    « Midweek break »

We stayed on a 2 night package of bed, breakfast and evening meal which was very good value. Our room was large, clean but cold - a small radiator in the corner. When I enquired at reception I was told heating was on a timer and hadn't come on yet, which I thought was quite bizarre for a hotel. Food was lovely but service at dinner on our first night was very slow. However 2nd night improved greatly. All in all a nice break.

« Ok but could be improved. »

We booked a 2 night stay which included dinner and breakfast on both days. On arrival, the receptionist was very friendly & welcoming and gave us clear directions to our room. The building is very characterful and nicely furnished. Our room was quite small with very little room between the end of the bed & the dressing table. The bed was a zip linked king and although one side was quite firm, the side I slept on was far too soft for me & I woke up with backache on both mornings. The decor & furnishings are dated and the whole room could do with updating. We found the walls between rooms thin; we could hear coughing from the room next door and when they plugged an appliance into the wall. The bathroom had a very dated shower but that said, the shower was strong with immediate hot water & the towels were a good size. Breakfast was very good and dinner on our first night was enjoyable but we didn't enjoy it nearly as much on our second night. On our second evening, they didn't have any of the wine we'd enjoyed with our dinner on our first night, which was disappointing. We didn't use the leisure facilities so can't comment on those. The bar areas are pleasant and we found the staff warm and friendly. To be honest, three out of five is probably a bit low but I couldn't give a four, 3.5 is probably a fairer score. I can't give higher because of the room in general, the uncomfortable bed and the dated bathroom. .

    « Outrageous Prices »

A one-off visit but the reception was the hallmark of The Crown Hotel ! The dearest drinks around the UK and not very good , the San Miguel had been around for some time , flat and cool - not cold . Non alcoholic drinks are the same price as your average alcoholic drinks . A look at the menu (apart from Sunday Lunch) totally outrageous Prices- probably the dearest steak in N Yorks and starters averaging £7 ? really needs a rethink to attract some of the 3000 locals who have several much smarter , upmarket dining options within a 5 mile radius . Poor decor and attention to customers expectations in the immediate bar area sets a very poor impression . How different could this old coaching house be ?

    « Return visit »

Clean, well presented, traditional coaching inn with pleasant staff. The decor in the rooms is a little dated, but beds comfortable, bathroom newly refurbished and excellent breakfast cooked to order in the morning. Swimming pool in the hotel a bonus, particularly when travelling with children. No lift, but lovely old staircase with shallow rise on the stairs, if the lack of a lift is an issue for you. Our second stay there, as we have family in the area and we would stay again.

    « Nice little break »

Just come back from nice little weekend break with my wife , was booked last minute for a break and birthday treat for wife. On arrival to hotel you drive into nice secure car park at rear of hotel , reception staff were friendly and check in really quick, room was nice and clean just what you would expect from pub type hotel , bath and shower was nice size and plenty of room and fresh large clean towels. We had booked two nights breakfast with evening meal both nights and both nights meal was good I wouldn't say fantastic but still nice. Breakfast both days was very good little busy Sunday morning but still no problem getting a table. We both really enjoyed the weekend and although we like to try new places all the time wouldn't rule out staying here again.

« Good for discount price »

Stayed for the weekend on a Travelzoo deal , 2 nights plus 1 dinner and breakfasts. Good bits and bad Hotel is right off the Main Street in Boroughbridge, nice car park at rear. Rooms are a bit dated and need an upgrade but all clean and a good shower, Tv needs to be wall mounted as whoever is furthest away in bed (me) has to dislocate there neck to see it. Pillows are uncomfortable. Plenty of tea/coffee in room, and food in the restaurant/bar was very good. Very good prices on drinks for a hotel with Carlsberg @ £2.99 pint ???? Excellent breakfast. The town is small but ok for a little wander, plenty of coffee shops etc Would recommend a trip to Ripon which is 15mins away, has some nice one off gift type shops. Would recommend the hotel for a cheap getaway if you can find a deal. Would stay again.

    « Pleasent hotel »

Stayed here for a week Nice hotel felt was little dated in places tho . Check in with fast and friendly was there to early was allowed to leave my luggage there while I went away to do other things.....big secure car park.....room was very clean had everything I needed felt old and dated tho......breakfast was continental and you could order hot food ordered scrambled eggs on toast was proper watery....had cooked breakfast another day was good .....in the local town there is shop spar and Indian close by which I thought was good

    « A lovely, relaxing stay. »

Stayed for 2 nights using it as a base, however we ate in there, used the spa in there, drank in there and could find no issues at all with the place. The staff were very friendly and certainly efficient. Would definitely like to stay again in the not too distant future. Thanks to all. Kev

« Weekend to see friens »

Used the hotel as a base of operations . This is the second Best Western Hotel we have use & I must say their really good at what they do . The room was very comfortable & clean .Not the best of view from the window but who cares . Little noise . The internet eventually worked. Breakfast was varied & filling. There were also plenty of shops close by enough alternatives for eating & drinking. Car parking was also free which was a bonus . Could not fault them in anyway. I would recommend .

    « Enjoyable weekend! »

We have just returned from a very enjoyable 3 night stay at this hotel. Comments from others about wonderful breakfasts, leisure centre etc are all spot on. The breakfasts were excellent and not the usual cheap bacon/sausage served up at more supposedly 'up market' establishments. The choice was extensive too. Evening meal was good if a little on the expensive side for a 3 star hotel. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful where necessary especially Jan (breakfast) and Kate (evening) along with Andrew(?). Our room was huge and the bathroom looked like it had recently been upgraded. As other guests have found, the lack of a socket(s) by the bed is rather annoying, especially in such a large room. Also, something appeared to be missing to make use of the space, such as a coffee table? The leisure centre is definitely a bonus with a good range of gym equipment, nice pool and jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Secure parking too is a bonus. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will return when in the area again. Thank you!

    « A Slight Lack of Warmth »

I can't really knock the place for practicality. Old fashioned and a bit tired re decor in some places but as a place to stay - very convenient & efficient & the pool/spa & communal areas were very nice. My lack of a full 5 star rating is due to some of the staff being a tad too efficient & lacking a bit of customer service. They were never rude - just lacking the northern charm & warmth I'd come to expect. A 'did you enjoy your day' or 'everything ok for you' every now & then particularly from the reception staff would have been welcome & not made us feel like just another paying customer passing through. Personal preference I suppose - I'd not say don't stay there - it was cosy enough - just not what I'd come to expect.

    « Great short break. »

Just returned after an enjoyable two night stay at the Crown.Staff superb food excellent,I had smoked haddock which was excellent and my wife enjoyed her vegetarian meal.Breakfast great and room was fine.Good secure parking but avoid a space under the trees if possible.Would definitely return.Garry Pudsey.

    « Great hotel »

This is a lovely little hotel in the middle of town. It has its own secure car park and the hotel has a spa within it as well. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The rooms are a fairly high standard although some of the rooms do have creaky beds and no plug sockets next to the bed (a bit of a pain if using a mobile as an alarm clock). The Spa has Sauna, Steam room, Jacuzzi, Pool and Gym and is a nice little bonus either at the end of the day or first thing in the morning. Having stayed in some of the other hotels in the area this is the one that we keep coming back too when we are working around this area and is always nice to walk back into at the end of the day.

    3
« Review of the bar only. »

We came in here as part of a gently stroll round the town's pubs. As expected, the Crown is very smart and the bar was very comfortable. The service was friendly and the beer was good. The only downside for me is that this Felt very much like a hotel bar and, certainly when we were there, it didn't have the atmosphere and ambience of a straightforward pub.

« yeay food is improved »

Still lovely people and great service, the food issue has been addressed and is now very nice, the sausages at breakfast are really nice, wifi is a tad iffy but there is a computer in reception which you can use.

    « Relaxing friendly hotel »

Just had a two night stay in this hotel and it could not be faulted on anything! Friendly helpful staff good food and a lovely clean hotel, everything to make a lovely break. Good secure parking and a lovely pool and jacuzzi to relax in .Thankyou for a really nice time would definitely recommend !

« End of holiday relaxing stay over »

Loved the fact that the hotel was quirky and full of character and not been over modernished Staff very friendly and helpful ,food delicious.nice iccle swimming pool (not very warm) but felt nice and refreshing after a 7hr flight

    « Short break »

The staff here are brilliant especially Kate who was always smiling and nothing was to much trouble.Tracy was a very hands on manager and made sure things ran smoothly. There is no lift and if there are no ground floor rooms available the stairs are a bit of a challenge so I think it would be nice if an offer was made to help with your bags. The food was very good and the breakfast was one of the best we have had and the choice was exceptional. Creaking stairs etc. are things you expect in an old hotel but there are a few cobwebs and dust about. We had a couple of issues and they were dealt with very efficiently. The room we were in number 81 was a big room but there was a humming noise outside all night and my husband didn't get much sleep but I think most of the rooms have some sort of noise such as traffic but nothing can be done about this. There is a gated car park for hotel guests at no cost unlike some hotels we have been to and there was never a problem parking. The swimming pool and spa pool were excellent and we had a very relaxing break at The Crown and we would return.

