    « Midweek Break »

Two night midweek break in November. Hotel is excellent location just a 5 to 10 minute walk from everything Knaresborough has to offer - Wednesday is market day so does get busy. Hotel is very clean and well managed. Rooms are very good - we were upgraded to a bigger room with 6ft bed which was appreciated. Public areas of hotel (bar, lounge and dining areas) are well maintained, clean and tidy - bar has a log burner lit in the winter which is a plus point. All staff very friendly and professional and cannot do enough for you, especially Alison (does she ever stop talking ?). Food was excellent - menu for dinner and bar snacks. Good Yorkshire Breakfasts. Leisure facilities are managed by a separate company with their own staff. Facilities were OK - but nothing special when compared with other hotels. Some areas, such as around the pool and in the changing rooms could do with a bit of a refurb - signs of damp on walls and ceilings with paint peeling off is not very pleasing to the eye. Some of the tiled areas were also showing signs of wear and tear. They have a silly one towel only per person policy which they enforce strictly. OK for the men but some women do like two towels for drying hair etc. Also seemed to be a shortage of clean robes when the spa got busy. Having said all that, a very enjoyable two day break and we will probably return sometime early next year. Steve and Jo.

    « Great place for a break »

Me and my friend stayed here over night, staff were great and very helpful, we had a meal there too which was lovely, the bar area is relaxing. Our twin room was very clean and tidy. The area is good and the hotel is only a short walk to mother shibdens cave.

« First class service and food »

We (a large family gathering) stayed here recently and we were all so impressed we are seriously thinking about returning next year. for our annual get together. Upon our arrival we were not surprised to be informed our room wasn't ready. We were three hours early. No problem whatsoever. The lovely receptionist showed us where our luggage could be left securely and informed us of what the hotel had to offer and also where the best walks and shops were. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Our room was situated above the Spa, we had no complaints whatsoever. The evening dinner was first class as was the service, same again for the following morning's breakfast. Nothing could be faulted. Wish we had stayed an extra night and sampled the spa and other amenities.

« Excellent food and welcoming staff »

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and were very impressed with the food - especially the breakfasts. They were cooked to order even including the toast with the result that everything was fresh and hot. Staff were very welcoming and helpful - nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Out only small gripe was the water pressure on the shower and lack of any curtain/blind on the window. We weren't overlooked, but felt it would have afforded more privacy. Although traffic noise wasn't a problem, you could hear it early in the morning. This was probably because our room was on the front and didn't have any double glazing. Other rooms might be different. Overall though a very enjoyable stay.

    « One night getaway »

Booked in for one night midweek as a treat for the wifes birthday .The check in was quick and efficient,we was in room 25 upstairs just before you go through to the spa .The room was clean & tidy and a nice size .The breakfast was amazing ,we had the full english ,with as much tea & coffee you could drink .The staff on the reception and in the restaurant we really friendly and welcoming. The spa was also really good ,quite a small pool ,the jaccussi was brilliant as was the foot spa and the steam room & sauna ,all this is included in the price which makes it really good value .We will be going back at some point .Knaresborough is a lovely place also ,there was a market on the day we were there .plenty of shops to go at ,and then a nice walk round the castle ruins then down to the riverside for a lovely stroll ,would highly recomended .

    « Wow Amazing experience »

Where do we start! Greeted by the nicest hotel receptionist ever! Alison ?? very friendly, helpful, smiley and lovely. The effort she put in with our 5 year old daughter Maddie was outstanding from the minute we walked in to when we left, Maddie adored her! Kerry and Jonathon were superb hosts nothing was too much trouble the whole team are a credit to you both. Felt a little sad leaving but we will definitely be back. Fantastic.

    « Lovely stay »

The core of the hotel is the old manor house and this has been extended to accommodate newer rooms. Our room was in the old building and was lovely and had lots of character with low wooden beams and a creaky floor. The room was large with a large bathroom and all the usual amenities. The slight downside was the temperature of the room, even in October we needed a fan to sleep. Also the water pressure in the shower was poor but other than that we had a lovely stay. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, the best porridge I have ever tasted! There was a choice of continental buffet and then cooked breakfast to order. The hotel is about 3 minutes walk to Old Mother Shiptons cave (which is worth a look) and about 5-10 mins to the main town and restaurants. The restaurant in the hotel was very tasty but a little pricey. However I would highly recommend the afternoon tea, the scones were warm and delicious and there was plenty to eat! The Imagine spa was ok to spend a few hours in, however it was quite small and there was not that much to do, just a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and a swimming pool, there was only one foot spa working, however it is free to hotel guests so we cant complain!

    « Great for a relaxing break »

Hotel on main road but had no problems with traffic noise, plenty of parking at the hotel. Room large and clean. Food excellent, nice small bar and large lounge you can take your drinks into. Pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room area clean did say in hotel info should get gown and slipper all we got was a towel each but that's not a complaint just an observation. We had a massage in the spa which was excellent DONOT stay without using the spa facilities. The staff were brilliant efficient and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

« Excellent facilities. Food great. »

This hotel is in a handy location around 5-10 minutes walk of Knaresborough town centre and would be a great base if visiting either Harrogate or York, both of which are a short drive or rail trip away (I'd recommend the train to York to avoid the parking pains) The hotel is pet-friendly charging a nominal amount for your pooch to stay with you. There are also some great walks along the (very) nearby Nidd Gorge to exercise both dog and owner. We stayed in one of the ground floor annexe rooms adjacent to the hotel reception entrance. This was a bit smaller than I was expecting for a double in a hotel in this price bracket - I noticed this particularly when trying to find a flat surface to put the room service tray on! This room is also probably ready for a refresh (carpet marked, fittings a little old and tired). Nonetheless, it was otherwise clean and comfortable. As others have noted, the rooms here are warm (even with the heating off) which is great in October but might be an issue in warmer months. Dining and room service is available and both are of a very good quality. The full-English breakfast options will certainly set you up for the day. As far as I could tell, all the hot food is cooked to order, no dried out bacon or rock hard eggs in evidence. On-site bar with a reasonable selection of drinks. You are literally only a few minutes walk from the market place area of Knaresborough which has plenty more dining and refreshment options if you want an evening away from the hotel. Al the staff we encountered were most friendly and helpful, even the dog got a greeting. Overall. We'd certainly stay again for the excellent food and serivce.

    « Great Hotel »

Well it's a Best Western, so very clean, nice staff, food well just brilliant (breakfast & dinner). In a good location for local attractions and buses every 9 mins to Harrogate. Bedroom large and very comfortable but 10.5 tog duvet to hot so asked housekeeping for just a sheet, it was in the room before we got back from breakfast, ensuite nice and large, modern, plenty of hot water. Staff all very helpful (but then theres Alison (receptionist) Yorkshire lass blunt as they come BUT very funny with it, a great asset to the Hotel. We only stayed 3 nights (family reunion) but would happily use this Hotel to explore North Yorkshire. Regards Steve.

    « A good base for a golf party »

Stayed here in early Sept with 19 golfers, booked by White Rose Golf Breaks. The location is perfect for several golf courses in the area. Rooms were more than adequate and the pool and spa very welcome after a days golf. Breakfast was good. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it's location 5 mins from the town centre meant we were in easy reach of plenty of eating houses and pubs. Plenty of free parking too.

    « Enjoyable stay »

Didn't realise when I booked that I had access to the Spa. Great to have a sauna, a steam and a swim after breakfast. The breakfasts were really well done - made to order. Room was clean and tidy. Music played in the restaurant kept me awake in the early hours though.

