for a couple of nights »

Very convenient for the M5 motorway. Plenty of parking. Bar meals very good. Breakfast adequate with a reasonable buffet selection. Room was OK. Only poor point was the shower. Flow of water was a bit limited.

    « Business Visit »

Visited in December for a business meeting. The staff are very pleasant and helpful (hence the 3 stars) but the facilities were average at best - especially the IT facilities in the Meeting Room. There was only just enough coffee to go around and the lunch was spartan; there seemed to be some confusion about what we had ordered. A previous visit in October was much better on the organisation and catering front, although the IT facilities were still not up to scratch. We use this venue fairly frequently for the convenience of its location; we may look further afield next time.

    « The Gables »

OK hotel for a short stay but none of the rooms have facilities for people who cant get in a bath and no lifts to upstairs rooms. Food was good though even though it was busy in the bar and restaurant.

« Great Place for a Break of Journey »

We chose this hotel as the price was very good (Winter Special Offer) and it was a good stopover on our way to South Wales. We were impressed with the quality of the hotel and friendliness of staff. Our room was a good size and well equipped. We stayed in the newer wing of the hotel and there were no squeaky floorboards to traverse, which we've often experienced in other hotels! The only negative was the noise of the room doors banging but I guess this is just because they're good fire doors, so it's not a complaint. We were very impressed with the breakfast in comparison to other Best Western hotels we've stayed in.

    5

    « A little disppointed »

We looked forward to spending two nights in this externally attractive hotel but were a little disappointed with our room. It appeared quite tired and the bathroom was in need of updating. The shower over the bath was shielded by a plastic sheet not a modern screen. The room lighting was inadequate with a standard lamp in the corner and matching bedside lamps (all looked outdated rather than antique) and the low wattage bulbs meant trying to read in bed was an eye straining experience. Things did not improve once the lights were out and the traffic on the A38 adjoining the hotel reduced as we could hear a constant noise which was unpleasant. It sounded like air conditioning. The following day chatting to the bar manager I asked him about the noise. He immediately went to check and advised he had sorted it. Apparently it was coming from water in the radiator fast cycling due to an imbalance in the system in our and the adjoining rooms - I noted on our return to our room the heating was now on frost setting only but at least the noise had gone. The public rooms of the hotel are very pleasant and we enjoyed a good breakfast and also a snack in the bar area. The staff were very pleasant as well. Overall a nice hotel with rooms (or the one we occupied at least) in need up updating. I was lead to believe some had received improvement - clearly not No214

« training venue with lunch and refreshments »

Clean and tidy venue with attentive staff and very good lunch. the purpose of the stay was for the delivery of a two day training course. the room was spacious appropriately set up with equipment, a good experience for myself as the trainer and from feedback I received from the course delegates for them as well

    « A decent all round hotel. »

On arrival the receptionist was lovely, really polite and helpful and the reception area was neat and appealing. Everything seemed clean and welcoming. I was offered help with my suitcase too, I declined I'm only one floor up and the stairs and nice and wide with big landings. My room whilst not overly spacious was clean, tidy and had nice decor with lovely soft lighting. I like that kind of lighting but I think if you were trying to work it may have been a bit of a challenge. The one thing that was a bit annoying was I couldn't turn the lights of from my bed - I had to get up to turn them off then walk back to my bed without falling over anything - but this was a tiny tiny gripe, no biggie. The en suite was clean and well stocked. The TV worked, I was offered an alarm call and a newspaper. The wi-fi is far superior to many hotels I've stayed in and you got a feeling that people actually cared for you and the hotel. The bed was no hypnos but it was comfortable enough and the room was a nice temperature for me. No air con but windows open a reasonable distance and the radiator was quick to respond if it got a bit chilly. The clothes storage was good and plentiful. Could have done with a plug socket by the bed for my phone to charge overnight but it was no great hardship to get up when my alarm went off in the morning and walk to the phone - actually woke me up better! I had a meal in the Berkley brasserie on night one which was an excellent steak, cooked very well and great portion sizes, the following night I had another meal there which again was a good size - they forgot the chilli dip that was advertised so the meal was a little dry but it was well cooked and tasty. If you're after a michelin star this isn't your place but the hygiene and portion sizes are good and what you do get is well cooked. The cheesecake was lovely and well presented. The service was great, very polite waitress and the right level of attention. Breakfast was good, a lot of choice, I went for healthier options but it all looked nice and people were enjoying it. I would stay here again and I would recommend it. Car parking is plentiful and not far from the hotel.