    « All a hotel should be »

We booked a two night stay here to meet up with friends who also stayed. Checkin was very efficient, and Tracey the manager on duty was very helpful, including finding us information about charging up our electric car. As we needed to leave early after our second night, before the advertised breakfast time, she told us we could have an early continental breakfast if we wished. Sure enough, the breakfast room was available with a lovely cold breakfast selection, and although we were well before the opening ti,e. we were offered a cooked breakfast too. We all ate dinner at the hotel restaurant and everything we ordered was lovely! Tasty, fresh and hot - three of us could not finish our meals as there was so much! Our room was spotless and despite overlooking the main road, was quiet too. We made use of the hotel pool on the first night and for the most part, we were the only ones in it. The jacuzzi was very relaxing. The gym is a little small and basic but had the equipment we all wanted. It is always good to stay in historic inns and the walls of the corridor have photographs showing how it looked over the years. To sum up,lovely staff who were smiling and helpful, a great location to explore the area and we would go back there again with no hesitation!

    « EXCELLANT »

Eight of us have just spent a weekend at the Crown Hotel. From initially booking to the booking out of the hotel we were impressed. The staff were all very friendly and efficient indeed a credit to the hotel. The rooms were well appointed and spotless. The food both breakfast and dinner was superb. We could not have asked for more.

    « Traditional and welcoming »

Very nice hotel, traditional and in places in need of an update. However very clean, comfortable and spacious. Bedrooms have everything you need although they could do with an update such as air con and new windows. A small fan is provided in the room which did help a little on a warm late summers evening. Unusual to get an actual key for the room instead of a keycard which I guess is due to the traditional ambience of the hotel. Had a meal in the restaurant and it was excellent, plenty of choice and cooked to perfection. Breakfast was also excellent too and could not be faulted. Staff friendly and welcoming. All in all a very good level of accommodation in a traditional small town and would not hesitate in staying here again.

    5
    « Afternoon Tea »

Traditional country pub style hotel set in the middle of the town . Staff welcoming and friendly , very popular with locals which I always believe to be a positive . Relaxing atmosphere inside and the afternoon tea was delicious , well presented and reasonably priced .

« Rude Staff, Terrible Rooms, Overpriced. »

The hotel manager was very rude and abrupt. She looked down her noses at us as we were in training gear (we were there before a triathlon) We were told we had to leave our bike worth £7,500 locked up outside or "I will ask you to leave the hotel along with your bike". We asked for an early breakfast which was set up the next day, however the night porter said. You can't have tea as I haven't made any. The drinks machines were not working either. The noise on the evening was atrocious and did not get to sleep all night. The wifi didn't work ver well at all, the rooms were shabby to say the lease and the hotel was like the hotel that jack built. I have stayed in £40 a night hotels and been treated better than I did at Best Western Crown.... I contacted the manager (who my complaint was about) and she said that the owner has decided not to give a refund... All this for £180.00 DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Spend your money where you will be spoken to politely and treated as a guest. Very poor and disappointing service and the owner is not willing to speak to me. Best Western...I would remove my brand from this hotel immediately.

    « Weekend break »

We were a group of 6 women who had an overnight stay before doing Fountains Abbey park run on Saturday morning. This hotel was perfect for us in every way! The staff were lovely and even though breakfast had finished when we got back from the run they made us bacon sandwiches. The evening dinner was great and the spa was lovely. Location in the middle of Boroughbridge was perfect. We got some walking guides from the tourist information and had a beautiful walk on Friday afternoon when we arrived. Rooms were dated but characterfull, large and spotlessly clean. Excellent value for money.

    4
    « Crowning glory »

Functional, clean, tidy, quiet and very friendly. The rooms are all good sized, I have stayed there multiple times and been in most of the rooms now. There are some four poster bedrooms, nice but probably not worth any more than a standard double really. The gym and pool is nice, a little small at popular times of the day mind. Breakfast is nice, all types of food available.

    5
    « CROWN INN BOROUGHBRIDGE »

We went on a bed breakfast and evening meal with £25 allowance per persons for dinner. We found this a very good deal. The Dinner was very nice with a number of selections. Breakfast was also good with good selection of food. The room we where in was on the front and even with the window open it wasnt noisy. Bathroom and bedroom furnishings were of a good standard.

    4
    « Pleasant break »

We booked a 2night break with Travel Zoo. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We found our room small, dark and airless and , although we opened our window fully the small fan provided was essential! Bed very comfortable and bathroom had an efficient shower and nice fluffy towels. The pool was enjoyable and relaxing and towels provided. Breakfasts were good, although very greasy! Dinner was nice but our £25 each allowance with the deal we purchased was insufficient to cover anything but a main course! Unless you want the usually food you,d eat at home! We enjoyed our break but unlikely to return.

    5
    « Short break »

We went to this lovely hotel after a short track driving session at Tockwith Autodrome & it was wonderful. Set in the picturesque village of Boroughbridge, this old coaching inn didn't disappoint. The staff are friendly, the facilities good & the rooms pleasant. We had a lovely early birds meal in the bar, washed down with a bottle of prosecco, then retired to our room for a sound nights sleep. Breakfast was cooked to order, not the en masse elbows first buffet that seems to be the norm these days, which made a really pleasant change. Both my wife and I would definitely recommend this hotel & are looking forward to going again.

    « Great Holiday »

Good hotel, décor a bit tired and dated and could do with a refurb, very good if you just need just stay for a couple of nights, but for longer you need more draw space for your clothes. Tracy the Manager was great nothing was too much trouble and if you spoke to her things got done. One little thing was I enjoy mustard with my sausage and bacon and usually have to ask each morning for it at other hotels, after mentioning it to her , it was put out each morning for me. Little things like that make the difference to a holiday. One day our room was not cleaned on our return at 4pm , but when I mentioned to her she sorted this very quickly. My only problem is that they offer a lighter menu between 5 and 7 pm which suits my 13 year old grandson more, but when returning from a day out he enjoys a swim in the pool, and is allowed in there until 7pm, so using the lighter menu for that time is quite impossible and the childrens menu is geared at younger visitors. Maybe in the future they could extend the time to 8pm.

    « Great Spa deal »

Bought a Spa deal voucher that included afternoon tea for my daughter as a birthday present and visited today and had a lovely time. The gym was well equipped with lots of equipment and was lovely and cool. The pool was lovely as was the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. Towels and robes were provided - only slight negative was that the changing rooms were so hot and stuffy. We kept our robes on and sat in the lounge area for afternoon tea which was very nice - my only criticism was that the scones were cold, I always think they should be served warm. Lovely hotel in a lovely area and a bargain with the voucher!

    « Amazing »

My partner and I stayed in august for 6 days for his business trip. On arrival after a long drive from Wales we were greeted by a friendly and warm smile from the lady on reception and given all the information needed for our stay. Once in our room we unpacked and got settled in and the room was amazingly clean and quite big. Only thing was the bed was a little uncomfortable but we soon adjusted by sleeping on top of the duvet, but that isn't anything bad just our preference. After a good night's sleep we went for breakfast once again greeted with smiles and help fulness. There was a good range of hot and cold food as well as drinks and very good value for money for the quality of the food given, especially their black pudding but once again everyone to their own taste. I would just like to comment on the lovely ladies who worked in housekeeping at the wonderful job I watched them doing who couldn't of been any helpful offering clean towels and also seeing one lady sweep the staircase with a dust pan and brush doing an exerlent and thorough job keep up the good work ladies. All in all it was a lovely stay and would recommend it to anyone my only slight fault in the hotel would be a small fridge for the room would be highly recommended and then just perfect ... Can't wait to vist again soon .

    « A very pleasant lunch »

Fillet steak, on a Monday? Yes and it was very good. It rained this morning, so golf was out of the question, so lunch seemed a good idea. The Crown Hotel has secure parking (why does it need secure parking?) and has a nice restaurant and a bar dining areas. The steak was good and the staff were very pleasant too.

    « Overnight stay »

Needed a local hotel for a family gathering. Older fashioned hotel. Very helpful staff. Lovely breakfast. Bedroom felt tired but was clean. I would stay again. Note to self, bring swimwear as there is a pool.

    « Dissapointing visit »

My husband and I have just returned today from a two day visit to this hotel, we booked it with travel zoo whom we have used before ,our room was okay but when we went down for dinner to a very empty dining room we were pushed in the furthest corner next to a door away from any other guests, although there were plenty of much nicer tables , was this because of booking with travel zoo it made us feel inferior ,the food was pretty bad and the cooked breakfast was swimmimg in grease not a very pleasant experience ,having looked forward to a couple of days away it wasn't what we hoped for .

« Short break to visit York and Ripon. »

Decided to stay in the Crown in Boroughbridge because of its location to York and Ripon and because of its facilities. The welcome was great and the family room was large enough for the three of us with a good bathroom and tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel is old fashioned but this is because it is retaining its couch house history. Saying this it has a lovely pool with jacuzzi, steam room and sauna that we used frequently. The restaurant was excellent serving local produce with a good selection of meals and the bar had local ales as well.

    4
    « Good value »

Old fashioned but clean and comfortable good staff to make you welcome, all facilities required, in the rooms, nice lounge areas and an indoor pool with gym attached. Would recommend, will book again later this year

« Ideal for short relaxing break »

Hotel is perfect for a relaxing break be that a couple of days or longer. On arrival staff were welcoming and had room ready. We were allocated a room with a four poster bed. Even though is over looked the main street is was relatively quiet and we slept well. There are quiet areas within the hotel where you can sit and read, enjoy a drink and chill out. The hotel is clean and tidy and well looked after and the staff are polite, helpful and amiable. The English breakfast is freshly cooked and very tasty. There are a selection of other items also available. Dinner in either restaurant of bar area provides a choice of meals. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Leisure centre provided me with what I was looking for a quiet area with sauna and swimming pool. The local small town provides places to go for a walk and a coffee or ice cream. Only downside is lack of small fridge in room to put some water, fizzy drinks or nibbles. Will we return - absolutely.