    « Quirky »

We enjoyed our stay very much. It is a very old, interesting building. The room was comfortable and clean but very warm. The fan was on a 2 hour timer so my friend had to keep getting up in the night to switch it back on again. The grounds are lovely, the food was good and the staff were excellent. Pleasant, knowledgable and helpful. If you like clinical, modern, sleek and spacious, this is not the place for you. If you like cozy, friendly and different, this is the place. Very handy for the town shops, market, pubs and buses to Harrogate.

« Lovely hotel with easy access to town and ample parking »

I generally like Best Western hotels and this was no exception. Clean and comfortable, fantastic breakfast, swimming pool and a quiet relaxing lounge area. The free WiFi worked well and all the staff we met were most helpfull. This hotel is ideal for touring the area and it is only a five minute walk into the town centre.

    3
« Good location, reasonable accomodation »

This is a hotel well placed to explore the town. There is ample parking which is free so that is a good start. We had a standard room which was reasonable but maybe needed a little love and attention to justify the price. The bed was reasonably comfortable and we had a good nights sleep. The shower was ok and the room clean. The bar was expensive but there are plenty of good pubs within easy walking distance. Breakfast was good and good portions too. Maybe a 3.5 stay.

    « Spa & afternoon tea »

I enjoyed a spa and afternoon tea with a friend. I received an email for an offer and thought it was worth a go! One 30 minute treatment was included, there was a good choice of treatments available, my friend and I had a massage. We ended up in a double room, good job we didn't mind, but weren't asked if it was ok. We then had afternoon tea on the terrace, which was very peaceful and the weather was good. There were lots of cakes and a scone each, we could have done with a few more sandwiches and less cakes! I took the leftover cakes home for the kids!! Next, to the spa, the relaxation room was small, hot and the chairs were not the most comfortable. The pool was small but ok, the jacuzzi was lovely an warm, I didn't try the sauna or steam room. There were 3 chairs and 3 beds (very uncomfortable) by the pool. Overall it was ok, could do with more comfortable seating. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

« Beautiful hotel full of character »

Lovely hotel. We stayed in the old part in room 4. Room lovely and clean, gorgeous sash windows. Breakfast superb. Evening meal okay, was slightly disappointed to find a piece of bone in my chicken breast but the staff were very good and kindly gave us a round of drinks on the house. Friendly welcome on reception. Spa facilities lovely. Would definitely book again.

    5
    « Charge Battery Break »

Once again a super break. The food in the restaurant very good. Staff very attentive, reception from booking to departure very good. Our double room, was very comfortable. Cleanliness of room also good. Will have no hesitation on going back.

« Lovely hotel in beautiful location »

Very pleased with our well presented, clean and spacious room. Big comfortable bed, good shower. Quiet hotel - we enjoyed an undisturbed nights sleep. Great location and within walking distance of pretty park and boating river. Breakfast and dinner was good value and delicious, though the scrambled eggs were a little overdone for my liking. Staff were all attentive and efficient. Lovely welcome given to our dog.

    « Fantastic »

If I could give this hotel more than 5 I would. We had a over night stay spa break with a group of 10 friends for a friend birthday the hotel, food, spa and staff was all amazing they couldn't do enough for us the food was beautiful and the spa and room was lovely it was definitely worth the money we had are own private dinning room with hostess that could do enough for us nothing was too much trouble for them will certainly recommend and will definitely be returning In the future well done to all the staff for making it an enjoyable stay would definitely give more than 5* if I could

    « Great spa day ! »

Fantastic deal bought in group on and this did not disappoint. On arrival we found that there is lovely cafe and we were offered hot drinks on arrival . We spent a few hours in the gym - not massive but everything you need ! Changing rooms again not massive but fine for what you need . We had robes and towels provided along with slippers. The sauna and steam room is very hot !! Great jacuzzi !! And found the relaxation room a lovely pit stop before the treatment. Prior to the spa day we looked online to see what was on offer for lunch however we struggled to find the lunch menu online. The back massage was amazing as a treatment and staff all friendly. Very good day in all

    3
    « superb restaurant »

Good location, friendly helpful staff. excellent public rooms - bar, lounge, outside terrace/garden and superb restaurant "Storm". Plenty of parking, easy walk into town, beautiful riverside walks. Good rail/bus links to local towns (Leeds, Harrogete, York). Disappointing bedrooms in annex - small, dark & dated but clean.

    3
    « Spa visit »

The spa is average and the facilities look jaded. Staff are friendly. Basics are minimal eg only 1 towel per customer - to use for swimming and showering, items not replenished in changing rooms - bags for swimming clothes etc. The ' fire and ice' experience was disappointing as I thought it would be more than a sauna/ steam room and a bowl of ice! The swimming pool and jacuzzi are nice although limited seating around pool. The relaxation room is fine although cramped and cluttered.

    « Lovely stay »

Had a lovely stay at this hotel.Booking in was quick reception staff very friendly. Our room was great-very clean bathroom lovely and clean.Used the spa which I have to say is great. We go to a lot of spa hotels and sometimes the spa part of the experience isn't great but in this instance its a real treat-very clean and super relaxing.Had a great dinner food delicious and waitress was so friendly-same again for breakfast the next morning.I would happily book this hotel again and certainly as it is a short walk into the town it is in a great location.

    « Don't judge a book by it's cover »

Although charming from the outside, the interior leaves a bit to be desired. The public areas are not too bad but the rooms are old and in need of an upgrade. Some rooms had modernised bathroom facilities but not all. Cleanliness of the rooms left a lot to be desired. Upon our arrival we found biscuit crumbs on the floor and a used cotton wool bud. Not exactly how we expected to find it. The reception staff were awful and could do with taking a course in politeness, attentiveness and smiling at the customer. Unless you want to be in the heart of Knaresborough I would recommend finding a better quality hotel outside of town.

    « Beautiful, cosy hotel »

Originally having planned a trip to Harrogate, I'm so glad that we chose to stay in Knaresborough instead as it's a much more picturesque and old fashioned town than Harrogate. The hotel was beautifully decorated, facilities were fabulous, and staff were super friendly and relaxed. Particularly a lady on reception who told us she was previously known as "Jellybean". I expected the hotel to be miles out of town but it was 5-10 mins walk from the town/village centre which was really handy as it meant you can both have a drink rather than one person driving. The hotel had a lovely style of wooden beams, fire and armchairs mixed with modern touches. All staff were very friendly and eager to please. The bar was great and evening meal and breakfast was wonderful. I would say the breakfast was a little dear at £11 for continental (coffee, cereal and toast) but that's what you'd expect in an upmarket spa hotel. Wetherspoons is 5 mins away if you'd like something different. The spa had everything you'd expect, Jacuzzi, pool, foot spa, monsoon shower, sauna and steam room, however it would have been nicer if the spa area had a little decoration or perhaps some fairy lights as it seemed a little plain. Our hotel room was upstairs and right before the door to the spa and massage rooms. The room was very nice however I would have expected maybe a little fancier toiletries in the bathroom and the twin beds pushed together were really uncomfortable to sleep on with the line in the middle. I understand this is common practice in hotels but with £120 compared to the £40 per night I've paid for travel lodges which have a solid double bed, it would have been nicer. We also found it unbelievably hot both nights, even with the window down. We had put this down to it being a warm weekend (20C ish so not a heatwave) but after reading other reviews I wonder if it's this area of rooms near the spa which are rather hot.