« Pleasant hotel in good location »

We stayed at the Gables for a two nights break recently and couldn't really fault it. The room we had was large, well decorated and spotlessly clean, a contemporary bathroom with whirlpool bath, as well as shower. It had all you need including tea/coffee making facilities. We ate at their hotel both evenings as well as at breakfast. All our meals were hot, well cooked and tasted fine. Breakfast in particular was perfect for those with a big appetite. The bar was well stocked, comfortable and had 3 real ales. All the staff we met were really pleasant and helpful and happy to chat. It is located close to the M5 although we visited Bristol and the Cotswolds from there easily. We would happily stay there again and plan to do so when we visit Slimbridge.

    « Murder Mystery »

Visited as part of a group for the Murder Mystery night - because we'd not been to one before and with a subsidy provided by our club, extremely good value. The hotel is well placed for access to the M4/5 and appears pretty & well kept from the outside, good parking. Check in was efficent and the reception was clean. The room was ok - clean and everything worked. I did however feel that the furniture/decor was a little dated. The bathroom was clean and the shower was hot. The bar was well staffed and had 3 real ales on, at least one was local and all good. Our pre ordered 3 course meal was all well presented and hot - I didn't hear any complaints and the entertainment was quite well done, certainly made a change from the ordinary. I slept well, which may have been partly due to the beer but I did find the bed a little small (maybe I'm used to a double). Breakfast was good, the pork sausages are locally sourced and very tasty - no black pudding though!

    3
« Good location for motorway »

We stayed here one night which was enough. On arrival the receptionist was nice, we were allocated our room after we traveled down a few corridors that had very sqeaky floor boards we reached our room. The room was large enough but the decor was very dated and in dire need of a refurbishment. The pillows needed replaced as they stank. Breakfast was good but the staff could of been friendlier. I would be hard pushed to stay here again.

« Birthday trip with trip to zoo offer. groupon offer. »

We enjoyed our stay, the receptionists were lovely was so was everyone we dealt with. I note a lot of people were upgraded. I wish we had been, (just jealous!) but still our room was fine. I would stay here again.

« Tail of 2 halves lovely hotel room....worst food ever »

Came here on a groupon deal with bristol zoo tickets.at first the visit sermed amazing:room was better than expected flat screen TV 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath perfect.but as staying here on a Sunday we decided to eat in the restaurant as there is not many places to visit around here.bar looked good as did the menu so was feeling hopeful.problwm is had scallops to start but tasted just of burnt butter and needed more fresh lemon as the dressing was oily. The pulked pork hash was also dry. This could be forgiven until the mains arrived had roasted chicken breast with tarragon sauce the potatoes were gray (so old) and chicken bone dry. Also they served raw chicken to my partner. The food was appauling.....not looking forward to breakfast tomorrow morning. Slight saving grace the manager apologised. He was genuine and we appreciated it. we only paid for drinks so all food was removed from the bill. Such a shame and has left a bad taste in the mouth.worst food had in a hotel evet but nice room.so mixed reviews would stay here again.....but bring own food!

« Reasonable food, hopeless service »

There are certain basics you need to get right in this business. 29 minutes from arrival to glass of wine on table: hopeless. Opening the bottle of wine: nope, do it yourself. Asking how your meal is: wasn't even asked. Clearing plates: almost 20 minutes with dirty plates left on table. Fetching bill after saying you'd pay cash: 10 minutes. Could almost be forgiven if restaurant was busy but total headcount between 6 and 10 with 2 waiters "working". Staff need training, particularly in being attentive. Clearly they've taken no notice of other reviews criticising service. Most pub service and pub food better than this which is a shame as it's a nice location and could easily be much better by simply getting the basics right. Avoid

    « Brilliant hotel »

We arrived after a long drive up from Cornwall, we were greeted by a very pleasant helpful young lady. We were upgraded to a suite which was amazing. The bar/lounge area had just been refurbished and it was lovely the locks dinning area was in the process of refurbishment. The breakfasts were great and the evening dinner menu was good and the food was great. We will definitely be returning here

« First stay at a Best Western »