    5
    « Excellent hotel »

We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay here. Especially the meal in the restaurant which was first class. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The room was very clean and spacious. The swimming pool was lovely. Would defiantly stay again

    « Lovely stay »

We had two lovely nights hers. Nice village with lovely river walk. The hotel was very welcoming, staff very friendly. The breakfast was superb, and cooked to order. We didn't have an evening meal as such, but had lovely sandwiches. The bedroom was well furnished, comfy bed and pillows. Lovely sized bathroom. The pool was nice and facilities very clean. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and if we were in the area again, would certainly not drive past.

    « Good »

Stayed here on business and was recommended this hotel by a colleague. Good free parking and the hotel was easy enough to find. Staff very welcoming and I had a very thorough run through of the hotel and facilities. No lift but I was asked if I needed help with my luggage onto the 2nd floor which was nice. I was a little surprised to find a single bed in my room however it was an incredibly comfortable bed and the room had excellent amenities - good working bath/shower with free toiletries. Telephone beside the bed and tea/coffee and hot chocolate plus a cookie! TV had Freeview, hairdryer in drawer, extra blanket in wardrobe... Can't think what else you would need. Newspaper was provided in the morning at my request. I did get lost at one point as the hotel has lots of different rooms/corridors. The swimming pool was brilliant and lockers/towels provided for free. Jacuzzi/steam and sauna were all excellent. Breakfast was very good - all fresh and clean and hot food served on request which I liked. Scrambled eggs and mushrooms for me :) I had dinner one night in the hotel which was fine. A little restricted for vegetarians but the food tasted good enough. Location wise - I was visiting Cumbria so I didn't really explore too much but there is a Spar round the corner for essentials, a Chinese, Indian, Pizza place, Fish and Chip shop, Morrison's a 4 min drive away. Also a hairdresser's, few boutiques. Harrogate is 20 min drive away and York about 30 min. Check-out was as smooth as check-in and all staff were personable and friendly. I liked this hotel very much.

« Nice hotel, not so sure about the food »

Stayed here last week, just for a night at very short notice as I was unexpectedly in the area. Hotel looked nice and was a reasonable size car park. Check in was friendly and efficient. Comfortable bed, clean room, good bathroom. Bar was very nice, all the staff I encountered were first class. I had a scallops and black pudding with bacon for starter which wasn't very good. Scallops over cooked, black pudding under done and soggy with oil and bacon burned. Like the chef didn't care. For main I had a homemade burger and chips which was much much better and thoroughly enjoyed. Would stay again and give the chef a second chance

« Wonderful, accommodating staff and fantastic service »

We booked out six rooms for a business trip and were so pleased with the wonderful service we received from check in to departure. We had a very early start one morning and a full breakfast was provided for our team of 10 hours before the rest of the hotel was awake! A lovely hotel and perfect staff - thank you!

    5
« Super location for trips to York, Harrogate and Pickering »

Good clean hotel and a lot of care from the staff for your comfort. Boroughbridge is a small village close to the A1 and ideal as a base for getting around North Yorkshire. One first night in the restaurant made for an easy transition into a relaxed weekend. But there are plenty of good quality eating places too around North Yorkshire and some super characterful public houses to visit.

    2
« Tired hotel, and too expensive »

i stayed her for five nights, but wouldn't stay here again. Lots of lovely places to stay in the area, this one is below par. It's too expensive for what it is. The Food is not great. Rooms are a bit dark and dingy. The decor is very dated. Dirty windows, cheap biscuits, cheap loo roll The staff seem somewhat tired and disengaged. hmmmmmm a shame........

    4
    « Great place for a stopover »

Great little hotel situated in a small village not far from the A1. We found it to be an ideal hotel for an overnight stay - easy to find, easy (and secure) parking, pleasant staff, free wi-fi, super clean rooms with well stocked bathrooms and good showers. The public areas are clean and well decorated but the bedrooms could do with updating. The breakfasts are superb (a full Dales breakfast being exactly that). The only downside was no AC (and the rooms were warm) and if you open the windows the roads outside can be quite noisy. However, these were minor issues.

    2
    « Disappointing »

After arranging a trip to nearby lightwater theme park for myself and my nine year old son, i searched for a nearby hotel with a swimming pool to keep us entertained durung the evening of our arrival. As the surrounding area is villages i thought the pool would be an ideal way to keep my son busy as there was not much else happening and a good way for myself to unwind after a long drive from glasgow and a day on rollercoasters. On our arrival at 6pm we were informed that there were only certain times of the day that children were allowed in the pool, which we were not informed about when booking. The receptionist told us that we would have to be out the pool by 7pm, this was not very good but better than nothing, we checked in, took our bags to our room and headed to the leisure club with our swimming gear. When we arrived at the leisure club the receptionist informed us that children's pool time had finished at 5:30pm and we could not get into the pool, we would have to come back at 10am in the morning and left us standing there. My 9 year old son was really disappointed as you can imagine. So we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant. We placed our order at the bar with the pleasant barman, however 50 minutes later when our food hadnt arrived i had to go back to the bar to track down our food, it arrived 10 minutes later. I found it poor that we had to wait an hour as there were only three other families in the restaurant. The overnight stay was not enjoyable due to these two incidents. Food was really nice.

« Pleasant stay, hotel a little tired »

Nice hotel, needs a bit of a refurb as it is dated. Plenty of secure parking around the back and the staff are very friendly. Breakfast was absolutely fine, self serve continental and menu for cooked options. Had a very good nights sleep and even though it is dated I would return if I needed a room in this area.

« rooms are in need of a serious upgrade refurbish! »

The Crown hotel is a large old fashioned coaching inn, with lots of corridors mazes leading to ample areas to sit around and relax. Lighting in the bathroom not very good, the extractor fan can not cope with the steam from the shower, which at times seams to go hot and cold when another room takes water. The rooms are very basic, we had room number 36,which was a executive double, which reminded us of the basic old style seaside bed and breakfast hotel. Only we were on an free Best Western rewards night and an breakfast was not included in the rate, room only. We had a very nice large English fry up in the Three Horse Shoes pub just situated straight over the road, for £5 each. The room we had was in need of an refurbish. the lining wall covering was blistered all over, electrical sockets had paint marks all over them, paint was yellowing and the sash window pane wood was black and very dirty. Mould spots on the window netting and grout in the shower was blackened. The ceiling light in the middle of the room had a badly plastered mark next to it. The furniture in the room was old and marked, the dressing table was uneven , when you put your make up down onto the dresser, the make up rolled onto the floor!! Two people staying in the room but only one complementary bottle of water left out for us and some sweets. Free WI-FI was ok. Bed was on casters tended to move easily. Old fashioned normal door key for your room. Room 36 looks onto the Three Horse shoes pub and you get the noise from the bands playing and people talking in the outside sitting area. The hotel is very nice down stairs but the rooms are in need of a serious upgrade refurbish!

« Great Hotel in a lovely village »

Stayed here on a Travelzoo deal. Ideal location for touring north Yorkshire. Friendly, helpful staff at reception, in the restaurant and in the leisure centre. Rooms well presented and clean. We stayed in room 44 at the rear of the property. Exceptionally clean, comfy bed, lots of hot water. Couldn't fault the room. Very good breakfast menu. Fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals. Full English and Fish options. We ate our evening meal in the hotel on the first nightl. The menu is quite expensive standard pub food. This was a sunday evening and we did notice on the 2nd night their was a specials board. Good reasonably priced beer. Comfortable lounge area. We found the leisure facilities excellent. Clean. Lovely pool and good steam room etc. Staff were really helpful. Free wifi and good secure parking. Good walks by the river and a selection of coffee shops in the village. We would definitely recommend this hotel and would go back if we were staying in the area again.

A great hotel in the centre of a lovely village. Excellent service and good value for money. Ample parking at rear of hotel. Easy access from the M1. Would definitely recommend a visit for business or pleasure. Great leisure facilities available to all guests.

« Nice area with many places on interest. »

The hotel was very comfortable and well presented .I notice that some contributors suggest it needs an upgrade but I think the decor is in keeping with the surroundings. Found all of the staff very welcoming and always happy to help. The reception staff gave us lots of information about the area and beyond-even giving us printouts of how to get to Leeds by train and advising against trying to go there by car and thereby avoiding many of the snarl ups we undoubtedly would have encountered. Coming from rural Scotland we found all the information given very helpful. Visited here for 4 days. Boroughbridge is a very nice little town with lots of attractions in the area .An area worth exploring and a pleasant stay at this hotel.

    « Exceptional »

Room was traditional and well presented/clean. What sold it for me was the food. Evening meal was excellent. Attention to detail was everything and very tasty. Wine list was varied and very reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and attentive. Overall an excellent experience. Can't wait to book again.