    « Lovely stay. »

Lovely hotel, friendly staff......bit of an error with our booking as we had booked for myself, my husband and our 16 yr old son who is 6ft tall and on arrival we had been given a room with three beds normally this would be fine however the third bed was a fold up bed only suitable for a small child......we spoke to the receptionist who gave us a single room for him. The bar area was very welcoming with log burner. The restaurant also very nice, lovely breakfast and good choice on the menu for evening meals which we enjoyed on our first night. The pool area is only small but adequate with sauna, steam room and foot spa. The hotel is in a great location. We are going back in October.

« Not worth the money »

The staff at this hotel are very friendly and the food was really very good, however the hotel room massively let this place down. I had possibly the worst nights sleep I'd had all year, mainly down to the fact the room was like a sauna. Now I've slept in hot hotel rooms but never have I laid awake all night sweating more than I did in the spa's sauna. All windows were open and a fan was on full blast all night. The bathroom light initially wasn't working to which the hotel brought up 3 camping lights! They finally got he light working, however we later discovered you can't have the bathroom light on without the bedroom light on. Not ideal when you are sharing a room. We complained in the morning and weren't really taken that seriously. The receptionist said that they always get complaints about the room being too hot and they were well aware of the light issue. They knocked off a £22 bottle of wine from our bill, but on reflection it just doesn't seem enough. My friend and I paid £145 each for a one night spa break. The 30 minute treatment was lovely, and although the spa was small it was clean and nice. What should've been a nice relaxing night away turned into a missed nights sleep and feeling generally rough the next day.

    « Fine »

Lovely looking country house style hotel, generally friendly staff & enjoyable, well cooked breakfast. The negatives - a bit tired. Could do with generally refreshing, not great to find hairs in the bath on arrival, for the bathroom door handle to fall off & not be fixed or for spare copies every room key to be left out on a window sill in the corridor whilst cleaning takes place. The hotel does have a restaurant & is obviously popular for weddings. On the first night, there was the usual amount of noise but nothing too untoward - we heard people returning to their rooms a little noisly & slamming doors but that's about it. On the second night it was horrendous. The people next door had obviously had a falling out & various inebriated friends came hammering & hollering on their door & a couple of times on hours. It went on for a very long time. Whilst I realise the hotel can't control the behaviour of their guests, it should have been addressed and the people moved away from the corridors. To be frank it was intimidating, particularly with small children in the room - I'd have called down to reception but was worried about being overheard as they were aggressive at times. There's no way they can have been unaware & the next morning I was brought a complimentary newspaper to the room - family on the other side of the hotel were not so I strongly suspect they mush have been aware. Upon check out & departure it would have been polite to have been asked about my stay & I'd have addressed the above, but it was very perfunctory & no such enquiries were made. Disappointing.

    2
    « Not as expected »

The outside of the hotel is very beautiful and has a countryside feel as shown in pictures despite being very conveniently located in town and close to many local attractions. Upon arrival we had a lukewarm greeting at the reception desk (as well as a less-than-friendly departure) although check-in was very efficient. The rooms that I and my family stayed in we're not as expected, obviously some of the last rooms to be renovated in the hotel, and were very dated and not up to cleanliness standards. My mattress needed replacing as was very saggy. In another room we found a used cotton bud and biscuit crumbs on the side upon arrival. The gym and pool were of a good standard and are a great added bonus to the hotel experience. Breakfast was as expected and tasty and, although service could have been slightly more efficient, the restaurant staff were friendly. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Based on the room that I had, I feel that there is better out there but small improvements could make this hotel stand out.

« Super staff, shabby hotel »

My friends and I and came to the Dower House for a 2 day spa break. The staff gave us a warm welcome And were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were very hot and rather tired. Though they were very clean . Pre dinner drinks were very reasonable. Our evening meal was lovely with very good service. The portions were generous. Breakfast was lovely with a lot of variety. The service was very good We all enjoyed our treatments which were included in the deal.

« Knaresborough stay for Harrogate show »

Booked here as much cheaper than the Best Western in Harrogate. Didn't get to use the facilities as no time. Staff all very helpful and happy, breakfast was nice. Bit of noise first night from what sounded like somebody trying to park a helicopter but was so tired fell asleep anyway, shower control in room was very stiff so stiff in fact I didn't think it was working and had a bath the first morning!

    4
    « A lot of positives »

Knaresborough is a beautiful place and this hotel is within a reasonable walking distance of the station. The part I was in was an old fashioned building, but the room was large and well appointed. It was in the front and there is some noise from the A59, although I was not disturbed. The WiFi worked well which is not always the case in hotels. I had a mixed experience with dinner. The food was excellent: I had chicken liver parfait, sea bass and a particularly good Belgian chocolate truffle. However, the service was mixed, although the dishes did arrive promptly. I had booked before by e-mail, but when I arrived in the restaurant I was surprised to be shown to a table for four by the young waiter when there were tables for one. No menu arrived and it eventually transpired that they thought that others were joining me. Anyone can make a mistake, but the waitress was then quite cold to me while being friendly to the other tables. It wasn't my fault!

« Made to feel welcome »

Arrived in late afternoon and walked the dogs down by the river. Had a super meal in the Lounge which was a very high standard. Rooms very clean although noisy due to the proximity of the road. The staff were absolutely brilliant especially Becca and Jack who made our stay special. Would stay again.

« Regular Guest wouldnt stay anywhere else. »

I have visited the Dower regular for work at least one a month from 1 night to a week this last year, It dawned on me that I have never written a review on the hotel or staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble, because of the hours I work I tend to arrive back at the hotel after work go for a run or in the gym order my tea and they allow me to have it in my room. The rooms are lovely I tend to stay in room 7 unless 31 is free. There is everything I need for my stay, clean room, fresh bedding, comfortable beds, tea / coffee facilities walk in showers etc. The staff go the extra mile to ensure you have a fabulous stay and genuinely happy to ask how your day has gone... I have noticed all ages stay at the hotel which is nice to see. lovely to stay if you want to get away for the night and have a walk into Knaresborough / down the waterside or into Harrogate.

    4
    « Conveniently located »

The Dower House is just a five minute walk from the River Nidd, Mother Shipton's Cave and the railway station, with frequent trains to York and Harrogate. Our room was situated on the first floor at the rear of the hotel so was very quiet at night. It was clean and comfortable, with plenty of lights, but unfortunately they were of a very low wattage. This coupled with the fact that the bedside lamps were made of a dark material made reading impossible. The room had had a refreshment tray, and the hotel also offered a jug of fresh milk to accompany if requested. There is plenty of parking available at the hotel, and the town centre with its numerous shops and restaurants is just a few minutes walk away.

    4
« Nice, clean hotel with friendly staff »

What I expected from a hotel: clean room & bathroom. But what is standing out in this hotel is the friendliness of the staff! Especially the receptionist! I would definitely stay here again. Walking distance to the city center. A bonus is the restaurant, when late arrival and there is ample parking space. Very good hotel for business travellers and people on the move!

I was so pleased with everything about dowerhouse. From start to finish. Planning a preparation jonathan was fantastic. Tailored our wedding to everything we needed. Room dressed to look amazing. Fantastic outside space for drinks. Master of services was great. Everything ran smoothly. Everyone commented on how tastey the food was and how it was a perfect intimate wedding venue. Thanks to everyone at Dowerhouse. Would definitely recommend. Xx

    « Nice town! »

Great town, but hotel in need of some repairs. Ceiling needed water damage repair, window did not stay open on a hot day. No A/C. Carpet was in need of a good cleaning. Hotel night worth 65 GBP, but nothing more.

    « Extremely Enjoyable »

We had a really lovely visit to your spa. The staff were friendly and could not do enough for us making our visit very enjoyable. I had the lava stones massage which was amazing and then had gel nails which I was very happy with. The spa itself was very clean and the fire and ice experience was lovely. The lunch we had was also delicious. The hotel room was lovely and the bed was comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and happy to help. I couldn't recommend this place enough and we will definitely be back!