I visited this hotel while in the area for an event. I booked the hotel for the night before so I was well rested and that certainly was the case. I booked an executive double just for me, as I like to spoil myself on arriving at the hotel the receptionist was welcoming and very informative. My room was on the first floor, the corridor was very dimly lit so anyone with eyesight problems be warned. On entering my room I was really pleased to see that I had, had a room upgrade to a four poster bed room. All thanks to the Best Western membership card I applied for on booing my room. The room was amazing, it had a jacuzzi bath, Bluetooth docking station, freeview tv, bathrobe and slippers. The jacuzzi bath is lush I didn't want to get out, the hotel and the room is all well kept and clean. The bed was very comfortable, I had a very good nights sleep. The room has a radiator with a control to turn it up or down, just to make you aware it does warm up quick and the room holds the heat well. I ate in the Bar for dinner, the staff were friendly and attentive. The food is very reasonably priced for a hotel, I had a burger and chips with salad. The burger was a little tough which I passed onto the restaurant manager and he was happy to pass on my comments to the chef. On signing for the bill the gratuity is not automatically added in thankfully which is a lot nicer as it leaves you to give what you feel is adequate instead. I didn't have a pudding as this filled me nicely, on returning to my room I relaxed in bed and watched tv. The corridor was quite noisy thanks to inconsiderate guests but this is pot luck. In the morning I showered which was a little low powered but lovely and refreshing, a hair dryer is provided which I used and thankfully it's not one you have to keep your finger on. On entering the bar again downstairs for breakfast, I was shown to my table, the waitress brought me a pot of tea but the rest of the breakfast was self service, unless you wanted porridge. I stuck with a continental breakfast. On returning back to my room I gathered my items and checked out without an issue. The lovely receptionist even made sure I was ok with my bags even though I only had one overnight bag and a handbag. Lovely hotel, thoroughly enjoyed my one night stay and I would happily recommend the hotel to others. I wanted to stay two nights but on booking an executive double was only available for one night, never mind maybe next time I can indulge in the jacuzzi bath and comfortable bed a little longer!

    « Disappointing »

Disappointing room - bit of a mis-match with an 80s style pine 4-poster bedroom, but a super modern bathroom suite with whirlpool bath. Also, very, very cold. Had to ask for extra blankets twice! Very uncomfortable bed. Crippled by the morning! Awful food in restaurant, and poor service. Very slow and with argumentative staff. Took 50 minutes for meal to arrive, it was wrong, and raw in places, was charged for food I didn't have, then was told I did have it and had to pay! Took a little while and negotiating with three staff members to have it removed from the bill. Then it was back on the bill at check out! Room very close to the main road and not well insulated, so every single car, lorry, van that went past was very disturbing through the night. On the plus side, they let me check out a little later as I had a conference call. Poor value for money when compared to price / standards / service in many Premier Inns. Very disappointing.

    3
    « Disappointed »

The room was a bit tatty in places, especially the bathroom. The service in the restaurant for an evening meal was slow, a two course meal took two and a half hours. Food was not worth the money that was being charged. However, the choice at breakfast was good and the service better.

    4
    « A real surprise »

One night stay where the staff were very welcoming, polite and helpful. Food was good, room a little tired but clean and comfortable. Had dinner in the bar where once again staff were polite and helpful. Had a problem accessing internet but staff sorted the glitch very quickly, politely and helpfully. Would stay there again quite happily.

« Another very pleasant stay »

Our second time visiting the Gables for an overnight stay. As with the 1st time a nice room, excellent food and, with one minor exception, a very friendly team. Had a small issue with the service & attitude of a member of staff over dining, but this was dealt with by the management team to our satisfaction. If you are in the area and looking for a clean welcoming hotel with good food, then The Gables is worth adding to your list.

    5
    « Excellent as always »

I have stayed here a few times now and aways found the staff to be very polite and helpful. The food is excellent, however I am always torn between a great meal or reducing my waistline....meal always wins. Excellent location with easy access to Bristol. On this occansion I was here for pleasure not business after taking my daughter to Cardiff University and stopping off on the way back, not really the direct route but well worth the detour.

    5
    « a wonderful surprise »

a little unprepossessing from the outside, and right on the A38, the bedroom was a little tired but very clean and comfortable. We received a lovely warm and friendly welcome at reception, and had a splendid meal in the brasserie. The hotel offered exceptional value for money and was superior to many other hotels we have used in the Bristol area.

    « Excellent Overnight Location »

Stopped overnight following World Cup Rugby in Cardiff. The hotel is beautifully furnished and in excellent décor throughout. Arrived late and checked in. Bedrooms very comfortable and clean. Bathrooms well equipped; excellent décor and very clean. Beds very comfortable. Only negative was the lack of power from the shower. Breakfast good, although cooked supplies were running low - accept it was 09.30 but breakfast is served until 10am. Only other point, staff were slow at clearing dirty plates from the table. free Wi-Fi throughout and worked well. Check out was smooth and reception very pleasant. Located close to the M25, this is a very good hotel in close proximity to Bristol and will certainly be on our list for future leisure and business trips to Bristol and thee South West.

« Pleasant Hotel in a Great Location »

We stayed here on a Friday night on the way to a holiday in Cornwall. It broke up the long drive and I was congratulated on my choice of stopover hotel. The rooms are fine, a little small perhaps but hey, if you are only sleeping here its great. Everything in the room was comfortable and worked well. The staff are friendly and efficient and the restaurant is very nice. The breakfast in particular was exceptionally nice and the staff so friendly and helpful. Would I stay again? You bet your life I would.