« Another enjoyable stay at The Crown »

This was our second stay at The Crown in Boroughbridge and we were not disappointed. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was clean and also spacious. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and enjoyed our meals. Also the breakfast was excellent. At the self service area we could help ourselves to cereals, juice, fruit and toast but the English breakfast was freshly cooked to order. We made use of the leisure centre which was free for hotel guests. My husband used the gym and I enjoyed the swimming pool. Boroughbridge is a charming village in the Yorkshire Dales, well situated to visit York, Ripon, Knaresborough and Harrogate. We also paid a visit to Fountains Abbey and water Gardens, a World heritage site about 30 minutes drive away. We are looking forward to visiting the area again, next year and staying at The Crown.

    « Good value »

We stayed here as part of a travel zoo offer. The rooms are very clean but probably ready for a bit of an update, although it is an old coaching in with many authentic features. The leisure centre is treacly good. Breakfast was good but we had a bit of a wait for our cooked breakfast as it was busy on the Sunday morning, in complete contrast to Saturday evening when the restaurant was empty. Staff nice.

« Great Pool, Wonderful Breakfast »

Great Coaching Inn. Staff could not have been more helpful. Small bedroom however just right for a one night stop. Excellent dinner. Breakfast a real treat and enough to take many through to dinner. Break your journey here when going north.

We attended a friends birthday celebration this weekend and couldn't fault the food, ambience or service. Lovely spacious room, immaculately presented. None of our party of eighteen had a word of criticism. Well done, we shall return.

    « Enjoyed our stay. »

We stayed here for one night on a Travelzoo deal and would certainly stay again. Our room wasn't very big, but it was very clean and comfortable and we had an excellent nights sleep. Dinner was very good and breakfast too. The staff were exceptional, all very helpful and we had excellent service. A big plus is the secure parking on the large car park.

« Decent hotel in a great location »

We had never previously been to Boroughbridge & we were very impressed with this little town. Friendly with good shops & nice little walks, on the doorstep of the hotel. The hotel itself is a little past its best, in need of an update really. Clean & comfortable & run by lovely staff. The room was on the small side & the walls are thin. No noise from outside the hotel (except the crows in the early eveinig) but you can hear conversations & general movement from the adjoining rooms. We were on a Travelzoo deal so for the price we paid we were happy. Breakfast is very good made with good quality ingredients except for the bread that is available to toast yourself at the buffet section is a far lower quality than that cooked in the kitchen with eggs on toast etc. Smoked haddock cooked in milk is a breakfast I haven't seen before. Our deal included an evening meal which was satisfactory, let down only by horrible leaden tasteless bread rolls & the reheated boiled new potatoes. The smoked chicken salad & prawn cocktail starters were very good, as was the seabass & the rack of lamb. Nicely cooked veg & decent desserts too. We used the indoor pool where towels are provided for guests, the sauna & the steam room. Very clean & a pleasant environment for a swim. There are plenty of cosy sitting areas and a bar with only 2 choices of beer. Secure parking at the back exited with a code on a keypad. The free Wifi was a bit intermittent & the TV reception kept breaking up. Happy to go back on a similar deal. As an extra note I would like to recommend the excellent pork pies from Greenwoods butchers just along the road, they are the best I have tasted for years folks, thin pastry filled with meat & hand poured juices. Not part of a hotel review I know but I thought you TA readers might like to know.

« Lovely room and staff but.... »

Really nice hotel and friendly helpful staff however would not eat here again. Food was lacking in taste - had the steak burger which had little seasoning, had the sticky toffee pudding which tasted like a smart price one from a supermarket however the ice cream that was with it was nice. Had a pint of lime and soda water which was £3.90!! due to them not having any soda water on tap but 60p for a dash of lime is steep. If they had told me before pouring the drink I would have changed my mind. Would definately visit again as the accomodation and pool were lovely as were the staff, if they can fix the food here it will be brilliant

« Not impressed at all »

There was no where else open for food after seven pm on Sunday evening. It's looks nice and the surroundings are nice. I waited at the bar for a few minutes and a nice chap informed me they were still serving but there was a thi try minute delay for food. I said that was fine where were we to sit and he directed us to a choice of four tables. We chose one and had a look at the menu. Waited and waited eventually catching a waitresses eye who sent over the waiter. The man opposite us who had ordered two minutes before us got his wine starter and main course drank it and ate up and we are still waiting. A couple who came in ages after us got their meal. An hour has now gone by. My partner went to the bar for more drinks and was told your meal is coming. Except it was another thirty minutes. The meal was ok but only ok the plates were aired not hot. The chips were soft over cooked and so dark they looked burned the texture was not to my taste at all. Burger was ok as was the fish which was nice. No one returned to ask if we were happy with our meal or wanted a desert The staff were nice something went badly wrong but there was no explanation or apology. Won't be going back.

« Brilliant would go back anytime! »

Staff are all very friendly, food was very good, loved the spa and everywhere was very clean, we all loved it. The town has some very nice shops, and the river is beautiful, we even saw a kingfisher on our walk along the river bank!

    « Comfortable Night »

My wife and I spent one night here while travelling in Yorkshire. The hotel was welcoming and efficient from check in to check out. The room was comfortable and had all you would expect from an hotel in this price range. The menu in the dining room although not extensive was varied and the meals were of a good quality. Secure parking is an added bonus.I would happily use this hotel in future as a base for exploring the local are including Harrogate and the Dales.

    « Comfortable Night »

Spent one night here while travelling further north. The hotel is very efficient from check in to check out . The room was comfortable and had all you would expect from a hotel in this price range. The evening menu although not vast had a good choice of dishes and the meals we had were of a good standard. Of particular note is the secure car park which requires a pass code to exit. I would happily stay here for longer as it could be used as a base for exploring the local area including the Yorkshire Dales, Harrogate and Knaresborough.

« Good value hotel in a pleasant town »

The Crown is a pleasant hotel with friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere. The room I stayed in was very pleasant though some might say in need of some updating. Being at the front of the hotel, there was some traffic noise which may bother some - but there are plenty of other rooms away from the road. I ate in the restaurant on one evening (there are some good restaurants in and around Boroughbridge too) and it was very good- tasty and well presented. The breakfast was also very good with very effcient and friendly staff, and a really good selection of different items. All in all a very nice place to stay - and extremely convenient for touring North Yorkshire, whether it be Harrogate, York or The Dales.

    « QUAINT & FRIENDLY »

I stay here once or twice a year for business. They are very friendly and the hotel, although rambling, is quite confortable. I found the restaurant to be fine, with likely one of the finest breakfasts in the UK - North Sea Kippers! (smoked herring for the yanks) There are a couple of country walks along by the river Ure which are delightful in summer. Locally there is a Fish & Chip shop and an Indian Restaurant.

    « Not a good dining experience »

This may be an attractive hotel but the food lets it down big time. We had starters of carrot and split pea soup which the hubs said was ok and mum and I had a melon, Palmer ham wrapped bread stick and olives which was ok but the melon was tasteless and the salad garnish was poor with a pot of olives so small you needed a magnifying glass to find it, think two black olives and two green ones!( and not queen olives) At this point I wasn't too unhappy as I don't go for quantity, quality is my requirement. This was lacking but hey ho I thought it's melon what can you do. The main meal said it all, the two fish pies were tasteless with minute prices of fish, white and salmon at a guess, there was also a couple of prawns but these were obviously cooked before they went in the dish as they were like bullets but the truly yuck thing was the 'coral' bits off the scallops, even though there wasn't any scallops in it, I cirtainly do not want these (which I would through away) in my fish pie, it's not as if they had any taste ( the hubs was brave enough to try them). Mums beef burger was truly inedible, I tried it and it was burned as well as dried out, it could have been cardboard in my mouth. This was complained about and they did nock the price of this off the bill. No one came and asked us how the meal was and we were sat for well over 1/2 an hour waiting for the plates to be cleared. We shall not be eating here again and regret trying it as we know of a very worthy eatery not far away which we should have stuck with. I won't mention accessibility because quite frankly you'll be better off going elswere.

« Nice rambly old coaching inn »

Lots of character, plus modern amenities such as a health spa. The bedroom was comfortable, quiet and well-lit (which doesn't always happen). There were several areas where one could just sit and relax. The food was fine, and good value.

« Lovely place to stay when completing the Way of the Roses cycle ride »

I stayed in this hotel twice in May 2016 when completing different cycle rides. It is wonderful and very cycle friendly with secure bike storage. The staff are welcoming, efficient and the spa is divine after a long cycle with a jacuzzi, pool, steam room and sauna. I stayed in a the same executive twin room both visits. The room was well appointed and I enjoyed a quality sleep both times. The food was very good with an ample spread of options and easily catering for hungry cyclists (some of whom are vegetarian). It was a fabulous rest in the middle of a 2 day adventure completing the Way of the Roses cycle ride

« Ideal Hotel to explore North Yorkshire »

Easy to get to Hotel from M1 or A1, then easy to reach places like Fountains Abbey, York, Sherwood Forest and Rievaulx Abbey. Not to mention many more historical sites. Had 4 good nights sleep, bed and room were very good. Food at breakfast and evening was very good and had good choice. Parking was secure with automatic gates in and out. No problem with being disabled in this Hotel.