    « Excellent staff »

Just had a few days at this lovely hotel. Nothing was to much trouble for the staff I encountered there. The receptionist was very helpful with a few problems about my room and promptly arranged for the housekeeper to move my things to a new room. There was a wedding at the hotel my last night and even though there was quite lively music I was not disturbed in my room. Breakfast staff are very attentive with refills of coffee and tea and extra toast if you so wish. Special diets are well provided for. I would recommend and will return to the hotel.

« Stopover to see friends »

This is a comfortable hotel in the best sense of the word.It is in a lovely old building but with modern facilities. Staff very helpful and efficient. Nice garden in hot weather. It is out of the main town but only minutes walk to this lovely market town. It is our preferred stop on our visits north.

Good location of hotel, very helpful and friendly staff, good food and choice of wine, pleasant walks close by along the river and parkland, well situated for the dales, would certainly stay there in the future. Barbara & Tony Leicestershire.

« As far as I'm concerned nothing to dislike. »

I have been to this hotel several times. A few years ago it was okay however in the last couple of years it has become excellent. The food is great, I particularly like the breakfast which isn't a buffet. However you can literally order as much as you like and it is cooked fresh and presented beautifully . Monika is always a delight and greets you warmly in the morning. It also has an excellent gym , the wifi is good and the rooms are comfortable. What's not to like.

    « Problem Solved »

Having stayed here before I decided to stay again for a funeral in the area. On arrival I was greeted in a friendly manner and given the keys to my room. Unfortunately there was a couple of issues with the room unlike my previous visit which was enjoyable. I brought the issues to the attention to the receptionist and the manager who acted quickly to resolve the issues. Would I stay here again yes most definately for the convenience to everything that Knaresborough has to offer.

« Best place in town »

Visiting Yorkshire for a cycle weekend. Chose this hotel as can use Tesco vouchers. Walked around Knaresborough and had a couple of drinks but the town is a bit of a dump. So ended up drinking and eating in the hotel, good good food, attentive staff and nice ambiance. Rooms are good too, and they did us a special breakfast as we were leaving early. If staying here, stick with the hotel and don't bother with the town.

« Fantastic hotel and staff »

Me and my partner came here on the 29th and we saw the hotel only had 3 stars so we was abit worried but how wrong we was! The lady on the reception was lovely and very helpful. We had the 4 poster bed and it was gorgeous ( abit creaky ) but we didn't have anyone next door so it was fine. I would highly recommend this hotel! My partner went for a massage in the spa and really enjoyed it aswell! I proposed to my partner that night and she said yes so it was a fantastic weekend ????

« Great Shower, very comfortale bed and pleasant staff »

I checked into the Dower House Hotel and Spa, an overnight stay prior to a local conference. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I paid less than £50 for the night. Very clean hotel. The shower room was beautiful and had very powerful and invigorating hot shower. Ok, the water took a few seconds to warm up, so what it was well worth the wait! Also free Wi-Fi which worked faultlessly. Thank you Dower House, I will be back.

« Food ok, staff hit and miss »

The food was quite good and waiting staff friendly and accommodating. However the bar staff were incredibly rude, slow and unfriendly. Also, not once did I but the same drinks and them be the same price??? I was not the first to notice this-other friends who visited previous said the same thing. Needs looking into....

Nice comfortable hotel. Good hearty breakfast, lots of choice, I would rate 7/10. I had the Sunday roast would rate about 6/10. Could do with more vegetarian options. Our room was large & comfortable.

    « Good Location »

I had a comfortable room at the Dower House Hotel, but there are compromises with a converted country house- the window jammed and the hot water takes time to run. However if you can live with that the hotel is very nice indeed, with a functional (but not intimate) restaurant and a complete health spa and pool attached. Just two points:- 1) If you want to book spa treatment, forget it. Priority goes to locals (there is a membership scheme), and this hotel doesn't plan slots for guests. They told me - seeming annoyed at my question - that the next available spa treatment was next week - not much good for a one night guest. 2) Service is a bit snappy - the staff did try really hard to accommodate any special requests we had (I had elderly parents staying with me) so full marks, but a little more empathy and warmth would be nice. Overall, the Dower House is a good place to stay though, and it's convenient walking into the town of Knaresborough, which is picturesque and delightful.

    « A great location and a wonderful hotel »

The hotel is conveniently sited for the centre of Knaresborough. A spacious car park and a pleasant walk through gardens, over the railway lines and you are at the shops. The hotel is comfortable and relaxing. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is plenty of room to make yourself comfortable for a quiet drink or afternoon tea. Our room was quaint with beams and period furniture but with plenty of room, comfortable beds and a pleasant en suite . The dining room is impressive and looks over a serene garden. I enjoyed eating breakfast while watching a squirrel enjoying his. The spa is a tranquil haven with a good gym.

    « Very Nice Break »

Booked on the spare of the moment for a weekend break. Found everything to be pretty good. The room size was quite good and was clean. The bathroom was OK with a couple of little problems, which was not a deal breaker but could be a little frustrating. The shower seen door made a very loud screech as you pushed it back but the big problem is the wait for the hot water to come through, a good 3-5 mins, however when it did come through it was as expected very good. We stayed for 2 nights and booked dinner, bed & breakfast. The hot breakfast I have to say was excellent and with plenty of choice and reasonable quality along with cereals and fruit and juices again very good. The evening meals were again very good, the meal from the table d'hote were included in the dinner rate for the package, and the A La Carte menu you were given a £20.00 credit towards the cost. This may seem a little restrictive but a lot of places charge extra for steaks etc. and we both had steaks which were very good value for the extra money and well worth a try (excellent). Altogether it made for a lovely stay and would definitely stay again. A special thanks to Alison the receptionist who was most helpful.

We stayed to go to the Harrogate Flower show. Helpful and friendly staff at the hotel and the full breakfast was excellent. Our room and bathroom had a sloping floor and both needed a little updating.

    « Cardiac breakfast! »

I booked Dower House because of the spa and reasonable price on offer for B&B. All things considered I think this hotel is good value and the spa and gym facilities worth making use of. The swimming pool is an odd shape though and difficult to swim lengths if there are more than two people in at once. So try to anticipate when it will be quiet if you want to swim rather than just splash about. If you order the cooked breakfast exercise will be needed to burn up all the calories! Be warned, the food is very fried and for me heavy and greasy. My room here was in need of refurbishment and the bathroom suite dated from the 70s it seemed. Not too much of an issue for one night but I think I would be disappointed if I stayed longer.

« Nice staff and spa. Restuarant with a twist »

No hot water in rooms. Little sign says may take a couple of minutes to come through. I ran the tap for half an hour with only luke warm water. Offered 30% of a further visit, strange way of compensating. Spend more and be just as unhappy. Cannot reccomend.

« Wedding reception with overnight stay »

We stayed at this hotel when my niece married and had her reception here. When we booked we requested, if possible, early access to our room as we need to freshen up and change after a long drive. We arrived earlier than expected and it was great to hear our room was ready. The receptionist when I asked her, advised us of the easiest way to get to the church. The hotel was warm and it was nice that the heating was still on in the early hours when it was cold. First hotel I have been to, to keep its heating on. Much appreciated. The reception meal was excellent. The beef perfectly cooked and good yorkshire pudding. Can't fault it. Breakfast offered an amazing choice. Didn't use the spa facilities. Free wifi, didn't even have to ask for the password as it was given at checkin. Hotel well situated for the town centre. Plenty of parking spaces. Pleasant gardens with plenty of garden furniture which in the summer would be lovely to enjoy on a pleasant summers evening. Enjoyed my stay and would certainly use again.

    « 1 night stop over »

On arrival received great room rate from manager - however on specifically asking for a quiet room on 3 occasions during our discussions - we found ourselves in a very attractive room (nos 3), but directly facing onto busy and noisy main road - which was not helped by the fact that non of the windows had either double or secondary glazing. This lead to a very disturbed nights sleep. Both evening meal and breakfast selections we had were good so some comfort there.

« Excellent hotel in a lovely place. »

I stayed here for work, 1 night and we held our meeting in the hotel the following day. The Staff are really helpful and checking in/out was very swift. The room was nice, small but nice and the hotel facilities are excellent. We ate out, but breakfast and lunch were perfect. Well situated in a beautiful town, am planning to take my Wife back for a weekend away so one of those rare occasions where the hotel is excellent for work and pleasure.

« Great Place to Stop »

I have used this hotel now on a number of occasions whilst driving from Scotland to home (for me it is about half way). The staff are excellent, with well appointed rooms and excellent bathrooms. The Spa looks excellent, although I have not yet had the chance to use it. The restaurant is good, with fresh, locally sourced food, well presented. The staff are friendly and professional. I will be returning again, this time hopefully to stay for a bit longer.

    « Excellent stay »

Bar, lounge and restaurant areas really nice. Staff really friendly and helpful, Large, clean room with four poster bed and sofa. Only complaint was that it could do with a bit of decorating in places. Very comfortable bed and very quiet at night. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. Didn't use the restaurant at night as already had plans but would have done if not. Didn't use the spa but my partner was very impressed with the gym. Would stay again if in Knaresborough.

    « Chilling out day »

Visited the spa with a friend for a catch up and chill out. The spa staff were very pleasant and helpful. The reception area was very nice and we were greeted with a cup of tea while we filled our forms in. The swimming pool was a good size and there was a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, foot spas and ice. A chilling out room with drinks was for relaxing and lunch was included which was sandwiches and cakes. All very enjoyable. We looked around the hotel to book a nights stay and we will definitely do that. All very nice.

Pool spa etc clean and nice temperature. We will definetly be back. Carole and Keith

    « Excellent Spa Day! »

My friends a I regularly treat ourselves to Spa Days all over Yorkshire. This has to rate amongs the best! The staff are so friendly and welcoming, they seem genuinely interested in making sure everything is good about your visit. We were given tea and coffee on arrival, this was a nice surprise. We were shown the facilities and everything was clearly and quickly explained to us. We were given lovely robes, towels and slippers and after using the pool, sauna, steamroom and footbaths we waited in the nice little relaxation room (lots of current issue glossy mags) until our afternoon tea arrived. Again the service was so friendly, and our afternoon tea satisfying, delicious scones! Our treatments we all scored top marks, good therapists, lovely bubbly Chelsea made us feel 10 years younger! Reviews should be on your overall experience, not making a mountain out of a little niggle, we had a wonderful day, we consider ourselves a critical bunch and visit spas all the time, give this one a go, you won't be disappointed! We'll be back, thank you to the staff at Imagine Spa!

    « Short spa stay »

Apart from a lumpy bed we had a fab stay at this hotel. All the staff we encountered were really friendly. The spa is small but has everything you need, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and it was delicious (if on the small side). Breakfast was red hot and definitely one of the best we've ever eaten. The lumpy bed & pillows let the hotel down as the room was spacious and well decorated. We'd still go back but make sure we test the bed before bedtime!

« Below average with very disappointing breakfast »

Goo location for exploring the surrounding area. Check in was brief but we had to go back to learn about too many things (many of which we were given but not told so). Room was over the kitchens so we could hear the exhaust fans running all the time. The room was very poorly lit (one light did not work) and needed updating. The beds were hardish which we like but the pillows might as well have been filled with bricks for all the comfort they provided. were Breakfast was well presented but the poached eggs were uncooked on two days. Once is forgivable but having returned them on the first day, we gave up on the second.

    « 'Cosy' »

My husband decided to book this hotel for my birthday as part of the hotel & spa package which was great value for money ! The hotel itself is tidy & very cosy with the lovely log burning fire around the bar area along with the great decor! However we felt the rooms needed some attention , there was no iron or ironing board which is a general let down & we had to ask for our 'free welcome drink' which we found was wrong but generally the food was gorgeous & the staff were friendly ! Would recommend!

    « Weekend break »

Excellent location for the town and river. Nice welcoming staff and lovely cosy decor to bar area. Our room was nice with beams and a lovely sleigh bed. The restaurant was set out beautifully but the evening meal was a bit disappointing. Breakfast though was excellent. All the staff were very attentive and couldn't do enough for you, house keeping went that extra mile by changing our quilt because it was a bit cold in the room. Would recommend this hotel good value for money.

« perfect break in perfect surroundings »

Booked as a short break, could not have been better, fantastic friendly hotel, full of old charm, immaculately clean and up to date room and on suite, we made great use of the pool and spa facilities during our stay which were all included in the price and the majority of the time it was like having a personal pool to yourself. Breakfast was excellent quality and locally sourced filled you for the day, Ideally situated to take a short stroll into Knaresborough market place and castle for exploring will definitely return Nothing was too much trouble for Becca on reception she made you feel instantly at home and if i were to travel alone i would not hesitate to go here.

« A cut above without breaking the bank »

Good location, good parking, rooms offer what you need without going overboard on style. Gym and pool good too, also Wifi. Not so keen on the food - cook needs to understand how to chose quality ingredients, enhance them judicious seasonings, and not ruin them in the cooking process. But there are excellent eateries nearby - 'Carriages' 2 minutes walk away in Knaresborough, and all sorts in Harrogate 5 minutes away.

    « Small and cosy »

Stayed for two nights with family. Room Spacious and well situated near rear of hotel. Quiet and warm. Towels changed daily. Very large and comfortable bed. Meals Breakfast was cooked to order and local ingredients were delicious. Good range of choice. Coffee was excellent. Ate in the hotel first evening we arrived. Good selection and well cooked. Reasonably priced too. Spa Use was included in the price. Small pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Plentiful supply of towels, robes and slippers. Staff Were unobtrusive and very helpful. This is a small hotel within walking distance of the town. All areas were clean and tidy with lovely log fires in the lounge and bar. We decided we had found a gem and will return. Thank you Dower House.