    « Noise »

Stayed at this lovely hotel from 20/05/16 till 22/05/16, female on reception knew I was there for work, placed in the worst room possible room 30, first night consisted of lying in bed listening to people talking whilst coming up the stairs- very little sleep, 2nd night then consisted of listening to a drunken football club singing and just being noise you which equated to 5 hours sleep. Probably the worst hotel I've stayed in for sleep, amenities was very good, breakfast and staff at breakfast were excellent, extremely disappointed as lack of sleep has a mass impact on my training course I was on.

    3
    « Disappointing »

As a location for pleasure and sight-seeing, Boroughbridge is a disappointment, offering very little in the way of amenities within the town and few culinary choices. Slightly faded hotel in need of some updating decor-wise but comfortable and friendly enough. Our room was spacious and although situated above the front door, at the top of the stairs, it wasn't noisy, which is a plus. I suspect that its location just off the A1 and its leisure facilities recommend this hotel to business travellers but as a holiday base, we found it disappointing. Sorry.

Other than a poorly stocked bar and wine list the the stay was very good. Ambience and location most acceptable.Within easy reach of many attractions which was the purpose of the visit. The staff very helpful accommodating.

    « Birthday treat »

We stayed as a birthday treat for my husband, booked through travelzoo. It was a lovely hotel, very pleasant and professional staff, the room was small but had everything that you need, the evening meal and breakfast was superb and good quality ingredients, we also ate in the bar at lunchtime and that was very good too. The bonus is the lovely pool and leisure facilities. We would recommend to anyone.

« Old Roman town guarding the Brigantes »

We stayed here on a two night deal, with dinner on the first night, through Travelzoo. It was a birthday treat in April. On first impressions, we were very pleased as BW Crown Hotel is in the centre of Boroughbridge. reading the history, it was one of 19 hostelries along the old A1. Our room was adequate in size, although very warm (due to the radiator in the bathroom being locked fully on). Otherwise, the bed was very comfortable and had a good nights sleep both nights. The restaurant, was full and I must admit the food was lovely (no complaints). The service also could not be faulted. The lovely full breakfast is substantial, too full for us For me only downside was the choice of beer in the bar, not to my taste, so we ventured out found plenty of other options. The best we found was over the bridge: The Grantham Arms (where we ate on the second night) For those who like walking, there are plenty of walks in and around boroughbridge. The canal & locks were a lovely surprise. Didn't know about the monoliths just on the edge of Boroughbridge, worth visiting.

« Nice old coaching inn »

Stayed here on a two night deal with dinner included on the first night. Reasonable sized room with a comfortable bed and a really clean bathroom. Downstairs there are a number of comfortable seating areas with big sofas. Nice bar, very quiet when we were in for lunch (Mon). Lovely steak baguette and prawn sandwich, well filled, tasty and well presented. Barman was welcoming and chatty -just what you want on a wet day. The evening meal was served in the dining room, again nice welcome. Reasonable number of choices on the menu. Food was beautifully cooked and nicely presented. Hot, tasty and unhurried. 'Checkback' was done and they really seemed to want to know we were enjoying the food. We were able to take the rest of our wine through to one of the comfortable seating areas. One real benefit was having the pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna available as part of the deal. Great after a days walking. Don't miss the Devils Arrows at the end of the village.

« High Price Rate - low value experience »

The two rooms were booked in January. One room was good, our double room was very small. There were no toiletries so I had to order them; we asked for a Sunday paper that wasn't delivered. The breakfast was adequate but not much choice of fresh fruit or juice. The price per room £150 I complained to the manager that the cost didn't fit the accommodation. She stated that the hotel had the monopoly in the area so they could charge what they wanted. However, she took off £30. All I can say is , just because you can charge those prices doesn't mean you should.

    « Nice little gem »

Had a nice stay at this hotel. We stayed 2 nights DBB which was great value for money. Food was good in restaurant, however they didn't seem to have the bottle of wine we wanted for 2 nights in a row. They need to monitor this! Also the bar area looked the same as the restaurant, maybe completely partition off or change decor in bar, oh and turn the music up a bit! Despite the above the hotel staff and maids were friendly and there was an added bonus of the swimming pool. Would recommend this hotel as a relaxing break with a homely feel.

    2
    « Underwhelmed and Overcharged - disappointed »

Booked 2 rooms (double and a single) £144 per night double and £133 per night single (Ouch!) I was expecting a wonderful hotel and to be fair the Swimming pool is good and the Gym is not bad. The bar area is pleasant. Bedrooms are relatively small but it is an old coaching inn, however the windows are small and paint is flaking. The bathroom has a major stain and hole in the ceiling the bedrooms just had "past use by date" all over them. The Single room was small and cramped and ridiculously expensive by comparison to a double room (room 58 and 53) they were stiflingly hot overnight. Don't park your car under the trees - it cost me another £5 to pressure wash the Bird droppings off the car. I would have said all of this to the desk clerk but he did not ask - wonder why?

« Restaurant and evening service let this down. »

Room was compact but clean and well equipped. Doors to corridor seem to let in a lot of noise. We had a good deal through Travel zoo 2 nights B&B with spa use, bottle proseco and dinner on one night.£160 dissapointed they don't allow you to pay for upgrade if it's available. Bar staff, reception staff and those on duty at breakfast all excellent. Our Proseco was bought to our room within minutes of us checking in. When we phoned for ice someone came with it immediately. Staff at dinner not very attentive or professional. Service was very slow. Food itself for dinner was not all as described on menu (ie homemade custard and soup out of carton /catteries pack). Main courses uninspiring which was a shame Bar snacks menu very good and food quality and service was good. Breakfast also very good, but again not matching menu items listed as being on buffet were non existent. Hot food cooked to order was very good and wait time good. Spa great very clean and warm a pleasure to use. Overall great. If they give the chef and the evening serving staff a kick to buck up there ideas it could be excellent.

    « A lovely olde world inn »

We had a pleasant stay here, everything has beeen said before. However, we arrived on Thursday and I have to say we must have been 2 of very few there. We were the only ones in for evening meal and the dining room was very cold, I had to go back and get a cardigan. The food was really good but the plates were cold so halfway through our meals the food was cold also. Disappointing. No-one was in the bar afterwards so we just retired to an early night. Breakfast was very nice but cooked breakfast was brought before I had finished my fruit and cerial. The staff were all very nice and friendly. Had there been more guests there it would have had a better ambiance, but that wasn't the hotel's fault.

« Great food, great staff. in need of TLC »

This visit was done through an offer on Travelzoo, and intended to be a chilling few days. On arrival the exterior of the Crown is pleasing to the eye. The secure car park to the rear is easily accessible and provides optimum protection for your vehicle. Entry via the rear entrance takes you past the swimming pool on the left which we didn't use but looked very inviting. We followed signs to Reception and were greeted by a very friendly receptionist, who booked us in efficiently and took our booking for dinner. Our room was not spacious, very clean and tidy, but a little on the warm side. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the shower brilliant, apart from the shabby shower curtain. The interior of the hotel had some interesting period features, such as timber panelling and stone fireplace. The lovely wooden staircase creaked as you would expect something of this age to do, however the finials on top of newel posts were in various states of repair, loose, splintered and one has a nail protruding from it. On entering the restaurant for dinner we were greeted by friendly staff who showed us to our table and took our drink and food order. The food was of high quality and was delicious, leaving us well fed and contented. The décor inside the restaurant was looking tired and splashes of food and drink could be found on the walls in a few places, a touch of redecoration is a minimum requirement to bring back up to standard. Breakfast is a treat, with a varied selection of cold options as well as an excellent full English, although considering the rural location would have liked to have seen local sausages used. Overall a pleasant stay was had, the staff were excellent, and at times a little over attentive (not a bad point), and with a little TLC this 3 star rated hotel could easily make 4 stars. I would recommend for anybody visiting the region wishing to stay in a period property, with character and friendly staff. All in all excellent value for money. I would not hesitate to return at a later date

    « A Relaxing Break »

Stayed here for a three day break with my partner. This is an old coaching hotel so as one might expect, dark wood furnishings and lots of pictures depicting hunting and old scenes from the locality. Receptionist was friendly and helpful with check in quick. The room was a decent size and well appointed. The bathroom was far bigger than usually found in hotels these days and hot water was plentiful. The only downside to the room, which was at the front of the hotel was traffic noise. Strangely not in the evening but from about 7am to 10am in the morning. Presumably this would not be as noticeable in rooms at the rear of the hotel. Double glazing of the windows on a refurbishment would probably reduce this intrusion. The leisure facilities were excellent, the swimming pool was spotlessly clean and not too cold. The Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room were all fully working (it irritates me at establishments to find one or more of the facilities to be 'out of order'). The restaurant provided a good breakfast selection with traditional cooked options to order from the kitchen. The evening meals were excellent, good quality produce and generous servings. I do have to make an adverse comment here regarding the menu. There is a reasonable selection on it but it is the same menu for each night which makes it repetitive if staying for more than one or two nights. There is a 'specials board' which we were told changed daily. However, for the three days that we were there it did not change! The restaurant staff were efficient and friendly; the repartee with Richard making our meals the more enjoyable. This is situated in a great place for visiting this part of Yorkshire, York, Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough all an easy drive from here. We would certainly return to this hotel if visiting the area again.