    « Christmas Dinner 2015 - what a disappointment ! »

Booking was for 12pm - seated at 12.25pm. Table: Nicely laid out, including crackers and complimentary glasses of some fizzy alcoholic yellow liquid. Starters: Salmon Roulade: Tasted fine, presentation poor - had the appearance of ?chopped-off fingers'. Goats cheese and beetroot tart: Luke warm (was it meant to be served hot or cold - no one could tell), way too ?goaty', accompanying mini-waldorf salad was pathetic. Soup: Nice and tasty - not sure how that happened in relation to the rest of the meal. Main course: Turkey: Vegetables were a disaster - apart from the cauliflower, all (parsnips, carrots and brussel sprouts) were overcooked. Roast potatoes greasy. Pigs in blankets - poor quality sausage, lots of ?filler'. Turkey - ok. Plate swamped with gravy (why not serve it separately ?) Stuffing balls were just solid lumps. Mediterranean vegetable crown: Basically a puff-pastry ?pizza pocket' - tasted ok, but would prefer something more seasonal than ?mediterranean vegetables'. Asparagus too hard, roast potatoes greasy, not at all fluffy. For this amount of money there should be more than one vegetarian dish available. One dish is not an option - unless the option is ?take it or leave it'. Dessert: Xmas pud: Woe is me - what a disaster - stodgy and tasteless. Brandy sauce should have been called ?Blandly sauce' - no hint of flavour at all. Creme brûlée: Another unmitigated disaster - some frothy, thin, yellow tasteless foam with a sugar crust. Utterly bland with no hint of the promised orange and cinnamon. Whoever made this clearly had never seen a creme brûlée in their life. Cheese board: Cheeses varied in quality - cheddar was below average - quite rubbery, the blue stilton was nice. Selection of crackers was dire: water biscuits or cream crackers - take your pick - doh! Coffee: Some brown tasteless liquid. Mince pies: Small and overly sweet. Overall: Presentation was fine. Service was passable, but not once were we asked if everything was ok and there was a loooooooong wait for the cheeseboard to be removed. This would all fade into obscurity if the food had been up to snuff. Unfortunately it wasn't even close - generally poor quality and obviously bought-in/reheated. Overall: Bah, humbug !

« Lovely time but disappointing »

We stayed here end of January for my partners birthday, we booked a large double room which was fantastic and as stated LARGE very pleased this soon change when we realised the bed was two singles pushed together so as you can imagine there was a gap in the middle of the bed. did not expect to pay for a double only to get 2 singles pushed together this really should be stated before you book if this was the case we would of booked somewhere else. We were offered another room with a double bed but this was a stranded room and very small. Breakfast was lovely and lots of choice. Don't think we will go back only because we felt a bit deceived with the bed situation and this spoilt our stay.

    « Fantastic »

I was recommended to this hotel, really glad of the referral. Arrived to a friendly welcome, in a warm and hospital environment. Room was spacious, clean and well appointed. The bar, lounge and restaurant have beautiful log burners churning out heat and a delightful country feel. Hotels in this part of the world are notoriously expensive and often without parking. This hotel is fairly priced, free and plentiful parking; just perfect for my needs. I have added it to my collection of must use hotels when trawling the UK. My only worry is, it gets well known and the prices rise; make the most whilst it remains such a good deal. Fully recommended

    3
    « En-route convenience »

The approach and building are impressive. I stayed in a single room which perhaps did not have the attention to detail of double rooms. The shower in my en-suite did not work and I had to have a bath which was rather inconvenient. It was too late to ask for repair. The room was comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. I ate in the bar which was very acceptable.

« Good hotel, brilliant deal but.... »

We got this deal through booking.com and paid £54 for one nights bed and breakfast. For that price the hotel was superb however I'm not sure we would have been as pleased had we paid the full price. The room was a decent size as was the bathroom. The bathroom was slightly dated and the pressure of the water was poor but for one night it was bearable. The breakfast was superb, freshly cooked to order and quickly served. When we checked out we still had use of the spa for the day which was brilliant. The staff in both the hotel and the spa were superb. They couldn't do enough for you. Would we stay again? Yes however only with a good discount.

« Very pleasant stay with nice a spa »

I stay away a lot so it was a pleasure to find this hotel. Was very looked after and staff all very friendly and helpful. Perhaps my room wasnt the most up to date in decor and lay out the best was very comfortable and I had a good night sleep. The spa/gym facilities where all included with the hotel stay.

« Excellent service and location »

Booked this hotel for a weekend break for my birthday in January. There was a good deal on this particular weekend so decided to give it a try. So glad we did! Room was big, clean and comfy. I often have difficulty sleeping at home but had two very good nights sleep in the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They only had portions of full fat milk on the drinks tray but we were offered a carton of semi skimmed milk instead when we asked to change the milk. The staff got to know our faces and room number very quickly and frequently enquired how we were doing. The breakfast was excellent with a full range of continental and full English choices. Would definitely stay again and definitely recommend this hotel. Can't comment on gym and Spa as we didn't use them.

The Dower House provided everything for us and more. We were given a very warm welcome and a member of best Western had done us a 3 day deal . Our visit was a special one and we received a tray of handmade chocolates a lovely touch much appreciated thank you .We had a large refurbished room at the back which was very quiet . The restaurant food was excellent as was the service they went that xtra mile !! We also liked the fact that you can walk easily into town and did that one night . Parking on site was good which was important to us . The pool was ok only went once . We liked all the decor downstairs near the bar with all the great photographs of the Tour de France and did sit by the wood burner a nice cosy touch.

    « Perfect Christmas break »

We stayed for 4 nights over Christmas on a package that included breakfasts and evening meals as well as two afternoon teas. We had a lovely, refurbished room with plenty of space and in a very quiet end of the hotel next to the spa. The service was fantastic and the meals were great with plenty of choice on the menu. The Christmas package was fun and festive with carol singers, mince pies, midnight mass at the local church and plenty of sitting by the fire with games and mince pies. We were given a tour of the pool, gym and spa which looked very nice although we didn't have time to use the facilities because we wanted to get outside to enjoy plenty of walking. The only down side, if any, was that it's dog friendly so we often walked into the lounge to see dogs on sofas which isn't quite to our personal taste in a hotel. We had a great stay and really got to know the friendly staff while we were there. Definitely a place we'd consider again if we plan another Christmas escape.

    « New Year Package »

Once again, with a group of friends, I stayed at the Dower House for their 3 night new year package which includes the New Year's Eve dinner dance. Once again a fabulous experience - friendly and helpful staff, fine attention to detail, great food. It's almost like a private house party atmosphere. Highly recommended.

    3
« Disappointing New Year Break »

We had been to this hotel on 3 or 4 occasions, twice on a New Year package, and had been satisfied. This time, however, the bedroom was pokey with very little drawer space and only one chair. The lighting was so abysmal, it was difficult to read. On the positive side, staff were unfailingly pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was superb. However, on the first evening, there was very little choice on the dinner menu, and they had run out of one choice of main course and one pudding choice. When ordering wine, we were asked to buy a bottle from the bar, and one of the choices was not chilled, so we had to choose an alternative. The second night was not much better, again a very limited menu to choose from. Vegetables seemed to be limited to roast parsnips and carrots each night. For the gala dinner on New Year's Eve, there was absolutely no choice whatever. The celebratory disco was not just loud, but painfully so, despite our move from the main room to the bar area. There was a queue of other guests waiting to complain when I approached the manager, who agreed to ask the DJ to turn the volume down. There seemed no perceptible difference in the volume, and the unbearable level of noise, which made us very uncomfortable, continued unabated until 1.15 a.m.

« Overnight stay and family party »

Visited early Dec for a family party (53) most of whom were staying overnight. Helpful reception staff and OK room - heating not working but electric heater fixed by maintenance. Overall the room was a bit sad looking - needed some TLC to bring it up to a good standard - that said the bar and restaurant service was excellent and the breakfast was fantastic - a mixed bag but I echo the theme of many others in that it needs the rooms brought up to date - if not I worry it will go downhill slowly.

« Another lovely visit to the hotel and spa »

Me and my boyfriend stayed for only one night at the weekend, although there was a slight mix up with our reservation, it was quickly sorted and upgraded. The spa facilities was great as per usual. The room was spacious, with a king size bed and a hot shower. The room was however boiling. Even after turning off all radiators and opening the window fully all night, the heat was overbearing while trying to sleep. The breakfast was fantastic, lovely service and tasty food. We asked for a later checkout and it was granted. Again, another lovely stay here, and will definitely will return.