« nice hotel, noisy neighbours »

we booked a two night stay through travel zoo and stayed on 18 and 19th of april, was pleasantly suprised by the hotel and amenities. the room was nice and well decorated, had to call a member of staff to the room as there were 'used' tissues stuffed down by the side of the bed, staff were very attentive and helpful. evening meal in the restaurant was delicious and very enjoyable. my only beef with the place(which isn't the staffs fault), was the ignorance and inconsiderate conduct of the people in the room next door, who had no thought for anyone but themselves, shouting and crashing about all night, all that could be heard was an awful high pitched liverpudlian accent !!!!.

« Nice leisure facilities, rooms a bit dated »

Friendly hotel, rooms are clean but a bit dated which was only to be expected. Very nice pool, sauna and steam room area, but be aware it is open to non residents so Saturday morning was aqua tots. Restaurant meal was very good, on a traditional grill line with a modern twist. We booked a DB&B deal direct with Best Western, Breakfast was £1 extra and Dinner £21 for both of us on the room rate. If we had paid the bill for the dinner it would have been about £60 for what we had. Breakfast was a bit disappointing, nice selection of cereals, fresh fruit etc but the cooked was not that good. Bacon over cooked and salty and the sausage were not up to much. Usual sliced bread to toast. The noise from the special coffee machine was not appreciated first thing in the morning. The hotel was quite busy but deals offered on Travel Zoo offering saving about £10 on booking direct. Overall good leisure facilities, room OK, restaurant good, breakfast poor and would not stop again.

visited for the 3rd time in last 2/3 years as a party of 3 ( mum, dad and 6yr old ) as its location is handy for travel. we had an executive room as the family rooms were fully booked. room was large and clean with fold away bed put in for the night.room decor needs to be seriously updated as its old and doesn't match.t/v for an exec room was very small.old single pane wooden windows that had condensation and some parts were rotting.bed was very uncomfortable ( personal taste ? ) but large. swimming pool was enjoyed by all and was warm this time as previous 2 visits it was cold.sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi all great.didn't use small gym.staff friendly and helpful throughout. had evening meal in pub side of restaurant and this was lovely, we all finished what was on our plates.buffet starters and hot breakfast was cooked to order and although hot items were on serious portion control the food was good. would i return, yes.

    « Excellent event venue »

We are local, and visited the hotel for an event. We didn't stay overnight but the service, food and facilities were all excellent, as were the very friendly staff. The bar and public rooms are all spacious and attractive and the whole place has a really warm and inviting atmosphere.

Really relaxing great hotel with a swimming pool that was a pleasant bonus.Food was fantastic, both evening meal and breakfast. A great base to see the best of N Yorks too. All the staff friendly and helpful, we will be back

    « Crown Hotel Boroughbridge »

What a nice hotel! Good accommodation, friendly and helpful staff, good food at breakfast and dinner. Public areas are very well appointed. Why this has to be at least 200 words is a mystery to me. The weather was unseasonably warm during our stay.

« Lovely hotel and staff »

We had never been before, but had been to other Great Western hotels and we have liked them all. The staff were so helpful and genuine. Food very good. Room very nice, comfortable and so warm! Would love to go back sometime. The pool was a real bonus!

« Return visit exceeded expectations »

We stayed at the Crown Hotel three years ago when one of us was recovering from a serious injury. The staff could not have been more helpful and the hotel, food, overall high standards and general ambience were outstanding. My parents have since returned a couple of times and were never disappointed. Our return visit was similarly rewarding. The hotel continues to be well furnished, spotlessly clean and nicely intimate; food and wine delicious and members of staff consistently helpful, courteous and friendly. Parking is secure and the location of the hotel combines an historic quiet town with easy access to links to explore such as York and Harrogate.

    « Pre-Easter Break »

We booked 2 nights at the Crown Hotel on a bed, breakfast and 1 evening meal basis through Travelzoo which was good value. Our room (No. 57) was a little small but was quiet, clean and comfortable and we had all we needed but like the rest of the hotel it could do with modernising from a décor point of view which seems to be stuck in the 1980s. The food in the restaurant was good and we chose to eat in there for the 2nd evening as well. All of the staff were friendly and professional, especially Jenny (a waitress in the restaurant) who I think is an asset to this hotel.

« Very comfortable accommodation and good spa facitlities »

Comfortable beds, good shower pressure; very friendly staff both around the hotel and at reception. The pool was relaxing together with the sauna, steam room and spa pool. Plenty of secure parking. We ate evening meal once and had the early bird menu which was good food and good value. Breakfast was good although on our last morning they ran out of fresh fruit. The porridge option was excellent and I can recommend the coffee. The room rate on the bill didn't tally with our pre-booked rate through Best Western but they said they would take it up with BW. Very well placed for visits in the Dales such as Fountains Abbey and Brimham Rocks; also for shopping and Betty's in Harrogate!

« Quality accomodation with excellent spa. »

Had a lovely stay in this classy establishment in the small but lovely Boroughbridge. We had a four poster bedroom and it was clean, spacious and cosy. We made use of the spa on both days and loved it. Sauna, steam room, hot tub and a quite lovely pool. Lots of cozy chairs in the bar but the only drawback was a lack of background music which meant a lack of atmosphere. There is an early bird menu available until 7.00 which was very good value, we had a very tasty fish pie. As I said Boroughbridge is not a large place but there are some quality shops and a couple of very nice cafes, Indian restaurants and Public Houses. Especially recommended on the cafe front is BEAN Vintage. The town is well situated as a base for visiting so many places nearby such as Ripon, Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks, Thirsk, Knaresborough, Harrogate and so much more.

« Spa and Afternoon Tea »

What lovely staff! This was a super treat for us after a hectic weekend. We were redeeming a voucher that we were bought for Christmas so weren't sure what to expect. We were welcomed with genuine warmth by the receptionist in the leisure centre and made good use of the pool, sauna, steam room and spa pool for the next few hours. By 3:30 we were ready for something to eat so we got dressed and were told we could have our tea (which we'd booked for 4 o'clock) whenever we were ready. Tea, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream topped off with a couple of slices of cake. Superb!

« very nice spa and pool. »

Very nice overnight stay. Staff were excellent very warm and welcoming. There were four in our party and we had two rooms close together on the ground floor. Both rooms were clean and comfortable and had been redecorated recently but quite cheaply I think as not of a great standard. Have to say the food in the restaurant on the Saturday night wasn't great, my lamb was way over cooked and the whole meal just average, however. the Sunday breakfast was good and plentiful and we all enjoyed it. I would recommend this hotel as a good base to explore.

    « Needs updating »

The sign boasts ' hotel with personality' , in this case of a rather stingy old relative. Positives first- parking, pool, staff all good. Room ok but thin walled. Biscuits in room- bourbons really? Heating turned off, but that's ok for me. Changing rooms in spa, need updating. Dinner was a bit pricey , walked over the bridge to the pub- spot on. Breakfast extra charge, not great. Room 3/5 Spa 3/5 Food 2/5 Staff 4/5 Vfm 3/5

    « Welcoming hotel »

Staying overnight was made very pleasant by welcoming staff and comfortable rooms. The facilities were clean and the rooms were well presented. There was no bar fridge in room but didn't miss it and staff were happy to get whatever you wanted . Tea and coffee and biscuits were provided which was handy for international travellers like myself with jet lag and the munchies in the middle of the night! I enjoyed my stay and the price was very reasonable and had access to free wi-fi too!

    « Lovely and relaxing »

We stayed a couple of nights mainly for the pool, sauna etc. The food was really nice and good quality ingredients, the early evening offer made it cheaper too. A lovely breakfast, served by friendly staff with cooked and cold options available. The pool and spa facilities were clean and quite quiet even we stayed, I think at the most there was about 6 others using the pool when we were in, as a result it was made even more relaxing, my partner and teenager really loved it.

    « Very good »

Stay here on a couple of occasions each year and am never dissapointed it is an old coaching hotel with the creaky floorboards and the like but it is full off character food is very good staff really nice it has a fully equipt gym and pool its in the centre of the town which has some pubs and is great for access to A1 can be a bit noisy if your room faces the main street but I look forward to my next visit

    « Sunday Dinner »

Had Sunday dinner here and was very disappointed, the entire bar/restaurant was empty and featureless, the meal was clearly warmed up with little enthusiasm just for us, tough beef with burnt roast spuds that were cold on the inside, the veg was a combination of over cooked mush and under cooked crunch. Sorry will not be going again soon.

    « Lovely break »

Visited in October to celebrate mine and my mothers birthdays. A lovely hotel, nice room, nice lounge areas, super breakfast and very lovely spa/swimming pool. Very let down by the vegetarian food options other than breakfast though - all deep ried or rich sauces - neither of which I can eat and only ate the lazangia as I was super starving after all the swimming. The village is small and nothing much to do in local area. Would recommend it as a nice place to stay but not if you are a vegetarian. Would realy love to visit again if they make a few changes to their menu.

    « Lovely Hotel »

We stayed for a 2 night break at the end of January for our anniversary, on arrival we were upgraded to a four poster room which was lovely. We booked dinner bed and breakfast and we were not disappointed the food quality and restaurant are both of a high standard . We spent both afternoons enjoying the pool and facilities both of which are superb . Will definitely return to this hotel.

« The Crown is a great place to relax. »

Just returned home from a two night B&B stay at The Crown Hotel Boroughbridge. As usual, we really enjoyed our stay, at this friendly and welcoming Hotel, all the the Staff just can't do enough to make your stay at the Crown, an enjoyable experience The Health Club ( swimming pool, steam room, sauna, gym is free to visitor's staying at the Hotel) is an added bonus, and not to be missed. Breakfasts are delicious and set you up for the day, the meals in the dining room and bar, are also delicious. Can't wait to return to The Crown, and soon, we hope.