    « Sad really »

Simply put this hotel needs some investment to bring up to some modern standard. Disappointing as the grounds and area are stunning. Hotel has poor parking. The bar is small, and the rooms are out of date. There seemed to be staffing issues when we arrived as it was difficult to get served in the bar. The staff however were all lovely. Just needs investment!!

    « Relaxed night away. »

We pre-booked afternoon tea but due to bad weather we arrived late. This didn't faze the staff even though they were dealing with a large Christmas lunch party. We made use of the free spa facilities before getting ready for Dinner. Due to a Christmas party the restaurant had been relocated to side room which was more than adequate. The food was lovely and we would highly recommend the restaurant. The hotel staff were warm and welcoming and we will definitely go again.

    « Don't judge a book..... »

After hearing so many good things about the Dower House we were looking forward to attending an event here and staying over. However, as the title says; you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Me and my partner were thoroughly disappointed. We arrived and check in was great. Friendly and efficeint. Perfect start to what should have been a perfect night. Upon first impression of the room everything looked great. We seemed to have everything we needed. Even a kettle, perfect after being stuck in traffic! We didn't realise we had to crouch onto the floor to make it. The plug downstairs would have been closer than the dressing table. We then got ready for the evening. After being stuck in traffic, a refreshing shower was what we needed! We just didn't realise that it would be a cold one. Zero hot water. We spoke to reception and they assured us the manager would look into it but this never happened.. We came down to meet friends in the bar but unfortunately had to wait 20 minutes for a drink, despite staff walking past. The food was average, however, like the shower.... Maybe this is because half of our table were almost halfway their meal before we received ours. After the food, the rest of the evening went well but heard from a few other people of similar issues with their rooms. Following what ended up to be a great night (thank you Marious, you were amazing) we were woken up a few times by an unknown noise, we eventually made it through the night and when waking up VERY tired the next morning we went down to breakfast. We had made the decision to ask to speak the manager after we had eaten. We asked for coffee numerous times and to be honest I'm still waiting.... We went to reception and they asked us to take a seat. We took a seat around the corner. After a 10 minute wait, we overheard what appeared to be the manager telling the receptionist 'to knock some money off the bill' and that he was 'too busy to speak to us'. I really felt for the receptionist. What an awkward position to be in! She came around the corner and told us about our discount and explained the manger was unavailable. We didn't have the heart to tell her that we had overheard what the manager had said. We accepted the discount but it was not what we wanted. What we wanted was to discuss the issues with manager, give him constructive criticism so he has the opportunity to rectify the errors before the next guest comes in. It's a shame he didn't give us the chance to tell him that.

« Birthday Spa Day was a perfect day! »

We visited the Imagine Spa at Dower House yesterday, I had booked for myself and two friends as a surprise for my friends birthday, initally was going to book with lastminute.com but I emailed the hotel and booked direct. The package was for an afternoon spa 2pm-6pm with afternoon tea and a 30 minute treatment each £45pp, I also opted to add a bottle of Champagne which was great. The facilities are very good, the relaxation room is lovely, we all had our massages with Becci and they were brilliant. The afternoon tea was brilliant, one of the best I have had. We will be back!

« Very enjoyable stay at the dower house hotel »

Booked to stay here with 5 others girls for a birthday celebration. We arranged for bed breakfast and evening meal together with an afternoon in the Spa with treatments and an afternoon tea. Firstly, I have to say that all the staff at both the hotel and spa were professional, friendly and very helpful throughout our stay. Our rooms were very spacious, clean, modern and had all the facilities that we needed. The lounge area was very welcoming and relaxing and there was a lovely bar area. The food in the restaurant was very good and there was a lot of choice at breakfast. It was delicious. Overall we all had a fantastic stay and a big thank you to all the staff for making it extra special for is all.

Great hotel, excellent staff, good food and comfy rooms. Special mention to the staff that work there. Very friendly always with a smile. I recommend this place. Good facilities like the gym, bar and tv/lounge area. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. Really enjoyed my time while been on training from work.

« Nice Hotel and Staff »

Stayed for just one night and arrived late so didn't eat dinner in the restaurant but breakfast was very good and freshly cooked. Room wasn't palatial but very clean and with an excellent shower. Staff all very friendly and helpful and I would happily stay here again.

« Putting the record straight »

We were booked into this hotel for a family party and on checking the directions noticed that there were some terrible reviews. I was really worried about what we would find and even asked for a different room on arrival because it was one of those mentioned but need not have worried. Our room number 9 was very comfortable and clean and on checking with those staying in 11 and 12 they said everything was fine. The meal in the evening and the breakfast were both excellent and the staff really good and still patient and pleasant even as the Customers had a few drinks.

    « Shiverig in Knaresborough »

Went to Knaresborough for two nights for a wedding locally. Spa lovely, breakfast excellent, rooms small, tired with a trickling cold shower and cold radiators as the heating had broken down. Unable to solve the problems whilst we were there which somewhat spoilt the occasion.

    « Good Hotel - Nice Staff »

I arrived on a late Sunday afternoon (travelling for work). I had eaten a meal at home so just wanted a little afternoon tea. In no time a fire was lit for me in the lounge and a lovely tea was laid out. I can't tell you how welcome that was and it meant a lot to me that they did that just for me! Staff were very nice, room was good, breakfast was delicious - all round good experience. Didn't have time to take advantage of the Imagine Spa so might have to come back!

    « Poor experience »

Really disappointed with this hotel, in comparison to what it used to be some years ago. Room was not heated (radiators not working), shower not working and food in the restaurant was cold. The room was also tired and in need of decoration - not what you expect for £124 per night. The positive side was that the staff group were very good and tried to make amends by providing a heater and to change the food. We won't be returning

« Room 11 and the Stench of Doom. »

Travelled to knaresborough to attend a close friend's wedding. Quickly shown to room 11, best described as a tiny, poky, under heated broom closet with cheesy decor fit to make your eyes bleed. And the smell, oh the smell! Close your eyes for a moment and think of the cheapest, vilest taxi cab air freshener and then underlay with a thousand stale cigarettes. One of the first things we did on arriving home was wash everything we wore as it was totally impregnated with this appaling, noxious miasma, including my wife's expensive wedding outfit. And now to the bathroom. I genuinely had to check whether, upon entering the bathroom I had stepped through a rip in the space-time continuum which transported me instantly from the main room's 1985 to the bathroom's dowdy 1970. Stained floor tiles, appaling sink, hot water which took 2 or three minutes to anaemically filter through to a shower head which had, frankly, given up the will to live and exhibited all the power of a chronic asthmatic blowing through a straw. The walls are clearly constructed of cardboard or tissue paper and every noise from the surrounding rooms and corridors, not to mention the bar and restaurant underneath is transmitted in delicious Dolby stereophonic sound right to your room. And the final insult, the bride and groom had left a little gift bag at reception to be placed in our room, which the staff couldn't be bothered to do. We had to ask for it at checkout, and were greeted with an unapologetic shrug of the shoulders when we asked why we hadn't received it. No, sorry, that wasn't the final insult. The final insult is the utterly outrageous price one is asked to pay for the dubious pleasures described above. £114!!! I've stayed in hotels for half the price, which were twice as good. You have been warned.

« Therapist Kerry excellent. Best facial ever »

Wonderful. Reasonable, good value lunch, professional staff, clean. Only comments I'd make is to provide a dry robe for after the treatment, and fix changing room lol door. Will certainly return. The lunch I'd recommend is salmon salad or Caesar salad. Didn't get the promised included hot chocolate but hey ho. A great little spot, if I lived closer I'd become a member.