    2
    « Room dated »

Evening meal was delicious the staff was friendly the rooms need updating as there is no lock on the door just a latch and the door didn't fit the frame and the light that came through kept you away on top of you can hear everything that is going on in the rooms around you i heard snoring all night by a fellow resident, the breakfast was OK some of the items was cold and some was hot, but they did have a car park which is a bonus as being on the high street it makes it a lot better.

    « One night stay »

This is a lovely old hotel with character based in the middle of a small town/village - the Black Bull pub is well worth a visit a good old traditional pub. Good breakfast. Good leisure facilities. Secured free parking.

« Nice few days break »

Stayed at this hotel between Christmas and New Year, the village of Boroughbridge is Is quite nice and we found some lovely walks in the area. There is also some shops and tea shops and a really good Indian Restaurant that we tried along with another pub called the Grantham Arms which served excellent food. The rooms in the hotel were fine and as others have said were slightly dated but that didn't really bother us as they were clean and functional, the only negative I would say is that the pillows had gone beyond shelf life and were so flat, these really needed to be replaced as nobody likes pillows past there sell by date. Swimming pool was lovely and had a nice chill out in the steam room. We only ate breakfast at the hotel and this was good and the staff were pleasant , freshly cooked which is always so much better than a dried up buffet. Overall I would recommend this hotel for a short break.

    « xmas leisure break »

stayed here with friends over xmas. first we went to the pool. very relaxing but the Jacuzzi could of had more bubbles, pool nice and warm. drinks prices are reasonable, friendly staff. we did not eat on the night went to a local pub for a meal so can not comment on the food on the evening, breakfast was fine and the bedroom was large and clean. Nice comfy bed also. would return again one day.

« Typical English hotel with some funny twists »

This hotel fits right into the small Boroughbridge town. Out in the country, not much to do, but a very quiet place to stay. The hotel is old (one could also say "it has character") but it's very well kept and comfortable. No electronic door locks here, old-fashioned keys with some hefty plastic attached so you don't loose or forget them. I had a superior room which was really big: plenty of room to dance if I would have felt so inclined, a desk, a sofa, bed, separate badroom and separate wardrobe /luggage room. Looking out of the street in two directions as it was a corner room - very nice! Slept very well though the bed is not the best I've had, had a nice breakfast in the morning (though without too many choices if you do the buffet breakfast) and nice people all around. If this site had "half" points I would probably have gone for 3.5 for this one - it's better than "average", but perhaps less than "very good". Just "good" in other words :) Funny twist, this hotel has a room 31.5. Even though it's labelled 315, it's in between 31 and 32 and clearly should have been named 31.5 or even better 31 1/2. Missed opportunity that one :)

« Super new year ball »

Just returned from our third new year dinner dance. As usual all top notch. Good choice of menu at dinner dance on New Year's Eve and all cooked perfectly and served hot. The dance was again super with most guests taking part. The real plus for this country hotel is the pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym when the weather is inclement. We thoroughly recommend this hotel for winter weekends.

    « Gala new years eve 2015 »

The hotel is situated in the town and although very pleasent in my opinion was not festive enough for the occasion. We enjoyed the evening with Family and freinds the meal was very good. The disco was a little slow in getting going as the meal was staggered and therefore meant the meal started about 7.0pm and it had to wait until all had finished eating before it could start which was about 10.15 and of course early eaters had departed the venue.Once the compare had realised the music we wanted to dance to it was midnight and the evening over

    « Home from Home »

We were looking for somewhere for a short break. It had been about 20 years since last we were at the Crown and it has not changed a bit - accepted new wallpaper, paint and carpets and it now has a swimming pool - but still the same tranquil retreat. Chesterfield style chairs and nooks and crannies remain to allow you to quietly sit and read, have a drink and generally relax and unwind. Hang on why am I telling you all this - you will all want to go. We arrived and were greeted by the young man on reception. He was efficient and polite with a smile on his face. He organised for us to have a table for dinner that evening. Our room, although over looking the street was quiet and very comfortable. All the rooms over look the streets but Boroughbridge is a sleepy little market town. The new (to me) pool and leisure centre was wonderful and my wife was able to sit and read her book and still ensure I did not drown. The food was excellent - we had breakfast and dinner, lunching out. The surrounding area ideal for gentile walks and window shopping. This is not a hotel for young families or people looking for night life.

    5
    « Quality Stay »

We stayed on a Leisure break £196 for two nights which included dinner, bed and breakfast with spa facilities. Excellent price, service and acc ommodation. The area is good for walking although when we went it was the two days after their latest floods.

    2
    « Depressing »

Couldn't make our normal stop at Roecliffe because of floods so ventured into Boroughbridge. The Crown looked ok but was really poor. The staff were pleasant enough but uninterested, the food took 40 minutes to arrive, despite being simple. It was barely adequate and grossly over-priced. The room was almost empty, completely uninspiring and overall a throroughly poor experience

    3
« Nice and peaceful, not the best »

I got this stay on a deal with dinner and B&B, which was great value. The hotel staff are super friendly, helpful and great fun, the room we stayed in was your standard fair country hotel - nothing over exciting or fancy about it, GREAT SHOWER though!! A small, cute, picturesque village with everything in walking distance, not noisy at all, and a nice atmosphere. I unfortunately did not get the opportunity to use their pool facilities as these looked great! So on appearance alone I'd say that was fantastic! Dinner was just average for me, staff were super friendly, always checked on us, the meal itself was again just average, we ordered some specialist food so it did take a while, which we did not mind as we drank our way through the time, but the meal it self was OK, if it was not all inclusive i would have been disappointed. My dessert was great, one of the best crème brulee's I've tasted in a while. But through great staff, for dinner I'd give them a 7.5 Breakfast was the same, very average, the bacon, sausages and black pud' tasted of nothing, thank heavens for brown sauce, the coffee is the biggest down fall, after a night of drinking i want a decent coffee, this stuff was awful, i didn't drink half the cup. In all fairness this was the dispenser coffee and not potted coffee from the kitchen, but still horrid nonetheless. We were not offered "proper" coffee, so could not comment on the regular coffee. And free wifi which is always good! Overall, a 6 - would i have paid full price, no! Would i go back, yes on a deal only.

    « Ideal Sunday Roast »

A cold Sunday. The bridge over the Ure flooded and us feeling in need of a roast about 5pm A very nice roast. Juicy beef. Lovely potatoes. Good yorkshires. Nice veg. All in all very nice and washed down with a pint of Viking Good value (about £10 each for food) and friendly efficient service Highly recommended.

« very good friendly traditional country town hotel »

Second visit this year. Staff could not be more helpful.A really cosy non corporate hotel/coaching inn. Dated but in an endearing way, very clean and excellent bed/bedroom No33. Food good, maybe " good plus" on the whole, certainly well about standard pub group. To sum up, just really pleasant - everything made easy.

    « Friendly staff »

Only stopped here for 1 night but a comfortable room with good amenities front desk very friendly & staff in general Pool & leisure facilities also here secure free parking onsite lovely little town with history attached . « First time - great stay! »

Stayed with another couple as an overnighter whilst visiting York. As a great western hotel we anticipated a good night and we were not disappointed. Comfortable room although paint work showing it's age. Excellent shower and fluffy soft towels along with comfy bed. Stars of the show however were the meals. Excellent food beautifully cooked and presented. Fabulous soup and beef fillet followed by first class breakfast. Did not get the chance to use leisure facilities but they looked really inviting. Would love to revisit to try these out. First class experience overall!

« A little dated but staff were supper friendly. »

Stayed one night as part of work trip. On arrival plenty of parking to the rear. Passed a swimming pool on entry through the back. A little dated, old fashioned and felt a little musty.. You even get actual keys to your room. Checked in quickly . Room was good size I had 4 poster bed! Again out dated furniture and small tv. Bed itself was comfy and itself was very clean. Slept very well. Had a drink in the bar they were having some technical issues but staff were really friendly. Old worldly type pub. Breakfast served until 930. Usual offering for this type of hotel. Standard service but good food quality, better than expected. Would normally have rated it average but marked up due to the fabulous night porter. We got back around 1am a little merry!. He then served us some drinks in the lounge. Looked after an unwell colleague and was extremely friendly!

    « Home from Home..... »

Having stayed many many times throughout the year I can only apologise it has taken so so long to right a review which I will keep short and to the point!! From someone who travels a lot due to work staying here is simply like home from home (only the food is better?lol) plus you have use of the excellent leisure facilities a well. Every member of staff is friendly and will go out of their way to make sure that everything exceeds your expectations, personally I would travel further to stay here and have an excellent meal and a good nights sleep rather than stay at many places I have stayed before?. Keep up the excellent work!!

    4
    « Unexpected bonus »

Booked the Crown on a last minute break after a bad experience at another hotel and what a difference a few miles makes from checking in the whole experience was fantastic with the staff going out of their way to help the food was excellent with good service too I would definitely recommend this hotel as a base to see the area Best Western hotels do tend to get poorer reviews but in this case this is well worth a visit .