« Great experience at the Dower House hotel »

We booked in for one night, after reading some negative reviews we were a bit worried but were very pleasantly suprised by the quality and service at the hotel. Our room, (21) had a king size bed, was bright and comfortable with modern fittings and quiet so we got a good nights sleep. The bar area and diningroom were attractive and well cared for, the staff were friendly and very helpful. We had our evening meal in the reastraunt, the food was delicious and very well presented, it was quality. The breakfast did not disappoint either with lots of choice of good quality food. The price of the room also included use of the swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna which were all very clean and well presented. Overall a great stay in which we cannot find fault.

    « Never again, »

Arrived on Friday afternoon for two nights. Given key to room 14. Tiny double room, dark, dingy and very dated. Worst/poorest hotel room I've ever seen and at £124 per night too!! Asked if any other room available and was told no so began looking at Internet for an alternative hotel. Shortly after receptionist offered us another room which was fine. Checked out spa to book treatments to cheer us up after bad start to stay and was told no treatments available until Monday! Advice - book in advance. Restaurant service very slow even though very few guests eating there and some things on limited menu not available. Next morning told we would have to move to another room as needed our larger room for guests needing a child's bed put in. Offered another REALLY poor and tired room. Dirty carpets, bathroom fittings hanging off wall, chipped and wonky furniture, broken tiles etc. We had no choice but to accept this room as busy day planned and therefore no time to seek out alternative. We cannot understand how any hotel has such a sub-standard room! It really was awful. Offered a discount off our bill but not enough to make up for such a disappointing/upsetting stay. Don't stay here unless you get one of the large double, modern rooms. Breakfast was ok though.

« Like Home - only cleaner, friendlier & with fantastic breakfasts! »

I stayed at the Dower House for a week in October. The room was great with an excellent ensuite shower (although the tiled floor was spongy & slippy when wet). The tv had a decent choice of channels, a fantastic bracket which made watching it from the bed effortless but with England playing Pakistan in Dubai most of my morning "tv time" was spent listening to Aggers and Geoffrey on the radio anyway. Fantastic breakfasts of impressive variety every morning in the very pleasant restaurant, with an excellent selection of daily papers. What a treat! Sadly I couldn''t spend more time in the excellent bar and sitting rooms or (what a bonus!) the excellent spa with pool, hot-tub, steam and sauna. Despite the great facilities however it was the incredible warmth of the staff who genuinely care about their guests that made my stay unforgettable, from recommending breakfast Blueberry muffins to a local butcher for great pork pies. Just as "You can't beat Elite meat!", you find better staff than the staff at the Dower! Thanks to one and all and I hope to see you again soon - if not at the Dower, at the Crown, the Hart or even the Beagle ;-) !! (ps Secure internet would be nice as I hate checking email over an insecure connection. pps Check out the very funny, very loud Canadian, Simon King at the Frazer Theatre on November 6th!) Thanks again for everything. Paul

Can't fault this little gem of a hotel only complaint was my tiny tired room on arrival however after I spoke to the very friendly receptionist I was promptly moved to a delightful room. Spa is amazing & the cosy lounge is so warm & inviting with its roaring fire staff are so kind & polite going back again!

« A Pleasant Hotel With Lovely Staff »

We spent a long weekend here with a group of friends. It's a charming hotel set in an attractive little town and very close to Harrogate. Not everything was perfect but there was nothing serious wrong here - just a few little niggles (like no shaver socket in the bathroom - but when I told reception they supplied an adapter - problem over!). Our room was clean, spacious and well furnished. The breakfasts were excellent and the dinners were very good. The level of service that we received from the staff was excellent.

« STAFF MAKE THIS HOTEL SO GOOD »

Even though there were quite a few negatives staying at the Dower we still really enjoyed it. :Location is good, 5 minutes walk to the waterside and Mother Shipton's Cave. Negatives were uncomfortable beds, room too hot (even with heating switched off) and with the windows open found it very noisy from the passing traffic. There was only one decent plug socket into which the TV was plugged. There were two more sockets on another wall so we ended up with the kettle on the floor and the hairdryer lead would not reach the mirror! Breakfast was superb, good variety, freshly cooked every morning. The evening meal was well cooked and presented, the only criticism was we had the same menu each night and some of the portions were on the small side. We had a swim and jacuzzi each morning before breakfast and loved it. The main factor that made our weekend at the Dower special were the superb staff. They were all wonderful, friendly and helpful - could not fault them!

« Great Food and Staff BUT................ »

This is a nice oldy worldy hotel with lovely staff and very good food. I was in room 1 the bathroom was really dingy, almost dark, the bed was hard and wifi had barely a signal. Needs a bit of investment in updating but the staff and food are exemplary. Manage, ment, back up your staff and sort out the niggles!!

Just like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at the Dower House who worked Saturday 3rd october. We had a tremendous night. The food was really good and for those of us that stayed over the rooms were lovely. Bar staff were excellent. Looking forward to next years!!!

    « Faultless! »

Stayed here on Saturday for one night but checked in early and had lunch too. I really couldn't find fault. The whole experience from check in to check out was perfect. Fabulous, hard working and very attentive staff led by Jonathan, the hotel manager. Beautiful four poster room that was comfortable, clean and spacious. Lunch, evening meal and breakfast were all exceptional. Ideally situated for a lovely stroll along the river and into town too.

« Standing up for what is good »

I arrived here this afternoon an hour before the due time for my room to be available. However I was told it was ready and I was welcome to check in. This was a great help as I'd had a long journey and a long day already. I was also offered breakfast at a reduced price and also a discount for spa treatments. I decided to book a couple during my stay. I was offered help with my luggage which I declined. However being offered was a pleasant surprise. My room is fabulous, Large spacious, soothing, relaxing colours and double shower. A friend arrived to meet for a cuppa and she was shown a lovely spot and the was brought with homemade shortbread. Alison was exceptionally helpful. I felt dismayed at some of the negative reviews of the dower house so although I have another couple of days here I felt it was important to write a solid, honest appropriate review. I feel truly blessed to be here in these relaxing surrounding with the gym and spa area to chill in as well. I think this hotel so far offers, a good value for money, very pleasant town hotel, with good facilities and added extras, helpful and welcoming staff. Still not the most state of the art, nor traditional. It somewhere in between and does what it says it will do and a bit more. That is very good by my realistic perspective. I would love to try dinner in the dining room and hopefully I will get an opportunity before I depart and I will add a review of that too.

    « Holiday Stay »

WiFi awful. Room re decorated when could have done with a proper refurbishment e.g. cracked bathroom floor tiles, no window locks, 1 sash window won't even stay open, unable 2 turn off all lighting circuits from bed. Staff couldn't be more helpful :-) but VERY badly let down by chain not refurbishing rooms properly.

Stayed at the Dower House for a family wedding. Arrived on Friday night later than expected and went down for dinner. Despite the restaurant being fairly empty we had to wait over an hour for our food and then when it came out it was cold. Spoke to a member of staff & he did remove the cost of all food from our bill. On the Saturday our family wedding was at the hotel. This was miles better. The food was great and they had really done the venue up beautifully. I couldn't fault anything. The rooms we stayed in were clean and had everything that was needed but they were small and dated. My toiler cistern wasn't properly attached to the wall so you had to steady it every time you wanted to flush it. My brother and his wife had a family room which was much larger but very difficult to get to with a 9 week old baby as it was up steep steps & there was no way you could get a buggy up there. My young niece was sleeping on a sofa bed which was ok for a 4 year old but would have been impossible for anyone older to sleep on as it was all springs. Road noise was also quite a problem. Overall the staff were very helpful and the wedding was lovely but the hotel needs quite a bit of attention.