    « Pleasant Break »

Just returned from a four night leisure break at the Crown. First the positives....an old coaching inn in the centre of Boroughbridge...well positioned for visiting York, Harrogate etc. Very pleasant, friendly staff. An excellent pool...much enjoyed. We were upgraded to an executive room which was a good size and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was adequate though it would have been nicer to have a choice of rolls along with the bread. Now the negatives....the wi-fi...though free...was very hit and miss and the t.v was too small for the room and in a very strange...almost unwatchable position. We were on a half board package so ate in the hotel every night. The menu became very repetitive...the same soup for three nights running for instance and the same vegetables every night regardless of which main course you ordered. However the desserts were very good and the portions served huge! Overall though we enjoyed the visit. A point which may be of interest to some older guests...the 1A bus now runs between Boroughbridge and Knaresborough and Harrogate every hour..therefore doing away with parking problems! There is also a useful bus to York.

    3
« Shame about the bed!!!! »

The Crown Hotel was in a good situation for touring the area. The positives were the spa attached and plenty of seating areas for a quiet drink or coffee. food was excellent apart from when I mentioned to the waitress that the sweet wasn't as described she just shrugged it off. We upgraded our room which had a 4 poster bed but no water or extras that you would expect, although clean was tired. unfortunately the mattress was awful and I spent a very restless night avoiding the lumps. On inspection it was very badly stained and had seen better days. pity any bride staying in this room in future we complained to the manager the next morning who was unaware of any previous complaints and said that the rooms are due to be upgraded. We were refunded the cost of the upgrade but left disappointed.

    « travel zoo deal »

We stayed here on a travel zoo deal recently and were happy with the service we had, the staff were friendly and welcoming and were lucky enough to get an upgrade to an executive room which was much bigger than the standard room with a four poster bed too. WE dined in the restaurant on both nights and thought the food was of a good standard and had a pleasant atmosphere with background music. The building itself is old and historic if there is any room for improvement I would say the bedrooms could do with an update otherwise a good place to stay.

    4
    « good 2 days »

my cousin and myself booked on travelzoo lovely hotel really good value for what we paid. breakfast and evening meal were first class. lovely staff really friendly would definitely buy the deal again if it comes back on.. had a lovely day in harrowgate and york.

« Cheeky little weekend get away. »

Had a lovely weekend stay here and enjoyed using the Swimming pool and Spa. Staff were lovely and helpfull, and the facilities are exactly as you would expect. The local area is beautifull and well worth a walk around.

    3
    « Pleasant »

Barry's service was exceptional, thank you Barry. Shower just soaked bathroom and kicked out dirty water, other than that the rooms were clean but no way of turning down heating as thermostats on radiators not fitted.. Generally the hotel would benefit from an update, but lovely setting and an enjoyable trip.

    3
    « Tired hotel »

The Crown is a pretty average hotel. The restaurant was reasonably good, serving an excellent breakfast, and the staff were friendly on the whole. However, although the beds were particularly comfortable and the power shower was great the room had little to recommend it. It was a decent size, and clean, but the decor is tired to say the least. The wallpaper was bordering on the offensive and none of the soft furnishings matched either it (probably not a bad thing in this case) or each other, but it gave us something to laugh about at least! The whole place looks like it needs some serious investment and the services of a decent interior designer, preferably one that isn't colour blind!

    « a lovely hotel »

The Crown hotel has an excellent location , right in the centre of Boroughbridge. It is a beautiful hotel with a real country house feel. Everywhere is immaculate and the staff are all very friendly. The rooms are well appointed . The food is good with everything freshly cooked , which is especially good at breakfast.

    « short break »

Stayed for 1 night and had an enjoyable stay. our room was clean and the bathroom was very spacious. We had booked a standard double but was upgraded to an execetive double which was a nice surprise. The spa was very good and the staff very helpful and polite. We had a evening meal which was very nice the wine is abit overpriced. I think it would have been nicer having a little bit of background music in the restaurant. Breakfast was lovely and plentifull. Overall we had a lovely stay and would be very happy to return.

« Does the job it was intended for. »

We broke our journey from Skye to Bucks here. The Hotel is a very traditional town centre coaching inn with what looks like a very good leisure facility with a nice pool. Reception was deserted when we arrived and we had to get the barman to find her but after that everything was OK. There was a wedding on and we were warned that it would go on until midnight and it went longer but our room was not too close. Floor boards creaky and no lift are downsides to an old property. Breakfast was really good - we did not eat our main meal here as the Crown at Roecliffe is close and much better at food.

« Nice Traditional Town Centre Hotel »

On a one night stopover for a customer visit a few miles away. The hotel is in the centre of Boroughbridge, but only around 5 mins fromn the A1(M) junction, so very convenient to get to. Nice quality hotel - was given free upgrade to an executive room, which was good size with a desk. Pleaseant staff and good english breakfast. There is a secure car park, with exit coder required. Also, has a leisure centre with decent size swimming pool. Overall, a good stay and fair value for money.

    4
« Overall, a very pleasant stay, with improvement needed in some areas »

My husband and I stayed on a Friday night, with a $25 p/p evening meal allowance included in the price. The overall ambience of the place is old fashioned and warm, with lovely decor and wooden panelling in the public areas - and great creaky stairs and floorboards! Some soft background music would have given it some more atmosphere. All public areas and amenities were spotlessly clean. Our check-in was efficient and friendly. We used the leisure facilities, which were excellent, and a big bonus - there were only 2 other people in the pool at 5pm, and we had the steam room and jacuzzi to ourselves - perfect. Our room (76) overlooked the kitchen roof (!) - but this wasn't a problem, and we could have the windows open. The room itself was nicely furnished, but certainly not spacious - at least one comfortable chair would have been nice, but there was no room. The standard double bed was comfortable, and the bathroom clean, with a good hot shower over the bath, and pristine white towels. No luxury toiletries, but a good hospitality tray. We had an extremely peaceful night's sleep - very important. As other reviewers have noticed, the service at evening meal is very slow, even though there seemed to be very few diners in the restaurant at 8pm. There were only two staff members on duty, and there was no atmosphere at all - again, some unobtrusive background music would have made all the difference. Our main course took 40 minutes to arrive (no starter), and it was of average quality for the price. We had to ask for the dessert menu, and ask again when it didn't appear. The desserts were nicer than the main course - but overall, we were not surprised that the restaurant was poorly attended, and wouldn't choose to eat there again. Breakfast was a different experience - friendly, efficient, fast service, with an excellent choice of fresh fruit, cereals etc, a beautifully cooked full English (or part thereof!), and lovely hot coffee. The 11am checkout gives time for an early-bird swim before breakfast (if you're up early enough!) and we left feeling nicely relaxed. The good points about this hotel far outweigh any minor disappointments, and we would stay there again. Boroughbridge is a charming town, with nice walks by the canal, a lovely picnic area by the river, and plenty of cafes to choose from.

« Perfectly placed, lovely staff, good facilities, good value »

The market town itself is lovely and the hotel well placed with good parking. Superbly placed for North York Moors and Wensleydale. Staff exceptionally welcoming and friendly throughout our 3 night stay. Nothing too much trouble. Swimming pool and gym all available and good quality. We booked a larger room and my, was it large and with leather sofa. Room clean and bed enormous and all comfortable. One could say room was 'tired' - old curtain rail runners, soft furnishings not terribly well co-ordinated, but this is an original coaching in and one could say all part of the character - we liked it. Restaurant food excellent, but perhaps restaurant setting a bit soulless and probably more suited for breakfast. The bar area, despite its oak panelling, definitely soulless and just lacks everything! Even the Black Sheep real ale was 'off' and in the three days we were there was never brought back on. Bar, empty hotel feel and was the down side of the stay. Having said that there are some great pubs around about and one doesn't normally book hotels for the quality of the bar. On the whole very good indeed and would definitely recommend.

When we saw the swimming pool we wished we'd known in advance and come prepared ! Overall a great night's stay in a very good hotel, nice room comfortable bed, with only a minor criticism in that their "hand cut chips" looked straight from a frozen chips bag.

My husband and I stayed here on a Travelzoo deal which was really good value. Our room was clean, spacious and had everything we could ask for. We had a bottle of Prosecco in our room as part of the deal which was lovely. The bathroom was clean but a bit stark, it lacked a few nice toiletries and may be some flowers or something to soften it a bit. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the meal was nice, although the potatoes and chips were a bit cold but nothing worth complaining about. The breakfasts were lovely and served quickly and the staff were friendly, courteous and professional. A slight snag when we checked out was that we were charged for a beer that we didn't have, although when we questioned it this was refunded. All in all a lovely stay and would recommend to anyone and would like to return one day.

A lovely break at this pretty former coaching inn. Attentive friendly staff, very comfy beds, great food and amazing pool and spa. Boroughbridge is charming with lots of individual shops for all tastes. A perfect part of the world within short driving distances of great market towns

Great location to access Ripon, York etc. Easy to find & very near Junction 45 A1. Hotel comfortable with an oldy worldy feel. Staff and restaurant very good overall. Great spa facilities for a hotel of this size. Steam room needed menthol or other scent to improve the experience.

My wife and I recently spent three nights in this hotel. We have absolutely no complaints. The room was spacious and clean and had everything that we required. We dined in the hotel on each evening and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The choice was good, the food well prepared and the helpings more than adequate. All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We would stay in the hotel again if in the area and would recommend the hotel as an ideal base for visiting the surrounding area.
